Questions, stickers and ‘Obliteration’

A museum visitor adds her stickers to a wall of the “Obliteration Room” in the Yayoi Kusama exhibit. Just don’t try taking any of them out with you.

An older man sticks a big dot on my Hirshhorn volunteer T-shirt. “They said anywhere!” he says. An older woman walks out saying, “Tee-hee, that was fun.” Another says the experience took her back to kindergarten. Around closing time on one shift, an impromptu concert breaks out on the piano. The entire room gathers around a man playing with wild hand gestures. Applause erupts as he ends his set by slamming the

keys dramatically, an expression of sheer joy on his face. Toward the end of the day, visitors tend to get testy, as do the volunteers. One particularly strong personality walks right past me as I start my spiel. Others are agitated, asking, “What are these stickers for?” The stony guard steps in and puts it the most elegant way I’ve heard: “The room is your playground.” ELIZABETH HART (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

EXHIBITS “What am I supposed to do with this?” “You mean we can put them on the walls? Anywhere?” “Is this a souvenir?” For 10 weeks as a volunteer at the Hirshhorn Museum’s Yayoi Kusama “Infinity Mirrors” exhibition, I have faced these questions, and more, from puzzled visitors. And sometimes they’ve gotten the best of me. Record crowds have come from far and wide to see six of the Japanese artist’s mirror rooms, and her “Obliteration Room,” the last stop in the show, which closes Sunday. The room looks as if it were designed for a classic Scandinavian home, furnished by Ikea with a

dining table, a couch and TV, an office desk — even a piano — all painted stark white. When the exhibition opened in February, the room was a clean slate, waiting to be covered, or “obliterated,” with up to 750,000 stickers. I am the sticker distributor. One sheet of multicolor, multisize circles per person. No, you can’t take them with you. Yes, you must use them all in the room. My partner in crime is a stonefaced security guard. I hand out the sticker sheets and tell everyone that this is the last room in the exhibition. For crowd (and sticker) control, they’re not allowed to return to the rest of the show once they’ve entered. I and a hundred other volunteers have been trained to answer questions and direct crowds. Repeating the same spiel over and over has been tiring at times, but worth it for the moments of delight and surprise from visitors.

Md. regulators OK nation’s largest offshore wind plan

Federal prosecutors join racism investigation at AU

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser says she doesn’t believe city officials did anything wrong when they asked for their children to be placed in out-ofboundary schools. A recent report by D.C.’s inspector general found that former schools chancellor Kaya Henderson improperly transferred the children of three city officials. Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser said Thursday that the officials followed the same process that all residents can follow to request a transfer. She says that process is not “tight enough” and that changes will be made. One of the officials has been identified as a deputy mayor, Courtney Snowden. (AP)

Maryland regulators on Thursday approved plans for the nation’s first large-scale offshore wind projects, saying the decision will position the state to be a leader in the developing industry. The Maryland Public Service Commission awarded renewable energy credits for two projects off Maryland’s Eastern Shore near Ocean City. The PSC says the decision allows US Wind of Baltimore and Skipjack Offshore Energy, a subsidiary of Deepwater Wind, to build a total of 368 megawatts of capacity. Those projects significantly outrank by size the nation’s sole offshore wind farm, known as Block Island, off Rhode Island. (AP)

Federal prosecutors have joined an investigation of a racist incident on the campus of American University. Last week, someone hung bananas with racist messages from nooses at several locations around the campus. The bananas were found shortly after Taylor Dumpson became the first black woman to serve as AU’s student body president. AU president Neil Kerwin revealed in a letter to students and staff on Wednesday that the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia is now involved in the probe. The FBI had already been assisting campus police in the investigation. So far, no arrests have been made. (AP)

ANNAPOLIS FBI agents raided the office of a Republican consulting firm in Maryland on Thursday in connection with an investigation into the 2013 Virginia governor’s race. The FBI confirmed it served a search warrant in Annapolis, but declined to elaborate. Kelley Rogers, president of Strategic Campaign Group, told reporters the investigation relates to work the consultant did for former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the GOP’s 2013 gubernatorial candidate. Rogers told reporters that his firm settled a lawsuit brought by the Cuccinelli campaign after he lost the governor’s race to Democrat Terry McAuliffe. Rogers said the investigation

