Talk about a child’s sense of adventure: Outback police in Australia on Saturday arrested a 12-yearold who was trying to drive solo across the continent. He had gone 800 miles — almost a third of the way — when police stopped him because his car’s bumper was dragging. The Telegraph of London reported that he avoided suspicion because, as a gas station manager put it, he is 6 feet tall and looks “maybe 19 or 20.” (EXPRESS)

A forest ranger in India was hurt last week when he helped a village stop a roaming leopard. Authorities said a 12-hour hunt was launched in the village of Kuruli to capture a leopard that had wandered into town and was prowling inside and on top of homes, UPI reported. FAIRFAX COUNTY The pressure was on for Abdul Gouda and his classmates at George Mason University: Not only did their graduation depend on the success of their project, but so did the hopes of an impossibly cute 10-year-old girl. Fifth-grader Isabella Nicola wanted to play the violin, but she was born with no left hand and a severely abbreviated forearm. Her music teacher at Island Creek Elementary in Fairfax County had built her a prosthetic allowing her to move the bow with her left arm and finger the strings with her right — the opposite of how violin is usually taught. But the prosthetic was heavy and he thought there might be a better option. He reached out to Mason, his alma mater. As it happened, Gouda and his four teammates in the bioengineering department were in the market for a project — students are required to take on a capstone project their senior year. The team — Gouda, Mona Elkholy, Ella Novoselsky, Racha

Salha and Yasser Alhindi — developed multiple prototypes throughout the year. There was a fair amount of literature on similar projects that helped them get a good start, but Isabella’s case is unique to her, and the project included plenty of trial and error. Isabella communicated easily with the group and provided feedback, especially about the weight. The first version came in at 13 ounces; the final one shaved an ounce or two off of that after feedback from Isabella.

“It’s sort of a lot of pressure. You’ve got this young girl who’s counting on you and you’re expected to deliver.” ABDUL GOUDA, a senior at George Mason University, who helped to design and build a prosthetic arm for 10-year-old violinist Isabella Nicola

On Thursday, Isabella received her final prosthetic, built using a 3-D printer, in hot pink (at her request), with “Isabella’s attachment” emblazoned on the forearm. She played some scales as she adjusted the fit, and even a few bars of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.” “Oh, my gosh, that’s so much better,” Isabella said as she tried out the new prosthetic. And the team had a surprise for her, a plug-in attachment designed to let her grip a handlebar and ride a bicycle. “I feel very blessed that I have this amazing group of people,” Isabella said. Isabella had her heart set on playing music when the school began offering strings lessons in fourth grade. “I’ve never told her no. I told her we would try. There was no guarantee the school would be able to do an adaptation,” said her mother, Andrea Cabrera. “Through these little miracles, it kept going forward.” Isabella never had any doubt it would come together. “I felt right away that I’d be able to play,” she said. “I’ve always had perseverance.” MATTHEW BARAKAT (AP)

Smoky blaze shuts U-Md. Firefighters battle one of the largest fires in Prince George’s history

April on track to be warmest on record in D.C.

RICKY CARIOTI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

COLLEGE PARK, MD. A five-alarm fire swept through the construction site of a highr ise apa r tment i n P r i nce George’s County on Monday morning, saturating an area of College Park with so much smoke that a nearby apartment with many seniors was evacuated and the University of Maryland was closed. The fire brought a historic response for the county and involved more than 200 firefighters from across the region, who began arriving at the scene around 10:30 a.m. while other units backfilled for routine calls as more alarms went out, according to Prince George’s acting Fire Chief Benjamin M. Barksdale. Barksdale said the fire-suppression effort was one of the largest in the county’s history, if not the largest. He said the department had poured thousands of gallons of water onto the building. The smoke lingered into early evening as the investigation continued in the 4700 block of Berwyn House Road in College Park, where the fire broke out on the fifth and sixth floors of a nearly completed seven-story building. Its sprinkler systems were not yet in service, according to fire officials. Two firefighters had ad minor o injuries, ju es, Barksdale a sda e

said. One firefighter was taken to a hospital to be treated for “overexertion.” Mabel Thomas, 75, was one of about 40 residents of Spellman House, across the street from the fire, who was moved to the community room of a nearby apartment building. She said she had smelled smoke from inside her fifth-floor apartment and went to her window but could see nothing but gray outside. “It looked like living in a foggy city,” she said. A partial roof collapse and the building’s “doughnut” shape — with four facades surrounding a courtyard — made it difficult to get water on the blaze, and fire authorities said they were

concerned the building could collapse. “There is a lot of wood in this building,” Barksdale said, adding that empty spaces in the building made it easy for fire to travel. University of Maryland President Wallace D. Loh said in a Twitter message that he was closing the school’s campus at 1 p.m. due to “poor air quality” from the fire. Barksdale said people living or working near the fire “should be okay” if they turned off their heating and cooling systems to avoid the smoke, but that cloudy weather was preventing the smoke from clearing out. I n a T witter message, Prince George’s County Fire

