Police in a Cleveland suburb thought they had a drunk on their hands when a man called to report a pig following him home from a train station. A North Ridgeville, Ohio, officer arrived on the scene early Saturday to find the man was very sober and a pig was in fact following him. The officer managed to get the pig in his patrol car and transported it to the station. It was eventually reunited with its owner. (AP)

The man had been disappointed earlier in the day to find that a cat he wanted at PetSmart had been sold to another customer. He returned with pliers and tried to steal the animal, but was tripped and tackled by a group of four employees, customers and volunteers, who held him until police arrived. (EXPRESS)

Police in Florida got particularly inventive with alligator handling on Sunday when they managed to lasso a loose gator found wandering in the street. The Winter Haven Police Department wrote on Facebook that Officer Avery had managed to lasso the 5-foot alligator around its jaws, while two other officers assisted with capturing it. “Relocation to the local pond was a success!” the post noted. Plebes ‘pass’ their final test Naval Academy frosh finish greasy tradition in a little over 2 hours

ALEX WONG (GETTY IMAGES)

MILITARY Several hundred young warriors stormed a 21-foot-high obelisk at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis on Monday, slipping and sliding as they formed a human pyramid around a monument covered in 50 pounds of vegetable shortening. The annual tradition marks the end of their hellacious “plebe year at the academy, the country’s premier training ground for Navy and Marine Corps officers. But that year is only over once the freshmen, known as plebes, manage to replace a “Dixie cup cap perched at the monument’s tip with an upperclassman’s hat. With hundreds of spectators watching in person and hundreds of thousands watching online — including some from as far away as Bangladesh — there were wild cheers when the plebes finally completed the mission after two hours and nine minutes. Dozens of attempts were cut short as the plebes tried and failed to toss the hat onto the

monument’s peak, often hoisting the tallest students through to the upper layers of the human pyramid. But until the final, fateful toss, most of those efforts ended with the plebes slipping down the monument and into the heap of freshmen below. The plebes’ connection to the Herndon Monument can be traced back to the late 1800s, after the Naval Academy returned to Annapolis from its Civil War refuge in Newport, R.I. Freshmen, all white men back then,

weren’t allowed to socialize with women, according to James Cheevers, the retired senior curator of the Naval Academy Museum. Older students were allowed to date, and would take young ladies for a walk down the campus’s “Love Lane. The Herndon Monument — named for Cmdr. William Lewis Herndon, who went down with the SS Central America during a hurricane in 1857 — had been erected along the path in June 1860.

In 1907, the plebes swooped around the monument at the start of summer to celebrate surviving their freshmen year. Cheevers, who researched the Herndon Climb, wrote that the “swoop out became an annual ritual which marked their coveted access to “Love Lane. Then, in 1940, the plebes suddenly decided to climb the monument. The original goal of the climb was to have a member of the class perch on top of the monument, Cheevers wrote. An officer’s white hat appeared at the obelisk’s peak beginning in 1947. Upperclassmen began greasing the monument in 1949, and placed a plebe Dixie cup on top of the monument starting in 1962, Cheevers wrote. The academy began keeping track of how long it took the plebes to finish the climb. The class of 1972 boasts the fastest time at 1 minute 30 seconds — but no grease was used that year. The class of 1998 met an especially sticky fate: Upperclassmen glued and taped the Dixie cup hat to the top. It would take the plebes 4 hours, 5 minutes, 17 seconds to finish, giving them the mark for the slowest time. RACHEL SIEGEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Two-wheeled menace? Electric scooters have proliferated in D.C. — as have resentments toward their riders

expressline

A Baltimore County police officer was killed while investigating a call for a suspicious vehicle Monday afternoon, triggering a massive lockdown and search for at least one suspect, according to police and Gov. Larry Hogan. The incident unfolded just before 2 p.m. in the Perry Hall area, police said. The officer was pronounced dead at about 2:50 p.m. Police had not identified the officer by Express’ deadline. Though the governor initially said she died after being shot, police later said they could not confirm exactly how she died. (TWP)

It seems that ever since spring began, electric scooters have been swarming the streests of D.C.

