An obese wild monkey who gorged himself on junk food and soda left behind by tourists near Bangkok has been rescued and placed on a strict, healthy diet. Then the woman allegedly gave the clerk a note saying she had a gun, took the store’s cash and fled. (AP)

Port-a-potty biz flush in D.C. Trump-era protests have the city’s portable toilet industry booming

MELINA MARA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT President Trump vowed on the campaign trail to boost economic growth and be the “greatest jobs producer that God ever created.” His economic legacy is far from sealed, but it’s safe to say he has made at least one industry flush: the Washington region’s portable toilet industry. The Trump presidency has brought an increased number of protests — and, yes, bladders and bowels — to the Mall. Protest organizers are renting record numbers of port-a-potties for demonstrators to relieve themselves between chants and marches. The National Park Service, which oversees the Mall, requires demonstration permit holders to provide one portable toilet for every 300 participants, 20 percent of which must be wheelchairaccessible, said Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the agency. During January’s Women’s March on Washington, for instance, that meant nearly 600 privies — an entirely insufficient number that snarled throngs of

antsy protesters in long bathroom lines. Rob Weghorst, chief operating officer of Virginia-based portable toilet rental company Don’s Johns, said the increase in political advocacy has translated to booming times. His company, which recently acquired former competitor Gene’s Johns Toilets, provided toilets for the Women’s March, the Peoples Climate March and others on the Mall this year. “All I’m going to say is that we love the activism. It’s made for an interesting and lucrative spring.” The NPS said it has seen more than a 30 percent increase in permitted protests compared with last year, with some attracting tens of thousands of people. Frederick Hill III, owner of the District-based Gotta Go Now, says his port-a-potty company has seen about a 40 percent increase in revenue each month of 2017 compared with a year earlier. So far in May, business is running 50 percent ahead of last year. Both Weghorst and Hill said long-term rentals on construction sites still account for the bulk of their business. But Hill said protests are particularly fruitful since the events typically last only a day and the toilets — most often associated with foul smells and grimy conditions — sustain only minimal damage, but carry a pretty rental price tag. Depending on the bulk of the order, Gotta Go Now charges between $85 and $125 per toilet, including delivery and pickup. “It seems that there are protests every week that we are doing,” Hill said. “We’re quite active with them.” PERRY STEIN

THE DISTRICT Former House speaker Newt Gingrich, a stalwart supporter of President Trump, used a Sunday morning appearance on “Fox and Friends” to spread the conspiracy theory that former Democratic National Committee staffer Seth Rich was killed last year to cover up the true story of how WikiLeaks obtained tens of thousands of hacked Democratic Party emails. “We have this very strange story now of this young man

who worked for the Democratic National Committee, who apparently was assassinated at 4 in the morning, having given WikiLeaks something like 53,000 emails and 17,000 attachments,” Gingrich said. With no pushback from the Fox hosts, Gingrich shared innuendos that got new life last week after Rod Wheeler, an occasional contributor to Fox News whom a conservative donor had paid to probe Rich’s death, told local Fox affiliate WTTG 5 that he had new evidence. On Monday, Wheeler claimed to have sources at either the FBI or the D.C. police department who apparently knew that evidence existed of

Health officials are warning residents in the D.C. area that a patient admitted to a local hospital has been diagnosed with measles. The Maryland health department says the patient was admitted with the highly contagious virus to Children’s National Medical Center in D.C. Officials say the patient contracted measles outside the U.S. and developed symptoms in the country. The patient has been in isolation since May 13, but spent time in public spaces before the diagnosis, including at the Prince George’s Hospital Center Emergency Department, the Department of Social Services Building in Hyattsville, Md., and on a public transit bus. A University of Maryland student was charged Sunday with fatally stabbing a visiting student on campus in what police have described as an unprovoked attack that rattled the school over graduation weekend. Sean Christopher Urbanski, 22, of Severna Park, Md., faces charges of first- and second-degree murder as well as first-degree assault for the alleged attack that took place early Saturday, police said. Police said a Bowie State University student was with two friends near a bus stop at the College Park campus around 3  a.m. when he was stabbed in the chest with a folding knife. (AP)

Rockville looks to snuff out outdoor smoking, vaping In an increasingly smoke-free world, the outdoor restaurant table has become a kind of last redoubt for lighting up in public. But today, the Rockville City Council is expected to eliminate that refuge by passing a ban on smoking or vaping in outdoor dining areas and bar patios. The city of 66,000 would become the largest D.C.-area locality to snuff out the practice, and would join a lengthening list of jurisdictions nationwide. As of last month, more than 230 cities and counties and four states mandated smoke-free outdoor dining, according to Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, a lobbying group. (AP)

Trump budget to call for big safety-net cuts

AROLYN KASTER (AP)

Trump’s budget proposal will reportedly target Medicaid, SNAP benefits.

