Police say a man stole steaks from an East Texas Wal-Mart then tossed some of the meat from his vehicle as authorities pursued him in a high-speed chase. Police said the pursuit began around 11 a.m. Wednesday after the suspect fled the store in Longview. The suspect began throwing the meat out of his vehicle and one steak bounced off a patrol car. Bee spells out big changes National Spelling Bee toughens things up for its top competitors

Here are the winning words from recent years of the bee. Do these words look easy to you? SCHERENSCHNITTE: The art of cutting paper into designs. Winning word for co-champion Vanya Shivashankar in 2015. NUNATAK: A hill or mountain

completely surrounded by glacial ice. Winning word for co-champion Gokul Venkatachalam in 2015. ANDREW HARNIK (AP)

EDUCATION After two straight years of ties, the Scripps National Spelling Bee is adding more sting: The championship rounds will last longer, and the words will be harder. The bee, now televised in prime time by ESPN, has exploded in popularity over the past two decades. And the spellers have gotten increasingly savvy. So instead of sticking to a list of 25 “championship words” selected weeks earlier, the final rounds could have as many as 75 words. And the organizers of the bee, which has taken place at National Harbor, Md., since 2011, can choose harder words on the fly if the spellers don’t appear to be struggling. “As difficult as those words offered those co-champions were, we had a more difficult section in our word list, but we couldn’t go to them because our rules bound us to stick to that 25-word championship word section,” Paige Kimble, the bee’s executive director, told the Associated Press. Before 2014, the system worked

well enough. There hadn’t been a tie in more than 50 years. And the tie two years ago was a bit of a fluke: Both spellers got one of the championship words wrong, but because they misspelled backto-back, the bee continued. T h e n l a s t ye a r, Va ny a Shivashankar and Gokul Venkatachalam, both veteran spellers, plowed through the championship words with ease. Gokul’s last word was “nunatak.” He “spelled it in one second,” Kimble said.

Current and former spellers applauded the changes, saying the hardest words should be last. On occasion, championship words have left veteran spellers underwhelmed. Tejas Muthussamy, 13, of Glen Allen, Va., and Sylvie Lamontagne, 13, of Lakewood, Colo., finalists last year who are returning, both said tougher words were used earlier in the finals. “The 25 words on the championship word list just tend to be a little bit easier than the other

words they’ve used right before that,” Sylvie said. The changes mean the bee, which usually wraps up between 10 and 11 p.m. on the last day, could run later this year. Tejas said he’s trying to prepare for the May 24-26 championship by practicing late at night. There will also be bigger rewards. The first-place cash prize is rising from $30,000 to $40,000, while second place will now get $30,000 and third place, $20,000.

Donald Trump is a big fan of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and isn’t afraid to admit it, even in places where Brady isn’t exactly a fan favorite (everywhere but New England, in other words). After tossing his supporters the usual red meat Wednesday night in Berlin, Md., Trump had some fun near the end of his speech. “We love Tom Brady, right?” Trump trolled the crowd of Ravens fans. “He’s great. He’s great. He’s great. How can you not?” “Booooooooo,” replied the crowd.

‘Bud Summit’ may come true THE DISTRICT Adam Eidinger had been sending letters to the White House asking for a meeting since he led a successful ballot measure fight to legalize pot in the nation’s capital. The letters asked for a “Bud Summit” with President Barack Obama’s drug policy advisers to talk about removing pot from the nation’s list of most dangerous drugs. Eidinger, however, never received a reply until he tried something more aggressive. He organized an illegal smoke-in outside the White House, complete with a 51-foot replica of a marijuana joint painted with the phrase “Obama, Deschedule Cannabis Now!” The protest ended with several dozen activists simultaneously lighting up — without getting arrested — and sending a cloud of marijuana smoke wafting over the White House’s north lawn. And unlike letters, that, apparently, got the attention of officials inside. A White House spokesman

Wednesday confirmed that Eidinger and a small group of advocates behind marijuana legalization in the District would meet with White House officials on Monday. The White House confirmed the meeting after Eidinger’s group issued a press release announcing the meeting. It was not immediately clear if the meeting would be with Obama’s Office of National Drug Control Policy, which has done similar outreach with national groups lobbying for less

stringent marijuana laws, or if it would be with higher-level White House officials. Eidinger declined to name the official he was invited to meet with, but he cast the meeting as historic, and a hopeful sign that the Obama administration may advocate for changing marijuana’s official federal designation as a Schedule 1 substance by the Drug Enforcement Agency. Even though marijuana has been legalized for recreational use in Colorado, Washington state, the District and Alaska, it remains classified under federal law as on par with heroin. That makes possession a felony in the eyes of the federal government and makes it difficult to do clinical research. Eidinger, a supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders in the Democratic presidential contest, used national exposure from the White House smoke-in this month to urge Obama to take a more active role in marijuana reform to help unite the Democratic Party behind likely nominee Hillary Clinton. Eidinger credited the smokein and its “global attention” for pushing the White House to meet. AARON C. DAVIS (THE WASHINGTONPOST)

