Poll: Same-Sex Marriage Support Hits New High Ahead of high court debate, 58 percent say it should be legal

The number of Americans who now say being gay is just the way some people are, not something people choose to be, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll released Monday. About 20 years ago, fewer than half of the public said they felt that way. (T WP)

Meanwhile … Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton announced her support for gay marriage Monday, putting her in line with other potential Democratic presidential candidates on a social issue that is rapidly gaining public approval. Clinton made the announcement in an online video released Monday morning by the gay rights advocacy group Human Rights Campaign. “I believe America is at its best when we champion the freedom and dignity of every human being,” she said.

Washington Public support for gay marriage has hit a new high as Americans increasingly see homosexuality not as a choice but as a way some people are, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. The poll shows that 58 percent of Americans now believe it should be legal for gay and lesbian couples to get married; 36 percent say it should be illegal. Public attitudes toward gay marriage are nearly the opposite of what they were a decade ago: In 2003, 37 percent favored gay nuptials, and 55 percent opposed them. The Supreme Court takes up the issue of gay marriage next week, and nearly two-thirds of all Americans say the matter should be decided for all states on the basis of the U.S. Constitution, not with each

state making its own laws. Among young adults age 18 to 29, support for gay marriage is overwhelming, hitting a record high of 81 percent in the new poll. Support has also been increasing among older adults, but those 65 years and

older remain opposed: 44 percent say same-sex marriage should be legal; 50 percent say illegal. A slim majority of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents under 50 years old now support gay marriage. Nearly 7 in 10 from that

group who are 65 and older oppose it, although that is down from more than 8 in 10 just four years ago. In the current data, about threequarters of those who do not see homosexuality as a choice support gay marriage, with most supporting it “strongly.” More than two-thirds of those who consider it a choice oppose gay marriage, with almost all intensely against it. Currently, gay marriage is legal in nine states and the District of Columbia, but public views are more similar than not across state lines. In the states that allow gay marriage, 68 percent say such same-sex marriages should be legal, but so do 56 percent of those in states where the practice is not legal. The Washington Post-ABC News poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. JON COHEN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

RNC to Broaden Appeal In new plan, group aims to fix its image to draw in minorities Washington Over strong objections from some conservative leaders, the Republican National Committee formally endorsed immigration reform Monday and outlined plans for a $10 million outreach to minority groups — gay voters among them — as part of a strategy to make the GOP more “welcoming and inclusive” for voters who overwhelmingly supported Democrats in 2012. In a report released Monday, the RNC says that the way the party communicates its principles isn’t resonating widely enough, and focus groups perceive the party as “narrow minded,” “out of touch”

The Recommendations The Republican National Committee’s shift on minority outreach may be the most visible change in the coming months. Party leaders have crafted dozens of recommendations following a months-long self-examination prompted by last year’s painful election losses. The report also calls on Republicans to take a harder line with corporate America, loosen political fundraising laws in Washington and in state capitals, and cut in half the number of candidate debates in a shortened 2016 presidential primary calendar. (AP)

and “stuffy old men.” “The perception that we’re the party of the rich unfortunately continues to grow,” said Reince Priebus, the RNC chairman, on Monday. To broaden its appeal, the party must reach out to minority voters and others, according to the report: “We must embrace and champion comprehensive immigration reform. If we do not, our party’s appeal will continue to

shrink,” it said. Acknowledging the tough road ahead for some immigration reform in a divided GOP, Priebus refused to say whether “comprehensive immigration reform” should include a pathway to citizenship. A veteran Republican strategist and one of the report’s authors, Sally Bradshaw, said that there would be opposition within the party but said “other Republicans are starting to step up.” STE VE PEOPLES (AP)

Nation Ohio City Official: Community Supports Widening Rape Inquiry Columbus, Ohio A city reeling from the convictions of two high school football players in the rape of a 16-year-old girl will back a wide-ranging investigation that could target adults, including coaches, who didn’t initially report the allegations, the city’s top official said Monday. Residents of Steubenville want to see justice done, and the city will

be better off going forward because of the investigation, city manager Cathy Davison said. “Football is important in Steubenville, but I think overall if you looked at the community in and of itself, it’s the education process, the moral fiber of our community and the heritage of our community that is even more important,” Davison said in her first comments since a judge convicted the players Sunday.

Trenton Mays, 17, and Ma’Lik Richmond, 16, were sentenced to at least a year in juvenile prison. Mays was ordered to serve an additional year for photographing the underage girl naked. They can be held until they turn 21. The announcement of the guilty verdict was barely an hour old Sunday when state Attorney General Mike DeWine said he was continuing his investigation and would con-

Cyprus Plans to Raid Residents’ Savings Vote to seize up to 10 percent of funds is delayed; banks closed Nicosia, Cyprus A plan to seize up to 10 percent of people’s savings in the small Mediterranean island nation of Cyprus sent shock waves across Europe on Monday as households realized the money they have in the bank may not be safe. A weekend agreement between Cyprus and its European partners called for the government to raid bank accounts as part of a

$20.4 billion financial bailout, the first time in the eurozone’s crisis that the prospect of seizing individuals’ savings has been raised. Facing outrage, Cyprus’ government delayed a parliamentary vote on the seizure and ordered banks to remain shut until Thursday while it tries to modify the deal to reduce the hit on people with small deposits. Several hundred people gathered outside the parliament building, chanting “thieves, thieves.” “We’re very angry, betrayed, hurt and extremely disappointed,” said protester Andriana Constantinou.

