smile, Backstrom remained the practical, calming presence he has always been. “We’ve been playing good as a team,” Backstrom said. “The best I’ve ever seen us play, I think.” Few teams have a better appreciation of what it takes than these Capitals. In nine previous postseason runs in the Ovechkin era, they never advanced out of the second round. “It’s something, to be honest with you, I thought would have happened sooner,” said Jay Beagle, the third longest-tenured player in the organization. Since 2008, there were four

Game 7 defeats on home ice and three season-ending losses to the rival Penguins. There were also 3-1 series leads blown in 2010 and 2015, and a blown 2-0 lead in 2013. “We have been through all the battles in the playoffs, all the losses,” said Ovechkin, who owns career-highs this postseason with 12 goals and 22 points in 19 games. “… Finally, we get what we want.” In 2018, the Capitals have reversed their tortured past. They overcame a 2-0 series deficit in the first round, ended Pittsburgh’s hex on them in the second and knocked out Tampa Bay on their home ice in the third.

NHL PLAYOFFS Before captain Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom could share a beverage to celebrate reaching the Stanley Cup Final, the Capitals’ longest tenured players shared a tight embrace and a few quick words Wednesday night in Tampa, Fla. “You don’t even have to say much,” Backstrom said. “You just have to look at each other. We’ve been waiting a long time for this.” Ovechkin is in his 13th NHL season; Backstrom his 11th. After eliminating the Lightning with a 4-0 victory in Game 7, they are heading to the finals for the first time as part of a 43-yearold franchise still in search of its first championship. They will face the Vegas Golden Knights, an expansion team not even 43 weeks removed from its very first training camp. Sporting matching Eastern Conference champions hats in their postgame embrace Wednesday, Backstrom could be seen telling Ovechkin, “Four more.” The quest for those remaining four wins begins Monday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. While an emotional Ovechkin was still processing that achievement, releasing euphoric screams and flashing his gap-toothed

After 13 years in the NHL, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is headed to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Ovi tests hockey gods Since the Flyers’ Eric Lindros rejected the Prince of Wales Trophy in 1997, NHL players have been superstitious about touching the conference title prize. On Wednesday, Alex Ovechkin happily hoisted the Wales. Dale Hunter, the former Caps captain, also touched it in 1998 before Detroit swept the Caps in the Cup. (EXPRESS)

“I think everybody is happy, but we still have unfinished [business],” Ovechkin said. “We’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time. We understand what it has to take to be in the final.” Washington has been to the Stanley Cup Final once before but was swept by Detroit in 1998. Just qualifying for the playoffs was a challenge early in franchise history. When the top 16 teams in the league made the postseason, the Capitals finished 17th (1980, 1981). When the format changed to four teams per division, they finished fifth (1982). In 1985, the Capitals became the first NHL team to blow a 2-0 lead in a best-of-five series. The Caps lost Game 5 at home to the Islanders. Two years later, the NHL expanded the first round to a best-of-seven. Naturally the Capitals blew a 3-1 series lead to the Islanders with a Game 7 loss at home in quadruple overtime. Winning the Stanley Cup now would mean a great deal to fans and players past and present. “All of us who have worn the jersey before, we all would like nothing more than to see a team that has come so close win the Stanley Cup,” Yvon Labre — whose No. 7 sweater hangs in the rafters at Capital One Arena — said last year. “The players deserve it. This city deserves it. And the fans deserve to see it.” BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS)

Nate Schmidt

George McPhee

Marc-Andre Fleury

When the Capitals left the swift-skating defenseman unprotected, Vegas nabbed him in the expansion draft. Schmidt, 26, posted a career-high 36 points in 76 games this year with 10 power-play assists — the first 10 of his career.

He was in his first of 17 years as general manager of the Caps when they made their first finals run in 1998. He’s made smart moves to acquire Ryan Reaves from Pittsburgh and hang on to pending free agents David Perron and James Neal.

The Capitals finally ousted the Penguins, but they still have to get through their old nemesis from Pittsburgh. Now the goalie in Vegas, Fleury helped eliminate the Caps from the playoffs in seven games in 2009 and 2017.

Series schedule (best of seven): Game 1: Monday night in Las Vegas (8, NBC)

Game 2: Wednesday night in Las Vegas (8, NBCSN)

We’re going to Las Vegas! CAPITALS In the days and hours leading up to Wednesday night’s Game 7, Jake Genachowski and his buddies didn’t bother talking much about the possibility of attending the Stanley Cup finals. “Being lifelong D.C. sports fans, I think our confidence in actually winning was pretty low,” the 26-year-old said. But then the Capitals scored in the opening moments of their Eastern Conference finals matchup with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and then two more times in the second period. Genachowski and his friends were watching with a Capitals-crazed crowd at Macintyre’s in Woodley Park and, when Washington pulled ahead 3-0, they started looking up flights to Las Vegas. With three minutes left in the game, the group pulled the trigger and booked the trip. Now comes the hard part: getting

seats to the Capitals’ first Stanley Cup finals game since 1998. “We have not locked in on tickets yet,” Genachowski said Thursday morning. “They’re pretty expensive — way more than the entire trip.” Anyone waking up Thursday hoping for an up-close view of the Capitals’ series opener against the Vegas Golden Knights was met with a stern, pricey reality. The cheapest seats available Thursday morning on Ticketmaster — the NHL’s official partner — cost $914 apiece. On StubHub, they were $983. Vivid Seats had one for $828, but the rest were at least $920. SeatGeek listed tickets for as low as $908, a price that jumped to more than $1,100 with fees. It was sobering news for Capitals fans who were excited about a Vegas trip. As of late Thursday morning, Kelvin Spriggs — who had offered up his kidney to raise funds for tickets — said no one had taken him up on his offer. “I honestly have no idea what the going rate for a kidney would be,” he joked.

