Barbara and Douglas Fink are surely the luckiest couple in Edmonton, Alberta: They won a Canadian lottery on Tuesday for the third time. Douglas shared a $128,000 prize with four friends in 1989, and the couple won a $100,000 payoff in 2010. But this time they hit the jackpot with a prize of $8.16 million, UPI reported. They don’t have grandiose plans for the windfall. Said Barbara: “Family comes first.” (EXPRESS)
Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officials, alerted by campus police last weekend, issued warnings to three Florida Gulf Coast University students who took a dead alligator to a dorm room and posted pictures of it on social media. The officials found the students were truthful when they said the reptile had been roadkill, but gave them warnings for possession of an alligator without proper permits. (AP)

John Glenn gets final farewell at Arlington ARLINGTON The flag-draped casket of John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, was covered in plastic to protect it from a steady rain as it was carried on a horse-drawn caisson to his final resting place at Arlington National Cemetery. Later, his widow, Annie, gave a kiss on the cheek to the Marine who presented her with the folded-up flag. Glenn, who died Dec. 8 at age 95, was laid to rest Thursday in a private burial at Arlington attended by relatives and invited guests. His family scheduled the service for what would have been John and Annie Glenn’s 74th wedding anniversary. The former fighter pilot, history-making astronaut and longtime U.S. senator from Ohio had already been remembered in his home state, where thousands of mourners visited his casket as it lay in repose at the statehouse for

a longer period than President Abraham Lincoln. Those close to the family said they felt a sense of duty in allowing the public to mark Glenn’s passing with the Ohio events, but Thursday’s burial service was intended as a more personal mourning. It was closed to the public and the news media, although the military made a portion of it available for viewing via livestream. Six Marine pallbearers in dress uniforms carried Glenn’s casket
to the gravesite. A military trumpeter played “Taps,” Marines fired three ceremonial rounds from their rifles and mourners recited Psalm 23. No one from the family made any remarks during the portion of the service that was livestreamed. Glenn’s pioneering Mercury flight in 1962 made him an instant national hero. He became the oldest man in space when he returned aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 1998 at age 77.

Feds push back against Baltimore police reform BALTIMORE The Trump Justice Department expressed “grave concerns” Thursday about an agreement the Obama administration reached with the city of Baltimore to overhaul its police department in the wake of the racially explosive Freddie Gray case. A gover n ment at tor ney weighed in on the proposed consent decree at a public hearing as about 50 Baltimore residents lined up to endorse the reforms and complain of deep-seated racism, abuse and deadly force by the police.
“The consent decree needs to be passed for us to feel we can call on the Baltimore Police Department without them making us into the criminals when we are the victims,” said black high school student Shane-jah McCaffity. But Justice Department lawyer John Gore said Attorney General Jeff Sessions is worried about whether the agreement “will achieve the goals of public safety and law enforcement while at the same time protecting civil rights.” Gore said there has been a spike in crime in Baltimore and the administration wants to make

sure the agreement “will help rather than hinder public safety.” The stand represents the start of what appears to be a retreat by the Trump administration from the federal consent decrees that have been put in place in several U.S. cities in recent years to root out racism, excessive force and other abuses against minorities. The plan discourages officers from writing up minor offenses such as loitering and bars them from arresting people simply because they are in high-crime areas. It also calls for more training. Hundreds of Fairfax Connector drivers and mechanics have threatened to walk off the job as early as Monday, potentially disrupting thousands of commutes in Northern Virginia. Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1764, which represents about 600 workers in the Fairfax County bus system, said a job action, up to and including strike, is likely if the union doesn’t reach an agreement with MV Transportation, the contractor that runs the system. Workers authorized such action in February after labor negotiations over wages, bathroom breaks and a pension plan stalled. Fairfax County, which funds the 86-route system, says it’s urging both sides to resolve the remaining issues so that an agreement is sent to the union members for a vote this weekend. (TWP)

