Austrian police admitted that they published a photo of U.S. actor and “The Nanny” co-creator Peter Marc Jacobson by mistake in their search for a suspected fraudster. A spokesman said the photo was provided by a woman who said she was defrauded of $52,000. The suspect apparently used a photo of Jacobson in a document he gave the victim. Austrian police “cannot know every celebrity in the world,” the spokesman said. (AP)

A calf that spent several days on the loose in Massachusetts is now a companion for a blind cow that recently lost a pig playmate. The cow, Baby, lives at the Don’t Forget Us Pet Us animal sanctuary in Dartmouth. The unnamed calf had been destined for the slaughterhouse. Deborah Devlin, who runs the sanctuary, says the timing is perfect. She says Baby’s friend for the past eight years, Lulu the pig, died Sunday. (AP)

But this Hollywood actor found a cause, then jetted to Washington, then moved to Washington, then got a job at a nonprofit group in Washington and then found herself having meetings at the Pentagon, where some of the attendees had no idea who she was. Her name is Melissa Fitzgerald. She was on “The West Wing.” She played — well, we’ll get to that. First, the Pentagon. In a wood-paneled conference room, someone cues up a PSA in which fellow “West Wing” alums, as a favor to Fitzgerald, publicize the organization she now works for, Justice for Vets. On screen, Bradley Whitford, Allison Janney and other cast members discuss the benefits of treatment courts for veterans who fall into legal trouble. The PSA finishes. THE DISTRICT The briefing was held in a private banquet room about 1,000 feet from the White House. The FBI was there. The Department of Homeland Security was there. So were staffers from the 9:30 Club and the Black Cat, gay bars Number Nine and Trade, and dozens of other nightlife spots and restaurants. The message was both dire and obvious, once unthinkable and now unavoidable: You know those terrorists who want to attack D.C.? Forget the Capitol. Next time, they might come for your happy hour. To hammer it home, law enforcement officials shared images of Islamic State and al-Qaeda propaganda that encourage attacks on American social spots. “These guys were terrifying,” says Bill Duggan, proprietor of Madam’s Organ. “They said, ‘For your business, you have to have a plan of succession.’” As in, who will be in charge if your front-door guy is bleeding out on the sidewalk. Washington is a city of hard targets. Monuments. The executive mansion. Agency headquarters. All ringed by concrete planters, steel bollards and armed guards. It is also a city of soft targets. Crowded clubs. Sunny beer gardens. Outdoor movie screenings. Insulated only by a door, a railing, maybe a cursory bag check. Is it only a matter of time? With every terrorist attack of the past 15 years, a different aspect of modern life has suddenly seemed vulnerable: Jets. Skyscrapers. Even the mail. That’s what terrorism does: It chips away at our confidence in the security of routine.

of Nightclub Security Consultants. Smith, who trains hospitality staffs across the country, says vigilance and diligence at a basic level are more crucial than ever.

Despite the seriousness of their recent briefing, officials emphasized that there are no specific, credible threats against D.C. nightlife. Terrorists, though, have gone after soft targets for years. Radical Islamist groups shot up a shopping mall in Kenya in 2013, and killed and injured scores last month in a park in Pakistan.

The 2013 Boston Marathon was shattered by the fatal explosions set by a pair of self-radicalized brothers. But the tactic re-entered Western territory in a big way in November, when Islamic State militants massacred patrons of a concert hall and cafe in Paris and set off explosions at a stadium. “By God, as we struck France at the center of its abode in Paris, then we swear we will strike America at its center in Washington,” said a man identified as “Al Karar the Iraqi” in an alleged Islamic State propaganda video released shortly afterward. Does that mean the White House? Or your favorite brunch spot? “Don’t care, blow me up,” says Mathew Ashley, 41, after finishing a salmon burger on the patio of Brasserie Beck, the Belgian restaurant on K Street NW. “The best thing we can do is just keep on living,” says his dining companion Kirsten Feyling, 36. “It’s going to be fine.” The Paris attacks prompted the

