New York bakery lets you make internet meanies eat their words
It’s a golden opportunity for wealthy “Star Wars” fans. A Tokyo jewelry store is offering life-size Darth Vader masks made of 24-karat gold for a mere 154 million yen — nearly $1.4 million — to mark the 40th anniversary of the first “Star Wars” movie, which was released May 25, 1977. The Ginza Tanaka store said the masks are not designed to be worn — at 33 pounds, they would be too heavy, and they have no opening for a head. (AP)
The Detroit Zoo had to close temporarily because, of all things, there was a wild animal on the grounds. The zoo in Royal Oak, Mich., closed its gates Monday morning, just before school field trips were about to begin, after workers discovered a coyote wandering around. But the zoo reopened a short time later after officials determined that the visitor posed no risk to the public — although some zoo animals were sheltered for their protection. (AP)
A New York bakery is providing a sweet way to shame people who try to demean you on the internet. For $35, Troll Cakes Bakery and Detective Agency will send a cake topped with the troll’s own words to their door, UPI reported Monday. For $60, the business says it will find the address of an anonymous troll in addition to delivering a cake. The bakery says examples of insults on cakes include “you donkey witch” and “ur mom is obese.” (EXPRESS)

page three From No. 1 Werth fan to a No. 1 fundraiser NATIONALS When 8-year-old Jude Ozaluk signed up six months ago for the “Shave the Mayor” event in her hometown of Parker, Colo., to raise money for childhood cancer research, she set a fundraising goal of $750. Ozaluk met that mark thanks to generous donations from family members and friends. She exceeded it — by more than $10,000 — thanks to the power of social media and an outpouring of support from Nationals fans who were taken by the story of how she befriended Jayson Werth last season and rekindled the friendship last week in Colorado. At the top of Ozaluk’s donor list, which is filled with more than 100 people who identify themselves as Nats fans, is a familiar name: “Jayson Werth and family supporting Jude.” Jude said that Werth told her he learned of her pledge — to shave her head to help cancer

patients — during Washington’s four-game series at Coors Field last week, when she presented her favorite player with a signed photo of herself and the two chatted before and after every game. Jude received more than $8,000 in donations between Thursday and Saturday’s event, when she and about 100 other volunteers, including Parker Mayor Mike Waid, shaved their
heads to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. The hair collected will be used to make wigs for children with cancer. “I was nervous, but I think it was cool to shave my head for cancer research and raise over $11,000, plus my hair,” said Jude, who raised the most money in the five-year history of the event and was this year’s top fundraiser. “I feel really lucky that I could use this to help kids with cancer.” “I just can’t believe the fans,” said Jude’s mom, Danielle. “We have received so many messages. We went to a baseball game hoping that Jayson Werth would remember her from last season, and then this all just blossomed from there. To not even be in D.C. and then see these fans show her so much love is really just amazing.” The Nationals won’t visit Denver again until next season, but Danielle said Jude is already dropping not-so-subtle hints about wanting to travel to Washington for a game this summer. A lot of people, including Werth, would be excited to see her. SCOTT ALLEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Vietnam War helicopter crews to get monument
SMITHSONIAN
D.C.’s newest museum still drawing lines The National Museum of African American History and Culture is still D.C.’s hottest attraction, where thousands of tickets are snapped up each month within minutes of being released. When 105,000 tickets were released April 3 for visits in July, they were claimed in just over two hours. Attendance from the museum’s Sept. 24 opening through April was expected to exceed 1.5 million once all data is compiled. The next reserve-ahead tickets will be released at 9 a.m. Wednesday, and similar demand is expected. (AP)
A new monument at Arlington National Cemetery will honor American helicopter crews who flew during the Vietnam War. The Military Times reports that Congress has approved the monument, which will be near the Tomb of the Unknowns. Spearheading the memorial campaign is retired Air Force Lt. Col. Bob Hesselbein, who flew AH-1 Cobra gunships in Vietnam. Hesselbein says Arlington has the greatest concentration of helicopter-crew casualties from the war. (AP) THE DISTRICT
Names of 3 area officers to be added to memorial The names of three D.C.-area police officers who died in the line of duty are being added to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial. Prince George’s County Police Officer Jacai Colson was killed last year by friendly fire. Prince William County Police Officer Ashley Guindon was killed hours into her first shift as an officer last year. And the name of Cpl. Harvey Snook of the Arlington County Police Department is being added after he died from cancer related to his work at the Pentagon following the Sept. 11 attacks. (AP)

