A large family of ducks has made its home at a Nissan dealership in Orlando, Fla., the Miami Herald reported Monday. Sutherlin Nissan Orlando’s managing partner, Ulrich Stanley Marine, said the mother duck laid her 15 eggs outside the dealership’s window several months ago. When they hatched, employees began feeding the ducklings, and they haven’t left. “They put people in a good mood,” Marine said. (EXPRESS)

A couple in Granada, Spain, were troubled by a loud buzzing in their home, CNN reported Monday. Having spotted bees around their property, they called a beekeeper and hive relocation expert, who found the source of the problem: a hive of 80,000 bees behind a bedroom wall. “From about three months ago there was an unbearable noise and they didn’t know what to do,” bee expert Sergio Guerrero said. “Just imagine!” (EXPRESS)

Bereaved shoppers in Dearborn, Mich., held a candlelit vigil outside a Kroger grocery store that permanently closed Saturday, UPI reported. Videos show about 100 people, many in funeral attire, lighting candles and waving signs with messages like, “We will miss you.” Another, newer Kroger across the street will remain open, and employees affected by the closure will be offered jobs at other nearby stores, Kroger officials said. The new Howard Theatre Walk of Fame, which starts at the corner of Seventh and S streets, commemorates 15 black cultural icons in bronze medallions.

Walk of Fame honors black Howard Theatre icons THE DISTRICT The next time you’re strolling near the Howard Theatre, watch where you’re going — you might be stepping on a piece of D.C. history. The new Howard Theatre Walk of Fame embellishes the sidewalk between the Shaw-Howard Metro Station and the historic venue on T Street NW with bronze medallions commemorating 15 black cultural icons. The Walk of Fame is a joint

project of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development and the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The promenade is like D.C.’s version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with handsculpted portraits of prominent African American vanguards — including Marvin Gaye, Chuck Brown and Ella Fitzgerald — engraved onto each medallion. Robinson III and sculpture artist Joanna Blake. Hackett said the team looked to the Howard Theater’s architecture for inspiration for the medallions. They chose bronze for its well-documented history in West African art. Signage explaining more about the honorees adds another layer of context to the Walk of Fame, which starts at the corner of Seventh and S streets. Coleman, the project’s lead sculptor, says he may not comprehend the gravity of the project for “another 10 years.” “We’re mostly excited to see how the Walk of Fame can inspire more historical dialogue through art, especially at a time when the importance of history is being marginalized,” he says. Pope picked cleric Wilton Gregory, 71, after the retirement of Cardinal Wuerl

longtime leader of the Catholic philanthropy group FADICA. “He assumes his leadership when his flock has been deeply wounded. … Rebuilding trust will be Archbishop Gregory’s greatest challenge.” Within the past year, the Archdiocese of Washington has faced embarrassment over the actions of its two most recent archbishops. First came the revelation that Theodore McCarrick, Washington’s archbishop from 2001 to 2006, had allegedly sexually harassed both minors and adults. Within months, McCarrick became the first U.S. cardinal ever removed from the priesthood for sexual abuse. Then came the Pennsylvania grand jury report, and in it, allegations that Cardinal Donald Wuerl mishandled abuse cases when he was bishop of Pittsburgh. Wuerl retired from his role as archbishop of Washington in October. Into this rattled and heartsick archdiocese steps Gregory, a 71-year-old cleric tapped for the job by Pope Francis last month. Gregory has served as archbishop of Atlanta since 2004 and is expected to be made a cardinal soon after he takes over the Washington archdiocese. Gregory has taken on abuse scandals before — in the first diocese he led as bishop, in Belleville, Ill., in the 1990s, and again in the early 2000s, when

THE DISTRICT Wilton Gregory, a longtime Catholic cleric who has been a leader in the church’s efforts to address its sexual abuse crisis for more than two decades, was installed on Tuesday as archbishop of Washington. He takes the helm of one of the most prominent Catholic dioceses at a time when it is embroiled in the latest wave of scandal. He was loudly cheered by eight red-robed cardinals, 50 bishops and hundreds of Catholic faithful as he walked the aisles of the grand Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, holding out the paper scroll proclaiming him the Washington archbishop. Gregory read the official language aloud with which he accepted the position: “With faith in our Lord Jesus Christ and with the love of God in my heart, I do accept the pastoral care of the people of God in the Archdiocese of Washington. I resolve to serve faithfully the spiritual needs of this local church.” When the Vatican’s ambassador to Washington put the gold bishop’s scepter into Gregory’s hands, the crowd burst into another round of applause. “He is the right person at the right time. He’s a man of great integrity and character,” said Frank Butler, a former staffer for the U.S. bishops conference and