Department spokesman Mark Brady said the incident was “one of, if not the, largest fire suppression efforts in County history.” “That’s not something you see within Prince George’s County,” Brady said. “Typically, when we deal with a fire, it’s one- or two-alarm, it’s out quickly, and everyone’s going home.” Fire personnel would remain on the scene into this morning, Brady said, and damage will be in the millions of dollars. Barksdale said the building, which was to include both housing and retail, had been expected to have residents moving in by mid-May. JUSTIN WM. MOYER AND CLARENCE WILLIAMS (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

WEATHER Even with the recent spate of raw, overcast weather, the District is having its warmest April on record. With another round of summery weather forecast for Thursday to Sunday, it is virtually a lock that the month will end in the warmest position. D.C.’s April temperatures have more closely resembled what’s normal in Memphis, Tenn. Through Sunday, D.C.’s average temperature this month was 62.4 degrees, 6.7 degrees warmer than normal. 1981 was the next-warmest year in the rankings this deep into the month, with an average temperature of 61.6 degrees. With high temperatures only in the 50s to near 60 on Monday and today, the average temperature will drop. But by Wednesday, conditions return to close to normal. What should seal the deal to make April the warmest month in recorded history is the stretch of very warm weather predicted Thursday through Sunday. Each day should hit at least 80 degrees, and we could even flirt with 90 over the weekend. The wild card is the position of a backdoor cold front that could briefly bring cooler conditions to the region Saturday. But Monday’s models have backed away from that idea. This weekend’s weather may feel more like the middle of July. In other words, the month may end with sauna conditions. JASON SAMENOW (TWP)

Because of threats, police protected workers Monday who dismantled the Liberty Place monument before dawn.

New Orleans removes a monument to racism City also will take down three statues saluting Confederate leaders NEW ORLEANS A monument to a deadly whitesupremacist uprising in 1874 was removed under cover of darkness by workers in masks and bulletproof vests Monday as New Orleans joined the movement to take down symbols of the Confederacy and the Jim Crow South. The Liberty Place monument, a 35-foot granite obelisk that honors whites who tried to topple a biracial Reconstruction government installed in the city after the Civil War, was taken away on a truck in pieces before daybreak. With lega l cha llenges

overcome, the city will also remove statues of Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and P.G.T. Beauregard and Confederate President Jefferson Davis. “We will no longer allow the Confederacy to literally be put on a pedestal in the heart of our city,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. The removal of the obelisk was carried out early in the morning because of death threats and fears of disruption from supporters of the monuments. The workers wore militarystyle helmets and had scarves over their faces. Police were on hand, with officers watching from atop a hotel parking garage. “The statue was put up to honor the killing of police officers by white supremacists,”

Landrieu said. “Of the four that we will move, this statue is perhaps the most blatant affront to the values that make America and New Orleans strong today.” Citi ng sa fet y concer ns, Landrieu would not say when the other monuments would be taken down. He said they would be stored until an appropriate place to display them is determined. New Orleans is a mostly black city of nearly 390,000. The majority-black City Council voted 6-1 in 2015 to take the monuments down, but legal battles caused delays. The debate over Confederate symbols has flared since nine black parishioners were killed by an avowed racist at a church in Charleston, S.C., in 2015. JESSE J. HOLLAND AND GERALD HERBERT (AP)

A white oak tree that has watched over a New Jersey community and a church for hundreds of years began its final bow Monday as crews began its removal and residents fondly remembered the go-to spot for photos. Crews at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church in Bernards began taking down the 600-year-old tree, which was declared dead after it began showing rot and weakness over the last couple of years. Officials say the tree was the site of a picnic Gen. George Washington held with the Marquis de Lafayette. Arborists say the tree had stood for nearly 300 years before the church was built in 1717. Millennials earn less today than boomers in ‘75 The United States has enjoyed extraordinary economic progress over the past four decades, but average incomes for today’s young workers are lower than they were in 1975. Over the past four decades, young American workers saw their average incomes decline by 5.5 percent after adjusting for inflation, according to figures published last week by the U.S. Census Bureau. In 1975, workers aged 25 to 34 had a median personal income of $37,000 in modern dollar terms. In 2016, it was $35,000. Earnings have declined despite the fact that today’s young people are better educated. Thirty-seven percent of young people had a bachelor’s degree last year, compared to 22.8 percent in 1975. Experts say that a more unequal economy presents fewer opportunities for younger workers. Also, young people today must compete with a well-educated labor force, while young people in the past often had an advantage over older workers who were less qualified. Yet the decline also represents progress, because it is partly a result of gains among young women, who have joined the workforce in high numbers. But because they still earn less than young men, their entrance has driven down the average wage for young workers. MAX EHRENFREUND

