A family dog in Laurel, Miss., recently came home with more than a bone or toy to fetch — the pup had a big bag of marijuana. According to a statement from the Jones County Sheriff’s Office, the homeowner told deputies that when his dog came home with the bag, he initially thought it was garbage but then realized it was full of pot. Police say they recovered about a pound of the drug. It’s unclear where the dog got it. (AP)

What’s new at Nats Park? Haute Dogs and Fries, left; Pinch Dumpling, center; and a new beer partnership. SCOTT ALLEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Split continues to  expand D.C. ride-hailing service

Loaded bases ‌ and bellies The Nationals give the pitch for some of their concessions for 2016

NATIONALS The Nationals hosted their annual ballpark tour Tuesday to showcase what’s new at Nationals Park in 2016. There will be no shortage of new concessions, including a wider variety of offerings on the Gallery (300) Level. Two Mike Isabella concepts — Catchfly and Kapnos at the Park — will open behind Section 301. Catchfly will feature Southern-style cuisine, including a hot chicken sandwich, St. Louis BBQ ribs, coleslaw, popcorn chicken with three homemade

sauces and waffle fries. Kapnos at the Park, a takeoff on Isabella’s Greek-themed restaurant, will offer several kinds of gyros, including falafel and chili cheesesteak, as well as fried Greek potatoes, tzatziki and hummus. A second location of the Virginia Country Kitchen stand that debuted last season will open in Section 315. On the Mezzanine level, Shake Shack was expanded to occupy the space previously occupied by El Verano Taqueria, which was moved to a stand behind Section 233. Shake Shack will also feature an e-cash line for Nats Plus members. Pour a sweet tea out for Hard Times Cafe, a staple at Nationals

Park since it opened in 2008 but will not be returning for 2016. Haute Dogs and Fries, one of two winners in the Nationals’ pitch-your-product contest, will move into Hard Times’ space in the left field plaza beyond Section 106. Haute Dogs’ Nats Park menu will include four different styles of hot dogs (including a banh mi dog), lamb sliders and tater tots. Pinch Dumpling, the other winner of the pitch-your-product contest, will offer three kinds of dumplings (beef and onion; pork and cabbage; cabbage and carrot) in Section 302. Six dumplings (steamed or fried) will cost $10 and come with a side of Asian slaw, daikon salad or fried peanuts.

Thirsty yet? The rebranding associated with the Nationals’ switch from MillerCoors to Anheuser-Busch was on full display. There will be a pregame happy hour deal at the Budweiser Terrace, the area behind the center field scoreboard previously known as the Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk. From the time the gates open until 30 minutes before first pitch, beers at the Budweiser Terrace bar will be $5, which is $1 cheaper than last year’s deal. Fear not, there will still be craft beer. In fact, the District Drafts program will be expanded and there will be at least one additional District Drafts stand (up from four last season). SCOTT ALLEN

In the increasingly crowded world of ride-hailing, Split continues its march across D.C. The nearly year-old service has expanded into American University and nearby neighborhoods such as Tenleytown, Cathedral Heights, Cleveland Park and Van Ness. As of last month, its service area stretched roughly on an axis from Northwest to Southeast in its hometown. (TWP)

Terry McAuliffe vetoed legislation Wednesday aimed at protecting opponents of same-sex marriage, saying it would legalize discrimination against the LGBT community and hurt the state’s economy. The measure would prohibit the state from punishing religious groups that refuse services related to gay marriages. Metro mulls longer closures Officials say lines may need to be closed for months to make repairs TRANSPORTATION Metro’s top officials warned Wednesday that the transit system is in such need of repair that they might shut down entire rail lines for as long as six months for maintenance, potentially snarling thousands of daily commutes and worsening congestion in the already traffic-clogged region. Board Chairman Jack Evans and General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld put rail riders on notice about possible extended closures at a high-level conference of local leaders. The discussion also revealed strong resistance to what Evans said was a “dire” need for more than $1 billion a year in additional funding for Metro. The officials’ comments underlined the depth of Metro’s problems, which are steadily becoming more apparent as Wiedefeld continues to probe the rail system’s defects since he took over as the transit agency’s chief executive in November. Until now, Metro has typically done repair work at night or during short shutdowns over weekends. An exception was the unprecedented shutdown of the entire system on a regular workday March 16 for emergency track safety inspections. Wiedefeld ordered that closure in what now seems to have been an initial taste of more bitter

medicine to follow. “The system right now, in order to do the maintenance that needs to be done, cannot be done on three hours a night and on weekends. It just can’t,” said Evans, who also is a D.C. Council member (D-Ward 2). “So in order to do repairs that are necessary, it may come to the point where we have to close the entire Blue Line for six months. People will go crazy. But there are going to be hard decisions that have to be made in order to get this fixed,” Evans said. At a minimum, Evans said, Metro will have to shut segments of lines for extended periods. Although he twice singled out the

Blue Line as a candidate for closure, Evans said any of Metro’s six lines could be shuttered. He said the Red Line was the least likely to be shut, because much repair work has already been done on it. “That’s up to Paul [Wiedefeld]. He’s the operations guy. I’m just the board member,” Evans said. Wiedefeld confirmed he was considering such lengthy closures, but hasn’t made a decision yet. He said he expected to do so within a month to six weeks. “I’m keeping all my options open,” Wiedefeld said. “There are some bigger issues here in terms of power and track. … In the last few years, we’ve been trying to do this [maintenance] in a sort

of piecemeal way, and basically we’ve alienated everyone.” The officials spoke to 100 government officials, business executives and transit experts at an invitation-only “summit” called to mark the 40th anniversary of Metro’s opening by discussing how to restore it to its original “world-class” quality. The response in the audience was mixed regarding the prospect of lengthy shutdowns. Montgomery Council Member Marc Elrich, D-At Large, said closing an entire line for six months would be “a disaster.” He suggested stopping service earlier in the evenings to allow more time for maintenance. local TRANSPORTATION Amtrak plans to begin building a new $50 million Union Station concourse this summer that it said would double the space for passengers and improve circulation throughout the station by 2019. Union Station passengers have long complained that the waiting area for trains there — the second-busiest in the country for the rail service — is dark, cramped and difficult to maneuver. Despite the proximity to train tracks, some of the station’s 37 million annual passengers have difficulty knowing which

direction to head to catch their train or make connections to commuter lines, Metro, buses, taxis or the new D.C. Streetcar. In a design Amtrak released Tuesday, the station’s north wall on the concourse level will be pushed back to add another 20,000 square feet of space and bring new restrooms, boarding gates, seating, an Amtrak police station and a ClubAcela lounge. Passengers would be able to look out on the train tracks through a glass wall. Work will begin this summer, as crews begin to move mechanical systems that are located in the

concourse area. Train service is not expected to be affected, said Amtrak’s David Zaidain, who oversees the project. Construction on the full plan will begin in the spring of next year, with completion in 2019 or 2020, meaning that before passengers get to enjoy the new concourse they will have to endure two to three years’ worth of hard hats and dust. Zaidain estimated the price tag at $40 million to $50 million, most of the money coming from Amtrak’s budget. JONATHAN O’CONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Coastal cities gone by 2100?

