joint those who really want to get high, he said. Adam Eidinger, the chief organizer of the event — and no stranger to arrests over marijuana policy — predicts there will be “dozens, if not hundreds, engaged in civil disobedience” by smoking pot Saturday outside 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. But in Obama’s last year in office, why is Eidinger organizing a protest? He said the smoke-in is the most aggressive way he could

“As a former cannabis (and current?) user, you know firsthand that cannabis does not belong in the Controlled Substances Act.” ADAM EIDINGER, the chief organizer of Saturday’s White House protest, in a letter to President Obama

think of to draw attention to the roughly 5 million marijuanarelated arrests since Obama took office. He also thinks that Obama must do more in his remaining time to remove marijuana from the country’s list of most-dangerous controlled substances. Without that change, decisions by states to legalize pot could be in jeopardy if a Republican wins the White House, Eidinger said. “Obama — he smokes, maybe not now, but he did smoke,” Eidinger said. “So for him to oversee an enforcement regime that has arrested 5 million people for marijuana. … I’m very motivated because I think it’s a discriminatory practice.” Not all advocates for marijuana legalization agree with Eidinger’s plan to smoke pot in front of the White House. In fact, none of the biggest national organizations plan to attend Saturday’s event. “Smoking marijuana outside the president’s house, around tourists and kids, is probably not a good way to get the president to do what you want,” said Tom Angell, head of the Marijuana Majority, a group promoting greater marijuana acceptance. THE DISTRICT Attention, senior class trip chaperones, cherry blossom lovers, and anyone else who may wander by the White House on Saturday: Brace yourself for a cloud of marijuana smoke — and, possibly, mass arrests. Organizers of the successful ballot measure that legalized pot last year in the District say they have had enough with President Barack Obama’s slog toward loosening marijuana laws. To protest, they are planning what they promise will be the first large-scale display of public pot smoking in the nation’s capital, with the intention of getting arrested. The event promises to be a spectacle. Construction was underway Wednesday on an inflatable, 51foot marijuana joint that protesters plan to carry onto Pennsylvania Avenue NW. A D.C. artist was trying to devise a way to place a fan inside to disperse marijuana smoke into the crowd. And if that doesn’t work, a backup option would be to zip up in the blow-up

‘A senseless act in the city. Cruel.’ Trooper shot, suspect killed in shootout at Richmond bus station

VIRGINIA One Virginia State Police trooper was critically injured and two civilians were wounded when a gunman opened fire Thursday afternoon at a Greyhound Bus Station in downtown Richmond, according to law enforcement authorities. The suspected gunman was shot and killed when troopers fired, police said. A state police spokeswoman, Corinne N. Geller, said only that the injured trooper suffered life-threatening injuries and that his family was on the way to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. She said the injured civilians suffered injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening. The shooting occurred in an area of the city known as the Diamond, after the nearby baseball stadium. Geller said a trooper and the suspect were talking in the station’s entranceway when the suspect “pulled out a gun and shot the trooper.” She did not comment on an apparent motive. Geller said two other troopers in the station fired back and the assailant was killed. She said a weapon was recovered.

Hundreds of people lined up outside Tesla’s D.C. location Thursday morning to put $1,000 down on the company’s newly announced Model 3 electric car — one they hadn’t even seen yet. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk was expected to reveal the new, less expensive Tesla model Thursday night. But before that, potential customers could go to a store and, with a $1,000 deposit, reserve a Model 3, which is set to be released in late 2017. The Internal Revenue Service provides tax credits of up to $7,500 for people who buy electric cars. But that credit starts phasing out when 200,000 people have purchased a vehicle, so only the first 200,000 who reserve the Tesla model will qualify.

FAIRFAX COUNTY A police officer charged with murder for shooting a man during a 2013 domestic standoff questioned himself afterward about whether he acted out of anger over his own deteriorating marriage, a prosecutor said Thursday. Adam Torres, 33, a former Fairfax County police officer, is scheduled to go on trial for murder April 18 in the August 2013 shooting death of John Geer, 46, of Springfield. Officers had been called to Geer’s home because of a domestic dispute. Torres shot Geer after a 45-minute standoff. Witnesses, including other officers, said Geer was unarmed with his hands up when he was shot. Torres told investigators he thought Geer might have had a

suppress numerous statements Torres made to other officers before and after the shooting about his anger over his marriage and his concerns that his wife was cheating on him. On three different days in the year leading up to the shooting, either Torres or his supervisors decided he was emotionally unfit to work because of his distress over his marital woes, prosecutor Robert McClain said. On the day of the shooting, Torres had been arguing with his wife on the phone for 15 minutes immediately before reporting to the standoff at the Geer home. Within a minute or two of firing the shot, he told another officer out of the blue, “I had a fight with my wife.” MATTHEW BARAKAT (AP)