BALTIMORE BILL O’LEARY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT The gentlemen and women scooting coolly across our city streets and sidewalks at 15 miles per hour, the wind gently tousling their hair, are indifferent to your angry glares. They’re unbothered by your #scootersbehavingbadly tweets, and the cyclists hollering at them in the bike lanes, and the pedestrians who leap in front of them — not the wisest move, really — to shout, “You’re going to hurt somebody!” Nothing fazes the scooter bros. “They’re hating,” Cameron Willis, 32, said as he glided to a stop on 15th Street NW, “because they don’t have a scooter.” The arrival of zippy electric scooters for rent in Washington has been met with a giddy embrace from riders like Willis, and annoyance from plenty of others. “What is it, 2000 all over again with the Razor scooter trend?” wondered Meghin Moore, a 27-year-old Fredericksburgbased freelance writer who was stunned on a recent visit to the capital by the sheer number of fully grown people on scooters. “I was like, great, scooter gangs are taking over D.C.” Deposited onto Washington streets a few months ago by three companies — LimeBike, Bird and Skip — the scooters can pitch riders up hills with no effort at all. You can find them with an app and, because they are “dockless,” leave them just about anywhere when you’re done. That’s a big part of the grudge against scooters, which on any given day you’ll find leaned against parking meters, tossed in the running path along Rock Creek Park, just sitting out there

BALTIMORE COUNTY

Suspect sought after officer killed on duty

on a residential corner like … “Like litter!” joked a man as he and a co-worker hopped onto a pair of Bird scooters a few blocks from the White House. As with the stink bug invasion, few of us can pinpoint exactly when electric scooters came buzzing into D.C., only that in the bright light of spring, they’re suddenly everywhere. Now, scooter bros can be found hogging the sidewalk on K Street in the middle of the day, or rolling up the 15th Street cycle track with their briefcases at rush hour. “We’ve reached meta D.C. transportation,” said Valeria Ojeda-Avitia, 23, a market research analyst who was dumbfounded by one such grown man careening past her in a suit. “It was just too funny,” she said. “He even had papers like he was going to a meeting. Like, he was taking the scooter to a meeting.” Rashid Bushra doesn’t get the backlash.

“It really is the novelty of it. There’s no requirement to sweat now. All you have to do is jump on and jump off.” CAEN CONTEE, a LimeBike spokesman, on the accelerating popularity of motorized scooters in D.C. LimeBike said Monday that it was pulling some of its bicycles from D.C. streets to add more scooters.

“The benefits outweigh the bad,” the 24-year-old insisted as he unlocked a bright-yellow Skip scooter on a congested sidewalk in Logan Circle. “Scooters have their own little market. They appeal to a certain kind of person, younger people …” They appeal, he added, “to yuppies.” Whatever that means these days. It does seem clear, though,

Woman charged in fatal stabbing of her uncle Monday in Fairfax County

that scooters are being taken up by a young, urbane and maybe just slightly entitled demographic. Is there a town more densely packed with that type than D.C.? “You do feel a little childish,” confirmed Willis, pausing to contemplate what it meant to be a 32-year-old man wheeling around a great metropolitan center on this glorified skateboard. “It sounds bad,” he concluded. “But it’s fine.” When pressed about the city’s scooting pains, Colin Browne, a spokesman for the Washington area Bicyclist Association, cheerfully mused that the more ways to get around we have, the better. He thinks we’re just in an uneasy adjustment period that “involves people having to figure out how to behave around each other.” LAVANYA RAMANATHAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Former top cop makes initial court appearance Baltimore’s former police commissioner made his initial court appearance on federal tax charges. Prosecutors allege that De Sousa willfully failed to file tax returns for three years. If convicted, De Sousa faces up to a year in prison and a $25,000 fine on each of the three charges. TRANSPORTATION A group of corporate leaders is pushing for a robust, interconnected network of toll lanes from Baltimore to Richmond, saying the region should embrace tolling to improve the reliability of the region’s roadways and reduce congestion while generating a funding stream to pay for transportation infrastructure. The Greater Washington Partnership has identified principles it said can guide elected and government officials to successfully develop the toll road network. “We have done tolling separately in Virginia and Maryland, but we really need to do this as a region,” said Joe McAndrew, the group’s director of transportation policy. “We need to be thinking about this to incorporate and benefit the broader transportation system.” The group is pushing for regional consensus on tolling at an opportune time, seeking to boost support for a Maryland proposal to add toll lanes to parts of the Capital Beltway and Interstate 270 and capitalize on the growth of tolling across the Potomac River in Northern Virginia, where about 55 miles of express lanes have opened on Interstates 495, 95 and 66 within the past five years.