White House weighing military action in Syria Both Trump, Tillerson suggest Assad may have to leave power SYRIA President Trump hinted at possible military action against Syria on Thursday as his administration considered how to strike at President Bashar Assad after this week’s chemical weapons attack that killed more than 80. Trump suggested strongly that Assad may have to leave power, and his comments were underscored by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who said, “It would seem there would be no role for him to govern the Syrian people.” The administration has been put to the test this week amid an international outcry over newly horrifying violence in Syria. The Pentagon is in the process of presenting options to the White House on potential

military responses, which could include strikes on Syrian military targets and actions designed to ground the Syrian air force. One of the most likely options is to launch Tomahawk missiles from Navy ships in the Mediterranean Sea. Trump’s tone has grown more grave with the passing days. — not just the “red line” of chemical weapons use that former President Barack Obama once set as an ultimatum for Assad. “I think what happened in Syria is a disgrace to humanity,” Trump said Thursday. Asked if Assad should remain in power, he said that “he’s there and I guess he’s running things so something should happen.” Tillerson said the U.S. is evaluating an appropriate response. “The process by which Assad would leave is something that will require an international community effort,” Tillerson said, adding that there needs to be a balance between defeating the Islamic State group and stabilizing Syria to prevent the civil war from escalating further. Tillerson also issued a warning to Russia that its support of the Assad government is something that it should “consider carefully.” (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)
Indian police are reviewing reports of missing children to try to identify a girl who was found living in a forest with a group of monkeys. The girl, believed to be 10 to 12 years old, was unable to speak, was wearing no clothes and was emaciated when she was discovered in January and taken to a hospital in Bahraich, a town in Uttar Pradesh state in northern India. She behaved like an animal, running on her arms and legs and eating food off the floor with her mouth, said D.K. Singh, chief medical superintendent. After treatment, she has begun walking normally and eating with her hands, but has not been able to speak. During her rescue, monkeys tried to attack and chase staff away. (AP)

Trouble at the mall
Wrenching changes in shopping trends have left the U.S. with too much retail square footage.
Big-name store closures mount as shoppers turn to online giants, niche merchants BUSINESS A fresh round of distress signals sounded in the retail industry this week, as another big-name chain announced hundreds of new store closings and still others moved aggressively to recalibrate their businesses for the online shopping stampede. Payless ShoeSource filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and outlined plans to immediately close nearly 400 of its 4,400 stores globally. Ralph Lauren is shuttering its flagship Polo store, a foot-traffic magnet on tony Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Big-box office supplies stalwart Staples is reportedly considering putting itself up for sale. The shakeout among retailers has been building for years and is now arriving in full force. The retrenchment comes as shoppers move online and begin to embrace smaller, niche merchants. As a result, many major chains find themselves victims of a problem of their own making, having elbowed their way into
so many locations that the U.S. has more retail square footage per capita than any other nation. Many have begun cutting back, sending ripples through the economy. The wave of store closures by Macy’s and Sears alone will empty 28 million square feet of retail real estate, according to an analysis by research firm CoStar. As big retail closes stores, it has cost many Americans their jobs. So far in 2017, retailers have announced plans to slash more than 38,000 positions, according to data from job placement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. And yet some of those losses have probably been offset by new jobs at start-up retailers and e-commerce operations. Amazon.com, for example, said this year it expects to create 100,000 full-time roles over 18 months. Some retailers are looking into ways to branch out: Ralph Lauren, for example, said it is exploring new opportunities for its Ralph’s Coffee concept. Another chain, J.C. Penney,
Chain reaction BEBE: The women’s clothing chain said in a regulatory filing Wednesday that it is closing 21 locations. LULULEMON: Last week, the yoga clothier’s chief executive Laurent Potdevin acknowledged that the chain had seen “a slow start to 2017.” HUDSON’S BAY: The parent company of Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor announced in January a $75 million annual cost-cutting effort. THE LIMITED: The women’s apparel chain said in January it was closing all of its 250 stores nationwide. (TWP)
looks to be trying to position itself to take advantage of fallout from the turmoil: The retailer has started carrying large appliances again, a potentially shrewd move that could fill a void in the marketplace as Sears and HHGregg close stores. It doesn’t help any of these legacy bricks-and-mortar companies that customers are increasingly

