Someone’s strange feline fetish has cat owners on razor’s edge
Instead of using Twitter for insult, village employee goes old-school
If he wasn’t a fan of a good show, this might be an even worse idea
A feline mystery has the attention of police in Waynesboro, Va., where someone has been taking cats and precisely shaving their underbellies or legs. It’s happened to seven cats since December. The cats, all of whom have owners, were returned uninjured. Police Capt. Kelly Walker said Friday that police aren’t sure what crime has been committed, but that the owners “would just like it to stop.” (AP)
The Augusta, Mich., village clerk apologized after she sent a couple a water bill addressed to the woman “and the [expletive] who lives here too,” WXMI-TV reported last week. Julie Glenn was upset because the couple left her a note saying she is always out when they try to pay their bill in person. Kevin Barthel said Glenn’s unpaid two-week suspension isn’t enough. “I’m 99.9 percent sure I’m the [expletive] she’s referring to,” he said. (EXPRESS)
A loyal fan of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” is enjoying the internet fame he’s received because of his lower-back tattoo. Bernard Johnson, 29, of New Orleans was inspired by the iconic first card of the show’s end credits, UPI reported last week. So the tattoo, in the middle of Johnson’s lower back, says in two lines: “Executive Producer/Dick Wolf.” “I wasn’t drunk, either,” Johnson said. Next up is a tattoo of “SVU” star Mariska Hargitay. Metro trains become art TRANSPORTATION There are probably a lot of Metro lovers who would happily pay admission to watch a sculptor chop up a subway car. Metro haters would probably pay even more. The work is violent, noisy, smelly and at times even beautiful — as when Robert “Mojo” Mojeski climbs onto the rail car with a welding device and zaps the steel carcass in a blue-andwhite shower of sparks. The work goes fast, too. Mojo, as he prefers to be called, needs to transform a 40-ton rail car into retail kiosks that will be installed at Grosvenor-Strathmore Metro station this month. He has until the grand opening May 17 to finish the job he started in mid-April at a warehouse in Brookeville, Md. In that time, the Metro car’s distinctive, push me-pull you seats and their 1970s orange upholstery will go, to be cut free and transformed into park benches. Metro’s system map, with its classic graphic design of multicolored spaghetti, will stay

to brighten the kiosk’s interior. When Mojo and his team are finished, the kiosks will be placed on the pedestrian plaza that is now mostly a concrete wasteland populated by newspaper boxes. “It’s about, ‘How do you enliven this dead space?’ ” said Ron Kaplan, a co-founder of the real estate firm behind the project. The kiosks are part of a broader experiment by Metro to allow pop-up retail stands that could bring in money without, the agency hopes, littering its trains
“We are trying to be a very green development. What would be better than trying to repurpose one of the Metro cars?” RON KAPLAN, a co-founder of the real estate firm behind the art project, speaking to WTOP about using Metro’s old 4000-series cars
with food. The kiosks at Grosvenor, for example, will sell prepared food but only on a few days of the week and only during the afternoon and evening rush hour. Kaplan said the idea is that people will be able to pick up a loaf of bread or other small items on the way home. Mojo said he was surprised at how much of the rail car’s workings were jammed into its undercarriage. Electronic circuitry. Cables. Metal couplings. “All this stuff was super-tightly packed under there,” Mojo said. “You had very minimum room. So you had to kind of work your way into the next piece to the next piece to the next piece.” It took two days to hack away all the unneeded pieces in the undercarriage. Other surprises were not as fun, Mojo said. He was removing a metal footstep that looked a lot lighter than it was when the thing landed on his hand. “You remember the little one single [expletive] footstep?” Mojo asks. “I cut the [expletive] thing off and it was made of steel, not aluminum, so it was heavy. It hit the ground and just nailed me,” Mojo said. “Of all the things.” It broke his finger. FREDRICK

District battles against stinky ginkgo trees D.C. transportation crews are set to begin the annual spraying of the city’s female ginkgo trees. The spraying is scheduled to begin today, and will take place over several nights from 9 p.m. through 6 a.m., weather permitting. Officials say the annual spraying eliminates the formation of ginkgo fruit, which emits an offensive smell and falls on sidewalks and roadways. Residents are advised that spraying will begin in Ward 5 and proceed to Wards 4, 3, 2, 1 and 6. There are no female ginkgo trees in Wards 7 and 8. (AP)

