A rare $2 bill led to confusion at a school in Houston when an eighth-grader in line for lunch was told her money was fake and police were summoned. A police officer questioned the girl before taking the $2 bill to a bank, which verified the currency, which features Thomas Jefferson on the front. Nobody was charged and investigations continue into counterfeit money at schools. The child missed lunch that day. (AP)

THE DISTRICT They had cut down the masts, severed the underwater anchoring lines and adjusted the ballast to make the ship ride bow high. The towing chain had been passed through the “bull nose” up front. The skeleton crew was onboard. And the moon had provided a very high tide, with plenty of extra water under the keel. At 7:38 a.m. Saturday, three powder-blue tugboats backed the former USS Barry away from Pier 2 at the Navy Yard and into the Anacostia River for its final voyage. “There she goes,” said a man in the crowd that lined the boardwalk along the river to bid farewell to the old destroyer, which had served as a popular museum ship since 1983 and had been a fixture in the neighborhood. “Bye, Barry,” said another. Under a blue sky with broken clouds, the tugs got the ship into midstream and turned it to face downriver toward the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge. The river was placid as the

The longtime staple of the Navy Yard is towed away on its last voyage

The former USS Barry, once a Navy destroyer and a museum ship at the Navy Yard for more than 30 years, is towed Saturday down the Potomac.

Barry began its 50-hour journey to be mothballed in Philadelphia. The surface was disturbed only by feeding fish, a few ducks and the churning from the tugs’ propellers. The 418-foot-long vessel, which has ties that stretch from Pearl Harbor to the Vietnam War, was powerless during the operation. Its engines were silenced long ago, its rudder locked in place, the Navy said. Its final voyage was termed a “dead ship” tow.

“This ship, the way it’s configured, the smell, the feel of it, the new ships don’t have that. It’s a different era. I was sad to see it go.” CMDR. JOSHUA COLLAMER, of the Naval Reserve, who works at the Pentagon and was in charge of the Barry from 2003 to 2005

“It’s basically, at this point, a long hunk of metal that they’re … towing through the water,” said Lt. Luke J. Adams, the officer in charge of port operations at the Navy Yard. But it cut a sleek profile with its sharp, angled bow and its bold hull number — 933 — as it was towed. A D.C. fireboat lofted a salute with its water cannons as the Barry passed. Nearby vessels sounded their horns. And as the ship passed Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, where the Anacostia meets the Potomac River, the strains of “Anchors Aweigh” drifted across the water from loudspeakers on shore. “Very emotional,” said Anne Seymour, who lived in the Navy Yard neighborhood in Southeast Washington and carried two American flags as she watched the ship leave. “The Barry is a landmark institution in our ’hood,” she said, as she stood on a nearby pier. “We love him. I’ve been here almost 26 years. … I’ve seen the neighborhood go through a lot of changes. The one thing that did not change was the USS Barry.” “Always here, always reliable,” she said. “I’m very, very sad.” MICHAEL E. RUANE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘What needs to be done’ After decades of issues, Metro announces plans for a series of closures and single-tracking

expressline

Safety steps ordered after Metro fire

The longest of Metro’s planned shutdowns will see the Red Line’s Rhode Island Avenue and BrooklandCUA stations closed for 24 days beginning Oct. 9.

Another shutdown, for 16 days beginning Aug. 20, will start at the Eastern Market station, on the Blue, Orange and Silver lines, and reach to the Orange Line’s Minnesota Avenue station as well as the Benning Road station on the Blue and Silver lines. “I totally understand the inconvenience argument,” said Wiedefeld, now in his sixth month as Metro’s chief executive. But he said the work is desperately needed: “We cannot keep trying to Band-Aid over these issues. This is tough medicine. But we have to take it. And the sooner we take it, the better we’re all going to be.” T he overh au l , dubbed “SafeTrack,” includes 15 work projects, each called a “safety surge.” Starting in June, the surges will be conducted one after another along different stretches of the 118-mile system. Metro intends to replace, repair or refurbish almost every type of infrastructure. The plan includes a moratorium on extended evening hours,

as when the subway stays open after its normal closing time to accommodate late-night crowds leaving sporting events. And starting June 3, the system will shut down at midnight instead of 3 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, limiting transportation options for bar patrons and others. Wiedefeld said that money for the work is already in Metro’s long-term capital-improvement budget and that the funds will