The briefing wasn’t all that frightening, says one D.C. nightclub owner — but it left some attendees wanting more than just hotlines and run-hide-fight videos. “I don’t understand how emergency preparedness actually works in this town,” says the owner, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he didn’t want to associate his venue with terrorism paranoia. “Suppose there’s a dirty bomb downtown. What’s the process for figuring out what’s going on? Should [patrons] shelter in place? The U.S. Attorney’s Office on Thursday said it will not file charges against four D.C. police officers involved in the 2014 fatal shooting of a robbery suspect. Following a nearly two-year investigation into the Christmas Eve shooting of 33-year-old Gregory Gray, prosecutors determined that no charges should be filed, citing witnesses who said Gray pulled a handgun on the officers after they chased him into a courtyard following the robbery of two men in Southeast Washington. Bowser to submit bill for $15 minimum wage Mayor Muriel Bowser says the city needs a $15 minimum hourly wage to help lift people from poverty. The Democratic mayor joined union leaders and lowwage workers Thursday to call for the increase. Her administration plans to submit legislation to the D.C. Council soon calling for the city to increase its minimum wage to $15 by 2020. The city now has a $10.50 minimum wage that will rise to $11.50 in July under legislation signed in 2014 by Bowser’s predecessor, Vincent Gray. (AP) TRANSPORTATION

Riders evacuated from broken-down Metro train Metro said more than 100 passengers were stuck for about an hour on a train outside the Rosslyn station after the train became disabled by a mechanical problem. Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said the train broke down shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday about 100 feet from the platform. He said 100 to 200 passengers were stuck. They walked through the train to the platform, Stessel said. There was no evacuation to the tunnel itself. Stessel said it’s unclear what caused the problem but there was no smoke or fire, and no one was injured. (AP)

Report: Gray case stalled over witness Key testimony against former mayor tainted by credibility concerns THE DISTRICT Federal prosecutors were counting on the testimony of a powerful political fundraiser to help prove that former District Mayor Vincent C. Gray knew about an illegal shadow campaign that helped pay for his bid to win the city’s highest office. But the investigation of Gray’s role was delayed, and possibly aborted, because of concerns about Jeffrey E. Thompson’s credibility, recent interviews and new records show. Investigators last year began asking questions about the ages of Thompson’s sexual partners to determine whether he had committed a crime, according to witnesses who spoke to federal agents and The Washington Post. Prosecutors also conducted

The long-running inquiry into the illegal financing of Gray’s 2010 campaign uncovered a secret get-out-the-vote effort funded by Thompson that ran parallel

He had said under oath that the former mayor knew of the off-the-books spending. Gray denies the allegations. Even if his sexual encounters did not involve underage partners, they could be a serious distraction to a jury and detract from his credibility on the witness stand if defense attorneys brought them to light. nation+world Plan, expected to pass, allows assisted suicide in specific health cases TORONTO Canada on Thursday introduced a new assisted suicide law that will apply only to citizens and residents, meaning Americans won’t be able to travel to Canada to die. Canadian government officials said a person would have to be eligible for health services in Canada to take advantage of the law, which applies to “adults who are suffering intolerably and for whom death is reasonably foreseeable.” It says the person must be mentally competent, 18 or older, have a serious and incurable disease, illness or disability

and be in an advanced state of irreversible decline of capability. Canada’s Supreme Court last year struck down laws that bar doctors from helping someone die, but put the ruling on hold while the government came up with a new law. The proposed law still requires approval in Parliament but is expected to pass, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government controls the majority of seats. It’s inspiring. Who wouldn’t want to have that life? Who doesn’t want to be rich? This is New York.” The billionaire real estate man is poised to wallop his Republican opponents in Tuesday’s New York primary. To understand why, listen to passengers on the ferry. TECHNOLOGY The robots are coming — to help run your life or sell you stuff — at an online texting service near you. Chatbots — the name for robots that simulate human conversation — have been thrust into the spotlight in recent weeks amid a flurry of new experiments in how they might be used to shape the future of shopping. Retail heavyweights Sephora and H&M recently launched bots on messaging app Kik that help shoppers browse and buy their products. Taco Bell showed off its TacoBot, a way to use the popular workplace messaging app Slack to place a meal order. And on Tuesday, Facebook announced it has created a platform that allows companies to develop bots that run within its Messenger app, which has some 900 million users worldwide. Google and other companies are reportedly working on similar ideas. Online messaging has become routine for most people, offering more immediacy than email or voice calls, said Michael Wolf, a media and technology consultant. Messaging services are now growing faster than traditional online social platforms such as Facebook or Twitter, according to research by Wolf’s firm, Activate. There were 76 million people in the United States using messaging apps such as Kik, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger

in 2014, according to research firm eMarketer. That figure shot up to 113 million last year, and is it expected to surge to 177 million by 2019. Experts say messaging bots can handle a wider range of tasks than apps offered by retailers and other consumer businesses. In part, that’s because bots can recognize a variety of spoken or typed phrases, where apps force users to choose from options on a drop-down menu. Reaching a chatbot can be as simple as clicking a link in an online ad or scanning a boxy bar code with a smartphone camera. A specialpurpose app requires a download and often a new account sign-up. “Bots are the new apps,” Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said at a conference last month. Many currently available chatbots use emoji and slang, an effort to make it feel like an exchange you’d have with a friend. In a recent report, analyst Ken Sena of the Evercore investment firm noted that chatbots “are becoming scarily good” at carrying on human-like conversations. But chatbots are not new to the technology landscape. Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana are powered by bots, and bots have been in use for things like trying booking travel or getting information from your health insurance provider. But we appear to be on the cusp of a big burst of bot innovation, with experiments underway for using them not only for shopping, but for news, banking and hailing rides. Facebook’s chatbots On Tuesday, Facebook announced its new bot initiative that works inside its Messenger app. A few of these bots are already live, after a bunch of partnerships were granted early access. 1-800-Flowers lets you order flowers just by typing a friend’s name. CNN and The Wall Street Journal will send you the day’s top stories. Hi Poncho, the “weathercat,” will give you the weather. But similar complaints have arisen from almost all of them — they’re slow to respond, the Verge reports. Syria cease-fire collapses amid heavy fighting SYRIA A surge in fighting across Syria on Thursday signaled the apparent collapse of a landmark cease-fire that has been under mounting stress in recent days because of intensifying assaults by government forces and rebels. The partial truce, which took effect in late February, represented a rare moment of agreement over the Syrian conflict between its most powerful outside players: Russia and the United States. The burst of fighting will certainly complicate peace talks in Geneva that resumed Wednesday, and prolong a civil war that has killed more than 250,000 and displaced millions. The U.S. noted its concern with the U.S.-Russian task force that monitors the cease-fire, a State Department official said, and has proposed measures to de-escalate the situation. In Syria, rebels reported heavy air raids in the provinces of Latakia and Homs. The Islamic State, meanwhile, claimed that it shot down a warplane Thursday in the province of Suwayda. In Aleppo, an assault by progovernment forces threatened to cut off the only supply road to rebel forces in the city. In the video obtained by CNN, 15 girls wearing flowing headscarves are expressionless as they state their names to a man heard off camera. They give the date as

She then encouraged the Nigerian government to meet Boko Haram’s demands, which were not stated. CNN reported that the video was made as “part of negotiations between the government and Boko Haram.” Although Nigerian officials have alluded vaguely to possible talks, there have been few clear details. The kidnapping of the 276 schoolgirls from the northeastern town of Chibok gained worldwide

to have an extended discussion with you about the issues and ways my background can make a real and positive diﬀerence. My goal was to let you know where I stand on things that matter. Unfortunately, the press and the politicians are focused on my decision to fund my own campaign. They act like it’s a bad thing. You may agree, but I hope you’ll read why I made this decision.

We knew this race would be a challenge. I was an unknown running against three candidates who’ve served 56 years in public oﬃce and another one who’s been a local media celebrity for almost four decades. And this is one of the most expensive media markets anywhere.

Instead, my wife, children, and I decided I should pay my own way. It’s money I’ve earned growing a business, not from an inheritance, but from one small store to the largest private wine merchant in the country. We’re a family business, and the money is as much theirs as mine.

Television and radio ads could not stand alone in one of the most educated districts in the country. You rightfully expect detailed information about my positions and background. From our website and mailers, you can see that we are committed to allowing you to read for yourself about how I’d address major problems we face.