Here are some of the best tweets from fans after the Capitals won Game 7, sending them to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1998.

Genachowski and his two buddies got a good deal on a flight and hotel. They figured they’d try to sort out the game tickets later, but barring a big night at the casino, they might not get in the arena Monday. For them, being close is good enough. It doesn’t hurt that the first two games are in Las Vegas. “Would we be doing if they were playing Winnipeg?” Genachowski said. “Probably not.” RICK MAESE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“I have no idea even how to begin to process this. If you weren’t here for ’98 because of age or interest, I earnestly hope you enjoy every single second of this. This is what it feels like. This is why we do this. This is the entire point. It makes it all worth it. #Caps” — @granthpaulsen “Today is for the believers. Metro to continue service-hour cuts

MONTGOMERY COUNTY

Officials warn of possible measles exposure in Md.

It’s been over two years since system closed at midnight and 3 a.m. TRANSPORTATION With little comment or fanfare, the Metro board voted Thursday to continue the existing schedule of reduced late-night hours, a legal formality as the region enters its second year of codified service cutbacks. It’s been more than two years since the region had regularly scheduled late-night service, when the system closed at midnight on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends. From summer to 2016 to summer 2017, evening hours were temporarily reduced due to the SafeTrack maintenance project. Then last June, the Metro board voted to allow General Manager Paul Wiedefeld to curtail late-night service for a twoyear period to give workers at the ailing transit system more nighttime work hours to perform repairs on the system. The result: Metro closes at 11:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays; and at 11 p.m. Sundays. The June 2017 resolution requires Metro to provide a track repair progress report to the board halfway through the twoyear period as a prerequisite for continuing the limited hours. According to the report, which the board accepted at Thursday’s meeting, the extra work time has resulted in a 35 percent reduction

in track defects, a 59 percent reduction in the amount of emergency work performed during service hours and a 344 percent increase in the amount of time scheduled to perform maintenance on track switches. When the progress report was discussed at a committee meeting earlier this month, board members said the curtailed late-night hours had resulted in improved safety and reliability, and that it was important to continue. “I think this is the right thing to do,” said board member Clarence Crawford. “It looks like we’ve made good use of the additional time.” Said board member Catherine Hudgins: “If we want Metro to continue and work toward being a reliable and safe system to run, this is the important part you must do in order to get there.” MARTINE POWERS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Brain experts appointed in case of slain Va. teen A judge has appointed two brain experts to evaluate a man facing the death penalty in the slaying of a Virginia teenage girl last year. The appointments Thursday to evaluate Darwin Martinez-Torres, 23, came despite the objections of a prosecutor who called the request “neuro-witchcraft.” Martinez-Torres is facing capital murder and rape charges in the June killing of Nabra Hassanen of Reston. Defense lawyers say a key part of their case will be MartinezTorres’ limited mental ability. (AP)

D.C. Circulator is getting rid of two routes to help increase service.

Circulator to eliminate two routes TRANSPORTATION The D.C. Circulator is restructuring two of the system’s underperforming routes this summer, eliminating service where there is low ridership and redirecting it to popular destinations. City officials say the route changes, effective June 24, and other adjustments to operations will boost service. The Circulator will add hours of operation along some routes, eliminate service in areas with low ridership and add buses where there is greater demand, officials said. The Potomac Avenue-Skyland route will essentially be eliminated. The Circulator will no longer serve Potomac Avenue Metro or Skyland Town Center, where officials say riders can use Metrobus as an alternative. Instead, buses will be deployed to connect Union Station and the Congress Heights Metro station via Barracks Row and historic Anacostia. The route is adding weekend service. The Union Station-Navy Yard route also is being eliminated. Instead, service will launch from Eastern Market to L’Enfant Plaza, with stops at Barracks Row, at Navy Yard and in The Wharf, the new development along the Southwest Waterfront. Lawmakers briefed on secret FBI source

STUDY

E-cigs are no magic bullet for quitting

POLITICS Justice Department and intelligence officials briefed top Republican and Democratic lawmakers Thursday on a confidential FBI source who aided in the investigation of whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russia, attempting to defuse a partisan conflict over use of the source and the FBI’s reluctance to reveal information about the matter. Reversing its earlier position, the White House allowed top Democrats to join Republicans for two meetings Thursday. Chief of staff John Kelly and White House lawyer Emmet Flood also were also present for parts of the gatherings, though the White House insisted they made only “brief remarks before the meetings started to relay the President’s desire for as much openness as possible under the law.” White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders previously said that no one from the White House would attend. It was not immediately clear whether the Justice Department had provided information that would allay conservatives’ concerns, particularly those of House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., who has pushed vigorously for

