‘Cat saves owners from fire’ would be a misleading headline

‘Eat dessert just once a week’ seems pretty pathetic now, eh?

A Las Vegas-area couple is crediting their cat with alerting them to a fire in their home. A fire broke out at a home in the Summerlin community around 2 a.m. Sunday. The husband and wife told fire officials they were asleep when they got woken up by the cat scratching kitchen cabinets. The husband says he went to check on the cat and found a fire in the garage. Firefighters say no injuries were reported. (AP)

A Spanish priest says he has given up hope that authorities in his parish will fix the potholes in the roads, so he has asked for divine intervention. Luis Roldan Patino celebrated Mass on a pitted road Sunday and splashed holy water to bless it. Each pothole is now marked with a wooden cross on the roadside so drivers know to slow down. Roldan Patino said divine intervention is “going to be the only way” the road gets fixed. (AP)

A Massachusetts man who made a resolution on Jan. 1, 1989, to run every day is still going strong 27 years later. Saugus resident Lenworth “Kip” Williamson recently ran for the 10,000th consecutive day. The 57-year-old said he remembers reading at the time that if you can do something for 21 days, it becomes a habit. Williamson only runs outside, regardless of the weather, and puts in at least 3 miles a day. (AP)

It’s hard to spell g-o-o-d-b-y-e NATIONAL HARBOR Like an ex-jock who wants to stay involved in his sport, Jacob Williamson has taken on many roles in the two years since his memorable run to the finals at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. He’s been a coach to younger spellers, an official at local bees, a scout who identifies promising young talent and, at times, a vocal critic of Scripps. “I’m the kind of person who can just sit down in front of my computer for three hours and watch a live stream of a spelling bee that I know nobody in,” said Jacob, who’s now 17. “I did that several times this year. I can’t pin down a reason why I can do that and not just get bored.” Not all former spellers can match Jacob’s level of devotion. But the spelling bee has a remarkable pull over those who’ve made it to the national stage. Year after year, they keep coming back. Dozens of former spellers will be in the live audience when the preliminary rounds of the bee begin Wednesday. Others take on

official roles in the competition. The most famous ex-spellers are Jacques Bailly, the pronouncer and public face of the bee; and Paige Kimble, the bee’s executive director. They won in backto-back years: Bailly in 1980, Kimble in 1981. Corrie Loeffler, a three-time national bee participant, is also part of Scripps’ fulltime bee staff, and her brother, ex-speller Paul Loeffler, does commentary for ESPN’s telecast. Former spellers can provide unmatched insight about the

competition and the spellers. Jacob uses his connections in the spelling world to scout the country for promising talent. He’s ranked the top 122 competitors at this year’s bee on a spreadsheet. “I do a lot of research about the different spellers,” Jacob said. “I definitely figure out which ones are good even before I’ve ever seen them spell.” He also was among those pressuring Scripps to make changes after the previous two bees ended in a tie. This year, the bee will use harder words at the end, a change Jacob applauded. “I really care about the future of the bee,” Jacob said. “I think the past few years, it’s been going on a downward trend.” Spellers pour their heart and soul into the bee — some for as many as five or six years. But once they reach ninth grade or turn 16, it’s over, and it can leave a void. “It’s certainly very abrupt. There’s also a feeling of relief, but that’s rather transitory,” said Rob Palmisano, a student at Duke who’ll be part of this year’s college crew. “You’re in this period of deep reflection. Did I study enough? Did I get the most out of this that I wanted to get out of it?” BEN NUCKOLS (AP)

Plebes cap off first year at the academy The U.S. Naval Academy’s plebe class has capped the Herndon Monument. About 1,000 first-year students took part in this annual tradition Monday. Chris Bianchi capped the 21-foot obelisk, slathered with vegetable shortening, with a midshipmen’s hat. It was done in 1 hour, 12 minutes and 30 seconds. Students formed a human pyramid to help classmates climb the monument. They removed the hat from the top and replaced it with a midshipmen’s hat, marking the end of the plebe year. The tradition dates back to the 1940s. (AP)

in disciplinary action. About a dozen protesters gathered outside the courthouse as the verdict was read, but they were far outnumbered by members of the media. Mayor Stephanie RawlingsBlake noted the departmental review and pleaded for calm. “We once again ask the citizens to be patient and to allow the entire process to come to a conclusion,” she said. Gray’s family settled with the city for $6.4 million in September. An attorney for the family, Billy Murphy, said they respected the verdict, and he commended the judge for resisting “enormous pressure” and showing “tremendous courage in ruling against public opinion.”

