Crazy eyes: What’s with Hoover’s stare? BREAK-IN
before him, depending on whom you ask, Hoover had hazel eyes. Racing President Herbie’s eyes, however, are just terrifying. While Coolidge was the last president to throw out a first pitch during a Washington World Series game, Hoover threw out the ceremonial first pitch on opening day in D.C. all four years that he was in office. The Senators went 1-3 on opening day with Hoover in attendance, including a 13-4 loss to the Philadelphia Athletics on April 17, 1929, his
first as president. From The Post story that day: “The President and the First Lady proved themselves fans of the first water as they took part in the opening ceremonies and then settled back to watch each play with interest. Mrs. Hoover had a sack of peanuts, the first requisite of a real fan, while the President kept his eyes glued on the plate where no bit of action was lost on him.” Did someone say “eyes”? Sometime between 3:10 a.m. and 5:05 a.m. on March 18, the man pokes around a Coke machine at the burger shop on Irving Street in Columbia Heights, stops at the sink and cranks on the grill, the video shows. NATIONALS Herbert Hoover, who will be known as “Herbie” at Nationals Park this season, made his debut Sunday as the newest member of the Racing Presidents. Like Calvin Coolidge last year, Hoover was introduced as part of the White House Historical Association’s partnership with the Nationals and is expected to be retired at the end of the season. This year’s WHHA Christmas ornament is dedicated to Hoover, as it was last year to Coolidge, his predecessor in the Oval Office. If the tradition of choosing presidents sequentially continues, fans can expect to see FDR at Nats Park next year. Hoover won his first race, but all anyone wanted to talk about was Herbie’s creepy, reptilian eyes. “Nightmare fuel” is how one fan described them. McAuliffe wants secrecy for execution drugs Va. governor guts plan that could have forced use of electric chair VIRGINIA Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Monday that he has proposed keeping secret the identities of pharmacies that supply lethal-injection drugs for executions, instead of changing the law to force inmates to die in the electric chair if there are no available drugs. McAuliffe stripped the contentious electric-chair provision from a bill and vowed to veto the measure if lawmakers reintroduce it. He warned that unless Virginia shields lethal-
injection-drug manufacturers from public scrutiny, capital punishment in the state will come McAuliffe to a halt. Lawmakers “have the opportunity to be part of the solution,” McAuliffe said. “If they pass up that opportunity, they will bring the death penalty to an end here in Virginia.” The governor’s proposal would give Virginia’s Department of Corrections the authority to compound its own execution drugs using products from pharmacies whose identities would remain confidential.
Without the secrecy provision, the measure is “only an empty gesture,” McAuliffe said, because manufacturers will continue to refuse to supply drugs to Virginia unless their names are kept under wraps. Florida, Texas and Ohio have included similar provisions in their compounding laws, he said. Virginia is one of at least eight states that allow electrocutions, but currently gives inmates the choice of lethal injection or the electric chair. The original bill sought to allow the state to use the electric chair when lethal injection drugs are unavailable. ALANNA DURKIN

up from the private company American Medical Response. Late last month, the District began using the commercial service to transport patients with less-serious symptoms. The new system is intended to free up city medics and ambulances for more dire cases and ease the strain on a department that has struggled to handle a growing number of medical calls. City paramedics or firefighters still respond to each 911 call and assess each patient’s condition. In the more serious cases, they transport patients as usual. service, or about 32 percent of the overall cases. They represent about half of the patients with less-serious conditions. D.C. Fire Chief Gregory M. Dean proposed the plan, based on his experience as fire chief in Seattle, as the first step to help deal with a system that was running out of available ambulances on a daily basis. In the first week of supplementing the agency’s fleet, Dean seemed pleased but remained circumspect in his analysis. He said his staffers are still adjusting and chose to transport hundreds of patients in instances in which the private service could have been used. “My initial assessment is,
even though our people have been a little bit shy, is that they are embracing this,” Dean said. The new system faced a tremendous test on its first day, March 28, when authorities were called to four fires, rescued 17 high school boaters from the Potomac River and then rushed to the U.S. Capitol after police shot a man with a gun. Even the head of the city’s firefighters’ union, often critical of top officials, praised the department’s plan and leadership. “It could have been a national embarrassment. Goldman Sachs to pay $5B to settle complaint BUSINESS The Justice Department on Monday announced a roughly $5 billion settlement with Goldman Sachs over the sale of mortgagebacked securities leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. The government accused the bank of misleading investors about the quality of its loans. The $5.06 billion deal resolves state and federal probes into the sale of shoddy mortgages in the run-up to the housing bubble and subsequent economic meltdown. It requires the bank to pay a $2.39 billion civil penalty and an
additional $1.8 billion in relief to underwater homeowners and distressed borrowers, along with $875 million in other claims. “This resolution holds Goldman Sachs accountable for its serious misconduct in falsely assuring investors that securities it sold were backed by sound mortgages, when it knew that they were full of mortgages that were likely to fail,” Acting Associate Attorney General Stuart Delery said. The agreement, smaller than deals reached with several of Goldman’s Wall Street counterparts, is the latest