Five-year-old boy dies from gunshot in Henrico
Reward doubled to $10K for escaped Del. prisoner
A shooting in Virginia has left one child dead. A 5-year-old boy was shot and killed Sunday afternoon in Henrico County. Henrico police say the boy was found after the shooting was reported around 1 p.m. Police say the investigation is ongoing but they are not actively searching for suspects. No arrests had been made and the victim’s name was not given. (AP)
A reward for a man who escaped from the grounds of a Howard County, Md., psychiatric hospital has been doubled to $10,000. The U.S. Marshals Service, Howard County Police and Maryland State Police have been looking for David M. Watson II, 28, since Friday. He was serving a sentence in Delaware for attempted murder for shooting at an officer’s home. (AP)
Funding bill maintains $150 million for Metro Federal budget plan also sets aside $125M for Md.’s Purple Line TRANSPORTATION A congressional spending bill set to be voted on this week maintains full federal funding for Metro, a positive sign for the struggling transit agency as it seeks continued support from a Republican-controlled Congress, officials said Monday. The move would authorize $150 million in grant funding through the end of September, but it’s unclear whether Congress will approve funding for the remainder of the 10-year, $1.5 billion federal program — or renew it when it expires in two
years. Congressional Republicans have indicated they want to see significant reforms from Metro, including labor concessions, before renewing it. “The federal government will again fulfill its statutory obligation to Metro by meeting its $150 million obligation to provide a dollar-for-dollar match in combination with Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia for Metro’s capital budget,” Rep. Barbara Comstock, R-Va., said Monday. Much “of these resources are used for safety improvements and replacing old rail cars and other equipment,” she added. Comstock is in the process of drafting a Metro reform bill that would overhaul the agency’s governance and labor practices, and
is the more likely of two Metro overhaul proposals to pass a GOPcontrolled Congress. The other, by Rep. John Delaney, D-Md., would give Metro an extra $750 million in federal funding over 10 years in exchange for changes in its governance structure and some labor concessions. The funding bill also includes $125 million in funding for Maryland’s light-rail Purple Line, which would connect riders to Metro, but is overseen by the Maryland Transit Administration. Purple Line funding was in jeopardy under President Trump’s proposed budget, which limited transit construction aid to projects that already have full funding grant agreements. local D.C. Council member failed to document $100K in contributions THE DISTRICT An audit that showed widespread problems with the campaign of a D.C. Council member — but that was withheld from public view until after he won re-election — has galvanized support among lawmakers for election reform. A majority of D.C. Council members say the city must prevent a repeat of the way Council member Brandon Todd,
D-Ward 4, was able to successfully run for re-election last year, while city auditors had privately concluded he could not document more than $100,000 in contributions from his previous race. Campaign reports from Todd’s subsequent, 2016 win were also riddled with omissions, according to an analysis by the Washington Post, making it hard to track many contributions to their source. Problems with Todd’s back-toback campaigns have focused attention on the District’s Office of Campaign Finance and whether the long-troubled agency

is helping or hindering the District government’s quest to shed its reputation for corrupt politics. Many council members say that in Todd’s case, the office went too far, letting the candidate delay responses to important questions for almost a year. “The underpinning of financial disclosure is that the public knows what’s going on,” said D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson. “There is a disservice if the Office of Campaign Finance has identified missing documents and the public doesn’t know for a year.” AARON C. Authorities say a man about to enter a hospital Sunday in Maryland changed his mind, got into a car and drove over a police officer’s foot. Takoma Park police spokeswoman Cathy Plevy said the man — already in a hospital gown — locked himself in a relative’s car. Relatives called police and when the man took off, he drove over an officer’s foot. Plevy said the man went to his home in D.C. and climbed up to the attic. She said when officers arrived, he fell through the ceiling and on top of one of them. Plevy says the man was treated for cuts and returned to the hospital. (AP)