Federal prosecutors are investigating campaign contributions to Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and what they consider to be suspicious personal finances, as part of a public integrity probe that has lasted for more than a year, according to two officials familiar with the inquiry. Justice Department officials would not confirm or deny the investigation. Many details, including what prompted it, remain unclear, and one official said there is skepticism among prosecutors about whether it will lead to charges. That official said investigators have been scrutinizing McAuliffe’s finances — including personal bank records, tax returns and public disclosure forms that date back many years — and are interested in foreign sources of income.

BALTIMORE A Baltimore officer was acquitted of assault and other charges Monday in the April 2015 arrest of Freddie Gray, dealing prosecutors a second straight blow in their bid to hold police accountable for the black man’s death from spinal injuries suffered in the back of a police van. The judge who decided Officer Edward Nero’s fate in the nonjury trial concluded that Nero played little role in the arrest and wasn’t responsible for the failure by police to buckle Gray in. Upon hearing the verdict, Nero hugged his attorney and appeared to wipe away a tear. Nero, who is white, was the second of six officers charged in the racially combustible case to stand trial. The manslaughter case against Officer William Porter ended in a mistrial in December when the jury deadlocked. Prosecutors plan to retry him at some point. The next case to go trial is that of the van driver, who faces the most serious charge of all, second-degree murder. His case is set for June 6. Gray died a week after his neck was broken during a jolting ride in the van while he was handcuffed and shackled but not

Nero, 30, waived his right to a jury trial, choosing to argue his case before Circuit Judge Barry Williams. “The state’s theory has been one of recklessness and negligence,” the judge said. “There has been no evidence that the defendant intended for a crime to occur.” The assault charge carried up to 10 years in prison. Nero was also found not guilty of reckless endangerment and misconduct. Nero remains on desk duty and still faces a departmental investigation that could result

The number of Zika prevention kits Virginia officials are racing to distribute to pregnant women in the state as the summer mosquito season fast approaches. The kits, which will be made available through health care providers, include a small bottle of mosquito repellent, educational materials and condoms. That’s because the disease can be spread sexually as well as by bites from the mosquitoes that carry the virus. Virginia’s anti-Zika efforts are currently being funded through what’s left of a federal Ebola grant, which amounts to about $700,000. (AP)

GOP sues McAuliffe to block felon voting bill Virginia Republicans asked state’s highest court Monday to block more than 200,000 felons from voting in November, arguing that Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe abused his power by restoring the voting rights of thousands of convicts who have completed their sentences. In a lawsuit GOP leaders filed in the Virginia Supreme Court, they say McAuliffe violated the separation of powers by effectively suspending the state’s ban on voting by felons. They say McAuliffe is ignoring decades of practice, which has made clear that governors can restore voting rights only on a case-by-case basis. (AP) PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY

Plan your holiday escape

Memorial Day weekend traditionally kicks off the summer travel season. For a Memorial Day getaway, you do not want to leave between 5 and 6 p.m. Wednesday or Thursday. Researchers with the D.C. region’s Transportation Planning Board found the slowest travel speeds of the week at those times. Here’s a handy guide on how to avoid some of those traffic headaches this weekend. And remember, no matter your mode of travel this summer, plan ahead and pack your patience. Classic route: Interstate 95 to I-295, across the Delaware Memorial Bridge to the New Jersey Turnpike to northern New Jersey approaches to New York (about 227 miles).

Classic route: I-270 to I-70 West to I-68 West to Exit 14A at Keysers Ridge, Md., then follow Route 219 South (about 180 miles).

Classic route: Route 50 East to Ocean City (about 150 miles).

Classic route: I-95 South, to I-295 South, to I-64 East, to I-664 South, then I-64 to Exit 292 for Chesapeake Expressway/I-464/ Route 17. Keep left to continue to the Chesapeake Expressway (Route 168) and take Nags Head/Great Bridge Exit 291B to Routes 168 and 158 and the Outer Banks (about 270 miles).

Alternatives: Consider I-95 to I-695, just before Baltimore, to I-83 to York, Pa., and Harrisburg, Pa., then I-81 to I-78. Options include staying on I-78 across New Jersey toward New York or taking a more northerly course — following Route 22 just before Allentown, Pa., to Route 33 to I-80 across the top of New Jersey. Or take Route 50 across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (cash toll $4 paid eastbound), follow Route 301 to Route 896 (Churchtown/Boyds Corner roads) to Route 1 (toll) or Route 13. From there, drivers can reach I-295 and the Delaware Memorial Bridge, which connects with the New Jersey Turnpike. Travel tips: North of Baltimore on I-95, the I-95 Express Toll Lanes are open for eight miles in the middle of the interstate.

