DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
LIFE IMITATES TV
Don’t get your hopes up. Your flea market crap is still worthless.
‘I’ve seen this on the insurance commercials. It’s covered, right?’
What a buy! A person not publicly identified spent the equivalent of $15 at a London flea market three decades ago on what was thought to be a piece of costume jewelry. The ring turned out to have a 26.27-carat white diamond. It’s expected to fetch more than $450,000 next month in an auction at Sotheby’s. The ring didn’t look impressive because 19th-century diamonds weren’t cut to show off their brilliance and clarity, Sotheby’s said. (AP)
James Bradley Poe of Winston-Salem, N.C., had to explain how his car crashed through a fence and ended up submerged in a pool at an apartment complex. He told police it rolled into the water at 5 a.m. Friday after he got out, thinking it was in park. “It just happened so fast; I couldn’t stop it,” he said. Poe said he left the car in the pool to go home to care for his son. Police cited him for leaving the scene and for lacking insurance. (AP)

of your crap — that this country belongs [to people like you]. … As a woman, I find your statements to be particularly odious; moreover, I find your presence in this gym to be unacceptable, your presence in this town to be unacceptable.” In comments to BuzzFeed, which was first to report the encounter and the termination of Spencer’s membership,
Spencer said he denied his identity because he wanted to avoid a confrontation. “I said no because I wanted her to go away,” he told the outlet. Spencer could not immediately be reached for comment Sunday. But he provided an image of his termination letter to BuzzFeed and told the outlet that he didn’t know why the gym revoked his membership. He described himself as a “wellbehaved member” who avoided controversy. For Fair, the incident triggered a swarm of crude, hateful and anti-Semitic social media postings and voicemails. Fair said she was contacted by a corporate representative for the gym last week, who informed her that Spencer’s membership had been terminated. The gym wanted her to come in to provide more information about the incident. “I’d do it again,” she said of the episode. “I told the fellow, ‘I think we can have a deal here: You don’t let any more Nazis in, and I won’t be making a scene.’ ” FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

local Suspect in killing of black student was part of racist online group COLLEGE PARK, MD. A prosecutor asked for patience Monday as authorities investigate the stabbing of a black Army officer, allegedly by a white University of Maryland student, in a possible hate crime on campus. The FBI is investigating the unprovoked stabbing of Richard Collins III as a possible hate crime. The suspect, Sean Urbanski, has belonged to a racist Facebook group. Police also said that he was intoxicated and is being tested for drugs.
Defense attorney William C. Brennan argued Monday that the 22-year-old should be allowed to live at home under conditions including GPS monitoring while his case goes forward. The judge declined, for now. Collins, 23, was stabbed early Saturday while visiting friends at the College Park campus. He had just been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and would have graduated today from Bowie State University, police said. Lt. Col. Joel Thomas, who runs the ROTC unit at Bowie State, described Collins as intelligent, athletic, personable and with all the makings of an outstanding

Pregnant teen not allowed at graduation ceremony
Officers in Gray case could face internal discipline
Wegmans plans to open first store in D.C. in 2022
A Maryland high school senior has been barred from participating in her school’s graduation ceremony because she is pregnant. Maddi Runkles, 18, was barred from the June 2 ceremony at the Heritage Academy in Hagerstown because she violated the school’s code of conduct by having premarital sex. After the pregnancy became known, officials at the small private Christian school suspended Runkles for two days. An anti-abortion organization said Runkles shouldn’t be punished for her pregnancy, but should be praised for keeping the baby. (AP)
The Baltimore Police Department has brought internal charges against five officers involved in the Freddie Gray case, and three of them face termination. The three who face firing are Officer Caesar Goodson, who was driving the van where Gray suffered fatal injuries, Lt. Brian Rice and Sgt. Officer William Porter is not facing any internal discipline.

