PEAK PEEKS: Tourists take in the views of near-peak cherry blossoms along the Tidal Basin in D.C. on Thursday. The blooms officially hit their peak Friday, about a week ahead of the recent 30-year average of around April 1, and 16 days earlier than the peak blooms of the past two years, which happened on April 10.

Man has totally normal reaction to being denied late-night tacos
‘Take my wallet and no one gets hurt. I mean … oh, never mind.’
Pittsfield, Mass., police say a man got so angry when he found out that Taco Bell was closed after 1 a.m. Thursday that he sped off, crashed into an ATM building and knocked himself unconscious. Police say that when no one came to serve Derrick LaForest at the drive-thru, he honked his horn for two minutes until he was told the restaurant was closed, then tore away at high speed, struck a curb, lost control and smashed into the building. (AP)
Investigators say a robber helped them out when he apparently dropped his own wallet with his identification in it as he and two accomplices tried to take money from men outside a Florida bar. Twenty-eight-year-old Devonte Levoris Pace was arrested in Panama City on Tuesday following the armed robberies Jan. 16. Police say the trio walked up to the men, pulled a gun and demanded their wallets. About $600 was stolen. (AP)

page three New life for parasite collection EXHIBITS Anna J. Phillips picked up the old glass jar filled with alcohol and wads of cotton, and she read the label describing the tangled object inside. “Oh,” she said, “this is taenia saginata.” A tapeworm, collected from the intestine of an anonymous person in the District on April 4, 1911. “It’s 21 feet,” she said. “A really great specimen.” Before her at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum Support Center were hundreds of jars and test tubes — some more than a century old — filled with parasites. Tapeworms, roundworms, flatworms and deer liver flukes. Pinworms, thorny-headed worms, thin-necked bladderworms and one large jar of nematodes, with the unfortunate rat they afflicted. Everything was dead and pickled. “Nothing’s infectious,” Phillips had said earlier. “I promise.” And all were part of the country’s historic National Parasite Collection.
MARVIN JOSEPH (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The (noninfectious) miscellany is now under the Smithsonian’s care
Smithsonian research zoologist Anna J. Phillips is helping to sort through the National Parasite Collection at the museum’s support center.
Yes, there is such a thing. One of the largest in the world, although now in some disarray, the collection has just been acquired by the Smithsonian from the Agriculture Department, where it resided for more than 80 years in the basement of a small brick building in Beltsville, Md. Phillips, a research zoologist, and colleague Bill Moser, who coordinated the collection transfer, are sorting through the specimens that the government began collecting in 1892.
“It finally got to the point that we felt that for the safety of the collection … it would be best to put it back in the hands of [the Smithsonian].” STEVEN SHAFER, of the Agriculture Department, on moving the National Parasite Collection
There is a total of about 20 million parasites in fluid lots at the support center in suburban Maryland and on dry slides at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington. “We still are finding out what’s in here,” Phillips said as she stood among the shelves of fluid specimens last month. “It’s so much. We didn’t get a grasp on it when you’re moving massive amounts. … “It’s all officially here. But it’s going to take years to … get everything how we want it, to bring it up to Smithsonian standards.” The collection has long been used by scientists studying livestock and wildlife infections and by other experts studying foodborne pathogens and emerging infectious diseases, she said. The National Parasite Collection is “not the work of any one person,” Phillips said. “There’s been a series of people who have valued this and cared for it. “There’s this huge field of parasitology researchers out there that are contributing to this. “This is the basis for a lot of the knowledge of parasitology in the world,” she said. “A lot of this tracks back to these specimens.” MICHAEL E. RUANE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Arlington gun store opens to big support Nova Armory has drawn opposition from neighborhood groups
PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY
Starbucks gets into the booze scene in NoVa
BILL O’LEARY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
ARLINGTON COUNTY, VA. Arlington County’s first standalone gun shop in modern memory opened Saturday, drawing several dozen supporters from around the region to a fully stocked storefront, while a smaller local group rallied in opposition five blocks away. Nova Armory did brisk business, drawing customers wanting guns, gun vaults, ammunition and cleaning kits, while others sought to win a $500 discount on future purchases. Handguns on display cost anywhere from $249 to $999. Shotguns, rifles and other firearms carried higher price tags. Opening in liberal Arlington “was a struggle,” Dennis Pratte, one of the owners, said after the ribbon-cutting. “There was a time when we were getting so much press that we thought about doing something different or relocating.” But he said supporters from around the country urged him to go forward and promised to support the business. T he crowd — i nclud i ng Pratte’s 16-year-old daughter, “owner-in-training” Lauren Pratte; Del. Richard L. Anderson, R-Prince William; and Second Amendment advocates — expressed pride and satisfaction.

