THE DISTRICT A jovial Donald Trump on Tuesday greeted the first wave of tourists to the White House since his inauguration. Hillary Clinton was there, too — at least in spirit. Trump emerged from behind a French screen to a throng of cheering tourists — many of them fifth-graders from Birmingham, Ala. — who had packed into the East Wing of the White House for a chance to catch a glimpse of the 45th president. “Oh my God!” they shouted as the president stretched his arms open to announce his arrival. Throughout Trump’s short appearance, it was hard not to notice the giant portrait of the former first lady — and Trump’s opponent in the hotly contested election — prominently hanging beside him. in visitors to the 217-year-old residence. Among the first tourists were a group of fifth-graders from the Briarwood Christian School in Birmingham. Trump randomly pulled one young boy — 10-year old Jack Cornish, also of Birmingham — from the crowd, hugging him and patting him

on the shoulders before sending him back to the throng of envious schoolmates. One of them shouted, “You’re famous, Jack!” President Bill Clinton and first lady Hillary opened the White House to tours the day after they moved in in January 1993. The Clintons welcomed about 1,000

winners of a lottery drawing along with then-Vice President Al Gore and his wife, Tipper. George Washington’s portrait graced the event that day. Under the Obama administration, the director of the White House Visitors Office welcomed about 3 million tourists. VIVIAN SALAMA (AP)

Man who threatened president to seek office

THE DISTRICT At a circular booth in the middle of the Trump International Hotel’s balcony restaurant, President Donald Trump dined on his steak — well-done, with ketchup — while chatting with British Brexit politician Nigel Farage. A few days later, major Republican donors Doug Deason and Doug Manchester, in town for the president’s address to Congress, sipped coffee at the hotel with Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif. After Trump’s speech, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin returned to his Washington residence — the hotel — and strode past the gigantic American flag in the soaring lobby. With his tiny terrier tucked under an arm, Mnuchin stepped into an elevator with reality TV star and hotel guest Dog the Bounty Hunter, who particularly enjoyed the Trumpstamped chocolates in his room. It’s just another week at the new political capital of the nation’s capital. Rooms start at more than $500 most nights, according to the hotel’s website and a receptionist. That’s up hundreds of dollars from when the hotel opened, not long before Election Day. The $200 million hotel inside the federally owned Old Post Office building has become the place to see, be seen, drink, network — even live — for the still-emerging Trump set. It’s a

Rooms at Trump’s D.C. hotel start at more than $500 a night, a big increase from when it opened in September.

rich environment for lobbyists and anyone hoping to rub elbows with Trump-related politicos — despite a veil of ethics questions that hangs overhead.

For Republican Party players, it’s the only place to stay. “I can tell you this hotel will be the most successful hotel in Washington, D.C.,” Manchester said. He said Trump’s hotel will attract people based on its location near the White House and Congress, the quality renovation and the management team. Then there’s also the access. Although Trump says he is not involved in the day-to-day operations of his businesses, he retains a financial interest in them. A stay at the hotel gives someone trying to win over Trump on a policy issue or political decision a potential chit. That’s what concerns ethics lawyers who had wanted Trump to sell off his companies, as previous presidents have done. The White House strongly disputes that there’s any ethical

danger in Trump’s business arrangements. Trump’s continued ownership of his hotel and other businesses has spawned lawsuits and ethics complaints, but so far no action on any of them. One accommodation Trump says he is making on the ethics front is to donate profits from foreign governments that spend money at his hotels. Last week, Kuwait’s ambassador, Salem Al-Sabah, hosted a reception at the hotel, in what was one of the first known instances of foreign money changing hands with the hotel division of the Trump Organization since he became president. A Trump Organization spokeswoman did not respond as to whether the money from the Kuwaiti Embassy has been or will be donated. Mnuchin was in attendance. JULIE BYKOWICZ (AP)

Don’t count the snow out just yet

Snow has been hard to come by this winter in Washington: A mere 1.4 inches have fallen. But there is a chance snow fortunes could change. Depending on the exact track of a storm approaching the region from the west, snow could fall Saturday night into Sunday. Another opportunity for snow may arrive Monday night. At the same time, the storminess could just miss us — which would be the ultimate kick in the pants for snow lovers. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Officer suspended for online remark Policeman’s posting seemed callous after teens died in car crash

CHARLES COUNTY, MD. A Maryland law enforcement officer has been suspended after a comment he posted on his personal Facebook page about teenagers who were killed last week in a crash. The officer with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office wrote “F--- ’em, shouldn’t have been driving that fast.” The comment was reported to administrators by the public and other employees in the department. Authorities identified the officer as Robert Glover and said he is a 19-year veteran of the force. He is assigned to the patrol unit. The county had three crashes Friday that left four young people dead and another person seriously injured, according to Charles County Sheriff Troy D. Berry.