Court: Cities can sue big banks under anti-bias law
POLITICS Why couldn’t we all just get along? That’s what President Trump wants to know about the Civil War. In an interview with The Washington Examiner, Trump made several puzzling claims about Andrew Jackson and the Civil War, suggesting that he was uncertain about the origin of the conflict while claiming that Jackson, the seventh president, was upset about a war that began 16 years after his death. Trump said he wonders why issues “could not have been worked out” in order to prevent the secession of 11 Southern states and a war that lasted four years and killed more than 600,000 soldiers. “People don’t realize, you know, the Civil War, if you think about it, why?” Trump said, according to an interview transcript released Monday. “People don’t ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?” Trump ruminated after lauding Jackson, the populist president whom he and his staff have cited as a role model. “He was really angry that he saw what was happening with regard to the Civil War,” Trump said. “He said, ‘There’s no reason for this.’ ” But Jackson died in 1845, and the Civil War — stemming from disputes between the North and South over slavery — began in 1861. favor and ordered a lower court to re-examine the city’s lawsuit against Wells Fargo and Bank of America to be sure that there is a direct connection between the lending practices and the city’s losses. Miami claimed that Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Citigroup targeted African-American and Hispanic borrowers for costlier and riskier loans than those offered to white customers. Wells Fargo and Bank of America appealed the ruling by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to the Supreme Court,
arguing that cities can’t use the Fair Housing Act to sue over reductions in tax revenues. The banks said the connection between a loan and the tax consequences is too tenuous. Justice Stephen Breyer wrote in his majority opinion that a city can make a claim for financial harm under the anti-discrimination housing law. But he said tying the loans to a drop in tax revenues is more difficult, and there must be “some direct relation between the injury asserted and the injurious conduct alleged.” MARK SHERMAN (AP)

Trump ponders why Civil War wasn’t averted
COURTS The Supreme Court ruled Monday that cities may sue banks under the federal anti-discrimination in housing law, but said those lawsuits must tie claims about predatory lending practices among minority customers directly to declines in property taxes. The justices’ 5-3 ruling partly validated a novel approach by Miami to try to hold banks accountable under the federal Fair Housing Act for foreclosures during the housing crisis. But the court still threw out an appellate ruling in Miami’s

A foolproof way to avoid lusting males When faced with an unwanted male admirer, some women give out a fake number, sneak away or flat out reject them. For female dragonflies, they suddenly plunge to the ground and fake their own death to dodge pesky advances from a male, according to a recent study published in the journal Ecology. One researcher noticed the intriguing tactic while collecting eggs of the moorland hawker dragonfly in the Swiss Alps for climate change research, Live Science reports. He then initiated a study and the behavior was reported in 27 out of 31 dragonfly encounters. When males eventually buzzed away, the females would fly off. For moorland hawker females, mating more than once could harm their reproductive system, hence their extreme strategy. (EXPRESS)

Police on Sunday cordon off the scene of a poolside shooting in San Diego.
Shooter called ex during fatal spree SAN DIEGO A gunman despondent over a recent breakup opened fire at a poolside birthday party and phoned his ex-girlfriend as he kept shooting strangers, killing one woman and injuring six other partygoers before he was killed by officers, police said Monday. Peter Selis, 49, sat on a pool chair during most of the rampage, calmly shooting guests with a .45-caliber handgun. The victims were black and Latino and Selis was white, but police don’t think race was a factor. “These victims were just in his vicinity when he committed this terrible tragedy,” Chief Shelley Zimmerman said. “What started as a celebration of a friend’s birthday party turned into a tragedy of epic proportions.” Witnesses said Selis was

wearing a black coat and sitting alone during the party for a man’s 50th birthday Sunday at an apartment complex in La Jolla. At one point, the guest of honor invited the man to join the party. That’s when Selis drew a gun and shot the honoree in the torso. “He didn’t stand up. He didn’t say anything. He just opened fire,” party guest Demetrius Griffin said. After shooting two people, Selis called his ex-girlfriend to tell her what he had done. “It is apparent that Selis wanted his ex-girlfriend to listen in as he carried out his rampage,” Zimmerman said. Selis shot four black women, two black men and one Latino man. Two victims were in critical condition but were expected to live. ELLIOT SPAGAT AND JULIE WATSON (AP)

nation+world AUSTIN, TEXAS An attacker with a machete-like knife fatally stabbed one person and wounded at least three others Monday on the University of Texas at Austin campus, and police said a suspect was in custody. Student Rachel Prichett said she was standing in line at a food truck near a gym when she saw a man with a large knife approach the person standing behind her. “He grabbed him by the shoulder and shoved the knife in it. I just started running as fast as I could,” Prichett said. Police identified the suspect
as a 21-year-old student named Kendrex J. White, who was armed with a hunting knife. The university canceled classes and scheduled events for the rest of the day. Police said it would be “premature” to discuss a motive. University Police Chief David Carter said all the stabbings occurred within a one-block area as the attacker “calmly walked around the plaza.” Travis County Emergency Medical Services tweeted that one person died at the scene, near the gym. The others were taken to the hospital with potentially