nation+world Leaders call for steps to confront nuclear threat of North Korea NATIONAL SECURITY President Barack Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged Thursday to cooperate to confront the North Korean nuclear threat while working to narrow persistent differences over cybersecurity, human rights and maritime conflicts. Obama, opening a global nuclear security summit near the White House, also joined leaders of Japan and South Korea in calling for further joint steps to deter North Korea. The display of diplomatic unity came as world leaders sought to ramp up

pressure on the insular country’s government following worrisome nuclear provocations. “President Xi and I are both committed to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” Obama said as he and Xi sat down for a meeting on the sidelines of the summit. “We’re going to discuss how we can discourage actions like nuclear missile tests that escalate tensions and violate international obligations.” The U.S. has long urged China, the North’s traditional ally, to take a more forceful role in pressing North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program. The Obama administration was encouraged by China’s role in passing new stringent U.N. sanctions punishing the North, and

But it’s pretty unpredictable.” Peter Hart, a veteran Democratic pollster who has studied public impressions of Trump, said voters’ views of him are “exceptionally rancid.” “In terms of any domestic personality that we have measured, we’ve never seen an individual with a higher negative,” Hart said. Trump has drawn huge crowds and built a passionate base of supporters who have helped him build a big delegate lead in primaries and caucuses. But his success

among a segment of GOP voters stands in contrast to his weaknesses in a general election. Trump’s unpopularity in the Post-ABC poll was driven in part by sharply negative ratings from Democrats and lukewarm Republicans. The greatest risk for his general election viability stems from the unusually poor ratings he gets from swing voting independents and white college graduates. POLITICS If Donald Trump secures the GOP presidential nomination, he would start the general election campaign as the least popular candidate to represent either party in at least three decades. Three-quarters of women view him unfavorably. So do nearly two-thirds of independents, 80 percent of young adults, 85 percent of Hispanics and nearly half of Republicans and Republicanleaning independents. Those findings, tallied from Washington Post-ABC News polling, fuel Trump’s overall 67 percent unfavorable rating — making him more disliked than any major-party nominee in the 32 years the survey has been tracking candidates. Hillary Clinton’s double-barreled fight for the presidency has arrived in her home state, where she is planning a weeks-long blitz to deal with the challenge of simultaneously competing against two fellow New Yorkers: Donald Trump and Sen. Clinton also wants to look ahead to the general election while not appearing, particularly to Sanders fans, as if she believes she has clinched the nomination. U.N. abuse scandal widens Peacekeepers in Africa are accused of another 108 sexual assaults UNITED NATIONS The U.N. on Thursday announced 108 new alleged victims of sexual abuse, the vast majority of them minors, by peacekeepers in Central African Republic, and it called “shocking to the core” a report that three girls said a French military commander forced them to have sex with a dog. The revelations dramatically widened the scope of a sexual

France’s U.N. ambassador, Francois Delattre, called the allegations “sickening and odious” and promised “exemplary disciplinary action” if they are proven true. The latest allegations, dating from 2013 through last year, were first announced by a U.S.based advocacy group, AIDSFree World, late Wednesday. U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric on Thursday told reporters that the U.N. can’t confirm the allegations involving a dog at this point but that investigations continue.

Like reality, only better While virtual reality is in the limelight, tech startups set their sights on the next frontier

TECHNOLOGY Virtual reality is a trip, but an even wilder ride could be around the corner, as mind-bending startups and technology trendsetters try to emblazon the world with interactive holograms that enlighten, entertain and empower us. The concept, known as augmented reality, looks like something out of a science-fiction movie. Think Tony Stark, the comic-book character who scans information-filled holograms beamed in front of his “Iron Man” mask. It hasn’t yet advanced as far as virtual reality, which is getting attention with this week’s release of the much-hyped Oculus Rift headset from Facebook. But augmented reality has the potential to touch far more people because it’s designed as a seamless supplement to everyday living instead of an escape into the artificial dimensions conjured by VR, which so far revolves around video games and 360-degree video clips. While startups like Meta, Magic Leap and Atheer have been making the most visible progress in augmented reality so far, technology heavyweights are also eyeing it. Microsoft has just started shipping a $3,000 version of its augmented reality headset, HoloLens, to a limited audience of computer programmers, while Alphabet Inc.’s Google has been a key investor in the $1.3 billion that Magic Leap has raised during the past two years. Apple Inc. signaled its interest last year when it bought a startup called Metaio, spurring speculation that the iPhone maker is exploring

ways to infuse the project into its future products. Magic Leap, a startup based in Dania Beach, Fla., has created a lot of buzz given its ties to Google, whose CEO, Sundar Pichai, sits on its board. In addition, Chinese e-commerce powerhouse Alibaba Group was among the investors in a $793.5 million round of fundraising completed in February. But Magic Leap has also raised intrigue with flashy videos providing brief glimpses at what it’s working on. One clip shows a whale leaping out of a gymnasium floor and then splashing down before disappearing. Meta, a Silicon Valley startup, is scheduled to ship its secondgeneration headset this summer. It’s being sold as part of a $949 kit tailored for programmers to design more three-dimensional, interactive applications for the new headset. If Meta CEO Meron Gribetz realizes his vision, his company