In one of the crashes, Colin C. Bipat and Desmond L. Cooke — who were both 17 and students at Westlake High School — died after the car they were riding in crashed and struck a traffic light pole in Waldorf. An 18-year-old student with serious injuries was airlifted to a hospital. Berry said he contacted Glover as soon as he knew of the comment. Berry said Glover told him that he had “already removed” the comment and apologized on his personal Facebook page. Glover has been suspended with pay, which is consistent with state laws, according to Diane Richardson, a department spokeswoman. Officials said there will likely be more “administrative actions,” as they are reviewing the incident. Berry apologized for Glover’s comment and said it “does not reflect the opinions of myself nor the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.” DANA HEDGPETH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Conservative groups torch Republican plan to replace Obamacare

Prosecutors: Ex-mayor stole from kids club

WIN McNAMEE (GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS A powerful conservative backlash threatened to sink the new Republican health-care bill Tuesday less than 24 hours after its launch, even as President Trump and congressional leaders began trying to sell the legislation as the GOP cure for Obamacare. “We’re going to do something that’s great and I’m proud to support the replacement plan released by the House of Representatives,” Trump said Tuesday. Meanwhile, Vice President Mike Pence told GOP lawmakers this was their chance to scuttle Obama’s law, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell forecast congressional passage by early April. But major obstacles loomed as key Republican lawmakers announced their opposition, and one conservative group after another torched the plan. The Club for Growth, Heritage Action for America, Americans for Prosperity and Tea Party Patriots variously derided the new bill as Obamacare Lite, Obamacare 2.0 and even RyanCare, in a dig at House Speaker Paul Ryan. The concerted conservative opposition was a remarkable rebuke to legislation GOP leaders hope will fulfill seven years of promises to unravel Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Groups that are uniting to oppose the new House legislation include

Several conservative groups called the GOP health-care bill Obamacare Lite and even RyanCare.

Governors respond GOP governors joined in on expressing concern about the new bill, with Ohio Gov. John Kasich arguing that phasing out expanded Medicaid coverage without a viable alternative is “counterproductive.” Gov. Bruce Rauner of Illinois said he was “very concerned” that people will be “left in the lurch” under the House GOP plan. (AP)

many that sprang up to oppose Obamacare in the first place. “As the bill stands today, it is Obamacare 2.0,” the billionaire Koch Brothers-backed Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Partners chamber of commerce said in a statement. “Millions of Americans would never see the

improvements in care they were promised, just as Obamacare failed to deliver on its promises.” The GOP plan would repeal the individual mandate, replace income-based subsidies with age-based tax credits, and limit federal funding for Medicaid. Democrats say the bill would leave many people uninsured, shifting costs to states and hospital systems. The bill also adds up to big tax cuts for the rich, cutting more than 20 taxes enacted under Obama’s heath law, with the bulk of the savings going to the wealthiest Americans. Republicans are pushing forward without official estimates from the Congressional Budget Office on the cost of the bill and how many people would be covered. GOP lawmakers

acknowledge they can’t hope to match the 20 million Americans covered under Obamacare. Conservatives denounced the new system of refundable tax credits as a costly new entitlement, and demanded a vote on a straightforward repeal-only bill. The new legislation is “not the Obamacare replacement plan, not the Obamacare repeal plan we’ve been hoping for,” Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, said with members of the House Freedom Caucus. Caucus members command enough votes to take down the bill in the House, but the group’s chairman, Rep. Mark Meadows R-N.C., emphasized they view the leadership bill as a starting point. Committee votes on the new bill are set to begin today. ERICA WERNER AND ALAN FRAM (AP)