HEALTH

Hopkins announces first HIV-positive transplants Surgeons in Baltimore for the first time have transplanted organs between an HIV-positive donor and HIV-positive recipients, a long-awaited new option for patients with the AIDS virus whose kidneys or livers are failing. Johns Hopkins University announced Wednesday that both recipients are recovering well after one received a kidney and the other a liver from a deceased donor. (AP)

ENVIRONMENT Sea levels could rise nearly twice as much as previously predicted by the end of this century if carbon dioxide emissions continue unabated, an outcome that could devastate coastal communities around the globe, according to new research published Wednesday. The startling findings, published in the journal Nature, paint a far grimmer picture than current consensus predictions, which have suggested that seas could rise by just under a meter at most by the year 2100. The scientists behind Wednesday’s study concluded oceans could rise by close to two meters in total (more than six feet) by the end of the century. The melting of ice on Antarctica alone could cause seas to rise more than 15 meters (49 feet) by 2500. The projection “nearly doubles” prior estimates of sea level rise, which had relied on a “minimal contribution from Antarctica,” said Rob DeConto of University of Massachusetts, Amherst, who authored the study with David Pollard of Penn State University. The research already has created a buzz in the community of scientists studying Antarctica, and experts largely praised the new model as thorough and impressive, while noting its

remaining uncertainties. “People should not look at this as a futuristic scenario of things that may or may not happen. They should look at it as the tragic story we are following right now,” said Eric Rignot, an expert on Antarctica’s ice sheet and an earth sciences professor at the University of California, Irvine, who was not involved in Wednesday’s study. Should the new research prove correct, it could trigger a “tectonic shift” in expectations for the speed and severity of the sea level problem, said Ben Strauss, director of the program on sea level rise at Climate Central, an independent organization of

scientists based in New Jersey. “Under the high emissions scenario, the 22nd century would be the century of hell,” Strauss said. “There would really be an unthinkable level of sea rise. It would erase many major cities and some nations from the map. … That century would become the century of exodus from the coast.” Places as far flung as Bangladesh, Shanghai, Hampton Roads in Virginia and parts of Washington, D.C., could be engulfed by rising waters, Strauss said. The researchers behind Wednesday’s study make clear that their model has limitations and that human behavior can alter the possible outcomes.

In Paris late last year, world leaders forged a historic agreement to begin scaling back emissions in coming years. But even under a more moderate emissions scenario, Wednesday’s study found the Antarctic contribution to sea level rise still could reach about two feet by 2100, and much more by 2500. Only if countries sharply reduce emissions does the model show it’s possible to preserve Antarctica in roughly its current state. “This research highlights the importance of doing even much better than the Paris agreement if we’re going to save our coastal cities,” Strauss said. FDA eases abortion pill rules New guidelines allow for easier access and use later in pregnancy

Enhance your career with a Master of Science in Law. Designed for professionals. Choose from specializations in:

HEALTH New recommendations for the abortion pill announced Wednesday by the Food and Drug Administration could increase use of the medication to terminate a pregnancy in the United States. The new label changes the recommended dosage and allows the treatment to be used up to 70 days into pregnancy — three weeks longer than the previous guidelines. It also relaxes prescriber guidelines to allow, for

example, a nurse practitioner to administer the drugs. The reality in practice will not change for most abortion patients, as doctors for years have been legally diverging from the old FDA protocol based on research. But a handful of states, including Texas and Ohio, require abortion providers to adhere at least in part to the FDAapproved label, leading some providers to all but abandon the use of the abortion pill. The label change is effective immediately. It applies to Mifeprex, which is the brand name for mifepristone, one of the two drugs used in medication

abortions. It blocks the production of progesterone, a hormone that prepares the lining of the uterus for a fertilized egg. A day or two after taking that drug, the woman takes the second drug, misoprostol, which causes the uterus to expel the pregnancy. The FDA said that the manufacturer of Mifeprex, Danco Laboratories, applied for the updated label in May. Women can get Mifeprex from health care providers and under the supervision of a certified prescriber. It is not available in retail pharmacies or legally over the Internet. FDA OKs experimental test for Zika screening

A laptop used by one of the Brussels bombers contained images of the Belgian prime minister’s home and office, an official said Wednesday, heightening fears after last week’s attacks on the airport and subway system. An anonymous government official said that “it is alarming that they were apparently scouting the terrain” around the lush Royal Park where both his office, “Le 16,” and his Lambermont residence are located. Federal health officials are granting use of an experimental test to screen blood donations for Zika virus, an emergency step designed to protect local blood supplies from the mosquito-borne virus. The action means U.S. territories with active Zika infections, primarily Puerto Rico, will be able to resume collecting and screening their own blood. Earlier this month, the island barred local donations and began importing blood from the U.S. (AP)

No charges against Minneapolis cops Prosecutor deems shooting of unarmed Jamar Clark justified MINNEAPOLIS Two white police officers involved in the fatal shooting of a black man last fall will not face criminal charges, a prosecutor announced Wednesday in a decision that drew outrage from community members who said the move showed that the legal system is rigged against African-Americans. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said his decision not to charge the officers in the death of 24-year-old Jamar Clark was based on forensic evidence that showed Clark was not handcuffed, as claimed by some people who said they saw the shooting, and had attempted to grab an officer’s weapon, which made them fear for their lives and justified use of deadly force. Clark ignored warnings to take his hands off Mark Ringgenberg’s gun before he was shot and told Ringgenberg and officer Dustin Schwarze: “I’m ready to die,” the prosecutor said. Freeman painstakingly described his decision, starting with police reports and witnesses. Community members who attended the presentation said the prosecutor relied too heavily on police accounts and disregarded what others said they saw.

An autopsy revealed that Jamar Clark, 24, was killed by a single gunshot wound to the head.

