Landmark settlement restores faith in the U.S. justice system

The Russian Foreign Ministry has a surprising sense of humor. On its Facebook page on April Fools’ Day, the ministry posted an audio file of a purported new automated message to greet callers to its embassies: “To arrange a call from a Russian diplomat to your political opponent, press 1,” the message said in Russian and English. Press 2 “to use the services of Russian hackers,” and 3 “to request election interference.” (AP)

A cheeky thief in Portland, Ore., likely was pleased with herself after stealing a box from a doorstep and leaving a note that said, “Hey! Thank you for the package!” But the homeowner may have the last laugh, UPI reported. Her security system videotapes anyone at the door. Police now have an image of the suspect, who was seen writing a note before the video stopped and she apparently made off with a $17 bottle of hair oil. (EXPRESS)

He couldn’t believe it was butter, The Boston Globe wrote last week. So the Massachusetts man sued 20 Dunkin’ Donuts franchises, claiming he asked for butter and got a substitute. He also got a settlement, whose terms were not revealed. “It seems like a really minor thing, and we thought twice or three times about whether to bring a lawsuit,” attorney Thomas Shapiro said. But, he added, “A lot of people prefer butter.” (EXPRESS)

‘You’ve got to keep painting’ THE DISTRICT At 2 a.m. one recent Saturday, a security monitor woke Margarita Contreras, who feared burglars were breaking into the art studio in her Northeast D.C. backyard. She roused her husband, painter and muralist Rik Freeman. As they rushed to the back of their home, the couple saw a glow through the studio windows. “I just saw the billowing cloud of reddish brown smoke. We just heard the snap, crackle, pop of fire,” Freeman said. “I didn’t know if I was going to have a heart attack or worse. I was messed up.” Freeman, whose murals adorn local spaces including the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the Arlington courthouse and the Dorothy Height Library, looked on helplessly as firefighters smashed windows and aimed hoses at the studio. He nearly ran inside to rescue his oil paintings and those of his close friend and fellow artist, Rafiki Morris, who lost decades of work in a matter of minutes as the space they shared burned.

Two artists begin to move forward after a fire guts their studio

Rafiki Morris collects damaged paintings last week from his burned studio in Deanwood, which he shares with muralist Rik Freeman.

The March 25 blaze started when someone set fire to a car in the alley behind Freeman and Contreras’ Olive Street home, an urban oasis the couple has created in the Deanwood neighborhood. They transformed their home from a squatters’ den soiled with human waste and refurbished a bare brick carriage house into the studio. Their backyard has a pond filled with koi and gardens that attract bees and birds. Freeman wonders if those responsible have any idea of the

destruction they caused. “They basically put a bomb next to our building,” he said. Inside the brick studio there’s an acrid smell and charred debris. Things are still damp from water used to extinguish the flames. Freeman’s canvas work managed to escape the flames but at least eight pieces, including some of his series about the blues titled “The Chittlin Circuit Review” were damaged and reek of smoke. “The soot is almost ground in. I don’t know how in the hell that happened,” he said. On the practical side, the men are awaiting insurance adjustments. As artists, they are also seeking ways to make something anew from this destruction. Morris is considering a GoFundMe page to help him retool and restore these pieces and work from his 12 years living in Trinidad, which he lost because of an insect infestation at a storage facility. He’s considering a new exhibition with a working title of “Fire In My Belly.” Both artists see only one way forward. “You’ve got to keep going,” Morris said. “You’ve got to keep painting.” CLARENCE WILLIAMS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Md. police investigating DNA lab over neglect PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY Prince George’s County police suspended an employee and are conducting a review of the department’s DNA lab after learning that the employee accredited work at a Texas facility that later had to be shut down. The ongoing county review uncovered neglected DNA profiles that should have been entered into a national database, lags in notifying investigators of DNA profile matches and the use of outdated methods to calculate the individuality of profiles. As of late last week, the lapses

identified did not appear to have affected any prosecutions or convictions, county Police Chief Hank Stawinski said. Stawinski ordered the review of county lab operations in November and said the department suspended an employee within a day of launching the probe. The county employee also serves as a national accreditor in lab audits. Stawinski said he has alerted six other law enforcement agencies audited by the employee to scrutinize their lab operations. “We realized we had an issue and we took action” in the county,

Stawinski said. “At this point, we have no instance where these administrative failings have led to a place where we could have prevented violent crime from occurring, and we don’t have anyone innocent locked up in jail.” Police would not name the suspended lab employee, citing Maryland state personnel law. Individuals familiar with the inquiry identified her as Lynnett Redhead, who has been in charge of the DNA lab since 2007. Her attorney confirmed she is on paid administrative leave.