appears to have stemmed from allegations in that lawsuit. Cuccinelli sued Strategic Campaign Group in 2014, alleging that the company and a political action committee duped donors. Cuccinelli said the Conservative StrikeForce PAC raised $2.2 million in 2013, largely by promising donors the money would help Cuccinelli in his ultimately unsuccessful Virginia campaign against McAuliffe. The PAC only gave $10,000 to Cuccinelli’s campaign, which was heavily outspent by McAuliffe. Cuccinelli’s lawsuit described the StrikeForce PAC as being “controlled by” Strategic Campaign Group. Several political campaigns in recent years have complained of so-called “scam PACs” that purportedly raise money to help a political campaign, but instead enrich consultants and others with the bulk of the funds. nation+world Bipartisan deal reached to make it easier for agency to fire workers POLITICS Congressional Republicans and Democrats have reached agreement on a long-stalled bill to make it easier for the Department of Veterans Affairs to fire its employees, part of an accountability effort touted by President Trump. Announced Thursday, the deal could smooth the way for final passage on an issue that had been in limbo since the 2014 wait-time scandal at the Phoenix VA medical center. As many as 40 veterans died while waiting months for appointments as VA employees created secret waiting lists and other

falsehoods to cover up delays. The bipartisan deal on Capitol Hill followed a fresh warning from the VA inspector general of continuing patient safety problems at another facility, the VA medical center in Washington, D.C. After uncovering serious problems there last month, the IG’s “rapid response” team visited the facility again Wednesday and found at least two new instances in which patients were “placed at unnecessary risk.” In one case, they found a patient prepped for surgery in an operating room, under anesthesia, whose surgery was postponed because “the surgeon did not have a particular sterile instrument necessary to perform the surgery.” The team also found “surgical instruments

that had color stains of unknown origin in sterile packs,” according to the IG’s letter sent to the VA. The VA last month had provided

assurances of immediate action to fix problems. VA Secretary David Shulkin told senators he had no concerns about patient safety and that the auditors’ visit revealed a process “that works” — doctors stopping a procedure when they identified a potential risk. But Shulkin agreed legislation was needed to help improve the VA. “In the cases we need to make changes in management, today I just don’t have that ability to do it,” he said. The Senate measure softens portions of a bill that had passed the House in March, which Democrats criticized as unfairly harsh on workers. Modifications to the bill would in part give VA employees added time to appeal disciplinary actions. HOPE YEN (AP)

Somali president calls for international arms embargo to be lifted to defeat al-Shabab extremists

SALT LAKE CITY The Mormon church, the biggest sponsor of Boy Scout troops in the U.S., announced Thursday it is pulling as many as 185,000 older youngsters from the organization as part of an effort to start its own scouting-like program. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said the move wasn’t triggered by the Boy Scouts of America’s decision in 2015 to allow gay troop leaders. The church initially said it was “deeply troubled” by the policy change on gays but stayed with the organization after receiving assurances it could appoint troop leaders according to its own religious and moral values. Instead, the church said it wanted a new, simplified program more closely tailored to Mormon teenagers. Boys ages 14 to 18 will no longer be in Boy Scouts starting next year, the church said. The Boy Scouts said the decision will affect 130,000 teens; the church put the number at 185,000. About 280,000 Mormon boys ages 8 to 13 will remain in the Scouts while the church continues to develop its own program, the Mormons said. The Boy Scouts put the number at 330,000. The loss is only a fraction of the 2.3 million youths in Boy Scouts, but the organization has enjoyed an unusually close bond with the Mormon church for more than a century. Joining the Boy Scouts is practically automatic among Mormon boys. BRADY M C COMBS (AP)

or cast their ballot. “The sole purpose of this commission is to propagate a myth and to give encouragement to Republican governors and state legislators to increase voter suppression,” Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders said. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said it was a “clear front for constricting the access to vote to poor Americans, older Americans and — above all — AfricanAmericans and Latinos.” White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the commission would be bipartisan and composed of about a dozen members, including current and former state election officials and experts.

The panel will aim to ensure confidence in the integrity of federal elections while looking at vulnerabilities in the system and the possibility of improper voting and fraudulent voter registration and voting, officials said. The commission will include two Republicans — former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell and Indiana Secretary of State Connie Lawson — and two Democrats, New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner and Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap. Christy McCormick, a former Justice Department attorney and a member of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, will also be on the panel, and others will be named soon.

Australian quarantine authorities on Thursday urged travelers through Asia to avoid bringing in hitchhiking amphibians, after a passenger arrived at an airport with a dead Indonesian black-spined toad in his shoe. The Department of Agriculture and Water Resources warned travelers to check their belongings — particularly shoes — for biohazards after toads from Thailand and Indonesia were found recently at three Australian airports. Authorities are confident that passengers were unaware they were carrying toads. The blackspined toad could damage the Australian environment and could carry exotic parasites or diseases. (AP)

POLITICS President Trump signed an executive order Thursday launching a commission to review alleged voter fraud and voter suppression, building upon his unsubstantiated claims that millions of people voted illegally in the 2016 election. The “Advisory Commission on Election Integrity” would examine allegations of improper voting and fraudulent voter registration in states and across the nation. Vice President Mike Pence will chair the panel and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach will be vice chair of the commission, which will report back to Trump by 2018. Trump has alleged, without evidence, that 3 million to 5 million people voted illegally in his 2016 win over Democrat Hillary Clinton. He has vowed since the start of his administration to investigate voter fraud, a process that has been delayed for months. Democrats and voting rights groups called the panel a sham, arguing there are few, if any, credible allegations of significant voter fraud. They warned that the panel would be used to lay the groundwork for stricter voting requirements that could make it more difficult for poor and minority voters to register