But success isn’t worth anything if it isn’t shared. That’s the way we live our lives and run our business, and that’s the reason we’ve been enthusiastic contributors to thousands of charities here and around the country. Paying my own way is the right decision.

Having raised millions of dollars for nonproﬁts, schools, and political candidates, I certainly could have raised enough money to fund a competitive campaign. But the PACs, lobbyists and big dollar donors who give money would expect special attention. No matter how well-intentioned, those contributions and the candidates who take them are part of the reason Washington is broken.

Rather than challenging my business experiences, my issue positions or my proposals, my opponents and the press focus on the money I’m spending to communicate with you. You won’t ﬁnd stories about my ideas, only how much I’m spending to tell you about them. You’ll read more about it later this week when we report to the Federal Election Commission that I’ve spent $9.1 million to date on my campaign. Campaigns shouldn’t be this expensive. But they are,

especially when you’re a big underdog in an expensive, fragmented media market. The average member of Congress spends 60 percent of his or her time raising money. The system is broken when Representatives spend more time keeping their job than doing the one they were elected to do. We need campaign finance reform. I’ll fight for it for public funding of campaigns, total transparency in political contributions, eliminating dark money, and ending the special interests’ stranglehold. If elected, I’ll continue to pay my own way. And I’ll have 60% more time to listen to you and advocate on your behalf. I’m self-funding because it’s the right thing to do. It’s better than taking money from PACs, lobbyists, and other big donors. It has made me a better candidate, and I believe it will make me a more effective Congressman if you give me the opportunity to serve.

A shocking realization: Ousted Wittman was among top coaches in Wizards history WIZARDS Randy Wittman isn’t young, or modern, or cutting-edge. He often seemed suspicious of innovation; his most famous expression was a pained grimace. He was, in other words, what you might expect from a Bobby Knight protege. But he also wound up being something many never would have predicted: one of the longest-tenured and most successful coaches in Wizards history. A day after Wittman’s firing was announced, let’s take a quick look back at the day he was hired in January 2012. He didn’t want the job, didn’t want to have to replace his close friend Flip Saunders. The Wizards were in the middle of a rebuild, and had a .363 winning percentage since their last trip to the playoffs. Washington was 2-15 when he took control; his own career record as a head coach was 100-207. Did you have confidence then that he would coach the team for more than four seasons, would

record the best Washington season in more than three decades, would take the Wizards to the second round in back-to-back years for the first time in a generation? Did you have confidence that he would coach the fourth-most games (377) in franchise history, accumulating the fifth-most wins (178) and the sixth-best winning percentage (.472)? Did you think he would leave with the best playoff percentage (.571) of any coach this franchise has employed? Even in this awful season — which crushed expectations, infuriated fans and cost Wittman his job — the Wizards managed to crawl back to .500. Here are the coaches who have led Washington to three straight .500-orbetter seasons: Eddie Jordan, Dick Motta, K.C. Jones, Gene Shue and Wittman. Few, if any, Wizards fans were disappointed by Wittman’s dismissal. There were even fans who fretted during the past two playoff runs that the success would