Audience members repeatedly booed and yelled at Maryland Rep. Andy Harris during a loud Friday night town hall on the Eastern Shore. They waved signs with their ZIP codes on them, a gesture participants said was meant to remind the congressman he represents them. A long line of people gathered more than an hour before the event in Wye Mills. The booing began about five minutes into the Republican’s slideshow on the federal deficit. Audience members yelled at Harris to answer questions. “You work for us,” one person yelled. “We want answers.” Harris, the only Republican member of Maryland’s congressional delegation, ended his remarks by saying the nation was a great country because people could agree to disagree without fear. In a letter to Trump last week, Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser asked Trump to give the city control of the RFK Stadium site, Franklin Park in downtown D.C. and the city’s three public golf courses. Bowser’s letter says efforts to redevelop those sites have been slowed by the park service to varying degrees. REVERSE TYPE II DIABETES You’re Invited to a

Here is what Drs. Chaney’s patients are saying... “When I started my A1C was 12.5 - it was terrifying. The program to me was life changing. When I thought I was eating right they let me know that what I was eating was good for some people but it wasn’t good for me. I thank God for Dr. Steph and Dr. Tom Chaney because they turned my life around.”

“I am reporting to you three years after joining the program. I am 50 pounds lighter, I am happier, healthier and my A1C is no longer 13 but 5.4.” -Glennis G.

-Milton A.

“I can not tell you how great I feel. My energy is way up and my sleep is so much better. I am thrilled with Dr. Tom and Dr. Steph for helping me regain my personal health and reverse my diabetes.”

-Barry B.

“When I started this program my A1C was 8.9. My current A1C is 5.7. I was taking Metformin and two types of blood pressure medications. My blood sugars before the program were running in the 180’s. Now my blood sugars are running in the 110’s. After 2 months in the program my doctors stopped my Metformin that was phenomenal! I’ve also lost 25 pounds.”

“My first visit was very pleasant. My second visit is what changed my life. I have been a patient for 6 months. My A1C has gone from 6.6 to 5.7. I started out 70 pounds heavier. But coming to Living Health wasn’t about weight loss it was about type 2 diabetes. As you can see from my numbers that my type 2 diabetes has been reversed which is the intent of the program.”

“I came to this program because my A1C had drastically gone up to 9.2 and I was 215 pounds. Six months into the program my A1C dropped from 9.2 to 6.2 and my weight has dropped from 215 pounds to 195.”

“All I can say is it really works. I’ve been in the program for 5 months and I feel like a whole new woman. I’ve lost 40 pounds, I’m not on any diabetic medication anymore - that stopped pretty quick! My A1C went from 7.8 to 6.”

-Marissa M. My A1C was 8. Two months after that it was 6.4. As of a couple of days ago it is 5.9. I am ecstatic about that. I can only hope...I know, not hope, I know...that my blood sugars have come down, so the weight will come off. The blood pressure, I’ll be off of that medication. I have no doubt that I’ll be off of my diabetes medication and it’s all thanks to the Drs. Chaney and their facilities and I’m so happy.”

nation+world With more than 200 dead, crews search for survivors amid debris COLOMBIA People in a small city in southern Colombia searched desperately Sunday for loved ones after heavy rains sent floodwaters, mud and debris surging through homes, killing at least 207 and leaving many injured or missing. The streets of Mocoa were covered in thick sand, mud and tree limbs from the rivers and forest that surround the city. There was little drinking water and no power, which forced authorities to suspend the search and rescue effort during the night. P resident Ju a n M a nuel

Santos, who has declared Mocoa a disaster area, said that at least 207 were killed but that the death toll was changing “every moment.” Authorities said another 200 people, many of them children, were injured and just as many were unaccounted for. Throughout Mocoa, people dug through the ruins, salvaging what they could of their possessions and looking for the missing. Dozens of people were in the door of a hospital looking for family members who were not on the list of those confirmed injured or dead. Others frantically knocked on the doors of neighbors, hoping to find someone with information about their relatives. “People went to their houses and found nothing but the floor,”

by intense rains that caused the rivers that surround Mocoa, a city of about 40,000 nestled amid forested mountains, to overrun their banks. Muddy water and debris quickly surged through the city’s streets, toppling homes, ripping trees from their roots, lifting cars and trucks and carrying them downstream. The crisis is likely to be remembered as one of the worst natural disasters in recent Colombian history, though the Andean nation has experienced even more destructive environmental catastrophes. ‘A solar Saudi Arabia’

While Trump promotes coal, Chile and others are turning to cheap solar power Solar plants in Chile’s Atacama Desert are taking advantage of the region’s potent sun power.

