You’ve heard of a “concept car.” How about a “concept crib”? Ford and a Spanish creative studio designed a crib that simulates a nighttime car ride to help babies fall asleep, UPI reported Monday. The crib aims to replicate the motion, sounds and lighting of an evening ride that relaxes infants. The adult in charge can customize the volume of faux traffic noise or falling rain, for example. In three days, the Capitals would return to D.C. for their regular-season finale — hopefully to hard, slick ice. But until then, Verizon Center would transform four times for four events. There was a stage to build for a John Mayer concert last Thursday, and then a field for the venue’s newest tenant — the Washington Valor of the Arena Football League, which played its inaugural game Friday. Mayor Muriel Bowser is set to announce today legislation that would enhance the rights of victims of sexual assaults, particularly juveniles, and expand what can be considered a crime during an attack. Measures being proposed reflect year-long deliberations of an independent task force formed to address concerns that rape cases from several years ago had been mishandled and that younger victims lacked the same resources offered to adults. The bill was submitted last week, and Bowser plans to discuss details today during a news conference. It adds provisions to a sexual assault victim’s rights act passed in 2014. It would allow victims a greater choice of advocates to be present during interviews with police and prosecutors, and would require prosecutors to tell victims why a case might not be taken to court. In addition, the bill would

Army veteran to run against Comstock Democrat Daniel Helmer, an Army veteran, on Tuesday announced his campaign to challenge Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., in Northern Virginia. Attorneys for Rolling Stone and Nicole Eramo announced this week that they reached a confidential settlement over the 2014 story “A Rape on Campus,”

putting an end to the lengthy case stemming from the nowdebunked claims of a woman identified only as “Jackie.” Eramo had alleged that the article portrayed her as indifferent to victims of sexual assault. “We are delighted that this dispute is now behind us, as it allows Nicole to move on and focus on doing what she does best, which is supporting victims of sexual assault,” said Libby Locke, an attorney for Eramo. Trump tells agencies to plan to cut workers POLITICS The federal government hiring freeze implemented by President Trump as one of his first acts in office was lifted Wednesday, while the White House instructed all federal agencies to submit a plan by June 30 to shrink their civilian workforces, offering the first details on how the Trump administration aims to reduce the size and scope of the government. Office of Management and Budget Director director Mick Mulvaney told reporters Tuesday that the move was part of the president’s campaign pledge to

“drain the swamp” in Washington and save taxpayers money. “This does not mean that agencies will be free to hire willynilly,” Mulvaney said of the return to hiring. He called the restructuring — laid out in a 14-page memo — a “smarter plan, a more strategic plan, a more surgical plan.” Mulvaney also said agency leaders must finalize their longterm plans to cut the number of federal workers starting in October 2018. U.S.-Russia relations hit a low POLITICS With tensions rising over Syria and other issues, President Trump said Wednesday that U.S. relations with Russia “may be at an all-time low” as he moved ever further away from his campaign promises to establish better ties with Moscow. “Right now we’re not getting along with Russia at all,” Trump said flatly during a White House news conference with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. It was a grim assessment that echoed the words of Trump’s top diplomat, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who left an almost two-hour meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow declaring the countries had reached a “low point” in relations. Trump said Tillerson had completed a successful meeting with Putin, where “things went pretty well.” But he said it was an open question where relations go from here. Trump said “it would be a fantastic thing” if the two nations got along better, but cautioned that “it may be just the opposite.” Could Syria have launched the chemical weapons attack with Russia’s advance knowledge? Trump said it was “certainly possible,” although “probably unlikely.” The less-than-positive assessments of relations by both Trump and Tillerson reflected the former Cold War foes’ inability to forge

