Local Teens: ‘Sure Beats Pulling School’s Fire Alarm’ Turns out those scratch-and-sniff cards the energy company uses to teach customers to recognize the artificial smell added to natural gas work pretty well. Several boxes of the Energy West cards were recently discarded in Great Falls, Mont. When the garbage truck picked them up and compressed the load, it sent a wave of odor behind it as it drove, prompting false alarms and evacuations. The company apologized. (AP) SMOOTH CRIMINALS

Nation Ohio may seek death penalty for man held in abduction case Cleveland An Ohio prosecutor said Thursday he may seek the death penalty against Ariel Castro as investigators alleged that he impregnated one of his captives at least five times and then starved her and punched her in the belly until she miscarried. In court Thursday, authorities laid out more of their case against Castro. Cuyahoga County prosecutor Timothy McGinty said aggravated murder charges punishable
by death could be filed related to pregnancies terminated by force. Castro, 52, was being held on $8 million bail under a suicide watch in jail. He is charged with rape and kidnapping for allegedly abducting three women and holding them captive in his home for a decade. A police report said Castro threatened, starved and raped the women. It also said that Amanda Berr y, who was 16 when she vanished in 2002, told officers that she was forced to give birth in a plastic kiddie pool in the house so it would be easier to clean up. Michelle Knight, now 32, said her five pregnancies ended after Castro

starved her for at least two weeks and “repeatedly punched her in the stomach until she miscarried,” the report said. She also said Castro forced her to help deliver Berry’s
baby under threat of death if the baby died. Knight said that when the newborn stopped breathing, she revived the child through mouthto-mouth resuscitation. McGinty said Castro would be charged for every single act of sexual violence, assault and other crimes, suggesting the charges could number in the hundreds, if not thousands. During the arraignment, Castro tried to hide his face and did not speak or enter a plea. Castro’s two brothers, who were arrested but later cleared of involvement in the kidnapping case, appeared in court on unrelated charges and were released. THOMAS J. SHEERAN (AP)

A pivotal vote Thursday in the Minnesota House positioned that state to become the 12th in the country to allow gay marriages and the first in the Midwest to pass such a law out of its legislature. The 75-59 vote was seen as the critical step for the measure, which would allow same-sex weddings beginning Aug. 1. The FBI did not initially share with Boston police the warnings from Russia’s security service in 2011 about one suspect in last month’s marathon bombings, despite the work of four city police representatives on a federal terrorism task force, Boston’s police commissioner told Congress on Thursday. Yet Commissioner Ed Davis acknowledged that police might not have uncovered or disrupted the plot even if they had fully investigated the family of Tamerlan Tsarnaev based on those warnings. The FBI, after a cursory investigation, closed its assessment on Tsarnaev, who died in a police shootout after the bombings. Boston police learned about the Russian warn-

silence on the issue, according to Afghan analysts. They said Karzai is concerned that Pakistan is using the Taliban to give it greater leverage and that he wants to find out if Afghans, tired of 12 years of war, will support that size of a U.S. military footprint. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Thursday that the U.S. “does not seek permanent military bases in Afghanistan.” The U.S. military presence in Afghanistan after 2014 would be “only at the request of the Afghan government,” Carney said. Carney wouldn’t say whether the U.S. was perhaps seeking a tem-

Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who has irked Washington with his frequent criticism of American military operations in his country, said Thursday that his government is now ready to let the U.S. have nine bases across Afghanistan after most foreign troops withdraw in 2014. A border spat with Pakistan and a desire to test public opinion led Karzai to break months of public

An American defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the negotiations with the media, said earlier that he had not heard the number nine mentioned previously. But Karzai said that’s how many bases the Americans had requested. “We are giving the bases, nine bases they want from Afghanistan
Attacks Mar Pakistan Before Election Islamabad An especially violent spate of killings, kidnappings and bombings marred the run-up to Pakistan’s nationwide election, capped Thursday by the abduction of the son of a former prime minister as he was rallying supporters on the last day of campaigning before the historic vote. Saturday’s election marks the first time in Pakistan’s military coup-riddled history that a civilian government has finished its term and will hand over power to another. But the significance of the occasion has been overshadowed by the relentless violence targeting mostly liberal, secular parties. More than 125 people have been killed by a series of bombings and shootings that can mostly be traced to Taliban militants who have vowed to disrupt a democratic process they view as unIslamic. In return, Afghanistan wants a U.S. commitment to boost Afghan security, strengthen its armed forces and provide long-term economic development assistance. A fire at a sweater manufacturer killed eight people — including a senior police officer, a Bangladeshi politician and a top clothing industry official — barely two weeks after the collapse of a building housing other garment factories where the death toll approached 1,000 on Thursday. Unlike the collapse at the Rana Plaza building, which was blamed on shoddy construction and disregard for safety regulations, the Tung Hai Sweater factory appeared to have conformed to building codes. A top fire official said the deaths in Wednesday night’s fire were caused by panic and bad luck. The fire engulfed the lower floors of the 11-story factory. Aha! A Brownout? Metro isn’t known for its consistency. Riders can never be sure whether an escalator will be working, or how long they’ll have to wait for a train, or what the temperature will be inside the train when it arrives. There’s one thing, however, that riders have always been able to count on: Metro brown. The hue, as iconic as that Helvetica M logo, is what welcomes us on station signs, guides us through fare gates and whooshes beside us every time a train pulls up. It’s also in danger of disappearing as Metro considers a massive makeover: swapping the 1970s aesthetic for a more modern look. Within a week of announcing the proposed $10 million renovation of the Bethesda station, Metro’s

