:el[h" D$>$ They don’t like identity politics and aren’t crazy about the word “feminist.” But a lot of conservative women here can’t help but rejoice that they may have a couple of tough-talking, teadrinking, devoted mothers to choose from in the Republican primary. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota is on the verge of announcing her intentions, and former vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is contemplating a bid for president. If either runs, it would be the first time since Elizabeth Dole’s bid in 1999 that a viable female candidate has sought the Republican nomination for president. They have energized conservative women who four years ago were deeply uncomfortable with Hillary Rodham Clinton, but who see in Bachmann and Palin the kind of family-focused, overtly spiritual candidate whose lifestyle and values seem to mirror their own. The inclusion of Palin and Bachmann in the mix of candidates caps a blockbuster year in which women were credited with helping the GOP retake control of the House. Bachmann is not considered a front-runner for the nomination. But

Conservative women find they can relate to Bachmann, Palin

Sarah Palin, above, and Michele Bachmann, below, have conservative women rejoicing that they may have two family-focused and overtly Christian candidates to choose from.

FWb_d IjWdZi Xo >[h FWkb H[l[h[ Ijeho Sarah Palin insisted Sunday that history was on her side when she claimed that Paul Revere’s famous ride was intended to warn both British soldiers and Revere’s fellow colonists. “You realize that you messed up about Paul Revere, don’t you?” “Fox News Sunday” anchor Chris Wallace asked Palin. “I didn’t mess up,” Palin said. “Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there. That, hey, you’re not going to succeed. ... You are not going to beat our own well-armed persons, individual, private militia that we have. He did warn the British.” (AP)

she has amassed a significant war chest — about $3 million as of March 31 — that virtually assures she will have staying power leading up to the primaries next spring. Palin, though, would no doubt take over the spotlight if she decided to jump into the race. She became a model for a new kind of conservative woman leader when she stormed onto the national stage in 2008, with her unapologetic attitude and an infant on her hip. Palin and Bachmann share key characteristics, including their popularity in tea party circles, their overtly Christian rhetoric and their sharp tongues. They also share a groomed attractiveness that Republican voters like, says Kellyanne Conway, a GOP pollster, because it suggests that the candidates are proud of their femininity. “They look like the homecoming queens, but they talk like Ronald Reagan. Who wouldn’t want that combination?” Conway said. SANDHYA SOMASHEKHAR (THE WASHINGTON POST )

They’re not cures, but two novel drugs produced unprecedented gains in survival in separate studies of people with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, doctors reported Sunday. In one study, an experimental drug showed so much benefit so quickly in people with advanced disease that those getting a comparison drug were allowed to switch after just a few months. The drug, vemurafenib, targets a gene mutation found in about half of all melanomas. The drug is being developed by Genentech and Plexxikon Inc.. The second study tested Bris-

The new studies were presented Sunday in Chicago and published online by the New England Journal of Medicine. “This is really an unprecedented time of celebration for our patients,” said Dr. Lynn Schuchter, of the University of Pennsylvania’s Abramson Cancer Center. The new drugs are not by themselves cures, but “the future is going to be to build upon the success” by testing combinations of these newer drugs, she said. Melanoma is on the rise, and only two drugs had been approved to treat it, with limited effectiveness, until Yervoy, an immunesystem therapy, won approval in March. MARILYNN MARCHIONE (AP)

Sprouts Suspected in Outbreak Officials investigate farm in Germany over E. coli flare-up >WcXkh]" =[hcWdo The terrifying E. coli outbreak in Europe appears to have been caused by vegetable sprouts grown in Germany, an agriculture official said Sunday as the toll climbed to at least 22 dead and more than 2,200 sickened. Preliminary tests found that bean sprouts and other sprout varieties from an organic farm in the Uelzen area, between Hamburg and Hannover, could be connected to infected people in five German states, Lower Saxony Agriculture Minister Gert Lindemann said. “There were more and more indications in the last few hours that put the focus on this farm,” Lindemann said.

