Defense attorney Stephen Gutierrez was making his closing argument Wednesday — in an arson case — when his pants caught on fire, billowing smoke. He quickly left the Miami courtroom, the Miami Herald reported, and returned with a singed pocket. He blamed the incident on a battery in an e-cigarette and said the fire wasn’t part of a failed plan for a courtroom demonstration. His client was convicted of setting his car on fire. (EXPRESS)

EXHIBITS The magic of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama’s “Infinity Mirrors” exhibit begins as soon as the door is closed behind you. Surrounded by mirrors on all sides, visitors find themselves at the center of a seemingly endless plain filled with brightly colored lights and geometric sculptures. But curators at the Hirshhorn, where the exhibit is on display until May 14, faced an early challenge: how to re-create that magic for visitors in wheelchairs. “We had to work out how we could make this experience accessible for people with mobility disabilities,” said Beth Ziebarth, director of the Smithsonian’s Accessibility Program. Drew Doucette, who oversees multimedia and technology initiatives at the Hirshhorn, thought immediately of virtual reality. “It’s really popular right now” among video gamers and tech geeks, Doucette said. “Rather than it being something that you play with, there’s an actual use for it if it’s around making

things accessible.” The Renwick Gallery, National Museum of Natural History and other Smithsonian Institution sites have created virtual experiences in the past, often with the goal of extending the exhibit to people or students who may not be able to visit in person. The “Infinity Mirrors” exhibit marks the first time any have used virtual reality to make an exhibit accessible to those with disabilities, Ziebarth said. It took roughly four months

“We essentially had to take a step back from trying to re-create the rooms and get into the head of Kusama and say, ‘What was she trying to do?’ ” DREW DOUCETTE, who oversees multimedia initiatives at the Hirshhorn, on using virtual reality

to plan and design the “Infinity Mirrors” virtual reality experience, Doucette said. At first, an engineer tried to replicate each room literally. But designing a 3-D space covered in mirrors proved more difficult in the virtual world than the real one. Engineers created a digital replica of the room as it appears to the viewer, including black lines where the seams of the mirrors would appear. Early images of the project earned Kusama’s approval, and a representative from her studio signed off on the final version, Doucette said. The Hirshhorn offers six Samsung virtual reality headsets that visitors with disabilities can request from volunteers on site. They are only available to patrons who are not physically capable of entering the rooms, though, so don’t look to VR to help you skip the exhibit’s notoriously long lines. “I think that VR has a home in museums now, especially museums that are bringing in physical spaces and physical environments that you are supposed to walk into and experience, not just see something on the wall,” Doucette said. Metro fare increases move closer to reality

VIRGINIA

Metro station manager charged with assault

Committee votes to implement hikes and reduce some service

PABLO MARTINEZ MONSIVAIS (AP)

TRANSPORTATION The Metro board finance committee voted Thursday to raise fares for bus and rail riders, reduce train frequencies and slash some bus routes, advancing the agency’s austerity budget to a final vote — but not before slipping in three last-minute amendments to preserve a slew of bus lines that were slated for cancellation or reduction. Board members approved the $1.8 billion operating budget in the face of numerous concerns, chiefly: whether fare hikes and fewer trains would accelerate a ridership decline that has driven the nation’s second-busiest subway into financial distress. Metro is facing a $290 million budget shortfall for the coming fiscal year, and ridership and parking revenue losses — exacerbated by the year-long SafeTrack maintenance program — make up about a third of the shortfall. As board members cautiously advanced the spending plan, Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld defended the cuts. “The way that we bring back ridership is through basically more reliable service,” Wiedefeld said at a news conference after the board meeting. “We have not been able to deliver what we said we were going to deliver. So

TIDAL BASIN

Metro’s rail ridership has fallen by about 100,00 trips from its 2009 peak, and is down 12 percent since last year, according to the latest figures.

I think it’s more important to the customer [to] ‘just tell me what I’ve got and then deliver it.’ ” Rail ridership is down 12 percent since last year, according to the latest figures, and has fallen by about 100,000 trips from its 2009 peak. Metro estimates that the fare increases will result in a total loss of 10 million trips during the 2018 fiscal year. But even with the ridership loss, Metro estimates the fare hike will increase revenue by $21 million. Rush-hour rail fares are to increase by a dime, with $2.25 as the new minimum and $6 as the maximum one-way fare. The plan increases off-peak rail and bus fares 25 cents. Trains, most of which arrive at least every six minutes, would instead see frequencies reduced to every eight minutes, with more service