New Va. ethics law ends golf perks for politicians
Customers browse at the controversial gun store, Nova Armory, which opened for business Saturday in Arlington County amid some protests.
“This is my neighborhood, and I’m really excited to have a gun shop here,” said Lee Schalk, a millennial-aged gun owner. “It makes the neighborhood a more well-rounded place.” Suzie Cook, a middle-aged Fairfax County resident browsing the shotguns with her partner, said opponents were “reactionary, as opposed to learning the value of guns in proper hands and used properly.” A group rallying at Lyon Park would probably disagree. Since learning a month ago that the county approved an occupancy permit for the store, they have been trying to stop it. Their options are few in gun-friendly Virginia: The state prohibits localities from regulating firearms dealers, and Nova Armory has all its

permits in order. But that doesn’t mean opponents are giving up. “Like most of the people here, I don’t think it fits in with the character of the neighborhood,” said Julia Young, who attended the rally with her husband and child. She noted that the shop is across the street from a day-care facility and that both Lyon Park and Ashton Heights neighborhood associations overwhelmingly voted to oppose the store’s opening. She and others noted that Pratte backed out of a meeting with the Lyon Park Citizens Association and has declined to identify the principal owner. “Any [store] owner intent on provoking and antagonizing the neighborhood, as he has, would be undesirable,” Young said. The highly caffeinated world of Starbucks soon could become a little more mellow, at least at four locations in the Prince William area. The Seattle-based chain plans to begin selling beer and wine this week at several of its coffeehouses in Northern Virginia. The rollout of new products could take a while, but it will include one store each in Woodbridge, Manassas, Gainesville and Haymarket. The move is part of the addition of what Starbucks calls its “Evenings” menu to existing establishments. The stores will offer a wine selection and craft beers, as well as small plates of food designed to be shared, including items such as artichoke dip or truffle macaroni and cheese. (TWP)

In fire and emergency services, her spending proposal includes $30 million for a council-approved plan to add 30 private ambulances to augment the city’s overworked and underequipped staff. (TWP)

Colts linebacker ordered to pay $1K fine for assault Indianapolis Colts linebacker D’Qwell Jackson was ordered Friday to pay a $1,000 fine for assaulting a pizza deliveryman last year near the U Street corridor. Earlier this month, a D.C. Superior Court judge found Jackson guilty of misdemeanor simple assault in the altercation on Feb. 3, 2015. During the weeklong trial, prosecutors said Jackson, 32, assaulted the driver who parked in Jackson’s private parking spot near his D.C. condominium. Jackson said he acted in self defense. The driver has also filed a $1.5 million lawsuit against Jackson. That civil case is pending. (TWP) ALEXANDRIA

Teenager was shot at Deanwood station Saturday afternoon THE DISTRICT A few hours after the Saturdayafternoon shooting death of a teenager at the Deanwood Metro station during Easter weekend, regular station rhythms resumed Sunday. On Saturday night and Sunday, as police tapped security video and tracked possible witnesses to Metro’s latest violence, travelers on the platform waited for eastbound Orange Line trains headed into Maryland and westbound ones running through D.C. The investigation was continuing Sunday afternoon, said Officer Sean Hickman, a Metropolitan Police Department spokesman. “There’s no arrest as of yet,” he said. The name of the victim, whom officials believe was 15, had not been released, pending notification of family. According to a preliminary

investigation, the teen apparently was involved in a conversation that escalated into an argument. At some point, the other individual is believed to have drawn a gun and fired, police said. The station was mostly quiet Sunday, with a smattering of riders waiting on the platform. Sarah Lewis, 43, uses the Deanwood station, in Northeast Washington, about twice a week. When she heard about the shooting, she said she didn’t have a reaction. “I’m used to this,” she said. “Where I live at, it’s every day.” “I just don’t know how to get to the bottom of the brazenness or the nonchalance of someone carrying that out,” said D.C. Council member Yvette Alexander, DWard 7, of the Deanwood killing. “It’s still hard to just put your arms around a 15- year-old being gunned down in broad daylight, in a public space, where people are all around,” she said. The killing appears to be the 26th in the city this year, about the same number as this time last year. MICHAEL LARIS AND MICHAEL

