Rescuing cat owners from trees apparently is routine in Topeka Firefighters in Topeka, Kan., rescued a cat from a tree. They also rescued its owner after she scaled the tree to fetch her cat. A fire department shift commander said the woman and the cat were 16 feet up in a large tree when they were plucked out Wednesday. And, he said, that kind of dual rescue isn’t uncommon in Topeka. Bei Bei weaned too soon? THE DISTRICT The panda cam isn’t always just a cute way to passively pass time. It can help transform panda enthusiasts into panda activists. Longtime viewer J.J. Medusa has monitored the video feed of the pandas at the National Zoo for years, getting to know the personalities of the pandas and the bonds between them. And Medusa, a D.C. resident, said there is something amiss with the zoo’s youngest panda, Bei Bei, and his mother, Mei Xiang. Medusa said thousands of other spectators agree with her, pointing to more than 2,500 signatures on a change.org petition she started last month asking the zoo to reunite mother and son. But do these vigilant panda loyalists know better than the zookeepers, who say everything is fine? Zookeepers weaned Bei Bei, who was born Aug. 22, 2015, from his mother in March. Pandas are solitary animals, and cubs typically separate from their mothers at about 18 months. Zookeepers said that nothing is awry, and that while there have been “some

She said Bei Bei used to be playful, but now mopes around. “The two were forcibly separated one week ago and have been vocalizing, pacing, not eating and visibly stressed,” Medusa wrote in the petition. “They have been calling to each other and literally climbing walls (and

Bei Bei, she said, was ready for the process and has acted as expected. If they wait too long, she said, an antagonistic relationship between mother and cub could develop. “We are very pleased with how everything went. Mei Xiang and Bei Bei are behaving as we expected, just as giant pandas are expected,” Smith said. Smith said the zoo received the petition but has no plans to reunite the pandas. She said the two adult pandas at the zoo, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, may be acting restless and making noises because it is mating season. Medusa visited the pandas in person last month, saying the joyful panda cub she had gotten to know on the panda cam acted different and was making “horrible noises” as the cub stood by a wall separating him and his mother. “I went to the zoo, and it was probably the most horrible thing I ever experienced,” she said. 2016 fatal overdoses in Va.: 1,420 Health commissioner warns opioid epidemic has not yet peaked VIRGINIA Fatal drug overdoses shot up 38 percent in Virginia between 2015 and 2016, an alarming jump that state health officials attribute to abuse of synthetic opioids, heroin and prescription fentanyl. A new report from the state’s medical examiner found an even bigger increase — 175 percent

— in deaths from several varieties of fentanyl, a pain medication significantly more potent than morphine. At least 1,420 people died in Virginia last year from drug overdoses, the fourth year that drugs have outpaced motor vehicle accidents and gun-related incidents as the leading cause of unnatural death. The Virginia Department of Health warned that may be understating the results, because the cause of death has not yet been certified

for another 60 cases from 2016. The situation is likely to get worse before it gets better, said Virginia State Health Commissioner Marissa Levine, who last November classified opioid addiction as an epidemic and declared a public health emergency. “I don’t know when we’ll see a peak in deaths,” Levine said Thursday. “It’s not just heroin causing people to die. It’s fentanyl and synthetic fentanyl with different potencies. We’re now seeing Carfentanil [a drug 100 times

more potent than fentanyl, used to tranquilize elephants]. Someone who’s getting heroin laced with Carfentanil could die easily.” The General Assembly this year passed four bills that legalize needle-exchange programs, because intravenous drug users are fueling a rise in hepatitis C and HIV rates; initiatives to increase access to naloxone; changes to opioid prescription policies; and services for infants exposed to opioids in utero.