Clark’s death sparked repeated protests in Minneapolis, and after the decision not to charge either officer, demonstrations were quickly announced for Wednesday evening. Police said Clark was the suspect in an assault when he encountered the two officers on Nov. 15, and that he was interfering with paramedics trying to treat the victim when he was shot. Protesters had demanded that the case not go to a grand jury, which operates in secret. Freeman decided the issue on his own. The FBI, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Minnesota and the Department of Justice are conducting a separate federal investigation to determine whether police intentionally violated Clark’s civil rights through excessive force. Why are women more religious than men? Globally, more women than men identify with a religion, pray daily and say that religion is “very important” to them, according to data from the Pew Research Center. Around the world, 83.4 percent of women say they identify with a religion, compared with 79.9 percent of men. But why? In the past, some researchers have argued that biology plays the most important role in this religious gender gap. But the Pew study — which surveys Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews and the religiously unaffiliated across 192 countries — suggests that biology isn’t the only factor. The Pew study shows big differences in the religious gender gap across different cultures and observes that women’s religiosity varies somewhat depending on whether they work or stay home — a sign that religious beliefs might be affected by environment. This religious gender gap is even more pronounced in the U.S., which is more religious in general than other advanced economies. According to Pew, 64 percent of American women but only 47 percent of American men say they pray daily — compared with 30 percent of women and 28 percent of men in Canada and 15 percent of women and 9 percent of men in France. In the U.S., 68 percent of atheists are men. ANA SWANSON

POLITICS Frustrated Republicans grappled with new fears about Donald Trump’s impact on their party Wednesday, as his campaign rivals targeted his punitive plan for fighting abortion and extraordinary defense of his campaign manager who police say assaulted a female reporter. Concern rippled through Republican circles nationwide, yet few dared criticize the GOP front-runner directly when pressed, leery of confronting the man who may well lead their election ticket in November. Their silence underscored the deep worries plaguing the party’s leaders — particularly its most prominent women — who are growing increasingly concerned that a Trump presidential nomination could not only cost the 2016 election but also tarnish the party brand for a generation of women and young people. “A nominee who cannot speak to women cannot win,” said New Hampshire party chairwoman Jennifer Horn, though declining to rebuke Trump by name. Trump added to his challenge when he told MSNBC during the taping of a town hall-style event in Wisconsin that abortions should be banned and, if they are, women who get them should receive “some form of punishment.” That sparked an immediate backlash, and Trump’s campaign quickly backtracked, releasing a statement that said only those who perform abortions would be “held legally responsible, not the woman.” The abortion comments came as Trump questioned the findings of Jupiter, Fla., police, who charged his closest political adviser, Corey Lewandowski, with misdemeanor battery on Tuesday after examining surveillance

video of an incident, in which reporter Michelle Fields said she was grabbed and shoved. The police report said the woman’s arm revealed “bruising from what appeared to be several finger marks indicating a grabbing-type injury.” “I don’t know who created those bruises,” Trump said Wednesday. As Trump assailed Fields, Republican rival Ted Cruz was surrounded by his wife, mother, two daughters and even their nanny in what he called a “celebration of women”as he courted Wisconsin voters ahead of the state’s highstakes primary next Tuesday. Women favored President Barack Obama by 11 points over GOP nominee Mitt Romney in 2012, a divide highlighted in the Republican National Committee’s post-election study. “Our inability to win their votes is losing us elections,” the report’s authors wrote. Yet Trump would fare worse among women than Romney in a general election, according to

Trump on abortion WHAT TRUMP SAID: In a heated

exchange with MSNBC host Chris Matthews on Wednesday, Trump said, “you have to ban” abortion and “there has to be some form of punishment” for women who violate such a restriction. BACKTRACKING: Within hours, Trump’s campaign released two separate statements, ultimately saying he believes abortion providers — not their patients — should be the ones punished. “My position has not changed,” he argued in both statements. “Like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.” PRO-LIFE STANCE: Trump’s remarks were assailed by abortion-rights supporters, but they also unsettled anti-abortion activists. The March for Life, which organizes antiabortion events, said on Twitter: “No pro-lifer would ever want to punish a woman who has chosen abortion. This is against the very nature of what we are about.” (AP)

The RNC recommended that prominent female elected leaders be featured to promote the Republican brand, listing several including South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. Haley’s office said she was “unavailable for comment” Wednesday. Other female Republican officeholders who didn’t respond to AP requests for comment included Sens. Leading Democrat Hillary Clinton, meanwhile, attacked Trump’s rhetoric on women and minorities as she campaigned in New York. “Just listen to Donald Trump,” she declared. “He plays coy with white supremacists. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk is poised to reveal his newest creation, the Model 3, at an event today. Starting at $35,000, the car represents Tesla’s first electric vehicle aimed at mainstream consumers. How it fares will have a major impact on Tesla’s longterm future as a company — and on the future of electric cars more broadly. The Model 3 represents the culmination of a yearslong strategy by Musk to stimulate a huge shift in global car culture that emphasizes sustainability. Although the company had focused first on high-end cars — the Tesla Roadster, the Model S, and the Model X — the ultimate goal was to bring the electric car to the masses. So for Tesla to have reached this point is, naturally, a very big deal in the company’s history. Although it won’t begin manufacturing until 2017, and other car makers such as Chevrolet and Hyundai are trying to beat Tesla to market, Tesla will perform well if it can successfully produce a high-quality product for the average driver. If it takes off, Tesla’s new car could also accelerate the spread of electric charging stations that would make electric vehicles of all kinds a more realistic alternative. And in that respect, the Model 3 could do for electric cars what the iPhone did for smartphones, igniting demand for a whole new class of technology. BRIAN FUNG

THREE POINTERS

Highlights at the plate

Strasburg feels good, looks great NATIONALS After Stephen Strasburg struck out nine Yankees in five innings last week, a rival scout who watches the Nationals regularly declared that the right-hander had the best stuff he had seen all spring. Strasburg’s changeup was making big-league hitters look like kids swinging blindfolded at a piñata. “Superb,” the scout said of the strikeout pitch. A week later, in a game ultimately wiped out by rain, Strasburg was back at his swing-andmiss ways. Facing the near-complete Cardinals’ lineup, he punched out five in three innings. His command was solid and his pitches moving well. “I think Stras is going to have a big year,” new Nationals manager Dusty Baker said, “a real big year.”

Strasburg, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, is coming off perhaps the best stretch of his professional career, which began when the Nationals drafted him first overall in 2009. In his last 10 starts of 2015, he posted a video game-like 1.90 ERA and struck out 92 while walking only eight. This spring, he has looked strong, too. Not counting Tuesday’s now-nonexistent start, Strasburg struck out 19 and walked five in 14 spring innings. The Nationals open the regular season Monday in Atlanta. Strasburg’s first start is expected to be the home opener, against the Marlins, a week from today. “Everything is feeling good,” said Strasburg, who was limited to 23 starts last season because of oblique and trapezoid injuries. “Pitches are getting right where they need to be. Just trying to stay right where I’m at right now.” Baker, a manager for 20 seasons, may be good for Strasburg.