Police seek escaped inmate Prisoner fled while en route to Maryland psychiatric hospital HOWARD COUNTY, MD. Howard County authorities on Saturday called off the ground search for a prisoner who escaped Friday outside Maryland’s maximum-security psychiatric hospital in Jessup after saying they had found nothing to indicate he was still in the area. Police said the investigation into the whereabouts of David M. Watson, 28, remains “active” as

authorities follow up leads, including in Wicomico County and Delaware, where Watson has ties. Watson Watson was being unloaded from a van at the hospital Friday when he pushed a guard to the ground and ran into woods near Dorsey Run Road. Police said he had somehow gotten out of handcuffs and a waist chain, which were found nearby. Officers searched the area around the hospital through Friday night and into Saturday
morning, but no sightings had been reported as of late Saturday afternoon, police said. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered in his capture. Watson was serving a prison sentence of more than 100 years in Delaware for attempted murder, police said. He also has been charged with attempted murder of police officers in Wicomico County and was on his way to Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center for an evaluation in that case, said a Howard County police spokeswoman. LYNH BUI AND KATHERINE SHAVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Organizers say about 200,000 people attended the Peoples Climate March on Saturday in Washington.
Thousands brave heat to protest climate policy Soaring temperatures a striking symbol for latest demonstration THE DISTRICT On a sweltering April day, tens of thousands of demonstrators assembled in D.C. on Saturday for the latest installment of the regular protests that punctuate the Trump era. This large-scale climate march marked President Trump’s first 100 days in office, which have already seen rollbacks of environmental protections and Obama climate policies. Demonstrators started near the Capitol and slowly made their way to the White House. The Peoples Climate March, which originated with a massive
demonstration in New York in September 2014, picked a symbolically striking day for its 2017 event. The temperature reached 91 degrees at National Airport at 2:59 p.m., tying a heat record for April 29 in the District set in 1974 — which only amplified the movement’s message. The focus on Trump was not necessarily intentional: In a press statement, Paul Getsos, national coordinator of the Peoples Climate Movement, said the event was planned “before the election.” For Ethan Fekete, Saturday’s climate march was the first protest he has taken part in. “Ironically, we march to get rid of our carbon footprint,” said the 13-year-old Virginia Beach
resident, who attended the march with his dad and a friend. “It’s so much more than just a bunch of people walking around,” Ethan said. “The signs are so creative and everyone is here for a good cause.” Organizers told the National Park Service that they expected 50,000 to 100,000 attendees. By late afternoon, they were claiming to have greatly exceeded that and reached 200,000. More than 375 satellite marches were held in the United States and even more around the world, from Manila, the Philippines, to Amsterdam. In addition to tying an alltime heat record for April 29, the month also was the warmest April on record for the District. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

New stamp to eclipse all other stamps
Scenes from social media of the Fyre Festival, which had promised guests a “transformative” luxury experience.
Disorganization dooms hyped festival to disaster Fyre organizer promises full refunds after event on ‘private’ island flops EXUMA, BAHAMAS The organizers of the Fyre Festival promised “two transformative weekends” on a “remote and private” island in the Bahamas that was “once owned by Pablo Escobar.” Kendall Jenner promoted it on Instagram. Rapper Ja Rule was one of the organizers. Festival-goers paid thousands of dollars for what they believed was going to be a luxury experience. It wasn’t. The first wave of paying guests arrived Thursday, to
find a chaotic festival site that appeared to be weeks away from being able to host anyone. Blink-182, one of the bands headlining the festival, canceled at the last minute. The tents that were set up for guests to sleep in looked like “FEMA tents,” one person said. There were barely any festival staffers around, and the promised gourmet food was just cheese sandwiches. Festival-goers paid anywhere from $450 for a no-frills day pass to up to $250,000 for the full VIP experience. One widely advertised package cost $12,000. By Friday morning, the festival had been “postponed.” And on Friday afternoon, Ja Rule
tweeted out a statement saying he was “heartbroken” about the whole thing. He apologized, but said that the disaster was “NOT MY FAULT.” The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism said it is deeply disappointed. The ministry even had to step in to help ensure all the attendees were safely returned. “Hundreds of visitors to Exuma were met with total disorganization and chaos,” the tourism office wrote in a statement. Fyre Festival co-organizer Billy McFarland promised full refunds on the festival’s website Saturday, along with free VIP passes to next year’s festival.
The U.S. Postal Service is going all out for this summer’s total solar eclipse, with a new stamp. Touch the stamp with your finger, and the heat transforms the image of the blacked-out sun into the moon. Remove your finger, and the eclipse reappears. The trick is using temperaturesensitive ink. There’s a map on the back of the stamp sheet showing the eclipse’s diagonal path across the U.S. on Aug. 21. It will be the first total solar eclipse visible in the U.S. since 1979 and the first one coast to coast since 1918. The stamp comes out on June’s summer solstice. (AP)

