A student at the University of Maine at Augusta is in trouble for taking his five baby pet alligators inside a taxicab. The pet reptiles began crawling around the cab Tuesday after a box tipped over. Yifan Sun, 20, who is from China, received a summons because it’s illegal to keep alligators as pets in Maine. Sun told police he kept the alligators as pets and was taking them with him to visit someone in Waterville. (AP)
A Michigan State University student has received dozens of calls after posting a dating résumé online. Joey Adams, 21, created the résumé after asking out a girl who eventually rejected him. “She asked if I had a dating résumé,” he said. “I didn’t have one, so she told me no.” Adams’ résumé lists “rollerblading” and “crying during ‘Marley & Me’ ” as some of his skills. He’s since been invited to several formals, some of which he plans to attend. (AP)

The zoo said its male panda, Tian Tian, is in full rut and exhibiting restless behavior, which is normal. SMITHSONIAN If you think you can wait a few months to avoid the long lines and crowded galleries at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, you’ll need a new strategy. Those lines are not disappearing anytime soon. “I don’t see the lines getting any shorter,” founding director Lonnie Bunch said in an interview, days before the museum marked its six-month anniversary. “I don’t think we’re going to have those moments when I can bounce a basketball through the museum — at least not for the next three or four or five years.” Interest in the long-awaited museum shows no sign of decline. Metro OKs higher fares and reduced service Peak rail cost will go up a dime; off-peak and bus will rise 25 cents TRANSPORTATION Metro’s board gave final approval Thursday to a series of fare hikes and service cuts as part of an austere fiscal 2018 budget aimed at easing the transit agency’s financial struggles. Beginning July 1, peak-period rail fares will increase 10 cents, with $2.25 as the new minimum and $6 as the maximum one-way fare. Off-peak fares will increase
a quarter; bus fares also will increase 25 cents — up to $2. Riders also will wait longer for trains, with trains arriving about eight minutes across most of the system, with higher frequencies downtown. But there will be fewer trains overall on five of six lines. The changes were approved largely as drafted in an October proposal, but the revised $1.8 billion spending plan also includes a series of small-scale changes aimed at easing the pain for riders, dozens of whom spoke out at a public hearing earlier this year. Metro is maintaining $5 million

Officials in Prince William County said they received several calls in late February about bear sightings in two areas in Manassas, including near Balls Ford Road and along Sudley Road. The Prince William County Police Department said in a statement, “Bears are emerging from their winter dens hungry and on the move in search for food.” It added: “This primal need can cause them to conflict with homeowners and residents using parks and other unimproved areas.” Experts said bears are mostly active and “very hungry” from late March through May. worth of bus routes originally slated for elimination, and will keep the price for weekly bus passes at $17.50. While train frequencies will be reduced during peak periods, the revised budget eliminates reductions in off-peak service. The proposal originally called for off-peak headways to stretch to 15 minutes. The austerity budget aims to close a $290 million anticipated revenue shortfall. Masood’s convictions between 1983 and 2003 included assault, weapons possession and public order offenses, London police said. LONDON Authorities on Thursday identified a 52-year-old Briton as the man who mowed down pedestrians and stabbed a policeman to death outside Parliament, saying he had a long criminal record and once was investigated for extremism — but was not currently on a terrorism watch list. As lawmakers returned to work a day after the rampage killed four people and injured at least 30, British Prime Minister Theresa May vowed: “We are not afraid.” “Today, we meet as normal — as generations have done before us, and as future generations will continue to do,” she said to cheers in the House of Commons. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s attack, which police said was carried out by Khalid Masood, a U.K.-born resident of the West Midlands in central England. Masood plowed a rented SUV into pedestrians on London’s Westminster Bridge, killing a man and a woman and injuring more than 30 people of 11 nationalities. He fatally stabbed a policeman inside the gates of Parliament before being shot to death by an armed officer. The dead were identified as Constable Keith Palmer, 48, a 15-year veteran of the Metropolitan Police; Kurt Cochran,

Police believe the attacker acted alone, May said. Years ago, Masood was “investigated in relation to concerns about violent extremism,” she said, but called him “a peripheral figure.” Home Secretary Amber Rudd denied that the fact that Masood was known to police meant there had been an intelligence failure. GOP delays health-care vote POLITICS House leaders postponed a vote Thursday on their plan to overhaul the nation’s health-care system, casting doubt on whether President Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., can deliver on one of the GOP’s central promises to the voters who placed Republicans in power. Lawmakers and White House officials continued to express confidence that the revisions to the Affordable Care Act would pass by week’s end, and talks resumed soon after leaders announced the postponement. As evening came, members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus filed into the office of Ryan, as did White House Chief of Staff Reince Preibus and Trump’s chief strategist, Steve Bannon. Lawmakers also said they expected to begin a floor debate Thursday night, and a White House spokeswoman predicted a vote by Friday morning. The frenzy of activity Thursday laid bare the reality that Trump’s and Ryan’s plan for a

