Authorities in Queensland, Australia, said aspiring rapper Terry Peck (aka 2pec) tried an unusual way to skip out on a $621 dinner tab (about U.S. $466). After gorging on two lobsters, a baby octopus, 17 oyster shooters and other goodies Sunday at a swank restaurant on the beach, Peck allegedly fled into the surf, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported. Police commandeered a jet ski to track him down. (EXPRESS)

The next village president in the Illinois community of Colp will be decided by a coin toss after the leading candidates tied. A dead heat isn’t so shocking considering that only 29 of 250 registered voters participated. Village clerk Tammy O’Daniell-Howell and Bryan Riekena, a self-described “geek,” each got 11 votes. The tie will be broken April 20 with a coin flip, as prescribed by Illinois law, the country clerk said. (AP)

Imagine the reaction of a German driver and his 14-year-old daughter after a farmer accidentally filled their convertible with a trailer of manure. The motorists were parked at roadside near Munich on Saturday when a tractor pulling a trailer of liquid manure swung their way. The turn sent the load pouring into the Renault convertible, covering the occupants from head to toe with slurry. Police said the car’s a wreck but “nobody was injured.” (AP)

Political activism gets a little egg-citing

Natalie Rebetsky designed eggs as an alternative to the ones at this year’s White House Easter Egg Roll.

the White House designed to commemorate the event. “I didn’t care who was president when I went on the White House lawn,” she said. Until now. “I just don’t feel that with this administration,” she said. “Donald Trump has broken that trust with families and children.” Then she had an idea. What if she made an alternative egg? So

began her life as the alt-egg lady. “It’s really hard for all of us to jump out of our armchairs and be activists,” she said. But she wanted to make a point. So she called the woodworkers in Maine who make the commemorative eggs, Wells Wood Turning & Finishing, and they agreed to make a batch of 1,000. She took a deep breath and put $5,000 down. In late February, she set up a gofundme.com asking people to send $15 for the eggs — $5 to cover the cost, $10 to donate to the arts. Her kitchen filled with 1,000 wooden eggs. Then the orders started rolling in. She and her sister now spend evenings at the kitchen table, packaging and addressing the little wooden eggs, which say, “Protect Our Children’s Future 2017,” with a cute sketch of dancing Easter bunnies. One idea, one kitchen table and more than $15,000 raised so far as of Monday. “I may be one person,” Rebetsky said, “but I hope that this campaign will help to deliver my message.” PETULA DVORAK (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT President Trump has helped raise a small army of newbie activists. Folks like English teacher Natalie Rebetsky, who never thought of herself as a political person or partisan activist. Until now. Before Trump, Rebetsky was known as the colorful chair of the English department of Linganore High School in Frederick, Md., whose only involvement with the White House was a mild obsession with the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, which drew 35,000 attendees last year. When her kids were little, she’d wake them up before dawn, get them in their Easter best and drive them to the White House. “And you get there, and it’s magical. We were always in awe, to be at the White House,” she said. Year after year they did it, and each year she loved adding whatever colorful, wooden egg

MARYLAND Democrats in the Maryland General Assembly spent much of the 2017 legislative session opposing President Trump’s agenda; taking progressive stances on education, health care and the environment; and trying to dent Republican Gov. Larry Hogan’s popularity ahead of the 2018 gubernatorial election. On Monday, the House and Senate spent the last day of the session squeezing in final votes and trying to negotiate agreements on controversial bills dealing with police treatment of undocumented immigrants and banning guns on college campuses. Talks on the latter two proposals showed few signs of progress by late in the day, suggesting the measures would not advance. But lawmakers passed bills to prevent price-gouging by drugmakers, limit hours of standardized testing in schools and roll back new transportation-funding rules. Lawmakers continued working late into the evening, with votes pending on legislation to address a growing opioid epidemic; resolve disputes over the state’s medical marijuana industry; protect internet privacy; and provide a tax break for manufacturers that move to the state or hire more workers within it. (The legislative session ended

after Express’ deadline.) Hogan described this year’s session as “incredibly bipartisan” but acknowledged that he and Democrats “had a few heated moments here and there on different topics.” Much of the heavy lifting for the Democratic agenda wrapped up before Monday, including passage of a bill requiring employers to provide paid sick leave. In the past several days, the legislature forwarded dozens of bills to the governor’s desk, including several progressive measures that change the way schools are rated for success and prohibit private companies from taking over failing public schools; ban hydraulic fracturing in Western Maryland; and require the state to reimburse Planned Parenthood clinics for their services if Congress cuts funding.

