Vermont State Police rec room is suddenly a whole lot cooler

Had the vehicle been moving, Tahoe might have been Roadkill

A central Pennsylvania man who locked himself out of his house wound up locked up in jail once emergency responders realized he had unpaid court fines. The Altoona Mirror reports Jeffrey Jones, 35, climbed onto the roof Sunday night while trying to get into his house, but had to call 911 when he got stuck. Police say that’s when they discovered he was wanted for failing to pay about $750 in court costs and fines. (AP)

The lost-and-found inventory of the Vermont State Police just got quite a large addition — a mounted African Cape buffalo head. State police say they received a call Sunday morning directing them to a pull off Route 103 just south of Rutland, where they found the mount. Police say they believe the mount, which is worth thousands of dollars, was dropped off during the night. They suspect it was stolen. (AP)

A puppy landed on the wrong side of the law with the Phoenix police, or rather the underside of it. Police say the dog became stuck in the undercarriage of a patrol vehicle Wednesday. The Chihuahua mix ran under an officer’s Chevrolet Tahoe, climbed into the undercarriage and wouldn’t come out, even when offered a hot dog. The dog, which had no tags and no microchip, has been dubbed Tahoe. (AP)

$250 for a prix fixe meal? Not too bad! In fact, Pineapple and Pearls’ new offering is kind of a deal WHEN CHEF AARON SILVERMAN announced the April 7 launch of his fine-dining menu at Pineapple and Pearls, it wasn’t the restaurant’s imminent debut that had people talking as much as the price: $250 per person. Here’s the thing, though. It’s all-inclusive — food (12 to 16 dishes in seven to 10 courses), drinks (five or six), tax, gratuity — so you know your final bill before you even arrive. With many other fixed-price menus, it can be easy to lose track of your tab, only to shell out way more than you anticipated. (You might want a cocktail. And a glass of wine with the meal.) To provide a little bit of context, we’ve surveyed the cost of other tasting menus at high-end restaurants around D.C., comparing the “list” price, if you will, with the final damage once set beverage pairings, tax and gratuity are added. Bird experts have dubbed it “Egg-watch alert!” and a live stream of the big event can be seen at eagles.org or dceaglecam. org. The parents — a pair of eagles nicknamed Mr. President and The First Lady — built a nest high up in a tulip poplar tree. The appropriately named Egg #1 is one of two in the tree. Md. chief: Slain officer killed by friendly fire

GERMANTOWN, MD.

Officials: 8 firefighters hurt in townhouse fire

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY An undercover police officer was killed by his own colleagues’ fire as he responded to the ambush of his police station by a gunman with a death wish, the Prince George’s County police chief said Monday. While officer Jacai Colson lay mortally wounded Sunday, the gunman’s two brothers coldly recorded the firefight, police chief Hank Stawinski said, angrily tapping a podium as he provided the first details of the gunbattle. The gunman had been spraying bullets, hitting cars and even an ambulance, to draw officers outside the station. Colson also responded, jumping out of an unmarked car and wearing civilian clothes without body armor, the chief said. In the confusion, despite their restraint, one of the other officers’ bullets hit Colson, the chief said. Colson demonstrated “extreme heroism” because he “drew fire to himself and in doing so was mortally wounded,” Stawinski said. Colson was declared dead later in a hospital. The gunman, identified by police as Michael Ford, was expected to survive. His brothers, Malik and Elijah Ford, also were taken into custody, and will face dozens of charges between them, the chief said. Stawinski said federal agents have determined that there was no larger plot behind the ambush. “This appears to be the act of the Ford brothers, for their

Police say Elijah Ford and Malik Ford stood idly by and filmed video, above and left, of their brother’s attack on a Prince George’s County police station on Sunday. From left, suspects Michael Ford, 22, Elijah Ford, 18, and Malik Ford, 21, are in custody.

