Danger stalks British diplomat even in a nature park in Vienna
Frenchman getting the lobster seems to be winning on this deal
Why was a camel roaming an old Confederate mansion?
Some situations leave even a seasoned diplomat unprepared. Leigh Turner, Britain’s ambassador to Austria, was left shaken and slightly hurt after being chased recently by a wild boar in a Vienna nature park. He wrote on his blog that a “massive” boar charged him after he chanced upon a group of the animals. He said the boar “never made contact,” but he sustained minor injuries when he slipped while trying to climb a tree to escape. (AP)
A Maine lobsterman’s buoy has been found — in France, 2,500 miles from his boat. Adrian Batson offered the man who found the buoy, Gilbert Mellaza, some Maine lobster to ship it back after it washed up in the city of Brest. Mellaza had posted a photo of the buoy on a Facebook group called “Lost at Sea.” Members of the group used its ID number to track it to Batson. He said the buoy is one of 600 that he owns and has color-coded. (AP)
A Florida woman recently sued the Jefferson Davis Home and Presidential Library, seeking damages after being bitten by a camel while visiting the site in Biloxi, Miss. A camel called Sir Camelot roamed the grounds to help draw tourists to the home once used by the president of the Confederacy. I couldn’t believe this was happening in public and especially during rush hour,” said the woman, who had been sitting down, eating inside the station, when the screen switched to the video feed. “I mean, it was really explicit porn being shown on this huge screen and no one could turn it off.” The screens were recently

THE DISTRICT Union Station officials are investigating a possible hacking after an advertising video screen in the station’s main hall started playing pornographic videos Monday evening. The incident was caught on camera by a bystander, who said it happened around 5:30 p.m. and lasted about three minutes. In a video of the incident posted on social media and since removed, the large digital screen in the Main Hall, outside the entrance to Chipotle, displayed videos that were apparently streamed from the website PornHub. The sexually explicit content was immediately noticeable to passers-by. Some people stopped, stared and snickered, while others cautiously approached the screen, trying to figure out how to turn it off. “What the hell is this?” proclaimed one man, pointing at the screen. “Oh my God!” yelled a woman who watched from afar. ‘Pay Trump bribes here’ lights up his D.C. hotel
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY
verbatim
“I do believe that it should be a right, and I hope and pray moving forward that health care is a right for all worldwide.”
THE DISTRICT Since entering office, President Trump has faced accusations that his District hotel is profiting from his presidency. For a few minutes Monday night, projection artist Robin Bell tried to make the point with some fleeting messages. Bell, who has come as close as one can get to being a professional projection activist, parked his van about 9:15 p.m. on 12th Street NW — across the street from the west entrance of the Trump International Hotel. Bell and two friends then turned on a projector in the van and displayed animated anti-Trump messages about the president’s alleged conflicts of

interest onto the hotel’s facade. Hotel security ordered him to shut off the projections after only a few minutes, but it was enough time for the messages to go viral on social media. “That is one of the big things that I’m trying to do — using our artwork to explain these stories that are tricky,” said Bell, an
artist and filmmaker based in the District. “If someone can laugh and look at something, and then talk about it.” One projection included excerpts of the Constitution’s emoluments clause, while others said, “Pay Trump bribes here.” PERRY STEIN AND JONATHAN O’CONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

D.C. Council votes to move city’s primary date — again
McAuliffe aims to regulate power plant emissions
Four children and a teacher remained hospitalized a day after a bus carrying dozens of Philadelphia eighth-graders to Washington, D.C., for a field trip overturned in Maryland. A University of Maryland Medical System spokesman said Brittany Jacobs, a special education teacher at Charles W. Henry School, was in critical condition. The names and conditions of the four children haven’t been released. The bus carrying 26 children, three chaperones and the driver overturned at least once Monday on Interstate 95 in northeastern Maryland. Police say a car that tried to pass the bus clipped it. (AP)
D.C. lawmakers have again voted to reschedule the primary election. The D.C. Council voted 12-0 Tuesday to approve a bill that would move the primary to the third Tuesday in June. One council member abstained from the vote. The bill will go to Mayor Muriel Bowser for her signature after a second vote that’s mostly a formality. Next year’s primary had been scheduled for September. But that date conflicts with a federal law that’s meant to ensure military and overseas voters have enough time to fill out absentee ballots. The city’s primary election has shifted between April, June and September in recent years. (AP)
Gov. Terry McAuliffe announced plans Tuesday to regulate emissions from power plants, saying Virginia “cannot afford to sit idly by” as President Trump rolls back his predecessor’s efforts to battle climate change. The Democrat ordered his administration to begin formulating regulations to “abate, control or limit” carbon dioxide emissions from power plants fired by fossil fuels. The proposed regulations are due to be presented to the state Air Pollution Control Board by the end of the year. McAuliffe’s plans were hailed by environmentalists, who have had mixed views on his record in office. (AP)

