page three Holiday in D.C. delays Tax Day for America THE DISTRICT This year, the rest of the country might finally learn about Emancipation Day — a holiday little known beyond D.C. that marks the anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the nation’s capital. The holiday, which shuts down city government, will be celebrated April 15, also known as Tax Day. That means the entire country gets a three-day reprieve on filing its 2015 taxes, making the official tax filing deadline Monday, April 18. Emancipation Day typically is celebrated April 16, the day in 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Compensated Emancipation Act, which freed about 3,100 slaves living in D.C. But this year, April 16 falls on a Saturday, so the District will celebrate the holiday on Friday, April 15. D.C. holidays are treated as federal holidays for tax-filing purposes, according

to the Internal Revenue Service. That pushes the official taxfiling deadline to the next business day, Monday, April 18. And everyone — residents of Florida, California and everywhere in between — will receive an extension, not just D.C. residents. “When April 15 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, a return is considered timely filed if it is filed on the next
succeeding day that is not a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday,” IRS spokesman Ubon Mendie said in an email, referencing the U.S. law pertaining to the IRS. “The term ‘legal holiday’ includes a legal holiday observed in the District of Columbia.” In 2007, the country had a twoday reprieve to file its taxes because April 15 fell on a Sunday and the next day — Monday, April 16 — was D.C. Emancipation Day. D.C. government shuts down for Emancipation Day, although the federal government and most private businesses in the city remain open. Council member Vincent Orange introduced legislation, and then-Mayor Anthony A. Williams declared Emancipation Day a D.C. holiday in 2000. The holiday was officially observed for the first time as a public holiday that closed the city government in 2005. The holiday is most notably marked by a citywide parade in which city leaders and schoolchildren march along Pennsylvania Avenue. PERRY STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Lawmakers vote to ban smoking in private clubs D.C. lawmakers have voted to ban smoking pot in private clubs. Tuesday’s 7-6 vote by the D.C. Council comes two months after the council left the door open for pot clubs by creating a task force to study the issue. Possession of up to 2 ounces of pot for personal use is legal in the nation’s capital, but smoking in public remains illegal. Pot advocates argued that private clubs would provide a safe place for people to smoke outside the home. But Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser has maintained that unregulated pot clubs would be bad for the city and create problems for police. (AP) THE DISTRICT
D.C. mulls travel ban to states with anti-gay laws D.C. lawmakers will consider banning official travel by city workers to any state with laws that discriminate against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The city’s mayor, Democrat Muriel Bowser, has already banned city travel to North Carolina because of a new law that excludes LGBT people from protections against discrimination. The bill introduced Tuesday would make the travel ban part of city law.
An update would have stopped MedStar hack REGION The hackers who seriously disrupted operations at a large hospital chain recently and held some data hostage apparently broke into a computer server left vulnerable despite urgent public warnings since at least 2007 that it needed to be fixed with a simple update. The hackers exploited design flaws that had persisted on the MedStar Health Inc. network, according to a person familiar with the investigation who spoke on condition of anonymity because this person was not authorized
to discuss the findings publicly. The flaws were in a JBoss application server. The FBI, which is investigating, declined to discuss how the hackers broke in. The JBoss technology is popular because it allows programmers to write custom-built software tools that can be quickly made available across a company, but security researchers discovered it was routinely misconfigured to allow unauthorized outside users to gain control. The U.S. government, Red Hat and others issued urgent warnings about the security problem and
a related flaw in February 2007, March 2010 and again earlier this week. The government warned in 2007 that the problem could disrupt operations and open the door to unauthorized disclosures of confidential information. Fixing the problem involved installing an available update or manually deleting two lines of software code. It was not immediately clear why Medstar, which operates 10 hospitals in Maryland and D.C., was still vulnerable years after those warnings. TAMI ABDOLLAH (AP)

Metro GM: No need for long rail closures Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld said Tuesday he has no plans to shut down any rail lines for months at a time to do maintenance work, saying more targeted repairs can be done by shutting down segments of track between stations. “I don’t see any need for a long closure of any part of the system,” Wiedefeld said. If repairs require shutting down sections of track, he said, bus bridges would be set up to carry rail passengers between stations. Wiedefeld said he would present his ideas for getting the work done in less disruptive ways in the next few weeks. He said those options could include reducing train operating hours to allow more time for workers to get to difficult spots, such as elevated tracks, that can’t be reached when trains are running. Iceland PM steps down amid ‘Panama Papers’ REYKJAVIK, ICELAND The leak of millions of records on offshore accounts claimed its first high-profile victim Tuesday as Iceland’s prime minister resigned amid outrage over revelations he had used such a shell company to shelter large sums while Iceland’s economy was in crisis. The fall of Icelandic leader Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson is the biggest fallout so far from the publication of the names of rich and powerful people linked to the leaks, dubbed the Panama Papers. China and Russia, meanwhile, are suppressing the news and rejecting any allegations of impropriety by government officials named in the leak of more than 11 million financial documents from a Panamanian law firm. Officials in Ukraine, Argentina and other countries are also facing questions about possibly dubious offshore tax-avoidance schemes. The reports are from a global group of news organizations working with the Washingtonbased International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. They have been processing records from the Panama-based Mossack Fonseca law firm that were first leaked to Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