own motives. We have reason to suspect that the Ford brothers did not expect [Michael Ford] to survive his encounter with police,” the chief said. The chief also said there were no outstanding warrants against Ford. That information conflicts with a sheriff’s report from Greenville, S.C., which said Ford, 22, was being sought for allegedly assaulting his wife there

the day before. Colson’s fellow officers were going about their business on the quiet, rainy Sunday when the gunman opened fire on the first officer he saw outside the station around 4:30 p.m. in Landover, Md., the chief said. A gunbattle followed, with several officers shooting at the suspect, Stawinski said. “Those officers did not shrink. They bravely advanced and engaged this individual,” the chief said. Prince George’s County State’s Attorney Angela Alsobrooks called it “cowardice” and a “horrific act of evil,” promising an aggressive investigation and prosecution. The FBI and the

Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also are aiding police, spokesmen for the two federal agencies said. Colson, who would have turned 29 this week, was a four-year department veteran who worked as an undercover narcotics officer. Sheriff’s deputy Dominick Chambers, a friend from the police academy, said they celebrated their four-year anniversary as officers on Saturday, the day before Colson was killed. “He always wanted to be a police officer,” Chambers said. “Everyone is taking it real bad, real bad. I’m talking to my classmates, checking in on them. We’re not doing well.” JESSICA GRESKO (AP)

Police: Speed, alcohol may have led to car crash that left two dead Monday in Fairfax County

Fire officials in Maryland say eight firefighters were injured in a collapse at a burning townhouse in Germantown. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue officials said the fire broke out in a home early Monday. Fire Chief Scott Goldstein said the firefighters were injured when the front wall of the home and the second floor collapsed. He said the injured firefighters were taken to an area hospital, including one who has serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening. (AP) BALTIMORE

Man sentenced to prison after video stunt death A man who pleaded guilty to shooting his friend in a video stunt involving a bulletproof vest has been sentenced to prison. The Baltimore Sun reports that Mark Ramiro was sentenced to four years on Monday after pleading guilty to second-degree murder last year. Prosecutors say Ramiro and his friends intended to shoot a “Jackass”-style video stunt in their Baltimore basement in 2014. His friend, Darnell Mitchell, strapped on a bulletproof vest and instructed Ramiro to shoot him in the chest. Ramiro aimed too high, however, and shot Mitchell in the upper chest. Mitchell later died. (AP) THE DISTRICT

merican University’s Masters in Marketing degree program at the Kogod School of Business offers students the opportunity to participate in a hands-on experience designed to give them a competitive edge in pursuing their career. “This thoughtfully designed program provides an understanding of marketing tools and concepts that prepares graduates to stand out from their peers, make significant contributions from their first day on the job, and accelerate their advancement,” says Michael J. Clayton, Ph.D., Professorial Lecturer and M.S. in Marketing Program Director. A key component of the program is an experiential project, conducted in partnership with RedPeg Marketing, in which AU’s Masters in Marketing students consult with actual RedPeg clients such as Geico Auto Insurance and Enterprise Rent-a-Car. RedPeg, based in Alexandria, VA, specializes in experiential marketing--a growing segment of the marketing industry which creates events that bring new business to clients. Under the leadership of CEO Brad Nierenberg, RedPeg helped AU develop the Masters program four years ago with the objective of replicating a marketing development campaign process from beginning to end. “Today’s businesses need to reach consumers in different ways, and educating students through hands-on experience to help clients achieve their goals is an important element of this Masters program,” says Nierenberg. Students pursuing their Masters in Marketing work in cross-functional teams alongside RedPeg through its Applied Client Project. The capstone experience is designed to expose them to all aspects of the development, execution, and assessment of a marketing campaign. Students lead the project from start to finish, including market research, strategic