‘Mother of all bombs’ dropped in Afghanistan AFGHANISTAN U.S. forces in Afghanistan on Thursday struck an Islamic State tunnel complex in eastern Afghanistan with “the mother of all bombs,” the largest non-nuclear weapon ever used in combat by the U.S. military, Pentagon officials said. The Pentagon said it had no early estimate of deaths or damage caused by its attack, which President Trump called a “very, very successful mission.” The U.S. military headquarters in Kabul said in a statement that the bomb, known officially as a GBU-43B, or massive ordnance air blast weapon, was dropped at 7:32 p.m. local time Thursday on a tunnel complex in Achin district of Nangarhar province, where the Afghan affiliate of ISIS has been operating. The target was close to the Pakistani border. The U.S. estimates 600 to 800 ISIS fighters are present in Afghanistan, mostly in Nangarhar. The U.S. has concentrated on combatting them while supporting Afghan forces battling the Taliban. When the GBU-43B was developed in the early 2000s, the Pentagon did a formal review of legal justification for its combat use, and concluded that it could

added: “It is expected that the weapon will have a substantial psychological effect on those who witness its use.” Army Gen. John W. Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said in a written statement that the strike was designed to minimize the risk to Afghan and U.S. forces conducting clearing operations in the Achin area “while maximizing the destruction” of ISIS. “This is the right munition to reduce these obstacles and maintain the momentum of our offensive against [ISIS],” he added. Ismail Shinwari, the governor of Achin district, said the U.S. attack was carried out in a remote mountainous area with no civilian homes nearby and that there had been no reports of injured civilians. ‘Friendly fire’ in Syria kills 18 U.S.-allied forces Aircraft from the U.S.-led coalition accidentally bombed friendly Syrian forces fighting the Islamic State in northern Syria on Tuesday, killing 18, the Pentagon said Thursday. The bombing marks the worst confirmed friendly-fire incident in the nearly 3-year-old war against the terrorist group. The coalition said in a statement that the airstrike was requested by “partnered forces” south of ISIS’ Tabqa stronghold, near the extremists’ de facto capital, Raqqa. The forces accidentally targeted a group of Kurdish and Arab fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF. The partnered forces believed that the SDF’s position belonged to ISIS, the statement said, but those forces gave coalition aircraft the wrong coordinates, U.S. Central Command said. Several nations have lent air power to the U.S.-led coalition to defeat ISIS. It was not clear which air force was behind the strike. “The general leadership of SDF in coordination with international coalition will investigate the reasons behind the accident in order to prevent it happening again,” the SDF General Command said in a statement Thursday. The SDF-linked Hawar News Agency reported that the group was holding funerals for 17 of its fighters in the border town of Tal al-Abyad, although it did not link them to the strike. United passenger will ‘probably’ sue COURTS The attorney representing the man who was dragged off a United Airlines flight Sunday said it’s likely his client will sue the company, saying that United has bullied passengers “for far too long.” “Will there be a lawsuit? Yeah, probably,” Thomas Demetrio, an attorney representing David Dao, said at a Thursday morning news conference in Chicago. Demetrio said “unreasonable force and violence” were used against his client. Dao’s daughter, Crystal Pepper, said the family was “horrified and shocked” at seeing the video of the incident. Dao, 69, was discharged from a hospital late Wednesday and suffered a broken nose and a

serious concussion, his attorney said. Demetrio said Dao also lost two front teeth and will undergo reconstructive surgery. The news conference came a day after United chief Oscar Munoz publicly apologized for the incident and said he felt “shame” after viewing the video. Asked what he thought of Munoz’s apology, Demetrio said it sounded “staged.” He said neither he nor Dao had heard from anyone at United. Demetrio added later that the family accepted Munoz’s televised apology “with gratitude.” United Airlines issued another apology after the news conference, saying, “We remain steadfast in our commitment to make this right.” (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

She was 65. The body of Abdus-Salaam, a native of Washington, D.C., was found fully clothed in the river in Upper Manhattan at 1:45 p.m., a day after her husband reported her missing, according to New York police. In January, John Wall declared his vision for the season: reaching the conference finals.