An internal Department of Homeland Security assessment shows the agency has already found 33,000 more detention beds to house undocumented immigrants, opened discussions with dozens of local police forces that could be empowered with enforcement authority and identified where construction of Trump’s border wall could begin. The agency also is considering ways to speed up the hiring of hundreds of new Customs and Border Patrol officers, including ending polygraph and physical fitness tests in some cases. Administration officials said the plans are preliminary and have not been reviewed by senior DHS management. Also, the plans could be held up by the prohibitive costs outlined in the report and resistance in Congress. Many lawmakers are already balking at approving billions in spending on the wall and additional border security. Cost concerns are peppered throughout the DHS assessment. Legally, the U.N. has no jurisdiction over peacekeepers, leaving punishment to the countries that contribute the troops. In Haiti, at least 134 Sri Lankan peacekeepers exploited nine children in a sex ring from 2004 to 2007, according to an internal U.N. report obtained by the AP. In the wake of the report, 114 peacekeepers were sent home. None was ever imprisoned. In March, U.N. SecretaryGeneral Antonio Guterres announced new measures to tackle sexual abuse and exploitation by U.N. peacekeepers. “Let us declare in one voice: We will not tolerate anyone committing or condoning sexual exploitation and abuse,” Guterres said.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI In the ruins of a tropical hideaway, abandoned children tried to make a life for themselves. But they never could scrape together enough to beat back the hunger, until the U.N. peacekeepers moved in a few blocks away. The men who came from a faraway place offered the Haitian children cookies and other snacks. Sometimes they gave them a few dollars. But the price was high: The Sri Lankan peacekeepers wanted sex from girls and boys as young as 12. “I did not even have breasts,” said a girl, known as V01 — Victim No. 1. She told U.N. investigators that over the next three years, from ages 12 to 15, she had sex with nearly 50 peacekeepers. Justice for victims like V01 is rare. An Associated Press investigation of U.N. missions during the past 12 years found nearly 2,000 allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation by peacekeepers and other personnel around the world — signaling the crisis is much larger than previously known. More than 300 of the allegations involved children, the AP found, but only a fraction of alleged perpetrators served jail time.

But the proclamation had a familiar ring: More than a decade ago, the U.N. commissioned a report that promised to do much the same thing, yet most of the reforms never materialized. For two years after those promises were made, children in Haiti were passed around from soldier to soldier. And in the years since, peacekeepers have been accused of sexual abuse the world over. Haitian lawyer Mario Joseph has been trying to get compensation for victims of a deadly cholera strain linked to Nepalese peacekeepers that killed an estimated 10,000 people. Now, he is also trying to get child support for about a dozen Haitian women left pregnant by peacekeepers.

“Imagine if the U.N. was going to the United States and raping children and bringing cholera,” Joseph said in Port-au-Prince. “Human rights aren’t just for rich white people.” U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley want a review of all missions. With one stroke of a pen, Gov. Terry Branstad is poised to make Iowa one of the friendliest states for gun owners. Lawmakers have passed a bill that many say is the most comprehensive piece of legislation on gun rights the state has seen. The legislation would, among other things, allow citizens to use deadly force if they believe their lives are threatened and to sue local government officials if they think gun-free zones have violated their Second Amendment rights. The deadly force provision has raised fears that the bill would increase gun violence. State Sen. Nate Boulton, D, said state law already lets Iowans use deadly force if they are threatened at home or work, adding that a Stand Your Ground law could lead some to misunderstand when deadly force may be used. The legislation, which the governor has hinted he will sign, marks the end of a decades-long battle for a bill that does more than make incremental changes to state gun laws and would bring Iowa in line with more gun-friendly neighbors such as Missouri and Wisconsin, said Barry Snell, president of the Iowa Firearms Coalition. “Without exaggeration, House File 517 is the most monumental and sweeping piece of gun legislation in Iowa’s history,” Snell said. NHL PLAYOFFS Tired of rolling through the regular season and falling short in the playoffs, the Capitals went to great lengths to make sure their best players won’t be tired this time around. Alex Ovechkin saw the lowest ice time of his career, and Nicklas Backstrom the lowest since his rookie year. Braden Holtby played fewer minutes than he ever has as a starting goaltender in an 82-game season. Balancing out the minutes and workload was an organizational effort to gear up for the playoffs and give Washington its best chance to finally lift the Stanley Cup. “We tried different things,” Ovechkin said. “I think right now we’re in better shape than we were last year and mentallywise, as well, because you can see we have four lines who can create and four lines who can be out there and get the job done.” To prove the plan worked, the Capitals will have to get the job done against the Maple Leafs in the first round, starting tonight at Verizon Center, and advance past the second round for the first time in the Ovechkin era.

After averaging 21:18 on ice over his first 11 NHL seasons, Ovechkin played 18:22, reaching that average by ramping up over the course of the year. His 1,506 total minutes were the fewest he’s played in an 82-game season, and yet he played in every game. The Russian superstar had 14 points in his final 15 regularseason games and contributed big hits that knocked defenders out of two recent contests.