planning, creative implementation, and finally, evaluation of campaign results. “By working with RedPeg and their selected clients, students are able to receive feedback every step of the way, to ensure a successful campaign,” says Clayton. Nierenberg adds that he has received positive feedback from both the students and the clients with whom they have worked. Working with AU’s students is a high priority for Nierenberg. “The event business is young, dynamic, growing, and looking for new talent,” he says, adding that throughout RedPeg’s 21-year-history, some of his best employees have been students who have worked with the company during their academic studies. “The one-year, 30-credit curriculum is designed to ‘put it all together,’” says Clayton. “At the end of the program, students will have the academic and practical knowledge to excel in a marketing or advertising firm, be it a fullservice agency or a specialized shop.” In addition to the RedPeg experience, throughout the degree program students also visit numerous agencies in the DC area to help them clarify their own career goals. These and other networking opportunities, such as the Executive Speaker Series, are “how jobs are found,” says Clayton. The Masters in Marketing program attracts a diverse set of students, says Clayton, ranging from the creative to the analytical, but he emphasizes that there is room in the profession for individuals with a wide range of skills and talents. local TRANSPORTATION An electrical fire in a Metro tunnel early Monday, which caused huge delays on three subway lines, involved the same type of trackbased power cables that burned during last year’s fatal Yellow Line smoke incident in another tunnel, the transit agency said. The fire, which broke out about 4:30 a.m. just west of the McPherson Square station, fouled the morning and evening commutes of thousands of riders on the Orange, Silver and Blue lines. While repair crews worked in the tunnel, the frequency of trains on the

three lines was greatly reduced, and some stations were bypassed. The agency planned to suspend service between Foggy Bottom and Federal Triangle late Monday to complete repairs by today. Riders tweeted photos of dangerously crowded platforms and there were reports of passengers becoming ill in the close quarters. 5th Avenue and shoot somebody, I would not support him.” His comment was a reference to a previous statement by Trump that he could shoot someone on the famous Manhattan street and not lose support. Among Democrats, Clinton has been itching to look ahead to the general election but continues to face persistent competition from Bernie Sanders. Clinton’s team is attempting to tamp down expectations for tonight, stressing that the race remains close in the Midwest, despite public polling showing her with a sizable lead. Still, she urged Democrats to unify behind her bid so they can begin focusing on Trump. “We have … to be able to start talking about not only unifying the Democratic party but unifying our country,” she said during a stop in Chicago. MIAMI Across Florida, longtime supporters of Marco Rubio are coming to grips with the possibility that the senator is probably on the verge of a humiliating defeat in the state’s GOP primary today. Their young, telegenic favorite son who began as a city commissioner and was touted as “The Republican Savior” continues to trail front-runner Donald Trump in polls. Campaigning statewide over the weekend, Rubio looked exhausted. He nearly lost his composure talking to reporters about violence at recent Trump rallies. He rushed through crowds at restaurants and retail shops, shaking hands, kissing elderly women, tilting his head and furrowing his brow to convey his appreciation. A funereal mood set in, similar to what cloaked the campaign of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in its waning days. At Tiffany’s Family Restaurant in Palm Harbor, Rubio breezed through in 20 minutes amid customers dining on chocolate chip pancakes. A group of elderly women quickly texted their “selfies” with the senator to family members. “You’re a young man with a bright future,” an older man whispered to Rubio. “There’s always tomorrow.” But Rubio interjected: “We got to get it this time, because America needs it now.” ED O’KEEFE

POLITICS The tumultuous presidential primary season has reached a potentially decisive day for both Republicans and Democrats, with enough delegates up for grabs to turn Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton from frontrunners to likely nominees. Today’s biggest prizes are Florida and Ohio, states with a long history of making or breaking White House aspirations. Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio are hoping their home soil gives them a boost that would keep Trump from pulling away in the GOP race. The contests come as animosity toward Trump has risen to the point where he can rarely get through an event without being interrupted by protesters. The front-runner is also under scrutiny for appearing to encourage his supporters to physically confront those protesters, deepening divisions within the Republican Party. Still, Trump holds a comfortable lead in the GOP delegate count and could put himself well on his way to the nomination if he sweeps today’s contests. During a campaign stop Monday in Tampa, Trump was already eying the general election. “If we win Florida and we win Ohio, we can go and attack Hillary,” he said. Heading into today, Trump is locked in a tight contest in Ohio with Kasich, who spent Monday campaigning alongside 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

John Kasich, left, and Marco Rubio greet supporters Monday in their home states of Ohio and Florida, respectively.