3 THINGS TO WATCH

38 years in the making Wizards enter first-round series vs. Hawks expecting to make deepest run since 1979 NBA PLAYOFFS The Wizards enter the NBA playoffs with two things the franchise hasn’t had in nearly four decades: home-court advantage in the first round and expectations to make a deep playoff run. “I see ourselves getting to the Eastern Conference finals,” AllStar point guard John Wall said on TNT way back in January. “That’s our goal.” For the first time in decades, that seems realistic. Washington’s 49 regular-season wins are the most the franchise has had since the 1978-79 season. Even members of that conference championship club have a hard time believing that no Washington team since has reached the 50-win mark. “I would’ve thought that they would’ve won 50 games but also a championship by now,” Elvin Hayes, the Hall of Fame forward who played for the Bullets from 1972 to 1981, told The Washington Post. While the Wizards fell one

game shy of winning 50 games — something the Spurs (61-21) just did for the 18th straight season — they won their division and earned home-court advantage in their opening playoff series. Washington hadn’t achieved either of those things since 1979. Before missing the playoffs last season, a low point that ultimately led to coach Randy Wittman’s exit, the Wizards had advanced to the conference semifinals in back-to-back years. Entering their first postseason under coach Scott Brooks, the team is looking to go further. Since 2000, every team in the East except the Wizards and Hornets has advanced past the second round of the playoffs at least once. According to FiveThirtyEight, the Wizards have a 38 percent chance to make the conference finals, a 22 percent chance to make the NBA Finals and a 4 percent chance to win it all — better odds than the analytics website gives the reigning NBA

champion Cavaliers. The Wizards have even found an unlikely bandwagon jumper. Charles Barkley said this week that LeBron James and the Cavaliers would be happy to dodge a second-round matchup with the Wizards. “Really!? You think the Cavaliers are worried about the Washington Wizards?” co-host Kenny Smith pressed Barkley on Monday’s TNT broadcast. “I’m saying this,” Barkley said.

“The only team in my opinion who [has the] confidence to beat the Cavaliers is the Wizards.” The Cavaliers aren’t likely intimidated by the Wizards, whom they knocked out of the first round three years in a row (2006-08) and beat in two of three meetings this season. After resting starters down the stretch, Cleveland dropped to No. 2 in the East. The fourth-seeded Wizards will face the No. 1 Celtics if both of them win their first-round series. Barkley isn’t Washington’s only believer. Former Bullets swingman Kevin Grevey said this year’s team reminds him of the championship-caliber teams he was a part in the late ’70s. “I’m convinced now that the fans now believe in this team,” Grevey told The Washington Post. “Everywhere I go they always ask me, ‘Kevin, how about your team? How about those Wizards?’ “So it’s exciting for a former player who has played in this town and who loves this city and loves their team, to see them doing so well. ... We’re built for the playoffs. We’re built for a long run.” JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

Key factors in Round 1 The fourth-seeded Wizards were 3-1 against the Hawks this year. But Atlanta, which recently came back from a 26-point deficit to beat the Cavs at full strength, won’t go down easily. GABE HIATT (EXPRESSS)

3 Youth in the backcourt John Wall, 26, and Bradley Beal, 23, will match up with Atlanta’s Dennis Schroder, 23, and Tim Hardaway Jr., 25, who have combined to average 32.4 points.

2 Rediscover defense Since March 1, Washington ranks 30th in defensive rating, allowing 111.4 points per 100 possessions. Atlanta ranks fifth (102.9) but is last in offensive rating (101.8).

1 Playoff Dwight Dwight Howard, 31, isn’t the two-way behemoth he was in Orlando. But he was still fifth in the NBA in rebounding (12.7 per game) and averaged 14.8 boards vs. the Wizards.

Smiling through struggles Nationals relievers stay positive despite their worrisome early play

Boswell is back on the back line for D.C. United JONATHAN NEWTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MLB When Mike Maddux walked into the visitors’ clubhouse at Philadelphia last Friday, he couldn’t understand why his entire pitching staff giggled. The usual hitter footage was on the television screen at the front of the room. His staple Las Vegas Baseball Academy sweatshirt had no remnants of breakfast down its front. “I guess the joke’s on me,” Maddux said. “Actually Mad Dog,” Shawn Kelley said, “the joke is literally on us.” Then the pitching coach noticed the logo on the players’ navy blue T-shirts: Las Vegas Baseball Academy, just like the one on his favorite sweatshirt. The pitchers roared with laughter. Maddux’s meetings are a staple of each series, a time for him to review the opposing lineup, and pass on scouting reports. But there is only so much he can pass along in meetings. Behind the laughs sits an unsettling early April reality. Washington’s bullpen entered Thursday with the second-highest ERA (6.75) in the NL. It has allowed nine home runs in 291/3 innings. Opponents have a .956 OPS against Nationals relievers, third-highest in the majors. Every one of the team’s relievers who has thrown more than