With complex challenges ahead, Trump hopes for a big legislative victory on taxes
Press freedom hailed at dinner without Trump
have few opportunities to pass partisan priorities before turning to several complicated subjects that require bipartisan action. The White House abruptly abandoned a push for borderwall funding last week, allowing lawmakers to strike a deal to temporarily keep the government open another week. Congressional leaders believe that funds specifically for the border wall will not be part of a longer-term spending deal that lawmakers in both parties must pass by Friday to keep the lights on through the end of the fiscal year in September. Then, both parties can shift back to Trump’s top priorities — revamping the health care and tax systems, and confirming nominees to fill out his administration. The White House also hopes to pass an infrastructure bill this year but acknowledged that it likely would have to wait until after tax reform. ABBY PHILLIP
MEDIA The White House Correspondents’ Association punched back Saturday against an administration that snubbed it by becoming the first in decades to skip out on the annual breadbreaking between the White House and the reporters who cover the presidency. “We cannot ignore the rhetoric that has been employed by the president about who we are and what we do,” WHCA president Jeff Mason told a ballroom of journalists attending the soldout dinner. “We are not fake news. We are not failing news organizations. And we are not the enemy of the American people.” Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, above, who broke the Watergate scandal for The Washington Post, acted as elder statesmen. Journalism should be “the best obtainable version of the truth,” Bernstein said, sharing his strategy for covering politicians: “When lying is combined with secrecy, there is a pretty good road map in front of you. . . . Yes, follow the money, but also follow the lies.” Hasan Minhaj, the “Daily Show” correspondent tapped as the comedic entertainment, skewered the absent president, then turned serious, saying he was rooting for those who cover the White House: “You guys are running the marathon, and I’m at the half-mile mark, giving you tape for your nipples.”

POLITICS After 100 days full of fits and starts, President Trump is barreling into the second phase of his presidency focused on attempting to secure big victories that have eluded him on the economic pillars of his agenda. With an eye toward keeping his core promise of creating jobs and accelerating economic growth, Trump has fixated on tax reform as the next undertaking of his administration — an opportunity for him to land a first major legislative victory after repeated failures to pass a health care package. Sweeping tax reform has been a front-of-mind issue for Trump, who marked his first 100 days as president with a rally Saturday in Harrisburg, Pa. Aides are being pressured to front-load the effort with the goal — already delayed — of having a bill approved before the end of this year. The prospect that he could do something not accomplished since President Ronald Reagan passed a comprehensive tax reform package in 1986 is especially appealing to Trump. The effort took Reagan about 500 days at one of the high points of his power — the beginning of his second term. Trump, White House aides and outside advisers said, is buoyed by the prospect of accomplishing it in the first year of his first term. Humbled by their failure on health care, White House aides say they have taken a lesson from the experience and plan to take the lead on the tax-reform effort. The bill will be guided by the principles laid out last week in a single-page document that outlined the president’s plan to slash rates and consolidate tax brackets for most taxpayers, aides said. “There’s a coming together and a real growth going on inside

