West Virginia bans boring selfies
Pittsburgh police are fine with giving peace a chance, as long as you say it and don’t spray it. Myers Williams has been charged with causing nearly $24,000 in damage by spray-painting 34 images, mostly of peace signs, on 13 downtown buildings. Police say the spree occurred from about 4:20 to 4:50 a.m. on March 18. Williams was arraigned Monday on 13 counts of criminal mischief, one for each building. (AP)
If you want to share your voting experience on social media in West Virginia, you’ll have to find some way other than taking a photo in the voting booth. West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant said Friday that it’s illegal to photograph any part of the voting process, and no electronic devices are allowed in the voting booth. Signs are posted in every precinct, and poll workers have been instructed to tell people not to have devices out while voting. (AP)

The road trip of a lifetime NATIONAL PARKS A journey of 411 national parks begins with a single monument. Mikah Meyer visited the Washington Monument on Friday, just as more than 600,000 other people do every year. But for Meyer, it was especially momentous: It was the first stop, he says, on a threeyear trip to visit every single national park in the country. In the coming months, Meyer plans to quit his two jobs, dump his possessions at his pastor’s house, move from his North Bethesda apartment to a utility van and set out to become the youngest person ever to visit all 411 National Park Service sites. The trip will take the 30-yearold to 25 battlefields and military sites, 19 nature preserves, 129 historical spots, 112 memorials and monuments, four scenic roadways, five national rivers, 10 national seashores and more. “It’s not just Grand Canyon, Acadia, Yellowstone,” he said, standing at the base of the monument. “It is this whole system of things that make us Americans.”

Mikah Meyer at the top of the Washington Monument Friday, kicking off his quest to become the youngest person to visit all 411 national parks.
The 1,116-day road trip he has mapped out is a spiritual quest to connect with his late father. It’s also, he says, a chance to demonstrate that gay men can be outdoorsy and to persuade youngsters glued to their smartphone screens to check out the natural beauty in their home states. He wants to take this trip now, while he is healthy and somewhat unencumbered. (His boyfriend balked when Meyer told him, a few weeks into their relationship, that he was planning to eventually

skip town for a three-year road trip. But they’re still together, and his boyfriend is considering coming along on the road.) Starting Friday, which was the 11th anniversary of his father’s death, Meyer is using his down time to check off all the parks in the D.C. region. The Mall area alone accounts for at least a dozen, since the Park Service counts each memorial as a separate unit. Farther afield, Prince William Forest Park, the George Washington Memorial Parkway and Rock Creek Park make the list. He is still working for now — he directs residential programming at a boarding school and sings in the National Cathedral’s professional choir. But in June, he’ll hit the road full-time. The National Park Travelers Club recognizes people who make it to every park (and even hosts conventions for them). So far, 37 people have done it, according to the club’s secretary, Craig Bailey. “I think it’s really neat he’s trying to do them all one go of it. He’s gonna leave and just go, go, go, go, go,” Bailey enthused. “I don’t know of anyone that has just headed out on the road and just kept going.” JULIE ZAUZMER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Three lemurs born at the National Zoo Three red-ruffed lemurs were born at the National Zoo. The lemurs are said to be healthy and strong, according to zookeepers. The lemurs are considered critically endangered. They were born April 5 to Molly, who is 6 years old. Molly is “nursing and carrying the babies,” the zoo said. In the coming weeks, zoo veterinarians are expected to do an exam on the new lemurs and figure out their sexes. The new babies and adult lemurs can be seen at the zoo’s small-mammal house. (TWP)

GOP to sue McAuliffe over felons voting Republicans: Governor overreached in granting ballot rights to them

VIRGINIA Republican lawmakers in Virginia will file a lawsuit challenging Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s decision to allow more than 200,000 felons to vote in November, GOP leaders said Monday. Republicans argue the governor has overstepped his constitutional authority with a clear political ploy designed to help the campaign of his friend and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton in the important swing state this fall. “Gov. McAuliffe’s flagrant disregard for the Constitution of Virginia and the rule of law must not go unchecked,” Senate Republican Leader Thomas Norment said in a statement. He added that McAuliffe’s predecessors and previous attorneys general examined this issue and concluded that Virginia’s governor can’t issue blanket restorations. Republica ns have hired Charles J. Cooper, a Washington, D.C., attorney known for defending California’s ban on gay marriage before the U.S. Supreme Court in 2013. GOP leaders did not say when they will file the lawsuit. They said it would not be paid for with taxpayer dollars.