‘Wholly appropriate’ NATIONAL SECURITY The White House on Tuesday defended President Trump’s disclosure of classified information to senior Russian officials as “wholly appropriate,” as Trump tried to beat back criticism from fellow Republicans and calm international allies increasingly wary about sharing their secrets with the new president. The highly classified information about an Islamic State plot was collected by Israel, a crucial source of intelligence and a close partner in the fight against some of the America’s fiercest threats in the Middle East. Trump’s disclosure of the information threatened to fray that partnership and piled pressure on the White House to explain the apparently on-the-spot decision to reveal the information to Russian diplomats in a meeting last week. In a series of morning tweets, Trump declared he has “an absolute right” as president to share “facts pertaining to terrorism” and airline safety with Russia. Although top aides on Monday had declared reports about Trump’s discussions false, National security adviser H.R. McMaster on Tuesday sought instead to downplay the significance of the information Trump revealed. The president had been engaging in “routine sharing” with foreign leaders, he said,

arguing that some of the information was publicly available. Still, the revelations sent a White House accustomed to chaos reeling anew. It is extraordinary for a president to share such information without the consent of the country that collected it, apparently violating the confidentiality of an intelligence-sharing agreement with Israel. It was, perhaps, even more remarkable that Trump chose to confide in representatives of an adversary, who could use the information to find its source. A U.S. official who confirmed the disclosure to The Associated Press said the revelation potentially put the source at risk. The U.S. official said that
Developments Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said he is “not worried” that President Trump disclosed classified information during discussions with Russian officials. Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., said he wants to give the White House a chance to explain what happened, and he wants to talk to officials who were at the meeting. Press secretary Sean Spicer drew a distinction between leaks and Trump’s conversation with the Russian officials, and called leaks “frankly dangerous.” CIA Director Mike Pompeo briefed members of the House intelligence committee after Express’ deadline. (AP)
Trump shared details about an Islamic State terror threat related to the use of laptop computers on aircraft with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak. The official said the disclosure came as Trump boasted about his access to classified intelligence. An excerpt from an official transcript of the meeting reveals that Trump told them, “I get great intel. I have people brief me on great intel every day.” In a statement, Israel’s ambassador to the U.S. Ron Dermer said the partnership between the U.S and Israel was solid. The New York Times first reported that Israel was the source of the intel. “Israel has full confidence in our intelligence-sharing relationship with the United States and looks forward to deepening that relationship in the years ahead under President Trump,” Dermer said. On Capitol Hill, Democrats and Republicans alike expressed concern. Sen. John McCain, RAriz., called the reports “deeply disturbing” and said they could affect the willingness of U.S. allies and partners to share intelligence with the U.S. M i nor it y L e ader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., called for Congress to have immediate access to a transcript of Trump’s meeting with the Russians, saying that if Trump refuses, Americans will doubt that their president is capable of safeguarding critical secrets. Remote island is world’s No. 1 haven for trash
Henderson Island, a tiny, uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean between Chile and New Zealand, is home to an estimated 38 million pieces of trash, according to a report Tuesday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The island is at the edge of a vortex of ocean currents, which tends to capture floating debris. (AP)

