Airports can foam runways to help disabled planes land. On Wednesday, workers foamed a grassy area at an airfield in Aarhus, Denmark, to help save a skydiver who got tangled up trying to jump and clung to the underside of his plane for an hour while the pilot burned fuel. When the plane landed, it dragged the parachutist some 200 yards, The Independent reported. Police said he walked away with only “a groin strain and graze.” (EXPRESS)
Every New Yorker knows that keeping a car in the city can be a hassle. But this? Alec Steinfeld said last week that his Volkswagen had been parked for a week on his block in Brooklyn. When he drove to work, smoke came out of the engine as he reached Manhattan. It seems that two rats had caught fire under the hood. But Steinfeld should have been tipped off earlier. “When I started driving initially,” he told WPIX-TV, “I smelled roadkill.” (EXPRESS)

Reviving memories with art THE DISTRICT Over the decades that Marie and Bill Fanning raised five children in Northern Virginia, they were regular visitors to the National Gallery of Art. They loved the Wyeth and the Copley paintings. But with so many children to run after, they rushed past many paintings without stopping. Now retired, they are engaging with their beloved museum in a different way. Marie, 74, was diagnosed five years ago with mild cognitive impairment, and on Monday she and Bill, 76, participated in a new program, “Just Us at the National Gallery of Art,” which leads people with memory loss and their caregivers through an intensive meditation on a few paintings in the collection. The biweekly pilot started in April and runs through July, after which the museum hopes to make it permanent. In one of the West Building’s galleries, memory loss patients and their caretakers — 11 in all — sat in wheelchairs and on folding stools in front of “En route pour

What’s the subject? Where are we?” The program was developed with the help of Carolyn HalpinHealy, a New York City educator

On Monday the theme was “On the water.” The visitors had various stages of memory loss, from a woman with no obvious symptoms to a man who barely lifted his head during part of the tour. To appeal to such a broad range, Bradford keeps her questions open and picks art that is open to wide interpretation. “Topics that have a lot of entry points allow for a lot of exploration,” she said. “We invite them to start looking and sharing their ideas, and that works for everybody.” For the Fannings, being at the National Gallery has struck an additional personal chord. Marie, who once a special education teacher, “was working with people with disabilities [and] she got somebody a job here in the mailroom, 20 years ago,” Bill Fanning said. “She’s raised five kids and 11 grandkids — this is a new phase in her life, in our life. …” His voice choked up. “This was something we should have done a lot of times,” he said, “but we were in too much of a hurry to stop.” TARA BAHRAMPOUR

Nooses at AU prompt calls for investigation

GOP group: Metro should be privatized SUSAN WALSH (AP)
THE DISTRICT The hanging of bananas from nooses with hateful messages at American University in D.C., apparently targeting the first black woman to serve as the student body president, prompted members of Congress on Thursday to call for federal civil rights investigations. At least five nooses with bananas were found hanging from trees and lampposts around campus Monday, Taylor Dumpson’s first full day as student president. The FBI said Thursday that it is assisting a hate crime investigation opened by campus police. The bananas included messages targeting Dumpson’s historically black Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, along with the words “Harambe bait,” referring to the gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo that was shot and killed after a child fell into its enclosure. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, a Texas Democrat, and other members of Congress who are Alpha Kappa Alpha alumni called on Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Attorney General Jeff Sessions to denounce and investigate the incident. They said President Donald Trump should speak out as well. “What happened at American