Ruling to further delay Purple Line Judge says more study of Metro ridership and safety impacts needed MARYLAND A federal judge Monday ordered federal officials to further scrutinize the potential impact of Metro’s declining ridership on the future Purple Line, further delaying construction of the light-rail project in the Washington suburbs and jeopardizing its chances to secure critical federal funding. The ruling means major construction on the 16-mile line connecting Montgomery and Prince George’s counties remains on hold until a federal lawsuit filed by Purple Line opponents is resolved. Construction already has been delayed due to the lawsuit. The decision also greatly jeopa rd i zes the project’s chances at $900 million in federal construction grants and threatens a $5.6 billion public-
private partnership. Maryland officials have said they needed a favorable court ruling by June 1, or they would have to suspend much or all of the rail project’s planning and design work because state money would run out. The state would then have about 60 days before it would have to cancel the project and back out of the public-private partnership — a move that could cost the state more than $800 million in sunk costs and contract penalties, Maryland Transportation Secretary Pete K. Rahn said in a recent court filing. U.S. District Judge Richard J. Leon said Maryland and federal transit officials must redo the Purple Line’s ridership forecasts because they hadn’t taken “the requisite ‘hard look’ at the potential impact that [Metro’s] ridership and safety issues could have on the Purple Line project.” KATHERINE SHAVER AND SPENCER S. TURKEY Turkey’s Foreign Ministry lodged a formal protest Monday with the U.S. ambassador over “aggressive” actions by American security personnel during violence between Turkish guards and protesters when President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited Washington last week. The summoning of Ambassador John Bass sharply escalated a diplomatic rift between Turkey and the United States after the violence. Footage of the brawl that was widely circulated on social media prompted outrage in the U.S., calls for the prosecution of the Turkish guards and even the expulsion of Turkey’s ambassador to the U.S. American and Turkish officials have provided directly contrasting versions of what occurred. Local police said the Turkish guards savagely attacked a peaceful protest outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence. Footage of the melee showed what appeared to be Turkish security guards kicking and choking protesters as police struggled to contain the unrest. The footage also showed Erdogan watching the incident from a distance. But Turkish diplomats faulted

the D.C. police, saying they had failed to quell an “unpermitted” and “provocative” demonstration. In a statement Monday, Turkey’s Foreign Ministry criticized “the inability of U.S. authorities to take sufficient precautions”
and demanded that the U.S. conduct a “full investigation of this diplomatic incident.” In his meeting in Ankara with the Foreign Ministry, Bass said the security personnel’s behavior contradicted U.S. laws and protected speech and assembly rights, according to a senior U.S. State Department official, who requested anonymity. Pressure has been mounting on the Trump administration not to let the violence on U.S. soil go unpunished. Sens. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Patrick Leahy D-Vt., said in a letter released Monday that there could be “potential implications for assistance to Turkey” if the unseemly incident isn’t taken seriously by Ankara. New analysis of a fossilized jawbone discovered in 1944 in Greece reveals that the bone is about 7 million years old and has some humanlike characteristics, researchers say. In a pair of reports published Monday in the journal PLOS One, scientists say the fossil could represent the oldest known human ancestor. They further suggest that the fossil means our ancestors diverged from apes in Southern Europe — not Africa. Both are bold and highly disputed claims. The researchers claim that the Eastern Mediterranean could “just as likely” be the location of ape and human diversification as Africa. Other experts disagree, pointing to extensive fossil evidence that hominins (non-ape humans and their ancestors) originated in Africa and migrated north. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Court slaps redistricting in N.C. COURTS The Supreme Court ruled Monday that North Carolina’s Republican-controlled legislature unlawfully relied on race when drawing two of the state’s congressional districts. impact of minority voters, which is forbidden. On Monday the justices declared North Carolina had relied too heavily on race in their efforts to “reshuffle,” in the words of Justice Elena Kagan, voters
from one district to another. They were unanimous in rejecting one of the districts, and split 5-to-3 on the other. In the split decision, Justice Clarence Thomas joined the liberal justices. New Justice Neil Gorsuch was not on the court when the case was heard, and took no part in the decision. The charge from challengers was that North Carolina legislators had packed minority voters into a few districts to dilute their influence in other races. The state contended it was required to consider race in drawing the districts, but their overall effect was to preserve Republican control. ROBERT BARNES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Stop giving your babies fruit juice In new guidelines published Monday, the American Academy of Pediatrics advises that children younger than 1 year should avoid fruit juice, NPR reports. The group also advises children over 1 to drink it only sparingly, and instead, focus on eating fruit. (EXPRESS)
Sources: Trump asked officials to discredit probe POLITICS President Trump asked two of the nation’s top intelligence officials in March to help him push back against an FBI probe into possible coordination between his campaign and the Russian government, according to current and former officials. Trump made separate appeals to national intelligence director Daniel Coats and to National Security Agency Director Adm. Michael S. Rogers, urging them to publicly deny the existence of any evidence of collusion during the 2016 election. Coats and Rogers refused to comply with the requests, which they both deemed to be inappropriate, according to two current and two former officials. Trump’s conversation with Rogers was documented in an internal memo written by a senior NSA official, according to the officials. It is unclear if a similar memo was prepared by Coats’ office. Officials said such memos could be made available to the special counsel now overseeing the Russia investigation. An official said Trump’s goal was to “muddy the waters” about the scope of the probe at a time when Democrats were ramping up calls for a special counsel. “The White House does not confirm or deny unsubstantiated claims based on illegal leaks from anonymous individuals,” a White House spokesperson said. The NSA and a Coats spokesman declined to comment. ADAM ENTOUS AND ELLEN NAKASHIMA (TWP)