Gyrocopter pilot gets 120-day jail sentence Florida man convicted of flying onto the lawn of the U.S. Capitol in ‘15 THE DISTRICT A Florida man who piloted a oneperson gyrocopter through some of the most restricted U.S. airspace and landed on the lawn of the Capitol in 2015 was sentenced Thursday to 120 days in jail. Douglas Hughes, 62, was sentenced in federal court in Washington by Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly. Hughes has said his April 15, 2015, flight in the bare-bones aircraft was a way to call attention to the influence of big money in politics. The former mail carrier from Ruskin, Fla., was carrying letters for each member of Congress on the topic of campaign finance. The tail of his aircraft had a postal service logo. Hughes pleaded guilty in November to a felony of operating a gyrocopter without a license. Prosecutors had asked for 10 months in prison, arguing that his flight from Gettysburg, Pa., to the nation’s capital put countless lives at risk. In a court document filed ahead of the sentencing hearing, prosecutors argued that Hughes’ flight “put unsuspecting people

in real danger, disrupted operations at the United States Capitol, and demonstrated a profound disrespect for the law.” Hughes “violated important public safety laws because he wanted people to pay attention to his political views,” prosecutors wrote. Hughes’ attorneys had said that he should be allowed to remain out of jail. In a statement to the court they underscored that no one was injured as a result of Hughes’ flight. They called the stunt an “act of aerial civil disobedience” and said it “was in the nation’s proud tradition of nonviolent civil disobedience.” “The attention his flight

gained, Mr. Hughes hopes, will force the nation to finally confront the issue of campaign finance rather than continue to ignore the problem. For this reason, Mr. Hughes should be considered a hero for his conduct,” his attorneys wrote. Hughes’ attorneys and prosecutors disagree about how much danger the public was in because of his flight. Prosecutors wrote that Hughes had “close encounters” with several aircraft and flew “dangerously close” to a commercial flight departing a Washington-area airport. Hughes said that wasn’t true. And smoke from the fire has now drifted as far north as D.C.’s southwestern suburbs, prompting concern from residents there. Small fires that jumped to the east of Skyline Drive on Thursday were quickly controlled by crews creating containment lines, officials said. Nearly 350 firefighters and support crew from around the country have been battling the blaze. Using leaf blowers, rakes, shovels and bulldozers, firefighters have established containment lines on the northern and western sides of the fire, hoping to get rid of leaves and debris that would fuel the flames. Campaign chair hints at female running mate, fueling speculation

POLITICS With Bernie Sanders close to being mathematically eliminated from contention for the Democratic nomination, one of the hottest parlor games in town right now involves speculating about who Hillary Clinton will choose as her running mate. Thursday morning’s Boston Globe quotes senior Clinton campaign officials saying that the front-runner will consider picking another woman, and that strategists at her headquarters in Brooklyn are intrigued by the idea of an all-female ticket. “We’ll start with a broad list and then begin to narrow it. But there is no question that there will be women on that list,” campaign chairman John Podesta told the Globe’s Annie Linskey. This, naturally, injects Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s name into the mix. Clinton would never choose Sanders as her running mate, but Warren might be able to activate many of his core supporters. If the former Secretary of State remains soft with liberals come summer, she might look leftward. Also working in Warren’s favor: Democrats do not have a deep bench of senior women who are plausible as Clinton’s VP. There are only three Democratic women who hold governorships and 14 in the Senate, including Warren. Privately, Warren appears to

covet the job. She’s picked her spots, carefully choosing which issues she weighs in on. But she’s signaled recently that she would embrace with gusto the attack dog role typically played by a VP candidate. Earlier this week, she ripped into Ted Cruz for saying that seeking the presidency requires significant sacrifice. She spent another recent day going after Donald Trump. Bill Clinton made an unorthodox choice when he picked another young Southerner, Al Gore, to be his running mate in 1992. The generational contrast worked well against George H.W. Bush. to shatter the ultimate glass ceiling could attract moderate women who dislike both Trump and Cruz. But this could very well just be a trial balloon. There are a lot of factors working against the freshman senator. Her repeated refusal to endorse Hillary matters. She is the only female Democratic senator to stay on the sidelines. The Clintons are well known for placing a premium on loyalty. As West Wing veterans, they can surely envision the kinds of headaches that a Vice President Warren might cause for them. Also, the Republican governor

