‘I paid 85 million for this place. I’m not leaving it even to go to space.’

Just a nice story about firefighters saving a puppy. Happy Friday!

A 93-year-old Ohio man wrapped up his nearly seven decades of golfing with his first hole-in-one. Ben Bender told The Zanesville Times Recorder “the Lord knew this was his last round and gave him a hole-in-one. Bender aced the 152-yard third hole last month at Green Valley Golf Course in Zanesville with a 5-wood. He says he was in awe watching it, but then his hip started bothering him, forcing him to stop after a few more holes. (AP)

The owner of a New York City condominium is offering a trip to outer space included with the purchase of an $85 million apartment. The condo is a 15,000-square-foot duplex located on the entirety of the 45th floor of the Atelier building in Manhattan. WNBC-TV reported the steep price tag for the 10-bedroom, 11-bathroom apartment comes with a number of amenities, including two seats on a trip to outer space. (AP)

Firefighters have rescued a puppy that fell into a St. Louis-area drainage pipe and tumbled about 20 feet underground. Video posted on the Ferguson Fire Department’s Facebook page shows firefighters using a rope with a loop on the end to pull the squealing puppy from the 8-inch pipe Wednesday. The 5-week-old pit bull wags its tail as the firefighters erupt into smiles. The puppy was not hurt. (AP)

‘Can I have the Ovi meal?’ CAPITALS If it’s game day and the Capitals are playing at home, there’s an order of chicken Parmesan, pasta, Italian bread and four (yes, four) different sauces specially prepared for Alex Ovechkin bound for Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington. It’s a high-calorie culinary tradition that dates back to the captain’s rookie year. Former Capitals General Manager George McPhee and his wife, Leah, were loyal customers of Mamma Lucia, the small Italian chain that first opened in Rockville in 1992. When David Kottler became the manager at Mamma Lucia’s Bethesda location five years ago, the restaurant regularly filled delivery orders for six of McPhee’s players. Since then, more and more Capitals have gravitated toward healthier meals prepared by the team’s in-house chef, but Ovechkin has stuck with his Mamma Lucia standard. As ESPN’s Emily Kaplan documented in October, Mamma Lucia remains a significant part of his diet.

‘Oz’ slippers will soon be back on view Click your heels: The popular ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz” will go back on view at the National Museum of American History on Oct. 19. The slippers from the 1939 MGM movie were removed on April 23, 2017, for conservation and research. The project was supported by a Kickstarter campaign in 2016 that raised nearly $350,000. Museum officials said the slippers will be a highlight of an interim display on American popular culture. The permanent cultural galleries, which are closed, will reopen in 2020. (TWP)

defenseman misspelled the restaurant’s name throughout. “Ovi always orders the same thing,” Orpik wrote. “He makes a big display of it too. There’s no shame. It’ll be eleven in the morning, way before anyone is thinking about eating lunch, and Ovi will walk into the dining area yelling, ‘Mama Luccia! Mama Luccia!’ I don’t know. It’s weird, but it seems normal now.” Kottler said their routine before a home game hasn’t changed in years. A chef shows up at the Bethesda location at 9 a.m. to prepare Ovechkin’s regular order. A driver hits the road with the food by 9:30 and drops it off at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. While there are no immediate plans to add an “Ovechkin special” to the menu, Kottler said there has been an uptick in chicken Parmesan orders since the Players’ Tribune article was published, including during Game 3 on Tuesday. “It’s just gone crazy since then,” Kottler said. “I had a huge delivery night [on Tuesday]. A lot of people were getting two pizzas, plus a chicken parm dinner. Some of them even asked, ‘Can I have the Ovi meal?’ ”

Metro to test nearly 1K concrete panels

KATHERINE FREY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION Metro officials will seek an independent assessment of more than 1,000 concrete panels installed at five rail stations being built as part of the Silver Line rail extension, following allegations the manufacturer used unapproved materials and instructed employees to cover up test results showing deficiencies. The accusations were contained in a whistleblower lawsuit filed unsealed Wednesday. The assertions by a former employee of Universal Concrete set off speculation about the fate of the $5.8 billion rail project, which is already 13 months behind schedule. Officials from Universal Concrete, based in Stowe, Pa., have not responded to requests for comment on the lawsuit and its allegations. Based on the unsealed lawsuit, “it’s necessary for Metro to look at this with our own independent contractor to ensure whatever remedies are applied to the concrete are ultimately safe for our passengers and our employees,” Paul Wiedefeld, Metro’s general manager, said Thursday. Dan Stessel, a Metro spokesman, said it is not clear who will pay for the cost of the independent inspection or how long it will take to complete. Construction of the Silver Line

Concrete panels for several of the new Silver Line stations don’t meet safety standards, according to a whistleblower lawsuit unsealed Wednesday.