Trump’s heavy TV diet For a president who’s glued to the tube, ‘that guy gets great ratings’ is a glowing endorsement

Astronaut sets record, talks up Mars with Trump

JUSTIN SULLIVAN (GETTY IMAGES)

MEDIA During a small working lunch at the White House last month, the question of job security in President Trump’s tumultuous White House came up, and one of the attendees wondered whether press secretary Sean Spicer might be the first to go. The president’s response was swift and unequivocal. “I’m not firing Sean Spicer,” he said, according to someone familiar with the encounter. “That guy gets great ratings. Everyone tunes in.” For Trump, TV is often the guiding force of his day. And the president’s obsession with the tube has upended the traditional rhythms of the White House. Trump’s tweet-storms, which contain some of his most controversial utterances, are usually prompted by something he has seen on TV just moments before. The president, advisers said, also uses details gleaned from cable news as a starting point for policy discussions or a request for more information. Some White House officials have started tuning into Fox News’ “Fox & Friends” because they know the president habitually clicks it on after waking up. Foreign diplomats have urged their governments’ leaders to appear on television when they’re stateside as a means of making their case to Trump, and U.S. lawmakers regard a TV appearance as nearly on par with an Oval Office meeting in terms of showcasing their standing or viewpoints to the president. Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., said Trump’s intense monitoring cuts both ways. “At times, it’ll lead to mistakes,”

Many politicians think that appearing on cable news is a key way to get Trump’s attention.

he said. “Other times, it lets him move with astounding speed.” Explaining his decision to launch 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Syrian air base, Trump even cited, publicly and privately, the gruesome images of dead and dying Syrian children poisoned with the nerve agent sarin, images that dominated TV for several days. Trump turns on the television almost as soon as he wakes, then checks in periodically throughout the day in the small dining room off the Oval Office, and continues late into the evening when he’s back in his private residence. His interest in TV has proved a welcome — and at times surprising — point of entry to the White House for lawmakers and even pundits. Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, D-Md., once appealed to Trump directly on “Morning Joe,” addressing the camera to implore the president to call him so the

“It’s the highest for ‘Face the Nation’ or as I call it, ‘Deface the Nation’ … since the World Trade Center came down.” PRESIDENT TRUMP, bragging about being able to lift a TV show’s ratings. In an interview with The Associated Press released Sunday, Trump said he helped the CBS Sunday morning talk show score 5.2 million viewers, although it was not clear which appearance he was referencing.

two could chat about prescription drugs. A day or so later, Cummings said, the president himself responded. “I was a little surprised that he called — I thought his secretary would call, but he actually called,” Cummings said. “But it’s the way he operates.”

White House official: Trump wants to lower corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 15 percent

Gingrich added that sometimes after an appearance on “Fox & Friends,” he’ll have just left the studio and not even reached his car when his cellphone will ring — the president calling to tell him, “That was good.” But not everyone appreciates Trump’s television obsession. Rick Wilson, a veteran Republican consultant and vocal Trump critic, said a number of Republicans in Congress find the president’s habits bizarre to the point of alarming, although they rarely say so publicly because they do not want to draw his wrath. “There are many conversations where it ends: ‘But of course, God knows, he could watch Fox News tomorrow and change his whole position,’ ” Wilson said. “They don’t get him, because he’s a creature of television and they’re creatures of politics. They care about the details; he cares about what’s on TV.” ASHLEY PARKER AND ROBERT COSTA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