Freedom Caucus chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., speaks to reporters Thursday after a meeting to discuss the health-care bill on Capitol Hill.
New CBO analysis A new analysis by the Congressional Budget Office released Thursday showed that changes House leaders made to the GOP health-care bill on Monday don’t alter a projection that 24 million more Americans would be uninsured by 2026 under the bill. In addition, the updated bill would cut the deficit by $150 billion over the next decade — nearly $200 billion less than the earlier version of the bill. It was unclear how the new CBO score would affect legislative support for the bill. (TWP)

White veteran charged with murder as hate crime
Governor to approve strictest DUI limit in U.S.
A white Army veteran accused of randomly killing a black man on the streets of New York by stabbing him with a sword was charged Thursday with murder as a hate crime. One prosecutor called the killing an “act of terrorism.” (AP)
Utah’s governor announced Thursday that he will sign legislation lowering the blood alcohol limit for most drivers to .05 percent from .08 percent, giving the predominantly Mormon state the strictest DUI threshold in the country. vote on Thursday had unraveled over the course of the day, after Freedom Caucus members had rejected Trump’s offer to strip a key set of mandates from the nation’s current health-care law. Freedom Caucus chairman Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said House leaders were still seeking another 30 to 40 votes in order to pass the bill: “I’m desperately trying to get to yes,” he said. opposition. As of Thursday afternoon, 37 House Republicans had announced their opposition to the American Health Care Act. House leaders confirmed that they still lacked sufficient support. But White House deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders framed the delay as being “for scheduling purposes, so nobody has to be up at 3 o’clock in the morning for a vote. “We’re very confident that the bill will pass tomorrow morning,” she said, adding that while the White House remains open to tweaking the measure, “this is the bill, this is the vote.” Trump devoted much of his day to personally lobbying members, meeting with conservatives and offering to remove “essential benefits” including mental health treatment and maternity and newborn care from the proposal. Lawmakers who support that say it would reduce premium costs for Americans. But Freedom Caucus members have asked to eliminate more — including language that bars companies from setting insurance rates based on a person’s sex, medical condition, genetic condition or other factors. New research could change dino family tree SCIENCE Tyrannosaurus Rex could be on the move as a new study proposes a massive shake-up of the dinosaur family tree. Scientists who took a deeper look at dinosaur fossils suggest a different evolutionary history for dinosaurs, moving theropods such as T. Rex to a new branch of the family tree. The revised dinosaur tree makes more sense than the old one, initially designed more than a century ago based on hip shape, said Matt Baron, a paleontology doctoral student at the University of Cambridge. He is the lead author of the study in Wednesday’s journal Nature. Baron and colleagues looked at 450 characteristics of 75 dinosaur species, using computer simulations to group together those with similar characteristics, creating tens of thousands of potential dinosaur family trees. The proposed one combines 80 scenarios, he said. Dinosaurs are split into two groups. One group has bird-like hips and is called Ornithischia, which includes the stegosaurus. The group with reptile-like hips is called Saurischia, and includes the brontosaurus. Theropods, which include T. Rex and the type of dinosaurs that later evolved into birds, were considered an offshoot from the brontosaurus group. The new study moves them to the group that includes the stegosaurus, but on a different branch. SETH BORENSTEIN (AP)