“He looks fresh, he looks fast and he looks like Alex,” coach Barry Trotz said. Ovechkin has also helped Backstrom and fellow linemate T.J. Oshie play better. At evenstrength and on the power play, the Capitals have the high-end skill to deserve their status as the favorite to emerge from the Eastern Conference. To do that they’ll need the best from Holtby, the reigning Vezina Trophy winner who started 63 games this season, three fewer than last year and nine fewer than 2014-15. Holtby faced 112 fewer shots, and less wear and tear could be the difference if the Capitals make an extended run. The Capitals were strong down the stretch, going 11-2-1 in their final 14 games, a stark contrast to their 7-5-4 finish last year before a second-round exit. Backstrom senses a good feeling around the locker room this year, which well-traveled Daniel Winnik believes is a product of momentum that can translate to the playoffs. “It matters how you play before the playoffs,” Winnik said. “I think Pittsburgh’s proved

ANALYSIS When this NBA season began, it was supposed to be a six-month buildup to a finals rubber match between the Warriors and Cavaliers. And, as the regular season closed Wednesday and the playoffs begin this weekend, those teams remain the favorites to make that feat happen. But a regular season expected to be boring because everyone knew who would end up in the finals has gotten an exciting boost because of the race for Most Valuable Player. LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, James Harden and Kawhi Leonard are all in the midst of perhaps the best seasons of their careers. It’s been arguably the best MVP race in league history, potentially surpassing the competition in 1962, when Bill Russell won the award ahead of Wilt Chamberlain, who averaged 50 points and 26 rebounds, and Oscar Robertson, who averaged a triple-double. After months of debate, The Washington Post has picked Leonard as its official choice for MVP. Yes. Leonard, not Harden or Westbrook, the names that have dominated this conversation for months. While those two and James are largely regular season designated hitters, contributing only on offense, Leonard remains the best perimeter defender in the league by leaps and bounds. That should count for something. So, too, should Leonard’s insane efficiency. He dominates the ball, entering Wednesday’s game at Utah with a 31.3 percent usage

but Tony Parker has plummeted in the point guard ranks. Pau Gasol has been rightly relegated to a reserve role in favor of Dewayne Dedmon. Despite all of that — plus a bench featuring Patty Mills, Gasol, David Lee and Manu Ginobili — San Antonio won more than 60 games and finished with the second-best record in the NBA. As of Wednesday morning, Leonard had led his roster to seven more wins than the Rockets and 14 more than the Thunder. Gio Gonzalez did not walk a batter Tuesday night. He retired 11 straight Cardinals to end his outing. He worked quickly, recovered from brief lapses and allowed one earned run in seven innings of an 8-3 victory. Combine Tuesday’s start with his first of the season, in which threw six scoreless innings, and Gonzalez’s 2017 line looks like this: 0.69 ERA, 13 hits in 13 innings, 13 strikeouts, one walk. He did this last year, too, teasing the Nationals with a few strong starts while showing signs of reform. Then, as the nights warmed and innings accumulated, he reverted. The lefty had a 1.86 ERA in his first eight starts last season, and walked a tolerable 13 men in 40 innings. In his last 24 starts, he had a 5.58 ERA with a strikeoutto-walk ratio of 2.84. (TWP)

He landed at American University, where he graduated with a degree in systems engineering and business administration. He was interested to see if he could build a food business around the laws of probability. Once you spin the wheel — actually, you press a button on the iPad, but whatever — you cobble together your 9-inch pie from a list of basic ingredients, including ham, bacon, anchovies, sausage and olives. Does the series look like what you imagined when you wrote the book? They cast the commander and his wife younger than they are in the book, so I think that increases the possibility for jealousy, competition, sexual tension. In the book, the wife wouldn’t be able to have children because of her age. But this one, she’s young, so you can imagine how conflicted she is about having a handmaid.

It also seemed like there’s a lot more cursing in the show than in the book. Oh, yeah, there’s a lot more cursing. I think that’s because there’s a lot more cursing in real life than there was when I wrote the book. So instead of making it a period piece, they made it now. Developing dystopia Margaret Atwood had a literal hand in adapting her ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ for Hulu When Canadian author Margaret Atwood stepped onto the set of the Hulu adaptation of her dystopian novel “The Handmaid’s Tale,” she was given a strange task: to hit lead actress Elisabeth Moss from behind with her hand. “They said, ‘We’re going to film that again, but this time hit her harder. Give her a real bop on the head,’ ” Atwood recalls, to which she wailed, “But what if I hurt her?” In her cameo, Atwood is one of the women indoctrinating Moss’ character, Offred, into being a handmaid — a woman forced into sexual servitude and made to bear children for infertile couples among society’s upper echelons. In Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel and the Hulu series (which premieres April 26), parts of America have become Gilead, a theocracy where women are no longer allowed to work or own property. (Atwood, Moss and others involved in the series will discuss the adaptation at a Smithsonian Associates event Wednesday.) We spoke with Atwood, 77, about Hulu’s series and how close the nightmare world of “The Handmaid’s Tale” is to becoming reality. SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS)