he was the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops at the time that Boston Globe investigative reporters exposed the abuse crisis. As president of the bishops conference, Gregory presided over the landmark 2004 Dallas conference, where he helped coax wary bishops to enact a zero-tolerance policy for removing accused abusers from

ministry. Attendees on Tuesday included many in Washington’s black Catholic community who were eager to celebrate the first black archbishop in the nation’s capitol, as well many guests from Gregory’s prior dioceses — Atlanta, Belleville and Chicago. The Rev. Urey Mark, a Catholic chaplain for colleges in Georgia, came to watch. Before the Mass, he praised Gregory, recalling a time that he told Gregory that some college students were hungry. The archbishop quickly arranged for a donor to provide $4,000 for snacks at the student center Mark runs. “You are getting a good shepherd who is coming at the right time and at the right moment in history, of our church, and of this place.” JULIE ZAUZMER AND MICHELLE BOORSTEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

In a tweet, WMSC officials said the agency had been in “close contact with Metro overnight” on the 3000-series rail cars and that it had dispatched a rail vehicle specialist to West Falls Church rail yard, where the cars involved are being stored. Wiedefeld said that the operator should be have been alerted that the train’s doors were open, but it’s not clear whether such an alert was triggered. The train operator has been placed on leave, which is standard procedure, but Metro officials have

not yet interviewed the person. Wiedefeld said the train’s doors remained open only for a few seconds. Removing the cars from services meant fewer eight-car trains and more six-car trains for the Tuesday morning commute. Officials also adjusted where trains turned back on the Red Line to make another 32 rail cars available. Wiedefeld said the impact on service should be minimal this week. Conveniently, the upcoming closure of six Blue and Yellow line stations, which starts this weekend, means fewer rail cars will be needed. DANA HEDGPETH AND LORI ARATANI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION Metro said Tuesday that nearly 300 of its rail cars will remain out of service until the agency can determine what caused the doors of an Orange Line train to open on its own shortly after the train left the Dunn Loring station on Sunday. The incident, which involved the agency’s 3000-series rail cars, happened around 1 p.m., after the train left the station, and the incident was captured on video by a rider. Metro officials said they learned of the video Monday. The trains were pulled from service overnight Monday. On Tuesday morning, the transit agency announced that it had pulled all 284 cars from the series — roughly 15% of the agency’s 1,200-car fleet — from service. At a midafternoon news conference Tuesday, Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld said officials don’t know what caused the train’s doors to open. He said the cars will remain sidelined until officials can determine a cause and come up with a fix. “When we don’t know the answer to something we take these steps,” he said. THE DISTRICT A recall campaign against D.C. Council member Jack Evans, D-Ward 2, can proceed, an elections panel ruled Monday, clearing the way for the collection of signatures on a petition to unseat the District’s longest-serving lawmaker. Evans, who was first elected in 1991, is facing fallout from news reports about his ties to private legal and consulting clients and an ongoing federal investigation into those relationships. Evans was formally reprimanded by the council in March, and two challengers have filed paperwork to run against him, citing his ethics scandals. But until Monday an effort to recall him in a special election was having trouble getting traction. Last month, the D.C. Board of Elections refused to approve the recall petition, citing technical errors in how it was filed. A dispute also arose over whether the recall campaign’s leader, marijuana legalization activist Adam Eidinger, was actually a resident of Evans’ ward. Those issues were resolved Monday, as the elections board voted unanimously to approve

The recall proponents have 180 days to collect signatures from 10% of Ward 2’s registered voters — roughly 5,200 names. “Now the question is, are citizens going to hold Jack Evans accountable or not?” said Eidinger, who led a 2014 ballot initiative that decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana. “We have six months to collect signatures, and I have a proven track record of putting things on the ballot, but we need community support to get this done.” PETER JAMISON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The overall health grade of the Chesapeake Bay last year — down from 54% in 2017 — according to researchers at the University of Maryland. Scientists say the health of America’s largest estuary declined due to the effects of record-breaking precipitation that increased runoff sediments and allowed more pollutants into the water. Storms pound central U.S.