manager of architecture had heard enough complaints about the design that he promised to tone down elements of the sweeping plan. Glass and stainless steel will not be replacing concrete and bronze. But, according to a Capital Business article on the matter earlier this week, brown is likely still a goner. And riders I’ve talked to say that would be just fine with them. “If you’re looking for [a Metro

station] when you’re lost, you want a bright color so your eyes can find it,” Lynette from Virginia told me. “Now, you look around, and where is it?” She’d prefer “anything but brown.” Richard Berry, 54, agreed: “Brown’s kind of dark, and I’ve got a vision impairment. So something brighter would help me out.” A few folks said color is the last thing on their minds when they ride Metro. (“There are plenty of other things to worry about,” said 28-yearold Jessica from Pentagon City.) But no one really seemed to stick up for the historic color choice. For an instant, I thought I’d found the one guy who really adores the brown when Jonathan Williams said, “It makes your day.” But then the 24-year-old took a breath and finished his thought: “It makes your day a little more dreary.” (He blames the brown for putting him to sleep every time he rides the system.) “We need red, white and blue — something to wake you up,” added Williams, who wasn’t the only person to suggest a flag-inspired color palette. (Patrick Britton, 21, would also like to add stars.) The closest I found to a brown promoter was 68-year-old Joe Weidlick. “It’s OK,” he said. “It’s not my favorite color.” Brown is no one’s favorite color. But the drab tone has made sense at Metro. It recedes into the background, allowing the rainbow of lines to stand out. It masks dirt. And although some would call it “dated,” I find it charmingly retro. It’s hard to imagine Metro any other way.
Four stations will be closed: Vienna, Dunn Loring, West Falls Church and East Falls Church. Free shuttle buses will replace Orange Line trains between the Vienna and Ballston stations.
Blue and Yellow line trains will share a track between Braddock Road and Pentagon City. Yellow Line trains will operate between Huntington and Mt Vernon Square only.

Metro Police Accused of Assault Suits allege officers struck 2 teenagers, fabricated charges
Meanwhile …
Civil rights lawyers filed two lawsuits Wednesday alleging that Metro Transit Police off icers assaulted two teenagers in separate incidents in D.C. and fabricated charges to justify arresting them. The suits, filed by the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of the students’ parents, allege that the officers used excessive force in confronting the teenagers and then tried to cover up the misconduct. The General Services Administration mandated that the National Aquarium vacate its space in the Department of Commerce building, where it has been located since 1932, by March to accommodate renovations. Officials said that the September closing date would give them the necessary time to transition staff and specimens to other aquariums. “We are committed to maintaining a presence in the capital,”
said Tamika Langley Tremaglio, the board chairwoman of the National Aquarium in Washington, in a news release. However, she didn’t provide detail about any future plans for another D.C. location. “We value our D.C. venue’s rich history as the nation’s first public aquarium,” Tremaglio added, noting that a public aquarium has existed in the District since the late 1800s. In 2003, the separate aquariums in Baltimore and Washington joined together as one “National Aquarium.” R ACHEL SADON (E XPRESS)

been throwing him inside more. At 20 years old, Harper’s already become one of the most feared hitters in baseball. Harper’s seeing more breaking balls, something he struggled with early in his young career. But against Detroit on Wednesday, the left-handed hitter received a first-pitch curveball during his fifth-inning plate appearance and took it to deep right-center field for his 10th home run of the year. Manager Davey Johnson believes Harper is exhibiting more patience at the plate, which has contributed to the hot start. It’s not that Harper’s more patient in pitch selection, though. It’s that he’s more mindful of balls entering his specific hitting zone.
Beware of Bryce Pitchers are taking notice of Bryce Harper. It’s hard not to, as the Nationals outfielder leads Washington in every major hitting category. He has 10 home runs, 21 RBIs and is the only player on the team with a batting average over .300 (.302). Harper has been carrying one of the worst offenses in baseball. The Nats entered Thursday ranked 27th in runs scored (116) and 28th in batting average (.232), and opposing teams are