POLITICS Anthony Silva — the eccentric former mayor of Stockton, Calif., once accused of playing strip poker with teenagers — is facing charges that he stole hundreds of thousands of dollars meant to help poor children. Prosecutors say Silva funneled money from the Stockton Boys and Girls Club bank accounts and used the organization’s credit card to pay for trips to the Philippines and South Lake Tahoe, retail purchases, Motel 6 charges and recurring monthly payments for a dating website called filipinocupid.com. Prosecutors allege the crimes happened from January 2010 to February 2014. About $2.7 million is believed to have been taken out of the organization’s accounts through about 50,000 checks. The former mayor of Stockton, in the San Joaquin Valley, used to run the Boys and Girls Club, now called the Stockton Kids Club. Federal agents searched Silva’s home and the Stockton Kids Club last week. “The most disadvantaged, economically disadvantaged children in our community were taken advantage of,” San Joaquin County District Attorney Tori Verber Salazar said. Silva was arrested Sunday at the San Francisco airport on felony charges including embezzlement, money laundering and grand theft. He has denied the accusations. KRISTINE PHILLIPS

CIA spy tools go public NATIONAL SECURITY The latest revelations about the U.S. government’s powerful hacking tools potentially take surveillance right into the homes and pockets of billions of users worldwide, showing how a remarkable variety of everyday devices can be turned to spy on their owners. Televisions, smartphones and internet-connected vehicles are all vulnerable to CIA hacking, according to WikiLeaks documents released Tuesday. The capabilities described include recording the sounds, images and the private text messages of users, even when they use encrypted apps to communicate. The CIA also studied whether it could access vehicle control systems used by modern cars and trucks, which WikiLeaks said could allow “nearly undetectable assassinations.” A statement from WikiLeaks indicated that it planned to post nearly 9,000 files describing the code developed by the CIA to steal data from targets overseas and turn these ordinary devices into surveillance tools. In the case of a tool called “Weeping Angel” for attacking Samsung SmartTVs, WikiLeaks wrote, “After infestation, Weeping Angel places the target TV in a ‘Fake-Off’ mode, so that the owner falsely believes the TV is off when it is on. In ‘Fake-Off’ mode the TV operates as a bug, recording conversations in the room and sending them over the Internet to a covert CIA server.” The documents, which The Washington Post could not independently verify and the CIA has declined to confirm, list supposed tools for cracking into such widely popular devices as Apple’s iPhone or the Android smartphones whose operating

WikiLeaks has said it will post nearly 9,000 files describing CIA tools used on devices — including phones and internet-connected vehicles — to spy.

system is made by Google, but there are marked differences from the 2013 revelations by the National Security Agency’s former contractor Edward Snowden. His documents largely described mass surveillance of internet-based communications systems more often than the individual devices that appear to have been the focus of the CIA. By targeting devices, the CIA could gain access to even well-encrypted communications on popular apps like Signal and WhatsApp without having to crack the encryption itself.

How legit is this leak? “At first glance,” the data release “is probably legitimate or contains a lot of legitimate stuff, which means somebody managed to extract a lot of data from a classified CIA system and is willing to let the world know that,” said Nicholas Weaver, a computer security researcher at the University of California at Berkeley. Faking a large quantity of data is difficult, but not impossible, he noted. Weaver said he knows of cases of WikiLeaks deliberately neglecting to include a document and mislabeling stolen data, but none of fraudulent information. (TWP)

Daughters of Panamanian ex-dictator Noriega say he’s in critical condition after brain surgery

The WikiLeaks reports appear to acknowledge that difference by saying the CIA “bypassed,” as opposed to defeated, encryption technologies. Frustration rippled through Silicon Valley on Tuesday as technologists grappled with revelations of yet another government attempt to exploit their systems. “The argument that there is some terrorist using a Samsung TV somewhere — as a reason to not disclose that vulnerability to the company, when it puts thousands of Americans at risk — I fundamentally disagree with it,” said Alex Rice, chief technology officer for Hacker One, a startup that enlists hackers to report security gaps to companies. Privacy experts say the CIA may have been forced into focusing on vulnerable devices because the internet overall has become more secure through more widespread deployment of encryption. In this new world, devices have become the most vulnerable link. Snowden’s revelations made strong encryption a major, wellfunded cause for both privacy advocates and technology companies. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Yahoo and many other companies announced major new initiatives. Many websites began encrypting their data flows to users to prevent snooping. Encrypting apps for private messaging, such as Signal, Telegram and WhatsApp, exploded in popularity. Against that backdrop, many argued that devices were the best available target left in a world with widespread online encryption. The WikiLeaks documents suggests that the CIA reached the same conclusion. CRAIG TIMBERG,

