Brazil’s top judicial oversight board has decided it won’t sanction a judge who allegedly got angry at a bakery cafe waiter and demanded the man address him as “Your Honor.” Witnesses say Judge Dilermando Motta Pereira, upset that the waiter did not put ice in his cup, yelled at the employee, grabbed his shoulder and ordered the man to call him “Your Honor.” Pereira acknowledged the actions, but said he had been mistreated. A tow company freed the vehicle, but witnesses say the man wanted to drive it away, even though its engine was making strange sounds. (AP)

The twice-monthly flights help him decompress from his royal duties by focusing only on the task at hand, he said. (EXPRESS)

Truly, speaker’s best friend THE DISTRICT Devon Wallick had written nine drafts of his commencement speech. He had recited it for his professor, delivered it to his roommate and practiced it in front of a mirror “about 1,500 times.” But Wallick, a 22-year-old about to finish a master’s degree in accounting, had not yet rehearsed in front of Dexter. So on a recent Monday, he appeared at American University’s business school for a 3:30 p.m. appointment with the pooch, an English springer spaniel with giant white paws, soulful brown eyes and floppy ears that are soft to the touch and, apparently, good speech-listening devices. “Who says I have to pick between a love of people and a love of numbers?” Wallick asked, kneeling to pet Dexter as he read from the address he would deliver that weekend to fellow graduate students at the Kogod School of Business. The dog, reclining on a leather bench, licked Wallick’s right hand. That is, you might say, just

part of Dexter doing his job. He is one of eight Washington-area canines on the business school’s roster of “audience dogs,” a volunteer corps whose main duties are to be attentive and nonjudgmental sounding boards for university students nervous about presentations they must eventually give to humans. The program began last year and is thought to be the first of its kind at a U.S. university, said Caron Martinez, director of the Kogod Center for Business

Communications. Martinez cites research on the calming effects that dogs, even unfamiliar ones, can have on people, although she said she knows the science on this topic isn’t rock-solid. But the dozens of students who have participated — and any AU student with a presentation to deliver can book 30 minutes with a dog — have reported a notable decrease in nervousness on post-session surveys, she said. And besides, Martinez noted, the best way to ace a speech is to rehearse. “How do you get students to practice? Any way you can,” she said. “Dog or no dog, that makes you a better public speaker.” There are some staff and faculty members who think the whole thing is “a gimmick,” Martinez said. But when asked whether students come because the canine counselors are, well, very cute, she was firm. Most participants are business students, and they are “efficiency and transactional-minded” people who would not waste their time merely on cute, Martinez said. Wallick jumped in to agree. “It’s very much a cost-benefit analysis,” he said. KARIN BRULLIARD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Report: D.C. officials skirted school lottery

Special treatment given to cabinet members for placement of children
SafeTrack will shutter part of Red Line LARRY FRENCH (GETTY IMAGES)
THE DISTRICT Former D.C. Public Schools chancellor Kaya Henderson routinely helped well-connected parents — including two senior aides to Mayor Muriel Bowser — bend or break the rules of the District’s notoriously competitive school lottery to enroll their children at coveted schools, according to a confidential report obtained by The Washington Post. The report, based on an investigation by the D.C. Inspector General’s Office, describes in detail how Henderson used her power as head of the school system to place the children of those with political clout at campuses they could not otherwise access through the random lottery, which every year leaves thousands of families on waiting lists for their desired schools. Inspector General Daniel Lucas found that Henderson misused her authority by giving preferential treatment to seven of 10 people who requested special school placements for their children during the 2015 lottery season. The investigation did not examine the rest of Henderson’s tenure from November 2010 to September 2016. Henderson acknowledged