Speaker Paul Ryan said Thursday the Justice Department was cooperating with lawmakers.

information about the FBI’s source, or President Trump. House Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis., said the intelligence committee had “the responsibility to ask tough questions of the executive branch” and said the Justice Department was cooperating, though he offered no details. He did not attend the second meeting, citing a scheduling conflict. The president has made the confidential source the focal point of his latest line of attack against the Russia probe, alleging that the FBI implanted a spy in the Trump campaign for political purposes. The source, Stefan A. Halper, an ex-University of Cambridge professor and veteran of past GOP administrations, had contact with three advisers to

the campaign when Trump was running for president to discuss foreign policy. Trump tweeted Thursday: “Large dollars were paid to the Spy, far beyond normal. A large study of company wellness programs published Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine has found that e-cigarettes work no better than traditional stop-smoking tools in helping people quit. Critics of the study say it didn’t rigorously test effectiveness, just compared e-cigarettes to other methods among 6,000 smokers who were offered help to quit. Providing e-cigarettes “did not improve the number of people who quit compared to essentially doing nothing,” said study author Dr. Scott Halpern. “The very best way to help them quit is to offer them money.” (AP)

Historic abortion vote roils Ireland Friday’s referendum could repeal country’s strict anti-abortion law

shift in public opinion that antiabortion campaigners were hoping for. Still, David Quinn of the socially conservative Iona Institute says the “no” forces opposed to abortion rights still have “a fighting chance,” and recalled other recent political upsets. “Remember: Brexit wasn’t supposed to pass, and Donald Trump wasn’t supposed to get elected,” he said. Activists from both sides have put up thousands of emotional signs pleading their case, and there were small demonstrations in Dublin on Wednesday as the vote neared. Friday’s poll will be the fourth time in as many decades that Irish voters have been asked to

IRELAND An abortion debate that has inflamed passions in Ireland for decades will come down to a single question on Friday: yes or no? The referendum on whether to repeal the country’s strict anti-abortion law is seen by antiabortion activists as a last-ditch stand against what they view as a European norm of abortionon-demand; for abortion rights advocates, it is a fundamental moment for declaring an Irish woman’s right to choose. If the “yes” side prevails and the constitutional ban on abortions is repealed, the government plans to introduce legislation that would allow abortion within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and later in specific cases when the woman is at grave risk or the fetus is likely to die in the womb or shortly after birth. Parliament would then debate this plan. Opinion surveys suggest a continuing change of attitudes in Ireland, a traditionally Roman Catholic country that surprised many by voting in favor of samesex marriage in 2015. Both sides generally agree that the frenzied campaign ahead of Friday’s vote has not produced the dramatic

decide on the issue of abortion. But this time the debate has been roiled by two factors that voters have not faced before: the extraordinary power of social media and the increased availability through telemedicine websites of new drugs that allow women to make decisions over whether to end a pregnancy in the privacy of their homes. At the heart of the vote is whether to reverse a far-reaching 1983 referendum that added an amendment to Ireland’s constitution that committed authorities to equally defend the right to life of a mother and a fetus from the moment of conception. Abortion is legal in Ireland only in rare cases when the woman’s life is in danger. LEO ENRIGHT AND GREGORY KATZ (AP)

Trump cancels summit President says the U.S. is ‘ready if necessary’ to respond if N. Korea engages in ‘reckless act’

WASHINGTONPOST.COM WORLDVIEWS

The bad timing of the letter to North Korea

NER, JOHN HUDSON AND ANNA FIFIELD

Just hours after North Korea demolished its only known nuclear testing site, Punggye-ri, in what was intended as a gesture of goodwill ahead of a planned summit with the U.S., President Trump announced he had canceled the summit. That these two events occurred on the same day may be an unfortunate coincidence. In his letter to Kim canceling the summit, Trump did not mention the demolition of the test site. But North Korea had hoped the closure of the nuclear testing site would be a high-profile media event. It had invited foreign reporters to observe the demolition. Now, North Korea may feel that it made important concessions for a summit that was canceled before it even began. Pyongyang will be asking what exactly it got in return. “North Korea is certainly at fault,” said Lee Seong-hyon, a research fellow at the left-leaning Sejong Institute in Seoul. “But the U.S. was also not delivering what North Korea was expecting in return.” Lee added that Thursday’s move made Trump look impulsive. “Some people think Kim got the moral higher ground,” he said. “Certainly no Nobel Prize for Trump.” Kim may think he was tricked by Trump, Hu Xijin, editor of the Chinese state newspaper Global Times, wrote on Twitter. “Many people would think so too.”