just extend Wittman’s tenure, staving off any chance at greatness. Because Wittman’s teams were never great. But, at their best, they competed, and played defense, and were respectable. They were better than most of the last 30 years of Wizards teams. Now it’s time to hire somebody else. Almost inevitably, that somebody will inspire far more excitement than Wittman did 41/2 years ago. But he will also face far different expectations. In his Thursday goodbye note, owner Ted Leonsis wrote that he “always will remember [Wittman’s] professional, hardworking and honest approach.” Those are different words than innovative and cutting-edge, and let’s hope the next coach embraces those things, too. WORKSPACE Kate Glantz is making a makeshift situation work. When she left her job at the Peace Corps headquarters last summer to focus full time on the charitable wedding registry company she’d founded, Heartful.ly, she didn’t expect to work from home for the long term. But she’s still working out of her English basement studio in Columbia Heights, sitting on her couch and using an end table as a desk. “It’s mortifying,” she says with a laugh. “I didn’t prioritize setting up a space for working, and now I’m so overwhelmed in the day-to-day of the business that I haven’t been able to set up a proper workspace.” But working from her apartment helps her save on overhead costs as she’s growing her company, and it’s got its perks. “I do love the flexibility of being able to do errands or work out at any hour of the day,” says Glantz, 30. But there are lots of renters out there finding ways to do it — and enjoying it. And it’s probably easier to do now than ever. “Over the decade I’ve been working from home it’s become so much more possible to work in a very small amount of space, and I think the reason for that is clearly technology,” says Janel Laban, executive editor for Apartment Therapy who’s based in Chicago. Gone are the days of big, boxy computer monitors and towers that took up a lot of space — and looked unattractive. “Now people can have one slim laptop, a cellphone and a pair of wireless headphones, and they’re pretty much set,” she says. And tools for sharing documents, like Google Docs and Dropbox, eliminate the need for piles of papers cluttering up your workspace. Laban suggests having some kind of separation between work and non-work areas. If you don’t have room for a desk and work from your couch like Glantz or at your kitchen or dining-room table, this can be as simple as having a drawer or cabinet where you stash your laptop and other supplies after closing out the work day. “You want the spaces where you rest and relax to remain the spaces where you rest and relax,” she says. That comes in handy, since his partner is a full-time student working toward her master’s in nutrition and dietetics. She needs her own work-study area in the living room. “It’s helped that we each have our respective spaces we can occupy, especially if we need to spread out some papers or lay out books,” Durand says. “But it took some trial and error to figure out how not to interrupt each other when we’re both home.” To avoid that, the couple shares their school and work calendars

to juggle schedules and work needs. This shows when one of them might be on a phone call or need some extra quiet time. But others who work from their apartments could have the opposite challenge: feeling isolated. “I do feel like I’m missing that interaction with people,” Glantz says. “So I try to get out and try to swap phone calls for coffee [meetings].” And when she’s sick of staring at her four walls, she works at the Halcyon Incubator in Georgetown, which provides support for social entrepreneurs, and makes use of Cove’s community workspaces. Coach Jay Gruden led the Redskins to the NFC East title in 2015, but he is just 13-20 overall in two years.

Returning to work: Gruden must show he’s still growing control of the franchise and he’s keeping Gruden for now. Which brings us to this year. The Redskins benefited from a poor division last season, but can they win it again after opponents have recovered? The Giants spent massive amounts on free agents, the Cowboys get injured quarterback Tony Romo back and the Eagles are no longer dysfunctional with Chip Kelly gone. Could Washington be a better team with a worse record this fall? And would that tell McCloughan that Gruden may not be the one to take the Redskins to greater heights? Or maybe Washington will win a second straight division title and Gruden’s offense will sparkle brightly with a more seasoned line, double tight-end sets and quarterback Kirk Cousins gaining more confidence as an undisputed team leader. This is the watershed year for Gruden’s tenure. It’s time for him to show what he can do. Fortunately, Gruden showed a lot about team building last season. Poor losses never devolved into a freefall. The Redskins lost consecutive games only once in 2015 and finished the regular season

Jay Gruden will soon show whether he’s the Redskins’ long-term solution at coach. The long offseason grind begins with players returning Monday for workouts. The draft is less than two weeks away, followed by OTAs and minicamps over the next six weeks before training camp begins in late July. Gruden enters his third year with added confidence after winning the NFC East last season — even though the team did it with a lackluster 9-7 mark and then lost in the first round. He’s also free of the Robert Griffin III debate following the quarterback’s release. And the stain of a 4-12 debut season in 2014 seems to be fading with the roster getting reshaped by general manager Scot McCloughan. Unlike predecessors Steve Spurrier and Jim Zorn, who each exited after going 12-20 in two seasons, Gruden gets another chance after going 1319 in his two regular seasons. In the past, owner Dan Snyder might have switched coaches again, but McCloughan has

with four straight victories. In past years, the team often fell apart after two bad games, but Gruden’s upbeat style kept the roster working hard. The Redskins are in future mode with enough offense to win regularly. The focus of the draft will be adding more talent on defense, but Washington’s return path to the postseason will be determined by Gruden’s offensive playbook. This is where he must show growth. Opponents spent the offseason watching game film