SPACE Astronaut Peggy Whitson broke the U.S. record Monday for most time in space and talked up Mars during a congratulatory call from President Trump. The International Space Station’s commander surpassed the record of 534 days, two hours and 48 minutes for most accumulated time in space by an American. Whitson said it’s “a huge honor” to break such a record. “It’s an exciting time” as NASA prepares for human expeditions to Mars in the 2030s, included in new legislation signed by Trump last month. She called the space station “a key bridge” between Earth and deep space. Whitson already was the world’s most experienced spacewoman and female spacewalker and, at 57, the oldest woman in space. Whitson told the president that spaceflight takes a lot of time and money, so getting to Mars will require collaboration from other countries to succeed. NASA is building the hardware right now to test a new rocket that will carry astronauts farther from Earth than ever before, she said. “Well, we want to try and do it during my first term or, at worst, during my second term, so we’ll have to speed that up a little bit, OK?” Trump responded. “We’ll do our best,” Whitson replied. The debut of the mega-rocket is still more than a year away — at least. MARCIA DUNN (AP)

nation+world In unannounced visit, defense chief suggests Russia is arming Taliban KABUL, AFGHANISTAN Defense Secretary Jim Mattis arrived for a surprise visit to Afghanistan on Monday, as the Trump administration considers boosting U.S. military support for a conflict that commanders say has degenerated into a stalemate. The visit, Mattis’ first as defense secretary, comes just days after a devastating Taliban attack on one of Afghanistan’s largest and most secure bases killed up to 200 soldiers — leading to the resignation Monday of the country’s Army chief and defense minister. The brazen

attack Friday was the largest ever carried out by the Taliban against the military. Speaking to reporters alongside Mattis, Gen. John Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, said the level of sophistication in Friday’s attack made it “quite possible” that the gunmen were linked to the Haqqani network, a Taliban faction based in Pakistan. Mattis also said the U.S. must confront Russia for providing weapons to the Taliban for use against American-backed forces in Afghanistan. Mattis wouldn’t provide specifics about Russia’s role in Afghanistan but said he would “not refute” that Moscow’s involvement includes giving weapons to the Taliban.

Emmanuel Macron has never held elected office, but most of the political establishment in France and the EU favors him over Marine Le Pen of the far right.

Support pours in for Macron

Ahead of France’s May 7 runoff election, moderates rally to block far-right Le Pen PARIS France’s established parties are rallying around the man who helped shut them out of the presidential runoff, maverick centrist Emmanuel Macron — an alliance of convenience aimed at keeping far-right Marine Le Pen out of the Elysee Palace. Support for Macron also poured in Monday from the seat of the European Union, as well as from German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Jewish and Muslim groups troubled by Le Pen’s nationalist vision. For all the paeans to Macron’s unifying vision in divided times, it is now up to French voters to decide whether to entrust him with this nuclear-armed nation in the May 7 presidential runoff.

Polls consider him the front-runner, but that’s no guarantee that the French will come together to stop Le Pen the way they stopped her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, from reaching the presidency in 2002. She has already drawn far more support than he ever did. Politicians on the moderate left and right, including French President Francois Hollande and the losing Socialist and Republican party candidates in Sunday’s first-round vote, maneuvered to block Le Pen’s path to power. In an address from the palace, Hollande said he would vote for Macron, his former economy minister, because Le Pen represents “both the danger of the isolation of France and of rupture with the European Union.”

Hollande said the far right would “deeply divide France” at a time when the threat of terrorism requires solidarity. Voters narrowed the French presidential field from 11 to two in Sunday’s vote, and losers from across the spectrum called on their supporters to choose Macron in round two. Only the defeated far-left candidate, JeanLuc Melenchon, pointedly refused to back Macron. The contest is widely seen as a litmus test for the populist wave that last year prompted Brexit and Donald Trump’s presidency. Le Pen, meanwhile, is hoping to peel away voters historically opposed to her National Front Party, long tainted by racism and anti-Semitism. On Monday, she took a step in that direction, announcing she was temporarily stepping down as party leader.

“Tonight, I am no longer the president of the National Front. I am the presidential candidate,” she said on French public television news. National Front party officials also joined the chorus, noting that a vote for Le Pen would be a natural move for those fed up with the status quo. “The voters who voted for Mr. Melenchon are angry voters. They can be in agreement with us,” said Steeve Brios, the mayor of Le Pen’s northern bastion of Henin-Beaumont. Voters rejected the two mainstream parties that have alternated power for decades in favor of Le Pen and Macron, who has never held elected office and who founded his own political movement just last year. Macron came in first Sunday, with just over 24 percent. Le Pen had 21.3 percent. ANGELA CHARLTON AND ELAINE GANLEY (AP)

