Police have no idea why a 5-foot-long dead shark was left in the parking lot of a Florida Wal-Mart just days before another one was found nearby. St. Johns County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the store last week after the shark was found in a shopping cart. The owner of an RV parked nearby told police he put the shark in the cart after finding it on his hood. Days later, another dead shark was reported in a driveway in Vilano Beach. (AP)
Members of a knitting club at Fuller Village, a retirement home in Milton, Mass., have hatched a plan to keep chickens warm during the New England winter. They’re knitting them sweaters. The project benefits birds kept on a neighboring estate known as the Mary M.B. Wakefield Charitable Trust. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said Monday the city is preapred for snow.
a planned conference call with regional leaders at 4 a.m. Tuesday to decide if schools and city government offices would close. “We haven’t made any decisions,” Bowser said. “We’ll wait and see what’s on the ground.” Roadways throughout the region already bore telltale white streaks that showed they had been pre-treated in advance of what was forecast to begin as sleet or freezing rain before turning into snowfall near the tail end of Monday’s evening
Metro reducing service Metrorail will operate today on a Saturday schedule, with trains roughly every 12 minutes, because of the forecast for snow. Buses will start on a severe snow service plan, with only selected routes on major roadways. Metro also said MetroAccess Paratransit service is suspended today. rush hour and continuing into the afternoon today. Snowfall predictions ranged from an inch or two in the counties southwest of D.C., to 8 inches in parts of Montgomery and Loudoun, and 15 inches near the Maryland-Pennsylvania border. Trundling northward, the storm was expected to bring blizzard conditions to New York and New England. The District and transportation departments in Maryland and Virginia began deploying crews as early as Sunday. D.C. officials said major roads had been treated with a brine solution, and 200 plows were ready for deployment Monday. The city also activated its cold-weather emergency plan to begin coaxing the homeless off the streets and into temporary shelters. For Washington-area commuters, there was a mixed bag of opinions on whether it would, in fact, snow — and if so, how intense the storm would be. “Some people think it’s going to be 2 to 4 [inches], some people think it’s going to be 6, 8,” said Abdrrahim Karim-James, 32. “We don’t know for sure. But I think it’s gonna be a lot.” ASHLEY HALSEY III AND LORI ARATANI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

REGION As the first big snowstorm of the season threatened to blanket the region Monday night into today, Congress halted work, and state, county and school officials were tracking the weather to see if they should too. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe declared a state of emergency. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser flew home a day early from a business trip to Texas, and Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan said that despite recent warmer weather, “It’s still winter and this storm is coming. “Some people are sort of lulled into this false sense of security because we had this great 70-degree weather and I think everybody thinks it’s springtime,” Hogan said during a visit to a salt distribution facility in Annapolis. “This is a serious winter storm. It will be the biggest event we’ve had this season and people need to be prepared; they need to be safe.” Bowser, who has made it a priority to keep the city open during snow storms, said city officials would likely wait until

‘Gut punch’ for Secret Service
METRO
Attacker: You could have said, ‘Excuse me’
THE DISTRICT A California man arrested after jumping the White House fence and walking up to the grand south entrance carrying Mace was in federal court Monday amid continuing questions over how he got so close to the executive mansion without being challenged. President Trump was in the residence at the time of the breach. The accused intruder, Jonathan T. Tran, 26, of Milpitas, Calif., faces a maximum of 10 years in prison on one count of entering restricted grounds while carrying a dangerous weapon after his arrest Friday. Jonathan Wackrow, who formerly spent 14 years in the Secret Service, including serving in former President Barack Obama’s detail, called the incident a “gut punch” to an agency still recovering from a 2014 incident in which Omar Gonzalez made his way deep into the executive mansion before being tackled by an off-duty agent. “What has changed in three years?” said Wackrow, who is now executive director of risk-mitigation company RANE. “Zero.” As in the intrusion by Gonzalez, Wackrow said, multiple layers of protection had to fail for Tran to be able to approach the presidential residence after surveillance video is said to have showed him jumping a fence near the Treasury Building on East Executive Avenue. Tran was arrested carrying