Since the 2011 meltdown at Japan’s Fukushima Daichi nuclear power plant, no humans have been able to live on the poisoned land around it. Wild boars, on the other hand, have thrived, and they’re causing hundreds of thousands of dollars of damage to regional agriculture. Controlling the population has proven difficult. Without natural predators, the population is booming. In the past two years, the number of boars that have been hunted has increased more than 300 percent, from 3,000 to 13,000. While pork is prized in Japan, these boars are unsafe to eat, creating an additional challenge — what to do with their carcasses. If hunters kill 13,000 boars, they’d have as much as 2,600,000 pounds of potentially hazardous flesh to get rid of. (TWP)

TSA: U.S. transit faces ‘low’ risk of terror strike AP
TEST DRIVES PAUL J. RICHARDS (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)
NATIONAL SECURITY Although terrorists have attacked trains and subway systems in Europe, there is relatively little risk that they will assault similar targets in the United States, according to the nation’s transportation security chief. “Right now we consider the general risk to be low in the United States domestically against surface transportation,” said Peter Neffenger, administrator of the Transportation Security Administration. “That’s freight rail, light rail, metro subway systems, over the road buses and the like.” Hundreds of people have been killed or injured in Europe by terrorists who attacked trains and subways. The most recent assault was an explosion aboard a Brussels metro train last month that killed 16 people. The most deadly came in 2004, when 10 explosions on four commuter trains in Madrid killed 192 people an injured about 2,000. Neffenger, speaking with reporters on Friday, said that is unlikely to happen in the U.S. “It doesn’t mean there’s no

threat, there’s no risk, but it’s relatively low,” he said. Some of his assessment comes from “a vast national intelligence network” and is classified information, he said, but the rest evolves from common sense or, perhaps, seeing the situation through a terrorist’s eyes. “We know that there is a huge psychological benefit from the terrorist’s perspective if you can attack something like the aviation system successfully,” he said. Terrorists know that any form of attack will show their hand,
likely leading to their arrest if they survive the attack. “I think terror groups, and individuals that want to do harm, want to ensure that if they’re going to expose themselves, they get the maximum return on that exposure,” Neffenger said. That means attacking an airport or airplane, he said, but he was quick to add that TSA works with transit and railroad police, as well as local law enforcement, to protect the non-aviation sector of the transportation system. Can a ‘female-only Uber’ be legal? Chariot for Women, set for Boston debut, faces equal-access concerns TRANSPORTATION This month, a “female-only Uber” called Chariot for Women plans to launch in Boston. The mission of the Massachusetts-based company seems simple: “Driven by women. Exclusively for women.” While Uber, which has seen a driver charged with murder in Michigan and has agreed to pay millions to settle lawsuits over driver background checks, continues to draw criticism about safety, Michael Pelletz is launching a competitor to help
keep women safe. But Chariot for Women also raises significant legal questions about equal access. The service could be challenged in court because it hires only women — and because it serves only women and children under age 13. The Next Web labeled it “a female-only Uber that could get shut down before it takes off.” “This company sounds great,” Joseph L. Sulman, an employmentlaw specialist, told the Boston Globe. “Whether it’s legal or not is a different question.” Chariot’s female drivers will pick up women and children under 13. Drivers, who will be fingerprinted and go through background checks in a partnership
with local law enforcement, will earn at least $25 per hour — what the company calls “the best compensation structure in the business.” Drivers will have to answer a security question at the beginning of each work day for Chariot to confirm their identity. The app will provide passengers and drivers with a “safe word” — the ride won’t begin until the driver confirms the word with the passenger. There is no surge pricing. But ahead of Chariot’s launch April 19, Pelletz faces an uncomfortable legal question: Does Chariot discriminate? “There’s nothing wrong with advertising particularly to a female customer base,” said Dahlia