Trump, Erdogan hail ties despite dispute on Syria POLITICS The presidents of the U.S. and Turkey vowed Tuesday to repair a relationship battered by years of disputes over Syria’s civil war, even as they broached a new disagreement over U.S. plans to arm Kurdish fighters. Delivering a statement alongside Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President Trump said the U.S. would re-establish its military and economic partnership with Turkey. He committed to backing Turkey’s fight against the Islamic State and a Kurdish insurgency known as the PKK, which the U.S. and Turkey consider a terrorist organization. Such groups will “have no safe quarter,” Trump said in the White House, where he also commended Turkey’s “leadership in seeking an end to the horrific killing in Syria.” Erdogan issued a statement afterward, praising Trump for the “legendary triumph” he achieved in the election. While Erdogan called for the extradition of a Pennsylvania-based cleric he blames for a failed coup last summer, there was little tension. The biggest dispute between the two NATO allies in recent days has been the U.S. plans to arm Kurdish Syrian militants to help them fight ISIS. Turkey believes the Kurds in Syria are linked to the PKK. The U.S. sees the Syrian Kurds as its best battlefield partner on the ground. Trump did not address the issue in his statement. Sources say president asked then-FBI boss not to pursue Flynn POLITICS President Trump asked the FBI to drop its investigation into his former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, and urged former FBI director James Comey instead to pursue reporters in leak investigations, according to private notes taken by Comey, people familiar with the matter said. In the set of notes written by Comey following a Feb. 14 meeting with the president, Trump brought up the investigation into Flynn and urged Comey to drop the probe in the wake of the national security adviser’s resignation a day earlier. “I hope you can let this go,’’ Trump said, according to Comey’s notes, which were described by associates. Comey’s written account of the meeting is two pages long and highly detailed,
the associates said. The details of Comey’s notes were first reported Tuesday by The New York Times. The newspaper said Comey was in the Oval Office that day with other national security officials for a terrorism threat briefing. When that ended, Trump asked everyone to leave except Comey, and Trump eventually turned the conversation to Flynn. Details of Comey’s notes were shared with a very small circle of people at the FBI and Justice Department, these people said. Comey’s description of the event makes clear his understanding of the conversation was that the president was seeking to impede the investigation, according to people who have read the account or had it read to them. Comey felt the conversation was improper and decided to keep the details of the conversations away from the case agents working on the Russia probe. The FBI and Justice Department declined to comment.

Comey’s notes show pressure from Trump
Associates of Comey, top, said his notes from a meeting said Trump told him, “I hope you can let this go,” referring to the FBI probe of Michael Flynn.
The White House denied the report in a statement Tuesday: “While the President has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the President has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn. … This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal

of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey.’’ Trump abruptly fired Comey last week, saying he did so based on his very public handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe. But the White House has provided differing accounts of the firing. And some lawmakers have alleged that the sudden ouster was an attempt to stifle the bureau’s probe into whether
Trump associates had any ties to Russia’s alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election. The Comey memo is the clearest proof to date that the president has tried to influence that investigation. The Times said it was part of a paper trail Comey created documenting what he saw as Trump’s efforts to improperly interfere in the probe. Senate Republicans and Democrats were caught off guard by the news Tuesday. “I don’t know the facts, so I really want to wait until I find out what the facts are before commenting,” said Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Comey should testify on Capitol Hill: “Let’s get to the bottom of what happened with the director. And the best way to get to the bottom of it, is for him to testify. ... I’m not going to take a memo, I want the guy to come in.” Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he will ask Comey for additional material as part of the panel’s investigation. “Memos, transcripts, tapes — the list keeps getting longer,” Warner said. Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut tweeted: “Just leaving Senate floor. Lots of chatter from Ds and Rs about the exact definition of ‘obstruction of justice.’ ” (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

LINDA DAVIDSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Over two days in March at the civic center in Salisbury, Md., 116 dentists treated 1,165 patients, according to the Mission of Mercy.
Teeth reveal stark 1 in 5 economic divide DENTAL DIVIDE
The approximate proportion of Americans older than 65 who do not have a single real tooth left.
Cosmetic dentistry soars for affluent while many poor live in pain
HEALTH Two hours before sunrise, Dee Matello joined the line outside the Wicomico Civic Center in Salisbury, Md., where dentists from five states were getting ready to fix the teeth of the first 1,000 people in line. Matello was No. 503. The small-business owner who supports President Trump had a cracked molar, no dental insurance and a nagging soreness that had forced her to chew on the right side of her mouth for years. “It’s always bothering me,” she said. And although her toothache wasn’t why she voted for Trump, it was a reminder of one reason she did: the feeling that she had been abandoned, left struggling to meet basic needs in a country full of fantastically rich people.
As the distance between rich and poor grows in the U.S., few consequences are so overlooked as the humiliating divide in dental care. High-end cosmetic dentistry is soaring, and betteroff Americans spend well over $1 billion each year just to make their teeth a few shades whiter. Meanwhile, millions of others rely on charity clinics and hospital emergency rooms to treat painful and neglected teeth. “The country is way too divided between well-off people and people struggling for everything — even to see the dentist,” Matello said. “And the worst part is, I don’t see a bridge to cross over to be one of those rich people.” Trump promised that he would build a “beautiful” health care system to serve every American,
a system that would cost less and do more. But nearly four months into Trump’s presidency, Matello sees him backing a Republican health care plan that appears to leave low-income people and the elderly worse off. “I am hearing about a number of people who will lose their coverage under the new plan,” Matello said. “Is Trump the wolf in grandma’s clothes? My husband and I are now saying to each other: ‘Did we really vote for him?’ ” For people like Matello, who lives in Laurel, Del., even the water can work against them. Many homes in rural areas, including Matello’s, rely on well water, which isn’t fluoridated. “In these places, we see people with a different level of dental problems,” said Patricia Higgins,