Pakistani relatives rush to a hospital Sunday in Lahore after a bomb killed 65 people and wounded more than 300.
Pakistan bomb kills 65 during Easter festivities Faction of the Taliban, targeting Christians, claims responsibility ISLAMABAD A breakaway Pakistani faction of the militant Taliban group has claimed responsibility for an Easter Sunday bombing in a park in the eastern city of Lahore that killed 65 people. Ahsanullah Ahsan, spokesman for Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, said that a suicide bomber deliberately targeted the Christian community. The explosion took place near the children’s rides in Gulshan-eIqbal park — which was crowded with Christians celebrating Easter — local police chief Haider Ashraf said. He said the explosion appeared to have been a suicide bombing, but investigations

were ongoing. The attack killed 65 people and wounded over 300, said Deeba Shahnaz, a spokesman for Lahore rescue administration. Punjab’s chief minister Shahbaz Sharif announced three days of mourning and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice, said Zaeem Qadri, a spokesman for the provincial government. The park was manned by police and private security guards, police chief Haider Ashraf said. “We are in a warlike situation and there is always a general threat but no specific threat alert was received for this place,” he added. Schools and businesses in the city will remain closed on Monday, the city’s schools association and the Union of Lahore Traders said. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
held a meeting to assess the security situation in Lahore, according to a government statement. Pakistan’s army chief, Gen. Raheel Sharif, also convened an emergency meeting of the country’s intelligence agencies to begin to track down those responsible for the attacks, said army spokesman Gen. Asim Saleem Bajwa. Salman Rafiq, a health adviser to the Punjab government, called on people to donate blood, saying that many of those wounded were in a critical condition. Vikas Swarup, spokesman for India’s External Affairs ministry, tweeted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi telephoned Pakistani premier Nawaz Sharif to express his deep condolences. He said Modi “underlined the need for uncompromising efforts to fight against terrorism.” ZARAR KHAN (AP)
Archaeologists using ground-penetrating radar on the grave of William Shakespeare said that his skull appears to be missing. Staffordshire University archaeologist Kevin Colls, who led the study at the Stratfordupon-Avon’s Holy Trinity Church in England, said that the finding supports a claim — first made in 1879 but long dismissed as myth — that Shakespeare’s skull was stolen in the 18th century. But Michael Dobson, director of the Shakespeare Institute at the University of Birmingham, doubts the finding. “There wasn’t a huge fashion for robbing literary graves in the 18th century,” he said. After sweep, Sanders plans offensive against Clinton in April 19 vote
Indiana doctors worried about abortion law
ANDY MANIS (AP)
POLITICS Squeezed to make up ground in the Democratic presidential race, Bernie Sanders is preparing to ratchet up his attacks on Hillary Clinton ahead of a New York showdown that could establish how easily the party can pull itself back together for the general election. The Empire State’s April 19 primary looms as potentially determinative: A win by Clinton, who is favored, would further narrow Sanders’ path, while a loss in the state she represented as a senator would embarrass her and hand Sanders a rationale to continue campaigning until the final votes are cast in June. Clinton had a lead of roughly 300 in pledged delegates, but Sanders narrowed the gap Saturday with a sweep of three Western caucuses. In one of the most successful days of his campaign, the senator from Vermont easily won in Alaska, Hawaii and Washington state. To capitalize on his fresh momentum, Sanders plans an aggressive push in New York, modeled after his come-from-behind victory March 8 in Michigan. He intends to barnstorm New York as if he were running for governor. His advisers, spoiling for a brawl, have commissioned polls to show which contrasts with Clinton — from Wall Street

to fracking — could do the most damage to her at home. “We’ll be the underdog, but being the underdog in New York is not the worst situation in politics,” said Tad Devine, the chief strategist for Sanders. “We’re going to make a real run for it.” The intensified approach by Sanders — who also hopes to make up ground in the Wisconsin primary April 5 — comes as Clinton is eager to pivot to the general election. She keenly understands the imperative to unite Democrats for the fall campaign and, thinking that the nomination is nearly locked up, wants to spend the spring building bridges to the Sanders wing. those efforts. Clinton’s advisers are all but urging Sanders to lay off his attacks. Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta noted that Sanders took a more negative turn in
the Midwestern states that voted March 15 — Illinois, Ohio and Missouri — and lost all three. “It didn’t work,” Podesta said. Clinton, her aides and her allies in recent weeks have avoided sharply attacking Sanders, wary of saying anything that would make it harder to engineer an eventual coming together. The Clinton forces have been careful not to be seen as pushing Sanders to quit. A group of pro-Clinton senators recently considered writing an open letter to Sanders saying the time had come for him to end his campaign. But when other Clinton allies in the Senate caught wind of the idea, they persuaded their colleagues to nix it. PHILIP RUCKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

