A mummified monkey found in the air ducts of a former department store in Minneapolis is going on display. The Star Tribune reported Thursday that the Science Museum of Minnesota plans to show the monkey in its St. Paul lobby. The remains were discovered last month in the former flagship branch of Dayton’s department store chain. While it’s not known why the monkey was there, it apparently got loose and scurried into an air duct. (AP)

A semi-trailer truck hauling 8 million dimes ($800,000) on a contract with the U.S. Treasury Department crashed Tuesday on an interstate near Las Vegas, spilling thousands of coins onto the roadside. The Nevada Highway Patrol said the truck was heading south on I-15 about 50 miles from Las Vegas when it hit a guard rail in the early morning. The driver and a passenger were taken to a hospital. Their injuries weren’t life-threatening. (AP)

An Iowa man says his dog inadvertently shot him while they were roughhousing Wednesday. Richard Remme, of Fort Dodge, told police he was playing with his dog, Balew, on the couch and tossed the dog off his lap. He says when the dog bounded back up, it must have disabled the safety on the gun in his belly band and stepped on the trigger. The gun fired, striking one of Remme’s legs. He was treated at a hospital and released that day. (AP)

The Michael Jordan memorabilia market remains hot. Someone just paid $47,872.50 at auction for an autographed, game-used jersey Jordan wore during his two seasons playing for the Washington Wizards, an era remembered fondly by just about no one except maybe someone who would pay $47,872.50 for a used shirt. According to Goldin Auctions, which handled the sale, Jordan wore the jersey during a Dec. 18, 2002, game against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The main room of the pop-up bar (in the former Eat the Rich space) is a replica of St. George’s Chapel, where the wedding will take place. The design team studied a 360-degree view of the chapel on Google to get everything right. One side is a wall of cathedral windows; the other has flags bearing the crests of the queen’s knights in the Order of the Garter. Aspiazu carved the stone pattern on the ceiling from foam coating. This is the company’s first pop-up where even the floor is decked out — it’s checkered just like the chapel.

To make sure this bar was worthy of the Queen of England, the design team got the British Embassy involved. The chef at the embassy made a decoration for the bar: an inedible replica of the lemon elderflower cake Harry and Meghan will cut on their wedding day. One raffle winner will receive an actual version of the cake. Aspiazu said the embassy even donated a life-size Beefeater statue that stands guard by the bar’s bathrooms. Guests can also mail their congratulations to the royal couple through the embassy.

Members of the royal family would certainly find something to order, because the cocktail menu is inspired by their tastes, Aspiazu said. While the family is known to be private, their drinking habits are well-documented. Queen Elizabeth likes a stiff martini; Meghan Markle reportedly is fond of Aperol spritzes; and Prince Harry loves things that are bananaflavored. At Royal PUB, they would enjoy the God Save the Queen, Markle Sparkle and When Harry Met Meghan, respectively.

Audit: Metro reviews could not be trusted

BALTIMORE

Police commissioner charged with tax fraud

Fake inspections cited after concrete, steel fell at Rhode Island station BONNIE JO MOUNT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION In dozens of cases, Metro crews copied and pasted language from prior years’ structural inspection reports for the Rhode Island Avenue station and skipped inspections of hard-to-reach and lowvisibility areas, culminating in a steel beam and concrete chunks falling from the structure on two consecutive days in 2016, Metro’s Office of the Inspector General concluded in a new report released Thursday. No one was injured, but Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland stations will be shut down for 45 days starting July 21 to permanently address the structural failures that came to light when concrete came tumbling from the station’s ceiling on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 2016. The audit comes more than a year after Metro abruptly fired a third of its track inspection department for widespread record fabrication that the agency said contributed to a derailment near East Falls Church in summer 2016. And it raises new questions about the agency’s ability to ensure the safety and reliability of the system. The audit found 49 places over three years where the annual inspection reports for Rhode

TRANSPORTATION

Metro’s structural inspections could not be trusted for years, culminating in falling concrete at Rhode Island Avenue, an internal review found.

Island Avenue contained the exact wording as the prior year’s reports, the IG concluded in its year-long review. In 29 of those cases, the inspector general could not determine what Metro crews had inspected, while in 20 other cases, inspectors simply said nothing had changed since the prior year’s inspection, according to the report. A 2015 Metro inspection, for example, noted a fracture in the deck where concrete pieces later fell, but a follow-up assessment in 2016 omitted that, suggesting Metro did not act on the problem — though Metro disputes that account. An agency spokesman noted the language that was purported to be missing was included in another section of the report, which he pointed out Thursday.