Upbeat visit to Israel Trump, Netanyahu vow to pursue peace with Palestinians, confront Iranian threat
Democrat says Flynn lied about foreign income
EVAN VUCCI (AP)
JERUSALEM President Trump solemnly placed a note in the ancient stones of Jerusalem’s Western Wall on Monday, sending a signal of solidarity to an ally he is pushing to work harder toward peace with the Palestinians. But his historic gesture — and his enthusiastic embrace of Israel’s leader — were shadowed by reminders of Trump’s tumult back in Washington. In this second stop on his first foreign trip, Trump unexpectedly offered a new defense of his disclosure of classified information to Russian diplomats in a recent Oval Office meeting. Standing alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he argued that he never mentioned Israel, the source of the classified intelligence according to various officials — something he has not been accused of doing. “I never mentioned the word or the name Israel,” he told reporters. “So you have another story wrong.” Netanyahu played down the disclosure, saying that U.S.Israeli intelligence cooperation is “terrific” while attempting to dismiss concerns that the incident violated a confidentiality agreement. The moment was an abrupt interruption of an otherwise warm and smooth welcome for Trump to the Holy Land. After years of butting heads with Trump’s predecessor, Netanyahu celebrated a new American president’s arrival as a moment of hope in the stalled peace talks between Israel and Palestinians. Trump, arriving from Saudi Arabia, declared he saw the possibility of a new

alignment of Muslim nations and Israel against a shared foe — Iran. “There is a growing realization among your Arab neighbors that they have common cause with you in the threat posed by Iran,” he said, at a welcome meeting with President Reuven Rivlin. The White House has said it doesn’t expect any sort of breakthrough on the peace process on this trip. But Trump’s unconventional approach to diplomacy has raised hopes that he may be well positioned to jump-start talks bogged down by entrenched interests and ancient enmity. Welcoming Trump, Netanyahu said, “I also look forward to working closely with you to advance peace in our region, because you have noted so succinctly that common dangers are turning former enemies into partners.” “It won’t be simple,” Netanyahu said. “But for the first time in many years — and, Mr. President, for the first time in my lifetime — I see a real hope
The latest Israeli police said a Palestinian attacker was fatally shot after he tried to stab officers near Jerusalem as President Trump visited the city on Monday. Sepulchre, which by Christian tradition is where Jesus was crucified and the location of his tomb. Wearing a black skullcap, he became the first sitting president to visit the Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City, the most holy site at which Jews can pray. Trump was joined by first lady Melania Trump, his son-in-law Jared Kushner and daughter Ivanka Trump. The visit raised questions about whether the U.S. would indicate the site is Israeli territory. The U.S. has never recognized Israeli sovereignty over parts of the Old City seized in the 1967 war. The White House struggled to answer the question. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley declared the site part of Israel, while Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Monday dodged. “The wall is part of Jerusalem,” he said, declaring only an undeniable fact accepted by all sides. Trump never commented. JONATHAN LEMIRE AND JULIE PACE (AP)
POLITICS The top Democrat on the House Oversight committee said documents he has reviewed suggest that former national security adviser Michael Flynn, above, lied to federal security clearance investigators about the source of payments Flynn received from a Russian statesponsored television network. Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., said Flynn told the investigators during an early 2016 security clearance review that a trip to Moscow was “funded by U.S. companies.” Cummings said the actual source of the funds was “the Russian media propaganda arm, RT.” Cummings made the statements in a letter to Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, the chairman of the House Oversight committee. Cummings’ letter came the same day Flynn declined to provide documents to the Senate Intelligence committee, citing his Fifth Amendment protection from self-incrimination. In a letter to the committee, Flynn’s attorneys justified the decision by citing an “escalating public frenzy against him” and saying the Justice Department’s recent appointment of a special counsel has created a legally dangerous environment for him to cooperate with the panel’s investigation. The top two members of the Senate Intelligence committee say they will “vigorously pursue” the testimony of Flynn. (AP)