HEALTH Doctors in Indiana are grappling with how the their patients might be affected by the controversial new law blocking women from seeking abortions “solely” because a fetus has Down syndrome or any other disorder. The law, signed last week by Gov. Mike Pence, takes effect July 1. A woman will still be able to legally obtain an abortion in the event of a lethal fetal illness, but would have to tell the state of her choice to end her pregnancy. A doctor, meanwhile, could face a wrongful-death lawsuit by granting an abortion to a woman who requests it after learning of a pregnancy complication. Indianapolis gynecologist Brownsyne Tucker-Edmonds said the law could dissuade physicians from performing a legal medical procedure and, by doing so, imperil their patients’ health. Hal Lawrence, chief executive of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, said the group opposes the law because it could encourage a patient to withhold information from her doctor. A woman who, for example, learned her fetus carried a severe disability, might pursue an abortion from an outof-state provider and then, out of fear, skip follow-up care from her regular doctor. “She shouldn’t be under legal duress when she came back to where she lived,” Lawrence said. “Patients need postpartum or postoperative care.” DANIELLE PAQUETTE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Would-be suicide bomber says Boko Haram took her
The highest-ranking U.S. Navy officer convicted so far in a huge bribery scandal was sentenced Friday to almost four years in prison for selling military secrets to an Asian defense contractor in exchange for prostitutes, stays at luxury hotels and other favors. Capt. Daniel Dusek, former commander of the USS Bonhomme Richard, an amphibious assault ship, received a 46-month prison sentence and was ordered to pay $100,000 in fines and restitution at a hearing in U.S. court in San Diego. He is one of 10 defendants charged so far in perhaps the biggest corruption scandal in Navy history. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Sen. Ted Cruz denied a National Enquirer story that accused him of extramarital affairs and blamed rival Donald Trump for planting “complete and utter lies” in the tabloid. Cruz said Trump hawked a false story that the married Texas senator had sexual relationships with five unidentified women. “This National Enquirer story is garbage,” Cruz said Friday. “It is a smear that has come from Donald Trump and his henchmen.” In a Facebook post, Trump said he had nothing to do with it, adding that The Enquirer was “right about O.J. Simpson, John Edwards, and many others, I certainly hope they are not right about Lyin’ Ted Cruz.” (TWP)
A teenager who surrendered before carrying out a suicide bombing in northern Cameroon has told authorities she was one of 276 girls abducted from a Nigerian boarding school by Islamic extremists nearly two years ago. If confirmed, the development would mark the first news in months of the missing Chibok girls. It has long been feared that some are being used by their Boko Haram abductors to carry out such attacks given the growing number of young, female suicide bombers. The girl, about 15, was with two other teenage girls who also had explosive belts. One fled and one was arrested. (AP)

Brussels probe widens
SYRIA
ISIS ousted from Palmyra
BRUSSELS The investigation into last week’s bombings in Brussels extended farther across Europe on Sunday, after Italian police arrested a new suspect thought to have provided false documents to the Islamic State militants behind recent attacks here and in Paris. The latest arrest adds to an emerging picture of the network that staged some of the worst attacks on European soil since World War II, another striking indication of the reach of ISIS beyond Iraq and Syria. Fears remained heightened across the continent nearly a week after suicide bombers killed at least 31 people at Brussels Airport and in a subway car. Tuesday’s assaults shed light not only on the shortcomings of European security but on the militants’ determination to launch attacks. In central Brussels, widespread anxiety was visible as riot police with shields and white helmets clashed Sunday with hundreds of right-wing hooligans around a memorial site for victims. Police briefly fired water cannons after several hundred men dressed in black, apparently soccer fans, advanced into the area. The fans waved a giant anti-ISIS banner and shouted Nazi slogans. Ten were arrested and two police

