Goodbye to all that jazz THE DISTRICT Miles Davis played there. So did John Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. And on Sunday, drummer Quincy Phillips — dressed in a faux fur coat, blue-feathered shirt and plaid flare pants — prepared for his final set at the legendary Bohemian Caverns jazz club on U Street NW. “This place is everything,” he said, standing outside the subterranean club as fans asked if he could finagle them into the sold-out finale. Bohemian Caverns, a jazz club that operated off and on for nearly 90 years, hosted its final show Sunday night, leaving an uncertain future for the hallowed building and a historic strip of the District that was once known as Black Broadway. It opened as Club Caverns in 1926 and operated as a speakeasy during the Prohibition era. It closed in the 1940s, then reopened in the next decade as Crystal Caverns, eventually becoming Bohemian Caverns.

Musician Quincy Phillips sets up the drums for one last live jazz show at the Bohemian Caverns on U Street in Northwest on Easter Sunday.

But the 1968 riots that ravaged U Street and other parts of the city forced it to shutter until the turn of the millennium, when new development began sprouting in the area. When new owners took over in 2006, Bohemian Caverns became a bedrock of the local jazz scene as young musicians flocked to the 100-seat club and its walls of fake, curvy rocks. The venue was a place for local artists such as Phillips and his ensemble, the Young Lions, to gain

national exposure. Emerging artists flocked there to jam alongside more established names. “This is still the same building, the same stage where the greats played,” said Steve Synk, a 25-year-old bassist who played Sunday. “We’ve lost so many jazz hubs in D.C. Losing this place is on another level. It’s losing a home.” Co-owner Omrao Brown said the club was struggling financially and isn’t renewing its lease. “We hoped we could create something that would be infinitely sustainable,” Brown said. “But we wanted to be part of the community and we definitely achieved that.” On Bohemian Caverns’ last night in business, Easter Sunday, old-timers and first-timers gathered to bid farewell. An hourslong jam session brought in musicians who had played at the venue over the past decade, as well as past and current members of the resident Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra. “I want my kids to see the emotional side of music. How musicians come together for good times and sad times like this,” said Bernadine Dorsey, who brought her two children from Baltimore.

MedStar tries to recover after network is hacked REGION MedStar Health patients were being turned away or treated without important computer records Tuesday as the health care giant worked to restore online systems crippled by a virus on Monday. MedStar officials hoped that hundreds of thousands of patient records could be accessed again by Tuesday night, a spokeswoman said. She added that the institution’s 10 hospitals and more than 250 outpatient facilities in the Washington region were functioning safely.

But two nurses said the cyberattack created a chaotic environment in at least one facility. At Washington Hospital Center, one nurse who worked overnight described the situation as difficult. Without access to email and computer systems, the medical staff had fallen back on seldomused paper records that must be faxed or hand-delivered. But this nurse and another said the paper charts are far less comprehensive than those kept in digital form. They can be missing vital pieces of patient information.

The Park Service spokesman, Mike Litterst, said that at the time of the malfunction, there were 19 people in the elevator and about 23 who were at the observation level. He said the visitors — and park rangers — were safely evacuated without incident. Litterst said in a press release Tuesday that elevator technicians are onsite and that the monument will remain closed until they finish an inspection and “any necessary repairs are completed.” Last month the monument closed for repairs after an elevator control box was damaged by a worker. GOP front-runner says he’ll stand by adviser, lashes out at accuser

Corey Lewandowski has been Donald Trump’s top adviser throughout the presidential campaign.

News at the time, as she tried to ask Trump a question during a March 8 campaign event. Trump cast doubt on her claims, telling reporters that he doubts her statement that she suffered bruises from Lewandowski. “How do you know those bruises weren’t there before? She said she had a bruise on her arm. Take a look at her facial expression, her facial expression doesn’t even change,” he said. Earlier Tuesday, Trump released a series of tweets reversing a previous position that the incident never happened, hinting instead that he feared for his safety. “Why is this reporter touching me as I leave a news conference?