in the system’s core. The full board is expected to approve the budget March 23, and the fare increases and service changes will go into effect July 1. There was little debate over the need for drastic cuts. Wiedefeld, who has eliminated 500 jobs and is in the process of cutting 500 more, has said there are few other sources of savings left for the beleaguered transit agency. But board member Malcolm Augustine said the fare increases and service cuts are the wrong approach. The lone dissenting vote, he worried the changes will only hasten the ridership decline. “This is basic economics. You’re raising the price. You’ll lose riders,” he said. “That is a bad business move.” FAIZ SIDDIQUI AND MARTINE POWERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Weekend cold could bring blossoms’ end Spring’s early arrival in D.C. could have severe consequences for its famed cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin. A punishing, longduration cold snap arriving this weekend could cause irreparable damage to the blossoms, which have advanced to a vulnerable stage. On Wednesday, the National Park Service declared that at least 70 percent of the buds have flowers on the brink of bursting out, meaning they are tender and exposed. The Park Service’s Michael Stachowicz said that once the temperature drops below 27 or 28 degrees for a half-hour, damage to about 10 percent of the blossoms can occur. He added that if temperatures drop to 24 or 25 over three days, “you start to get into the 90 percent kill range,” which is what the Weather Service is forecasting. (TWP)

A Metro station manager was arrested Wednesday after he got into a physical altercation with a fellow employee in Pentagon station. The fight occurred in the station manager’s kiosk just after 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to Metro spokesman Dan Stessel. Officials don’t know what prompted the altercation. The station manager was charged with assault and battery. The other employee, a fare technician, was taken to the hospital and evaluated, but was not admitted and did not have visible injuries. Suit: Competing vs. Trump unfair Two restaurant owners ask president to close D.C. hotel while in office THE DISTRICT How do you compete with a restaurant at President Donald Trump’s hotel down the road from the White House? Two Washington restaurateurs argue you can’t — and have sued him over it. The plaintiffs are Khalid Pitts and Diane Gross, who own Cork Wine Bar and Cork Market & Tasting Room. They allege unfair competition under local law and have filed a lawsuit in D.C. Superior Court against Trump personally and against the Trump Old Post Office LLC, which operates the hotel. They aren’t seeking monetary damages but are asking Trump to remedy the unfair competition — by resigning, divesting from the hotel or closing it while he’s president. Pitts and Gross are represented by business and

government watchdog attorneys who say they are working for free. Pitts said the couple’s political leanings are “irrelevant.” He said his dining, catering and events business is down since Trump took office, but he declined to give details. Alan Garten, lead attorney for the Trump Organization, dismissed the lawsuit as “a wild publicity stunt completely lacking in legal merit.” Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, couldn’t immediately be reached. Under constitutional immunity protections, Trump can’t be sued over official acts in the Oval Office. But he can be named in lawsuits for personal actions or those involving his businesses. Trump turned over management of his companies to his two adult sons and a company executive. He retains ownership of his global business empire, which includes the hotel. JULIE BYKOWICZ (AP)

POLITICS Two key House committees approved a Republican proposal to revise the Affordable Care Act, giving the bill its first victories amid a backlash that both Republican leaders and President Trump are trying to tamp down. The House Ways and Means Committee voted 23 to 16 along party lines to advance the American Health Care Act shortly before 4:30 a.m. Thursday after about 18 hours of debate. The House Energy and Commerce Committee voted 31 to 23, also along party lines, to advance the bill at 1:45 p.m., after about 27 hours of debate. Trump sought to calm fears about the process. “Despite what you hear in the press, healthcare is coming along great,” he tweeted midday Thursday. “We are talking to many groups and it will end in a beautiful picture!” Several hours earlier, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said lawmakers need to see the Congressional Budget Office’s estimate of how the bill will affect the federal deficit. “I think we need to know that,” McConnell said. The CBO report could be released by Monday. McConnell was the first in a growing chorus of high-ranking

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., makes an effort to explain the full scope of the GOP health plan during a news conference Thursday.

Senate Republicans to question moving forward on the health bill without an official budget tally. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin G. Hatch, R-Utah, told reporters Thursday that he values the CBO score. “I think it’s important,” Hatch said. “It’s the best we have.” House committees worked at breakneck speed through the night to advance the American Health Care Act. The pace has drawn criticism from Democrats and some Republicans. One of those Republicans, Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas, tweeted Thursday morning that the House should “start over.” “House health-care bill can’t pass Senate [without] major changes. To my friends in House:

pause, start over. Get it right, don’t get it fast,” Cotton wrote. On Capitol Hill on Thursday, House Speaker Paul Ryan, RWis., made a new attempt to explain the full scope of the GOP health plan, explaining in an unusual “TED talk”-style news conference that this legislation is only the first step. The proposal, he explained, is to be followed by regulatory actions and additional legislation that will need to win at least some Democratic support in the Senate. “We as Republicans have waited seven years to do this,” Ryan said. “This is the closest we will ever get to repealing and replacing Obamacare.” EL I S E V I EB EC K , S E A N S U L L I VA N A N D MIKE DEBONIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

$1 trillion? It’s a start.