Flynn initially did not disclose Russia income

fossil-fuel sources, according to the most recent data from the Environmental Protection Agency. The U.S. last year pledged with other members of the Group of 7 nations to phase out subsidies for oil, gas and coal by 2025. But meeting such goals remains politically contentious in the U.S., with an existing network of conventional power plants and jobs that depend on them. Nations like Chile can take a different path. Chile is adding solar plants because they fulfill the country’s goal of 60 percent clean energy by the year 2035. But mostly it is adding them because no other energy source can compete with the awesome sun power of the Atacama Desert. Rodrigo Mancilla, who leads a commission on solar power at Chile’s Ministry of Energy, said: “We’ve been thinking for so long that we’re poor in energy resources, but we’re really rich.”

POLITICS Before resigning under pressure as President Trump’s national security adviser, Michael Flynn submitted a personal financial disclosure form to federal ethics officials that failed to note speaking fees he received from Russia-related entities in 2015, new filings show. Flynn later noted the payments on an amended form he signed Friday that listed among his sources of income the Russian government-backed television network RT, a U.S. air cargo company affiliated with the Volga-Dnepr Group and the U.S. subsidiary of Russian cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab. The White House released both sets of the forms Saturday as part of a broad release of documents detailing the financial holdings of top administration officials. Flynn’s initial form was submitted to the Office of Government Ethics and the White House on Feb. 11 — just days before he was forced to leave his post amid controversy over his contacts with Russia’s ambassador. On the document, he noted that he received fees through a speakers bureau, but he did not detail the organizations that paid to have him as a speaker. The U.S. government has said that RT, which receives Kremlin funding, is part of an array of propaganda outlets that help popularize a pro-Russian perspective through the media.

Last year, when the Chilean government invited utility companies to bid on public contracts, solar producers dominated the auction — offering to supply electricity at about half the cost of coal-fired plants. It wasn’t because of a government subsidy for alternative energy. In Chile and a growing list of nations, the price of solar energy has fallen so much that it is increasingly beating out conventional sources of power. Industry experts and government regulators hail this moment as a turning point in the history of human electricity-making. “This is the beginning of a trend that will only accelerate,” said Chilean Energy Minister Andrés Rebolledo. “We’re talking about an infinite fuel source.” President Trump ordered U.S. regulators last week to reverse Obama-era policies aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions, and he has promised to “bring back” the U.S. coal industry. But construction of coal-fired power plants dropped 62 percent over the past year worldwide, according to a survey by the Sierra Club and other activist groups. More worldwide generating capacity is now being added from clean sources than coal and natural gas combined, according to a December report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, which closely tracks investment in renewables. Long dependent on energy imports, Chilean officials now

envision their country turning into a “solar Saudi Arabia.” Chile’s solar energy production has increased sixfold since 2014, and last year it was the topscoring clean-energy producer in the Americas, and second in the world to China, according to the Bloomberg rankings. Driving the global shift to cheap sun power is a dramatic decline in the cost of the photovoltaic (PV) panels that can be used to create giant desert solar farms or rooftop home installations. China produces more than two-thirds of the world’s PV panels, and their price has fallen more than 80 percent since 2008. If the trend does indeed symbolize a turning point, that doesn’t mean every country is on board with the global greenenergy conversion. Electricity production is the largest source of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions, and more than two-thirds is generated from

According to the Census Bureau’s County Business Patterns program, the coal industry employed 76,572 people in 2014, the latest year for which data is available. POLITICS Making his first official visit to Washington, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s meeting with President Trump could be a significant step in the international rehabilitation of the general-turned-politician who was kept out of the Obama White House. But, analysts caution, there may not be much more that Egypt’s leader will be able to take from today’s White House visit. In a brief meeting in September at the U.N., thencandidate Trump said the two had a “good chemistry.” There has been no official word on the specifics of the wish list el-Sissi is carrying, but expectations include more military aid, designating el-Sissi’s nemesis — the Muslim Brotherhood — as a terrorist group, and restoring a strategic partnership. Another issue that may arise is the Arab League’s territorial demands in exchange for peace with Israel, reaffirmed last week. El-Sissi, whose country already has peace with Israel, may be in a position to help Trump push for a broad deal — but there is potential for disagreement. Former President Barack Obama kept el-Sissi at arm’s length after the defense minister rose to power when he led the military’s 2013 ouster of Islamist Mohammed Morsi. Obama allowed his administration to admonish el-Sissi’s government on human rights. (AP)

Hale in Louisville ruled Friday that the suit against Trump, his campaign and three of his supporters can proceed. Hale found ample facts supporting allegations that the protesters’ injuries were a “direct and proximate result” of Trump’s actions, and noted that the Supreme Court has ruled out constitutional protections for speech that incites violence.