DAVE TEPPS (EXPRESS) JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

After a sharp spring, Baker thinks the righty will have ‘a real big year’

With the Nationals having finished spring training Wednesday — they led the Grapefruit League with an 18-4-3 record — here is a look at some of their best offensive performances.

Stephen Strasburg, 27, has been very effective this spring after ending the 2015 season with one of the most dominant stretches of his career.

The likely batting order The Nationals’ last couple of lineup cards preview what Dusty Baker probably will use to start the season. The order is CF Ben Revere, 3B Anthony Rendon, RF Bryce Harper, 1B Ryan Zimmerman, 2B Daniel Murphy, LF Jayson Werth, C Wilson Ramos and SS Danny Espinosa. The first, third and fifth hitters are left-handed. (TWP)

Baker is perceptive and a strong judge of personality. He is pushing Strasburg, a perfectionist and hard worker, to relax more and enjoy his successes. But on Tuesday, he wanted to

work as much as he could. After he spun those three scoreless innings on a hot and muggy day interrupted by rain, he went to the batting cages to simulate a few more innings in an even hotter area. “I’m going to continue to work throughout the season,” said Strasburg, 27. “You’re looking to peak in September, October, the second half. “It’s like I’ve done it enough times to know you’re still going to be building through the course of the year. As far as getting the normal workload every five days, I feel like I’m ready for that.” JAMES WAGNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

3 The hit king With 22 hits and a .458 average, fourth outfielder Michael A. Taylor was the club’s best hitter. He’ll press Jayson Werth and Ben Revere for playing time.

2 Pop off the bench Clint Robinson, 31, was an effective Nats pinch-hitter in 2015 after years in the minors. He had 10 homers last season and tied Taylor for the lead this spring with four.

1 Revere is here The addition of center fielder Ben Revere, who hit .368 this spring, provides a leadoff man with speed (31 stolen bases in 2015) who hits for average (.295 career).

SCANDAL

JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Showtime has new meaning for the Lakers

Although nose tackle Terrance Knighton made 15 starts for the Redskins last season, he wore down late in games.

Redskins, Knighton talk but he remains in limbo Club might want more versatility on line than ‘Pot Roast’ can provide REDSKINS Free agent nose tackle Terrance Knighton visited Redskins Park on Wednesday to meet with team officials about returning for a second season. But he left with no deal and an agreement was not believed imminent, two people with knowledge of the situation said. The Patriots also are interested in him and hosted him Monday. He was believed to be weighing his options Wednesday night. Knighton, 29, signed a oneyear, $4.45 million deal last season and had hoped to work

out an agreement on a multi-year contract with the Redskins this offseason. Redskins officials were lukewarm and this month told him they planned to go in a different direction, although he still wanted to return. The Redskins had hoped that Knighton would make a greater impact in addition to handling a more significant workload in 2015. He had 29 tackles with 11/2 sacks while making 15 starts. But he tended to wear down late in games, and coaches believed his weight was a problem. Knighton, nicknamed “Pot Roast,” weighed around 360 pounds last season. Knighton reportedly has slimmed down significantly

and believes that he can handle a bigger workload. Nose tackle remains a need for the Redskins. However, they want a player capable of playing other positions on the line. The 2015 defense used a fourman front on roughly 75 percent of snaps. Coach Jay Gruden said the team was moving away from a traditional nose tackle and that defensive coordinator Joe Barry wants greater versatility from his linemen. Coaches would prefer an interior lineman who can line up over the center as a nose tackle and shift over and play tackle in a four-man front. MIKE JONES

The Lakers don’t merely lack talent; maturity is an issue, too. The revelation that rookie D’Angelo Russell, below, — the No. 2 pick in the draft whose readiness for NBA life already was in doubt — covertly recorded teammate Nick Young (aka Swaggy P) talking about cheating on his girlfriend, rapper Iggy Azalea, has isolated Russell from the rest of the club. “It’s about as bad as it can get,” a source told ESPN. “There were trust issues already. Now there’s no trust.” Some thought the discord contributed to the Lakers’ 48-point loss at Utah on Monday. Oh, and what does Azalea think? Go to People on Page 52. (EXPRESS)

Ngakoue tries to raise his stock at pro day Defensive end Yannick Ngakoue went through a gauntlet of drills during Maryland’s pro day for 27 NFL scouts on Wednesday. He is projected as a mid-round pick by most analysts in the draft April 28-30. He has visits scheduled with the Jets, Jaguars, Eagles and Titans. At the scouting combine in Indianapolis he graded out at 5.39, which corresponds to a backup or eventual starter, according to NFL.com. Washington’s starting backcourt of John Wall and Bradley Beal went 1-for-9 from 3-point range in the 102-94 defeat while the Warriors’ Steph Curry and Klay Thompson made 8 of 16 from beyond the arc. W/ SPECIAL GUEST GABE LOPEZ

The founders of Buredo made a wise decision from the outset: The downtown operation wouldn’t be a fast-casual free-for-all, in which customers potentially concoct some sort of junior-high cafeteria dare rolled up in seaweed. Instead, owners Travis Elton and Mike Haddad have collaborated with two chefs to develop a carefully curated line of monster maki-sushi rolls, each engineered for maximum flavor. You could argue that Elton and Haddad didn’t take their chef-driven concept far enough and insist on tighter portion controls. After all, a bloated Buredo roll, no matter how deliciously conceived, is almost guaranteed to burst at the seams at some point when you bite into it. It makes for a messy experience and, frequently, an out-ofbalance one. Still, if this sushi burrito movement is going to last longer than RGIII’s career, it needs a committed upstart like Buredo, which will, we suspect, only get better as the years roll by. Less than a decade old, Taylor Gourmet has already attained D.C. institution status. You might be tempted to chalk that up to Taylor’s ability to reproduce like fruit flies. The hoagie chain now has 10 outlets, including one at Reagan National, so you can have one last Italian roast pork sandwich before heading off to some exotic locale. But a concept doesn’t expand without demand, and Washingtonians continue to frequent Taylor for the reasons they always have: Founders Casey Patten and David Mazza focus on fresh ingredients, including the rolls produced daily just for Taylor. Even better, the owners insist on rolling out new items each quarter, adding a little seasonal, chefdriven obsessiveness to a chain that could easily coast on its reputation as the place that introduced high-quality Philly hoagies to the District. Has the brand suffered from its growth spurt? Yes, it can be frustratingly inconsistent. But it’s still good enough that the president has made multiple visits. Carter’s wonders never cease