“This is the guy Ohio has to vote for, and America’s counting on you,” Romney told the crowd at a Kasich event in North Canton. While Romney has not endorsed Kasich, he’s said he’ll do whatever is needed to help all of Trump’s rivals. Rubio also hopes to block Trump in a do-or-die primary in his home state, though polling suggests he’s slipping. The senator tried to stay upbeat Monday, perhaps his final full day of campaigning in the 2016 race. “Tomorrow’s the day where we are going to shock the country,” Rubio said in Jacksonville. If Trump sweeps today’s contests, he still would have to keep winning in order to clinch the nomination. But he would cross an important threshold by collecting more than 50 percent of the delegates awarded so far. Trump’s closest competition has come from Texas Sen. Ted

DOJ decries unlawful fees Local courts are warned to avoid issuing fines that unfairly hit the poor CIVIL RIGHTS The Justice Department is asking local courts across the country to be wary of how they slap poor defendants with fines and fees to fill their jurisdictions’ coffers, warning that such practices often run afoul of the U.S. Constitution. In a letter sent Monday to chief judges and court administrators in every state, Vanita Gupta, the head of the department’s Civil

Rights Division, and Lisa Foster, director of the Office for Access to Justice, wrote that illegal enforcement of fines and fees had been receiving increased attention, and the Justice Department has a “strong interest” in making sure citizens’ rights are protected. “In addition to being unlawful, to the extent that these practices are geared not toward addressing public safety, but ... toward raising revenue, they can … erode trust between local governments and their constituents,” the letter said. out your bracket. It’s OK to look for an upset on the first weekend. No. 12 Yale over No. 5 Baylor screams “pick me.” Some modest surprises like No. 10 VCU over No. 7 Oregon State and No. 11 Gonzaga over No. 6 Seton Hall are worth trying. But you have to keep picking the powerhouses. And by the way, No. 1 Oregon isn’t one of the big boys. They’ll be dead Ducks after facing No. 4 Duke in the Sweet 16. No. 1 Virginia isn’t a juggernaut either, although the Cavaliers are better than Oregon. Virginia will lose to Michigan State for a third straight season. Why take Michigan State to win it all? Tom Izzo is the best tournament coach for the money. While the Spartans haven’t won the national title since 2000, they’ve since reached one final, five Final Fours and 10 Sweet 16s. The light came on for Michigan State when it beat Maryland 74-65 on Jan. 23 to end a three-game losing streak. Since then, the Spartans have

Forget talk of a wide-open NCAA Tournament with a dozen teams, including Maryland and Virginia, having a chance to win the title. It’s all background noise. The sport’s royalty, not Cinderellas, will again fill the Final Four. Kansas, Michigan State, North Carolina — with 10 combined national crowns — plus a strong Oklahoma will win their regions. Then, Michigan State will beat Kansas for the championship. It’s that simple. What about the George Masons of today? After all, it’s the 10-year anniversary of the Patriots’ shocking Final Four run. But long shots don’t win the men’s basketball championship. Maryland was the last outsider to take the crown, in 2002, and the Terrapins were still longtime contenders. Arkansas won in 1994 after several good seasons. But mostly, remember the bluebloods when you fill

gone 12-1 and enter the tournament on a nine-game winning streak. Izzo has ramped up his team like he always does. After an easy opening weekend, Michigan State will probably have to beat Virginia and North Carolina before facing Kansas in the final. The Jayhawks have the toughest region. In the South, they could have to play Maryland and Villanova before a Final Four meeting against Oklahoma. Maryland will be Kansas’ biggest hurdle, but the Jayhawks’ defense will put away the Terps. Meanwhile, Villanova peaked a month ago.