one of the dentists volunteering at the Salisbury clinic. George Acs, director of the dental department at Chesapeake Health Care, said people with oral pain and infections are inundating hospitals, and it’s “absolutely horrifying.” Acs recently testified about the problem before the Maryland state legislature. The emergency room is generally not equipped to fix dental problems, Acs told lawmakers. So ER doctors just medicate people with “a perpetual cycle of antibiotics and opioids.” That cycle is feeding a nationwide epidemic of opioid addiction. Meanwhile, Higgins said, Americans’ increasing reliance on all kinds of drugs is further ruining their teeth. Many drugs cause dry mouth, which leads to more cavities. More than 50 million Americans live in areas officially designated by the federal government as Dental Health Professional Shortage Areas. A great many of them are working poor. “It’s completely skewed. You have the fewest dentists where the need is greatest,” Acs said. Then there’s the matter of payment. Teeth generally are treated separately from the rest of the body, which many public health officials view as a mistake. The separation extends to insurance. Even Medicare, the federal health program that covers 55 million seniors and disabled people, does not cover dental problems. That’s why many people have resorted to waiting in long lines at free clinics. Over two days at the civic center in Salisbury, 116 dentists treated 1,165 patients, providing $1 million worth of fillings and other care, according to the Mission of Mercy. While Matello was grateful, she couldn’t help but wonder why there wasn’t a better system for people like her. “I am trying to think that this is not demeaning,” she said as she cleared the chair for the next person in line. “But it is. It’s like a Third World country.” MARY JORDAN AND KEVIN SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Korea in cyberattack Security researchers have found digital clues in the malware used in last weekend’s global ransomware attack that might indicate North Korea is involved, although they caution that the evidence is not conclusive. An early version of the ransomware that affected more than 150 countries and major businesses and organizations shares a portion of its code with a tool from a hacker group known as Lazarus, which researchers think is linked to the North Korean government. Syria on Tuesday rejected accusations by the U.S. that it carried out mass killings at a prison near Damascus and then burned the victims’ bodies in a crematorium as a cover-up, describing the allegations as “lies” and “fabrications.” The allegations are a “new Hollywood plot” to justify U.S. intervention in Syria, Syria’s Foreign Ministry said, noting what it called a U.S. track record of using false claims as a pretext for military aggression. Caffeine binge in 2-hour span kills teenager Davis Cripe of Richland County, S.C., left home April 26 a healthy 16-year-old, but in art class that afternoon he fell to his knees and told worried classmates that he felt lightheaded. He passed out on the floor and then was rushed to a hospital, but soon died. The coroner said the death might have remained a medical mystery if friends hadn’t described what Davis ingested at lunch: enough caffeine to disrupt and ultimately stop his heart. In two hours, he drank a cafe latte from McDonald’s and a large Mountain Dew, then “chugged” a 16-ounce energy drink when he got back to art class, coroner Gary Watts said. Watts said the official cause of death was “caffeine-induced cardiac event causing a probable arrhythmia.” He said the problem was not “the level of caffeine in his system, but the amount of caffeine he took in … in that short period of time.” South Carolina’s Palmetto Poison Center issued an advisory Tuesday, pointing to an FDA recommendation that adults not consume more than 400 milligrams of caffeine a day — about four to five cups of coffee. Energy drinks contain about 300 mg of caffeine. The American Academy of Pediatrics says children and adolescents shouldn’t consume caffeine at all. CLEVE R. WOOTSON JR.