How does the Hulu series differ from the book? It builds out some of the characters that sort of disappear from view in the book, because the narrator doesn’t know what happens to them. Another difference is that, in the book, society is so segregated. They are shipping black people back to Africa, they are shipping Jews back to Israel. In both cases we suspect they are dumping them

The fact that the show feels so contemporary makes it more terrifying, like it could happen today. Back when I wrote the book, things like Tiananmen Square and the [Arab Spring] hadn’t happened, so we didn’t think of police shooting into a crowd of protesters as a possibility. But now it has [happened], so we added it. My rule for the book was, I didn’t put in anything that people hadn’t already done. And I think the series is following that rule, not putting in anything that is just a made-up thing. It’s all happened before. Is the U.S. on the road to becoming a place like Gilead? Well, let’s just say you’re not on the road that leads away from it. I think in some states you’re getting pretty close, but without the perks. By which I mean, in Gilead, if you’re a handmaid and you’re expected to produce babies for the state, at least you get three meals a day.

Andrew McMahon had to make peace with the city for his new album

MUSIC Andrew McMahon was chasing a ghost, and it led him back to New York City. “It was always an intense and exciting place to be,” says the California-based singer-songwriter, formerly of Something Corporate and Jack’s Mannequin, who now performs as Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness. His longtime plans to record an album there were thrust aside when, during a tour stop in 2005, he was diagnosed with cancer. “My relationship [with the city] changed quite a bit,” he says. “So it was a combination of this intense energy and a ghost memory following me around, but it felt like the time to make my way back.” More than a decade later, that return led to his sophomore Wilderness album, “Zombies on Broadway,” which McMahon, 34, recorded mostly in New York. Released in February, the album delivers the pulsating piano and intimate lyrics that are McMahon’s trademark, but “Zombies”

is full of technical experimentation and even a danceable song with spoken-word verses: “Brooklyn, You’re Killing Me” (“I keep waking up on fire beneath this low-rise second city that’s turning good men into liars,” he chants). “What I’m always trying to do with my songwriting is chart where I am and the moment in my life that I’m residing in,” McMahon says. “The underlying theme became reconciling this side of my nature that’s predisposed toward late nights and drinking too much and maybe having more fun than I’m supposed to for a man my age. The city brings that side of me to the surface. A lot of this record was about getting my head around that and trying to get it under control.” McMahon wrote much of “Zombies” while touring to promote his first, self-titled Wilderness album, when the single “Cecilia and the Satellite” — named for his daughter, born in 2014 — was ascending

His organization, the Dear Jack Foundation — which supports adolescents and young adults with cancer — will have a booth at all “Zombies” stops to swab people for the National Marrow Donor Program’s registry. “We’ve had more than 6,000 people stop by and do a cheek swab, and more than 60 have been told they’re a match for a cancer patient,” McMahon says. The past and present will collide when McMahon performs at the Fillmore on Friday: The setlist promises a “Zombies”heavy show, with Jack’s Mannequin and Something Corporate favorites sprinkled in. “I try, every tour, to one-up myself and transport the audience as much as possible,” he says. The lively performer’s signature moves include jumping off his piano, pounding the keys with his Chuck Taylors and crowdsurfing the room in a giant yellow inflatable duck. “Especially as global politics and the state of daily life has gotten so … just everyone on different pages, there’s a commitment to give people a space where they can step outside that for a second and feel a sense of magic,” he says. Lu Caverns is a special place, but Luray it’s not unique: Virginia is home to nearly 4,000 known caves, some of ne which are accessible to the general wh public. Finally take the plunge It’s time to listen to the beckoning highway signs and visit Luray Caverns DESTINATIONS It was a chilly, rainy Saturday when I asked my husband, Steve, if he wanted to go check out Luray Caverns. “Too cold, too wet,” he said, pulling a blanket over his head. Little did he know that I had gathered persuasive evidence from the website: The temperature in the cave always feels like it’s around 65 degrees, and it’s safe from precipitation, making it an ideal place to visit in bad weather. I was also trying to convince myself. Like many D.C.-area residents, I’d passed the signs

for Luray Caverns plenty of times while driving to some other, farther-flung place. This particular tourist attraction was always a little too out of the way for an impromptu side trip. But that rainy Saturday, I was determined to see some caves. I lured Steve out of bed with coffee, and two hours later, we arrived at what looked like a strip mall, albeit one that someone had dropped in the middle of nowhere. “Where are the caverns?” Steve said. We had to walk past a collection of unrelated attractions