It is when you’re Ruslan Sokolovsky, a 22-year-old atheist blogger who received a suspended sentence of 3½ years Thursday after posting a video of himself playing Pokémon Go in Russia’s renowned Church of All Saints cathedral. A judge in Yekaterinburg, Russia, said that Sokolovsky had insulted the feelings of Christians and Muslims by “attributing to Jesus Christ the qualities of a reanimated zombie.” In August, Sokolovsky posted a profanity-laced YouTube video of himself playing Pokémon Go at the cathedral, which is built on the site where Czar Nicholas II and his family were executed by the Bolsheviks in 1918. McCabe: ‘No effort to impede’ NATIONAL SECURITY Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe vowed Thursday that he would tell the Senate Intelligence Committee if the White House tried to interfere with the bureau’s probe of possible coordination between the Kremlin and the Trump campaign to influence the 2016 presidential election — though he asserted that there had “been no effort to impede our investigation to date.” McCabe made the statements at a public hearing with top U.S. intelligence officials before the Senate Intelligence Committee — a hearing that has taken on new significance since Trump suddenly removed James Comey from the FBI’s top post. McCabe also said he would not provide updates to President Trump or anyone else in the White House about the status of the probe, nor had anyone yet asked. As the hearing was underway, Sens. Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Mark Warner, D-Va., the committee leaders, suddenly stepped out

to meet privately with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who drafted the memo that Trump used as a rationale to fire Comey. Burr said they had requested the meeting before Comey’s departure to discuss how to “deconflict” their own probe from that of the FBI. Warner said afterward that the session was productive but that he still has concerns. McCabe appeared in place of Comey, and Warner, the committee vice chairman, asked him at the outset if he would commit to informing the committee if the White House tried to meddle in the Russia investigation. “I absolutely do,” McCabe responded. McCabe went on to make several assertions that might irk Trump. He forcefully defended his former boss — who Trump had said “was not doing a good job” — declaring that working with Comey was “the greatest privilege and honor of my professional life.” He said his view was widely shared in the agency. “The vast majority of FBI employees enjoyed a deep and positive connection to Director Comey,” McCabe said.

‘He’s a showboat’ In interview, Trump says he was going to fire Comey ‘regardless of recommendation’

Comey uproar distracts GOP from agenda

GETTY IMAGES

POLITICS President Trump said FBI Director James Comey told him three times he was not under investigation — once at a White House dinner when Comey was seeking to remain in his post and in two phone calls, including one initiated by the president, according to an interview with NBC News. “I said, ‘If it’s possible, would you let me know am I under investigation?’ He said, ‘You are not under investigation,’ ’’ Trump said. In the interview, Trump made clear it was his idea to dismiss the FBI director earlier this week. Trump fired Comey on Tuesday, after receiving a memorandum from the deputy attorney general criticizing Comey’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation. “Regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Comey,’’ Trump said, directly contradicting White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s comments this week emphasizing that Trump’s decision stemmed from a memo and recommendation from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The president offered more details of an assertion he made in a letter dismissing the FBI director earlier this week, in which he described the director giving him assurances he was not being investigated. Trump said Comey came to eat dinner with him at the White House. “I think he asked for the dinner. … And he wanted to stay at the FBI, and I said, I’ll, you know, consider and see what happens. … But we had a very nice dinner, and at that time he told me, ‘You are not under investigation.’ ’’ The exchange as described by

Trump said former FBI Director James Comey, right, told him in three instances that he was not under investigation.

the president is remarkable since he said the FBI director was discussing an ongoing investigation with the president — something Justice Department policy generally prohibits — at the same time Comey was seeking assurances he would remain in his job. FBI directors are appointed for 10-year terms, and Comey had been on the job less than four years. A president may fire an FBI director at any time for any reason, but it is very rare to do so because of the potential political blowback if the White House is perceived to be interfering with federal law enforcement work. Comey’s temporary replacement, Andrew McCabe, was asked at a Senate hearing Thursday morning about talks between the FBI director and the president, and McCabe would not discuss it. McCabe also denied that he had ever discussed the Russia investigation with anyone at the White House.

Trump tweets at Rosie President Trump tweeted Thursday at actor/TV personality Rosie O’Donnell as he defended his decision to fire FBI Director James Comey. He retweeted a December post from O’Donnell that read “FIRE COMEY.” He replied: “We finally agree on something Rosie.” Trump and O’Donnell have publicly feuded in the past, with Trump making comments about her looks. (AP)

The memo from Rosenstein said Comey’s public comments about the Hillary Clinton email investigation — a case in which no charges were filed — hurt the reputation of the FBI and affected the Justice Department. The Rosenstein memo did not mention the ongoing Russia investigation involving Trump associates. Officials have said the president’s dissatisfaction with Comey had been building for months.