University is tragic. A young woman’s historic achievement has been clouded by hatred and bigotry,” said Rep. Alma Adams, a North Carolina Democrat. “This incident is just the latest in a string of atrocities sweeping our nation. It’s not a coincidence since President Trump’s election that we’ve experienced a wave of intolerance and divide.” A report by the Department of Education’s civil rights division found that complaints of racial harassment on college campuses had more than doubled between 2009 and 2016. Just this week, officials at the University of Maryland said a noose was found inside a fraternity house. That, too, is being investigated as a hate crime. Dumpson has said she was
disturbed by racist comments on a messaging app that were traced to the campus during her freshman year, and that she considered transferring. Flanked by members of Congress outside the Capitol on Thursday, she made her first extensive comments about this week’s case, saying she hopes it can be a “catalyst for change” that leads the university to a more unified response to acts of bias on campus. “At the end of the day, this isn’t just AU. This isn’t just about me. This is a broader issue that impacts everyone,” she said. “As a community, as a nation, we are never going to get anywhere if we do not talk about the uncomfortable truths that lie ahead. We are not in a post-racial society, unfortunately.” BEN NUCKOLS (AP)
The federal government should cut Metro’s costs by making it easier for the transit agency to privatize operations and to buy buses and other equipment from foreign suppliers, according to a new study by a conservative-leaning think tank. The American Action Forum also calls for a Government Accountability Office investigation of Metro’s workforce practices, including those affecting pay and discipline. Referring to last year’s revelation that Metro employees falsified track inspection reports, the forum said: “If politics or the work culture within [Metro] are rewarding unethical practices, which may be contributing to the system’s high cost, poor performance and lack of safety, the GAO is the best outfit to determine that.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Teenager arrested with police rifle in stolen car Police in Montgomery County say a high school junior who was arrested driving a stolen car also had a rifle that had been stolen from a police car. Police said an AR-15 rifle and shotgun were stolen from an unmarked Rockville police cruiser’s trunk on April 29. Police say Mario Granado Alvarado, 18, was arrested Monday near Albert Einstein High School in Kensington. They said a school resource officer discovered Alvarado was driving a stolen car and had the missing police rifle in the trunk. (AP)

nation+world City threatens residents with foreclosure over delinquent water bills
FLINT, MICH. Thousands of Flint residents have been warned that they could lose their homes if they don’t pay outstanding water bills — even as the city has just begun replacing lead-tainted pipes after a contamination crisis linked to a dozen deaths. Warning letters were mailed to 8,002 residents in April, according to the city, a few weeks after state officials ended a program that was paying the majority of their water bills. But many Flint residents still don’t trust their taps — lining up
for free bottled water or installing city-recommended filters after revelations in 2014 and 2015 that dangerous levels of lead had leached into the system while officials tried to cut costs. Flint resident Melissa Mays, an activist on the water issue, said the demand for payment and the risk of losing her home through tax liens shook her up. “I got scared, for probably the first time since this all started — this actually scared me,” Mays told the local NBC affiliate this week. More than $5.8 million in water and sewer charges need to be collected, according to the city. “This is difficult for residents, too,” city spokeswoman Kristin Moore said. “It’s a tough place

to be in, but we’re just trying to do the best we can.” The letters give residents with half a year or more of unpaid
bills a month to pay up or face possible foreclosure. Moore said residents will have until February to pay before enforcement begins. The water problem began in 2014, when a state-appointed manager switched Flint’s supply from a lake to the Flint River. More than a dozen state and local officials have since been charged with crimes after corrosion from the new water source let rust, iron and lead into the water. The city of 95,000 has since started paying Detroit for tap water. State officials said this year that lead in the water had fallen to safer levels. In March, a lawsuit forced the city to begin replacing 18,000 lead-tainted pipes. AVI SELK (THE WASHINGTON POST)

What if you could simulate the voice of President Trump — and even create a conversation between him and Barack Obama? Or listen to a vaguely robot-like voice of yourself, programmed into an app based on a sample of your speech? The technology will be ready soon, say researchers at the University of Montreal’s institute for computer-based learning algorithms. They are seeking investors for their product, Lyrebird, and hope to join Google in the fast-expanding business of mimicking human voices. Virtual assistants such as Alexa and Siri have driven voice technology into the mainstream. Now, the perfect vocal replication of anyone could be just a few years away. Experts in technology and ethics are gearing up for products that will do to voice what Photoshop did to photos — make reality very difficult to tell from a simulation. Lyrebird says it recognizes the dangers of users misrepresenting themselves, but it plans to begin selling what it calls the first technology to allow rapid copying of voices. Scientific American notes that Lyrebird and an Alphabet-owned project called WaveNet use neural network technology — code patterned after neurons in the brain — to simulate human speech on the fly. In contrast, Siri and Alexa use prerecorded files of one particular voice. AVI SELK