Records: Leader owned offshore company with links to country’s banks
Iceland’s Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson is the first political leader to fall after a massive leak exposed leaders’ ties to offshore holding companies.
The announcement that Gunnlaugsson was stepping down came from the country’s agriculture minister. It followed the refusal by Iceland’s president to dissolve parliament and call a new election, and after thousands of Icelanders protested outside the parliament building in Reykjavik. No replacement has been named, and Iceland’s president did not immediately confirm that he had accepted the resignation. Gunnlaugsson has denied any wrongdoing and said he and his wife have paid all their taxes. He also said his financial holdings didn’t affect his negotiations with Iceland’s creditors during the country’s acute financial crisis. Gunnlaugsson sought to call a
snap election Tuesday, but President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson refused, saying he wanted to consult with other party leaders before agreeing to end the coalition government between Gunnlaugsson’s center-right Progressive Party and the Independence Party. The leaked documents allege that Gunnlaugsson and his wife set up a company called Wintris in the British Virgin Islands with the help of the Panamanian law firm. Gunnlaugsson is accused of a conflict of interest for failing to disclose his involvement in the company, which held interests in failed Icelandic banks that his government was responsible for overseeing.
The aurochs, a species of massive, long-horned cattle depicted in the prehistoric cave paintings of Lascaux, France, could soon roam Europe once again. The Taurus Program, a partnership of ecologists, geneticists, historians and cattle breeders, is working to re-create and reintroduce the extinct aurochs by crossbreeding modern cattle that have aurochs characteristics in a process known as back breeding. Lab-based genetic engineering is not required. A combination of hunting and conversion of wild pastures to farmland reduced Europe’s wild aurochs to a small remnant population in a Polish forest, where it was protected by royal order until the last one died in 1628. President Barack Obama on Tuesday championed federal steps to deter a corporate financial practice known as a “tax inversion,” calling it “one of the most insidious tax loopholes out there.” He called on Congress to close the loophole “for good,” saying it shortchanges the country while saddling the middle class with the bill. Obama praised regulations issued the day before by the Treasury Department aimed at making more difficult these inversions, in which U.S. companies combine with foreign firms to reduce U.S. taxes. nation+world POLITICS Donald Trump says that as president he will force Mexico to pay for a border wall by threatening to cut off the flow of billions of dollars in payments that immigrants send home to the country, an idea that could decimate the Mexican economy and set up an unprecedented showdown between the United States and a key diplomatic ally. In a two-page memo to The Washington Post, Trump outlined for the first time how he would seek to force Mexico to pay for his 1,000-mile border wall, which
Trump has claimed could be built for about $8 billion — a figure numerous experts have described as dubious. The proposal would jeopardize a stream of cash that many economists say is vital for Mexico’s struggling economy. But the feasibility of Trump’s plan is unclear both legally and politically. In the memo, Trump said he would threaten to change a rule under the USA Patriot Act antiterrorism law to cut off a portion of the funds sent to Mexico through money transfers, commonly known as remittances.

The threat would be withdrawn if Mexico made “a one-time payment of $5-10 billion” to pay for the border wall, he wrote. “It’s an easy decision for Mexico,” he said in the memo. After the wall is funded, Trump wrote, transfer payments could continue “to flow into their country year after year.” Nearly $25 billion was sent home by Mexicans living abroad in 2015, according to the Mexican central bank. A new business as usual Corporate America’s embrace of gay rights appears to have hit a stunning tipping point
Tesla’s success could set a new norm for cars
a right to same-sex marriage. In addition to these broader trends, Fidas admits some companies may also be paying attention to what their competitors are doing. There’s “strength and comfort in numbers,” she said. A recent working paper from professors at Duke University and Harvard Business School surveyed people about Indiana’s “religious liberty” law, including a statement in some of the surveys that was attributed to Apple CEO Tim Cook or other leaders about how the law would allow discrimination. In those surveys, support for the law dropped sharply and the people who were told about Cook’s discrimination concerns also said they were more likely to buy Apple products. In other words, the business case for speaking out about gay rights may go beyond protecting the rights and interests of their employees.
Most best-selling cars in America, such as the Honda Accord or Nissan Altima, hit around 300,000 in sales every year. Tesla saw 276,000 people sign up to buy its new all-electric Model 3 sedan — in two days. That number, which exceeded optimistic forecasts, upends traditional thinking about how to sell cars and is expected to spur the auto industry to shift to market electric technology to consumers, analysts said. Car manufacturers have long dabbled in electric technology. But the category was measured in thousands — not hundreds of thousands — of cars sold. Tesla now appears to be doing what no other has been able to accomplish — sell electric cars to big crowds. Even if some pre-orders for the $35,000 Model 3 are canceled — or if Tesla struggles to meet demand, which analysts say is likely — the company has shown that consumer appetite for a well-designed car can be robust, even if it is electric, said James McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester: “It’s a watershed moment for rethinking vehicles all together. Tesla is putting together the idea a vehicle needs to be cutting edge and cool, more like an iPhone.” The surge in orders is all the more impressive because most people will be paying an average of $42,000 for the Model 3, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said. The $35,000 model is a stripped-down version.