Training for U.S. cyberdefenders in short supply The threat of hacking seems to lurk around every corner, but American universities may not be doing enough to prepare the next generation of cyberdefenders. None of America’s top 10 computer science programs — as ranked by U.S. News & World Report in 2015 — requires graduates to take even one cybersecurity course, according to a new analysis from security firm CloudPassage. Three of the 10 top-ranked programs don’t even offer a single elective cybersecurity course, according to the company’s findings. And only one of the top 36 programs, the University of Michigan, requires students to take a security course to graduate. The dramatic increase in data breaches in recent years has highlighted the need for cybersecurity skills in the workforce. Private companies and the government alike have struggled to recruit people who can help them fend off digital attacks. “Our research reinforces what many have been saying: There is an incredible IT security skills gap. But what we’ve revealed is that a major root cause is a lack of education and training at accredited schools,” CloudPassage chief executive Robert Thomas said in a blog post about the study. Ways to woo a delegate There are few legal limits on how GOP candidates could go after convention votes WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX
GOP on justices: For this year, eight is enough
Republican election law attorney Michael Toner thinks “the vast majority of the deals are going to be political deals. People want attention, a seat at the table.” That was the case in 1976, when Ford invited entire state delegations to the White House, and even hosted a group on the USS Forrestal to watch the July 4 bicentennial celebration, according to Jules Witcover’s 1977 book, “Marathon.” Reagan tried to match him with his Hollywood connections, recruiting John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Pat Boone to call wavering delegates. Anti-bribery laws would probably forbid delegates from outright selling their votes, and most experts doubt there will be systematic efforts to try to win over delegates with cash. “It’s a pretty dangerous game to play,” Herman said. “Putting aside FEC exposure or even criminal exposure, I think the political exposure if it were disclosed and the public knew about it — it would just seem so unseemly.” MATEA GOLD
Can the Supreme Court do its job this year with just eight justices? As the court’s vacancy enters its third month, Republicans seem to be saying: Sure. Why not? The “sky won’t fall” with eight on the court. That is the headline in a Des Moines Register op-ed by Sen. Chuck Grassley, above, R-Iowa, published Sunday. He was responding to a Register editorial calling the GOP blockade “un-American” and specifically blaming Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. His main point is that the court has sat with six, seven and as many as 10 justices. “The size of the court as Congress designed it over the years has frequently changed,” he writes, “and hasn’t left the court in disarray.” There’s no law that there be nine justices. It’s the same reason Republicans feel they can block President Obama’s nominee for the rest of 2016: There’s no rule saying they have to approve or even consider Merrick Garland, the nominee. History, of course, can be cherry-picked. The exceptions Grassley cites were products of extenuating circumstances, not design. The U.S. Code suggests there should be nine justices. But this battle is about rallying the base, and there’s no reason conservatives wouldn’t pick this “Why not eight?” case and run with it, even if it means a few split decisions this year.

POLITICS Imagine this: Donald Trump wooing delegates with rides on his gold-plated private jet. A wealthy Ted Cruz supporter wining and dining them at the Cleveland convention. Welcome bags stocked with expensive swag awaiting party activists in their hotel rooms, courtesy of a well-funded super PAC. The already freewheeling Republican presidential contest is fast turning into a personal persuasion game as the candidates pursue a no-holds-barred effort to lock up delegates — and there are few limits on how far they can go. The jockeying has already led to accusations of unfair play. On Sunday, Trump accused Cruz of luring delegates with unspecified “goodies” and “crooked shenanigans,” a charge that the Cruz campaign dismissed as “falsehoods.” Under regulations established in the 1980s, delegates cannot take money from corporations, labor unions, federal contractors or foreign nationals. But an individual donor is permitted to give a delegate unlimited sums to support his or her efforts to get selected to go to the convention, including money to defray the costs of travel and lodging. A candidate’s campaign committee can also pay for delegate expenses. Some legal experts say a campaign could even cover an all-expense-paid weekend prior to the convention to meet with senior staff at, say, a Trump-owned luxury golf resort in Florida. Given that the last contested Republican convention was Gerald Ford vs. Ronald Reagan in 1976, many of Washington’s campaign-finance experts are paging through old Federal Election Commission opinions, trying to discern what delegates can accept. Trump and Cruz, who have