Adulation for autocrats Trump is cultivating authoritarian leaders in a bid to reset relations — but at what cost? POLITICS It’s no longer just Vladimir Putin. As President Trump settles into office, his affections for totalitarian leaders have grown beyond Russia’s president to include strongmen around the globe. Egyptian President AbdelFattah el-Sissi has had his opponents gunned down, but Trump praised him for doing “a fantastic job.” Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is a junta chief whose military jailed dissidents after taking power in a coup, yet Trump offered to meet with him at the White House. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has eroded basic freedoms of his citizens, but after a recent political victory, he got a congratulatory call from Trump. Then there’s the case of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. He is accused of the extrajudicial killing of hundreds of drug users, and he maligned then-President Barack Obama as a “son of a whore” at an international summit last year. Yet on Sunday, in what the White House characterized as a “very friendly conversation,” Trump invited Duterte to Washington for an official visit. In a undeniable shift in American foreign policy, Trump is cultivating authoritarian leaders, one after another, in an effort to reset relations following an era of ostracism and public shaming by Obama and his predecessors. For instance, it has become an almost daily occurrence for Trump to gush about Chinese President Xi Jinping since their Mar-a-Lago summit last month. Trump has called Xi “a very good man,” “highly respected” and a “gentleman,” as he tries to

persuade Xi to convince North Korea to scale back or give up its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Trump’s praise is not limited to potential U.S. allies. Even as North Korean leader Kim Jung Un ratchets up his provocations, Trump called Un “a smart cookie” in a CBS News interview over the weekend. On Monday, Trump told Bloomberg News he would be “honored” to personally meet with Un “under the right circumstances.” Every American president since at least the 1970s has used his office to champion human rights and democratic values around the world. Yet so far at least, Trump has willingly turned a blind eye to dictators’ records of brutality and oppression in hopes that these leaders might become his partners in isolating North Korea or fighting terrorism. A tipping point for many Trump critics was his invitation to Duterte. “This is a man who has boasted
U.S. ‘seal of approval’? Human rights activists are concerned that President Trump is condoning the actions of dictators when he is warm to them or invites them to visit. “Inviting these men to the White House in effect places the United States’ seal of approval on their heinous actions,” said Rob Berschinski, senior vice president at Human Rights First. He added that “nothing excuses President Trump’s clear inclination to reward mass-murderers and torturers with undeserved honors.” (TWP)
publicly about killing his own citizens,” Sen. Benjamin Cardin, D-Md., said of Duterte in a statement. “Ignoring human rights will not advance U.S. interests in the Philippines or any place else. alliances or create new ones. Trump’s outreach is designed to isolate North Korea in the AsiaPacific region and to build coalitions to defeat the Islamic State in the Middle East and North Africa, senior administration officials said. But Michael McFaul, a former U.S. ambassador to Russia under Obama, posited that the Trump administration may be naive in calculating that personal outreach and warm praise will persuade authoritarian leaders to support U.S. interests. “The converse of that is that these leaders are taking him for a ride,” McFaul said. “He tends to over-personalize relationships between states. He says China’s ‘raping’ us, then he meets President Xi and suddenly he’s this wise man with whom he has a good chemistry. I hope this will produce outcomes that are good for us, but right now it’s producing outcomes that are good for China.” PHILIP RUCKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
MEDIA The turmoil at Fox News continued on Monday with the ouster of co-president Bill Shine, who succeeded Roger Ailes amid a sexual harassment scandal last summer despite Shine’s alleged role in abetting Ailes in tolerating a workplace hostile to women. Shine, a 20-year Fox News veteran, appeared to have the backing of Fox chairman Rupert Murdoch. Just last week, in the wake of the firing of Bill O’Reilly, the two were seen at a lunch. Shine ran the programming side of the media empire, while Fox co-president Jack Abernethy, also a longtime Fox News executive, runs the business side of the company. Rupert Murdoch announced Shine’s departure in an internal memo Monday afternoon: “Sadly, Bill Shine resigned today,” he wrote. “I know Bill was respected and liked by everyone at Fox News.” Murdoch said Suzanne Scott, Shine’s deputy, will be president of programming. Jay Wallace, executive vice president of news, will be president of news. Shine has been implicated in the harassment scandal, and an unrelated racial discrimination action, via several lawsuits filed by Fox employees. Among the claims are that Shine ignored or played down complaints and concealed Ailes’ behavior. Shine has also repeatedly denied any knowledge of Ailes’ allegedly unethical or illegal behavior. Yield signs for Trump in first deal