ANALYSIS The news releases rolled in last week, one after another, the numbers swelling with each one. More than 80 companies were demanding that North Carolina repeal a law that limits bathroom options for transgender people and blocks local anti-discrimination rules. A day later, it was more than 90. Then more than 100. Then more than 120. On Tuesday, PayPal said it was scrapping a $3.6-million, 400-job expansion in North Carolina, the biggest tangible economic backlash so far to the new state law. “This decision reflects PayPal’s deepest values and our strong belief that every person has the right to be treated equally, and with dignity and respect,” the company said in a statement. It’s an extraordinary shift from eight years ago, when California’s Proposition 8 came up for a vote and the number of companies that lined up to publicly support same-sex marriage rights were fewer than five. It’s even a shift from two years ago, when the corporations speaking out against a “religious liberty” law in Arizona numbered 83. Corporate America’s evolution on gay rights appears to have reached a tipping point, one where so many companies have taken a stand on the issue that the risk of speaking out has been superseded by the risk of not doing so. Public sentiment surely is playing a role. A recent survey by Public Religion Research Institute finds that 71 percent of Americans support laws that would protect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people from

discrimination in jobs, housing and public accommodations. Deena Fidas, the director of the workplace equality program at Human Rights Campaign, an advocacy group for gay rights, describes the now commonplace public support from companies as the result of more than a decade of outreach between the LGBT and corporate communities. “It’s perfectly understandable for the casual observer to look at North Carolina and think it’s trendy now to be pro-LGBT,” she said in an interview Monday. “But there’s a very strong structure behind this outreach.” One factor has been the growth of the HRC’s Corporate Equality Index, which scores companies on their friendliness to LGBT issues and publishes it. When it was launched in 2002, just 13 companies received a perfect score. Fourteen years later, 407 have one. Another factor, Fidas said, were

the state-level fights over samesex marriage. A watershed moment happened in 2011, when New York became the largest state to legalize same-sex marriage. In the years that followed, said Fidas, “the business voice grew from just ‘it’s the right thing to do’ to ‘it’s good for our business.’ ” If there was a final straw for a willingness to speak out publicly on the issue, it was last year’s Supreme Court ruling, which upheld

Threats and violence directed at U.S. abortion clinics increased sharply in 2015, according to the National Abortion Federation, which attributed the surge to the release of undercover videos intended to discredit Planned Parenthood. According to the federation, death threats targeting abortion providers increased from one in 2014 to 94 in 2015, while incidents of vandalism at clinics rose from 12 to 67. The most violent occurred in November, when a gunman opened fire at a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Colorado Springs, Colo., killing three people and wounding nine. (AP)

Bentley admitted making inappropriate remarks to one of his top aides, who has since resigned, but denied accusations of an affair. The resolution by Rep. Some lawmakers have said impeachment discussions are premature until investigations into Bentley’s conduct have been completed. (AP)
San Francisco approved a measure Tuesday making it the first place in the nation to require businesses to provide fully paid leave for new parents. Advocates say the issue is gaining momentum across the country much like the debate over a higher minimum wage. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted unanimously in favor of the measure after supporters said six weeks of fully paid leave is needed because too many families can’t afford to take time off after a child is born or adopted. Small business owners countered that it’s the latest in a long list of mandates, like paid sick leave, that unfairly targets them. (AP)

