The Vienna Metro Station looks desolate during Metro’s unprecedented shutdown.

Tales from Metro’s shutdown With the entire Metrorail system shut down on Wednesday, many area residents had their own unique experiences with the rare event. Here are some stories of how people around the region dealt with the transportation nightmare. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

No surge for one driver

Biking, but no parking

Tim Sheetz figured with Metro service shut down Wednesday, there might be more than a few folks looking for a way to get to work. So the Mount Rainer resident offered up rides — first to his co-workers at an events planning company in Northern Virginia and then to his neighbors. “With Metro rail being closed tomorrow, I am offering a ride share option to any fellow residents,” he wrote in a post on the Mount Rainer Facebook page Tuesday. “I just thought it was the right thing to do,” he said.

Swathi Siris was stranded. She had no idea that Metro was completely shut down and was taken by surprise when she showed up at the Vienna Metro station. She stopped a Metro worker for an explanation. “What’s happened?” she asked. Siris, who usually takes the Orange Line from Vienna to New Carrollton, did what a lot of folks might do in her situation: she panicked. “I thought only one single lane was going to be closed so I figured it would be running less frequently, but I didn’t think it was totally shut down,” she said.

Taxi driver Yalemsew Zegeye, 28, of Hyattsville, Md., thought the Metro shutdown might make for good business. It was not. He netted only a handful of customers during the morning commute. He said he started at the Fort Totten Metro station, but the cab line there barely moved, so he headed downtown. Zilch. “So far, it’s not that much different” from a normal day, he said, as he drove through Cleveland Park and Woodley Park areas on Wednesday. “Probably I didn’t get the right location or something.”

People riding Capital Bikeshare into downtown had trouble finding a spot to dock their bikes. Derek Macabee, 26, took advantage of the Bikeshare program’s 24-hour free membership promotion while Metro was down, and pedaled in from Bethesda. He liked his first bike commute, but when he arrived to drop of his bike after 9 a.m. at a station on 15th and L streets NW, all the spots were full. Within a five minute span, a half dozen other people unsuccessfully attempted to dock there bikes there as well.

‘Metromageddon’ After shutting down for a day, has Metro’s once-vaunted system hit rock bottom?

Uber says shutdown led to record day

administrative assistant. “It just feels to me like the system is crumbling,” she said. If there is a silver lining in the shutdown of the system, it was an opportunity to highlight the region’s burgeoning array of transportation options, from the Capital Bikeshare program to ride-hailing companies. And Metro’s general manager, Paul Wiedefeld, won praise from some commuters by showing himself to be decisive and willing to take the heat for a massive, sudden disruption. “I feel like this could be the first step of the many it will take to fix things,” said Dorrie Popovski on her packed bus commute to Metro Center. “They’ve never really done anything this abrupt before.” MARC FISHER AND STEVE HENDRIX

TRANSPORTATION The Metro shutdown had riders flocking to Uber in droves, the company says. Uber says the number of people signing up for the app in the run-up to the morning commute was 70 percent higher than on the same day last week. And compared to last week, three times as many people took their first trip during commuting hours — meaning they were likely using the app to fill Metro’s void. Uber expanded the range of its popular uberPool service to the entire metropolitan area for Metro’s shutdown. During Monday’s bungled Metro commute, caused by a cable fire near McPherson Square, the company says nearly 20 percent of its uberPool rides were taken by users new to the ride-splitting option. Wednesday, the company says, one in four of its trips were on the pool. Uber says the number of pool trips overall represents a record since the ride-splitting option’s October launch in D.C., a likely product of the expanded coverage area. It also says a record number of its drivers were on the road — 50 percent more than the same time last Wednesday. Lyft, meanwhile, says the proportion of rides taken on its ride-splitting service, Lyft Line, was 65 percent more than last Wednesday. And the number of drivers on the road was 50 percent higher, it says.

TRANSPORTATION It wasn’t that long ago that Metro was the pride of the capital region, a sleek, swift and safe symbol of what government could achieve when politicians worked across state boundaries and party lines. From its opening in 1976 through its first quarter century, the D.C. area’s rail system was a powerful engine of development, a tourist attraction in its own right, often credited with playing a decisive role in turning the region into an economic powerhouse with the infrastructure of a Northeastern metropolis and the growth rate of a Sunbelt upstart. But Wednesday’s no-snow snow day — a total shutdown of more than 100 miles of rail service for hundreds of thousands of passengers — served as a dramatic, painful reminder that Metro has not aged well, that it was saddled from the start with a cumbersome governance structure and an anemic revenue model, and that government dysfunction and political paralysis have real-world impacts on real lives. “I think something’s really wrong,” said Donte Tate, a high school English teacher from Hyattsville, Md. Without his usual Green Line train to work, Tate took an Uber car to Takoma station, where a colleague picked him up. “I don’t think they would have shut down the whole thing if there weren’t a real safety problem. I’m getting scared to ride Metro.” Washingtonians are accustomed enough to transit shutdowns — until now only for extreme weather — that they adapted relatively easily to what was announced as a one-day shutdown. Roads were packed, but many people stayed home to

telework — or at least pretend to telework, which might explain the unusually crowded coffee shops, parks and shops on a warm, sunny weekday. What made the day unique was not so much an instant hardening of the traffic arteries as a collective acknowledgement that Metro’s once-vaunted efficiency and affordability have yielded to chronic service problems, soaring fares and a nagging inability to make things right. Some commuters were pleased to see a new general manager bite the bullet and take unpopular, disruptive action to address a safety issue that has caused fires and service interruptions, including an electrical fire on Monday near McPherson Square. “Something needs to be done,” said Nicole Eubanks, 40, an

Updates Washington’s Metro system was expected to resume rail service at 5 a.m. today after an emergency one-day shutdown that caused chaos throughout the region. Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld said that as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, crews had completed inspections of 80 percent of the 600 “jumper cables” identical to the one that caught fire Monday and crippled service on three rail lines. Crews inspected 22 zones, identified 26 areas with defects and completed repairs to 18 of those. It was hoped that the rest of the inspections could be completed overnight. If that was not possible, or if other problems were found, today’s opening might include single-tracking or other service modifications, Wiedefeld said. (TWP)