House GOP claims win Trump signs religious liberty executive order
ACA as a prime goal, the legislation would stop short of outright eliminating the 2010 health care law enacted by a Democratic Congress and the Obama administration. Nevertheless, it would make a significant dent in large portions of current law. In broad strokes, the bill represents an attempt to shift to a more conservative vision. It would move from the federal government to states power to set important health insurance rules. It would end the ACA’s subsidies for most people who buy health plans through marketplaces created under the law, creating, instead, new tax credits with clear winners and losers. And it would rescind several taxes that have helped pay for the law, including ones imposed on Americans with high incomes, health insurers, medical devices and tanning salons. ED O’KEEFE,
POLITICS Declaring he was giving churches their “voices back,” President Trump signed an executive order Thursday aimed at easing an IRS rule limiting political activity for religious organizations. As he marked the National Day of Prayer at the White House Rose Garden, Trump signed the order on religious freedom, which directs the Treasury Department to not take “adverse action” against churches or religious organizations for political speech. The rule has rarely been enforced, but opponents say it has a chilling effect on free speech. The 1954 regulation, known as the Johnson Amendment, bars electioneering and political endorsements from the pulpit in houses of worship. While Trump’s order limits the rule’s enforcement, any repeal would have to be done by Congress. Trump’s order also asks federal agencies to consider issuing new regulations that the White House says could help religious groups that object to paying for contraception under the Affordable Care Act. And it asks the attorney general to issue guidance on federal protections for religious liberty. The order did not match a more sweeping February draft that included provisions for faith-based ministries, schools and federal workers, leaving many conservatives dissatisfied.

debate that included few public hearings and the hasty revision of key sections of the bill during closed-door meetings. The effort was designed to secure votes from skeptical conservatives and moderates initially unwilling to support the legislation. With the recent changes to the legislation, several Republican lawmakers admitted Thursday that they had not read the bill. Republicans accused Democrats in the past of ramming their health care bill through without giving members a chance to absorb it — but they insisted that they did not do the same thing Thursday. They argued that their bill is only several hundred pages long, compared with the size of the Affordable Care Act, which ran several thousand pages. Republicans also disregarded the absence of a final cost estimate from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office on how much the bill would cost and
Major hurdles await The bill faces a steeper climb in the Senate. First, the parliamentarian — or rules-keeper — cannot review the legislation and determine the rules of debate until the CBO submits its official analysis, which could take several more weeks. Plus, several Republican senators said Thursday that they expect the Senate would effectively be crafting its own measure — appearing to distance themselves from the controversial House bill. Republicans hold a 52-to48 advantage over Democrats in the upper chamber, leaving GOP leaders with a narrower margin for error than in the House. (TWP)

POLITICS House Republicans narrowly passed a controversial bill to overhaul the nation’s health care system Thursday, claiming fulfillment of a major campaign promise but sending the measure to an uncertain fate in the closely divided Senate. Passage in the House by a vote of 217 to 213 capped weeks of fits and starts for the GOP and represented an enormous victory for President Trump, who repeatedly pledged on the campaign trail last year to repeal and replace Obamacare but has struggled to secure legislative wins early in his presidency. The vote was also a big win for House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who had been working on the legislation since January but had failed to unite his ideologically divided caucus. “This bill delivers on the promises that we have made to the American people,” Ryan said on the House floor before the vote. Several White House aides began Thursday morning by texting each other and reporters with two words: “game day.” Democrats, meanwhile, predicted the measure would be devastating for Americans’ health care coverage but also, on a political level, for Republicans who voted for it. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., noted that many Americans can’t name their member of Congress — but that Thursday’s vote is set to capture the nation’s ire. “You will glow in the dark on this one,” Pelosi warned. “So don’t walk the plank, especially unnecessarily.” The vote caps a haphazard

Officials said Trump chose Saudi Arabia as his first stop to show his commitment to improving U.S. relations with the Muslim world. ”We will begin to construct a new foundation of cooperation and support with our Muslim allies to combat extremism, terrorism and violence and to embrace a more just and hopeful future for young Muslims in their countries,” said Trump, who plans to meet with King Salman.
Trump, who met with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday, has sought to forge strong ties with Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu in hopes of facilitating peace. “Our task is not to dictate to others how to live but to build a coalition of friends and partners who share the goal of fighting terrorism and bringing safety, opportunity and stability to the warravaged Middle East,” Trump said.
Trump will meet with Pope Francis, who couldn’t be more different in his approach to world issues such as immigration and climate change. Francis has spoken of the need for bridges between nations, not the walls that Trump has championed. Francis has called for an end to the use of fossil fuels, while Trump has pledged to cancel payments to U.N. climate change programs and pull out of the Paris climate accord.