Nominee won’t commit to using special counsel POLITICS Resisting insistent questioning from Democrats, deputy attorney general nominee Rod J. Rosenstein, above, refused to commit Tuesday to appoint an independent counsel to oversee investigations of Russian meddling in the election — though he stressed that he didn’t yet know the facts of the matter. At a tense Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing that exceeded 3½ hours, Rosenstein said he was “not aware” of any reason he would not be able to supervise such probes. Rosenstein is a respected prosecutor who has served in both Democratic and Republican administrations. But on Tuesday, Democrats and Republicans pressed him for answers on how he would handle any probes of Russian meddling in the U.S. election or contacts with associates of President Trump. Last week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that he was recusing himself from any campaign-related investigations after The Washington Post reported that he had met with the Russian ambassador twice during Trump’s campaign and had not disclosed that fact at his own confirmation hearing. That would mean supervision would fall to Rosenstein if he is confirmed. He said he would handle it “the way I would handle any investigation.” MATT

HEALTH Fewer overweight Americans have been trying to lose weight in recent years, and researchers wonder if fat acceptance could be among the reasons. The trend, observed in a study published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, occurred at the same time obesity rates climbed. “Socially accepted normal body weight is shifting toward heavier weight. As more people around us are getting heavier, we simply believe we are fine, and no need to do anything with it,”

said lead author Dr. Jian Zhang, a public health researcher at Georgia Southern University. Another reason could be people abandoning efforts to drop pounds after repeated failed attempts, Zhang said. The researchers analyzed U.S. government health surveys over nearly two decades from 1988 through 2014. More than 27,000 adults ages 20 to 59 were included. In the early surveys, about half the adults were overweight or obese. Those numbers climbed to 65 percent by 2014. But the

proportion of overweight or obese adults who said they were trying to slim down fell from 55 percent to 49 percent in the study. The study found obesity was most common among black women — 55 percent were obese in the most recent survey years, and there was a decline in black women trying to lose weight. Zhang said there’s a positive side to fat acceptance, if it means people feel less ridiculed for their weight. But obesity can increase risks for heart disease, diabetes, cancer and other ailments.

A study released Tuesday indicates that, overall, American adults are having less sex than they did a quarter-century ago. The paper, published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior, showed a drop across gender, race, region, education level and work status. Using 1989-2014 data from the General Social Survey, the study found that American adults have sex less often than they did in the 1990s. For married people, it fell from about 73 times a year in 1990 to around 55 in 2014. The report did not list causes for the decline, but cited possible factors including social media; ease of access to entertainment; economic pressures on two-income families; and the use of anti-depressants associated with sexual dysfunction. BUDAPEST, HUNGARY Hungary adopted tough new rules Tuesday allowing authorities to detain all asylum seekers, including women and children fleeing war and poverty, in border camps built from shipping containers. Human rights groups said the decision was a “flagrant violation of international law.” In the eyes of Hungary’s combative prime minister, Viktor Orban, an early supporter of President Trump, migrants are a “Trojan horse of terrorism” putting his country under siege. He considers the migrants, many of whom are Muslims, a threat to Europe’s Christian identity and culture. According to rules adopted Tuesday by lawmakers from his governing Fidesz party and the far-right Jobbik party, all asylum

seekers will be detained at camps built from shipping containers on the border with Serbia until a final decision is made on their asylum requests, a process that often takes months. “Theoretically, the bill would allow authorities to detain asylum seekers indefinitely,” said Todor Gardos, a Hungary expert with Amnesty International. Hungary also intends to close all other refugee reception centers around the country. Although other European Union nations restrict the movement of some migrants for security reasons, Hungary would be the only one with such expansive measures targeting all asylum seekers. The bill faces approval by the president, but that is considered a formality. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

Scot McCloughan’s absence from work raises questions over who is running the Redskins’ roster.

