A stork feeding its offspring in their nest is silhouetted against the evening sky as sun sets near Hanover, Germany, on Wednesday.

Yes, it’s a bad look to fire the guy who beat you, but so satisfying!

‘Your mom wouldn’t like it if you gave me a ticket, now, would she?’

The hot new bonus that’s only for Walmart shoppers: a big lizard

A South Dakota sheriff waited a whole minute after polls closed to fire a deputy who undid his re-election bid this week. Bon Homme County Sheriff Lenny Gramkow fired deputy sheriff Mark Maggs after Maggs defeated him by a vote of 878-331 in Tuesday’s Republican primary election. Maggs posted his time-stamped termination notice signed by Gramkow on Facebook after polls closed. Gramkow didn’t give a reason for the firing. (AP)

Trooper Michael Patterson was on patrol Friday when he pulled over Matthew Bailly in Kingwood Township, N.J. As they talked, Bailly said he’d been a police officer in Piscataway, where Patterson grew up. The trooper replied, “My name is Michael Patterson, sir. Thank you for delivering me. Bailly was on duty 27 years ago when he was called to the home of Karen Patterson, who’d gone into labor. He helped her deliver Michael. (AP)

A couple near Hemet, Calif., got a surprise with an Walmart package they received Wednesday: a bearded dragon. The large, scaly lizard — native to Australia — arrived inside the cardboard box with the bicycle that Al and Chris Brummett had ordered for their granddaughter, Riverside County Animal Services wrote on Facebook. The lizard was unharmed, and investigators are now attempting to track down its owners. (EXPRESS)

Saturday’s Capital Pride Parade in D.C.: As grand marshals of the parade, they’ll be the ones on the route “sitting in a car and trying not to melt from the heat,” Judy says. As founders of the Matthew Shepard Foundation — named for their son, who was killed in 1998 in Laramie, Wyo. — the couple have been tireless LGBT activists, focusing on anti-discrimination measures. The foundation was particularly instrumental in the 2009 passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, which broadened the definition of a hate crime. For Judy Shepard, participating in an event like Pride isn’t just a celebration; it’s an extension of the activism she’s so closely involved in. LORI MCCUE (FOR EXPRESS) So what exactly does marshaling entail? Sitting in a car! Lots of press, pictures and waving, the royal wave. I’ve been practicing. What does it mean to you to be marshaling the Pride parade? As allies, as not really members of the community, being able to participate in really fabulous, affirming events like Pride — it helps us feel like we’re still a part of Matt’s community, part of his life. It’s great to see progress,

right? It’s great to see how many folks, not just members of the community but allies, as well, turn out to celebrate the progress. But also I hope everybody understands there’s still a lot of work to do, and this should be the focus of where we are. You’ve been participating in Pride celebrations for 20 years — how would you describe the way they’ve changed? There [are] a lot more families in it now, which I love. Also, the

press treats it differently. I can remember at the beginning, Pride was all about the feather boas in the front, and nothing about the work or the families in the back. This is a way to express everything about yourself in the most positive way. I love that so many allies and friends and co-workers are so positive on the sidelines. Is there anything that makes this year’s Pride particularly important?

Richard Madaleno, the openly gay Maryland state senator who is running for governor, is airing what gay rights activists say is the nation’s first-ever political ad showing a same-sex couple kissing. The ad aired Thursday in the Washington area on the Fox News show “Fox & Friends.” It was also posted on Madaleno’s campaign website. The ad includes the Maryland Democrat talking about how he has stood up to Trump’s agenda and ends with Madaleno kissing his husband, Mark Hodge, on the lips. He then says, “Take that, Trump!” (AP)

Head of rogue unit sentenced Ex-leader of corrupt Baltimore task force gets 25 years in prison BALTIMORE A former leader of a corrupt Baltimore police unit has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. U.S. District Judge Catherine Blake handed down the punishment Thursday to 37-year-old former Gun Trace Task Force leader Sgt. Wayne Earl Jenkins. Jenkins pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges including racketeering, robbery and falsifying records. Among a long list of other crimes, he admitted to giving stolen drugs to

an associate who resold them, enriching both men. Jenkins was “putting poison into our community when he should have been protecting our community from that poison,” Judge Blake said. Jenkins’ voice choked with emotion while he stood and addressed the packed gallery before receiving his sentence. Some in the gallery cried as he spoke. “I’ve tarnished the badge,” Jenkins said through tears. He also apologized to Umar Burley, whom he was pursuing when Burley crashed into another car, killing an elderly man. Heroin was planted in Burley’s car after the crash. In Jenkins’ plea agreement, he admitted to knowing about the planted drugs.