U.S. forces could remain in Iraq after ISIS fight
ROYAL RETIREMENT
Prince Philip set to cease public duties
IRAQ Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi is in talks with the Trump administration to keep American troops in Iraq after the fight against the Islamic State group in the country is concluded, according to a U.S. official and an official from the Iraqi government. The talks point to a consensus by both governments that, in contrast to the U.S. withdrawal in 2011, a longer-term presence of American troops in Iraq is needed to ensure that an insurgency does not bubble up again once the militants are driven out. “There is a general understanding on both sides that it would be in the long-term interests of each to have that continued presence. So as for agreement, yes, we both understand it would be mutually beneficial,” the U.S. official said. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. The talks involve U.S. Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis and Iraqi officials over “what the long-term U.S. presence would look like,” the American official said, adding that discussions were in early stages and “nothing has been finalized.” U.S. forces in Iraq would be stationed inside existing Iraqi

He said al-Abadi is looking to install a “modest” Iraqi military presence in Mosul after the fight against ISIS is concluded along with a small number of U.S. forces. The forces would help control security in the city and oversee the transition to a political administration of Mosul. The U.S. official said there were no discussions of creating independent American bases in Iraq, as that would require thousands more personnel. He said the troop levels would be “several thousand ... similar to what we have now, maybe a little more.” QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA
For decades, he has stood loyally at the side of Queen Elizabeth II and made thousands of solo appearances. He calls himself the world’s most experienced unveiler of plaques. Now, at age 95, Prince Philip says he is retiring from royal duties. The queen’s husband said Thursday he will carry out scheduled engagements for the next few months but won’t take on new ones in the fall. After the announcement, Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, was at a reception when a guest said he was sorry to hear he was standing down. “Well, I can’t stand up much longer,” the prince replied. Gin found to have too much punch
Canadian authorities have launched a nationwide recall of Bombay Sapphire gin because some bottles have almost double the alcohol content than what’s specified on the label, USA Today reports. A batch of the 1.14-liter bottles were apparently bottled before being properly diluted, leading to 77 percent alcohol content by volume, as opposed to the typical 40 percent. The company said up to 6,000 bottles are affected. (EXPRESS)

Russia, Iran, Turkey agree to ‘de-escalation zones’ Russia, Iran and Turkey agreed to establish “de-escalation zones” in Syria, signing on to a Russian plan under which President Bashar al-Assad’s air force would halt flights over designated areas across the war-torn country. Full details of the agreement, which will go into effect Saturday, were not made available. Some members of the Syrian opposition delegation shouted in protest as officials signed the deal. Debt saga heads to court Uncertainty is looming across Puerto Rico and the U.S. municipal bond market now that the U.S. territory has taken a step into court to restructure a portion of its $73 billion debt. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to appoint a federal district court judge to oversee the case in the coming days. The move to court is the largest effort ever made by a U.S. government to shield itself from creditors. (AP) POLITICS

PENGUINS AT CAPITALS | GAME 5: 7:15 P.M. SATURDAY, NBC
Not dead yet: Caps call for one last rally
NHL PLAYOFFS For 12 seasons, Alex Ovechkin has been the face of the Capitals, a living reflection of their repeated postseason failures. That hasn’t always been fair, but as Washington faces a 3-1 deficit against Pittsburgh in the second round of the playoffs, the spotlight is on him again to lead his team to its first conference final in 19 years. With expiring contracts this offseason closing the window on the most talented team to ever surround Ovechkin in Washington, this could also mark his last, best chance to alter the narrative that has defined his career. “Our top players didn’t play as well as they need to,” Capitals coach Barry Trotz said after a 3-2 loss in Game 4. “They need to … step up right now.”
Since Ovechkin took the stage to help announce skilled Swedish center Nicklas Backstrom as Washington’s first-round pick at the 2006 NHL draft, the two players have been linked. They made the playoffs for the first time together during Backstrom’s rookie year. Although they lost that first-round series in 2008, there seemed to be hope a Stanley Cup was in Washington’s future with those two as cornerstones of the franchise. But in eight postseason trips together, Ovechkin and Backstrom have never advanced past the second round despite finishing with the best regular-season record three times. Ovechkin is 31, Backstrom is 29 and both are weary from repeated postseason disappointments. Though Ovechkin has averaged nearly a point per game in the playoffs, he’s had to answer for the early exits more than anyone. He and Backstrom each have four points in four games this series.