two cans of Mace, a book on Trump, a U.S. passport and a laptop containing a letter addressed to Trump about Russian hackers, saying he had found “information of relevance,” according to a criminal complaint filed Saturday. Tran stated he had jumped the fence and added, “I am a friend of the president,” Secret Service officer Wayne Azevedo wrote in an affidavit. In his letter, Tran also said that he has “been called schizophrenic,” was being followed and that his phone and email were being read by others. At the Monday hearing in Washington, federal Magistrate Judge Robin M. Meriweather released Tran under condition that he report for supervision to the federal court in San Jose, Calif., and be subject to GPS monitoring, mental health evaluation and, if necessary, treatment. His next hearing in D.C. is set for April 13. Prosecutors requested and the

defense also agreed that Tran not travel more than 100 miles from his home in Milpitas, that he stay away from the White House at all times and from the District except for his case, and that he not possess a firearm, destructive device, or dangerous weapon. Trump on Saturday praised the service for doing “a fantastic job last night” responding to a
“troubled person,” as security experts called the incident the latest warning of ongoing vulnerabilities at the Secret Service’s most visible and sensitive post. Wackrow said that in addition to defeating newly installed “pencil-point” spikes atop the fence at the property that are intended to slow down would-be jumpers, Tran’s alleged incursion should have triggered intrusion detection and video surveillance alarms. Tran also would have “walked by multiple, multiple uniformed division posts at the White House,” Wackrow said. “All of those things did not react to this individual traversing a significant amount of distance at the White House,” Wackrow said. If failures were not tied to the technical security system, then personnel did not respond properly despite known vulnerabilities, he said. FAIZ SIDDIQUI AND SPENCER S. HSU (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Police say a passenger on Metro was punched in the face last week after sitting down next to a younger man who had refused to scoot over. Metro Transit police said the Blue Line passenger had approached a man blocking the aisle and asked him to move over so he could sit down. The man refused, so the passenger slid past him to the window seat. According to a police report, the suspect said, “You could have said ‘Excuse me’ before sitting.” Then the man punched him and fled. Ex-mayor pleads guilty in drug case Richard Silverthorne was arrested in August in sex-for-meth sting FAIRFAX CITY The former mayor of Fairfax City pleaded guilty to distributing methamphetamine Monday in connection with a high-profile sex-for-drugs sting that ended his political career last year. Richard “Scott” Silverthorne, 50, gave $200 worth of methamphetamine to an undercover police officer in August in exchange for what he thought would be an
orgy at a Tysons Corner hotel, Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Kathleen Bilton said in Fairfax County Circuit Court on Monday. The sting was staged after Fairfax County police received a tip in July that Silverthorne was using a website called Bare Back Real Time to meet men and possibly exchange methamphetamine for sex, Bilton told a judge. Police created a fake profile to lure Silverthorne, who was using an account under the name “Anotherfundcbottom.” Unaware he was communicating with

Bilton said. A judge ordered Silverthorne to jail until his sentencing on June 9. Silverthorne had remained free on his own personal recognizance after the arrest. Silverthorne faces up to 40 years in prison when he is sentenced, but will likely only get a light sentence — or even