“The damage is done. Europeans now know that their savings could be used to bail out banks.”

Cashing In Here are two reasons Cyprus wants to raid savings deposits:

Funding at stake: Cyprus’ banks, which took huge losses on bad Greek debt, are eight times the size of the economy. Cyprus would be unable to pay back the amount of loans it would need to rescue the banks. Russian funds: An estimated $26.17 billion of Russian money sits in Cypriot banks, part of it thought to be linked to money-laundering. European officials were loathe to give Cyprus bailout loans to protect those Russians’ savings. (AP)

— LOUISE COOPER OF FINANCIAL RESEARCH FIRM COOPERCITY, ON CYPRUS’ IDEA TO RAID PERSONAL SAVINGS ACCOUNTS TO HELP PAY FOR ITS BAILOUT

In order to get $13 billion in bailout loans from international creditors, Cyprus agreed to take a percentage of all deposits — including ordinary citizens’ savings. The

surprise deal stoked fears that deposits in other countries could be targeted. One solution doing the rounds is to make the tax more graduated. Still, the government has a battle to get a majority in the 56-member Parliament after 25 lawmakers said they would vote down the levy. The stakes are high for the country of a million people — a rejection of the package could leave the country bankrupt and possibly out of the common euro currency. Can Metro Change a Light Bulb? How many Metro employees does it take to replace a light bulb? Several lights have been out on the Ballston-MU station platform for weeks. I have reported the issue twice. But it seems like the station manager’s job should be to, well, manage the station. He or she should even be able to see most of the platform without having to go down there. Why does it take Metro so long to do even the simplest task? That’s a bad show. And I agree with you that it should be part of the station manager’s job. Did you report it to the station

manager, or to the Metro customer service center? I’d try both those routes. And I guess from the available information, we don’t know whether the station manager actually did report it. Could be that the manager reported it, but nothing has happened yet.

We’re talking about the fact that when the Silver Line starts service, probably at the end of this year, the gap between Blue Line trains will be 12 minutes, at peak as well as off-peak. This will add to the current difficulties Blue Line riders are having. In the short term, I’d like to see more eight-car trains on the Blue Line. Longer term, I like Metro’s

What can we do about pedestrians who ignore the flashing red “don’t walk” signal? Turning vehicles get stuck waiting, making congestion even worse around Clarendon Metro station. Are these pedestrians selfish, oblivious or what? Pedestrians are selfish and oblivious. Just like drivers. I do think pedestrians should be aware that drivers need a chance to turn at crowded intersections. Teen Shot, Killed by Homeowner Intruder mistakenly entered neighbor’s home, family says Sterling, Va. Loudoun County officials have identified the teenager who was killed after entering his neighbor’s home early Sunday morning as 16-year-old Caleb Gordley, a junior at Park View High School. Caleb, who police said had been

drinking with friends, got into his neighbor’s home in the 45900 block of Pullman Court through a back window, officials said. It was unclear whether the homeowner left it open or Gordley if Caleb pushed it open, police said. Family members said Caleb, a three-sport athlete and a good student, mistakenly went to the wrong

house thinking it was his. Caleb’s home was two houses away. ing for which The Post is known,” Katharine Weymouth, publisher of The Post, said in a statement. Unlike the New York Times or Wall Street Journal, The Post has traditionally been a local business, pulling in large amounts of advertising from area merchants eager to reach the print edition’s audience. Revenue generated from the company’s online publishing activities, primarily The Post website and Slate, increased 5 percent in 2012 to $110.6 million.

The first state-level unemployment report for 2013 offered mixed signals about the health of the local labor market, with unemployment rates ticking up in January in D.C., Maryland and Virginia, even as two of the jurisdictions added jobs. Maryland gained 6,700 jobs and the state posted the highest number of jobs on its payrolls in nearly five years. Still, the jobless rate rose to 6.7 percent from 6.6 percent. The employment picture was gloomiest in Virginia, where unemployment crept up to 5.6 percent from 5.5 percent. The commonwealth shed 3,900 jobs between December and January. D.C. added 1,500 jobs in January, while its unemployment rate rose to 8.6 percent from 8.5 percent. The rate increase is a result of more people entering t he labor force in Washington, said James Bohnaker, associate economist with Moody’s Analytics.