POLITICS Police charged Donald Trump’s campaign manager with simple battery Tuesday as a videotaped altercation with a reporter transformed what was another messy campaign sideshow into a criminal court summons. Jupiter, Fla., police determined that probable cause existed to charge Corey Lewandowski, who has served as Trump’s most trusted political adviser for much of the past year. Police on Tuesday morning issued Lewandowski a notice to appear before a judge May 4 for the misdemeanor charge, which carries up to a year in jail. This injects a court battle into an already contentious Republican primary season just a week before a high-profile primary in Wisconsin. Speaking to reporters on his airplane in Wisconsin on Tuesday, Trump said Lewandowski has been “very seriously maligned,” vowing to stand by him. Police charged Lewandowski after reviewing a surveillance video of the incident, obtained from security at the Trumpowned property. Police determined that the video shows Lewandowski grabbing Michelle Fields, who worked for Breitbart Bre

Can I press charges?” he wrote, calling Lewandowski “a very decent man.” Fields shot back on Twitter: “My story never changed. Seriously, just stop lying.” It’s unclear what impact, if any, the news will have on Trump’s march toward his party’s presidential nomination. Critics cast it as another example of why he would struggle to attract support from women in a prospective race against Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. (AP)

Archaeologists are excavating a home Malcolm X lived in as a teenager in Boston in the 1940s in an effort to learn more about his early life. Researchers from the city’s Archaeology Lab and the University of Massachusetts-Boston began the two-week project Tuesday, with help from members of the slain black activist’s family and community residents. Built in 1874, the only surviving dwelling from his formative years in Boston was designated a landmark in 1998. “No physical move in my life has been more pivotal or profound in its repercussions,” Malcolm X — born Malcolm Little in Omaha, Neb. — wrote in his autobiography about his time in Boston. The 4-4 split, in a case that sharply divided the court’s liberal union supporters and their conservative opponents, demonstrated how much is riding on President Barack Obama’s effort to replace Scalia with a judge who could tilt the balance on the high court for years to come. How to bet on politics ‘Prediction markets’ allow people to legally put money on presidential candidates

A GOP senator blasts his party, meets Garland MICHAEL S. WILLIAMSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS It was another primary-night Tuesday at a K Street bar. The shadowy basement of PJ Clarke’s was brightened by screens — phones, iPads and laptops — in the hands of beer-sippers who were talking Trump and Cruz, approval ratings and Supreme Court picks — and how it all added up to sweet, sweet money. Thousands of dollars were being gambled on the outcomes. And it was all completely legal. Political gambling has long been banned in the United States, but the government makes an exception for “prediction markets” such as PredictIt, host of this bar gathering, because of the valuable data they produce for academic researchers. “Utah is pretty steady at 90 cents for Cruz,” Matt Baker, a 27-year-old research analyst, announced to his table. “Trump’s at 92 cents in Arizona right now!” “All right, all right,” conceded his friend Scott Wetzel, a 33-year-old policy analyst. “I will buy some Trump.” So Wetzel, a Hillary Clinton supporter, pulled out his credit card and bet that Trump would win the GOP contest in Arizona. PredictIt’s 29,000 active traders had an average of $121.36 in the game last week, but some are playing thousands at a time. PredictIt breaks the election cycle down into a near-endless

Several PredictIt bettors got together during a primary night at a D.C. tavern to socialize and wager.