Report: Fixing America’s infrastructure will cost much more than Trump is pledging WASHINGTONPOST.COM GRADE POINT

Harvard Law will no longer require LSATs

According to a report released Thursday, 20 percent of U.S. highway pavement is in poor condition.

DAVID PARDO (AP)

TRANSPORTATION The Trump administration promises to pump $1 trillion into improving the country’s crumbling infrastructure, but a benchmark report says it will take almost $4.6 trillion over the next eight years to bring all those systems up to an acceptable standard. The price tag for redemption has grown steadily for 15 years while an expanding country has focused on building new infrastructure rather than maintaining existing systems that were nearing the end of their natural life. Since 2001, the cost of repairing those systems has mushroomed from $1.3 trillion to the current figure, more than three times as high, according to an assessment released Thursday by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). The report comes out every four years. It gave U.S. infrastructure an overall grade of D-plus, the same grade it received in 2013, “suggesting only incremental progress was made over the last four years.” “President Trump is on to something when he calls for a national rebuilding,” ASCE President Norma Jean Mattei said in presenting the study. “But Congress and the American people have to pay for it.” She said lawmakers should raise the federal gas tax by 25 cents and index it to inflation. Trump reiterated campaign promises on infrastructure in his inaugural address and in his recent address to Congress, but the only supporting detail for that pledge thus far has been an 11-page white paper issued in October. In that document, Trump said the money would be raised by granting private investors an 82 percent tax credit that would encourage them to pump money into infrastructure projects.

U.S. infrastructure earns a barely passing grade The American Society of Civil Engineers gave U.S. infrastructure an overall grade of D-plus in a report released Thursday. Here are 2017 grades from eight of the categories, along with some revealing commentary. (TWP) Airports (D): Congestion is growing, with 24 of the big airports expected to achieve “Thanksgiving-peak-traffic-volume” at least one day each week. Bridges (C+): Four in 10 of the country’s 614,387 bridges are more than 50 years old and near the end of their designed life span. Dams (D): An estimated 2,170 of the country’s 90,580 dams are considered to have “high-hazard potential” because of failed upkeep. Drinking water (D): There are 240,000 water-main breaks each year, wasting 2 trillion gallons of water. Electricity (D+): Most electrical transmission lines were built in the 1950s and ’60s with a life expectancy of 50 years. Railroads (B): The private freight railroads that own most of U.S. track invested $27.1 billion to upgrade systems in 2015 and continue that investment. Roads (D): Traffic backups cost $160 billion in wasted time and fuel in 2014, and about 20 percent of highway pavement is in poor condition. Transit systems (D-): Though they carried 10.5 billion trips in 2015, chronic underfunding and aging infrastructure have created a $90 billion repair bill.

“We can use private financing for the major things, but it’s a slice of investment,” said former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, a Democrat who co-chairs the advocacy group Building America’s Future. “You can’t do it on the cheap. It’s time for Congress to

suck it up and vote for real [federal] investment.” Rendell said the “fix it first” approach that Trump espouses (repairing needy infrastructure before launching new projects) is not likely to draw private investors. Congressional leaders and state

Attorney General Jeff Sessions suggests he is open to outside review of Justice Department under Obama

and local officials have made clear that while private investors might put money into select projects in urban areas from which they can expect a return, they would shy away from investment in rural areas and would rather build new infrastructure than repair systems that have deteriorated. “I think the federal government has to play a larger role,” said Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy, D. Infrastructure covers far more than roads and bridges. It includes a vast network of other systems, including drinking water and sewer service, the delivery of electricity, transit systems and ports. The ASCE has been chronicling the decline of infrastructure category by category since 1998, when it took over the task that had been handled for a decade by the National Council on Public Works Improvement. “Our nation’s infrastructure is making headlines for all the wrong reasons,” ASCE Executive Director Thomas W. Smith III said. “While we haven’t seen action [from the White House], we have to hold feet to the fire.” ASHLEY HALSEY III (THE WASHINGTON POST)

For 70 years, the LSAT has been a rite of passage to legal education, a test designed to gauge students’ ability to learn the law. But its dominance could change. Beginning this fall, Harvard Law School will allow applicants to submit their scores from either the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Law School Admission Test (LSAT). The change in admissions, a pilot program at Harvard, is part of a broader strategy to expand access. Because many students consider graduate school as well as law school, and because the GRE is offered often and in many places worldwide, the decision could make it easier and less expensive for people to apply, school officials said. Last year, the University of Arizona College of Law became the first law school in the country to allow applicants to submit GRE scores rather than LSAT scores. Two other schools followed. But the decision by Harvard, which has one of the best law schools in the world, to do so could upend the admissions process for legal education. “This is a very big deal,” said Bill Henderson, a professor at the Maurer School of Law at Indiana University at Bloomington. “It loosens the vise grip of these numerical admissions criteria on the legal academy. … I can’t imagine other top law schools not following suit.” SUSAN SVRLUGA