seeking out under-the-radar labels with a more specialized, boutique feel. The likes of Bonobos, Warby Parker, Shinola and Marine Layer are picking off shoppers that might once have filled their closets with goods from more ubiquitous chains. Meanwhile, as worries mount for bricks-and-mortar players, Amazon’s stock hit an all-time high Wednesday. (Amazon CEO Jeffrey Bezos owns Express.) According to research from Slice Intelligence, Amazon captured 38 percent of all dollars spent online during the holiday season. The next-closest retailer, Best Buy, had a mere 3.9 percent. All of this change is pushing traditional retailers to rethink what their stores should look like. Office Depot is converting some stores to a smaller footprint of just 15,000 square feet, and Target is testing a new store prototype with a separate entrance for shoppers looking to retrieve a “buy online, pick up in store” order. Report: 1 in 5 has HPV that causes cancer During a recent two-year period, almost 23 percent of U.S. adults ages 18 to 59 had a type of genital human papillomavirus (HPV) that put them at high risk of certain cancers, a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report published Thursday found. That percentage jumped to more than 42 percent in 20132014 if any type of genital HPV were included, the CDC found. In both groups, prevalence was higher in men than in women, and it was sharply higher among blacks compared with other racial and ethnic groups. “We tend to overlook the fact that 20 percent of us are carrying the virus that can cause cancer,” said Geraldine McQuillan, lead author of the report. This is the first data CDC has compiled on HPV rates among men. Previous research among teen girls and women looked at fewer strains of the virus and included a younger, narrower age range. HPV is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States. The CDC estimates that about 14 million new infections occur annually. Most of these go away on their own, but some HPV strains can lead to genital warts and cancer. Each year, 31,000 men and women are diagnosed with cancers caused by HPV — which, in most cases, would have been preventable with the HPV vaccine. JIA NAQVI

Senate GOP goes ‘nuclear,’ paving way for Gorsuch
verbatim
POLITICS Republicans invoked the “nuclear option” in the Senate on Thursday, unilaterally rewriting the chamber’s rules to allow President Trump’s nominee to ascend to the Supreme Court. Furious Democrats objected until the end, but their efforts to block Judge Neil Gorsuch failed as expected. A final confirmation vote is expected Friday, with Gorsuch needing only a simple-majority vote to be confirmed. Lawmakers of both parties bemoaned the long-term implications of the rule change. “We will sadly point to today as a turning point in the history of the Senate and the Supreme Court,” said Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York. The maneuvering played out in an atmosphere of tension in the Senate chamber. First, Democrats mounted a filibuster in an effort to block Gorsuch by denying him the 60 votes needed to advance to a final vote. Then Republican Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky raised a point of order, suggesting that Supreme Court nominees should not be subjected to a 60-vote threshold but instead a simple majority in the 100-member Senate.