Nine executions delayed as court fight continues Ohio Gov. John Kasich on Monday delayed nine executions as a court fight continues over the constitutionality of the state’s lethal injection process, including the use of midazolam, a sedative used in problematic executions in at least three states. The announcement postponed the execution of child killer Ronald Phillips until July. The delay comes before an appeals court is set to hear Ohio’s appeal of a federal judge’s order that found the state’s latest execution process unconstitutional. (AP)

to avert a shutdown on Friday. Democrats were surprised by just how many concessions they extracted in the trillion-dollar deal, considering that Republicans have unified control of government. Here are the eight most notable areas where Trump caved in his
1. There are explicit restrictions to block the border wall. The final agreement goes further than withholding funding for wall construction. It puts strict limitations on how Trump can use new money for border security (e.g., to invest in new technology and repair existing fencing). The $1.5 billion for border security is also half as much as the White House requested. Additionally, there are no cuts in funding to sanctuary cities, and no money for a deportation force.
2. Non-defense domestic spending will go up, despite the Trump team’s insistence he wouldn’t let that happen. T he president c a l led for $18 billion in cuts. Instead, he’s going to sign a budget with lots of sweeteners that grow the size of government. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., made sure $4.6 billion got put aside to permanently extend health benefits to 22,000 retired Appalachian coal miners and their families. House Minority
Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., made sure $295 million was included to shore up Medicaid in Puerto Rico. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D- N.Y., got $61 million to reimburse local law enforcement agencies for the cost of protecting Trump when he travels to his residences in Florida and New York.
3. Obama’s cancer moonshot is generously funded. The administration asked to slash spending at the National Institutes of Health by $1.2 billion for the rest of this fiscal year. Instead, the NIH will get a $2 billion boost. Republican appropriators who care about biomedical research delivered. Trump also failed in his efforts to cut money for other kinds of scientific inquiry. For example, he proposed defunding the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy. Instead, it is getting a $15 million increase.

just 1 percent, with no staff cuts. As part of a compromise, the EPA gets $80 million less than last year, but the budget is $8 billion.
5. He didn’t defund Planned Parenthood. Despite the best efforts of social conservatives, the group will continue to receive funding at current levels.
6. The president got less than half as much for the military as he said was necessary. Trump repeatedly prodded Congress to raise military spending by $30 billion. He’s getting $12.5 billion, with an additional $2.5 billion if/when he delivers a detailed plan on how to defeat ISIS.

7. Democrats say they forced Republicans to withdraw more than 160 riders. These unrelated policy measures, which each could have been a poison pill, would have done things like get rid of the fiduciary rule and water down environmental regulations.
8. To keep negotiations moving, the White House agreed last week to continue paying Obamacare subsidies. This money, which goes to insurance companies, reduces out-ofpocket expenses for low-income people who get coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Trump justifies giving up on this because of the potential to resolve the bigger issue by repealing Obamacare.
A Dallas paramedic responding to a reported shooting was shot and critically injured Monday morning. Police said they sent a robot into a house where they believed the attacker was barricaded and found the suspected shooter, who had taken his own life, along with the body of a second person. Dallas’ interim police chief said that the violent burst in a residential area appeared to have begun as some kind of disagreement involving neighbors. A fourth person was also seriously wounded and brought to the hospital, officials said. (THE WASHINGTON POST) WEATHER