The General Assembly also authorized the attorney general to sue the Trump administration over policies dealing with health care, immigration and the environment, and formed commissions to study the impact of federal policies affecting health care and consumer protections. Last week, Hogan, opting against a veto-override showdown with the legislature, allowed almost all of the bills that were sent to his desk early to become law. “We’ve had a great session,” said Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. “We worked with the governor, sent him 27 bills; he vetoed one. We’ve had big bills on Planned Parenthood, on voting and health care. … We fully funded the budget; we fully funded education; we protected the environment.” OVETTA WIGGINS AND JOSH HICKS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The text came March 31 and Je’Nan Hayes didn’t know how to react. It was weeks after Hayes was sitting on the bench in Watkins Mill’s playoff game, wondering why she was the only player not to see the court. Now her coach sent her a screen shot of a letter from the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association: The rule that required a waiver for her hijab — and led a ref to bar her from playing in that game — had been changed. Players in Maryland no longer needed a state-approved waiver for religious garments. The letter now provides a blanket statewide waiver for “head covering, wrap, or other required religious garment” that is not dangerous or likely to come off during play. “I almost burst into tears because I was so happy,” said Hayes, a junior. Emergency personnel respond Monday to a shooting inside an elementary school in San Bernardino, Calif.

8-year-old, teacher die in classroom shooting Police: Man with violent history kills himself after shooting wife, 2 boys SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. A husband opened fire on his wife Monday in a San Bernardino elementary school classroom, killing her and a student in a murder-suicide that spread panic across a city still recovering from a terrorist attack at a community center 15 months ago. Police said the shooter killed himself and critically wounded a second student at North Park School. “The children we do not believe were targeted. The suspect had come to the classroom to visit,” police Capt. Ron Maass

told reporters. The gunman was identified as 53-year-old Cedric Anderson, of Riverside, who shot his wife, Elaine Smith, also 53. She was a teacher in the special-needs classroom for students in first through fourth grades. The gunman had a history of weapons, domestic violence and possible drug charges that predated the marriage, which lasted only a few months, authorities said. The boy who died was identified as Jonathan Martinez, 8. Authorities did not name the boy who was wounded. Anderson said nothing as he began firing a large-caliber revolver, according to police. Both of the children who were

hit were standing behind Smith. The student who was shot but survived was hospitalized in stable condition. The 600 other students at the school were bused to safety at California State University’s San Bernardino campus, several miles away. As word of the shooting spread, panicked parents raced to the school, some in tears, some praying as they anxiously sought information about their children. They were told to go to a nearby high school where they would be reunited with their children. San Bernardino, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles, was the site of a December 2015 terror attack that killed 14 people and wounded 22 others. CHRISTOPHER WEBER (AP)

‘What’s your current pay?’ Better not ask. It’s the interview question no applicant likes: How much do you make in your current job? The New York City Council isn’t fond of it, either. It voted last week to ban employers from asking job applicants their pay in their current or past job. It’s an idea that’s starting to spread. The Big Apple joined places such as Massachusetts, Puerto Rico and Philadelphia in outlawing the practice. The thinking behind the law is that when employers ask about an applicant’s salary history, they can end up perpetuating any discrimination that women or people of color may have faced in the past by basing an offer on previous compensation that was unfairly low. At Rose Garden event, he vows to be ‘faithful servant’ of Constitution COURTS President Trump praised new Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch during a White House swearingin ceremony Monday as a jurist who will rule “not on his personal preferences but based on a fair and objective reading of the law.” In the Rose Garden ceremony, Trump said Americans would see in Gorsuch “a man who is

deeply faithful to the Constitution of the United States” and predicted greatness for the 49-yearold former appeals court judge from Colorado. “I have no doubt you will go down as one of the truly great justices in the history of the U.S.,” Trump said. The president noted that the confirmation came during his first 100 days in office and added: “You think that’s easy?” Gorsuch, who restores the court’s conservative majority, was sworn in during the ceremony by Justice Anthony