Brazil declares end to public health emergency for Zika virus after fall in number of cases

Trump administration officials have pressed the FBI to more vigorously pursue leaks and to help them rebut accusations related to the ongoing Russia probe, these officials said. In the NBC interview, Trump said he fired Comey because he had mismanaged the FBI and was an attention-seeker: “Look, he’s a showboat, he’s a grandstander,” the president said. “The FBI has been in turmoil. You know that. I know that. Everybody knows that. You take a look at the FBI a year ago, it was in virtual turmoil, less than a year ago. It hasn’t recovered from that.” Trump’s comments seemed to refer to a period shortly before the election when law enforcement officials described growing internal dissent within the FBI, principally over Comey’s handling of Clinton-related investigations, and his public comments about the case. DEVLIN BARRETT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS The furor over President Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey threatened on Thursday to overshadow the GOP’s legislative agenda on health care, tax reform and other issues. Add in a potentially contentious confirmation battle over the next director, and the Republicans’ already difficult task of getting major bills on Trump’s desk just got harder. Even though no Democratic votes will be needed to confirm the next FBI director, since it will take a simple majority vote, the fight is certain to be heated. “We’re not going to be voting on a director of the FBI I wouldn’t think for quite a while,” said Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., above. One name floated to be the next FBI director was D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Chief Judge Merrick Garland. He was former President Barack Obama’s nominee to the Supreme Court last year but never got a hearing. Other mentioned names included former GOP Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, and former Judge Mike Luttig of the Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, now general counsel at Boeing. Many lawmakers are focused on the FBI and Trump, even as senators tried to craft legislation to replace the Affordable Care Act. If Congress can’t finalize health care legislation, the ability to enact tax reform will get all the more difficult. This in turn could put a drag on the economy. ERICA WERNER (AP)

After another playoff exit, Braden Holtby and the Caps can expect plenty of roster turnover.

PAINFUL ENDING

Change is coming to D.C. Expiring contracts and salary cap constraints will force roster upheaval for the Caps NHL In an interview before the playoffs, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said he wanted to see how his team performed in the postseason before considering offseason decisions. “The time is now,” he said, “and we’ll deal with the rest of it later.” After another second-round exit, “later” arrived sooner than anyone in the Capitals’ organization hoped. Now, with roughly half the roster in need of a new contract and an expansion draft looming, MacLellan has a busy offseason ahead. With just three unrestricted free agents coming off the books last summer, there wasn’t much flexibility — or desire — to upend the roster. Now, change is unavoidable, and it’s possible MacLellan will go in an entirely new direction after this group of players twice failed to advance to at least the conference finals With key young players due pay

raises and Washington already facing salary cap constraints, the team may not be able to resign any of its five pending unrestricted free agents — Kevin Shattenkirk, T.J. Oshie, Justin Williams, Daniel Winnik and Karl Alzner. The Capitals seem to have the most interest in bringing back Oshie, 30, who scored a careerhigh 33 goals this season. But unless Washington moves salary, it seems unlikely they can afford to give him what he could get on the open market. Last summer, Kyle Okposo, then 28, signed a seven-year, $42 million contract with the Sabres, and he was coming off a 22-goal season. David Backes was 32 when he signed his five-year, $30 million contract with the Bruins, and his last 30-plus-goal season was 2010-11. Center Evgeny Kuznetsov seems poised to receive a longterm deal in restricted free agency, while forward Andre Burakovsky will likely get a

Is it time to trade Ovi? After Washington failed to reach the third round of the playoffs for the ninth time in nine postseason appearances during the Alex Ovechkin era, some pundits seem to think that major changes are needed. ESPN’s Barry Melrose said on “SportsCenter” that with the salary cap and no-movement clauses, big deals are almost impossible, but the Capitals should consider trading Ovechkin. “I think it’s to that point, and for his sake,” Melrose said, adding that Ovechkin, 31, “isn’t getting the job done” and “can’t win in Washington.” NBCSN’s Mike Milbury said it’s time for the Caps to “rethink their whole philosophy … What to do with Ovechkin, what to do with [Nicklas] Backstrom, what to do with everybody.” (TWP)

shorter bridge contract with less money. Defensemen Dmitry Orlov and Nate Schmidt are also due pay raises, and with the expected