Man barricades himself in armory, is arrested
Gov. Terry McAuliffe holds up the order he signed in April to restore the voting rights of more than 200,000 felons in Virginia.
The pending legal fight highlights the important role Virginia will likely play in this year’s presidential contest. Clinton could benefit from a surge of new minority voters, who typically vote Democratic — although even if all 206,000 ex-felons signed up, they would represent only about 4 percent of total registered voters in the state. McAuliffe has said the move was not politically motivated. A lawyer for former Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine said in 2010 that the restoration of rights must be done on a case-by-case basis. A blanket order restoring voting rights would be a “rewrite of the law,” Mark Rubin, a counselor to Kaine, said in a letter at the time.

A spokesman for McAuliffe said Republicans have yet to express any specific constitutional objections to the executive order. “The governor is disappointed that Republicans would go to such lengths to continue locking people who have served their time out of their democracy,” Brian Coy said in a statement. “These Virginians are qualified to vote and they deserve a voice, not more partisan schemes to disenfranchise them.” Virginia, Iowa, Kentucky a nd F lor id a a re t he on ly states that strip all felons of their voting rights for life unless a state official restores them, according to the D.C.based Sentencing P roject. “Foamhenge,” a life-size plastic foam replica of England’s famous Stonehenge monument, has attracted curious visitors from around the world. Now, more than a decade after it was installed in Rockbridge County, Va., as an April Fool’s Day stunt, Foamhenge needs a new home. Artist Mark Cline must move the monument before Aug. 1 because it sits on property that will become part of the new Natural Bridge State Park. Cline built the free attraction to entice travelers off the road and said he has been pleasantly surprised by its enduring popularity. Cline is offering to give the replica to whoever wants it — as long as the owner is ready to pay for shipping and repair costs, and is willing to withstand a constant flow of visitors. (AP)

Federal agency says the problems could have led to derailments TRANSPORTATION Metro halted rail traffic or slowed train speeds at 10 locations in April after federal inspectors found track defects that could have caused derailments and other problems, according to federal safety reports. All of the tracks are now back in normal use after repairs were made, officials said. But the documents disclose new examples of
problems that Metro overlooked until the Federal Transit Administration assumed safety oversight of the agency in October. On April 10, for example, federal safety inspectors checking the system as part of a “safety blitz” found incorrectly fastened rails along more than 38 feet of pocket track on an aerial structure east of the Stadium-Armory Metro station. Metro inspectors had overlooked the defect — which could cause a derailment — in nine visual inspections in the preceding month, federal officials said.

A pocket track is a stretch of rail where trains can be parked off the main line. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said the federal reports offer new evidence of the need for Metro to take aggressive steps to repair deteriorating equipment and intensify the commitment to safety among managers and workers. Asked why Metro had not identified the track defects before the FTA review, Foxx answered, “They weren’t looking.”