of Massachusetts, Charlie Baker, would get to pick Warren’s replacement until a special election is held, which could take 145 to 160 days. Hillary will be reluctant to do anything that could stop Democrats from retaking the Senate and undermine her ability to push an ambitious agenda during her first 100 days. And while picking a liberal former law professor from Harvard could theoretically help Hillary play the populism card, it would also make it easier for Republicans to caricature her as an out-of-touch, out-of-the-mainstream elitist. The approximate number of Americans who filed for first-time state unemployment benefits for the week of April 16, the lowest figure since November 1973, according to Labor Department data released Thursday. Analysts suggest the historically low figures indicate an increasingly strong job market and relative lack of layoffs; employers are holding onto workers and possibly looking to hire more, a positive sign for an economy that endured a rocky start to the year. Obama: No more Iraq aid amid political crises President Barack Obama said Thursday the U.S. and its Gulf partners should wait to see if Iraq can resolve its political crisis before committing more financial aid, arguing that the paralysis is impeding U.S.-led efforts to defeat the Islamic State group and reconstruct the country. Obama’s warning appeared intended to pressure Iraq’s leaders to put disputes aside so that a stable government can form. (AP)

Canada may legalize pot Legislation to make use and sale of marijuana legal likely to pass in ’17 OTTAWA The Canadian government has announced that it will introduce legislation next year to decriminalize and legalize the sale of marijuana, making Canada the first G7 country to permit widespread use of pot. The announcement Wednesday was made by Canada’s health minister, Jane Philpott, at a U.N. drug conference in New York.

It follows through on a promise made during Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s election campaign last fall. Philpott said details of the legislation are being worked out, but she vowed that the government “will keep marijuana out of the hands of children and profits out of the hands of criminals.” With the Liberals holding a majority in the House of Commons, the marijuana legislation is likely to pass. The path toward the legalization of marijuana is the latest in a string of policy announcements

Big companies lag further on female CEOs Just four percent of S&P 500 CEOs are women. Only 19 percent of those companies’ board members are women. Yet even among the discouraging stats about the number of women in corporate leadership roles, this one stands out: Exactly one of the 87 new CEOs named to lead the largest public companies in the United States or Canada in 2015 was a woman, according to a new report. The study, released Tuesday by Strategy&, the consulting division of PwC, examined the 2,500 largest global companies and found that among the 359 permanent or interim CEOs named in 2015, only 10 of them — worldwide! — were female. At 2.8 percent of all new CEOs, that’s the lowest rate since 2011, according to the study. In the United States or Canada, PwC said, the rate of new female CEOs declined for the third year, and dipped to its lowest point since 2004, when PwC began tracking the number. Just 1.1 percent of the new CEOs named to the job last year were women in PwC’s analysis of North American companies — down from 4 percent in 2014, 4.7 percent in 2013, and 7.3 percent in 2012. From crippling drought to record ice melt, scientist see signs of global warming speeding up.

Earth puts Paris in context

Nations to sign historic climate deal amid signs of accelerated warming

ENVIRONMENT The first three months of 2016 have been the hottest ever recorded, and by a large margin. Greenland’s massive ice sheet melted more this spring than researchers have ever seen. Warming seas are turning once-majestic coral reefs into ghostly underwater graveyards. And scientists are warning that sea levels could rise far faster than anyone expected by the end of the century, with severe impacts for coastal communities around the globe. That grim drumbeat of news will loom over the United Nations on Friday — Earth Day — when officials from more than

150 countries gather to sign a landmark agreement aimed at slashing global greenhouse gas emissions and slowing the warming of the planet. It simultaneously will be a moment of understandable celebration and sobering reality. The agreement, forged late last year after intense negotiations in a Paris suburb, has been hailed as a crucial milestone in putting the world’s nations on course to reduce reliance on fossil fuels in favor of cleaner, more sustainable forms of energy. But in the four months since that rare moment of global accord, the near-constant reminders about shifts in the Earth’s climate have underscored that staving off the worst consequences of global warming may require increasingly ambitious actions.

93%

“The strongest hurricane on record for both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere, unprecedented continuing drought in California, the warmest start to a year that we’ve ever seen, on the heels of what was the warmest full year on record for the globe,” Michael Mann, a climate researcher at Pennsylvania State University, ticked off. Although such developments are driven in part by strong El Nino conditions, he said, “we are at a critical juncture when it comes to preserving our climate.” There is general consensus that the Paris accord is both a rare and important milepost and, by itself, only a start to what must be a more aggressive effort over time. The overarching goal of the agreement is to bring down pollution levels so that the rise in

global temperatures remains below 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial averages. But meeting the global goal relies on each country fulfilling — and eventually increasing — its individual pledge. Paul Bledsoe, a former adviser on climate in the Clinton White House and now an independent energy and environmental consultant, said the drumbeat of troubling climate news should not overshadow the symbolic importance of Friday’s ceremony. “It really is a testament to a profound political evolution,” he said. “But we do have to recognize what it is and what it isn’t. It’s an incredibly important step that gets us halfway there, but it’s not in and of itself the ultimate solution.” CHRIS MOONEY AND BRADY DENNIS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