INJURY UPDATE
WIZARDS AT CELTICS | GAME 2 TONIGHT AT 8, TNT
NBA PLAYOFFS Last week, when the Wizards faced a crossroads in their firstround series against Atlanta, John Wall fired off text messages to forwards Otto Porter Jr. and Kelly Oubre Jr. “I told those guys just bring y’all energy,” Wall said. Those words were intended to guide Porter and Oubre through Game 5 against the Hawks, but the tone should still resonate for Washington in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Boston tonight. On Sunday, Markieff Morris, the 6-foot-10 power forward, left the game with a badly sprained left ankle. In his absence, Oubre started the third quarter alongside Porter. The rangy young forwards possess complementary skills — although Porter, 23, has
developed a more consistent jump shot in his fourth year and Oubre, 21, has more of a flair for tomahawk finishes. On Sunday, Washington’s reliance on a small lineup pairing Porter and Oubre in the frontcourt coincided with the team’s worst quarter of the 123-111 loss in Game 1. The Wizards started the game on a 16-0 run and were up by as many as 17 in the first quarter, but the small Celtics lineup that it had stomped over earlier in the game flourished with ball movement. Disjointed team defense forced players into scrambling positions; either Porter or Oubre got caught as the late defenders on the Celtics’ first trio of made 3-pointers. Jae Crowder, who has shot 27.3 percent from beyond the arc during the playoffs, suddenly became a downtown threat, hitting three consecutive treys and getting postseason career highs of 24 points and six made 3-pointers. Morris sat in the locker room

longing to return to the game while Boston outscored Washington 36-16 in the third quarter. The decision wasn’t his to make, however, and Morris remained on the trainer’s table. Even if Morris makes a quick recovery and plays in Game 2, matchups with the Celtics should force the Wizards to play small ball for stretches. That could mean more Porter and Oubre on the floor together, even though Sunday showed the Wizards will need more than just “energy” out of their forwards.
‘I’m playing’ with sprain, Morris says Wizards power forward Markieff Morris needed roundthe-clock treatment after spraining his left ankle in a Game 1 loss Sunday in Boston. But he said Monday that he’ll be ready for Game 2 tonight. “I’m playing tomorrow. It’s final,” Morris said while receiving shocks from an electronic muscle stimulator. “There’s nothing the doctors can say to me for me not to be able to play.” Coach Scott Brooks was less certain about Morris’ status. “I don’t want to make any calls on anything. ... It’s a sprain and our medical team will all get together and do what’s best for him,” Brooks said Monday afternoon. “But right now, he’s out until we see how he feels.” eels. C.B.

GM says ‘disappointing’ relief staff has the ability to rediscover command NATIONALS One month into this season, the Nationals’ bullpen is statistically one of the worst in the majors. Washington entered Monday with the highest bullpen ERA (5.80) of any NL team. Only Mariners and Tigers relievers have been worse. Nationals relievers have allowed 1.86 home runs per nine innings. As of Monday morning, only the Phillies and Tigers bullpens were worse. Nationals relievers have appeared in all 25 games and surrendered
46 earned runs. Only four teams had given up more. “The bullpen has been disappointing. They’ve got great stuff, and they need to pitch better,” Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said. “They have the ability to do so. They’ve got the track record that they have done it, and they need to do it.” Other numbers show the Nats’ bullpen has potential. Entering Monday, Washington relievers had thrown a greater percentage of pitches in the strike zone (49.4) than any other team in baseball. They had walked the fewest men per nine innings (2.85) of any NL bullpen — only Rangers and Angels

relievers had walked fewer. In other words, Nationals relievers throw strikes, a crucial habit in the later innings when giving away base runners often equates to giving away runs. But Nationals relievers also had thrown fewer first-pitch strikes (56.3 percent) than those of all but three teams in the majors. So, although finding the strike zone hasn’t been a problem, command within the zone — an oft-repeated phrase around struggling staffs — has been. “They’ve got to pitch to thei r c apabi l ities,” R i zzo said, “and if they do that, we really like our bullpen.” CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Never too old to train Va. trainer, 80, teaches his aging clients how to stay in fighting shape
FITNESS A 6-foot-2 personal trainer with the lean physique and toned muscles of a basketball pro might seem an unlikely match for Charlene Nilsen. A homemaker from Occoquan, Va., she is 77 years old, has a bad back and just had both knees replaced. But Nilsen’s trainer, Lawrence Dawson, knows where her body has been in ways that most trainers could never understand. Dawson is 80. To him, Nilsen is a baby. But that doesn’t mean he lets her off the hook. “Rotate the heels,” he said recently as she swung a set of barbells from left to right. “Abs are nice and tight. Rotate, there we go, there we go.” Dawson, a retired Army colonel, has worked for 17 years as a personal fitness trainer at the Chinn Aquatics & Fitness Center in Woodbridge, Va. He is the oldest trainer there by about three decades. He started at an age when most people are thinking