is overseen by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which hired Capital Rail Constructors, a joint venture between Clark Construction Group and Kiewit Infrastructure to build it. But ultimately it will be Metro’s responsibility to oversee and maintain the rail line, including a total of six new stations. Wiedefeld said Metro would continue to collaborate with the airports authority, “but let me be clear: Metro is committed to ensuring that any remedies are paid for by those responsible.” As described in the lawsuit, the pre-cast concrete did not meet specifications dealing with water content and air mixtures that could make it prone to problems with erosion and cracking. MWAA officials said Thursday that their consultants would

conduct their own review of the allegations about flaws in the making of the precast concrete used on exterior walls at five of the six new stations being built in the median of the Dulles Toll Road and Dulles Greenway. Some of the outside walls are designed to emulate bricks. The sealing that CRC plans to apply to the panels is designed to protect them from salt and water splatter from the adjacent roads. “The Airport Authority welcomes this decision by [Metro] to have an independent contractor look into the conditions of the concrete panels,” officials said in a statement. “MWAA, like [Metro], is committed to building a safe and durable extension Metrorail extension that serves rail customers and taxpayers.” LORI ARATANI AND FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Qatar pays for late-night Metro service Thanks to Qatar, Capitals fans got an extra hour of subway service Thursday for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference final against Tampa Bay Lightning. It costs $100,000 to keep the Metrorail system open for an additional 60 minutes. Hours before the scheduled start of Thursday’s game, Mayor Muriel Bowser tweeted that Qatar and the Downtown D.C. Business Improvement District are “doing it again to deliver late night Metro service to Caps fans.” The Qatar Embassy also touted the arrangement, saying via Twitter: “We believe in bringing communities closer together through sports.” Qatar has mounted an aggressive and well-funded campaign to rehabilitate its image in the U.S. since President Trump criticized the country last year for funding terrorism. Up to 10 inches of rain has fallen in some parts — with more to come REGION The Washington region is soaked and will only become more sopping through Friday and even into Saturday. Flood watches and warnings were in effect as streams rose and, in some cases, overflowed their banks. The flood watch, which took

effect Thursday and continues into Friday night, calls for three to five inches of rain in addition to what has already fallen. The saturated ground will make it easy for water to collect, especially in low-lying areas. It will not rain continuously. Downpours will tend to come in waves, which should increase in frequency Friday. Strong winds are generally not expected. Measurable rain has fallen in Washington on six straight days.

Wet region braces for next drenching Part of Route 108 in Brunswick, Md., was closed after flooding this week.

Through Thursday morning, more than 3.5 inches had accumulated since last week. Generally, across the region, about 2 to 5 inches were most common, although areas between roughly

Winchester, Va., and Frederick, Md., had received up to 10 inches. The Mid-Atlantic River Forecast Center said to expect minor to moderate flooding at many locations in the Potomac basin

through Sunday. A flood warning has been issued for much of the mainstem Potomac River from Shepherdstown, W.Va., downstream into D.C. starting Friday evening “until further notice,” the National Weather Service said. It includes the river at Little Falls which, by Sunday, could crest around 13.7 feet at which point “significant portions of the C&O Canal towpath are flooded.” In D.C. and Alexandria, a coastal flood watch is in effect through the weekend. “Freshwater inundation expected beginning Friday morning, with potential to significantly raise tide levels above normal by several feet,” the National Weather Service said. The ash plume at the Kilauea Volcano, as seen from a Mauna Loa webcam on Thursday.

Eruption shoots ash into sky Geologists warn that Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano could become even more violent HAWAII Hawaii’s K i lauea volca no erupted anew early Thursday with little sound and only modest fury, spewing a steely gray plume of ash about 30,000 feet into the sky that began raining down on a nearby town. The explosion at the summit came shortly after 4 a.m., following two weeks of volcanic activity that sent lava flows into neighborhoods and destroyed at least 26 homes. Scientists said the eruption was the most powerful in recent days, though it probably lasted only a few minutes. Geologists have warned that the volcano could become even more violent, with increasing ash production and the potential that future blasts could hurl boulders the size of cows from the summit. Toby Hazel, who lives in Pahoa, near the mountain, said she heard “a lot of booming sounds”

Thursday. Those came after days of earthquakes. “It’s just time to go — it really, really is,” she said, preparing to leave town. Some people in the community closest to the volcano slept through the blast, said Kanani Aton, a spokeswoman for Hawaii County Civil Defense, who spoke to relatives and friends in the town called Volcano. At least one person who was awake heard nothing. Epic Lava tour operator John Tarson is an early riser and only learned about the eruption after receiving an alert on his phone. The plume, a towering column of ash reaching into a hazy sky, looked different than others he’s witnessed, because of its sheer height. “What I noticed is the plume was just rising straight into the air, and it was not tipping in any direction,” he said.