list of yes-or-no questions: “Will Bernie Sanders win Hawaii?,” “Will Ted Cruz win the Republican nomination?,” and even far-fetched scenarios such as “Will Paul Ryan win the 2016 presidential race?” Traders can buy “yes” or “no” shares on each question. As with the stock market, the price for shares is determined by the supply and demand as traders buy and sell them. Currently, the hive mind of PredictIt traders seems to think Donald Trump has a 65 percent chance of winning next week’s Wisconsin primary: “Yes” shares wagering on his victory are going for 65 cents, which means that a “no” share wagering

on his loss would cost 45 cents. The winner takes home $1. It may seem troubling to see the fate of the nation treated like a cheap round of poker, but the gamification of politics is actually incredibly useful to economists and political scientists. “Prediction markets help us understand all sorts of things about the dynamics of campaigns and the impact different events have,” said David Rothschild, an economist at Microsoft Research and the founder of prediction aggregator PredictWise.com. “We can start to figure out how much that debate gaffe really cost somebody, or, how effective was that ad?” It’s so addicting, traders said,

that some think PredictIt is actually making its gamers — mostly people in their 20s and 30s — more engaged in politics. They’re constantly assessing the latest polls, reading up on candidate strategies and watching for gaffes that could move share prices. That’s why prediction markets do such a good job at anticipating election outcomes. Polls ask a limited number of voters whom they would vote for today. Prediction markets ask thousands of very informed people to make their best guess at what will actually happen — and to be so confident that they would put their own money on it. #tonedownforwhat THE CAUSE: Bernie Sanders supporters question a request by Hillary Clinton’s top strategist, Joel Benenson, for Sanders’ campaign to tone down its attacks.

WHO: Ebola no longer a world health emergency

BACKSTORY: Benenson said Clinton isn’t willing to schedule a new Democratic debate ahead of New York’s April 19 primary. “Let’s see if [Sanders] goes back to the kind of tone he said he was going to set early on,” Benenson said Monday on CNN. “If he does that, then we’ll talk about debates.” (EXPRESS)

COURTS Mark Kirk on Tuesday became the first Republican senator to meet with Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, above, criticizing GOP leaders’ refusal to hold confirmation hearings or a vote on the longtime federal judge. “By leading by example, I’m showing what a rational, responsible guy would do that really wants the constitutional process to go forward,” Kirk said, all but explicitly rebuking Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has insisted on leaving the vacancy unfilled until President Barack Obama’s replacement names a selection. Kirk, who represents Democratic-leaning Illinois, is one of two GOP senators — along with Susan Collins of Maine — to say the full chamber should vote on the nominee. Earlier Tuesday, Collins explained the basis for her desire to see the Senate begin considering Garland’s nomination by telling Maine’s WGAN radio, “The first thing I did is I read the Constitution.” Collins said there was “no basis” for flatly refusing to consider any Obama pick. Arguing that a newly elected Democratic president might choose a nominee more liberal than Garland, she said of McConnell, “I’m a bit perplexed by his position.” At least 15 Senate Republicans have said they’d be willing to meet with Garland, though many have said they would tell him that he won’t get a vote. THREE POINTERS

Braden Holtby, left, and Nate Schmidt celebrate the win that locked up the Presidents’ Trophy.

Maintaining urgency Capitals, having clinched home-ice advantage, aim to build momentum for playoffs CAPITALS Having already clinched the Presidents’ Trophy and home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs, coach Barry Trotz concedes that the Capitals must “manufacture urgency,” for the final seven games of the regular season. The challenge may be somewhat easier tonight with the Capitals visiting the Flyers (8 p.m., NBCSN) in a potential firstround playoff preview. “The chances of us playing [the Flyers in the postseason] are pretty good,” Trotz said Tuesday. “So if we go in with the right attitude and we’re ready to go, it will be a good experience for us — the environment, the intensity, all of those things. The emotion that’s part of the game, it’s really big.”

As the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Capitals (5416-5; 113 points) will begin the playoffs against the East’s second wild-card team — a position the Flyers (37-25-13; 87 points) held entering play Tuesday. Washington clinched the best overall record with a 4-1 home win Monday night over Columbus. The Flyers have earned standings points in 11 of their past 12 games and have climbed back into the playoff picture thanks to an 11-3-2 record since Feb. 25. “We haven’t played them since they’ve kind of gotten hot, but we’ve always known that they’re a good team,” said goalie Braden Holtby, who is expected to start tonight opposite Philadelphia’s Steve Mason.