Jenkins is the second member of the disbanded task force to be sentenced. He led another specialized unit before joining the gun task force. U.S. prosecutor Leo Wise said Jenkins ran both police units “like a criminal gang” and “the harm that he did is immeasurable.” After Blake handed down the sentence, Jenkins walked out of the court in handcuffs. In his plea agreement, Jenkins admitted to seven separate robberies that took place over a

Jenkins robbed hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash as well as drugs including cocaine and heroin from people he had detained or arrested. On Thursday, Blake also sentenced former gun task force officer Marcus Roosevelt Taylor to 18 years in prison. In May, Blake sentenced former Gun Trace Task Force leader Sgt. Thomas Allers to 15 years in prison. Allers had also been a leader of the corrupt unit and was its first former member to be sentenced. Guard claims he was told to take vehicle Va. officials deny story, say he was on drugs during alleged theft RICHMOND An Army National Guard officer charged with driving an armored personnel carrier off base while under the influence of drugs insisted Thursday he was ordered to do so as part of a training exercise and called the charges against him “completely bogus.” But a spokesman for the Virginia National Guard denied 1st Lt. Joshua Yabut’s claim. “Lt. Yabut was not authorized by the brigade commander or anyone else to drive the armored personnel carrier off Fort Pickett to any location for any reason,” spokesman A.A. “Cotton” Puryear wrote in an email. Yabut told The Associated Press he was first notified of the training exercise by his commander a week before he drove the vehicle away Tuesday evening from Fort Pickett. Yabut said he was later given the command in coded military language to conduct the exercise, which he said was aimed at gauging police response. “I didn’t want to do it, but I believed it was a lawful order,

and as a commissioned officer I was required to do so,” Yabut said. Ya b u t , 2 9, of R ich mo nd , Yabut was arrested in downtown Richmond following a two-hour police chase. He spoke to the AP by phone from a psychiatric hospital. He was taken there Wednesday after he was arraigned on charges of driving under the influence of drugs, unauthorized use of a National Guard vehicle and evading police. A state trooper who is listed as the arresting officer wrote in court documents that Yabut

had “glassy eyes” with dilated pupils, slurred speech and was “unsteady on his feet.” The armored personnel carrier, which drives on tracks like a tank, topped out at speeds of about 45 mph on its journey to the state capital. Police couldn’t stop it, so they ended up escorting it, sirens blaring, before Yabut stopped and got out near City Hall. Yabut said police shot him with a stun gun and set a dog on him before taking him into custody. “I didn’t just run in to an APC and drive it off,” Yabut said. “It was prepped. It was prepared with 60 miles of fuel and soldiers assisted with the preparation.” DENISE LAVOIE (AP)

For Kim summit, Trump says ‘it’s about attitude’

GUATEMALA

verbatim

NATIONAL SECURITY Heading into his North Korea summit with characteristic bravado, President Trump said Thursday that “attitude” is more important than preparation as he looks to negotiate an accord with Kim Jong Un to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula. Preparing to depart Washington for next week’s meeting, Trump dangled before Kim visions of normalized relations with the U.S., economic investment and even a White House visit. Characterizing the upcoming talks with the third-generation autocrat as a “friendly negotiation,” Trump said, “I really believe that Kim Jong Un wants to do something.” Trump’s comments came as he looked to reassure allies that he won’t give away the store in pursuit of a legacy-defining deal with Kim, who has long sought to cast off his pariah status on the international stage. The North has faced crippling diplomatic and economic sanctions as it has advanced development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. “I don’t think I have to prepare very much,” Trump said. “It’s about attitude. It’s about willingness to get things done.” Declaring the summit to be “much more than a photo-op,” Trump predicted “a terrific

success or a modified success” when he meets with Kim on Tuesday in Singapore. He said the talks with Kim would start a process to bring about a resolution to the nuclear issue. “I think it’s not a one-meeting deal,” he said. Asked how many days he’s willing to stay to talk with Kim, Trump said, “One, two, three, depending on what happens.” Still, Trump forecast that he’ll know very quickly whether Kim is serious about dealing with U.S. demands. “They have to de-nuke,” Trump said. “If they don’t denuclearize that will not be acceptable. And we cannot take sanctions off.” Trump met Thursday in Washington with Japanese Prime

Minister Shinzo Abe to talk about summit preparations and strategy. Abe pushed Trump to raise with Kim the issue of Japanese abductees held in North Korea. The Japanese leader is seeking to ensure that Trump’s efforts to negotiate an agreement with Kim don’t harm Japan’s interests. Trump said Abe talked about the abductees “long and hard and passionately and I will follow his wishes and we will be discussing that with North Korea absolutely.” U.S. allies in the region have expressed concern that Trump’s push to denuclearize Korea could ignore the North’s sophisticated ballistic missile and chemical weapons programs. Trump, Macron feud ahead of G-7 President fires back after French leader threatens a rare rebuke