A Kansas-Michigan State title game would offer two great programs, two legendary coaches and one inviting game to watch. For all everyone talks about smaller schools like Butler winning the title, the championship game doesn’t feel legitimate unless a big-name program wins. It’s sad but true. Don’t be afraid of picking a First Four team to advance. As a No. 11 seed in 2014, Tennessee won three games in five days to reach the Sweet 16.

2 No. 10 Temple If the Owls get by Iowa, which lost five of its past six games, they will likely get a second chance to beat their Philadelphia rival Villanova in the second round.

1 No. 10 Syracuse Maybe they didn’t deserve an at-large berth, but the Orange are in the field and their 2-3 zone won’t be fun for teams to face. Michael Gbinije averaged 24 points in Syracuse’s past four games.

Oklahoma and Villanova were No. 1 for three weeks each and North Carolina and Kentucky were there for two. Steelers WR Bryant accepts one-year ban

Nationals retiring syrup celebration

Steelers wide receiver Martavis Bryant, 24, will not appeal his oneyear suspension from the NFL and will begin serving it immediately, the NFL announced Monday. Bryant, who was suspended for multiple new violations of the substance-abuse policy after a previous suspension, will be suspended for a calendar year. He will be eligible to apply for reinstatement by Commissioner Roger Goodell no sooner than 60 days before the one-year anniversary of the suspension. Over the weekend, Bryant’s agent said the receiver would seek treatment for depression. (TWP)

Max Scherzer, the brains behind the Nationals’ postgame chocolate syrup celebrations last season, said the Hershey’s has been put away for good. “That was last year,” he said in an interview on MLB Network Radio. “That was just a one-year thing. It was kind of a spur of the moment how it even came about. We’ll look for a new way try to have some more fun this year, in ’16.” Bryce Harper, who was the recipient of one of Scherzer’s chocolate syrup showers, said he would leave it to Scherzer to come up with a new idea for this season. “I think Max will do a great job on picking that,” Harper said. “He did a great job picking that last year … and I’m sure we’ll flash some ideas out there.” SCOTT ALLEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Slumping Ovechkin says injury still bothers him Caps star looks to snap 5-game scoreless skid tonight against Carolina CAPITALS Despite a 17-point lead atop the Eastern Conference on Monday, Capitals coach Barry Trotz acknowledged that he is concerned about his club. The worries range from the Capitals’ starts — they’ve allowed the first goal in 13 of their past 15 games — to the play of Alex Ovechkin, who has just one goal in his past eight games. “Our game has slipped in some areas,” said Trotz, whose team is 2-2-1 in its last five games. “There’s no question.” Ovechkin will try to snap a season-worst five-game scoreless

drought when Washington hosts Carolina tonight (7, CSN). He suggested Monday that he and his teammates may have worn down after playing seven games in 11 days, including a stretch of four in five days. “With the schedule that we have, five days, four games, I think we just mentally go downhill,” said Ovechkin, who still leads the NHL with 41 goals this season. Ovechkin also said that the lower-body injury that caused him to miss the All-Star Game remains a problem a month before the Stanley Cup playoffs. “It still bothers me, but of course when we have that kind of schedule, it lets you know right away that it bothers you, that it’s sore,” he said. He and Nicklas Backstrom

could have a new linemate tonight as they were joined by Jay Beagle on the top trio at practice Monday. The move was part of wholesale changes Trotz made to all four of his lines. “Obviously the last five, six games, we don’t like our record, we don’t like losing two in a row, so when a change happens it’s usually Coach trying to spark something,” Beagle said. Trotz said Beagle was among Washington’s best players in Saturday’s 5-2 loss in San Jose. “It forces the line to go north,” he said of the decision to promote Beagle. “We’ve had good production when we put him up there. He goes and gets pucks; he drives the guys around him. He’s an engine — he pushes people forward.” BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS)

STUDIES SHOW …

URBAN ADVENTURES COS.