President Trump is preparing to go public with information about how last year shaped his personal fortune, a White House official said. Vice President Mike Pence filed his own 2016 personal financial disclosure Monday. Presidents are not required to update the public on their finances until the second year of their presidency. Such documents include an accounting of a person’s personal income, assets and liabilities. Trump’s 2016 form could shed light on the impact the election had on his Trump Organization. The information, however, is no substitute for tax returns, which Trump has chosen not to release. (AP)
Eshaq Jahangiri, a reformist candidate in Iran’s presidential election, dropped out Tuesday and threw his support behind President Hassan Rouhani. It was a widely expected move that will strengthen the incumbent’s campaign against a hard-liner. Jahangiri is the senior vice president under Rouhani. “I will dedicate all my abilities to support Rouhani” in Friday’s election, Jahangiri said in a statement. On Monday, Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf dropped out to back hard-liner Ebrahim Raisi. The election is largely viewed as a referendum on the nuclear deal. Only four candidates remain. (AP)

Bradley Beal, left, said he hopes the Wizards retain restricted free agent Otto Porter Jr.
THREE POINTERS
Forward thinking After painful playoff ending, Wizards face prospect of losing Porter in the summer NBA For the Wizards, Tuesday morning came like a sledgehammer to the head. “It’s always the worst,” Bradley Beal said twice. “I feel like I’m hung over.” This morning-after feeling followed the sting of a Game 7 loss in Boston on Monday night in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Despite the Wizards’ limitations — dwindling trust in the bench and sometimes losing defensive focus — they still came within one game of upsetting the top seed. In fact, had they patched together one solid final quarter, they might have spent Tuesday breaking down film inside a Cleveland hotel instead of
gathering at Verizon Center for individual exit interviews with coach Scott Brooks. Even while spinning from the 115-105 loss, the Wizards head into the summer more assured about their place in the Eastern Conference. “We definitely got at least a little five-year run in us,” Markieff Morris boasted. And yet, this young and established core could face a major loss this summer. Starter Otto Porter Jr. enters restricted free agency after having the best season of his fouryear career. His production as a 6-foot-9 forward with a knockdown 3-point jumper — he made 43.4 percent of 3-pointers in the regular season — may convince

suitors to dole out a maximum contract; the Wizards would have to match the money to retain him and keep their young core intact. After second-round exits in the 2014 and 2015 playoffs, the Wizards lost major pieces at small forward in Trevor Ariza and Paul Pierce, respectively. Although Porter on Tuesday
remained true to his reticent ways — deflecting talk about his pending free agency by claiming that he hasn’t thought about it yet — his teammates campaigned on his behalf. Beal said that Porter, 23, is “part of our core” and “a true talent. I’m hoping to get him back.” Last July, Beal touted his desire for a max contract. On the first day of free agency, the Wizards re-signed him to a fiveyear deal worth $128 million. Although Beal acted swiftly, he advocated patience for Porter. “Ultimately he has to do what’s best for him,” Beal said. “We love him here, hopefully we’ll have him back, and you know, it’s a business and a process.”

The future is bright The Wizards’ best season in 38 years ended with a thud in Game 7 in Boston. But after posting 49 wins in 2016-17, they have reasons for hope. Here are three of them. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)
3 Quality hire In the first season of his five-year deal, Scott Brooks reversed a 2-8 start, led an eight-win improvement from 2015-16 and found ways to motivate a young core.
2 Maturing leader John Wall, 26, was undone by shooting woes in Game 7 — he was 8-of-23 —but still improved across the board. A healthy offseason will give him time to hone his jumper.
1 Return on investment The Wizards were rewarded for giving Bradley Beal, 23, a $128 million deal last year. He stayed healthy, forged chemistry with Wall and grew as a scorer (23.1 ppg).

