In close quarters, all mayors smell the same

A Florida family thought someone was trying to break into their apartment when they heard knocking sounds at 4 a.m. It turns out a 5-foot alligator was outside their front door Friday morning. And so were Tampa police officers. Police and Florida Fish and Wildlife officers caught the gator and returned it to the wild. It was the second such alligator-knocking incident in the South in recent weeks. (AP)

A blimp on Friday made an emergency landing at a construction site next to a Philadelphia highway. No injuries were reported on the two-passenger blimp or on the ground where it landed. A section of the highway was closed briefly while crews secured the area and inspected the blimp. It’s unclear what caused the blimp to go down. The blimp displayed advertising for an adhesives company. (AP)

Female WWII pilots allowed in Arlington

Elaine Danforth Harmon was one of more than 1,000 women who flew planes during World War II.

of the 38 women who died during their service. While the WASPs were recognized as veterans in 1977 and awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010, the Army argued that because Arlington Cemetery is run by the Army rather than the Department of Veterans Affairs, they could not be buried there unless the law was changed. At first, Harmon’s grand-

daughter Erin Miller was skeptical that new legislation was even possible. “I’m a lawyer, and I was like: ‘God, Congress can’t do anything. That would be a nightmare. I don’t want them involved,’ ” she recalled. But after meeting with hundreds of representatives who pushed for the change, she was overwhelmed by the support. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, D-Md., the longest-serving woman in Congress, introduced the bill in the Senate in January. Rep. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., a retired Air Force colonel who took office last year, pushed it in the House. “Today we have righted a terrible wrong,” Mikulski said in a statement. “If they were good enough to fly for our country, risk their lives and earn the Congressional Gold Medal, they should be good enough for Arlington.” “I had to leave work early because I couldn’t concentrate — that’s how happy I am,” Miller said Friday after the bill was signed. Rain doesn’t dampen first D.C. Bike Ride As many as 8,000 cyclists turned out Sunday morning for a tour of some of Washington’s most famous sites as part of the first D.C. Bike Ride. Organizers said the rain didn’t deter cyclists from joining the ride, which covered 17-plus miles and offered a car-free tour of the nation’s capital. Riders cruised past the Washington Monument, the White House and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Participants concluded their journey with a celebration near the Capitol. (TWP)

ARLINGTON Female pilots who served in the air forces during World War II can now be buried at Arlington National Cemetery, thanks to legislation President Barack Obama signed Friday. Women Airforce Service Pilots, or WASPs, were buried at the military cemetery from 2002 until 2015, when then-Army Secretary John McHugh ruled that they never should have been allowed to be under then-current law. The family of 2nd Lt. Elaine Danforth Harmon, a Marylander who died last year at 95, has been fighting to change the policy ever since. Harmon was one of more than a thousand women who flew planes for transport and training during the war. During the war, Congress voted down a bill that would have granted the female pilots military status. The Army wouldn’t even pay to send home the bodies

Metro shakes up top with high-level firings

Party balloons cause scare at White House ANDREW HARNIK (AP)

TRANSPORTATION Metro fired 20 managers Friday in what the agency’s top executive described as a step toward “restructuring” the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority after months of subway safety problems, service disruptions and financial woes. General Manager Paul Wiedefeld sent an email to Metro employees announcing the firing of the managers, seven of whom he identified only as senior managers. More than one-third of the fired managers worked in subway operations, Wiedefeld said. The firings were “immediate, effective today,” Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said Friday. The 20 managers were among about 650 “at-will” employees of the transit agency, meaning they could be let go at the general manager’s discretion. Wiedefeld, hired as Metro’s general manager and chief executive in late November, has vowed to streamline the organization, which employs about 13,000 people, a vast majority of whom are members of three labor unions. Metro declined to specify what departments the fired managers worked in or what any of the managers’ individual job

THE DISTRICT

In an email to employees on Friday, Metro GM Paul Wiedefeld said more than a third of 20 managers who were fired worked in subway operations.

responsibilities were. “I hope you will join me in respecting the privacy of these individuals, and note that I will not be commenting about individual employees,” Wiedefeld told the agency’s workforce in the email. After decades of maintenance neglect, the 118-mile subway system has been beset by safetyrelated infrastructure problems, especially over the past year and a half, with electrical-related track fires becoming common. Meanwhile, an array of the agency’s financial problems have come to light, stemming from Metro’s mismanagement of federal grant money and from a decline in operating revenue partly caused by a steady drop in subway ridership.