Stress can help you bond

A rendering of SweatBox, a compact fitness studio coming from the founder of Vida Fitness.

Next up: Gym in a box Founder of Vida Fitness is thinking small to compete with CrossFit, cycling studios FITNESS TRENDS David von Storch has spent a decade building Vida Fitness into a chain of gyms known for its one-size-fits-all approach. In addition to infinity pools and hundreds of machines, Vida locations are often outfitted with spas, juice bars and hair salons. But for his next venture, von Storch is thinking small. The aptly-named SweatBox, scheduled to open by April, is his answer to the scores of CrossFit sites and cycling studios cropping up around town. Each 50-minute workout will incorporate cardio, strength training and a playlist of booming music. At 1,725 square feet, the facility — a $750,000 project to be housed inside the company’s U Street complex — is compact. (The adjacent Vida, for comparison’s sake, is 60,000 square feet.) SweatBox will have 23 stations, each equipped with a stationary bicycle, yoga mat and straps for suspension training. The hope, von Storch says, is to attract Vida members and

non-members alike. Each session will cost $39 and is billed separately from Vida for members. The price is on the higher end of the spectrum for boutique fitness programs, which range from $19 for a hot yoga class at Pure Om in Bethesda to $37 for a 55-minute reformer session at Fuse Pilates in Washington. Other popular programs come with similar price tags: Trident CrossFit in Alexandria ($25 for a drop-in class) and Soul Cycle ($30 for 45 minutes). “People are looking for different ways to stay in shape,” von Storch, 57, says. People are also interested in tracking their performance and comparing it to others’, he says. Fitness-tracking devices like Fitbit and Jawbone have turned everyday exercisers into zealous competitors. At SweatBox, participants will wear heart-rate monitors that track their performance during each session. At the end of class, their results will be sent to their smartphones and displayed on big-screen TVs outside the studio, where they can see how they

“People want to know how they did relative to last time, and how they performed versus their peers.” DAVID VON STORCH, Vida Fitness founder, on what gym-goers want to see in a specialized workout

stack up next to their classmates. “In terms of just getting people to walk out of the studio sweaty and saying, ‘Now that was a great work-out’ — well, that’s not enough anymore,” von Storch says. Camaraderie is among the reasons behind the rapid growth of boutique gyms, says Walter R. Thompson, a professor of kinesiology and health at Georgia State University. After all, you’re more likely to go to the gym if you’ve gotten to know a classmate or trainer than if you’ll be running solo on the treadmill. Smaller outfits “are more likely

to call you up and say, ‘Hey, we missed you today. Will we see you tomorrow?’” Thompson says. “It’s a more personal approach.” But, he adds, the rise of boutiques has just as much to do with the economy. In the early 2000s, specialty gyms were rapidly expanding. When the recession hit, Americans tightened their belts and small gyms were the first to shutter. As the economy has climbed back, so has the appetite for smaller, personalized programs, Thompson says. As a result, a number of traditional fitness chains, from Gold’s Gym to Washington Sports Club, have added more high-intensity group classes in recent years to compete with boutique studios. These fads are nothing new. As with workouts of the past, Thompson says the appeal of these programs is sure to fade with time. It’s a dynamic von Storch understands well. “There is a lifecycle to this boutique fitness concept,” he says. “It’s going to change one day.”