be moved from future years to the current year to pay for the maintenance blitz. Much of the maintenance neglect, under previous generations of Metro leadership, resulted from public pressure to keep the subway operating at full capacity for economic and convenience reasons, and from a push for Metro expansion by the transit agency’s directors and political leaders in the Washington area. President Barack Obama on Friday cited Metro as an example of the nation’s crumbling infrastructure and called on Republicans to back his proposals to boost spending on public works initiatives. “It is just one more example of the underinvestments that have been made,” Obama said. “The D.C. Metro has historically been a great strength of this region, but over time we have underinvested in maintenance and repairs.” PAUL DUGGAN, LORI ARATANI AND ROBERT McCARTNEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION After decades of maintenance neglect, Metro next month will begin a huge subway rebuilding effort that will inconvenience nearly everyone who uses the system, with stretches of some rail lines closed for days, a reduction in late-night weekend service and a slowdown of trains throughout the year-long project, officials said Friday. The transit disruptions will have ripple effects across the region as local governments and employers will be asked to make adjustments — whether it be changing HOV lane restrictions to ease the anticipated increase in road traffic or allowing employees to work from home or modify their schedules. “It’s what needs to be done,” General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld declared in an interview before outlining his aggressive plan at a news conference. “It’s going to impact people’s lives; it’s going to impact businesses, all of that,” he said of the infrastructure overhaul, which is expected to cause more commuting headaches for longer periods than any previous track work in the subway’s 40-year history. With the system addled by long-deferred maintenance — caught in a sometimes-calamitous spiral of breakdowns and other failures — a day of reckoning has arrived, Wiedefeld said. The longest of five planned shutdowns will start Oct. 9 and last 24 days, involving a Red Line stretch from the NoMa-Gallaudet station to the Fort Totten station. The stations in between — Rhode Island Avenue and BrooklandCUA — will be closed.

TRANSPORTATION Describing a dramatic list of missteps by Metro during a response to a station fire, the Federal Transit Administration issued a series of directives to the transit agency while threatening to shut down the system. The FTA, which took over direct safety oversight of Metro in October, said in a directive Friday that the agency must take “urgent action” to ensure passenger safety, including daily testing for hot spots, stepped-up measures against water leakage in tunnels and reductions of electrical power use. On Thursday, after a third rail insulator exploded, a Metro operations supervisor “conducted only a cursory inspection before ordering the damaged track back in service,” the FTA said. It said the Rail Operations Control Center then denied permission to maintenance personnel when they asked to take the track out of service for inspection. The control center did not give Metro investigators clearance for the inspections until several hours later, the FTA said, adding that “trains continued to operate across this potentially dangerous track without interruption.” After a second fire and smoke incident occurred at the same station later in the day, the control center then closed that portion of the Blue, Orange and Silver lines. Liberty U. board member resigns over Trump clash

The Baltimore Board of Elections has completed its final vote count in the city’s Democratic primary. Catherine Pugh, a state senator and the owner of a public relations firm, maintained her victory as the city’s democratic nominee for mayor with a total of 48,665 votes, while her closest opponent, former mayor Sheila Dixon, received 46,219 votes in total. Dixon said last week that she did not concede the election. The results will be certified today. The board completed its count on Friday. There were roughly 7,000 provisional ballots and 3,800 absentee ballots to be tallied. Of that number, roughly 2,800 ballots were disqualified. (AP)

A Liberty University board member who criticized the school president’s endorsement of Donald Trump has resigned. The News & Advance reports that Mark DeMoss resigned after several fellow board members took issue with his position on Jerry Falwell Jr.’s endorsement of the Republican presidential hopeful. DeMoss is a former spokesman for Liberty’s founder, the late Jerry Falwell Sr. He criticized Jerry Falwell Jr.’s endorsement of Trump in an interview with The Washington Post a day before the Super Tuesday primaries. He said that “fundamental lack of trust” would make it difficult for him to remain on the board. (AP)

Police: No regret from Md. shooting suspect Two-day attack left three dead and three wounded in suburbs ROCKVILLE Police say they’ve seen no signs of remorse from a federal police officer accused of a two-day shooting spree in a string of suburban parking lots in Maryland that left three people dead and three wounded. Eulalio Tordil, 62, of Adelphi is scheduled to make an initial court appearance today in Rockville on charges including first-degree murder. Police said the shootings began Thursday, when Tordil fatally shot his estranged wife — Gladys Tordil, a chemistry teacher — in a high school parking lot. A bystander was wounded. The shootings continued Friday at two different mall parking lots. At the first, one man was killed and his friend was wounded while coming to the aid of a woman, who also was wounded. At the second, a woman was shot and killed in her car. Police said Saturday that the shootings a day earlier were likely botched carjackings. They also identified the victims who died in the Friday shootings: Malcom Winffel, 45, of Boyds,

was shot and killed at the first crime scene Friday. Claudina Molina, 65, of Silver Spring, died at the final crime scene. At a news conference Saturday night, Montgomery County Assistant Police Chief Russ Hamill said Winffel and his friend, who was not identified, were coming to the carjacking victim’s aid when they were shot. “Those two men acted selflessly and heroically, most likely saving her life,” Hamill said. Hamill said Tordil spoke to investigators a little about the shootings. “I would not describe him as being remorseful,” Hamill said. Hamill said a search of