Alternatives: Between Frederick and Route 219, try portions of Route 144 and Alternate 40, which weave along with the interstates. Much of that route is the Historic National Road. Take it to enjoy a different drive to Western Maryland rather than to save time. Maryland travel maps, including those of road projects and scenic byways, are available at www.marylandroads.com. Travel tips: Maryland’s major roads — including I-270, I-70 and Routes 15 and 40 — pass through a bottleneck at Frederick. Try to avoid starting your trip between 1 and 8 p.m. Fridays. One traveler suggested bypassing the area by following Route 7 west past Leesburg and linking up around Winchester with Route 522, which eventually connects with I-70.

Alternatives: They aren’t making any new highways out on the Eastern Shore. But around Wye Mills, Route 404 branches east from Route 50 and heads for Rehoboth Beach on the Delaware shore. This has the advantage of bypassing potential slowdowns in Easton, Cambridge and Salisbury, but the route is narrow and crowded in sections. Parts are being rebuilt in a widening project. Along the Route 50 corridor, there are some short breaks, including Route 662 at Wye Mills. Approaching the shore, Route 90 (Ocean City Expressway) provides an alternative way into the city, at 62nd Street. Travel tips: The best Bay Bridge travel times for summer weekend getaways are Thursdays and Fridays before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.; Saturdays before 7 a.m. and after 5 p.m.; and Sundays before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.

Alternatives: South of Fredericksburg, some I-95 drivers pick up Route 17 South at Exit 126 and take it to I-64 in the Hampton Roads area. Others take the I-295 bypass around Richmond into the Petersburg area, then take Route 460 east into Hampton Roads. Travel tips: Driving I-95 southbound on Friday afternoons and northbound Sunday afternoons between D.C. and Fredericksburg can suck the joy out of vacations. The 95 Express Lanes help, up to a point, and that point is around Garrisonville Road in Stafford County, where the express lanes and the regular lanes merge.

VIRGINIA The Supreme Court on Monday left in place a lower court’s decision that redraws some of Virginia’s congressional districts and creates the possibility of electing a second black U.S. House member from the state. The justices ruled unanimously that three Virginia Republican congressmen who challenged the lower court’s decision — Reps. Randy Forbes, Robert Wittman and David Brat — do not have the necessary legal right to proceed. Without that, the court dismissed the appeal. A three-judge panel had earlier decided Virginia’s Republican-led legislature had packed African-American voters into the Hampton Roads-based 3rd Congressional District, which is represented by the state’s lone black congressman. As a result, the surrounding districts became safer for white Republican candidates. The three federal judges who examined the commonwealth’s plan said it veered from partisan gerrymandering aimed at protecting incumbents — for which the Supreme Court has shown a high tolerance — into racial gerrymandering, which the Constitution forbids. The judges gave the legislature a chance to redraw the map, but lawmakers were unable to do so. So the panel imposed a map of its own. Voters in June will go to the polls to elect members of Congress from the revised districts. ROBERT BARNES (TWP)

Syrians inspect the damage after a bombing attack at a bus station in the coastal city of Tartus on Monday

Bombings kill dozens in area loyal to Assad ISIS-claimed blasts hit two cities in previously quiet coastal Syria SYRIA A wave of coordinated bombings in Syria claimed by the Islamic State killed at least 78 people Monday in the usually calm coastal area where Russian troops are based, Syrian state media reported. The attacks targeted the cities of Tartus and Jabla in a part of the country that has remained loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad throughout Syria’s fiveyear conflict and where Russia maintains military bases in support of government forces. It marked the worst single day of violence yet in the

Mediterranean coastal region and the first time the ISIS has carried out suicide attacks there. That raised fears of possible further bombings in hitherto relatively insulated government-held areas that were thought to be “safe.” Russia said the bombings demonstrate Syria’s continued fragility. A nearly three-month-old cease-fire effort has gradually disintegrated, and negotiations aimed at securing a peace settlement remain stalled. Amaq, a news site linked to ISIS, claimed the militant group was responsible for the blasts, which coincided with an escalated regional campaign of bombings by the group as it is pushed back from strongholds in Syria and Iraq. The attacks appeared to be a well-planned operation in