a meeting at the White House. “It is difficult to deal with these sensitive and difficult diplomatic problems with this current way of communicating,” Moon said, urging the two leaders to have direct dialogue. Trump’s decision came amid hostile warnings from North Korea in recent days that it was reconsidering its participation, including a statement that the U.S. must decide whether to “meet us in a meeting room or encounter us at [a] nuclear-tonuclear showdown.” A close aide to Kim unleashed a torrent of invective against the Trump administration Thursday morning, calling Vice President Pence a “political dummy” for remarks he made Monday in a television interview that referred to the downfall of the late Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. North Korea has bristled at Trump administration suggestions that it follow the “Libyan

POLITICS President Trump on Thursday canceled a summit next month with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, citing “tremendous anger and open hostility” from the rogue nation in a letter explaining his abrupt decision. “I feel it is inappropriate, at this time, to have this longplanned meeting,” Trump wrote to Kim in a letter the White House released Thursday morning. The summit — which had the potential to be a major diplomatic victory for Trump — had been planned for June 12 in Singapore. Speaking later at the White House, Trump sounded a bellicose note, relaying that the U.S. military is “ready if necessary” to take action against North Korea if it engages in a “foolish or reckless act” and that South Korea and Japan are willing to shoulder the costs. At the same time, Trump held open the possibility that he and Kim could meet at a later date to discuss denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, which Trump has been pushing. “While many things can happen and a great opportunity lies ahead potentially, I believe that this is a tremendous setback for North Korea and indeed a setback for the world,” Trump said, adding that the U.S. will continue to impose tough economic sanctions against the nation. After an emergency meeting at midnight with his top aides, South Korean President Moon Jae-in said he was “very perplexed and sorry” that the summit had been canceled. Trump’s announcement came less than 24 hours after Moon returned from

A diplomatic loss In canceling the meeting, President Trump forfeits what had been a largely popular decision to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. A Washington Post-ABC News poll from April found that 56 percent of Americans supported the summit in an attempt to get North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons, even though two-thirds of adults said it was unlikely that the nation would actually do so. model” to abandon its nuclear efforts. Gadhafi was killed in 2011 in a Western-backed intervention after giving up his nuclear materials in 2003 and 2004. In reaction to the cancellation, Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., questioned why U.S. officials repeatedly raised the prospect of the “Libya model” as a road map for denuclearization and admonished the Trump administration

for a “lack of deep preparation.” “It’s pretty amazing that the administration might be shocked that North Korea is acting as North Korea might normally act,” he said. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo objected to Menendez’s characterization of a lack of planning, saying the U.S. negotiating team was “fully prepared.” “We were fully engaged over the past weeks to prepare for this meeting,” he said. In explaining the summit’s demise, Pompeo said there was a breakdown in communication in recent days between the two preparation teams that he attributed to the North Korean side. “We got a lot of dial tones,” Pompeo said. nation+world Inquiry: Missile that downed jet belonged to Russian military NETHERLANDS A Dutch-led international team of investigators said Thursday that a missile that downed a Malaysia Airlines jetliner over eastern Ukraine in 2014 came from the Russian military, opening the possibility that Dutch prosecutors could sue the Kremlin in connection with the attack that killed all 298 on board. The long-running inquiry already had established that a Russian-made Buk antiaircraft missile downed Flight 17, but it had not previously made a direct link to the Russian military. The

Kremlin has always denied involvement in the incident. Criminal charges against the Russian military or Russia’s government probably would exacerbate tensions between the Kremlin and the West even further, implicating Russian officials in the deaths of European tourists on their way to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The attack on July 17, 2014, led to a crushing round of Western sanctions against Russia. Since then, the Kremlin has clashed with Europe and the United States over issues such as Russia’s support for Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad, the attempt to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election and the nerve agent poisoning in March of a former

Russian spy in Britain. The investigative team “has come to the conclusion that the Buk TELAR by which MH17 was

downed originated from the 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade from Kursk, in the Russian Federation,” said Wilbert Paulissen, the head of the crime squad of the Dutch national police. “All of the vehicles in the convoy carrying the missile were part of the Russian armed forces.” Investigators have been working to determine whether Russian troops shot down the plane or whether it was Ukrainian rebels to whom the antiaircraft system had been supplied. The missile system is technically complex, and Western diplomats have long said they doubted that the rebels would have had the technical expertise to target the high-flying jet.

SWIMMING Ben Lecomte, a 50-year-old Frenchman turned Texan, will slip into the water on Sunday off the coast of Choshi, Japan, and start swimming. If all goes as planned, he won’t set foot on land for six months. In November, Lecomte hopes to paddle and kick all the way to San Francisco, becoming the first person to swim across the Pacific Ocean. “For me, swimming is a passion,” Lecomte explained in a recent interview. “But if it’s just swimming for pleasure, that’s limited. I need to have greater purpose and a bigger vision.” It doesn’t get much bigger than the Pacific, which Lecomte has been targeting for nearly 20 years. In 1998, he successfully crossed the Atlantic. The Japan-San Francisco trek will measure 5,500 miles, a staged attempt that will take 180 or so days. His swim from Cape Cod to France in 1998 measured 3,700 miles and took 73 days. He’ll have an eight-person crew that will be collecting and studying data on both the ocean and Lecomte throughout the journey. He will be accompanied by a sailboat and each day, a smaller inflatable motorboat or kayak will lead him in the water, keeping him on course. Lecomte is aiming to swim eight hours each day, covering 40 miles of choppy waters, and then spending his nights recuperating on the sailboat. RICK MAESE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CELTICS AT CAVALIERS | GAME 6: 8:30 TONIGHT, ESPN

A Kyrie problem … for Cavs

LeBron’s lack of scoring help highlights the hole left by trading the point guard to Boston LeBron James scored a game-high 26 points Wednesday, but isn’t getting much help from his teammates.