Oldies but goodies?
What’s new? Murphy’s bat, for starters NATIONALS The Nationals signed second baseman Daniel Murphy this winter, after years of watching him torment them with the New York Mets, because they knew first-hand how tough of an out he can be. And in his first game with Washington on Monday, his disciplined approach and highcontact bat helped save the day. Murphy, who has a three-year, $37.5 million deal, was a pest for Braves pitchers in a 4-3 win. He drove in two runs, walked twice, smashed a solo home run and had the go-ahead RBI with a slicing opposite-field double in the 10th inning of a back-and-forth game. “Classic Daniel Murphy,” left fielder Jayson Werth said. One game is far too small a sample to judge a hitter and his impact on the lineup, but consider the two situations in which
Murphy drove in runs. Shadows during the middle innings of the afternoon game split the field in half, making it hard for hitters to see the mound. Yet in the fourth inning against starter Julio Teheran, Murphy skied a 2-0 pitch to center field for a solo home run. “I saw it OK,” he said. “I didn’t see it great in a couple of the walks. Just fortunate that none of the pitches were in the zone.” In his 10th-inning at-bat that proved to be the game-winner, Murphy faced reliever Eric O’Flaherty. Murphy had faced him before and shared a clubhouse with him last season in New York. Murphy didn’t bite on O’Flaherty’s first three pitches, all fastballs called balls. Manager Dusty Baker let Murphy swing on 3-0, but Murphy took a fastball on the inside corner before smacking a fastball over the plate down the left-field line. “A great start to the year,” he said of the victory. a polished left-handed bat to a lineup that was too right-handed last year. He has some power, evidenced by his playoff heroics for the Mets. And he is hard to strike out, especially valuable in a
lineup with several power hitters. Defensively, Murphy was involved in a key play: He was the first player in MLB to experience the new rules about second base slides. Runners must be able to remain on or within reach of the base after a slide. But in the seventh, Nick Markakis raced to second after a grounder by Hector Olivera to third baseman Anthony Rendon. Markakis slid left of the base and at Murphy, knocking him down. The relay didn’t beat Olivera to first, but umpires ruled it a double play because of Markakis’ slide. In the last 4.7 seconds, Villanova uses a play Wright has long taught NCAA BASKETBALL Some plays you can’t draw up. Other plays you can. The double-clutch 3-pointer North Carolina’s Marcus Paige made came right off a playground. It might go down as college basketball’s most spectacular footnote. The buzzer-beating 3 that Villanova’s Kris Jenkins made on top of that was the result of months, even years, of practice. It will go down as one of
the sport’s most memorable game-winners. Two buckets in 4.7 seconds Monday night turned a tense, back-and-forth national title game into something even better. Jenkins, who played at Gonzaga College High School in D.C., walked away the winner. His 3 at the buzzer, two steps behind the arc and with a 6-foot-9 defender flying in his face, gave Villanova a 77-74 victory for the program’s second national title. Coach Jay Wright has been coaching that play forever. With the score tied and 4.7 seconds left, Jenkins inbounded under the Villanova basket to

The junior spotted up, and with defender Isaiah Hicks running at him, launched the shot. “I think every shot’s going in,” Jenkins said, “and this one was no different.” The Wildcats (35-5) took the title for the first time since 1985, when coach Rollie Massimino’s squad stunned Georgetown. Trump’s faith helped golfer launch career THE MASTERS An invitation to the Masters might be only the second-best offer Jim Herman got this week. After Herman won the Shell Open on Sunday, Donald Trump joked that Herman, a former assistant golf pro at one of the mogul’s resorts, might be considered for a cabinet post in a Trump administration. “That’s ... the kind of character you want,” Trump said Monday. “Somebody who can handle the pressure.” Trump was laughing, but was serious when he added, “I’m very happy and proud to have helped him out.” Herman, 38, is a self-taught scrambler who got his first PGA Tour victory Sunday in Houston, which qualified him for Augusta. He and Trump met in 2006 when Herman was an assistant pro at a Trump course in Bedminster, N.J. “He’s been a big supporter of mine,” Herman said. “He helped me early on in my years financially and maybe just a little shot in the arm of confidence.” Trump played with Herman and said he recognized his talent. Trump staked him, at age 28, for a shot on the Web.com Tour. “He’d shoot really low rounds when we played and ... I’d ask him after a round, ‘Where are you going after this?’ And he’d say, ‘I’m giving somebody a lesson.’ “I’d say, ‘You got to give [professional golf] a shot. You got a real chance to be something special.’ ” JIM LITKE (AP)

Free to be a happy camper Summer break is a time for sleep-away camps, enrichment and exploration for the children of parents with means. But for families on tight budgets, it can be stressful and difficult to fill those long summer days. It is not, however, impossible. Schools and community organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of providing low- or no-cost summer opportunities for low-income children, for whom the hot months otherwise are a liability when they are apt to fall behind more affluent peers.

“Even when you have a great K-12 education, even that is not enough for low-income kids,” said Tiffany Gueye, chief executive of Building Educated Leaders for Life, or BELL, a nonprofit that — with the help of a partnership with the YMCA — is providing free summer programs for 15,000 children in more than 60 communities this summer, including in the Washington area. BELL and the YMCA will offer summer programs for hundreds of students at Seaton and Cleveland elementary schools in the District and at Cora Kelly Elementary in Alexandria. Starting this summer, BELL also is running summer programs for second- and third-graders in Montgomery County Public Schools.
The six-week programs include math and literacy instruction with a teacher and a tutor. There also is time for playing games; enrichment activities such as hip-hop poetry, coding, cooking and chess; and field trips to local museums and colleges. During the summer, nearly all children forget some of what they learned during the school year. But researchers have discovered that children living in poverty tend to forget more; according to one 2007 study, by ninth grade two-thirds of the achievement gap between children from lowincome and middle-class families can be explained by what happens during the summer. But studies by outside researchers have found that