CSX updated the number following an assessment of the site. The Florida-based company said that overnight, rail cars that were not involved in Sunday’s derailment were moved from the site along with several cars that had derailed. No injuries were reported as a result of the derailment, which happened around 6:40 a.m. Sunday, but hazardous material the

Sodium hydroxide, also known as corrosive lye, is used to produce household products including paper, soap and detergents, CSX said. CSX said it is preparing to clean up the derailment site, which will involve replacing soil and laying new track. CSX officials haven’t said how long the cleanup might take. The company said ongoing

Carolyn piggybacked her daughter at times. They were rescued on day five after a helicopter pilot spotted “help” signs Carolyn made from fern fronds. (AP)

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz, right, exchanges words with Donald Trump supporters during a campaign visit to Marion, Ind.
Ind., Trump supporters confronted Cruz. “Lyin’ Ted!” yelled one, using Trump’s pet name for his rival. “What do you like about him?” Cruz asked. “Name one thing.” “Everything,” the man replied. With math and momentum on Trump’s side, his team sensed an Indiana knockout. “Indiana is Ted Cruz’s firewall. It’s where he says that it’s make-or-break for him,” Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski said Monday. “And if he loses tomorrow night, he has to once again try and articulate
why he is still in this race.” Cruz already has made major efforts to win Indiana. Last week, he announced that Carly Fiorina would be his running mate, a decision that was unusually early in the process. And before that he reached an alliance of sorts with Kasich, who agreed to stop radio and TV advertising in Indiana. Today features a primary on the Democratic side, too. Polls show a close race is likely between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, who holds a commanding lead in delegates. THOMAS BEAUMONT AND STEVE PEOPLES (AP)

POLITICS Ted Cruz’s conservative crusade for the presidency fought for new life Monday ahead of an Indiana vote that could effectively end the GOP’s primary season. The Texas senator hinted at an exit strategy even as he vowed to compete to the end against surging Republican front-runner Donald Trump. “I am in for the distance — as long as we have a viable path to victory,” Cruz told reporters after a campaign stop in Osceola, Ind. “The entire country, millions of Americans, are praying for this state,” he later added. “The entire country is depending on the state of Indiana to pull us back from this cliff.” Cruz is in danger today of losing a seventh consecutive state. Like Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Cruz is mathematically eliminated from reaching a delegate majority before the Republican convention in July. Cruz retreated to Indiana more than a week ago, hoping a win could at least help him deny Trump an outright primary victory and lead to a contested convention. But a recent poll of likely Indiana voters showed Trump holding a commanding lead. At a stop in Monday in Marion,

CIA’s odd plot to kill bin Laden a second time Navy SEALs may have killed Osama bin Laden in a raid five years ago Sunday, but anyone following the CIA on Twitter might think it all just happened. In a deeply bizarre social media marketing move Sunday, the agency “live-tweeted” the raid as if it were happening in real time. Starting about 1 p.m. the CIA tweeted out events from the day of the raid with time stamps. The tweets were connected with the hashtag #UBLRaid, and the event concluded at 5:01 p.m. Some praised the agency for commemorating the event. More, though, criticized it. Jezebel called the stunt “both bizarre and extremely tone deaf.” Many others took to Twitter to express their discontent. The CIA’s Twitter account has long been a hotbed of controversy. From its inception in 2014, when it tweeted, “We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet,” the CIA Twitter feed has been criticized for its tone by various outlets. Once, the agency even accidentally led some of its followers to believe North Korea was invading South Korea by failing to add a hashtag noting that it was marking the anniversary of the 1950 event. Despite snafus like these, the CIA defends its Twitter presence, arguing that it’s a means of reaching people who otherwise wouldn’t be interested in the agency. TRAVIS M. ANDREWS

nation+world TECHNOLOGY An Australian man long rumored to be associated with the digital currency Bitcoin has publicly identified himself as its creator, a claim that could end one of the tech world’s biggest mysteries. BBC News said Monday that Craig Wright told the media outlet he is the man previously known by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. The computer scientist, inventor and academic said he launched the currency in 2009 with the help of others. Wright made similar claims to the Economist magazine, which
said on its website it still has “nagging” questions about Wright’s claim. He also wrote a lengthy blog post to assert his role. The BBC said Wright supported his claim by signing digital messages using cryptographic keys used during the early days of Bitcoin. Bitcoin is designed for secure financial transactions that require no central authority — no banks, no government regulators. That makes it attractive to off-thegrid types, including criminals and those who want to evade tax authorities, although Bitcoin