As Wiedefeld struggles to revitalize the agency, officials across the region, including members of Congress, have demanded that he do more to hold Metro managers accountable for the problems and fire those who fail to perform. Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, D-Va., a longtime supporter of Metro yet one of its toughest critics on Capitol Hill, has been among those calling for heads to roll at the transit agency. He applauded Wiedefeld’s decision. “People have to be held accountable,” Connolly said. “The Metro general manager has been urged to do that. I hope this sends a signal across the entire Metro organization that safety and customer service must come first.” PAUL DUGGAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A cluster of balloons caused a security scare at the White House on Sunday afternoon, two days after a man approached a guard booth outside the complex and was shot after he refused to put down the pistol he was carrying. The U.S. Secret Service said some party balloons floated over the executive complex, and a couple of the balloons landed on the property. The scene was cleared about 1:20 p.m., the agency said. President Obama left D.C. on Saturday for a week-long trip to Vietnam and Japan and was not at the White House on Sunday, the Secret Service said. A George Washington University hospital spokeswoman said the man shot Friday was still in critical condition on Sunday. (TWP/AP)

Airstrike on top Taliban figure signals U.S. shift ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN The U.S. airstrike thought to have killed Taliban chief Akhtar Mohammad Mansour over the weekend represents another escalation in U.S. involvement in the war in Afghanistan and signals a new willingness to target senior Taliban leaders on Pakistani soil, analysts and officials said Sunday. Although U.S. officials were awaiting final confirmation of Mansour’s death, the strike early Saturday marks the most aggressive U.S. military action in Pakistan since the 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden. It is also believed to be the first time that the U.S. military directly targeted the top leader of the Afghan Taliban, which the U.S. government still does not officially designate a terrorist group. “This is an unprecedented move to decapitate the Taliban leadership in its safe haven of Pakistan,” said Bruce Riedel, a South Asia expert of the Brookings Institution. “It exposes Pakistan’s role in promoting and protecting the Taliban, and will

provoke a crisis in U.S.-Pakistan relations.” But unlike the bin Laden raid, which prompted Mansour outrage in Pakistan, the reaction on Sunday from Pakistani government and military leaders was fairly muted, even as Afghan officials cheered and described the attack as proof of the Afghan Taliban’s deep presence in Pakistan. U.S. officials said the drone strike was justified because

Drooping trees may be ‘sleeping’ Do trees sleep? Maybe. Scientists from Austria, Finland and Hungary used lasers to measure the overnight movements of birch trees. During the hours of darkness, the trees appeared to relax, or droop, their branches at the tips by as much as 4 inches. The team said the drooping could be due to a loss of internal water pressure. But they cautiously offered another explanation: “The fact that some branches started returning to their daytime position ... before sunrise” suggests that the trees are following the same circadian rhythms (sleepwake cycles) of other flora and fauna. Overtime rule could cut into work flexibility The U.S. Department of Labor says the new overtime rule issued last week could give some 4.2 million additional workers more money or more free time. But those who represent employers say these workers are likely to see a lot less flexibility on the job. The new rule, scheduled to take effect Dec. 1, raises the salary level for employees eligible to receive overtime pay to $47,476 a year from the current $23,660. Workers who may be used to leaving early in exchange for answering email from the couch could find such freedoms curtailed. The Labor Department has said that “nothing prohibits working whenever, wherever or however the worker and the employer agree,” but flexible hours can be harder to track. Employers’ lawyers say the rule could disproportionately affect young college graduates, known to value being able to come and go as they please as long as the work gets done. It could even limit remote access to work email. Although some workers may prefer a sharper line between work and home, the threat of legal action is real, says Tammy McCutchen of law firm Littler Mendelson: “Especially for this group of employees, who are used to being [salaried], the worry is they’re not going to report all the hours they put in — until, of course, they one day get fired and file the class-action [lawsuit].” JENA MCGREGOR