with the senior staff,” said Larry Kudlow, a former Trump economic adviser who met with administration officials last week. “They’re getting their sea legs.” Trump administration officials are expected to spend the next six weeks soliciting feedback on the tax proposal and fine-tuning their approach. The aim now is to spend most of the summer refining the text of a bill, which could be voted on by the fall. “I think Trump clearly needs to have a couple of legislative victories,” said Stephen Moore, a former Trump campaign economic adviser. “Trump is going to be judged on three things: Did he keep his promises to voters; did he revive this economy; and did he get out of this low-growth rut?” A number of Capitol Hill Republicans say Trump’s administration is improving and beginning to grasp the complexities of running the federal government. “I think part of it is there is a
Sluggish growth report The U.S. economy expanded at its slowest pace in three years in the first quarter of this year, according to government data issued Friday. America’s gross domestic product, a broad measure of economic growth, grew at an annualized rate of just 0.7 percent in the first three months of 2017, a significant slowdown from the previous quarter. Although economists say it wasn’t a reflection of President Trump’s performance, the report still highlights the challenge this administration will face trying to meet its target rate of 3 percent economic growth. nation+world Invitation to Philippines’ notorious leader linked to fears over N. Korea POLITICS Signaling what is perhaps a warming relationship between their countries, President Trump has invited the controversial leader of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, to the White House. They had “a very friendly conversation” in which they talked about the North Korea threat, according to the White House’s readout of the Saturday call. The two leaders, who have drawn comparisons for their tough rhetoric, also discussed the Philippine government’s fight against drugs. What remained unmentioned,
however, were the government’s extrajudicial killings of suspected drug dealers and users. Thousands have been killed by police and vigilantes since Duterte took office and vowed to eradicate his country’s massive drug problem. The rising death toll has drawn criticisms from international human rights groups, at least one of which, Human Rights Watch, has made the case for a criminal investigation of the Duterte administration. Trump’s chief of staff, Reince Priebus, said the friendlier ties are needed even with concerns about Duterte’s human rights record. Priebus cited the military threat of North Korea. “The purpose of this call is all

about North Korea,” Priebus told ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. “It doesn’t mean that human rights don’t matter.”
The relationship between the United States and the Philippines soured under President Obama, who criticized Duterte’s bloody war on drugs. But Trump said Saturday he is looking forward to visiting the Philippines in November during the U.S.-Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit and East Asia Summit. During an ASEAN summit in the Philippines, Duterte on Saturday said the U.S. should be restrained in dealing with North Korea. “I’m sure President Trump by now is cautioning his military to just maybe hang on there and not to start something which they cannot control,” Duterte said in a statement. “Everybody’s worried.” (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

CANTON, TEXAS | A storm spotter inspects the damage to a Dodge dealership in Canton on Saturday night after a series of tornadoes left a trail of overturned vehicles, mangled trees and damaged homes in Texas. At least nine people have died in severe storms that rolled across the U.S. this weekend, bringing heavy rains and flooding to the Midwest and South. Deaths were reported in Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and Mississippi.

IMMIGRATION About half of the 675 immigrants picked up in roundups across the U.S. in the days after President Trump took office had no criminal convictions or had committed traffic offenses — mostly drunken driving — as their most serious crimes, according to government data. Two people had been convicted of homicide, 80 had been convicted of assault and 57 had convictions for “dangerous drugs.” The largest single group was 163 convicted of traffic offenses, mostly drunken driving. Of those taken into custody in the raids, 177 had no criminal convictions at all, although 66 had charges pending, largely immigration or traffic offenses. The raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were part of a nationwide roundup dubbed Operation Cross Check, which accounts for a small portion of the 21,362 immigrants the Trump administration took into custody for deportation proceedings from January through mid-March. The two-month total represents a 32 percent increase in deportation arrests over the same period last year. Most are criminals, administration officials have said. But 5,441 were not criminals, according to records. In the latter part of the last administration, new ICE rules prioritized the arrest of criminals. MARIA SACCHETTI AND ED O’KEEFE

Investigations conducted during March reveal that U.S.-led coalition airstrikes targeting the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria killed 45 civilians from November 2016 through March 2017, mostly in and around the Iraqi city of Mosul, according to a Pentagon statement released Sunday. The report did not include findings from an ongoing probe into a March 17 strike targeting ISIS fighters in Mosul. That strike resulted in more than 100 civilian deaths, according to reports from residents. The Pentagon acknowledged at least 352 civilians have been killed by coalition strikes in Iraq and Syria since 2014. (AP)
A Swiss climber acclaimed for his rapid ascents — including scaling dozens of peaks in the Alps in a little more than two months — was killed Sunday in a mountaineering accident near Mount Everest in Nepal, expedition organizers said. Ueli Steck was killed at Camp 1 of Mount Nuptse. His family said the exact circumstances of his death were still unclear. Steck was planning to climb the 29,035-foot Mount Everest and nearby Mount Lhotse this month. Steck, 40, was one of the most renowned climbers of his generation, and was most recognized for his speed-climbing.
The Iranian founder of a Farsilanguage satellite television network was shot dead in Istanbul, Turkish media reported Sunday, just months after reportedly being convicted of spreading “propaganda” against the Islamic Republic. Gunmen opened fire on Saeed Karimian of GEM TV late Saturday night. Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency described GEM as an opposition network and said that Karimian had been given a prison sentence for “propaganda.” (AP)

Wizards forward Markieff Morris collapses to the court in the second quarter Sunday.