The report says Metro did not have procedures in place to identify the weathered bolts, hidden from view, that caused a steel beam to fall. And when it patched the problem, the wooden falsework remained in place a year and a half later, the report says. Metro said the agency is in the process of developing a structural inspections manual that will ensure those areas are evaluated, and the project is expected to be completed in summer 2019. “This level of inspection may not have been required when Metro’s infrastructure was younger. However, as OIG noted, ‘As the infrastructure ages, additional inspection techniques need to be deployed,’ ” Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said. “We concur.” FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Purple Line tests could start next year Light-rail trains for Maryland’s Purple Line will begin running on test tracks in Prince George’s County in 2019 or after, the project’s contractor said Thursday. CAF USA will begin assembling the rail cars this year at a plant in Elmira, N.Y., with parts shipped from Spain, said Fred Craig, chief executive of Purple Line Transit Partners. Each Purple Line train will have one 143-foot “light-rail vehicle” that will have about 80 seats and, with standing room, will carry as many as 431 people. Trains will run mostly aboveground via an overhead electric line. Construction on the 16-mile line between Montgomery and Prince George’s counties began in August, and it’s scheduled to start carrying passengers in 2022. KATHERINE SHAVER (TWP)

The survey said the bay will likely produce an average number of crabs despite an unusually cold spring. This year’s cold weather and ice cover took a toll on the adult crab population. But the number of young crabs saw a significant increase. The population is down from last year by about 18 percent. But officials said the population is still within safe levels. (AP)

Facebook ads show range of Russia plan

TAKEAN EXPRESSON YOURBREAK.

ELECTIONS Democrats on the House intelligence committee on Thursday released more than 3,500 Facebook ads that were created or promoted by a Russian internet agency, providing the fullest picture yet of Russia’s attempt to sow racial and political division in the United States before and after the 2016 election. Most of the ads are issuebased, pushing arguments for and against immigration, LGBT issues and gun rights, among other issues. A large number of them attempt to stoke racial divisions by mentioning police brutality or disparaging the Black Lives Matter movement. Some promote President Trump or Bernie Sanders, who ran against Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential primaries. Few, if any, support Clinton. The intelligence committee Democrats released a sampling of the ads purchased by Russia’s Internet Research Agency last year, but they are now releasing the full cache of ads that Facebook officials turned over to the panel after acknowledging in September they had discovered the Russian efforts. The release of ads from early 2015 through mid-2017 does not include 80,000

posts that the agency also shared. Some of the ads are partially redacted, part of an effort by Facebook and the committee to protect unsuspecting people whose names or faces were used. An Associated Press review of the thousands of ads and their data shows how precisely — and sometimes randomly — the agency targeted people. Some ads designed to appeal to critics of immigration were targeted to users who liked specific Fox News hosts, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, “Old Glory” and the United States Constitution, among other words. On Instagram, an IRA ad in February 2016 sought to target people believed to be police officers, firefighters and military officers, urging them to appear at a protest of Beyonce outside of

NFL headquarters. At the same time, another account — targeting black users — directed viewers to a pro-Beyonce protest at the same location. It offered one example of the extent to which Russian trolls sought to exploit both sides of major national debates — including football players who knelt during the national anthem to bring attention to issues of racism. Hundreds of the ads ran after the election, continuing the effort to sow discord. A series of ads posted two days after Trump was elected urge his supporters to show up at Trump Tower in Manhattan to respond to the “massive crowds of libtards” who protested him. Israel, Iran exchange fire Attacks raise specter of higher escalation between rivals’ forces in Syria, Golan Heights

Iraqi forces in coordination with U.S.-backed Syrian fighters have captured five senior Islamic State leaders, the U.S.-led coalition said Thursday. A Pentagon spokesman, Marine Maj. Adrian J.T. Rankine-Galloway, said the arrests made along the Iraq-Syria border “are a significant blow to ISIS as we continue to remove its leadership and fighters from the battlefield.” (AP)

SYRIAN CENTRAL MILITARY MEDIA VIA AP

MIDDLE EAST Israeli forces unleashed a heavy bombardment against Iranian military installations in Syria on Thursday in what Israel called retaliation for an Iranian rocket barrage on its positions in the occupied Golan Heights, the most serious military confrontation between the two enemies to date. The two rivals have long fought each other through proxies, and with the new exchange each seemed to be sending a warning that a direct clash between them could swiftly escalate. “If we get rain, they’ll get a flood,” Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman warned. The scope of the attacks — which Israel called its largest in Syria since the 1973 Mideast war — raised the specter of a full-fledged war between Iran and Israel in Syria, a conflict that could potentially drag the militant group Hezbollah and Lebanon, where Israel has fought repeated battles in recent years, into the mix. However, both sides appeared to signal they wanted the confrontation to remain contained, for now. Israel, however, has been emboldened by President Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal earlier this week, and the latest escalation seemed to signal a coordinated surge in military activity targeting Iran. The Israeli military said Thursday it hit nearly all of Iran’s military installations in Syria in response to the overnight Iranian rocket barrage that targeted Israeli front-line military positions in the Golan Heights, a strategic plateau that Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