openly in interviews with investigators that she gave special treatment to the children of government officials. Asked about the help she gave City Administrator Rashad M. Young, a top Bowser cabinet official whose salary is $295,000, Henderson said D.C. officials “do not necessarily get paid as much as we should.” The former chancellor bestowed such favors even as she dismissed pleas for special consideration from those with less influence, such as a deaf Vietnamese immigrant whose request that her daughter be allowed to attend a school where she could practice sign language was rejected. The findings could shake public confidence in the city’s school lottery, which has been held up
as a national model. It also raises troubling questions for Bowser, whose defense of her cabinet officials’ roles in the scandal is undercut by details in the report. Henderson did not return calls requesting a comment. A nationally prominent educator, Henderson stepped down at the start of the current school year. In an interview Wednesday, Bowser insisted that her top deputies did nothing wrong. “This is not an investigation of any parent,” the mayor said. “Where the inspector general was pointing to and we have recognized — and have acted — is on a system that is too loose and needs to be tightened up.” PE TER JA MI S ON A ND A A RON C . The western end of the Red Line will shut down for nine days starting June 17 for Metro’s last SafeTrack surge on a 5-mile stretch between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook stations, the agency announced Thursday. During that period, the Shady Grove and Rockville stations will be closed to train service. Instead, shuttle buses will carry riders from those stations to the Twinbrook station, where they will be able to board inbound Red Line trains. In August, the agency had 13 days of weekday single-tracking and weekend shutdowns. Metro officials are suggesting that riders who usually arrive at the Shady Grove or Rockville stations instead opt to board at the Twinbrook, White Flint or Grosvenor-Strathmore stations. (TWP)

Trump denies obstruction President says he didn’t urge Comey to ease up on Flynn investigation
Deputy AG knew of Trump’s plans to fire Comey
SUSAN WALSH (AP)
POLITICS President Trump on Thursday denied ever asking FBI Director James Comey to back off his agency’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as into the role played by former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Asked whether he urged Comey to ease up on the Flynn investigation, Trump said at a news conference, “No, no,” before ordering the media to move on to the “next question.” Earlier this week, there were several news reports that Trump made the request regarding Flynn during a February meeting in the Oval Office. At his joint news conference with President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia, the president reiterated his claim that the Justice Department’s decision Wednesday to appoint a special counsel to look into possible collusion with Russia was “a witch hunt,” saying he had never colluded with the Russians. “I respect the move, but the entire thing has been a witch hunt, and there is no collusion between — certainly myself and my campaign, but I can only speak for myself and the Russians. Zero,” Trump said. “Believe me, there’s no collusion. Russia is fine, but whether it’s Russia or anybody else, my total priority,

believe me, is the United States of America.” Trump said earlier in the day that he believes the decision to appoint a special counsel “hurts our country terribly.” In addition to contradicting Comey’s account of the encounter, Trump’s comments also put him into stark opposition with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed the special counselor and whose memo criticizing Comey was initially used as justification by the White House to explain the president’s decision to fire his FBI director. During the news conference, Trump contradicted both his own account and that of Rosenstein. “Director Comey was very
Venezuela sanctions Just hours after President Trump raised concerns about recent unrest that has plagued Venezuela at a joint news conference with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on Thursday, the U.S. Department of Treasury slapped new sanctions on eight members of Venezuela’s Supreme Court, freezing their assets. unpopular with most people,” Trump said. “I also got a very, very strong recommendation, as you know, from the deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein.” The president also expressed surprise that he had not received bipartisan support for his decision to fire Comey; called the suggestion he had done anything potentially worthy of criminal charges “totally ridiculous”; and repeated his assertion that he had never helped the Russians interfere in the 2016 presidential election. “There was no collusion,” he said. “And everybody, even my enemies have said, there is no collusion.” ASHLEY PARKER AND DAVID NAKAMURA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trump ‘close’ to naming new FBI boss
President Trump said Thursday he was “very close” to naming a new FBI director to replace James Comey. He also confirmed that former Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman was a top candidate for the job. Trump and Lieberman, left, discussed the position at the White House on Wednesday. Trump also interviewed former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating, former top FBI official Richard McFeely and acting FBI director Andrew McCabe for the post. (AP)
Ex-CIA Director John Brennan to testify before House intel committee next week on Russia election meddling
POLITICS Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, above, told the full Senate he knew that former FBI Director James Comey would be fired before he wrote his controversial memo that the White House initially used as justification for President Trump’s firing of the FBI director. Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., said that Rosenstein told the senators that he knew on Monday, the day before Comey was fired, that Trump was going to fire him. He also told them that he was not pressured into writing his memo. “He learned the president’s decision to fire him and then he wrote his memo with his rationale,” Durbin said. Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said she would reserve judgment about Rosenstein’s comments to the senators because they still haven’t seen all of the relevant documents. She added that Rosenstein “was very careful about not going into any details surrounding the removal of Comey because he wants to give Robert Mueller the opportunity to make an independent decision” about how to proceed. Rosenstein’s closed-door briefing with the Senate on Thursday came a day after he appointed Mueller, a former prosecutor who served as FBI director from 2001 to 2013, as special counsel to take over the investigation into possible coordination between Trump’s associates and Russian officials. nation+world Brutalized children are among 52 dead after savage assault SYRIA The Islamic State attacked several government-held villages in central Syria on Thursday, capturing at least one of them. The violence left 52 people dead, including more than two dozen women and children, some of whom were beheaded, as well as Syrian troops, state media, medical officials and an opposition monitoring group said. The attack in the central Hama province targeted villages where most residents belong to the
Ismaili branch of Shiite Islam, raising fears the extremists might massacre them, as they have other religious minorities. The villages are located near the town of Salamiyeh. State news agency SANA said militants stormed homes in the southern part of the Aqareb al-Safi village, adding that government forces eventually repelled them. The head of the National Hospital in Salamiyeh said the hospital received 52 bodies, including 11 women and 17 children. Rami Razzouk, a coroner at the hospital, said at least nine children were beaten with heavy objects such as bricks or stones on their heads or necks. Razzouk said