children who take part in BELL’s programs gain a month’s worth of math skills and 1.5 months of reading skills. “We’re really focused on the kids who need it the most,” Gueye said. Not that children always recognize academics as the camp’s first priority: “When we ask kids at the end what they liked, they typically tell us snacks, first, and then their tutor, and then field trips.” School principals play an important role in determining which students fill the limited seats BELL is able to offer. But there are other options in the District and its suburbs, including opportunities that focus on play, the arts and hands-on science. Calleva, a Montgomery County nonprofit that offers outdoor adventure camps for kids ages 4 through 17, costs between $500 per week for day camps and $1,045 per week for programs that involve traveling. But families in need can apply for scholarships (though Calleva is no longer accepting applications
“Even when you have a great K-12 education, even that is not enough for lowincome kids.” TIFFANY GUEYE, chief executive of BELL, a nonprofit that provides free summer camp for children

It is always worth looking on the website or calling to ask about available funds,” said Stephanie Vordick, of Tips on Trips and Camps, a service that advises parents on summer opportunities. Vordick said religious groups and nonprofits often offer scholarships and low-cost programs, and older children can benefit from low- or no-cost volunteer service projects. “These can be in the U.S. or
abroad, and they can be lifechanging for a teen attendee,” Vordick said. Many local parks departments offer a wide range of camps, and most offer scholarships. Arlington, for example, offers camps that focus on a variety of activities, like sports, legos, puppets and guitar playing. Children who qualify for reduced-price lunch at school have to pay half the cost of Arlington’s summer camp programs, according to its fee-reduction policy. Children who qualify for free lunch pay 25 percent of the cost. Montgomery County has a similar summer-camp scholarship program for low-income families who are receiving assistance from other county agencies, according to its camp guide. For teens, there are summer opportunities that not only build leadership skills, but also pay. Still going camping after all these years 1.5M Summer camp started with a simple premise: Get back to nature
Justin Bieber, pop music’s enfant terrible, went to one. So did former President George W. Bush, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, musicians Carly Simon and Adam Levine, actress Gwyneth Paltrow, sports executive Mark Cuban and philosopher/ linguist Noam Chomsky. They all went to summer camp, the American tradition that began in 1861 with the opening of the first organized camp in Washington, Conn., known as the Gunnery Camp. The now multibillion-dollar camp industry has had its ups and downs over the years, but today, some 11 million young people attend a total of more than 12,000 summer camps across the United States, including about 7,000 sleepaway camps. Once not much more than stations in the woods — usually near a lake — where kids could hike and boat and swim, today’s camps offer a variety of

possibilities. Some have stayed rustic and cost a few hundred dollars, while others charge more than $10,000 and offer a rich array of options for kids, with multimillion-dollar facilities, Olympic-level sports coaches and niche programs. For some, camp is the highlight of their young lives. Jamie Shor, now president of the PR Collaborative in Washington, D.C., couldn’t wait to go to Camp Wohelo in Waynesboro, Pa., for eight weeks every year, from 1976
to 1982, starting when she was 9 years old. Being chosen captain of the “blue team” when she was 15, she said, gave her confidence that took her through high school. But for others, such as her two now-teenaged children, pretty much everything was better than going to camp. “I loved it, but my kids didn’t have the camper gene,” she said. Her son went to camp when he was 7 years old and sent a letter to his grandmother that said, “This is the werst [sic] decision I ever made.” Camp organizations love to talk about what they say are the many benefits of going to camp, often citing research they have sponsored showing that kids gain confidence, independence and problem-solving abilities. But there is also independent research that shows how mentally and physically positive spending time in nature can be for people who live stressful lives in the city. A recent story in National Geographic, for example, relates how David Strayer, a cognitive psychologist at the University CONTINUED ON PAGE S6

of Utah, found that a group of Outward Bound participants “performed 50 percent better on creative problem-solving tasks” after backpacking in the wilderness for just three days. Camps, in fact, started as part of a back-to-nature movement in the late 1800s, according to the book “A Manufactured Wilderness: Summer Camps and the Shaping of American Youth 18901960,” by Abigail A. Van Slyck. She notes that protective labor legislation and compulsory school attendance laws had led students to spend more time in school and that there was concern that kids were becoming “weakly” and were doomed to spend summers loafing around doing nothing. The earliest-known camp, the Gunnery Camp, was named after its founders, Frederick W. and Abigail Gunn, who took the boys they taught at their home school