This summer, The Washington Post will start charging frequent users of its website, asking those who look at more than 20 articles or multimedia features a month to pay a fee, although the company has not yet decided how much it will charge. The paper said, however, that it would exempt large parts of its audience from having to pay. Its home-delivery subscribers will have free access to all of The Post’s digital products, and students, teachers, school administrators, government employees and military personnel will have unlimited access to the website while in their schools and workplaces. ‘Prius Tax’ Foes Urge McDonnell to Kill Fee Two legislators from Northern Virginia traveled to Richmond on Monday to deliver a petition against a $100-a-year fee on alternative-fuel vehicles. Del. Scott Surovell and Sen. Adam Ebbin delivered 6,845 signatures to the office of Gov. Bob McDonnell, calling on him to amend the McDonnell General Assembly’s $1.4 billion-a-year transportation funding overhaul to eliminate the fee. Surovell and Ebbin said the fee, which would generate about $10 million in fiscal 2014, is contrary to the goals of improving the environment and lessening dependence on foreign oil. Among the council members mulling a mayoral run, Muriel Bowser is the only woman.

Council Member Bowser To Announce Mayoral Run Washington D.C. Council member Muriel Bowser will announce Saturday that she is launching a run for mayor, two people involved in the campaign said, making her the first to officially enter the 2014 race. The announcement is set for Bowser’s childhood home in Ward 5, said one campaign adviser who was not authorized to comment publicly. Bowser, 40, has represented Ward 4 as a Democrat since 2007. Picked by Adrian Fenty to fill his council seat after he became mayor, Bowser has followed a similar path on the council, focusing on constituent services and quality-of-life issues. Tom my Wel ls, D -Wa rd 6, launched an exploratory campaign in January and said he is likely to officially enter the race. Jack Evans, D-Ward 2, has said he plans to enter the race, and David Catania, I-At Large, has also pondered running.

Advance the Top Three Seeds

HOW TO BE A MARCH MADNESS MONARCH

A No. 16 seed has never won a game, a No. 15 seed hasn’t won since 2001 and No. 14 seeds are 3-48 over the past 12 years. Just move those top three seeds to the next round and don’t think twice about it.

Pick Some Upsets

it’s important to look at trends from past NCAA tournaments. Here are six simple rules to follow as you make your picks. JAMIE SQUIRE/GETTY IMAGES

JEFFRE Y TOMIK (E X PRES S)

Ben McLemore of Kansas is projected to be the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft.

Don’t Fall in Love With a Conference

The only year in which more than two teams from one conference advanced to the Final Four was 1985, when Georgetown, Villanova and St. John’s represented the Big East. So that bracket with Michigan State, Ohio State, Indiana and Michigan in the Final Four probably won’t end favorably. The Big East has had 28 NCAA tournament invites since 2010 — by far the most of any conference — but only four Big East teams have made the Elite Eight in the past three years.

6

THINKSTOCK/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

3

The last team outside the six BCS conferences to win a national championship was UNLV in 1990. That doesn’t mean mid-majors can’t make a Final Four run. In the past seven years, Butler (twice), VCU, Memphis and George Mason have made a Final Four appearance. But none were able to win it all. Sorry, Gonzaga.

When filling out your bracket,

At least one No. 12 seed has won a game in 24 of the past 27 tournaments. For four straight years a No. 13 seed has advanced, and No. 11 seeds had a 7-4 record in last year’s tournament. Now the tough part: Picking the right double-digit seed to win. As for going chalk for the Final Four, all four No. 1 seeds made it to the national semifinals just once (2008).

5

Mid-Majors Can Only Go So Far

No team higher than a No. 11 seed has ever made it to the Final Four — George Mason (2006) and VCU (2011) being the most recent No. 11s to do so. And since 1997, the highest seed to win it all has been a No. 3 seed. When picking a champion, there are really only about 12 teams that have a legitimate shot.

When filling out your bracket, here are a few simple rules to keep mind. Jeffrey Tomik (Express)

Carlos Emory and Oregon are a No. 12 seed that could pull off an upset.

This Thing Goes Up to 11

Talent Matters

Like last year’s Kentucky team, the NCAA champion always has multiple future pros on its roster. Having talent seems like an obvious prerequisite to picking a winner, but the only teams in the field that have more than one player projected as a first-round draft lock are Kansas, Indiana and Michigan.

NIT Offers Terps Chance to Grow

In Brief

Maryland will try to build on solid play in ACC tournament

A month ago, Maryland seemed destined to miss the postseason. Coach Mark Turgeon was ready to get away from the losing and the inconsistency. Nothing he said seemed to stick with his young team, and he was tired. 7 P.M. Today | ESPN2 Coach Mark Turgeon and Maryland are a No. 2 seed in the NIT, where they’ll host Niagara in the first round today.