ENVIRONMENT The new chief of the Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday he does not believe that carbon dioxide is a primary contributor to global warming, a statement at odds with mainstream scientific consensus and his own agency. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt said measuring the effect of human activity on the climate is “very challenging” and that “there’s tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact” of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. “So, no, I would not agree that [carbon dioxide] is a primary contributor to the global warming that we see,” Pruitt told CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” Pruitt’s view is contrary to mainstream climate science espoused by NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the EPA itself. NASA and NOAA reported in January that Earth’s 2016 temperatures were the warmest ever. The planet’s average surface temperature has risen about 2 degrees Fahrenheit since the late 19th century, “a change driven largely by increased

carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere,” the agencies said. The EPA says on its website that “carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas ... contributing to recent climate change.” The agency notes that human activities, such as the burning of fossil fuels, “release large amounts of CO2, causing concentrations in the atmosphere to rise.” Kerry Emanuel, professor of atmospheric science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said Thursday: “Scott Pruitt is just plain wrong on this.” Environmental groups and Democrats seized on Pruitt’s comments as evidence that he is unfit for his job. “The arsonist is

now in charge of the fire department, and he seems happy to let the climate crisis burn out of control,” said Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune. On the same day as Pruitt’s comments, InsideClimate reported that longtime EPA executive Mustafa Ali has resigned. Ali, a senior advisor and assistant associate administrator for environmental justice, had been at the EPA for more than two decades. The White House has announced plans to eliminate funds for the Office of Environmental Justice as part of a 25 percent budget cut at the EPA. Ali said the cuts would harm the people who most rely on the agency. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

McConnell doesn’t see Mexico funding wall Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was asked Thursday by Politico if he believed that Mexico would ultimately pay the $12 billion to $15 billion cost of a border wall, as President Trump has insisted will occur. “Uh, no,” was McConnell’s blunt response. Scot McCloughan loses his job as general manager roughly halfway through his contract.

THREE POINTERS

McCloughan dismissed Official says recurrence of alcohol issues behind Redskins’ firing of general manager NFL After weeks of speculation, the Redskins fired general manager Scot McCloughan on Thursday, a little more than two years into a four-year contract. An official with direct knowledge of the situation attributed the decision to McCloughan’s ongoing problems with alcohol, which also led to his firing from front office jobs with the 49ers in 2010 and Seahawks in 2014. “He’s had multiple relapses due to alcohol,” said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to comment on personnel matters. McCloughan, the official said, had received alcohol treatment since joining the franchise in January 2015, but he hadn’t actively worked for the team in weeks. Even before McCloughan left Redskins Park abruptly late last month, the official said, he had already been placed in “timeout” because of his behavior. “He didn’t make the best of his third chance in the NFL,”

the official said. If McCloughan has participated in residential treatment programs during his Redskins employment, it’s not clear when that would have occurred because he had no extended absences from the team. Neither McCloughan nor his agent Peter Schaffer could immediately be reached for comment. McCloughan has acknowledged his past problems with alcohol and said publicly that he was able to drink and do his job. Former Redskins tight end Chris Cooley, who is employed by the Redskins-owned sports radio station, said on the air Feb. 14 that alcohol may help explain the general manager’s absence. Three individuals involved with the team told The Washington Post on Wednesday that McCloughan was incensed by the team’s failure to come to his defense following Cooley’s remarks, or to reprimand Cooley. The timing could not be worse for the Redskins, coming on the opening day of NFL free agency.

“He showed up in the locker room drunk on multiple occasions. ... This has been a disaster for 18 months.” A REDSKINS OFFICIAL with direct knowledge of the situation, speaking anonymously because he isn’t authorized to comment on personnel matters.