Ovechkin says it’s time to reverse reputation of playoff misfortune
The Penguins are missing their top scorer, defenseman and goalie in Sidney Crosby, Kris Letang and Matt Murray, but the Capitals are still down 3-1 in their series. These numbers help to explain why. (TWP)
Alex Ovechkin sits on the bench during a Game 4 loss to the Penguins. The 31-year-old has never led the Capitals past the conference semifinals.
“I have to play much better.” CAPITALS CAPTAIN ALEX OVECHKIN,
after going down 3-1 to Pittsburgh with a 3-2 loss Wednesday night
In three years as general manager, Brian MacLellan has made a series of “all-in” moves to build around Ovechkin and Backstrom. After meeting with them in February, MacLellan traded for puck-moving defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk. Evgeny Kuznetsov, Andre Burakovsky, Dmitry Orlov and Nate Schmidt will all be due pay raises
in restricted free agency this summer, making it hard for the team to keep Karl Alzner, T.J. Oshie and Justin Williams with the salary cap expected to stay flat. A roster constructed to be as complete as possible has shown cracks this postseason. Washington has allowed the most goals of any team still in the playoffs. The Capitals’ bottom-six forwards haven’t scored in this series. With a promising campaign on the brink of ending prematurely once again, Trotz said he wanted to see more from his top players, and Ovechkin felt it was time for him to do more. “It’s the time for us,” Ovechkin said. ISABELLE
Even-strength rush shots (within four seconds of a turnover) allowed per 60 minutes in the playoffs, which indicates opposing breakaways. The Caps allowed 3.5 in the regular season.
0.909
The playoff save percentage for Braden Holtby, which is a postseason career-low and is .016 lower than his regularseason figure of 0.925.

Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby is skating again, but coach Mike Sullivan provided no update Thursday on when his star will be ready to return from the concussion he suffered on a cross-check from Washington’s Matt Niskanen. Parker out rest of playoffs for Spurs with quad injury
Scherzer strikes out 11; Harper leaves with injury
The Spurs announced Thursday that veteran point guard Tony Parker has a ruptured quadriceps tendon in his left leg. The injury will likely require surgery to repair, so San Antonio will have to go through the rest of the postseason without its floor leader. The injury occurred Wednesday during a 121-96 win in the Western Conference semifinals against the Rockets. The series is tied 1-1 with the Spurs playing in Houston on Friday night (9:30, ESPN). (AP)
Max Scherzer posted a season-high 11 strikeouts to lead the Nationals to a 4-2 win over the visiting Diamondbacks on Thursday. Scherzer (4-2) allowed one run and two hits — including a home run to Jake Lamb — in seven innings. He also was 2-for-3 at the plate, driving in Washington’s first run. Bryce Harper, who went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run, left the game after hurting his groin. He is day to day, manager Dusty Baker said. (AP)
Each of the last five Derby winners ran the last three-eighths of its final prep in under 38 seconds. Gormley and Battle of Midway ran that stretch in 39.74 and 40.37 seconds, respectively. In a third-place Florida Derby finish, Gunnevera ran the final three-eighths in 36.59 seconds. He has four straight top-three
finishes and is running his best as a 3-year-old: His 97 Beyer speed figure while winning the Fountain of Youth was a career high. Classic Empire, meanwhile, had his best Beyer as a 2-year-old (102) in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Since 1998, all but one Derby winner has run faster at 3 than at 2. NEIL GREENBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST)
MANUEL BALCE CENETA (AP)
ANALYSIS Since the Road to the Kentucky Derby points system was established in 2013, four straight favorites have won. That might be enough reason to pick this year’s favorite, Arkansas Derby winner Classic Empire, to win Saturday at Churchill Downs. Then again, you have to go back 122 years to find the last time five straight favorites won (1891-95). But to pick a winner besides Classic Empire, we have to eliminate some pretenders first. Only two of the last 48 Derby winners — Fusaichi Pegasus (2000) and Monarchos (2001) — went winless as 2-year-olds. And Always Dreaming, one of the second favorites at 5-1, didn’t win until age 3. It’s been 84 years since a horse entered the Derby without a win and crossed the finish line first. With no wins in 10 starts, long shot Sonneteer is unlikely to break that streak. The last horse to run in the Blue Grass Stakes — a few weeks before the Derby — and win the Run