Republicans not to reverse the expansion of Medicaid that former President Barack Obama pursued with the Affordable Care Act. The House has voted to cut the Medicaid funding, but Senate Republicans have signaled they are likely to start from scratch. Tuesday’s budget will be significant, because it will seek changes to entitlements — programs that don’t need annual authorization from Congress. White House budget proposals are a way for an administration to spell out its priorities and goals, setting benchmarks for Congress to work with. The White House also is expected to propose changes to the Supplemental Nutrition

Assistance Program. SNAP is the modern version of food stamps, and it swelled following the financial crisis as the Obama administration made it easier for people to qualify for benefits. An average of 44 million people received SNAP benefits in 2016, while just 28 million people received the benefits in 2008. A key element of the budget plan will be the assumption that huge tax cuts will result in an unprecedented level of economic growth. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told a Senate panel last week that these tax cuts would end up creating trillions of dollars in new revenue, something budget experts from both parties have disputed.

If you’re planning to take a dip in a pool this summer, make sure to plug your nose, close your mouth and rinse off in the shower after you get out, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises. Any inadvertent ingestion of even chlorinated pool water could wind up giving you cryptosporidium. More simply known as “crypto,” the microscopic parasite can make adults and children sick with stomach cramps, nausea and bouts of diarrhea that can last up to three weeks. This isn’t a new parasite, but according to a Thursday CDC study, the number of recorded crypto outbreaks has doubled in the U.S. from 16 in 2014 to 32 in 2016. Crypto can survive 10 days in chlorinated water. (TWP)

Sources: Proposal to cut more than $800B over 10 years from Medicaid POLITICS President Trump’s first major budget proposal on Tuesday will include massive cuts to Medicaid and call for changes to anti-poverty programs that would give states new power to limit a range of benefits, people familiar with the planning said. For Medicaid, the state-federal program that provides health care to low-income Americans, Trump’s budget plan would follow through on a bill passed by House Republicans to slash more than $800 billion over 10 years. The Congressional Budget Office has estimated that this could cut off benefits for about 10 million people over the next decade. The White House also will call for giving states more flexibility to make work requirements for people in anti-poverty programs, potentially leading to a flood of changes in states led by conservative governors. Numerous social welfare programs grew after the financial crisis, leading to complaints from many Republicans that more should be done to shift people out of these programs and back into the workforce. Trump’s decision to include the Medicaid cuts is significant because it shows he is rejecting calls from a number of Senate

Confront ‘extremism’

Trump tells Muslim leaders they must unite against terrorism in the name of religion WASHINGTONPOST.COM POWERPOST

MANDEL NGAN (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA President Trump delivered a forceful address in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, summoning the Muslim world to confront “the crisis of Islamic extremism” as he seeks to create new partnerships to unite against global terrorism. Speaking from Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, Trump implored the leaders of dozens of Muslim nations to take their own destinies in hand and, together with the United States, stop the killing of innocent people in the name of religion. “This is not a battle between different faiths, different sects or different civilizations,” Trump said. “This is a battle between barbaric criminals who seek to obliterate human life and decent people, all in the name of religion — people that want to protect life and want to protect their religion. This is a battle between good and evil.” Trump implicitly rejected the aspirational goals and call for democracy and human rights of former President Barack Obama, who also delivered a major speech to the Islamic world early in his presidency. “We are adopting a principled realism,” Trump said. “We are not here to lecture. We are not here to tell other people how to live, what to do, who to be or how to worship. Instead, we are here to offer partnership, based on shared interests and values.” President Trump was received like visiting royalty in Saudi Arabia on the first leg of his maiden international trip, a five-stop marathon across the Middle East and Europe. Trump called for unity in confronting Iran over its funding of terrorists and promotion of a “craven ideology.” He called on the Muslim world to help isolate