Wall is barrier to budget deal, Democrats say POLITICS President Trump could avert the risk of a government shutdown Saturday by retreating from his demand that lawmakers fund his promised border wall in a vital spending bill, Congress’ two top Democrats said Monday. “If the president stepped out of it, we could get a budget done by Friday,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed. She said that while Trump had promised during his campaign to build the barrier on the Mexican border, “He did not promise that he would take food out of the mouths of babies” and cut programs for seniors, education and the environment to pay for it. The government will run out of money at the end of Friday unless lawmakers pass legislation financing federal agencies. White House officials and leaders of both parties have said they don’t want a government shutdown. But administration officials have continued to demand that lawmakers include money for the wall in the spending bill, and the proposal has emerged as the biggest barrier to an agreement. Trump said during his campaign that Mexico would pay for the wall, expected to cost tens of billions of dollars. Mexican officials have refused — although Trump vows they will relent — so the White House is seeking taxpayer money to start it. CATHERINE LUCEY AND HOPE YEN (AP)

Neonicotinoid Pesticides species. Some states, cities, and retailers have already placed restrictions on neonics due to environmental concerns, as have some European countries. American Bird Conservancy is calling for a ban on neonic-coated seeds, and for a moratorium on other uses while data is gathered to determine the full impacts. Join us in asking the EPA to open the public comment periods on their recent neonic risk assessments.

Are Neonics Effective?

The Environment at Risk

Neonics are similar in chemical structure to nicotine and are neuro-toxic to insects, earthworms, birds, and other wildlife. They are persistent in the environment, and recent studies suggest adverse human health impacts. A single treated seed can kill a songbird, and even tiny quantities can impact bird reproduction.

Neonics are sprayed on crops, injected into trees, or coated onto seeds.

Neonics are used as a preemptive strike, killing both pests and beneficial insects. Today, they are applied to more than 100 million acres in the U.S. each year, and for some crops, farmers now have little choice but to buy neoniccoated seeds. EPA has already acknowledged uncertainties regarding the environmental effects of neonics, but has yet to conduct a full risk evaluation for birds or endangered

Seed spillage: a single coated seed can kill a songbird.

Seed fragments, dust, and sprays spread neonics into soils and wetlands.

Neonics in the seed coating spread throughout the plant.

Neonics in Your Lunch Today? Unlike many conventional pesticides, you cannot wash neonics off—they are integrated into the plant itself. We tested a range of fruits and vegetables purchased in congressional cafeterias and found neonics in more than 90% of the samples.

The problems extend well beyond bees... Neonicotinoid (neonic) pesticides were developed in the 1980s and have since become the most used insecticides in the world. Their impacts on bees have been widely reported, but there’s much more to know:

abcbirds.org

Neonics can poison or kill off birds’ food supplies.

American Bird Conservancy (ABC), a not-for-profit organization, is dedicated to conserving birds and their habitats throughout the Americas. Our Pesticides and Birds Campaign has been protecting birds from pesticide poisoning since 1998. Support ABC’s work to protect birds from pesticides and other threats. Donate at www.abcbirds.org.

Many studies have found that neonics did not increase agricultural yields. Their use on crops can be likened to feeding healthy people antibiotics as a preventive measure. Not surprisingly, some pests are already starting to develop resistance. In the meantime, by harming pollinators like bees, and natural pest predators such as birds and beneficial insects, neonics are sabotaging the very organisms on which farmers depend. Blue Grosbeak

THOMAS BOSWELL | THE WASHINGTON POST

Any questions? Nats answer call with stellar start A week ago, the Nationals’ bullpen was a nightly fireworks display, and manager Dusty Baker was trying not to get his fingers scalded when he snatched the ball from his inflammatory relievers. But since Baker reached the end of his rope last Tuesday, switching closers from Blake Treinen to a tandem of vet Shawn Kelley and kid Koda Glover, the entire perspective on the Nats has flipped. Washington entered Monday’s game at Colorado on a seven-game winning streak. In those seven games, the only Nats fireworks were the explosive bats of Bryce Harper and rejuvenated Ryan Zimmerman.

Now, the central question about the Nats has changed. What, besides bullpen issues, do the they appear to lack? The answer is almost nothing. Just three weeks ago, the Nationals began the season with questions about at least 10 of their key players. Was Harper more the MVP of 2015 or the mystery mediocrity of 2016? Was Zimmerman, with three years left on a big contract, washed up? They entered Monday as the two leading hitters in baseball, with Harper at .400 and Zimmerman at .387. Was Stephen Strasburg, who ended last season on the disabled list because of a scary elbow, healthy once again? Had that broken bone in Max Scherzer’s hand healed? Strasburg has both added

velocity and improved the consistency of his mechanics while pitching with a simplified stretch delivery. Scherzer has looked like his two-time Cy Young Award-winning self. Was Adam Eaton worth the three pitchers he cost in trade? And where should he hit?