about retiring, and he works four days a week, pushing his clients, most of whom are of retirement age themselves, through rigorous drills that would fatigue many people half their age. They crack heavy ropes up and down like whips. They contort their torsos into crunches from an awkward, tilted-back angle. They engage in “skull-crushers,” named for what could happen if a free weight were to fall during a bench press. At first glance, Dawson looks like he could be in his 50s. But
he has felt the ravages of age — a balky knee, a wrist he has to hold a certain way when he plays racquetball, hearing aids tucked discreetly in his ears. These are the very things that attract many of his clients. “I just felt that he would understand my needs and my limitations better,” says Bill Skinner, an 80-year-old retiree from Manassas, Va., who has been working with Dawson twice a week for three or four years. For Dawson, older bodies represent a fascinating challenge.

“The body, as Churchill said, is a conundrum wrapped up in an enigma,” he says. “At 70-plus, you probably can’t do the 100 [meter dash] in under 25 [seconds], but you have an intuitive understanding of what your body can do.” His methods were honed during 25 years in the Army, including stints in Germany, Congo, Nigeria and Vietnam. He is a two-time Northern Virginia senior Olympian in the 75-and-over category. His signature display of abdominal prowess involves grabbing an overhead bar and pulling his feet up to meet it. He’s not opposed to showing off; in fact, he encourages his clients to cultivate the kind of physical swagger that comes with knowing they’re in shape. Judith, his wife of 56 years with whom he has four children and 10 grandchildren, cannot imagine him wanting to retire. “He just needs to move,” she says. “When we go on vacation, if there’s no gym in the hotel, he will create his own protocol in the hotel room. … He has the metabolism of a hummingbird.”

She’s on a high again. What’s up? Q. I’m worried my sister is showing signs of manic depression. Her highs and lows have gotten extreme. She recently quit her job to start school for something outside of her field, and she somehow thinks she will make a ton of money. I’ve never seen her significantly depressed, but she has gone through phases like this before and they always peter out. CONCERNED SISTER, VA Right now, whether she is diagnosable with something is less pertinent than whether her behavior might screw her over for the future. True mania or not, her current path sounds risky. Does she have any insight into her patterns, or recognize the damage — if any — that past “petering out” has done? Start the conversation not with some overarching mental health issue
in mind but rather with the evidence you have in hand: the financial risk, lack of clarity of her plan and the times her pursuits have stalled. It is a good sign that she has never overtly plunged into depressive periods, but you may not be seeing all the symptoms. Regardless, first addressing her patterns of impulsivity, in a respectful way, is the loving thing to do.
Life is hard enough without deciding to stomp on excited feelings. But yes, there is the important question of “pushing things.” What does that phrase mean to you? Of course, proposing marriage after two months is likely inadvisable. But does “pushing things” also include making sure your commitment is a monogamous one? Talking about individual hopes and dreams and seeing if they align? Expressing how this feels different from past relationships? The latter are reasonable steps when you are developing a strong attachment to someone and have high hopes for the future. Don’t go by anyone else’s rules but your own. And while booking a DJ is premature, hiding your feelings from the person you want to be with is a type of game-playing that won’t serve you well either. With so much Trump humor, it’s easy to see how fatigue could set in COMEDY One hundred days in, TV’s Trump humor has hit a wall. How could it not? The material is so bountiful, the comedic workload so relentless and daily occurrences so absurd as to blur into an easily lampooned travesty of leadership. “You know what’s crazy?” asked “Daily Show” correspondent Hasan Minhaj during a monologue at Saturday’s White House correspondents’ dinner. “Every day on ‘The Daily Show,’ we do these jokes all the time: ‘The administration lies, Trump flip-flops’ — it doesn’t matter. His supporters still trust him. It has not stopped his momentum at all. It’s almost as if ‘The Daily
Show’ should be on C-SPAN. It has zero impact.” A sad but true realization — and to think, only weeks ago, it seemed that TV’s many joketellers and satirists might have held the only effective key to upsetting a president who is 100 percent ego. Could it be possible to laugh a president out of office? TV’s funniest people, already loopy from the election cycle from hell, got very busy: Seth Meyers made serious inroads into Jon Stewart territory on NBC’s “Late Night”; Stephen Colbert at last turned his “Late Show” ratings around with wickedly vital Trump jokes; TBS’ “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” and HBO’s “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” supplemented the outrage with smartly researched pieces that are as stirring to liberal audiences as