Kennedy, for whom he once served as a law clerk. It was the second of two oaths — the first was conducted privately in the Justices’ Conference Room by

Chief Justice John Roberts. In remarks in the Rose Garden, Gorsuch said he was humbled by his ascent to the nation’s high court and thanked his former

law clerks, saying their “names are etched in my heart forever.” Gorsuch promised to be a “faithful servant of the Constitution and laws of this great nation.” He fills the nearly 14-monthlong vacancy created by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia, who anchored the court’s conservative wing for nearly three decades. He died unexpectedly in February 2016. In nominating Gorsuch, Trump said he fulfilled a campaign pledge to pick someone in the mold of Scalia. During 11 years on the federal appeals court in Denver, Gorsuch mirrored Scalia’s originalist approach to the law, interpreting the Constitution according to the meaning understood by those who drafted it. Study: Airline service is improving …

Airlines are getting better at sticking to their schedules and are losing fewer bags, according to a study released Monday. Researchers at Wichita State University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University found that in 2016, the rate of bags that were lost, stolen or delayed fell 17 percent, and 81.4 percent of flights arrived on time, up from 79.9 percent in 2015. In addition, passengers’ chances of being bumped dropped 18 percent. (AP)

nation+world BUSINESS Wells Fargo said Monday that two former senior executives, including its longtime CEO John Stumpf, must return an additional $75 million in compensation after a scathing internal report found the bad sales practices that have rocked the bank date back to at least 2002, far earlier than initially acknowledged. Stumpf, who stepped down in October, had already agreed to give up $41 million in compensation. Now, Wells Fargo says it will claw back an additional $28 million from Stumpf. The former

head of retail banking, Carrie Tolstedt, who stepped down last year and agreed to give up $19 million in compensation, will lose an additional $47 million in stock options. The report was the culmination of a six-month investigation by the bank’s independent board members. It indicates that the problems at Wells Fargo were deeper than believed. Wells Fargo admitted last year, for example, that it had fired 5,300 employees over five years for opening accounts that customers didn’t want or know

Wells Fargo acknowledged last year that some of its employees created as many as 2 million fake accounts to meet sales goals. In some cases, Wells Fargo customers faced various fees for accounts they did not request, or bank employees took money from an authorized account to create a fake one. face opposition from the communities they pass through because of concerns about noise, pollution and diminished property values. Rural communities face challenges, partly because they have fewer residents over whom to spread the cost of improvements. Grant County, Okla., for example, has more than 3,500 bridges with a population of about 4,500 and an economy based on agriculture and energy production. County commission chairwoman Cindy Bobbitt told U.S. senators at a recent hearing, “While this infrastructure was ideal 70 years ago for transporting livestock and crops, it is inadequate to support today’s heavier trucks, increased traffic and higher operating needs.”

EGYPT Egypt imposed a three-month nationwide state of emergency Monday as President AbdelFattah el-Sissi sought to ease anger and take a tougher stand against Islamic extremists after suicide bombings at two Coptic Christian churches killed 45. A day after the Palm Sunday bloodshed, the Interior Ministry said it had killed seven Islamic State militants in an exchange of gunfire during a security operation in the southern city of Assiut. The ministry alleged they were plotting attacks against Christians. Coptic Christians have put their faith in el-Sissi, who has championed himself as a bulwark against Islamists. The latest ISIS attacks were a blow to el-Sissi’s image and left many Christians doubting whether he is capable of protecting them. ISIS is stepping up its attacks against Christians, who make up 10 percent of the population, by moving its activities from the Sinai to other parts of Egypt. Its increasingly sophisticated tactics are likely to fuel sectarian tensions and embarrass el-Sissi. El-Sissi imposed a state of emergency, declared three days of mourning and deployed special forces to help police secure churches after the attacks. But a limited state of emergency and a nightly curfew already in place in the Sinai Peninsula since 2014 has failed to halt near-daily attacks.