Tordil’s car uncovered a .40-caliber Glock handgun that was used in Friday’s shootings. Hamill said police believe it also was used in Thursday’s shooting of Gladys Tordil but that more testing is needed to confirm. Tordil, a federal security officer employed by the Federal Protective Service, was put on administrative duties in March after a protective order was issued against him when his wife said he had threatened to harm her if she left him. Tordil subjected their children to “intense-military-like discipline,” such as pushups and detention in a dark closet, according to the order. MATTHEW BARAKAT (AP)

Ryan said last week that he is not ready to support Trump — even though he is the presumptive GOP nominee, to which Trump responded, “I am not ready to support Speaker Ryan’s agenda.” Palin said Ryan was making a crucial mistake. “His political career is over but for a miracle, because he has so disrespected the will of the people ... and for him to already come out and say who he will not support was not a wise decision of his,” Palin said. Businessman Paul Nehlen is challenging Ryan in the Aug. 9 primary in Wisconsin. Nehlen has criticized Ryan’s refusal to back Trump and has issued a statement saying, “If Mr. Trump

Trump said Ryan had telephoned him to offer congratulations after Trump won the New York primary April 19, and that they had a friendly exchange. A Ryan spokesman said that call never happened. Trump and Ryan are to meet in Washington on Thursday. Ryan is on tap to be chairman of the GOP convention in Cleveland in July and would be considered by most politicians as a crucial ally. Trump said his message to Ryan will be that the voters have spoken: “I’m going to say, ‘Look, this is what the people want.’ ”

POLITICS After a bitter race, the Labour Party’s Sadiq Khan has won London’s mayoral race and made history as the first Muslim elected to lead a major Western capital. The result is likely to resonate far beyond London, challenging the rise of anti-Islam rhetoric in the West and giving another powerful voice to Britain’s large Pakistani community just when the country is facing its own identity crisis. Khan, whose parents came to England from Pakistan, will run a city of 8.6 million. He hailed his win as the triumph of “hope over fear and unity over division.” Sunday, he attended a London ceremony to honor the millions of Jews slain in the Holocaust. During his campaign, opponents tried to portray him as an apologist for Islamic extremism and to highlight cases of alleged anti-Semitism within his party. At a time when Islam is seen by many in the West as politically toxic, Khan embraced it to winning effect in the campaign. He memorably tweeted to his main rival, the Conservative’s Party’s Zac Goldsmith: “Hey @ZacGoldsmith. There’s no need to keep pointing at me & shouting ‘he’s a Muslim.’ I put it on my own leaflets.” He told The Washington Post on the campaign trail: “I want to be the British Muslim that defeats the extremists, defeats the radicals. I’ve got a plan of how we can keep London safe.” (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Afghan officials hanged six Taliban prisoners Sunday, a resumption of executions in the war that makes good on President Ashraf Ghani’s recent promise to deal harshly with insurgents, now that hopes for peace negotiations have evaporated. The inmates were hanged inside Pul-i-Charki prison — a detention facility on the outskirts of Kabul. Among those hanged were two Taliban members involved in the assassinations of two senior government officials in recent years, officials said. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Kim: We won’t strike first with nuclear weapons North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said Sunday that his country will not use nuclear weapons unless its sovereignty is invaded by forces using such weapons. Kim, speaking on the third day of a milestone congress of North Korea’s ruling party, also said he is ready to improve ties with “hostile” nations, and called for more talks with rival South Korea to reduce misunderstanding and distrust. He also urged the U.S. to stay away from inter-Korean issues. Kim also announced a five-year plan starting this year to develop the North’s economy. It was first time North Korea announced a five-year plan — and detailed it publicly — since the 1980s. (AP)

‘Trump of the East’ could be president of Philippines As the U.S. adjusts to the rise of Donald Trump, the Philippines, a former colony and longtime ally, is observing the rise of its own controversial presidential front-runner. Rodrigo Duterte — the “Trump of the East” — is a motorcycle-riding, rape-joke-making mayor who has publicly backed death squads. And he’s the favorite outsider heading into the Philippines’ presidential vote today, commanding a solid but not certain lead over challengers with strong links to the country’s political elite. With China pressing its claims in the South China Sea and the U.S. military increasing its presence on Philippine soil, the vote will have global implications, which is why Duterte has people talking. Students who join Harvard’s maleonly social clubs won’t be able to be sports captains or leaders of other campus groups starting in fall 2017. The policy, announced Friday by Harvard’s first female president, Drew Faust, also applies to singlegender groups such as fraternities and sororities. Under the new policy, students who join single-gender groups will also be prohibited from getting the dean’s endorsement for scholarships. The rule will apply to students entering in fall 2017. (AP)

nation+world ALBERTA, CANADA Officials in Canada said Sunday that amid cooler temperatures, they have reached a turning point in fighting an enormous wildfire that has devastated the oil sands town of Fort McMurray in Alberta. Meanwhile, a massive evacuation of residents displaced by the blaze came to an end. With cooler temperatures in the next three or four days, firefighters should be able to put out hot spots. “We can … really get a handle on this fire and really get a death grip on it,” said Chad Morrison of Alberta Wildfire.