two innings has allowed at least two runs. Maddux attributed some of the early struggles to early excitement, pointing out the transition from spring training to the regular season takes time. “The guys have a little more adrenaline,” he said. “In due time, it’s going to iron itself out.” So far, everyone from veteran Joe Blanton to attack-first Sammy Solis has struggled with home runs, walks or both. “If we pitch to not walk people, we’re going to walk people,” Maddux said. “We pitch aggressively, we pitch to get guys out. We don’t pitch to the negative.” Positivity is a part of this bullpen, which seems to hatch

endless T-shirt ideas during the innings spent sitting together. The relievers also have T-shirts with a three-fingered hand on the back — a tribute to bullpen coach Dan Firova, who lost a finger in an accident in high school, and is a good sport about it all. He became bullpen coach last year, when a new wave of relievers emerged, including Kelley, Oliver Perez, Solis and Blake Treinen. “We understand the season, guys will have ups and downs,” Perez said. “We stay together.” Some will cringe at the notion that bullpen chemistry means anything in the face of a poor start. But the Nats won’t be able to overhaul the back-end staff

entirely, and 10 days isn’t a long enough period to judge it. Perhaps they can add at the trade deadline, but for now, the Nationals are betting on this group to grow. Solis, who has already had to answer questions about poor outings and defend the talent in the bullpen, has a particular affinity for one recent addition to the Tshirt collection. He has worn it so often that the light-gray shirt with the red writing is already shrinking in the wash. The shirt with the image of the three-fingered hand that relievers wave when a teammate homers also has a message on the front: “Relievers are people too.” CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

MLS For three weeks, Bobby Boswell found himself in an unusual and uncomfortable position: on D.C. United’s bench. The veteran center back lost his starting job to Sean Franklin and relinquished the captaincy to Steve Birnbaum. During the preseason, Boswell, 34, and coach Ben Olsen had discussed a reduced role. In need of stronger personality and presence in the lineup after opening with a draw and two losses, Olsen put Boswell back in the starting lineup, where he will lead the defense at the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night (7:30, NewsChannel 8). Since the switch, United has claimed 2-1 wins over Philadelphia and NYCFC. Boswell’s teammates said the improvement is due to overall performance more than the personnel change, but there’s no denying his contributions. “I’ve never really sat at any level,” Boswell said. “You think about stuff like that when you are on the bench. ... I always thought I would win out eventually.” Olsen never doubted Boswell accepting an uncertain role. They were teammates with United from 2005 to 2007. Boswell then spent six years in Houston before Olsen said the team targeted him when it began rebuilding in the winter of 2013. “He’s been an absolute pro,” Olsen said. “Bobby really doesn’t know any other way.” STEVEN GOFF (TWP)

Cat Soulmate

I

have been wanting a pet for almost two years now, but I always thought I was a dog person since I have never had a cat before. However, cats are best for the working girl lifestyle, so I had to weigh my options. I have had mixed experiences with cats – in part because their body language is much different than dogs; I think some negative experiences may have been a product of miscommunication. It seems fairly trendy to have a cat especially if you live in a city so I have become acquainted with a number of my friend’s cats. These experiences certainly upped my desire to have one of my own and also proved the feasibility of working full time and taking in an animal. But how do you pick the right cat though? I fall in love with dogs every day, but I feared I wouldn’t know it if I connected with a cat. Would a cat destroy my house (I’ve heard of many cats from hell ripping up couches and carpeting)? As I started looking into adoption, I still had many questions, fears, and concerns about how a new furry friend might fit into my lifestyle or alter my routines. Then a fateful opportunity came to light. A friend of a friend was going out of town for