“It is plausible that Trump’s direction to ‘get ’em out of here’ advocated the use of force,” the judge wrote. “It was an order, an instruction, a command.” Lawyers for Trump and his campaign also argued that they cannot be held liable because they had no duty to the plaintiffs, who assumed the risk of injury when they decided to protest at the rally. The judge countered that under the law, every person has a duty to every other person to use care to prevent foreseeable injury. (AP)

Cleanup after highway fire Crews worked to clear debris Sunday from an Atlanta interstate span that collapsed in a raging fire, leaving commuters to brace for the first workweek without the key link to some of the city’s largest suburbs. Officials pledged after Thursday’s collapse of a 350-foot section of Interstate 85 that a replacement bridge would be built, but that could take months. Officials said the fire was started by a man smoking crack under the bridge. He was in jail on a $200,000 bond. (AP) MOSCOW

El-Sissi to test ‘chemistry’ with Trump

LOUISVILLE, KY. A federal judge has rejected President Trump’s free speech defense against a lawsuit accusing him of inciting violence against protesters at a campaign rally. Trump’s lawyers sought to dismiss the lawsuit by three protesters who say they were roughed up by his supporters at a March 1, 2016, rally in Louisville. They argued that Trump didn’t intend for his supporters to use force. Two women and a man say they were shoved and punched by audience members at Trump’s command. Much of it was captured

A respected Russian newspaper said it uncovered information that police in the Russian republic of Chechnya have rounded up more than 100 men suspected of homosexuality and that at least three have been killed. The report Saturday in Novaya Gazeta said it had confirmed the information with sources in the Chechen police and government, but gave no other details. Tar Heels versus Zags

NORTH CAROLINA VS. GONZAGA | 9:20 P.M. TONIGHT, CBS

Goliath versus Goliath

UNC has been a favorite for months; mid-major Gonzaga is no longer an underdog NCAA TOURNAMENT As the dust settled Saturday night inside University of Phoenix Stadium, an easy storyline emerged. Tonight’s national championship game will pit a natural underdog against a towering blueblood. It will be Gonzaga, out of the mid-major West Coast Conference, appearing in its first title game. It will be North Carolina, the program of Dean and MJ, of 20 Final Fours and five national championships. Leading up to the game, you will hear the theme constantly. And it will be woefully wrong. Ask Frank Martin, the South Carolina coach whose Gamecocks gave Gonzaga everything it could handle and still exited the tournament. “It’s not 1997 anymore,” Martin said. “They were Cinderella and all that pretty stuff in ’97. They’ve been in this thing for 20 consecutive years. They’re as high-major

as high-major can get.” Martin’s memory is a hair off — it was 1999 when Gonzaga marched to the Elite Eight and began its run of 19 consecutive bids. But he’s right about this: The title is not David vs. Goliath. It’s Goliath vs. Goliath. Since November, experts formed the consensus that North Carolina possessed more talent than any other team in the country. The Tar Heels start three juniors and two seniors. They have rebounding muscle in Kennedy Meeks and Isaiah Hicks, more than enough scoring punch from Justin Jackson and Joel Berry II and an intelligent Swiss Army knife in Theo Pinson. Since November, Gonzaga has accomplished more than any other team in the country. The Bulldogs plowed through a tough nonconference slate, dominated the WCC and enter tonight at 37-1. The Zags spent four weeks

ranked No. 1. They play eight or nine players, and those who come off the bench offer scant dropoff. They’ve been a 1 or 2 seed in three of the past five NCAA Tournaments.

It takes only one piece of evidence to prove Gonzaga is a powerhouse. Zach Collins decided to play there, and he comes off the bench. The 7-foot freshman might be in the NBA next year. He is an elite talent, and the Zags wield him only in spurts. He has the confidence and skills to swing a game, and he did so Saturday with 14 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks in 23 minutes. The combination of mountains Przemek Karnowski and Collins forms an effective wall in the low block. Outside the paint, the matchups will be equally magnificent. Nigel Williams-Goss of Gonzaga and Jackson are both smooth operators who seemingly know only how to make the right play. Berry and Josh Perkins will hound one another relentlessly. It’s going to be fantastic, and it will be a fair fight. ADAM KILGORE

University of Phoenix Stadium will fill up with basketball fans again tonight as North Carolina and Gonzaga vie for the national title. Here are three factors that could swing the game. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

3 Mathews from 3 North Carolina’s up-tempo offense often leads to open 3-point opportunities for opponents. Gonzaga’s Jordan Mathews was 4-for-8 from 3 on Saturday.

2 Karnowski’s vision In the first half against South Carolina, Zags center Przemek Karnowski took a finger in the right eye. He came back in, but it’s unclear if the injury will affect him.

1 Meeks’ emergence Kennedy Meeks has become a force down low for the Tar Heels, following up a 17-rebound night in the Elite Eight with a 25-point, 14-board output Saturday.