“He is an aggressive hitter, and he is looking to swing the bat,” Johnson said. “They’re not going to give him a whole lot of stuff down the middle. He learned from that last year. Sometimes, if he doesn’t get a hit the day before, he’ll be a little more overly aggressive. But he knows that.” Though Johnson sees Harper as a more patient hitter this year, first baseman Adam LaRoche hasn’t seen much of a difference. “If he can get the bat on it, he’s swinging,” LaRoche said. “He’s one of those guys that can hit pitches off the zone, off the plate and up above the strike zone. He’s so aggressive and has a knack for hitting so many pitcher’s pitches. I don’t think we’ll see that change.” Harper took the MLB by storm in 2012 and has furthered his success in 2013, even when Washington’s offense was slumping in April. Harper said his approach is the same, even though it’s obvious he’ll be pitched around. Chalk it up to a phenom getting better with experience. “I’m just trying to square balls up and do things the right way and have good [at-bats],” Harper said. “I don’t know if it’s changed from last year or not. I’m just trying to have good [atbats].” JASON BUT T (FOR E XPRESS)

Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has just one goal and one assist in the first four games against the Rangers in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Caps Missing the First Line Ovechkin, Johansson and Backstrom have been held in check Stanley Cup Playoffs While Alex Ovechkin averaged a goal per game over the final 23 games of the regular season, his linemates — Nicklas Backstrom and Marcus Johansson — weren’t simply passengers. From the time they were put together March 17 through the end of the regular season, the Capitals’ top trio scored 31 goals and added 48 assists. Yet since scoring two of the three goals and adding one assist in Washington’s series-opening 3-1 victory over the Rangers on May 2, Ovechkin, Backstrom and Johansson have been neutralized, combining for just one goal and one assist in the following three games of the series, which is tied at 2-2 entering
7:30 P.M. | CSN Friday GAME 5
Game 5 on Friday night. “Of course we want to score goals and help the team,” Johansson said Thursday. “There’s no doubt about that. I think we’re creating chances and we’re getting our chances to score, but we just can’t seem to put the puck in the net. Sometimes it’s like that, and I think if we keep playing the way we are — maybe a little better — we can score a lot of goals, I think.” The reasons for their struggles are threefold. First, in the past two games at Madison Square Garden, New York had the last line change, which allowed Rangers coach John Tortorella to match up his
top defensive pairing of Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi as well as shut down forwards Ryan Callahan and Derek Stepan against the Capitals’ top line. Second, as McDonagh told reporters after Wednesday’s game, the Rangers have slowed the pace down when Ovechkin, Backstrom and Johansson are on the ice, forcing them to dump the puck into the zone instead of entering on the rush, when they are at their most dangerous. Lastly, Ovechkin said Thursday that he, Backstrom and Johansson are being too “cute” and too tentative with the puck as they attempt to evade New York’s shot blockers. In games 3 and 4, they had more blocked shot attempts (15) than shots on goal (13). “I think we’re waiting too long,” Ovechkin said. “If we have our chance to shoot the puck, we have to shoot it. Don’t wait one second.”

Since the start of the series, Capitals coach Adam Oates has continuously preached patience. He said that every line “can do things better” and “make better decisions,” but that he is confident his top line will get things together. “That is the way [the Rangers] play,” Oates said. “It’s the way they’ve played for a few years and everybody knows it and you have to be patient. That’s it. There’s no solution. You’ve got to keep shooting. You’ve got to obviously try and find lanes and hit different spots. It’s going to happen.” ADAM VINGAN (FOR E XPRESS)

D.C. United Ben Olsen is starting to feel the pressure, and life isn’t about to get any easier for the D.C. United coach. Just days after acknowledging he’s on the hot seat, Olsen will look to lead his troops into the home of the MLS team with the best record, as United faces FC Dallas on short rest on Saturday. Both teams had midweek matches, but United was humiliated 4-0 at home by the Houston Dynamo for a sixthconsecutive loss. “We have to make some changes,” Olsen said after Wednesday’s loss. “I still don’t get how it takes a coach to throw things and yell at [players] to now play with aggression and with the right spirit for 20 minutes of that second half. It’s mind-boggling to me. I don’t get it. If that’s what it takes, to get [players] to play desperate and with high concentration, some guys are in trouble with just being professional athletes. Chris Pontius is said to be ready for the weekend after missing two games with a groin injury. Considering what DeLeon and Pontius meant to the club’s success last season, combining for 18 goals and eight assists, their presence is a must heading into FC Dallas Stadium, where the hosts boast a 6-1-3 record and a league-best 21 points. Olsen, who signed a contract extension through the 2014 season in January, is well aware of where he stands with United. “I don’t worry about my job because I understand coaches get fired,” Olsen said. “That’s completely out of my control. Like a lot of Washingtonians, Lucy and Ethel anxiously await the chance to mingle with friends at their daily 7 p.m. happy hour. The only difference is that their happy hour takes place in an apartment building’s doggie lounge with their fellow furry friends. “Our dogs love to go down there,” says Patricia Carlson, 66, of her 2-year-old twin Shih Tzus. “It’s like they’re wearing doggie watches” whenever it nears the hour when seven or eight pets and their owners meet up at Archstone Wisconsin Place (4440 Willard Ave., Chevy Chase, Md.; 866-915-6998, Equityapartments.com). Carlson and her husband, Richard, 72, a former U.S. ambassador, moved into the building in 2009. The Carlsons, the parents of Fox News correspondent Tucker Carlson, joined other dog-loving residents to lobby for a space for their pets to socialize. And thus the doggie lounge was opened last year — with a washing station and hair dryer provided by the management, and leather furniture, a lamp and a rug from the Carlsons. Today, the building has about 60 dogs. Richard Carlson says the “doggie” hour “has honed their social skills a great deal.” Last year, Lucy befriended a male poodle named Senator. The owners held a wedding for the canine couple, complete with a wedding dress for Lucy. Ethel, always

The dog park opened in 2011, three years after the building did, to cater to the property’s 85 dogs. Property manager Mark Hannan says the number of dog-owning residents has grown 25 percent since the park opened.