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said the fire grew much more slowly than feared and on Sunday it was 397,831 acres — quite a bit smaller than had been expected Saturday, when officials expected it to double in size. The images of Fort McMurray are of devastation — scorched homes and virtually whole neighborhoods burned to the ground. More than 80,000 people have left since the fire began May 1. Gas has been turned off, the power grid is damaged, and water is not drinkable. Officials said there is no timeline for residents to return.

Canada turns a corner on giant fire

A wildfire burns Saturday near Fort McMurray. Cooler temperatures are expected to aid firefighters.

The fire and mass evacuation have forced a quarter or more of Canada’s oil output offline. The Alberta oil sands have the third-largest reserves of oil in the world after Saudi Arabia and Venezuela. After last Tuesday’s mandatory evacuation of Fort McMurray, officials Friday and Saturday evacuated 25,000 residents from work camps north of the city. No deaths or injuries have been reported from the fire itself, although two people died in a traffic accident during the evacuation. RACHEL LA CORTE AND ROB GILLIES (AP)

REVERSE TYPE II DIABETES You’re Invited to a Free Gourmet Meal and Diabetic Event

Here is what Drs. Chaney’s patients are saying... “When I started my A1C was 12.5 - it was terrifying. The program to me was life changing. When I thought I was eating right they let me know that what I was eating was good for some people but it wasn’t good for me. I thank God for Dr. Steph and Dr. Tom Chaney because they turned my life around.”

“I am reporting to you three years after joining the program. I am 50 pounds lighter, I am happier, healthier and my A1C is no longer 13 but 5.4.” -Glennis G.

-Milton A.

“I can not tell you how great I feel. My energy is way up and my sleep is so much better. I am thrilled with Dr. Tom and Dr. Steph for helping me regain my personal health and reverse my diabetes.”

-Barry B.

“When I started this program my A1C was 8.9. My current A1C is 5.7. I was taking Metformin and two types of blood pressure medications. My blood sugars before the program were running in the 180’s. Now my blood sugars are running in the 110’s. After 2 months in the program my doctors stopped my Metformin that was phenomenal! I’ve also lost 25 pounds.”

“My first visit was very pleasent. My second visit is what changed my life. I have been a patient for 6 months. My A1C has gone from 6.6 to 5.7. I started out 70 pounds heavier. But coming to Living Health wasn’t about weight loss it was about type 2 diabetes. As you can see from my numbers that my type 2 diabetes has been reversed which is the intent of the program.”

“I came to this program because my A1C had drastically gone up to 9.2 and I was 215 pounds. Six months into the program my A1C dropped from 9.2 to 6.2 and my weight has dropped from 215 pounds to 195.”

“All I can say is it really works. I’ve been in the program for 5 months and I feel like a whole new woman. I’ve lost 40 pounds, I’m not on any diabetic medication anymore - that stopped pretty quick! My A1C went from 7.8 to 6.”

-Marissa M. My A1C was 8. Two months after that it was 6.4. As of a couple of days ago it is 5.9. I am ecstatic about that. I can only hope...I know, not hope, I know...that my blood sugars have come down, so the weight will come off. The blood pressure, I’ll be off of that medication. I have no doubt that I’ll be off of my diabetes medication and it’s all thanks to the Drs. Chaney and their facilities and I’m so happy”

THREE POINTERS

King of the postseason?

CAPITALS AT PENGUINS | GAME 6: 8 P.M. TUESDAY, NBCSN

Resilient Caps put pressure on Penguins NHL PLAYOFFS For once the pressure isn’t on the Capitals to close out a playoff series. Although they may be feeling a different kind of pressure after they cut their second-round deficit to 3-2 with Saturday’s win over the Penguins. “The mindset is, ‘I don’t want to go home, I don’t want our season to end,’ ” Justin Williams said after the Capitals beat the Penguins 3-1 to avoid elimination in Game 5. “We stopped it once and now we have to do it twice more.” Williams is no stranger to these moments, having played a key role on the 2014 Stanley Cupchampion Los Angeles Kings who erased a 3-0 deficit in their firstround series against the Sharks. Williams scored the insurance goal in Washington’s win Saturday and has provided the