Residents as far away as Hilo, about 30 miles from Kilauea, were starting to notice the volcano’s effects. Pua’ena Ahn, who lives in Hilo, complained about having labored breathing, itchy, watery eyes and some skin irritation from airborne ash. A National Weather Service ash advisory was in effect until noon, and county officials distributed ash masks to area residents. Several schools closed because of the risk of elevated levels of sulfur dioxide, a volcanic gas. The immediate risk health risk comes from ash particles in the air, said Dr. Josh Green, a state senator who represents part of the Big Island. Anyone with respiratory difficulties should limit exposure to the ash, Green said. The summit crater sits within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which has been closed since

May 11 as a safety precaution over risks of a violent eruption. Kilauea, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, has been erupting continuously since 1983. It’s among the five volcanoes that form the Big Island, and it’s the only one actively erupting. Robert Hughes, who owns a bed-and-breakfast about a mile and a half from the crater, didn’t hear anything and has yet to spot ash. His business has been hit hard by fears of the volcano, a major attraction for visitors. He’s lost hundreds of reservations and had just three guests Thursday instead of the typical 12 to 14. “In the old days, people used to love to come see the volcano,” Hughes said. “Now they’re acting like it’s all super-dangerous and everything, but it just kind of oozes out.” SOPHIA YAN AND CALEB JONES (AP)

Her road to royalty Meghan Markle waves during a trip to Northern Ireland in March.

in Harvey Young, a professor who was brought in to teach the theater department’s first course on African-American playwrights. Young, who is black, said Markle’s description of being wrongly identified as white stuck in his mind: “That sense that you can be in a space and feel accepted, and then something is said, and it makes you realize, oh, you are not being embraced for who you are entirely.” This happened to Markle constantly. Even her first talent agent, Nick Collins, said he didn’t send her to casting calls for people of color until she mentioned her black mom. But getting into more auditions didn’t lead to more gigs. In the mid-2000s, Collins said, diversity still felt like a box the industry was trying to check, rather than an asset to recruit. “If she was hitting the market for acting jobs today, she would be so much happier now than she was 11 years ago,” he said. Mostly what she was: the girl who was on screen for a few moments, saying next to nothing. Then, at 29, she auditioned for “Suits.” USA Network was looking for the girl who could play Rachel Zane, a firebrand in a pencil skirt whom the show’s protagonist would fall for. There was no ethnic descriptor attached to the role. “The reality is that girl would have been played by Jennifer Aniston 10 years ago,” said director Kevin Bray. By the second season, Markle’s character had a family history — her father was a black attorney.

Before starring in “Suits,” left, Markle was a model on “Deal or No Deal.”

ROYAL WEDDING Meghan Markle was glaring at her love interest. She leaned forward, fury clear in her expression as she asked the question: Was it so hard to believe one of her parents was black? “You think,” she spat, “this is just a year-round tan?” It was just a few lines from a scene in the TV law drama “Suits.” But Markle would later describe it as something more: the moment she was no longer playing the role of “ethnically ambiguous.” Finally, she’d been cast to play a character who was not white, like her father, or black, like her mother — but both. Five years after that scene aired, Markle is about to step into one of the world’s most glaring spotlights. On Saturday, she will marry His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales, better known as Prince Harry. For Markle, she is both the heroine of a fairy tale come true — American meets prince! — and a spark for a debate about the role of race in society. And it is that topic, those who know Markle say, that is far more central to the story she would tell about her own life. “Being biracial paints a blurred line that is equal parts staggering and illuminating,” Markle wrote in a 2015 essay for Elle UK. She has described how early her awareness began: Her father bought her both black and white dolls, but none of them looked quite like her. In her senior year at Northwestern University, she confided

Markle — shown here in portraits from eighth, ninth and 12th grades — grew up in Los Angeles and attended an all-girls Catholic high school.

Who is Meghan Markle? Early years: She had an upper-middle-class childhood in Los Angeles, where she was the star of school plays, a member of the student council and a homeless-shelter volunteer. She attended an all-girls Catholic high school. College years: At 18, she moved to Evanston, Ill., to attend Northwestern, where she majored in theater and international relations. She lived in the Kappa Kappa Gamma house for two years before living alone her senior year. Start of her acting career: In Hollywood, she side-hustled as a waitress and freelance calligrapher to pursue her dream of acting. A two-year marriage to movie producer Trevor Engelson ended in divorce. But after that divorce, Markle’s TV show “Suits” became a hit, her lifestyle blog garnered a small cult following and she dedicated herself to international philanthropy. Dating Harry: In the fall of 2016, news broke that Prince Harry was dating Markle. The British tabloids were in a tizzy — and were, in some cases, blatantly racist. Kensington Palace called out the “racial undertones” in the coverage and the “wave of abuse and harassment” that Markle experienced. (TWP)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad made surprise visit to Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin

“I recall her being very appreciative that we were honoring her identity,” said Aaron Korsh, the creator of “Suits.” As the show found success, Markle booked speaking appearances, wrote essays for women’s magazines and started her lifestyle blog, The Tig. With every post, more people were learning her message: She was here, she wrote, “To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.” Then came Harry and the Windsors and a royal engagement. The blog and all of her social media accounts were deleted. The archives were wiped. The story of Meghan Markle, as she had written it, was being erased. In November 2017, the couple announced their engagement. Online, the conversation quickly returned to race. Markle was no longer taking part in the conversation about her identity. Kehinde Andrews, a Birmingham City University professor who studies race in Britain, says that is why Markle marrying into the royal family isn’t as revolutionary as it seems. “She’ll be a princess that happens to be black rather than a black princess,” Andrews said. “Is she going to use this platform to raise issues of importance to black people in this country? That would be a black princess. I don’t think the royal family would allow it to happen. … It would make them too uncomfortable.” But author Margo Jefferson, who is black, sees Markle’s very presence in Kensington Palace as progress. “She has already done race history a real service,” Jefferson wrote in The Guardian. The question is what she’ll do next. In search of the answer, royalwatchers are dissecting every bit of wedding news. In Markle’s next role, will she get to be the “strong, confident mixed-race woman”? Or must she be the prim, polished duchess tradition requires? She may be hoping there’s a way to, once again, be both. JESSICA CONTRERA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Congo’s Ebola outbreak reaches city of 1 million MBANDAKA, CONGO Congo’s Ebola outbreak has spread to a crossroads city of more than 1 million people, in a troubling turn that marks the first time the vast, impoverished country has encountered the lethal virus in an urban area. “This is a major, major gamechanger in the outbreak,” Dr. Peter Salama, the World Health Organization’s deputy directorgeneral of emergency preparedness and response, warned Thursday. A single case of Ebola was confirmed in Mbandaka, a densely

populated provincial capital on the Congo River, Congo’s health minister, Oly Ilunga, said late Wednesday. The city is about 93 miles from Bikoro, the rural area where the outbreak was announced last week. Medical teams rushed to track down anyone thought to have had contact with infected people, while WHO continued shipping thousands of doses of an experimental vaccine. A total of 44 cases of Ebola have been reported in Congo in this outbreak: three confirmed, 20 probable and 21 suspected,

A hopeful sign: White rhino is pregnant A southern white rhino has become pregnant through artificial insemination at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, giving hope for efforts to save a subspecies of one of the world’s most recognizable animals, researchers said Thursday. Scientists will be watching to see if the rhino, named Victoria, can carry her calf to term over 16 to 18 months of gestation. If so, they hope someday she could serve as a surrogate mother and give birth to a related northern white rhino, whose population is down to two females after decades of poaching. according to WHO. Twenty-three of those people have died. Until now, the outbreak was confined to remote rural areas, where Ebola, which is spread by bodily fluids, travels more slowly. “We’re certainly not trying to cause any panic in the national or international community,” Salama said. But “urban Ebola can result in an exponential increase in cases in a way that rural Ebola struggles to do.” There is no specific treatment for Ebola, which can be fatal in up to 90 percent of cases. Controversial CIA pick Haspel gets confirmed POLITICS The Senate confirmed Gina Haspel on Thursday as the first female director of the CIA, following a difficult nomination process that reopened an emotional debate about brutal interrogation techniques in one of the darkest chapters in the spy agency’s history. The 54-45 vote split both parties, with six Democrats joining most Republicans in support. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., was absent for the vote. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., steered the confirmation swiftly past opponents, including the ailing McCain, whose rejection of the nominee over her role in the CIA’s torture program hung over an impassioned debate. Ahead of voting, McConnell said Haspel “demonstrated candor, integrity and a forthright approach” throughout the confirmation process and “has quietly earned the respect and admiration” of intelligence community leaders. Supporters cited Haspel’s 33-year career at the agency. Former top intelligence officials said she earned the chance to take the helm. But Haspel’s nomination was contentious because of her role in a former CIA program to brutally detain and interrogate terrorism suspects at covert sites abroad after 9/11. Her opponents said it wasn’t right to promote someone who supervised a black site in Thailand. LISA MASCARO (AP)

Israelis defend tactics Activists challenge use of lethal force against protesters who were unarmed at Gaza fence

Study: People in small towns are happiest

LOV EDAY M O R R I S A N D RU T H EG L A S H

Heaven is wide-open spaces — at least it is for most people, according to a massive new data set examining happiness in Canada. A team of happiness researchers at the Vancouver School of Economics and McGill University recently published a working paper on the geography of well-being in Canada. They compiled 400,000 responses to a pair of national surveys, allowing them to parse out distinctions in well-being at the level of more than 1,200 communities. They added data from other surveys and the Canadian census. Their chief finding is a striking association between population density and happiness. When the researchers ranked all 1,215 communities by average happiness, they found that average population density in the most miserable 20 percent of communities was more than eight times greater than in the happiest 20 percent of communities. “Life is significantly less happy in urban areas,” the paper concluded. One important caveat is that the authors aren’t making a strong statement about causality: There’s a clear association between low population density and reported happiness, but that doesn’t mean that low population density causes happiness.