Atlanta commuters will have to use detours for the foreseeable future after a fire collapsed an overpass on I-85.

TRANSPORTATION When a train jumped the tracks last week at New York’s Penn Station, the seemingly minor accident led to a cascade of exasperating delays for hundreds of thousands of commuters. When a flood forced authorities to condemn a one-lane, century-old bridge in rural Ozark, Mo., it was no less frustrating for the residents cut off from their shortest route into town. The two episodes highlight a reality about the U.S. transportation system: It is aging, congested and so vital that when things go wrong, big and costly disruptions can result for which there is no quick fix. Though President Trump has promised a $1 trillion infrastructure-rebuilding program, not all of that may go toward transportation. Even then, it would fall well short of the many trillions needed to fix the country’s web of roads, bridges, railways, subways and bus stations. The commuter train in New York derailed because of a weakened railroad tie. No one was seriously injured. But the incident shut down eight of the station’s 21 tracks, disrupting Amtrak service in the Northeast from Boston to Washington, and delaying commuter trains in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut for the better part of a week. The Penn Station derailment happened just days after motorists in Atlanta were forced to begin taking long, bumper-tobumper detours because a fire collapsed an Interstate 85 overpass linking the city to some of its biggest suburbs. suspected there. It could take until mid-June to repair the highway. Improving the nation’s roads and bridges would require $120 billion a year through 2020, according to a recent U.S. Department of Transportation estimate. But annual spending at all levels of government is just $88 billion. And the nation’s mass transit systems have a backlog of maintenance and repair needs whose cost exceeds $90 billion. The capacity of the nation’s transportation system is lagging behind population growth, leading to ever-greater congestion. By 2040, nearly 30,000 miles of the busiest highways are expected to be clogged every day. Complexities of government can sometimes slow down

NHL PLAYOFFS PREVIEW

Stanley Cup hopefuls

When media members vote for all-NBA teams this week, they’ll determine whether forward Paul George can make an extra $75 million or so. That’s due to the Designated Player Exception. If a player approaching free agency on his second contract is named MVP or Defensive Player of the Year or makes one of three all-NBA teams, he is eligible to sign a six-year max extension worth up to 35 percent of the salary cap for the team that drafted him or traded for him when he was on his rookie deal. If George, who’s set to be a free agent in 2018, is named all-NBA, he’ll be eligible for an extension from the Pacers for more than $200 million, about $75 million more than he could earn otherwise. New York’s Henrik Lundqvist and Montreal’s Carey Price are two of the best goaltenders in the league, with Price stopping 1,656 of the 1,794 shots he faced this season (.923). Lundqvist had a career-low .910 save percentage, but the Rangers are deep on offense — 10 players scored double-digit goals.

This series could tilt on the play of special teams. Spearheaded by Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand, the Bruins’ penalty kill unit allowed 38 goals over the 265 times they were shorthanded. Ottawa struggled with the man advantage, scoring just 43 powerplay goals in 253 tries (17 percent).

Injuries could limit the defending champion Penguins. Forwards Carl Hagelin and Chris Kunitz are doubtful with lower-body injuries, and defenseman Kris Letang is out with a herniated disk. Columbus’ top line of Alexander Wennberg, Brandon Saad and Nick Foligno posted a 27-19 edge at even strength.

Prediction: Capitals win, 4-1

Prediction: Rangers win, 4-3

Prediction: Bruins win, 4-2

Prediction: Blue Jackets win, 4-3

Blackhawks vs. Predators

Wild vs. Blues

Ducks vs. Flames

Oilers vs. Sharks

Game 1: Thursday in Chicago

Game 1: Wednesday in Minnesota

Game 1: Thursday in Anaheim

Game 1: Wednesday in Edmonton

With the West’s top seed, the Blackhawks are in good position to get their fourth title since 2010. Chicago’s top line of Patrick Kane, Artemi Panarin and Artem Anisimov has combined for 33 goals. Anisimov (leg) is questionable, but Chicago is deep, so Predators goalkeeper Pekka Rinne could get picked on.