Virtual keyboards will appear for data entry. Meta plans to use its own workers as lab rats. By next March, Gribetz plans to remove all computer screens from the company’s offices in Redwood City, Calif. Instead, employees will use virtual screens that are seen and touched through Meta 2 headsets. “Virtual reality is cool, but it’s just a stepping stone to augmented reality,” says Gribetz, 30. “We are going to build something that is 100 times easier to use than the Macintosh and 100 times more powerful.” MICHAEL LIEDTKE (AP)

One of the strictest tenets of the U.S. transplant system is that paying for organs is forbidden. But facing a chronic shortage of available kidneys, some are questioning that principle. The latest is researcher Thomas G. Peters of the University of Florida College of Medicine at Jacksonville, with a paper published in the journal JAMA Surgery. In the study, researchers surveyed 1,011 Americans about their willingness to become living kidney donors. Around 68 percent said they were open to donating to anyone, 23 percent said they would be open to donating to friends and family, and just 9 percent said they would not do it. When asked to consider the same thing if they were given $50,000 in compensation, 63 percent of those already willing to donate to anyone said the payment would make them more likely to do it. Of those willing to donate to a restricted group, 60 percent said they would be more likely. And in the group that was unwilling to donate, 26 percent said they would reconsider because of the money. Peters and his co-authors urged lawmakers to seriously consider the option of compensating those who donate and to start by amending the law banning compensation so that pilot studies could be started. THREE POINTERS

Optimism for hot start The Nationals, who open the 2016 season Monday, should get off to a strong start after missing the playoffs last season. Here’s why.

Bryce Harper and the Nationals open the 2016 season in Atlanta on Monday.

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Still good enough: For Nats, playoffs are a realistic goal What would be considered a successful season for the Nationals? Ninety wins and an NL East crown or wildcard berth? Eighty-two victories for a winning season? After a disappointing year and offseason roster turnover that still leaves the bullpen suspect, do fans expect the Nationals to be serious World Series contenders after coming up short of expectations the past four years? Why not? This isn’t a rebuilding team. There are still plenty of pillars for success, including returning NL MVP Bryce Harper, a solid starting rotation and a new manager with a proven résumé of

playoff success. This isn’t the season for them to expect less. It’s the time to hit the gas once more. Maybe being an underdog to division rivals the New York Mets will lessen the pressure on Washington and let players swing more freely. But make no mistake — a bad season would lead to a whole lot more changes, so there’s still pressure to perform this year. Otherwise, they’ll break up the old gang even more and bring in younger talent. Once again, pitching is everything for the Nationals, who open the season Monday at Atlanta. The loss of Jordan Zimmermann to free agency will hurt, but the Max Scherzer-Gio Gonzalez-Stephen

Strasburg trio remains topshelf, especially if Strasburg can deliver in a contract year. The question is what will the Nationals get out of Joe Ross and Tanner Roark. If the two combine for 20 victories, Washington should make the playoffs. And then there’s the bullpen. Supposedly, Jonathan Papelbon’s choke jobs last season on the mound and in the dugout have been forgiven and forgotten. But that might change if he doesn’t regularly close out wins. If Papelbon struggles and the bullpen problems that have plagued the Nationals in recent years persist, this could be a long season. Hitting may come down to how well Ryan Zimmerman, Jayson Werth and Danny Espinosa perform. The top of the order — Ben Revere, Anthony Rendon and Harper — should

be fine. Revere, who stole 31 bases last season, should excel at the top of a lineup that is likely to run more under new manager Dusty Baker. But Zimmerman and Werth didn’t produce last year and Espinosa is at best a .250 hitter. It wouldn’t hurt if Wilson Ramos upped his 15 homers and .229 average from last year, too. Overall, the pieces for success are still in place. It’s now up to Baker to do what predecessor Matt Williams couldn’t — get the team to play hard all season. Baseball is such a grind over 162 games that it’s easy not to get too hyped or worried about a short stretch. But those short stretches of uninspiring play turned into one long season in 2015. Too many players never broke out of slumps and Washington blew another promising season. Baker may be the team MVP this season if he’s able to revive the locker room. It can still be a successful season if the players care enough.