Capitals with a calming presence throughout the postseason. “We were down 3-1 and now we’re down 3-2, so you slowly try to push the needle toward them and put a little bit of pressure on them, and we need more of that in Game 6,” he said. As the Capitals head to Pittsburgh for Game 6 on Tuesday, they do so with a confidence and swagger that has perhaps been lacking on this team in past postseasons. Even ahead of Game 5, the prospect of being eliminated was hardly a cause for concern. “Coming to the rink, I said to our coaches, ‘We’re winning tonight, there’s no question,’ ” coach Barry Trotz said. “You could tell with our team. You could get a sense of that and they responded. I never had any doubt.” With their season on the line, the Capitals’ best players led the way in Game 5 with Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie each recording a goal and an assist and Braden Holtby making 30 saves. “We were pretty confident

coming in,” Holtby said. “We know we have to be ourselves to play our best and that means feeling comfortable. “I don’t think any of us have even thought about going home yet. We’re prepared to keep playing hockey for a long time and that means we’re going to have to fight through adversity in some places and we’re ready for it.” Recently the Capitals have struggled to close teams out, posting a 5-15 record in potential series-clinching games since 2008. A year ago, the Capitals squandered a 3-1 lead in the second round against the Rangers. “We were on the other end last year, and we felt pain,” Trotz said.

“We’re just trying to change our mindset — looking forward is the way to do it. That’s the only thing we can change. “We can’t change the past or the situation right now, but we can change our situation moving forward and that’s the mindset we want to have.” Defenseman Karl Alzner is also looking forward to changing the narrative as the series, and perhaps the pressure, shifts to Pittsburgh. “No one wants to be finished playing right now,” Alzner said. “And I think you’re going to see probably the best hockey that this team’s played this year.” BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS)

This postseason, James could pass Karl Malone, Shaquille O’Neal and Scottie Pippen to reach fourth in playoff minutes. Entering Sunday’s games, he had logged 7,834 — 1,462 fewer than Tim Duncan.

2 Total points

Jordan leads the scoring list with 5,987 playoff points. James is currently fourth at 5,208, but he’s just 42 away from Shaq for fourth place.

1 Turnovers

With as many playoff games as James has played, he’s bound to get some bad records, too. He has 655 turnovers; only Magic Johnson has more with 696.

Cleveland completes the sweep

Kevin Love, left, scored 27 points, LeBron James hit a huge shot with 39.2 seconds left, and the Cavaliers finished their second straight playoff sweep, beating the host Hawks on Sunday to advance to the Eastern Conference finals. Dennis Schroder led Atlanta with 21 points, but the speedy guard couldn’t convert down the stretch. Cleveland will face the winner of the Raptors-Heat series in the next round. CUBS 4, NATIONALS 3 The Cubs walked Washington star Bryce Harper a recordtying six times, then beat the Nationals 4-3 when Javier Baez homered in the 13th inning Sunday for a four-game sweep. The Cubs won their seventh in a row and improved the best record in the majors to 24-6. Washington (19-12), which had been leading the NL East, lost its fourth straight. Manager Joe Maddon and the Cubs showed no interest in pitching to Harper. The reigning NL MVP walked 13 times in the series. Harper matched the major league record for walks in a game, last done by Jeff Bagwell in 1999. Harper was hit by a pitch the other time he came to the plate. The Elias Sports Bureau said Harper was the first player in history to reach base seven times without an official at-bat. Things became almost comical when Harper strolled to the batter’s box. The Ravens’ sixth-round pick began his professional football journey this week at rookie minicamp catching passes out of the slot and also returning kicks. “It’s different; it’s something you’ve got to get used to,” said Reynolds, whose only reception at Navy came in a 44-28 Military Bowl win against Pittsburgh this past season. Reynolds made several nifty grabs during one-on-one press coverage work with Ravens coach John Harbaugh watching. “Keenan’s doing a heck of job,” Harbaugh said. “He’s a natural athlete. He’s got natural hands, which is a big plus. … He’s a guy who’s still got a lot of work to do, but he has the ability to pull it off.” While pursuing his NFL dream, Reynolds must also honor his five-year commitment to active duty in the Navy. GRADE POINT

Calli Moore’s studies in studio art at AU have helped her connect with professional artists and critics.

State of the arts degree What is an MFA good for? These creative students say the pricey classes are worth it. DEGREES Alyssa Wilmoth Keegan had reached a roadblock. After graduating with a theater degree and working as an actor briefly in Virginia, Keegan moved to New York to try to make it in the business. Instead, she ended up with five jobs. “I was doing all of these things to pay rent to live in New York City,” she says. “I was actually passing up auditions because I had to work. I woke up one day and thought, ‘I think I need to restart.’ ” So she went back to school — a decision she didn’t make lightly. With master’s degrees averaging tens of thousands of dollars, prospective arts students have to choose whether or not a graduate program is worth the time and financial expense. And it’s not like a master of fine arts degree promises future riches: On PayScale’s recent ranking of the highest-paying

graduate degrees, not a single arts degree made it into the top 200. Still, the number of MFA students has been increasing every year since 1991, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Plenty of D.C.-area students have found reason to love the MFA, and the salary potential isn’t necessarily one of them. “Being an artist is a very difficult life, not one that will have a big payoff,” Keegan says. “Go to [get your undergraduate degree] for sure — you definitely need some training. Understand the lifestyle. If you love it, then go and get more education.” Keegan was accepted into the classical acting MFA program at George Washington University. It’s an accelerated, one-year program designed specifically for students who have had some professional experience. Plenty of upper-level arts courses break from the traditional two-year, straight-out-of