a month and needed someone to watch her cat. It was the perfect opportunity to have a trial run with a feline. I could get the answers to my questions without making a huge commitment up front. Three days in, I fell in love with the cat (his name is Rajah). Knowing I was sure it was time to adopt one of my own, I got pre-approved with a ton of rescue groups so I could bring a kitty home pretty much as soon as Raj’s owner picked him up. I was almost afraid to be in an empty apartment again without a furry friend to keep me company. It was so much fun coming home to meows and cuddles. I met with a few cats in foster care. I was very close to adopting, but couldn’t stop comparing the other potential adoptees to Rajah, the cat who has been living with me all of January. He’s got all the attributes I could want in a cat (no scratching, good litter habits, affectionate and loving, decently dog friendly, and adorable). When the owner got back, it made it through the grapevine that I was in love with her cat and was interested in keeping him. It turned out she was thinking of re-homing him due to some career changes. So she offered to give him to me.

I was thrilled. It all fell into place at the right time and with the right cat. It all felt meant to be, he is the perfect match for me and now he has a definite forever home! The whole experience taught me several lessons on cat ownership in an apartment. Here are a few quick tips:

Before You Consider Adopting an Animal be Familiar with Your Apartment’s Pet Policy Some apartments have breed restrictions on dogs or limit pets to one per household. Read up on your lease. Having a new, fluffy tenant also may incur a monthly fee (pet rent) AND/OR a deposit to cover potential damages – it’s important to consider the financial implications of adopting a pet. In addition to apartment or condo fees related to having a pet, pets require supplies, food, in a cat’s case, litter, and yearly vet appointments. Be sure to consider these costs and responsibilities.

Use Flushable Litter I was concerned having a cat might cause my apartment to get smelly. Not so! There’s World’s Best Litter which is biodegradable and thus flushable. Use this so you don’t have

Located in the historic district of downtown Frederick, Sinclair Way is conveniently located between West Patrick and West South Streets. Residents enjoy the ease of access to work, schools, local shopping, restaurants and more.

to scoop litter from box to trash – just flush it away. It makes it easier to scoop litter twice per day and keep my apartment smelling nice. I also recommend using companies like Chewy to order litter and food for your pet and get it delivered right at your door – there’s no reason to lug pet supplies around the city if you don’t have to.

If You Are New to Cats, Learn Their Body Language You are about to be living in close quarters with a critter, so you need to learn to understand them. The Jackson Galaxy videos are great for this! Or read a book. There are plenty of great titles on how to build a relationship with cats and how to take proper care of one. Like with any other major commitment, don’t forget to do your research. Be sure you understand what is required of you as the owner of your pet before adopting an animal and if you are in the market for a new pet and a new apartment, Apartment Showcase can help you find pet friendly places to live! ■ By Elaina H. for ApartmentShowcase Photo: Mohamed Aymen Bettaieb via Flickr Creative Commons

Still fast, still furious The franchise’s eighth film has all the action, but it’s starting to run out of gas FILM REVIEW “The Fate of the Furious” doesn’t need your stinkin’ laws. Speed limits? Optional. Ditto, gravity. Only one unwritten commandment of action moviemaking — thou shalt not exceed two hours — goes unheeded. As usual with this unstoppable franchise, it all works somehow. It’s been 16 years since car-obsessed thief/mechanic Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) first revved an engine on-screen, and a lot has changed since then. Dom is finished with his criminal ways. But soon enough, Dom is being recruited by the evil computer

hacker Cipher (Charlize Theron). In a sign that the “Furious” franchise is taking tips from Marvel, the sadistic supervillain seeks world domination. Although Dom has perfectly noble reasons for joining forces with her, the character’s inner turmoil means that Diesel gets to flex his acting muscles for a change. That’s not always a good thing. In one scene, he cries pearlsize tears, inspiring less compassion than curiosity: Could there be a correlation between the size of his tear ducts and his biceps? But back to the action: Cipher must be stopped, and there’s only

‘The Fate of the Furious’ (PG-13, 136 min.) DIRECTOR: F. Gary Gray

STARS: Vin Diesel, Charlize Theron, Jason Statham, Dwayne Johnson IN A NUTSHELL: The eighth film in “The Fast and the Furious” franchise has Vin Diesel’s Dom coerced into teaming with an evil tech hacker.