Alejandro Garcia Padilla said a more significant default could occur July 1 if Congress doesn’t restore the government’s ability to restructure debt under Chapter 9. (AP)
Syria’s military extended its unilateral cease-fire around Damascus for 48 hours Monday as the U.S. and Russia tried to restore a partial truce for the entire country. American officials said one idea being considered by the U.S. side is a detailed map that it would draw up with Russia laying out “safe zones” where civilians and members of moderate opposition groups covered by the truce could be spared government attacks. Nearly all Detroit public schools were closed Monday after about half of the teachers called in sick to protest the possibility that some of them won’t get paid over the summer if the struggling district runs out of cash. Some teachers opt to receive their pay spread over 12 months. Teacher strikes are illegal under Michigan law, but sick-outs earlier this year caused tens of thousands of students to miss class. (AP)

First fatherhood blues Obama will be losing one of his closest White House advisers — his daughter Malia
POLITICS As he walked to Air Force One, President Barack Obama draped his arm around his daughter Malia’s back. She accompanied him on a recent trip to Chicago and Los Angeles, and he seemed giddy to have her along. With Malia’s high school graduation just a month away, Obama has grown wistful. The 17-yearold will be moving on — maybe soon. The White House said Sunday that she will enter Harvard in fall 2017 after taking a gap year. “Probably the thing I’m most proud of is, mainly as the assistant to Michelle Obama, I’ve raised two daughters who are amazing and I’m really, really proud of,” he told a group of college reporters visiting the White House last month. Sending a child out into the world is a pivotal moment for any parent. For the Obamas, the arc of Malia’s childhood has coincided with the arc of Barack Obama’s presidency. Malia came into the White House as a fifthgrader with her hair in twists. Now she is about 6 feet tall and lithe, with fashion magazines following her clothing choices. Fatherhood has been a central passion of the president’s. He was reared without his own father and was often absent when his daughters were very young as he campaigned for office, commuted to his job as an Illinois state legislator and later flew between Chicago and Washington as a U.S. senator. After being elected president, Obama spoke often of his excitement at living full time under the same roof as his family. The end of that season has been tough on him. At the recent state dinner honoring Canada, the first for both Malia and 14-year-old Sasha, their dad got misty during his toast to

Malia Obama, 17, came to the White House as a fifth-grader. In 2017, she’ll enter Harvard in the fall after a gap year.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau: “When I was first elected to this office, Malia was 10. And Sasha was just 7. And they grow up too fast. This fall, Malia heads off to college,” he said. “And I’m starting to choke up, so I’m going to wind down and say my remarks.” Obama has called Malia one of his best friends; she and Sasha have been among the people with whom he can talk about his work. Around the family dinner table most nights at 6:30, he listened to stories about middle-school friendships and shared his onthe-job challenges. Sometimes, his daughters took an interest. Obama has credited conversations with them for his decision to support gay marriage. Malia, who has been described by her parents as bookish and lawyerly, came to her father during an early crisis of his
presidency. As oil began spilling into the Gulf of Mexico, she peeked her head into her father’s bathroom door as he was shaving one morning and asked, “Did you plug the hole yet, Daddy?” Obama’s daughters are among
“I imagine watching Malia go off to college will be as emotional — if not more emotional — than the moment he leaves the White House next year.” JOSHUA DUBOIS, a former assistant to President Obama, on the impact of first daughter Malia growing up