local VIRGINIA Laura Tarantino would love to adopt a child. But under Virginia law, she cannot try for now. In 2009, when she was 21, Tarantino was arrested a second time for possession of heroin and went to prison for 15 months. The felony prevents her from adopting for a decade after her conviction, under a law that imposes a ban twice as long as federal standards on adoptions. Now 28, Tarantino is mounting a challenge to a law she says is unfair, antiquated and desperately needs to be changed. “It is
like someone driving their car through the new home I am trying to build,” Tarantino said. “It hurts every bone in my body.” Adopted herself as a child, Tarantino wants to expand the family she has in Alexandria with her husband, Frederick, and their 5-year-old son, Tyler. Tarantino, who said she has written hundreds of letters to lawmakers in Richmond, hopes to persuade legislators to shorten the time period or begin case-bycase considerations, as already happens in nearby Delaware. nation+world Prosecutor says film’s edit of Ferguson video distorts the incident FERGUSON, MO. Surveillance video showing Michael Brown in a Ferguson, Mo., convenience store in the early hours of the day he was fatally shot by a police officer was heavily edited for a documentary, a prosecutor said Monday. St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch dismissed the footage from the documentary “Stranger Fruit” during a news conference. “This is not new information; it’s certainly not a surprise to anyone,” McCulloch said. “It’s certainly not relevant or material to anything that occurred later
that day at the store.” The filmmakers and others say the video suggests Brown, a black 18-year-old, didn’t rob Ferguson Market & Liquor before white Ferguson officer Darren Wilson shot him on a neighborhood street in August 2014. Meanwhile, a lawyer for Ferguson Market & Liquor says he will release an unedited version of the video showing Brown in the store. The lawyer, Jay Kanzler, said Sunday that he wants to disprove the claims that Brown didn’t rob the store on Aug. 9, 2014. He also said the video used in the documentary was edited. The documentary premiered Saturday at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. About 100 protesters gathered outside the store Sunday night in

One of the filmmakers, Jason Pollock, told The New York Times he believes the footage shows Brown trading a small amount of marijuana for a bag of cigarillos around 1 a.m. on Aug. 9, 2014. The video doesn’t clearly show what was exchanged, but shows Brown leaving behind the cigarillos. Pollock reasons that Brown intended to come back later for the bag of cigarillos. But Kanzler said no such transaction took place, and that Brown stole the cigarillos when he returned to the store about 10 hours later. “There was no understanding. No agreement. Those folks didn’t sell him cigarillos for pot,” Kanzler told The Times. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

Intel makes driverless car push King stands by controversial ‘babies’ tweet POLITICS Democrats and some Republicans on Monday criticized a veteran GOP congressman for saying America can’t restore “our civilization with somebody else’s babies” and warning of a liberal effort to destroy Western civilization through immigration. On Twitter on Sunday, Rep. Steve King of Iowa paid tribute to far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders, who opposes immigration. King said Wilders “understands that culture and demographics are our destiny. We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.” Monday on CNN, King stood by his remarks. He said, “I meant exactly what I said,” and noted that he delivers the same message to countries in Europe. “We need to get our birth rates up or Europe will be entirely transformed within a half a century or a little more.” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s spokesman, Drew Hammill, called on GOP leadership to condemn King’s statements. “Steve King’s vile racism has no place in decent society, much less in the U.S. Congress,” Hammill said. “But once again, disgusting hatred has been met with deafening silence from Speaker [Paul] Ryan.” AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for Ryan, said that “[Ryan] clearly disagrees and believes America’s long history of inclusiveness is one of its great strengths.” KEVIN FREKING (AP)
TECHNOLOGY Intel will buy Israel’s Mobileye in a deal valued at about $15.3 billion, instantly propelling the computer chip and technology giant to the forefront of autonomous vehicle technology. The deal announced Monday combines Mobileye’s marketleading software that processes information from cameras and other sensors with Intel’s hardware, data centers and its own software, giving automakers a one-stop place to shop for fully autonomous systems. “This acquisition essentially merges the intelligent eyes of the autonomous car with the intelligent brain that actually drives the car,” Intel CEO Brian

Tech company acquires market-leading software in $15.3B Mobileye deal
Mobileye’s software, which reads inputs from cameras, radars and laser sensors, can monitor speed limits and warn drivers of potential collisions.
Krzanich said. The deal, expected to close by year’s end, will allow the companies to bring components to market faster at a lower cost, solidifying Mobileye’s leadership position, officials said. Automakers and some technology companies are testing
autonomous vehicles in California, Michigan and other states. Nearly all use Mobileye’s software, which reads inputs from cameras, radar and laser sensors and makes decisions on what an autonomous car should do. Jerusalem-based Mobileye says it has contracts with
27 different automakers. It also controls about 70 percent of the market for software that runs automatic emergency braking and semi-autonomous cruise control systems that are in cars and trucks on the road today. Autonomous cars will need higher levels of connectivity to the internet and access to bigger data centers, which Intel can provide, Krzanich said. The two companies also will combine highly detailed mapping efforts. “If you put all of that together, you really get an end-to-end solution for autonomous driving,” said Mobileye Chairman and co-founder Amnon Shashua, who will continue to lead the combined autonomous car unit. In the deal, Intel Corp. will pay $63.54 for each share of Mobileye N.V. The boards of both companies still have to approve the transaction. TOM KRISHER (AP)