New apartment buildings such as Wisconsin Place are leading the pack when it comes to pet-friendly amenities. “I can’t think of an example where a new building is not pet friendly,” says Debbie Kaplan, the chief operating officer of the apartment-finding service Urban Igloo. “Older rent-controlled buildings in D.C. typically don’t take pets, so as the newer inventory comes on, pets are part of it,” she says. “It’s not just an afterthought; they’re integrated into the community.” Archstone First and M Apartments (1160 First St. NE; 877242-9963, Avaloncommunities .com), which opened last June and is owned by AvalonBay, features D’Tails Salon, a pet spa with two washing stations — one for larger dogs and one for smaller dogs — plus hair dryers. Aprons and towels are provided for renters. Residents can also invite professional pet groomers to the salon. D’Tails also has its own outside entrance for pet owners, which comes in handy on rainy days with muddy paws. Currently, a third of the building is dedicated to pet owners, and they have about 40 dogs living in this special section. Tim Jezisek, 40, moved into First and M last July with Sundance, his 6-year-old Australian Labradoodle. He says a lot of buildings’ pet amenities were inspired

To draw more dog owners to its community of 300 pet owners, RiverHouse Apartments (1400 South Joyce St., Arlington;

Answers to common renter questions from the D.C. Office of the Tenant Advocate.
Every apartment I’ve ever lived in was supposed to be cleaned before I moved in, but it was always a mess when I got there. Is my landlord obligated to clean? Do I have any recourse if he hasn’t?
Q A
Under the District’s housing regulations, the landlord must ensure the apartment is safe, sanitary and habitable before renting it out. If the apartment or any common area of the building is unsafe or unsanitary, then the lease is rendered void and the tenant is free to vacate the unit without obligation to pay any rent. Unsafe and unsanitary, however, is a higher standard than unclean. Many leases state that the premises will be
delivered in a “clean” as well as in a “safe and sanitary condition.” Thus, if the unit is unclean upon move-in, the tenant potentially could claim that the landlord is in breach of the lease. However, in deciding whether unsafe, unsanitary or unclean housing conditions exist, a court generally will distinguish between major and minor problems. The tenant’s first recourse is always to request that the landlord or management office correct the

It is important that the tenant maintain a complete record of landlord-tenant correspondence, photographs, notices of housing code violations, the lease, etc. It is also important that the tenant inspect the apartment prior to moving in, create a check-list of disrepairs and other unsatisfactory conditions and present a copy to the landlord. When the tenant is ready to move out, this will help prevent the landlord from using the tenant’s security deposit to address issues that pre-dated the tenancy. Have a question for the advocate? EXPERIENCE ROCKVILLE’S FINEST APARTMENT HOME LIVING…
Gables Upper Rock The Newest Community That Has It All Gables Upper Rock boasts all the latest trends in quality apartment living while taking the latest in building sustainability to the highest level for all to appreciate. The newest upscale apartment community is built according to stringent National Association of Home Builders standards to provide residents with a “green” lifestyle.
Gables Upper Rock’s refreshing approach takes the latest in environmental consciousness to a new level of style.
“The age old adage of location, location, location has made Gables Upper Rock an immediate success. Our location, at the intersection of Shady Grove Road and I-270 in Rockville puts the Metro, the Beltway, Rockville Pike, and the ICC all within 5 minutes of the community. We are thrilled with how well Gables Upper Rock has been received by the community. All of Gables’ new communities are environmentally conscious, quality home environments that we plan on owning and operating for a long time.” states Jorgen Punda, Regional Vice President of Investments. Gables Upper Rock offers distinctive apartment homes featuring sleek kitchens with stainless steel appliances, quartz countertops and tile backsplashes. Community amenities include club-quality fitness center, indoor wi-fi cafe, clubroom, game room with foosball and pool table, an outdoor lounge with fire pit and a resort style pool. < CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE
As the newest luxury apartment community in Rockville, Upper Rock offers modern one and two-bedroom apartment homes. The apartment homes offer quartz countertops, stainless steel appliances, spa baths and oversized windows. In addition, in keeping with the “green” lifestyle, dual flush toilets, high efficiency heating and air conditioning units, and Energy Star appliances are also a standard feature. “Our community is almost completely leased after only 8 months. Due to this success, we decided to immediately move to the next phase which will open in early 2014, and will offer even more amenities to our residents, including a second pool and fitness center, social spaces, and a splash park,” continued Punda. “We also decided to celebrate by inviting the community to share in our success”, Punda added. We talked to some of the newest residents at Gables Upper Rock and here is what they had to say: “When my company told me they were transferring my job from Atlanta to DC, I was so nervous
about surviving the winter! My co-worker told me about Gables Upper Rock, and since everyone knows Gables in Atlanta, I decided to check it out in DC. Brandon made my move so easy, and really helped ease my anxieties about the relocation. When I told him that I loved entertaining outside and grilling out, he immediately suggested an apartment with a huge patio that overlooked the pool. I couldn’t be happier! The two outdoor kitchens, heated saltwater pool, and fire pit have made entertaining my new friends a huge hit. Everyone that comes over to my new apartment is shocked with how beautiful and well maintained it is. Brandon really listened and it made a huge difference. Thank you Brandon!” — Jennifer A “I received one of Gables Upper Rock’s post cards last fall and decided to tour the community when my lease was up in February. My husband and I have a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Murray and walking him around our old North Bethesda apartment was tough because of all of the traffic and congestion. I didn’t want to give up my gourmet kitchen or my soaking tub, so when we found Upper Rock, we were immediately sold. The community has a shuttle to the Shady Grove Metro which makes my husband’s commute to DC less stressful, and there are so many great places to walk our dog. It really feels like they planned this place for dog owners in mind. I even hear that one of the new buildings with have a Pet Grooming Salon! Just last month, Murray met new friends at the Yappy Hour that Gabby, the Assistant Manager, hosted for dog owners, and he already has a play date with my neighbor’s Pugs. It’s the little things that make it feel like home.” — Christina B
According to James Sprague, Community Manager, “Gables Residential is a not only a great place to work but more importantly, they really do believe in taking care of the way people live. I take pride in having happy residents. It makes it easy to come to work when you have such a beautiful community to be proud to represent.” The amenities offered that enhance the daily lifestyle at Upper Rock are unparalleled. “Gables Upper Rock was an opportunity for us to bring style and luxury to a market that is more accustom to traditional apartments. From Club UR, our hot game room with total Sports Immersion, to the beautifully landscaped grounds, no detail was overlooked. There is something at Gables Upper Rock that will appeal to everyone”, said J’aime Huret, Regional Manager.