Presidential nominees now can be confirmed by simple majority vote
Judge Neil Gorsuch is expected to be confirmed by a Senate vote Friday.
McConnell was overruled, but appealed the ruling. And on that he prevailed on a 52-48 party line vote. The 60-vote filibuster requirement on Supreme Court nominees was effectively gone, and with it the last vestige of bipartisanship in an increasingly polarized Senate. The approval of the “nuclear option” means all presidential nominees for executive branch positions and federal courts need only a simple-majority vote to be confirmed by senators. Gorsuch counts 55 supporters in the Senate: the 52 Republicans, along with three moderate Democrats in states Trump won in November and are up for re-election. “This will be the first, and last, partisan filibuster of a Supreme Court nominee,” McConnell
vowed Thursday before the vote on Gorsuch, 49, a 10-year veteran of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver with a consistently conservative record. Supreme Court filibusters have been nearly unheard of in the Senate, but liberal Democrats are furious over the Trump presidency, and Republicans are desperate to get a win after months of chaos. Democrats also remain angry about McConnell’s decision last year to deny consideration to then-President Barack Obama’s high court nominee, Judge Merrick Garland, who was ignored by Senate Republicans after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. “We believe that what Republicans did to Merrick Garland was worse than a filibuster,” Schumer said. “It shouldn’t be in America that you can sexually harass women and then buy your way out of it because you’re rich. … Bill O’Reilly needs to go to jail.” REP. MAXINE WATERS, D-CALIF,
speaking out after President Trump defended Fox News host Bill O’Reilly. The New York Times reveled that five women collectively received $13 million in settlements after accusing O’Reilly of sexual harassment or other inappropriate conduct.
ON THE WAY OUT?
Reports: Bannon threatened to quit
The New York Times, citing unnamed “White House officials,” reported Thursday that President Trump’s chief strategist, Stephen Bannon, has become “increasingly embattled” and “has been conspicuously absent from some meetings.” Multiple news outlets reported that Bannon, who was removed from the National Security Council on Wednesday, has grown so frustrated by his marginalization that he recently threatened to quit. Nunes recuses himself from Russia probe House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., temporarily recused himself Thursday from all matters related to the committee’s ongoing probe into Russian interference in the presidential election, as House investigators look into ethics charges against him. The House Ethics Committee released a statement Thursday saying it had “determined to investigate” allegations that “Nunes may have made unauthorized disclosures of classified information, in violation of House Rules, law, regulations, or other standards of conduct.” Nunes denied the charges as “entirely false and politically motivated,” blaming “several leftwing activist groups” for filing complaints with the Office of Congressional Ethics. House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said Thursday that he does not think Nunes did anything wrong, but “fully support[s] his decision.” Nunes recently came under fire for going to the White House grounds to meet with a secret source and view documents he said suggest that the identities of President Trump and his transition team may have been improperly revealed in surveillance reports. Democrats have accused Nunes of coordinating with the White House about those reports, and suggested that in talking about them publicly, he might have released classified information. Alex Ovechkin, left, and Matt Niskanen savor locking up the No. 1 overall seed in the playoffs.
THREE POINTERS
TONI L. SANDYS (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Redskins’ mock picks
Making a bit of history Another Presidents’ Trophy gives Caps a distinction in D.C., but real job is ahead CAPITALS The Capitals clinched the NHL’s Presidents’ Trophy, awarded to the team that finishes with the most points during the regular season, for a second consecutive year and the third time in franchise history with a 2-0 home victory Wednesday over the Rangers. Yes, it’s only the regular season. But consider: The Capitals (54-18-8, 116 points) became the first D.C. team among the four major professional leagues to
finish with the best record in its sport in consecutive full seasons. Others have come close. The Redskins tied for the NFL’s best record in the strikeshortened 1982 season at 8-1 and finished an NFL-best 14-2 the following year. The Senators won the American League pennant in 1924 and 1925, but the National League’s New York Giants were one game better during the ’24 regular season. By clinching the No. 1 seed,
the Capitals will have home ice throughout the playoffs. They will face the East’s second wild-card team — likely Ottawa, Boston or Toronto — in the first round, and avoid an opening series with Pittsburgh or Columbus. And with nothing further to accomplish in the regular season, the Capitals have the opportunity to rest some players with two regular-season games remaining — Saturday at Boston and the home finale Sunday night against Florida. Defenseman John Carlson has missed the past two games with an undisclosed lower-body injury that isn’t considered serious, but he now has the luxury of time. And coach Barry Trotz said other players with bumps and bruises might also get a break. What else does winning the Presidents’ Trophy mean? Perhaps not so much. Only two of the past 13 teams to win the Presidents’ Trophy
(and eight of 30 overall) have gone on to win the Stanley Cup. The 2009-10 Capitals were one of four Presidents’ Trophy winners in the past 11 years to lose in the conference quarterfinals. But there is a more uplifting historical trend to consider. Three of the five other teams to win the Presidents’ Trophy in back-to-back seasons (1986-87 Edmonton, 1988-89 Calgary and 1998-99 Dallas) capped the second season of their two-year runs of regular-season dominance by winning the Stanley Cup. Here is the bottom line for the Capitals: This is the third time they have won the Presidents’ Trophy since 2010, but they have yet to reach the conference finals in that span. Superstar Alex Ovechkin tried to put the accomplishment in perspective. “It means we’re best team in the season,” he said. “But the most important season is coming soon.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)
With the NFL draft (April 27-29) less than three weeks away, it’s officially mock draft season. Here is a look at a few projections for the Redskins’ first selection (17th overall). DAVE TEPPS (EXPRESS)
3 LB Haason Reddick The Washington Post writes that the Temple product can play inside on early downs and then rush from the outside, a chess piece new D-coordinator Greg Manusky would love.
2 Safety Jabrill Peppers USA Today writes that at Michigan he showed he can defend the slot and play linebacker in sub packages — ideal for the Redskins, who were 25th against the pass.
1 RB Dalvin Cook SI.com concedes he might be a reach at No. 17, but says he would give the Redskins rare star quality in the backfield. He scored 48 TDs in three seasons at Florida State.