Other camps began to pop up in different parts of the U.S. and Canada, including Keewaydin Camp, founded in 1894 on Lake Temagami in Ontario. Keewaydin today is known as the oldest canoe trip camp in the world — and the oldest camp to operate continuously on the same site in North America. Michael Eisner, the businessman who headed Disney Studios for two decades, attended Keewaydin. He loved it so much that he wrote a 2005 memoir, “Camp,” extolling the “life lessons” he learned there as a camper and counselor. As he put it in a speech in 2001: “On these canoe trips, we could never survive the first day if we didn’t practice teamwork, show initiative, handle adversity, listen well and, not least important, maintain a sense of humor.” VALERIE STRAUSS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Parents and kids reunite after weeks apart on visiting day at Camp Manitou in Parry Sound, Ontario.
Get the most out of your quality time Visiting day can take a toll on campers if you don’t take these steps Sometime this summer, a few weeks after sleep-away camp starts and a few weeks before it ends, campers’ parents will come for a visit. Their counselors promise them it will be a fun-filled family reunion where kids get to show why they love camp so much, but it could easily become a stressful few hours that leaves campers homesick and parents sad. Here are some things you should know to make the day a good one.
It’s the day camps love to hate “No more visiting day? Sign me up!” joked Sandy Rubenstein, co-owner of Camp Wingate Kirkland on Cape Cod, Mass. “It’s hard for the camper and for the family, and sometimes
it’s unpredictable who it affects more,” explained Sandy’s husband, Will. “There are veteran overnight campers who’ve been here two, three, four, even five years. They can be sailing along just fine and then on visiting day, they hit the reset button emotionally.” “Visiting day is beneficial to the parents, not necessarily the campers,” said Matt Stoltz, director of Island Lake Camp in Starrucca, Pa. “While they look forward to showing their parents all that they have learned, they are apprehensive about their parents leaving.” Aside from the day’s emotions, logistics can be challenging too. A few years ago, mom and lifestyle blogger Amy Selling posted photos and video clips on her blog, showing crowds of parents on visiting day behind yellow “CAUTION” tape to keep them from racing in to find their kids. “While I completely understand
the feeling and the determination of wanting to see your kid,” Selling wrote, “this just goes beyond any level.”
Put the focus on the child Back in the 1960s and ’70s, there was no visiting day at the camp Melanie Kwestel attended. “We loved the break,” recalled Kwestel, of Fair Lawn, N.J. “We didn’t want to see our parents. … I think my parents were happy not to come to camp as well.” At the camp she sent her kids to, though, visiting day was part of every summer. Her advice? “While we really miss our kids, visiting day is about their needs and not ours.” To start visiting day on the right foot, Jennifer Topiel of Chappaqua, N.Y., plans a meeting spot in advance with her daughter, Sydney, 10, who’s heading to her third camp summer. And she lets Sydney be the tour CONTINUED ON PAGE S8

guide: “We trek around camp to see her in action at all of her favorite activities.” That’s exactly what Island Lake Camp recommends. “Let your child do the talking and tell you all about their experience,” Stoltz said. “Let them introduce you to their counselors and their activities.”

Visiting days
Avoid talking about home If your camper asks how things are at home, “don’t bite” and don’t let visiting siblings “needle the camper about missing out. As soon as you can, turn the conversation back to your camper,” advised Matthew Smith, director at Longacre Camp, a leadership camp for teens in Newport, Pa. Alternatively, don’t say “you are missing the child so much that you wish camp was already over and that he was home,” said
Dr. Carole Lieberman, a Beverly Hills, Calif., psychiatrist and former camp counselor who also attended sleep-away camp and sent her daughter to one. And don’t “push negatives,” Rubenstein added. “Some parents are like, ‘What’s wrong? What’s not going well?’ They push
until the kid says something.”
Say goodbye wisely Visiting day is a great way for parents to “experience a piece of the magic that camp offers,” said Elijah Geller, associate director of Camp Manitou in Ontario, Canada. But it’s also
stressful, reigniting for some kids “the anxiety of separating from home.” To help your child transition back to the camp community when the day is over, “say goodbye quickly, make sure your child’s counselor is there and ready to restart the fun of camp,
e for thhe k o o L e to t Guid Arts every Livelyursday in ss Th end Pa Week
and tell your child you know they will have a great end to camp,” said Adam Weinstein, executive director of Berkshire Hills Eisenberg Camp in Copake, N.Y. Camps will turn any lingering sadness around by having counselors “swoop in” as soon as parents leave to immerse campers back into upbeat, engaging activities.
If visiting day is so hard, why do it? “Doing away with it would make life easier on us, and on the boys and parents for whom it is a trial,” said Dottie Reed, head administrator of Camp Pemigewassett in Wentworth, N.H. On the other hand, “learning how to cope with life’s inevitable sadnesses is a powerful outcome of the camp experience, and what better place to practice these crucial skills than when surrounded by a community that is ready to [offer] support?” BETH J. HARPAZ (AP)

For these theater kids, all the camp’s a stage “[Traditional camp activities] are not only a ton of fun but also go hand in hand with developing skills that enhance improv.”
Two decades before Dan Futterman, Bennett Miller and Philip Seymour Hoffman joined up for “Capote,” they collaborated on a different project — a summer theater program. Back then, they were just high school students looking to spend their break the way thousands of teenagers still do: having fun while indulging their passion for acting. The options for summer theater camps today are as numerous as Shakespeare’s soliloquies. Some programs require auditions, others don’t. Some focus exclusively on theater, while others incorporate a more traditional camp experience. Some