Slain officer was mistaken as threat PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY The plainclothes Maryland police officer who died in a chaotic shootout at a Maryland police station was deliberately shot by a fellow officer who did not recognize him and viewed him as an armed threat, a police chief said Wednesday. Speaking to reporters outside the Prince George’s County courthouse, Police Chief Hank Stawinski was careful not to speculate about the state of mind of the unidentified officer who fired upon Officer Jacai Colson on Sunday outside a police station in Landover, but he said it was clear that the officer feared for his life. “I don’t believe for a second that our officer intentionally fired at another police officer,” Stawinski said. Three brothers who live near the suburban Washington police station have been charged in the gunfight, which police have described as an attempt by the suicidal oldest brother, 22-year-old Michael Ford, to provoke officers into killing him. According to police, Ford was driven to the station by his two younger brothers and began firing at the building and at passing vehicles, causing

Republican and Democratic primaries on Tuesday in Florida, North Carolina, Ohio, Illinois and Missouri did some shaking up among the potential nominees. Tuesday night was a good night for Donald Trump. He won at least three states and sent one rival, Fla. Sen. Marco Rubio, to the sidelines. Fresh off of that momentum, Trump offered himself Wednesday as the inevitable Republican presidential nominee and called on balky GOP leaders to embrace the voters’ “tremendous fervor” for his candidacy. If GOP leaders try to deny him the nomination at a contested convention when he is leading the delegate count, “you’d have riots,” he warned on CNN. Trump emphasized that he expects to secure the 1,237 delegates needed to win the nomination ahead of the Republican National Convention in July.

With no big wins coming out of Tuesday night, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz tried to capitalize off of Rubio suspending his presidential campaign after a landslide loss to Trump in his home state. At a Houston rally Tuesday night, Cruz said that he welcomes Rubio’s former supporters “with open arms,” and that the battle for the Republican presidential nomination battle is a “two-person race” between himself and Trump. Cruz has won seven states but still significantly trails Trump in delegates. South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, who endorsed Rubio, said Wednesday that her “prayer” is that Cruz will be the eventual Republican nominee.

Still vibrating from his home state primary win in Ohio, Gov. John Kasich told crowds in Philadelphia after a town hall with students at Villanova University on Wednesday that the Trump and Cruz would lose a national election. “Neither of those guys can win a general election,” Kasich said. “It’s unlikely that anybody is going to achieve enough delegates to avoid a convention … and you talk to people in Pennsylvania, they’ll tell you, I can win a general election.” Kasich won all 66 delegates on Tuesday night in the key winner-take-all state of Ohio, his first state win, with Trump coming in second.

HIllary Clinton 1,139 pledged delegates

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had an even better night than Trump on Tuesday. Racking up wins in at least four states, Clinton was able to bounce back after her surprising defeat against Sen. Bernie Sanders last week in Michigan. She solidified her hold on the Democratic nomination, allowing her to begin the work of unifying her party against GOP front-runner Donald Trump. She began peppering her standard speech with calls for party unity and more direct attacks on Trump. And on Tuesday evening, she released her first Spanishlanguage ad in Arizona, focusing not on Sanders, but on Trump.

Bernie Sanders 825 pledged delegates

Sanders, who fell further behind Clinton in Tuesday’s primaries, told supporters Wednesday that he has “an extremely good chance to win nearly every state that votes in the next month.” In a fundraising solicitation, Sanders wrote that Clinton had reached her “high-water mark” in the campaign. “Starting today, the map now shifts dramatically in our favor,” he said, echoing the case his aides have made that he is well-positioned to win contests in Arizona, Idaho and Utah. But because the Democratic calendar does not feature winner-takealls, it means that Sanders can’t simply win a state to catch up to Clinton. He needs to win big states big.

Donald Trump hasn’t proclaimed himself the “presumptive” Republican presidential nominee, but his decision to torpedo the Fox News Channel debate that had been scheduled for Monday in Salt Lake City suggests that he is supremely confident of his eventual victory. He said Wednesday morning that he would skip the debate to give a speech, and that prompted GOP opponent John Kasich to pull out, too. With only Ted Cruz left, Fox cancelled the event. Trump, who has complained publicly that there have been too many debates — Monday’s would have been the 13th for the Republicans — might have been hoping for a while to avoid them. On Feb. 28, before the first “Super Tuesday,” conservative commentator Bill Kristol tweeted that “people close to Trump” said he hoped to declare the race over as soon as March 1 and skip further debates. That was a thinly sourced report, and Trump couldn’t decline to debate at that point, but it made a lot of sense. He boasts about “winning” every debate, but the truth is he’s not at his best in these rhetorical clashes. He’s not awful, but he’s much better on the stump, where there are no moderators or opponents to challenge him. And debates are unpredictable — the kind of thing that a frontrunner gobbling up delegates doesn’t need. CALLUM BORCHERS

SEOUL The University of Virginia student being held in North Korea was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison with hard labor for trying to steal a propaganda sign from a hotel in Pyongyang. Otto Warmbier, a 21-year-old student from Cincinnati who had gone to North Korea with a tour group, was convicted after a one-hour trial in the Supreme Court. The court held that he had committed a crime “pursuant to the U.S. government’s hostile policy toward [the North], in a bid to impair the unity of its people after entering it as a tourist.” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said Wednesday that the administration is urging the North Korean government to pardon Warmbier, grant him special amnesty, and release him. “The allegations for which this individual was arrested and imprisoned would not give rise to arrest or imprisonment in the United States, or just about any country in the world,” Earnest said. “It is increasingly clear the North Korean government seeks to use these U.S. citizens as pawns for a political agenda.” U.S. State Department Deputy

Treasury chief is seeking leaner budgets and bodies

Voters ousted Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez on Tuesday, backing Democratic primary challenger Kim Foxx in a campaign dominated by questions about Alvarez’s handling of the shooting death of black teenager Laquan McDonald by a white Chicago police officer in 2014. McDonald was shot 16 times in an incident captured on squad-car video. Alvarez charged the officer with murder, but not until after a judge ordered city officials to release the tape publicly. (AP)

More than a dozen U.S. military personnel have been disciplined — but face no criminal charges — for mistakes that led to the bombing of a Doctors Without Borders hospital that killed 42 people in Afghanistan in October, U.S. defense officials say. The punishments, which have not been publicly announced, are largely administrative. But in some cases the actions, such as letters of reprimand, are tough enough to effectively end chances for further promotion. (AP)