which suicide bombers wearing vests and at least one car bomb detonated almost simultaneously in two cities. The sites that were attacked could have been expected to be crowded with civilians at the time, and civilians appeared to have been the main target. The blasts in Jabla struck a busy bus station, a hospital’s emergency entrance and a government electricity office, while those in Tartus also hit a bus station, as well as a residential neighborhood nearby. The blasts come two days after ISIS’s top spokesman urged followers to ramp up attacks against the group’s enemies as the holy month of Ramadan approaches and in response to battlefield setbacks.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald, under pressure to be transparent about how the VA measures wait times for veteran care, on Monday said the government should be more like Disneyland. Disney doesn’t track how long visitors wait in line for attractions to decide if they liked their experience, he said. Likewise, the VA shouldn’t be judged by that standard. “When you go to Disney, do they measure the number of hours you wait in line?” McDonald said. “What’s important is, what’s your satisfaction with the experience?” The comments were denounced by Republicans and veteran organizations, who said McDonald was trivializing veterans’ experiences. nation+world Obama kicks off visit aimed at improving ties with Southeast Asia VIETNAM Eager to banish lingering shadows of the Vietnam War, President Barack Obama lifted the U.S. embargo on selling arms to America’s former enemy Monday and made the case for a more trusting and prosperous relationship going forward. After spending his first day in Vietnam in meetings with government leaders in Hanoi, Obama will spend the next two days speaking to and meeting directly with the Vietnamese people. It’s all part of his effort to “upgrade” the U.S. relationship

with an emerging economic power in Southeast Asia and a nation that the U.S. also hopes can serve as a counterweight to Chinese aggression in the region. Tracing the arc of the U.S.Vietnamese relationship through cooperation, conflict, “painful separation” and a long reconciliation, Obama said in a news conference with the Vietnamese president that “if you consider where we have been and where we are now, the transformation in the relations between our two countries is remarkable.” President Tran Dai Quang said that he was grateful for the American people’s efforts to put an end to “an unhappy chapter in the two countries’ history,” referring to the 1965-1975 U.S.

President Barack Obama began his Vietnam visit Monday by meeting with President Tran Dai Quang.

war with Vietnam’s communists, who now run the country. Though Quang noted that “the wounds of the war have not been

fully healed in both countries,” he said, both sides are determined to have a more cooperative relationship. That mindset was evident in the friendly crowds that lined the streets to see Obama’s motorcade Monday. For Vietnam, lifting the arms embargo was a psychological boost. The U.S. partially lifted the ban in 2014, but Vietnam had pushed for full access as it tries to deal with China’s military construction in nearby seas. Activists said that by lifting the embargo, the president had given up his best leverage for pressing Vietnam to improve its human rights record. Last week, a strange-looking bear was shot by a hunter in Nunavut on Canada’s Hudson Bay. Its head was large, like a grizzly’s, but its fur was white. The bear’s genetics were not tested, but Arctic researchers seem unified in their analysis: It’s a polar-grizzly mix. A hybrid. Textbooks say these two species aren’t supposed to inhabit the same environments. Polar bears are marine mammals; grizzlies are terrestrial. But as the Arctic warms, sea ice is shrinking and the tundra is expanding. And the bears’ disparate populations are meeting, mating and creating a new breed. All hybrids that have been analyzed so far had grizzly fathers, because grizzly males roam to establish territory and come in contact with receptive female polar bears. Male polar bears don’t usually creep into grizzly habitats. Andrew Derocher, a professor of biological studies at the University of Alberta, said it won’t be long before we start seeing female grizzlies bump into male polar bears, further straining the polar bear’s genetic variation. “I suspect at the same time that that’s occurring, we’ll start to see polar bears on their way out,” he said. When will that be? Impossible to say, but some experts think that as the Arctic continues warming, it may be only a few decades, perhaps a century. ADAM POPESCU

nation+world COURTS The Supreme Court ruled Monday in favor of a black Georgia death row inmate who claimed prosectors kept African Americans off the all-white jury that convicted him of murdering a 79-year-old white woman. The court ruled 7 to 1 that Georgia prosecutors had violated the Constitution when they improperly considered race when selecting a jury to judge Timothy Tyrone Foster. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote for the majority. Justice Clarence Thomas, the lone African American on the

court, dissented, saying that the evidence was not strong enough to overturn Foster’s conviction. Foster’s lawyers, decades after the teen’s conviction in 1987, gained access to strikingly frank prosecutors’ notes under Georgia’s open record laws. The names of the black potential jurors were marked with a “B” and highlighted. Their race on juror questionnaires was circled. All were at the top of a list labeled “Definite NOs,” and each was compared with the others in the case, according to the notes, in case “it comes down to having