But something happened over the past few weeks, incrementally at first and then in a sudden rush of competent basketball at the ACC tournament. Turgeon noticed he was finally getting through to his players. Maryland whipped Wake Forest in the first round of the ACC tournament and then beat Duke. The Terps trailed the entire game against North Carolina in the semifinals but never gave up. In the final minutes, Turgeon fist-pumped as the Terps edged closer. They had

a chance, but lost. Still Turgeon was smiling. “Sometimes you don’t win on the scoreboard but you win, and we won [Saturday] as a program. Our program got better,” he said. “I’m having so much fun because they’re listening. … What this group has done in the last three weeks? Pretty amazing.” The Terps (22-12) fell short of an NCAA tournament bid, but did get a No. 2 seed in the NIT, where they’ll host the Niagara Purple Eagles (19-

13) of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the first round today. Maryland last hosted an NIT game in 2006 and fewer than 5,000 fans showed up for a Saturday morning tipoff against Manhattan, another MAAC school. The Terps lost 87-84. But this year’s tournament does present some degree of intrigue. If the Terps advance through their portion of the bracket, in which Alabama is the top seed, they could face Virginia in the NIT semifinals

and Kentucky in the finals. The Cavaliers beat the Terps twice in the regular season, and the Wildcats, ranked No. 3 in the country at the time, beat Maryland in the season opener in November. “We’re excited about this,” Turgeon said. “We have a young team, and we’re playing a lot of young players. This is a great opportunity for us to keep playing, and we’re looking forward to it. Our coaching staff and players are excited about the NIT.” DEREK TURNER (FOR EXPRESS)

Must-Win Games Come Early for the Caps Recently, the Capitals have started to liken the second half of this season to “playoff hockey,” where every game is crucial for them and winning is imperative. Washington is still very much on the outside looking in at the Eastern Conference playoff race. After earning a 5-3 victory over the Sabres on Sunday, the Capitals (12-15-1, 25 points) are in 13th place in the conference, seven points behind the first-place Jets in the Southeast Division and six points behind the eighth-seeded Hurricanes with only 20 games

Then, Washington makes its final stop in New York on Sunday to face a desperate Rangers team that also finds itself in a tenuous position. This truly is a make-or-break trip for the Capitals. While Tennessee has set the standard in women’s basketball, Stanford has been one of the most dominant teams lately. The Cardinal will try to reach the Final Four for a sixth straight season and end Hall of Fame coach Tara VanDerveer’s 21-year drought without a national championship. Led by junior star Chiney Ogwumike, Stanford may already have the most impressive win this season, ending Baylor’s 42-game winning streak in November. That’s the only loss that the defending national champion Lady Bears suffered this season. Unlike the men’s side, where it was a topsy-turvy season with major upsets seemingly every week, women’s basketball hasn’t seen the same parity. The top six teams in the final Associated Press poll only had two losses outside of one another, the fewest by far since writers began voting for the AP’s No. 1 in the 1994-95 season. The women’s basketball madness gets started Saturday — the

WELCOME

to the Spring 2013 edition of The Washington Post’s Ed.U Guide to Business and Graduate Education. In this edition we take a look at how graduate degrees are at the intersection of government and business; and we also report on enrollment trends and how they have changed the structure of graduate school programs. In the following pages, we describe what business schools are doing to help ensure that their MBA graduates are able to find stable, well-paying jobs in a slowly recovering economy. These days, information technology and national security are on the tip of everyone’s tongue. Here, we introduce you to several current and former graduate students who are setting out in emerging fields. In the first feature, we talk to two former government workers about their respective transitions into the graduate education field. Another story goes into depth about what area graduate programs are doing to stay ahead of the curve in emerging fields.

Jim Moser spent six years as a senior economist at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in Washington. Tim Quinn’s government résumé includes three years as chief of staff in the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy. Moser and Quinn have something in common beyond their service for Uncle Sam. Both left their government jobs in the last year to work in another field: graduate education. Moser was hired on at the American University Kogod School of Business to head up its Master of Science in Finance program. Quinn, for his part, is serving as associate dean at Loyola University Maryland’s Sellinger School of Business. The hiring of these former senior-level government officials by two prominent D.C.-area business schools is a sign that these institutions are eager to bring some public-sector perspective to programs that traditionally have focused on grooming students for private-sector careers. The hirings also are a sign of something else: the growth in graduate degree programs and courses that marry government and business.

Business Degree? After President Obama signed the Dodd-Frank legislation overhauling U.S. financial regulations, Moser and his team at the CFTC were charged with designing a system to allow for more transparent trading of derivatives, the financial instruments blamed by many for causing the late 2000s economic crisis. Now at Kogod, Moser teaches classes in investments and derivatives. He also is developing ideas for broadening the school’s MS in Finance program to include more coursework and content on regulatory issues. The Kogod School, like other D.C. graduate institutions, has long catered

to students who enter governmentand policy-related careers. Among the major employers of Kogod grads: big consulting firms such as Deloitte and CSC. Caitlin Simpson, 29, is a 2010 Kogod MBA graduate who works as a senior consultant at Deloitte serving federal government clients. Entering the field of federal consulting, Simpson said, was a “best-of-both-worlds” proposition. “It allowed me to continue to work in a field in which I was interested (government) but also provided a unique opportunity to apply the tools I learned during business school while providing strategic support to u a variety of clients,” Simpson said.