departure of Alzner, both could factor into the team’s top four next season. Forward Brett Connolly, who scored 15 goals, is also a restricted free agent, but his future in Washington is unclear after he was a healthy scratch in the second round of the playoffs. The expansion draft for the Golden Knights further complicates MacLellan’s job. Vegas gets to pick one player from all 30 clubs. Expect the Caps to protect seven forwards, three defensemen and one goalie. Philipp Grubauer, who’s been an impressive backup to Braden Holtby, could be scooped up after he posted a .926 save percentage and 2.05 goals against average in 24 appearances. But assuming Washington protects John Carlson, Matt Niskanen and Orlov on its blue line, the team has reason to be concerned that Nate Schmidt, the best skater among their defensemen, could appeal to Vegas. Ovechkin played hurt in playoffs Capitals star Alex Ovechkin finished the playoffs playing through a lower-body injury that required pain-numbing injections. The Russian Hockey Federation announced the injury Thursday, saying Ovechkin would not be able to play at the world championships in Europe because of it. It was not immediately clear when Ovechkin was injured or how severely. He did not miss a game but briefly left late in the first period of Game 5 in the first round after clutching his knee following a hit from Toronto’s Nazem Kadri, returning for the start of the second. Coach Barry Trotz moved Ovechkin to the third line midway through the second round against Pittsburgh. (AP)

Wizards look to extend series at Verizon Center after Garden struggles

MADDIE MEYER (GETTY IMAGES)

NBA PLAYOFFS Leave it to Markieff Morris to explain this Eastern Conference matchup between the Wizards and Celtics, a series lacking symmetry and any trace of predictability. “They beat our [butts],” Morris said following the Celtics’ 123-101 drubbing of the Wizards in Game 5 on Wednesday. “We just beat they [butts] two times in a row.” Morris was referring to the 27- and 19-point margins by which the Wizards easily handled Boston in Games 3 and 4 inside Verizon Center. However, in the three games the Celtics have worn their home whites, they’ve won by an average of 14.6 points. Entering Game 6 on Friday night in Washington, Boston owns a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven playoff series. After five games of wild pendulum swings, one conclusion can be drawn: there’s no place like home. “Everybody plays well at home,” Bradley Beal said. “We’ve got to take advantage of it. Think of it as a positive and forget about this game, move on. Get a win and hopefully come back here.” The Wizards have only one road win in the playoffs — but it was also the most important one. Washington closed out the Hawks in the first round with a

Game 6 win in Atlanta. And at the start of the Boston series, Washington has at times looked to be the stronger team. Even during the road losses in Games 1 and 2, the Wizards went on runs of 16-0 and 14-0. Any time an enemy team can play well inside the raucous TD Garden, it should mean something. On Wednesday night, however, the Wizards didn’t come close to reaching their potential from the earlier games. Their opening run ended at 4-0. Then Boston leaked out on fast breaks, rifled in 3-pointers and never trailed again. “We didn’t have the right

their home court and compiling a streak that extended to 17 consecutive wins at Verizon Center. But it must be noted that the team’s past two playoff appearances — in which current starters Beal, John Wall and Marcin Gortat made up the core — Washington lost elimination games at home. Ahead of Game 6 on Friday night, Beal admitted those memories will factor into the Wizards’ motivation. “Strongly,” Beal said. “We’ve all been there before. It’s no more bitter feeling than that, losing at home and getting knocked [out] at that, too. So the biggest thing is having that same mentality, that feeling, man, and just never forgetting about it.” Late Wednesday night inside the visitor’s locker room, the Morris-inspired team nickname lived on as young role players Daniel Ochefu and Chris McCullough wore “Deathrow DC” T-shirts under their suit jackets. After taking a 22-point loss, however, the Wizards’ season now faces an execution. The menacing nickname and coordinated T-shirts won’t seem so out of place back in Washington, and with the threat of elimination looming, Beal clung to the comforts of home. “We were disappointed in how we played. We kind of beat ourselves a little bit, but credit to them, they won,” Beal said. “I think we’ll definitely have a better focus, better intensity next game.” CANDACE BUCKNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Gordon, 26, can reapply in the fall. He led the league in receiving in 2013 but has struggled with problems that resulted in four suspensions. He was suspended for 10 games in 2014 and for the entire 2015 season for substance-policy violations. Commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally reinstated Gordon last season, but he was suspended for the first four games. When that suspension expired, he entered a rehab facility and did not play all year. The Browns own his rights. (TWP) WNBA

Now hitting cleanup, call him ‘Little Papi’ MLB Andrew Benintendi is, by the most obvious measures, a fraction of the ballplayer and presence that David Ortiz was. Ortiz, Boston’s burly designated hitter, famously retired last year after 2,408 games and 541 home runs. When Benintendi, an outfielder who stands 5 feet 10 and 170 pounds, came to the plate in the first inning at Miller Park on Wednesday night, it marked his 66th big league game. And yet, when the Red Sox, mired in a month-long offensive funk, made a major lineup change last weekend, they didn’t hesitate to hand over the cleanup spot — filled for much of the previous four seasons by Ortiz — to the youngster Benintendi, 22. In his first four games in the four hole, he went 8-for-18 with three doubles, a homer, four walks and six RBIs. His season slash line is an Ortizian .316/.380/.481. On Sunday, the Twins walked him intentionally to pitch to Hanley Ramirez. It can’t be long until Benintendi starts going by “Little Papi,” right? Asked if it was difficult to put a 22-year-old who was in Class A just 12 months ago into