MLS On April 22 at New England, Sebastien Le Toux scored his first goal for D.C. United with a one-time chip. Last weekend in Atlanta, he had a bit more time to drag the ball with three touches before fooling another stranded goalkeeper. The Frenchman has flashed timely runs and one-on-one composure in MLS since 2009, tallying 59 goals in 252 career matches. When Le Toux signed a one-year deal to come to D.C. this offseason, less proven forwards Patrick Mullins and Jose Ortiz were ahead of him on the depth chart at striker. But with two goals in two starts up front, Le Toux, 33, is making his case to keep the job. “I showed [coach Ben Olsen] that he can count on me if he needs me,” Le Toux said. In its last two road games — a 2-2 draw with the Revolution and a 3-1 win over Atlanta United FC — D.C. (3-3-2) increased its season goal total from four to nine. On Saturday night at RFK Stadium (6, NewsChannel 8), United will try to continue its unbeaten streak against a Montreal side with one win. D.C. will need to relieve the pressure on its back line and goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who leads the league with 50 shots faced and 36 saves. In Atlanta, D.C. handled just 25.8 percent of possession. But with Le Toux’s counter-attack goal in the 55th minute, it opened up a two-goal lead. DILLON MULLAN (FOR EXPRESS)

o you have friends in town? Are you craving some breakfast pizza or a freshly-squeezed mimosa? Or do you just want a reason to get out of bed next Saturday morning? Look no further, below are some of the most budget friendly and eclectic venues to visit and indulge in DC’s greatest tradition, brunch.
1 Medium Rare Medium Rare is not your cheapest brunch, but it offers an extremely affordable all-inclusive deal. $25.00 at this venue gets you bottomless beverages (coffees and/or mimosas, bloodies, screwdrivers, whatever your poison), bread, an appetizer (yogurt parfait, salad, or fruit), and one of the five main course options, nearly all of which include steak! This place is typically bustling at brunch time and although reservations are not required, customers line up pretty early to get in. MR has locations in Cleveland Park and Capitol Hill/Barracks Row. 3 Nellie’s Nellie’s takes brunch to the next level with Drag Brunch. Though tickets aren’t super cheap, they cost under $40.00. This ticket includes the all-you-can eat buffet, the show, and your first mimosa, so it’s worth the investment. When it’s not drag brunch time, Nellie’s is another affordable place for a pit stop. 900 U St NW, Washington, DC 20001 Photo Credit: Nellie’s Facebook Page
4 El Chucho – Cocina Superior Want spicy brunch with something alcoholic for under $12.00? Columbia Heights’ El Chucho is a winner. Prices are pretty reasonable here and the food won’t disappoint. 6 Georgia Brown’s This restaurant serves VERY high quality southern foods and this is another option where one can easily maximize their dollar because GB’s brunch is a buffet. It’s also a bit of a D.C. classic, so it’s a great place to introduce newcomers to brunch in the nation’s capital. This list is a fun starting point to your brunching adventures and is meant to include variety in cuisines as well as lower cost options, but don’t limit yourself to this list – the District is teeming with brunch options all varying in location and price. The Guardians have arrived to charm your pants off.