GREAT BARRIER REEF

The percentage of 911 coral reefs in the Great Barrier Reef found to suffer from bleaching, according to a survey by Australia’s National Coral Bleaching Task Force. Severe bleaching means that corals could die, depending on how long damaging conditions persist. High water temperatures are among factors that cause bleaching. Some scientists believe such extensive bleaching could be a sign of “dangerous” climate change caused by humans. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Fight in high school restroom in Wilmington, Del., leaves 16-year-old girl dead

Sophisticated nut heists prove tough to crack CRIME International crime rings targeting California’s booming agriculture industry are stealing truckloads of high-value nuts. The sophisticated organizations in many cases use high-tech tactics, hacking into trucking companies to steal their identities. Armed with false shipping papers, they pose as legitimate truckers, driving off with loads of nuts such as almonds, walnuts or pistachios worth up to $500,000 each. Days later, when a shipment fails to arrive at its intended destination, the nuts may already be in another state or on a ship destined for Europe or Asia, where they fetch top dollar on the black market, authorities say. Nut thefts hit an all-time high in California last year, with losses totaling $4.6 million from 31 known cases, more than the three previous years combined, according to CargoNet, an alliance of cargo shipping firms and law enforcement agencies. The value of nuts grown and processed in California have soared in recent years as global demand for the health-food snack grows overseas. The high value of nuts got the attention of criminal organizations, which are exploiting weaknesses in the cargo industry to reap big profits, FBI supervisor Dan Bryant said. “It’s not just some teenage kids ripping off nuts,” Bryant said. “These are sophisticated people.” SCOTT SMITH (AP)

The Capitals had just two power plays in Wednesday’s Game 4 loss to the Flyers.

THREE POINTERS

An update on ex-Nats

MATT SLOCUM (AP)

A few beloved homegrown Nationals players did not return to the team for various reasons this season. Here’s a look at how they are doing with their new clubs.

FLYERS AT CAPITALS | GAME 5: 7 P.M. FRIDAY, CSN

Weak at even strength

JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

3 Ian Desmond Rangers shortstop

This week, The Washington Post’s Barry Svrluga described Desmond this way: “He is, by some measures, the worst player in baseball.” So … things aren’t great.

NHL PLAYOFFS The Capitals figured their powerplay opportunities would be limited in Game 4 against the Flyers, but they didn’t count on such a lackluster performance from their offense at even strength. Washington’s inability to generate enough quality scoring chances at 5-on-5 through the first two periods of Game 4 is among the primary reason the Flyers avoided elimination with a 2-1 win Wednesday. The series returns to Verizon Center for Game 5 on Friday (7 p.m., CSN) with the Capitals leading the series 3-1. “We made a little adjustment in terms of what we were doing on the ice, but probably the biggest [change] — we only had to kill two power plays,” Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. “That’s quite a difference against that power play unit when you compare it to going out having to kill nine [in Game 3].” After watching the Capitals convert on 8 of 17 power plays in the first three games of the series, the Flyers were whistled

for just two minor penalties in Game 4, with Washington going 0-for-2 with the man advantage. Philadelphia built a 2-0 lead through the first two periods, while the Capitals barely tested Flyers goalie Michal Neuvirth, who was making his 2016 postseason debut. “I thought we made it a really easy night for him for the first two periods,” Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. “The third period we came with the effort that we’re going to need to have for 60 minutes in terms of getting to the interior, making plays, using our speed and playing fast.” The Capitals outshot the Flyers 13-4 in the final period with T.J. Oshie netting his first goal of the series. “The third period showed more of how we can play,” said goalie Braden Holtby, who missed a chance to tie Olaf Kolzig’s franchise record with 20 postseason wins. “When you leave it up to one period, sometimes it doesn’t work out. Game 5 is going to be

GETTY IMAGES

Capitals struggled to score in Game 4 with the Flyers staying out of the penalty box

Neuvirth returns to D.C. Nearly five years after Michal Neuvirth last started a playoff game, the former Capitals goalie stopped 31 of 32 shots in Philadelphia’s 2-1 Game 4 win. Former teammate Karl Alzner figures Neuvirth has plenty of motivation to make the most of facing his former team. “Neuvy is a guy that has a lot of pride and wants to prove to everybody that he’s a great goaltender and did that [Wednesday],” Alzner said. B.R.

one that we’re going to focus on playing all three periods, start to finish. That’ll give us the best chance.” Through the first four games of the series, the Capitals have outscored the Flyers 13-4, but they

have a modest 5-3 edge at even strength. With the Flyers having recognized that parading to the penalty box isn’t a recipe for success against one of the NHL’s top power play units, the Capitals need a more consistent effort at even strength to close out the series. “We’ve done enough,” Trotz said, “but we can do more, there’s no question.” In addition to an overall stronger game at even strength, the Capitals are looking to improve their play in the first period. Washington has fallen behind 1-0 in each of the last two games, and the Capitals have been outshot 53-30 in first periods this series. The Capitals also believe the Flyers should have been called for more penalties in Game 4, including a Brayden Schenn cross-check to the back of Evgeny Kuznetsov’s leg in the second period. “There should’ve been more power plays, but it’s out of our control,” Holtby said. “Hopefully the refs protect our players better.”