the youngest to have grown up in the White House in modern times. Amy Carter was 9 when her parents moved into the White House, and Chelsea Clinton was 12. But the Obamas tried to keep their daughters out of the limelight and give them the space to be kids. At 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., the little girl to whom the president read Harry Potter got braces, and shed them. She started dating. She went to prom. “I think it’s fair to say the first time you see your daughter in heels, it’s a bit jarring,” the president said at the time. The president said she wants to be a filmmaker. Obama may be steeling himself for Malia’s gap year and her move to Cambridge, but he acknowledged to Ellen DeGeneres this winter that his daughter has no such qualms: “She’s ready.” KRISSAH THOMPSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Governor: Congress must act to help resolve default
Scientists say three Earth-like exoplanets described Monday in the journal Nature might represent our best-ever shot at finding signs of alien life. The planets were detected based on the dimming of the star they orbit, named TRAPPIST-1. The dwarf star is just one-eighth the mass of our sun and much cooler. As the three planets orbit, the star blinks and dims out of our view. Scientists use this dimming to calculate the size of the planets and their distance from their host star. These metrics help scientists say whether a world is rocky — as opposed to a planet composed of gas or ice — and whether it can host liquid water. The three worlds are close by, located just 40 light years away in the constellation Aquarius. This is the first time scientists have detected rocky planets in a system like this, making them great candidates for study. The Belgian researchers believe the worlds have one hot side that faces their star and one cold side plunged in eternal darkness. The planets are very close to their sun, orbiting it in just a few days. The first two planets are probably too close to have water covering their surfaces. Still, it’s possible that certain regions of the planet are just right for water. The third, most-distant planet’s orbit has yet to be determined, meaning it could fall into the perfect orbital range for water and life. RACHEL FELTMAN

Harper’s top months
Poor defense didn’t follow Murphy here NATIONALS Everyone in baseball has a reputation — or, as manager Dusty Baker calls it, a jacket. And even though second baseman Daniel Murphy’s jacket is below-average defense, Baker hasn’t seen that. “Until you prove that that jacket is what it is, reputations don’t mean anything to me,” Baker said this weekend. “You start all over with a clean slate. Murphy has done an outstanding job and no one works harder on it than him. And I’m sure he is aware what people say. But hey, I don’t care what they say, he’s done an outstanding job.” Through 23 games this season, Murphy was one of only seven qualified second basemen with no errors. Advanced defensive statistics are fickle early in the season and they yp penalize Murphy p y
for his range. But by some measures, Murphy has been a nearaverage defender, which is an improvement already. While his fielding technique may not be graceful, he has made mostly all the needed plays. “I’m pleased I haven’t dropkicked one,” Murphy said. Murphy said bench coach Chris Speier, who is in charge of coaching the infielders on defense, and fellow infielder Stephen Drew have offered the best advice on improving his consistency. Both have urged him to work on his setup before a play. “You have to put yourself in a good athletic position to start with or you’re always playing catch-up the whole way through,” he said. The two specific tips Speier and Drew have offered Murphy involve how he gets ready for a ground ball. “I get a little bit lazy with my left foot,” Murphy said. “The more my left foot hangs back, the less g give you have in your hands.

In first year with Nats, second baseman has no errors in 23 games
After hitting .286 with nine home runs and 24 RBIs in April, Bryce Harper was named the NL player of the month Monday. That month doesn’t even rank in the top three of the Nats slugger’s career.
Second baseman Daniel Murphy said advice from bench coach Chris Speier and infielder Stephen Drew has helped his consistency in the field.
Pitchers who can hit Enterting Monday, the Nationals’ pitching staff not only had the best ERA in baseball (2.30), but it also had the best batting average for pitchers (.196). “We talk a lot of [trash] to each other who can hit the best,” Max Scherzer said. “The thing is a lot of us can really hit.” (TWP)
They’re not as soft.” In a short amount of time, Murphy and double-play partner Danny Espinosa, at shortstop, have learned how to work together. Entering Monday’s game, the Nationals were tied with the Royals with eight errors, the fewest in
baseball, and had turned 25 double plays — most of them thanks to Espinosa and Murphy. “They’ve done well in a short period of time,” Baker said. “That’s what people don’t understand. That double-play unit has to be together. The only way to be together is to spend time together. While Murphy has worked to improve his defense, his bat has been a big boost for Washington. He has been the lineup’s most consistent hitter, more than even Bryce Harper. Entering Monday’s game, Murphy was third in baseball with a .365 average. His 1.002 OPS was eighth in the NL, and he had hits in 20 of his 23 games. JAMES WAGNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
3 April 2013 .344, 9 HRs, 18 RBIs
It’s hard to believe, but Harper got off to an even hotter start in 2013. He had two hits in seven of his first nine games of the season.
2 September 2015 .341, 10 HRs, 19 RBIs
Harper put up huge numbers despite pitchers not giving him much to hit at the end of his MVP season. He had 26 walks in 27 games and a .483 on-base percentage.
1 May 2015 .360, 13 HRs, 28 RBIs
During a three-game span, he had six home runs and 12 RBIs. His 1.379 OPS that month was significantly better than his 1.121 mark this April.