to pick one of the black jurors.” “The focus on race in the prosecution’s file plainly demonstrates a concerted effort to keep black prospective jurors off the jury,” Roberts wrote. While Foster will likely will win a new trial, the decision did not break ground on what actions lawyers may take in jury selection. The late Justice Thurgood Marshall once said that racial discrimination would persist in jury selection unless peremptory strikes, lawyers’ ability to reject potential jurors without reason, were curtailed. Green kicks and tells Warriors forward, Thunder’s Westbrook swap barbs over flagrant foul in Game 3 NBA PLAYOFFS Draymond Green knows who is responsible for his kick to the groin of Thunder center Steven Adams: Russell Westbrook and the rest of the NBA stars who get to the foul line with a whole lot of salesmanship. Green’s kick felled the 7-foot, 255-pound Adams during the second quarter of Golden State’s Game 3 loss to Oklahoma City in the Western Conference finals on Sunday night. Westbrook later said Green kicked Adams intentionally — and that didn’t go over well with the Warriors’ standout. “There are multiple plays where I did it later in the game when I got fouled and my right leg went up,” Green said

Monday. “I always do it. Russell said I did it on purpose, but he’s part of the superstar group that started all this acting in the NBA.” Green even pointed to a play at the end of the second quarter, when Green fouled Westbrook on a long 3-pointer. “Russell Westbrook kicked me at the end of the half,” Green said. “He just didn’t happen to catch me where I caught Steven Adams.” Westbrook wasn’t thrilled with Green’s comments, calling Green’s foul on the 3-pointer a “dumb play on his part.” “I’ve never been fined for one flop since I’ve been playing in the NBA,” Westbrook said. “I don’t know about no flopping

Warriors face 2-1 hole The Warriors have been here before. Having faced 2-1 deficits last season against the Grizzlies in the West semifinals and against the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, the Warriors’ predicament is a familiar one, and one they’ve twice overcome. “It feels the same,” Stephen Curry said. “It’s a Game 4, [and] we’ve got to win.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

or nothing. I don’t know how to flop. But it seems like he was the one that was flailing, kicking his legs out and stuff yesterday. It wasn’t me.” Green was called for a Flagrant 1 foul and Adams later noted that Green had kneed him

in the same spot during Game 2. The defending champion Warriors trail 2-1 in the series and will have their All-Star forward for Game 4 tonight (9, TNT) after the NBA ruled Monday that the play wasn’t worthy of a suspension. Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he needs Green at his best after he scored just six points on 1-for-9 shots and committed four turnovers in Sunday’s loss. “He needs to refocus a little bit,” Kerr said. “He’ll admit it. It was not one of his best games — in fact, it was one of his worst. The great thing with Draymond is he always turns it around. … When things aren’t looking great, he usually plays his best.” CLIFF BRUNT (AP)

3 AL West: Mariners Robinson Cano is finally playing up to that 10-year, $240 million deal Seattle gave him in December 2013. He led the majors with 39 RBIs entering Monday.

2 AL Central: White Sox Chris Sale is undefeated in his nine starts this season and has a 1.58 ERA, and the Royals are the only team in the AL with a better bullpen ERA than Chicago’s 2.62.

1 AL East: Orioles Baltimore had the most home runs hit and fewest allowed in the AL entering Monday. Chris Tillman (6-1, 2.61 ERA) has pitched like the ace the Orioles have been missingg for yyears.

NFL sought to influence brain study, report says

“I feel like I’m a max player and that’s what I’m looking for. If Washington can’t meet that requirement then I may be thinking elsewhere.”

NFL NFL officials improperly sought to influence a government study on the link between football and brain disease, according to a senior House Democrat in a report issued Monday. New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone says the league tried to strong-arm the National Institutes of Health into taking the project away from a researcher that the NFL feared was biased. The NFL had agreed to donate $30 million to the NIH to fund brain research but backed out after the institutes refused to take a $16 million grant away from prominent Boston University researcher Robert Stern. He’s a leading expert on the link between football and brain diseases such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Taxpayers are instead bearing the cost. The NFL denied Pallone’s finding. Some of the members of the NFL’s Head, Neck, and Spine Committee who opposed Stern had also sought the grant. “This investigation confirms the NFL inappropriately attempted to use its unrestricted gift as leverage to steer funding away from one of its critics,” Pallone said. “Since its research agreement with NIH was clear