MIDDLE EAST

Iraqi, Syrian fighters join to capture 5 ISIS leaders

It was the first time Israel has directly accused Iran of firing toward Israeli territory. Syrian and Iranian news outlets accused Israel of firing the first shot, saying it was Syria that had responded after Israel targeted the Syrian town of Quneitra this week with artillery fire and missiles, The Washington Post reported. Iranian media described the Israeli attack as “unprecedented,” but there was no official response from the Iranian government. Iran had vowed to retaliate for repeated Israeli airstrikes targeting its forces in Syria this week. But it seemed to carefully calibrate its response by targeting the Golan Heights, which Israel annexed in 1981 in a move that is not internationally recognized, instead of striking Israel proper. Tehran is wary of a wider military conflagration with Israel that could jeopardize its military achievements in Syria at a time when it is trying to salvage the

Israel’s role in Syria Israel has carried out over 100 airstrikes in neighboring Syria since the civil war erupted in 2011, most believed to be aimed at suspected Iranian weapons shipments bound for the Hezbollah militant group. But in the past few weeks, Israel has shifted to a more direct and public confrontation with Iran, striking at Iranian bases, weapons depots and rocket launchers across Syria, and killing Iranian troops. The recent clashes reveal the difficulty both sides face in dealing with an unprecedented situation, said Jean-Pierre Filiu, a professor of Middle East studies at Sciences Po, Paris School of International Affairs. likely lead not to further escalation, but to the “consolidation of new ‘red lines’ tacitly endorsed by Israel and Iran,” he said. In addition to Iranian military targets, Israel said it also said it destroyed several Syrian air defense systems. The Syrian military said the strikes destroyed a radar station and an ammunition warehouse, and damaged a number of air defense units. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 23 fighters, including five Syrian soldiers, were killed. It was not immediately clear if any Iranians were among the dead. The White House swiftly condemned Iran’s “provocative rocket attacks from Syria against Israeli citizens” and expressed strong support for “Israel’s right to act in self-defense,” while Russia said the Israeli strikes marked a dangerous escalation and urged both Israel and Iran to avoid provoking each other. Trump, Kim to meet June 12 Summit in Singapore comes after N. Korea frees 3 U.S. prisoners

NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump will meet with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un in Singapore on June 12, Trump announced Thursday, hours after suggesting that the release of three Americans held in the North heralded a potential breakthrough toward denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. “We will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!” Trump said in a tweet. With the final details in place, Trump and Kim will meet in the first North Korea-U.S. summit talks since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. Kim has suspended nuclear and missile tests and put his nuclear program up for negotiation, but questions remain about how serious his offer is and what disarmament steps he would be willing to take. Earlier Thursday, with the released Americans by his side on a dark air base tarmac, Trump said during a made-for-TV ceremony that it was a “great honor” to welcome the men back to the U.S., but he added that “the true honor is going to be if we have a victory in getting rid of nuclear weapons.” Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, other top officials and the first lady joined the president in the celebration early Thursday at Andrews Air Force Base. They appeared tired but in excellent spirits, flashing peace signs and waving their arms as they emerged from the aircraft. When asked by reporters how it felt to be home, one of the men answered through a translator, “It’s like a dream; we are very, very happy.” They later gave the president a round of applause. Suggesting that recovery from their ordeals would take time, Pence recounted Thursday morning that Pompeo told him that at the refueling stop in Anchorage, “one of the detainees asked to go outside the plane because he hadn’t seen daylight in a very

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where they were to be evaluated and receive medical treatment before being reunited with their families. The public display stood in stark contrast to the low-key, private reception the State Department had envisioned, in keeping with a practice of trying to protect potentially traumatized victims from being thrust into the spotlight so soon after their ordeal. Trump thanked the North Korean leader for releasing the Americans and said he believes Kim wants to reach an agreement on denuclearization at their upcoming summit. “I really think he wants to do something,” the president said. IF A TREE FALLS IN THE CITY…

The approximate number of trees lost annually in U.S. cities, according to a U.S. Forest Service study reported Thursday in The Guardian. From 2009 to 2014, the study found, urban areas saw tree cover retreat by about 175,000 acres per year, and an estimated 40 percent of those spaces were replaced with impervious surfaces, such as buildings, sidewalks and roads. Washington, D.C., had the secondhighest rate of loss in solely urban areas (0.44 percent). Urban forests help to clean the air and provide stormwater control. Two years ago, Army Pvt. Shamika Burrage almost died when she was ejected from her car during a crash in Texas. When she woke up in the hospital, her entire left ear was gone. But Burrage, now 21, is on the path to recovery. In a procedure hailed as the “first of its kind” in the Army, an ear was reconstructed and “grown” under the skin of her right forearm, according to the Army. No prosthetics were needed. Instead, plastic surgeons used the soldier’s own cartilage. The ear was later attached to Burrage’s head by surgeons at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas. The Army said Burrage recovered her hearing and that the operation was a success, according to a statement Monday. The total ear reconstruction involved doctors carving a new ear out of cartilage harvested from Burrage’s ribs. The ear was then placed under her forearm skin to let it grow. The procedure is one of the most complicated ear constructions in the U.S., ABC News reports, and allows for the formation of new blood vessels in the cartilage. This means Burrage will also have feeling in her new ear once rehabilitation is complete, the Army said. Niger report reveals failures NATIONAL SECURITY Multiple failures led up to the deadly Niger attack last October, but top military leaders said Thursday that none directly caused the enemy ambush by ISIS-liked militants that killed four American service members and sent others fighting and running for their lives. “The direct cause of the enemy attack in Tongo Tongo is that the enemy achieved tactical surprise there and our forces were outnumbered approximately three-to-one,” Maj. Gen. Roger Cloutier Jr. told reporters during