Nationals OF Bryce Harper wins NL player of the week for the fifth time in his career

Eaton’s on-base percentage as of Monday morning was .395. He scored 16 runs in his first 18 games and has been so impressive that Baker leans toward hitting him either No. 1 or No. 2 with Trea Turner. As for Turner, he has seemed comfortable defensively at shortstop — another question entering the season. Would Daniel Murphy’s and Tanner Roark’s time with the victorious U.S. team in the World Baseball Classic lead to injury or slow starts? Murphy was hitting .324 entering Monday’s game, and Roark, if anything, may have increased confidence after a crucial performance for the U.S. September fools you about rookies as they arrive, and April cons you that veterans are back to their best selves. Then, oops, you have to play six more months. But good news, especially across so many elements, is significant, even with a small sample size. The next question, because baseball never lets us rest, is: How long does it last?

3 San Francisco Giants 2017 tax forecast: $2.3M

Signing Mark Melancon (4 years, $62 million) put them over the tax threshold, but they’re expected to pay $1.1 million less than in 2016.

2 Los Angeles Dodgers 2017 tax forecast: $25.1M

That luxury tax payment would be a significant step down from the $43.6 million they paid in 2015 and the $31.8 million last year.

1 New York Yankees 2017 tax forecast: $9M

That number would be down from $27.4 million last year for a team that could target Bryce Harper and Manny Machado after 2018.

NHL PLAYOFFS | SECOND ROUND

Heart-stopping hockey

This year’s Stanley Cup playoffs have already been scintillating and sleep-depriving. Eighteen of the 42 first-round games went to overtime this year, which is a league record, and two of those 18 games required a second OT period to determine the winner. Two of the series were upsets by wild-card teams: the Predators swept the Blackhawks, and the Rangers dispatched the Canadiens in

six games. Now that the field is set, here’s a look at how the second round could play out. NEIL GREENBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Senators vs. Rangers

Game 1: 8 p.m. Wed., NBCSN

When the two best teams in the regular season meet in the second round, Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby will get the most attention. But the series will tilt on who gets the most out of peripheral players. When the Penguins beat the Caps in the second round last year, their third line of Carl Hagelin, Nick Bonino and Phil Kessel tallied 18 points. Hagelin is out this time with a lower-body injury, but Pittsburgh got contributions from Jake Guentzel (five goals, one assist) and Bryan Rust (four goals) in Round 1. Washington had one bottom-six forward, Tom Wilson, score more than one goal against Toronto. Projected winner: Capitals (56.8 percent win probability)

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist was underwhelming during the regular season with a career-low .910 save percentage. But he gave a vintage performance in the first round, stopping 195 of 206 shots (.947) from the Canadiens despite a higher rate of high-danger shots, including second-chance attempts off rebounds and rush shots following a giveaway or takeaway in the defensive zone. The Senators averaged just 2.4 expected goals per 60 minutes — which measure the quality of scoring chances — during the regular season, 10th fewest in the league. Montreal was fourth (2.8). Projected winner: Rangers (58.4 percent win probability)

The league’s leader in points, Edmonton’s Connor McDavid, will go up against one the league’s best two-way forwards, Ryan Kesler, in a matchup that will be the key to the series. McDavid (30 goals, 70 assists) was the NHL’s only 100point scorer in the regular season. In six playoff games, he’s scored two goals with two assists. During his two NHL seasons, McDavid’s line has scored almost as much against Kesler (3.1 even-strength goals per 60 minutes) as they have without Kesler on the ice (3.5). Kesler scores just 1.6 goals per 60 minutes against McDavid but 2.1 goals per 60 against others. Projected winner: Oilers (55 percent win probability)

The Blues’ power play was anemic in the first round against the Wild, converting just once in 15 chances. Recent history suggests it will struggle against Nashville, too: St. Louis was 1-for-14 with the man-advantage in five games against the Predators during the regular season. But in the regular season, Nashville goalie Pekka Rinne posted a save percentage of .859 on the penalty kill, the ninth lowest among 29 goaltenders with at least 200 penalty-kill minutes played. He also had the 11th lowest high-danger save percentage (.787), so Jaden Schwartz and St. Louis could be due to score. Projected winner: Blues (61.3 percent win probability)