— including a ropes course, a hedge maze and a museum of classic cars — to find the caverns’ entrance, housed in a building with an architectural style reminiscent of a Jersey Turnpike rest stop. Built to entice road trippers to stop for a day or more, the whole Luray Caverns enterprise has been owned by the same family for 112 years. Patriarch Theodore Clay Northcott originally used the cool air of the caverns to create what he called the first air-conditioned building in the world — a sanatorium called Limair. The sanatorium

has since burned down, but the family’s small empire has grown over the years to include the aforementioned side attractions, plus two motels and a golf course. These days, a ticket to tour the caverns also includes access to the adjacent toy and antique car museums. “You’re in luck: The next tour is about to start,” said a cheery woman in khaki pants who herded us through a doorway with a small staircase, like it was an ordinary basement. But as we walked down the stairs, the view widened until we found

ourselves at the mouth of an enormous cave, decorated lavishly with curtains and columns of sepia-toned stone. Virginia, we later learned, is riddled with underground chambers like Luray. In fact, there are nearly 4,000 caves in the state, though most are on private property and accessible only to spelunkers with the training and fortitude to wiggle through tiny, dark holes in the ground. Luray, on the other hand, is a hit with tourists because it’s conveniently paved and well lit — a fact emphasized by our tour guide. “All 748 of our lights are on timers. I do not want to leave anyone behind in cave darkness. So please stay with the group at all times,” she said, with the highlow cadence of a flight attendant giving a safety briefing. Thus began our tour of the

cave, a leisurely, hour-long walk on a winding path through what was once an ancient sea, our guide explained. When the water drained, it formed caverns that were decorated by the slow drip of water through layers of limestone and clay. Calcite-rich drips from the ceiling become stalactites, drips on the floor accumulated into stalagmites — and when the two met in the middle, they created enormous columns of stone. Our tour guide pointed out one such formation, a 500-foot pillar called Pluto’s Ghost. “You have to remember that when people first explored these caverns, they only had flickering candles or gas lamps,” the guide explained, adding that the formation was named after the lord of the underworld from Roman myth, not Disney’s cartoon dog. “They thought it was following them.” Many of the Luray’s rock formations have even more poetic names. Among them is Saracen’s Tent, a drapery of nearly paper-thin stone that formed when mineral-bearing water dripped down the ceiling’s serrated incline. Then there was the most beautiful sight of the tour: the perfectly still Dream Lake, which reflects the enormous stalactites hanging above, making it look much deeper than it is. Near the end of the tour, we

entered a large, open part of the cave called the Cathedral, where, in 1954, a man named Leland Sprinkle installed an electric church organ and wired it up to tiny hammers that bang on stalagmites and stalactites to produce different notes. Our tour guide pressed a button to make the organ play a Lutheran hymn. “Isn’t this the best rock music you’ve ever heard?” she asked, a pun that made the group groan. A short walk later, we were back at the staircase where we had started. Outside, the air had warmed and the rain had stopped. We moved on to our next stop: the Garden Maze. Made up of an acre of 8-foot-tall evergreens, this labyrinth proved to be pretty difficult. After about 15 minutes of wrong turns and dead ends, Steve and I were glad to stumble upon a raised platform that provided an elevated view of the maze and helped us find the way out. It was clear from our adventures above and below ground that Luray was certainly worth its own trip. But after hours of wandering, we were glad to have a GPS to take us directly home.

Pittsburgh’s got street arts Walk this way to find some of the coolest, weirdest public art in Steel City

When you’ve lived in Smithsonian-packed D.C., it’s easy to get frustrated when museums in other cities expect you to cough up some cash to see some fossils or spaceships or art. Just because free isn’t the norm in other places, though, doesn’t mean that you have to cough up some cash to see a masterpiece — in Pittsburgh, they bring the masterpiece to you. ¶ “People have been investing in art in public spaces here for over 100 years,” says Renee Piechocki, director of Pittsburgh’s Office of Public Art. “It’s part RENEE ROSENSTEEL

of that ‘city beautiful’ movement — you made your cities beautiful to make them more hospitable and show pride in them. That tradition has always been a part of what happens here.” ¶ Pittsburgh has a massive public art presence, and it’s not just generals on horses. Walking through the city, you might see “a sound piece, a light piece, a project that uses community content. That’s

Triple Crossing was born as many breweries are: Friends Adam Worcester and Jeremy Wirtes were homebrewing when they had an idea. “You have a couple of drinks one night and say, ‘We should totally open up our own brewery,’ ” Worcester says. Shortly after, Scott Jones, who grew up in Richmond with Worcester, called to tell him about his new kegerator. Jones had dreamed of opening a bar, so Worcester invited Jones to get drinks with him and Wirtes. All three were into the Northeast style of super-hoppy, juicy, hazy beers. “At the time, that scene wasn’t here in Richmond so we felt we’d be doing something new,” Worcester says. In April 2014, the trio opened Triple Crossing Brewing in a small space in downtown Richmond. Last December, Triple Crossing expanded to add a much