Glitzy, But Not So ‘Great’ PHOTOS COURTESY WARNER BROS.
Baz Luhrmann turns ‘Gatsby’ into a gaudy, extravagant and underwhelming affair Film Review “It’s like an amusement park.” That’s Nick Carraway, the narrator of “The Great Gatsby,” describing one of the legendary parties thrown by the movie’s fabulously wealthy and elusive title character. But Carraway could just as easily be referring to the very movie he finds himself in, a hyper-real, hyperactive, hyperbolic adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel that spares no flower, flapper or fringe in bringing Jazz Age decadence to life. It takes a singular brand of chutzpah to consider perhaps the greatest piece of American literature of the 20th century and say, “What this story needs is 3-D.” Australian director Baz Luhrmann is just that audacious, staging Fitzgerald’s tale of reinvention and self-deception as a 21st-century spectacle and multiculti mash-up of Jay-Z, George Gershwin and everything in between. For all of Luhrmann’s swag-

book illustrations of overworked perfection. It’s glib to suggest that Luhrmann has made a “Great Gatsby” for idiots; it’s more like he’s made it for infants, who prefer their nourishment pre-masticated and their stories pictorialized by way of bright, arresting images. By no means is “The Great Gatsby” a disaster: Even at its most shallow, the film rescues Jay Gatsby as a largely sympathetic, romantic figure rather than a cynically ironic one. But neither is it necessary. Childlike, fetishistic and painfully literal, Luhrmann’s experiment proves once again that it’s Fitzgerald’s writing — not his plot, his characters or his grasp of material detail — that has always made “Gatsby” great. As for the characters, they’re little more than live-action props in Luhrmann’s curiously lavish depiction of the wages of lavish living.
Solid Gold Soundtrack The soundtrack for “The Great Gatsby,” which features Jay-Z, Beyonce and Andre 3000, is available in a lavish limited-edition set, featuring two records pressed on metallic LPs made of gold and platinum. It’s unclear, though, whether the records, which cost $250, are actually playable on a turntable. (E XPRESS)
Carey Mulligan brings less comehither effervescence than glum selfreflection to the heedless Southern debutante Daisy Buchanan; if Joel Edgerton plays Daisy’s husband, Tom, with too-rough edges, he embodies the role with muscle-bound, narrow-eyed menace. As Carraway, Tobey Maguire is his usual recessive presence, barely registering as either a dynamic part of the events he describes or their watchful witness. Gatsby himself remains offstage as “The Great Gatsby” gets under-