From left: Staff Sgt. Bryan C. Black, 35, of Puyallup, Wash.; Staff Sgt. Jeremiah W. Johnson, 39, of Springboro, Ohio; Sgt. La David Johnson of Miami Gardens, Fla.; and Staff Sgt. Dustin M. Wright, 29, of Lyons, Ga. All were killed in Niger in October during an ambush by ISIS-linked militants.

a Pentagon press conference. He described a brutal, chaotic firefight, as 46 U.S. and Nigerien forces battled more than 100 enemy fighters. Amid the chaos, he said, there were repeated acts of bravery as the outnumbered and outgunned soldiers made splitsecond decisions under heavy fire.

Killed in the attack were: Army Sgt. La David T. Johnson, 25, of Miami Gardens, Fla.; Staff Sgt. Bryan C. Black, 35, of Puyallup, Wash.; Staff Sgt. Jeremiah W. Johnson, 39, of Springboro, Ohio; and Staff Sgt. Dustin M. Wright, 29, of Lyons, Ga. Four Nigerien troops were also killed.

After months of silence during the investigation, Gen. Thomas Waldhauser, head of U.S. Africa Command, laid out the findings and took responsibility. He said the report, which has not yet been made public in full, singles out three individuals whose actions could be faulted. He did not name them. U.S. Special Operations Command will make any discipline decisions, as well as recommendations on awards for valor, Waldhauser said. The investigation has already triggered changes in the way military activities are carried out in Niger and elsewhere in Africa, including giving teams the option to use heavily armored vehicles and beefed-up firepower.

BRONZE AGE VIRUS

The hepatitis B virus has been infecting people since at least the Bronze Age, according to a study released Wednesday in the journal Nature. The authors examined 304 samples of humans from Europe and Asia who lived between 200 and 7,000 years ago. They found 12 hepatitis B genomes in 25 people, the oldest viral genomes recovered from remains. (TWP)

SOLAI, KENYA | People gather near the broken banks of the Patel dam in Kenya’s Rift Valley on Thursday. The dam burst after weeks of heavy rains, sweeping away or submerging hundreds of homes. At least 44 people, 20 of them children, were killed and over 40 individuals were missing as of Thursday. The dam burst is now the single deadliest incident caused by Kenya’s seasonal rains, which began in March and have killed over 170 people.

Hungarian parliament elects Prime Minister Viktor Orban to 3rd consecutive term

POLITICS Three days after President Trump took office, telecom giant AT&T turned to his personal attorney, Michael Cohen, for help on various issues pending before the federal government — including its proposed merger with Time Warner, according to documents obtained by The Washington Post. The internal documents reveal for the first time that Cohen’s $600,000 deal with AT&T specified that he would provide advice on the $85 billion merger, which required the approval of federal antitrust regulators. Trump has long opposed the merger, which would include CNN, one of his chief targets when deriding “fake news.” Cohen’s deals with various corporate clients were first revealed this week by an attorney for adult-film actor Stormy Daniels. The documents obtained by The Post offered greater detail about his arrangement with AT&T and the type of work he had been hired to perform. It is unclear what insight Cohen — a real estate attorney and former taxicab operator — could have provided AT&T on complex telecom matters. The documents specified that Cohen, who was not a registered lobbyist, was to spend no time lobbying. They described his work as advising the company. ROSALIND S. BACK ON THE ICE

BRUCE BENNETT (GETTY IMAGES)

Wilson may scale back physical play

From left, T.J. Oshie, Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom have gotten a lift from young teammates who haven’t shared past playoff shortcomings.

BARRY SVRLUGA | THE WASHINGTON POST

Pressure drop: Unburdened Caps can enjoy the ride On the eve of the first conference finals in two decades for a Washington sports team, the Capitals and their fans should cleanse themselves of all their horrifying, exhausting playoff history. Their opponent this time, the Lightning, had the most wins in the NHL in the regular season and blitzed through the first two rounds of the playoffs with eight wins in 10 games. Tampa Bay is the favorite in the Eastern Conference finals, perhaps even a heavy one. When was the last time the