The team confirmed the decision, effective immediately, in a statement given to The Washington Post on Thursday evening. McCloughan’s ouster leaves owner Daniel Snyder searching for what will be the fifth general manager of his 18-year tenure. Washington now has limited options for a replacement to direct the rebuilding of the roster. NFL tampering rules prohibit the Redskins from wooing away any currently employed GMs. In the interim, it appears, team president Bruce Allen will

oversee personnel decisions. Hiring McCloughan, 46, in January 2015 was a high-risk move by the Redskins, given his history with alcohol. With Allen vouching for his character and expertise, Snyder signed him to a four-year deal. Because he is being fired for cause, the Redskins likely won’t have to pay him for the remaining 22 months of his contract. The description of the situation given by the team official made no reference to the strained relationship between Allen and McCloughan. That dynamic grew more pronounced as the season unfolded and was highlighted by disagreements on personnel decisions. According to three people familiar with the situation, McCloughan was banned from speaking to reporters in January. The rift became a topic of national speculation when McCloughan didn’t join the Redskins delegation at the scouting combine. Report: Redskins nixed Cousins’ trade request

SURPRISE TRADE

Texans send QB Osweiler to Cleveland

NFL Quarterback Kirk Cousins is reportedly frustrated with the plans the Redskins have for him. For now, it appears the team will keep him in Washington this year. Last week, coach Jay Gruden expressed optimism that the team would still work out a long-term deal with Cousins. But it seems Cousins does not want that. ESPN reported Thursday that Cousins personally asked owner Dan Snyder for a trade, but was told not to get his hopes up. A person with knowledge of the situation said that as of Wednesday evening, the two sides hadn’t made any progress on a deal. The Redskins have given no indication that they plan to trade the quarterback, although it probably makes the most sense for them to do so now so they can receive some compensation for him this year rather than renting him for one $24 million season and then losing him in free agency next year. It wasn’t clear when Cousins’ request took place. But it confirms what multiple team and league sources have believed: Cousins has no desire to be here for the long term. Publicly, Cousins has talked about the importance of continuity, but also has

As of Wednesday, Kirk Cousins wasn’t close to a long-term with Washington.

Redskins add free agents Safety D.J. Swearinger: The hard-hitting defender capable of playing free or strong safety agreed to terms Thursday with the Redskins on a three-year deal reportedly worth $13.5 million. Swearinger, 25, was a second-round pick out of South Carolina by the Texans in 2013. He started 12 games with three picks for Arizona in 2016. D-tackle Terrell McClain: Washington will sign the former Cowboys defensive tackle to a fouryear deal worth just more than $21 million, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. McClain, 28, started 15 games with 2.5 sacks last year. D-tackle Stacy McGee: The Redskins reportedly signed the former Raiders defensive tackle to a five-year deal worth $25 million. said he wants to go somewhere that he’s truly wanted. Cousins has never felt completely wanted by Snyder and team president Bruce Allen. The Redskins still could entertain trade offers. People familiar with the situation say Allen is determined to recoup as rich a bounty as possible for the quarterback. But his asking price has been too rich for teams seeking help at the position. Most likely, Washington would wait until just before the draft to trade Cousins. That’s when they would have the most leverage because a team that missed on a QB in free agency would be more desperate. A long-term deal probably wouldn’t get done until closer to the July 15 franchise tag deadline, because that’s when Cousins will have the most leverage.

Sources believe QB doesn’t want to stay with team long-term

Multiple reports Thursday indicated the Browns acquired quarterback Brock Osweiler from the Texans just a year after Osweiler signed a fouryear, $72 million contract with Houston. According to ESPN, Cleveland also got a 2018 second-round pick and sixth-round pick and sent Houston a fourth-round pick. The Browns will reportedly wash their hands of Osweiler, either via release or trade, using their salary cap room to swing the extra draft pick. The Texans are in the market to upgrade the position in free agency and through a trade, possibly for Tony Romo. (AP/EXPRESS)

Terps fuel up for postseason Passionate Turgeon gives players a boost before Big Ten tourney

Acosta injury limits offense for D.C. United

Mark Turgeon fired up his players by speaking up for the freshmen in a series of tweets.

On Wednesday, his voice had steadied and he chalked up his impulse to tweet as fatherly instinct. But Turgeon hoped his freshmen would use the snubs as fuel in their first career postseason game. He cast aside questions about his young team feeling pressure this week, given that they are playing just 15 miles from campus. This is still a neutralsite game, the coach firmly said, even though droves of Maryland fans are expected. Maryland is 11-2 in games away from Xfinity Center this season, including 7-2 in conference play. “I think it will be the best of

MEL EVANS (AP)

MEN’S BASKETBALL Maryland coach Mark Turgeon needed to vent Tuesday, even if it meant stepping out of character. He was still stewing over the omissions of his three freshman starters — Anthony Cowan Jr., Kevin Huerter and Justin Jackson — from the Big Ten’s allrookie team that was announced Monday. Turgeon fired off two frustrated tweets in support of his players, asking why their contributions to 24 wins, including 12 league wins and eight road victories, hadn’t brought any accolades. Huerter and his teammates returned to the locker room after practice Tuesday and read the tweets. Maryland (24-7, 12-6 Big Ten) was already energized heading into its league quarterfinal, but those tweets added another powerful jolt. “The players loved it,” Huerter said. “For us, it just showed that he’s going to fight for us.” On Friday night (9, BTN) at Verizon Center, the third-seeded Terps face the winner of Thursday’s second-round game between sixth-seeded Northwestern and 14th-seeded Rutgers, which ended after Express’ deadline. The game follows Turgeon’s second emotional display in less than a week — he choked up in his news conference after a 63-60 win over Michigan State in the regular- season finale Saturday.