Egypt sends submarine to hunt for black boxes

A close look at the new FDA nutrition label

First lady Michelle Obama on Friday unveiled the much-anticipated overhaul of the nutrition labels

you see on packaged products at the grocery store. Most manufacturers will be required to use the new format by July 26, 2018. While the label retains the familiar black-and-white look, some categories and calculations have changed. Here are six critical updates. ARIANA EUNJUNG CHA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

1. Serving sizes

4. Multi-serving products (not shown)

Serving sizes now reflect what people currently eat — rather than whatever 1 the companies decide seems reasonable. Serving sizes that were formerly equivalent to only a few 2 chips might now reflect the whole package.

For some food products that could be consumed in multiple sittings — or in one single swoop — there will now be two columns, to indicate the per-serving and per-package calorie and nutrition information.

5

2. Calories The total count is now highlighted in huge letters rather than being in the same type size as the other nutrition information. This change, FDA officials have said, reflects the country’s growing obesity epidemic.

5. Fat

6 3

Based on a growing body of research that shows that the type of fat is more important than the amount, the “Calories from Fat” line will disappear. However, “Total Fat” and the subcategories “Saturated Fat” and “Trans Fat” will still be required.

3. Added sugars Added sugars are measured in both grams and as a percentage of daily value. This change will allow consumers to tell the difference between sugars added during processing versus sugars that come naturally, such as in fresh fruits and dairy.

279

6. Sodium and dietary fiber The percentage of daily value for sodium and dietary fiber will change based on the 2015-2020 dietary recommendations. They call for up to 28 grams of fiber and up to 2,300 mg of sodium a day, down from 2,400 mg.

Not-Clinton vs. not-Trump Poll: Likely nominees are tied in a November matchup as both reach record unfavorability

WASHINGTONPOST.COM STYLE

What Warren tells the world with her sleeves

AP PHOTOS

POLITICS The coming presidential race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump begins in a virtual dead heat, a competition between two candidates viewed unfavorably by a majority of the current electorate and with voters motivated as much by whom they don’t like as by whom they do, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Never in the history of the Post-ABC poll have the two major party nominees been viewed as harshly as Clinton and Trump. Nearly 6 in 10 registered voters say they have negative impressions of both major candidates. Clinton’s net negative rating among registered voters is minus-16, while Trump’s is minus-17, though Trump’s numbers have improved since March. Among all adults, Trump’s net negatives are higher than those of Clinton. As the primaries are set to draw to a close next month, Democrats and Republicans have begun to consolidate around their presumptive nominees, even though Republican voters remain divided on the question of whether Trump reflects the core values of their party. Partisans in both parties say they are confident that they will be unified for the fall campaign,

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump have set a new standard for unfavorability as they head into the general election.

though one-fifth of Republicans express doubts. In all, the survey foreshadows a hard-fought, competitive and negative general election. At this point, the two candidates are in a statistical dead heat among registered voters, with Trump favored by 46 percent and Clinton favored by 44 percent. That represents an 11-point shift toward the presumptive Republican nominee since March. Among all adults, Clinton holds a six-point lead (48 percent to 42 percent), down from 18 points in March. Nonetheless, Clinton is seen as having superior experience, temperament and personality to be president. Trump is viewed as unqualified by a majority of adults, but he has strong appeal

as the anti-Clinton candidate who can bring change to Washington. Meanwhile, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont enjoys the most positive rating of the three. Among registered voters, Sanders is net positive — 49 percent to 41 percent — and has seen his image improve steadily the longer he has been a candidate. Among those registered voters who say they favor Clinton, 48 percent say their vote is in support of the candidate while an identical percentage say their vote is mainly to oppose Trump. Among Trump’s backers, 44 percent say they are casting an affirmative vote for the Republican, while 53 percent say their motivation is to oppose Clinton. Overall, 51 percent of voters