officers were injured. One of the participants said the fans were not protesting against Muslims. He said they hoped to show their condemnation of terrorists and of government failures to deal with such threats. Government officials urged organizers to postpone a solidarity rally planned for Sunday, saying that police could not provide adequate security. Belgian authorities meanwhile expanded their hunt. They conducted 13 searches in Brussels and other areas Sunday, the federal prosecutor’s office said. Four people remain in custody. Prosecutors also charged another suspect linked to the attacks, local media reported Sunday. The man, identified as Abderrahmane
A., has been in custody since Friday and faces charges of belonging to a terrorist organization. The Algerian man whom Italian authorities captured Saturday, 40-year-old Djamal Eddine Ouali, was suspected of providing ISIS supporters with false identification documents, allowing them to evade authorities as they plotted attacks in Belgium and France. According to the Italian news agency ANSA, Ouali had been the subject of a Belgian arrest warrant since January. He was suspected of giving false papers to Salah Abdeslam, a suspected member of the cell that carried out the Nov. 13 Paris attacks, and Najim Laachraoui, suspected of being one of the suicide bombers at Brussels Airport.

Abdeslam is now in custody. Authorities also announced Saturday that they may have captured the most-wanted remaining suspect from the attacks. According to a European security official, the man is Fayçal Cheffou. He is suspected of being the third at attacker at Brussels Airport whose explosives-laden suitcase apparently did not detonate. The man was charged Saturday with “participation in the activities of a terrorist group, terrorist murders and attempted terrorist murders.” Belgian authorities also charged a man, “Rabah N.,” with taking part in a terrorist group and another man, “Aboubakar A.,” with a terrorism-related offense. Syrian government forces backed by Russian airstrikes drove Islamic State fighters from Palmyra on Sunday, ending the group’s 10-month reign over a town whose famed 2,000-year-old ruins once drew tens of thousands of visitors a year. The 6-foot-9 forward is slotted as a mid-second round pick by NBA DraftExpress. After Maryland’s 79-63 loss to Kansas on Thursday, he said he hadn’t even thought about the draft yet.
Virginia blows a 16-point second-half lead, falls to ACC rival Syracuse in Elite Eight NCAA TOURNAMENT With a 16-point lead early in the second half, Virginia looked liked it was on its way to its first Final Four appearance since 1984. But the top-seeded Cavaliers collapsed in the final 10 minutes, getting outscored 29-8 and losing 68-62 to ACC rival Syracuse on Sunday in Chicago. London Perrantes scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half for Virginia (29-8), and Malcolm Brogdon, the ACC player of the year, had 12 points on 2-of-14 shooting in the final game of his Cavaliers career. Malachi Richardson scored 21 of his 23 points in the second half to extend the Orange’s improbable run to the Final Four. The Orange were on the NCAA Tournament bubble after a rough closing stretch, but slipped in as a 10 seed before storming to its first Final Four since 2013 and No. 6 overall. It comes at the end of a challenging season for coach Jim

And Richardson led the way, often taking the ball right at Brogdon, who was the ACC defensive player of the year. Richardson’s driving layup with 5:47 remaining gave the Orange a 59-58 lead — their first since early in the first half. After Perrantes missed a long 3, Richardson connected from deep and smiled as he ran up the court while making circles around his eyes with his hands. The confident freshman, who scored 21 points in Syracuse’s first-round win against Dayton, added another layup for his seventh straight point. The Cavaliers had a chance to tie in the final seconds after Gbinije went 1-for-2 at the line, but Devon Hall missed a 3-point attempt and Syracuse made three free throws. JAY COHEN (AP)

Nationals trade Tyler Moore to Braves for minor league first baseman Nate Freiman

Baker mulls rotation options $1.3B NATIONALS Because of two off-days within the first four games of the season, manager Dusty Baker said the Nationals are considering skipping starts at the back end of the rotation. The Nationals won’t need a fifth starter until April 13. Max Scherzer, who is slated to start opening day in Atlanta on April 4, could pitch on regular rest on April 9, which is Game 4 of the season. Gio Gonzalez and Stephen Strasburg, scheduled to start April 6 and 7, could make their next turn in the rotation on April 11 and 12. A fourth starter — perhaps Tanner Roark based on the current spring schedule — could start April 10.
Baker didn’t detail many possibilities but said the Nationals discussed their options with team officials Sunday. He joked that pitching coach Mike Maddux presented 52 scenarios. Because the baseball season begins April 3, a pitcher could be optioned to the minors and return after the required 10 days, which would be April 13, the day of the needed fifth starter. The Nationals could perhaps option down Roark or Joe Ross and keep an extra reliever to start the season when starters can’t pitch deep in games. That might also allow the Nationals to keep a veteran on a minor league deal around longer than they had hoped.