Iran and, just days after Iranians re-elected moderate President Hassan Rouhani, to “pray for the day when the Iranian people have the just and righteous government they so richly deserve.” In the run-up to Trump’s visit, there was considerable speculation about whether he would utter the phrase “radical Islamic terrorism” in his speech, the centerpiece of his Saudi trip. On the campaign trail, Trump loudly criticized Obama for refusing to describe terrorist threats in those terms. But some of Trump’s top aides, including national security adviser H.R. McMaster, have been urging him to soften his language. In his Riyadh address, Trump decided to use a substitute phrase: “Islamist extremism.” But he slightly veered from the prepared excerpts released earlier by the White House, saying “Islamic” instead of “Islamist” on several occasions.

Saudi-U.S. deals Saudi Arabia has signed tentative agreements that the Trump administration said could be worth $110 billion. Here are some details: LOCKHEED MARTIN: The company said the Saudis want $28 billion worth of “air and missile defense, combat ship, tactical aircraft and rotary wing technologies and programs.” GENERAL ELECTRIC: GE tentatively agreed to the sale of $7 billion of technology and for the training of Saudi citizens in cloud-based data skills and expertise in health care. BLACKSTONE: The investment firm announced a plan to create a $40 billion infrastructure fund with half the seed money coming from Saudi public funds. (TWP)

Lamenting the scourge of terrorism across the Middle East, Trump exhorted, “Drive them out! Drive them out of your

places of worship. Drive them out of your communities. Drive them out of your holy land. And drive them out of this Earth.” Trump was addressing a rare gathering of leaders of about 50 Muslim nations at the Arab Islamic American Summit. It was his second day on a marathon foreign trip that will take him next to Israel, and then to the Vatican. The Middle East, he said, had long been home to “Arabs and Christians and Jews living side by side” and could again be a place for “every person, no matter their faith.” Speaking before Trump, Saudi King Salman appeared to gently admonish the United States for its strict visa policies, saying that all in the room rejected “profiling religions and countries on a religious or sectarian basis.” He said that his kingdom is committed to “fighting all forms of terrorism.” KAREN DEYOUNG AND PHILIP RUCKER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

White House national security adviser H.R. McMaster on Sunday did not deny that President Trump discussed his motivation for firing FBI Director James Comey in an Oval Office meeting with Russian officials this month. McMaster would not directly address details of the meeting, but he did not deny reports that Trump revealed classified information and told the Russian officials that Comey’s firing eased “great pressure” on the White House. McMaster said only that Trump was speaking about his desire to find common ground with the Russians. “I don’t remember exactly what the president said,” McMaster said in an interview on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos.” “The gist of the conversation was that the president feels as if he is hamstrung in his ability to work with Russia to find areas of cooperation because this has been obviously so much in the news. And that was the intention of that portion of that conversation.” McMaster refused to reveal further details of the conversation, which he said was privileged and confidential. “The real purpose of the conversation was to confront Russia on areas like Ukraine and Syria, their support for Assad and their support for the Iranians,” he said. Despite repeated condemnations and warnings of additional sanctions, Kim Jong Un’s regime has been pressing ahead at a relentless pace to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile, which would be capable of reaching the mainland United States. Although analysts say the regime has several key technologies to master before it can

deliver a nuclear-tipped missile to a target, they also point out that it gets closer to its goal with every test. The latest launch was of a medium-range ballistic missile, fired from a site at Pukchang, north of Pyongyang, according to U.S. Pacific Command and South Korea’s joint chiefs of staff. It flew for about 310 miles, landing in the sea between the Korean Peninsula and Japan, they said. Analysts said it appeared to be another launch of the missile fired in February — the first after President Trump took office. That was a Pukguksong-2 (or Polaris-2). White House officials traveling with Trump in Saudi Arabia said they were aware of the

In Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said North Korea’s repeated launches “trample on the efforts by the international community” to find a peaceful solution to the nuclear problem, the Kyodo news agency reported. South Korean President Moon Jae-in convened a national security council meeting to discuss the latest launch. The Pukguksong-2 launched in February also flew about 310 miles and appeared to be powered by solid fuel, which allows for immediate firing. North Korea could roll a solidfuel missile out of a tunnel or hangar and launch it before any satellite could track it. ANNA FIFIELD