3 Friendly schedule The Nationals don’t play a team that made the playoffs in 2015 until April 29. Their first 22 games are against the Braves, Marlins, Phillies and Twins.

2 A healthy start Three starters — Jayson Werth, Anthony Rendon and Denard Span — opened the 2015 season on the disabled list and the Nationals started 2-6. This year, the entire starting lineup is healthy.

1 A red-hot spring Washington went an MLBbest 18-4 this spring and had a plus-81 run differential — 24 more than the next best team. Opening day starter Max Scherzer allowed two earned runs in 13 innings.

U.S. women seek equal pay United remains upbeat despite abysmal start FRANCK FIFE/AFP (GETTY IMAGES)

SOCCER Five stars from the World Cupwinning U.S. women’s national team have accused the U.S. Soccer Federation of wage discrimination in an action filed with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Alex Morgan, Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe, Becky Sauerbrunn and Hope Solo maintain in the EEOC filing that they are paid nearly four times less than their male counterparts on the U.S. men’s national team, based on U.S. Soccer’s 2015 financial report. The filing was announced Thursday in a statement from the law firm representing the players. “The numbers speak for themselves,” Solo said in the statement. “We are the best in the world, have three World Cup Championships, four Olympic Championships, and the USMNT get paid more just to show up than we get paid to win major championships.” The union representing the players is currently involved in a legal dispute with U.S. Soccer over the terms of their collective bargaining agreement. The federation filed a lawsuit this year seeking to clarify that its contract with the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team Players Association runs through the Rio Olympics until Dec. 31. The union maintains the memorandum of understanding

The top players on the women’s team are paid about $72,000 a year by U.S. Soccer, along with bonuses, to play in a minimum of 20 exhibitions per year — a salary far less than the men, the complaint says. And unlike the men, they are awarded bonuses only if they win those matches, it says. The players have a potential to earn $99,000 if they win all 20 exhibitions, while their male counterparts would earn $263,320 for the same feat, the document claims. Gender pay gap According to numbers obtained by Sports Illustrated from the separate collective bargaining agreements of the U.S. men and women’s teams, here are some startling figures showing the wage gap. The women’s team argues that its CBA has expired. (EXPRESS) The U.S. women earn a $75,000 bonus per player for winning the World Cup, while the men earn an average of about $400,000. Women can earn $30,000 each for making the U.S. World Cup team, while the men are paid $68,750. For all friendlies, U.S. women earn $1,350 per player for a win. Depending on the opponent, each men’s player earns $9,375 to $17,625 for an exhibition victory.

for winning the tournament. The U.S. men’s team conversely earned $9 million the year before at the World Cup in Brazil after going 1-2-1 and losing in the round of 16. The pay disparities exist even though the U.S. women have been successful not only on the field, but also at the ticket booth and in terms of television ratings. Last year’s World Cup final was the second-most-watched soccer match in U.S. television history, with 25.4 million viewers. That’s also the largest television audience for a game involving a U.S. national team; the biggest audience for a U.S. men’s game was 18.2 million for a USA-Portugal World Cup match in 2014. Redskins sign Vernon Davis

Two weeks after hosting veteran tight end Vernon Davis for a free agent visit, the Redskins signed him to a contract, a source confirmed Thursday. Davis, 32, returns to his home town, a short distance from where he played college ball at Maryland. Over his 10-year career, he has 461 catches for 5,841 yards and 55 touchdowns. Traded to Denver midway through the 2015 season, Davis posted just 395 receiving yards last year and failed to get in the end zone. D.C. UNITED After four games of the MLS season, D.C. United has reason for alarm, but the club isn’t ready to panic quite yet. With two draws and two losses in its opening four matches, United sits in ninth place in the Eastern Conference. After last weekend’s 3-0 loss to FC Dallas, United has a leagueworst minus-6 goal differential. As the club travels west to face San Jose on Saturday (10:30 p.m., NewsChannel 8), it has scored just two goals this season — one in the first five minutes of the first game, and one thanks to an awful Colorado goalkeeping mistake. Through the rough early stretch, coach Ben Olsen hasn’t lost faith in his team. “I’m not that alarmed,” Olsen said after the FC Dallas loss. “I believe that we have pieces here that can win games in this league and get us to the playoffs.” With the forgiving playoff structure in MLS (12 of the league’s 20 teams will qualify this season), United has some margin for error. After this weekend, the club will play five of its next six games at home. “It’s definitely frustrating,” United defender Sean Franklin said of the team’s setbacks. “We’re four games into the season, so we’re not hitting the panic button yet. But we have to be getting points.” SETH VERTELNEY (FOR EXPRESS)

Oklahoma vs. Villanova (6:09 p.m. Saturday, TBS): These teams met earlier in the season and the Sooners turned it into a laugher behind a barrage of 3-pointers, making 14 behind the arc in the 78-55 win. Expect this one to be much closer.