one group to do it. Enigmatic special agent Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) recruits Dom’s old crew, including Dom’s longtime love Letty (Michelle Rodriguez); former federal agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson); hilariously histrionic Roman (Tyrese Gibson); computer nerds Tej and Ramsey (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and

Nathalie Emmanuel); and a few new allies: onetime villain Deckard (Jason Statham) and Mr. Nobody’s rube of an underling (Scott Eastwood), who’s an easy target for the team’s jokes. Of course, nobody comes to the “Furious” franchise looking for jokes. It’s all about action, which doesn’t disappoint. As usual, the chases are gorgeously choreographed and utterly nonsensical. On top of the clunky dialogue and absurd plot twists, such moments suggest that the franchise — which already has two more installments planned — peaked three movies ago. Even so, “Fate” gives fans exactly what they want, provided they can ditch logic as easily as the movie does. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CASTING

Expect another big Bale transformation

Christian Bale confirmed that he will play Dick Cheney in a biopic of the former vice president from “The Big Short” writer-director Adam McKay. ”In the same way as it was a journey of discovery with ‘The Big Short,’ Adam was able to take a story that most people would go comatose listening to,” Bale told The Associated Press. Steve Carell will co-star as former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and Amy Adams will play Cheney’s wife, Lynne. UNIVERSAL PICTURES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

ALSO OPENING

‘Tommy’s Honour’ PG, 117 min.

This biopic tells the story of 19th-century Scottish golfer Tom Morris Jr. — Tommy, or Young Tom, as he was known, to distinguish him from his father, Old Tom Morris. The film charts Tommy’s ascendancy in the sport, and the gradual decline of his father’s influence. It’s a mildly stirring and quietly tragic tale — but at best it invites a smattering of polite applause, not an upturned barrel of Gatorade. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

‘Graduation’ R, 128 min.

“Graduation” offers a close study of post-Soviet Romanian life while observing the relationship between a father and daughter. What emerges is a portrait of idealism tempered by cynical experience in this post-communist country, where an entire invisible economy has blossomed on the strength of favors, obligations and status. Rack and ruin: ‘Colossal’s’ monster is a beast within her job and her boyfriend, returns to her small-town home. She gets a job in a bar — a stupid but understandable decision for someone who wants easy access to booze — run by her childhood friend, Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). Every night, she (surprise!) gets blackout drunk and passes out in a playground. Every morning when she comes to, she sees reports of a Godzilla-esque monster coming to life in Seoul, South Korea. Eventually, she realizes that she and the lizard are linked. She can make it stomp,

All monster stories are metaphors. “Frankenstein” is about the moral limits of scientific progress. “Dracula” is about the seductive power of the danger that lurks in the dark. “It” is about how clowns are flipping freaky. “Colossal,” out today, is about … well, I don’t really want to tell you. Here’s what I can say without ruining the experience. Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is an alcoholic who, after losing both

reality, one drunken stumble leads to the deaths of thousands — the hurt she causes is much greater than the hurt she realizes, or intends. But make no mistake: “Colossal” isn’t a screed about the evils of drink. It’s not even a movie about alcoholism; it’s a much more complex equation

than alcoholic plus alcohol equals problem. That complexity is what makes the movie hard to talk about without ruining it. The trailers make it look kind of like a sci-fi rom-com, which means people who go expecting a “Love in the Time of Kaiju” are going to be disappointed. “Colossal” is, in fact, a movie about damage: the kind we do to ourselves, the kind we do to others and the kind we receive (that we sometimes think we deserve). Gloria is imperfect, yes, but her imperfections do not make her unworthy of kindness, forgiveness and respect. All monsters are metaphors. In the end, “Colossal” is about how our monsters are very often ourselves. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby.

‘Detroit’

‘Atomic Blonde’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Aug. 4

EXPECTED RELEASE: July 28

SUMMARY: Based on the true story of the Detroit riots of 1967, the latest film from director Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”) looks to be a nail-biting window onto what happens when racial tensions are high, guns are loaded, everyone is scared and no one is listening. John Boyega, Will Poulter and Anthony Mackie star. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS).