Schumer to just say ‘no’ Senate minority leader vows to use filibuster to try to block Gorsuch’s SCOTUS confirmation
Intel committee gets an apology from chairman
GOP’s decision last year to block consideration of Judge Merrick Garland, Obama’s choice to replace the late Antonin Scalia. After two days of answering senators’ questions, Gorsuch was not present on Thursday as civil rights leaders, conservative activists, professors, judges and former clerks debated whether he belonged on the high court. Opponents expressed concern about Gorsuch’s record on civil liberties, election laws and women’s reproductive rights. Gorsuch’s approach “reflects a narrow view of civil rights and a deep skepticism of protecting those rights in the courtroom,” said Kristen Clarke, head of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Gorsuch’s former law clerks and other attorneys countered criticism that as an appellate judge he has favored corporations and employers over individuals. They cited his sympathy and respect for litigants and rulings to protect the rights of religious minorities and prisoners.
POLITICS House Intelligence Committee Democrats said Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., apologized to them Thursday during a closeddoor meeting for his handling of revelations about surveillance that may have been collected about President Trump and his associates during the transition. Nunes’ apology was “generic,” Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., a member of the Intelligence Committee, said on CNN. Democrats assailed Nunes Wednesday after he went first to the press, then to the White House and then to the press again before consulting with colleagues about what he said was fresh intelligence about the president and his campaign aides. On Thursday, Nunes said it was a “judgment call” to personally brief Trump before speaking with his Intelligence Committee colleagues, who are investigating allegations that Russia interfered in the 2016 elections as well as suspected links between Trump aides and the Kremlin. Some Democrats viewed Nunes’ actions as an attempt to deflect attention from Monday’s congressional hearing, at which FBI Director James Comey denied Trump’s claim that President Obama had wiretapped him. Said one Democrat: “This looks like the president got in hot water over his wiretapping claim, and the White House had to find a way to give him an off-ramp.”

POLITICS Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation hearings ended Thursday on a confrontational note, with Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., vowing a filibuster that could complicate Gorsuch’s confirmation and lead to an overhaul in the way the U.S. Senate conducts its business. Schumer said he will vote no on President Trump’s nominee, and asked other Democrats to join him in blocking an up-ordown vote on Gorsuch. “If this nominee cannot earn 60 votes … the answer isn’t to change the rules. It’s to change the nominee,” he said. Among recent Supreme Court nominees, President Barack Obama’s choices of Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan each received more than 60 votes. It is not clear that Democrats have the votes to block Gorsuch and to keep Republicans from changing the chamber’s way of doing business. But Schumer’s announcement is likely to further politicize an already divided Congress. In the last 47 years of Supreme Court nominations — spanning the appointments of the 16 most recent justices — only Samuel Alito Jr. was forced to clear the 60-vote procedural hurdle to break a filibuster. In a Senate floor speech, Schumer said that Gorsuch “was unable to sufficiently convince me that he’d be an independent check” on Trump. Schumer’s opposition was widely expected. But Schumer didn’t signal that his entire caucus is joining him in opposition
Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation hearings for Supreme Court ended Thursday.
What’s next in Gorsuch’s confirmation? Following the hearings, the 20-member committee will vote to move Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the full Senate, with a recommendation that the Senate either approve or reject his nomination. (AP/EXPRESS) The full Senate debates the nomination. To filibuster: Any senator may bring debate to a halt by staging a filibuster and refusing to yield the floor. The Democrats say they will do this. To block a filibuster: It takes 60 votes to invoke cloture to end debate and proceed to a final vote. If the cloture vote fails: In a move termed “the nuclear option,” the majority leader can change the rules to require a simple majority to end debate. If either the cloture vote or “nuclear option” is successful: The Senate votes. It takes 51 votes to confirm Gorsuch; Republicans have a 52-48 majority. If there are 51 or more votes: Gorsuch is confirmed to the high court. If there are fewer than 51 votes: Gorsuch is rejected and President Trump must find a new nominee for the Supreme Court vacancy.
— a sign that he is leaving political space for certain Democrats to find ways to work with Republicans, if necessary. In addition to Schumer, Sens. Thomas R. Carper, D-Del., and Robert Casey, D-Pa., also announced on Thursday that they would filibuster Gorsuch. Both are up for re-election next year. Senior Republicans have vowed that Gorsuch will be