Tear gas fumes waft Tuesday among Palestinian protesters along the border between Gaza and Israel.

Palestinian health ministry in Gaza said. All the dead were shot on the Palestinian side of the fence, and the border fence, though damaged, was never breached. No Israeli soldiers were reported injured. Israel has drawn broad international criticism for its alleged use of excessive force and is facing questions about why protests by mostly unarmed Palestinians ended in such horrific bloodshed. “Cutting or attacking the fence is an offense,” said Michael Sfard, an Israeli human rights lawyer. “It has to be countered, but countered with reasonable force. There is no meter that I know of that would put the safety of the border fence at the same importance of the life of a 14-year-old.” Sfard is representing human rights groups petitioning Israel’s Supreme Court to challenge the legality of the military’s live fire rules during demonstrations in

because they are part of the “armed conflict” between Israel and Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip. Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, a spokesman for the Israeli military, said soldiers would not be shooting to kill a fence-cutter such as the 14-year-old girl. He said it was a “hectic area with smoke and fires and lots of moving people.” At least 111 Palestinians have been killed during the seven weeks of protests, Gaza health officials say. The military says Hamas uses women and children as shields and, as a justification for the armed response, says that some of those killed were known militants. Human rights groups say that fear doesn’t justify the use of deadly force against unarmed protesters when they aren’t posing an immediate threat.

MAGHAZI, GAZA Fourteen-year-old Wisal Sheikh Khalil had wire cutters out and was trying to break through Gaza’s boundary fence into Israel when she was shot dead by Israeli soldiers on Monday, according to her younger brother, who was with her at the time. She was one of at least 60 Palestinians killed by Israeli troops during protests this week along the fence, according to local health officials. Israel’s sharpshooters, looking down from their nests on mounds of earth on the other side of the fence, have been permitted to use lethal force against those “endangering” the barrier, Israeli military officials say. These officials also say that Israeli soldiers have been allowed to use live ammunition to shoot “instigators” among “rioters” on the de facto border. In both cases, the orders are to aim for the legs, they say, though Khalil was shot in the head. The Israeli military declines to go into further detail about its rules of engagement, saying they are classified. But human rights groups say the few details provided by the Israeli military make clear that the orders given to soldiers are illegal. These groups accuse the Israeli military of not making enough effort to use other means of dispersing crowds. Israeli officials say the soldiers are operating within international law against a mob led by the militant group Hamas that wants to break into Israel and carry out terrorist attacks. Mike Smith and Justify won a wet Kentucky Derby. The Preakness could be rainy and muddy, too.

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Horse with heart: It’s easy to ‘Justify’ betting on encore Secretariat possessed the heart of a champion – literally. The 1973 Triple Crown winner’s greatness was later confirmed when an autopsy showed his 22-pound heart was nearly triple the norm. No wonder others couldn’t wear him down. Kentucky Derby winner Justify might have the same edge Saturday as the heavy favorite in the 143rd Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course. The 3-year-old colt could once again benefit from a wet track that lets the front-runner dampen his competitors’ spirits early by kicking mud in their faces before his stamina denies latecomers.

But Justify isn’t stealing races. He appears to have the same cardiovascular edge as Secretariat through a suspected superior heart capacity, according to his veterinarian, Kevin Dunlavy. “Even in the winner’s circle after the Derby, the horse wasn’t out of breath,” Dunlavy said. “He’d run a mile and a quarter like that, and to really catch his breath that quickly, it’s unique.” Dunlavy suggested that Justify’s cardiovascular capacity might make him superior to the competition. “One of the most remarkable things about him is his capacity for recovery respiratory-wise,” Dunlavy said. “He’ll go out and train, it could be a strong gallop, and

within minutes he’s completely caught his breath.” Justify’s Derby win was startling given that his hotly contested early pace of 22.24 seconds for the first quartermile was the sixth-fastest in the race’s 144 years despite the sloppy track. That kind of blistering start normally ends any chance to sustain that effort in the stretch. Justify’s final time of 2:04.20 was the Derby’s second-slowest in 28 years, but he won easily without strain. Justify is also larger than most rivals. He was 1,280 pounds entering the Derby for trainer Bob Baffert, who also