Ifhekj_d] :Wd][h Sprouts have been implicated in previous E. coli outbreaks, particularly one in 1996 in Japan, where tainted radish sprouts killed 12 people and reportedly sickened more than 12,000 others. E. coli can be found in feces and can spread to produce through sloppy bathroom habits among farm workers and through animal waste in fields and irrigation water. As for how the European sprouts became contaminated, a German official noted that they are grown with steam at 100 F in barrels, an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply. It is possible that the water had been contaminated. Still, the farm had not used any manure, which can cause E. coli outbreaks, he said. (AP)

Definitive test results should be available Monday, he said. Many restaurants involved in the outbreak had received deliveries of the sprouts, which are often used in salads, Lindemann spokesman Gert Hahne said. As officials tried to pinpoint the source of the unusually lethal outbreak, suspicion fell on lettuce,

cucumbers and tomatoes, perhaps from Spain. Spanish farmers complained that the accusations were having a devastating financial effect. The farm was shut down Sunday and all of its produce was recalled, including herbs, fruits, flowers and potatoes. He said 18 sprout mixtures from the farm were under suspicion,

including sprouts of mung beans, broccoli, and radishes. The outbreak has been blamed on a highly aggressive, “super-toxic” strain of E. coli. Ten other European nations and the U.S. have also reported victims. The crisis is the deadliest known E. coli outbreak in modern history, and more than 627 people have developed a rare, serious complication that can cause kidney failure. (AP)

There are myriad ways to keep rental car costs down if you know where to look for deals and how to avoid extra fees.

Five ways to save on car rentals in time for summer driving season

Cejeh_iji" ijWhj oekh [d]_d[i0 Summer driving season has begun. You just may need to put in a little extra effort this year to keep it from being a budget-buster. It’s not surprising that many families are rethinking their vacation plans and driving less as gasoline prices linger within striking distance of $4 a gallon. But for those who are planning to rent a car this summer, there are plenty of ways to keep costs down by going beyond comparison shopping and seeking out small fuel-efficient cars. DAV E CARPENTER (AP)

A PenFed Mortgage.

Unpredictably high gas prices may tempt you to consider the rental car company’s offer to prepay for a whole tank of gas. Think twice. Yes, it’s convenient and the prices they offer generally will be less than the current price at the pumps. But many drivers end up paying more in the end because they don’t use the full amount they paid for in advance. Gas prices have been coming down a bit recently from their peaks, providing another reason to hold off.

Joining a rental car agency’s loyalty program can give you access to special deals and promotions, and save you time. It will speed you through lines or allow you to skip them altogether, sometimes enabling you to go straight to the car. Consider it even if you’re not a frequent traveler, just a once-a-year vacation renter, advises Greg McBride, senior financial analyst for Bankrate.com.

Just be sure to return the car with a full tank or you can be socked with even higher costs. Take note of gas stations near the airport or wherever you’ll be returning the car so you can refuel. The American Automobile Association (Aaa. com) has an app that shows nearby gas station prices.

I[[a Edb_d[ E\\[hi Sites such as Rentalcarmomma. com, Rentalcars.com, Rentalcodes.com and Rentalcarchoices. com have coupons that provide discounts of 5 percent or 10 percent off daily car rentals; 10 percent to 20 percent off weekly rentals; or a third day free when renting for

two weekend days. Some coupons can be applied to already discounted prices. If you’ll be relying on a rental agency, check to see whether it has a presence on Facebook or Twitter for promotional offers.

7le_Z Kdd[Y[iiWho ?dikhWdY[ Drivers with auto insurance probably have adequate coverage — if not through their policy, then through the credit card they’re charging the rental tab to. If you’re already an insured driver, you can resist the inevitable pitch at the rental counter that’s designed to plant enough doubt to scare you into buying their coverage. Call your auto insurer and credit card issuer and ask whether you are covered for collisions and liability.