REDSKINS Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan announced Monday that the team released veteran cornerback Chris Culliver roughly one year after signing him to a four-year, $32 million contract. Culliver, 27, was in a precarious situation because he was coming off of a season-ending knee injury. He tore ligaments in his knee on Thanksgiving Day, had to have reconstructive surgery and is no lock to return to full strength by the start of the season. He also was owed $8 million for the 2016 season, although
that salary was not guaranteed. Culliver last season appeared in only six games while being hobbled by various knee injuries, some even before the season-ending ligament tear. He recorded 16 tackles and no interceptions. Following the addition of Josh Norman, whom Washington signed to a five-year, $75 million deal after his unexpected release by the Panthers two weeks ago, the emergence Bashaud Breeland and Friday’s drafting of Virginia Tech cornerback Kendall Fuller in the third round, Washington suddenly had options.

Leicester City clinches improbable English title
With only roughly $4 million in salary cap space, Washington needed to make a move to free up cash to sign its draft picks, and cutting Culliver made sense. McCloughan called it a difficult decision, however, because of his respect for Culliver, who was his highest-priced free agent acquisition last offseason. “I just spoke to him,” McCloughan told reporters Monday. “Very good conversation. Chris is a professional. This is the tough part about this business with any player, but especially with him.” MIKE JONES (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Leicester City secured an incredible first Premier League title without playing Monday after second-place Tottenham drew 2-2 at Chelsea. Leicester was playing in the second tier only two years ago, came close to be relegated again last year and started this season as 5,000-1 outsiders for the title. Now, for the first time in its 132-year history, Leicester is champion after building an insurmountable seven-point lead over Tottenham with two games left. The Foxes are just the sixth club since the inception of the Premier League in 1992 to win the title. (AP)