Britain’s Treasury chief unveiled a budget Wednesday that included billions in cuts and an eye-catching levy on sugary drinks. George Osborne said that under his plan, Britain acts “now so we don’t pay later.” He offered $4.9 billion in cuts by 2020 to balance the books in the face of weaker global growth. He announced changes in the school system and pledged a tax of 18-24 pence (about 26-34 cents) per liter on sugar-laden sodas, according to the BBC, to cut youth obesity. (AP)

Ohio gets 2nd try to execute killer Court OKs new attempt after a lethal injection was botched in 2009 COLUMBUS, OHIO The state can try again to put to death a condemned killer whose 2009 botched execution was called off after two hours, the Ohio Supreme Court said Wednesday. The court by a 4-3 vote rejected arguments by death row inmate Romell Broom, whose attorneys said giving the state a second chance would amount to cruel and unusual punishment and double jeopardy. Prosecutors argued that double jeopardy doesn’t apply because lethal drugs never entered Broom’s veins while executioners unsuccessfully tried to hook up an IV. They also said an unsuccessful execution attempt doesn’t affect the constitutionality of his death sentence. The majority opinion said it was unclear why Broom’s veins couldn’t be accessed, a fact that brings the rejection of his appeal into question, Justice Judi French wrote in a dissent. “If the state cannot explain why the Broom execution went wrong, then the state cannot guarantee that the outcome will be different next time,” she said.

A court battle begins Obama nominates ‘exemplary’ judge to replace Scalia, challenging the GOP

WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX

EVAN VUCCI (AP)

SUPREME COURT President Barack Obama nominated appeals court judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court on Wednesday, thrusting a moderate jurist and former prosecutor into the center of an election-year clash over the future of the nation’s highest court. Obama cast the 63-year-old Garland as “a serious man and an exemplary judge” deserving of a full hearing and a Senate confirmation vote, despite Republican vows to deny him both. Standing in the White House Rose Garden with Garland, Obama argued that the integrity of the court was at stake and appealed to the Senate to “play it straight” in filling the seat left vacant by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. “It’s supposed to be above politics,” Obama said. “It has to be. And it should stay that way.” Republican leaders, however, held to their refusal to consider any nominee, saying the seat should be filled by the next president after this year’s election. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell spoke with Garland by phone but did not change his position that “the American people will have a voice.” He said he would not be holding “a perfunctory meeting but he wished Judge Garland well,” a spokesman said. Others in the GOP ranks were less wedded to the no-hearing, novote, not-even-a-meeting stance — a sign that Republicans are aware the strategy could leave them branded as obstructionist. Unlike McConnell, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley said he is open to meeting with Garland in the

The judge will begin visiting with Democratic senators today at the Capitol before the Senate breaks for a two-week recess. Scheduling courtesy meetings is a long way from securing a hearing, much less winning the 60 votes needed for confirmation. Still, the White House seized the comments as evidence Garland’s resume and bipartisan credentials put pressure on Republicans. Garland, 63, is the chief judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, a court whose influence over federal policy and national security matters has made it a proving ground for potential justices. ‘Biden rule’ THE DEFINITION: A reference to Vice

President Joe Biden arguing in 1992 (as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee) that the Senate should not fill a Supreme Court vacancy in the final year of a president’s term. THE BACK STORY: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., cited what he called “the Biden rule” Wednesday in reiterating his opposition to considering a Supreme Court nominee this year.

reputation overseeing the investigation and prosecutions in the Oklahoma City bombing case in 1995, as well as the case against Unabomber Ted Kaczynski. When confirmed to the D.C. Circuit in 1997, Garland won backing from a majority in both parties, including seven current Republicans senators. As a replacement for Scalia, Garland would undoubtedly shift

the court from its conservative tilt. He would be expected to align with the more liberal members on environmental regulation, labor disputes and campaign finance. The D.C. Circuit isn’t a hotbed for cases on social issues, leaving few solid indicators of Garland’s views on abortion rights or the death penalty. Progressives and civil rights activists pushed the president to name an African-American woman or to otherwise expand the court’s diversity. Obama passed over appeals court Judge Sri Srinivasan, who would have been the first Asian-American justice, and Judge Paul Watford, who would have been the second African-American. Garland — a white male — breaks no barriers. He would be the oldest Supreme Court nominee since Lewis Powell, who was 64 when he was confirmed in 1971. In emotional remarks in the Rose Garden, he choked back tears, calling the nomination “the greatest honor of my life.” KATHLEEN HENNESSEY (AP)

For Merrick Garland to join the Supreme Court before the fall elections, at least 14 Senate Republicans must join forces with Senate Democrats to get him confirmed. That is very unlikely, but a few Republicans might cross the line Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has drawn. AMBER PHILLIPS Vulnerable incumbents Senators such as Illinois’ Mark Kirk, Ohio’s Rob Portman and New Hampshire’s Kelly Ayotte probably need independent voters to be re-elected, and independent voters seem to favor Senate action to fill the court vacancy this year.

Centrists Senate veterans with little at stake politically might argue that it’s the chamber’s duty to give Garland timely consideration. This group could include Maine’s Susan Collins, who said Wednesday she would meet with him, and Alaska’s Lisa Murkowski.

Junior senators Some newer senators might disagree with their leaders’ strategy. North Carolina’s Thom Tillis, in office less than 15 months, has said the party risks being labeled “obstructionists” by refusing to consider a nominee, especially a centrist one.

THREE POINTERS

A kid-free clubhouse?