Gortat will ‘analyze if this is the right fit’
During exit interviews Tuesday, Marcin Gortat spoke about his “underappreciated” position as a traditional center and blasted “idiots” who criticize his scoring. Gortat, 33, averaged 10.8 points and 10.4 rebounds in the regular season. With two years left on a $60 million deal, he said he will take this summer to “analyze if this is the right fit.” He added, “I’m the oldest guy on the team. ... I just know how the business works, so I’m prepared for everything.” (TWP)

New coordinator plans blitzes that will deliver discomfort to offenses
Celtics’ reward is meeting with LeBron, Cavs NBA PLAYOFFS Ever since the Celtics broke up their Big Three in 2013, they’ve sat idly this time of year while LeBron James, above, Stephen Curry and Kawhi Leonard have battled for NBA championships. With Isaiah Thomas, who is averaging 24.5 points per game in the playoffs, leading the charge, Boston is back in the conference finals for the first time since 2012 — the final year of an era fueled by Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Eliminating the Wizards on Monday earned the Celtics their toughest test yet: a series against James and the well-rested Cavaliers. Game 1 is tonight (8:30, TNT) in Boston. Top-seeded Boston is seeking an 18th NBA title, and its first since beating the Lakers in 2008. The defending champion Cavs won three of the four regular-seasons meetings between the teams. Boston’s lone win in the series came March 1, with the Cavs’ Kevin Love still out after knee surgery. In the playoffs, Boston’s hopes start with Jae Crowder, who is expected to be the primary defender on James, along with reserve Jaylen Brown. Avery Bradley will be tasked with slowing down Kyrie Irving, with Al Horford on Love and Thomas guarding sharpshooter J.R. Smith. “We know it’s going to be tough, but at this point, anything can happen,” Thomas said, “and we really believe it.”
REDSKINS Greg Manusky is hardly the first new NFL defensive coordinator to promise a more aggressive, attacking approach. But Manusky, who succeeds Joe Barry as Redskins defensive coordinator after coaching outside linebackers last year, had a novel way of illustrating his basic concept to reporters this week at the Ryan Kerrigan Leukemia Golf Classic. Asked how his defense would be more aggressive, Manusky, a

Harry Styles, who is most definitely not Mick Jagger, is ready to be taken seriously now.
VIDEO STREAM
‘Bon Appetit’
As young as he’ll ever be On his new solo debut, Harry Styles embraces grown-up sensitivity ALBUM REVIEW Surely, all the young dudes in boy bands believe in reincarnation. It’s part of the deal. You spend your adolescence touring the planet as a well-behaved multimillionaire, driven mad by teenage screams, counting the days until you’re free to be your truer, more rebellious self. But few have taken advantage of this radical opportunity
with the gusto of Harry Styles, who, after six years of service in that sentient Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue known as One Direction, has chosen to reintroduce himself to the world as a self-deprecating skeeze. “Woke up alone in my hotel room/ Played with myself, where were you?” the 23-year-old sings near the finale of his self-titled solo debut. “Fell back to sleep, I got drunk by noon/ I never felt less cool.” Obviously, Styles — singing

about his most pathetic self in his most dignified voice — has never been more cool than he is in this moment, quietly spilling his guts onto the hotel carpet. Countless boy-band graduates before him have signaled their heroic entry to adulthood by trying to sound oversexed and overexposed, but Styles has jumped ahead, past the horniness, past the vulnerability, all the way to the valley of humiliation. It doesn’t get more grown-up than that. As for the rest of the album, it sounds mature enough to be eligible for AARP membership. Styles and his producers — including Jeff Bhasker, whose golden touch has expanded the fortunes of Bruno Mars, Lana Del Rey, Kanye West and Rihanna — seem deeply enamored with the splendor of the ’70s, mixing the melodic stardust of David Bowie, Elton John and Paul McCartney with a few dribbles from Pink Floyd’s lava lamp. Of the 10 tracks, there are two peculiarities, “Kiwi” and “Only Angel,” a pair of songs that flirt with the cheek and pomp of hair metal but remain too tasteful to generate any significant friction. And by the time you reach the
“Every decision I’ve made since I was 16 was made in a democracy. I felt like it was time to make a decision about the future.”
Woke Katy Perry is back with a campy and (purposely) uncomfortable new video with Migos. In it, Perry is a “Westworld”-esque doll who is being primped and prodded like a literal piece of meat so the world can consume her. (She’s even dropped into a giant pot full of vegetables and spices before being “served.”) It’s a commentary on how women are perceived in our culture. Message received. BRYANNA CAPPADONA (EXPRESS)
HARRY STYLES, telling Rolling Stone that a One Direction hiatus inspired him to pursue his solo career
end of this album, it will have felt like a nine-song walk-up to “From the Dining Table” — that perilous ballad about feeling worked up and ashamed in a lonely hotel room. It begins with just Styles and his acoustic guitar in isolation, but a string section eventually arrives to help float an optimistic thought: “Maybe one day, you’ll call me and tell me that you’re sorry, too.” That’s a cowardly way to apologize to someone, and Styles knows it. The strings vanish and he’s alone again with his guitar, his frustration, his humiliation and the greatest song he’s ever sung. CHRIS RICHARDS (THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘Malibu’ Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus ditched the psychedelic weirdness from her “Bangerz” and “Dead Petz” era to re-emerge with an understated, introspective new song. The video has fresh-faced Cyrus at a remote beach, wading in the water and rolling in the sand in a love-struck haze. “It’s a brand-new start/ A dream come true in Malibu,” she sings, embracing her newfound oasis. Letterman retired from CBS in 2015, replaced by Stephen Colbert. Unlike Carson, one of Letterman’s heroes, he’s remained in the public eye. “For decades, David Letterman delivered comedy to America that was smart, authentic and frankly, what many of us came to rely upon to elevate our spirits after a long day,” said Kennedy Center President Deborah F. Rutter. “Raise your hand if, like me, you shifted your bedtime
because you didn’t want to miss a moment of Dave on television lest you not be part of the conversation with friends and co-workers the next day.” Letterman said in a statement that receiving the Twain was “an exciting honor.” “For 33 years, there was no greater guest, no greater friend of the show, than Mark Twain,” he added. “The guy could rea lly tell a story.” GEOFF EDGERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