Window watching OUTLOOK As the Nationals begin the season still searching for their first playoff series win, change looms for the defending NL East champions. Free agency threatens to dislodge several pillars of their clubhouse: Jayson Werth after this season, and Bryce Harper, Daniel Murphy and others after next. Manager Dusty Baker is under contract only for this season. General manager Mike Rizzo’s deal expires after next year. The first generation of the organization to be successful might not have much time left. Some of them buy the idea that their window is closing. Others, who might have heard about a closing window once before, and then won a division title the year after it was supposedly shut, are more skeptical. Regardless, this season and next could bring the last chances to turn regular-season success into postseason magic. Change is coming to Washington, whether a title does or not. The team’s superstar is right fielder Bryce Harper, the 2015 NL MVP whose accolades could earn him a record-breaking contract in two years, when he becomes a first-time free agent. His status prompts endless analysis of his future. Will the Nationals bid to keep him? Does he want them to, or is the draw of a supersized market too strong? Can the Nationals even afford him? When people ask, Harper says the right things about his future, namely that he isn’t worried

about that right now because he still has two years to play in D.C. If the Nationals have a twoyear window, Harper, 24, does, too. He has two seasons to prove he is more MVP than midlevel All-Star, to prove he is more the 2015 Harper than the 2016 version. Hundreds of millions of dollars depend on it. The Nationals have built their tradition around Harper, but in trading for Adam Eaton and in holding tight to highly touted prospect Victor Robles, the team started building for a post-Harper world. In speedy Eaton and Robles, they can have left and center field covered by the time Harper’s contract expires, leaving them to re-sign him or find a corner outfielder to replace him. Rizzo and the Nationals are planning in case of Harper’s departure, which is not the same thing as counting on it. Harper said he trusts Rizzo’s plan and thinks that continuity will keep the Nationals within an acquisition or two of sustained success. “There’s so many guys on this club that can help us in the long haul as well,” Harper said. “Everybody talks about now. This year, next year — the window. But our window’s long.” Harper is the superstar, but the veteran leader in the clubhouse is Jayson Werth, 37, who will be a free agent after this year, his seventh with Washington. “My window is now,” said Werth, who isn’t ruling out

a return to the club, but also doesn’t know how likely it is. When Harper or Trea Turner or other young players talk about Werth’s clubhouse impact, they talk about his experience as a World Series hero for Philadelphia in 2008. In 2011, Werth signed with the then-hapless

Nationals, hoping to lead them to a World Series title. So far, they haven’t won it all. Whether they win this year, Werth said, will determine whether he views his Nationals tenure as a success. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer signed a seven-year deal in part because he wanted to be somewhere he could win long term. In his third year of title contention with the Nationals, Scherzer said “of course” there’s a window. “We’re in a win-now situation,” he said, “and that’s where you want to be.” Scherzer has a hypothesis about baseball sustainability: If a team gets production from young players, the ones with zero to six years of service time whose salaries are limited by arbitration, that team will win.

“Right now, we have guys that fit that mold,” Scherzer said. Turner, Anthony Rendon, Koda Glover and Joe Ross are players under team control long past the 2018 season. Though Scherzer doesn’t fall in that zero-to-six mold, he, Stephen Strasburg and Tanner Roark are all under contract past the 2018 season, too. The team will turn over around them, but the nucleus of the starting rotation tied for the best ERA in baseball since 2014 is not going anywhere. “You look at 2017, we’re going to be able to compete for a World Series,” Scherzer said. “But if you do a little counting around in the clubhouse, we should be able to be competitive for a few more years as well.” CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

trade with the White Sox. “Now I’m on the other end I guess, trying to watch him from the outfield and getting bored out there. There’s a disadvantage before, and now it’s an advantage.” On top of winning his second Cy Young last year, Scherzer led the NL in wins (20), innings pitched (2281/3) and strikeouts (284). Through the first half of 2016, Strasburg could have challenged Scherzer for postseason awards. Strasburg, a two-time All-Star, went 12-0 before the break with a 2.62 ERA. He failed to maintain that magic, finishing 3-4 before a torn pronator tendon in his throwing arm ended his season shortly before the playoffs. Aside from a start against the Cardinals in which the Nationals realized he was tipping his pitches, Strasburg has pitched competently this spring. When he and Scherzer are both healthy, they give the Nationals one of the most potent pitching combos in the major leagues.