The actress returns to Kennedy Center with her one-woman show

STAGE Lynda Carter is very excited that her song “Good Neighbor,” which she co-wrote for the video game “Fallout 4,” was nominated for a National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers Award this year. “It really makes me relevant!” Carter says. It’s hard to believe that relevance is even on Carter’s radar. Thanks to her 1975-79 television show, for a generation — for a few generations, if we’re being honest — Lynda Carter is Wonder Woman. In the years since

If you go to one of Carter’s shows, there’s a chance your butt may touch the same seat her butt touched. “Before every show, even in rooms I’ve played a lot, while we’re warming up or doing a sound check, I sit in the various far reaches” of the theater, Carter says. “I sit down and I look at the point of view of where the audience sits, so I have a sense of what they’re looking at. So when I’m onstage, if I know I’m being blocked by another musician, I’ll step out or move so I know that person sitting back there can see me.” But does she really worry about how she’s seen? Does Lynda Carter, WHO IS WONDER WOMAN, actually think that “Fallout 4” is what makes her relevant these days? “At this point in my life, I don’t really worry about anything,” she says. “Someone asked me, ‘Don’t you worry about your legacy being threatened by the new Wonder Woman [‘Batman v Superman’s’ Gal Gadot]?’ and I said, ‘I don’t worry about it at all.’ More power to Wonder Woman.”

the series, she’s worked in film, done extensive voice-over work and released two jazz albums. Her one-woman show, “Lynda Carter: Long-Legged Woman,” returns to the Kennedy Center this weekend. Although Carter tours nearly every year, there’s very little repetition in her show. “As soon as I launch one [tour], I start collecting ideas for the next year,” she says. And she collects from everywhere. This year’s show includes her band’s version of “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing” (with Carter’s impressively rumbly imitation of Chris Isaak), “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys” and some Billie Holiday. “I think if I have a theme, it’s ‘shuffle.’ ”

Friday is April Fools’ Day, a perfect time to take stock of comedy in D.C. This weekend, the city gets a second proper comedy venue; two weeks from now, a new homegrown comedy festival launches; and in June, the Kennedy Center stages its first festival of laughs. With so much going on, we wanted to help make your humor choices a little easier. The city’s new funny business

Drafthouse Comedy gives D.C. another room dedicated to laughter

COMEDY Since Greg Godbout bought and renovated the Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse in 2005, the venue has built a reputation for bringing rising comics to D.C. before they become famous — names like Amy Schumer, Trevor Noah and Kumail Nanjiani. There’s only one problem: Godbout, 43, doesn’t actually bring them to D.C., but to Arlington, a distinction many out-of-town comics note while performing at the second-run movie theater. “There’s a ton of people in D.C. that just won’t cross the [Potomac River] — I jokingly call it the ocean,” Godbout says. “So comics we’ve booked for years … they go, ‘I’ve got a lot of fans in D.C. who don’t have a car and they’re saying, When can I see you in D.C.?’ ” His solution? The Drafthouse Comedy Theater, a narrow, barebones black box space in the heart of downtown D.C. that opens this weekend after two months of construction- and liquor license-related delays. “I don’t view this as a comedy club,” says Godbout, who also works as the chief technology officer at the Environmental Protection Agency. “I think the comedy club model is dead, actually. We’re a black box art theater that’s specifically doing comedy arts.”

Loosely modeled after the Upright Citizens Brigade’s New York theaters, the Drafthouse Comedy experience will differ from what comedy fans might expect from a trip to Arlington Cinema and Drafthouse or the DC Improv. First, on most weekends, there will be two headliners a night and three shows on Fridays and Saturdays, unlike the traditional one headliner doing two shows a night. Most shows will sell out at 155 seats (some high-profile comedians may push capacity to 175) and the staff plans to experiment with different seating arrangements. (Chairs will usually be lined up next to each other in rows with no tables.) Stand-up shows will run about 80 minutes and often feature a local opening act, and doors will open 20 minutes prior to showtime. (One exception: Doors will open 45 minutes before shows this weekend to help the venue’s staff work out any kinks.) Drafthouse Comedy won’t serve food, but Godbout says it will offer “highend concessions” and a full bar, including three local draft beers. “It’s a very different model,” he says. “I want people in and out. I want to be part of their night, not their whole night. … Everyone thinks it’s crazy but our goal is not to over-serve everyone inside the theater. We literally want them coming in, seeing a show [and] then leaving.” Besides stand-up, Godbout plans to book long-form improv,

BYRON BOWERS: An L.A.based comedian who has opened for Dave Chappelle, Hannibal Buress and Eric Andre, Bowers headlines three of the venue’s six opening-weekend shows. Fri., 9 & 11 p.m., $25;

Sat., 7 p.m., $25.

one-man off-Broadway shows and even carnival-style sideshows at the new space. (Godbout handles the booking; his sister, Christina Godbout, manages the place.) Local comics and promoters can rent the room to put on their own shows as part of the Drafthouse Comedy Arts Cooperative. The venue is the first comedy club-like space to open in the city since the Riot Act Comedy Theater closed in 2012, less than

a year after it opened. Godbout doesn’t buy the argument that D.C. can’t support two comedy rooms. “[Riot Act] didn’t have a clear segment that they were specifically selling to or carving out as a space,” he says. “It’s a little different for us. I already have those locked-in relationships and I’m just increasing my volume.” Now, Godbout can bring those comics he’s been booking in Arlington to D.C. One idea is to have a higher-profile comedian play the new venue on a Thursday, then do Arlington on Friday and Saturday. “Inevitably what will happen [at Drafthouse Comedy] is there will be a pressure for bigger comics to play here,” Godbout says. “Hopefully — and this is a good problem to have — we’ll find that in five years we’re crowding out this space.” RUDI GREENBERG (EXPRESS) Drafthouse Comedy, 1100 13th St. NW; drafthousecomedy.com.

A homecoming for D.C.’s funniest at 202 D.C. IS A GREAT PLACE FOR ASPIRING COMEDIANS TO HONE THEIR CRAFT. “Comics love an audience that is quiet and attentive,” comedian Ahmed

Vallejos says of District comedy crowds. Vallejos is one of seven local comics who helped organize the 202 Comedy Festival, which runs from April 13 to 16 at various D.C. venues. The inaugural event spotlights comedians from the area who have since decamped to New York or L.A., as well as many locals who may be on their way to comedy fame and fortune. Here’s a rundown of three of the festival’s formerly local comedians, all of whom miss D.C. for one reason or another.