call themselves satisfied with their choice of nominees while 44 percent want a third-party option. The poll tested a hypothetical three-way race that included Trump, Clinton and Mitt Romney, the GOP’s 2012 nominee and one of Trump’s most outspoken critics. Among registered voters, Clinton got 37 percent, Trump 35 percent and Romney 22 percent. Underscoring the divisions within the GOP ranks, Romney gets a third of Republicans in a three-way race. The poll was conducted May 16-19 among a national sample of 1,005 adults. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. DAN BALZ AND SCOTT CLEMENT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

National Rifle Association endorses Donald Trump for president

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren moves with the fleetfooted bounce of a featherweight fighter — an agile pugilist who has been using Twitter to deliver jabs and hooks to Republican frontrunner Donald Trump. In person, too, her style is aerodynamic, with her short sandy hair, rimless glasses, necklace-free decolletage and tiny stud earrings. And her sleeves are always rolled up — literally and metaphorically. She is ready to get her hands dirty. Warren favors trim jackets in bold, TV-friendly colors: turquoise and raspberry, purple and shades of Twitter blue. She likes bracelet sleeves, which end several inches above her wrists, but she typically does not wear a bracelet or even a watch. On the public stage, her clothes always suggest that she is ready to get down to business. In her own tailored, jeweltone way, Warren has adopted the traditional aesthetic of male politicians, who signal their intention to move from abstract policy promises into frank, regular-folk talk by removing their suit jackets and rolling up their shirt sleeves. Warren traffics in empathy, but she doesn’t need to remove her jacket to be understood. Those cropped sleeves, those bare forearms, make her look as though she could immediately dive into a messy situation without pausing to worry about her nice frock. ROBIN GIVHAN

Updated Work Plan and June Safety Surges What is SafeTrack?

Project Details

SafeTrack is a yearlong plan to improve safety and reliability on the Metrorail system. The plan puts safety first by completing more track work and prioritizing the most needed repairs. In addition,15 planned “Safety Surges” throughout the year will cause segments of rail lines to be shut down or experience continuous single tracking for extended periods. While we know many riders will be affected, this is the only way to complete the work in a timely manner that maximizes safety. We thank you for your patience.

Date

• There will be increased track work on nights, weekends and during some rush hours. Always check wmata.com and sign up for MetroAlerts to “know before you go.” • Beginning June 3, and throughout the duration of SafeTrack, Metrorail will close at midnight, 7 days a week. The last train may depart your station before midnight, so check wmata.com/stations for information.

THREE POINTERS

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

A budding rivalry: Belmont could be the rubber match fast early pace on the wet track. Maybe Nyquist was trying to steal the Preakness like American Pharoah did last year in similar conditions, but American Pharoah never tired and proved he was the rare Triple Crown champion. Exaggerator stalked Nyquist until the stretch, then delivered a big kick to win by 3½ lengths. Was Exaggerator’s victory simply a matter of track conditions? He had won two previous races on muddy tracks. “I could feel Exaggerator coming,” Nyquist jockey Mario Gutierrez said. “There was nothing we could do. We swung out late, but they were tough. We tried, but just didn’t get there.” That’s a tip-of-the-cap comment by a losing jockey who was 3-0 in Triple Crown races. Gutierrez knew Exaggerator was simply better. Nyquist’s owners and trainer, though, were measured in defeat. “It’s a bummer, of course,” Nyquist trainer Doug O’Neill said after the race. “Our horse, God, he’s such an amazing horse. I can’t wait to see him in

3 Why he was a no-show MATT SLOCUM (AP)

If thoroughbred racing can’t have a Triple Crown winner, a hearty rivalry isn’t a bad consolation. Preakness Stakes victor Exaggerator and Kentucky Derby champ Nyquist could meet once more in the Belmont Stakes on June 11. Preakness runner-up Cherry Wine and perhaps a half dozen others may enter Triple Crown’s final leg, but this year is all about Nyquist and Exaggerator — and it’s still not settled which is the better 3-year-old colt. Nyquist won their first four meetings since last year, but Exaggerator nearly caught him in the Derby and then dusted his nemesis on a sloppy track on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Nyquist still has the overall edge, but Exaggerator is looking the better of the two now. The turning point came as the rivals neared the final eighth mile. Nyquist was tiring badly after he set a ridiculously

Kentucky Derby runner-up Exaggerator won the Preakness on Saturday.