which is seeking a new voice. Chenier, 66, played guard for the franchise for nine seasons (1971-80).

Dustin Johnson, the world’s top-ranked golfer, withdraws from the Masters right before his tee time Thursday.
Bizarre back injury ends Dustin Johnson’s week A slip and fall on stairs Wednesday forces him to quit at last minute AUGUSTA, GA. Dustin Johnson made it to the practice area at Augusta National on Thursday afternoon. He strode to the putting green that sits just behind the first tee. But he couldn’t tee off. Johnson, the world’s top-ranked player, withdrew moments before his 2:03 p.m. tee time — the last group of the first round — because he could not overcome pain caused by what he and his agent described as a freak accident at his rental home, a sock-footed slip on hardwood floors that sent him tumbling down three stairs,
injuring his lower back Wednesday afternoon. “I just don’t feel like there’s any chance that I’ll be able to compete,” he said Thursday. With that, the Masters was deprived of one of its biggest stars before the first day was sorted out. Johnson not only is the No. 1 player in the official world rankings, but he achieved that status with a scorching stretch before arriving at Augusta: three wins in his last three starts, including most recently at the Match Play Championship. But his week was undone by the slip. He landed on the left part of his lower back — in addition to bruising his left elbow — making it impossible for him to fully swing a golf club.
“It hurts,” Johnson said shortly after walking off the first tee Thursday. “I was doing everything I could to try to play. Last night, ice, heat, ice. I was up pretty much all night, trying to get it ready for today.” With one of the event’s big names out, a low-profile competitor, Charley Hoffman, carded a 7-under 65 to take a four-stroke lead. Hoffman, 40, has four victories on the PGA Tour. For the second straight round at the Masters, Jordan Spieth had a quadruple bogey on the back nine. Spieth, who last year lost a five-stroke lead on Sunday, went into the water on the par-5 15th on Thursday and had a 9. He wound up with a 75 total.
“I may have had to fight Arnold’s gallery, but I never had to fight him. He was very kind to a young guy starting out. I appreciated it very much.” JACK NICKLAUS, 77, speaking to The Palm Beach Post at the Masters this week about his friendship for six decades with Arnold Palmer, who died in September. Palmer was honored Thursday at the first tee before the start of the tournament.

DILEMMA FOR REDSKINS FAN
Earnhardt’s car will rock enemy colors
Die-hard Redskins fan and NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced this week that his No. 88 Chevrolet will feature a Philadelphia Eagles paint scheme for the Pocono 400 in Long Pond, Pa., on June 11. He said he didn’t lose a bet — it was a decision by sponsor Axalta and will benefit a teachers’ charity in Pennsylvania that the coating company helps. “I hope that my Redskins pals, the fandom that I’m part of … don’t disown me,” Earnhardt said. Strasburg will skip a day, leaving hole in rotation The Nationals’ rotation for the series in Philadelphia has a twist. Max Scherzer will start Friday as expected, but Stephen Strasburg will get an extra day of rest Saturday and pitch Sunday. Joe Ross would ordinarily be available, but the Nats — not expecting to need a fifth starter now — optioned him to Class AAA Syracuse last week and can’t recall him yet. One possibility is right-hander Jeremy Guthrie, 37, who looked good in spring training but didn’t make the roster. Gio Gonzalez started Thursday against Miami in a game delayed by rain. (TWP)