nation+world POLITICS A transgender “bathroom bill” reminiscent of one in North Carolina that caused a national uproar now appears to be on a fast-track to becoming law in Texas, though it may only apply to public schools. A broader proposal mandating that virtually all transgender people in the country’s secondlargest state use public restrooms according to the gender on their birth certificates sailed through the Texas Senate months ago. A similar measure had stalled in the House, but supporters late Sunday night used an amendment to tack the bathroom restrictions onto an otherwise

unrelated bill covering school emergency operation plans. Republican Rep. Chris Paddie authored the hotly debated language, saying it had “absolutely no intent” to discriminate. Under it, transgender students at public and charter schools would not be permitted to use the bathroom of their choice, but could be directed to separate, singleoccupancy restrooms. “It’s absolutely about child safety,” said Paddie, from the East Texas town of Marshall. “This amendment is the bathroom bill and the bathroom bill is an attack on transgender people,” said Rep. Joe Moody, an El Paso Democrat. “Some people
don’t want to admit that because they are ashamed, and this is shameful.” Republican Gov. Greg Abbott has said he wants to sign a bathroom bill into law. Supporters described limiting the scope to schools as a “middle ground” and hinted that it could soften the kinds of costly boycotts that hit North Carolina after it approved its bathroom bill last year. The NCAA pulled sporting events and the state faced losing billions of dollars in related economic fallout, though some opposition has quieted since North Carolina lawmakers voted in March for a partial repeal. Trump recruits a legal team to represent him POLITICS President Trump is moving rapidly to assemble a team of outside counselors to help navigate the investigations into his campaign and Russian interference in last year’s election. In recent days, he and his advisers have spoken with several prominent attorneys. By Monday, a list of finalists for the legal team had emerged, according to four people briefed on the discussions. The list of finalists remains somewhat fluid, but four attorneys who have spoken to the White House and are widely seen as the finalists are Marc E. Kasowitz; Robert J. Giuffra Jr.; Reid H. Weingarten; and Theodore B. Olson, above, the sources said. Kasowitz is expected to take a leading role. He has represented Trump in numerous cases. Giuffra, Olson and Weingarten have already spoken with senior administration officials about the team, said a person familiar with the process. Olson, a former U.S. Solicitor General, rose to prominence in 2000 when he argued the Supreme Court election case that delivered electoral victory to George W. Bush. Olson later worked to successfully overturn the 2008 California ballot measure outlawing same-sex marriage. The outside legal team would be separate from the White House Counsel’s Office. Bryce Harper, who is hitting .349 after a disappointing 2016 season, still has plenty of fire, but he says he controls it now.
THREE POINTERS
Tweaking NFL rules
Harper finds his sweet spot
With NFL owners gathering in Chicago for their spring meeting, here is a look at some rule changes they are expected to consider today. MARK MASKE (TWP)
3 Length of overtime The competition committee has proposed cutting OT from 15 minutes to 10 in the name of player safety. This is partly driven by the short turnaround before Thursday games. Last season, two games ended in ties after 15-minute overtimes.
The Nats’ star is enjoying a new, calmer approach that is paying off at the plate Mike Rizzo said Harper denied. His agent, Scott Boras, sidesteps the topic but says Harper is fully healthy now. “He is firing on all cylinders,” Boras said after Harper signed a 2018 contract for $21.625 million, most ever for an arbitrationeligible player. Even after a disappointing 2016 season (.243, 24 homers, 86 RBIs, a WAR of 1.6), Harper did not reconstruct. He just reset. “I’ve known Bryce since his first time in pro ball, and all the talent’s there, we just have to keep his head right,” hitting coach Rick Schu said. “It’s a tough business we’re in. Just try to keep him loose, get him to relax, and I think this year he’s doing that. He’s in a good place.” Manager Dusty Baker finds his fiery star “more settled” at the plate and in general. He cited Harper’s marriage in December to longtime love Kayla Varner. “These things settle a person,” Baker said. “You start to get into part of life where things are more regimented. You’ve been in the game longer. You’re married. Here come kids. He’s an adult now.” Harper agrees that in his