that showed the Redskins had no running game last season. Can Gruden create lanes for running back Matt Jones? Meanwhile, how will Gruden utilize free agent tight end Vernon Davis? Will a two tight-end set with him and Jordan Reed create a devastating short passing game? Washington has the potential to improve. Now Gruden must show the same. Rolfe immediately stepped into the lineup and became one of the team’s most important players. This offseason, United traded a second-round draft pick to Chicago for Patrick Nyarko. And just like Rolfe, he has quickly become one of D.C. United’s top attacking threats. The pair were a part of the team’s first goal in last Saturday’s 4-0 win against Vancouver, as Nyarko found Rolfe with an incisive pass before the latter’s shot was saved and Fabian Espindola cleaned up the rebound. “Whenever Patrick has the ball, you know something good is going to happen,” Rolfe said after the game. United not only acquired both players for relatively nothing, but the club is benefiting from the chemistry Rolfe and Nyarko developed over four seasons together in Chicago. “I love playing with him,” Nyarko said of Rolfe. “He makes things easy with his runs. I just need to place the ball there and he’ll make good use of it.” United looks to secure backto-back wins over Canadian clubs when it hosts Toronto FC at RFK Stadium on Saturday (5 p.m., NewsChannel 8). The beloved 1967 Disney cartoon classic “The Jungle Book” takes on a dazzling live-actionish life in Jon Favreau’s adaptation, a visual wonderment of color, texture, movement and spectacular animal life. Brought to the screen with computergenerated animation, the Indian jungle of Rudyard Kipling’s original stories glimmers and shines here, with each fern frond and dappled glade enticing the viewer further into its primal depths. Whether it’s the sleek, glistening coat of the panther Bagheera (voiced by Ben Kingsley) or each individual hair painstakingly undulating on a

she-wolf and her pups, every inch of “The Jungle Book” pulses with life, grace and authenticity. Even when this idyllic world turns ugly, it’s a thing of rare beauty. That even goes for Shere Khan (voiced by Idris Elba), the wounded, perpetually enraged tiger and villain of the film, who makes it his life’s work to hunt down a little boy named Mowgli (Neel Sethi), convinced that the child will grow into a destructive, marauding adult. It’s decided that Mowgli should return to his “own kind,” a journey fraught with untold physical and psychic dangers. Filmed with a propulsive, energetic flair, “The Jungle Book” allows viewers the vicarious pleasure of sidling up to magnificent (sometimes mangy) beasts

as if they were household pets. Even when the movie takes on the episodic, repetitive contours of a typical chase film — including some genuinely terrifying fight sequences and a couple of potentially upsetting deaths — the visual environment is so marvelously transporting that

plot barely matters. Fans of the 1967 cartoon will be waiting for their favorite characters to show up, which they do, complete with musical numbers. But everything’s bigger and brighter and more believable in this iteration of “The Jungle Book,” which derives much of its pleasure from the silky vocal performances of Kingsley, Elba, Lupita Nyong’o, Scarlett Johansson and Garry Shandling (in a posthumous turn). Like all classic Disney productions, “The Jungle Book” possesses its share of fear, suffering and loss. But somehow the audience comes out whistling — in this case, with joy and quite a bit of awe. ‘Barbershop’ a cut above typical comedy Serious issues and big laughs combine in the latest stop by the shop FILM REVIEW Just as the men and women at Calvin’s Barbershop are older and have more responsibilities, so too is “Barbershop: The Next Cut” more mature than its cinematic predecessors. Director Malcolm D. Lee and his screenwriters raise the stakes of 2002’s “Barbershop” and its 2004 sequel by taking Chicago’s ongoing gang violence seriously, making it the focus of the plot. But since the film is a comedy first, the one-liners serve as a welcome form of levity. This is a delicate balancing act — one which the large acting ensemble pulls off, with effortless chemistry. In the first sequel, “Barbershop 2: Back in Business,” Calvin (Ice Cube) joined forces with the beauty shop next door, carving a neutral territory in the ongoing battle of the sexes. This neutrality now takes on a larger purpose

since gangbangers also visit the shop. After discussing how politicians ignore the South Side, Calvin and salon owner Angie (Regina Hall) organize the community, persuading rival gangs to participate in a 48-hour cease-fire. Although this sounds like pretty serious stuff, everyone at Calvin’s is so relaxed — and naturally funny — using jokes, not just argument, to make their points. Some subplots exist primarily for comedy: Rashad (Common) must resist advances from Draya (Nicki Minaj) — the screenplay includes several asides about her figure — while