A new study in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology suggests some stress can encourage bonding. Lead researcher Elizabeth Kirby, a postdoc at Stanford, exposed male rats to mild stress — by immobilizing them in a tube for a few hours — then put them back in a cage. The change was dramatic. The rats were less aggressive, hung out closer and shared their water more. Next, rats were exposed to stress that was more lifethreatening — the odor of a predator. The rats did not bond and began to stay away from each other. Kirby said the rats’ response to mild stress is akin to how strong friendships are formed the first year of college. “Stress is not universally bad,” Kirby explained. “It can also be beneficial to psychological health.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Every step I take, he’s watching me Q. A guy at work stares at me. He holds eye contact all the time, and he works near enough to me that if he is moving around his cube and I happen to look at him, I see him looking at me. He has never said anything inappropriate, and we usually have OK, if stilted, conversations. This does not feel like a reportable offense, but it’s making me very uncomfortable. STOP STARING AT ME! It’s hard to make the case that he’s doing anything wrong by maintaining intense eye contact with (presumably) just your face while you are actively engaged in conversation together. But when he is looking at you outside of an interaction, that’s easier to quantify as inappropriate. He deserves a discussion first: “I find I work best when

I have a little more space. I notice you looking my way a lot; can I ask you to be mindful of that?” Rearranging your cube and using a plant to block his easy, immediate view may help. If nothing changes, get some guidance from HR. His only offense may be being awkward or having no self-awareness, but it is nonetheless affecting you, and they can help.

The Baby Industrial Complex (“Buy this changing table or your child will get rickets and be refused admittance to Princeton!”) takes as its victims a lot of otherwise rational people. Can you get him to have an honest conversation about what he’s afraid of? Germs? Being looked down on? Feeling guilty for not giving his child “everything?” Is there something in his history — with money, with parents, with childhood social status — that is coming home to roost? That blissful country feeling Maren Morris dazzles with pop-inflected yet soulful country music

ALBUMS

Country singer Maren Morris will release her first major-label album, “Hero,” on June 3.

thematically. Although “Hero” boasts songs about relationships, there’s a range of topics. “I love love songs, but sometimes it’s okay to just be young and talk about something other than getting married or falling in love,” Morris said. “There are so many fun things that you live that you can write about.” Such as “Drunk Girls Don’t Cry,” for a friend who dates losers; or “80’s Mercedes,” a soaring anthem about hitting the town. Although Morris is barely old enough to rent the cars she sings about, she’s in her second decade as a performer. Raised in Arlington, Tex., she hit the state music circuit after her parents bought her a guitar when she was

a tween. In between high school and college classes, she recorded three albums by the time she was 21, later moving to Nashville in 2013. Even when she took a break from performing she stayed busy, writing songs for Tim McGraw and Kelly Clarkson. On a writing trip to Los Angeles in early 2015, Morris, stinging after a bad breakup, took a drive to see the ocean. A sense of peace washed over her as she listened to music in her car. She thought, “This is my version of church.” The next day, she had a scheduled co-write with producer Mike Busbee, who has written songs for Garth Brooks, Shakira and 5 Seconds of Summer, among others. She told him she had a title for

a song: “My Church.” He threw out an idea: “Can I get a Hallelujah/ Can I get an Amen?” The line ended up as the chorus, and they wrote the song in an hour. By the time Sony signed Morris in September, her songs had already been uploaded to Spotify and had about 2 million streams. Busbee, who is co-producing Morris’ album, is gratified but not surprised by the reaction. “To have a voice like that; to have that presence, the way she carries herself and the way she writes songs. … Put that all together, you can’t stop wanting to engage with that as a listener,” he said. “Of course people are freaking out.” EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The story follows the adventures and misfortunes of three orphaned siblings in custody of their evil uncle, Count Olaf — played by Harris — after their parents’ deaths. The actor, who hosted the Academy Awards in 2015, earned four Emmy nominations for his role in the long-running CBS comedy series “How I Met Your Mother.” (EXPRESS) Radiohead announces first U.S. concerts in four years