This allows artists to continue working in their fields while also getting the chance to incorporate lessons

from the class. Another benefit of seeking a higher degree in the arts is the chance to build a portfolio and make professional connections. As director of the six-month intensive Institute of Documentary Filmmaking at GW, Nina Gilden Seavey guides a group of students to become a production team that creates a documentary short film from beginning to end. “You can’t do it alone. You have to be part of a community of people who will read proposals, recommend you for jobs and talk about production,” Seavey says. “Our filmmakers work together for years.” Higher-level arts classes can also help get your work recognized by professionals. Undergrads will now get underpaid If the last few years are any indication, the average Class of 2016 graduate will leave school with five-figure debt. That albatross likely will force graduates to accept jobs without long-term prospects for career or wage growth, according to a new study from the Economic Policy Institute. While there is only a tenth of a percentage point difference between the unemployment rate for college grads these days and the rate before the recession — 5.6 percent now compared with 5.5 percent in 2007 — the number of degree holders in low-paying jobs is much higher. Nearly 13 percent of young college graduates are currently underemployed, compared to 9.6 percent nine years ago. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

also regularly featured. Student Calli Moore says AU has a strong visiting artist program. “We had a huge art critic come last year. I saw him in New York a few weeks later and he remembered me and my work,” she says. “You’re having these people in your studios where you would never have that happen otherwise.” Moore’s program also gave her the opportunity to study at an artist residency in Berlin, where she met and was able to share her work with artists from around the world. While earning a higher degree in the arts can offer access to resources and support, some artists find alternatives to the more traditional programs. Sheldon Scott, a performance artist and writer in D.C., started his career as a social worker, but felt like something was missing. After Scott took some acting classes, his teacher encouraged him to speak at an open-mic night. From there he knew he wanted to perform. He continued to study, did some on-camera work and even took some intensive classes in LA. “I never went back to school,” Scott says. “Just training and workshops for what I could fit into my financial life.” Scott says D.C. has a supportive community of artists that has allowed him to build connections. He started working in performance art full-time

about a year ago and his practice, which includes a mixture of live performance, sculptures and photography, has been featured in the Hirshhorn Museum, Arlington Arts Center and the National Portrait Gallery. Scott says his friends have recommended some MFA programs, but he’s unsure if he wants to risk taking time off from his practice. “There’s tremendous value to formal education. At the same time, I’m not sure,” Scott says. “I’m almost always in production mode. My biggest reservation is [about] being able to keep up that kind of momentum. … It’s a very precious time now.” Graduate-level arts programs may not work for everyone and there are many factors to consider before making that leap. For Keegan, the MFA program helped to refocus her acting career. Since graduating, she’s starred in Tennessee Williams’ “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” at the Round House Theatre in Bethesda. Her MFA classes, she says, challenged her need to control everything around her and instead pushed her to reflect on her own insecurities, to better relate to her characters. “The way that I approach my work changed the most by understanding who I was,” she says. “What I learned was, more than the positive aspects of myself, I really needed to embrace the things that are wrong with me. That was the real breakthrough with my work.” ERIN CONNOLLY (FOR EXPRESS)

She makes the NGA look picture-perfect POSITION: Curatorial assistant at

the National Gallery of Art SAL ARY: G S - 9 federa l pay: $53,435-$69,460

What she does Kerry Rose spends her days tending to the artwork of the masters — Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder and Jackson Pollock, to name a few — on display at the National Gallery of Art, where she is a curatorial assistant for the permanent collection of modern art.

Rose is part of the team that guides a piece of art through its entire life at the gallery. She assists in a painting or sculpture’s acquisition; works with the registrar’s office to make sure it arrives and is installed safely; assists with creating the label that will identify the artwork in the gallery and on its website; and helps coordinate when it’s time to loan the piece to another institution. The department of modern art oversees more than 2,500 works of art.

Additionally, Rose coordinates with photographers; writes exhibition catalog entries on the NGA’s works; researches the provenance, or history of ownership, of pieces in the collection; and makes research files on new art objects and artists. Occasionally, she leads gallery talks for exhibitions or specific works of art in the permanent collection. One of Rose’s favorite parts of the job is getting up close and CONTINUED ON PAGE 22

personal with “Multiverse,” the 200-foot-long light installation that visitors pass through between the east and west buildings of the gallery. Rose works with the art handlers and conservators on the day-to-day maintenance of the approximately 41,000 computer-programmed LED nodes that run through channels along the walkway. “Sometimes, when you go into a museum, you don’t think about who takes care of these things,” she says.