NATIONALS Bryce Harper’s psyche is under constant analysis these days, his words parsed for hidden meaning: Will he stay with the Nationals after next season? How much money does he want? Has he grown up? Did he need to? Is he happy here? Harper, just 24, is not an easy read. But one thing is clear: He is hitting like a superstar again. His average is .349, eighthhighest in baseball entering Monday’s off day. His 1.136 OPS was third-highest. He is hitting to the opposite field more than ever, something he said he was always told would help him hit .300, although sometimes at the cost of some power. He has power to spare. Of the fly balls he is hitting, a greater percentage are becoming home runs than ever before. He was tied for the fourth-most home runs in baseball with 13. Any analysis of where Harper is or is going must begin with where he was at this time last year, reeling after the Cubs would not stop walking him, his trademark swagger lessened. Rumors swirled that he was hurt last season, rumors GM

sixth major-league season he has found a valuable equilibrium. “I think when you’re 19, 20, 21, you’re in the show, you want to do everything possible to help your team win. You can’t always do that,” he said. “I didn’t understand it back then, [that] I really need to not get so upset. Now you see the

big picture of a long season — and how long the season can be if you are struggling and upset.” Harper still snaps at umpires and throws his helmet occasionally. Sometimes he makes the difficult throw instead of the smart one. But the edges are smoother on his aggressive, don’t-ask-forpermission personality. “Sometimes you’re going to pop up to right and you should have hit it off the scoreboard and you’re going to slam your helmet down,” Harper said. “But you try to control your emotions the best you can and not really worry about it. “I’ve got a great dog waiting for me at home, and even when I go 0-for-4, he’s wagging his tail telling me how much he loves me.”
An idea likely to pass would let each team activate two players from injured reserve each season instead of one. Making the roster more flexible could enhance player safety.
1 An idea to celebrate The league is expected to advise officials to give players more leeway in celebrations, provided that they are done quickly and are not deemed offensive.

Allen coy on possible GM hire He sidesteps questions on how much power new executive will have
MATT McCLAIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
REDSKINS Redskins President Bruce Allen said Monday that he had met with more than a dozen candidates, as well as “everybody on the inside,” regarding the team’s top personnel job and was close to a decision. But he sidestepped direct questions about whether the person in that job would have the title of general manager and carry final responsibility for the roster. “We’re getting close to having a final plan,” Allen said at the team’s charity golf tournament at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington. “It has been a good period. around the league.” The Redskins, who begin offseason practices today, have been without a general manager since firing Scot McCloughan on March 9, barely two years into his four-year contract. When hired, McCloughan had been handed what was
characterized as total control over the roster. It wasn’t long before internal disagreements and jealousies eroded the working relationship, leading in part to McCloughan’s ouster. Allen also said contract talks with the agent for quarterback Kirk Cousins were ongoing, but

noted that the NFL’s July 15 deadline for completing a new deal would be the driving factor. For now, Cousins is signed to a one-year contract under the franchise tag. He played under the same tag last season. “We’d like to get a long-term deal, and I think he should want to get a long-term deal,” Allen said. Coach Jay Gruden also attended the golf outing. He said he expects a better defense in his fourth season. In 2016, the club was 28th in total defense and 19th in points allowed. He said he knows fans don’t want to wait for the defense — or the team overall — to improve. “I don’t think patience is in the dictionary here in the D.C.,” Gruden said. “I think we have to be good now.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

LeBron keeps low profile after vanishing act NBA PLAYOFFS LeBron James was nowhere to be seen Monday, staying behind the scenes, keeping a low profile. Just as he did in Game 3. James did not address the media Monday, hours after one of the worst postseason games of his career, an 11-point, six-turnover head-scratcher in a 111-108 loss to the Celtics that — for now — has made the Eastern Conference finals interesting. James and the Cavaliers lead the series 2-1 entering tonight’s game in Cleveland (8:30, TNT). On Sunday night, James made numerous mistakes and inexplicably passed up shots. In the fourth quarter, he shot just three times and didn’t attempt a free throw. He went scoreless in the final 16 minutes. Afterward, James accepted responsibility, saying simply, “I didn’t have it.” Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue defended him, saying, “For a guy who played great for five straight months, he’s got to have a bad game sooner or later.” If James lacked panache Sunday night, the Celtics did not — at least in the second half. They stormed back from 16 points down at intermission and won when Avery Bradley’s 3-pointer danced on the rim before falling with a tenth of a second left. Boston won despite being without star guard Isaiah Thomas, who was shut down for the rest of the playoffs with a hip injury after the Celtics lost Game 2 by 44 points. TOM WITHERS (AP)