shown their relentlessness this campaign, are expected to look for every legal edge possible if neither is able to secure 1,237 delegates before the July convention. Also in the mix is Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who forged an alliance with Trump Saturday in a delegate fight in Michigan. The FEC delegate rules were established long before super PACs came on the scene and offer little guidance about how such groups can lobby delegates. One possibility floated by strategists in recent days: a super PAC-financed war room that collects reams of personal data to target the nearly 200 activists and elected officials who are not bound to a specific candidate. The lack of clear guardrails has left party activists unsettled. “It’s almost like we need a campaign-finance system for delegates,” said Gregory Carlson, 27, who ran unsuccessfully to be a delegate in Colorado. Since most delegates are expected to cover their own travel and stay in Cleveland, they could

be offered thousands of dollars in assistance. Just how far those payments can go has not been tested. “If they decide to go to Cleveland via Cabo, that might be a problem,” said Anthony Herman, a former FEC general counsel. But it’s unclear that such a perk would be made public if it was provided by a single donor. Under FEC rules, a contribution from an individual to a delegate does not have to be disclosed, as long as it was not made in coordination with a campaign or as an independent effort to boost a candidate. That means gifts could flow to delegates unseen.

Capitals open playoffs with healthy edge NHL PLAYOFFS With the grind of the 82-game regular season behind them, the Capitals’ injury list heading into the postseason reads as follows: Jay Beagle, lower-body injury, day-to-day. That’s it. A glance around the Eastern Conference tells a different story. The Lightning will begin the postseason without leadingscorer Steven Stamkos and toppairing defenseman Anton Stralman, the Rangers are without No. 1 defenseman Ryan McDonagh and the Penguins are missing injured stars Evgeni Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury. The Islanders finished the regular season with five regulars out with injuries. While good fortune plays a role, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan believes there is a link between his team
entering the playoffs healthy and the comfortable perch they enjoyed atop the standings down the stretch. “Since we were doing well, we could take our time and let guys recover fully [from previous injuries],” MacLellan said. “We took extra time with [John] Carlson and [Brooks] Orpik. We got our guys 100 percent healthy before they came back. I think we benefitted from our depth and we benefitted from our record. Down the stretch here when we had a little bit of a cushion that we could play with, we could distribute ice time differently. We could do things that would keep us healthy, or try to keep us healthy strategically.” Carlson (56 games played) and Orpik (41 games) were sidelined for long stretches this season, but Washington’s top defensive pairing from last spring was reunited during the final week of the regular season and both say they feel physically and mentally fresh with the

Most teams in the East have at least 1 key player dealing with an injury
With the NBA playoffs opening this weekend, are we destined to see Warriors-Spurs and Cavaliers-Raptors in the conference finals? Here are the teams with the best chance at taking down a frontrunner.
Forward Jay Beagle is the only player listed on the Capitals’ injury report, and he’s expected to play in Game 1 against the Flyers on Thursday.
playoffs approaching. Nicklas Backstrom recently missed three games with an upper-body injury (April 1-5) and sat out the regular-season finale for precautionary reasons, but the Capitals’ No. 1 center is also good to go, having taken advantage of a few late-season days off. Barring any setbacks, MacLellan said Beagle is expected to return for Game 1 of the Capitals’ first-round series against the Flyers on Thursday (7 p.m., NBCSN). Beagle left Saturday’s game in St. Louis with an apparent left foot injury after blocking a slap shot and did not dress in the regular-season finale Sunday.
Along with veteran Mike Richards, Beagle provides the Capitals with options down the middle and on the penalty kill. “I think every year that we’ve played, I think Beagle’s minutes have gone up pretty significantly,” MacLellan said. “You need reliable players to play hard minutes in the playoffs, guys that coaches feel confident in [and] that they can put out at any time and not be hurt by them.” In the Flyers, Washington will face one of the hottest teams over the past six weeks as Philadelphia closed out the campaign with a 15-5-3 record to secure the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. Nationals right-hander hopes confidence in change-up continues NATIONALS Joe Ross impressed in his season debut Sunday in many ways. In the Nationals’ 4-2 win over Miami, he pitched himself calmly out of jams several times. Despite giving up a leadoff triple on the first pitch of the game to Dee Gordon, he allowed only one run in seven innings. “I told Joe: ‘You just learned damage control today because that could have turned into a three- or four-run inning,’” manager Dusty Baker said. “But
damage control is the key, especially for a young pitcher, and after that he was masterful.” Two less obvious facets of Ross’ start stood out: He held runners on base well, and he flashed his work-in-progress change-up. In the sixth inning, Gordon singled. The score was 1-1, and Ross needed to hold Gordon, one of the fastest players in baseball, out of scoring position. Over the next two batters, Ross threw to first base seven times. “He made some good pickoff throws,” first baseman Clint Robinson said. “It wasn’t like he was just flipping it over there. He was really challenging him to get back to the bag.”