Eric Staal, who helped Carolina win the Stanley Cup in 2006, signed with the Wild in the offseason and scored 28 goals with 37 assists, giving him his highest point total (65) since 2011-12. Ryan Suter and Jonas Brodin gives coach Bruce Boudreau two shutdown blue-liners to carry Minnesota into the next round.

Calgary (45-33-4) is a wild-card team but has a league-leading 69 percent win rate in one-goal games. But since 2006, only two leaders in that category made it past the second round. The Flames lost four of five to Ryan Getzlaf and Anaheim during the regular season, and Calgary’s goalies are below average.

The Oilers made the playoffs for the first time in 11 years, thanks in large part to center Connor McDavid, 20, who won the Art Ross Trophy as the leading scorer in the NHL with 100 points. The Sharks are experienced but banged up. If Joe Thornton’s knee is a problem, the offense may be too dependent on Brent Burns.

Prediction: Blackhawks win, 4-1

Prediction: Wild win, 4-1

Prediction: Ducks win, 4-2

Prediction: Oilers win, 4-3

First baseman Ryan Zimmerman has focused on his posture and approach during a hot start to 2017.

So the key to Zimmerman’s hot start, which included a .333 average with three homers over his first six games — is not a consciously altered launch angle. What has helped, said hitting coach Rick Schu, is Zimmerman “staying stacked,” keeping his core above his legs and head in line with his body, not diving or dipping. When Zimmerman dives at pitches and hits them the opposite way, they slice. When he stays tall, they fly. Schu also said that Zimmerman, 32, has been more willing to hit early in the count. “I think he’s been aggressive, attacking early,” Schu said. “I think he wants to prove to everyone that he’s still the man — and he is.” CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MLB Ryan Zimmerman can say it now, in part because it is over, in part because he is now certain things can be better. “I had a bad year last year,” Zimmerman said. Plagued by nagging injuries and related inconsistency, Zimmerman was one of the worst statistical hitters in baseball in 2016. His .218 average got as much attention as his average exit velocity. How could someone hit the ball so hard, with so little success? The answer, said Statcast disciples, was launch angle. Zimmerman’s swing is built to come down on the ball. If only he could combine his exit velocity with a higher launch angle, the thinking went, Zimmerman would look like his old self again. Except Zimmerman’s old self never included an uppercut. He built his career on a swing with more moving parts than most, one in which his hands often come down through the ball. On Sunday, as he launched a game-tying, pinch-hit homer to left, Zimmerman hardly dropped his shoulder to create launch angle. Instead, he met a high pitch in its plane and drove it high.

The number of matches the U.S. would host in the 2026 World Cup under a joint bid proposed Monday. The proposal for the first World Cup with the field expanded from 32 to 48 teams puts the vast majority of games, including every one from the quarterfinals onward, on U.S. soil. Mexico and Canada would host 10 matches each. FIFA will award the rights in 2020; no other bidder has emerged yet. (AP) Nationals place SS Trea Turner on 10-day DL with hamstring strain

HEALTH ADVICE

Eat these brain foods Eating a cookie may give you a brief emotional lift, but sustained moodboosting brainpower can only come from a consistent supply of nutritious foods. Here are three that get results.