JUST OPENED ENED
Snacks to keep stashed
You eat a big breakfast and even a satisfying lunch, but it never fails that by 3 p.m. you’re famished. Though the office vending
machine, with all of its not-so-healthy options, may be good for a quick fix, a better long-term solution would be to stash away a few healthy, filling snacks at your desk. But which ones? Experts shared some of their top picks. DANIELLE DOUGLAS-GABRIEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Get your squash on Plant-based chips
Dark chocolate
Dried fruit
This is a great alternative to your garden-variety fried chips. Lisa M. Davis, chief nutrition officer of Terra’s Kitchen healthy food delivery service, recommends Siete’s grain-free tortilla chips. They are made with cassava flour, avocado oil, ground chia seeds and other natural ingredients. Jica Chips, made from the root vegetable jicama, are another plant-based snack that is high in fiber and vitamin C, while Dang coconut chips provide as much fiber as an apple but with less sugar.
If you have a sweet tooth, dark chocolate is the way to satisfy a midday craving. Studies have shown it can decrease blood pressure and reduce the risk of death from heart attacks. “Dark chocolate contains less added sugar than milk [chocolate] and it’s also higher in antioxidants, thanks to the cocoa,” says Nichola Whitehead, a registered dietitian and food blogger. Whitehead is all for combining dark chocolate with cashews for a sweet and savory treat filled with protein.
Eating dried apricots with almonds offers a good mix of fiber and healthy unsaturated fats, Whitehead says. But be mindful of just how much you eat. About 23 pieces of almonds have around 163 calories, and six pieces of dried apricots have 100 calories, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department. You can also opt for freeze-dried fruit packs by Crispy Green. There are no preservatives or added sugar, and all fruits have 55 or fewer calories per serving.
Hummus and carrots
Squeeze pouches
Red bell peppers
Like chips and salsa, carrots and hummus are a perfect match. “Hummus is made from chickpeas, which are a great source of both fiber and protein to keep us fuller for longer, while carrots are not only rich in fiber but vitamin A, too, which is essential for healthy vision,” says Whitehead. You can pack a zip-top bag full of baby carrots with your lunch, and if you have access to a refrigerator at work, keep a small container of hummus stored for daily use.
There are all sorts of squeeze packs for adults that are filled with nutritious fruit and vegetable purees. Davis is a fan of Mamma Chia Squeeze Vitality Snack, a blend of chia seeds, fruits and veggies that comes in flavors such as blackberry bliss and cherry beet. “They are gluten-free and vegan,” she adds. The Happy Squeeze line is an option for parents and kids alike, with flavors such as kale and mango. The snacks have 100 or fewer calories and contain a half-cup of fruit.
This low-calorie option is chock full of fiber, potassium and vitamins A and C. Red bell peppers are also pretty portable once you slice them up and put them into a resealable bag, but it’s best to keep this office snack refrigerated. “I love starting people off with red bell peppers because they’re very sweet,” says Ilana Muhlstein, a registered dietitian and nutritionist. “Not only do red bell peppers have more vitamin C than oranges, they are also low in sugar.”
Tenleytown’s Sport&Health hosts free obstacle course group training at noon Thursday
Anthony Lanier, the brains behind Squash on Fire, a membershipfree facility that opened in D.C.’s West End (2233 M St. NW) on Saturday, says squash is a hell of a workout. “You can burn up to 1,000 calories in a 45-minute session,” he says. The three-floor facility screams Topgolf — but for squash. It boasts eight courts, including two all-glass “showcase courts” equipped to host tournaments, a full-service bar and restaurant, locker rooms and a green patio. Single lessons and clinics range from $39 to $199, depending on the number of players and the coach. Regular play starts at $20 per match. Players can book sessions through squashonfire.com or the app and can record sessions for an extra fee. ZAINAB MUDALLAL (EXPRESS)