“They have a lot of great offensive players that can generate goals in a lot of different ways. They play a hard style; they have a lot of big bodies, a lot of speed. We’ve never taken them lightly, that’s for sure. So it will be a good test.”

Holtby has a league-best 46 wins — two shy of matching Martin Brodeur’s single-season NHL record. Holtby’s pursuit of NHL history is one of the few remaining milestones within reach for the Capitals, who also can establish a franchise record with a 55th win in a single campaign. “Once you’ve set a main goal at the end of the road, the other ticks along the way, they’re just rest stops for the main goal,” forward Justin Williams said. “We’re trying to win a championship here. We’ve had a great season so far, Braden has had a great season and if that happens for him, we’ll all be extremely proud of him, but we have bigger goals and bigger aspirations.” BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS)

Chris Paul will skip Olympics

Clippers point guard Chris Paul said Tuesday that he will decline a chance for a third consecutive trip to the Olympics with Team USA. Paul, who will turn 31 in May, cited physical wear and tear. His decision could boost the long-shot hopes of Wizards point guard John hn Wall to make the team. He is one of 30 finalists, but his position is deep in talent. is eager to return to one of the defense’s pivotal positions. “You’re the captain of that defense,” he said. “You have to run that defense. That’s your main priority. Catcher, too, defense is first. That keeps me mentally off of thinking of other things throughout the game. … Sometimes it takes the pressure off the rest of the game.” And by that, he means his offense. Bladder issue resolved, Harvey will start opener

The NFL on Tuesday released the order of selections, including compensatory picks, for the draft April 28-30. The Redskins have eight picks: 21st (Rd. 1), 53rd (Rd. 2), 84th (Rd. 3), 120th (Rd. 4), 158th (Rd. 5), 187th (Rd. 6) and 232nd and 242nd (Rd. 7). The Redskins’ number of picks and selection order could change; general manager Scot McCloughan has said he would like to have 12 picks. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Mets pitcher Matt Harvey, the blood clots in his bladder gone, was cleared Tuesday to start the team’s opener Sunday night at Kansas City. The Mets on Monday said a medical issue — which they did not disclose — could sideline him, but tests Tuesday showed he was OK. Memories of past struggles crept back in when Espinosa started this spring 0-for-18, and is 3-for-27 overall. But manager Dusty Baker and hitting coach Rick Schu have been in Espinosa’s ear all spring about relaxing at the plate and

shortening his swing to make more contact. His strength to hit home runs and speed to run the bases could mean that more contact would translate to more offense. “I probably try to do too much or am thinking too much,” Espinosa said. “[Recent] games I haven’t. … I’m taking care of this defense and now I’m going up to hit. Barrel on the ball and hit. That’s it. No more thinking.” JAMES WAGNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NATIONALS When Danny Espinosa runs out to the left side of the infield, something just feels right. The view of the game, the spin of the balls off the bat, the defensive responsibilities, the pressure — they all feel natural. Until the Nationals’ minor leagues, the only position he had ever really known was shortstop. And after primarily serving as a second baseman the past six years, he has returned home. “To be on that side of the diamond again, it’s just enjoyable,” said Espinosa, 28. “The game, the comfort, it’s my defense to take care of. I enjoy that.” The Nationals, who conclude spring training today with a game at the Mets, have not announced a lineup for Monday’s opener. But Espinosa is expected to be the starting shortstop, assuming the position previously manned by Ian Desmond. Daniel Murphy, who signed in January, takes over at second. Espinosa is long known as the best defensive shortstop in the organization, and one of the best infield defenders in baseball. He