Though Wirtes brews a variety of styles, hoppy beers — especially low-alcohol session ales — remain Triple Crossing’s specialty. “We like to do the beers people want to sit down and drink more than one of,” Worcester says, citing their hoppy golden ale, pilsner and English bitter. “We do have the hop bombs — those are our favorites — but we also want to have stuff for people who are not into that style.” The next frontier for Triple Crossing is sours, like Waxing Poetic, a tart and fruity Berliner weisse. “It’s a passion project for us,” Jones says. “There’s so many ways it can go.”

RICHMOND When An Bui opened his Vietnamese restaurant Mekong in a Richmond strip mall in 1995, he served only wine and no beer. “There was no beer scene,” Bui says, noting that the city had a brewpub, Legend Brewing, but that was basically it. Two years later, Mekong dumped the wine and started focusing on beer. “It was just a gut feel,” Bui says. “We started getting the Belgian stuff in, started giving free tastings to people, built it one person at a time. Eventually, we had a small beer community of supporters.” He hosted homebrewing meetings at Mekong to get people into brewing. “If other cities can do this, why can’t Richmond have a beer scene?” Bui recalls thinking. Today, Richmond has more than 20 breweries — including California craft behemoth Stone Brewing’s new East Coast facility and Bui’s own The Answer Brewpub — and the number keeps growing, thanks in part to a 2012 Virginia Senate bill that allows breweries to sell their beers for on-site consumption. “There’s been an explosion of craft brewing in Richmond,” says Greg Engert, beer director for Neighborhood Restaurant Group, which owns D.C.’s ChurchKey. “The three brewers from Richmond that I think are unbelievable and really just extraordinarily exceptional [are] The Veil, The Answer and Triple Crossing.” If you’re a craft beer fan in D.C., you’ve had the opportunity to try all three — Engert often pours their brews from his taps — but since beer tastes better from the source, here’s a guide to three of Richmond’s best breweries.

larger brewhouse in the city’s Fulton neighborhood, about a mile from Stone Brewing’s new space. (The two breweries recently teamed up on a double IPA called Fulton Rising — a nod to the developing area they share.) “[The downtown location] allowed us to start off real small, test out these recipes, see how

we felt they did and how people responded to them,” Worcester says. Triple Crossing began canning beers using a mobile canner last fall, starting with flagship IPA Falcon Smash (the name is a “Super Smash Bros.” reference, and the label notes that the beer pairs well with Nintendo 64) and

The Veil Brewing Co. has three owners, but everything — the beers, the cartoon can labels, the sophisticated taproom, even their social media presence — is head brewer and co-owner Matt Tarpey’s vision. “I make the beers that I prefer to drink,” he says, “and I cross my fingers that everybody else likes them too.” When The Veil first opened its doors last April, customers were already waiting in line to buy cans. These days, there’s still a line that stretches dozens (and dozens) of people deep for every Tuesday can release. “It’s fun, it’s bewildering, it’s humbling,” says co-owner Dave Michelow, who handles the business side with co-owner Dustin Durrance. Michelow credits the hype behind Tarpey’s beer — most often soft, juicy and hazy IPAs and double IPAs like Master Shredder and Crucial CONTINUED ON PAGE T8

Taunt — for the constant lines. Fans trade Veil beers across the country, and ratebeer.com recently ranked it the No. 3 new brewery in the world. Though Tarpey previously worked at acclaimed Vermont breweries Hill Farmstead and The Alchemist (and interned at Belgium’s iconic Cantillon), this is his first head brewing job. Tarpey used to sing in metal bands and only got into brewing on a lark when he started volunteering at O’Connor Brewing in Norfolk, Va. Tarpey recalls his thought process at the time: “I like beer, I don’t know much about brewing, it seems like it would be cool if I volunteered — maybe I’ll get some free beer out of it. Once I was there, I fell in love.” Walk into The Veil on a random day and there’s a chance you may see only IPAs (though of the 120

or so beers The Veil has brewed in its first year, there have been plenty of sours and stouts — including one, Hornswoggler, that they sometimes brew with Oreostyle cookies). “For us, it’s important to create a beer that is flavorful, aromatic, complex, has tons of hop character but is also approachable,” Tarpey says. “We try to cut back on the bitterness as much as possible because there’s a lot of people when they think hoppy beer or IPA, they think bitter. They don’t think this beer is going to taste like a blend of orange juice and grapefruit juice.”