Capitals entered a playoff series with this much house money, skating free and easy because their entire reputation won’t be attached to the result? It must be 2008. Washington only got to a first-round series against Philadelphia because the Caps, under then-interim coach Bruce Boudreau, went on an 11-1 stretch and won the division on the season’s last night. The Caps suffered a painful 3-2 loss in overtime of Game 7, but the sense was still that something was starting. Washington had young centerpieces in Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom, both making their playoff debuts

that year. There was optimism about those Capitals. A loss to the Lightning wouldn’t bring the same feeling, because Ovechkin is 32 and Backstrom is 30. But, for the first time since, the Capitals are unburdened. “That pressure of being the No. 1 seed the last couple years,” defenseman Matt Niskanen said, “I think weighed on us a little bit.” I’m buying that these Caps are freer of mind, and therefore freer of body. The hiccup of this postseason — blowing two-goal leads in back-to-back home losses to Columbus to open the playoffs — is over. These Capitals have won eight of 10 since. And with five rookies in the lineup for the clinching Game 6 in Pittsburgh, they have some contributors who aren’t burdened by all the history we dredge up over and over again. T.J. Oshie, a 10-year veteran who had never been past the second round, was sitting next to Brooks Orpik the other day

when the advantage of inexperience dawned on him. “He was like, ‘These damn young guys,’ ” Orpik said. “ ‘They just walk right into this and they probably think this is going to happen every … year.’ ” The lineup won’t contain all of those players in Friday’s series opener (8, NBCSN). But in Orpik’s view, the presence not only of a rookie such as Jakub Vrana, who scored the gamewinner in Game 5 against the Penguins, but of new-to-theorganization players such as Devante Smith-Pelly and Alex Chiasson helped, too. Why? Frankly, they were “guys that had no [link] to past failures,” Orpik said. “I think that definitely relaxed us.” Let’s shelve all we have learned in the decade since the “Young Guns” faced the Flyers. These Capitals, in this series, can just play. And to this point, just playing has brought out the best version of themselves.

Tom Wilson was forced to watch his Capitals teammates eliminate the Penguins without him as he served a three-game suspension for what the NHL deemed an illegal check to the head of Zach Aston-Reese. Wilson will be back on the Caps’ top line Friday in Tampa Bay for Game 1 of the conference finals, but he’s confounded and frustrated about how to change his physical style. He emphatically disagreed with the suspension, but he might have to err on the side of caution to avoid further discipline. Coach Barry Trotz advised Wilson to “stay on the right side of the line.” After video study, Wilson said he’ll make an effort to finish hits low through the core to avoid another shoulderto-head hit. QUESTIONABLE FOR GAME 1

Backstrom, Burakovsky back at practice

Center Nicklas Backstrom and left wing Andre Burakovsky, left, both took steps in their recovery from “upper-body” injuries on Thursday, but coach Barry Trotz described both as “day-to-day” and questionable for Friday’s series opener at Tampa Bay. Backstrom skated on his own for the first time since suffering a right hand injury Saturday. Burakovsky practiced for the second straight day and wore a full-contact jersey. (TWP)

A ‘50-50’ shot to get Rooney

AP

Wayne Rooney, the top scorer in English team history, reportedly wants to leave Everton.

NFL

Patricia denies allegation of sex assault from 1996

British reports say star will join D.C. United, but source says negotiations are ongoing

23.6

Rooney could become the latest high-profile international player to join MLS late in his career. Others since 2007 have included David Beckham, David Villa, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Kaka, Andrea Pirlo, Bastian Schweinsteiger and, most recently, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. D.C. has two open slots for designated players, who make

considerably more than the average MLS player. The only current DP is Paul Arriola, a U.S. national team midfielder. D.C.’s wish list this summer has also included Italy’s Mario Balotelli, Argentina’s Carlos Tevez and Mexico’s Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. It’s unclear how much money the club is willing to spend on the roster. STEVEN GOFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

ROOKIE LEADER

The average points per game scored by Boston’s Jayson Tatum in a five-game series against the 76ers, most on the team and most by any Celtics rookie in one series since Tom Heinsohn averaged 24 points in 1957. Tatum, 20, was the No. 3 overall pick out of Duke. He gave Boston the lead for good in a 114-112 win Wednesday night on a last-minute layup. The Celtics face the Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals Sunday (3:30 p.m., ABC) in Boston. (AP) Top-ranked Halep loses to Pliskova in Madrid quarterfinals

GETTY IMAGES

If Rooney signs, he would not be eligible to play until the MLS transfer and trade window opens July 10. Audi Field, the team’s new stadium, will open July 14. Club officials said they will not comment on the Rooney matter. In general, the investment group and technical staff have spoken openly about pursuing high-end players this summer. The club is looking to bolster the on-field product — United is 1-4-2 this season and last year tied for the fewest points in the league — while adding a major draw to sell tickets at the new venue in Southwest D.C. Rooney is past his prime in the elite Premier League and has retired from the national team, meaning he will not play in the World Cup this summer in Russia. However, D.C. believes he would have a major impact in MLS, which has improved over the years but remains a big step behind the top European circuits. Rooney has scored 11 goals for Everton, his boyhood club, but none since December. The Guardian reported Thursday that Rooney will wait to see if Everton removes manager Sam Allardyce before making a final decision on joining D.C.