THREE POINTERS

Movement in the NFL

Out of office in Ashburn

The negotiating period for NFL agents and teams began Tuesday, kicking off two days of so-called legal tampering before free agency opens Thursday. Here are three stories to follow this week. (TWP)

NFL On Tuesday, the day the NFL’s window for negotiating with free agents opened, Washington general manager Scot McCloughan was not at Redskins Park. His absence from team headquarters in Ashburn, Va., was confirmed by a person with knowledge of the situation, and the question of who is directing the Redskins’ roster-building efforts this offseason still lacks a clear answer. Redskins vice president of communications Tony Wyllie said simply, “We’re busy with free agency,” when asked about McCloughan’s whereabouts, declining to elaborate. McCloughan wasn’t among the Redskins delegation at last week’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, the most important event for evaluating college prospects before April’s NFL draft. Team president Bruce Allen told reporters Thursday that McCloughan would return to

his job “when things are handled,” which could be as early as this week. Others close to the situation said privately that McCloughan had been working on draft preparations all along, whether from his office or home. Tuesday was a significant day in the NFL offseason calendar, with the window opening at noon for teams to open formal negotiations with players due to become free agents. Free agents may begin signing with new teams at 4 p.m. Thursday. The Redskins have an extensive to-do list this offseason that not only includes brokering a long-term contract with quarterback Kirk Cousins but also deciding whether to bring back wide receivers Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson, tight end Vernon Davis and defensive lineman Chris Baker. According to a person with knowledge of the situation, the Buccaneers, Eagles, Patriots and Cowboys have asked about

Scot McCloughan wasn’t at the Redskins’ facility for first day of negotiating window

Keeping their own Last year, the Redskins locked up a number of their own players before free agency began. That might not be the case this offseason. Wide receivers Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson are both expected to hit the market. The Redskins want to bring back defensive lineman Chris Baker and tight end Vernon Davis, but they could be too pricey. The team also wants to re-sign two restricted free agents, linebacker Will Compton and running back Chris Thompson. (TWP)

Jackson. Barring any unforeseen circumstances, it’s expected that he and the Redskins will part ways.

McCloughan, among the NFL’s more respected talent-evaluators, signed a four-year deal with the Redskins in January 2015, according to sources familiar with the agreement. The deal granted him total authority over the Redskins roster, with final say on player signings and roster cuts. On many NFL teams, general managers are charged with acquiring players, while the head coach determines cuts. The upcoming draft would be McCloughan’s third since being introduced as the Redskins’ fourth general manager under owner Daniel Snyder. The Redskins have 10 selections this year. LIZ CL ARKE, MIKE JONES AND MA STER

3 Glennon’s value The Bears and Jets have been mentioned as suitors for Buccaneers backup quarterback Mike Glennon, who could reportedly get $14-15 million per year.

2 Market for Peterson The Vikings declined to pay tailback Adrian Peterson, 32, $18 million in salary and bonuses for 2017. Will he end up with another team or return to Minnesota?

1 Romo’s fate Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn’t ruled out keeping QB Tony Romo, but that’s impractical. Romo could be traded. Or, if he’s released, he could pick his next team.

Scherzer faces live bats with tweaked grip

Working with an unusual grip to protect a healing stress fracture in his right ring finger, Nationals ace Max Scherzer faced live hitting Tuesday for the first time this spring. Scherzer threw 44 pitches, hurling mostly three-fingerr fastballs to minor leaguers during a batting practice session in West Palm Beach, Fla. The 32-year-old said id he didn’t sense a drop in velocity or a change in spin with the adapted grip. A two-finger grip is standard. ard. (AP) Nationals sign LHP John Lannan to minor-league deal

Wake to face Virginia Tech in 2nd round of ACC bracket

Big East tourney is last hope for Hoyas to earn NCAA bid

Purdue forward Caleb Swanigan was a unanimous pick for both AP Big Ten player of the year and all-conference honors, the news service announced Tuesday. Minnesota’s Richard Pitino was named coach of the year. Swanigan, a sophomore, is second in the Big Ten in scoring (18.7 points per game) and first in rebounding (12.6 per game). He leads the country with 25 double-doubles. Under Pitino, Minnesota has gone from 8-23 to 23-8, the biggest turnaround in the nation. Minnesota’s Nate Mason, Maryland’s Melo Trimble, Iowa’s Peter Jok and Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ were also first-teamers. (AP)

Austin Arians gave Wake Forest an early lift from 3-point range before finishing with 17 points as the Demon Deacons claimed a 92-78 win over Boston College (9-23) in the ACC Tournament on Tuesday in Brooklyn, N.Y. No. 10 seed Wake Forest (19-12) will take a four-game winning streak and hopes of slipping into the NCAA Tournament into a matchup with seventh-seeded Virginia Tech (21-9) tonight (7, ESPN2) at Barclays Center. Arians went 4-of-5 on 3-pointers in a nine-minute stretch in the first half. Bryant Crawford, who attended Gonzaga College High in Washington, D.C., scored 20 for Wake Forest. (AP)