Want a beer? Run for it. The odd intersection of alcohol and fitness could be big business for both sides TRENDS An advertisement during this year’s Super Bowl showcased the latest fitness trends: Exercisers engage in a high-intensity interval workout. Cyclists spin in tandem. Runners push to finish a race. Finishers discuss their successes … over a Michelob Ultra. It’s part of Michelob’s effort to position itself as the beer for those engaged in an active lifestyle, according to a spokeswoman. Some fitness brands have the same idea. Late last year, Life Time Fitness’ new location in Gaithersburg became the 13th Life Time facility to serve beer and wine. And a growing number of races — such as the Chardonnay Run and the Craft Brew Races, as well as the Virginia Wine Country Half Marathon and the first IPA 10K, coming up this month in California — highlight wineries and breweries as the stars of events. As the lines between working

out and drinking while socializing blur, businesses on both sides are looking to capitalize. Jeff Shapiro, owner of Spindle Fitness in Chicago, says he views alcohol as a business-retention mechanism. “For us, alcohol accelerates the process of creating and deepening these relationships,” he says. “Also, we are normal humans who like to have fun.” Some larger facilities want to offer that same experience. Amy Williams, a Life Time Fitness spokeswoman, says much of the gym’s intention in offering beer and wine options is to create a space for members who prefer “happy hour fitness.” “They do a hard Warrior Sculpt class and they find people in that class who want to go out and have a glass of wine or a beer afterwards,” Williams says. “So, they were doing it all along, and bringing it into our place just allows them to do it without having

Gunning for third place Social psychologists speak of a “third place” as a location besides home and work where individuals feel a welcoming sense of comfort and community. (Religious spaces, pubs, coffeehouses and barbershops often fit into that category.) Fitness facilities — with visions of becoming a lucrative third place — are recognizing that alcohol is a strong adhesive for social bonding. M.P.

to get into their car.” Regardless of where it’s done, drinking as a form of reward is nothing new, says Susan Whitbourne, a psychology professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Whitbourne says she has seen this activity in millennials, who are more likely to exercise so they feel more freedom to drink with their friends later on. This jibes with what Matt Dockstader, founder of Destination Races, based in Sonoma, Calif., has seen in events where beer and wine are a big draw. “ W hen we fi rst sta r ted

DC Bike Party’s free Cherry Blossom Chase starts at Dupont Circle at 8 p.m. Wednesday

[Destination Races], we noticed it was more of a baby boomer thing,” Dockstader says. “But as time has gone on, the age has actually dropped. So I think people have discovered the social element to these races. And for some races, they go as much for the post-race party as they do the race now.” This evolution provides a new audience for alcohol providers as well. For example, Indianabased Upland Brewing Co. fields a competitive cycling team and hosts Tour de Upland, a weekend biking and camping excursion in southern Indiana. Major brewmakers sponsor races, such as Yuengling’s Oktoberfest 5K in Bethlehem, Pa., and the Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach. But as with any new field, there are obstacles. If you are not inclined to drink socially after a workout, you run the risk of feeling left out from the “tribe,” Whitbourne says. “If that feeling … keeps you from exercising completely, that would be a very sad effect.”

DESTINATION RACES

Salmon People who eat omega-3-rich fish tend to have a lower risk of depression. Salmon also contains vitamin B-12, which helps produce brain chemicals that affect mood.

Leafy greens Spinach, chard and other dark leafy greens contain magnesium, which can positively impact serotonin levels and boost your mood. About half of all Americans have low levels of magnesium, and this deficiency has been linked to an increased risk of depression and anxiety.

Blueberries With a high content of antioxidants known as flavonoids, blueberries help activate brain pathways associated with better cognition and less cellular aging. Blueberries are also associated with having a more positive mood.

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

My tantrums are starting to get old Q. I am prone to saying things in anger that I regret. My friends all know this about me and make comments about my “tantrums.” It’s not something I’ve ever really liked about myself but it’s also not something I have ever thought about changing either. Lately, I have been thinking that I want to be better about this, that it doesn’t just have to be who I am, that it is something I can work on. But I feel odd finding a therapist about this. Is this a legit thing that people would seek therapy for? What do I even call this? I GET ANGRY Of course, some might say that my definition of what is a “legit” reason for therapy is pretty much anything besides having spinach in your teeth. But this one is clear-cut. You have a behavior pattern that is hurting others and that you want to change. Therapy can help you understand what started it, what’s keeping it going and, most important, what kind of

steps you can take to choose a new path in those moments and get out of its hold. A cognitive-behavioral therapist who specializes in anger would be ideal, and they can help you identify all the subtle triggers that make you boil over — from physical sensations to hidden emotional vulnerabilities — and learn how to keep them from getting the best of you.