Will Trump set his sights on the moon? NASA has a new rocket and spaceship. How will they be put to use? SPACE NASA is building a jumbo rocket. It’s called the Space Launch System, or the SLS. The core stage of the SLS is slowly materializing. Technicians have completed the largest component — a liquid hydrogen fuel tank that’s 133 feet from nose to tail. Construction of the core stage of the SLS program is handled in Louisiana, at the Michoud Assembly Facility. The vast structure survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and then a direct hit from a tornado earlier this year. But the new rocket will have to survive the unpredictable crosswinds of Washington. President Trump is now in charge of the space program, and no one in Washington seems to have a clear idea what’s going to happen next. Trump has expressed interest in President John F. Kennedy’s vow in 1961 to put American astronauts on the moon by the end of the 1960s. Thus, everyone expects Trump to try to create a “Kennedy moment.” The 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing is coming up in two years. For NASA, that’s a huge anniversary — and suddenly everyone seems to be

talking about moon missions. President George W. Bush wanted U.S. boots on the moon by 2020. President Barack Obama killed the Bush program, saying we’d been there and done that. But with Republicans in control of both Congress and the White House, the moon looms larger. Last month, in his address to Congress, Trump made a single, enigmatic comment about space: “American footprints on distant worlds are not too big a dream.” Did that mean the moon? Mars? Trump hasn’t nominated anyone yet to lead NASA, nor has he picked a science adviser. He is expected to re-form the long-disbanded National Space Council, which would be headed by Vice President Pence and
oversee civilian and military space programs. In the meantime, civil servants at NASA are re-examining the current human spaceflight schedule to see whether there’s a way to do something dramatic before the end of Trump’s term. The first SLS launch, penciled in for late next year, will also be the first time it is paired with the new Orion crew capsule. The launch will test the hardware and life support equipment. Mannequins will serve as the crew. But last month, NASA’s acting administrator, Robert Lightfoot, asked his team to look at the feasibility of adding astronauts to the first test flight. The study should be finished within weeks. JOEL ACHENBACH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS Fourteen million Americans would lose coverage next year under House Republican legislation remaking the nation’s healthcare system, and that figure would grow to 24 million by 2026, Congress’ nonpartisan budget analysts projected Monday. By 2026, the office estimated, a total of 52 million people would lack insurance — including 28 million already expected to lack coverage under Obama’s statute. The figures dealt a blow to a GOP drive already under fire from both parties and large segments of the medical industry. The report by the Congressional Budget Office flies in the face of President Trump’s aim of “insurance for everybody,” and he had been assailing the credibility of the CBO in advance of the release. Administration officials quickly took strong issue with it. Health Secretary Tom Price said the White House “disagrees strenuously” with the report. Price complained that the CBO only looked at the House bill, and not the two other parts of their three-phase plan. He also said that it will cover more individuals and lower costs. House Speaker Paul Ryan also defended the GOP health-care bill. A statement Monday said that Ryan is focusing on lower premiums and improved “access to quality, affordable care.” The Wisconsin Republican took the same approach as Price and said that the CBO analysis does not take into account additional steps the GOP-led Congress and Trump administration would take to lower costs and