Syria’s third-largest city cleared of opposition Syria’s government announced Sunday that the country’s thirdlargest city, Homs— once named the capital of the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad — had been cleared of armed opposition for the first time in more than five years. The announcement follows the completion of the evacuation of the last rebel-held neighborhood, al-Waer, which began several weeks ago. (AP)

FINAL CURTAIN

The curtain fell Sunday night for the final show of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The performance was at the Nassau County Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. The circus, a 146-year tradition, wowed audiences for decades with its “Greatest Show on Earth.” Ringling’s parent company announced in January that it would end the show, citing declining attendance and high costs. SOUTH BEND, IND. | Notre Dame graduates stood silently and walked out of Notre Dame Stadium in protest as Vice President Mike Pence began speaking during the university’s 2017 commencement ceremony on Sunday. Dozens of graduates, also joined by family members, participated in the protest. Notre Dame ordinarily invites newly inaugurated presidents to give the address but Pence, the former governor of Indiana, was invited after students and faculty protested the prospect of President Trump giving the address.

Brazilians around the country staged demonstrations Sunday to call for President Michel Temer to step down after the supreme court opened an investigation into allegations he endorsed the payment of hush money to a jailed ex-lawmaker. nation+world In victory speech, Iran’s president amplifies call for further outreach

IRAN As Iran’s chief nuclear envoy, Hassan Rouhani earned the nickname “diplomat sheikh” when negotiators in 2004 reached a deal that saw the Islamic Republic halt all its enrichment of uranium. More than 10 years later, it would be Rouhani as president who would strike a bargain with world powers to again limit Iran’s atomic program, showing once more the cleric’s pragmatism in slowly engaging with the West.

But Iran’s contested nuclear program represents only one part of the identity of the 68-year-old, who decisively won a second term Saturday with 57 percent of the vote. Rouhani was part of the entourage of Islamic Republic founder Ruhollah Khomeini, held sensitive defense posts during the long Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s and allegedly served on a committee that targeted government opponents abroad for assassination. Rouhani, while opening Iran to the world, remains firmly a part of its small, clerically ruled power structure. And yet while not promising widespread changes, he increasingly has criticized

But Iran continues to suffer from high unemployment and a dearth of foreign investment, putting pressure on Rouhani to show he can do more. Rouhani highlighted his desire for further outreach — and with it, the prospect of creating jobs through outside investment. “Today, Iran — prouder than ever — is ready to promote its relations with the world based on mutual respect and national interests,” he said Saturday. Iran “is not ready to accept humiliation and threat. This is the most important message that our nation expects to be heard by all — particularly world powers.” (AP)

hard-liners, showing a deft touch for balancing the various competing powers within Iran. Friday’s election was widely seen as a referendum on Rouhani’s push for greater freedom at home and outreach to the wider world, which culminated in the completion of the 2015 nuclear deal that hard-liners initially opposed. In his victory speech Saturday, Rouhani said his country seeks peace and friendship as it pursues a “path of coexistence and interaction with the world.” The nuclear deal won Iran relief from international sanctions in exchange for limits on its contested nuclear program.

Strasburg takes charge Ace strikes out 11, and the Nats hang on for a tight win that ends a four-game skid NATIONALS 3, BRAVES 2 One of the luxuries the Nationals relish is having two aces. After all, when one falters, chances are the other won’t. The Braves can attest to that after Washington’s 3-2 victory Sunday in Atlanta. Strasburg’s task was to end the Nationals’ four-game losing streak, their longest of the season, a day after Max Scherzer was uncharacteristically out of sorts and couldn’t give the bullpen the breather it needed. Strasburg (5-1) responded with his best outing of 2017 — and it still almost wasn’t enough. He began the day with the lowest strikeout rate of his career through eight starts, just 8.20 K’s per nine innings. But he boosted it with a season-high 11

strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings. Strasburg gave up only five hits, but he showed signs of slowing in the eighth as his pitch count surpassed 100. A one-out walk to Rio Ruiz — the only walk Strasburg yielded — and a couple of hits led to two runs and a lead that was reduced to 3-2. By the time manager Dusty Baker walked out to pull Strasburg, he had thrown 118 pitches — a number he probably he would not have reached if not for the beleaguered state of the bullpen. But Koda Glover got a four-out save with relatively little drama, yielding only a single in the ninth. The Nationals entered the game with concerns about their offense. During the four-game