way, finally making his dramatic entrance against a backdrop of fireworks to the strains of “Rhapsody in Blue.” There are hints of Orson Welles’ Charles Foster Kane in Leonardo DiCaprio’s interpretation of Jay Gatsby, whom he plays with a playful glint, a boyish, athletic bounce and labored diction. Luhrmann uses 3-D less as a stunt than as a way to gain depth of field, as well as a comment on novelty, technology and shifting aesthetic expectations. All of that makes perfect theoretical sense but results in a film that is more performative than immersive, keeping the audience at a dreamlike, emotionally distant remove. lookout film KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY
The Disillusionist When I teach film, I often use clips from Baz Luhrmann movies as examples of formal techniques — montage, say, or framing. His use of the structure of filmmaking to communicate meaning is usually pretty easy to spot for beginning students, but he rarely steps into the schlock of, say, Ron Howard or Robert Zemeckis, who shall both stand in judgment for their crimes against cinema. (Howard will be exonerated based on his association with “Arrested Development.” Zemeckis will burn.) Luhrmann, a master of visual impact, fills his frames with such exuberance and life. There’s a shot in “Moulin Rouge” of 150 or so men
in evening dress turning around — taking the frame from dark to light in one second of choreographed movement — that gets me every time
Elizabeth Debicki and Tobey Maguire dirty dance, ’20s-style.
COURTESY WARNER BROS.
THE REELIST
I see it. Luhrmann knows the power of guys just turning around, assuming they’re wearing the right colors. Which is why it’s so strange that his latest, “The Great Gatsby,” out Friday, feels a little flat (ironic, since the film was shot in 3-D). “Gatsby” certainly has its strengths, most
of which are spelled “D-I-C-A-PR-I-O,” but Luhrmann’s directing seems overly restrained, particularly in the insane party scenes. It could be, of course, a deliberate choice: We all learned in high school that F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel is about disillusionment. Maybe
Luhrmann meant the scenes to be some sort of reflection of his source material — soulless parties for a soulless age — but I’m not buying it. The 3-D gives the image a nice depth, but Luhrmann doesn’t use it as masterfully as Scorsese did in “Hugo,” and the dim colors that always result from 3-D certainly don’t help. Watching Gatsby’s first party, with the flappers and gangsters and diamonds and fringe, all I could think was, “I wish he could have shot ‘Romeo + Juliet’ in 3-D.” Now that was a film where Luhrmann combined his passion for technique with actual passion and created magic. I can’t figure out where the magic went in “Gatsby,” but it certainly isn’t on the screen. Read Kristen’s previous columns at Readexpress.com/thereelist

“Venus and Serena” follows Venus, left, and Serena Williams, right, throughout 2011.
Secrets of A Sister Act ‘Venus and Serena’ lifts a veil on tennis’s trailblazing siblings Film Review Countless words have been written about Venus and Serena Williams in the 14 years since the sisters exploded onto the tennis scene. But no article or author has adequately explained the most remarkable story in professional sports: How two sisters from crime-ridden Compton, Calif., schooled by parents with no formal tennis training, became No. 1 in the world and transformed the women’s game. Granted access to the Williams family through the 2011 season, filmmakers Maiken Baird and Michelle Major come closer than anyone in “Venus and Serena.” Weaving a wealth of archival footage with surprisingly candid interviews with the sisters, now 32 (Venus) and 31 (Serena), and their parents, Richard Williams and Oracene Price, the documentary lifts a veil on the tight-knit Williams clan. In setting out to make “Venus and Serena,” the filmmakers had
no idea the 2011 season would be fraught with so many setbacks. Venus is forced out of that season’s first major tournament, the Australian Open, by an abdominal injury and withdraws from the U.S. Open because of an autoimmune disorder.
Venus and Serena (PG-13) Directors: Maiken Baird and Michelle Major In a Nutshell: A documentary look at tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams during the 2011 season.
And Serena, only recently recovered from foot surgery, is rushed to the hospital with a pulmonary embolism. The documentary reveals the sisters’ almost symbiotic closeness. They live together most of the year, cook together, do karaoke together and joke about how difficult it would be if one chose to get married. We know the ending at the outset: Venus and Serena become No. 1 in the world. The real story is their remarkable journey, which the film documents powerfully. LIZ CL ARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Craig Robinson, “The Office” costar, makes a play for leading man with uneven results in “Peeples,” a bland, quickly disposable romantic comedy presented by Tyler Perry. Playing opposite Kerry Washington — in a wan, underwritten departure
from her “Scandal” persona — Robinson sings, mugs, riffs and vamps his way through a barely warmedover “Meet the Parents” redux. Robinson plays Wade Walker, a would-be child therapist who sings inspirational songs to school children. His girlfriend, Grace Peeples (Washington), is a lawyer and has avoided introducing Wade to her high-achieving family for fear of their disapproval. Wade decides to take matters into his own hands, following Grace to a Peeples weekend at their gorgeous beach house. With its fish-out-of-water class conflict and ersatz setups (the main event during the weekend is a town