LUZ LAZO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Area business leaders are pushing for regional network of pay lanes

The Greater Washington Partnership says a regional toll network would reduce congestion while creating a source of infrastructure funding.

Maryland’s plan, the group said, offers an opportunity to reduce congestion, improve reliability and boost mobility for commuters. And it would provide connectivity with the Virginia toll network by way of the American Legion and Woodrow Wilson bridges. Virginia is on pace to create a network of 90 miles of HOT lanes by 2022, with the addition of an eight-mile stretch of express lanes on I-395 and 22 miles of toll lanes on I-66 outside the Beltway. As the network grows in Virginia and Maryland, it should become an integrated system that follows the same principles, said John Porcari, a former deputy U.S. transportation secretary and Maryland transportation chief. “Is the tolling revenue helping the entire transportation system

including public transit? Is it accessible and usable for consumers of all income levels?” said Porcari, who serves on the partnership’s mobility steering committee. A position paper by the partnership lays out this formula: Tolling should be coordinated regionally to deliver the benefits of greater mobility and reliability, revenue from tolls should be used to improve public transportation, and the investments should benefit not only the tolled facility but the greater transportation system. The region should ensure the toll facilities benefit people of all income levels, suggesting programs such as free tolling accounts to ensure people of lower incomes can access them. According to the NWS, the previous record was five days. Over the record-setting wet spell that ended Sunday, the least rain that fell on any day at Reagan National airport was 0.41 inches, on May 15. The most was 1.49 inches, which fell May 14. nation+world Divided Supreme Court says employees can be forced to use arbitration COURTS A divided Supreme Court ruled Monday that businesses can prohibit their workers from banding together in disputes over pay and conditions in the workplace, a decision that affects an estimated 25 million non-unionized employees. With the court’s five conservative members in the majority, the justices held that individual employees can be forced to use arbitration, not the courts, to air complaints about wages and overtime. Four dissenting liberal justices said the decision will hit

low-wage, vulnerable workers especially hard. While the complaints in Monday’s decision involved pay issues, the outcome also might extend to workplace discrimination and other disputes if employee contracts specify that they must be dealt with in oneon-one arbitration. Workers who want to take action against sexual harassment, pay discrimination, pregnancy discrimination and racial discrimination “may now be forced behind closed doors into an individual, costly — and often secret — arbitration process,” said Fatima Goss Graves, president and CEO of the National Women’s Law Center. Lawyers representing management said

Ruling deals blow to workers

A split Supreme Court upheld the use of employment contracts that prohibit class action lawsuits.

the decision protects businesses from endless, costly litigation. The outcome does not affect people represented by labor

unions, but an estimated 25 million employees work under contracts that prohibit collective action by employees. The ruling reflected a yearslong pattern at the Supreme Court of limiting class actions and backing employer-favored arbitration over lawsuits in the courts. The Trump administration backed the businesses, reversing the position the Obama administration took in favor of employees. The court’s task was to reconcile federal laws that seemed to point in different directions. New Deal labor laws explicitly give workers the right to band together, but the older Federal Arbitration Act encourages the use of arbitration instead of the courts. MARK SHERMAN (AP)

PAHOA, HAWAII | Steam rises as lava enters the Pacific Ocean after flowing to the water from a Kilauea volcano fissure Monday on Hawaii’s Big Island. When the molten rock pours into the ocean, it creates a toxic steam cloud laced with tiny glass shards, yet another hazard from the eruption that began May 3. The rate of sulfur dioxide gas shooting from ground fissures tripled Sunday, leading officials to reiterate warnings about air quality.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., announces 2018 re-election bid; agenda prioritizes working families

MEDIA Netflix announced a production deal Monday with Barack and Michelle Obama that calls for the former first couple to create a wide range of content for the streaming service. The deal, talks for which had first been reported in March, will encompass a wider variety of formats than many analysts expected. Among the content the Obamas will produce under the multiyear deal are films and series, with scripted series, docu-series, documentaries and feature films all possibilities, Netflix said. Unscripted series — Hollywood’s euphemism for reality TV — are on the table, too. It’s unclear if the Obamas will appear in any of the productions. “[W]e hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world,” Barack Obama said in a statement released by Netflix. Netflix released few details on the specific series or films the couple would work on. But like Barack Obama, Netflix suggested they would be in the social-good realm. The contract was not described as exclusive, opening up the possibility that the Obamas could make shows or movies for other distributors. STEVEN ZEITCHIK (TWP)

His current term now expires in 2020. (AP)

Syria’s military on Monday captured an enclave in southern Damascus from ISIS militants following a ruinous monthlong battle, bringing the entire capital and its far-flung suburbs under full government control for the first time since the civil war began in 2011. Fungi make up about 2 percent of the world’s total biomass.