Aparna Nancherla You might not guess it from her laid-back comedy style, but Nancherla is a classic striver from Northern Virginia who earned a liberal arts degree from Amherst College. She moved back in with her parents after college, working her way through the D.C. comedy scene. After a stint in L.A., she jettisoned to New York, where she landed a job writing for “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” In July, she’ll release her first comedy album, “Just Putting This Out There.” When did you live in D.C.? I grew up in Northern Virginia and I lived with my parents — glamour! — from 2005 to 2010 after college. What was your D.C. day job? I was an editor at a trade magazine about workplace training. Intrigue! What do you miss about D.C.? Noodles & Company and my parents, not in that order. What do you not miss about D.C.? Having to swipe your subway card on entrance and exit. What was the hardest thing about moving to L.A.? Figuring out how to get my car across the country. And how to love avocados more. Best way to get from N.Y. to D.C.? Vamoose bus, but also the train if I recently got paid. See Nancherla perform at the 202’s Big Show at the Black Cat (April 16, 9 p.m., $25).

What was the hardest thing about moving to N.Y.? Absolutely nothing. Well, except not knowing where I’d get a job. … A buddy let me crash on his couch until I figured everything out. How do you describe D.C. crowds? Pretty damn smart. And sometimes pretty damn stuckup. But for the most part [they’re] fun as hell. What are your feelings on cherry blossoms? Cherry blossoms cause so much mayhem and traffic in the city. I get it; they smell good and they look pretty, but that doesn’t mean [they get to] make my life harder. That said, I can’t wait to take selfies with those sexy pink trees. See him at the Black Cat (April 16, 9 p.m., $25).

Andy Haynes Haynes laces his self-deprecating comedy with moments of Trumpian bravado. A case in point: In 2014, Haynes named his first comedy album “Greatest Hits.” The comedian deserves his kudos, however: Though he was kicked off “Last Comic Standing” in 2008, he went on to earn spots on “Conan” and “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon,” as well as his own “Half Hour” special on Comedy Central. When did you live in DC? 2005 to 2007. What was your day job? I was a barista at Tryst, and I did the books for the Washington DCJCC Preschool. What do you miss the most? Go-go, although I never went to an actual live show. I just had an affinity for it, especially early Wale mixtapes. What do you not miss at all? Really swampy nights in the summer. Big slices and fistfights on 18th Street on Saturday nights. Georgetown. How would you rank comedy crowds in D.C.? The best. Smart, generally liberal, but not space cadets. Seriously the most diverse place I’ve performed in the country. What was the hardest thing about moving to L.A.? I think it was the pressure to always be great. See him at the Big Hunt (April 13, 8 p.m., $10).

Need expert advice? Don’t ask these guys. Jake and Amir are here to help — even though they’re not qualified PODCASTS The way they tell it, best friends and roomies Jake Hurwitz and Amir Blumenfeld are just two losers who sit in their family room and talk into microphones for a living. They host an advice podcast and yet they aren’t experts in much at all. “We realized we’re not smart about anything, so all we really had was to give general advice,” Hurwitz says. “We figured the advice would end up being funny because it didn’t have to be professional. … We didn’t realize how insane the questions would be.” After years of making popular videos as Jake and Amir for comedy website CollegeHumor, the pair entered the podcasting world in 2013 as hosts of “If I Were You” and co-founders of HeadGum Podcast Network, home of 34 shows and counting. For their podcast, Hurwitz and Blumenfeld read emails

Quandaries include everything from “What do I text this girl I like?” to “My sister caught me watching incest porn … help!” The idea for “If I Were You” was inspired by NPR’s legendary show “Car Talk,” Hurwitz says. “Nobody listens to [that] show for the guests,” he says. “They listen for these two brothers’ relationship and their banter. And I was like, ‘This is me and Amir’s strong suit too.’ ” Set to embark on a four-city live podcast tour that kicks off in Washington next week, Hurwitz

and Blumenfeld have their fingers firmly on the pulse of the digital comedy scene — even if they can’t quite put a finger on how to describe their humor. “[It’s] irreverent, lowbrow, brilliant,” Blumenfeld says. “Sort of like dumb comedy for smart people, smart comedy for dumb people. Just left of center, middle of the road …” “Fiscally conservative,” Hurwitz jumps in. “Socially rightwing …” “Extra-medium,” Blumenfeld adds. The two riff off each other with ease, bump-set-spiking their bits like a two-man volleyball comedy team. While they like to remind their listeners that they’re not well-versed in anything and don’t know why they host an advice show, Blumenfeld says he “tends to think of us as expert 20-somethings because we’ve been doing it for a decade.” “So at the very least we’re good at that.” SAM TABACHNIK (FOR EXPRESS) Howard Theatre, 620 T St. NW; Wed., 8 p.m., $20.

The state of this union is funny STAGE After more than 12,000 performances at the Kennedy Center, the musical whodunit “Shear Madness” is taking its first big break since its run began nearly 30 years ago. A new musical comedy, “The Second City’s Almost Accurate Guide to America,” will take its place from June 19 to July 31. A joint project of the Kennedy

Center and Chicago’s famed Second City improv troupe, “Almost Accurate Guide to America” may even replace “Shear Madness” permanently, says Matthew Winer, the Kennedy Center’s director of special programming. “Our hope is that we are creating something that attracts school groups and local comedy fans,” Winer says. Laughing — all the way through June If you don’t make it to the new Drafthouse venue or D.C.’s two newest comedy festivals, there are still plenty of ways to have a laugh in the next three months. Here are nine. RUDI GREENBERG (EXPRESS) APRIL 16

Jen Kirkman A former “Chelsea Lately” regular, Jen Kirkman has stolen several episodes of “Drunk History” as one of the show’s most reliably inebriated narrators. Kirkman’s second book, “I Know What I’m Doing — and Other Lies I Tell Myself,” brings her to D.C. for a night of stories that didn’t make the book, a reading of a choice excerpt and an audience Q&A. Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, 600 I St. NW; April 16, 8 p.m., $20-$25. APRIL 19

Michael Che In 2014, after a brief stint on “The Daily Show,” Michael Che joined “Saturday Night Live’s” “Weekend Update” as co-anchor. A perfect foil for Colin Jost, Che brought a level of laid-back coolness to the desk, and a voice that could address the riots in Ferguson, Mo., and the Black Lives Matter movement with authority. Not that he’s above getting silly. Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW; April 19, 7:30 p.m., $20-$25.

Tracy Morgan Kennedy Center, 2700 F St. NW; April 22, 8 p.m., $79-$99.