:edÊj Ijef I^eff_d] Book your rental car in advance to ensure you get the vehicle type you want at a decent price. But as the travel date approaches continue to shop on rental agencies’ websites and those of travel sites such as Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity. If they have a lot of cars and no one’s renting the price will come down as the date nears. DAVE CARPENTER (AP)

It ‘Needed to Happen’ Fighting may ease with Saleh gone, but Yemen’s future remains uncertain

?cc_d[dj :Wd][hi Yemen has been inching closer to economic collapse, and with the sudden departure of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, several destabilizing factors further threaten the small Gulf nation.

7b#GW[ZW The departure of Yemen’s battlewounded president for treatment in Saudi Arabia set off wild street celebrations Sunday in the capital where crowds danced, sang and slaughtered cows in hopes that this spelled a victorious end to a more than three-month campaign to oust their leader. Behind the festive atmosphere, many feared Ali Abdullah Saleh, a masterful politician who has led for nearly 33 years, will return — or leave the country in ruins if he can’t. Hanging in the balance was a country that even before the latest tumult was beset by deep poverty, tribal conflict and violence by an active al-Qaeda franchise with international reach. Saleh, who was taken to a military hospital in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, underwent surgery to remove wood that splintered from a mosque pulpit when his compound was hit by rockets on Friday, medical officials said. The stunning rocket attack, which the government first blamed on tribal fighters who in recent weeks turned against the president and later on alQaeda, killed 11 bodyguards and seriously injured five senior officials worshipping alongside Saleh. While Saleh is away, Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi is acting as temporary head of state, said the deputy information minister, Abdu al-Janadi. “Saleh will come back. Saleh is in good health, and he may give up the authority one day, but it has to be in a constitutional way,” al-Janadi said. “Calm has returned. Coups have failed.” Experts questioned whether a return is possible. Saleh’s injuries and his treatment abroad provide him with what could turn out to be a face-sav-

Protesters in San‘a, Yemen, cheer Sunday for the departure of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who left for medical treatment in Saudi Arabia.

ing solution to exit power. “This is exactly what needed to happen,” said Christopher Boucek, a Yemen expert with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “He needed to leave in order to get past this political deadlock that has been cursing Yemen for the past few months.” His sudden departure raised many

questions, including whether his Saudi hosts would bless his return. The Saudis have backed Saleh and cooperated over the years in confronting alQaeda and other threats, but they are now among those pressing him resign. Saudi Arabia is eager to contain the unrest on its doorstep. Yemen’s unrest began as a peaceful movement that the government

at times used brutal force to try to suppress, killing at least 166 people, according to Human Rights Watch. It transformed in the past two weeks into armed conflict after the president’s forces attacked the home of a key tribal leader. The fighting turned the streets of San‘a into a war zone. In an attempt to cool the situation, the vice president offered to pull regime forces back from where they’ve battled fighters loyal to Sheik Sadeq al-Ahmar, who heads Yemen’s most powerful tribal confederation. Al-Ahmar said in a statement he agreed to the deal, which requires his forces to leave the streets they seized starting Monday. (AP)

FWj^ e\ :[j[hc_dWj_ed Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh was born into a tribe allied with the al-Ahmar clan, which then ruled a tribal confederacy in northern Yemen. His website gives his birth date as March 21, 1946, but many in Yemen say he was born four years earlier. Regardless, Saleh caught the eye of North Yemen’s president, Ahmed bin Hussein al-Ghashmi, who appointed him military chief in Taiz. A bomb killed al-Ghashmi in June 1978, and soon after, Saleh was president and head of the armed forces of North Yemen. Among his first acts was to order the execution of 30 officers convicted of conspiring to kill al-Ghashmi. In 1990, Saleh made his boldest political move: negotiating unity with the Marxist south. On May 22, 1990, he raised the flag of the Republic of Yemen. He is believed to have been grooming his son Ahmed to succeed him, one of the reasons that opposition fanned against him. (AP)

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has an estimated 300 hard-core members hiding in Yemen’s mountains, plotting attacks on targets in Europe and the U.S. while enjoying the protection of tribal chiefs at odds with President Ali Abdullah Saleh. Militants would likely benefit from more chaos in Yemen, gaining more freedom to plot attacks without being disrupted by Saleh’s U.S.-trained counterterrorism forces.