The love between TNT reporter Craig Sager and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has been welldocumented the past few years, and now there’s a pin for it. A company called Patti Lapel developed a pin showing Popovich with his arm around Sager during an interview. Sager is sporting one of his signature loud suits and Popovich looks as stoic as ever. The company said 15 percent of the money made from the $10 pins would go to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Sager is away from his sideline duties because of a reemergence of leukemia, the disease that has plagued him for two years. He and Popovich have formed a friendship despite the latter’s legendary dislike of mid-game interviews. That bond has led to uncharacteristically open and emotional moments for the coach. “He’s just been such a genuine person who really does love the NBA and loves the game, and it comes through and you know that,” Popovich said on HBO. “Even though he does what he does design- and fashionwise, you know it’s part of the shtick. But his questions are always sensible, they’re always answerable and he does it with fun. He does it with humor. “I react to that very positively. So we have a good time together.” NICK MARTIN

Recent discussion topics at “supper club” dinners have included Beyonce’s “Formation” video and the case against getting married.

A standing weekly dinner date brings a group of friends comfort and companionship

EATING AT HOME The dozen 30-somethings gathered around Dillon Babington’s dinner table in her Columbia Heights apartment have red wine-stained teeth and permanent smiles. Between belly laughs and animated chatter, there’s a spontaneous singalong to “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.” The group has the enthusiasm of lifelong friends who haven’t seen each other in ages. In reality, they’re members of a dinner club that’s met nearly every Wednesday for the past three years. “People think I’m crazy when I tell them we meet once a week. It seems to surprise them,” Ellen Weissfeld says. “But honestly, if you miss one week you feel sad.” Simply called “supper club,” the group was founded by friends Samantha Shiffman and Brian Wright as a break from their draining work schedules. It’s since expanded to eight members and the occasional guest — all

invited from the members’ social circle — who work in professions as varied as bartending, strategy at Planned Parenthood and analysis at the Department of Energy. “One of the reasons the dynamic works is because it’s not people you see every weekend or people you work with,” Babington says. “It’s a different community, and you know if you don’t go to supper club you’re not going to see these people for a week.” The rules are few: Every week, a member of the group hosts dinner at his or her place and is responsible for choosing a theme and cooking something he or she has never made before; everyone who attends brings two bottles of wine; you can’t bring someone you just started dating; and there’s no judging the food. “Most people in D.C. don’t have the opportunity to have a family meal as much as they would probably like,” Babington says. “But here, if you’re in town and you’re free, you have a place to

eat with your friends. It’s the only thing I do every week other than go to work.” On a recent Wednesday, Babington interrupts the gaiety to tell guests about the evening’s literary-themed supper — the group’s 126th meal together. “This dish is called Grapes of Wrap,” she says, pointing to a piece of lettuce topped with a mound of chicken salad and grapes. One of the guests picks it up to take a bite and it crumbles

on the plate. “An alternative name for it is Things Fall Apart,” she says. Culinary talent in the group ranges from advanced to amateur: One night there may be a printed menu full of gourmet lamb dishes inspired by “Silence of the Lambs”; on another night they may pass around hot dogs with various toppings. And while food is the tie that binds them, the ritual of gathering in and around the kitchen is more important than what ends up on the plates. Everyone in the club admits they’re surprised it’s still going strong after three years, but they credit its success to the come-as-you-are nature of the gatherings. Though there is one type of person they’d think twice about before inviting. “What if someone wanted to be part of the club but had celiac [disease]?” someone asks at the end of the meal. “They’d be a really good friend we saw on Saturdays,” responds another. NOW IT’S YOUR TURN

Why not host your own club? “Being in the kitchen is the most fun place to be with a friend,” says Leela Cyd, author of the new cookbook “Food with Friends,” which includes recipes for potluck dishes and simple foods everyone can enjoy. “There’s a shared responsibility that’s really beautiful to feel where we’re running around and people are so busy.” Cyd shares some tips to make your own club even better. HOLLEY SIMMONS (EXPRESS)

Don’t overthink it “You can meet over pancakes or bagels. The food can be simple so it’s not stressful on the host.” Share the responsibility “Divvy up the recipe, or ask someone to make the dessert and you make the salad.” Consider going meatless “It makes dinners easier to cook and satisfies all the different needs of different eaters.”