Last fall at the Kennedy Center, Tracy Morgan made one of his first public appearances since the 2014 accident that left him in a coma for days. Paying tribute to Mark Twain Prize recipient Eddie Murphy, Morgan — as sharp and goofy as ever — was the only performer other than Murphy to get a standing ovation. In April, he’ll return to the venue for a stand-up show on his “Picking Up the Pieces” tour, which features new material.

APRIL 28-30

Lewis Black It’s an election year, which means that Silver Spring native Lewis Black is angrier than usual. “The Daily Show” fixture, who still appears in his cantankerous “Back in Black” segments, is bringing his “The Emperor’s New Clothes: The Naked Truth” tour to D.C. for three nights. Expect a mix of personal stories, topical jabs at presidential hopefuls, frustration about the world at large and plenty of F-bombs. Warner

podcast is back on the road for a series of live recordings. For this tour, Aukerman has recruited two of his most frequent guests: standup Paul F. Tompkins and improviser Lauren Lapkus, who will each play one of their famed, often absurd, occasionally unhinged characters every night. Aukerman will egg them on — dropping bad puns and fan-favorite jokes along the way. Lincoln Theatre, 1215 U St. NW; May 9, 8 p.m., sold out.

David Alan Grier Thanks to his role as the patriarch on NBC’s “The Carmichael Show,” David Alan Grier is having a bit of a resurgence. It’s a deserved one: Grier was a crucial piece of “In Living Color” and has proved himself to be a versatile actor, even appearing as the Cowardly Lion in last year’s live

Nikki Glaser DC Improv, 1140 Connecticut Ave. NW; April 29 & 30, 7:30 & 9:45 p.m., $25.

If you call Nikki Glaser a “sex comedian,” she won’t mind. Like her friend Amy Schumer, Glaser sees the label as positive, openly discussing taboo topics on her Comedy Central series, “Not Safe with Nikki Glaser.” For the show, she’s shared her awkward sexts, gone to a foot fetish party and even hooked her parents up to a lie detector to ask questions most of us would rather not know the answers to.

Flight of the Conchords We don’t know much about the New Zealand folk-comedy duo’s latest reunion tour, dubbed “Flight of the Conchords Sing Flight of the Conchords,” but you should expect to hear classics from their two albums and HBO series, along with new tunes. And given the January death of David Bowie, don’t be surprised if Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie bust out their tribute to the Thin White Duke. Everybody’s talking (and it’s not rude) Annapolis Film Festival focuses just as much on the discussion part FILM Lucy Spiegel knows the secret to a good film festival: “Planting good seeds, and harvesting good crops.” Spiegel is the president of the board of the Annapolis Film Festival, which is back for its fourth year this weekend. Even though the festival is still young, it has built a solid reputation, not only locally but up and down the East Coast. Spiegel credits its success to the movies and the people who choose them. The festival’s selection board “has great taste and energy to pull in the kinds of films that are right on the tip; they’re really on their way up,” Spiegel says. “The fact that this year we have an Oscar-nominated film in ‘Mustang,’ for instance. The fact that we have a film coming right out of South by Southwest, which is ‘Waiting.’ The fact that we have Christopher Walken’s new film [‘One More Time’] as our opening act. It’s amazing.” The festival places heavy emphasis on its panel discussions, Q&A sessions and talkbacks. “We are more than just a buffet of films,” Spiegel says. “We talk to the people who make the films, we talk to the people who sell the films, we talk to the people who

want to be in films.” The festival has always had an African-American Experience shorts showcase, which Spiegel says was particularly important last year in light of events like the Baltimore riots. She expects this year’s program to be just as popular, given the growth of the Black Lives Matter movement. “It’s a time for everyone to talk about the subjects we see on the front pages of our newspapers and on our televisions all the time,” she says of the showcase. “The fact that it brings the passion and the concerns of the community

out there where everybody can talk about it is phenomenal.” Spiegel says the Annapolis community at large made the festival feel welcome right from the start. “We could not do this without the community support,” she says. “For a town that was all about the Naval Academy and sailing, they have really taken to film and taken it to their hearts in a big way.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS) Annapolis Film Festival, various venues in Annapolis; Thu.-Sun., $50 for day pass, $115 for general pass.

West End Cinema’s reopening

indies Landmark Theatres’ West End Cinema (2301 M St. NW) has abandoned its +arties charmingly decrepit aesthetic in favor of just being charming. After extensive

renovations, the three-screen theater reopens Friday with big and comfy leather chairs, larger screens, better carpeting and — most importantly — wine and beer. It’s having an open house Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.; screenings resume Friday with South by Southwest success story “Krisha,” as well as Oscar nominee “Embrace of the Serpent” and best picture winner “Spotlight.” (Remember, the place is still tiny, so it’s not advisable to leave ticket-buying until the last minute.) K.P.K. (EXPRESS)

EDWARD CULLEN: It’s easy to take potshots at Edward and his “Twilight” clan. But if Stephenie Meyer didn’t want us to make fun of her vampires, she shouldn’t have coated them in glitter. GREMLINS: Before giving a pet as a gift, make sure the recipient is responsible enough to care for it. With a fish, for example, it’s important to keep the bowl clean to keep the fish healthy. With a Mogwai, it’s important to keep it out of bright light to avoid unearthly destruction. HOMUNCULI: In “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” these creatures live in the basement and demand teeth, making the fact that we tell kids a flying creature comes into their bedrooms and roots around under their pillow at night much less creepy. GRABOIDS: Giant earthworms with a taste for humans are the villains in “Tremors,” and they’re here to take revenge on anyone who ever baited a fishing hook with a live wiggler. FLYING ALIENS: In the Vin Diesel flick “Pitch Black,” deadly creatures track their prey through scent and only come out at night; of course, there’s a monthlong eclipse on the horizon. Shoulda checked that Outer Space Farmer’s Almanac, Vin Diesel!

‘Making a Murderer’s’ Dean Strang and Jerry Buting

During her frequent visits to Washington, sitarist Anoushka Shankar has performed in a variety of settings in which she’s celebrated the profound influence of her late father, sitar virtuoso and composer Ravi Shankar. Friday’s performance by the five-time Grammy Award nominee will be devoted to music drawn from her new album, “Land of Gold,” a suite-like collection of original tunes inspired by Shankar’s deep concern for refugees around the world. Fans of Netflix’s true-crime story “Making a Murderer” can get up close with Steven Avery’s defense attorneys, Dean Strang and Jerry Buting, as the two stop by on their “A Conversation on Justice” tour, which will hopefully shed more light on the series and Avery. ‘Game of Thrones’ party

When Carrie Rodriguez performed at the South by Southwest music festival in Texas two weeks ago, the hometown Austinite showcased songs from her new album, “Lola.” Tucking her violin beneath her chin, she played the bolero intro to “Frio en al Alma” (“Chill in My Soul”) and then sang the melancholy song in Spanish. The song was memorably recorded by Rodriguez’s greataunt, Eva Garza, in the 1940s, and on this tour, Rodriguez is exploring her family’s Mexican heritage.