Thursday’s results ACC North Carolina 78, Miami 53 Duke 81, Louisville 77 Virginia Tech vs. Florida State, late Virginia vs. Notre Dame, late Big Ten Michigan 75, Illinois 55 Michigan State 78, Penn State 51 Indiana vs. Iowa, late Rutgers vs. Northwestern, late Notables TCU 85, Kansas 82 Villanova 108, St. John’s 67 Iowa State 92, Oklahoma State 83 Middle Tennessee 86, UTSA 70 Davidson 82, La Salle 73 Seton Hall 82, Marquette 76

both worlds,” Huerter said. “I think we play better on the road and it will feel like we’re on the road ... but we’ll still have our home crowd there.” Maryland also expects to have a fresher Melo Trimble, who secured the double-bye for the Terps with a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds left against Michigan State. Trimble struggled through injuries and fatigue in the postseason in his first two years, but has showed no signs of slowing early in March. “I’m hoping Melo’s shot ... just kind of springboards us into a great postseason,” Turgeon said. WBC: Australia eliminates China; U.S. debuts Friday vs. Colombia in Miami

MLS D.C United may be without its on-field magician, but the show must go on. Whether or not the ailing ankle of attacking midfielder Luciano Acosta heals this week, the team will face New York City FC on Sunday (2 p.m., ABC) at Yankee Stadium. In United’s season opener, a scoreless draw with Kansas City, the Argentinian watched from the bench while his team managed a measly 39 percent in overall possession. “Nobody can do what Lucho does,” coach Ben Olsen said. “If there is a silver lining, it’s that other guys will see more opportunity, but we have to find a way to create offense.” As the offense works to find chemistry, a rearranged back four hit the ground running with former midfielder Nick DeLeon sliding to right back and former right back Sean Franklin lining up at center back. While D.C. struggled to string together passes in the opener, it did force the visitors into saving a penalty kick and clearing two shots off the goal line. The back line was solid in limiting Kansas City to five shots on target. NYCFC’s attack boasts former international stars David Villa and Andrea Pirlo, and is coached by former France and Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira. But Olsen isn’t intimidated. “I’ve been in this league a long time,” he said. “I don’t care ... who’s lining up across from us.” DILLON MULLAN (FOR EXPRESS)

3 Reasons To Get A Dog an’s best friend is a truly wonderful creature. Unlike its chief rival, he’ll stand up for you, sit down for you, give you his paw and love you unconditionally (well, most dogs will). Hey, I love cats, I have one myself, but growing up I had a dog and still miss her. Hopefully one day when it’s more practical, I’ll once again have a canine. Here are 3 reasons it might be a good time for you to get a dog:

M

Companionship The city can be cold, heartless, downright mean. And it can be a lonely place at times as you commute to work looking at myriad sullen faces, deal with harried store keepers with little time for you and the bag of apples you’re purchasing, and jerks beeping their horns when you slow down looking for a parking

spot; hey, at times like these, the city can seem like a harsh reality. Enter a rescued dog. Oh, the feelings of unconditional love a wet nose, panting breath, wagging tale and a friendly tongue can invoke. Dogs actually care. I mean, we humans have bred them to care, so they better.

Friend-Maker Your canine friend can be a chick or guy magnet. Dog lovers usually like other dog lovers, and if you own a friendly enough dog who doesn’t flip out at the sight of another mutt, or better yet, is a canine parkfly, you may be able to parlay the doggie

fun into a friendly conversation. This is a great way to meet p e o p l e , whether you “like them like them,” or just “like them.”

Exercise OK, let’s clear this up right away: I’m not suggesting you get a dog only for the fact that you’ll be getting sufficient exercise walking or even jogging alongside the pooch. But, on the other hand, if you’re a lazy sort and consider walking to the fridge a chore, you just turned 30 and your physique is starting to look it, or you desperately need the motivation to get out that door with a pair of tennis shoes on your feet, having a dog makes you make the effort.