POLITICS

Mueller and House Dems differ on testimony plan

WEATHER A strong band of storms brought more than 30 tornadoes across the central U.S., damaged homes in Oklahoma, demolished a racetrack grandstand in Missouri and drenched waterlogged states with more water and more flooding. The severe weather started in the southern Plains on Monday night and moved to the northeast. Missouri and parts of Illinois and Arkansas were in the crosshairs Tuesday. By today, the storm was expected to move into the Great Lakes region, where it will weaken. But another storm system was gathering steam for later this week, potentially covering an area from Texas to Chicago, the National Weather Service said. Patrick Marsh, warning coordination meteorologist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center, said eyewitnesses reported 26 tornadoes Monday and six more Tuesday. One tornado, near Tulsa, Okla., was a mile wide with winds in the range of 111 mph to 135 mph. “It certainly isn’t anything to mess with,” Marsh said. A tornado early Tuesday near Tulsa International Airport injured one person and damaged about a dozen homes. The airport was unscathed, but passengers were moved into shelters for about 30 minutes and

several flights were delayed. Storms on Monday night flipped campers at Lucas Oil Speedway in Hickory County, Mo., injuring seven people. The speedway’s grandstand also was destroyed, forcing cancellation of racing this weekend that was expected to draw about 3,000 campers.

Another twister Tuesday afternoon hit a drive-thru wild animal park in southern Missouri. The Webster County Emergency Management director said buildings were damaged at Wild Animal Safari near Strafford, but there were no reports that people or animals were injured. Flooding was also an issue.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation shut down Interstate 40 in El Reno, about 25 miles west of Oklahoma City, because of high water. The National Weather Service said up to 5 inches of rain had fallen since Monday. In Missouri, Gov. Mike Parson declared a state of emergency, citing worsening flood concerns and soil inundation, as well as forecasts calling for severe storms and possible tornadoes. Parson cited numerous instances of flash flooding. “The very heavy rainfall yesterday and today, combined with saturated soil and very high water levels on many rivers and streams have created dangerous conditions around the state,” the Republican governor said in a statement Tuesday. WASHINGTON House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., blocked a bipartisan attempt to limit Chinese companies from contracting with U.S. transit systems, a move that benefited a Chinese governmentbacked manufacturer with a plant in his district, multiple people familiar with the matter said. McCarthy’s behind-the-scenes intervention came as Congress was trying this year to craft a spending compromise to avert another government shutdown. McCarthy pressed lawmakers to strip out language that could

have prevented the company in his district, BYD Motors, from winning federal contracts, and they relented because they feared imperiling the bill. BYD Motors is a division of BYD Co., a giant Chinese manufacturer. Among other things, it makes electric buses that are often used by local governments. Stella Li, BYD Motors president, is a campaign contributor to McCarthy, and the lawmaker spoke at a ribbon cutting for BYD’s California plant in 2017. Police with sledgehammers raid the San Francisco home of Bryan Carmody on May 10.

SAN FRANCISCO A San Francisco journalist whose equipment was seized in a police raid will get back his property, a police attorney said Tuesday at a court hearing, but that did not resolve larger issues in the case that alarmed journalism advocates. Authorities have said the May 10 raids of freelancer Bryan Carmody’s home and office were part of a criminal investigation into what police called the illegal release of a report on the death of former Public Defender Jeff Adachi, who died unexpectedly in February. But media organizations across the country criticized the raids as a violation of California’s shield law, which specifically protects journalists from search warrants. Police voluntarily agreed to return Carmody’s property, but the case will soon be back in court. San Francisco Superior Court Judge Samuel Feng set dates to hear requests by media organizations to unseal affidavits and revoke search warrants signed by judges. City supervisors scolded police for anonymously leaking the report to the press, saying it was an attempt to smear the legacy of Adachi, who frequently sparred with police. Documents shine light on crackdown by Syria

PEAK PERFORMANCE

Sherpa’s 24th climb sets an Everest record

SYRIA Thousands of documents purportedly collected from abandoned Syrian government offices during the country’s civil war reveal the reach of President Bashar al-Assad’s shadowy, labyrinthine security agencies as they spied on the population at large, sought to eliminate dissidents at all cost and systematically persecuted the Kurdish minority even before the onset of protests. The documents were the basis of a report released Tuesday by the Washington-based Syria Justice and Accountability Center, which hopes they can eventually help in the prosecution of perpetrators of war crimes. Titled “Walls Have Ears: An Analysis of Classified Syrian Security Sector Documents,” the report is based on a sample of 5,000 documents and present some of the most damning evidence of state involvement in the bloody crackdown on protesters, dissidents and even foreign journalists in Syria. The documents show the agencies created a network of informants that ensured the government kept a close watch on Syrians’ everyday life. They also offer a rare look into the inner workings of the several security

agencies as they sought to eliminate dissidents through detention, intimidation or killings. Several of the documents identify protesters by name, labeling many as terrorists without any evidence. SJAC has redacted the names to protect their identities. “The documents show clearly that orders were very centralized and came from really high-level officials, including from heads of the security agency themselves, and in lots of documents from the National Security Office,” said Mohammad Al-Abdallah, the director of the group. “This, combined with the nature of the orders — deployment of military units, surveillance, the use of lethal force, persecutions

of the Kurds — all are proof of a systematic state practice, and can be used as evidence to establish both the Syrian state responsibility and the individual criminal responsibility for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity,” he added. Syria’s government, which typically does not comment on security issues nor respond to accusations of human rights violations, justifies its crackdown by describing those who rose up against it as terrorists. The documents were collected from the province of Raqqa and the town of Tabqa in eastern Syria in 2013, and from the western province of Idlib in 2015.