MADDIE MEYER (GETTY IMAGES)

ANALYSIS There was a Kyrie Irving sighting in Game 5, but merely on his teammate’s feet. While Boston Celtics rookie Jayson Tatum continued his bre a kout p ostse a s on r u n Wednesday night, inching closer to the NBA Finals, he wore green Kyrie 4 Nikes. Just as visible throughout the Eastern Conference finals is the impact that the absence of Irving, the five-time All-Star point guard, is having on the series. Just not for the Celtics, who stretched a homely performance into a 96-83 win and a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. April’s season-ending surgery for Irving, who spent three seasons as James’ sidekick in Cleveland before requesting a trade last summer, has influenced Boston in many ways, even though his gritty teammates can close out the Cavaliers on Friday. Cleveland, meanwhile, could use Irving now. LeBron James received no help Wednesday from even his most trusted teammates. Three starters (George Hill, J.R. Smith and Tristan Thompson) combined to score 10 points on 2-of14 shooting while Kevin Love

contributed only four of his 14 points in the second half. The Cavaliers needed those four players just to equal Tatum’s total; he finished with a Celticshigh 24 points and exceeded 300 points for the postseason. While James poured in a

White Sox catcher Castillo banned 80 games for PEDs

Police say Incognito threw weights, ranted at gym

MLB suspended Chicago White Sox catcher Welington Castillo for 80 games Thursday after a positive test for performance-enhancing substance Erythropoietin (EPO). The hormone stimulates red-blood cell production and is often used by cyclists. Castillo, 31, is batting .267 with six homers. He stands to lose more than $3.5 million in salary after becoming the eighth MLB player to be suspended for PEDs this year. (AP)

Police took veteran NFL guard Richie Incognito to a Florida mental hospital Wednesday after he allegedly threw weights and tennis balls at gym employees and another person and told officers the government is spying on him. Boca Raton police released a report Thursday detailing officers’ interaction with Incognito, 34. The other gym patron called 911 to report Incognito’s behavior. (AP)

game-high 26 points, he looked efficient in some ways (11-of-22 from the floor) and sloppy in others (six turnovers). Boston has figured out how to play and win without Irving. Cleveland, in its worst performances, has lacked the offensive

gusto the dynamic point guard can bring to the court. “We were very stagnant, not moving the ball the way we did at home,” said Thompson, who had one point and six rebounds. “I think we’re a much better team when we move the ball.” That’s one way of looking at why only two Cavaliers players scored in double digits. Cleveland’s anemic play in Boston, however, continued a trend from previous road games. In Game 1, the Cavaliers trailed by 29 points. In Game 2, the starting backcourt of Hill and Smith combined for only three points. After the game, James was asked how Cleveland has prepared for a challenge like Friday’s potential elimination game. “Everybody is different. I know how I prepare myself. I know how I prepare going into each and every game, no matter if it’s elimination or 0-0, whatever the case may be in a playoff game,” James said. “So I can speak for myself and know what my mindset will be on just trying to help us, like I said, do every facet of the game, to try to extend the series. We’ll see what happens.” CANDACE BUCKNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Champions League final: Third straight title on the line for Real Madrid against Liverpool on Saturday (2:45 p.m., Fox)

Terps women, men looking to repeat together NCAA LACROSSE The day after they won the national championship last season at Gillette Stadium, Megan Whittle and her Maryland women’s lacrosse teammates watched anxiously while their male counterparts played for the NCAA title at the same venue. When the clock reached 0:00 and Maryland had secured a 9-6 victory over Ohio State for its first national championship since 1975, Whittle was overjoyed, perhaps even more so than when she had celebrated the women’s third title in four years. “Everything kind of culminated in this huge moment for the 2017 Terps, and it was just so exciting,” she said. The teams head into this weekend’s NCAA tournament semifinals within reach of the rarest of double doubles, seeking to become what is believed to be the first pair of teams from a Power Five conference to win consecutive national championships in any sport. The Maryland women will face No. 4 Boston College (21-1) on Friday night in Stony Brook, N.Y. The top-seeded men (14-3) will play No. 4 Duke (15-3) on Saturday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, marking the Terrapins’ seventh national semifinals berth in eight years. “I think it’s just really great the dynasties of programs that Maryland has for both men and women,” Whittle said. “It’s great momentum going into the Final Four.” GENE WANG (TWP)

‘Ibiza’ Can you believe they thought those hairstyles looked good when they were young?