conditioned 2015 Triple Crown champion American Pharoah. Justify is 100 pounds heavier than Pharoah and nearly 150 pounds heavier than Secretariat was when he finished the Triple Crown. Who’s the Big Red now? “[Justify’s] got a little more in reserve than a lot of horses,” said WinStar Farm president and CEO Elliott Walden, who co-owns the colt. Amazingly, there isn’t a speck of Secretariat blood in Justify’s gene pool dating back five generations, although 1978 Triple Crown champion Seattle Slew is a distant sire. Justify’s sire, Scat Daddy, was a four-time stakes winner whose racing career ended with an injury in the 2007 Derby. He was a rising stallion before his sudden death last year. Justify’s combination of size and speed will let him win the Preakness easily. His heart, though, must be proven in the Belmont Stakes for a Triple Crown sweep alongside Secretariat’s. NATIONALS VS. DODGERS | 7:05 P.M. FRIDAY, MASN

Catcher depth now an issue

Wieters has surgery on hamstring, leaving Severino and ... who?

Fill-in catcher Pedro Severino has limited experience — and the level of talent behind him is very thin. AP AND THE WASHINGTON POST

NATIONALS Adding to their long list of significant injuries to position players this season, the Nationals announced Thursday that catcher Matt Wieters underwent surgery to repair his left hamstring. The Nationals, who were off Thursday, didn’t offer further details. Wieters had the procedure Wednesday. He was hurt last Friday while rounding first base on a single. He was placed on the 10-day disabled list the next day. Surgeries to repair torn hamstrings are not minor procedures, and the resulting recovery period is usually significant. Pedro Severino, who started only 14 games at catcher in the majors before this season, will assume the everyday load. He has started 21 games this season and is hitting .274 in 73 at-bats. Behind Severino, the Nationals have little experience, which means they will likely be in the market for a catcher. replace Wieters, leaving Tuffy Gosewisch and Jake Lowery with Class AAA Syracuse. Gosewisch, 34, has appeared in 137 major-league games, hitting .190. Lowery, who was promoted from Class A A to replace

Kieboom, hadn’t appeared in a game above Class AA as of Wednesday. Raudy Read probably would have been next in line, but he is serving an 80-game MLB suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing

substance. Veteran Miguel Montero was designated for assignment last month because of his poor defense and spotty hitting. And Jhonatan Solano is on the 60-day disabled list with an elbow injury. Wieters, 31, will be a free agent this winter. He is batting .231 with three home runs and a .727 OPS in 23 games this season. Those numbers represent an upgrade over last season, when he hit .225 with a .632 OPS. He was on the disabled list with an oblique strain last month, but missed just eight games. This recovery figures to be much longer. The Nationals were off Thursday after rain on Wednesday washed out their regularly scheduled home game against the New York Yankees as well as the completion of Tuesday’s suspended game. Both were rescheduled for June 18. The Nationals open a threegame series Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Nationals Park. Washington’s Max Scherzer, who was scheduled to start Wednesday’s regular game, will pitch the opener against righty Ross Stripling (0-1, 2.20 ERA). Scherzer, also a righty, is 7-1 with an a 1.69 ERA. (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

The NCAA said Thursday that it will allow, at least for now, states with legalized sports gambling to host NCAA championship events. The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling this week that overturned a federal law that barred most states from allowing gambling on professional and college sports. (AP)

Golden Knights turn Harper into geeked-out fan NATIONALS As a baseball superstar, Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper has legions of admirers. But the first major professional team to play in his hometown has taught him what it’s like to experience the ecstasy (and agony) of a true fan. Harper has fallen in love with the surprising first-year Golden Knights of Las Vegas. “It’s so new. It’s like, ‘Holy crap. We’ve got our own team,’ “ he said before the Knights defeated Winnipeg 4-2 on Wednesday night in Las Vegas to take a 2-1 lead in the NHL’s Western Conference finals. “This is a blast. This is unbelievable. “I don’t get nervous playing baseball. But I go home and sit on my couch and watch these guys, and my hands are sweating, and it’s just like, ‘God, I’m freaking out.’ “ Harper, 25, who played one season of junior college baseball before becoming a pro, has followed the titans of various sports, such as the Dallas Cowboys, L.A. Lakers and Duke basketball. But he says rooting for the Golden Knights, and experiencing hockey, is different. “I’ve never been such a big fan of a team in a sport,” he said. “You watch football for fantasy. You watch other sports, you’re like, ‘All right, cool.’ But hockey, it’s so much fun to watch. We’ve had the Caps here, and I like that. But having my own team to root for, there’s nothing better.” BARRY SVRLUGA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Deadpool is a fan of the John Cusack rom-com “Say Anything….” Who knew?