CLIVE BRUNSKILL (GETTY IMAGES)

MLS D.C. United on Thursday was moving closer to striking a deal with superstar Wayne Rooney, but people familiar with the negotiations said talks are likely to continue for another week. BBC and Sky News reported the sides have an agreement in principle for the 32-year-old from England to join the MLS club this summer. However, one person close to the D.C. organization told The Washington Post that the chances of signing the attacker were “50-50.” Rooney is the career scoring leader for both Manchester United and the English national team. He played for Liverpoolbased Everton this season and, although he has a year remaining on his contract, the sides are reportedly prepared to part ways. Everton, eighth in the 20-team Premier League, will play its last match Sunday at West Ham. D.C. would almost certainly have to pay a transfer fee. BBC and Sky reported United would pay about $17 million, by far the largest acquisition sum in the club’s 22-year history. D.C. would also have to agree to a multiyear, guaranteed contract in the millions, another club record.

Lions coach Matt Patricia said Thursday he was “falsely accused” in a 1996 sexual assault allegation that resurfaced this week. Patricia, 43, briefly spoke to reporters a day after the Detroit News reported that he and a friend were indicted by a Texas grand jury on one count each of aggravated sexual assault against a woman. The accuser did not testify, and the case was dismissed. The Lions said Wednesday night that a preemployment background check did not turn up the incident. The team said it was standing by its first-year coach. (AP)

Leading Panthers bidder wants Peyton to invest A leading bidder for the Panthers has reached out to Peyton Manning about joining his ownership group, the Charlotte Observer reported Wednesday. The group is led by Ben Navarro, a 54-year-old billionaire based in Charleston, S.C., who heads an investment company. Navarro reportedly leads the bidding for the Charlotte, N.C., based team at $2.6 billion. That would set a record for U.S. sports teams. Other known bidders include Steelers minority owner David Tepper and private-equity firm CEO Alan Kestenbaum. (TWP)

The Do’s and Don’ts of a Shared Bathroom

Franklin Park at Greenbelt Station

A re you renting an apartment that has only one shared bathroom? Below is a list of the Do’s and Don’ts of how to manage.

THE DO'S Bring Your Own Cleaning Supplies Having your own cleaning supplies means not having to rely on roommates in order to clean the bathroom. This is a good way to hold yourself accountable. Plus, you can clean the bathroom on your own time. Get cleaning supplies for the toilet, shower, mirror(s), etc. Ask the people or person with whom you share the bathroom if they want to take turns cleaning.

Clean After Messes Spot cleaning in the bathroom could save

Common Courtesy Take short showers, be quiet if you are taking a shower late at night or early in the morning, and cover up your body (just in case). Taking shorter showers will give you and whomever you are sharing the bathroom with an equal/fair amount of time under some hot water. Being quiet while using the shower late at night or early in the morning, will go a long way. Covering up your body with a towel or robe when going from the bathroom to your bedroom is important because if someone accidentally crosses paths with you, you don’t want to be showing them what ‘ya mama gave ya’. In short, don’t sprint down the hall naked and be sure to lock the door every single time you are using the bathroom.

you a lot of time and hassle while keeping your restroom area consistently spotless. Take the time to clean the sink or mirror immediately after you brush your teeth if there is any residue left over. Leaving toothpaste in the sink can be annoying to some people, but to avoid annoyance, just clean up after yourself. Take out the trash if you see it becoming full or to the point where itȇs overȾowing, and you can also leave a bottle of spray cleaner in the shower with a squeegee to wipe down everything after each use.

THE DONT'S Cleaning Supplies Do not borrow your roommate(s) cleaning supplies to clean the bathroom! They will think that they’re not obligated to clean the bathroom, since they’ve pitched in the cleaning supplies you’re borrowing. To save yourself the headache of “who bought what, just split the total cost of all cleaning supplies

6220 Springhill Drive Greenbelt, MD 20770 240.696.4709 right down the middle so they can be shared without hassle.

Messes Do not leave clothes or dirty towels on the Čľoor when you are done in the bathroom, leave toothpaste or spit in the sink, leave stuÎ? in the toilet (you know what I mean by “stuÎ?â€?), etc. It is rude to leave such things in the bathroom because it is SHARED. It would be diÎ?erent if you had your own bathroom, then you could do whatever you please because it’s your private space. Lastly, do not let the trash overČľow!

Common Courtesy Do not be loud when taking a shower late at night or early in the morning. This includes: slamming stuff around in the bathroom, singing in the shower, playing music in the shower, talking to someone on the phone in the shower, and so on. Also, do not take long showers. It is not fair to the other person or people you share the bathroom with if they need to use it as well. Try these do’s and don’ts to avoid bathroom conflict in your shared bathroom with your roommate. These tips may be a lifesaver! ‘Let the Sunshine In’ You’ll never believe it, but that’s Melissa McCarthy wearing an outrageous wig and a comically loud outfit!