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Rich in character: ‘Solo’s’ Han earns every last wupiupi “Solo: A Star Wars Story” doesn’t need to exist. But there are lots of things in the world that don’t need to exist but still make life more pleasurable. We don’t need Skittles, for example. Fuzzy socks. Wine, though it would be a shame to just let those grapes stay on the vine, doing nothing but sucking up sunshine. “Solo” is the Skittles of movies. To recap the plot in the most spoiler-free way (I will not, for example, reveal that Han and Luke actually went to the same summer camp as kids), young Han (Alden Ehrenreich) is a slave on the planet Corellia, ruled by the evil Lady Proxima (“Proxima”

FX renews “Baskets” for Season 4

must be the space word for “a not particularly impressive CGI/puppet thing”). He breaks out and eventually joins a gang of outlaws led by Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson, gruff and growling) to make one big score so he can buy his own ship (the Millennium Falcon). It must be tough to write a story that’s all backstory; the stakes are relatively low. We know the main characters are in no danger, so it stands to reason the minor ones are. We know how fast Han’s going to make it through the Kessel Run. Most audience members are dedicating part of their brain for allusions to the future movies that already came out in the past. “Solo” exists to answer one question: Why is the Han Solo we already know

the way he is? And we get our answer. It’s all about the money. We know Han is an outlaw, a Rhett Butler-style smuggler without the racism. Smugglers typically smuggle for the money that smuggling brings. A consequence of that is that by working outside of the economy, they punch holes in it. The Empire-based economic system relies on exploitation; that was touched on by the casino scene in December’s “The Last Jedi” and is further explored here. This system, like so many others — be they private, governmental or space-based — centers on the tenet that if you have jobs you don’t want to do yourself, you find a group of people who can’t fight back or who failed in trying and make them do

‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ (PG-13, 143 min.)

DIRECTOR: Ron Howard STARS: Alden Ehrenreich, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke IN A NUTSHELL: It’s an even longer time ago in a galaxy far, far away for this story of young Han Solo and his early, life-altering space adventures.

the jobs. As a former child slave, Han doesn’t like that. When we first met Han in 1977’s original “Star Wars” story, he made it very clear what his priority is: money. But here’s the thing — his money is earned honestly, if not always legally. We’re not sure what got him in trouble with Jabba the Hutt, but I think we can all rest assured that it wasn’t stealing anything from anyone who wasn’t already rich. And in the Empire, you only get rich by standing on the skulls of people who aren’t. The wealth of the powerful isn’t earned, it’s taken. Han may not be rich, but what money he does have he earns through real, risky work that he does himself. That’s the ideal that “Solo” sets up. We see Han develop the two rules that define him: He wants to get paid, and he will not exploit others to do that. There is no shame in the first, and there is real heroism in the second. In the end, Han works hard for the money — and he’s going to do what’s right. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

Netflix’s European road trip comedy starring Gillian Jacobs, Vanessa Bayer and Phoebe Robinson, “Ibiza” has a loose, natural rhythm that easily surpasses its cliche framework. And the film doesn’t feel like it’s stretching to stitch together a few memorable set pieces. It works best when the three are just in a hotel room or the back seat of a cab, because the chemistry among the trio is earnestly winning. JAKE COYLE (AP)

‘On Chesil Beach’ R, 110 min.

Set on the wedding night of two Oxford grads, Florence (Saoirse Ronan) and Edward (Billy Howle), ”On Chesil Beach” is a fragile and, at times, frustrating thing. Is the film a commentary on life at the dawn of the 1960s? An indictment of an educational system that ignores sex to its peril? It feels like both of those things, and neither. A director and the hunt for the holy FILM “We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4). “First Reformed” is a study of what happens when a minister takes that Bible verse a bit too far. The film, from veteran writerdirector Paul Schrader (who wrote the screenplays for “The Last Temptation of Christ” and “Taxi Driver,” among many others), is about Reverend Toller (Ethan Hawke), a minister with a drinking problem who presides over a church that has more and more room in the pews every Sunday and echoes in silence the rest of the week. When a parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks him to counsel her husband, an obsessive environmental activist, Reverend Toller finds himself spurred to action, to the point where his calling begins to overwhelm his life and his faith. “It justifies his suffering. He has despair — ‘sickness unto death,’ as Kierkegaard talks about — and he’s trying to handle

that,” Schrader says. “He has the liturgy, he has the booze, and they don’t quite justify the suffering. But Schrader once he gets this cause …” Toller’s newfound obsession begins to put him at odds with the church down the street from First Reformed, the glitzy (and growing) Abundant Life church, which has replaced historical rites with flashy television screens and modern music. Though Schrader sees a contrast between “devotionally driven church and entertainment-driven church,” he thinks the two are not as different as they may seem. “The moment you have a church, even though it begins as a group of believers, very quickly it starts to take on the qualities of an organization,” says Schrader, who was raised in a strict Calvinist household (he didn’t see a movie until he was 17, as the church frowned on them). “You have membership, you have rules, you have dues, you have uniforms. And the needs of an organization are not necessarily the same needs as those of human souls.” Though “First Reformed” is

about a Christian man, deals with Christian issues and takes place largely in a Christian world, Schrader does not define it as a “Christian film” in the sense of how the term is commonly used. “Most faith-based films are no different than Hollywood melodramas, with absolutely the same formula. Putting Jesus in them

doesn’t make them spiritual,” he says. “You can’t hand-hold the viewer into spirituality. Most faith-based films do just that — they take you by the hand, they say, ‘Here you are; you don’t have to do anything.’ You have to move away from those melodramatic tricks in order to get a viewer in the presence of the holy.” “First Reformed” falls solidly in the “be still and know that I am God” camps of religion and filmmaking, with a slow, quiet pace and an understated technique. “I believe that the holy resides inside us and the process of meditation,” Schrader says. “If you’re quiet enough and wait long enough, you come into contact with it.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