HelloFresh, a meal-kit delivery service, uses an in-house dietician to review each meal.
DIY-ish is delish, but … When it comes to your health, do popular meal-kit services deliver the goods? NUTRITION Meal-kit delivery services have grown from a novel startup concept to a billion-dollar industry in a few short years. You’ve probably heard of some of the bigger players by now: Blue Apron, HelloFresh, Plated, Chef’d, Purple Carrot. These companies essentially take meal planning and grocery shopping off your plate (pun intended) by curating a menu, bringing all the ingredients to your door and giving you step-by-step instructions for getting those meals on the table. Everything is brought to you in an insulated box in exact amounts: a single stalk of celery, a teaspoon of paprika in a little packet, a little vial of vinegar. You still do the chopping and cooking, but everything else is taken care of — except the dishes. There are many of these companies in the game, each with a slightly different marketing angle, all generally priced in the range of $10 to $15 per meal per person. The services are convenient, and word on the street is
that the food is truly tasty. But can these meal kits also help you eat a healthier diet? If you often find yourself facing 5 p.m. famished with nothing in the refrigerator and are likely to grab greasy takeout as a result, buying one of these plans, which typically cover you for two or three dinners a week, would probably translate into more-nutritious meals with fewer calories. But it depends on how you choose. The majority of the meals on these plans come in at between 500 and 800 calories, and all those we compared offered a nutritional breakdown for each recipe, except for Blue Apron, which lists only calories. There is a wide range in healthfulness, even within individual services, depending on the meal chosen. For example, with Plated, you could go for a not-so-healthy dish such as the Mac and Cheese with Gruyere, Peas and Pea Shoots, which comes in at 770 calories and 19 grams of saturated fat (95 percent of the daily recommended value) per serving, or
“I didn’t feel comfortable cooking fish, and now I cook fish!” DIANNE MURPHY, Blue Apron user, on the cooking skills she acquired using the meal-kit delivery service
a better-for-you Skillet Roasted Chicken with Caramelized Fennel and Potatoes at 540 calories and 3.5 grams of saturated fat. As a rule, vegetable-, seafoodand poultry-centric meals are healthier than those based on meat or cheese. Some services are more invested in making health a priority than others. HelloFresh, for example, has an in-house dietitian who reviews each meal, and although there are 800-calorie burgers on the menu, there’s also an appealing array of lighter options. Purple Carrot is a vegan service, and for the most calorie-conscious, Chef’d offers meals in partnership
Studio Body Logic Alexandria to host 20-minute apparatus circuits for Pilates Day on Saturday; $5 donation
with Weight Watchers. Whether especially healthfocused or not, a big benefit of these meal kits is that they can help you get a handle on portions. When Dianne Murphy, owner of the public relations company Dinamic Communications, opened her first Blue Apron box, she remembers thinking, “This is never going to be enough food.” But, she says, it is. “Now we are eating smaller portions and feeling satisfied.” Meal kits can also expand culinary horizons, which ultimately keeps healthy eating appealing and sustainable. “I didn’t feel comfortable cooking fish, and now I cook fish!” Murphy said. Now she, her husband and their three children are exposed to and enjoy a wider variety of vegetables; arugula is their new favorite. The step-by-step instructions included in the boxes can also up your cooking game, and better skills in the kitchen usually translate to healthier eating over the long term. STUDIES SHOW …
Bad news, lonelyhearts Researchers reported in the journal Heart last month that poor social relationships could actually hurt your heart. The study was a meta-analysis of 23 previous studies involving 181,000 people. This means the researchers pooled raw data and reanalyzed it. In total, the studies included 4,628 cases of cardiovascular disease and 3,002 stroke cases. The researchers found that being lonely or socially isolated seemed to be associated with a 29 percent increase in the risk of heart disease and with a 32 percent increase in the risk of stroke. Keep in mind, however, that each study used different criteria to determine whether a subject had poor social relationships, with one method dating back to 1965. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Um, we’re moving waaay too fast Q. I’m dating a guy who seems awesome except for his driving. Like, it seriously scares me. He is aggressive and drives super fast and has a totally different personality behind the wheel. I have brought it up only jokingly and he takes it in stride, and considers himself a good driver. I don’t know how deep to go because it is a new relationship. NERVOUS PASSENGER In general, a good dating relationship involves not being killed by your reckless-driver partner. It’s one thing when people don’t like each other’s driving style; it’s another when a person races around so aggressively as to seriously scare his passengers. Move beyond the jokes and get specific: “I’ve got to be honest; I’m uncomfortable
when you drive 80 on the Beltway” or “Wow — that was kind of scary. Can we tone it down?” Take this seriously. Not only could it be a worrisome side of his personality that might emerge in another settings, but it truly jeopardizes your safety — which is nothing to feel weird or guilty for speaking up about.
I’m betting he is well aware that he is not the “default” parent, and so he justifies what are viewed as treats because when he is in charge, it’s seen as a special event. He’s like the fun baby sitter instead of an equal extension of a parenting unit. Until you both view your parenting as joint and equal, any general rules will be seen as yours and yours alone. It sounds paradoxical, but what will help is for you to let go a little. He’s got to find his own footing, be alone with your daughter more often and call more of the shots, which will likely make him adhere more to the general framework you both decide on — as five straight days of Happy Meals, screen time and lost sleep for a 4-year-old beget something scarier than Jack Nicholson in “The Shining.” Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. entertainment BOOKS Comedian Michael Ian Black has a confession: The title of his forthcoming satire, “A Child’s First Book of Trump,” is “sort of deliberately misleading.” Yes, you can read this picture book with your kids, but it’s not really meant for them. Despite the simple rhymes and whimsical illustrations, the humor here is more John Oliver than Dr. Seuss. That said, the book “does have a Seussical bent to it,” says Black, who has written several books legitimately for children and starred in some shows you might
not want them to see (like “Wet Hot American Summer”). The book’s main character, American Trump, is vaguely Lorax-like, with his orange Humpty Dumpty-sized head topped by a brilliant whoosh of bright yellow hair. The rhyming text is also a kind of wicked homage to Seuss: “I have all the best words and all the best things!/ My water is bottled from all the best springs!” “My wine is the best, and so is my brain./ You wanna know why? Too bad! I’ll explain.” Black wrote the book quickly