Can Big East rebuild its reputation? NCAA TOURNAMENT The Big East’s dearth of NCAA Tournament success in the two years since its makeover can be viewed as an indicator of a diminished conference or simple randomness. Until it changes, though, the conference’s postseason washout cannot be ignored. “You have to own it,” Butler coach Chris Holtmann said. “We understand that now’s the time to continue to perform well.” Just as the Big East has solidified its status with strong regular seasons, it has undermined its reputation with dismal showings in the NCAA Tournament. The new version of the Big East has garnered respect from the tournament selection committee, earning six bids last season and another five this year, precisely half the conference. Villanova, Xavier, Seton Hall,

Butler and Providence will attempt to reverse the Big East’s inability to send any teams on deep tournament runs. “We’re in this position because we had great nonconference wins,” Holtmann said. “What we do from here is certainly going to be talked about, and it’s important. I’m excited to see what our league is capable of.” Of the 10 Big East teams to reach the tournament the past two years, only one — Xavier, which lost to Arizona in the Sweet 16 last season — advanced to the second weekend. Five were upset by opponents with worse seeds. Four lost their first game. Overall, the Big East has gone 7-10 in the NCAA Tournament since the overhaul. The primary culprit has been Villanova, which has romped through three consecutive seasons and earned a 2 seed, a 1 seed and another 2 seed this year. The Wildcats, who made the Final Four under Jay Wright in 2009, have been branded as underachievers for losing in the round

Villanova has lost in the round of 32 as a top-two seed the past two years. Coach Jay Wright says he wants to do well to earn respect for the Big East.

of 32 the last two years. They will return this year, along with fellow No. 2 seed Xavier, understanding the label and eager to shed it. “We do take that responsibility seriously,” said Wright, whose team plays UNC Asheville on Friday. “I really would like us to get to a Final Four for the Big

East as much as for these guys. ... I really would, because we love this league. And we want this league to get respect.” The last current Big East team to reach the Final Four was Butler in 2011. Every other power conference has sent at least that many except the Pac-12, which has not produced a Final Four team since 2008. “Just because we haven’t had it in the last two years doesn’t mean the Big East isn’t as good as it used to be,” Seton Hall coach Kevin Willard said. “I think things go in cycles. Our programs have great tradition and success in the past. I know we’ll get there again.” ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Kansas is the top overall seed after going 30-4 and winning the Big 12 regular-season and tournament titles. The Governors (that’s Austin Peay’s nickname, by the way) went 18-17, including a 39-point loss to Vanderbilt in their season opener.

This game is a prime candidate for the biggest upset of the first round if Marvelle Harris, who averaged 20.6 points a game, gets hot for the Mountain West Tournament champion Bulldogs. RATING:

True centers are nearing extinction, but guarding a skilled 7-footer is still no easy task. It will take a true team effort, and lots of fouls, for the Trojans to stop Purdue’s A.J. Hammons — the top center in college basketball this season.

To catch every minute of today’s 16 NCAA Tournament games would take dedication, several TVs and more than 12 straight hours. Ain’t nobody got time for that! Nothing brings college basketball fans together as much as rooting against Duke — and intentionaltripper Grayson Allen hasn’t made this year’s squad any more likable. If the Seahawks get Duke into foul trouble, they could have a shot.

The Huskies would be in the NIT if it weren’t for Jalen Adams banking in a three-quarters-court shot in triple overtime of UConn’s American Athletic Conference quarterfinal win over Cincinnati. To keep the magic going, UConn needs to stop Colorado’s Josh Scott.

A helping bird in hand and that relationship between these two very different souls is what falconry is all about. Here you have a wild animal and you let it go completely free and it chooses to come back to you. It’s an enormously emotional experience, and I treasure it.

Helen Macdonald got over her father’s death with the aid of a hawk BOOKS Reeling from the death of her father, British author Helen Macdonald did something peculiar. She bought a goshawk, a massive raptor with a reputation for being extremely difficult to train. For a year, the two of them stalked the English countryside together, hunting rabbits and eschewing human company. Macdonald isn’t the first British writer to seek solace at the breast of a bird of prey. In the 1930s, T.H. White, the closeted author of “The Sword in the Stone,” trained a goshawk in an attempt to tame his own sexuality. In Macdonald’s stunning 2014 memoir, “H Is for Hawk,” the author describes how her bird helped her find her way through the tangled forest of grief, while telling White’s story in parallel. How do you follow up such a singular work? We asked Macdonald about that and more ahead of her talk Monday at Politics and Prose.

her as a character. It was very freeing to have that distance.

It took you five years after your father’s death to write ‘H Is for Hawk.” Was it hard to relive such a difficult time in your life? I had to get back into that state of mind that I was in, in that very dark but beautiful year. It was really quite hard and there were quite a few tears. But by the time I came to writing, the person that was in the book wasn’t really me anymore. She was this other person I had been, and I could treat

Did anything else surprising emerge as you wrote? There was far more T.H. White in it than I thought there would be. I began to be really haunted by this strange, sad and amazing character. He tried to train a goshawk himself and made quite a bad job of it. He wrote a book about it that I read when I was small, and I hated it. He didn’t know what he was doing, and he was unconsciously pretty cruel

MARZENA POGORZALY

Do you have any hawks in your care now? I haven’t got time to have a hawk right now. I do have a small green parrot. People think of parrots as much more cuddly and friendly than hawks, which is true, but it’s also much more vindictive. I’ve had more bites and more blood drawn by this parrot than I ever had with my goshawk. I love it to bits, though. It’s a great companion.

Helen Macdonald trained a goshawk and wrote about it in “H Is for Hawk.”

to the poor bird. Trying to weave his story alongside mine was a really interesting formal challenge. How did training a hawk help you cope with your father’s death? I wanted to be like a hawk, and the book traces this very strange psychological transference. It took a toll on my mental health at the time, but it seemed necessary. They are amazing animals. They come across as being very unlike us, very self-possessed, very powerful beings. But you can communicate with them,

Will your next book also be about animals? I think it’s going to pick up on a theme of “H Is for Hawk” — how we humans see the natural world. That’s the most important subject there is, in these environmentally apocalyptic times. We think the wild is something out there, which we shouldn’t touch. The spaces we live in are carefully policed as human-only spaces, where you’re only allowed to keep a few kinds of animals. Of course, there are issues with people keeping wild animals, but I still think that contact with animals is a good thing. They teach you what it is to be human. SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS)

If you’re looking for a way to mark St. Patrick’s Day this weekend, this should do the trick. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY FILM RIFFS

Teen spirit The story of Tris and her ragtag band of postapocalyptic acolytes continues this weekend with “The Divergent Series: Allegiant.” Though teens sometimes get a bad rap in movies, a group of them can really change the world. ‘SPACECAMP’: It’s like “Gravity” but with acne when a bunch of kids accidentally get launched into space and have to get home. All is fine until they have to pass the parallel parking portion of the exam. ‘THE CRAFT’: Harry Potter proves teens can be trusted to use magic in responsible ways. The girls in this movie do more of a home school version of Hogwarts — and without that structure and discipline, things get really bad and really dead fast. ‘STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON’:

Five scrappy kids blend their formidable talents to make music, change the face of hip-hop forever and get totally shafted when Oscar season hits. ‘MEAN GIRLS’: “The Plastics” are the girls who girls want to be and boys want to be with but everyone still hates, because high school is a time when literally nothing makes sense and everyone wants something that actually goes against their selfinterest. Like an election year! ‘CHRONICLE’: If power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, super powers must corrupt super-ly. So when three teenage boys get superpowers, they use them not so much for cutting class and more for destruction on a mass scale.