‘QUIET MODE’

There are no words for Uber’s latest perk

Last week, Uber rolled out options for riders to customize their trips, and none of the perks drew quite as much chatter as the new “quiet mode.” Much of the reaction was positive. Some said silent trips could help riders with anxiety, who may be more comfortable knowing they won’t have to chat. Others said the tool is useful for deaf riders. And some women praised the move, saying they were all too familiar with male drivers making inappropriate comments. Japan to West: It’s Abe Shinzo, not Shinzo Abe JAPAN Ahead of a series of important international events in Japan, including a visit from President Trump this weekend, Japan’s foreign minister has said he will issue a request to foreign media: Call our prime minister Abe Shinzo, not Shinzo Abe. “The new Reiwa era was ushered in, and we are hosting the Group of 20 summit. As many news organizations write Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, it is desirable for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s name to be written in a similar manner,” Foreign Minister Taro Kono said Tuesday, according to the Mainichi Shimbun. The Japanese diplomat says the family name, Abe, should be first when referred to in English, as it is when it is written or spoken in Japanese. The convention for Englishlanguage transliterations of Japanese names, however, has long put the family name second. The custom is believed to date back to the 19th century, during a period when the Meiji dynasty reformed Japan’s complicated naming culture — and encouraged both foreigners and Japanese people to write their family name second. It is unclear whether the U.S. government will conform to Kono’s request. It also remains unclear whether the entire Japanese government is behind the idea. ADAM TAYLOR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A Fox town hall debate 2020 Democratic hopefuls divided on whether to appear on conservative network

POLITICS Bernie Sanders appeared on a Fox News town hall and attracted nearly 2.6 million viewers. Elizabeth Warren turned down a similar chance while branding the network a “hate-for-profit racket.” Whether to appear on the nation’s top-rated cable news channel has become an unlikely marker for the divergent strategies top Democrats vying for the White House are employing. They are seeking to deny a second term to one of Fox News Channel’s most avid viewers, President Trump. It’s forcing them to weigh the possibility of extended airtime in front of conservative audiences who could be impressed against possibly alienating some of their own party’s primary voters, who don’t want to encourage what they see as the network’s overly sympathetic relationship to the Trump administration and other Republican causes. “It is very tough to win an American election and concede blue-collar, middle-class votes. And they don’t watch MSNBC,” said Rory McShane, a GOP strategist. “They watch Fox News.” Complicating matters is the Democratic National Committee’s decision in March to bar Fox News from hosting one of the party’s 2020 presidential primary debates, with DNC Chairman Tom Perez saying the network isn’t “fair and neutral enough” to do so. Still, enough Democrats have refused to shun the network that even Trump has taken notice. “What’s going on with Fox, by the way? … They’re putting more Democrats on than you have Republicans,” Trump said Monday at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania. Sanders, a senator from Vermont, drew his largest TV town hall audience of the primary season when he appeared on

Democratic presidential candidates (from left) Pete Buttigieg, Bernie Sanders and Amy Klobuchar have all participated in Fox News town halls this year, with Kirsten Gillibrand scheduled to have one on June 2.

Fox News last month. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, Minn., did her own town hall on the channel and is a frequent Fox News guest. Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Ind., drew an average of 1.1 million viewers for Sunday’s appearance. And Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, N.Y., will have a Fox News town hall June 2. In declining her own town hall invitation, Warren, a senator from Massachusetts, tweeted, “Fox News is a hate-for-profit racket that gives a megaphone to racists and conspiracists — it’s designed to turn us against each other, risking life and death consequences.” Sen. Kamala Harris, Calif., also isn’t interested in doing a Fox News town hall. And others have faced backlash for not flatly refusing to do one. “I understand the short-term incentives for Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg to appear on Fox

On Fox News, Buttigieg blasts network’s hosts Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg said during his Fox News town hall Sunday that a lot of people in his party “were critical of me for even doing this.” He added, “I get where that’s coming from,” then blasted network personalities Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham for their views on immigration. “Fox & Friends” co-host Brian Kilmeade bristled at that, saying on air Monday, “Don’t hop on our channel and continue to put down the other hosts. … If you feel that negative about it, don’t come.” (AP)