Teaching Students the“Science” of Regulation Of course, in many graduate programs in the D.C. area, regulatory and policy content is not something that is woven into the curriculum at various times; it is central to the coursework. At Johns Hopkins University, the Center for Biotechnology Education offers an MS in Regulatory Science that educates students entering both government and business careers in the intricacies of food and drug law, as well as product development, licensing and regulatory compliance. Thomas E. Colonna, associate director the Hopkins program, said it started in 2005 in response to the need for

Today, the MS in Regulatory Science program enrolls roughly 200 part-time students, of whom about two-thirds work in the private sector. “There are many regulated industries in this country, but this is one where you are continually developing new products and therefore coming back to the same people for approval on an ongoing basis,” Colonna said. “Streamlining the process and making it more efficient is in everyone’s interest.”

Colonna added that the need for this expertise has grown in recent years as Congress expanded FDA’s authority through laws such as the Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011, which is aimed at preventing outbreaks of foodborne illness.

School of Public Policy

But what about those students who are interested in the broader question of how public policies affect business, and, in turn, how business can affect those policies in the first place?

At George Mason University’s School of Public Policy, graduate students take a deep dive into the world of policymaking in areas from international trade and health and medical policy to transportation policy. One might think the overwhelming majority of the school’s alums would go on to careers in government or academia, but the facts show otherwise: more than one-third of its graduates (35 percent) are employed in private-sector jobs. One of those graduates is Paul Franklin, who received his master of public policy (MPP) from Mason in 2009. A

third-generation independent insurance agent based in Falls Church, Franklin, 28, also serves as a volunteer board member of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. He is intimately involved in the organization’s advocacy efforts.

“It is one thing to sell a product and help clients improve their financial security, but you also have to protect that security for the client in other ways,” Franklin said. “And a crucial way to do that is to know policy and to develop relationships with elected officials.”

Preparing Students for

Contracting Careers Government does more than develop policies and rules that affect business; government actually does business with business. Every year, the federal government procures more than $520 billion in goods and services from a wide range of businesses. To help students succeed in government contracting careers, The George Washington University School of Business recently launched a new MS in Government Contracts program. Benjamin Sears, 30, is a member of the program’s inaugural class. Sears entered the world of government procurement as an acquisitions officer with the Air Force. After leaving the military, he was hired by the consulting firm CACI to work in acquisitions at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. “You really are the business face of government in this job, and you need leadership and business skills along with a solid legal understanding so you can write contracts,” he said.

It’s that unique combination of legal and business acumen that the new GW program seeks to hone in its students. The program’s director, Neal Couture, said it offers the only degree in government contracts that provides an interdisciplinary education combining business and law. “The need for talented individuals in these jobs is not going to diminish in any way. In fact, it will only grow as government becomes more vigilant about getting the maximum value for its contracting dollars,” he said. •

In addition to its existing IT programs with cybersecurity specializations, Marymount recently launched an online MS in cybersecurity. The new program is an example of how graduate schools across the country are responding to the needs of employers, especially in sectors like cybersecurity, where protecting America’s digital infrastructure has become a national priority. Cybersecurity offerings as well as programs in other emerging fields also have helped to mitigate flat or declining graduate school enrollments that many university officials attribute to lingering economic uncertainty.

Graduate schools across the country are responding to the needs of employers, especially in sectors like cybersecurity, where protecting America’s digital infrastructure has become a national priority.

According to the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS), U.S. graduate programs saw a 1.7-percent dip in enrollments for first-time graduate students between fall 2010 and fall 2011; fall 2012 data will come out later this year. While enrollments are still ahead of where they were a decade ago, the 2010-11 period was the second consecutive year to see a slight decline.

In the face of these numbers, universities across the country are scrambling to develop and strengthen graduate programs in areas where they see growing demand from employers and students alike. Marymount, for example, is not alone in adopting cybersecurity programs. In addition, many universities are adding or strengthening programs in one of the fastest-growing sectors of the U.S. economy: healthcare. u

An especially popular area of study in the health field these days is health information technology. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment of medical records and health information technicians will grow by 21 percent between 2010 and 2020, faster than average for all occupations. One university that is well aware of these numbers and that has increased its offerings in the area of health information technology is Virginia Tech. In the last two years, the university’s Pamplin College of Business has added a two-course module in the subject to both its MBA and MS in Information Technology programs. “There is so much progress and change in this field, and it is only going to move faster in the years ahead,” said Parviz Ghandforoush, professor of business information technology and managing director at Virginia Tech. •

Universities across the country are scambling to develop and strengthen graduate programs in areas where they see growing demand from employers and students alike.