MWdj[Z CWd Yemen is home to U.S.born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who the U.S. has put on a kill-or-capture list. Washington says he is a top al-Qaeda operative and inspired attacks on the U.S., including the 2009 shooting at a military base in Fort Hood, Texas, that killed 13 people.

9_l_b MWh Yemen has a secessionist movement in the south that has steadily gained strength in recent years, raising the specter of the nation’s breaking into two parts or a civil war to prevent that from happening. The north is home to rebellious Shiites who the government insists are backed by Iran. (AP)

More than three decades ago, Lance Wyman designed the Metro map’s iconic interlocking colored lines, which have become the symbol of the transit system for millions of Washington commuters and tourists. Now he’s been hired to give it a makeover. It is a challenge for the 73-yearold graphic designer. He has to find a way to add the new rail line to Dulles International Airport and integrate other changes to the map without ruining the classic, clean look. “I get nervous,” Wyman said when he considered everything he’s been asked to accomplish. “We did that original one almost 40 years ago. It is amazing that it stuck.” In the world of graphic arts, Wyman is a rock star. He made his reputation after he designed the bold typeface and geometric logo for the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. He’s also made his mark on Washington, having done designs for many wellknown spots. He created icons for museums and monuments in D.C. that were once used on map kiosks and banners on the Mall. His signs to identify animals still adorn the elephant, ape and small-mammal house at the National Zoo. A logo for the old Walter E. Washington Convention Center was his,

Wyman faces a list of challenges. He has to add the new rail line to Dulles, include trains along the Red Line that end at Grosvenor, squeeze in a future split of the Blue Line and deal with some sta-

tion names that have become long and cumbersome. Metro officials expect to present Wyman’s new map design to the public this fall. Wyman said he wants to make sure the Metro map is usable in every shape and form. The map has to work on mobile devices and online, as well as in poster-size displays at Metro stations. “The map has spirit,” he said. “It has to hang together like a good piece of music. It’s got life, a beat with colors and station stops. There’s a sense of rhythm. It has a solidity to it that’s unique to Washington. I don’t want to lose the good music.” D A N A H E D G P E T H (THE WASHINGTON POST )

D.C. Set for New Parking Meters MWi^_d]jed The D.C. Department of Transportation has selected ParkMobile to provide its new pay-by-phone parking meter system. Beginning in July, D.C. plans to launch a new citywide program with the company to allow drivers to use their mobile phones to pay for parking at metered spaces.

The amount Sulaimon Brown claims he was paid via money orders by a consultant to then-candidate Vincent C. Gray to sully then-Mayor Adrian Fenty in last year’s election.

A competitor in a pilot program for the service, Verrus Mobile Technologies, discontinued its service this week. ParkMobile already provides pay-by-phone service near Georgetown Hospital, in Foggy Bottom and around Nationals Park. Once the program expands citywide, there will be a fee for each transaction. Users will be charged an additional 30 to 35 cents per transaction. The fee goes to ParkMobile to make the service free for the city. (AP)

Grinding along the baseline, using every inch of his wingspan to extend points, whipping fearsome forehands this way and that, Nadal flummoxed Federer yet again Sunday in a riveting, highlight-filled match, beating him 7-5, 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-1 for a recordtying sixth French Open championship and 10th major title overall. “He plays better against the better ones, and that’s what he showed today,” said Federer, owner of 16 Grand Slam trophies. “He’s a great champion, on clay, especially.”