Obama, tweeted last month. But Warren’s decision was panned by Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of ABC’s “The View,” a program where Democratic presidential hopefuls have lined up to appear for its large, presumably bipartisan, daytime viewership. “If you can’t face a Fox audience, you can’t face the U.S.,” Goldberg said. “It’s that simple.” Joe Brettell, a Texas-based public relations consultant and media strategist, said “both Harris and Warren were playing to the crowd to a certain extent.” “But the reality of it is, the rule of thumb for any candidate in this day and age should be to actively and genuinely engage with the media to drive their message,” Brettell said. “Because the half-life of a memorable quip or a solid quote or a good moment is endlessly reverberated on social media.” WILL WEISSERT (AP)

POLITICS House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler gaveled open a Trump-Russia hearing Tuesday with an empty witness chair and a stern warning that former White House counsel Don McGahn will be held in contempt for failing to appear in defiance of the committee’s subpoena. “Our subpoenas are not optional,” Nadler said. A contempt vote is not expected until June because of a weeklong recess. Democrats are facing yet another attempt by President Trump to stonewall their investigations. This time they’re blocked from hearing from McGahn — a chief eyewitness to the president’s handling of the federal Russia investigation — on orders from the White House. Rep. Doug Collins, the ranking Republican on the committee, called the session a “circus” and said the chairman preferred a public “fight over fact-finding.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, backed by Nadler, is taking a step-by-step approach to the confrontations with Trump. Democrats are encouraged by an early success on that route, as a federal judge ruled against Trump on Monday in a financial records dispute with Congress. Trump’s team filed notice Tuesday that they would appeal. But Pelosi’s strategy hasn’t been swift enough for some Democrats, who feel they should launch a formal impeachment inquiry. The Redskins are evaluating Dwayne Haskins, left, and Case Keenum for the starting QB job.

STARS COME OUT

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins was on the run as two defenders closed in on him during one of the team’s first workouts. Coaches don’t expect to dial up too many scrambling plays for their rookie passer this fall, but springtime is good for discovering possibilities. As Haskins moved outside the tackle, he unleashed a crossbody pass that found his target in stride. Who says Haskins is just a pocket passer? The Redskins this week began workouts without pads or contact, and these glorified walkthroughs provide some insight into potential playcalling. Coach Jay Gruden has two new quarterbacks to teach his system to, and the quicker learner between Case Keenum and Haskins will win the starting job come September. That’s assuming third-string passer Colt McCoy, who’s still recovering from a broken leg, doesn’t make a move in training camp. Gruden should pick the player who looks more ready to immediately lead and not waste the season on molding Haskins. Keenum appeared sharp in his first practice, too, finding options between linebackers as his rookie receivers tried to make an impression.

It’s all about the eyes, being able to scan the field without staring down targets so defenders don’t know where the ball will go. It’s the difference between touchdowns and turnovers, and the only way to learn this craft is through film study. Haskins and Keenum must instantly recognize defenses, and Monday at Redskins Park was their first test. “When you know where your eyes are supposed to be,” Haskins said, “it makes it a lot easier being able to read safety keys and read protections. You play fast when you know what you’re doing.” If only it was that simple. Gruden and his passers repeatedly spoke of patience with Haskins, referring to his progress as “baby steps.” Haskins and Keenum know maybe 10% of the playbook now, but hopefully they will know nearly all of it come training camp. The next few weeks of OTAs and minicamp will tip Gruden toward a front-runner when they arrive in Richmond. “I think we have to grade them based on production out here every day,” Gruden said. “Every day is a new grade, every day you see how they’re developing, see how they’re getting better. … Somebody is going to rise, I would think.” It would be easy for Gruden to simply make Haskins the opening-day starter. The battle begins: Haskins, Keenum vie for starting gig

Several vets skip OTAs Attendance was good in the first two days of Redskins voluntary organized team activities in Ashburn, but there were some notable absences at workouts this week. Players who have not been there include running back Adrian Peterson, cornerback Josh Norman, tight end Jordan Reed, offensive tackle Trent Williams and nose tackle Daron Payne. Quarterbacks Colt McCoy and Alex Smith were not present as each is recovering from surgery for a broken leg. 15th overall draft selection immediately begin what’s hopefully a 12-year NFL career like the last person in Washington to wear No. 7 — Joe Theismann, who was on the sideline Monday watching practice. But Gruden runs a meritocracy, as shown with his benching of Robert Griffin III in 2014 despite the team’s heavy investment in him. The QB decision may also decide whether Gruden’s tenure extends into 2020, so he must choose wisely. “Competition makes you better and that’s what the spring is about,” Keenum said.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No. 6 player in the world and a semifinalist in last year’s Citi Open, will headline a group that includes three top 10 ATP players this year. D.C.-based venture capitalist Mark Ein, who took over management of Washington’s Citi Open this year, announced the additions Monday. Local product Frances Tiafoe, ranked No. 35, is also on the slate. On the women’s side, the 2017 U.S. Open champion, No. 7 Sloane Stephens, below, and Canadian teenage phenom Bianca Andreescu, No. 22, have committed to play. Joining Tsitsipas and Tiafoe are past Citi Open champions No. 7 Kei Nishikori, who won the tournament in 2015, and No. 16 Gael Monfils, who won in 2016. (THE WASHINGTON POST))