‘Real Housewives’ star Kenya Moore promises that her new DVD can give you a ‘stallion booty’

CorePower Yoga: Calorie Blast Yoga ($13)

Keeping up with “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” is always a workout. But this season, the cast of the Bravo show is really making the audience sweat with a pair of dueling fitness DVDs. Real Housewife Phaedra Parks released a program in the fall that promised to give viewers a “donkey boot y.” Now, Kenya Moore is competing with her “Booty Boot Camp” ($17), which comes with a similar pledge: “Get the round stallion booty you’ve always wanted.” According to Moore, a former Miss USA turned model-actress, a stallion booty is “a nice, round, toned, firmed behind.” As someone who’s been exercising for 30 years, Moore knows exactly how to achieve that look: She lies facedown or gets on all fours, and then pulses, kicks and lifts her legs until her backside burns. And when it starts to hurt? “I think about how good I’m going to look on the red carpet or when I’m naked,” Moore says. The secret to a really great butt, she says, is to think about the total package. “Everything needs to be proportioned and toned. That means you have to work out the entire body,” says Moore, who strives to maintain a flat tummy and small waist to complete her ideal “Jessica Rabbit” figure. Her DVD’s three 20-minute bootycentric routines (with increasing difficulty) are sandwiched between a car-

Two new yoga DVDs provide a sneak peek at real attractions coming to the area.

Move It Kenya Moore lets personal trainer Nikki Veal handle most of the instructor duties on the DVD. But the Real Housewife takes over when it’s time to demonstrate her signature moves.

Giddy Up. On all fours, shift your weight forward, thrusting your hips and squeezing your legs. “It reminds me of riding a horse,” Moore says of the thigh exercise. “It’s fun.” Stallion Kickback (above). Standing up, lift up a knee, put it down, then lunge back. That’s the level-one version. “We can get more intense,” says Moore, who makes it tougher by omitting the break between the lift and the lunge.

dio warm-up and an abs-focused cooldown. That combination, Moore says, is suited for all levels of exercisers — that includes guys, who often neglect their rear ends. Moore hopes to boost the intensity on a future release: “I didn’t want to scare people with my first DVD. I didn’t want them to quit one minute in.” Maybe by then Moore will have also launched her line of activewear, which is still in the works. She wants to develop apparel that is sexy and colorful and hides perspiration. (“I don’t like to see sweat.”) Sounds like a good plotline for next season. VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

The largest chain of yoga studios already has a location in Bethesda. Now get ready for CorePower Yoga’s first studio in D.C. It opens in GEORGETOWN (1055 Thomas Jefferson St. NW) on March 29 — to be followed by another Georgetown branch later this year, according to founder Trevor Tice, who expects to establish 10-20 more studios in the area. “Calorie Blast” is the second DVD in a threepart series being released through Gaiam to introduce the kind of sequences found in CorePower Yoga studios. “It’s not as rigid as Bikram, but there’s a very specialized skeleton we follow in every class,” Tice says. One way your home practice will likely be different: temperature. It’s 80 degrees in CorePower Yoga studios.

Canyon Ranch: Yoga for Strength & Energy ($15) You won’t find a desert landscape anywhere near Washington. But the mountains and nature surrounding The Homestead, in HOT SPRINGS, VA., will be just as gorgeous a backdrop for a yoga practice, says instructor Evette Shuk. The Canyon Ranch SpaClub that’s opening at the resort (about a three-hour drive from D.C.) this spring promises to provide an experience in line with the luxury brand. That includes a “movement therapy” program, which will feature outdoor yoga classes. With the DVD, Shuk’s intention was to inspire people to practice more, whether it’s at home or at Canyon Ranch. “We want them to feel not just good, but incredible,” she says.

NOT A FAN

Somebody’s Got to Do It My husband has been unemployed and job hunting forever. He is immensely talented but bad at the nuts and bolts of making things happen and has not been diligent about getting his résumé out there. And now he’s not trying. I make a great salary and I could see him staying at home with kids someday, but I am nowhere near ready to start a family. How do I make him see that we need to jump-start something? WORRIED It sounds like, at best, he’s got a bad case of inertia, and at worst, depression, debilitating anxiety or sagging self-esteem. Here’s a cognitive-behavioral course via newspaper. each day to uphold his part of the bargain. And, in the meantime, he can get better acquainted with what his barriers are: What thoughts are getting in the way of his progress? Does his mood dip, paralyzing him from action? Also worthy of discussion: Are both of you on the same page about goals for your family?

First, ditch the guilt. Your new neighbor doesn’t mesh with what you want in a friendship — or even a backyard barbecue guest — so you’re expected to be civil, but nothing more. Communicate as needed about your children, but don’t feel the need to ask any additional questions. Say hello when he speaks to you, but don’t ask for a breakdown of his weekend. Don’t extend any family invitations, and politely decline any that he offers. (You’ve got out-oftown guests spending the weekend, bowling just isn’t your thing, you have tuba practice — heck, life makes enough excuses even for people we want to see!)

Visit Readexpress.com to see what chef Rock Harper is making for the cook-off.