SUNDAY STARS
CELTICS 123, WIZARDS 111 | BOSTON LEADS SERIES 1-0
Painful power outage Wizards waste a hot start and stumble in the second half after Morris gets hurt NBA PLAYOFFS Markieff Morris tried to show icy resolve and silent strength. On Sunday afternoon, pain was shooting from his left ankle, but the Wizards’ forward deliberately walked to the sideline without wincing as he left Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals in Boston. But by the time his steps had finally removed him from the spotlight of the court, Morris began to limp. Soon, the Wizards would also pull up lame, finishing an uneven performance with a 123-111 loss. “Don’t know nothing as of yet,” coach Scott Brooks said about the extent of Morris’ injury. “I watched the video. It didn’t look good.”
When asked whether he would play Game 2 on Tuesday, Morris told reporters: “For sure. Hell, yeah.” That contradicted the visible evidence: Morris’ foot was so swollen that he was unable to put on his left shoe. The Wizards only can hope Morris’ declaration proves to be more than just machismo. On Sunday, Washington’s backcourt shined — Bradley Beal led the team with 27 points and John Wall scored 20 with 16 assists — but once the starting unit lost Morris, the team buckled. The Wizards looked unstoppable early, jumping to 16-0 and 22-5 leads. In the first quarter, Washington shot 61.5 percent,
drained four 3-pointers and dominated the glass for a 14-5 advantage, silencing the usually rowdy TD Garden. Then, at the 7:18 mark of the second quarter, the game — and possibly, the series — shifted. Just after the Celtics tied the score at 42, wiping out the 17-point lead, a routine play cost the Wizards their starting power forward. Morris had the left side of the court cleared out for a one-onone against Boston’s Al Horford. Morris stepped back for a 16-foot jumper, and Horford contested too closely, forcing Morris to land on Horford’s left foot and causing his left ankle to bend unnaturally toward the court. He got up to shoot his free throw, because if the Wizards had to replace him, then by rule, he could not return to the game.
Morris’ make put the Wizards ahead 45-42 before they committed a foul to get him off the floor. By the time he reached the hallway, his laborious gait had turned into an uncomfortable hop. “I honestly thought it was broke,” Morris said. Before the injury, the Celtics grabbed only two offensive rebounds. After he left, Boston pulled down 10 more. Boston outscored Washington 36-16 in the third quarter. The Celtics hit 19 shots from 3-point range, the most Washington has allowed in a game all season. Morris never returned to the game. He did not even take his seat on the bench following halftime. He played just 11 minutes and scored five points. Now, the fate of the Wizards’ success may rest on his ankle. CANDACE BUCKNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CAPITALS AT PENGUINS | GAME 3 TONIGHT AT 7:30, NBCSN
‘We’re not giving up hope’ NHL PLAYOFFS The doors to the home locker room stayed shut for more than 10 minutes after the Capitals filtered off the ice Saturday in Washington. Following a 6-2 loss to the Penguins that put them down 0-2 in the Eastern Conference semifinals, several players approached coach Barry Trotz to ask if they could deliver the postgame message. Nicklas Backstrom ultimately gave the talk. “Sometimes you need to hear from your teammates more than you need to hear from your coach,” forward T.J. Oshie said. Starting tonight in Pittsburgh, the Capitals will have to win at least one of the next two to force a Game 5 back at Verizon Center. That dire situation prompted a players-only meeting after the

game Saturday. Players declined to divulge what the message was exactly, but Oshie said it was what the team needed to hear from its leaders. When the Capitals hit rough patches during the season, they held similar private meetings, and Washington often won the games immediately following those discussions.
“We know we’re better in this locker room,” said goaltender Braden Holtby, who was pulled from the game Saturday after allowing three goals on 14 shots through two periods. “We know we’re not giving up hope or getting frustrated.” Trotz said Holtby will start Game 3. Philipp Grubauer came in cold Saturday and allowed two
goals on nine shots. The Capitals played one of their best first periods to start the game, outshooting Pittsburgh 16-5. But when Washington went to the first intermission with the game tied at 0-0, frustration led to their unraveling. In the series, Washington has 71 shots on goal to Pittsburgh’s 45. “You’ve just got to be patient,”