AWARDS David Letterman, who reinvented late-night television with his irreverent and original comic sensibility, will receive the Kennedy Center’s 2017 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Letterman, 70, will be honored with the 20th annual prize at a gala performance Oct. 22, which will later be televised nationally. The Twain, considered the most prestigious honor in the world of comedy, will be awarded to Letterman five years after he was made a Kennedy Center Honoree. Steve Martin, Bill Cosby, Lily Tomlin, Carol Burnett and Neil Simon also have received both honors. It’s not surprising. Letterman’s late-night reign — which began with NBC’s “Late Night” in 1982 before he moved to the “Late Show” on CBS in 1993 — stretched over 33 years and 6,028 shows. He arrived at a time when late-night was ruled by Johnny Carson, the legendary host of “The Tonight Show.” With Letterman and Jay Leno competing for an audience, the landscape shifted, spawning a host of new programs, from Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” to a slew of younger hosts, including Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Conan O’Brien.

“Please go put these in the garden section of Home Depots across the nation.” @MWGERARD, on this cardboard cutout of White House press secretary Sean Spicer’s head. After Spicer took questions
from reporters while standing near some bushes last week, Canadian professor Lisa Kadonaga was inspired to create the cutout. Her Facebook post went viral, and started a trend of people making their own “Spicer in the bushes.”
“Can Instagram be original and come up with their own features rather than steal everything from Snapchat?” @BANDAR_00, tweeting after Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, released eight face filters on Tuesday to use with Instagram Stories. Since Instagram first incorporated stories — a series of photos and videos that last for 24 hours — it has seemed like the app is trying to take over Snapchat’s users and functionality.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Something rather dangerous is beckoning you, and you may not have the strength to resist. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll be in a position to teach others something that they’re not likely to learn from anyone else. You can combine style with substance. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’ll want to leave a good first impression, certainly, but not at the expense of something deep inside you hold dear. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You can show others just how much you know, and do it in a way that impresses without leaving them with a bad taste. TUESDAY’S SOLUTION
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You want
to be more in charge, but you’re not sure what you’d do if you were given that kind of authority. You can learn much from the past.
TUESDAY’S SOLUTION
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) What took a while only yesterday can happen in a snap today — and perhaps vice versa. You can’t anticipate all such reversals. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Even when someone else is calling the shots, you can be relied on to do what only you can do — and secure a victory for the team. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

You’re not interested in what everyone else is doing; rather, you want to focus on what a certain someone has going on.
TODAY: A muggy and hotter air mass envelops our day as highs soar through the upper 80s to low 90s under mostly sunny skies. Humidity increases as well with dew points up into the middle 60s (moderate discomfort levels). Mostly clear, warm and even muggy tonight with lows ranging from the low 60s to the lower 70s right in the city.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You recognize that someone has a secret, but now is not the time to pry. Let him or her rest assured that the secret is safe. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ll receive information bit by bit, but you’ll be able to put it all together as it comes. You need not fall behind.