The sixth season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” won’t debut for a few more weeks. (And don’t even get us started on the next book.) But you can get an early taste of Seven Kingdoms, the next Ommegang Game of Thrones beer, at this official release party. In addition to sipping the hoppy wheat ale, wannabe Westerosi can get Ommegang glassware and compete in a costume contest. Penn Social, 801 E St. NW; Fri., 6 p.m., free (beers priced individually).

Organizers of the National Cherry Blossom Festival are calling this a celebration of 50 years of kite flying on the Mall, dating to the first Smithsonian Kite Festival in 1967. But an event like this doesn’t need a bigger hook: Seeing colorful kites take over the sky above America’s Front Yard as families get in on the fun is incentive enough to make it to the Mall for this one.

Kwame Onwuachi of the forthcoming Shaw Bijou is launching an outdoor pop-up at Union Market. Proceeds from the $15 lunch, which includes a mini-cheesesteak, tamarindglazed wings, waffle fries and a house-made soda, will go to No Kid Hungry. Onwuachi was

From left to right: Glen Powell, Wyatt Russell, Blake Jenner, James Quinton Johnson and Temple Baker in “Everybody Wants Some!!”

They’re real team players The cast of ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ created characters on the fly FILM It’s going to be tough for critics to discuss the plot of “Everybody Wants Some!!” Because there really isn’t one. Here’s what happens: Freshman Jake (Blake Jenner) shows up to play for a Texas college baseball team. Four days pass. The end. It’s another example of writerdirector Richard Linklater’s signature style; the film, out Friday, has been dubbed the “spiritual heir” to his meandering, beloved 1993 film “Dazed and Confused.” That style doesn’t come from the editing room or even the script; instead, it germinates long before the cameras start rolling.

“Everyone came in knowing who their character was, but no one really fleshed out who they were going to be until everybody started chiming in” during rehearsals, says Wyatt Russell, who plays the team’s, um, herbal aficionado and spiritual guru, Willoughby. “The group as a whole informed what everybody’s individual characteristics were.” “In these rehearsals, everyone would be like, ‘Oh, dude, that is a good idea!’ and then we’d go outside and talk about some stuff and then come back in and throw an idea out and hopefully Rick’s response would be positive,” says Glen Powell, who plays the impressively mustachioed upperclassman pitcher Finnegan. “It was very collaborative with the team, but also with the director.” The word “team” crops up a lot when talking with these actors,

3M

“So much of [the process] was like the energy of passing the ball back and forth.” JAMES QUINTON JOHNSON, on the collaboration among the actors

and they rarely mean the on-field version. “So much of [the process] was like the energy of passing the ball back and forth,” says James Quinton Johnson, who plays infielder Dale Douglas. “This whole story starts to create itself within the guidelines that Rick had already set. And then Rick is just looking for the greatest hits.” The loose narrative could have presented challenges for actors

used to dealing with traditional scenes, scripts and motivations; instead, the three say it gave them a new way to collaborate. “The story doesn’t have a traditional plot, so when you’re trying to serve the story, the only way you can do that is by serving the team,” Russell says. “It was ‘How do I make this best for the team?’ because that’s what the story is about.” And serving the team, Powell says, means not paying much attention to what might survive the editing room. “If you worry about what’s going to end up in the final cut, it’s like you’re thinking about the endgame,” he says. “And the process of making the movie was so much damn fun that at the end of the day the actual movie is just a celebration of what we got to do together.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

STREAMING WARS

The number of paid global subscribers that Tidal, Jay Z’s music streaming service, has garnered as of its one-year anniversary on Wednesday, Billboard reports. It still lags behind competitors Apple Music, which claims 11 million paid subscribers, and Spotify, with 30 million. Tidal also released streaming numbers for Kanye West’s “The Life of Pablo,” which surpassed 250 million streams in its first 10 days of release. WASHINGTONPOST.COM TV CRITIC

Hulu’s ‘The Path’ portrays family life inside a cult “The Path” is a slow but steady new drama from Hulu about a family in upstate New York that is deeply enmeshed in a self-help movement called the Meyerists, a commune with all the telltale signs of being a scary cult. But “The Path” comes on gently rather than sensationally. Watching the first episodes is not unlike the strange experience of attending an unfamiliar church, observing the bliss on the faces of true believers and wondering: Do I buy any of this? It’s also a reminder that new TV shows are desperate to recruit followers. They had me at Aaron Paul. The “Breaking Bad” star plays Eddie Lane, who first came to the Meyerists as a troubled teen, and wound up marrying Sarah (“True Detective’s” Michelle Monaghan). Created by Jessica Goldberg (credits include “Parenthood”) and executive produced by Jason Katims (credits include “Parenthood” and “Friday Night Lights”), “The Path” works best as an intense psychological study of an extended family whose members equate faith and loyalty with happiness. The Meyerists share similarities with the Church of Scientology, and also encompass the lingo and tactics of notable self-help and religious movements. The first two of “The Path’s” 10 episodes began streaming Wednesday on Hulu. New episodes will be available weekly. HANK STUEVER

TODAY: Skies turn partly to mostly cloudy as a cold front approaches, and by afternoon there’s a slight chance of a shower. Highs surge into the 70s as breezes from the south increase to near 15 mph. Shower chances increase tonight with a thunderstorm possible as well, as southerly winds ramp up the humidity levels.

So it’s just coincidence that Hills was humming ‘Formation’ all day? Beyonce reportedly got a visitor on the set of her new music video last week: presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. Chris Brown took aim at R&B singer Kehlani on Tuesday night, the same day she shared that she had attempted suicide after she was accused of cheating on Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving with her ex. “There is no attempting suicide,” Brown tweeted. “Doing s--- for sympathy so them comments under your pics don’t look so bad.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A Snapchat video taken by Los Angeles Lakers star rookie D’Angelo Russell that appears to show teammate Nick Young confessing to cheating on his fiancee, Iggy Azalea, has torn the team — and potentially Young’s engagement — apart. Azalea tweeted about the video Wednesday morning, writing, “I see D’Angelo Russell is trending. … I actually liked his film. Thanks bro.” Sources told TMZ that the video, obtained and leaked by a third party, was shot months ago. They added that Azalea and Young are “not on good terms.” (Neither are the Lakers; see page 17.) (EXPRESS)