A spike in failed drug tests leads to hiring woes Workers at McLane drive forklifts and load hefty boxes into trucks. The grocery supplier needs people who will stay alert — but prospective hires keep failing drug screens. “Some weeks this year, 90 percent of applicants would test positive for something,” ruling them out for the job, said Laura Stephens, an HR manager in Denver for the company. Job applicants are testing positive for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamine and heroin at the highest rate in 12 years, according to a new report from Quest Diagnostics. An analysis of about 10 million workplace drug screens from across the country last year found positive results from urine samples increased from 4 percent in 2015 to 4.2 percent in 2016. Although state laws have relaxed, employers haven’t eased up on testing for pot. Colorado and Washington, which became the first two states to legalize weed in 2012, showed the highest increase in positive tests. Urine screens that detected pot rose 11 percent in Colorado and 9 percent in Washington. “Some employers are extremely worried about filling jobs,” said Curtis Graves, a manager at the Mountain States Employers Council in Colorado. “Work that is considered ‘safety sensitive’ typically requires that test, and that’s not changing.” DANIELLE PAQUETTE

For first time, U.S. airstrike hits pro-Assad forces
President refuses to resign amid corruption allegations
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, a moderate within Iran’s political system, has history on his side as Iranians vote for president Friday. No incumbent president has failed to win re-election since 1981. The scant polling data that is available suggest the cleric, 68, will come out on top among the four candidates, though an outright win by Rouhani is by no means assured. Failure to secure a majority would send the two top vote-getters into a runoff next Friday. A Rouhani victory could lead to further loosening of limits on personal freedom, while a hard-line win could set Iran up for renewed confrontation with the West. (AP)
A U.S. airstrike Thursday struck pro-Syrian government forces that the coalition said posed a threat to American troops and allied rebels operating near the border with Jordan. It was the first such close confrontation between U.S. forces and fighters backing President Bashar al-Assad; the coalition had thus far kept operations focused on Islamic State militants and an al-Qaeda-linked group. The coalition said “apparent” Russian attempts to stop pro-Assad forces from moving toward Tanf failed, along with warning shots and a show of force. The region around Tanf is considered a de-conflicted zone. (AP)
Brazilian President Michel Temer on Thursday rejected calls for his resignation, saying he will fight allegations that he endorsed the paying of hush money to an ex-lawmaker jailed for corruption. Temer spoke in a national address after a newspaper reported Wednesday night that he was recorded supporting payments to former Lower House Speaker Eduardo Cunha. “At no time did I authorize the paying of anyone,” he said. “I did not buy anybody’s silence.” On Thursday, Brazil’s main stock index dropped 10 percent and Brazil’s currency lost 8 percent of its value against the U.S. dollar. Passionate supporters pay little attention to revelations rocking D.C.
POLITICS President Trump’s loyal backers say they don’t know, don’t believe or don’t care about the explosive revelations that forced the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to investigate possible collusion between Russia and the Republican campaign. The tumult that began last week with the firing of FBI Director James Comey has consumed Washington, roiling the White House and putting congressional Republicans on the defensive. Not so in Trump strongholds. “I tuned it out,” Michele Velardi, 44, said during a break from her job at a Staten Island, N.Y., hair salon. “I didn’t want to be depressed. I don’t want to feel that he’s not doing what he said, so I just choose to not listen.” A Quinnipiac University poll showed that 61 percent of people in the U.S. believe Trump is dishonest, but there’s little evidence of significant cracks among Trump’s most passionate