to millions of people who buy coverage. The budget office attributed the projected increases in uninsured Americans to the GOP bill’s elimination of tax penalties for people who don’t buy insurance, its changes in federal subsidies for people who buy policies and its curbing of Medicaid, the federal-state program that helps low-income people buy coverage. While long anticipated, the budget office’s adverse estimates provide a detailed, credible appraisal of the Republican effort by an agency with a four-decade history of even-handedness that’s currently headed by a GOP appointee. It feeds ammunition to Democrats and to some Republicans who’ve argued the GOP measure would toss millions of voters off coverage they gained under Obama’s overhaul. ALAN FRAM AND
EUROPE Scotland’s leader delivered a shocking twist to Britain’s EU exit drama Monday, announcing that she will seek authority to hold a new independence referendum in the next two years because Britain is dragging Scotland out of the EU against its will. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, above, said she would move quickly to give voters a new chance to leave the United Kingdom because Scotland was being forced into a “hard Brexit” that it didn’t support. Britons decided in a June referendum to leave the EU, but Scots voted by 62 to 38 percent to remain. Sturgeon spoke in Edinburgh hours before Britain’s Parliament approved a Brexit bill that will allow the U.K. to start the formal, two-year exit process from the EU by March 31. Sturgeon said she would ask the Scottish Parliament next week to start the referendum process, to be held between the fall of 2018 and the spring of 2019. She said by then, details of Britain’s deal with the EU would be clear and Scottish voters could make “an informed choice.” The British government must agree before a legally binding referendum can be held. It didn’t say Monday whether it would do so, but the move drew a rebuke from Prime Minister Theresa May, who said a second referendum would be hugely disruptive. May accused Sturgeon of political “tunnel vision.” JILL LAWLESS AND

increase choices. The CBO report also undercuts a central argument that Republicans have cited for swiftly rolling back former President Barack Obama’s health-care overhaul: that the health insurance markets created under the 2010 law are unstable and about to implode. The congressional experts said that largely would not be the case and that the market for individual health insurance policies “would probably be stable in most areas either under current law or the [GOP] legislation.” Even though Republican tax credits would be less generous than those under “Obamacare,” the combination of those credits and other changes to lower premiums would attract enough healthy people to stabilize markets under the new plan, the report said. In a talking point embraced by Republicans, the budget

CBO premium estimates Initial rise: Average premiums for individuals would rise in 2018 and 2019 by 15 to 20 percent compared to current law, because Republicans would eliminate the penalties designed to induce people to buy insurance coverage. Decrease in 2020: In 2020, premiums would begin to fall in comparison to the current law, and by 2026, average premiums for people buying individual coverage would be roughly 10 percent lower. Age variation: Older people could be charged more for insurance under the proposed law, so premiums will vary for different ages. (AP)

Scherzer: I’ll be ready for opening day NATIONALS When Max Scherzer reported to training camp in West Palm Beach, Fla., last month, he doubted he would be ready for the start of the regular season, and the Nationals started preparing as though Scherzer would miss some time. But that was before Scherzer began experimenting with a three-finger fastball, which has allowed him to build arm strength without aggravating the stress fracture in his right ring finger. He debuted the new grip playing catch and then tried it throwing long toss, which was good enough for his bosses to allow him to throw it off a mound. After a couple of bullpen sessions, a three-inning live batting practice session and a two-inning simulated game appearance,
Scherzer said he steadfastly believes he’ll be ready for the start of the season, which falls in line with what manager Dusty Baker said Sunday. “He’s a little bit behind but not as far behind as it looked like he was going to be at the beginning,” Baker said. “He’s back on pace I think.” Earlier Sunday, Scherzer threw 28 pitches in an intrasquad simulated game on one of the back fields at the Nationals’ spring training complex. Scherzer said Monday the session went well, which was pitching coach Mike Maddux’s verdict Sunday. Maddux said Scherzer is scheduled to pitch in a minor league game against another organization — those are still controlled settings — and throw three innings. On Monday, Scherzer said that would be “TBD.” If Scherzer is able to pitch in a Grapefruit League game instead, that would give him the opportunity to pitch in three exhibition games before opening

after opening the season at home against the Marlins. Scherzer then wouldn’t have to pitch until April 12 at home against the Cardinals if the four other members of the rotation pitch every fifth day. If the Nationals elect that route, they could place Scherzer on the 10-day disabled list, which has replaced the 15-day DL beginning this season, and backdate it as long as Scherzer doesn’t appear in a game during that period. That would grant them a spot on the active roster to use elsewhere. JORGE CASTILLO