Julia Duffy, a 17-year-old senior in Fort Collins, Colo., has attended two very different camps, one on the campus of a boarding school in New England, the other at New York University in Manhattan. Both required an audition, which she liked because she wanted a rigorous program. “I wanted to learn and I wanted to train,” she said. At the other end of the spectrum are programs like the High School Improv Camp offered by Fox Mountain Adventures in the mountains outside San Diego. Campers take part in daily improvisational workshops taught by performers from the National Comedy Theater. They
also swim, play color wars and sing campfire songs. Director Michael Baum said he includes those traditional activities because they involve leadership, teamwork and communication. “They are not only a ton of fun but also go hand in hand with developing skills that enhance improv,” he said. Here are a few other things to keep in mind if your camper has stage dreams: Plan ahead. Some programs fill up quickly: Stagedoor Manor, for instance — a three-week, non-audition camp for ages 8 to 17 in the Catskill Mountains of New York — was full by January. Consider your child’s personality and interests. Does he need to be
center stage? Does she prefer technical theater? Don’t despair if you haven’t studied theater and an audition is required. “It is incumbent on summer programs like Perry-Mansfield to identify those young people who may not have had that training, but who have all that potential to succeed,” said Nancy Engelken, executive director of the 103-year-old Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts School and Camp in Steamboat Springs, Colo. If the camp is on a college campus, find out if it’s run by the school or by an outside group. Ask about oversight and what activities are available when campers aren’t in class, Deckelbaum advised. PERRY-MANSFIELD (VIA AP)

The lost art of the letter could help campers with separation anxiety Putting pen to paper in this easy age of email, texting and phones means that parents, as well as their little campers, are flexing dormant muscles when they attempt to communicate. But counselors insist it’s worth fighting through writer’s block. “Our campers live and die to get letters from home,” said Hugh Haller, chief executive of the Camping and Education Foundation, which owns two wilderness-focused summer camps in northern Minnesota. “But we always try to tell parents
that when they do write letters to be very encouraging and supportive of what kids are doing, and not talk about home.” Keep the gushing about fabulous trips and outings without kids to a minimum, camp directors and consultants agreed, and think hard about when and how to share bad news from the home front, such as a death in the family. Kanakuk Kamps in Branson, Mo., has hosted more than 300,000 campers, from every state and several countries, since 1926. As at many camps, personal technology is not allowed, so letters are the only way parents communicate with kids, said Collin Sparks, the Christian
THINKSTOCK/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION
What to write home about camp’s executive director of ministries. He recommended asking questions about camp rather than talking about home life. Try not to create homesickness where there is none, or where there might be just a tinge of it. “Parents’ words play an integral part in homesickness, a big concern for first-time camp moms and dads,” he said.
Rather than even hint that life is oh-so-much fun without them, parents should keep campers of all ages up to date on things their kids love, Sparks suggested. Send them a sports score on their favorite team, or encourage them to talk about how they tackled a new sport or activity. Denise Wilson of Brooklyn has two kids, a 12-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son. Both are
seasoned campers. “My daughter has told us she does not like hearing about the good times she might be missing,” Wilson said. “We generally focus on telling funny anecdotes about our day, news about her brother, the dogs. Something that makes her laugh but nothing that she would want to have taken part in.” Another potential pitfall: Don’t overreact to news in campers’ letters that might seem worse than it is. Dottie Reed, head administrator of Camp Pemigewassett, a boys’ camp in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, recalled a first-time, 11-year-old camper who wrote home to his parents: “I don’t want you to lie, but can you just call camp and tell them someone died and you need to come get me?” The parents didn’t, she said. The boy ended up working through his homesickness and attending the camp for four more years. LEANNE ITALIE (AP)

HEALTHY APP-ETITE
The benefits of matcha are many: It’s good for your health and looks great in latte form on Instagram.
Meet your matcha
Looking for a different kind of caffeine kick? Try these green tea lattes around D.C.
TEA Whenever customers at Maketto (1351 H St. NE) order “that pretty drink everybody takes a picture of,” manager Sitha Ngan knows what they mean: the bright-green matcha latte that he says is the cafe’s most Instagrammed beverage. “I see people instantly take a picture of it,” he says. “And then most of them are converted to matcha after they take a sip.” Zen Buddhists might tell you that matcha is a powdered green tea whisked with hot water that they’ve been drinking for nearly a thousand years. But blended with steamed milk in creamy latte form, matcha is becoming a more popular option for D.C.’s health-conscious caffeine addicts. It’s so rich in musclebuilding amino acids, antioxidants, fiber and smooth, sustained caffeine (about as much as in a cup of green tea) that Manelle Martino, co-founder