Earth’s heavyweights are plants, not people Global census shows humans barely register in measure of biomass SCIENCE When you weigh all life on Earth, billions of humans don’t amount to much compared to trees, earthworms or even viruses. But we really know how to throw around what little weight we have, according to a firstof-its-kind global census of the footprint of life on the planet. Humans add up to only about one ten-thousandth of the life on Earth, measured by the dry weight of the carbon that makes up the structure of all living things, also known as biomass. The planet’s real heavyweights are plants. They outweigh people

by about 7,500 to 1, and make up more than 80 percent of the world’s biomass, a study in Monday’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences said. Bacteria are nearly 13 percent of the world’s biomass. Fungi — yeast, mold and mushrooms — make up about 2 percent. These estimates aren’t very precise — the real numbers could be more or less — but they give a sense of proportion, said study lead author Ron Milo, a biologist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. “The fact that the biomass of fungi exceeds that of all animals sort of puts us in our place,” said Harvard evolutionary biology professor James Hanken, who wasn’t part of the study. Still, humans have an outsize

influence on their more massive fellow creatures. Since civilization started, humans helped cut the total weight of plants by half and wild mammals by 85 percent, the study said. Now domesticated cattle and pigs outweigh all wild mammals by 14 to 1, while the world’s chickens are triple the weight of all the wild birds. The researchers looked at biomass for different types of life, combined them, and factored in climate, geography and other environmental issues to come up with a the scale of life on the planet. Measuring only dry carbon makes it easier for scientists to compare species. About onesixth the weight of a human is dry carbon. Humans are about twothirds water. SETH BORENSTEIN (AP)

Maduro wins amid charges of irregularities CARACAS, VENEZUELA Venezuela’s pro-government electoral council declared President Nicolas Maduro the winner of Sunday’s election after a vote condemned internationally as the fortification of a dictatorship. This oil-producing nation is facing a near-total societal collapse because of mismanagement, corruption and a crumbling socialist system. Traditional opposition parties were barred from fielding candidates and had called for a broad boycott of Sunday’s vote. The government announced a 46 percent turnout — the lowest for a presidential election here since the 1940s. On Sunday, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan said Washington would not recognize the results. However, a number of global autocrats, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russian President Vladimir Putin, have backed Maduro. Many Venezuelans said they feared boycotting the election might mean losing government jobs or benefits — particularly subsidized government food baskets. Government officials set up registration booths for benefits next to — sometimes inside — polling stations. More than 1 million Venezuelans — many of them starving and desperate for medical aid — have fled the country since 2015. ANTHONY FAIOLA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

S. Koreans fume over Bolton Many blame Trump’s national security chief for roiling N. Korea talks WASHINGTONPOST.COM RETROPOLIS

Breaking news: Adolf Hitler really is dead NICHOLAS KAMM (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS President Trump is blaming Kim Jong Un for changing the scope of their summit talks planned for next month and will likely air his frustrations when he meets with South Korean President Moon Jae-in in Washington today. But in South Korea, many say the blame for the sudden problems in the diplomatic process lies squarely at the feet of someone else: John Bolton. “Bolton’s preposterous ‘Libya solution’ is a red light in North Korea’s summit talks with the U.S. and South Korea,” Woo Sang-ho, a lawmaker in Moon’s ruling Democratic Party, wrote in a Facebook post. Many in the Moon administration served under pro-engagement president Roh Moo-hyun, at a time when Bolton was a strong proponent inside the George W. Bush administration of regime change in North Korea. “I think a lot of people who were involved with the Roh administration are concerned about Bolton because he was such a neoconservative at the time, and it seems that he hasn’t changed,” said Lee Geun, a professor of political science at Seoul National University. “People are worried that he’s going to interfere and botch the process.” A spokesman for Bolton, now Trump’s national security adviser,

South Korea blames national security adviser John Bolton for North Korea balking on its summit with the U.S.