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Kill with kindness: Deadpool fights against despair My favorite line from my favorite TV show is the best piece of advice I’ve ever heard: “Always try to be nice. Never fail to be kind.” Deadpool is clearly also a fan of “Doctor Who,” because the red-spandexed, profane, overtly sexual, patently offensive master of the slice-anddice is the kindest superhero of them all. “Deadpool 2,” a sharp, surprisingly sweet, better-thanthe-original sequel, picks up pretty much where the previous film left off. Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) has embraced his new life as a superhero who drops F-bombs as easily as bad guys. He still talks to the audience, still has a snappy (usually rude) quip for every

conversation and still loves his girlfriend, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). This time, Deadpool is up against Cable (Josh Brolin), a time-traveling guy with a chip on his shoulder and one mission: to prevent the deaths of his wife and daughter. The best way to do that is, of course, to travel back in time and kill Firefist (Julian Dennison), the mutant who will eventually do the deed, while he’s still an awkward teenager. His mission is an honorable one: Who among us wouldn’t go forward or backward in time if it meant we could save a family member’s life? The thing is, Deadpool has developed a reluctant kinship with Firefist and believes that he can turn the kid away from a murderous path. Cable looks at Firefist and

Jennifer Lopez drops single “Dinero” with Cardi B

only sees a future murderer. Deadpool, having experienced a loss of his own, looks at the feared, misunderstood Firefist and sees a kid living in a world of hurt. You can be good without empathy, you can be nice without empathy, but you cannot be kind without it. Most superheroes are nice and most superheroes are good, but most of their motivations come from a desire to protect, to defend, to enact some level of morality that is greater than themselves. Deadpool doesn’t want to save Firefist out of a sense of justice but because he knows what it’s like to be Firefist. The modern resurgence of superheroes, like their historical origins, has reflected and responded to the world at large. In 2011, we got Captain

‘Deadpool 2’ (R, 119 min.) DIRECTOR: David Leitch STARS: Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin QUICK TAKE: This dark, comical

sequel is a fairly brilliant sendup of comic-book action movies, while also being an excellent example of one. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

America fighting for what’s best about America (and then in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” we saw him struggle with how much government surveillance keeps us safe but sacrifices liberty). We got Wonder Woman as we saw a shift in the relationship and representation of women and power. Netflix has brought back Luke Cage at a time when black men seem anything but bulletproof. So why do we need this Deadpool, and why do we need him now? The Deadpool of “Deadpool 2” doesn’t fight for big, ambiguous ideas, but for one kid in whom he sees himself. He has what so much of America, on every part of the political spectrum, is missing: the ability to try to empathize (not agree) with where someone else is coming from and why. Deadpool is not nice; his goodness is debatable. But he fights against despair, and that’s the worthiest battle of all. “NCIS: New Orleans” showrunner out after misconduct allegations

Grown-ups might not roll over for this talking-animal comedy, about an FBI agent (Will Arnett) who goes undercover with his K-9 partner (voiced by Chris “Ludacris” Bridges), but children almost surely will. With its fart jokes and smartalecky canines, “Show Dogs” is aimed at a young audience anyway. For dog-loving adults, well, it’s just engaging enough to make them prick up their ears. ‘Pope Francis: A Man of His Word’ PG, 96 min.

Following Pope Francis as he travels the globe visiting migrant camps, prisons, hospitals and gatherings of the faithful, filmmaker Wim Wenders gives viewers a vivid sense of what it’s like to be in the presence of a spiritual rock star, a man of enormous reach and power who has adopted a life of relative simplicity. Aging with grace and Viagra ‘Book Club’ celebrates love and sex after 60 with an all-star cast

‘The Seagull’ flutters from stage to screen

PARAMOUNT PICTURES

FILM REVIEW In “Book Club,” Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen and Mary Steenburgen play four best friends who have not only been in the same reading circle for 40 years, but have also achieved almost identical consumerist heights. Drinking white wine and arranging (but never actually consuming) bespoke appetizers against the backdrops of their immaculate Los Angeles kitchens, these characters’ lives might differ in the details, but not their prosperous, physically fit, almost freakishly well-preserved gestalt. Fonda plays Vivian, a wealthy hotel owner who prefers casual sex to commitment; Keaton plays Diane, whose husband died a year ago and whose kids are nagging her to move to Arizona, presumably to dry up and quietly senesce; Bergen’s Sharon is a divorced federal judge who gave up romance years ago; and Steenburgen plays Carol, a cheerful homemaker who longs to spice things up with her longtime husband, Bruce (Craig T. Nelson). As “Book Club” opens, the group has just finished Cheryl Strayed’s “Wild.” (The underwhelmed verdict: “She hiked. She lost her boot. She did heroin.”) Then someone suggests they tackle “Fifty Shades of Grey,” the piece of “Twilight” fan fiction

Candice Bergen, left, and Diane Keaton revel in a movie that actually has leading roles for older women.