of Capital Teas, calls it the “allnatural Prozac.” “Matcha is overall just a wonderful tea, right?” she says. “It’s a mood enhancer, it gives you energy … and it tastes really good.” Cafe and spice shop Souk in Capitol Hill (705 Eighth St. SE) has been serving matcha — in baked goods as well as lattes — since it opened last year. Winnette McIntosh Ambrose, owner of Souk and its sister shop, The Sweet Lobby, gets her matcha from the same California company (she’s keeping it a secret) that has supplied her personal matcha fix for years, ever since she got hooked on the superfood while working in Japan as a researcher. “It’s more floral, less harsh and astringent” than coffee, she says. “The boost that you get from matcha is a bit more sustained than the jitteriness you get from coffee. It’s more of a slow release.”
Wonders of matcha All of matcha’s health benefits come not so much from the tea leaves themselves, but from the special way they’re grown. In Japanese matcha fields, green tea plants are covered with black netting. That stops photosynthesis (ask a middle schooler about it) and keeps more of the chlorophyll inside, meaning a greener, sweeter tea. Once the leaves are picked from the plants, they’re ground into a fine powder, which means that when you drink a matcha latte, you’re consuming antioxidant-rich leaves. L.M.
Most matcha lattes start the same way: with a bit of hot water poured over about a teaspoon and a half of matcha powder, then whisked together to create a green foam on top. Then the barista pours over steamed milk, just like a regular latte. Souk keeps its matchas pretty

traditional, which means letting the tea’s subtle earthiness stand without any sweetener. Other D.C. spots are experimenting: At The Royal in Shaw (501 Florida Ave. NW), for instance, matcha lattes get sweetened with a touch of simple syrup, or even lavender syrup, if you ask for it. Ngan likes his Maketto matcha with a bit of sweetened condensed milk, which makes the drink even creamier. At A Baked Joint (440 K St. NW) in Mount Vernon Triangle, baristas recommend taking it with soy milk, which brings out the natural sweetness of the matcha powder. (Sister shop Baked & Wired will start serving matcha lattes that way within the next couple of weeks.) No matter how you take your matcha, D.C.’s experts agree that the jade green color is just begging for some latte art. The matcha latte has to be ready for its Instagram close-up, after all. Judge: Porsche is not at fault for Walker crash The widow of a man driving the Porsche that crashed and killed actor Paul Walker cannot prove the carmaker is responsible for the accident, a federal judge said. There was not enough evidence in Kristine Rodas’ claims that her husband died because the Porsche Carrera GT he was driving lacked several key safety features, U.S. District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez ruled Monday. He said there was no evidence the Porsche’s suspension failed before the crash, as Rodas’ lawsuit claimed. She also had alleged the rare sports car lacked a crash cage and fuel cell. (AP)

James Hannaham wins PEN/Faulkner Award James Hannaham has won the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction for “Delicious Foods,” his bravura novel about racism and labor abuse. The $15,000 prize was announced Tuesday by the PEN/Faulkner Foundation in Washington. “Delicious Foods” tells the story of an African-American boy who, despite losing his hands, tries to rescue his mother from a produce farm where she’s kept in virtual slavery. One of the country’s top literary prizes, the award was established in 1981. Previous winners include Ann Patchett, Philip Roth and Sherman Alexie. (AP/TWP)
The Oscar-winning composer finds it hard to keep scores ‘fresh’ FILMS If there is such a thing as superhero-film fatigue, then it seems to have claimed its first victim. Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer announced in recent days that he’s closing the book on scoring comic-book movies. This comes as a stunning announcement from the man who created the music for such DC Comics films as Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy and the new “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” and who has worked on
the soundscapes of Iron Man and Spider-Man. Zimmer said that after a dozen years working in “the superhero business,” he finds it difficult to “stay fresh.” Zimmer, who also scored Nolan’s “Inception” and “Interstellar,” created a new sound for Batman during Nolan’s trilogy — music every bit as recognizable as Danny Elfman’s 1989 “Batman” score. He also reached the same sonic heights for Superman in “Man of Steel.” John Williams’ ’70s “Superman” score is iconic, yet Zimmer managed to create something powerfully unique for his Son of Krypton, too. “Batman v Superman,” however, will likely now stand as

Zimmer gives up superhero films
German composer Hans Zimmer is a 10-time Oscar nominee but has never won for a superhero movie.
Zimmer’s swan song. Perhaps having to create yet another sound for Batman might have led him to realize it was time to
walk away. Imagine trying to create fresh magic for the same character over and over and over again. The fatigue showed in “Batman v Superman’s” score. No one expected Zimmer to score DC’s forthcoming “Suicide Squad,” but his announcement puts to rest any hopes that he would score next year’s Wonder Woman movie or other Justice League member film projects. Zimmer could have been the one constant that DC could rely upon to ensure continuity. Instead, Warner Bros. and DC will have to find at least one other composer to guide their screen titans.