WORLD CUP
U.S., Canada and Mexico plan joint bid for 2026 CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani has told The Guardian that the U.S., Canada and Mexico are expected to submit a joint bid for the 2026 World Cup, a move that was anticipated after FIFA said this year that it would encourage bidders to partner up. The plan for shared tournaments stems in part from the fact that it has become increasingly untenable financially for one country to host big events such as the World Cup or Summer Olympics. The next two World Cups will be in Russia (2018) and Qatar (2022). (TWP)

ALSO OPENING
‘Smurfs: The Lost Village’ Mary (Mckenna Grace) is just your typical 6-year-old doing some casual calculus.
‘Gifted’ is just average The calculated plot in this Chris Evans-starring drama doesn’t equate to brilliance FILM REVIEW The tale of a rancorous battle for custody of a motherless 6-year-old mathematical prodigy, “Gifted” manages, for the most part, to rise above not just the “Kramer vs. Kramer” dynamic of a kindhearted man facing off against a coldly manipulative woman in the fight to control the destiny of an innocent child, but also the inevitable histrionics, both inside the courtroom and out. “Gifted” tells the story of Mary (Mckenna Grace), a little girl who has been raised and homeschooled by her uncle Frank (Chris Evans) after the death of her mother, Frank’s sister, a promising mathematician who killed herself when Mary was an
infant. When Frank decides that Mary needs to begin attending regular school, Mary’s maternal grandmother (Lindsay Duncan), shows up with designs to wrench the girl from the home she loves and place her in a school for the gifted. The situation is complicated by the fact that specialists, including Mary’s teacher, Bonnie (Jenny Slate), also believe that the child could benefit from education better tailored to her talents. From this point on, the action is pretty predictable, including a romantic entanglement between Frank and Bonnie, shocking underhandedness on the part of Grandma and some brassy sideline commentary on the fray, courtesy of Frank’s neighbor and Mary’s surrogate mom, played
‘Gifted’ (PG-13, 101 min.) DIRECTOR: Marc Webb STARS: Chris Evans, Mckenna Grace, Octavia Spencer, Jenny Slate IN A NUTSHELL: A man raising his deceased sister’s daughter, a child math prodigy, gets caught in a custody battle with his mother.
by Octavia Spencer. The screenplay by Thom Flynn sounds, at least, authentic, with references to the Navier-Stokes “Millennium Problem,” one of seven unsolved math conundrums that, if worked out, come with a $1 million prize. (It’s a real thing, and the film hinges on the fact that Mary’s mother
had been working on it at the time of her suicide.) Yes, there’s a third-act twist that both reveals and undermines more than one character’s motives, but the film sinks or swims based less on what the protagonists do than on whether we like them. As Frank, Evans has charisma to burn, and Grace is adorable, in an unforced way that steers clear of child-prodigy cliches. Their chemistry — as well as that of Evans and Slate, who recently ended an off-screen romance of several months — is offbeat and sweet. “Gifted” is a clever, if less than brilliant film. Its genius lies not in what’s on the page, but in its humanity. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
AWARDS
MTV puts movies and TV on a level playing field
The nominees for MTV’s first-ever Movie and TV Awards — airing May 7, hosted by Adam Devine — have switched up some awards show conventions. Films and series, as well as actors from both mediums, can compete in the same categories (like “Moonlight” and “This Is Us” for Best Tearjerker). Also, divided actress/ actor categories have been axed, with performers of both genders competing in “actor” categories. (EXPRESS)
“Friday Night Tykes” to move from Esquire to USA Network for second season
FOX
PG, 89 min.
“Smurfs: The Lost Village,” the third feature on the tiny blue forest creatures, follows Smurfette (Demi Lovato), who is created by the evil wizard Gargamel (Rainn Wilson), but is transformed into a force for good. The film has enough bright colors and humor to enchant its target audience — plus those adults who have managed to retain the requisite level of childlike wonder and innocence. PAT PADUA (TWP)
‘Going in Style’ PG-13, 96 min.
1979’s “Going in Style” — about three elderly men who pull a bank heist in an attempt to stave off the bitter edge of old age — is treated to a warmhearted upgrade that features Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Alan Arkin in roles they slip into like well-worn sweaters. These fine actors’ chemistry lifts the film from forgettable to genuinely enjoyable. ANN HORNADAY (TWP)
People’s Choice Awards to move from CBS to E!, an NBC-owned network, beginning in 2018