Boston’s Benintendi succeeds Ortiz with big bat in the four hole

Boston’s answer for a slumping offense was to put Andrew Benintendi, 22, in the cleanup spot vacated by legendary designated hitter David Ortiz.

the cleanup spot of a team with World Series aspirations, Red Sox manager John Farrell explained Benintendi is simply different. “You ask yourself, ‘Is the player telling you through his actions that he’s ready for more?’ ” Farrell said. “In his case, it was yes.” The other component of the Red Sox’s shake-up was Mookie Betts’ move from third to leadoff, where he blasted a three-run, ninth-inning homer in Boston’s 4-1 win at Milwaukee on Thursday. Before the moves, they were averaging just 3.8 runs per game, the fourth-worst offense in the game and a run and a half below their MLB-leading 2016 production. They scored 11 runs in their first game with the reconfigured

lineup, then 17 the next game. The Red Sox opened themselves up to scrutiny this offseason by focusing on run prevention — trading four prospects to the White Sox for ace Chris Sale, and adding Gold Glove first baseman Mitch Moreland — while doing next to nothing to replace Ortiz’s bat. Benintendi, formerly the top-rated prospect in baseball, is now leading the team in hits (42), home runs (5) and RBIs (22). Maybe Benintendi can’t replicate Ortiz’s production, let alone his massive presence, but through the first five weeks of 2017, he has done a serviceable impression. Different Ways to Save on Cable M

Photo: Joshua Blount via Flickr Creative Commons

oving to an apartment can be exciting, especially if you’ve never lived in one before. Sometimes living in an apartment can be great in that you don’t have to worry too much about upkeep. While you don’t own the property, you also aren’t responsible for it. Whether you need to worry about rent costs or if you’re simply looking to be frugal, paying for cable service every month can become troublesome. No worries, though, as some of these tips are sure to help. Here are five ways you can save on cable when moving in to your first apartment:

TV shows available to watch. Starting at only $8 per month, Netflix is one of the most affordable alternatives to cable. For $10 per month, you can watch in HD and on more than one device at a time. Best of all, the first month is free for new users and Netflix has original series you can’t watch elsewhere (most of them are excellent). The only unfortunate thing is that you may not be able to access everything Netflix has to offer unless you use a Virtual Private Network (Secure Thoughts has a guide) depending on the country or region you’re living.

Shop Around

Sling

The first thing you should do is check the differences between the cable providers that service your area. It could be that a monthly cable subscription can actually fit into your budget if you just find the right one. Some cable providers charge more for fewer channels and sometimes satellite is cheaper than cable, but only you know what will work best for your needs and budgets.

If cable is out of the question, you can definitely save some money by subscribing to Sling instead. Sling allows you to watch live television wherever you go, even on your mobile devices. Starting at $20 per month, you can enjoy HD TV broadcasting on a variety of devices (Fire Stick, Chromecast, Roku, and more). The channel lineup is quite limited (there are only about 28 channels available on their $20 plan), but there are additional options. It’s especially great for those who only watch a few channels on a regular

Netflix You’ve probably already heard of Netflix before, as it has a ton of great movies and

basis. Looking for a free version similar to Sling? Try Pluto TV.

Roku Roku is a streaming media player that allows you to access some of your favorite streaming services or watch some of your favorite channels right on your TV. Certain channels and apps are free with the purchase of a Roku device (the device itself ranges in price greatly). You can also rent or purchase movies and TV series on Roku if you choose, allowing you to watch more of what you want whenever you want.

Hulu Hulu is very similar to Netflix, but offers some new episodes of TV shows the day after they premiere on cable. Additionally, their library differs a bit from Netflix. The downside is that their lowest priced plan isn’t commercial free, but they do still offer new users one month free. Hulu costs between $8 and $12 per month, so it’s definitely a worthwhile option that can save you money. n By Guest Blogger for Apartment Showcase

Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn stumble into Jeff Goldblum on the set of “Jurassic World 2.”