supporters. In Denison, Iowa, Mark Feller, 60, said he would support Trump’s 2020 re-election without question, despite concerns over what Feller described as chaos in the Oval Office. The furniture dealer doesn’t believe reports that the president asked Comey to back off his investigation before firing him. “If it were true, it would bother me. But I don’t think it’s true,” Feller said. In Rutledge, Ga., a town of about 800 people in a county that gave Trump nearly 70 percent of its vote, Robbie Foy, 27, said he hasn’t paid close attention to the news in recent days. He’s not backing off his initial reasons for supporting the president. Chief among them: his sustained disdain for Trump’s opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton. “Trump’s not in it for the money. He’s got plenty of money,” Foy said. Clinton, he added, “was in it for herself.” For many of the Trump faithful, even six months after the 2016 election, their fierce opposition to Clinton remains fresh. Trump isn’t perfect, they say, but he’s far better than what
JOSEPH AMODEO, 19 | The college student from Staten Island, N.Y., offered a stern message to Trump’s critics. “If you’re wishing for him to fail, you’re basically wishing for the pilot of the plane to crash,” he said. “You just gotta stick by him and hopefully he does things that benefit everyone.”
the alternative would have been. The attitude was prevalent on the streets of Staten Island, where Trump beat Clinton last fall by nearly 17 percentage points. State Assemblyman Ron Castorina, who represents Staten Island, refers to his community as “Trump Country.” He blamed Trump’s problems on what he calls irresponsible media coverage that’s “damaging the country as a whole.” Trump supporters like him, he says, aren’t giving up on their president. “Not only have I not heard
of anyone turning their backs, I’ve seen people become more in solidarity with the president because they feel he’s getting a raw deal,” Castorina said. Andrew Ottrando, a 56-year-old truck driver from Staten Island, said, “The Comey stuff is a joke.” Could anything persuade him to abandon Trump? “If he gases his own people, yeah, I would be against him,” Ottrando said, saying afterward that he was only joking. No cracks in Trump country
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said Thursday that he will leave Congress on June 30, citing “big changes” in his personal life in a letter. His departure comes earlier than anticipated — the Utah Republican had said in April that he would not seek re-election in 2018. His departure opens up one of the most powerful posts on Capitol Hill amid investigations of the Trump administration. (TWP)

1940-2017 Roger Ailes, the architect of conservative-focused TV news, died Thursday at 77. He was the longtime chairman and chief executive of the Fox News Channel until his abrupt ouster last year amid sexual harassment allegations. Ailes died after a May 10 fall at his Palm Beach, Fla., home caused bleeding on the brain. A former GOP operative to candidates including Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and a onetime adviser to President Trump, he was a skilled showman and a savvy political operator. Over two decades, Ailes built Fox News into a politically influential juggernaut. He defined the channel in opposition to the traditional journalism of CNN and the liberal bent of MSNBC, bringing Fox from a distant third to clear dominance, riding to the top along the wave of public dismay over President Bill Clinton’s affair with a White House intern. Ailes’ reign at Fox ended abruptly in 2016, in the middle of the presidential campaign, after an on-air host at Fox News, Gretchen Carlson, alleged that Ailes had sabotaged her career when she refused to have sex with him. Twenty-five other women, including Megyn Kelly, then came forward to say that Ailes had sexually harassed them over his five decades in the TV business. MARC FISHER (TWP)

Preakness attendance continues to grow, but Pimlico’s infrastructure is breaking down.