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
All together now: When one woman just isn’t enough “20th Century Women”
It took me a while to realize what was different. The past few weeks, my husband and I had been working through our DVR as usual: “Big Little Lies” on Mondays, “Feud” on Tuesdays, “Arrow” and “The Flash” later in the week. When alone, I’ve been bingeing on “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” on Netflix. Eventually it hit me: Every night of the week, without even trying, I was watching shows that have a lot of women in them. Movies? Not so much. Out of the films I’ve seen this year, five have had a female lead. What really bugs me, though, is that only one (“20th Century Women”) had a female ensemble. That’s problematic, because — just like men — women in the real world tend to exist in ensembles. That’s why we go to the bathroom in groups (rim shot!). The increase in female protagonists in movies is promising, but it’s not the ultimate goal of feminism; the end goal of feminism is a Black Widow movie. Actually, a Black Widow movie wouldn’t solve
the problem, either, because chances are Black Widow would leave the boys club of the Avengers and step into a story where she is the only woman whose name we can remember once the credits roll. A movie where the woman on the poster is the only one in the film isn’t a movie that reflects the lives of most women. Movies lag behind TV in terms of trusting that stories with multiple women at the core will bring in audiences and their money. Watch — people will point to June’s “Wonder Woman” as a great success for female representation in movies, but if the bacheloretteparty-centric “Rough Night” does well, people will be shocked that a movie about a group of women could dominate at the box office. The same level of shock people felt about “Bridesmaids.” And “Pitch Perfect 2.” And “The Help.” “Hidden Figures” did so well last year because it showed women in relation to other women. While I don’t have the gender breakdown of who went to see it, you don’t rake in $150 million without some male butts in the seats, which

suggests that well-written female relationships are interesting and compelling because … they’re interesting and compelling. The problem of underrepresentation in movies won’t be solved by representing a false idea — namely, that most women
exist as solitary creatures, or perhaps alongside a kooky best friend. It’s great that women can see more of ourselves onscreen. Now it’s time we started seeing our friends, too. Read Kristen’s musings on movies each week in Express.