BULLPEN When manager Dusty Baker announced last week that Blake Treinen would start the season as the Nationals’ ninth-inning specialist, the newly minted closer was understandably excited. But Baker said Treinen’s reaction came as a surprise. The skipper didn’t know how much the mild-mannered right-hander wanted the job, because he never had expressed a desire to close. Treinen, 28, later told Baker it “wasn’t his place to say it,” the manager recalled. “That’s Blake,” Baker said. “You have to understand how respectful Blake is.” Treinen’s “respectfulness” has been interpreted differently over the years. When he struggled so much in 2015 that he was sent to the minors, that friendliness felt like a weakness. Last year, when he held opposing hitters to a .220 average and left 84 percent of inherited runners on base, it did not seem like a factor. Treinen won the job this spring over Shawn Kelley, whose twice-repaired elbow eliminated him from contention, and Koda Glover, whose grit and demeanor often earned Baker’s praise. But GM Mike Rizzo always considered Treinen the most natural fit if the Nat couldn’t acquire a closer this winter, which is what happened when free agents Kenley Jansen and Mark Melancon spurned offers. STARTING PITCHING During their field trip to Annapolis on Saturday, the Nationals were surrounded by displays of power. Before facing the Red Sox in the inaugural Naval Academy Baseball Classic, Washington’s players were given a tour. They boarded a ship and wrapped their fingers around 50-caliber machine guns mounted atop Humvees. While a choir sang the national anthem at Max Bishop Stadium, four helicopters thundered overhead, briefly drowning out the voices below. When the clock on the scoreboard read 1406 hours, Washington sent its big gun to the mound. Max Scherzer, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, registered his third start of the spring. That Scherzer was able to pitch at all was impressive. He developed a stress fracture in the ring finger of his right hand late last season. By sheer ingenuity, throwing with lacrosse balls and tennis balls and then using a threefingered fastball grip, Scherzer was able to give the injury the requisite rest while keeping his arm in shape. He won’t make his regularseason debut until Friday at Philadelphia, but Washington’s plan for the home opener today against the Marlins shows the unique strength of the top of the rotation. Instead of Scherzer, who started the past two opening days for Washington, the club will send out Stephen Strasburg, who has previously had that honor three times. “That’s like having two number ones,” manager Dusty Baker said last week. With Scherzer missing opening day, he was in line to pitch at Navy for his final spring tuneup. Against a Red Sox lineup that

Max Scherzer, left, and Stephen Strasburg have started the past five opening day games for the Nationals.

Baker described as “potent,” Scherzer scattered six hits and allowed two runs in five innings, fighting his way through several at-bats en route to 91 pitches. Before facing Hanley Ramirez in the third, Scherzer let his pitching arm hang loose in front of his body and stared down the batter for an extra beat. Ramirez whiffed on three strikes. “It was nice to be able to face a lineup of their caliber,” Scherzer said. “I thought I took a step forward today in terms of getting back in the zone. And that’s what you look for in the spring.” Although Scherzer’s recovery has knocked him to fourth in the rotation, he remains the most feared starter on the staff. Center fielder Adam Eaton said that before joining the Nationals this offseason, facing Washington was “kind of intimidating” because of the team’s star power, notably on the mound. “I had to try and hit a 97 mile an hour sinker from Scherzer,” said Eaton, who came over in a

In the home locker room Saturday before the Naval Academy Baseball Classic in Annapolis, Turner played the role of seasoned pro. The 23-year-old spoke in a soft monotone, carefully considering how to answer questions about the expectations he spawned with his performance in 73 games last season. “I expect a lot of myself, sometimes almost too much, because I try to be perfect,” he told Express. “And this game, it’s impossible to be perfect. No one is. It’s a game of failure.” Turner’s answer to imperfection is effort. He said he has the ability to compartmentalize, to put aside failure and harness his focus for each challenge within each game. ESPN analyst Eduardo Perez predicted that Turner will be the 201 7 NL MVP a year after finishing second in rookie of the year voting. “People who win those awards compete each and every day or each and every at-bat or pitch,” said Turner, who is assured today of one accomplishment he couldn’t claim in 2016: starting on opening day.

In the last at-bat of his superlative spring, Harper smacked a fifth-inning line drive Saturday that gave him time to reach second base. Turner, hesitating at third because the ball might have been caught, brought the crowd of Navy cadets to its feet as he careened home and scored sliding face-first. Expect to see Harper drive in Turner plenty of times this season. Two years removed from winning NL MVP, Harper, 24, is a popular pick by experts from outlets such as Fox Sports, Bleacher Report and MLB.com to win his second. In 24 spring games, he hit .310 with a 1.216 OPS and eight homers (more than double his total in any other spring). On Saturday, Harper listed his health as the top accomplishment of the spring. But Turner said Harper’s spring stats aren’t devoid of meaning. “Anyone can do it for a week,” Turner said, “but over the course of the whole spring training he was locked in. Hopefully he can continue that the whole season.”