Warriors taking respite NBA FINALS And now, they wait. Again. The Warriors have gotten used to going to the NBA Finals, and their win in Portland on Monday night clinched their fifth consecutive trip. They’ve also gotten used to waiting for those finals to begin, with long layoffs after the Western Conference finals becoming their norm. By the time Game 1 of the NBA Finals arrives in Milwaukee or Toronto on May 30, it’ll be a 10-day gap between games for the Warriors. It matches the length of the break that the Warriors handled in 2017, and this marks the third time in this five-year run of finals trips that they’ve had at least a week off. It is much-needed rest, too. The Warriors clinched the series in Portland without Kevin Durant, DeMarcus Cousins and Andre Iguodala — all sidelined by injuries. It’s not clear yet if Durant and Cousins will be back in time for the finals. Plenty of other Warriors are dealing with bumps and bruises. Accruing rust is always a concern during days without games, but the Warriors surely feel the obvious advantage — rest — outweighs any drawbacks, especially after they were stretched to seven games by Houston last year in the West finals and had only two days off before the NBA Finals. “We definitely want to get our guys healthy,” Warriors forward Draymond Green said. “We

need to get Andre back healthy, DeMarcus and Kevin. We need those guys going into the finals.” Down by 17 with less than two minutes to play in the third quarter at Portland, the easiest thing for the Warriors would have been to let off the gas and try to clinch the series at Oracle Arena tonight. Instead, they turned a 95-78 deficit into a 119-117 overtime win — outscoring the Blazers 41-22 in the final 19 minutes of the game. “We could have said Game 5 was our game,” Warriors star Stephen Curry said. “But we saw how long that break was going to be and we wanted to take advantage of it.”

It’s a long break, but it’s not a record-setting one. The longest gap between the conference finals and NBA Finals came in 1982, when the Lakers sat around for 12 days before beginning their series against Philadelphia. “The players are bored and just want to play,” then-Lakers coach Pat Riley said on the eve of that series. “It’s been so long since we played, I just hope we remember how.” They did remember: The Lakers won Game 1, and ultimately prevailed in six games. Historically, teams with at least a one-week gap before Game 1 of the NBA Finals are 14-11 in the series. TIM REYNOLDS (AP)

contemporary product,” says Patrick Bloomfield, speaking on behalf of the development team. “What I liked was that [the developers] took old bones and made them look new and modern,” Lee says. “The building isn’t just the same old thing.” There are two units on each of the four floors. Four one-bedroom units face the street. Four twobedrooms are in the rear. The top-floor two-bedroom unit is a penthouse with a private deck. Newton House is named after Mary Newton Foote Henderson, who championed the creation of Meridian Hill Park in the District and was known as the “Empress of 16th Street.” “She represents urban planning at its best,” Bloomfield says. “She realized that creating green spaces that intertwine with the cultural fabric of a modern city are integral to its long-lasting success.”

While newly built condos must meet required standards for energy efficiency, the four-unit condo building at 523525 Montana Ave. NE is designed to qualify for the highest level of green certification. Known as the Baptisia, the condo developed by Tanya Topolewski of True Turtle could achieve a “passive house” designation, which means the building has the potential to produce nearly as much energy as it consumes. Green features include an airtight building envelope and energyefficient systems that allow the building to use 90% less energy for heating and cooling than an existing, similarly sized property. The first two units, available now, are a 2,400-square-foot residence with three bedrooms, a den and four bathrooms priced at $979,000; and a 1,900-square-foot unit with three bedrooms, a loft and four bathrooms priced at $799,000. Historic, yet modern feel A 19th-century home gives rise to boutique condos in Northwest THE DISTRICT On a shaded, gently sloping residential street, Newton House still stands out among the D.C. rowhouses and low-rise apartments. The original stand-alone house on Florida Avenue NW is a charming 19th-century wood Victorian structure. But now there’s more to Newton House. P.T. Blooms Real Estate Development, in partnership with WOD Development, acquired the property, renovated the interior and built a four-story addition. Newton House has become a modern eight-unit condominium in a neighborhood that’s a halfblock from bustling 14th Street NW and not far from the U Street corridor, Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights and Logan Circle. Albert Lee had been looking to