Regina King to lead ‘Watchmen’

Regina King has been cast in the lead role for HBO’s “Watchmen” pilot, Variety reported Wednesday. Don Johnson, Tim Blake Nelson and Louis Gossett Jr. also reportedly will appear in the show. Co-creator Damon Lindelof, the executive producer behind “Lost” and “The Leftovers,” wrote in an open letter earlier this week that the story will be “remixed” and not a straightforward adaptation of the iconic graphic novel. #METOO Actor Morgan Freeman apologized Thursday to anyone who may have felt “uncomfortable or disrespected” by his behavior, after CNN reported that eight women have accused the A-list actor of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior. “Anyone who knows me or has worked with me knows I am not someone who would intentionally offend or knowingly make anyone feel uneasy,” Freeman, 80, said in a statement. “I apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable or disrespected — that was never my intent.” The CNN report includes the account of a production assistant on the 2017 film “Going in Style,” who said the actor repeatedly tried to lift up her skirt and asked if she was wearing underwear. She said that Freeman subjected her to unwanted touching and comments on a near-daily basis on the film. Several women alleged that he made frequent comments about their bodies, or would stare at them in ways that made them feel uncomfortable. CNN spoke to 16 people about Freeman; eight said they experienced inappropriate behavior, and eight said they had witnessed such conduct. The report also cited accounts by three entertainment reporters of inappropriate remarks they allege Freeman made at press junkets. JOCELYN NOVECK (AP)

SUMMARY: Because we all needed another movie with a ton of freakishly realistic CGI, “Mowgli picks up where one of the many iterations of “The Jungle Book left off. The little boy who survived the jungle and ended up in a village must now survive the people who are a little freaked out by a kid who grew up in the jungle. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: In the remake of a (very good) 1973 film, Charlie Hunnam plays a man nicknamed “Papillon for his butterfly tattoo. Because guys with tattoos always get into trouble, he’s framed for murder and sent to a prison that is not exactly the Ritz. Or the Motel 6. Or one of those creepy abandoned-looking hotels you see on the interstate. K.P.K.

“The fact that Asian girls in media can’t be rebellious or different without a streak of (purple) color in their hair pisses me off to no end.”

GENERAL REGISTRATION Presented by General Dynamics

@HEARTMUSH, tweeting about the “Asian Character Hair Streak,” a cinematic trope recently scrutinized on social media. The theory posits that Western media, to set “rebellious” East Asian characters apart from their equally stereotypical demure counterparts, have female characters dye some of their hair. @heartmush noted that the need for such differentiation is racist. Some examples were Yukio (pictured) from “Deadpool 2,” Knives from “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” and GoGo Tomago from “Big Hero 6.”

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You will not be able to avoid all criticism today, but that which does come your way will prove valuable as you hone your latest plan. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Fine-tuning any and all ideas will be necessary today before you share them with the powers-that-be. Don’t leave anything to chance. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may find yourself in a situation today not unlike one you had to extricate yourself from only a few days ago. Ask yourself why. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) What was once only a suggestion is now likely to be put to you as an imperative — and one that you’re not going to want to ignore.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You can capitalize on an error made by another — but you don’t want to be a bad winner, certainly. You’ll have a chance to share gains. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Jason so sorry that his words got printed

This is what exes get for staying friends Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield were spotted at dinner on Tuesday in New York looking “very much like a couple,” sources told Page Six. The two dated for three years until 2015. Since then, they have said that they still love each other. Garfield told E! News in October that he is one of Stone’s biggest fans. Stone was last rumored to be dating “Saturday Night Live” director Dave McCary.

Jason Bateman apologized Thursday for comments he made in defense of “Arrested Development” co-star Jeffrey Tambor, who has been accused of harassment on the show’s set. Bateman tweeted that it seemed like he was “condoning yelling at work,” and that he’s “incredibly embarrassed.” Bateman was reacting to a cast interview in The New York Times in which actress Jessica Walter alleged Tambor verbally harassed her on set. In the interview, Bateman said that “this is a family and families … have love, laughter, arguments.” Co-star Tony Hale, who was part of The Times’ interview, also tweeted Thursday that he had apologized to Walter. Actress DomiNque Perry, an actress on HBO’s “Insecure,” welcomed a baby girl, Zen, this week, and she has not revealed the child’s father, People reports. Multiple internet outlets have speculated that the father is Sarunas Jackson, her “Insecure” costar. Jackson tweeted a photo of the baby Tuesday, but neither Perry nor Jackson has confirmed the rumors.