Hacker tied to Jewish threats ISRAEL Israeli police on Thursday arrested a 19-year-old hacker who they said was the main suspect in a wave of bomb threats against Jewish community centers and institutions in the United States and several other countries. The surprising arrest of the Jewish man, who holds dual Israeli and American citizenship, came after a trans-Atlantic
investigation involving the FBI and other international agencies. Earlier this month, U.S. authorities arrested a former journalist from St. Louis, Juan Thompson, for allegedly threatening Jewish organizations and charged him with one count of cyberstalking. Israeli police described the local man as the primary suspect in the wave of threats. The hacker’s motives were still unclear. “He’s the guy who was behind the JCC threats,” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said, referring to the scores of anonymous threats phoned in to
Jewish community centers in the U.S. and Canada since January. Israeli newspaper Haaretz said the man also is likely behind a bomb threat at a Jewish institution in New Zealand in 2016. Police in New Zealand identified the IP address as originating from Israel, and the FBI handed over the information to the Israeli police. The man appeared briefly in court in Israel, covering his face around reporters. His lawyer, Galit Bash, said her client had a “very serious medical condition” that might have affected his behavior. THREE POINTERS
Mid-major candidates
End of an era
Georgetown could opt for an expensive, splashy hire to replace John Thompson III and restore the faith of its fans. But the Hoyas would be wise to mine a smaller school for their coach. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)
to appear in a Final Four, but since then Georgetown has not advanced out of the first weekend in the NCAA Tournament. The search for a replacement will begin immediately, DeGioia said. It’s unclear if any candidates have emerged as frontrunners for the position, which has been held either by a member of the Thompson family or Thompson Jr.’s staff since 1972. “I am grateful to fans of Georgetown for their tremendous support,” Thompson III said in a statement released through his agent, David Falk. “Georgetown basketball has been a part of my life since 1972, which makes this moment even more impactful, but I look forward to my next chapter.” Thompson’s exit follows multiple player departures from Georgetown. Most recently, guard L.J. Peak decided to forego his senior year after signing with an agent and declaring for the NBA draft, according to people familiar with the situation. Peak (16.3 points per game) was the Hoyas’ second leading scorer after starting all 32 games. He becomes the fourth player to leave the team this season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL John Thompson III will not be back as coach of the Georgetown men’s basketball team, university President Jack DeGioia announced in a statement Thursday. The move comes a little more than two weeks after the Hoyas finished with a 14-18 record, their second losing season in a row. It was the third time in four year they missed the NCAA Tournament. Students, alumni and others within the fan base had called for Thompson’s dismissal from the program, which had previously not experienced a sub-.500 season since 199899, when the team transitioned away from Thompson’s father, the Hall of Fame coach John Thompson Jr. DeGioia’s statement said he informed the younger Thompson of the decision not to retain him with “profound regret and deep appreciation” and that the school’s “tradition of excellence will forever be inextricably linked with John and his family.” Thompson III, 51, spent 13 seasons at Georgetown, directing the Hoyas to the Final Four in 2007. He had been one of two active coaches in the Big East

After 13 years with the program his father built, John Thompson III is fired as coach at Georgetown Junior forward Trey Mourning announced he was transferring last week. The seldomused backup is the son of former Georgetown standout Alonzo Mourning, who played under Thompson Jr. Junior forward Isaac Copeland transferred to Nebraska after playing in just seven games and sitting out the remainder of the first semester. In August, junior forward Paul White announced he would be transferring, eventually winding up at Oregon. The Hoyas had been awaiting the arrival of highly regarded recruit Tremont Waters next season, but the point guard reopened his recruitment process after recently decommitting from Georgetown amid uncertainty over Thompson’s status. Thompson had acknowledged fan frustration with his final season, which included consecutive losses to rebuilding teams DePaul and St. John’s. Georgetown finished in ninth place out of 10 teams in the conference this season and has lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in three of its past five appearances.

Nats’ rotation falls into place Strasburg likely to start on opening day ahead of Gonzalez, Scherzer NFL
Free agent fits are still available for the Redskins
The Nationals haven’t announced an opening day starter, but Stephen Strasburg is the likely choice.
Baseball Classic semifinal. He still needs to build up, but is on the same schedule as Gonzalez, who threw in the Nationals’ Grapefruit League game that day. Erick Fedde pitched Thursday against the Mets, presumably in Roark’s spot. If Roark returned to assume that spot the next time through the rotation, he would be on an every-five-days schedule to make his first start in the fourth game of the season, the Friday of opening week — by