best craft beer bar. Opening a brewery “was never my thinking,” Bui says, but a space opened up a few doors down from Mekong and he thought, “maybe it’s the time.” He was driven by the prospect of drinking fresh hoppy beers. “When beer is delivered, it’s 2 to

3 weeks old by the time it gets to us,” Bui says. “How great would it be to taste fresh beer off the tank?” So he founded The Answer, a small, bare-bones brewpub with 50-plus taps, a rotating series of beers from head brewer Brandon Tolbert, a stage for live music and

a small menu of Vietnamese food. “We make a lot of IPA,” where freshness is paramount, Bui says. “Then we have some fruity [sour] beer [and] we have some stout where we play with adjuncts.” The Answer developed a process called The Andall, similar to Dogfish Head’s Randall, that involves infusing beers with ingredients like coffee, peanut butter cups, chilies and fruit, resulting in big, bold flavors. Beers are available to-go in growlers or crowlers (32-ounce cans of fresh draft beer); Bui doesn’t anticipate producing enough beer to start canning or bottling anytime soon. “I’m just trying to enjoy the moment that we have here,” Bui says. “So many breweries, so many awesome beers. Let’s podcast about sex How does a podcast like yours adapt to the current political climate? Krystyna Hutchinson: One of the things that we’ve been hearing a lot is, “I wish you guys would stop talking about politics; I listen to this show to escape that,” which is a really frustrating request. I would love to be able to not talk about politics. But as long as there are laws associated with my vagina, we’re not going to shut up about it. While all that’s exciting, I still love me some good-ol’ missionary.

Tell me about the book: It’s called “F*cked: Being Sexually Explorative and Self-Confident in a World That’s Screwed.”

Fisher: My part is about selfconfidence and getting rid of shame. Krystyna’s is more about taboos, sexuality and how to talk to your partner about things that are uncomfortable. Hutchinson: We’ve experienced so much because of the podcast. It feels like now we have this unique insight into what people are thinking, how they view their own sexuality and the sexuality of others.

STAGE For a story that takes place in the future, sometimes it’s helpful to look to how the past looked at the future. That seems confusing, but for Pointless Theatre’s newest production, “.d0t :: a Rotoplastic Ballet,” it made sense. The show “takes place in a world far removed — but not quite far removed — from ours, where machines have almost entirely taken over, except for one last human,” says Navid Azeez, who plays NAVI, the human, and is one of the writers and composers of the multimedia musical. “The artificial intelligence who runs the city keeps one human alive, because that human controls the Pulse, which is the rhythmic energy which keeps the city coordinated. Throughout

the course of the show, one of the robots in the system glitches out and essentially evolves to be able to replace me.” In addition to playing the only human in the robotic world, Azeez is the only actor in the show — the robots are played by puppets. The puppets — handled by eight puppeteers — do not have the sleek, glossy, iPhonesque look one might expect of our future robot overlords. Instead, they look like paper dolls, capable of only simple movements. “We kind of went the opposite of high-tech,” says Patti Kalil, who co-wrote the show and handled the puppet design. The team behind the show was inspired by the Italian futurist movement of the 1920s, particularly the brightly colored, almost cartoon-y work of artist Fortunato Depero. “Instead of going the way of highly mechanical and sophisticated puppets, we went with a different aesthetic — very geometric, very simple in their shapes and

mechanisms,” Kalil says. The look of the show was also grounded in toy theater (think of the miniaturized puppet theater from kindergarten). “Instead of it being a box that’s maybe 3 by 4 feet that’s performed at a library or for schools, we’re taking it to [the] Flashpoint [theater] and making it like a human-scaled version of toy theater,” Kalil says. “It’s almost like a pop-up storybook, but performed live.” The decidedly inhuman quality of the puppets echoes “Ballet’s” themes of isolation and loneliness. Azeez’s presence as the only three-dimensional thing in a twodimensional world lends itself well to the story. “Ultimately, if I had to interact with real people, it would detract from the story we are trying to tell,” Azeez says. Classical dance music How Reed Mathis used improv to reimagine the work of Beethoven

MUSIC Bassist Reed Mathis wants to make you dance to Beethoven — and he doesn’t mean the cheesy disco hit “A Fifth of Beethoven.” With his new band, Electric Beethoven, Mathis has reimagined Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 and Symphony No. 6 as improvised dance music for electric guitar, bass, keys and drums. “Dancing is the audience’s version of improvising,” Mathis says. “When they’re dancing, they’re participating, they’re not doing a routine, they’re streamof-consciousness moving, which is what we’re doing.” Ahead of Electric Beethoven’s show opening for funk band The Motet at 9:30 Club on Friday, Mathis walked us through how he turned the two symphonies into last year’s album “Beathoven.”