Fresh faces up next The NL East is so bad that it makes some critics wonder about the validity of the Nationals’ 26-17 record. The other four division teams are below .500, and the Nationals are a modest 9-7 against teams from other divisions. But the Nats, who open a three-game home series against Seattle on Tuesday, won’t face an NL East team again until June 12. Their upcoming schedule includes a nine-game West Coast trip May 29 through June 7 against the Giants, Athletics and Dodgers. (TWP)

losing streak, they had scored only 11 runs. They didn’t do much better Sunday, but they got on the board quickly. Daniel

Murphy hit a leadoff home run in the second inning — his third homer in four games and ninth this season — and Atlanta gifted the Nats two more in the third. First, Trea Turner skied a fly to right field. Nick Markakis got under it but dropped it. Wilmer Difo, who started at third base, followed with a soft chopper to starter Jaime Garcia, who didn’t field it cleanly. Difo reached first and Turner ended up at third. It was up to Bryce Harper to capitalize and he did, smacking a single up the middle to score Turner. Ryan Zimmerman then grounded into a double play, which the Nationals exchanged for their third run. And that was just enough. JORGE CASTILLO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

PREAKNESS STAKES

Buzzkill for Triple Crown dream

The hopes for a Triple Crown winner this year peaked at 6:45 p.m. Saturday when a record crowd of 140,327 saw 10 horses enter the gate for the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore. Moments later, Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming was fading to eighth, and Cloud Computing — which skipped the Derby — was running down Classic Empire for the win. Cloud Computing could face Always Dreaming and Classic Empire in the Belmont on June 10 if all three bounce back well. (AP) O’s (25-17) fall 3-1 to Jays, miss series sweep

Penguins rip Ottawa 7-0 for 3-2 lead The Pittsburgh Penguins are one win away from returning to the Stanley Cup Final. The defending champions pounced quickly on the Ottawa Senators on Sunday, demolishing them 7-0 in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals to take a 3-2 series lead. Sidney Crosby scored for a third consecutive game during a fourgoal first period in which the host Penguins twice chased goalie Craig Anderson, who was celebrating his 36th birthday. He went out briefly when the score reached 3-0, and left for good before the second period. Pittsburgh’s Matt Murray stopped 21 shots to win his second straight start after a six-week injury layoff. NCAA WOMEN’S LACROSSE

All-Stars Isaiah Thomas, left, of Boston and Kawhi Leonard of San Antonio suffered injuries in the conference finals.

Injuries to stars mount in lackluster postseason Thomas (hip) to miss remainder of playoffs; Leonard likely out again NBA PLAYOFFS As was expected, the Golden State Warriors didn’t have too much trouble Saturday night in San Antonio with the Spurs, pulling away to a 120-108 victory for a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven Western Conference finals. The game provided another reminder — with Commissioner Adam Silver on hand — of how lackluster the playoffs have been. Saturday’s game continued a playoff theme: lopsided matchups with big-name players — from Bulls guard Rajon Rondo to Clippers forward Blake Griffin

to Raptors guard Kyle Lowry to Jazz guard George Hill and center Rudy Gobert — out because of injuries. That trend has continued in the conference finals, with Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard (ankle) sitting out the last two games after playing only 24 minutes in Game 1. Coach Gregg Popovich said Leonard is unlikely to play in Game 4 tonight (9, ESPN). The Spurs have been without point guard Tony Parker since May 3. Adding to the injury list was the news Saturday night that Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas will miss the remainder of the postseason after aggravating a hip injury in the Cavaliers’ 130-86 demolition of Boston in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals

Friday. The Celtics, down 2-0, played Cleveland in Game 3 after Express’ deadline Sunday. Thomas didn’t travel with the Celtics, staying in Boston so he can see hip specialists. Before Sunday’s shootaround, Celtics coach Brad Stevens said Thomas might need surgery for the hip impingement, which has been bothering him since March. The injury was so severe that Stevens said he was surprised Thomas was able to play Game 7 of Boston’s semifinal series against Washington. He scored 29 points in 40 minutes to help eliminate the Wizards. Thomas played the first half of Friday’s 44-point loss before the team shut him down to avoid further injury. MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1

A look at the landscape

‘Dirty Dancing’ 8 p.m. Wednesday on ABC

The three-hour musical reimagining of the 1987 movie has Abigail Breslin and newcomer Colt Prattes in the lead roles made famous by Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze. Debra Messing and Sarah Hyland also star.