who apologized for his postgame conversation with Dillon Brooks. The Oregon forward hit a long 3-pointer with the shot clock expiring in the final seconds of the Ducks’ 82-68 win over Duke on Thursday. Brooks said Krzyzewski told him: “I’m too good of a player to be showing [off] at the end.”
Clippers’ Griffin cleared for contact, begins ban The Clippers said Blake Griffin has been medically cleared and will immediately begin serving a fourgame suspension for punching their assistant equipment manager. Griffin, who has not played since December, practiced with the Clippers on Saturday. Griffin’s absence has been the result of a partially torn tendon in his left quad and a broken hand that he suffered when he punched Matias Testi in January. Griffin becomes eligible to play again April 3 against Washington. (AP) GOLF

FRANCHISE VALUE
The Nationals could skip a couple of Joe Ross’ starts to allow other starters to pitch on normal rest.
Ross, 22, threw 1522/3 innings last season between the minors and majors. The Nationals limited his innings in September, putting him in the bullpen because he was near his cap for the year. This enables him to handle a larger workload in 2016, although how much is unclear. Baker said the option of giving his top starters extra rest versus staying on regular rest to get more starts out of his best pitchers depends on the player. “Sometimes that sixth day comes in handy,” he said. “It depends on how he feels. I depend heavily on my pitching coach and his opinion.” JAMES WAGNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The value of the Nationals in 2015 according to Forbes, which published its annual MLB valuations last week. Washington is the ninth-most valuable team in Major League Baseball. The franchise’s worth skyrocketed from $700 million in 2014. The 83 percent change in value is the second greatest of any team in baseball. By the end of the 2015 season, the Nationals had the fifth-largest payroll in MLB. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The project elements will be assembled, in various configurations, to form concepts for the station expansion.
Jason Day made his return to No. 1 in the world feel even sweeter Sunday by winning the Match Play in Austin, Texas. Day outlasted Rory McIlroy in an epic battle in the semifinals by making a 12-foot par putt on the final hole. The championship match against Louis Oosthuizen turned into a victory lap as Day closed out Oosthuizen on the 14th hole to win, 5 and 4. (AP)
The Washington Union Station Expansion Project would expand and modernize Washington Union Station. UConn has no apologies WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Geno Auriemma and his UConn Huskies have been steamrolling through the NCAA Tournament without much trouble at all. They stand three wins away from a fourth straight national title, an unprecedented feat in the sport. Tonight in the Elite Eight the Huskies will face Texas, a team they beat by 51 points in the Sweet 16 last year. Instead of talking about the Longhorns, however, Auriemma and his team were left answering whether their dominance was good for the sport a day after they beat Mississippi State by 60 points in the regional semifinals.

Coach Auriemma insists team’s dominance isn’t bad for women’s hoops
Coach Geno Auriemma and UConn are three wins away from their fourth consecutive national title.
“When Tiger was winning every major, nobody said he was bad for golf,” Auriemma said. “Actually he did a lot for golf. He made everybody have to be a better golfer. And they did. And now there’s a lot more
great golfers because of Tiger.” Women’s basketball is still waiting for someone to consistently challenge the Huskies. UConn has won 72 consecutive games and no team has come within single digits of it during that streak — the second longest in NCAA history, trailing only its own 90-game run a few years ago. If the Huskies get three more wins, Auriemma will pass UCLA men’s coach John Wooden for the most championships in college basketball history with 11. “We don’t appreciate people for how good they are and what a good job they do, we always have to compare it to something,” Auriemma said. “Day in, day out, year in, year out, we’re faced with those questions and those comparisons.”