Buddy Hield, Okla.: If you don’t know who Buddy Buckets is, you haven’t been following college hoops — or sports, for that matter.

Roy Williams, UNC: The Hall of Famer is vying for his third national title.

Final Four appearances by Williams, with Kansas and North Carolina.

Syracuse vs. North Carolina (8:49 p.m. Saturday, TBS): Round 3 for the ACC rivals. The Tar Heels won both regularseason games by wrecking the Orange’s zone with their strong post play. Fail to figure out how to stop North Carolina inside and the Tar Heels could sweep into the title game.

Brice Johnson, UNC: The All-American is a matchup nightmare on offense and has become a shot-blocking menace late in the season.

Jim Boeheim, Syracuse: He was suspended nine games during the season for NCAA violations, and he may have done the best coaching job of his Hall of Fame career after he came back.

Josh Hart, Villanova: On a team with no true stars, he stands out because of how hard he plays — on every play.

Lon Kruger, Okla.: The only coach to take five schools to the NCAA Tournament is eyeing his first title.

Michael Gbinije, Syracuse: Need a basket, rebound, assist or steal? He’s the man for the Orange.

Jay Wright, Villanova: He proved critics wrong by getting the Wildcats to the Final Four after all those early exits as high seeds.

What’s it like to live in a complex overrun by college students?

JASON HORNICK (FOR EXPRESS)

D.C. LIVING When Carly Puzniak, 25, moved to The Berkshire, she didn’t know much about the massive apartment complex down the street from American University. She definitely didn’t realize that, for many students, “The Berks” is an extension of college. “It’s very college-oriented, which is great — if you go to AU,” says Puzniak, who recently moved from the complex to an apartment in Mount Pleasant. “It kind of feels like the building people go to when they leave the dorms.” Apartment buildings near college campuses like The Berkshire (4201 Massachusetts Ave. NW; gables.com, 866-960-6146) are an obvious draw for students ready to live off-campus, but striking the right balance with non-student residents can be a challenge. Residents say the arrangement has its pros and cons, while universities and apartments have their own methods for CONTINUED ON PAGE R2

The downsides

“Sometimes I do feel when I walk down the hall, it smells like weed.” JASON HORNICK (FOR EXPRESS)

When sharing thin walls with college kids, the most obvious point of contention — and the subject of many a negative Yelp review — is the noise level. Erica Rodriguez, 21, a junior at American University who lives at The Berkshire, says the sometimes dorm-like atmosphere can make for awkward encounters with older residents and families. “It can get rather uncomfortable,” she says. “Intimate stuff can be loud. Next-door families might pound on the door or the wall.” Other renters say noise isn’t as big of an issue. “Every once in a while on Friday and Saturday night it’s loud,” says Kayla Jasper, 24, a medical school student living at Residences on the Avenue (2221 I St NW; residencesontheavenue. com, 888-670-1175) in the midst of the George Washington University campus. “But I don’t have a problem with it.” John Cohan, director of marketing for Southern Management Corporation (southernmanagement.com, 888-612-7868), says he doesn’t hear a profusion of noise complaints from their communities. The company manages several apartment complexes

in the area, some of which offer discounts or special perks to college or graduate student renters. “I think students are pretty serious these days,” he says. “From what I hear, they’re good citizens. They’re good residents.” Cory Peterson, director of Georgetown University’s Office of Neighborhood Life (1300 36th Street NW; studentliving. georgetown.edu/off-campus, 202-687-5138), reminds students to be especially mindful of noise during off hours and weekdays.

“Community members realize on the weekends there’s going to be noise,” he says. “They get that.” The office has resources on its website to ensure that students make good neighbors, and that they know their tenant rights. If student residents — or their neighbors — do have concerns or complaints, they can email the Office of Neighborhood Life or call the university’s 24/7 help line, Peterson says. Ronak Mehta, 31, a physician who has lived at Residences

on the Avenue since July 2015, says her apartment building has quiet hours, which students seem to keep to. But there are other, unexpected drawbacks. “Sometimes I do feel when I walk down the hall, it smells like weed,” she says.