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Left behind: ‘Life of the Party’ fails Melissa McCarthy Here’s the good thing about “Life of the Party”: You don’t have to worry about missing anything if you go pee, because you already know what’s going to happen! (OK, there’s one surprising moment. ONE. But don’t spend the money to find out what it is. Just email me and I’ll tell you.) The plot goes like this: Deanna (Melissa McCarthy, who wrote the script with director and husband Ben Falcone) has been married for 23 years. Her husband (Matt Walsh) suddenly declares he wants a divorce. Deanna, who had dropped out of college with a year to go, decides to go back — at the same college her daughter attends! Isn’t that

CRAZY?! The story continues to be as predictable as a big predictable thing. Deanna is embraced by her daughter’s friends, all members of an appropriately diverse sorority with a way nicer house than sororities ever have. There is a makeover. There is a dance-off where Deanna is (gasp!) much better than expected. Everyone learns to be confident in themselves. (There was not, however, a car wash. I was expecting a car wash.) Melissa McCarthy is very funny — just not in this movie. The scene in “Bridesmaids” with her driving a van full of puppies will never not make me laugh. She was great in “Spy” and the underrated “The Heat.” By God, was she good in “Gilmore Girls.” She’s picked

her share of stinkers, but find me an actor who doesn’t have a “Tammy” in their past (that and “The Boss” were also directed and co-written by Falcone. So … maybe don’t work with him anymore, as awkward as that may make dinnertime conversation). McCarthy is at her best when she’s allowed to commit and commit big. That doesn’t mean mugging for the camera, cinematically nudging the audience to look at how funny she is. It’s about playing a character absolutely seriously so that the humor feels more authentic. In “Life of the Party,” Deanna is an absurd character — would anyone actually wear a college sweater that looks like Liberace got ahold of a double espresso and a BeDazzler and just went to

‘Life of the Party’ (PG-13, 105 min.)

DIRECTOR: Ben Falcone STARS: Melissa McCarthy, Gillian Jacobs, Maya Rudolph, Julie Bowen IN A NUTSHELL: After her husband dumps her, a longtime housewife heads back to college — the very one where ... oh, you know the rest.

town? Granted, McCarthy’s character in “Bridesmaids” was also absurd. But McCarthy played her absolutely straight. Deanna is so poorly written, it’s like McCarthy has to convince the audience that humor is, in fact, happening. In contrast, Maya Rudolph — the actual life of this party — brings authenticity and subtlety to her portrayal of Deanna’s best friend. When she smuggles little bottles of wine to the racquetball court, she doesn’t make a big deal that she’s brought little bottles of wine to the racquetball court. She just holds one, letting the audience find the humor instead of shoving it in their faces. There are a lot of funny women working today, and McCarthy is among the funniest. But like anyone else, for her to rise to the occasion she needs an occasion — and “Life of the Party” isn’t one. A thinly written character and an even thinner plot give McCarthy nothing to work with, so she has nowhere to go but mediocrity. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

WARNER BROS. ENTERTAINMENT

Unrated, 94 min.

This is a funny, candid, sexy and kind of sad chronicle of a woman who dares to demand the companionship and intimacy too often reserved for younger women. Juliette Binoche delivers one of her most subtly calibrated performances, imbuing her character, Isabelle, with the heart and earthy eroticism that makes her more appealing than the pathetic figure she might have been. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Godard Mon Amour’ R, 107 min.

Michel Hazanavicius’ film chronicles the late-’60s love affair between director JeanLuc Godard (Louis Garrel) and his leading lady, Anne Wiazemsky (Stacy Martin). Hazanavicius arguably set out to make a portrait of a woman coming into her own, but he refuses to delve more deeply into the psychology behind the politics of gender, creativity, desire and personal growth. MIKE WINDLE (GETTY IMAGES FOR AMFAR)

There’s no one like Grace Jones FILM Grace Jones isn’t saying that she’s psychic, exactly. It’s just that she can sometimes tell in advance what is going to happen. Like that time she was at a party in Mexico with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, waiting for an elevator. The elevator doors opened, and Jones thought, I’m not getting in there. She had a bad feeling. “And they all got stuck,” she says now, sounding pleased. People have told Jones she should study her psychic abilities to better understand them. “I’m like, ‘Eh, it’s okay.’ You know it when you know it.” Jones spent decades at the epicenter of everything, one of those people who has been famous for so long, it’s easy to forget what she actually does. In the 1970s, she was a supermodelturned-disco-singer. She posed

for Helmut Newton, walked the runways of Paris, hung out with Andy Warhol at Studio 54. She was both stern and provocative, the glamorous embodiment of the hedonism of the decade. In the ’80s, she became an actionmovie star, with a stormy romantic life and a fondness for her bodyguards. More recently, she has released a memoir (“I’ll Never Write My Memoirs,” in 2015) and a documentary, “Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami,” which opens today in D.C. In an era of social media oversharing, even divas can’t be as impenetrable as they used to be. And besides, she’s done everything else. To Jones, time is irrelevant. She sees herself as an entity that has always been and always will be. “I’m already 5,000,” she figures. By more reliable estimates, she will turn 70 next week. “I just

leave it alone. I don’t like to burst anybody’s bubble.” She shrugs. “Some people think I’m a man.” To make “Bloodlight and Bami,” Jones spent a decade submitting to the ministrations of director Sophie Fiennes. The filmmaker had previously made a documentary about Jones’ brother Noel, a preacher. Her cameras followed Jones to