2 Drew Storen Blue Jays reliever

The slumping former closer still hasn’t regained his confidence. Entering Thursday, he had allowed five runs in 6⅓ innings.

1 Jordan Zimmermann Tiger starting pitcher

The one that got away — for a five-year, $110 million deal. The right-hander is 3-0 and hasn’t allowed a run in 19⅓ innings this season.

A PUBLICATION OF

It’s easy growing green With the proper lighting, keeping these plants alive is a breeze INTERIOR DESIGN There’s no such thing as bad plant parenting — just bad plant lighting. Often, people blame failing houseplants on their brown thumbs, when in reality it’s because the greens aren’t getting enough — or are getting too much — sunlight. “There’s a plant for every spot in your apartment. You just have to know where to put it,” says Tom Hammond, a D.C.-based garden designer and employee at Ginkgo Gardens in Capitol Hill. Yes, a fresh set of curtains or a new carpet will easily brighten up your place — and will never die. Still, it’s worth introducing greenery. “Houseplants bring life to a space,” Hammond says. “You feel a sense of satisfaction from getting something to grow and do well.” We rounded up a variety of plants that will thrive based on which direction your windows face.

Begin your plant search at one of these local garden stores. H.S.

North-facing and basements Because windows with northern exposure get the least amount of sunlight throughout the day, you have better chances of keeping a goldfish alive than most plants. Enter the low-maintenance ZZ plant. Its waxy leaves don’t need much sunlight — and require only weekly water — to survive.

South-facing If you have the luxury of a sunny south-facing window, consider succulents and cacti. The fleshy plants are native to the desert, where they sunbathe all day and get spurts of heavy rain. Water them thoroughly but rarely — about twice a month. Aloe is particularly resilient and doubles as a salve for cuts and burns.

East-facing East-facing windows get naturally diffused light, which is comfortable for most plants. Your options are many, though consider the so-hot-right-now fiddle leaf fig. Its ruffled leaves fill up voids in your apartment while the branches

West-facing Western exposure gets slightly more intense sunlight than eastfacing windows, so it tends to be warmer. Opt for a plant comfortable with light and heat, such as a rubber plant. The India-born bush also loves humid environments, so keep its soil consistently moist and mist the leaves often. HOLLEY SIMMONS (EXPRESS)

Wizards to hire Brooks

He coached coveted free agent-to-be Durant 7 years with Thunder

GETTY IMAGES DAVE SANDFORD (GETTY IMAGES)

WIZARDS The Wizards and Scott Brooks have agreed in principle on a five-year deal worth $35 million for Brooks to become the team’s head coach, according to people with knowledge of the situation. Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld and Vice President Tommy Sheppard traveled to Southern California on Wednesday to meet with Brooks, 50, who became the clear favorite for the job when news trickled out earlier that day that their top target, former Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, would become the Timberwolves’ coach and president of basketball operations. Grunfeld returned to Washington on a red-eye flight early Thursday without an agreement in place, but Sheppard stayed in California and met with Brooks again Thursday. Brooks is the only person the Wizards met with about the position, according to people with knowledge of the situation. The $7 million annual salary is more than double what the Wizards paid their previous coach, Randy Wittman, the past two seasons and hints at the importance the franchise is placing on the position as they enter a pivotal phase. The salary would make Brooks one of the six highest-paid coaches

in the NBA and would equal Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle as the highest-paid NBA coach among those who don’t double as president of basketball operations for their respective organizations. Brooks will take over just as the Wizards begin one of the most important offseasons in franchise history with a connection that is impossible to ignore: He coached Thunder superstar Kevin Durant for seven seasons and the two are said to have a good relationship. Durant will be an unrestricted free agent this summer, and the Wizards, who have meticulously created the salary cap space to sign him, are going to throw themselves at the Washington area native when the clock strikes midnight on July 1.