The perks

There are also some perks to having college kids in your building or neighborhood, Peterson and Cohan note. For example, babysitters, tutors or dog walkers can

For students looking for a middle ground after leaving on-campus housing, off-campus apartments that are meant specifically for student renters, like the Towers at University Town Center (6515 Belcrest Rd., Hyattsville, Md.; thetowersatutc.com, 301-7792727) and The Varsity (8150 Baltimore Ave., College Park, Md.; americancampus.com/thevarsity, 301-446-3790), might be a good option. Michelle Dovil, 28, a grad student at Howard University who has been living at the Towers for the past five years, says the benefits include lower prices, lots of amenities and shuttles to Howard and the University of Maryland. “It’s the shuttle that keeps everybody here,” she says. be right next door. “Students are looking for other ways to help them pay their bills,” Cohan says. According to Mehta, another perk is that, because students keep different hours than many other residents who work from 9 to 5, amenities like the gym never seem to be overrun. Early experiences off campus can prepare students for the realities of rental life. “We see them as we see any resident,” Cohan says. “They need housing too.” ERIN BYLANDER (FOR EXPRESS)

Midnight Special

A truly sweet nothing ‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ recaptures the gentle magic of ‘Dazed and Confused’ FILM REVIEW As “Everybody Wants Some!!” opens, a freshman baseball player named Jake (Blake Jenner) is cruising to Southeast Texas University while “My Sharona” plays in the background. The year is 1980, a fact confirmed by the tube socks, short shorts, Selleck ’staches and other period-specific artifacts that festoon the movie like so much Christmas tinsel. Jake fetches up at an off-campus house that’s been designated for the baseball team, a dusty, bare-bones firetrap where he will live in fraternitylike, beered-up bliss with his new brothers-in-arms. “Everybody Wants Some!!” takes place over three days, during which

Jake will bond with his new friends, chase girls and explore the sundry subcultures of his new world, in an ecstatic loop of party-recover-repeat. “Everybody Wants Some!!” shares some obvious genetic material with college sex-and-drugs comedies, starting with “Animal House” and ending somewhere around “Neighbors.” But director Richard Linklater is too sensitive, curious and forgiving a filmmaker to content himself with simply adding another blearyeyed bacchanal to the canon. Instead, he finds moments of disarming humanity, especially when it comes to male insecurity, ritualized affiliation and aggression and the fragile anxieties and hopes that curl, tendril-like,

‘Everybody Wants Some!!’ (R, 116 minutes) DIRECTOR: Richard Linklater STARS: Blake Jenner, Tyler Hoechlin, Ryan Guzman, Juston Street IN A NUTSHELL: Friends navigate their way through unsupervised adulthood in the ”spiritual sequel” to Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused.”

around a newfound identity. In addition to Jenner, Linklater has assembled a wonderful crew of young, little-known actors to portray Jake’s new friends, including Glen Powell as a pipe-smoking Kerouac fan; Tyler Hoechlin as the team’s alpha male; and Wyatt Russell

as a pothead pitcher from California who recalls Matthew McConaughey’s superannuated stoner in “Dazed and Confused.” “Dazed” fans might need to adjust their expectations: “Everybody Wants Some!!” doesn’t possess the same feeling of a movie getting a time and place exactly right. This version of the past feels more dressed-out and done-up, but that doesn’t detract from its pleasures. As small and specific as it is, “Everybody Wants Some!!” feels improbably expansive, even universal. As Jake’s endless Friday night turns into the inevitable Monday morning, it turns out that his lost weekend was all about being found. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Charges of ‘reverse sexism’ in 3… 2…

Paul Feig, the director behind “Bridesmaids,” “Spy” and the upcoming “Ghostbusters” reboot, said on a panel discussion Wednesday night that he would add a clause to his future contracts requiring that the casting of minor roles be gender-balanced, the AP reports. Women represented 30 percent of speaking roles in the films released in 2014 and 4 percent of directors in the past 12 years. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

PARAMOUNT PICTURES

PG-13, 111 minutes

Temple Baker, Blake Jenner and James Quinton Johnson, from left, take a ride in “Everybody Wants Some!!”

Writer-director Jeff Nichols presents a domestic drama threaded with intimations of the cosmic. A low-key game of cat-and-mouse ensues as two men (Michael Shannon and Joel Edgerton) ferry an 8-year-old boy through moonlit Texas back roads in order to escape from a semireligious cult. Even at its most imaginatively outthere, “Midnight Special” is most profoundly about the enduring parental narrative of letting go. A.H.

Take Me to the River Unrated, 84 minutes

A family reunion turns nightmarish in the unsettling feature debut of writer-director Matt Sobel. The premise is intriguing — a semi-closeted gay teen is accused of sexual misconduct with a young, female cousin — but the menace never becomes palpable. The stakes are high, but the suspense never rises to the occasion. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Ramblin’ man: Linklater’s style isn’t for everybody In early 2013 my mom called me and she was mad. OK, not really mad, but irritated. She had recently seen “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” mainly because it was my top film of 2012. “That was TERRIBLE,” she said in the same voice she used to reprimand me for telling my youngest sister she was adopted from the planet Voltron and her real parents were coming to get her any day now. “It didn’t make any sense! It was so boring!” First, she was wrong about it being terrible. Second, I would never, EVER have recommended “Beasts of the Southern Wild” to her. Not because Mom doesn’t like good movies, or artsy movies, or indie movies, but because the non-narrative, fantasy style that “Beasts” uses just isn’t for her. Now, three years later,

I’m torn over whether or not to recommend “Everybody Wants Some!!” to her. In the yes column are the facts that it’s about baseball (she adores the game and her favorite movie is “Bull Durham”) and that it’s hilarious; in the no column is the simple fact that it’s a Richard Linklater film, and a very Richard Linklater-y one at that. Meaning that, while there’s technically a plot, it’s in the sense that my day so far has had a plot: I woke up. I hit snooze twice. I brushed my teeth. I took my son to school.