If Sunday’s game was any indication, the club might not need to.
Anthony Rendon went 6-for-6, hit three home runs and finished with 10 RBIs as the Nationals set all sorts of records in their 23-5 drubbing of the Mets. The Nationals started their historic fireworks display with five first-inning runs off Noah Syndergaard, the Mets’ ace nicknamed Thor. When Syndergaard left the game in the second inning, Washington didn’t stop. According to the Mets, Syndergaard has a “possible lat strain” and was sent to New York for an MRI. After he left, the Nationals set

defenseman Brooks Orpik said. “That was the message. We’re down 0-2, but I think guys are still pretty confident here.” Something mentioned in these team gatherings is how this is a last chance for this group of players to win together. At the end of the season, six will be unrestricted free agents and five will be restricted free agents. Because of salary-cap constraints, the Capitals won’t be able to re-sign everyone, and the most talented team to surround Backstrom and star forward Alex Ovechkin will inevitably be broken apart. As that team left the ice as the loser for a second straight game, it searched for a way to prolong this journey. “They just said, ‘Hey, let us have it today,’ ” Trotz said. “I think that’s great. B+ talent influx: Redskins’ picks show good sense With 10 picks in the 2017 NFL draft, the Redskins got a little bit of everything: At least two impact players to help rebuild the defense, a few prospects who could fill significant gaps, and projects who could develop over time. I’m giving Washington a B+ draft grade largely because of its good fortune in landing Alabama defensive end Jonathan Allen, a projected top-five pick who fell to them at No. 17 after they benefited from an unexpected run of offense — the first dozen picks included three quarterbacks, three wide receivers and two running backs. It’s better to be lucky than good, but the Redskins were a little of both. Former general manager Scot McCloughan,
who was fired in March, laid the groundwork for the draft board, but his successors made sensible decisions. Allen, who was the 2012 Washington Post All-Met Defensive Player of the Year at Stone Bridge High in Ashburn, Va., could end up as the star of the draft class. After playing high school ball just down the road from Redskins Park, he should generate plenty of jersey sales. Allen might have dropped in the draft because he had surgeries to repair labral tears in both shoulders during college. Although he played without symptoms, he already has mild arthritis that could cause problems later in his career. If Washington becomes a true Super Bowl contender in the near future, it will be because Allen (6 feet 3, 286 pounds) set the foundation for

a rebuilt front seven. “You talk about upgrading your defense,” coach Jay Gruden said. “Well, you have to pick a guy high. … He’s the best defensive lineman, we thought, in the draft.” Crimson Tide pass rusher Ryan Anderson, who was scooped up by the Redskins in the second round, was another value pick who was slightly overlooked on a talented team in Tuscaloosa. Anderson’s selfanalysis says so much. When asked what he brings to the table, the outside linebacker said he’s about “striking the man in front of you” and getting to the ball. “I’m not a combine warrior, not a workout warrior,” he said. “I’m a football player.”