Dogs need to be walked, some more than others. Who knows, maybe you’ll find that you enjoy your 20-minute walk with your buddy so much that it has you looking into walking more on your own? Either way, if you own a dog, preferably an active breed, this could only benefit your health. No matter what your mood, you have to let them at least relieve themselves. Hopefully, your Lab or Springer Spaniel mix will demand you get your rear moving on that sidewalk! For those of you in wheelchairs, there’s a good video from PUSHliving.com that gives you a nice demonstration on how to walk your dog while in a wheelchair. At the time this video was published, site founder Deborah Davis was looking for suggestions on making a contraption for just this purpose. n By Scott D. for ApartmentShowcase

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Fantastic ‘Island’: Now THIS is how to do a Kong film An action movie that comes out in March, has a relatively short running time and is based on an existing franchise is almost sure to suck. Almost. Because “Kong: Skull Island” doesn’t. Dear readers, it could have been so bad. A group of people (Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman and a whole lot of cannon fodder) go to a mysterious island. In true American style, they immediately begin bombing it for oil. Sorry — for science. Science. This irritates a bunch of giant monsters, including our titular ape. This leads to people getting killed in so many different ways that

you can practically hear the brainstorming session (“What if the lizard has a giant tongue that can grab the guy?” “Bird things rip his arm off!” “Personally, I feel that the classic squoosh is always a good option”). “Kong” is the cinematic representation of the phrase “GORILLA! F--- YEAH!” It’s pretty clear that director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“The Kings of Summer”) knew where “Kong” could go wrong, and he avoided those traps. He lets us see Kong — an astounding feat of CGI that mixes muscled power with soulful, communicative eyes — less than 10 minutes into the film, rather than dragging it out to a big reveal. The movie is brisk, with a nice rhythm that keeps the action coming without being overwhelming. The fight

scenes are creatively staged and, while it’s easy to see most of the scares coming, they’re never manipulative. All of that, though, simply means that Vogt-Roberts didn’t make a bad movie. He embraced what a King Kong movie should be, and took that to its highest level. The tropes are there (people with mysterious pasts, people with ulterior motives), but they’re embraced with a wink that walks right up to the edge of self-consciousness. The movie takes place right after the end of the Vietnam War. Why? So you can get lots of shots of soldiers working out to classic rock. Tom Hiddleston basically poses his way through the film like it’s a monster-infested American Eagle catalog, while Samuel L. Jackson is at his Samuel L.

‘Kong: Skull Island’ (PG-13, 120 min.) DIRECTOR: Jordan Vogt-Roberts STARS: Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman IN A NUTSHELL: A scientific expedition to an uncharted island turns (surprise!!) into an explosive war between man and monster.

Lorde drops new song “Liability,” reveals that her sophomore album “Melodrama” will debut June 16

Jackson-iest. There are cliched lines delivered in ponderous tones (which you’d expect in a King Kong movie), immediately followed by Kong awesomely ripping something apart and yelling about it (also expected). Instead of trying to subvert expectations — a problem that has plagued modern monster movies, the best example being 2014’s terrible “Godzilla” — “Kong: Skull Island” polishes them until they gleam. Really, “Kong” is like an excellent drag queen in movie form: a blend of camp, exaggeration and craftsmanship so engaging that you know it’s not real, but the facade is so fun to watch that it doesn’t matter. “Kong: Skull Island” doesn’t pretend it’s anything that it’s not (a movie about a giant gorilla who is here to eat bananas and smash helicopters, and he’s all out of bananas). More than that, it’s a joyful celebration of what it is, and that joy comes through the screen. It doesn’t just avoid pitfalls — it soars over them. Read Kristen’s musings on movies each week in Express.

R, 107 min.

“Neruda” is a delightful mishmash of two disparate genres: film noir and the biopic. Director Pablo Larrain and screenwriter Guillermo Calderon take an unconventionally oblique approach to honor Pablo Neruda, the beloved Chilean poet and politician. Overall, its effect is cerebral, but not emotional. It is rare to see a fact-based film with this much daring or formal beauty. ALAN ZILBERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘The Ottoman Lieutenant’ R, 109 min.

“The Ottoman Lieutenant” follows a love triangle (involving characters played by Josh Hartnett, Michiel Huisman and Hera Hilmar) set against the fall of the Ottoman Empire. But don’t expect any evidence of war crimes. It isn’t so much a war movie as a melodrama that uses violence as a backdrop for romantic intrigue. STEPHANIE MERRY (TWP)