Tragedy at the track Two horses died in Saturday’s first four races. One was owned by Gretchen and Roy Jackson — who 10 years earlier owned Derby winner Barbaro, who shattered bones in his right hind leg at the Preakness and was euthanized seven months later. The Jacksons’ 4-year-old filly Pramedya was euthanized on the track Saturday after she broke down during the fourth race. a little bit, give him a big kiss and a pat on the head because he’s still a winner in our book. “They’re not machines.

Being 8-for-8, we kept thinking that this horse is never going to lose, but they all lose one time or another. We’ll be OK.” The Belmont can be the tiebreaker between two good horses that split the first two legs of the Triple Crown. Derby winner Swale avenged his Preakness loss to Gate Dancer by winning the 1984 Belmont. But no Derby winner has rebounded off a Preakness loss to take the Belmont since Thunder Gulch in 1995. It’s about momentum and Exaggerator has finally pulled ahead of Nyquist. Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. Follow him on Twitter @Snide_Remarks

McGregor was fed up with the grueling promotional demands. “I didn’t just shut out and say no to everything,” he said. “I wanted to do reasonable media.”

1 Fighting Mayweather McGregor teased a fight against retired boxing great Floyd Mayweather. “Who doesn’t want to conquer both worlds? He’s getting old now,” he said. “He needs me, I don’t need him. Who else can he fight?”

Harper: Jersey up for auction not as advertised

An auction house says it is offering the jersey Bryce Harper wore during his memorable dugout fight with Jonathan Papelbon in September, but he says they’ve got the wrong shirt. “That’s my MVP jersey, and I have it,” Harper said Saturday. Biyombo, Raptors pick up intensity

YOUR LIFE

AFFORDABLE • CONVENIENT • FLEXIBLE

NBA PLAYOFFS DeMar DeRozan remembers the angry emotions Raptors teammate Bismack Biyombo once stirred in him as an opponent. “I hated him,” DeRozan said Sunday. The Cavaliers likely feel a little anger toward Biyombo after his pivotal performance Saturday, when he helped stop Cleveland’s 10-0 start to the playoffs in Toronto’s 99-84 victory in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals. Game 4 is tonight (8:30, ESPN) at Air Canada Centre. Biyombo hauled down a Raptors’ playoff-record 26 rebounds, blocked four shots, and scored six of his seven points in a quick fourth-quarter spurt that helped seal Toronto’s win. That wasn’t all. Biyombo was involved in a first-half skirmish that saw LeBron James take a tumble after catching an accidental elbow from his own teammate, Tristan Thompson. Late in the fourth, Biyombo drew a flagrant foul after he collared a driving James, sending the Cavs’ star sprawling again. DeRozan hasn’t forgotten what all that feels like. “I hated Biz,” Toronto’s All-Star

Now by far he’s one of my favorite teammates of all-time.” Raptors coach Dwane Casey understands Biyombo can be both a “nightmare” and a “nuisance” to play against, whether it’s the center’s habit of fingerwagging after blocks, or flexing his muscles after big dunks. To Biyombo, being a nuisance is no big deal. It’s the way it’s got to be. “Until you really get to know the real side of me, then you know who I am,” he said. “But on the floor I don’t have friends.” IAN HARRISON (AP)