Murphy has hit at an astronomical level since October 2015, when he was MVP of the NLCS, batting .529 with four home runs to lead the Mets’ sweep of the Cubs. Last year, when the Nationals signed him as a free agent after their other options fell through, he was the only man aside from Kris Bryant to get a first-place vote for MVP. But it still seems like everyone is waiting for Murphy, 32, to come back to Earth. There are no headlines screaming that Murphy will be MVP this year. But why not? He was denied the batting title by one point last season. His devotion to studying analytics has been well chronicled; he has found success poring over launch angles and exit velocities. And while teammates lounged in the locker room Saturday, Murphy diligently performed exercises to prevent another gluteal strain like he had last fall. Asked for a few minutes of his time, he apologized on his way out the door. He was one of the first in line for batting practice.

The season is a success if: Their starting pitching stays healthy. While this can generally be said of any team, the Mets rely on rotation health more than most, if only because at its best, their projected rotation of Noah Syndergaard, Jacob DeGrom, Steven Matz, Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler is arguably the best in the game — and perhaps enough to push them past the Nationals in the East.

The season is a success if: They manage to field a solid team in their first season in a new stadium. This season is about giving the top-rated farm system in baseball (per Baseball America) another year of maturation and assembling the pieces to build around shortstop Dansby Swanson — a consensus top-five prospect who looks like a franchise player — for a title run in 2018 and beyond.

The season is a success if: They don’t collapse under the weight of losing Jose Fernandez, who died in September in a boating accident. The tragedy is both emotional and practical: Giancarlo Stanton and the Marlins must make do without an ace with a 2.86 ERA last year. Additions Edinson Volquez, Dan Straily and Jeff Locke, the last of whom will start the year on the disabled list, should help with pitching depth.

The season is a success if: Their lengthy rebuild turns a corner. The buyout of Ryan Howard’s contract symbolized a clean break from the last great Phillies era. Catcher Cameron Rupp is a stalwart, and there is the start of a solid core . Five members of the starting lineup and three starting pitchers are 27 or younger. Shortstop prospect J.P. Crawford could be called up by midseason.

Division winners projected by The Washington Post: Nationals (NL East), Cubs (NL Central), Dodgers (NL West), Red Sox (AL East), Indians (AL Central), Astros (AL West)

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

All caught up in the melodrama TELEVISION There are 13 episodes of Netflix’s agonizingly sordid new drama “13 Reasons Why,” based on Jay Asher’s best-selling 2007 youngadult novel about the suicide of a high school junior. And all 13 super-sullen hours make up a meandering effort that offers no more wisdom or insight about depression, bullying and suicide than one of those old “ABC Afterschool Specials.” Yet, it’s very possible “13 Reasons Why” will be quite the hit among the young and bingeful set. For all the clumsiness, the show correctly depends on the river of angst that runs beneath the cultural psyche of the American teen. You can never underestimate its entertainment value — which we all know, because we’ve all been there. From a creative team containing actress/singer Selena Gomez and “Spotlight” director Tom

McCarthy, “13 Reasons Why” begins with its central, impossibly emo premise: A student at Liberty High named Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) has committed suicide, leaving behind a shoe box full of cassette tapes (yes, in 2017) on which she recounts the ways that 13 people — including Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), the central character and boy who harbored a crush on Hannah — are collectively responsible for the 13 reasons she has decided to take her own life. The box of cassettes, per Hannah’s instructions, are to be passed around to each of these people so that they can listen to them and truly understand her pain — and wallow in it as deeply as they like. It’s an unbelievable and selfish conceit, a protracted example of the teenager who fantasizes how everyone will react when she or he is gone. It seems remarkably, even dangerously, naive in its understanding of suicide. Whatever “13 Reasons Why” gets right about teen tendencies toward melodrama fades as the

Hannah (Katherine Langford, above) takes her own life and leaves behind a box of cassettes for 13 people, including Clay (Dylan Minnette, below).

A passion project “13 Reasons Why” executive producer Selena Gomez was 15 when she and her mother optioned the rights to Jay Asher’s young-adult novel, which explores such topics as bullying and mental health. Gomez, who has lupus and battles anxiety and depression, told The New York Times that the story “was mirroring what was going on in my life.” She added, “[Asher] understood that I knew what it meant to be bullied. I went to the biggest high school in the world, which is the Disney Channel.” (EXPRESS)

series fumbles around with tone and emotional accuracy. The characters very rarely come across as real, perhaps because

the story itself is so contrived. The show seems intent on keeping viewers in an ambivalent state about whether Hannah is a sympathetic or trustworthy character, making it an especially cruel experience to watch. What “13 Reasons Why” could really use is the deft touch shown 20 years ago by Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick in their short-livedyet-forever-loved series “My So-Called Life,” which allowed a young Claire Danes to say in a few gestures what so many teenagers (in any era) truly agonize over, while also capturing the helplessness that parents can feel during the rockiest phases of adolescence. “13 Reasons Why” exhibits no such grace.