that it could not weigh in on the grant selection process, the NFL should never have tried to influence that process.” Pallone initiated the investigation after ESPN reported that the NFL had backed out of funding the NIH study because of its objections to Stern. NFL Medical Director Dr. Elliot Pellman emailed the executive director of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health, which raises private funding for NIH research, and said the league had significant concerns regarding Boston University “and their ability to be unbiased and collaborative.” T h e N F L’s e m a i l w a s

forwarded to Dr. Walter Koroshetz of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the NIH, who was in charge of selecting a recipient for the grant. He responded that there was “lots of history here” and that the NFL had problems because the research would be “led by the people who first broke the science open, and NFL owners and leadership think of them as the creators of the problem.” Pallone found that NIH officials acted properly in not bending to the NFL’s will. NIH policy prohibits donors from influencing which researchers receive grants, a process that relies on peer review.

BRADLEY BEAL, reiterating he wants to stay in Washington — but at the right price. Beal, 22, is a restricted free agent this summer, meaning the NBA’s 29 other teams can offer him a contract once free agency starts on July 1 and the Wizards would have 72 hours to match. A max deal would pay Beal around $23 million next season.

Tom Brady will appeal his fourgame suspension by the NFL, seeking a second hearing before a circuit court. The decision by the Patriots quarterback was confirmed Monday by the NFL Players Association. If the appeal is denied by the full panel, Brady could try to take his case to the Supreme Court. The court ruled 2-1 on April 25 that Commissioner Roger Goodell was within his rights to suspend Brady for four games for his role in using improperly inflated footballs in the 2015 AFC title game. fit Amina Vohra, owner of District Groove, leads a class in a dance inspired by Beyonce’s “Baby Boy.”

DANCE It’s easy to be mesmerized by Beyonce’s rapid-fire dance moves. The dramatic “Crazy in Love” leg strut. The “Run the World” shoulder shrug. And, most famously, the “Single Ladies” hand wave that inspired endless dance covers, parodies and flash mobs. If your dance moves don’t hold a candle to Beyonce’s bodyrolling or booty-shaking, you can get some practice at a Beyonceinspired dance fitness class at District Groove in Chevy Chase — just in time to show off at the singer’s Baltimore stop on her “Formation” tour. The two-hour workout features a blend of jazz, African, hip-hop and dance-hall dance styles by incorporating choreography from Beyonce’s music videos and live performances. The class we went to, “Formation,” combined moves from the singer’s show-stealing halftime performance at the 2016 Super Bowl and the song’s

music video, which features New Orleans imagery and highlights social activism. On a recent Saturday, a dozen dancers trickled into the large, mirrored studio space. For the first few minutes, we stretched, preparing physically and mentally to take on Beyonce’s moves. Half of the class members were devoted Beyonce fans; two sisters, Adaisha Kemp and Ashley Garrison, have been fans of the pop star since her Destiny’s Child days. They managed to score tour tickets and are planning to enjoy her Baltimore concert with eight other girlfriends. Johanna Olivas, a soon-to-be Johns Hopkins graduate student, received a package of classes from her husband as an early graduation present. Michelle Jacobs, a high school math teacher, gifted herself five lessons in preparation for her 40th birthday party. But there was also a small contingent of non-Beyhive members, including Trevor Richardson, 25, a junior at the University of Maryland. The only male in attendance, he had come to the

class for a good workout. A selfproclaimed Goo Goo Dolls fan, he had never seen or even listened to the “Formation” track. As we began to get into our starting formation, Amina Vohra, 33, a professional dancer and owner of District Groove, encouraged us to approach the class with an open mind and to not be too hard on ourselves if our dance skills did not stack up to stadium-level standards. The class simplifies every few lines of the song into manageable bits of choreography. Moves range from basic gestures (head -nodding) to full-body popping (chest out, butt out). Harder moves, in which feet, torso and arms are involved, are broken

down even further into easily digestible parts. Vohra routinely surveyed the students to spot troublesome areas and reinforce learned moves by repeating choruses and bridge sequences. “OK, ladies, now let’s get in formation. … Prove to me you got some coordination,” Beyonce belted encouragingly over the sound system. Vohra has offered dance classes inspired by mega performers such as Britney Spears and Michael Jackson since 2011. But when District Groove introduced a Beyonce-inspired course in 2014 (at the request of her students), she realized she had discovered a gold mine. Demand spiked, especially among Beyonce fans, who commonly show up to classes in concert T-shirts and outfits inspired by the singer’s apparel. “It’s definitely a full-body workout. The simplified version, by itself, is exhausting,” Vohra says. “Just imagine being Beyonce and having to do the full version, in high heels, while singing.” MEGAN McDONOUGH

A new study in Cell Reports offers clues as to why pain can persist long after an injury has healed. “We already knew that chronic-pain patients have nerves that are more active, and we think this is probably due to various proteins and channels in those nerves having different properties,” lead author Franziska Denk said in a press release. “We want to know why these proteins and channels should maintain their altered function over such a long period of time.” Normally, the majority of proteins in the brain have a half-life of less than 14 days. Yet in mice with chronic pain, Denk and her colleagues found that certain crucial proteins were “being replaced by malfunctioning versions of themselves.” The scientists think the problem is with the epigenome, the molecular signals that turn genes on or off.