Report: Johnny Manziel met with Saints’ Payton
Appeals court overturns conviction of ex-player
New Orleans still needs a backup quarterback for Drew Brees, which sets up an intriguing report from NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. He tweeted Thursday that Saints coach Sean Payton was spotted having breakfast during Super Bowl week with Johnny Manziel, who washed out of the NFL a little over a year ago. The two reportedly discussed a return to football. Manziel, 24, told ESPN in January that he is sober. (TWP)
An appeals court in Waco, Texas, overturned the sexual assault conviction of former Baylor football player Sam Ukwuachu, ruling Wednesday that text messages between the woman he was convicted of assaulting and her friend shouldn’t have been excluded from the testimony in the 2015 trial. The court ordered that a new trial be held for the former defensive standout. (AP)
which time the Nationals should have time to get him where he needs to be. Joe Ross’ turn wouldn’t pop up until the next weekend. All of that, of course, could change. The one sure thing seems to be Strasburg starting on opening day, something he did every year from 2012 to 2014. Since then, Scherzer has taken the ball first, something he won’t be ready to do this year despite a strong showing in his Grapefruit
League debut Wednesday. “Whoever it’s gonna be, it’s gonna be great,” Scherzer said. “We’ve got a great team. … I’ve been on the sidelines before watching other pitchers pitch. It’s not the end of the world to me.” Strasburg, who has pitched to a 2.25 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 20 opening day innings, will almost certainly get his fourth career opening day start this season. NATIONALS The Nationals tend to get a little squirmy talking about the future. They will not, for example, name an opening day starter before they absolutely have to. What if something happens that requires things to change? Manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday he wouldn’t yet name a starter for the April 3 opener against the Marlins in Washington. But with Max Scherzer back in the fold and Tanner Roark soon to follow, the Nationals’ rotation is now lined up. If everything holds — and again, it might not, so don’t hold them to it — Stephen Strasburg’s turn would fall on opening day, a week from Monday. Gio Gonzalez’s turn would fall on that Wednesday, the Nationals’ second game of the season. Scherzer’s turn, should all go well with the healed stress fracture in the ring finger on his right hand, would come up that Thursday, the third game of the season. After that, the Nationals have decisions to make. Roark threw 50 pitches in his start for the U.S. in Tuesday night’s World
We’re now two weeks into NFL free agency, but a few impact players are still on the market. The Redskins addressed needs at wide receiver, defensive line and safety, but they could still use quality players at certain positions. MASTER TESFATSION (TWP)
DT Johnathan Hankins Calais Campbell set the D-line market once he signed a four-year, $60 million deal with the Jaguars. Hankins, above, expects to cash in, too. The 25-year-old has been productive in four seasons with the Giants, starting 16 games in 2016 and 2014 but missing seven games in 2015 with a pectoral injury.
ILB Zach Brown The best available player at his position recently switched agents. Are the Redskins willing to cough up the money for the 27-year-old when they can find a cheaper, younger option in the draft? He had 149 tackles and four sacks with Buffalo last year, when he made his first Pro Bowl.
OLB Erik Walden Trent Murphy is looking at a fourgame suspension to start the season, and Preston Smith has been inconsistent during his first two seasons. Walden, 31, has had a quiet career, but he recorded a career-high 11 sacks and three forced fumbles last season with the Colts.

Chance of an upset: 38 percent
Why it could happen: Butler’s résumé is impressive. Including the regular season, it has wins over Villanova (twice), Arizona, Xavier and Cincinnati. As a team, No. 1 North Carolina shoots 56.3 percent near the rim, which could be a problem for the Bulldogs, who rank in the bottom 20 percent defensively in that area (56.5 percent allowed). Butler’s best hope is for 6-foot-7 senior Andrew Chrabascz to be a brick wall in the post, where he allows just 22.6 percent of field goals, and for the Bulldogs to defend in transition.
Why it could happen: The key for the Bruins will be creating turnovers. During the regular season, their defense forced just 16 turnovers per 100 possessions, 315th out of 351 teams. Against No. 6 Cincinnati, they forced 10 turnovers while giving up three, which gave them one of the best turnover ratios in the tournament. The Bruins have already beaten the Wildcats once this season. All eyes will be on UCLA freshman Lonzo Ball, but five of its other players average double figures. Freshman forward T.J. Leaf leads the team with 16.2 points per game.
Why it could happen: In its upset over No. 2 Duke, almost half of South Carolina’s rebounds (15 of 37) came off the offensive glass. But the Gamecocks lose that edge against Baylor, which has the third-highest percent of offensive rebounds (40.0) in the country. Senior Sindarius Thornwell (2.2 steals per game) and the Gamecocks will have to rely on a suffocating defense that had the fourth-highest turnover rate this season (24.5 percent). Stripping the Bears shouldn’t be too difficult: Baylor coughed the ball up 20.5 percent of the time on offense.
Why it could happen: A No. 8 and a No. 4 have met eight times in the Sweet 16 since 1985, and the eighth seed won five times. Since the Big Ten tournament, Wisconsin senior NIgel Hayes is averaging 15.4 points and 9.6 rebounds with three double-doubles, all improvements on his regular-season production. He is at his best in the post (1.02 points per possession, top 10 percent in the country) or going at a defender one on one, when he scores 46 percent of the time. The Gators allow a below average 0.81 points per possession in the post.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Entering his third year as the coach at Oregon, one of the top priorities for Kelly Graves was to assemble a foundational freshman class. Seven scholarships were available, and unlike at his previous stops, Graves had the allure of a Power Five conference to entice recruits.
Countless days spent recruiting on the road have yielded a historic season in Eugene, with the Ducks claiming their first berth in the regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament. Behind contributions from last year’s third-rated recruiting class, 10th-seeded Oregon toppled No. 2 seed Duke 74-65 on