The latest season of the Fox drama is a nine-episode continuation of the show, which was last seen on the network in 2009. Most of the original cast returns, including Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell.

“You mind if I crash here?”

Does the world really need another sitcom based on the life of a standup comic? I would have said no — until I started watching HBO’s Crashing” (Sundays at 10:30 p.m.). The series is the brainchild of America’s resident comic mastermind, Judd Apatow, and Pete Holmes, a comedian I’d never heard of. But he’s been

around: TBS talk show host, writer for short-lived sitcoms like “Outsourced” and, most impressively of all, occasional New Yorker cartoonist. On “Crashing,” Holmes plays a version of himself: “the dorky churchy guy,” as he puts it. The fictionalized Pete is an aspiring comedian who for 12 years has earned zero dollars for his comedy, living off his wife’s income while he does free gigs. It’s like he’s in

he winds up “crashing” at the pads of comedians he runs into: so far, Artie Lange, T.J. Walker and Sarah Silverman. And this hapless goofball is thrust into a world where sex and drugs surround him. He learns how to fake cocaine: “You blow out

instead of sucking in.” Last night, Pete did get more than a little lost in his journey to Big Boyhood. He blew the dream job he just landed — audience warm-up comic for the “Rachael Ray Show” — by cracking vulgar jokes about an audience member who turned out to be Ray’s mother. So yes, sitcoms based on stand-up comics can be fresh, poignant and chock-full of weird humor. The finale airs Sunday and the show has been renewed for a second season, so Pete will continue crashing in the literal and figurative senses. Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

It was this tidbit in the story that really blew up over the weekend: “Many career diplomats … have been instructed not to speak to him directly — or even make eye contact.” This led to comparisons with Medusa and Miranda Priestly, the stoic magazine editor played by Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada.” An Associated Press reporter who covers the State Department has disputed the eye-contact claim.

@BARSTOOLSPORTS on Pornhub’s

April Fool’s Day prank. Users who pulled up a video to watch on the website on April 1 received a pop-up message informing them that their video has been shared to all their social media platforms as part of Pornhubs new automatic video sharing feature. Needless to say, many of the site’s viewers reported feeling “shook.”

“Pornhub’s April Fool’s joke gave no less than 3,000 people a heart attack today”

“I feel the sense of injustice from the black and white cat in this clip. ‘No. He rang my bell.’ ” @SIMONNRICKETTS on an adorable video posted Thursday by Japanese cat Twitter account @b_ru_ru that has since gone viral. The video shows two cats ringing individual bells to get their owner to give them a snack. Many took notice when the gray cat began ringing the other cat’s bell, eliciting a look of despair (pictured above).

the default avatar for new accounts from the infamous egg to a gray floating head and portrait. Many expressed outrage at the change.

“The greatest trick the devil ever played was putting a webcam in April the giraffe’s enclosure” @THEVICKSTER_SA on the seemingly never-ending saga of April, the pregnant giraffe. New York’s Animal Adventure Park said Friday that April was set to give birth April 1, leading some to think she — and her popular live stream — was actually an elaborate April Fool’s joke. April was still pregnant late Sunday.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may have trouble laying out a schedule that lets you get everything done, as too many others have conflicting engagements.

TODAY: We may start off partly sunny, but a system to the west sends more clouds our way by afternoon. Most of us should stay dry much of the day — so the weather looks good for the Nats’ 1 :05 p.m. home opener — with a few light showers possible after 5 p.m. Rain is likely overnight with the chance of a few downpours.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Pleasure and profit go hand in hand — at least for a time. Take advantage of an unforeseen opportunity, and don’t be bashful. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may attract a good deal of criticism for approaching a routine problem in an unusual way, but some will jump on your bandwagon.

‘Same,’ said every one of Ryan’s other co-stars Last week on Australia’s “Studio 10,” Melissa Joan Hart said she almost dated Ryan Reynolds, who starred with her in the 1996 TV movie, “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” “I had a boyfriend at the time,” she said. “[Reynolds] was a really, really nice guy, probably would have been a great boyfriend, and I didn’t end up with the other guy, so maybe I should have taken a chance.” (EXPRESS)

ODD COUPLES

We’re truly lost in the Twilight Zone

“When I hear about her or see her, I think, ‘Ah, there’s that person, that person in the world.’ ”

After Naya Rivera, 30, and David Spade, 52, were photographed Thursday cuddling at a pool in Honolulu, sources confirmed to the tabloids that the two are dating. “They started seeing each other a couple weeks ago,” an insider told Us Weekly. Another told E! News they’ve been trying to keep their relationship private. Rivera, who in November filed for divorce from her husband of two years, Ryan Dorsey, poked fun at headlines about her new romance on her Snapchat: “The Easter bunny and the f---ing tooth fairy are for sure dating. I just saw them.” (EXPRESS)