NATIONALS 8, MARLINS 2 The Nationals are in first place in the NL East despite several key hitters struggling and their opening day starter having the worst ERA of any of their five starters. In Sunday’s 8-2 win over the Marlins, some of those sputtering players stepped up. Max Scherzer threw eight impressive innings, and Ben Revere and Anthony Rendon carried the offense. Home runs have doomed Scherzer this season, and he allowed one Sunday — a two-run shot to Justin Bour. Other than that pitch, however, the righthander was dominant, allowing just two earned runs. He struck out eight, did not walk a batter and lowered his ERA to 3.80. And Scherzer had plenty of cushion, in part because the Nationals’ leadoff man, Revere,

seemed to get his swing back. Last week, with his average hovering around .100, Revere said he felt like a character from the movie “Space Jam,” in which NBA stars have their powers sapped by aliens. On Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs and his first two stolen bases of the season. For Rendon, his struggles led to Dusty Baker dropping him from second to sixth in the

order before last week’s series with the Mets. On Sunday, he went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, driving in two runs on his first triple since August 2014. Since the lineup change, Rendon is 10for-20 and has raised his average from .227 to .259. The Nationals head home to play the Mets with a lead in the division, and plenty of room for improvement. SERIES PREVIEW

You again? Division-leading Nationals host Mets Less than a week after the Nationals (27-17) took two of three games from the Mets (25-18) in New York, the season series shifts to D.C. for a three-game set. Below are the probable pitching matchups, as the NL East-leading Nationals open a seven-game homestand. BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS) Gio Gonzalez (3-1, 1.86 ERA) vs. Bartolo Colon (3-3, 3.75)

Stephen Strasburg (7-0, 2.80) vs. Matt Harvey (3-6, 5.77)

Gonzalez has made good on his spring training promise to improve his command, issuing just 13 walks while striking out 40 in eight starts this season. He has a WHIP of 1.10 — which would be a career-best for a season — and his 1.86 ERA is third among NL starters behind only Jake Arrieta (1.29) and Clayton Kershaw (1.67). Gonzalez is 4-0 with 0.97 ERA in his past six starts against the Mets. Colon, who turns 43 on Tuesday, issued five walks and threw a seasonhigh 107 pitches in 4⅔ innings in a 7-1 loss to the Nationals last Wednesday.

Strasburg and the Nationals cruised to a 9-1 win at Citi Field on Thursday as the Nats sent Harvey to his earliest exit of the season after just 2 ⅔ innings. Both will take the mound again Tuesday. Strasburg will be looking to continue the best start to a season of his career. Harvey will be hoping to redeem himself after his worst outing of the season, in which he had more runs allowed (nine) than outs recorded (eight). The Nationals have won each of Strasburg’s past 13 starts and 20 of his last 22 outings overall.

Roark was solid in his last start, allowing six hits and one run in 6⅔ innings as the Nationals beat the Marlins 4-1 on Friday. In his career, Roark is 5-0 lifetime against the Mets with a 3.05 ERA. Matz has been New York’s most consistent starter this season, going 6-0 with a 1.35 ERA in his past six outings, with 42 strikeouts and six walks over that stretch. Matz recently missed a start with an elbow soreness, but was impressive in his return Friday with seven innings of two-run ball in a 3-2 win over Milwaukee.

Hooked on the Internet For a growing number of young Americans, the habit is destructive

HEALTH It is easy to scoff at the idea of Internet addiction, yet a growing number of parents and experts say addiction to screens is becoming a major problem for many young Americans, causing them to drop out of school, withdraw from their families and friends, and complain of deep anxieties in social settings. A recent 1,300-person survey by Common Sense Media, a parent advocacy group, found that 59 percent of parents think their teens are addicted to mobile devices. Meanwhile, 50 percent of teenagers feel the same way. Those who say they suffer from Internet addiction share many symptoms with other types of addicts, in terms of which chemicals are released into the brain, experts say. When not allowed to go online, addicts experience withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, depression or even physical shaking. They retreat into corners of the Internet where they can find quick success — a dominant ranking in a game or a well-liked Facebook post — that

they don’t have in the real world, experts say. In the United States, Internet addiction is not recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which sets the official standards for disorders in the United States. A draft definition covering video game addiction is included in an appendix for further research review, but there is no entry for general tech use. Without a definition of what Internet-related addiction is, it is hard to get insurance coverage to help pay for intensive Internet addiction rehabilitation programs, such as reSTART in Washington state. The program costs $25,000 for 45 days at the center, on par with high-end drug recovery clinics. It’s difficult to tease out from existing research what exactly an addiction to the Internet entails, said Nancy Petry, a doctor and professor at the University of Connecticut’s medical school. She was on the American Psychiatric Association’s committee that evaluated behavioral addictions for the DSM’s fifth edition. Is an addiction to online pornography, for example, an indication of an Internet addiction or of a sexual disorder? Or