Dreaming prepared for another win
RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU
Goodbye Pimlico? Preakness needs a major makeover Pimlico race track has hosted the hooves of legends. Secretariat and 11 other Triple Crown champions have kicked back on rivals in the Preakness Stakes. It’s where Seabiscuit beat War Admiral in a famed 1938 showdown. And on Saturday, the second oldest racetrack in the country will host the 142nd Preakness. Despite all of it’s history, the Baltimore venue has problems that could force a move for the middle leg of the Triple Crown. The Preakness Stakes at Laurel Park? That’s possible in the near future. According to a report published in February by the Maryland Stadium Authority,
Pimlico is “antiquated” and “in need of substantial renovations.” The report’s maximum estimate of the cost of those improvements is $322 million. Attendance continues to grow at the state’s largest sporting event — the Preakness drew 135,256 last year. But Old Hilltop is running out of time. Saturday’s race headlined by Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming could be one of the final times the Preakness is at Pimlico before aging infrastructure forces the venue to close and the iconic race to move to Laurel. Both venues are owned by the Maryland Jockey Club, and Laurel Park is the only other two-mile-thoroughbred racetrack in the state. The Maryland Stadium Authority review, which is
the first piece of a continuing report, projected that a new grandstand and clubhouse are needed, along with an expanded stable area and parking lots for the Preakness to remain relevant. Pimlico needs a major bailout, a combination of public and private investment, to save the 147-year-old track. Pending completion of the stadium authority study, Pimlico’s fate could be decided as soon next year by the state legislature. Lawmakers must fund at least a significant part of the restoration. Historically, they’ve been reluctant to help the industry without many years of discussions. Pimlico doesn’t have that much time. While the track has deep ties to Baltimore, Pimlico has steadily shortened its racing dates annually from four months in the 1990s to 12 days this spring. Investing more than $300 million for just two weeks of racing annually seems like a poor investment. It’s finally time to create the supertrack industry leaders have been discussing for 25 years, one that could help restore Maryland to its once “Lion

of the Mid-Atlantic” status. The Preakness should’ve moved to Laurel 20 years ago. Expanding Laurel into a modern gaming facility would be a smarter investment. Laurel has lakes in the infield that would reduce the Preakness crowd to somewhere around 60,000, cutting into the people that only go to the event for the infield concerts. Bettors know decisions based on emotions lead to torn tickets and lost dreams. Maybe it’s time to let Pimlico rest in peace.
Always Dreaming has quieted doubters in the lead-up to Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. The Kentucky Derby winner’s morning gallops have been strong. He’s emptied his feed tub and hasn’t lost weight or shown any distress. “He’s been training great for a long time now and he continues to show us the same things he was showing us leading up to the Derby,” trainer Todd Pletcher said. “He’s full of himself. He’s energetic. He’s showing us everything we hoped he would.” The heavy favorite has little to fear from a field of nine competitors that includes a lackluster group of 3-year-old colts. As long as he starts well, Always Dreaming should wear the winner’s wreath of black-eyed Susans. R.S.

PIRATES 10, NATIONALS 4 The 40th game of the Nationals’ season was an unflattering representation of their year at the unofficial quarter poll. They lost to the Pirates 10-4, unable to find enough offense to overcome a faltering bullpen Thursday in Pittsburgh. Tanner Roark wrestled himself through five innings, a common theme for him through his first nine starts, and the relief corps found its daily dose of calamity. The Nationals fell to 25-15, still the only team over .500 in the NL East.
Last season, Roark went at least seven innings in 18 of his 33 starts. This season, he’s lasted seven innings once. On Thursday, he challenged Adam Frazier, the first hitter he faced, with a firstpitch fastball. Frazier singled to right, setting up Josh Bell for a two-run homer. Roark (3-2) threw 114 pitches in five-plus innings, allowed seven runs on eight hits and walked four, tying a career high. His early exit forced Blake Treinen into action for the third straight day. He allowed a double that scored two runs, and Enny Romero gave up two more. Daniel Murphy hit a second-inning homer, and Adam Lind hit an RBI double in the fourth, but the Nationals left six runners on base. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