Natasha Rothwell keeps Tyson Beckford as her permanent tampon dispenser in “The Characters.”
MUST-SEE THIS WEEK
1 ‘Supergirl’ 8 p.m. tonight on CBS
You saw her here first Md. native Natasha Rothwell brings her comic genius to Netflix’s ‘The Characters’
TELEVISION Natasha Rothwell is a natural people pleaser. So when the folks at Netflix handed her a blank canvas and said she could fill 30 minutes however she wanted, it was, she says, “the most liberating and terrifying and beautiful thing that I’d ever been given.” “I was constantly like, ‘Are you sure there’s no lines you want me to color inside?’ ” said Rothwell, a graduate of Westlake High School in Waldorf, Md., who honed her comedy skills in D.C. before moving to New York and Los Angeles. This month Netflix debuted “The Characters,” a new sketchcomedy series in which eight rising comedians, including Rothwell, were given the chance to create their own half-hour
show. Critics quickly singled out Rothwell’s inventive style. Her episode was “by far the funniest example,” wrote the A.V. Club. “In fact, it’s delightful.” Rothwell spends her 30 minutes reimagining herself as various denizens of New York, whose lives intersect throughout the day. One of her funniest characters is a homeless man who threatens to reveal spoilers from “Game of Thrones” to his fellow subway passengers if they don’t give him money. Another is a precocious girl of indeterminate age who harasses her mother’s colleagues with uncomfortable truths about their lives. “It was really important to me to explore how disparate people are connected,” Rothwell said.
$170M
The school of ‘SNL’ Before shooting her own episode for Netflix’s “The Characters,” Natasha Rothwell wrapped up a year of writing for “Saturday Night Live.” “I was able to immediately take everything I had just learned about producing a sketch comedy show — the best sketch comedy show in the world — and take those tools and make my own,” she said. (TWP)
“Whether it’s through shared experience or chance encounters, I wanted to weave these characters’ stories together in a way that would show that connection. Because, in real life, that’s the thing that interests me most.” Rothwell, 35, spent several
years performing with Washington Improv Theater. She relocated to Los Angeles last fall to become a writer on a new HBO show, “Insecure,” created by Issa Rae (“Awkward Black Girl”). Rothwell’s Netflix episode features such famous faces as model-actor Tyson Beckford and Cecily Strong of “Saturday Night Live.” It culminates in an exuberant, dreamlike rap video that has Rothwell extolling her taste for such “basic” indulgences as Forever 21 yoga pants. The whole thing is a smart, hysterical joy. “I don’t know if my feet have touched the ground,” Rothwell said of the overwhelmingly positive reception she has received. “It’s been really surreal.”
NETFLIX
A crossover episode that involves two different networks is pretty rare, but that’s what happens when Barry Allen — a.k.a The CW’s “The Flash” — partners with Kara to battle Silver Banshee (Italia Ricci) and Livewire.
2 ‘The Late Late Show Carpool Karaoke Primetime Special’ 10 p.m. Tuesday on CBS
This special compiles James Corden’s musical car rides with stars like Adele and Elton John. And in a new session, Jennifer Lopez joins Corden on the road.
3 ‘Lopez’ 10 p.m. Wednesday on TVLand
George Lopez is caught between two worlds in this new comedy: His success alienates him from his Hispanic roots, but he feels too “brown” to be at ease with other celebrities. (TRIBUNE MEDIA)

BOX OFFICE HAUL
The box office take of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” in its debut, the sixth best weekend opening of all-time. The stakes were high for the Warner Bros. superhero showdown, which cost $250 million to make, after it was almost universally slammed by critics last week. If the estimate Sunday holds, “Batman v Superman” will be Warner Bros.’ best opening ever, besting “Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows Part 2” ($169.2 million). SEESO
Dean Rosedragon (Paul F. Tompkins) plays chess with his employees. Think there’s a metaphor there?
MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE
An easy sell: Seeso’s ‘Propertie$’ is the best deal in streaming Like millions of Americans, I am addicted to real estate reality shows. But frankly, I’m a bit tired of the predictability of it all. Houses are hunted, rehabbed, loved or listed, flipped and flopped. Then I came across a new listing in the category: “Bajillion Dollar Propertie$,” streaming on Seeso, NBC’s comedy streaming service. It’s a spoof of high-end real estate shows, and it’s hysterically over-the-top. The series focuses on the fictional Platinum Real
Estate (in Beverly Hills, of course), founded by ascotwearing Dean Rosedragon, whose scruffy brown goatee doesn’t quite match his graying hair. He created the business with nothing but a dream — and a $10 million loan from dad. Now he wants to take one of his agents as a partner. They’re eager to compete. And they’re all pretty cuckoo. Victoria King convinces a client to choose her as his listing agent by vowing, “I will sell it for 8 million in 24 hours and I will not cut off your balls.” Amir Yaghoob declares: “My only rule is I don’t
play by the rules except for my own, which I do play by.” Chelsea Leight-Leigh (no relation to the similarly named TV show) boasts of 4 million Twitter followers and 6 stalkers. Two male agents swear they aren’t lovers (though clearly they are). The clients are even crazier. A drunken show biz type wants to sell his mansion (with a view of “sharks and octupuses”), until he sobers up. He then accuses the listing agents of invading his property. They get him drunk … seven more times … until they make the sale. Seeso, which launched in January, charges $3.99 a month for its all-comedy roster, but the first two episodes of “Bajillion Dollar Propertie$” are free. You don’t need a real estate agent to know that’s a good deal.