Ross’ debut more than a solid start
Joe Ross earned the win in his first start of the season Sunday after allowing one run in seven innings.
Ross and catcher Wilson Ramos had messed with Gordon’s timing so much that when the speedster finally decided to go for second base, Ramos easily threw him out. Ross didn’t throw his changeup much but used it against lefthanded batters, getting Christian Yelich and Justin Bour to fly out on it in the fourth inning. Neither hitter was able to square up well on the 88 mph change-up. “I think just knowing that I can throw it below the zone and not just rely on fastball, slider — that was big,” Ross said. “Hopefully I can carry that throughout the rest of the year.” JAMES WAGNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NCAA says no new bowls for the next three years
Ex-Saints defensive end Will Smith, 34, was killed in a case of road rage, by a Humvee-driving man who rearended his Mercedes and then shot him in the back and side, according to a police warrant read in court. Cardell Hayes, 28, was ordered held on $1 million bond Sunday night after police arrested him on a charge of second-degree murder. Defense attorney John Fuller said Hayes is not guilty of murder, and that the story is more complex than the police account. Fuller said Hayes ran into the back of Smith’s Mercedes while following a hit-andrun driver who had rear-ended his Humvee and sped off. (AP)
The NCAA is prohibiting the creation of new bowl games for the next three years after three teams with 5-7 records were needed to fill the record number of bowls last season. The NCAA’s football oversight committee started a task force to study the Bowl Subdivision postseason after there were not enough six-win, bowl-eligible teams last season to fill the 40 games. The committee will deliver a full set of recommendations on reforming the postseason in June. Three cities — Austin, Texas; Charleston, S.C.; and Myrtle Beach, S.C. — were in the process of trying to gain approval for new bowl games. (AP)

certified nutritionists. But as more fitness centers dole out nutrition advice, registered dietitians and nutritionists recommend consumers check out their qualifications before taking heed. “Nutrition can be a dangerous game,” said Jim White, a registered dietitian and owner of an eponymous chain of fitness studios in Virginia. “People have diabetes or heart conditions, and if we don’t promote the right foods, it could affect their health.” Nutrition consultation is a standard feature of every gym membership at Jim White Fitness & Nutrition Studios, where members can take part in nutrition boot camps, workshops and 90-day challenges.
White has even struck a partnership with 50 restaurants in the Hampton Roads area to point out menu items that are healthy enough to be “Jim Whiteapproved.” The list of restaurants includes local eateries and national chains, such as Firehouse Subs and Moe’s Southwest Grill. Clients can also sign up for one of three dietary plans. Packages range from $299 to $529 a month and are covered by some health insurance plans, White said. The dietitians provide a full assessment, checking for such things as food allergies, and create a plan. Plans include a dietician ridding your pantry of junk food and restocking it with healthier foods you select together on a trip to

Juliet Burgh, the studio’s nutrition director, and her team of nutritionists guide clients through a three-step process to tailor a program to their specific needs. After taking body measurements and discussing eating habits, the team creates individualized meal plans. That process takes six to eight weeks; periodic coaching continues afterward. Over at Barre3 on 14th Street, franchise owner Alicia Sokol said the company encourages members to incorporate some form of fat, fiber and protein into every meal. There are a series of videos on the site teaching viewers how to cook food. Sokol also contributes some of her own recipes from her blog, Weekly Greens (weeklygreens.com). “Our nutrition philosophy is pretty straightforward: Just eat whole foods — close-to-theground foods, foods in their natural states,” Sokol said. “It’s really about balance and trying to eat foods that are nourishing and give people energy.” DANIELLE
You may want to reach for skim milk while on your health kick, but a recent study published in the journal Circulation suggests that adults who drink whole milk have a lower risk for diabetes than those who drink low-fat or skim. Tufts researchers looked at blood samples drawn from 3,333 adults over 15 years and found that those with higher levels of dairy fat in their systems had, on average, a 46 percent lower risk of contracting diabetes during the study period than those with lower levels. Another study, recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, looked at 18,438 women and found that a greater intake of high-fat dairy products — but not low-fat versions — was associated with less weight gain. I am not sad or particularly down but work tasks make me groan and I hate all the grown-up things I have to do to maintain my condo. I would rather sit on the couch and veg. I am 30 and I feel this makes me strange. Can I be a happy couch potato?