John Wall earns all-NBA honors for his first time WIZARDS Washington point guard John Wall was named Thursday to the all-NBA third team, landing the prestigious honor for the first time in his seven-year career. The first team includes Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kawhi Leonard, LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The second team has Stephen Curry, Isaiah Thomas, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Rudy Gobert. The other third-teamers are DeMar DeRozan, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green and DeAndre Jordan. The all-NBA teams are voted on by the media. This season, Wall averaged career highs in points (23.1), assists (10.7), steals (2.0), and field goal shooting (45.1 percent). With the all-NBA nod, Wall, who made nearly $17 million this season, now qualifies for a massive pay raise under the “designated player veteran extension,” a part of the new labor agreement that applies to players entering their eighth or ninth season with either the team that drafted them or traded for them while on their rookie contract. In July, Wall will become eligible to sign a four-year extension that would allow him to be paid a max contract at 35 percent of the salary cap beginning in the 2019-20 season — the year after his current contract expires and a year earlier than he would otherwise be eligible to get that rate. How to Prevent Pet Stains
odors:
FRESH STAINS Has your pet just left a puddle on the living room carpet? It can be salvaged if you act fast. You need to blot the urine as soon as possible. Use paper towels and newspaper to do the trick. First
INSTRUCTIONS: Pour brown sugar into a clean bottle or container. Add the peels and water. Close with a lid/cap and give a good shake. Open the lid halfway to let the gases out of the bottle. Store in a cool, dry place for three months. Using an enzyme cleaner, you can remove pet urine odors and stains, dissuading your pooch or kitten from marking their territory over and over. Pour a small amount of the cleaner into a spray bottle and dilute it with water. Apply onto the stain and let sit. Just so you know, enzymes have a very short shelf life once you take them out of the bottle. That’s why you should place them directly onto the affected area the moment you dilute them with water.
add the paper towel and follow up with newspaper, creating two thick layers. When the area is no longer soaking, rinse well with cool water. You might want to toss the paper towel and newspaper into your pet’s “bathroom area” or litter box. They will serve as reminders that this is the right spot to eliminate.
OLD STAINS Stick with carpet stain removers. Just follow the instructions on the back of the bottle. When you get rid of the stain, and the affected area is totally dry, apply pet odor neutralizer. Unless you remove the odor, your pet
might be tempted to urinate in the same spot again. Even though you can’t smell any remaining odor, your pet will be able to recognize its own urine. Moreover, make the “bathroom zone” attractive to your pets while you try to make their favorite spots
Check with your vet. Your pet’s behavior may be due to medical reasons. The sooner your vet examines your pet, the better. If you want to keep your furry friends from marking their territories, you can also use storebought products. Consider spaying or neutering your pet. This will cut down on marking habits. Prevent access to some spots in your home if your pet marks them repeatedly. Don’t get discouraged. You can prevent pet stains and odor with repeated efforts. Enjoy the time spent with your furry pals and keep stains out of the house. ■ By Patricia Cornwell for Apartment Showcase