SUMMARY: Charlize Theron has grown out her hair since “Mad Max: Fury Road,” but has kept her penchant for beating people up. Here she plays an assassin who uses (among other things) a freezer door, a billy club and a stiletto shoe to neutralize bad guys. Also her hands, feet and a variety of what appear to be very nice cars. K.P.K.

“It is never your job to tell someone else’s story. Zeke is an incredibly strong individual. So much respect for him. #Survivor.” @EMMAMARY4, reacting to Wednesday

night’s episode of “Survivor,” in which contestant Jeff Varner outed his fellow tribe member Zeke Smith, above, as transgender, and called him “deceptive.” Varner apologized and was sent home without a formal vote. Viewers and Smith’s tribe rallied to his support.

“These long suffering people would only date 10s ... but they learned that if they date 9-9.5s, they’ll find love.” @TIMRUNSHISMOUTH, giving the Cliffs Notes version of

the New York Post article “Why I won’t date hot women anymore,” about a 40-year-old man who stopped dating models and then found his fiancee, whom he referred to as a “softer beauty.” Unsurprisingly, the article was ridiculed on social media. “The most abundant natural resource on earth is men’s misplaced confidence,” @JessicaKRoy tweeted.

“ ‘Dawn’ & ‘Dusk’ — The sky just before sunrise and just after sunset. Cosmic #NamesForBeyonceTwins.” @NEILTYSON, the Twitter account of

astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, who gave Beyonce some unsolicited baby name input via Twitter. He also suggested Crescent and Gibbous — “Two phases of the Moon that are not New, Full, or Half” — and Castor and Pollux: “Brightest stars of the constellation Gemini, the Twins.”

“Ad companies: ‘Why does everyone use ad blockers?’ Everyone: ‘INTRUSIVE ADS ARE BAD.’ Burger King: ‘Ok Google, define intrusive.’ “ @DUCKINATOR, joking about Burger King’s TV ad that prompted any Google Home device in earshot to recite the Wikipedia definition of a Whopper. The ad didn’t go as planned, however, when viewers started editing Wikipedia’s entry for Whoppers. Then, Google disabled that particular voice command.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Chris Evans said in an interview with Elle magazine that he’s had “no bad breakups in [his] life.” “Typically, if I see an ex, I give a big hug, and it’s wonderful to catch up,” the actor said. “If you’re ever fortunate enough to love someone and have them love you back, it’s worth protecting that. It’s rare that someone can truly know you.” (EXPRESS)

More breaking news: Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx are actors.

During an appearance on “Ellen,” Charlize Theron talked about her experience with online dating: “You have to text them and then the flirting starts and it’s kind of awkward because you don’t know the person and they’re trying to be cute and they say weird things like, ‘What’s up, sexy?’ And it’s just awkward.” She also said the men are “in different variations of no clothes.” (EXPRESS)

‘OMG is this your way of breaking up with me?’ Sienna Miller cleared up rumors about a budding romance between her and Brad Pitt. The two were spotted “flirting” at a private dinner earlier this week, the New York Post reported. “I’m not going to even dignify it with a response,” she told the publication at a Tuesday screening of her latest film, “The Lost City of Z.” “It’s predictable and silly.” (EXPRESS)

Personal branding: Kids of ALL ages are doing it! Victoria Beckham has registered her 5-year-old daughter Harper’s name with intellectual property authorities in Britain and Europe. This offers Harper legal protections if she goes into show business. The three sons of Victoria and David Beckham — Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz — also have their names protected by earlier filings. Couple to reveal thing we all know Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx, who have been rumored since 2013 to be dating in secret, are reportedly ready to make their relationship public. A source told Us Weekly that Holmes “used to be super-worried about public attention,” and went through great lengths to dodge the paparazzi when meeting with Foxx. Now, the source says, Holmes “is tired of playing the hiding game.” On April 2, the two were spotted out at dinner in New York City. The source notes that “they’re going to go out to dinner more and are talking about a trip to Europe.” (EXPRESS)