Jamaica, where she was born, and where she reminisced with family members about her fire and brimstone childhood. “I grew up with fear,” she says. “Letting go of fear was the best thing that ever happened to me. Fear of God, fear of hell, fear of fire.” “Bloodlight and Bami” makes an argument for Jones’ role as an artist, not just a provocateur. Her autobiography charts her interior life from her fearful childhood to the not-quite serenity of her present day. “It’s a learning process,” Jones says. “As you grow and pick up things like a rolling tumbleweed or something, you pick up stuff that you can identify and learn with, and you let go of stuff that’s going to hold you back. If you keep fear, you’re never free.” ALLISON STE WART (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Spotify drops R. Kelly music from playlists

Spotify has removed R. Kelly’s music from its playlists and algorithmic recommendations, citing a new policy on hateful conduct, though his tracks remain available elsewhere on the service. The news marks another blow for the R&B singer, who faces allegations he has sexually abused women for decades. “We want our editorial decisions — what we choose to program — to reflect our values,” a Spotify statement said. Gabrielle Union fights to save ‘Breaking In’ FILM REVIEW Happy Mother’s Day, folks, your house is under attack and your kids are being held hostage. Are your “mama bear” instincts up to the task? This is not a bad movie premise, and Gabrielle Union proves more than capable of nailing her Liam Neeson/Bruce Willis moment of save-your-family action stardom — but “Breaking In” has trouble sustaining interest even over its brisk 88 minutes. Directed by James McTeigue (“V for Vendetta”), the movie is basically “Panic Room” in reverse, but less clever and thrilling. In “Breaking In,” Shaun (Union) and her two children are on a weekend trip to her late father’s mansion when four burglars come looking for a safe containing $4 million. Before long, the intruders decide the best course of action is to kidnap the kids and hunt down the mom. A burglar played by Billy Burke often goes back to the refrain that everyone underestimates Shaun. It’s the sort of line that women are supposed to relate to in general, maybe, but you also start to realize that you know nothing about Shaun. Do people underestimate her? Did we? It’s telling about the level of thought put into this story and script, but “Breaking In” is not necessarily trying to live up to those standards. Despite all odds and everything going on around her, Union sells it. Maybe we did underestimate her after all. LINDSEY BAHR (AP)

‘The Predator’

‘Robin Hood’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Sept. 14

EXPECTED RELEASE: Nov. 21

SUMMARY: It’s Halloween in the trailer, but you know it’s not really Halloween because there are no little girls dressed as Elsa. A kid playing with a toy manages to summon an alien spacecraft. The alien turns out to be bad news in the sense that he kills people, so go to your room, kid, and think about what you’ve done. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: It’s been too long since we had a Robin Hood film, so our steal-from-the-rich levels are dangerously low. This time, Robin (Taron Egerton) looks more like the Green Arrow from “Arrow. The trailer does its job: It makes you want to see a movie. Unfortunately, that movie is Disney’s 1973 animated version with the sexy fox. K.P.K.

“If someone can successfully steal a full on ‘Iron Man’ suit and get away with it, then they deserve to keep it.”

Adrian brightens my day. He’s so pleasant and kind. He generously shares his smiles and offers a nice word to all of us.

@SKYLERHXC, tweeting about the news that — yes — someone stole

the original “Iron Man” suit. The costume, which appeared in the 2008 “Iron Man” movie and is worth about $325,000, was apparently stolen from a warehouse in Los Angeles. Fans tweeted their theories on the culprit, and whether it might be Robert Downey Jr. (who plays Iron Man) or the character Deadpool. “It may be nothing, but I think I saw the suit fly past my house,” @CriticalBoomBot tweeted.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Your resistance is not likely to win the results you had hoped for today, so why not join in the fun? What do you have to lose, really? GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may have a run-in today with someone in charge. State your case as clearly as you can, and don’t let yourself be sold a bill of goods. CANCER (June 21-July 22) A certain problem can only be solved today via direct means; any attempt to circumvent it will only make matters worse. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re nearing a significant halfway point — and today the decisions you make are likely to impact your progress for quite some time to come.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You

may find yourself in a situation that demands of you more circumspection than usual. You don’t want to say something you’ll regret.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You have access to information that can make the difference between success and failure today — depending on how you use it, of course. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You may feel that things are going downhill in some way, but you can do much to keep any permanent decline from happening. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

1502: Christopher Columbus leaves Cadiz, Spain, on his fourth and final trip to the Western Hemisphere.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Hesitation today isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it depends on the reasons for it. You may have to do some soul-searching.

1858: Minnesota becomes the 32nd state of the Union.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You are at that point in a certain endeavor at which it may be best to hand over the reins to someone else for a while. Try to be objective. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may be called upon to lend a hand today; do so without complaint, as you’ll likely find that you are able to make a difference. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You are putting so much creative energy into one single endeavor, perhaps, that you are unable to give others the time they really deserve.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