Nothing to scream about here FILM REVIEW Michael Fassbender delivers a crafty, Cronenbergian double performance in “Alien: Covenant” that almost makes the movie worth its weight. Almost. A largely turgid, often thoroughly unpleasant affair, this sequel-to-the-prequel — a followup to Ridley Scott’s 2012 “Prometheus” — attempts to flesh out further just how the drooling, tentacled, face-sucking beastie of Scott’s game-changing 1979 film “Alien” came to be. Here, fans of the original and its sequels will be gratified, but they’ll have to slog through almost an hour of tiresome, workaday plotting to get to the gory stuff. The setup here is gratingly cliche: In 2104, a ship called the Covenant, carrying 15 crew members and 2,000 passengers seeking to colonize a distant planet, is
being tended to by a droid named Walter (Fassbender) when a neutrino burst brings down the power grid. After the crew’s captain is burned in his sleeping pod, his widow, Daniels (Katherine Waterston), and the ship’s second-incommand, Oram (Billy Crudup), lead the team on an improvised mission to explore. What could go wrong? Plenty, as experienced viewers well know, which makes Scott’s attempts at setting up a routine atmosphere fall flat. Waterston, with a thin-lipped, solemn demeanor, does her best to anticipate the strong heroine personified by Sigourney Weaver in the first “Alien.” But she’s asked to do little more than warn the man in charge, then look tearfully on as her warnings come disastrously to fruition. Fassbender acquits himself impressively as both the American-accented droid Walter and as the James Mason-like David. But even he can’t overcome writing that drew guffaws at a preview screening. “Alien: Covenant” ultimately
PG-13, 96 min.
Severe Combined Immunodeficiency is a real thing. The teen romance “Everything, Everything,” about a girl with SCID, is not. Amandla Stenberg plays Maddy, who is confined to her home for fear of dying from a common cold, while Nick Robinson plays Olly, the Cute Boy Next Door. Both are enormously appealing young actors, but charisma only goes so far in a story so sterile and wildly far-fetched. TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX

MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)
Sure, Carmen Ejogo (bottom) seems undeniably terrified of something — likely the monster (top) of course — but that doesn’t mean you will be.

comes down to the shocking effects that made the first film so memorable. Once the title character appears, the spurt and gush and blood start to flow. Presumably, Scott is giving the audience what it wants, but purists may wonder whether simply rewatching “Alien” would have provided scarier, more genuine jolts. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The only Drunk Uncle we’ll actually miss having around After nine seasons, Bobby Moynihan will leave NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” following this weekend’s season finale. The actor and comic is bowing out after CBS picked up the pilot for “Me, Myself & I,” a sitcom starring Moynihan and John Larroquette, Deadline reported. Moynihan is the second-longest tenured “SNL” cast member behind Keenan Thompson. (AP) Dennis Quaid to play George W. Bush in FX’s “Katrina: American Crime Story”
‘Paris Can Wait’ PG, 92 min.
An ode to food, France, film and flirtation, “Paris Can Wait” is a creamy but not entirely disposable bonbon of a movie. It follows Anne (Diane Lane), wife to a hotshot movie producer (Alec Baldwin), who finds herself in a car trip from Cannes to Paris. It’s a piece of cinematic escapism for those who relish the thrill that comes from digging into a warm croissant with butter and jam. A.H.

Good connection: ‘Long Haul’ offers a lesson for moms Obviously, I remember the moment when I officially became a mom. The thing is, as they were yanking a baby boy out of me, I was mildly distracted by the nurse on the phone who was calling for two units of blood to be brought up to the operating room that I had been rushed into when things started to go south. Over the nearly nine years since, there have been moments of momhood: times of stress, times of joy, times when I opened my mouth and, to my horror, my mother’s voice came out. I got another wallop watching “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul,” based on one of the books in a series that, along with the “Captain Underpants” books, my son considers his gospel. In the film, the Heffley family, including preteen protagonist Greg (Jason Drucker), heads out on a fourday road trip. Enough things go wrong — gross motels, car trouble, a newly acquired baby pig that does what baby pigs do — that one must wonder which automotive gypsy the family ticked off to have such a curse befall them.
I see a lot of my son in Greg, most notably his near-constant desire for digital entertainment and his devotion to YouTubers (like the fictional one played by Joshua Hoover in the film) who upload videos of themselves playing games and somehow make a career out of it. The big punch, though, was seeing so much of myself in mom Susan (Alicia Silverstone). After getting over my surprise that Silverstone has aged (quite gracefully, I must say), I slowly realized that what Greg views as his mom placing obstacles in the way of his digital happiness, I viewed as … parenting. Susan insists that everyone hand over their devices for the entirety of the trip, a move that struck me as extreme — Mommy needs her Angry Birds Blast time — but understandable at its core. Later, Susan finds out that Greg has managed to free his phone from her clutches. She says she just wanted them to spend time together, to connect. Greg says it’s not that he doesn’t want to do just that, but that Susan simply isn’t interested in connecting on his terms. Like everyone else, Greg wants to talk about things that interest him — video games and funny

videos. Susan thought Greg’s hobbies were what was distancing him from his family; in fact, it was her refusal to see those things as valid interests that created the gulf. I still don’t understand the
appeal of Minecraft, and I think it will be impossible for me to ever join my son in worship at the altar of YouTube star DanTDM. And I don’t think my son will ever be into cross-stitching or “Call the Midwife.” But we can find common ground in Harry Potter and playing Lego Dimensions together. Susan reminded me that connecting with a kid has to be a two-way street — one that might be paved with Pokémon cards. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby.