A PROVEN WINNER

.620

The winning percentage of Scott Brooks as the coach of the Thunder. He had a 338-207 record in seven seasons and led Oklahoma City to the postseason five times. (EXPRESS)

If Brooks can improve Washington’s chances of landing Durant, that’s a bonus on top of his other credentials from the Thunder: three appearances in the NBA conference finals and one in the NBA Finals; a players’ coach with experience cultivating young, top-tier talent; and architect of one of the league’s top

defenses. Those three qualities — experience, player development and a defense-first approach — are what the Wizards, who have a nucleus centered around John Wall, 25, and Bradley Beal, 22, have prioritized. There are drawbacks, of course. The consensus around the league is that Durant isn’t coming to Washington; Brooks didn’t win a title with one of the league’s most talented rosters; and, much like Wittman in Washington, his rotations and offenses drew frequent criticism. But during his year away from coaching Brooks visited different teams. Whether Durant comes or not, Brooks was always clearly their top choice. JORGE CASTILLO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Harper homers, but Scherzer struggles

Max Scherzer took a thumping against a makeshift Marlins lineup, giving up five runs in five innings to absorb his first loss of the year as the Nationals fell 5-1 at Miami on Thursday afternoon. Bryce Harper, left, hit his eighth home run, boosting his MLB-leading RBIs total to 22. But the Nationals totaled only two hits, and none after Wilson Ramos’ infield single to start the second. Four Miami relievers combined to retire Washington 1-2-3 in each of the final four innings. “It was kind of a flat day,” Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. (AP)

For D.C. United, bad habits are tough to break D.C. UNITED Last Saturday, D.C. United reverted back to some bad habits from 2015, when the club had a tendency to give up early goals. Toronto FC ‘s Sebastian Giovinco scored just 57 seconds into Saturday’s game at RFK Stadium. It would end up being the game’s only goal as United lost 1-0 and fell to 1-3-3. Last year, United gave up a goal inside the first six minutes seven times. In one late-season stretch, the club conceded goals inside of two minutes in three of four home matches. United coach Ben Olsen, who grew weary of attempting to answer for his team’s early-game struggles in 2015, again was at a loss after Saturday’s game. “We don’t go out and say, ‘Hey, we can take the first five minutes off, right?’ ” Olsen said. “They’ve heard me yell and scream enough about it. We have to get better in that aspect.” Right back Sean Franklin was equally disappointed. “We can’t come out on our home field and let someone score in the first minute, let alone at all,” he said. “It’s just frustrating.” United looks to fix its earlygame struggles when it hosts the New England Revolution on Saturday (5:30 p.m., ABC7). A short-lived retirement for UFC star McGregor

Players worry about Zika for games in Puerto Rico

Conor McGregor, 27, is not retired and he’s even willing to resume his spot in the main event at UFC 200. He said he simply is fed up with the promotional demands that come with being a pay-per-view star. On Thursday, he posted on Facebook that he needed to focus on himself and not the massive hype that accompanies his mega-fights. McGregor, who this week tweeted he was retiring, has been training for a rematch against Nate Diaz at UFC 200 on July 9 in Las Vegas. UFC President Dana White said McGregor had been pulled from UFC 200 because of the dispute over promotional appearances. (AP)

Players from the Marlins and Pirates, citing the Zika virus, have expressed concerns about playing their two-game series next month in Puerto Rico. MLB officials said Thursday they expect the games to be played as scheduled May 30-31. But the teams, MLB and the players’ union are continuing discussions about the series, and union head Tony Clark described the health and safety concerns as serious. “We recognize the importance of the trip,” Marlins pitcher Craig Breslow said. “But at the same time, our health and the health of our families is paramount.” (AP)

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Thursday that if the league is to keep the 2017 All-Star Game in Charlotte it will require a change in the controversial North Carolina law passed last month. “We’ve been, I think, crystal clear, that a change in the law is necessary to play in the kind of environment that we think is appropriate for a celebratory NBA event,” Silver said during a meeting in New York with The Associated Press Sports Editors. This was the first time that Silver stated that if there are no changes to the law, which requires transgender individuals to use public restrooms that correspond with the sex listed on their birth certificates, the league would be unable to hold the game there. PRINCE ROGERS NELSON | 1958-2016

MICHAEL OCHS ARCHIVES (GETTY IMAGES)

Purple majesty Nothing compared to Prince, the revolutionary pop superstar who forever changed music

Mourning Prince ”Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent. As one of the most gifted and prolific musicians of our time, Prince did it all.” CHRIS O’MEARA (AP)

APPRECIATION The most significant scene in “Purple Rain” — the 1984 blockbuster that introduced Prince to the entirety of America — comes deep in the action when the young maestro finally strolls onstage to unleash the film’s transcendent title track. As the camera pans across the crowd, we see Jheri-curled funk dudes, Aqua Net glam girls, mulleted wastoids, preps and punks. And that’s exactly who Prince wanted to see when he looked out into this vicious world: a radical congregation of disparate individuals being different, being together, being free. Whether we’ve gotten any closer to that purple paradise over the past three decades is up for debate, but here’s what isn’t: Modernity has produced no greater pop star than Prince. The unexpected news of his death on Thursday at the age of 57 certainly felt cruel to anyone who has ever believed in music as a force of enlightenment. This man was a superhero who summoned humanity onto a new