ALSO OPENING
‘Angkor Awakens’
Not the same old tune The ‘Guardians’ sequel turns it up a notch for an even nuttier adventure
FILM REVIEW With a title slyly evoking the music-compilation aesthetic embodied by its 1970s soundtrack, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” manages to re-create the formula of self-aware humor and unapologetic action that made the original 2014 film such a pleasing package of ear and eye candy. The new film is more expansive, more beautiful, funnier, nuttier and — the most difficult trick for any comic book movie to pull off — more touching than the first. The team of five quarrelsome superheroes returns intact, or mostly intact, with tree-man Groot having been reduced, at the
end of the last film, to the saplingsize Baby Groot, still voiced by Vin Diesel. The film kicks off like a party, with an opening sequence featuring Groot shaking his adorably twiggy booty to Electric Light Orchestra’s “Mr. Blue Sky” on a boombox as Chris Pratt’s Peter “Star-Lord” Quill, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, Dave Bautista’s Drax and Bradley Cooper’s CGI raccoon Rocket do battle with an alien starbeast. That’s not the only dazzling visual in this sharply choreographed and ravishingly designed comedic space opera. One scene, with Gamora’s green body silhouetted against the red landscape of the planet Berhert, is so painterly pretty, a la “Avatar’s” moon of Pandora, that my eyes hurt — in a good way. It is on Berhert that our heroes
‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ (PG-13, 136 min.) DIRECTOR: James Gunn
STARS: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper IN A NUTSHELL: The “Guardians” team is back to travel throughout the cosmos, all while unraveling the mystery of Star-Lord’s parentage.
crash-land. There, Peter meets his long-lost father, the appropriately named Ego (Kurt Russell), leading to what appears to be a tender family reunion — and striking a tone that will characterize the rest of the film. Family — the kind that is defined by blood, and the kind for whom you will spill blood, even without sharing DNA — is the theme of
this tale, which manages to evoke genuine, deep feelings, along with belly laughs. Director James Gunn, whose film includes more world-building than the original movie — and the introduction of a charming new character, the buglike empath Mantis (Pom Klementieff) — delivers backstory, story and the promise of stories to come with the breezy, effortless skill of a master raconteur. Falling somewhere between the sardonicism of the “Iron Man” trilogy and the self-aware meta-movie high jinks of the R-rated yuk-fest “Deadpool,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” is a toe-tapping, eye-popping indication that summer is here, and that it might not be so bad after all. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
CASTING
The ultimate mom movie is in the works
Diane Keaton, left, Jane Fonda and Candice Bergen have signed on to star in “Book Club,” a comedy about four lifelong friends in their 60s who read “Fifty Shades of Grey” in their book club and “have their lives changed forever,” according to Deadline. The movie, which is currently in pre-production, is set in California. The project marks the directorial debut of producer Bill Holderman. (EXPRESS)