REDSKINS Restricted free agent and inside linebacker Will Compton has signed his low-round tender and will return with the Redskins for the 2017 season. Compton will play his fifth NFL season with Washington after serving as a starter and defensive captain last year. He recorded a career-high 106 tackles and five passes defended in 15 games with one interception and a forced fumble. The move gives the Redskins another experienced piece at the position, which should have plenty of competition this offseason with eight inside linebackers currently on the 90-man roster. The Redskins signed Pro Bowl linebacker Zach Brown this month to go along with Mason Foster, who started with Compton last year, Martrell Spaight, Chris Carter, Steven Daniels, Khairi Fortt and Pete Robertson. Compton is slated to make $1.797 million in 2017 as a lowround tendered restricted free agent this offseason. On Friday, the Redskins re-signed running back Chris Thompson, another restricted free agent. Washington last month extended a one-year tender to Thompson worth $2.746 million. The Redskins are expected to focus on defense in the draft — which starts Thursday — but have explored the possibility of drafting a back in the first round. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Never too old to learn FITNESS As they launched their rowing shell onto Boston’s Charles River one sunny October morning, four Alexandria women prepared to live a rower’s dream: competing in the 3-mile Head of the Charles Regatta that is to rowers what the Boston Marathon is to runners. They’d trained together for months and even hired a coach to push them harder. Average age in the boat: 63. That was two years ago. Harriett Pallas, 67, Brenda Waltz, 67, Pamela Zitron, 69, and Eleanor Richards, 61, are still rowing and still competing, along with a growing contingent of older women who’ve discovered that rowing can be a good way to get and stay fit. Most aerobic sports bathe the brain with feel-good endorphins after a workout, and rowing is no exception. Women find strength and camaraderie in rowing as they age

Indoor rowing is a way to learn the basics of the sport on dry land.

Fritz Hagerman, who taught at Ohio University and died in 2013, found that the lungs of rowers who train seriously use oxygen far more efficiently than those of most other athletes. After all, rowing uses all the body’s oxygenhungry major muscle groups in the legs, torso and arms. Rowing has grown in popularity for every age group. USRowing, the sport’s governing body, says its membership of 23,000 grew by 22 percent between 2015 and 2016. About 14 percent of its members are 50 or older. Learning to row To learn the basics, newbies often try a “learn to row” event. USRowing sponsors a National Learn to Row Day, this year on June 3, when some rowing clubs in the D.C. area open their boat bays to the public for demonstrations of the stroke and short paddles in those sleek, narrow boats called shells. The Washington Rowing School in Bladensburg, Md., several local clubs and Thompson’s Boat Center, near the Kennedy Center, also offer learn-to-row courses. competitors were older than 50. USRowing doesn’t break down those figures by gender. But first, there’s the learning process. And the fact that the stroke must be learned is another of rowing’s advantages. “Running or walking, people can do that fine,” says Stella Volpe, 53, a sports physiologist and nutritionist who heads Drexel University’s nutrition department. With “something like rowing . . . there’s the mental effort in learning something new. You need to think a lot in the boat.” Rowing can also maintain bone density, says Volpe, a rower herself. When the rower pushes against the boat’s footplate as she pulls her oar through the water, she is “putting a lot of mechanical loading on the bones and the muscles,” she says “And that’s good for the bone.” Best of all, for women of a certain age, rowing can deliver a huge sense of accomplishment. Jayne Lytel, 61, a member of D.C.’s Potomac Boat Club, understands. “I start my day rowing three mornings a week, and I like the way it makes me feel,” she says. “I feel proud that I can do this!” ALICE REID (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Salt makes you hungry A study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation found that salt actually makes you hungrier, not thirstier. German researchers studied two groups of 10 men during a simulated mission to Mars — one group for 105 days and the other for 205, the New York Daily News reports. The environment allowed researchers to control everything the subjects consumed. The men had identical diets except for salt levels. The study found that men who ate more salt weren’t as thirsty and needed more energy. While salt is known to cause people to urinate more, the study found that salt triggered the kidneys to hold onto water and produce urea — excreted in urine — which used up energy and made the subjects hungrier. Commitment

That depends on what explanations she gives for falling back into her bad patterns. Many of us make the same goals month after month and year after year, and are often thwarted because the effort is too high, the payoff is too slim or the nachos are too tasty. In her case, the problem could be a compulsive spending disorder or, as you fear, an unwillingness to

keep with your spending goals. Figure this out by putting logistics on your side: automatic transfers into savings accounts, credit cards that are literally frozen in ice and cashonly weeks where you set a specific limit. You won’t know if she can truly make changes until you attempt to help her remove the barriers that she says are in her way.