And when tensions are at their peak, he throws in a dance sequence, just to remind us that everyone still cares for one another. “Barbershop: The Next Cut” is a gentler alternative to “ChiRaq,” Spike Lee’s bracing satire about Chicago street violence. (Spike Lee and Malcolm D. Lee are cousins). If “Chi-Raq” aimed to shock us out of complacency, “The Next Cut” creates a more welcoming groove, encouraging greater openness to outside perspectives. The cast of characters is huge, with many larger-than-life personalities, so it was inevitable that Lee couldn’t give them all the attention they deserve. Compared with the settings of most movies, however, “Barbershop: The Next Cut” remains a place where almost anyone would love to while away a long, easygoing afternoon. ALAN ZILBERMAN

Could it be that he’s hoping that the stillfresh memory of his hit movie “Deadpool” won’t be tainted by the stench of this latest stinker? The actor needn’t worry.

Law review: Why do kids have to live by the book? My son’s bedroom is decorated with an Amazonian theme. Not the jungle; the boxes. Every box Bezos sends us is immediately commandeered and dragged upstairs, where it is turned into something else. It’s not just boxes, either. Empty toilet paper rolls, oatmeal containers, egg cartons all get turned into a weaponized Minecraft time machine transmogrifier robot of one kind or another. So I could empathize with some of the animals in this week’s “The Jungle Book,” which I saw with my 4-foot inventor ON A SCHOOL NIGHT. SO EXCITING. In the movie, young Mowgli (Neel Sethi) is consistently reprimanded for his “tricks” — namely, his tool building. His wolf father scolds him for using a hollowed-out fruit rind to retrieve water more effectively; his

panther guardian Bagheera (voiced by Ben Kingsley) reminds him that binding vines together to make ropes is “not the way of the jungle.” Baloo the bear (Bill Murray) encourages Mowgli’s creativity, but only after Baloo discovers that fearless boy plus leaf-based beekeeping suit equals honey. Of course, sometimes authority figures say “no” for good reason; last summer my son got obsessed with the TV show “BattleBots,” leading to a heated dinnertime discussion about why building a “spinning death blade” was not

an appropriate activity for a 7-year-old. But the law of the jungle forbids Mowgli’s tricks simply because they’re against the law of the jungle: The animals can’t understand why someone would need to build stuff, so building is not allowed. Kids too often hear things aren’t allowed, and the reason they’re not allowed is because they’re not allowed. I’m not saying parents and teachers should let children do whatever they want (see: spinning death blade), but we have got to start making room in their world for more yes. Yes, pour your own milk. Sure, check out that book about space from the library for the 10th week in a row. Here’s your helmet, there’s your bike, be home for dinner. Like the animals of “The Jungle Book,” we think the law of our jungle exists to keep our kids safe; moreover, we think if we follow the law, safety is the only possible outcome. That’s naive, of course, but it’s actually dangerous — it produces children who not only function best in a rules-laden society, but who are comfortable obeying supposedly unchangeable rules that are based on tradition rather than reason. If we raise kids thinking the old ways are the only ways, they’ll never discover new ones. We need to stop training our kids out of all their tricks.

Anne Jackson, a Tony Awardnominated theater actress who often appeared onstage with her husband, Eli Wallach, in comedies and classics, died this week. She was 90. Peter Wallach said his mother died of natural causes Tuesday at her Manhattan home. Jackson and Wallach’s partnership was epic by Hollywood acting-couple standards. They starred in a series of plays, including George Bernard Shaw’s “Major Barbara” in 1956 and ”Luv” in the mid1960s. A California judge on Wednesday voided the sale of a former Catholic convent to a Los Angeles businesswoman, clearing the way for Katy Perry to purchase the hilltop property. Perry obtained permission from the city’s archbishop to buy the hilltop property in Los Feliz for $14.5 million, but the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary agreed to sell the property to another bidder when they found they didn’t agree with Perry’s music and message. Perry’s bid for the property must now be approved by the Vatican before it can go through. (AP)