Digest More Than a Meal A celeb chef cook-off promotes dining on colon-friendly foods People love discussing ever y aspect of food — except where it goes once it’s been chewed up and swallowed, says chef Rock Harper. The D.C.-based “Hell’s Kitchen” champion hopes to change that tonight when he hosts a colonfriendly cook-off. “If you eat well, you’ll live well,” says Harper, who got involved with the debut of the Chris4Life Colon Cancer Foundation’s Eat4Life event when he learned of the serious threat that colon cancer poses. It’s one of the leading causes of cancer deaths nationwide, and the Washington area has the highest colon cancer mortality rate in the country. One way to reduce your risk of colon cancer? Cut back on red meat consumption, says dietician Sarah Waybright (Whyfoodworks.com), who compiled the event’s nutrition guidelines. She told the roster of participating chefs — including Scott Drewno from The Source and “Top Chef” alums Mike Isabella and Carla Hall — that a little is fine, but she recommends no more than a 5-ounce serving. “You can have a great meal

without meat,” Harper says, noting that when his new sausage restaurant, Fat Shorty’s, opens in Clarendon this April, there will be vegetarian and vegan options on the menu. “You can create that same sort of mouth play with other foods, but you need to work at it.”

Details Chris4Life’s Eat4Life cook-off is at 6 p.m. tonight at Crios Modern Mexican (2120 P St. NW). Tickets are $50 and include chef tastings and two drinks. More details are at Chris4life.org/eat4life.

Chefs shouldn’t feel too limited by Waybright’s list of approved ingredients: All fruits, vegetables and whole grains are fair game. That’s because they have fiber, which she describes as “a broom sweeping through your digestive system,” making sure you have regular bowel movements. “At restaurants, sometimes it seems like the vegetables are an afterthought,” Waybright says. “Two pieces of asparagus crisscrossed on a plate are beautiful, but they’re not a serving of vegetables.” The winning dish for the cookoff should be judged both on how it goes down and how it goes out. taken hostage after the enemy infiltrates his secret bunker. If it hits close to home, that’s the point. Director Antoine Fuqua and actor-producer Gerard Butler wanted the events to seem plausible. “I try to find a way to ground the movie in some reality, in something that’s happening in the world, in something that we can all connect to,” Fuqua says. In the film, Secret Service agent

Mike Banning — played by Butler — is tasked with saving the day. Once the favorite handler of President Asher (Aaron Eckhart), Banning is relegated to desk duty after a tragedy involving the first family. But when North Korean terrorists storm the White House, Banning finds himself hiding under the crumbling roof of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. This is Banning’s opportunity

“G.I. Joe: Retaliation” (March 28) Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis are operatives tasked with taking out the enemy Cobra. Trailers suggest that when the president is replaced by an evil doppelganger, the facade of 1600 Penn gets a makeover — black and red curtains with snake eyes. “White House Down” (June 28) Director Roland Emmerich’s name is synonymous with apocalyptic devastation. In addition to “The Day After Tomorrow” and “2012,” Emmerich directs Tatum (above) in an “Olympus”-like movie about a Secret Service agent saving the day. (T WP)

to right his reputation. All he has to do is kill the terrorists roaming the White House corridors and find a way into the impenetrable bunker. And while, according to Faqua’s research, the attack is plausible, he says Washingtonians shouldn’t live in fear of impending doom. “[It’s] just sort of a scenario of what could happen,” he says. “We’re in good hands with our guys. They know what they’re doing.”

OF SCOTLAND, HE RELATES TO THE GRAVITY OF AN ATTACK ON THE WHITE HOUSE

STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“It is the most powerful building in the world, and it’s the symbol and beacon of freedom.”

Space Oddity: Thirty Seconds to Mars wanted the announcement for its next album (May’s “Love Lust Faith + Dreams”) to be out of this world. And that’s where the album’s first single debuted. “Up in the Air” was sent, via rocket, to the International Space Station on March 1. It will be released today on Earth. A conversation between astronaut Tom Marshburn, at ISS, and singer Jared Leto will be available on the band’s and NASA’s websites. (AP)

Staging Her Second Act Former U.K. child star Charlotte Church, now 27, plots a comeback with U.S. audiences

Backstory

In terms of chronological age, Charlotte Church — at just 27 — is probably too young for a comeback tour and album. But launching a second act can be tough when you charmed the world at 12. The British singer has emerged from her basement studio in Wales — a hangout for local songwriters and musicians — with a wealth of new material she’s releasing in the United States on CD and showcasing at live performances in New York and Los Angeles. “I’ve been waiting a long time to come back to the States,” says Church, who released the album “One & Two” last week. Taken from two previously released EPs in Europe, it’s the first of new material from the singer in the U.S. for a decade, in part because she hasn’t had full confidence in her material.

Music

Charlotte Church appears to have taken both musical and style cues from Bjork.

Church, perhaps burdened by the “Voice of an Angel” title of her first smash album, sees America as offering a fresh start. She believes her reputation in Britain has been tarnished by tabloids that covered (and exaggerated) her every growing pain as she moved from cherubic youth into rough adolescence and more tranquil adulthood.