‘Batman v Superman’ isn’t about poor reviews FILMS The Narrative in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” might change course as quirkily as the East River, but at least it isn’t lazy. The same cannot be said, however, for the simplistic narrative about critics-vs.-superhero films that again rears its head. “Batman v Superman” grossed $424 million globally over Easter weekend, making it the biggest superhero debut ever when not adjusted for inflation. And one popular takeaway from that haul has been that the pricey “Man of Steel” sequel has somehow not only defied those critics who savaged the film, but also has rendered them irrelevant. The trouble is, such tired thinking is too black and white. For a truer picture, we must pull back the shot, because the argument is framed in entirely the wrong way. Yes, “Batman v Superman” has received poor to mixed reviews. And many on the Internet are citing the harshest excerpts from mainstream reviews. Yet “BvS” currently sits at a score of 44 on metacritic.com, within the lower-middling range. Some in the media cite “Batman v Superman” as if it were the pinnacle of superhero-film divergence between cold critical reaction and warm audience reception. Yet such an approach ignores

The resilience of the action movie validates the power of branding

decades of striking examples. Take 2013’s “Man of Steel,” which averaged a 55 on Metacritic — yet went on to gross more than two-thirds of a billion dollars worldwide. Or consider 2007’s “Spider-Man 3,” which averaged a 51 on Metacritic — yet grossed nearly $900 million worldwide. Or the Thor sequel “The Dark World” (54 on Metacritic), which cracks the list of Top 100 global grossers ever, with $645 million. Attempting to hold up “Batman v Superman” as the people’s boxoffice champion over negative criticism misses the point: The deepest reason for this commercial resilience is about branding.

$745M

Whatever the source material, be it a book or video game, Hollywood is supremely skilled at selling you a name you already recognize. Familiarity can render much criticism muted. Which is why, if you want to see real disparity between critical and commercial outcomes, check out the cinematic masterpiece that is “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.” It’s a case of an abysmal 24 on Metacritic vs. $343 million in global gross. Or “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” from 2014, which gets a low 32 on Metacritic, yet grossed $1.1 billion worldwide, putting it at No. 15 all-time.

Patty Duke, who as a teen won an Oscar for playing Helen Keller in “The Miracle Worker” and maintained a long and successful career throughout her life while battling bipolar disorder, died Tuesday at 69. Duke’s agent said the actress died of sepsis from a ruptured intestine. She died in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Duke, whose real name was Anna Pearce, found early success playing Keller first on Broadway alongside Anne Bancroft, and then in an acclaimed 1962 film. In 1963, Duke starred in a sitcom, “The Patty Duke Show,” in which she played identical cousins and earned an Emmy. “We’re so grateful to her for living a life that generates that amount of compassion and feeling in others,” said actor Sean Astin, her son. Duke also was an activist for mental health causes, helping to remove the stigma from bipolar disorder. (AP)

Judge: Lawsuit against Bill Cosby can proceed Janice Dickinson’s defamation lawsuit against Bill Cosby should move forward, a judge ruled Tuesday, saying a trial can determine the truthfulness of the model’s claims that the comedian raped her in 1982. A jury can decide the credibility of the allegations and whether a statement by Cosby’s former lawyer branding her a liar was defamatory, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Debre Katz Weintraub said in her ruling. The ruling also allows for the possibility that Dickinson, above, could recoup punitive damages if she wins the case. (AP)

“Letterman’s face is saying, less than a year after his final show, that it is free.” DAN ZAK, at washingtonpost.com, writes about former “Late Show”

host David Letterman’s wizard-like beard and the trend of public figures growing out their facial hair after they leave the spotlight. The “retirement beard,” Zak writes, is how many famous men — from former vice president Al Gore to former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart — showed they were moving on to a new phase of life. It’s a bit ironic, Zak writes, as beards are now so common in the everyman world that they “are a sign of conformity, not rebellion.”