LET’S PLAY FAST CASUAL MADNESS

Vote with your gut, and let the District grub games begin!

Pizza

Fast-casual restaurants have become one of the District’s favorite dining trends, serving up quick meals in bowls, as sandwiches or on pizza dough. But which one is the best? That’s where you come in. Express and The Going Out Guide started with a list of 45 fast-casual eateries in eight categories and you helped us narrow down the field to 16, which will now compete in a March Madnessstyle bracket. First, familiarize yourself with the fast-casual contenders, then head to wapo.st/fastcasual to vote for your picks in the first round of play through Saturday. Voting continues in the round of eight from Sunday to Tuesday, and then the final four face off from March 24 to 26. Finally, the top two restaurants will battle it out from March 31 to April 3. On April 4, we’ll reveal the Fast Casual Madness champion. Things you can do in 90 seconds: Score a touchdown and make a pizza at SpinFire. Coincidentally, Pierre Garcon has done both. The Washington Redskins wide receiver is a founding partner at this build-your-own pizza spot founded in Ashburn, Va., with a second location now open in Rosslyn. Choose from 30-plus fresh toppings including Sriracha sausage and banana peppers.

Perhaps this local chain is so adored because it caters to just about every individual taste, diet and craving. We’re talking gluten-free crust, dessert pizzas and salads (although we can’t attest to how the latter taste because we can never resist the pies). Build your pizza from the crust up, or opt for one of the signature pies or the occasional special, like the hamburger-topped pie or the Reuben pizza.

What started as a modest taco cart has now become a recognizable local chain serving tacos for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tortillas (flour or corn) are customized with such fillings as pork, shredded beef and grilled chicken, as well as toppings including beans, pico de gallo and a variety of salsas. Tacos not your thing? There are also burritos, bowls, salads, quesadillas and nachos.

TaKorean made the transition from mobile vendor to brick-and-mortar shop. It fuses Latin American and Korean fare in a buildyour-own-format: Diners choose a protein (chicken, steak, pork, tofu or vegetable) to go in their corn — no flour! — tortillas (or rice or slaw bowls) and then go crazy topping them. Feel free to stick with one slaw (kimchi, romaine or kale), but you’d be foolish not to add all the toppings: salsa roja, Sriracha sauce, lime crema, sesame seeds and cilantro.

This homegrown chain, founded by a trio of Georgetown grads, had humble beginnings when it debuted its straight-from-the-farm salads in a tiny, green-roofed shack on M Street. It’s since blossomed to 40-plus shops across the country — as far away as Los Angeles. Bragging that ingredients like baby spinach, apples and cucumbers are “local” and “seasonal” may induce eye rolls today, but back in 2007 the concept was fairly novel. NO. Chewing is so overrated. That’s why Chopt rocks a blade over all of its produce — chopping it into tiny pieces — before piling it in a bowl and sending you on your way. Founded by two buddies who believed they could make healthy food delicious, Chopt features a menu with gourmet ingredients like gold and purple beets, millet and panko-fried chicken.

You won’t find any fried chicken at Chix, and you won’t miss it. With three flavor blends (Chix original, Colombian and Peruvian), this eco-friendly local outlet packs more flavor into its rotisserie chicken than even deep-fried birds dusted with secretive blends of herbs and spices. The sides are no slouch either, especially the guacamole and the black bean hummus, both of which come with warm pita.

Come for the ’cue, stay for the arteryarresting specialties such as the Redneck Fondue (three-cheese dip mixed with chili) and Soul Rolls (egg rolls stuffed with meat, onions, cheese and a side of Redneck Fondue for dipping). When it comes to meats cooked low and slow, the pulled pork is the pick here. Don’t forget to grab a hunk of cornbread and to load up on their house barbecue sauces.

Leave your skepticism at home. Buredo’s burrito-sized sushi rolls (stay with us …) are so wrong they’re right, and are a convenient way to satisfy your hunger for quality fish and fresh vegetables. Equivalent to about two or three normal sushi rolls, a Buredo roll is a perfectly proportioned mix of protein, rice, sauces and other Japanese toppings. One major plus: No chopsticks needed.

You know the drill: Choose your grain base (or a salad), a meat, some vegetables, a sauce and a garnish. Though the process is formulaic, ShopHouse’s menu is anything but. Meats pop with Southeast Asian ingredients, including lemongrass, fish sauce and coconut. Tangy sauces such as spicy red curry and tamarind vinaigrette compete for your attention.

Before this now-ubiquitous burgers-and-fries chain entirely changed our expectations, where else could you order a single- or double-patty bacon cheeseburger with tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, raw onions, jalapenos, lettuce, pickles and hot sauce, without causing a complete meltdown behind the counter? The Cajun fries are pretty great, too.

A robust menu of Philadelphia-inspired hoagies is this sandwich outlet’s claim to fame. The menu runs two dozen subs deep and is divided by meats and fillings: roast beef, breaded chicken, roast pork, Italian cold cuts, turkey, vegetarian and the relatively recent addition of cheesesteaks, served on either an Italian seeded, multigrain or soft seedless roll. Don’t overlook the risotto balls, either.

Chipotle has had a tough year, but it’s bound to bounce back. The burrito-slinging behemoth has a customizable menu that begins with your choice of vessel — burrito, bowl, tacos or salad — and ends with proteins ranging from braised pork to shredded tofu and such salsas as fresh tomato and roasted chili-corn. Plus, there’s chips and guac.

Potbelly isn’t the place to go in search of the next sushi-burrito or Cronut, but it is where to go for classic, unfussy fare — warm sandwiches stuffed with meatballs and marinara, chicken salad or smoked ham and Swiss cheese. A big perk: It serves milkshakes with cookies clinging to the straw.