dance floor with an effortlessly utopian swirl of funk, soul and rock ’n’ roll. He was a visionary songwriter, a top-shelf guitarist, a master-architect of rhythm, a breath-stealing vocalist, and an unparalleled tornado of a live performer. Since his auspicious debut in 1978, he projected a mysterious, enduring invincibility. And now he’s gone. The shock is enough to make your brain go blank. Prince died at his home/studio Paisley Park in the Minneapolis

suburb of Chanhassen. The cause was not immediately known. He was found unresponsive Thursday morning in an elevator by sheriff’s deputies who had been called to the compound. On April 7, Prince had postponed a concert in Atlanta after contracting the flu, and he apologized to fans during a makeup concert last week. Early on, Prince told us who he was through his music, and who he wasn’t through his lyrics. On 1981’s “Controversy,” he asked, “Am I black or white? Am

I straight or gay?” On 1984’s “I Would Die 4 U,” he sang back, “I’m not a woman, I’m not a man, I am something that you’ll never understand.” He was issuing bold challenges to how our society thought about racial and sexual identity, and he made it feel absolutely ecstatic. When “Little Red Corvette” became his first major hit in 1982, it was one of the first songs by a black artist to be in regular rotation on MTV. His 1984 album “Purple Rain” won two Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for best original song score. Across his career, Prince’s virtuosity felt like an expression of commitment to his idealism. His musical generosity is the thing that pulled everyone into the same room, and once we were all inside, he kept giving. You can feel this most easily during the outro of “Purple Rain,” perhaps Prince’s best-known song. That guitar solo. That singalong. The music wants to last forever, but it knows it can’t. Prince was playing it just 10 months ago at one of the most thrilling concerts I’d ever seen — a relatively intimate gig at Washington’s Warner Theatre that found the 57-year-old peacocking around the stage, leaping off amps like a man half his age. This wasn’t aging-rock-star behavior. It wasn’t mortal behavior. Halfway through that gig, Prince spoke about how pleased he was to have performed a hushhush concert at the White House the previous evening. So it’s easy to imagine that camera from “Purple Rain” on an uninterrupted pan across the great dance floor of time — past the Minneapolis party people of 1984, past the countless musical minds that Prince has blown since, past you, past me, past the leaders of the free world, past everybody, all together. That’s how Prince wanted us to be. That’s how we are today. T h a t ’s h o w w e s h o u l d try harder to be tomorrow. CHRIS RICHARDS (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Cold ‘War’: What happens next will not surprise you I skipped my run on Tuesday, but it was fine. I got more than enough of a workout rolling my eyes at “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.” It’s not that “Huntsman” (a prequel/sequel that skips over the events of its 2012 prologue/ epilogue, “Snow White and the Huntsman”) is a bad movie. I mean, it is — even Chris Hemsworth’s immensely likable eyetwinkling can’t change the fact that it’s a movie that achieves

nothing through its entirely unnecessary existence. Its biggest problem isn’t that it’s pointless, though; it’s that it’s predictable. And I mean completely, entirely, utterly predictable, even for those who, like me, didn’t see the first film. Think of it this way: My editor says that if a reader can figure out the end of a sentence before he or she gets there, I need to write a new banana. “The Huntsman” is a string of sentences that anyone who is familiar with any story ever

told can figure out long before reaching the period. Little kids who have trouble following “Goodnight Moon” know that when characters cross a suspension bridge while ominous music plays, that bridge won’t be standing much longer. (It doesn’t help that the story is partly inspired by the fairy tale “The Snow Queen,” which was also the inspiration for “Frozen,” which means poor Emily Blunt’s Queen Freya just reads as an Elsa knockoff.) Predictable is the worst thing a movie can be, because it reduces the viewer to a simple, passive agent in what should be an active conversation. Your brain should be churning when you watch a movie, engaged with the characters and the action and the images (unless you’re really tired and just want to space out and watch “Center Stage” again, which, have at

it). When you know exactly where the story is headed, the movie experience becomes not a journey, but a commute — a way of moving through two hours that leaves you in a place you’ve been to repeatedly. People often dismiss a movie as “formulaic,” but formulas can be really handy. We get dynamite through the use of a formula, and we can make dynamite do really cool things depending on where we place it. Of course some movies follow a form, but being sure a romantic comedy will end with a kiss doesn’t mean you know every step it’ll take to get there. That’s the problem with “Huntsman”: It had the formula for dynamite, but instead of using it to blast open a new way, it let the wick fizzle and walked down an old, tired path. “Green Room,” starring Patrick Stewart, can be fun to watch. With guns, blades and dogs to instigate the bloodshed, it manifests a modicum of creativity. But the wheels of this narrative and the well-worn ruts in which they run are well-traveled. Director Jeremy Saulnier’s artistry is undeniable, but it’s in service of a story that goes nowhere new. The kids of “Sing Street” are not going to let things like not being able to sing or play instruments stop their band.