reading of “Moby-Dick”), “Peeples” lurches from one coming-downmain-street comic situation to the next, never giving its terrific cast much to do. David Alan Grier, for example, barks and glares on cue as Grace’s overbearing dad. The living, loving and learning in “Peeples” has to do with toxic secrets and the healing power of emotional honesty, but the point of the film is strictly genre-related, trotting out broad jokes and risque sight gags that center on an affectionate dog, nudism and that climactic “Moby-Dick” event, which winds up being quite a trip. Clean, Chic
DEAR MANOLO
TRINA TURK’S retro dresses and bright swimwear summon Palm Beach cocktails and Catalina surfing. Urban Chic (1626 Wisconsin Ave. NW, 202338-5398) hosts a trunk show of the L.A. designer’s preppy dresses, starlet-worthy pants and ethnic-print tops (shown, $188) on Saturday and Sunday. Mimosas and 15-percent-off orders up the appeal.
ANSWERS FROM THE SHOE BLOGGER
For the past month, my husband has been in Silicon Valley working on a business project. Next week, I’ll be joining him for a weeklong vacation in San Francisco and Napa Valley. I’m not sure what to wear. —MONICA Manolo says, for the Manolo, who is of the certain age, whenever someone says they are going to San Francisco, the Manolo thinks “be sure to wear some flowers in the hair.” But then the Manolo remembers that putting the flowers in the hair to go to the San Francisco is like dancing the Lindy Hop or wearing the coonskin cap to watch the Sunday-night television programming; the artifact of the distant past, poorly remembered and

bungalows with squared-off sofas and massive mirrors, Crate & Barrel is going into the housekeeping business, too. Its new Clean Slate department (in stores and at Crateandbarrel.com) features German-made Redecker brushes and dusters (shown, $5-$30), a sleek gray-and-white-striped laundry basket ($40), closet organizers and other stylish-yet-simple tools designed to guilt you into neatnik-ism.
Ware It Goes FOR THOSE WHO didn’t grow
Knot, Not Happening FOR THOSE leaving the wind-swept look at the beach, the Tangle Teezer’s Salon Elite hairbrush keeps strands kempt ($18, Tangleteezer.com). The plastic pod (which some at our office mistook for a groovy mouse) boasts plastic teeth that detangle tresses but don’t tug too hard on the scalp. It works on wet or dry locks.
up at Downton Abbey, setting a nice dinner table presents challenges. What’s a fish fork? Should you serve the cheese course before or after the sloppy Joes? Ice Milk Apron’s washed linen napkins ($42 for four, Red Barn Mercantile, 1117 King St., Alexandria; 703838-0355) can help, since they include a cute, cutleryholding tab.
Buzz Feed WE’RE DREADING having to pick cicadas out of our hair when Brood II swarms in. But hunks of chocolate shaped like the vermin we’re happy to cuddle up to ($3.50 each, Chocolate Moose, 1743 L St. NW; 202-463-0992). Made by Baltimore’s Mary Sue candy company, the dark or milk chocolate beasts are crunchy, but that’s puffed rice you’re chomping, not bits of exoskeleton. Still, the beady, white-chocolate eyes are an eerie reminder of the invasion to come.

perhaps better forgotten. (Ayyyy! The Manolo just looked it up! That song came out 46 years ago this week, in 1967, when the earth was still young and nubile.) Now the days, when one thinks of San Francisco, one is more likely to think of the unpleasant, shallowchested billionaires — the plague of the modern era — who believe they should rule the world from the front seat of their all-electric Google cars. “If you are going to Silicon Valley, Be sure to vest some options in your stock. If you are going to Silicon Valley, You’re going to meet some awful people there.” You will want to wear the sandals. Here is Eleni from Pour la Victoire ($215, Zappos.com), which will be sufficiently, defiantly bohemian. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

HASTE MANAGEMENT Flash sales can net you big deals, but they also may zap your time and money
Prada shoes at 70 percent off! Frette sheets for $150 a set, not $450! Four days at a Puerto Rican beach resort for the price of two! If you’re among the thousands of shoppers who subscribe to flash-sale alerts, a scan of your email inbox may read like a shopping list for the world’s largest discount store or the rallying calls of some virtual auctioneer. “At one point, I had to put a limit on how many of these flash sales I’d subscribe to,” says D.C. media buyer and confessed flash-sale addict Meredith Kaufman, 28. “When I first started shopping on them, I probably got five or six alerts a day, and it was just too much.”
Still, if you like to buy online and you, like most people with a pulse, enjoy bargains, these shortterm markets (they last from a few hours to a few days) offer a virtual warehouse of stuff and services. Simply sign up for alerts (you can’t see what the websites are
hawking without coughing up an email), then start scrolling through quirky foodstuffs, vintage housewares and Brooklyn-esque T-shirts (Fab.com), haute fashions (Gilt.com, Ruelala.com) or kids’ toys and clothing (Zulily.com). You’ll be joining a cadre of other browsaholics: U.S. flash sites raked in $2 billion in 2012, according to IBISWorld market research estimates. So are flash sales an e-commerce miracle that will save consumers money and expose them to cool brands or merchandise? Or are they an overwhelming inbox clogger and time-waster that will land you in Shopaholics Anonymous? Not surprisingly, they’re a little bit of both. A quick browse through one afternoon’s worth of offers (most