Q. My husband and I have been growing apart for a couple of years, but these past several months it’s like we are living separate lives. I have wanted to do activist things in response to the current administration, and I feel fired up in a way I haven’t in a long time. Though he agrees with me politically on the surface, his day-to-day life hasn’t changed. He sees politics as fickle and figures that things will take care of themselves on their own. Not only is this diverging us in our activities but I am losing respect for him, since he does not seem to care about these things. Is there hope for us? We don’t have children and I wonder if I should just carve out my own path. DRIFTING APART Can you serve your “own path” within the marriage, and would that be good enough? It takes honest exploration to figure that out. You married him for a reason — one that’s hopefully not a Pinterest-worthy engagement shoot — and so, presumably, there’s true potential for long-term compatibility. Marriage is not about freezing each other in time, but rather about committing to grow and change and break
bones and lose hair and find new interests — side by side. I understand the current political climate and the need for activism is not just like taking up CrossFit. But be careful of over-endowing it with meaning that he can’t get as fired up: After all, he agrees with you, but something in his temperament may make him not an activist type. And might that something be interwoven with other qualities that made you fall for him in the first place?
group of boys. We’re great friends at school and social events, but I never get invited to anything outside of school. It bothers me and it makes things a bit awkward, but I don’t want to invite myself or broach the subject with them. I’m not in a romantic relationship with any of them, as I am openly gay. I just don’t want to be excluded because I shave my legs instead of my face. Is there any way for me to bridge the gender gap and be included like everyone else? BEGRUDGING MY GENDER I understand this feels bad. But inertia is a powerful thing — the more they get used to this pattern, the more it would take for them to invite you. And it’s the very same initiative and effort that you are balking at putting forth. But why not jump over that hurdle yourself, instead of wasting time wishing that they would? Plan a group gathering or choose one person in the group that you particularly want to hang with — what matters is that you get the ball rolling. And if they seem incapable of accepting a woman into their non-school midst, you might choose the guy you trust the most to have a real and private conversation with about what’s going on. Ultimately, you won’t know if you can get this train on a different track unless you attempt to be the conductor. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Hollywood is only skin-deep PERSPECTIVE Vail Reese is the world expert on movie characters’ skin conditions. The San Francisco dermatologist can tell you anything you want to know about scars, birthmarks, tattoos, Jon Hamm’s vitiligo and the Austin Powers adversary Fat Bastard’s extra nipple. For two decades, Reese’s website, Skinema, has chronicled these abnormalities, which, he argues, too often appear on villains. Reese sees how such conventions affect his own patients. “It’s not just, ‘Am I going to look pretty?’ ” he says. “It’s, ‘Are people going to judge me?’ ” His work is a peek into how Hollywood perpetuates a notion that looks correlate with character. When many in show business are fighting for greater diversity and against stereotypes of all kinds, should that fight include types of bodies and faces? “It’s overdue,” says Nancy Etcoff, an assistant clinical professor at Harvard Medical School who wrote the 1999 book “Survival of the Prettiest.” A recent study in JAMA Dermatology found that six of the American Film Institute’s top-10 villains of all time have dermatologic issues, from Hannibal Lecter’s androgenic alopecia (hair loss) to the Wicked Witch
COLUMBIA PICTURES; WARNER BROS.; UNIVERSAL PICTURES; WALT DISNEY PICTURES
Why do movies and TV still assess good and evil based on looks?
In films like “Spectre,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Silence of the Lambs” and “Star Wars,” abnormalities equate to evil.
of the West’s verruca vulgaris (wart). “Unfairly targeting dermatologic minorities may contribute to a tendency toward prejudice,” the study says. Reese does acknowledge improvements. Marvel hero Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) has severe scarring under his mask, for instance. But still, stereotypes persist. Christoph Waltz as Blofeld in the James Bond film “Spectre” and Adam Driver as Kylo Ren in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” get scars — each perpetuating conditions from villains earlier in the series (unhelmeted Darth Vader and the earlier Blofeld, a model for Dr. Evil in “Austin Powers”). In Beauty and the Beast” — even “Beauty
leaving the premise aside — Reese spotted a scar on one of the wolves chasing Belle. The trope finds its way into comedy, where political cartoons exaggerate a nose, chin or mouth to imply someone is silly or sinister. And late-night comedians poke fun of their targets’ looks all the time. As Seth Meyers said recently, “Pollen, thanks to you, I am so stuffed up, my face feels the way Steve Bannon’s face looks.” President Trump’s skin tone has also prompted many variations on the insult “Cheeto.” But Trump reportedly takes medication for rosacea, a condition marked by redness that affects 16 million Americans. Such jokes aren’t just targeted at
politicians — they imply a broader attitude about what faces mean. Shouldn’t we avoid spreading the stigma of any perceived appearance quirk, regardless of how detestable that person may be? Hollywood activism on this issue could be impractical, and it might appear ridiculous, even dangerous, to try to relate it to gender and race, which are deeper aspects of identity. Still, Etcoff argues, all types of diversity on screen should be part of the same fight: “There are a lot of people who are interesting and fun and moving to look at who are not there. All people in some ways should be visible.” ZACHARY PINCUS-ROTH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