Five months after announcing their relationship on Instagram, Shailene Woodley and her rugby player boyfriend Ben Volavola made their red carpet debut Wednesday at the premiere of Woodley’s film “Adrift” in Los Angeles. According to People magazine, Woodley and Volavola, an Australian-born Fijian who plays for French team the Union Bordeaux Begles, met in Fiji while she was filming “Adrift.” (EXPRESS)

Gwyneth Paltrow explained to Howard Stern on his SiriusXM radio show Wednesday that she was “trying to work stuff out” when she dated Ben Affleck. The pair were together on and off from 1997 to 2000. Paltrow told Stern it was like “you’re trying to heal certain stuff from your childhood, and he was very much a lesson in that way.”

stanley cup final

Caps boast the statistical edge Based on the advanced analytics used by The Washington Post’s Fancy Stats blog, the Capitals beat the Golden Knights to win the Stanley Cup in 61 percent of simulations. Washington wins in six games in 20 percent of those simulations, making it the most likely outcome. Here’s a breakdown of why the numbers favor the Caps. (THE WASHINGTON POST/EXPRESS)

Matt Niskanen and Dmitry Orlov, Washington’s top defensive pairing, lead a group of blue-liners that excel at limiting high-danger shot attempts (in the slot and the crease). Washington is plus-15 with Brooks Orpik on the ice, the best rating of anyone in the playoffs.

Braden Holtby was benched for the first two games of the first round, but when he reclaimed his job he settled down well, saving 447 of 484 shots faced (.924 save percentage) in the postseason. Facing elimination in his past two games, he posted two shutouts.

The Caps are scoring 11.3 goals per 60 minutes of power-play time in the playoffs, almost double that of Vegas (6.3). John Carlson leads all skaters in the Cup finals in power-play points (10). Ovechkin, Kuznetsov, T.J. Oshie, and Nicklas Backstrom have nine PP points.

CAPITALS The top line of Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Tom Wilson has outscored opponents 13 to 8 in the playoffs. Secondary scoring has been huge, with 32 goals and 42 assists coming away from the top line. Non-top line skaters from Vegas had 19 goals and 29 assists.

William Karlsson had 43 goals this season, No. 3 in the NHL, and has six goals and seven assists in 15 playoff games. Jonathan Marchessault leads the team with 18 playoff points, and Reilly Smith has 16. As a trio, Vegas’ top line has outscored opponents 10 to 4.

Vegas’ top pair, Nate Schmidt and Brayden McNabb, allow 11.3 highdanger shots per 60 minutes of five-on-five play compared to 9.2 for Niskanen and Orlov. At 6 feet 4, McNabb is willing to throw his body around. His 64 hits are fourth-most in the playoffs, behind three Caps.

Marc-Andre Fleury, 33, won three championships with the Penguins, including the past two years. In these playoffs, he’s 12-3 with a .947 save percentage and four shutouts — two more than anyone else. He’s the favorite to win the Conn Smythe Trophy (playoff MVP).

Vegas has killed off penalties 82.5 percent of the time, the fourthbest rate in the playoffs. The Caps’ PK rate is just 75.4 percent. But Vegas’ leading power-play scorer, Jonathan Marchessault, has just six PP points. Vegas’ PP percentage (17.6) ranks 10th in the playoffs.

PRESEASON LONG SHOT

The preseason odds that the Westgate Sportsbook at one point gave Vegas to win the Stanley Cup this year, setting up what could be massive losses for casinos in the home of the first-year hockey franchise. Johnny Avello, an executive at the Wynn Las Vegas, told Tribune Media that if the Golden Knights beat the Capitals for the championship, it could cost the state of Nevada a collective $5 million. The Westgate reportedly took only 13 bets, and none for more than $20, when the odds were 500-1. Vegas is only the second team to appear in the Stanley Cup Final in its inaugural season, joining the 1968 St. Louis Blues. (EXPRESS) Game 4: June 4 in D.C. (8, NBC)

NHL PLAYOFFS At each bump in the road this postseason, as the Capitals faced deficits and injuries and elimination games, coach Barry Trotz has given reminders of how his team’s psyche has shifted. His material, how the Caps are letting go of pressure and living in the moment, is trite in the sports world but applicable to their tortured postseason experience. Trotz is in his 19th NHL season as a head coach. Like the Caps, this is the first time he’s been out of the second round. “We’ve learned that these are special moments, and you get a chance to live in those moments and not be afraid of them,” Trotz told reporters after the Caps forced a Game 7 with Tampa. Although he’s won three straight Metropolitan Division titles, Trotz has received no offer for a contract extension from the Caps. After the Capitals eliminated the Penguins in the second round, he told The Washington Post that he’s at peace with his career even if he never wins a Stanley Cup. “I’m not going to be defined by that,” he said. “My life is way more important than the wins and losses and games.” The best example of Trotz’s new chill was his now-viral “hot lap” in practice before Game 7 at Tampa Bay. With the season, and maybe his career, in danger, the 55-year-old tore around the rink on skates, delighting his players with an Alex Ovechkin-style knee bend. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)