Are the Trump jokes boring yet?

they are entertaining. But an itinerant late-night viewer is already adept at noticing how similar the Trumprelated monologues have become, regardless of who delivers them.
It’s hard to imagine the stamina it will require for all of these hosts to keep the same jokes aloft 1,000 or more days from now, and harder still to imagine the audience’s appetite for Trump jokes,
particularly when they don’t, as Minhaj said, seem to make a shred of difference. Take Anthony Atamanuik’s “The President Show,” which airs Thursdays on Comedy Central. Its calculated misjudgment is that there is unlimited demand for Trump lampoonage. Atamanuik’s impression has been called one of the best around, but the premiere episode last week failed to make a clear case for it. Part talk show, part sketches, “The President Show” has strong jokes, but feels like a gentle primer for fans of TV comedy who also happened to have just woken up from a year-long coma. However long he’s around, Trump will be an easy target. But soon enough, audiences are going to want to laugh about something else. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A behind-the-scenes look at the stories and scandals of Donald Trump’s campaign, from Pulitzer Prize winner DAVID A. FAHRENTHOLD.
“It takes a particular sort of insularity to hire a pro-war, antiTrump white guy as a contribution to diversity on the NYT editorial page.” DAVID ROBERTS, writing for vox.com about why The New York Times shouldn’t have hired Bret Stephens from The Wall Street journal as an editorial writer. In announcing his hire, The Times said Stephens, who is conservative, would help the paper “broaden the range” of its commentary. In his first column, Stephens made an argument for skepticism regarding climate change, which provoked a lot of pushback from readers. Roberts called out The Times for elevating climate change skepticism to the level of “reasonable debate.”
@DANOBRIENPOKER, tweeting about reports on social media that a woman turned down a scoreboard marriage proposal Sunday night at a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park. “He deserves it for putting a private moment in such a public place and putting such pressure on her,” @SadGalLaurie tweeted.

“Feeling bad for the guy whose marriage proposal was turned down at Fenway? Don’t. Don’t put a girl on the spot in front of 50,000 strangers.”
“Pope be like: ‘Pack it up, pack it in. Let me begin. I came to win, battle me, that’s a sin.’ ” @PATVANDIEST, imagining that Pope Francis was rapping the lyrics of “Jump Around” by House of Pain in a recent photo. By holding the microphone close to his mouth and gesturing, Francis looks like he is about to drop a verse. “Pope’s rap battle showing so fly hype men have to hold him back, back,” @justjohnhayes tweeted, captioning the pic. @

@TFPROXY, tweeting about this man, who was photographed riding a Toronto bus with a 30-gallon barrel of Taco Bell Cinnabon frosting. No one knows who he is, or what he was doing, but many are jealous. “I will follow him to the ends of the earth,” @Justyn tweeted.
“I tried to change it with my hair.” @JILJILEC, who created a Twitter th thread of staged scenes of a Kermit the Fr puppet acting out the lyrics to the Frog S Solange Knowles soul ballad “Cranes in the Sky.” As in the song, Kermit tries w ways to get rid of pain, such as “drink it away,” “dance it away” or “cry it a away.” The thread quickly went viral, an was retweeted more than 15,000 and times. Solange even noticed, and re replied on Twitter that it made her cry.

77 | 53 TODAY: This is a good-looking day. Less humid air filters in, but the air is comfortably warm and skies are mostly sunny. The only nuisance may be the occasional wind gust over 25 mph, but most of the time the breezes from the west are pleasant. Open those windows — humidity is low and temperatures will fall steadily overnight.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You’re likely to discover something that gives you pause as you consider where you are and where you are trying to go. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Now is not the time to ask questions that are not directly related to the task at hand. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) What you see is what you get — in most cases.