blog log
“They went to commercial with humans, and then came back with puppets.” PETE BLACKBURN, at uproxx.com, describes how CBS — without warning — replaced the hosts of its college basketball studio crew with puppet versions of the four men. During the halftime show of Saturday’s OregonOklahoma Elite Eight game, the show returned from a break with the puppets — and the voices of their human counterparts — at the studio desk giving their picks to win the KansasVillanova game. The segment doesn’t appear to be a publicity stunt for any upcoming CBS puppet shows.
“Really, it’s Bernie’s reaction to the bird that is everything. Genuine awe and decency. Imagine that.” @SAMCMLAIRD gushes about Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders’ reaction to a bird landing on his lectern during a campaign rally Friday in Portland, Ore. Sanders first pointed out the bird when it landed on the ground near him. He looked down toward the ground and said, “Now you see, this little bird doesn’t know it ...” But then bird flew and perched on his lectern. “I think there may be some symbolism here. I know it doesn’t look like it, but that bird is really a dove asking us for world peace,” Sanders said after the bird flew away. “No more wars.” #BirdieSanders lit up Twitter soon after.
“These special effects aren’t very special.... ” STEVEN BROWN, a commenter at
mashable.com, isn’t impressed with a North Korean propaganda video released Saturday that shows a nuclear missile destroying Washington. “If the American imperialists provoke us a bit, we will not hesitate to slap them with a pre-emptive nuclear strike,” read the Korean subtitles in the video, as translated by The New York Times. The four-minute computer-animated video, uploaded to YouTube, ends with an image of a U.S. flag burning in front of a cemetery.
“Baby Isabelle … hasn’t yet received any shampoo commercial offers, although somebody did substitute her face for the ‘Most Interesting Man in the World’ featured in the ad for Dos Equis beer.” CATHY FREE, at people.com, writes about 2-month-old Isabelle Kaplan, who has become an Internet hit for her abnormally thick head of hair. Since a relative shared a snapshot of Isabelle on Reddit two weeks ago, the baby’s photo has received more than 3 million views. People have Photoshopped Isabelle’s face onto pictures of Mark Wahlberg, Harry Potter and X-Men’s Wolverine.

But when WE bring McD’s to a party, it’s weird
‘You want your mom to be blessed, right?’ In a new interview with LGBT site PrideSource, Gwen Stefani explained how she would react if one of her three sons told her he was gay. “I would be blessed with a gay son,” she said. “You know that I would feel blessed about that. … As long as my boys are protected and happy and I’m spending quality time with them, whether it’s doing sports or doing nails, it really doesn’t matter.” (EXPRESS)
Model and recent cookbook author Chrissy Teigen threw herself a lavish baby shower on Saturday, complete with McDonald’s treats, a photobooth and at least three Kardashians. According to Us Weekly, the celebration was held at Kim Kardashian’s Los Angeles home, where guests feasted on french fries, hashbrowns and sausage egg McMuffins. Attendees included Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Minka Kelly, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian and Erin Andrews. The ladies documented the festivities, and photos of themselves, of course, on social media. Snapchat created a special filter for guests to use on their photos just for the shower. (EXPRESS)

She came so close to tweeting a ‘Skyfall’ joke
After the political site Independent Journal published a list of reasons why Dwayne Johnson should run for president, the actor revealed he’s given the idea some thought. “Maybe one day,” he tweeted Friday. “Surely the White House has a spot for my pick up truck.” Johnson is a registered Republican, but has also called Democrat President Barack Obama “a good buddy of mine.” (EXPRESS)
Adele has apologized after a fan was injured at one of her concerts in Scotland. The incident happened Friday night at the SSE Hydro venue in Glasgow when a chain fell from production rigging and hit a woman in the audience. The fan was treated at the scene and hospitalized as a precaution. Adele tweeted, “I’m so sorry to hear that someone got hurt at my show tonight. It’s being investigated to ensure it won’t happen again.” (AP)

Stranger still, all of this happened in slow motion Hugh Jackman leapt into action after his two children were swept out to sea Saturday in Sydney. Witnesses told Australia’s 9 News that a swimmer helped by linking arms with Jackman and his kids, 10 and 15, and pulling them to shore. “He was pretty cool, calm and collected, as Hugh always is, I suppose,” the swimmer said of the rescue.