What does this woman do, immediately figure out your girlfriend’s new phone number through telepathy? I’m guessing you haven’t created as high of a barrier as you think. She needs to be completely blocked on all social media. No unknown numbers should be answered without screening. Moreover, look into your local harassment statutes to find out possible legal options. Give one final warning: that if the harassment continues, you are going to alert the authorities. I also must ask — as much as it pains me — whether your girlfriend is a completely reliable reporter. Of course, she was the one wronged here, so I’m not blaming the victim, but perhaps she’s engaging even a little bit — which will keep it going longer. Sandberg is building a support system BOOKS Though perhaps best known as Facebook’s No. 2 executive, Sheryl Sandberg is also a mentor, a mother, a billionaire and an author. When her husband, Dave Goldberg, died suddenly in 2015 while they were vacationing in Mexico, she added “widow” to the list. “The grief felt like a void, like it was sucking me in and pushing on me, pulling me in and I couldn’t even see or breathe,” Sandberg says. “People who have been through things like this told me it gets better. And I really didn’t believe them … I want other people going through things to believe it does get better.”

Her new book, out now — “Option B: Facing Adversity, Building Resilience and Finding Joy,” written with psychologist Adam Grant — aims to reiterate that message. It chronicles the devastating loss, her grief and how she emerged from it with a new perspective on life. A humbled follow-up to her first book, 2013’s “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead,” it’s also a how-to, drawing from studies and the experiences of others to describe techniques for building strength and resilience and ways to support those going through hard times. One portion of the book details how, initially, Sandberg

struggled to communicate her feelings. At Facebook, Sandberg writes that she’s long been an advocate of “bringing your whole self to work,” meaning a willingness to share your personal

life with co-workers. But this can get tricky when it comes to facing trauma. Sandberg found it difficult, and even considered carrying around a stuffed pachyderm to encourage co-workers

and even friends to talk about the “elephant in the room.” Then one day, about a month after Goldberg died, she decided to post on Facebook about her grief, her gratitude toward her friends and her related tumultuous feelings — for instance, coming to believe she would never again feel real joy. The change was immediate. Friends, coworkers and strangers — many of whom had dealt with loss themselves — began reaching out. It helped, Sandberg writes in “Option B.” The post has been shared more than 400,000 times and has some 74,000 comments. It opened up a conversation. “I know it almost sounds silly because I certainly work at Facebook and I know what Facebook’s mission is,” she says. “But experiencing it for myself was a very ... deep experience.” BARBARA ORTUTAY (AP)

MEDIUM

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’re likely to devise a plan that will enable others to step up their game even as you do the same. Improvements emerge across the board. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may not be able to hear what someone is trying to tell you, no matter how closely you think you are listening. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You may be interrupted on several occasions, prompting you to consider a “no contact” rule when you are in the midst of important work. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Care for yourself, and you will be in better shape to care for others — today and every day. At the moment, however, it’s a central issue.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’re

not where you think you should be, but there is a chance that you can get there if you follow a certain path that is currently concealed.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may require camouflage of sorts in order to avoid putting yourself — and others — in danger. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Others may not be taking things as seriously as you, but experience tells you that your perspective is accurate.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

TODAY: As low pressure makes its closest approach, we should have steady rainfall continuing through the morning. Rain may decrease in the afternoon. It remains chilly, with highs of 55 to 60. Winds are light from the northeast around 10 mph. We maintain the chance of light rain and drizzle overnight, but amounts should be pretty light.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may discover that someone has recently been making decisions for you, effectively limiting your options. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) While waiting for a plan to ripen, you can use the time to wrap up some matters that have been awaiting your attention.

THINGS WE KNEW ALREADY

PLEBEIANS

Celebrity event could be plagued by common folk Pippa Middleton and James Matthews’ wedding, set for May 20, could be open to the public thanks to new guidance on “celebrity weddings” that the Church of England just published. The U.K.’s Telegraph reported that the guidance says “a marriage is a public ceremony which at the least all parishioners are entitled to attend.” (EXPRESS)

This non-mystery seems to be solved Actress Amber Heard and billionaire Elon Musk seem to have confirmed a longtime rumor that they are dating. Several tabloids, including People magazine, TMZ and the Daily Mail, first gathered recent photographic evidence that at showed the pair in Australia, holding hands in public and zip-lining together on Sunday. Later that day, both Heard and Musk posted similar photos of them at dinner in which a lipstick print is seen on Musk’s cheek. Heard’s father, David, d, also recently told Grazia magazine that the two “are both very serious about each other.” (EXPRESS)