‘Sing Street’ keeps its heart finely tuned Boy meets girl, boy forms band in this sweetly charming film FILM REVIEW With “Once,” “Begin Again” and now “Sing Street,” the Irish writer-director John Carney has been reliably churning out beguiling, music-driven idylls steeped in winsome emotion. Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) is a teenager living in Dublin in the 1980s; music is less a passion with him than with his idolized older brother Brendan (Jack Reynor). But when Conor is forced to attend a rough public school — and he spies a pretty girl across the way — he impulsively decides to form a band. “Sing Street” follows the adventures of Conor as he hustles to turn a bunch of merry misfits into a bona fide group, achieve local fame (if not fortune) and maybe, just maybe, get the girl. With a formula as tried-andtrue as this one, it’s crucial that the characters inhabiting it be both authentic and novel. Carney has hit the jackpot with

‘Sing Street’ (PG-13, 106 minutes) DIRECTOR: John Carney STARS: Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Jack Reynor, Lucy Boynton IN A NUTSHELL: In 1980s Ireland, a

boy and a bunch of his misfit friends form a band to attract the attention of a classmate.

Walsh-Peelo, who brings soulful innocence and nascent sex appeal to a shy kid who’s discovering his inner rock star. Lucy Boynton, who plays Conor’s unattainable love interest, Raphina, delivers an equally accomplished portrayal of a wounded, secretly innocent girl masquerading as a tough chick with teased hair and jungle-red lipstick. “Sing Street” has a great deal of fun with Raphina’s changing looks, as well as Conor’s endless experiments with his own persona, whether he’s copying Nick Rhodes’ eye makeup or hairstyles from the Cure. But Carney is careful to avoid pastiche for its own sake. Underneath the in-jokes and playful

musical interludes — including songwriting sessions Conor conducts at a bandmate’s house overrun with pet rabbits — the pain of bullied, abused and misunderstood teenagers grappling with divorce, abuse, neglect and blinkered prospects is always gently palpable. Although “Sing Street” seems to have been reverse-engineered in order to be called “charming” in reviews, it has its decidedly un-charming moments, such as when the band’s pint-size manager (Ben Carolan) makes an offensive quip about all black people being able to play music, then carefully enunciates his words to a black character he assumes doesn’t speak English. Thankfully, such tone-deaf moments are rare in “Sing Street,” which offers filmgoers a coming-of-age portrait that is both endearing and admirably free of cheap sentiment. Warm, ingratiating, with a beat you can dance to, “Sing Street” is a feel-good movie that never demands to be liked. Instead it asks, politely and irresistibly. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The week’s best movie previews

‘Jason Bourne’

‘The Girl on the Train’

EXPECTED RELEASE: July 29

EXPECTED RELEASE: Oct. 7

SUMMARY: Matt Damon returns as Bourne, the super-spy with memory problems. He’s reteaming with Nicky (Julia Stiles) to figure out his place in the world, using a strategy that encompasses punching, shooting, jumping, carchasing, running, Molotov cocktail-dropping, improbable surviving and pensive brooding.

SUMMARY: Based on the book that you either read or still mean to get around to reading eventually, “The Girl on the Train” stars Emily Blunt as a woman who maybe murdered another woman but doesn’t remember, or murdered her deliberately, or didn’t murder her at all. Then she is sad because everyone will compare this movie to “Gone Girl.” K.P.K.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’ll be doing more for someone than you had agreed to do, but there’s nothing wrong with that. You’ll be compensated fairly. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Someone shows an interest in your overall emotional well-being. Perhaps he or she is someone you can really confide in — at last. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’re in a position to do something helpful for someone who seems to be lacking both a plan and resources. Don’t do too much, however. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may not know what someone is really trying to do when he or she tells you a secret, but the motive doesn’t matter as much as the information conveyed. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Unlike Leo, you’ll be caught up in a conflict that arises out of motive. Yours is pure, but can you say the same for a rival?

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may find yourself back-stepping throughout much of the day. When the time is right, you can make up for lost ground. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Very little is permanent, so you needn’t fear any negative developments. All you have to do is wait them out patiently, and move on.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’re confident that what you have started can be finished. Still, you may have to take it down to the wire.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) What appears on the horizon will be worth a close look when it is in plain view. Your future is taking shape in a new way. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll

be able to share some rare knowledge with those who have agreed to help you with a current project — and they do need instruction.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may be somewhat overwhelmed by the volume of work you are facing. This time, you have signed up for one too many projects.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You are in no mood to concede any major points to a rival, so he or she can expect you to stay fully in the fight.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Ripa was seen prominently holding a book: Malcolm Gladwell’s “David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants.” According to the publisher, the book is about understanding and navigating the struggles “between underdogs and giants.” (EXPRESS)