There’s no question that Nadal is as good as it gets in Paris — 45-1 for his career, and the same number of titles there as Bjorn Borg — but the Spaniard already also has shown that he is much more than the king of clay. And Sunday’s victory only will raise more questions about whether Federer truly deserves to be called the “greatest of all time” if he is not even the “greatest of right now.” Nadal leads their head-to-head series 17-8. That includes a 6-2 advantage in Grand Slam finals and a 5-0 edge at the French Open (in the 2005 semifinals, and the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2011 finals). He’s rapidly gaining on Federer. Nadal turned 25 Friday, making him about six months younger than Federer was when the Swiss star collected his 10th major title. This was the first Grand Slam final contested by two men who already completed career Grand Slams — at least one title from each major tournament — and Nadal and Federer put on a worthy show, more than 3½ hours chock-full of lengthy exchanges, brilliant defense, sublime shotmaking, and some dizzying shifts of momentum. “A big occasion,” said the thirdseeded Federer, who is 14-1 in Grand Slam finals against any other opponent. “I was aware of it.” (AP)

Deep Draft Bodes Well for the Nationals 6th pick offers team a shot at one of the best available players J^[ DWj_edWbi The Nationals’ position in the draft has changed this season, but their luck has not. For the past two years, they owned the first pick in the draft, two seasons that happened to bring Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper. Two once-in-a-generation talents fell into their possession in consecutive seasons. “It’s hard to have a more impactful draft than with those specific No. 1 picks,” General Manager Mike Rizzo said. On Monday night, the draft will start at 7 p.m. and the Nationals, for the first time since 2008, will wait. They will pick sixth, with two more picks at 23 and 34, compensation for losing Adam Dunn in free agency. And, wouldn’t you know it, this is

M[[a[dZ H[m_dZ

a perfect season to pick sixth with two additional early choices. The consensus around baseball suggests this year’s draft is deep, particularly with hard-throwing pitchers. Rizzo called it the best draft he’s seen in at least six years. Their compensatory picks, late in the first round and the first pick of the “sandwich” round, could produce a quality of player typically taken in the middle of the first round. The general consensus also brings more good news for the Nationals. There are six players regarded as the elite tier, with little gap in talent between them. The Nationals, then, are in position to choose one of the best players in the country with their first choice. “There’s six clear-cut top guys in this draft,” said Jim Callis, a draft expert at Baseball America. “In a lot of ways, I think it’s a really easy decision for the Nationals. Whoever is left is their pick. I don’t think

>[WZ e\ j^[ CB8 :hW\j 9bWii UCLA pitchers Gerrit Cole, left, and Trevor Bauer head a draft class heavy on college-pitching prospects. Cole is considered the likely No. 1 overall pick, and Bauer draws comparisons to Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum. Virginia ace Danny Hultzen, a former star at St. Albans in D.C., throws a fastball in the low to mid-90s and has good movement on his off-speed pitches. The junior showed no interest in going pro out of high school but should be ready now. Rice third baseman Anthony Rendon was the national freshman of the year two years ago and hit .327 with 20 doubles and six homers this year. But a right shoulder strain has limited him to DH duties for much of this season. Oklahoma high school pitcher Dylan Bundy may have the best arm of any hurler in the draft, but he has also hinted it will take a Stephen Strasburg-esque signing bonus to lure him away from the college game. Kansas high school outfielder Bubba Starling might be the best athlete in the draft, a star in basketball and football, too. He has super agent Scott Boras’ backing and a scholarship offer to play quarterback at Nebraska. (AP/ T WP)

there’s a ton separating those six. They theoretically could get the best player in the draft.” As Rizzo built a reputation as a savvy scouting director with the Arizona Diamondbacks, he showed a strong preference for college pitching. This draft is rife with quality college pitchers, but the breakdown of the draft may force the Nationals to look elsewhere, perhaps at high school star Bubba Starling. Over the years, one of the last things you’d see on the youthobsessed MTV was a parent. Now moms and dads aren't unusual sights, even on the twin totems to wild behavior and its consequences — “Jersey Shore” and “Teen Mom” — that are key to the network’s latest resurgence. A key moment for MTV came at the 2009 Video Music Awards when Kanye West questioned Taylor Swift’s award-worthiness onstage, an incident that exploded through social media. MTV had been grappling with how to deal with social media and came to see it as a means rather than an end: Social media can be a boon if it has the content people want to talk about. (AP)