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

We’re living life at different speeds Q. My husband chooses “self-development” activities over time with me. He gets into hobbies and exercise and wants to learn new skill sets, and it occupies him on weekends. I typically want to relax, maybe go out to dinner, watch a movie or two. He wants to learn Chinese or train for a triathlon. He says this is good for him so that it is good for us, but I find myself lonely. FEELING ALONE I see two issues here. One is your different engines — his being go-go-go (translated into Mandarin) and yours being more moderate. For this, you might search out hobbies you could do in tandem, carve out sacred weekend time to spend together or look into activities you might pursue alongside him (even if it’s reading a novel on a chaise lounge while he

tinkers on something nearby). The other issue is more complex: your feeling lonely. It seems you could use a little more spark on your own — new pursuits, additional social connections or just an extra buddy to occasionally watch a movie with. A little bit from you and a little bit from him can add up to bridge this gap and make for a much better balance.

You’ve let self-doubt creep in, when this is just a logistical issue. Daily-life inertia has made the sisters retreat back into themselves, but there’s no evidence it’s because they no longer want to be close with you. Somebody always has to put forth the effort, and it’s just as reasonable for it to be you as them; it’s OK if your motivation is a bit higher than theirs, since they have each other. Instead of creating a “wedging myself in” dynamic, suggest planning a new trip that is far enough out that you can collaborate to suit everyone. Tell them you’ve missed them and that you want your kids to spend time together. You love them, they love you, and you’re family. Passports and time zones pale in comparison. Send your questions for Baggage Check to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@ wpost.com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of the book “The Friendship Fix” (friendshipfix.com).

entertainment Hit ABC comedy proves ratings can soar when TV reflects more of U.S.

Happy 75th birthday, Bob! Robert Allen Zimmerman was born on May 24, 1941, in Duluth, Minn. He’s better known as Bob Dylan, the man who changed popular music with his words, voice and vision. In honor of Dylan’s diamond jubilee birthday today, here are three things to know about rock’s greatest songwriter, who brought listeners such songs as “Blowin’ in the Wind and “Like a Rolling Stone.” (AP) All in the family In 1998, Dylan and his son Jakob, of The Wallflowers, both won Grammys. Dad took home three, including album of the year for “Time Out of Mind.” His son grabbed two, including best rock song for “One Headlight.”

Lyrical legalese Dylan’s lyrics have been popular in U.S. legal opinions and briefs written by judges and lawyers. According to a 2007 study, Dylan lyrics were cited 186 times, compared with 74 by the Beatles, s, who were the runners-up.

TELEVISION Television is mostly entertaining, sometimes enlightening and, occasionally, can make a difference. The sitcom “Fresh Off the Boat” hits all the marks. Because of it, along with ABC siblings “black-ish” and “Dr. Ken” (and, at CW, “Jane the Virgin”), network TV’s American family photo album is starting to look authentic. The contribution of “Fresh Off the Boat” is especially notable.

It’s the first network prime-time comedy about an Asian-American family since Margaret Cho’s “All-American Girl” in 1994, which lasted a season. “Dr. Ken” star Ken Jeong (“Community,” “The Hangover”) gladly acknowledges that the success of “Fresh Off the Boat” paved the way for his series. “Even if I wasn’t a part of any of it, never in a million years would I have thought any of this would happen,” said Jeong, who guest stars in the season finale of “Fresh Off the Boat,” airing at 8:30 p.m. today. “It really is beyond satisfying” to see two shows on the air and with characters of different Asian origins,

he said. “Fresh Off the Boat” follows a Taiwanese-American family’s mostly eager plunge into the melting pot of the 1990s. On the flip side, “black-ish” is about a contemporary AfricanAmerican family’s efforts to hold on to its cultural identity. “Dr. Ken,” about a Korean-American husband and father, gives the formulaic domestic sitcom a cheerful ethnic tweak. The shows’ ratings are proof that viewers are responding to diverse stories, with both “Fresh Off the Boat” and “black-ish” secure on ABC’s schedule and “Dr. Ken” returning for its second year. Obama dines with Bourdain President Barack Obama dined in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Monday with CNN personality Anthony Bourdain, whose “Parts Unknown” food travelogue premiered in 2013. Bourdain met with Obama to discuss the purpose of the president’s trip to Asia and his interest in the people, food and culture of Vietnam, CNN said. CAROLYN CASTER (AP)