‘Book Club’ (PG-13, 104 min.) DIRECTOR: Bill Holderman STARS: Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen IN A NUT SHELL: A quartet of lifelong friends find their love lives rejuvenated after adding “Fifty Shades of Grey” to the docket for their long-running book club.

that became a cultural phenomenon. Soon, the women are devouring E.L. James’ violet prose and polite violence with varying degrees of alarm and avidity. “Book Club,” which was directed by Bill Holderman, has been called “Sex and the City of a Certain Age,” although this city is notional in its realism

(welcome to an L.A. where no people of color live, work or even qualify as background players), and the libidinous activity is strictly PG-13. The script is a-bubble with witty, on-point observations about aging bodies and flagging sex drives, which enliven otherwise generic setups and sluggish, off-kilter pacing. Stodginess, an inherent hazard of the genre, is kept reasonably at bay with the help of choice cuts from Tom Petty, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan. Fonda brings her usual crisp focus to the role of a serial manizer. Keaton, resplendent in her signature menswear-chic, keeps the dithering mannerisms to a minimum. Steenburgen portrays

a convincing mashup of strained longing and perky optimism. And Bergen is the standout, laying into her character with impeccable timing and deadpan expressions. “Book Club” features terrific supporting performances as well, especially from love interests portrayed by Don Johnson, Richard Dreyfuss, Andy Garcia and Nelson, who is responsible for the film’s Big Talker of a sight gag, when his character runs afoul of a double dose of Viagra. As an example of fan-fic-fic, “Book Club” bears next to no resemblance to the steamy literature to which it pays mostly tepid homage. But it has brio, rueful humor and celebratory verve that is nearly impossible to resist. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FILM REVIEW Is it a contradiction to call “The Seagull,” the authoritative adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s 1896 play, a peerlessly wrought interpretation of a theater classic, while also less than a great movie? It’s certainly a very good one: perfectly cast, impeccably acted, and with direction by Michael Mayer that finds new insight into Chekhov’s subtextladen dialogue. But there is also something over-intellectualized and bloodless about this version. Set on a sprawling lakeside estate outside Moscow at the dawn of the 20th century, “The Seagull” introduces us to a motley group of people with little to do except torment one another. The protagonists who make up the four-chambered heart of Chekhov’s drama are some of the greatest roles in theater: the aging actress Irina (Annette Bening); her son Konstantin (Billy Howle), a young writer; his girlfriend, Nina (Saoirse Ronan), an aspiring actress; and the famous author Boris (Corey Stoll), Irina’s younger lover. Easier to admire than to love, this “Seagull” cracks Chekhov’s dialogue wide open, in a way that only film can, by bringing us up close and personal to the morose characters. But does that make for a transcendent moviegoing experience? As Irina says, of her gloomy son’s playwriting, “Since when has the exhibition of a morbid disposition been a new form of art?” MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’

‘BlacKkKlansman’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Nov. 2

EXPECTED RELEASE: Aug. 10

SUMMARY: There are lots of flashing lights and quick cuts, which is how you know this biopic of Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek) is about rock music. Malek looks eerily like the Queen frontman and we know he can act, but movies about real people can be risky. At least with this one we know there will be a great soundtrack. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Spike Lee’s latest is based on the kindof-true story of Ron Stallworth, a black cop (John David Washington) who teams with a white one (Adam Driver) to investigate the Ku Klux Klan. The pure 1970s look of the film is important because it reminds us that the KKK is definitely gone — a dead, forgotten remnant of a racist past. Right? K.P.K.

“You are setting the worst example to girls all over the world. No one should have to feel the need to suppress their appetite to fit ridiculous beauty standards.”

Cheryl comes to work every day with a smile on her face. She really brightens up the station and riders look forward to seeing her. With her bubbly personality and cheerful spirit, she makes Potomac a great place. Way to go, Cheryl!

AN INSTAGRAM COMMENTER, blasting Kim Kardashian West after the star posted a photo promoting appetite-suppressing lollipops. Fans were quick to call Kardashian West out for the ad, which they saw as harmful to young people looking up to her and those with eating disorders. Instagram removed, then restored the post before Kardashian West herself deleted it.

“I got irrationally angry at that ‘Millennials try Chick-fil-A for the first time’ video because how is that a generational thing?”

It’s OK to be nosy.

@JUSTINIVEY_, commenting on

Food Insider’s video showing a group of people eating Chick-fil-A for the first time. The video was hotly debated for including a former vegetarian and making the food about a generational divide by using “millennials” in the title. Twitter was also amused by a girl who described the waffle fries as “potato-y.”

DIFFICULT

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Dieter Addison, Hilary Duff’s neighbor, whom the actress targeted on social media this week, told Page Six that Duff’s boyfriend, Matthew Koma, attacked him Wednesday. “I tried to avoid his fist, but he hit me on the head,” Addison said. Koma’s rep denied the allegations. Duff has claimed that Addison has subjected her and her young son to secondhand smoke, late-night noise and garbage in the hallway.