ALSO OPENING

‘The Wall’

An imperfect getaway The small moments rescue Schumer and Hawn’s slight but funny ‘Snatched’ FILM REVIEW The message of “Snatched” is clear: Do not get abducted with your mom, because she will still find a way to criticize your shoes. The plot of “Snatched” is also clear, to the point of simplicity. Emily (Amy Schumer) has found herself abandoned by her boyfriend and in possession of the nonrefundable tickets to Ecuador the couple bought before he dumped her. Having alienated all of her friends, she decides to take her mom, Linda (Goldie Hawn). The two head off to South America, where Emily meets an impossibly handsome man (Tom

Bateman), who hands the vacationers over to some generically mean kidnappers who intend to hold them for ransom. Director Jonathan Levine (“The Night Before”) wrings a fairly funny romp out of what could have been a wet towel of a movie. When the actors are allowed to riff — particularly Schumer and Ike Barinholtz, as her agoraphobic brother — “Snatched” sparks with quick wit. The film shines brightest in its small moments. Minor characters like a mute former military commando (Joan Cusack) and a delusional guide

‘Snatched’ (R, 90 min.) DIRECTOR: Jonathan Levine STARS: Amy Schumer, Goldie Hawn,

Joan Cusack, Ike Barinholtz IN A NUTSHELL: An impetuous dreamer and her cautious mom have to work through their differences to survive a jungle adventure.

(Christopher Meloni) provide major laughs. And the script by Katie Dippold (a co-writer of the “Ghostbusters” reboot) has biting moments that point out Emily’s cultural insensitivity, and mock the very concept of taking a vacation to a foreign country explicitly to hang out at a fancy resort with other Americans.

For some, Schumer is an acquired taste they have no plans of acquiring, and Emily is basically a variation of the versions of the comedian we’ve seen on “Inside Amy Schumer,” in her stand-up and in “Trainwreck.” Hawn, last seen in 2002’s “The Banger Sisters,” proves she can still pull her comedic weight, taking on a role that’s more grounded than the ditzy personas she’s known for. It might make a nice treat to see “Snatched” with your mom this Mother’s Day weekend; moms who won’t cringe at the sound of F-bombs falling or an extended scene involving a tapeworm will probably have a nice time. Just stand up straight. And are you really planning on wearing those shoes? KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

TELEVISION

‘The Voice’ poaches two ‘Idol’ alums

Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson will each take a turn in the red spinning chairs on “The Voice.” NBC has announced that former “American Idol” contestant Hudson will join fellow coaches Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Miley Cyrus for the fall season of the reality singing competition. Variety, meanwhile, reports that Clarkson, who won “Idol” in 2002, will join Shelton and Levine for the show’s spring cycle in 2018. (AP/EXPRESS)

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” hits $500 million at the global box office

20TH CENTURY FOX

R, 81 min.

The two-man show in “The Wall” — which features Aaron Taylor-Johnson as a U.S. soldier pinned down by an Iraqi sniper behind a crumbling wall and John Cena as his injured superior officer — doesn’t sound like it has room for innovation. Yet the film defies conventional thinking about war-movie endings, and raises questions about the purpose of this conflict — and also about war in general. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’ PG-13, 126 min.

“King Arthur’s” plot is much like the one we know: Arthur (Charlie Hunnam), orphaned by his father’s evil brother Vortigern (Jude Law), fulfills his birthright by pulling his father’s sword from a stone. Taking a page from Marvel, it’s a fun first step in franchise creation — one that observes the first commandment of storytelling: Thou shalt not be boring. M.O.

Seniority rules: A couple gets it on while getting on Mary and Michael’s separate phones have led to mostly separate lives. “The Lovers,” out today, takes a clear-eyed look at what a modern, long-term marriage might look like. Mary and Michael’s (Debra Winger and Tracy Letts) son has left for college, and they’ve filled the void he left by working late and texting their respective bits on the side. Director and writer Azazel Jacobs presents Mary and Michael’s marriage with neither

compassion nor judgment. It just is what it is. And it’s easy to imagine how they got where they are: The stress and mundanity that is packing lunches and driving to soccer practice and getting to work and running the dishwasher and seriously, am I the only one around here who knows how to use a vacuum? meant their marriage slowly became about surviving life, not living it. Their situation is nothing special on screen: Long-term movie marriages are often loveless, sexless trudges toward the nursing home. But then. He comes home

one night; she’s watching TV and drinking wine. There is a halting conversation. He asks about her wine. “Do … do you want some?” she asks. He pauses, then says he does. He gets a glass. They watch TV together. The next morning, seemingly out of nowhere, they have sex. Then they start having a lot of sex (like, a LOT). They have enthusiastic, passionate, loud sex (like, REALLY loud). And Jacobs shows it all — explicitly — with the same objectivity he applied to their dead marriage. Which is, to say the least, surprising. People in the movies who are over, say, 50 (Winger is nearly 62 and Letts is 10 years younger, which makes their coupling even RARER) have very specific roles to fill. They are kooky moms and stodgy dads, satellites of the young stars at the center of the movie universe. They are not, with very few exceptions, sexual — and if they are, it’s played

for laughs. Jacobs shows what a sexual relationship looks like when, as the saying goes, there’s snow on the roof but a fire inside. “The Lovers” also really nails (heh) how good sex can be because you’re in a longterm relationship, not in spite of it. When Mary and Michael reconnect, they do so easily because they’re already connected: He knows the spot on her neck she likes kissed and she knows not to mess with his ears. “The Lovers” is partly a celebration of what happens to sex when you can stop worrying about holding your stomach in. So, if you see yourself and your partner in Mary and Michael, lay down the phone, put on a nice shirt and see “The Lovers.” It’s a good date night movie — particularly for couples who have forgotten to keep dating. Welcome to the golden age of TV musicals