With 4 projects, Kidman reigns over Cannes FILM Unveiling a new chapter in her already considerable career, Nicole Kidman has brought four projects to Cannes this year, making her almost ubiquitous at the French Riviera festival. “I’m at that place in my life where I’m trying to pretend I’m 21 and starting my career,” Kidman, 49, told reporters at the festival on Monday. “I want to try new things and support the filmmakers I believe in.” Kidman’s projects at Cannes include Yorgos Lanthimos’ dark family comedy “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” which premiered Monday. On Sunday, the actress’s ”How to Talk to Girls at Parties,” a 1970s punk-alien romantic romp by John Cameron Mitchell, debuted. Still to come is Sofia Coppola’s “The Beguiled,” a female-perspective remake of the 1971 film, and the second season of Jane Campion’s series “Top of the Lake.” Kidman’s omnipresence at the festival, along with her red carpet poise, has earned her the nickname “Queen of Cannes.” She grants that the films — which follow her turn on the HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and her Oscarnominated role in “Lion” — are all the result of her resolution to stay open to challenging material. “I still have that passion, at this age,” Kidman said, “for acting and cinema and storytelling and pushing boundaries and moving out of my comfort zone to try things with an abandon.” JAKE COYLE (AP)

“That’s a swat if I’ve ever seen one! I’ve done it to my husband a million times.” DARLENE STELLY, a commenter at huffingtonpost.com, weighing in on whether or not Melania Trump swatted the president’s hand away in Israel. Video footage seems to show the first lady rejecting her husband’s grab for her hand, and social media went wild trying to decipher the gesture.
“Has anyone ever rooted for a sinkhole before?” @CHUCKYOUTWO, tweeting about reports that a sinkhole
has formed near President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. Palm Beach officials shared in a traffic alert on Monday that a 4-by-4-foot sinkhole had formed on the road in front of Mar-a-Lago. Crews were looking into the situation. Sinkholes are common in Florida, but this particular one inspired some jokes. “Even the ground can’t keep from sinking under Trump’s gigantic ego,” @RichardPMacLean tweeted.
“This deer really has terrible luck ‘cause you couldn’t pick a store with customers more ready to ... tackle a deer than Walmart.” @HERBMCDERB, reacting to this photo
of a deer being held down in a Wal-Mart in Wadena, Minn. USA Today reported that the deer got into the store and a customer quickly grabbed it and held it so it wouldn’t be spooked.
“They’re not pets. I’m glad the girl is safe, but the adults deserve every bit of scolding that’s coming their way.” @ANITACREAMER, tweeting about a viral video of a girl getting dragged into the water by a sea lion near Vancouver, Canada, after the girl and her family were feeding the animal. In the video, which was posted Saturday, a man on the dock jumps in to save the girl.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Someone you trust has a good deal to say about a current piece of work. Just remember it’s not finished until everyone agrees it is. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You may have to disqualify yourself from something you were looking forward to, because you forgot to take one small step. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Friends and relatives are all concerned about the same sudden event. You can put them at ease by demonstrating your comfort with new circumstances. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may be working more slowly than usual, but there’s nothing wrong with checking that no errors have been made.
MONDAY’S SOLUTION
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You will
have a hard time concealing your mood from those who know you. Fortunately, they understand the cause this time around.
MONDAY’S SOLUTION
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You may have to wait longer than usual for a message telling you the coast is clear. Once it’s in your hand, get moving. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Issues of strategy and tactics will vie for your attention. You must be willing to consider an option no one else has.
FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Something will happen that requires a response from you as soon as possible — but be sure your response is proportional. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You can do someone a favor by steering clear of his or her business. You will be invited back into the fold soon enough.

Former “Today” co-host Billy Bush said in a Hollywood Reporter interview that he’s gone through “a lot of soul searching” in the seven months since a leaked “Access Hollywood” video got him fired from his NBC job. So he’s saying he just wants to TALK to people? Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said his quest this year to visit every state he hadn’t before is about building relationships, not politics. The billionaire wrote in a Facebook post that some users asked if the trip means he’s running for public office. Zuckerberg said he’s not. Instead, he said the visits around the country are in order “to get a broader perspective.” (AP)