lem with parents’ being an active part of their lives and expect their presence on television. Understanding such generational nuances is crucial to MTV, which has the brutal task of reinventing itself every five or six years to appeal to a new group of 12- to 24-year-olds. Their viewers eventually grow up. MTV never can. The latest reinvention has brought MTV its best ratings in five years. The third season of “Jersey Shore” was the network’s top-rated show ever, and the second season of “Teen Mom” similarly zoomed up the charts. The challenge now is figuring out how to build on that

success and know when to be ready for the next reinvention. This spring, MTV has steered in a surprisingly traditional direction by debuting a remake of the “Teen Wolf” series on Sunday and bringing back “Beavis and Butthead” later this year. It has also created its own weight-loss series for teens and plans to launch two “Jersey Shore” spin-offs. MTV viewers “want more from us,” says Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music/Films/Logo Group. “They expect more.” Toffler, who has been at MTV since 1986, and newly appointed network president Stephen Friedman, who’s been there since 1998, have survived MTV’s ups and downs. “When you get a little bit scared,” Toffler said, “you know something might work.” DAVID BAUDER (AP)

Whether Washington is a great restaurant town or not (and that debate is too long for this space), we do have our own annual restaurant awards: the RAMMYs, which will be given out at a gala on June 26. From now till then, the masses can sample cocktails from the five restaurants nominated for Mixology/Beverage Program of the Year — and whenever 8o <_edW you order one, you can PkXb_d fill out a card to be entered in a drawing to win tickets to the gala. The cocktails hail from Bourbon Steak (2800 Pennsylvania Ave. NW), Church Key (1337 14th St. NW), Estadio (1520 14th St. NW), Tabard Inn (1739 N St. NW) and Founding Farmers (1924 Pennsylvania Ave. NW). Founding Farmers’ nominee has an unwieldy name — Citros Gengibre ($12) — but it’s the perfect summer cocktail. Fruity summer drinks are usually a mash of various juices and hard liquor that just taste like sorority party jungle juice, but bartender Jon Arroyo has mixed ginger beer with grapefruit bitters, lemon, mint and cherry brandy for a drink with defined flavors. Oh, and tequila. Oh, yes, there is tequila. Church Key’s drink is vastly different but similarly summery: The Alewife ($11) is a miraculous concoction that mimics the taste of Belgian beer using only honey, egg white, lemon, gin and a house-made tincture of coriander, black pepper and citrus. The winner of the complimentary RAMMY tickets will be chosen on June 20.

Play It Again

Don’t Mess With POTUS

The Shakespeare Theatre may be named after the most famous playwright who ever lived, but it has a soft spot for the lesser-known playwrights of history, too. Thus the Rediscovery Reading series, where artistic director Michael Kahn chooses plays nobody’s ever heard of for new, if one-night-only, life. Tonight’s selection: “Don’t Play With Love” by Alfred de Musset, who is mostly famous for having an affair with writer George Sand. Shakespeare Theatre, 450 7th St. NW, Mon., 7:30 p.m., free, reservations required; 202-547-1122, Shakespearetheatre.org. (Gallery Place)

Harrison Ford pioneered the idea of the archaeologist superhero, but it’s perhaps even more impressive that he made the president-superhero believable. Ford’s portrayal of a president saving his family from hijackers in “Air Force One” is pretty badass — but in real life, we’ll take the wonks we have, thanks. The film will screen outdoors in Crystal City tonight. 1851 S. Bell St., Arlington; Mon., sunset, free; Crystalcity.org. (Crystal City)

“Fischer” does a great job of exploring the ancient game of chess and its insular society of world-class champions. It also recalls the emphasis the Soviet Union put on the game as part of its propaganda efforts. The film’s title has more than a double meaning, spending its final half documenting Fischer’s descent into paranoia, his renunciation of his U.S. citizenship, his celebration of the 9/11 attacks and his obsessive

But making sense of his madness, or anyone’s mental illness, remains beyond the powers of any film, even a movie as spellbinding as “Bobby Fischer Against the World.” KEVIN MCDONOUGH (UNITED FEA-