NBC is adding another live musical to its slate. The network said Wednesday that it will air the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” on Easter Sunday 2018. NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt says casting is just getting started, and the aim is to tap as many as recording artists as possible to give “proper voice” to the score. NBC already has plans for a “Bye Bye Birdie” live production, starring Jennifer Lopez, in December. (AP)

The CW to reboot 1980s TV drama “Dynasty” for 2017-18 season

FILM REVIEW Despite having a girl’s body, Ray has lived as a boy for years, and testosterone therapy represents, for him, the beginning of the end to his gender dysphoria. The dramatic comedy “3 Generations” follows Ray and his family through the complications of this decision, which could have made for an affecting, modern coming-of-age drama, except the film shifts focus to Ray’s mother instead. The cumulative effect is closer to an after-school special for troubled parents. Elle Fanning convincingly plays Ray, in performance and appearance, wearing clothes in a bigger size to hide anatomy and conveying the mannerisms of an adolescent who is arrogant and vulnerable. Naomi Watts is Ray’s mother, Maggie. Since Ray is a minor, both parents must give consent for the hormone procedure, so Maggie seeks out Ray’s estranged father. Then there’s Ray’s lesbian grandmother, Dolly (Susan Sarandon), who is less certain that Ray is ready for so irrevocable a decision. The film’s problems arise when Maggie visits Ray’s father (Tate Donovan). The dramatic dialogue is reserved for Maggie, as “3 Generations” turns its focus away from its original subject. A deeper exploration of Ray’s life — a life acutely felt and ultimately triumphant — would have been far more rewarding than the film we got. ALAN ZILBERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Blade Runner 2049’

‘47 Meters Down’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Oct. 6

EXPECTED RELEASE: June 16

SUMMARY: It’s 2049 in this sequel to the 1982 sci-fi classic, and Creepy Jared Leto is being creepy and creating humans — we think? But no worries — Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford (reprising his role as futuristic cop Rick Deckard) are here to save us. And we can always trust Harrison Ford to make it out of a movie alive, right? KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: It’s a whole combination of nightmares when vacationing sisters (Mandy Moore and Claire Holt) demonstrate that they don’t have the sense God gave a duck and go on a sketchy dive in a shark cage. The cage gets dropped, they end up way underwater, the oxygen is getting low and the sharks are getting hungry. K.P.K.

DIFFICULT

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Old drafts for Steve’s dating profile leak A memo Steve Harvey sent to his talk show staff with a list of “notes and rules” leaked on Wednesday. Part of it read: “Do not approach me while I’m in the makeup chair unless I ask to speak with you. … I promise you I will not entertain you in the hallway, and do not attempt to walk with me. If you’re reading this, yes, I mean you.” Harvey told Entertainment Tonight on Thursday that he stands by what he wrote. (EXPRESS)

In the midst of Johnny Depp’s ongoing legal battle with The Management Group, his former business advisers, over the actor’s financial trouble, The Hollywood Reporter published a story detailing some of his alleged purchases. They include: $400,000 on a diamond cuff; $3.6 million a year on his 40-person staff; $10 million on a yacht and $350,000 per month to maintain it (author J.K. Rowling bought it from Depp and later sold it); a collective $565,000 on three Leonor Fini paintings; $5.35 million on a threeisland property in the Bahamas; and $75 million on buying and renovating his 14 residences. Depp reportedly spent about $2 million a month. (EXPRESS)

Gisele Bundchen shared on “The Tonight Show” that she and husband Tom Brady keep bringing home puppies — recently a small dog, Fluffy, and before that, a beagle, Scooby Doo. “I told my husband, I’m like, ‘Look, there’s a puppy coming tomorrow,’ ” she said. “He was like, ‘What do you mean?’ And I’m like, ‘Well, you got a beagle!’ … So he’s done it to me, so it’s even.” (EXPRESS)

Kate Hudson and Demi Lovato are working on a fashion line collaboration with Fabletics, the activewear brand Hudson co-founded in 2013. Hudson told The Associated Press she instantly hit it off with the “Confident” singer when the two ran into each other at the gym. The collection includes leggings in pink and yellow flowered prints, black-and-white shorts and a tank with “CONFIDENT” in capital letters at the bottom. (AP)