Step 1: Zoom out. The first thing Mathis did was try to distill pieces that were written for a full orchestra into basic sheet music that would work for any instrument. “I just zoomed out and saw what was the meta version, the thing that could take any shape,” Mathis says. “None of the instruments have parts, nobody has a script. All we have is Beethoven’s narrative.”

Bassist Reed Mathis turned two of Beethoven’s symphonies into an album called “Beathoven.”

In order to get a sense of what the works would sound like in their new form, Mathis made a recording of himself playing the symphonies on a variety of different instruments. “I did it with no plan as to what instrument would play what part and wasn’t trying to have it sound good,” he says. “I was genuinely curious what would happen.”

McConnell and Mike Gordon, keyboardist Marco Benevento and drummer Joe Russo — and set up recording sessions in groups of three. “I selected people that have no background in classical music so that they would not come at it with any conclusions,” Mathis says. “I didn’t even always tell them what we would be playing. I didn’t want them to become actors in the Beethoven play.” Using his recording and very basic sheet music, they’d improvise, with Mathis acting as a conductor of sorts.

Step 4: Put it together. After the recording sessions, Mathis started editing. Then he strapped on his bass and played over those recordings. “I did one take over the whole thing as if it was an electric bass concerto,” he says. Though he did some overdubs, Mathis says “90 percent

of what you hear from all of the instruments is one take.”

Step 5: Take it on the road. The real fun began when he turned Electric Beethoven into a touring band featuring Jay Lane on drums, Todd Stoops on keyboards and Clay Welch on guitar. You won’t hear anything close to note-for-note re-creations of the “Beathoven” album. “We just count off the first song and start,” he says. “We don’t know the length of the piece. We’re improvising from the first note. MUSIC Matthew Healy, frontman of the English rock band The 1975, remembers how impactful his first major concert was when he was just 8 years old. It was Michael Jackson, and Healy remembers the night vividly. “It kind of solidified he was a pantheon of culture, and that he was larger than life, and that he was bigger than reality,” Healy says. “That moment of him being there was like one of the most powerful things for me as a young person.” Healy, 28, aims to evoke that feeling for fans when they see The 1975 on its latest arena tour, which launched this week. The genre-bending band is riding high on the success of last year’s “I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It” — its

sophomore album that debuted at No. 1 in both the United States and the United Kingdom. It was named Rolling Stone’s No. 1 pop album of 2016 and earned a Grammy nomination for Healy for his art direction. The band won Best British Group at this year’s BRIT Awards. Healy says the success comes from the strong brotherhood within the group, which is based in Manchester.

“We’ve just grown up but we kind of [grew] up in the same room,” Healy says of the band, which includes guitarist Adam Hann, drummer George Daniel and bassist Ross MacDonald. “I don’t know anybody who’s spent real time with their siblings as I’ve spent with the band. … Since age 13, we’ve seen each other practically every day.” The band has been lauded for its distinctive sound, a blend of

rock, pop, R&B, electronic and other genres. Healy says that uniqueness hurt the group earlier in its career. “The reason we couldn’t get signed by a major label in 2010 was the same was reason we got big in 2013,” he recalls. “They came to our rehearsal room and said, ‘Well, every song sounds different.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s the point.’ ” The tour includes more than 30 shows through June, with stops in Austin, Texas; Los Angeles; Salt Lake City; Detroit; and New York City, with a show at Madison Square Garden on June 1. Healy, whose parents are actors Denise Welch and Tim Healy, says he always knew he’d have a career in music. “My parents did art for a living; therefore, being creative and doing something that you wanted to do was just automatically endorsed,” he says. “Music was my passion and my dad told me I could do what I wanted.” MESFIN FEKADU (AP)

Charlie Murphy dies after battling leukemia Charlie Murphy, older brother of Eddie Murphy and a stand-up comic and performer in his own right, died on Wednesday in New York of leukemia, according to his representative, Domenick Nati. He was 57. Murphy was known for his appearances on “Chappelle’s Show” on Comedy Central, where he recounted stories of crossing paths with superstar entertainers including Prince and Rick James in the recurring sketch “Charlie Murphy’s True Hollywood Stories.” He also collaborated with writing films in which his brother starred, “Norbit” and “Vampire in Brooklyn.” Murphy’s feature films include “Our Family Wedding,” “King’s Ransom” and “CB4.” (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)