The renowned theorist’s new series continues with its second episode. In “Why Are We Here?” Hawking challenges three everyday citizens to determine the reason why they exist. THE COST OF KICKING

could it be both? Other countries, however, do officially recognize some forms of Internet addiction as serious conditions. In South Korea, students are diagnosed and sent to government treatment centers. In China, militaristic government “boot camps” have treated millions of children. Japan, too, has tested an Internet “fasting camp” for young people. But researchers say the problem in America needs more study. “We’re largely flying

blind because we’ve done so little research about this,” said Jim Steyer, the executive director of Common Sense Media, whose study found that no one can agree on a definition — meaning that it’s hard to know how many of us in this perpetually plugged-in society have a serious problem. Delaney Ruston, a physician and filmmaker, explored a wide range of issues surrounding everyday tech use in her film “Screenagers.” Ruston thinks we should be careful about how we use the word “addiction” in casual conversation about tech use. Calling the kid who just won’t put her phone down during dinner an addict may do more harm than good. “We should be careful to stop using the word ‘addiction,’ so kids can have an internal sense of control,” she said. “They have to know that the device does not control them.” HAYLEY TSUKAYAMA

In the series finale, Rayna (Connie Britton) gets tough with Maddie (Lennon Stella); Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) handles a tragedy; and Scarlett and Gunnar (Clare Bowen, Sam Palladio) weigh breaking up their act.

Which of these men will win “The Bachelorette’s” heart? Our money’s on Santa Claus.

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

See other people: Which dating show will viewers court? American TV viewers, you have a rose in your hand. Which TV dating show will you give it to? ABC’s “The Bachelorette” is back for its 12th edition (9 p.m. tonight; 8 p.m. starting next Monday). Perky JoJo, recovered from the broken heart caused when Bachelor Ben spurned her on “The Bachelor,” is ready to find a guy who, as host Chris Harrison says, is as “good as Ben” (well, except for that time he dumped her). And now there’s “Coupled” (9 p.m. Tuesdays on Fox). Single men literally FALL

FROM THE SKY (via helicopter) to audition for 12 loveless women on a swank Anguilla resort. Fox says the gals have the power to pick or reject a dude. But if several women fall for the same man, he gets to choose two for dates at the “couples villa,” then decide whom he’ll be “coupled” with. Dear Fox: That is not giving power to the women. Which show gets the rose? It’s a dead heat when it comes to making viewers laugh at the absurdity of it all. Tonight on “The Bachelorette,” ABC says contestant Luke “makes a spectacular entrance on a unicorn.” Last week on “Coupled,” Brittany asked one of the single men to curl her as if she

were a barbell. I was leaning toward “Coupled” because of its progressive racial dynamics. While no person of color has ever been “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette,” the “Coupled” women reflect a multicultural America. But the ladies got on my nerves when they screeched and sent each other text messages about “hott” guys. In the end, I’m saving my rose for Season 2 of “UnReal,” the Lifetime scripted series (10 p.m. Mondays, starting June 6). Dark and bitter, “Unreal” depicts the craven off-camera manipulation of contestants on a “Bachelor”like show to boost drama (and ratings). This year, “Unreal” tackles the issue of race headon with a black bachelor — a quarterback with a killer smile who’s using the show to rehab his image after a scandal. I bet it’ll be really real. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’re very pleased with the way things are going in the main, but the behavior of another may be a portent of something odd that is brewing. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Just when you hit your stride, you may have to stop what you are doing because certain resources are running low.