buy a two-bedroom condo for a couple of years but couldn’t find one that struck a chord. “Frankly, a lot of the new buildings look very much the same and didn’t appeal to me,” he says. But when he took a hard-hat tour of Newton House, walking through the private entrance of a one-bedroom unit facing the street, his excitement was palpable. “He came in looking for something else and fell in love instantly with this home,” says Liza Pence, sales manager with Urban Pace, which is handling sales. “ W hen I saw this unit I thought, ‘It will be snapped up if I don’t do something,’ ” Lee recalls. He was the first person to view the property and the first to sign a contract. The renovated and expanded Newton House is a work in progress, but the buyers are expected to be able to move in relatively soon. The house had been converted into a three-family building

Options if condo is underwater

A. In many parts of the country, the Great Recession is a thing of the past. Overall, home prices have risen some 40% over the past six years. Zillow reports that the median home price is $226,000 and is up 6.6% over a year ago. But it’s not the case in every metro area. Some homeowners have discovered that their home values have not even returned

to where they were before the Great Recession. Sadly, your mom is one of these homeowners. She bought a condo at the height of the housing boom and now owns a home that is underwater, meaning that it’s worth less than the amount owed on the mortgage. So, what should your mom do? Well, she could continue to

GETTY IMAGES

Q. My mother is 90 and needs to move from her condo to an assisted living facility. She bought her condo at the height of the market boom for about $250,000, and it is now worth about $100,000 less than she paid for it. She has a mortgage and probably owes more on her loan than what the property is worth. What consequences could she bear if she were to simply stop paying on the mortgage, and what other options might she have? live in the condo and pay its expenses. She could simply walk away from the unit and suffer the consequences of her failure to pay her mortgage payments and her condominium association assessments. She could try to rent her unit and cover all her expenses (if her building will allow rentals). Or she can try to sell the property.

The best option is to sell. While the condominium isn’t worth what is owed on the mortgage, she can work with her lender on a short sale. For the sake of discussion, let’s say she owes $150,000 on the condominium, and the market for a unit like hers is around $140,000. In this situation, she might only net $120,000 after paying closing

costs and real estate broker expenses. She’d be short $30,000 of the true amount that the lender would normally be due. If she lets the lender know she’s likely going to be short, and the lender agrees to work with her, the lender might be willing to allow her to sell the condominium unit and take the $120,000 payment in full satisfaction of the $150,000 owed. This is probably the best-case scenario for your mother. That said, we don’t know your mom’s financial situation. Most lenders will want to see her financial picture before agreeing to let her off the hook on the loan. If she has considerable assets, and has $30,000 that can be liquidated and used to pay off the lender in full, the lender may allow her to sell the condo but require the full payment on the loan as soon as the assets can be liquidated. CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK

Head and the Heart gets offbeat

RICK T. WILKING (GETTY IMAGES)

On the edge of greatness With ‘Dedicated,’ Carly Rae Jepsen is content to eschew superstardom ALBUM REVIEW Carly Rae Jepsen has found success by never quite going all the way. In 2007, the smiley singer from British Columbia made it to the semifinals of “Canadian Idol” before getting the boot. In 2012, she topped the Hot 100 with the chipper and contagious “Call Me Maybe,” then struggled to create another radio hit. For 2015’s “Emotion,” she reinvented herself as an indie-disco queen with help from members of Blood Orange and Vampire Weekend; the album earned rave reviews — and sold like something posted on Bandcamp. Remarkably, Jepsen has never seemed too bummed out by these near misses, perhaps because

not sealing the deal is what her music is all about. The 33-yearold almost exclusively describes the quest for romantic bliss — not the thing itself, but the exquisite pain of longing for it. “I need to find a love to love me with no hesitation,” she sings in “Right Words Wrong Time,” a throbbing cut from “Dedicated,” her record released Friday. What comes across, as always, is that she’s addicted to the chase. So is her audience: Jepsen’s ultra-devoted fans are fixated on the idea that their hero is underappreciated. That sense of injustice is so central to Jepsen’s appeal that it’s hard to know whether folks would still love her if she actually went and grabbed the platinum ring.