Accepting that the divorce happened and that he is committed to someone else — yes, you need eventually to do that. But that is not synonymous with viewing the divorce as a mistake. That latter mindset will keep you in regret mode, mired in what you could have done differently, preventing you from growing and learning and changing. Here’s the thing: Whether it was a mistake or not does not have to be a done deal. You can choose to not have it be a mistake, by doing what it takes to build a new life for yourself. Yes, divorce is painful, and you may ache for years more, but don’t let it keep you from living. Missing him is one thing, but letting that stop you from seeking out new passions — of the animate and inanimate kind — turns into self-sabotage. Having regrets is part of everyone’s life story. The ideal way to act on them is to use them as insights in moving forward, not traps that keep you wishing for a time machine. Create your own doover not with him, but with the blank slate of the future. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. entertainment Q+A | ALLISON WILLIAMS

She’s the best at playing the worst

For ‘The View,’ talking politics makes ratings

Allison Williams is having a breakout year. She’s best known as Marnie on “Girls,” which ends its six-season run on Sunday, but thanks to a brilliant turn as the villainous Rose in Jordan Peele’s hit horror film “Get Out,” Williams is no longer synonymous with the self-absorbed millennial she plays on Lena Dunham’s HBO dramedy. Here, Williams discusses her “Girls” character, why she had to be in “Get Out” and her next move.

Do you find compassion for her? It has been hard to play someone that I don’t agree with a lot of the time. … I think when people judge her freely in my presence it’s like this weird feeling where I know that it’s a function of having played her convincingly, but I also know that there

22

is some reason it hurts. And I think there’s a reason beyond the fact that I’ve been playing her so long. I think that it also has to do with how much she represents our generation — people I know. “Get Out” is your first movie role. You’ve said that you knew immediately that you wanted to do the film. It was the power of the script, coupled with the power of Jordan’s voice and, once we spoke, his intellect and his engagement and investment in the subject matter. And also I felt like I kind of had a job to do. I felt like he was looking to cast me as a representative of [someone] who is perhaps the whitest girl imaginable, and I was very happy to make sure that I deployed all of that whiteness that I’ve had my whole life to this character to make sure that she was full around the edges with everything that she needed to be — white privilege

On Sunday, TV bids adieu to “Girls,” and with it Allison Williams’ Marnie, the one you love to hate.

and all of the issues that are dealt with in this movie. What’s it like playing such an evil character [in that film]? That was, as an exercise, absolutely fascinating. I listened to true crime podcasts to desensitize myself to the idea, to remove my shock — my very privileged Connecticut shock — that someone could be like this. And start looking at her kind of matter-offactly so that I could get in her mind a little bit easier without judging her. It is very hard not to judge [Rose].

HBO

On “Girls,” Marnie has come to represent a type of insufferable, privileged millennial. Do you think that’s fair? I feel very close to her and yet I try to look at her from a place of remove because I think that’s helpful in engaging with the show after the fact. But while I’m playing her I have to be fully in her corner. Of course, Marnie is insufferable to almost anyone who watches her. And I think part of it is that she serves as a kind of fun-house mirror reflection of our culture, and a certain subset of our culture, that people don’t want to lump themselves in with.

What’s next for you? I need a beat to kind of sit back and look at everything and think about what my next move is going to be. … With “Girls” and “Get Out,” I’ve been lucky enough to work with two first-time, basically, writer-directors who had this very clear vision of the tone and landscape and subject matter. Both projects are so a product of their time. I like working with beginners because I feel like everyone works best when they feel they have something to prove and something to lose. BETHONIE BUTLER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

AWARDS

The number of Billboard Music Awards nominations Drake and The Chainsmokers each received this year, as announced Monday. The rapper and the music duo lead the 2017 nominees, and set a record for the most Billboard Music Awards nominations in a year. Other top contenders include Twenty One Pilots with 17 nominations, Rihanna with 14 and The Weeknd with 13. Drake and The Chainsmokers will compete for the biggest prize, top artist, along with Adele, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and others. The Billboard Music Awards air live on May 21. (AP) “Ex Machina” actress Sonoya Mizuno joins cast of “Crazy Rich Asians”