One & Two Charlotte Church

Her new material is difficult to describe. Church has moved away from straight-ahead commercial pop, which didn’t serve her partic-

As a 12-year-old, Charlotte Church sold millions of records (especially her debut, “Voice of an Angel”) and performed live for a president and a pope before being laid low by a nowin confrontation with Britain’s tabloid press, the release of some mediocre pop material and a not-so-great reality TV show in the U.K. (AP)

ularly well, into a less-structured arena. There are traces of Bjork and others in her phrasing, and the instrumentation varies from song to song; the purity of her soprano voice provides the unifying factor. As a kid, Church sailed through concerts with breezy confidence. It’s gotten harder as she’s matured. “I’m getting more nervous as I get older,” she says. “When I was really young I was totally fearless. As I’ve gotten older I’m more scared, it matters more. It just means the world to me now.” GREGORY K ATZ (AP)

Tony’s Home Again: The Tony Awards is going back to the place where the Rockettes high-kick it. The ceremony honoring Broadway’s best will be broadcast live by CBS from Radio City Music Hall on June 9. Nominations will be announced April 30. For the past two years, the show was held at the smaller Beacon Theater because of Cirque du Soleil’s staging of “Zarkana” at Radio City. The Tony Awards were at Radio City from 1997 to 2010. (AP)

All You Can Binge Watch Television Comcast is planning a television “watchathon” from March 25 to 31, collaborating with TV networks to make entire series available for free on demand. The plan encourages binge viewing, where people spend hours catching up on TV shows, and serves as a grand look into what may be the future of TV viewing. More than 3,500 TV episodes from about 30 TV networks (including premium cable channel HBO, which airs “Game of Thrones,” above) will be available. Broadcast networks generally make only four recent episodes of a series available on-demand. For the promotion, all of a current season’s episodes will be available. (AP)

A Musical Mishmash Sometimes you want more out of a live band than a bunch of dudes standing around with guitars. You want some horns, you want some dancehall, you want a klezmer clarinetist. She’s a Gem Jewel is 38 years old, which we guess means she’s not premature in releasing a greatest hits album, even if to us she’ll always be that girl with a guitar who lived in her car once. She’ll be in D.C. tonight — and, yes, since it’s a greatest hits tour, we think it’s a good bet you’ll hear “You Were Meant for Me.” Lisner Auditorium, 730 21st St. NW; Tue., 8 p.m., $35$60; 202-994-6800, Lisner .org. TV tonight lookout

Will They? Probably. ‘New Girl’ considers making roomies Nick and Jess a couple The recent gasp-worthy FOX 9:00 lip-lock between “New Girl” stars Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson was the juicy plot twist that fans and the show’s cast have been waiting for. “Personally, I’ve wanted it to happen,” Johnson says. “I think the idea of what’s going to happen between them is just kind of fun right now. There’s a lot of mileage there that we’re starting to explore.”

FOX

Comedy

Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson play up the tension between their characters.

Johnson, who plays Nick, the surly roommate of Deschanel’s Jess, says audience reaction has been overwhelmingly positive and imme-

diate. The actor racked up roughly 20,000 new Twitter followers after the kiss aired Jan. 29. Deschanel says she was just as

surprised as fans to see the characters’ on-again, off-again chemistry finally come to fruition. “I was really excited because they kept us apart for a really long time,” she says. “I was just happy that they went there, because there’s actually more possibility for storylines.” On tonight’s episode, Jess finally figures out her feelings toward Nick and struggles to tell him – until she’s hopped up on pain medication. So will Jess and Nick’s new romance reach the iconic status of other TV love stories such as Ross and Rachel of “Friends” or Sam and Diane of “Cheers?” Johnson is certainly hoping so. “‘Cheers’ is my show,” he says. “I’m copping it as much as I can, and I watch it on a regular basis just to see what they did.” NICOLE E VAT T (AP)

If this seems familiar, it is: Fox aired the similar “Stars in Danger: The High Dive” earlier this year. (UNIVERSAL UCLICK)

Sudoku

MEDIUM

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) If ever there was a good day to attempt two or more things at once, this is it. Time is short. You have much to accomplish. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may have to reorganize your day at the last minute as a result of news that carries with it a new and exciting opportunity. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Someone is waiting for you today — though you’re not sure where or why. Clues come to you one at a time, making solving this mystery difficult. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can expect a lengthy process when you enter into a new endeavor with a friend or loved one. You can have a great deal of fun, however. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Your work may be interrupted several times today by those who come to you with lastminute requests for assistance.

Yesterday’s Solution

Yesterday’s Solution

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re nearing the halfway point of a major personal endeavor. Now is the time to look back and assess your progress — honestly. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) What you do today is likely to have a lasting impact on your home life — your finances, in particular. Good news and bad news both arrive. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The quality, not the quantity, of what comes your way today will come under question. It simply may not be what you expected.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Comics

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may be sent on a secret mission of sorts. Remember that success or failure depends on the details. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You must focus on the task at hand today with renewed attention and commitment. Those in charge will not accept subpar performance.