REDSKINS Despite the uncertainty hovering over quarterback Kirk Cousins, he and his teammates are proceeding as if he will be with Washington in 2017. Newly signed wide receiver Terrelle Pryor and Cousins traded text messages over the weekend and made plans to meet with other receivers soon to get a head start on offseason practices — which start late next month. In an introductory conference call Monday, Pryor said he’s looking forward to training with a “supporting cast” of new
teammates. Based on everything he’s heard from coaches, team officials and Cousins himself, he expects to play with the quarterback. Last Thursday, Pryor, 27, signed a one-year, $8 million deal with Washington. On Friday, Cousins signed a franchise tender that guarantees him $23.9 million for this season. The Redskins have reportedly rebuffed Cousins’ request to be traded. Pryor, a 6-foot-4, 223-pound converted quarterback, made the switch to receiver full-time with the Browns last season, when he

Pryor said he’s excited about his new QB, but the Redskins’ aggressive approach in free agency was the biggest factor in his decision to join them. “I played with six quarterbacks last year, so I don’t think it will get that bad,” Pryor said. “Obviously, I would like to play with Kirk. QB Foles agrees to back up Wentz under 2-year deal
High school girl in a hijab not allowed to enter game
The doors to Washington’s locker room in Anaheim stayed closed for roughly 15 minutes after a 5-2 loss to the Ducks on Sunday. The team always meets after games, but this session ran long because the Caps reached unfamiliar territory — their first four-game losing streak since November 2014. Entering a home game against the Wild tonight (7, CSN), the team knows what it needs to fix. The Capitals have taken too many penalties while scoring too few goals, and some turnovers in their own end have cost them. The Capitals were 17-2-1 going into its bye week but are now 5-6-1 since the break. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Nick Foles is returning to the city where he had his most success. The Eagles agreed to terms Monday on a two-year contract with Foles, who will serve as the backup quarterback for Carson Wentz two years after former coach Chip Kelly traded him to St. Louis. The Eagles are expected to trade or release Chase Daniel, who signed a $21 million, three-year contract last year. Foles, 28, was drafted in the third round in 2012 by Philadelphia under Andy Reid. He thrived under Kelly a year later, going to the Pro Bowl after throwing 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions in 10 starts en route to an NFC East title. (AP)
In a lopsided loss March 3 at Oxon Hill High in Prince George’s County, Watkins Mill coach Donita Adams tried to let every girl play. But, because of a rarely enforced rule, she left Je’Nan Hayes on the bench. The junior wasn’t allowed to play because she wears a hijab as part of her Muslim faith. A head official informed Adams that “documented evidence” was needed to prove Hayes, who played in 24 games this season without incident, covers her head for religious reasons. Clean up your workout It’s time to make re-evaluating your fitness routine a part of spring cleaning WORKOUTS Spring is almost here, which means people are starting to weed through closets, kitchens and garages, resulting in hauls to Goodwill, curbside freebies and overflowing trash cans. This ubiquitous wish to clean and improve isn’t just for your home — here’s how you can translate spring cleaning to your health and fitness.
Inventory Jenny DeMarco, a D.C.-area personal trainer, suggests doing an inventory of what works and what doesn’t in your health and fitness routine. “If you made a New Year’s resolution, it’s good to check in every few months and just ask some inventory questions,” DeMarco says. Among her suggested questions: What was the original goal? Where am I now? How far do I have to go? What is helping/ hindering that goal? If you’re having a difficult time sorting through what needs to stay and what needs to go in your routine, it could be a good
time to hire a trainer. “Especially if you feel like you’ve plateaued, a trainer can help you figure out what is going on,” DeMarco says.
Switch up your routine If your routine has been consistent for a couple of months, it might be time to change things up to yield continued progress. This could mean increasing intensity, frequency or duration, or adding a new component. If there was no flexibility and core ingredient in your routine, then maybe add yoga. “We get into a comfort zone, and we tend to stay there,” DeMarco says. But it’s not just about continuing to progress, it’s also about staying injury-free. Injuries often start to pop up after six to eight weeks of a one-sided or repetitive-motion activity (such as running), says Robert Gillanders, a physical therapist with Point Performance Therapy in Bethesda.
Rest and recovery Recovery, including sleep, is