Linklater’s style is best described as “meandering,” and that’s not everyone’s thing. But nobody does nothing better than him.

I made breakfast (two eggs, three slices of prosciutto). I checked Facebook. I wrote some stuff. I checked Reddit. I made some tea. Now I’m writing this. Soon I’m going to make some lunch. Probably leftovers. You can see how normal life might not make for cinematic greatness. The thing is, nobody does nothing better than Linklater. While his more straightforward films are also usually solid (I’m a particular fan of “Bernie”), his signature style is best described as “meandering,” and that’s not everyone’s thing. When people discuss Linklater’s films, the tipping point between “good” and “bad” tends not to involve the quality of the films, but how people feel about being told a story that has no traditional story elements. I’ll disagree with anyone who says “Boyhood” is a bad film, but I can also understand and appreciate why someone wouldn’t like it. I’m sure some very fine licoriceflavored dishes exist in this world; I’m still not going to like them because licorice is gross. I’ll probably end up recommending “Everybody Wants Some!!” to Mom, but caution her about its Linklaterishness. And if she calls to tell me it’s terrible, that’s OK. A road trip to nowhere is fun for some, but it’s not everyone’s favorite ride.

FILM REVIEW The musical progeny of the late country star Hank Williams (1923-1953) are of two minds as to whether actor Tom Hiddleston — best known for playing Loki in Marvel’s “Thor” movies — delivers a performance worthy of their grandfather in the biopic “I Saw the Light.” Granddaughter Holly Williams told Rolling Stone that Hiddleston put his “whole heart and soul into it,” while grandson Shelton Hank Williams complained on Facebook, after hearing Hiddleston perform in character at a 2014 music festival, that the actor had no “moan or soul” in his voice. Oh, there’s a soullessness to the movie, all right, but Hiddleston is not its source. The actor, who drops his clipped English diction here for a betterthan-passable Alabama drawl, makes for a believable Williams, hunching forward at the microphone as Williams did — a result of chronic back pain from spina bifida — and imitating, if not replicating, the singer’s signature nasally vocal hiccups. Offstage, Hiddleston is even better at evoking Williams’ sly charm, a blend of lingering hurt and earnestness. It’s the movie that doesn’t tell the truth. I don’t mean that literally. While “I Saw the Light” gets the

superficial details of the story right, it never allows you to get inside the heart of its subject. Mostly, that’s the result of a screenplay that feels overly episodic, tracking Williams’ rapid rise from obscurity to fame like any number of conventional biographies and quickly settling into a groove of sluggishly dutiful

chronology. From the 1944 wedding of Williams and his first wife, Audrey (Elizabeth Olsen) — in an Alabama gas station, by a justice of the peace — we then hop, with frequent on-screen dates and datelines, to Louisiana, Texas, Tennessee, Washington, New York and California, as “I Saw the Light” charts the dissolution of Williams’ marriage and his worsening alcoholism with a sense of inevitability, if not tragedy. By the time the story gets to the singer’s death, in the back seat of a car on the way to a show, it feels like it could have ended — or should have ended — a long time ago. Bizarrely, director Marc Abraham elects to tell, when he could show, some of the most interesting — or at least most cinematic — moments in Williams’ life: his 1951 appearance on “The Perry Como Show” and a hunting accident that same year, after which he became increasingly dependent on drugs. Both of those scenes occur, inexplicably, off camera. At other times, the script references things that haven’t even happened yet. As the film wears on, our protagonist becomes an increasingly unreliable performer, missing shows while intoxicated and ultimately getting fired from the Grand Ole Opry. But the precise cause of all this bad behavior is left unexplored. “I Saw the Light” isn’t just incohesive, but ultimately — and far more frustratingly — incoherent. The director and star of ‘I Saw the Light’ aren’t cool with that B-word FILM Marc Abraham, the writerdirector of the Hank Williams biopic “I Saw the Light,” doesn’t really care that Hank Williams was a real guy. Mostly because he doesn’t really consider “I Saw the Light” a Hank Williams biopic. “I strove from the very, very beginning to tell the story in a way I was interested in,” he says, “regardless of what other people want to see when they see a film that’s biographical.” The biopic designation bugs Abraham and Tom Hiddleston, the British actor who plays the legendary country singersongwriter behind standards like

“Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “Hey, Good Lookin’.” The director and his star approached “I Saw the Light” much like they would a movie of any genre. “I never thought about the film as a biopic, not after a while,” Hiddleston says. “I just thought about my obligations to Hank to get things right — to change the way I looked, to change the way I play the guitar, to change the way I sounded and sang — and the rest of it was about trying to get underneath, to get inside the soul of a man and express universal feelings.” Still, those universal feelings are being expressed through a person who was very real (Williams died in 1953 at the age of 29). Hiddleston, who’s been busy the past few years playing

MIDDLE EAST UPDATE 2016 - WHAT'S NEXT? In this talk we will explore the current state of the Middle East and the civil war in Syria, and how it got there. We will look at the different players and philosophies involved.

“Of course, for all intensive purposes, the Resolution doesn’t come with any consequences for the dolts who can’t stop saying ‘physical’ when they mean ‘fiscal.’ ” ASHLEY FEINBERG, at gawker.com, jokes around — or is she? — in reporting on

Missouri House Resolution 1220. Offered earlier this month by newly elected Rep. Tracy McCreery, HR 1220 urges the body’s lawmakers to use the correct word in describing fiscal matters. “I feel like the word ‘fiscal’ is just very critical to doing our job properly,” McCreery told The Washington Post.

We will conclude with a scriptural look at what we should expect to happen next as events lead on toward the return of the Lord Jesus Christ and the establishment of God's Kingdom. Thursday, April 7th at 7:30PM Sully Government Center 4900 Stonecroft Blvd., Chantilly, VA

a tweet the State Department account sent on Wednesday warning Americans traveling abroad. “Not a ‘10’ in the US?” the tweet read. “Then not a 10 overseas. “Why won’t Nintendo let me have a mohawk? What are they, my parents?”

“I have a great deal of respect for what Christie did with those M&M’s.”

@OHMANDAZ is frustrated with this missing option in customizing her Mii character in Nintendo’s Miitomo, its first smartphone app/social platform, which it made available in the U.S. on Thursday. It’s the first mobile offering for the company, which has finally embraced the rise of the platform. Its stock jumped 8 percent in March when the app launched in Japan.

@BOBBYJDANIELS approves of what

he called the New Jersey governor’s “power move.” A photo that made the social media rounds on Wednesday showed Chris Christie pouring a bag of M&Ms into a box of M&Ms. Christie explained himself Thursday on sports radio show “Boomer and Carton”: “It’s easier to hold the box than to hold the bag.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’re willing to do more for someone than he or she is for you, but you needn’t worry about parity. It’ll work out eventually. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) It’s not up to you to work everything out for those around you, but any extra effort you put in will surely be appreciated. DIFFICULT

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

ATHLETIC WEAR

For when an old college T-shirt just won’t cut it

And yes, she will write a song about this R&B star Brandy sued Chameleon Entertainment Group in Los Angeles on Tuesday, claiming the label won’t allow her to record new music in an attempt to get her to sign a new deal. Brandy signed a deal in 2011 that gave Chameleon the option to release five more Brandy records. Her suit says the label refused to allow her to record a new album after her 2012 LP. The lawsuit says Brandy terminated her contract with Chameleon but wants a judge’s ruling that it is void. (AP)

Beyonce on Thursday debuted Ivy Park, her new line of athletic wear. According to a promotional video, the name is inspired by the park where the pop star would train each morning as a teen. The brand’s website says pieces will be available April 14 online and at a list of retailers including Nordstrom and Topshop. The line has already inspired jealousy from the pricey athletic wear line Lululemon, which tweeted Thursday: “They do say imitation is the best form of flattery. Maybe Beyonce is so Crazy In Love with our brand, she made her own.” Lululemon has since apologized and deleted the tweet. (EXPRESS)

BEHIND THE MUSIC

How long until this is a plot of an ‘Empire’ episode?

‘We just couldn’t find the right sound, ya know?’

A source for gossip site Fameolous, which published the video in which Nick Young confessed to cheating on rapper Iggy Azalea, says it was Azalea’s rival Nicki Minaj who leaked the secret recording. The source told the “HD Show” that someone in Minaj’s “camp” sent in the video as retaliation after Azalea talked about her on “Watch What Happens Live.” (EXPRESS)

Suri Cruise, 9, reportedly fired her music teacher. A source told the New York Post that Cruise and mother Katie Holmes met the cast of Broadway’s “School of Rock” this week, where star Alex Brightman asked if she played a musical instrument. Cruise is said to have replied that she “used to play guitar.” Her instructor, she said, was “a very nice person,” but that it just didn’t work out and they parted ways. (EXPRESS)