After closing the regular season with a 26-point defeat to Villanova, its fifth loss in a row, Georgetown faces a sobering reality: The Hoyas’ only path to the NCAA Tournament is an improbable run through the Big East tournament this week in New York. Ninth-seeded Georgetown (14-17) enters its first-round game against No. 8 seed St. John’s (13-18) at 7 tonight (FS1) with uncertainty surrounding coach John Thompson III, who posted a second straight losing record in the regular season. If Georgetown wins, a Thursday meeting with topseeded Villanova awaits.

dribbled the ball out of the paint, was fouled and hit two free throws to ice the game. Monday marked the fourth straight game Leonard ensured a Spurs come-from-behind win by hitting a go-ahead shot or making a game-saving defensive play. That’s emblematic of his singular impact. He’s averaging 26.3 points per game on 48.7 percent shooting, is 38.5 percent from 3-point range and is shooting almost 90 percent from the foul line — all while coming off backto-back NBA Defensive Player of the Year awards. The Spurs (49-13) trail the Warriors (52-11) for the best record in the NBA, and Durant is out at least four weeks with a knee injury. If San Antonio can surpass Golden State and finish with the NBA’s best record, an alreadystrong case for Leonard to win MVP could become unassailable. TIM BONTEMPS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

3-point range and 11-for-11 from the foul line with six rebounds, five assists, a steal and two blocks. That alone looks MVP-worthy, even if someone hadn’t seen the game. Those who did see it watched Leonard single-handedly secure a win in the final minute in a way few others could. In the last 33 seconds, Leonard pulled up off the dribble from 25 feet, rising and firing a shot toward the basket. There were no traces of the player who, when he entered the league in 2011, needed to have his shot completely revamped. Leonard easily buried this shot and sent the home crowd into a frenzy as San Antonio took a 110-108 lead. When Harden had a chance to answer, Leonard flew down the lane and swatted away a gametying layup before securing the rebound on a follow-up attempt by Nene. L ast ly, L eona rd c a l m ly

Quiet Spurs star Kawhi Leonard boosts MVP candidacy with dominant stretch NBA In a season that’s been dominated by big-name stars putting up big-time stats, Kawhi Leonard, as always, has been perfectly content to fly under the radar. Four huge stars — LeBron James, James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant — are all deservedly receiving serious consideration for MVP. While Leonard has taken another step forward offensively and remained an eraser on defense, he’s floated on the periphery of the race. That ended Monday night in San Antonio. By carrying the Spurs to a thrilling 112-110 victory over the Rockets, the softspoken star made his official entry into the MVP chase in a way only he was ever going to: with his play on the court. Leonard’s stat line Monday included 39 points — 17 in the fourth quarter — on 12-for-18 shooting. He w went 4-for-5 from

Ed Sheeran divvies up his talents MUSIC REVIEW Don’t believe the title of Ed Sheeran’s new album. He doesn’t want to divide. His math this time is all about compiling, accumulating. On “÷” (“Divide”), released last week, the British singer-songwriter shoots out a dozen vastly different songs that showcase his tremendous musical ability, from misty ballads to hip-hop. Each one is calculated to reach different tastes. With that in mind, don’t expect a consistent sound. Sheeran’s third full-length album is a bit like the singer himself: in flux. He’s only 26, yet he’s nostalgic for the days of first kisses. He’s in love, but misses his exes. He combines cynicism, idealism and beguiling insecurity. “I beg you don’t be disappointed with the man I’ve

become,” he sings in the terrific opening track “Eraser,” a hard-strumming meditation on fame akin to Eminem’s “Lose Yourself.” He mentions in two different songs that he has no college degree and calls himself “just a boy with a one-man show.” The album has already produced big hits, including the footstomping U2-like rocker “Castle on the Hill” that’s destined for arena singalongs, and the slinky, spare “Shape of You,” bound for every dance floor. But it has a few missteps, such as “Perfect,” with its swelling orchestra and sincerity, which seems written for a Disney movie. The bluesy track “Dive” is overwrought, falling short of his better ballads “How Would You Feel (Paean)” and “Happier.” Then he has “Galway Girl,” which seems to be more of an experiment, an audacious mix of Celtic fiddle and rap that just

‘Green Light’