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK
It might be time to get creative Q. I resent that my parents discouraged me from going into a creative field and wanted me to study law or medicine. I became an attorney and have regrets, and think I would’ve been happier as a high school drama teacher or actor. My younger sister went to community college art classes and at 25 has no career. I’ve never heard them criticize this. IT WASN’T FAIR You’re making this about them instead of you. Have you taken steps to re-explore your creative side — community theater? Volunteering with high-schoolers? Acting classes? You’re giving your parents more power by letting them affect your present and future rather than just your past. Yes, it sounds like they had unfair expectations, unfairly
enforced. And who knows why your parents loosened up with your sister. But your life is your life now. Don’t have your happiness hinge on a decision made by others when you were in high school. Nurture your creative self with small steps that might turn big. And watch the resentment start to fade, whether your parents ever validate it or not.
Sure you can, but I’m unclear if you are, because being happy is not the same thing as being “not particularly down.” Have you investigated any physiological reasons for your lack of energy: thyroid or hormonal issues, sleep problems, medications? Mentally, how do you really feel? Are there things you actually want to be doing, rather than just wondering if you should? Do you feel you have fulfilling connections to other people, your work, interests, and your life at large? Are you zoning out on the couch because it’s restorative, or because it’s the default escape? If things look the same in two years, five years or 20 years, will you be content with that? Maybe you’re naturally a cocooner. The key is who you want to be and whether you’re on that path. Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of the book “The Friendship Fix” (friendshipfix.com).

Does ‘Confirmation’ take sides? TELEVISION “The first time I saw it hanging in my trailer, it gave me chills,” Kerry Washington says of the replica of the iconic turquoise skirt suit that Anita Hill wore in 1991 during Clarence Thomas’ Supreme Court nomination hearings. “It felt like a reminder to not give in to caricature.” The actress plays Hill in “Confirmation,” a new and already controversial film that dramatizes the hearings, premiering at 8 p.m. Saturday on HBO. Hill, a law professor and former employee of Thomas’, accused him of sexual harassment in the workplace, leading to a riveting weekend of Senate testimony from both figures and their supporting witnesses. Given Washington’s liberal leanings and her title of executive producer, viewers may wonder whether “Confirmation” tilts in favor of Hill. But its creators say they were not interested in showing whose testimony was true. Screenwriter Susannah Grant, also an executive producer, was more interested in “the conflict

In February, Politico reported that former Republican senators, after seeing an early script, called it “unfair to everyone but Anita Hill” and “full of errors and distortions,” and that one of the lawyers that represented Thomas at the hearings threatened litigation. At a forum at American University last week, Hill said she maintains that the investigation and confirmation process, led by then-Sen. Joseph Biden, was flawed. The film reflects that, she said. “I’m not looking for a film
to take sides,” said Hill, now a professor at Brandeis University. “We can’t know from the movie [what actually happened] because the process was set up for you not to know.” On screen, Washington delivers the testimony in Hill’s famously soft, even-toned voice — a performance that’s nothing like the one Washington gives as the high-strung Olivia Pope on ABC’s smash “Scandal.” (Thomas is played by Wendell Pierce, of HBO’s “Treme.”) Washington, who was 14 at the time of Thomas’ nomination, says the hearings split her household. “My dad felt compassionately pulled toward Thomas,” she recalls. “He understood the pain of being a black man put in that position and having your career ripped from you publicly. And I understood that, from the perspective of race. “And through my mom’s eyes, I was aware of the gender politics, which was something my dad couldn’t as easily understand at the time. It was one of the first moments I was forced to engage with my own intersectionality as a woman and as a person off color, and how complex both h of those identities could be.”

sounds a bit skeptical about Ticketmaster announcing it will start selling tickets to events directly on Facebook. Ticketmaster plans to launch the limited service by the end of the month in response to the growing number of customers who spend more time on mobile apps than they do on websites. Tickets to some events bought on Facebook will still need to be “claimed” through Ticketmaster’s website.
DO YOU HAVE ALCOHOL PROBLEMS? If you or someone you know is drinking too much, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism may be able to help. We conduct studies on how alcohol affects the body and are looking for new ways to treat alcohol problems. If you qualify, you can receive alcoholism treatment while you participate in our research. You may be eligible for the study if you: ● Are age 18 or older ● Are not pregnant ● Use alcohol more than any other drug ● Have tried to stop drinking alcohol but can’t Participants will: ● Stay at the Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, for about four weeks ● Undergo detoxification (if needed) and receive alcohol treatment ● Complete questionnaires, have blood drawn, and have a brain imaging scan There is no cost to participate. Participants may be compensated and may receive travel assistance.