Saturday for the right to face the winner of UConn-UCLA in Monday’s regional final. Oregon’s freshman centerpiece is Sabrina Ionescu, the Pac 12 newcomer of the year, who averages 14.4 points per game and was the No. 1 rated point guard in her class. Another freshman to watch is Ruthy Hebard. The 6-foot-4 forward scored 20 points with 15 rebounds against Duke. Two days earlier, Hebard poured in 23 points against Temple, hitting the go-ahead basket before blocking a shot to seal a 71-70 win. GENE WANG (TWP)
Wall harnesses defense to get offense going WIZARDS With less than two minutes left in the first half of Washington’s 104-100 win over Atlanta on Wednesday, John Wall was scoreless but trying not to be useless. He missed his first eight shots but figured he could at least be of value on defense. When the Hawks’ Taurean Prince grabbed Otto Porter Jr.’s errant pass to start a fast break, Wall ran down the forward and threw up an arm for a forceful block from behind. The play, Wizards coach Scott Brooks said after the game, was almost as important as the 22 points Wall turned in during the second half. “I told him earlier this morning, I said, ‘You can dominate the game with your defense and your passing. [It] doesn’t always need to be points from you,’ ” Brooks said. Wall made 6 of 13 field goal attempts in the second half, added 10 assists and had four steals to balance out four turnovers. He posted his 46th double-double of the season, three away from the career-high 49 he tallied last year. Bradley Beal said that a point guard who can make the most out of a bad start is exactly what the Wizards need as the playoffs inch closer. Including a home game against the Nets on Friday (7, CSN), Washington has 11 games left in the regular season. “When we stay aggressive,” Beal said, “we’re a tough team to guard.” AVA WALLACE (TWP)

e-cluttering is the process of removing unnecessary items from an overcrowded or untidy place. When there are months or even years of build-up, the task can seem overwhelming, especially in an apartment, but these tips will make the process less stressful and more successful.
D
A Spot for Papers Setting a spot aside for papers will make cleaning easier as papers usually account for much of the clutter in an apartment. Make sure to have one pile for papers you are keeping and one for papers you are tossing. For the future, having an in-box tray or spot in your apartment where you put important papers will help keep track of them
and prevent your home from becoming messy.
No-Clutter Zone Have a no-clutter zone, such as your kitchen table, a counter, or the 3-foot perimeter around the couch, where nothing not in use can be placed. After maintaining the rule for this section, gradually expand the no-clutter zone each day until the entire apartment is made a no-clutter zone.
Buy After Organizing Don’t go overboard when buying those pretty boxes, bins and baskets you see at the store. They are of no use at home unless they fit a space (under the bed, on the shelf, in the closet, etc.). It is better to clean out your apartment and assess what
containers you really need before shopping. More can be purchased later, but you don’t want to have the apartment being cluttered by a bunch of empty containers.
cluttered. You should start by taking out any clothes you have not worn in awhile. Donate what you don’t want and organize the remaining clothes by style or color to make things easier to find.
De-Clutter Gradually You don’t need to set a whole day aside to de-clutter the entire apartment. Not everybody has the energy and/or focus to spend hours organizing. Plus, it can make you less efficient and increase frustration. It is much better to spend 3 hours working on a defined space or project. Having a small goal will motivate you, and you won’t get burned out by the process.
Clean Out the Closet In many homes, the closet is one of the places that ends up the most
Do it Regularly De-cluttering is an on-going process, which means you aren’t done once you’ve organized the apartment. Even if you have created an efficient and logical system for managing and processing incoming and outgoing items, clutter still happens. Decluttering regularly will make the task more manageable and will keep your apartment looking great. By following these simple tips you’ll be able to get your apartment neat and tidy in no time. ■ By Guest Blogger for Apartment Showcase