HARRY BENSON/COURTESY OF HBO

Genius, fame and paranoia loom large in the thoughtful and entirely captivating documentary “Bobby Fischer A ga i nst t he World” (9 p.m., HBO). A brilliant and focused child of a single mother with a politically radical background, Brooklynborn Bobby Fischer would seem an unlikely candidate for international fame. His single-minded dedication to the game of chess began early, and by age 8 Fischer was beating much older players, sometimes challenging dozens of them at a time. The film offers a wealth of footage of the young Fischer, a curiosity for the media long before his defeat of Russian chess master Boris Spassky at the 1972 championship made him a worldwide hero. >8E

THE MAIN EVENT: On June 21, they’ll wed in Jamaica with just two guests: Amy’s sister and her husband. The reception will take place a few weeks later in upstate New York. HOW THEY MET: In their high school cafeteria when they were both 15. “I gave her lunch money, and she ate half my chicken sandwich anyways,” Chris says. FIRST DATE: They first hung out solo to do English homework. For their first date, they saw the 2004 rom-com “The Prince and Me.” HOW HE PROPOSED: In their living room. “I was trying to start a fight about when he would finally propose.” Then he did. “It all turned to a blur,” Amy says. THEIR SONG: Jack Johnson’s “Better Together.” Their favors, napkins and chocolates all say, “Amy & Chris Better Together.” PET NAMES: “He is ‘Huniehound’ and I am ‘SugarPup,’” Amy says. “I call her ‘Babycakes’ and she calls me ‘Jackass,’” Chris says. WHEN HE KNEW: “When I was skipping seventh period to go to guitar class with her.”

THE MAIN EVENT: June 11 at the Assateague Island National Seashore. They’ll eat blue crabs, camp oceanside and get married barefoot while their friends sit on Indian blankets. HOW THEY MET: In high school art class. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: “I thought, ‘This guy must have so many different personalities.’ He was a skater, a lacrosse player, a soccer player and an art kid. I was so curious to see what more was going on in that head.”

FIRST DATE: Taco Bell. “Nachos BellGrande, chicken, no beef, no beans,” Athena says. HOW HE PROPOSED: In bed, with Shakespeare’s sonnet 116, which begins, “Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments.” MOST-HATED CLOTHING ITEM: “His ‘grandpa pants’ — pleated olive Dockers two sizes too big.” “When I wear them, I swear I’m losing weight,” Forest says. THEIR SONG: Feist’s “Mushaboom,” to which they’ll walk down the “aisle” after they’re married. MMM, CAKE: Instead, they’re having a “Smoresgasbord” — s’moresflavored brownie pies, whoopie pies, cupcakes and s’mores. WITH INFINITE FUNDS: Athena would buy 100 giant Gypsy pillows; Forest would hire a mariachi band.

THE MAIN EVENT: June 11, on the beach in Maryland. “We are having a hospital chaplain officiate,” Jess says. “We chose her because it has to take a strong person with a huge heart to do that job.” HOW THEY MET: Lifeguard training in Falls Church. “We were paired to practice saving each other. When it was her turn, we got into an argument because I kept purposely sinking to the bottom of the pool.” FIRST DATE: Renzo says it was a bar in Georgetown. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You know which moments really count, and which are just filler — and you can help determine which is which. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Someone you face competitively on a day-to-day basis may come to you with an offer of a compromise that is actually quite attractive. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Any secret you try to keep is likely to backfire on you before you know it, so try to keep everything aboveboard. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Someone you have looked up to for some time may disappoint you before the day is out, but you mustn’t take this too personally. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You can do much to relieve tensions between parties engaged in a conflict that could otherwise escalate and become quite dangerous.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll surprise those in control by doing things in such a wildly independent manner. Don’t be irresponsible, however. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Someone in the know has his or her eye on you, and before the day is out, you can benefit in ways you may not have imagined. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You have a good reason to pick up the pace and finish not one, not two, but at least three projects simultaneously.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) Now is a good time to act decisively, even if you’re only fooling someone else into thinking that you’re being decisive. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may want to keep certain information to yourself for the time being, until you understand just how others might use it.