could not be reached for comment. Moon’s visit to Washington was scheduled in the wake of his own feel-good summit with Kim at the end of April and was intended to help Trump prepare for his summit with the North Korean leader, scheduled for June 12 in Singapore. Trump had repeatedly said the talks were shaping up well until last week, when North Korea made clear it had no interest in “unilateral nuclear abandonment” and would “reconsider” proceeding with the summit if that were the condition. This followed Bolton’s appearance on the Sunday shows May 13 to tout the “ Libya model” whereby Muammar Gaddafi gave up his nuclear weapons

program in 2003 for sanctions relief. The North Korean regime, however, remembers what happened afterward: Gaddafi was overthrown and brutally killed by his opponents. Lee Jong-Seok, who served as South Korea’s unification minister in the later years of the Roh administration, said the two sides seized on different lessons from Libya. Bolton looked at it as a successful case of denuclearizing a rogue regime, while North Korea focused on the dictator’s grisly end. “Bolton created a mess by bringing up the ‘Libya model,’ which is deeply dreaded by Pyongyang,” Lee said. Others play down concerns

about Bolton, noting that he is in frequent contact with his South Korean counterpart. “I do not worry about Bolton,” said Moon Chung-in, a usually outspoken adviser to the South Korean president. “He will follow President Trump’s lead.” The biggest problem, experts in Seoul say, comes from Trump’s fundamental misunderstanding of North Korea’s interests. “Kim Jong Un coming out to talks is not an act of one-way surrender but a movement to adjust mutual interests,” Lee said. “It’s not that North Korea rejects complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization, but rather they need a tangible promise from Washington in return.” ANNA FIFIELD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

After completing what they say is the first examination of Adolf Hitler’s remains since World War II, a team of researchers has announced that the Nazi leader most definitely died in Berlin and, therefore, cannot possibly still be alive on the moon. The study was no easy feat. Over the past 73 years, Hitler’s presumed corpse has been set on fire, secretly buried, dug up by the Soviets, hidden by the KGB and finally ordered destroyed. Hitler’s person, meanwhile, has appeared in the fantasies of all manner of conspiracy theorists who insist his body is a fake. So last year, a team of French researchers persuaded the Russian government to let them inspect the last two bits of Hitler known to exist: a bullet-shot chunk of skull and a set of frankly disgusting teeth. They compared these fragments to war-era autopsy records and concluded that, yep, those are definitely Hitler’s teeth. “There is no possible doubt. Our study proves that Hitler died in 1945,” co-author Philippe Charlier told Agence FrancePresse after the paper was published Friday in the European Journal of Internal Medicine. “He did not flee to Argentina in a submarine,” Charlier continued. “He is not in a hidden base in Antarctica or on the dark side of the moon.” AVI SELK

Outfielder Juan Soto has the kind of astronomical minor league batting stats that forecast success.

Desperate in Game 4

THOMAS BOSWELL | THE WASHINGTON POST

Teenage dream: At 19, Soto seems like a future star When Juan Soto, 19, heard Saturday that he had been called up to the majors by the Nationals, he got goose bumps. “I was in shock. All my [hairs] went up,” Soto said, running his hand up his forearm. I had the same reaction. Few events give fans goose bumps like the arrival of a teenager in the majors. With its vast history, enormous stat base and a long, tough learning curve, baseball has an invisible wall against teens. When one appears, he must leap over warnings about how each level of the game must be mastered. At 23, if you’re a real prospect, you’re probably in the majors. At 22, maybe. At 21, that’s still hot stuff. At 20, pay big attention, But 19? Come on, even if injuries have sped a player’s rise, as with Soto amid the Nats’ injury tsunami, how

good do you think this kid is? Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle, Ken Griffey Jr. — stop me if you’ve heard of these guys — Al Kaline and Mel Ott all emerged as teens. Such players seldom arrive full-blown. But stardom comes in a year or two. Other than that, there’s no reason to get excited about Soto. Soto had a cumulative batting average of .362 over three years rocketing through the minors. This year, in three leagues and 39 games, he hit .362 with 14 homers — one of them 460 feet long — and 52 RBIs. For a full year, that would equal more than 50 homers and more than 200 RBIs. He’s not that good. And his entire pro experience was still only 454 at-bats entering Monday’s action because he was hurt much of last year. But his stats are scary. And in baseball, numbers, even minor league numbers if they are astronomical, usually matter.