DISNEY-MARVEL
Not rated, 90 min.
Decades after a devastating post-World War II genocide, filmmaker Robert H. Lieberman takes an intimate, deeply humane look at the uncharted future of a country emerging from trauma in “Angkor Awakens: A Portrait of Cambodia.” Though laden with grim archival footage of mass graves and Cambodian-style shadow puppetry, it is the Cambodian voices that give the documentary a glimmer of light. JANE HORWITZ (TWP)
‘The Dinner’ R, 120 min.
When Stan (Richard Gere), a congressman running for governor, and his wife (Rebecca Hall) invite his brother Paul (Steve Coogan) and his wife (Laura Linney) out to dinner, a conversation unravels about their teenage sons, who have committed a terrible crime. “The Dinner” has plenty of dramatic potential, but it all adds up to an unsavory mess of a screenplay. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
“Wonder Woman” opens in June, and you already know if you’re going or not.
Ad subtraction: Wonder if this is sexism? It’s not. Woman” is the first DC movie with a sole female lead, it’s easy to assume this is another example of Hollywood’s sexist ways. Now, I call sexism out when I see it, and I don’t see it here. The truth is that, in the case of this movie, advertising can only do so much. “Wonder Woman” is the first movie in recent history that is both a superhero movie and a movie with a female lead. These are two divisive subsets: Many moviegoers either go to superhero movies or they don’t. Many others either go to “chick flicks” or they don’t. Their minds are made up long before the commercials and action figures and Subway tie-ins and, I don’t know, wiper fluid come around. The chances of a commercial convincing someone who categorically doesn’t like superhero movies to see “Wonder Woman” are pretty thin. The same goes for convincing someone who doesn’t like movies centered around women. (Which … if you’re that person, go ahead and stay home. More popcorn for us.) So, no, I don’t think the perceived lack of advertising here is a product of sexism; it’s a matter of financial sense.
In ‘Buster,’ heartbreak is taken literally
WARNER BROS.
When I was a little girl, I would strap on my Wonder Woman Underoos, punch the bottoms out of Dixie cups to make bracelets, and go spin around outside until I was dizzy enough to believe that my scrawny, blonde self had morphed into the buxom, brunette Lynda Carter. (True story: When I was lucky enough to interview Carter, I told her this story and she cried. Then I called my mom, cried and thanked her for being too cheap to buy the accessories pack.) Here’s the point of that compelling tale: No matter what, I am going to see “Wonder Woman” when it opens June 2. Nothing short of my own actual death could stop me, and even that is debatable. Just haul my corpse to the theater, “Weekend at Bernie’s”-style. Warner Bros. has gotten pushback from some fans who claim the studio doesn’t seem to be giving “Wonder Woman” the same marketing juggernaut that it has given other DC superhero movies, particularly last year’s “Suicide Squad” and this November’s “Justice League.” Since “Wonder
I don’t see sexism here. The truth is that, in the case of ‘Wonder Woman,’ advertising can only do so much. People like me have been ready to buy our tickets since the day the movie was announced. That’s fine if Warner Bros. executives choose to save money and sit on some of the cash that normally would have gone to promoting
“Wonder Woman”-branded razors. Better yet, instead of sitting on that cash, here’s another idea: Give director Patty Jenkins a bonus and funnel the rest to developing young female filmmakers. “Wonder Woman” is about to drop a ton of money into the lap of some very powerful movie execs, and they could use it to help fight the institutional sexism that pervades Hollywood. After all, not all heroes wear bracelets. Some carry checkbooks. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby.

‘Cursed Child’ apparating to Broadway in 2018
The stage play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” will open at the Lyric Theater on Broadway on April 22, 2018, producers announced Thursday. The production is presented in two parts, intended to be seen on the same day or on consecutive evenings. The play — written by Jack Thorne, based on a story by him, J.K. Rowling and John Tiffany — recently won nine Olivier Awards in London, including best new play. (AP)

FILM REVIEW Rami Malek looks like a man in a perpetual state of panic. You could compare his wide, expressive eyes to those of a deer in headlights — if the rest of his face weren’t so tightly controlled. In “Buster’s Mal Heart,” a bizarre drama from writer-director Sarah Adina Smith, Malek’s nonverbal acting serves a very personal and touching story. “Buster” has three timelines, all featuring Malek, and Smith only slowly reveals the links between them. We first see him as Jonah, a husband and father who works in a remote mountain hotel. He yearns to live off the land and away from civilization, a goal he achieves in the second timeline. Sporting a scraggly beard, he now lives as a hermit, breaking into empty vacation homes during the off-season (locals nicknamed him “Buster”). We’re also introduced to Jonah on a boat in the middle of the ocean, alone and begging God for a speedy death. In lesser hands, “Buster’s Mal Heart” could easily have been obtuse — the sort of film that values weirdness over storytelling. However, Smith builds emotion in a linear fashion, even as the film jumps around. The result is a puzzle of sorts, one meant to answer the question of how a devoted family man could come to live in such total isolation. Or even, what might happen if a man’s core separated in two. ‘The Dark Tower’
‘The Big Sick’
EXPECTED RELEASE: Aug. 4
EXPECTED RELEASE: June 23 (limited), July 14 (wide)
SUMMARY: Proving once again that being a kid in any world created by Stephen King is dangerous, “The Dark Tower” features a boy (Nicholas Hamilton) who sees into another world. There, a “gunslinger” (Idris Elba) fights evil — which here takes the form of Matthew McConaughey — and attempts to save both his world and ours. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: Cultures clash in this indie rom-com, co-written by and starring “Silicon Valley’s” Kumail Nanjiani (and based on his life). He plays a Pakistanborn comic who falls for a white woman (Zoe Kazan) despite being expected to marry another Pakistani. The laughs really start rolling, though, when the woman he loves faces a serious medical issue. K.P.K.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles.