crucial for our soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) to recover and heal themselves after exercise, Gillanders says. “Sometimes the best thing for the body is to work out less,” he says. Rebecca Scritchfield, a wellness coach and nutritionist in the Washington area, says that when the body doesn’t get adequate sleep (seven to eight hours a night), it might be better to sleep in or take a long yoga class instead of going to the gym and running or lifting weights. “Part of self-care is to listen to your body,” Scritchfield says. Also remember that a lack of

sleep tends to be linked to bad eating habits. Without enough rest, the body releases stress hormones that make us crave salt, fat and sugar, Scritchfield says. “Sleep is absolutely critical to your success,” she says.
Nutrition Part of recovery is also to nourish the body correctly — giving it enough good protein, carbs, vitamins, minerals and fat to work at its best. Scritchfield says you should aim to fill half your plate with veggies, followed by whole grains and a healthy lean protein. She suggests doing a kitchen and pantry makeover to get rid of expired products and to donate unused nonperishables to food banks. A decluttering of your kitchen can be part of creating a healthy eating environment. Fill that empty clean space with things that promote healthy habits, such as a large bowl of fresh fruit. “If you are looking right at it,” she says, “you are more likely to eat it.” GABRIELLA BOSTON

You’ve got time to run New research shows that while elite runners peak at age 35, the rest of us may not peak until we’re 50. These are the results of a study published in Plos One last month that examined 16 years of data from the Chicago, New York and Boston marathons. Researchers set out to determine the age at which both elite runners and recreational runners — or the average runner, defined as the median finisher within each age group — begin to slow. They found that the fastest marathoners for both men and women are in the 25-to-34 age group and that performance begins to decline for elite runners around age 35. But recreational runners have much more in the tank at 35 and may continue improving until they’re 50. BEN OPIPARI (TWP)

from the city because of his job change. Making plans with friends is harder, my commute is miserable and we are not near anything except people starting families (not something we’re doing anytime soon). I’ve tried to broach this, but he’s glad we moved. How do I start this conversation? VERY UNHAPPY IN THE BURBS Starting the conversation is coconut cream pie compared to actually working toward a solution. Figure out what’s stopping you from being more forthcoming about your misery: fear he’ll dig in his heels further? Guilt that his happiness isn’t overriding your dissatisfaction? Some deeper questions about what you aren’t willing to give up for this relationship,
or your overall compatibility? That’s the key word: relationship. You both matter, and when your goals are at odds, you work until you find the best fit. Maybe a new neighborhood entirely, the possibility of telework, an attempt to explore more local activities, or even a timeline to revisit the possibility of moving back. Either way, the sooner you talk, the better.
and sold her house. She was distraught, so my husband and I said she could stay in our guest room. Three months later, she still doesn’t have a job, isn’t paying us rent and is stressing me out. She’s nice and does cook dinner sometimes, but I am starting to resent her. How do I get her out without losing the friendship? HAVE HAD ENOUGH The friendliest thing you can do for her is keep her from damaging the relationship irrevocably, so view this conversation as a positive step. Choose a relaxed time and keep it informal, so it doesn’t feel like an intervention. Mention the positives of her living with you: Have you grown closer in certain ways? Gotten to do more of an activity you enjoy? Really enjoyed her paella? Segue to the fact that as the seasons change, you’re figuring out long-term plans with other potential visitors, and it would be helpful to have a timeline for when the guest room will be available again. Be kind and continue with the vibe of support. No need to word things perfectly, as the alternative — saying nothing at all — is what will really kill the friendship. Amy Krouse Rosenthal, best-selling author, dies
NBC
Amy Krouse Rosenthal — author, filmmaker and speaker — died Monday at age 51. She was diagnosed in 2015 with ovarian cancer. Her death was confirmed by her literary agent. The Chicago native completed more than 30 books, including journals, memoirs and picture stories. She also made short films, gave TED talks and did commentary for NPR. Earlier this month, she wrote a widely read “Modern Love” column for The New York Times, “You May Want to Marry My Husband.” In it, she created a dating profile for her husband after her death. (AP)
“A murderer? Who, me? Of course not — I’m just a guy minding my own business with my large butcher’s knife.”
Anne, an office assistant who has a host of rare disorders, including an inability to recognize faces; Steven Boyer plays Dwayne, a hilariously inept legal investigator. And “Glee’s” Jayma Mays plays Carol Anne, a harddriven prosecutor determined to use Larry’s case as a means to become the next district attorney. “Trial & Error” moves along at a quick clip (NBC sloughs it off two episodes at a time) while it wrings whatever’s left from the mockumentary glory days that brought us shows like “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” It’s not nearly as funny as either of those, though, and
A multifaceted man John Lithgow, who has played a psycho killer in Showtime’s “Dexter” and Winston Churchill in Netflix’s “The Crown,” credits his work on “Trial & Error” to his versatility. “I’m someone who’s known for being really funny, very scary and occasionally very touching,” he told The Associated Press. “And the role requires all those three parts.” (EXPRESS/AP)
it sometimes sacrifices its most promising potential (making fun of true-crime serializations) to pick off easier targets (making
fun of the South). Lithgow, of course, is great at just about anything he sets his mind to. His effort rubs off on his energetic co-stars, who elevate the material and give it a spark it otherwise wouldn’t have. D’Agosto is especially entertaining as an attorney exasperated by a difficult client — his straightman setups help many of the bumpkin jokes along, even when they’re predictable: “My client is innocent,” Josh tells reporters gathered at the courthouse. “This whole trial is a witch hunt.” “Uh, no,” Dwayne corrects him. “The witch hunt is on Nov. 4.” HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“[Diana] was an ordinary person put in an extraordinary circumstance. I admire her a great deal. … It’s a big role.” RYAN MURPHY, creator of FX’s “Feud” anthology, sharing with Entertainment Weekly that he’s casting for the series’ second season, about British royals Charles and Diana. The first, “Feud: Bette and Joan,” debuted earlier this month.