Capitals-Lightning Game 6 ended after Express’ deadline

Soto’s minor league slash line (.362 batting average/.434 on-base percentage/.609 slugging percentage), plus 22 homers and 102 RBIs, is not that different from Ted Williams’ and Willie Mays’. They erupted in the majors at 20. Good-to-very-good minor league hitting numbers may mean something or nothing. But almost-unbelievable stats, such as Soto’s .757 slugging percentage in the minors this spring, usually predict a goodto-great big league career. He struck out on four pitches as a pinch hitter in his MLB debut Sunday in a loss to the Dodgers. He was set to make his first big-league start Monday night against San Diego. It was not his first at-bat, however, but his next hundred or more before Adam Eaton returns — perhaps in late June — that may give a sense of what Soto offers. The implications are large. The Nats must possess an elite, left-handed, middle-of-theorder bat to field a fine total lineup. If Soto can fill that role, Washington would have some protection against Bryce Harper leaving in free agency. Last year, Soto, who is from the Dominican Republic, conducted interviews in Spanish. On Sunday, he answered questions in fluent English.

Precocious teens Nationals prospect Juan Soto is just the ninth teenager in the past 16 years to get called up to the big leagues. A look at a few of the others teases his potential. (TWP) Bryce Harper hit 22 homers in 139 games as a 19-year-old in 2012, winning NL Rookie of the Year with the Nationals and receiving the first of five All-Star selections. He won an MVP at 22. Mike Trout debuted for the Angels in 2011 at 19. He was AL Rookie of the Year in 2012 and has six straight All-Star selections with two MVP awards. Jose Reyes debuted for the Mets at 19 in 2003. A four-time All-Star, he won the NL batting title in 2011 and leads active players in stolen bases.

Golden State dealt Houston its largest playoff loss in franchise history Sunday with a 41-point drubbing. Here’s a look at what the Rockets, down 2-1, have to overcome tonight (9, TNT). (EXPRESS)

3 ‘Soft’ all-around play

Rockets coach Mike D’Antoni called his team “soft” Sunday after Houston coughed up 19 turnovers, allowed 56 points in the paint and was outrebounded 52-45.

2 Silent starters

Trevor Ariza and PJ Tucker combined to shoot 15-of-18 for 41 points in Houston’s Game 2 win. In two losses, they have just 21 total points on 7-of-22 shooting.

1 Confident Curry

After shooting 2-for-13 on 3-pointers in the first two games, Stephen Curry hit 5-of-12 on Sunday and drilled all seven field goal attempts in an 18-point third quarter.

Soto has now ripped through five leagues, hitting .356, .429, .366, .371 and .323. The Nats just hope his numbers translate. Maybe it’s a clue that his English already has. Follow Thomas Boswell on Twitter @ThomasBoswellWP

Maryland’s Kevin Huerter, a 6-foot-7 guard, is being nearly universally hailed as a winner for the way he performed in one day of scrimmages. Four executives told The Post that they didn’t expect Huerter — who hasn’t hired an agent — to return to college for a third season. All four said he’ll likely be a first-rounder.

Villanova guard Donte DiVincenzo was the runaway winner among prospects who worked out in Chicago, following up on his 31-point breakout performance in the NCAA title game last month and solidifying his status as a first-round pick. Multiple sources expect the rising junior to hire an agent and leave Jay Wright’s squad.

Duke guard Grayson Allen was the biggest winner of all the players who opted not to scrimmage. Allen’s strength and agility scores ranked among the best of the group. Baggage such as multiple tripping incidents could cause a drop, but he projects as late first-rounder who can help a good team right away as a reserve.

Oklahoma’s season tailed off in the second half with one-and-done talent Trae Young, but that didn’t stop him from saying he thinks he’s “the best overall player in this draft.” His ceiling is probably the No. 6 overall pick, which belongs to Orlando, but the Bulls, Cavs and Knicks (Nos. 7-9) could all use a scoring point guard.