1964-2017 Chris Cornell, a key figure in the grunge rock movement as the banshee-voiced singer in the seminal Seattle band Soundgarden, committed suicide Wednesday after playing a soldout concert with the group. Cornell, 52, was found dead early Thursday in his room at the MGM Grand Detroit, police said. The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death a suicide by hanging. “His wife, Vicky, and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing,” said Brian Bumbery, a publicist for Cornell. Alongside the likes of Nirvana, Mudhoney and Alice in Chains, Soundgarden was one of the most important bands in the 1990s grunge movement that ushered in a new era of rock. Cornell, who had a complicated relationship with his rock-and-roll fame, was the mesmerizing frontman with a flowing mane and piercing blue eyes. He was best known for his songwriting and throaty, multi-octave voice, which he once called “unapologetically male.” “For me to make a connection with music,” he told Rolling Stone in 2015, “it has to either have a visceral nature, whether it’s anger or aggression or that kind of passion which shows up in rock music, or there has to be some sort of melancholy and introspection, something about it that makes you feel your own pain.” TRAVIS M. ‘The Emoji Movie’
‘Home Again’
EXPECTED RELEASE: July 28
EXPECTED RELEASE: Sept. 8
SUMMARY: Gene (T.J. Miller) was born to be meh. As in the “meh” emoji. Alas, Gene often feels not-meh, but appearing in a text message wearing the wrong face is a crime punishable by deletion. Honestly, it looks like the funniest part of this movie will be the credits, because then you’ll get to see Patrick Stewart listed as Poop. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: It’s kind of unclear what’s happening in this trailer, but we’re going to give it a shot. Alice (Reese Witherspoon) is newly separated from her husband (Michael Sheen) and is sad about it. Then she meets some guys, has a lot to drink and then is less sad! Then she starts sleeping with at least one or possibly more of them; it’s hard to tell. K.P.K.

“JFK was literally shot in the face.” @SORTABAD, pointing out to President Trump on Twitter that former President John F. Kennedy was definitely treated worse than Trump. On Wednesday, Trump asserted at the U.S. Coast Guard commencement that “No politician in history ... has been treated worse or more unfairly.” People responded by tweeting pictures of JFK, Abraham Lincoln and Nelson Mandela — all treated much worse.
“What a kind, good spirited, well behaved, human, normal looking guy.” @LZAYCHELOU, tweeting about a clip of former President George W. Bush photobombing a sports reporter during a Texas Rangers baseball game. Holding a beer and wearing an untucked short-sleeved, button-down shirt, Bush casually threw a “hi” at reporter Emily Jones. She tweeted that it was her “most favorite photobomb ever.”

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Things are not likely to progress exactly according to plan, but you aren’t going to be dissatisfied with what comes to you during the day. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can put a certain unusual skill to the test. This is one that, in the past, you may have tried to hide. No more of that. CANCER (June 21-July 22) The devil is in the details, as usual. Focus on the fine points, and be sure that your communication efforts are fully thought out. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Jennifer Lawrence has acknowledged on social media that a tabloid site’s video of her dancing on a stripper pole is real, but the actress wrote that she’s not sorry about it. The video, posted by Radar Online on Wednesday, shows Lawrence dancing on a pole in what looks to be a dimly lit bar. Lawrence responded on Facebook that she was celebrating one of her best friend’s birthdays during the night the video was taken and dropped her “paranoia guard” to have fun. “I’m not going to apologize, I had a BLAST that night,” she wrote before adding, “I’m not gonna lie, I think my dancing’s pretty good. Even with no core strength.” (AP)