Rapper Kendrick Lamar’s new album — “untitled unmastered.” — debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, Billboard revealed Sunday. The surprise release of the album on streaming services March 4 was followed by the March 11 release of the explicit version on CD, with an edited version expected out March 18. The new album is Lamar’s second charttopper in the past year, after his Grammy Award-winning “To Pimp A Butterfly.” He is the third musician to score two No. 1s in less than 12 months, after Drake and Future. MUSIC When a new act makes a successful splash in country music, it typically arrives with an obvious talking point: Kacey Musgraves’ truth bombs about small-town suffocation; Sam Hunt’s brash infusion of R&B; Chris Stapleton’s traditionalism. Maren Morris, 25, has accomplished a rare feat: making waves without an easily grasped message. She writes songs about experiences that are difficult to explain, like the fleeting surge of confidence you have before leaving the house for a big night. Or the blissful, near-spiritual feeling of driving while your favorite music blasts out of the speakers. Her ability to capture the latter resulted in a hit first single, the soulful “My Church.” The song has done so well in only a few months that Sony’s Columbia Nashville — which signed Morris last fall after a bidding war — announced plans Monday to release her first major-label album, “Hero,” on June 3. It’s a significant benchmark in a male-dominated genre that has recently seen women struggle to gain a foothold. “Obviously, there’s this lack of a female perspective that I would like to hear,” Morris said. But she’s simply excited to offer a different perspective, not only in terms of gender, but als also

BARRY PETCHESKY, at deadspin.com, shows gratitude for the early release of a full bracket on Twitter midway through the tournament selection show Sunday. Petchesky bemoaned how slowly the bracket is unveiled on the CBS show, which expanded to two hours this year. CBS and the NCAA are investigating the source of the leak.

BJARKE INGELS GROUP

“Whoever Leaked The NCAA Tournament Bracket, Thank You.”

“No. Just no. No, no, no, no. The stadium looks like jellyfish barf.” @BURGUNDYBURNER reacts to renderings of a proposed Redskins

stadium unveiled Sunday on “60 Minutes.” Redskins owner Daniel Snyder hired Danish architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group to design the hyperbolic paraboloid-shaped stadium, which is surrounded by a moat for kayakers — an idea that some fans found laughable. The renderings also show people scaling the side of the stadium and sunbathing on a beach. Construction of a new Redskins stadium is a long way off, although officials in D.C., Maryland and Virginia have all shown interest in helping Snyder build the venue.

MELISSA LOCKER, at time.com, reacts to a two-story mural in an alley in Melbourne, Australia, that recreates Kim Kardashian’s recent nude selfie on Instagram. A street artist known as Lushsux is taking credit for the painting, which includes black censor bars to keep it PG-13.

“My number one most-anticipated new comic series. It’s not even close.” CHATEAUARUSI, a commenter at themarysue.com, is excited to see a preview of the first three pages of Marvel’s new “Black Panther” comic book. Written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and illustrated by Brian Stelfreeze, the comic goes on sale April 6.

MEDIUM

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’ll have much to choose from, but your instincts are telling you that it’s perhaps best to stick to the simplest option. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Though you may be something of a “neat freak,” you’re more than willing to let things get messy if it means getting what you want. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Someone new in your life opines freely, and something you hear him or her say is likely to hit you in an unusual, perhaps permanent way. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may come close to crossing a line, and no one is going to warn you of the danger until it’s nearly too late. CANCER (June 21-July 22) A culture clash is likely to erupt when you and a loved one begin to think about where things are going.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re going to want to work in a careful and highly detailed way all day. You can’t afford to skip a step! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) While waiting your turn, you’ll be able to do something that has been on your list for quite some time. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’ll have the chance to do something right for yourself, but it’s likely to take a little more time than usual and may cost a bit extra.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

61 | 48 TODAY: Some drizzle could linger through the commute and, if we’re unlucky, midday. But by afternoon, we should be drying out and the sun may well show itself. High temperatures will depend heavily on how much sun we see, but at least 60 is a good bet. Partly cloudy and mild as light winds start to come in tonight.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’re

usually more than willing to follow where a certain someone leads you, but you may have a good reason to decline an invitation. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’re betting that things will transpire a certain way, but your confidence may be shaken by an unexpected arrival.