— his first draft in a few hours, his second (and final) in a weekend. The book will be published July 5. The running joke is that Trump is a thing, “a beasty” you might encounter in the wild: “How would you approach it, depending on its behavior and how it looks?” Black asks. According to his book, with trepidation. But “should you stumble upon one in the wood,” what should you do? “Don’t respond to its brags, its taunts, or its jeers; / Ignoring a Trump is a Trump’s biggest fear.” NORA KRUG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

VCR to cable box: Welcome to the landfill
The sorting out of Prince’s estate begins
Online streaming service Hulu is looking into offering live-streaming content from cable channels as part of a service that could cost about $40 per month, according to The Wall Street Journal. Hulu is owned by Fox, Disney and NBCUniversal; the Journal said that Fox and Disney are close to sealing deals to offer their channels. That would give subscribers access to ABC, the Disney Channel and ESPN as well as Fox News and national and regional sports channels, the report said. The service could launch in 2017 and would also include a digital DVR service, the Journal said. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
A Minnesota judge on Monday confirmed the appointment of a special administrator to oversee the settlement of Prince’s estate. Carver County District Judge Kevin Eide formalized his appointment last week of Bremer Trust to handle matters involving the estate of Prince, who died last month at 57. Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, requested the appointment, saying the superstar musician had no known will. At Monday’s hearing, Eide asked the packed courtroom whether anyone knew of a will, and the courtroom was silent. The hearing didn’t address how long the estate may take to settle. (AP)
Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski will serve as correspondents for NBC’s coverage of the Rio de Janeiro Olympics. The network announced Monday that the NBC Sports figure skating analysts will explore Rio’s culture, sights, sounds and fashion in August during the games. The two former Olympians attracted attention for their rapport and fashion sense in an understudy role at the Sochi Games in 2014. NBC then made them its top figure skating broadcast team. Weir and Lipinski began preparing for their latest gig at Rio’s Carnival festival experts for the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. (AP)

The controversial columnist argued that Wilmore was out of line and that the N-word is vile and should never be used. Twitter exploded with reactions, with many accusing Morgan of being a troll. Many also pointed out that Morgan, as a white man, is out of line for critiquing and trying to explain black issues.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You can satisfy your own requirements and still give someone else exactly what he or she needs. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Don’t give yourself completely free rein, or your efforts may not result in much. You must control yourself and focus.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) A friend is eager to pit his or her skills against yours, even though it’s obvious you’re at the top of your game.
TODAY: Showers are likely in the morning, and it’s noticeably cooler compared with Monday. As the front that is responsible sags south, rain should gradually taper in the afternoon. There’s a reasonably good chance tonight is rain-free, but skies remain mostly cloudy. Lows dip to near 50 degrees.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You must be willing to acknowledge someone else’s accomplishments. You’re not the only one who’s being productive right now. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) The personal injury you fear is far more likely to occur because you’re giving it so much mental attention.