How she got the job Although she came from a family of artists, Rose decided to go against the grain while in college by majoring in math. “I

wanted to do something practical” she says. While a freshman at Johns Hopkins University, Rose took a modern art class as an elective, and realized that was what she was meant to do. “Cubism was my thing instead of calculus,” says Rose, who ended up receiving a bachelor’s degree in art history in 2008, with a minor in Italian literature. She went on to earn a master’s degree in art history in 2010 from Tufts University in Boston, where she focused on modern art, and to hold internships at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art, and a fellowship at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. Rose and her husband, Chris Dorbian, 30, moved to D.C. in

Kerry Rose is part of the team that acquires modern art for the NGA.

Are you one of those people who could spend hours in an art museum? Good, because that kind of one-on-one time with each piece is crucial for Rose to confidently explain the works when she leads tours of the gallery. It also helps if you value making art accessible to the public, especially for a job at the National Gallery of Art, which is funded by a federal endowment established by financier and art collector Andrew W. Mellon, and is free to the public.

ahead Being “super organized” and computer literate are both a plus, as Rose’s job involves navigating databases and using imaging software in the Adobe suite. “It’s a large institution, so a collaborative spirit and a ‘cando’ attitude can go a long way,” she says.

How you can get this job A strong background in art history is a must, Rose says, and employers will usually be looking for candidates with graduate degrees. Locally, American University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland and George Mason University offer graduate programs in art history, while Georgetown University offers a master’s in museum studies.

Rose recommends finding professors whose areas of expertise match your own research interests. The best thing an aspiring curatorial assistant can do, though, is to gain experience through internships and fellowships at museums and galleries. “The more experience, the better,” Rose says. But take note: The internships and fellowships will be unpaid. “I’m really happy there,” Rose says of her job, noting that it is an “exciting time” for the department of modern art since the east building, which houses most of the modern art for the permanent collection, has been undergoing a renovation since 2013, and is expected to fully reopen this fall. student loans have been a drag on the housing market relied on faulty data. She says the study combined college-educated people without debt and those without college degrees, and then compared their homeownership rates to those of debt-ridden grads. “The dividing line between the haves and have-nots is not student debt, it’s a college education,” Dynarski said. Research from the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System shows that people without college degrees are more likely to own a home in their 20s while their counterparts are in school. But by their mid-30s, college

New research says debt doesn’t keep grads from buying homes STUDENT LOANS A few years ago, economists warned that student loans were keeping graduates from buying homes, putting a damper on the economic recovery. Yet a new look at data used to support that claim tells a different story. In a report published by the Brookings Institution last week, University of Michigan economics professor Susan Dynarski said the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s widely used findings that

Still renting? Don’t blame the loan. graduates’ homeownership rates are 14 percent higher than people with only a high school diploma. To be sure, a college graduate with $30,000 in student debt could have a tough time buying a home a few years out of school. But once she finishes paying off her loans around her 30s, her chances of buying a home are about the same as a graduate without debt, Dynarski said, because of income disparities. College graduates earn nearly twice as much a week as people with just a high school diploma, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Still, having student debt could make it difficult to save for a

down payment on a house, especially in parts of the country where homes are inexpensive and the earnings premium for having a college degree is low, said Ralph McLaughlin, chief economist at Trulia, a real estate website. But in pricey cities, having a college degree could make it easier to save for a home because graduates enjoy higher earnings, he said. “In the long run, households with a college degree, even if they have debt, are going to be better off than if they did not have that college degree,” McLaughlin said. DIA AND THINK

FILM It’s not generally news when a studio releases a new film. But last month, Indigenous Media quietly released a film, “Sickhouse,” somewhere you probably have never thought to look for one: Snapchat. Though it is getting a seminormal release — June 1 on Vimeo — it’s another example of a studio trying something new in an increasingly crowded market. Andrea Russett, an actress in the film, called the movie a “live Snapchat horror film.” As she explains in a YouTube video, it was uploaded to Snapchat in real time over a span of five days. It follows a group of friends who enter the woods and discover something evil. The fairly conventional plot revolves around social media. In that way, it takes the “found footage” style of horror movie, in which a movie is presented as “found” video recordings (or in this case, Snaps), created in 1999 by “The Blair Witch Project,” to the next level. Given the nature of Snapchat, viewers likely missed much of the movie. It didn’t help that Indigenous Media, a “next generation studio focused on producing

original content for emerging and traditional platforms,” barely promoted it. “We all have missed some parts of the movie,” Russett said. “Everything that was on Snapchat and more will be able to be seen on the feature version.” Changes in the funding and distribution of films have been rocking Hollywood for some time, as filmmakers and television showrunners increasingly find cheaper and more innovative ways to fund and release their projects. Perhaps the most surprising form of disruption appeared at the Sundance Film Festival last year, in the form of “Tangerine.” The movie’s subject is progressive enough to have made headlines: It’s essentially a buddy film that follows two transgender prostitutes as they try to figure out if the pimp boyfriend of Sin-Dee, one of the prostitutes, cheated on her. Director Sean Baker shot it entirely on an iPhone 5s. It was purchased by Magnolia, Indiewire reported. Other examples abound — for example, Spike TV crowdsourced a pilot TV script with an online competition. Amazon Studios creates “test movies” and asks users to suggest which should be made into feature films. The company previously allowed users to vote on television pilots, and it promised to