TV REVIEW After HBO and Netflix struck gold with serialized true-crime documentaries (“The Jinx” and “Making a Murderer”), a flood of similar projects followed, in which cold cases and suspiciously prosecuted crimes have been stretched into elaborately layered whodunits that last several episodes. It was inevitable, then, that satire would want in on this game, and that seems to be the point of NBC’s new mockumentarystyle comedy “Trial & Error” (premiering today at 10 p.m.). In it, John Lithgow stars as Larry Henderson, a South Carolina poetry professor accused of pushing his second wife, Margaret, through a plate-glass window and killing her. A similar fate befell Larry’s first wife, and that, combined with his tonedeaf reaction to both incidents, makes him a particularly unsympathetic defendant. His rich brother-in-law tells the camera that this case calls for “a Northeastern” attorney, which is how a young New York law firm associate, Josh Segal (Nicholas D’Agosto), is sent to the small town of East Peck to handle Larry’s defense. Forced to share office space in a taxidermy shop, Josh discovers just about every yokel cliche there is. Sherri Shepherd plays

Tyra Banks set to host ‘America’s Got Talent’ Tyra Banks is hosting Season 12 of “America’s Got Talent,” NBC announced Sunday. The supermodel, Emmy winner and creator of “America’s Next Top Model” will be taking over hosting duties from Nick Cannon, who left the show earlier this year after eight years in the post. Banks said she looks forward to “connecting with the dreamers” and will try to get a few to “smize” for the audience. Banks will be joining the competition series alongside returning judges Simon Cowell, Mel B., Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel. (AP)

“Wot in toadtation.” @PASTEL_JOSHLER referencing the popular hat-wearing dog “What

After the toad began visiting Chris Newsome’s front porch every night, the Alabama man decided to make the friendly creature some hats to make a friend’s child laugh. Newsome told BuzzFeed that he started making hats out of foam paper and the toad didn’t seem to mind wearing them. In this shot, the toad wears a pink hat with a feather and a monocle. Newsome first shared the pictures of his dapper toad friend on Reddit, but they were quickly seen across the internet because social media. “There’s not really any other logical option when confronted by a toad on your porch,” @MrJustinHunter tweeted.