Luka Doncic, the 19-year-old Slovenian wunderkind, wasn’t in Chicago but saw his stock rise anyway. The 6-foot7 forward lead Real Madrid to the EuroLeague title Sunday and was the youngest Final Four MVP in league history. With former Slovenia coach Igor Kokoskov in Phoenix, Doncic fit the Suns well with the first overall pick.

sick, starts avoiding wheat. Or someone who switches to coconut oil based on one study, when the olive oil they formerly used is actually healthier. It’s common to experiment with fad diets because of something we hear at the gym or read in a magazine. But that’s not science. “Probably the biggest problem is that everyone feels that they can be an expert on nutrition,” Mozaffarian says. So think critically about where your nutrition information comes from before you make dietary changes. Misguided advice from nonexperts doesn’t mean that real nutritional science is inaccurate. Following faulty advice can cause harm, especially when you remove foods from your diet but don’t properly replace the nutrients they once provided. Sometimes a one-off “new” study you hear about might not mesh with the U.S. Agriculture Department’s tried-and-true Dietary Guidelines, which leads to more confusion. Studies are published weekly, but policy guidelines change every five years. What should you rely upon? Mozaffarian says he doesn’t think the public should change its dietary behaviors based on single studies, nor should policies be based on single studies. Instead, scientists have to help move the field forward by reviewing the

NUTRITION It seems as though nutrition news is ever-changing. Official guidelines say one thing about what to eat, but diet books and bloggers may offer different advice — often to remove healthy foods from your diet for no credible reason. If you are confused about the correct nutrition information to follow, you’re not alone. It may seem as if nutrition science is all over the place, but that perception is not reality, according to Dariush Mozaffarian, cardiologist and dean of the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University in Boston. The progress in this area is consistent with the pace in many other scientific fields, but because nutrition is so personal, Mozaffarian says, people internalize the messages in a way they wouldn’t in any other field. “If you learn in physics that there was new research about a black hole, you may say, ‘Oh, that’s interesting,’ but you don’t change your habits because the science has changed,” Mozaffarian says. That’s different in nutrition, where we hear a news report about a food we love, and we alter our meal choices because of the new information, even when the results of the study don’t justify those changes. Consider the person who, upon hearing gluten can make some people

home for federal nutrition policy, Mozaffarian says. In addition to the USDA Dietary Guidelines, there’s Food and Drug Administration food labeling; Health & Human Services’ diseasespecific recommendations; Dietary Reference Intakes from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine; and more. “I think it’s a lost opportunity that these relatively separate agencies don’t always overlap,” Mozaffarian says. “I think we need to have a Cabinet-level position that brings together all of this disparate nutrition policy so it’s more coordinated.” That would reduce consumer confusion, he said. Store shelves are brimming with “healthy” versions of chips. Whether it’s kale, snap peas, apples or banana, almost everything now comes crisped, seasoned and packaged. But are these crispy versions of fruits and vegetables any better for you than fried potatoes or regular chips? The key is to look at the ingredients. Many of the chips are made with whole vegetables and fruit, oil, salt and seasoning. But some products are just regular chips in a kale coating. It’s also important to watch the serving size. Buying a bag of apple chips, for example, could easily lead to downing several apples’ worth in a sitting. The best hack is to make these snacks at home, where you can make only relatively small batches at once. ELLIE KRIEGER (TWP)

BEN CLAASSEN III (FOR EXPRESS)

Q. My brother says I’m not giving his new girlfriend a chance because his exgirlfriend is my close friend. It is true that his new girlfriend can’t hold a candle to his ex. But now he is being difficult, accusing me of making family gatherings awkward and snubbing her. She and I don’t have much in common, and I choose not to say much to her because she doesn’t say much to me. He was used to me, him and his ex hanging out a lot, but that will never happen with this girlfriend. How do I get him to see that? SHE DOESN’T MEASURE UP

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

Do I confront a date who snoops? Q. I’ve been dating someone for six weeks who seems nice, but I think she’s been going through my stuff. A couple of times now I have found items moved when she was the only one around. I want to trust her and not make things weird by accusing her, but I also feel this isn’t something I want to mess around with. NOT SURE HOW TO PROCEED Your gut is important here. Of course you want to trust her, but not everyone deserves that trust. And you don’t want to make things weird, but it’s already weird — likely by her doing. Granted, you can’t be certain she’s gone through your stuff, but it’s weighing on you. Let’s say she was snooping. It doesn’t have to mean she’s a con artist, but it does mean she’s willing to

violate your trust, privacy and personal space — and it would be hard to get a relationship off the ground with that type of corrosion in the foundation. You could devise some complicated test/trap or bide your time to see if anything else happens, but will you really end up getting over it? Methinks that “seems nice isn’t a raving enough endorsement to make it worth it to find out.