Now that last week’s 2017 broadcast upfronts have wrapped up, the major networks have officially revealed their new lineups. NBC, Fox, ABC, CBS and The CW announced an array of new series, renewals, cancellations and schedule changes in hopes of drumming up buzz with both viewers and big advertisers. Here are some of the week’s key takeaways. EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Must See TV’ returns: NBC is going all-in on its breakout hit “This Is Us,” adding it to its Thursday night lineup with the network’s reboot of its “Must See TV” brand. Thursdays will kick off with the revival of “Will & Grace” — which was part of the 1990s and 2000s “Must See TV” lineup — in the 8 p.m. slot, followed by the Tina Fey-produced comedy “Great News” at 8:30 p.m. and “This Is Us” at 9 p.m.

An in on the Marvel action: Fox hopes to make an impact this fall with several new shows, including “The Gifted.” The network’s first Marvel series, the show chronicles a suburban couple who discover their children have mutant superpowers. New Ryan Murphy: Ryan Murphy’s horror show “Scream Queens” is officially done, but the uber-producer will return midseason with the debut of a new drama called “9-1-1,” about the lives and careers of first responders.

A contentious cancellation: After six seasons, ABC scrapped “Last Man Standing,” the sitcom starring Tim Allen as a conservative “man’s man” who scoffs at political correctness. Allen tweeted that he was “stunned” by the cancellation. It had decent ratings, and fans noted that it’s a conservative-leaning show in liberal Hollywood that stars Allen, an outspoken Republican. But ABC’s Channing Dungey said it was canceled for “business and scheduling reasons.”

A ‘Big Bang’ spinoff: When “The Big Bang Theory” moves to Thursdays at 8 p.m. after CBS finishes airing Thursday night football, spinoff “Young Sheldon” will air at 8:30. The comedy, narrated by “adult Sheldon” (Jim Parsons), follows the genius growing up in Texas, where he went high school at age 9.

A revived ‘Dynasty’: Add “Dynasty” to the long list of shows back from the dead. The new version of “Dynasty,” the prime-time soap that aired on ABC from 1981 to 1989, is brought to you by executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, who created the CW’s “Gossip Girl” and Fox’s “The O.C.”

More ‘X-Files’: Also held for midseason: More of “The X-Files,” which will return for another 10-episode revival in 2018. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will both reprise their roles.

A revived ‘Roseanne’: As for new additions, ABC officially announced an eight-episode reboot of “Roseanne,” the workingclass sitcom starring Roseanne Barr. It will air in 2018 with its original cast.

More new series: On top of “Young Sheldon,” CBS introduced five other new series. Among them is “Me, Myself & I,” a Bobby Moynihan-starring comedy that looks at a man’s life over three time periods, and “Wisdom of the Crowd,” a drama in which Jeremy Piven plays a tech innovator who creates an app to solve his daughter’s murder.

Friday nights get a surge: “Jane the Virgin” has moved to Friday nights, — often known as the TV “death slot” — but that doesn’t mean it’s doomed. Executives stressed that they strongly believe in the show, whose ratings are boosted by delayed and digital viewing. And they’re happy to pair it with “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” another critically loved series.

A new military drama: NBC also announced “The Brave,” about a Washington-based team of analysts and Special Ops forces who team up for dangerous missions. The drama, starring Anne Heche, is slated for Mondays at 10 p.m.

Lin-Manuel Miranda to voice Gizmoduck in Disney’s reboot of “DuckTales”

Andy Cohen is the host of the classic dating show’s revival, where single people are set up on blind dates and then dish about it later in front of a live audience. “The Bachelor” creator Mike Fleiss serves as a producer.