“Aw jeez. Rickles. Sweetest, funniest, legend and mensch. Came to a party at my house gave me a dollar and told me to get a nicer place. #RIP” CRAIG FERGUSON, one of many entertainers commemorating the death of the late legendary insult comic
Don Rickles by sharing his zingers on social media
TV producer/writer Shonda Rhimes joins Planned Parenthood’s national board
Don Rickles, launcher of comic insults 1926-2017 Don Rickles, the master of the comic insult whose humor was a fast-paced, high-volume litany of mockery, died Thursday at his Los Angeles home. The cause was kidney failure, his publicist said. He was 90. Trained as a dramatic actor, Rickles appeared in numerous films and TV series and was the voice of Mr. Potato Head in the popular animated “Toy Story” films. But for more than 50 years, he practiced a distinctive brand of improvisational, sarcastic humor that made him one of the most original and influential comedians of his time. Despite his many forays into acting — including his acclaimed performance in Martin Scorsese’s 1995 film “Casino” — Rickles was always at his best alone onstage. “Mr. Warmth,” as Johnny Carson dubbed him, did not tell jokes with traditional punchlines, did not make topical comments about the news and did not use crude profanity. Every show was spontaneous, built largely around his caustic observations about members of the audience. People vied for front-row seats at nightclubs, practically begging to be skewered by Rickles. “Many other comedians who practice insult humor are either way too broad or they hide behind a character,” Scorsese once told the New York Times, “but Rickles keeps this balance between levity and relentlessness.” MATT SCHUDEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The week’s best movie previews
‘I Am Heath Ledger’
‘The Book of Henry’
EXPECTED RELEASE: May 3
EXPECTED RELEASE: June 16
SUMMARY: Sometimes when someone dies young, we ascribe to them qualities they didn’t have — talent included. When Heath Ledger died in 2008 at age 28, that could have happened. The preview for this documentary, made partially from home movies, reminds us that he really did have what it takes to be a legend. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: Jacob Tremblay (the kid from “The Room,” who is growing up way too fast) stars with Naomi Watts. She’s a single mom; he’s a child genius who suspects something hinky is going on next door. The two set out to rescue their neighbor with an elaborate plan that, knowing most 11-year-olds, is probably based on Minecraft. K.P.K.

@IRE_NINJA, wading into the seemingly never-ending debate over what does and does not belong on pizza. New Zealand’s Prime Minister Bill English took the issue to a new level when he posted a photo on Facebook of a pizza he made for his family. The pizza featured meat, pineapple and “tinned” spaghetti (which means from a can).
“If having a conflict of interest is wanting to solve too many conflicts at the same time, then I have a conflict of interest.” @THEDAILYSHOW, sharing #Ivanktionary, a parody of Ivanka
Trump’s personal dictionary after she gave an odd definition of the word “complicit” in an interview with Gayle King on CBS News that aired Wednesday. Trump said that if being complicit is “wanting to be a force for good,” then she is complicit in her father’s administration. “The Daily Show” offered some other words Trump might have her own definitions for. For example, inept: “If being inept is lacking the burden of knowledge, then my father is inept.”
“@Topshop decided it would be ok to take a Palestinian keffiyeh — a very important cultural symbol — and make it a ‘scarf playsuit.’ NOPE.” @DENA, tweeting about the “festival-ready playsuit” that retailer Topshop was selling, which was called out for its resemblance to the Palestinian keffiyeh headscarf. The Evening Standard reported that Topshop is pulling the piece.
@CHARLIEBOTT1, using a derogatory
term for politically correct liberals to describe President Trump. The New York Times reported that Trump was not pleased that some people had taken to calling chief strategist Stephen Bannon “President Bannon,” and that may have contributed to Bannon’s ouster from a key role on the National Security Council.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Don’t shy away from the basics just because they are, indeed, basic. Everyone can benefit from reminding themselves of simple truths. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’re not about to be bullied. When the time comes, you’ll stand up against any foe, even one who is much more powerful than you. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Not everyone is going to see things through a clear and undistorted lens — and not everyone can — but you should be able to. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Your plans for prosperity may have to take a back seat to simpler worries of mere survival — though perhaps not in such dramatic terms. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) There is no need for you to back away from the stance that has gotten you where you are. You can be just as strong and confident as ever.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Sources told TMZ that the actor had been at the bowling alley, Pinz, for three hours drinking beer, and in a video published by the site, he calls a bartender who refused to serve him fries a “f---ing racist.” The site said LaBeouf left, but immediately returned when he realized he was still wearing bowling shoes. The Israeli Labor Party has postponed its election by one day to avoid a conflict with a Britney Spears concert in Tel Aviv. According to the Israeli publication Haaretz, via Vulture, security for Spears’ show on July 3 is expected to close down roads near the concert venue, which is opposite the convention center where votes are expected to be counted. Haaretz noted that security and ushers hired for Spears’ show would be unable to supervise the election. I do have someone who is very, very good at twerking, and she helped me. I never realized how flexible you have to be to do that stuff.” (EXPRESS)