Seeking inspiration In late 2015, after putting out a hit sophomore album and wrapping up a world tour, Ed Sheeran announced he was taking a break to travel. Following the 2016 Grammys, as Rolling Stone reported in Sheeran’s recent cover story, he boarded a plane to Iceland. In June, he stayed in the Ghana home of Fuse ODG, the Ghanaian-English singer, where the pair wrote African-influenced music. When they’d finish a song, “[Fuse] would invite 200-plus people ‘round, and we would just party to that song until the early hours,” Sheeran told the magazine. One of those songs, “Bibia Be Ye Ye,” ended up on the deluxe version of “÷.” (EXPRESS)

skirts the edge of parody. Sheeran is best when he’s heartbroken and bitter, and he’s gloriously both on “New Man,” a pop takedown of an ex-lover’s gym-sculpted new man. Later, when Sheeran’s voice breaks in “Supermarket Flowers,” a lovely farewell to a grandparent, it’s impossible not to be moved. “Divide” continues Sheeran’s embrace of mathematical titles — previous albums include 2014’s “x’’ (“Multiply”) and 2011’s “+” (“Plus”). The new one is certain to add listeners, subtract a few weary of his inconsistency, but definitely multiply his bank account. However you divide it, Sheeran is a special talent. MARK KENNEDY (AP)

Behold: The first bit of all-new Lorde material came last week in the form of “Green Light,” a feel-good, Lorde-like bop that’s the first single off her next album, “Melodrama,” The song’s video finds Lorde in a bathroom of a club, Lorde dancing down city streets, Lorde in a car with her head out the window. It’s music video stuff everyone’s seen before, yet Lorde makes it seem so … Lorde-like. BRYANNA CAPPADONA (EXPRESS)

‘That’s What I Like’ Bruno Mars

“That’s What I Like” really just shows one thing, which is Bruno Mars dancing, except with each move, animated sketches appear to mirror the lyrics. But don’t dismiss it over its basic premise. Mars and co-director Jonathan Lia created a music video that’s so simplistically magnetizing, you won’t realize until it’s over that you didn’t blink once. B.C.

For her ‘Windy City’ album, Alison Krauss sought out songs that told others’ stories

MUSIC Alison Krauss has a surprising rule about road trips: The driver does not command the stereo. “Whenever I have young people in the car, they’re always in control of the music,” Krauss says. “It’s like sharing yourself.” She learned that rule from her father, who once let her listen to the LP “Cold on the Shoulder” by Tony Rice for 13 hours straight during a road trip when she was a dreamy preteen staring out the window. Krauss has passed that openmindedness to the next generation. Her 17-year-old son, Sam, has inherited her good ear and has over the years introduced her to such bands as Snow Patrol and Phoenix. “As soon as he showed up, he was in charge of the music in the car,” she says, laughing. “When we deny what young people are

listening to, we’re really denying a big part of them. There’s something about it that’s speaking to them.” K rauss, who has more Grammy Awards than any other woman, emerged in February with “Windy City,” her first solo album since 1999. It’s a collection of 10 classic country covers that was shaped — not surprisingly — by road trips with her son at night through Nashville, Tenn. After she and songwriterproducer Buddy Cannon had whittled down the final list to songs by such artists as Willie Nelson, Bill Monroe, Brenda Lee and the Osborne Brothers, Krauss and Sam drove around listening to the originals. Cannon came away deeply impressed by Krauss’ skill as one of country’s best interpreters. “I’ve worked with other people who are real critical about the

songs that they pick, but she’s different. She’s just a different animal,” he says. “I can’t say I’ve worked with anybody who, from my perception, analyzes the song as much as she does.” Some of the songs for the album she chose have deep resonance — the title track was the first song she heard the Cox Family sing when she met them — and some were relatively new

to her, like Roger Miller’s “River in the Rain” from the musical “Big River.” “It has to be real. I have to see the story and I have to feel like it’s me telling the story,” Krauss says. “The only thing that we talked about was I said, ‘I’d like to do songs that are older than me.’ And then, of course, we realized how old I was.” All 10 songs in some way explore broken hearts and loss — the titles alone include “It’s Goodbye and So Long to You,” “I Never Cared for You” and “Poison Love” — but she and Cannon didn’t explicitly seek them out or want to create a tearful album. “All these songs, there’s love lost but there’s strength. It’s almost like you can’t tell they’re sad,” she says. “They’re matching a feeling. You don’t really know what that is until the end.” MARK KENNEDY (AP)