TELEVISION The unquenchable thirst for chatter about President Trump has changed the dynamics of a fierce daytime television competition much as it has in late-night TV. ABC’s “The View” has spent more time talking politics with the arrival of a new administration, stopping the momentum of its CBS rival “The Talk,” which sticks to pop culture. It’s a turnabout similar to Stephen Colbert supplanting Jimmy Fallon as the new king of late-night. “It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of what Barbara Walters created 20 years ago — a show where women can have a real vigorous debate about the issues of the day and can discuss the things that matter,” says James Goldston, president of ABC News, which supervises “The View.” Since the start of this year, the average audience for “The View” has increased by 1 percent over 2016, while “The Talk” is down 6 percent, the Nielsen company said. “The View” regularly beats its rival now. Bill Carroll, a consultant and expert on TV’s syndication market, notes the similarities in what is happening with Colbert and Fallon. But he wonders: “Is this something that’s the beginning of a shift or is it an indication of where the attention is right now?” That question will be answered in the coming months. DAVID BAUDER (AP)

“Kylie making her own reality TV show called ‘Life of Kylie.’ Um, isn’t everything about your life already on your Snapchat?” @MUSHFIGAWAHEED critiquing the

announcement that Kylie Jenner is getting her own spinoff show from “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” called “Life of Kylie,” on E! The network announced Monday that the eight-part docuseries will premiere this summer. Some Twitter users wondered how there could possibly be more to Kylie’s life than what she already shares on her Snapchat.

“Look, neither of these men were perfect, but seriously, remember when this was what presidents were like?” @LEFTYJENNYC reacting to this photo of former presidents

George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, which Clinton shared via Twitter on Sunday. The Clintons spent time with the Bushes in Houston over the weekend, with Clinton tweeting that they talked about kids, grandchildren and socks. Clinton gave Bush a pair of socks with dogs on them, and some Twitter users noticed how happy Bush looked. “I’m now convinced the older you get, the more you appreciate getting new socks,” @kaleylawrimore tweeted. Despite their history as political rivals, the 41st and 42nd presidents maintain a friendship.

“This is the most heartbreaking / smartest thing I have ever seen. New age breakups.” @PATOHARAA tweeting about the “Spotify breakup playlist” that went viral. Brigham Young University student Kirsten Titus, 19, went on a couple of dates with fellow student Wyatt Hall, 20. When Titus decided she wanted to date someone else, she gave Hall the bad news by making him a Spotify playlist of song titles that became the message: “Do you / Still / Want To / Kiss Me/ Because / I Am / Kinda Lovin / Someone Else / But We Can Still Be Friends.”

“The first posting here ... will be an index of corrections and amendments to the text in order to bring it more in line with my original intent.” @ALECBALDWINNEVERTHELESS, a Facebook page Alec Baldwin created seemingly to drag HarperCollins, the publisher of his new memoir, “Nevertheless.” Baldwin posted last week that the page is a place for him to offer supplementary material to the memoir and correct what he described as “SEVERAL typos and errors.” He wrote that the book’s editors were “too busy to do a proper and forensic edit.”

Busy’s Uber to someday inspire a horror film Busy Philips posted a video on her Instagram Story detailing an Uber ride with her husband. The Uber had an uncomfortable vibe, she said, so she asked her husband if they were “about to get murdered.” Philips said a “creepy guy” then popped up in the backseat. She started screaming, “I’m not going to be killed today!” and the two left the Uber. (EXPRESS)

Irina Shayk and Bradley Cooper welcomed a baby together two weeks ago, People magazine reported. This is the first child of the Russian supermodel and Oscar-nominated actor, who have been dating since 2015. Specific details about the baby, including the sex, name and birthday, have not yet been disclosed. The couple has kept mum about their baby news, though a source confirmed Shayk’s pregnancy to People in November last year, just after the model appeared in the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.