‘Wilson’
Wherever you’re going, just stop right there, Jake Gyllenhaal. You know the big, bad monster is going to get you.
Whatever it is, it’s alive ‘Life’ takes the conventions of a monster movie and turns it into a wild space tale
FILM REVIEW The film “Life” is a test-tube baby, born from a blend of oldschool monster-movie DNA and state-of-the-art digital effects. At times silly — yet surprisingly satisfying — this tale of sci-fi suspense and horror, set in the weightless environment of the International Space Station, gives Emmanuel Lubezki’s vertiginous “Gravity” cinematography a run for its money, with dizzyingly deft camera choreography and long, unbroken takes shot by Seamus Garvey that may remind viewers of his work on “Atonement.” In this floating environment, an international crew of six astronauts has been tasked with retrieving soil samples collected from the planet Mars, in the nottoo-distant future. As the film’s title implies — and as the trailers
make explicit — that Martian dirt contains a microscopic organism that, when fed oxygen and stimulated by an electric prod, begins to develop so quickly — both in motor skills and what might be called “personality” — that the British microbiologist examining it, Hugh (Ariyon Bakare), gives it a name: Calvin (suggested by a child back on Earth via video uplink). The CGI critter — which goes from looking like a wad of colorless, chewed-up gummy bears to a wet orchid to an angry squidlike thing — quickly has the dwindling supply of astronauts running scared, from one airlocked pod to the next, as they try to contain and/or kill it. But Calvin, who can hold its breath for long periods, and whose every cell is both “a muscle, a brain and an eye,” as Hugh puts

it, prolongs their extermination efforts, at one point even running around on the outside of the station. While this ever more nervewracking game of cat-and-mouse is well calibrated by director Daniel Espinosa, the film’s real interest derives from the human interactions. The excellent cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as something of a shell-shocked ex-military doctor, whose wartime service has left him slightly misanthropic; Rebecca Ferguson as a quarantine-obsessed CDC scientist; Ryan Reynolds as a

wise-cracking engineer/space cowboy; Hiroyuki Sanada as the jaded old-timer; and Olga Dihovichnaya as the crew’s nononsense Russian commander. The sometimes conflicting dynamics of their individual temperaments lead occasionally to poor decision-making. While this may be bad for their health, it’s great for the movie. Like its antecedents in more terrestrial horror, “Life” depends on characters going into the basement, as it were, when everyone in the audience knows darn well they should not. The screenplay (by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick of “Deadpool”) limits its actual japes to Reynolds’ dialogue, opting instead for a more sober overall approach to storytelling. “Life” has cool effects, real suspense and a sweet twist. It ain’t rocket science, but it does what it does well — one might say, with a kind of genius. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

R, 94 min.
Based on the character in Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel, Wilson (Woody Harrelson) is a middle-aged misanthrope who learns that his ex-wife (Laura Dern) did not have an abortion after she left him years ago, as he believed. Wilson comes off as a sour-to-the-point-oftoxic bellyacher, and thus his insistent anti-charisma kills whatever inherent charm his story, about bonding with his long-lost daughter, possesses. M.O.
‘CHiPS’ R, 100 min.
“CHiPs” is shambling, raunchy and nothing like the goofy TV show it’s based on. Dax Shepard plays a motorcycle cop who gets partnered with an undercover FBI agent (Michael Pena) looking for dirty cops. The screenplay by Shepard just isn’t clever enough to satirize the original. He co-opts a title, throws in an Erik Estrada cameo and hopes fans will be satisfied. STEPHANIE MERRY (TWP)

“Do you guys feel dumb in these plastic helmets?” one kid asks. “Yup,” they respond in unison.
CBS is renewing 18 shows for the 2017-2018 season
Haim Saban, creator of the 1993 “Power Rangers” show as well as the reboot film, told Variety he has five more movies mapped out. “We already have a six-movie story arc,” Saban said. “Today’s young audience is much more sophisticated. …Think about movies like ‘Jungle Book’ and ‘Arrival.’ The effects are mindboggling. So does the young audience expect more? You bet they do — and they will have it.”
CBS said it’s bringing back 18 of its current series for the 2017-2018 season. Announced Thursday, those pickups include six comedies, nine dramas, the reality series “Survivor” and newsmagazines “60 Minutes” and “48 Hours.” Returning scripted shows include “The Big Bang Theory,” “Blue Bloods,” “Madam Secretary” and “Mom,” plus freshman series “Bull,” “Kevin Can Wait,” “MacGyver,” “Man With a Plan” and “Superior Donuts.” (AP)
The reboot of the ‘90s kids’ show needs more action, less teen angst Film Review There’s a question every piece of intellectual property needs to ask itself before a new version is made: Just how seriously should we treat the source material? In the case of “Power Rangers” — the original a weekend morning show that cobbled together shameless merchandising goals, dubbed Japanese action footage and sanitized high school shenanigans — they went with “quite seriously.” And that might not have been the best call for a story that still involves a villain named Rita Repulsa who wanders around town eating gold. But we’ll get to her later. Even with such campy morsels to play with, the vibe director Dean Israelite seems to be going for is “Friday Night Lights” meets “Fantastic Four,” which actually isn’t totally awful at the beginning, as we meet the five
high school students destined to wield their newly found superpowers to save the world. There’s the star football player, Jason (Dacre Montgomery), who’s rebelling against his good-boy image; the once-popular girl Kimberly (Naomi Scott); the autistic boy Billy (RJ Cyler); the mysterious new girl Trini (Becky G.); and the adventurous Zack (Ludi Lin). They’re angsty teens with secrets and zero perspective, so imagine how weird things get when they happen to be hanging out in a restricted mining area, stumble upon some jewels, get into a would-be fatal car crash and