Amen, brother. Anderson (6 foot 2, 253 pounds) has oldschool toughness. In the best case, he could be like Redskins Hall of Famer Chris Hanburger, but 35 pounds heavier. This guy is a baller. Third-rounder Fabian Moreau might have gone in Round 1 if he hadn’t torn a pectoral muscle doing the bench press at UCLA’s pro day. The cornerback is likely to be limited in training camp, which would diminish his rookie potential, but he could still be a solid long-term pick. Fourth-round running back Samaje Perine will get a chance to earn a role. At 5 feet 11 and 233 pounds, he could at least be a bowling ball at the goal line and might even challenge Robert Kelley for the starting job. As for the remaining draftees, fans can hope and dream that someone productive will emerge from Saturday’s selections. But at a minimum, Washington landed a pair of playmakers who should be significant components of a revitalized defense. Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. Bills owner Terry Pegula finished an offseason front-office purge by firing general manager Doug Whaley and the entire scouting staff Sunday, a day after completing the NFL draft. The shake-up further solidifies coach Sean McDermott’s authority and influence, which has grown since he was hired to replace Rex Ryan in January. Pegula said Sunday the decision was made after a lengthy review for reasons that “remain private to us.” Buffalo will immediately begin the search for its seventh GM during what’s been a 17-year playoff drought. What a pretty puzzle
‘American Gods’ takes its style — but not its story — very seriously
TELEVISION “American Gods” is a painstakingly rendered and visually captivating adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s best-selling 2001 novel about the animosity between old mythological gods of yore and the new gods of media, technology and the like. At least, that’s the short explanation. Long on concept and short on momentum, each episode of “American Gods” (there are eight, the first of which premiered Sunday night on Starz) feels like the pilot for still another show and then another. The story takes viewers on a journey of detours, all in the aim of getting
started. At least 17 characters are introduced in the first three or four hours (with such surprising cameos as Cloris Leachman) — with many still to come, including a Westernized version of Jesus himself (Jeremy Davies). Ricky Whittle stars as Shadow Moon, a handsome prisoner nearing the end of his sentence for an attempted heist; the warden frees him a few days early because his wife, Laura (Emily Browning), has been killed in a car crash. Making his way home, Shadow meets Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane), a beaten-down but still powerful human representation of Odin, who offers him a job as his right-hand man. After bizarre encounters with a belligerent (and quite tall) leprechaun named Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber) and the newfangled gods
The peak TV guys
“American Gods” was developed for TV by Bryan Fuller and Michael Green, both television veterans. Green had a hand in writing for “Sex and the City,” “Smallville” and other mid-2000s shows. Fuller is best known as the creator of NBC’s “Hannibal” — a show that used blood in the same stylish way “American Gods” does. H.S./EXPRESS
of technology (Bruce Langley) and media (Gillian Anderson), Shadow learns that Mr. Wednesday is rallying the old gods to battle the new gods. “American Gods” doesn’t offer any promise that its ultimate showdown will soon come to pass. The excessive buildup, however, offers certain memorable scenes
of these deities at play in the past and present, including the bizarre sight of Bilquis (Yetide Badaki), the goddess of love, seducing both men and women via an online dating app and then devouring them whole — and not with her mouth. In another scene, the trickster god Anansi, aka Mr. Nancy (Orlando Jones), visits African prisoners trapped in a 17th-century slave ship and incites a fiery revolt by revealing to them the future of the black race in America. Enjoyment will vary from viewer to viewer, and it probably wouldn’t hurt to already be a fan of the source material. Unless it’s intended solely for a niche audience, “American Gods” could stand to work harder on its accessibility issues. HANK STUEVER

A hacker who goes by the name The Dark Overlord claimed Saturday to have released episodes of the forthcoming season of “Orange Is the New Black” on an illegal file-sharing service. “Grand Designs” has something no other home makeover show has: host Kevin McCloud’s strong, dark eyebrows. The British designer frequently raises them to the sky as he ponders seemingly foolhardy schemes. The series, which launched in Britain in 1999 and focuses on one extraordinary building
project in each episode, began streaming two seasons on Netflix in April. So U.S. fans can see the brows — and the buildings — for themselves. In one show, Colin, who teaches flying, and his wife, Marta, a trapeze artist, decide to build a home on their airfield. They want it to mimic an aircraft hangar with materials like steel and — as the British pronounce it — “a-loo-min-eeum.” Colin lays the foundation,

guided by an online course. “He has no real idea what he’s doing,” McCloud says. Up go the brows. In the end, their hangar home comes to life. A poetic
McCloud describes it as “an airship straight out of the pages of some graphic novel.” Then there’s the family who buys a run-down movie parlor. They aim to tear it down and
build a new home — but it turns out they must preserve the historic Edwardian brick facade. Curiously, they decide the new construction behind it will be made of concrete. McCloud’s brows appear skeptical. But somehow it works: The home blends brutalist concrete with rustic timber and “architectural echoes” from the cinema. No HGTV show can compare with the bold visions on “Grand Designs.” The only downside is that my 1920s colonial now seems rather boring. Maybe cloaking it with a-loo-min-eeum would be just the thing!