(Gilt.com) or vintage dresses picked out by a Brooklyn hipster (Fab .com). The prices on these sorts of things aren’t necessarily marked down in a big way, but the pieces are more interesting than what’s on the shelves at Target. As with any form of commerce, t here a re pit fa lls. “Don’t be romanced by the prices at a flash sale,” says D.C. stylist Lauren Rothman of Styleauteur.com. “You might think, ‘OMG, a Parker maxi dress, and it’s cheap!’ But if you don’t have anywhere to wear it or shoes to go with it, it’s not a bargain.”
sales go live at noon) suggests that the prices, indeed, are pretty good. On Ruelala.com, men’s Original Penguin shorts run $30 a pair — they’re from last season, but this spring’s go for twice that. At housewares-mad Onekingslane .com, a curvy yellow wall mirror runs $299; a near-identical one at spendy Horchow.com is $475. Sites also do double-duty as curators of nifty stuff, cueing fans in on goods they may not have found on their own. “Some of the things flash sales find truly are surprising,” says Jody Rohlena, deputy editor of bargain-hunting magazine ShopSmart. This might mean blankets made of recycled Indian saris (Jossandmain.com), latkes by mail
$2B The amount that U.S. flash-sale sites (think Gilt.com, Jossandmain .com and Myhabit.com) earned in 2012, according to IBISWorld, a research analysis firm.
There’s certainly a rush to buying merchandise in a limitedtime window. That, plus the sites’ tendency to post palpitation-causing cues such as “ONLY ONE LEFT!” or “IN ANOTHER MEMBER’S CART!” can goad you to nab, say, a Versailles-style birdbath when you live in a balcony-less studio. “Yes, there’s an incentive to purchase right away at flash sales so it can feel competitive, like an eBay auction,” says Laura Swanstrom Reece, 40, who lives in Great Falls and frequently trawls flash sales. Says Rohlena: “Those emails come relentlessly, so it can be tempting to overbuy. There’s a chance you’ll snap something up for the thrill of it.” Still, if you keep a few tips in mind, these sales can turn up designer bargains or unusual pieces. For clothing, consider sticking to brands (and sizes) you’re familiar with. Some purchases are final, so

“HILARIOUS!” Maria Salas, TERRA-TV (Miami)
Quick Draws Besides the big guns — Gilt.com, Myhabit.com, Ideeli.com, Ruelala .com — a slew of lesser-known sites offer surprising deals.
Artspace.com Paintings, sculptures and other works by up-and-coming artists. Favorite find: Serge Hamad’s stark photos of the beach ($75 each).
Doggyloot.com Toys and snacks for Fido. Favorite find: One Treat ball launcher ($12; retail value $25)
Theclymb.com Active trips and sports equipment at up to 70 percent off. Favorite find: Hobie sunglasses ($35; retail value $70)
Therealreal.com Like a women’s consignment shop crossed with a flash sale, this site deals in used designer clothing (Chanel, Fendi, DVF). Best buy: Bettye Muller gingham slingbacks ($45; $300 if new) J.B.
keep this — and shipping costs — in mind when clicking and dealing. “Shop with a list,” Rothman says. “That way, if you’re looking for summer wedges or white denim capris, you can jump on a flashsale deal.” For housewares and food, Google around to be sure you’re getting a better price (shipping and tax included) on that leopard-print carpet than you would at a local store or another website. But when the timing’s right, flash sales can amount to, well, retail magic. Reece recently scored a Carolina Herrera ball gown for 75 percent off. “It makes me feel like Cinderella, and I get compliments from complete strangers,” she says. That’s a lot of flash for not too much cash. JENNIFER BARGER (EXPRESS)

Giving ‘Rent’ Its Due
No Limit to Our Love British singer/songwriter/DJ James Blake became a critical darling in 2011 because of the way he merged dubstep with soul music. Blake’s new album, “Overgrown,” further cements his status as one of electronic music’s most forward-thinking acts, integrating more gospel and folk influences into his sometimes chaotic sonic experiments. 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW; Sun., 7 p.m., sold out; 202-265-0930, 930.com. In the 1990s, teenagers found new idols in the dissolute, entitled artist kids who populated the musical “Rent.” As a member of the original cast, Adam Pascal will always have a built-in fan base of former teenagers who found his angst appealing. “This could pave the way for companies like HBO to get off the pay cable bandwagon and move towards a more direct market.” — COMMENTER JONATHANCPAYSON AT ENGADGET.COM reacts to
YouTube’s new pay channels, unveiled Thursday. The feature will allow producers to charge a subscription fee for the videos they post, starting at 99 cents a month.
“We now know the identity of the Miami Heat fan who decided to stick her middle finger right in Joakim Noah’s face last night. Her backstory is just as ridiculous as you would expect it to be.” — TOM LEY AT DEADSPIN.COM points
out that Filomena Tobias — the woman seen in a viral photo making an obscene gesture toward a Bulls player after he was ejected from an NBA playoff game Wednesday — was once married to hedge-fund manager Seth Tobias, whose 2007 death made headlines for the salacious accusations that followed.

Paramount Pictures moved the release date of “Star Trek Into Darkness” to May 16, a day earlier than expected, because of heavy demand to see sneak previews.