Growing pains — the mighty morphin’ kind
wake up with the ability to crush iPhones and scale mountains. Elizabeth Banks, whose Rita Repulsa devours every piece of gold she can find, is actually fairly fun in the part. In one scene, she snivels and sneers with campy glee under the pounds of zombie makeup as she fiendishly terrorizes shoppers at a jewelry store like she’s the only one who understands what movie she’s in. But boy, does this film overstay its very conditional welcome. Israelite, who also made the occasionally riveting foundfootage, time-travel pic “Project Almanac,” gives the images some grit and visual interest. But the story just spends too much time on the maudlin coming-of-age and team-building. A little less therapy and a little more action would have gone a long way in the mushy middle section. Much like the teens at the center, “Power Rangers” goes through some awkward growing pains in real time trying to figure out what movie it wants to be or even should be. Lindsey Bahr (AP)

‘Justice League’
EXPECTED RELEASE: June 2
SUMMARY: Teasing the new trailer set to drop this weekend, the 15-second appetizer shows Aquaman (Jason Momoa) standing in front of a really, really big wave. Then Batman hands him his trident. Then he does Aquaman stuff. Then you get a tiny glimpse of the Fab Five looking superhero-y. Tune in Saturday to see more teasing. K.P.K.
EXPECTED RELEASE: Nov. 17
SUMMARY: You think you’ll show the trailer to your
8-year-old, record his reaction, type it up and it’ll be adorable. But his response to scenes from the film (based on the wildly popular books) is to just gasp and then repeatedly mutter, “I love it.” Thanks for all the help, kid. NOT KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY’S SON (EXPRESS)

“I bet you didn’t wake up this morning thinking the most masterful burn of the day would come from Kristi Yamaguchi.”
He is always standing in his spot with a big smile, a greeting and a positive spin on any headline.
@ELCUSH reacting to the tweet heard around the world from Kristi Yamaguchi. The former skating star tweeted Monday before her old Olympic teammate Nancy Kerrigan’s appearance on “Dancing With the Stars”: “Can’t wait to see you grace that ballroom floor, break a leg!” Many found it hard to believe that Yamaguchi would causally say “break a leg,” since Kerrigan is known for having been attacked before the Olympic skating trials in 1994, when she was hit in the knee. Yamaguchi said she had meant no ill will.
I am sure many of my fellow commuters would agree. — Navy Yard Metro rider
Big news in small bites.
@GYALASHNIKOV reacting to
what may have been a veiled announcement by rapper Kendrick Lamar that he has a new album on the way. On Thursday morning, Lamar’s Instagram account was wiped clean, save for a post showing the Roman numeral IV in white on a black background. Fans began speculating on whether it meant his fourth album will be released soon.

“Gonna meditate an hour a day so I can be woke enough for Kendrick’s new album.”
“Or you could put your phone in a front pocket of your pants ... and you never risk sitting on it.” FGOODWIN commenting at theverge.com about a pair of jeans made
by Japanese retailer Muji with a sixth pocket, created especially for phones. The jeans debuted in January, but got some attention Thursday from The Verge, sparking a discussion about whether or not an extra phone pocket is really necessary.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Just hours after TMZ published a report that actresses Nia Long and Taraji P. Henson feuded while filming Season 3 of “Empire,” a representative for Long called the accusations “complete nonsense” in a statement. The site cited sources who claimed Long, who is a recurring star on the Fox drama, was rude to hair and makeup staff, demanding lastminute changes and yelling. The sources said the show’s staff filed an official complaint against Long — a first for the series. Long’s conduct allegedly led to a rift with star Henson, who has not responded to the report.