I’m not sure that’s the most important question here. Yes, your brother may have unduly high expectations, given your BFF status with his ex. But might he also just be feeling — I dunno — like you’re not being that great to his girlfriend? So much of your letter drips with offense-as-defense — or is it defense-as-offense? — that I can’t help but think that you’ve denied her anything close to an open mind or a warm welcome. You’re asking me how to get him to accept that she’s not like his ex — but what if it’s you who needs to accept that, and start fresh with her? Mark Duplass

Brothers Mark and Jay Duplass have made the transition from indie film darlings to TV tycoons TELEVISION Mark and Jay Duplass claim they made the ugliest movie to have ever played Sundance. The brothers shot the dimly lit “This Is John,” about a man struggling to record a coherent answering machine message, for just $3 — the cost of a blank tape. Back in 2003, dwindling funds prompted them to do things like return muddy extension cords to the hardware store. “I think Home Depot can afford to subsidize a little bit of art,” Mark says. “I think they’re fine.” Fifteen years later, the Duplasses are the ones doling out money. After becoming stars of the festival circuit with so-called mumblecore films, they’re now two of TV’s biggest impresarios through distribution deals with HBO and Netflix, for whom they recently produced the buzzy documentary series “Wild Wild Country.” All the while, they’ve clung to their DIY eclecticism, piling acting, writing and directing projects on top of each other to form careers unlike anyone else’s. They receive tons of emails from aspiring indie filmmakers who simply must know how “two two

extremely average guys,” as Mark puts it, managed to pull it off. So they wrote a book, published earlier this month: “Like Brothers,” a look at how Mark, 41, and Jay, 45, built a lifelong partnership. “Without killing each other,” Mark adds. Katie Aselton, Mark’s wife of 11 years who has acted in a number of their projects, calls Mark the gas and Jay the brakes: “Mark wants to do it all really fast, and Jay wants to slow things down and think about it a little bit.” The two were close while growing up in Metairie, La., a suburb of New Orleans. The Duplasses slept in the same twin bed by choice. In their free time, Jay borrowed his parents’ camera and directed Mark in short films. But their harmony wasn’t enough to make their aptly named HBO series “Togetherness” an entirely enjoyable experience while it aired from 2015 to 2016. The brothers spent about 13 hours a day together, writing, producing and directing every episode of the show’s two-season run. Mark also acted in all of the episodes. Furthermore, the show’s first season overlapped with the last

Now that we’re officially out of Hollywood awards season, did you forget about the Billboard Music Awards? Well, here’s everything you need to know about Sunday’s ceremony, which saw Ed Sheeran win the prize for top artist. EMILY YAHR (TWP) The Santa Fe tributes BBMAs host Kelly Clarkson said the show’s producers wanted her to start with a moment of silence following Friday’s shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas, but she decided to speak up: “Why don’t we not do a moment of silence? Why don’t we do a moment of action? Why don’t we do a moment of change?”

of “The League,” an FX series Mark starred in with Aselton, while Jay continued to appear in Amazon’s “Transparent.” Although the end of “Togetherness” gave them room to breathe, both brothers have plenty on their plate. Jay co-wrote and starred in Lynn Shelton’s “Outside In” and produced Miguel Arteta’s dramedy “Duck Butter” with Mark, who recently appeared in Jason Reitman’s “Tully.” The brothers also produce the adult animated comedy “Animals” and the anthology

“Room 104”

series “Room 104” for HBO. It’s fitting that the Duplasses ended up at Netflix, whose vision seems to align with their spaghetti-at-the-wall approach. They’re well-acquainted with the possibility that no one will see their passion projects in theaters and don’t mind throwing content into the streaming site’s void. “We have no entitlement at all — like, we came from nowhere,” re, Jay says. “If they took it all away way from us right now, we’d walk alk away, ‘Seriously, we had a great eat run.’ ” SONIA RAO (THE WASHINGTON POST) OST)

Allee Willis, a co-writer on the Earth, Wind & Fire song “September,” used her show Friday in Detroit to blast Taylor Swift’s recent cover of the track, calling it “as lethargic as a drunk turtle dozing under a sunflower after ingesting a bottle of Valium.” Willis issued a supportive statement after Swift released the cover last month but said Friday that she only did so at her publicist’s request. “I didn’t really think she did a horrible job,” Willis said Friday. “I thought it had all the build of a one-story motel, but, I mean, the girl didn’t kill anybody. She didn’t run over your foot.” (EXPRESS)