3 ‘War Machine’ Friday on Netflix

Brad Pitt stars in this satirical war film loosely based on Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who led NATO forces in Afghanistan. It’s one of Netflix’s biggest projects yet as it continues to expand into feature films. (EXPRESS)

‘Anne With an E’: ‘E’ must stand for ‘edgy’ in Netflix’s new take The Netflix version of “Anne of Green Gables” was produced and written by Moira Walley-Beckett from the “Breaking Bad” team. Don’t worry, she didn’t toss in a crystal meth subplot. But she did add a bleak tone to the buoyant 1908 children’s book. “Anne With an E” is the name of the series. The titular Anne (who likes the E because it “looks much more distinguished”) was orphaned as an infant. She’s shuttled between a dreary asylum and private homes where she’s a live-in maid and nanny. At 13, she gets word that an aging brother and sister are going to

adopt her — only to learn they really wanted a boy to do farm chores, not a girl. The setting for all this melodrama is Prince Edward Island, a pastoral Canadian isle with oceanside cliffs and soil that, due to a high iron oxide content, matches Anne’s hair. The book and its sequels, which have sold more than 50 million copies, give us a spirited Anne. With deep reserves of optimism, she’s a kind of Canadian Pollyanna. But the Netflix series vividly reminds us of the misery she’s endured. In flashbacks, Anne is berated and beaten. School is just a dream. Basically, she is a slave. And her troubles have taken a toll. She’s emotionally needy, she

sobs, she says things like, “I’m in the depths of despair.” And she talks way too much. As for the sibs, Matthew is sweet-natured, but Marilla is a killjoy who takes a branch of cherry blossoms Anne cherishes and tosses it into the wood-burning stove. She tells Anne, “For pity’s sake, hold your tongue.” (Though it’s hard to argue with that.) The Netflix series reveals the deeper questions raised by Anne’s story: How do we become the people we are? What’s the source of this orphan’s extraordinary resilience? How will she thaw the frozen heart of Marilla Cuthbert? While there are plenty of moody moments, they’re balanced out by Anne herself, with her innate ability to lift herself and others out of a funk. Why, I bet Anne with an E could even get Walter White to give up his crystal meth business.

“Melania with her WWF lightweight championship belt on.” @JANEYGODLEY, joking about the extremely large belt that first lady Melania Trump wore when she arrived in Saudi Arabia with President Trump on Saturday. Social media users joked that the giant gold accessory around her waist looked like a WWF Championship Wrestling belt. It inspired some other comparisons as well. “I like what Melania has done with the Air Force One seatbelt,” tweeted @JustineBateman. “100% Trump’s tax returns are hidden in Melania’s belt,” Trump parody account @HalfOnionInABag tweeted.

when he accepted a medal from Saudi Arabia’s King Salman. Trump bent over to receive the honor, and his little dip when he came up was awkward enough that some thought it was a curtsy. Greeting foreign dignitaries is a situation fraught with opportunities for misunderstanding. In 2012, Trump criticized then-President Barack Obama on Twitter for having bowed in a meeting with then-King Abdullah. Conservative media, such as Fox News and the Drudge Report, didn’t run the photos of Trump and presented the story as if he did not bow/bend over/curtsy — whatever it was.

that emerged from Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Friday run in Vancouver. CBC News reported that Trudeau was out running when he came across a group of high school students before their prom. According to the outlet, the students noticed Trudeau and asked him for a picture. Trudeau’s photographer, Adam Scotti, was with him. Hence the high-quality photo.

Pippa Middleton, the sister of Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, married hedge fund manager James Matthews in a buzzedabout ceremony on Saturday. Media crews invaded the small village of Englefield in England, home to St. Mark’s Church, and nearby Bucklebury, where a lavish reception was held at the estate of the bride’s parents. Kate looked after the young page boys and bridesmaids, who included her children, Prince George, 3, and Princess Charlotte, 2. Princes William and Harry were in attendance. Fans speculate that Katy Perry’s new song “Swish Swish” is a diss track aimed at her rumored enemy Taylor Swift. When Jimmy Fallon asked Perry on Friday’s “Tonight Show” if the track is about a specific person, Perry said: “It’s a great anthem for people to use whenever someone’s trying to hold you down or bully you.” Meanwhile, Ruby Rose, an ally of Swift’s, took to Twitter to say she will stand up “against things I think are cheap or mean spirited.” (EXPRESS)