Bourdain later tweeted that the meal at Bun cha Huong Lien cost $6, and he picked up the check. For each episode of Bourdain’s show, the chef travels to a different part of the world to explore that area’s culture, primarily by sharing in its distinct native cuisine. The interview with Obama will be featured in the eighth season of “Parts Unknown,” which begins in September. (AP)

Cosby to appear in court today for criminal case

Angelina Jolie appointed to teach at London School

Bill Cosby is due in court today so a judge can decide whether there’s enough evidence to send sexual assault accusations from 2004 to trial in suburban Philadelphia. Prosecutors this past year reopened Andrea Constand’s complaint that Cosby drugged and molested her after his deposition in her related lawsuit surfaced. In his testimony, Cosby describes giving drugs and alcohol to women before sex; paying off ex-lovers; and hosting at his home Constand, whom he’d met at Temple University, where he was a trustee and she managed the women’s basketball team. (AP)

Oscar-winning actress and activist Angelina Jolie has been appointed a visiting professor at one of Britain’s most prestigious universities. The London School of Economics announced Monday that Jolie will be working with students studying for a master’s degree in Women, Peace and Security. Among others appointed to teach the course is former British Foreign Secretary William Hague. Jolie said she is “looking forward to teaching and to learning from the students as well as to sharing my own experiences of working alongside governments and the United Nations.” (AP)

Gold’s Gym: South Arlington Trainer: Jermaine Gary’s weight-loss goal: 50 pounds

“While the gym is still an important component of my workout routine, I imagine I’ll be doing a lot more exercising outside now that the weather’s getting warmer. I’ve already begun biking more and hope to fit in more kayaking and swimming. Currently I’m a fan of doing the Arlington Loop, a 17-mile bike ride around Arlington and along the Potomac River. It’s really scenic and helps get you out and about while also letting you exercise.” JEFF

“As the weather gets nicer, I hope to incorporate at least one daily short walk outside during the weekdays. I also may finally pull out my bicycle and explore some of the trails near my home. The fresh air and varied terrains are the biggest difference when exercising outside. Outdoor exercising can present more of a challenge, in everything from focus (look: Nature!) to how you burn calories.” REGINA Gold’s Gym: Merrifield Trainer: Philip

“I love being outdoors. Now that the weather is looking more promising, I plan on doing more activities on the vast array of trails and paths in and around the area. Exercising outside in the early morning air gives me more energy, allows for meditation, and makes me feel whole and refreshed. After my outdoor workout, I’m pumped physically and emotionally, and I can handle anything the work day throws at me.” GARY

Emma Watson as Belle in the live-action version of “Beauty and the Beast,” for which Disney released a 90-second teaser trailer Monday. Watson appears in the final moments of the video as she reaches for the Beast’s forbidden rose. Other stars appearing in the new version of the 1991 animated film include Ewan McGregor, Ian McKellen and Emma Thompson. “Beauty and the Beast” opens in theaters March 17, 2017.

“Florida’s already terrifying wilderness now has giant maneating Nile crocodiles.” @_FLORIDAMAN on a recent study

that identified four reptiles found in Florida in recent years as Nile crocodiles. The large predators, native to sub-Saharan Africa, can grow to 21 feet long and weigh 1.5 tons. While the origin of the — considerably smaller — Nile crocs found in Florida is unknown, they may have been introduced via the exotic pet trade.

“Apple is rejecting a game because it deals with politics and war. Utterly ridiculous.” @AUSTINKELMORE on Apple’s decision Sunday to reclassify “Liyla and The Shadows of War” as a game in its app store. Apple had initially attempted to classify the game — about the harsh realities of life in the Gaza Strip — as a “News” app due to its political angle, but reconsidered after fans and developers protested.

“Honestly, @GillianA as the next James Bond would be the greatest thing of all time. #NextBond” @KUMAILN joins in the fan campaign to have “X-Files” actor Gillian Anderson become the next “Jane” Bond. Fans have been using the hashtag #NextBond on Twitter to share their choices for Daniel Craig’s successor, and Anderson has emerged as a clear favorite.