The build-your-own menu at Roti, a lunch staple downtown, can be served up three ways: as a sandwich, a salad or a rice plate. Diners start with a protein, such as salmon, chicken kabobs or steak roti, then add sauces (like the spicy s’hug or the mild tahini), sides and toppings. The rice plate comes with three of the sides and toppings, which include hummus, couscous and red cabbage slaw. Get a salad and add unlimited sides and toppings to your stomach’s delight.

Founded by three childhood friends as an outgrowth of their sit-down Cava Mezze restaurants, Cava Grill debuted in Bethesda and has expanded to D.C., Virginia and L.A. Cava offers pita sandwiches, salads and bowls with handmade spreads like the classic hummus and the jalapeno-infused “crazy feta.” (You can also find the dips in area grocery stores.) Proteins include grilled meatballs, falafel and braised lamb. For toppings, choose from such options as tomato and onion salad, cauliflower quinoa tabbouleh and Gordy’s Pickle Jar banana peppers.

The other side of Lake Street Dive Jazzy rock act takes a kitchen-sink approach on new LP ‘Side Pony’

MUSIC The four members of Lake Street Dive don’t really care if you like their new album, “Side Pony.” You can tell from the title track. “It’s [about] anything you do or say or wear as an attitude, your specific weirdness that you do unapologetically,” says lead singer Rachael Price. The album’s

namesake song began as a bubbly appreciation of the kitschy hairstyle of the same name, but when lyrics like “Baby I’m just livin’ my life” were added, “we realized that ‘side pony’ can represent anything that you do that’s different and weird,” Price says. “Weird” isn’t the right word to describe the jazzy rock act’s new work, but “different” certainly is. For its fourth studio album, the band took a break from its horn-heavy ’60s blues sound and time traveled to the synth-soaked

’70s — kind of like trading Peggy Lee for Donna Summer. For the 30-year-old Price, whose rich, earthy jazz tone is the musical heart of Lake Street Dive, the switch-up offered a chance to play diva on such stages as the 9:30 Club, where the band plays twice next week, and Wolf Trap, which the group headlines in June. “That’s a game I play in my head, that I don’t really think anybody picks up on except me,” she says. “To think about certain singers for each song, like, ‘How

If you go out on stage every night you can always be improving, always be finding different cracks inside the delivery to call on different emotions. No matter whom she’s pretending to be, fans are listening, enough to make “Side Pony, released last month, the band’s first album to top Billboard’s Top Rock and Alternative albums charts. “The more feedback you get, the more it gets in your head, Price says. “You start to feel the pressure of delivering what people have said they liked about you in the past. We chose to have the mentality going into this album of being like, ‘Let’s try it all. There’s nothing that isn’t necessarily in our wheelhouse, so let’s give it all a shot.’

“We chose to have the mentality going into this album of being like, ‘Let’s try it all.’   RACHAEL PRICE, lead singer of Lake Street Dive, on “Side Pony

That attitude explains why Price and her bandmates are so good at reinventing themselves. That, and the fact that they’ve kind of done it before. After meeting at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music in 2004, Price, guitarist Mike “McDuck Olson, bassist Bridget Kearney and drummer Mike Calabrese had a wild idea: They’d form a “free country group (think

avant-garde jazz, but with twang). “It was never, ever, ever realized whatsoever, Price says. Instead, the quartet focused on making music that felt “true, she says. They’ve since become known for playful production (like “Hell Yeah, a surf rock-tinged anthem about making the first move) and an uncanny ability to put new spins on heartbreak (like “How Good It Feels, about a newly single woman who can’t bear to admit her own loneliness). Those two aren’t mutually exclusive, Price says: “You can sing about sad things in any groove you feel. How “Side Pony of her. LORI McCUE (EXPRESS)

Must-see art in D.C. IN A CITY AWASH WITH MUSEUMS, perusing art is always possible,

but it isn’t always easy. With so much on view, it can feel like you need an art history degree to navigate it all. Which paintings should out-of-towners see at the National Gallery of Art? Which pieces should new transplants visit at the Smithsonian museums? And is there anything left for locals to discover? To answer those questions, The Washington Post asked museum directors, curators and the paper’s Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic, Philip Kennicott, to reveal their favorite pieces. Throw in the classic works everyone should visit at least once, and the result is an impressive list of the must-see art in D.C. Consider it an art lover’s bucket list. Phillips Collection, 1600 21st St. NW

Approach the tiny screen that represents the District in “Electronic Superhighway” and you’ll see yourself live on closed-circuit TV. That’s one of the many playful touches in Korean-born Nam June Paik’s 40-foot-wide assemblage, which represents the United States in images fed from 50 DVD players to 335 television sets, plus that D.C. one. The screens show sweeping landscapes, iconic products and clips from Hollywood movies, all hurtling by as if glimpsed from a car racing at the speed limit. Colorful neon tubes outline the states and one other geographic feature: the Mississippi River, rippling from Minnesota to Louisiana as blue light. M.J.

It’s the best-known painting ever acquired by art collector Duncan Phillips, but “Luncheon of the Boating Party” is not typical of the work assembled by him and his successors at the Phillips Collection. The Phillips places emphasis on colorists such as Mark Rothko, and while Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s painting is certainly colorful, it’s more notable for its deft (if somewhat idealized) depiction of the artist’s own friends at leisure along the Seine. The picture was finished in 1881, when impressionism was still suspect in France. Yet it was never especially controversial, perhaps because its looser approach was not a dramatic break with realism. In a city full of triumphant statuary, “The Burghers of Calais” cracks the mold. It’s big and yet human-scaled, and the heroism it celebrates is selfsacrifice, not conquest. In the 14th century, during one of the many wars between the French and their cousins across the channel, the city of Calais was about to fall. England’s Edward III reportedly said he would spare the city’s residents if six of its leaders surrendered to him with nooses around their necks. They did but were not hanged, thanks to the intercession of Edward’s queen, Philippa. Sculptor Auguste Rodin was the ideal artist to memorialize these men. M.J.

NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART

Phillips Collection director Dorothy Kosinski is drawn to pieces that “inspire a contemplative state of mind,” a condition that easily arises in the Phillips’ Rothko Room. Created in the early 1960s, it was the only room installation that American painter Mark Rothko helped assemble of his own accord, working with collector Duncan Phillips on lighting, furniture and the hanging height of four paintings. “It’s quite a fabulous testimony to the daring of [Phillips] to find works by one of the most edgy, abstract artists of his day and make … a whole room devoted to those works,” Kosinski says. Leonardo da Vinci, ‘Ginevra de’ Benci,’ 1474/1478 National Gallery of Art, Sixth Street and Constitution Avenue NW

Call it Washington’s “Mona Lisa.” The portrait of Ginevra de’ Benci is the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci on public display in all the Americas. The late15th-century oil is more austere than Leonardo’s best-known portrait, made about 25 years later. There’s no hint of a smile on the face of this young woman, probably 16 and newly engaged when she posed. But like “Mona Lisa,” she is lovely, and beautifully portrayed with his then-innovative naturalism. M.J.

Yamaki Pine, 1625

U.S. National Arboretum, 3501 New York Ave. NE

The Yamaki Pine was given to the United States in 1976 by the bonsai master Masaru Yamaki, who was only one in a long line of artists who have tended this living fusion of design, craft, vision and horticulture since 1625. It survived the atomic bomb that destroyed Hiroshima, and it flourishes today at the U.S. National Arboretum, full of life, perfect in form, older than D.C. itself and certainly one of its most beautiful man-made objects. Yinka Shonibare’s headless mannequin of Antoine Lavoisier, the French chemist who named hydrogen and oxygen, is on view at the Hirshhorn through April 10. It is a favorite of Johnnetta B. Cole, director of the National Museum of African Art, who admires works rich in contrasts. “Shonibare is asking us to think about a duality,” Cole says, “because Enlightenment thinkers liberated our thinking in the 18th century, but they also founded arguments to support colonialism and European domination.” W.S.H.

New Jersey native Chakaia Booker used sliced and shredded rubber tires to create 10-foothigh waves for this hulking installation, on view at the Renwick Gallery through May 8. E. Carmen Ramos, curator of Latino art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, says it’s her favorite piece in the District. “It’s amazing what [Booker] has been able to do by manipulating the tires,” Ramos says. “[She] cuts them and reveals their innards to make us look at their actual materiality.” W.S.H.

National Museum of Women in the Arts, 1250 New York Ave. NW

Sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ monument to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts 54th Regiment in Boston commemorates one of the first official units of black soldiers in the Civil War. The plaster mock-up at the National Gallery of Art is just as moving. “The faces on the men are so individualistic, so human, at a time when African-Americans were reduced to stereotypes,” says Lonnie Bunch, director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. “This piece really embraced their fullness as human beings.” W.S.H.

New York-based artist Mickalene Thomas creates elaborate, rhinestone-studded collages of African-American women. The crystals that comprise “A-E-I-O-U and Sometimes Y” mirror how women use jewels to adorn and mask themselves, says the National Museum of African Art’s Johnnetta B. Cole. “It’s the duality of how much I share with other African-American women and all women, but yet how different I am from them, as well,” she says. W.S.H. CONTINUED ON PAGE 28

Renwick Gallery curator-in-charge Nicholas Bell urges art lovers to visit the National Gallery of Art’s “Power and Pathos: Bronze Sculpture of the Hellenistic World” exhibition before it closes on Sunday. A significant showing of the world’s greatest Greek bronzes, the exhibition includes a life-size bronze statue that towers over viewers with its sheer physicality. “I just about fell down when I saw the bronze piece ‘Victorious Youth,’ ” Bell says. “It was so moving. I was absolutely captivated.” W.S.H.

WINNER! TONY AWARD FOR BEST PLAY

James Hampton was a classic “outsider” artist who worked much of his life on a single piece so large that only part of it is on view at the American Art Museum. Constructed in a rented garage, “The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations’ Millennium General Assembly” is a vast, mystical assemblage piece, made of found objects and refuse, covered in foil and dedicated to the artist’s religious vision. There’s nothing quite like it in the world. P.K.

Augustus Saint-Gaudens, ‘Adams Memorial,’ commonly known as ‘Grief,’ circa 1890 Rock Creek Cemetery, 201 Allison St. NW

There are plenty of works by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in the Smithsonian and the National Gallery of Art, but one of the most evocative of his statues is in Rock Creek Cemetery. Commissioned by the great American writer Henry Adams, the Adams Memorial is a haunting, shrouded figure, set alone in a peaceful copse, a powerful memorial to Adams’ wife, who died by her own hand in 1885. Jean-BaptisteSimeon Chardin, ’Soap Bubbles,’ circa 1733 National Gallery of Art

There are too many essential works — an important Leonardo, several Vermeers, magnificent El Grecos, a stunning Dutch collection — in the National Gallery of Art to choose one above the rest. But JeanBaptiste-Simeon Chardin’s captivating “Soap Bubbles” is a work you can usually have to yourself. It captures an ephemeral moment, with a beautiful play of light and a little bit of mystery, and can serve as a metaphor both for life itself and the transitory experience of looking at great art. In the year before Rihanna released her highly anticipated, oft-delayed eighth album, “Anti,” the pop star dropped three hit singles — “FourFiveSeconds,” “B---- Better Have My Money” and “American Oxygen” — that didn’t make the final record. “Anti” didn’t even have a proper single until just hours before its release on Tidal in late January. “Work,” a dancehall-inspired collaboration with Drake, has topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for four straight weeks, thanks in no small part to the song’s two seductive music videos.

Melissa Rauch plays Hope, a bitter ex-gymnast whose medal has become an albatross, in “The Bronze.”

In ‘The Bronze,’ Rauch adds nice bit of tarnish The actress made sure her character was sour right to the bitter end FILM Melissa Rauch, co-writer and star of “The Bronze,” has spent a lot of time talking about the comedy-drama, which opens Friday. The one thing that interviewers keep bringing up over and over is the “likability” — or lack thereof — of her character, Hope. Is she tired of discussing it? “I could talk about this for hours,” says Rauch, best known for her role as Bernadette on “The Big Bang Theory.” “So we may run out of time.” It’s fine with Rauch if people don’t like Hope, an Olympic gymnast whose glory days are

well behind her. Hope took the bronze medal at the 2004 games after pulling off a miraculous, Kerri Strug-like performance on the uneven bars. After further injury ended her attempt at the 2008 Olympics, she has remained in her small town, living on free Sbarro pizza, stealing from her mailman dad (Gary Cole) and showcasing an impressive talent for profanity. It was important to Rauch and her co-writer (and husband), Winston Rauch, that Hope’s sour attitude be a product of her circumstances — not something inherent within her. “We wanted to make sure it was authentic to the experience she was going through,” says Rauch, who was in D.C. to promote the film. “She was cut off from her dream; she’s stuck and unable to reset or re-engage

in this new phase of her life, and it’s made her very bitter.” Rauch emphasizes that “The Bronze” is not a story that’s all about redemption. “We didn’t want to put a big bow on it at the end and have her become this totally different person in an hour and a half, when people who are in a situation like this could take years of therapy to see the other side of it,” she says. “It was important to us that this character remain as bitter as she would have if those circumstances really did happen, and if that makes her a little unlikable, then we would rather that be the case than it not be true to the story.” So go ahead a nd hate Hope. After all, Hope herself wouldn’t particularly care.

“Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes will discuss her memoir, “Year of Yes,” at the Library of Congress National Book Festival. Rhimes joins a long list of authors recently added to the festival, which will take place Sept. 24 in Washington. Other participants include Colson Whitehead, who will discuss his highly anticipated novel “The Underground Railroad;” Joel Grey, the Oscarwinning actor who recently published a memoir called “Master of Ceremonies;” and Carl Hiaasen, who will talk about his upcoming thriller, “Razor Girl.”

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has added three new governors (two of whom are non-white) to its 51-member board and appointed six minority members to other leadership positions. Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs announced the new appointees Tuesday. The Board of Governors also ratified other changes proposed in January and aimed at increasing diversity in response to the #OscarsSoWhite crisis. The changes include limiting Oscar voting rights to those active in the movie business. (AP)

“Because all things that are good eventually become bad.” CHRIS GAYOMALI, at GQ.com, is dreading Instagram’s move toward an algorithm-based feed in the coming months. Although the decision appears to be unpopular with users, the company said in its announcement Tuesday that moving away from a chronological feed will improve the user experience. Gayomali, however, compares the move to a similar switch by Facebook, which “has all the lovability of a 2005 Kia Optima.”

“He doesn’t look like a joke. He really looks noble and regal and believable.” TIM GUNN, giving his review at washingtonpost.com of a Harris Tweed suit designed for a horse. The Post contacted the “Project Runway” host for his critique after photos of a former racehorse sporting a three-piece suit became an Internet hit earlier this week. The outfit was commissioned by a bookmaker ahead of a major racing event in England. It took designer Emma Sandham-King four weeks and nearly 20 yards of tweed to finish the ensemble.

View the 12 finalists, read their stories and cast your vote for who you think should take part in our 12-week weight loss challenge. The six finalists with the most votes cast by the public will be selected to participate. “You win #Tayvin, we’re all officially jealous.”

For a vote to be eligible, the vote must identify only one (1) finalist. Limit one (1) vote per person. Other limitations may apply. Voting begins at 12:01 a.m. ET on March 14, 2016 and goes until 10:00 p.m. on March 18, 2016. For complete official rules of the 2016 Gold’s Gym Get Fit Challenge, visit goldsgetfit.com.

@AJALTOMARE12 reacts to President Barack Obama’s NCAA tournament bracket, which included very few upset picks. Obama, who is 1-for-7 in picking the national champion since his arrival at the White House, chose No. 1 seed Kansas to win the tourney. Joining the Jayhawks in his Final Four are North Carolina, Michigan State and Texas A&M.

MEGAN MCCLUSKEY, at time.com, reacts to pop superstar Taylor Swift and her DJ boyfriend Calvin Harris’ vacation pictures on Instagram. McCluskey says the tropical photos of the couple celebrating their oneyear anniversary “remind us all how awesome their lives are.” OK, now it’s back to the Metro for the rest of us.

“Barry Bonds just beat the Marlins players on a back field HR BP contest. Including Stanton.” @CRAIGMISH, of SirusXM, says the baseball

legend still has the swing that made him MLB’s home run king (we won’t mention his suspected steroid use). Bonds, 51, who is in his first season as the Miami Marlins’ hitting coach, even out-slugged 26-year-old superstar Giancarlo Stanton. Sadly, Mish said a phone malfunction kept him from getting footage of Bonds’ power display.

Ben Affleck told Ellen DeGeneres on Wednesday that he and Jennifer Garner are “good friends and we’re doing our best” after announcing they are separating after 10 years of marriage. Affleck, who was on DeGeneres’ talk show to promote his upcoming film, “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice,” added, “Our kids are fabulous, and we’re working our best for them.” (EXPRESS) Who needs more rings when you both have watches covered in diamonds? CASTING

More proof that Hollywood years are not Earth years Olivia Wilde said on Tuesday that she wasn’t cast in the 2013 film “The Wolf of Wall Street” because she was deemed “too old.” “I have some ability to cut off emotionally,” the 32-year-old actress told the “The Howard Stern Show.” “The second I don’t get a role, it’s dead to me.” Wilde was on air discussing her new HBO project, “Vinyl,” which is produced by Martin Scorsese, who directed “Wolf.” (EXPRESS)

News that Matthew Perry will portray the late Sen. Ted Kennedy in an upcoming Reelz cable network miniseries was not well received by some former aides and confidants of the lawmaker. “Ugh,” was the succinct reply of one former Kennedy-ite. “I can’t imagine this is going to work out very well for the rest of his career,” said Jim Manley, a longtime Kennedy spokesman. “The Kennedys — After Camelot” will air in 2017.

POLITICS

Careful, Jerry, or Donald might take you up on this Jerry Springer says the raucous Republican campaign is too much even for him. “When I first started watching the Republican debates I said that, you know, if they’re going to do my show, they should start paying me,” the former talk show host told MSNBC on Tuesday. While it’s one thing to have a TV show like that, he said, “That’s not how you run a country. It’s disgraceful.” (AP)

Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill still aren’t headed to the altar anytime soon, according to her interview in the April issue of Nylon magazine. “We’re still learning each other, feeling each other out,” she said. Minaj, who said she’s confident in the direction their relationship is headed, has stoked engagement rumors over the last year, flaunting two impressive diamond rings. “He said that my third ring would be my engagement ring,” she said. “Sometimes he calls me his fiancée, and I’m always trying to stop him, like, ‘Nope! I ain’t got that third ring yet!’” (EXPRESS)