Well, no reason to worry: To l i sten to “Dedicated” is to hear a cultfave s i n g e r rated exactly “Dedicated” as she should Carly Rae Jepsen be. Glossier than “Emotion” but less eager than 2012’s “Kiss,” the album is an expertly designed effort from a skilled classicist who appears little interested in the stylistic adaptation required for true superstardom. Having broken up with her boyfriend during the making of “Dedicated,” Jepsen co-wrote the album’s electro-ballad closer, “Real Love,” with James Flannigan, an English studio pro with

whom she’s now in a relationship. Even here, though, her crush remains characteristically out of reach: “All I want is real, real love / But I don’t know a thing about it.” Occasionally, in tracks such as “The Sound,” Jepsen musters enough feeling in her high, slightly raspy voice that you y can understand why her fans ns view her with a kind of protectiveness; iveness; only Robyn does crying-in-theg-in-theclub more vividly. Too much of “Dedicated” cated” blurs together in a mix of lovelorn confessions and throwback owback grooves you’d have to listen isten to obsessively to differentiate. entiate. For some, that’s just the he invitation they crave. MIKAEL AEL WOOD

Any The Head and the Heart fans looking for the folksy rock they fell in love with will be disappointed by the band’s heavily produced fourth record, “Living Mirage,” which came out Friday. The shift to pop is realized on the first two tracks, “See You Through My Eyes” and “Missed Connection” — arguably the album’s weakest songs. Gone are the idiosyncrasies that colored the group’s early work. The album has some moments of brilliance, but they seem lost among a collection of songs that don’t hold the same weight as the band’s past work. RAGAN CLARK (AP)

‘I Am Easy to Find’ is the alt-rockers’ most complex album yet ALBUM REVIEW The new album from The National starts off as you might expect: There’s the traditional melancholy surrounded by complex, layered instruments. But just past the two-minute mark on the first track, something unusual happens: A woman’s

voice simply takes over. Gail Ann Dorsey, known for playing in David Bowie’s band, steps up ‘I Am Easy as singer Matt to Find’ B e r n i n g e r The National fades, and the two sing in harmony until the abrupt end of “You Had Your Soul With You.” It’s no quirk: Women’s voices are all over “I Am Easy to Find,”

The National rises to a new challenge

Can you tell which member of The National missed the no-shaving memo?

The National’s record released Friday. The album is produced by director Mike Mills, and it’s accompanied by a 26-minute film by Mills starring Alicia

Vikander. The film charts the life of a woman from baby to death and, fittingly, The National invites numerous female singers to join on the 16-track set.

Holly Hunter joins cast for Season 2 of HBO series “Succession”

Lyrically, there is Berninger’s old sad-sack approach — “I’m just so tired of thinking about everything,” he sings on “Quiet Light.” But we also get the strange and wonderful memory song “Not in Kansas.” Other highlights include the brilliant, swelling “Rylan”; the airy “Oblivions,” with strings and military drumming; and the achingly beautiful “Light Years.” In other places, the band gets too pretentious for its own good — like on the tedious “Dust Swirls in Strange Light.” But this is a more dense, challenging and complex album than any other National output. This isn’t a collection of alt-rock songs. This is high art. MARK KENNEDY (AP)

“Luke P. couldn’t come up with a talent so he just said ‘I love you’ and hoped for the best.” @ADDISONCLARKK, joking about “The

Bachelorette” contestant’s cringeworthy confession during the season’s second episode. During a “Mr. Right” competition where the men had to showcase their talents, Luke P. instead took the stage and told “Bachelorette” Hannah Brown that he was “starting to fall in love.” Though the tactic worked on Brown — who crowned him winner of the competition — Twitter fans found his early admission to be a red flag.

“50 years in, and ‘Sesame Street’ is still breaking down barriers and working to represent those that need it most.” @DESIGNERDADDY, praising the long-running educational program for introducing new Muppet Karli, who is in foster care and lives with her “for-now” parents. Karli and her foster parents are introduced in a series of three online videos, which explain to young viewers the role of foster parents and why someone like Karli might live with them. Karli is the latest addition to an expanded cast of “Sesame” Muppets tackling various issues: Julia, a Muppet with autism, was introduced in 2017, and Lily, a homeless Muppet, debuted in December.

“There are officially 49 states in the U.S.” @NOITSKATELYN, blasting Alabama

Public Television over its refusal to air a recent episode of the children’s cartoon “Arthur” that shows a same-sex wedding. In a statement provided to NBC News, APT’s director of programming, Mike McKenzie, said “The vast majority of parents will not have heard about the content. ... Because of this, we felt it would be a violation of trust to broadcast the episode.” The move has drawn fresh criticism of Alabama, which was already under fire for enacting a law this month that bans virtually all abortions in the state.

“Céline Dion is the only person in the whole world who is well worthy of being called a legend.” @SWIFTMYLIFELINE, tweeting about

the singer’s Monday appearance on James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke.” Dion began singing almost immediately after getting in the car, including a strippeddown rendition of “Baby Shark.” After saying she might own 10,000 pairs of shoes, she handed out a few pairs to people on the Las Vegas Strip. Then she and Corden reenacted a scene from “Titanic” as they sang “My Heart Will Go On” in the Bellagio fountain.