Comedian Louis CK recently fully funded “Horace and Pete,” his new television show, in the hopes of later finding a buyer. Normally, a network orders a certain number of episodes before they’re made. Several television shows have begun as Web series — which

can cost nothing at all, if an auteur uses YouTube or the like for distribution — only to be later picked up and funded by different networks. Among these is the Comedy Central show “Broad City.” Despite all this, the movie business is still doing well. In almost every one of the past 20 years, the amount each year’s highest-grossing film pulled in increased over the previous year. Such numbers suggest that the old models for creating, marketing and distributing films are still working. Until they aren’t, it’s likely the large studios won’t change the status quo. The smaller studios and independent filmmakers, however, may just continue leaving surprises on our smartphones.

TRAVEL CHANNEL

Host Curt Menefee accosts air travelers in “Hello Goodbye.”

Air kisses: Love lifts off (or crashes) on ‘Hello Goodbye’ “Hello Goodbye,” a reality series filmed in airports, promises “memorable moments” (11 p.m., Mondays, Travel Channel, premieres tonight). I was skeptical, because my memorable airport moments are: taking off shoes; emptying pockets for the security scan, typically forgetting to remove a wad of Kleenex, which results in a frisk; inhaling Cinnabon fumes; and pondering the existential question: Why am I always in boarding group four and never group one? Yet “Hello Goodbye,” from Ellen DeGeneres’ A Very Good Production, reveals that

airports are so much more than soul-killing conveyor belts. Affable host Curt Menefee, of “Fox NFL Sunday,” asks folks what they’re doing there — and discovers that airports are love nests! Two self-professed “geeks” reunite. “Are you guys a couple?” Menefee awkwardly asks. The man says he and the woman will be “hanging out.” Menefee says: “I sense it’s on.” A lady in suburban housewife garb says she’s come to “kidnap” her husband, who’s returning from a business trip, and take him to an airport hotel room full of “extra things” for mature adults. Two lovers say farewell — a Texas guy and a Latvian lady

$182M

whose visa is expiring. They hug it out. Seems their affair is over. Then there’s an onscreen note: He ends up flying to Latvia to propose! Many people are anticipating a first encounter with a true love they met online. Sometimes it works out. Then there’s David, whose wife died of cancer in 2012. He waits, roses in hand, to meet his “perfect” match, arriving from Ghana. All the people from the flight get off. There is no lady from Ghana. Rubbing salt in David’s wounded heart, Menefee inquires, “You didn’t hear from her at all?” Poor sad David says, “Life goes on,” and leaves, still holding the roses. So not only is this show full of deep emotion (and innumerable hugs), but it helps air travelers put things in perspective. I’ll never complain again about being in an inferior boarding group. “Some people felt that I did not spend enough time writing about the difficulties women face when they have an unsupportive partner or no partner at all. They were right.” SHERYL SANDBERG, Facebook COO, in a

post on the platform acknowledging that her 2013 manifesto “Lean In” failed to adequately address the challenges single mothers face. In her post two days before Mother’s Day, Sandberg shared what the loss of her husband, SurveyMonkey CEO Dave Goldberg, a year ago has taught her about motherhood and work.

“In America today, the only thing more terrifying than foreigners is … math.” CATHERINE RAMPELL, at washingtonpost.com, on

Guido Menzio, a University of Pennsylvania economist who was escorted off of an American Airlines regional jet on Thursday night. Menzio’s seatmate reported to the flight crew that he was writing (in Rampell’s words) “cryptic notes, scrawled in a script she didn’t recognize” and that he posed a potential terror threat. After showing the authorities what were actually math equations, Menzio was reboarded. The incident delayed the scheduled departure of the Syracuse, N.Y.-bound flight by more than two hours.

“How do you police who can and can’t drink? If a woman looks pregnant, what do you do? Make her pee in a cup?”

@LEXIALEX on the controversy surrounding a photo taken in April of 16 black female cadets raising their fists in uniform. The United States Military Academy is investigating the cadets after a former drill sergeant at the academy blogged that the gesture, seen by some as supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, was potentially a violation of a Defense Department directive against expressing “partisan political activity.”

LILLIE, WARRIOR QUEEN replies to a commenter with an opposing view on a Jezebel article that reports that New York City’s Human Rights Commission will release new guidelines that prohibit the banning or refusal of service to pregnant women. The new guidelines state that judgements and stereotypes “cannot be used as pretext for unlawful discriminatory decisions.”

TODAY: The sunshiny weather is short-lived as a warm front turns stationary just south of the area, and that should keep us grayer and slightly cooler.