HBO to make miniseries on 2016 election BLEECKER STREET MEDIA

‘The Last Word’ just doesn’t walk the talk FILM REVIEW There’s a piece of great advice in “The Last Word”: “If you don’t have anything nice to say about someone, say nothing at all.” If that standard were to be applied to this review, it would render it the world’s shortest piece of film criticism. The story of a lonely and unlovable crank (Shirley MacLaine) who tries to bully a young obituary writer (Amanda Seyfried) into helping her burnish her legacy is just as weird and unrewarding an endeavor as it sounds. Director Mark Pellington (“I Melt With You”) at least recognizes that the setup is a showcase for MacLaine do her blunt-spoken-battle-ax thing. For some fans of MacLaine, there may be a perverse pleasure taken

disadvantaged children, treated almost like a piece of property. The unseemly racism embodied by this miniature version of the Magical Negro stock character — who curses like a sailor but is just waiting to be polished by her white benefactor so that she can, in turn, confer redemption on Harriet — is nauseating. Then there’s the radio station manager (Thomas Sadoski) who hires Harriet as his new morning-drive DJ. He bonds with Anne over their shared love for the Kinks. Could love be in store for them? You probably know the answer to that question, in a moribund movie that doesn’t have a spontaneous or surprising bone in its body. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

In “The Last Word,” a writer helps a woman pen her obituary … because that’s how obituaries work.

HBO announced Thursday its plans to chronicle “the story of Donald Trump’s dramatic, improbable victory over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election” for a new miniseries. The project will be based on a forthcoming book from authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, whose 2010 book about the 2008 election inspired the Emmy-winning HBO film “Game Change.” The same team behind the “Game Change” film has been enlisted for this yet-to-betitled miniseries; Jay Roach is back to direct, as well as executive produce with Playtone’s Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman. John Kerry signs book deal to release a memoir John Kerry, former secretary of state, U.S. senator and presidential candidate, has signed a book deal with Simon & Schuster. The book, a memoir covering his life from childhood to recent years, does not yet have a title or release date. “This is the first opportunity I’ve had in a long time to pause and look back, with an eye toward looking forward,” Kerry said in a statement. Kerry Washington to produce film adaptation of ‘The Mothers’ novel Warner Bros. is making a film adaptation of Brit Bennett’s debut novel, “The Mothers,” with Kerry Washington as a producer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Bennett will also pen the film’s script. The book, a New York Times bestseller, is about a big secret that rocks a small black community in a Southern California town. (EXPRESS)

‘Rough Night’

‘Geostorm’

EXPECTED RELEASE: June 16

EXPECTED RELEASE: Oct. 20

SUMMARY: Five friends gather for a bachelorette weekend. There is hilarity, there is drinking, there is a headband with pink penises on it. Then they accidentally kill a stripper. It looks like it’s going to be as hilariously awesome as “Bridesmaids,” but with more cocaine and involuntary manslaughter.

SUMMARY: So there’s this space station or possibly a satellite, and it controls the weather. Something goes wrong (we assume this isn’t on purpose), leading to big storms and the heretofore unknown weather of fire shooting from the ground and Labrador-sized hailstones. For meteorologists at least, this should be a hail of a good time. K.P.K.

“If you catch me randomly smiling to myself it’s [because] I remembered again this patrol pig exists.”

Carlos always has a smile on his face and greets everyone. His kind words and warm attitude always brighten my day, and also the fact that he always remembers my face is pretty impressive, too!

@TANYA_CHEN tweeting about the “patrol pig” who was seen strutting

around NYC recently wearing a vest with an NYPD badge on it. Two NYPD officers happened upon the aspiring member of their police force and posed for pictures with it, the New York Post reported. Twitter users loved the pig too. “What a ham,” @MadHatterKrista tweeted. “This is the only time u can call an officer a pig and not offend anyone and I am living for it,” wrote @g_rey23.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’re not likely to succeed at everything you have in the works, so it’s time to restructure your priorities. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may be steering yourself the wrong way. A loved one points out a few salient facts that affect you directly. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You can work wonders when you are given a little more latitude to experiment. Others will soon follow your lead. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Experience can be your best friend — and the most effective teacher. Pay close attention to where you find yourself and whom you meet.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You

may not trust those who tell you what you want to hear, so it’s clearly time to find out on your own what you need to know.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may be tempted to recuse yourself from a certain situation, but others will assure you that there is no conflict of interest. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may have to take a different route from the one you planned with the assistance of an expert. What would he or she advise?

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are dating, sources told E! News. “It’s not serious at all,” a source said. “J. Lo is just dating.” Neither the pop star nor the former New York Yankees star have commented. E! learned in February that Rodriguez attended one of Lopez’s shows at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, with a source saying then that things were “friendly” between them. News also broke last month that Lopez and rapper Drake had ended their rumored relationship, and that Rodriguez had broken up with tech CEO Anne Wojcicki. (EXPRESS)

HOW TO REACH US

Samuel L. Jackson has clarified his previous criticism of the casting of black British actors as African-Americans. “It was not a slam against them, but it was just a comment about how Hollywood works in an interesting sort of way,” Jackson said Wednesday. He had mused to radio station Hot 97 that “Get Out,” which stars British actor Daniel Kaluuya as a black man who meets his white girlfriend’s family, would have been different “with an American brother who really feels that.” (AP)