POLITICS French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday threatened to join with other world leaders in issuing a rare rebuke of the United States at a global summit in Quebec, Canada, this weekend, drawing an immediate and sharp reply from President Trump. Macron threatened to exclude the U.S. from the joint statement issued every year at the end of the G-7 summit, part of an international pushback against Trump efforts to change trade rules. “The American President may not mind being isolated, but neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be,” Macron wrote on Twitter. “Because these 6 countries represent values, they represent an economic market which has the weight of history behind it and which is now a true international force.” Macron is scheduled to meet one-on-one with Trump during the G-7. Trump responded by accusing Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of hurting the U.S. with unfair trade practices: “Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the U.S. massive tariffs and create

non-monetary barriers. The EU trade surplus with the U.S. is $151 Billion, and Canada keeps our farmers and others out.” The joint statements are often ceremonial and don’t carry the weight of international law, but they do establish common principles that each nation shares. Trump and his advisers have discussed the idea of refusing to sign a joint statement, known as a communique. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin declined to sign a joint G-7 statement last week during a meeting with other finance ministers, in a possible prelude of what was to come. Trump has spent much of this year engaged in a series of

escalating trade wars with a number of countries, including U.S. allies Canada, Mexico and members of the European Union like France. Last month he announced he was imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from those countries, infuriating numerous foreign leaders who have pledged to confront him during the G-7. Trump’s advisers have signaled that he plans to stand his ground in Canada. He has publicly expressed more interest in the meeting he will have with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore after he leaves Canada, making clear to advisers that he isn’t looking forward to being lectured by other leaders. Stuck in cavity country In rural America there are too few dentists — and too few patients who can afford care

WASHINGTONPOST.COM TO YOUR HEALTH

Report: Suicide rates have risen across the U.S.

RICKY CARIOTI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

HEALTH Lynnel Beauchesne’s dental office hugs a rural crossroads near Tunnelton, W.Va., population 336. Acres of empty farmland surround the weathered one-story white building, but the parking lot is full. Some people have driven hours to see Beauchesne, the sole dentist within 30 miles. She estimates that she has as many as 8,000 patients. Before the office closes at 7 p.m., she and her two hygienists will see up to 50 of them, not counting emergencies. About 43 percent of rural Americans lack access to dental care, according to the National Rural Health Association, and West Virginia, among the poorest and most rural states, is at the center of the crisis. The state’s Oral Health Program found in 2014 and 2015 that nearly half of counties had fewer than six practicing dentists, just half of adult West Virginians had visited a dentist in the previous year, and more than one-fifth hadn’t seen a dentist in five years. By comparison, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study in 2015 found that 64 percent of all American adults ages 18 to 64 reported seeing a dentist in the previous year. One seemingly obvious solution is to persuade more dentists and other oral health providers to come to places like West Virginia, a goal of various public efforts. The federal National Health Service Corps program, for example, offers up to $50,000 in loan assistance to doctors and dentists willing to work two years in a designated shortage area. And several states have passed or considered legislation authorizing “dental therapists” — midlevel

providers akin to nurse practitioners — to provide certain kinds of primary dental care in areas where dentists are scarce. But while it is true that West Virginia has a dentist shortage, adding more providers will not solve the problem of rural oral health. “Affordability is the big thing,” said Richard Meckstroth, chair of the department of dental practice and rural health at West Virginia University. And affordability cuts both ways. Recruiting more providers into shortage areas can compound the problem, said Meckstroth, putting local dentists into tougher financial straits by increasing competition for a relatively small pool of paying patients. The dentists who arrive under loan forgiveness programs also tend to leave after their two-year obligation is up, what Meckstroth calls a “revolving door” that deprives patients of continuity of care. As busy as Beauchesne’s

Why skip dental visits? Some 74 million Americans had no dental coverage in 2016, according to the National Association of Dental Plans, putting the dentally uninsured rate at nearly four times the rate for the medically uninsured. According to a 2014 report from the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute, nearly 20 percent of adults ages 21 to 64 said they’d forgone needed dental care in the past 12 months, with the most common reason being “could not afford the cost.” (TWP)

practice is, it brings in only enough to stay afloat. The office charges $90 for a cleaning, an exam and bitewing X-rays — about half the national average fee and a third of what many bigcity dentists would charge for the same services. Beauchesne will even barter for services. “If I needed a cow or a [side

of] beef or a hog, whatever the normal cost would be, they can get a filling or a crown,” she said. Providing dental benefits under Medicare — at least for preventive services such as an annual cleaning — would both benefit seniors and help dentists in rural areas survive. Also helpful to patients and providers would be expanding Medicaid coverage of preventive care to adults instead of ending it at age 21. Covering preventive care would also reduce the amount spent on emergency room dental visits, which the American Dental Association estimates cost the U.S. health system $1.6 billion in 2012. Still, the dental care crisis in rural America is closely linked to broader challenges in parts of the country that have not yet caught up in the economic recovery. “How you improve access in rural America,” says Meckstroth, “is to get people jobs.” ANNE KIM (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Suicide rates rose in all but one state between 1999 and 2016, with increases seen across age, gender, race and ethnicity lines, according to a report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In more than half of all deaths in 27 states, the people had no known mental health condition when they ended their lives. In North Dakota, the rate jumped more than 57 percent. In the most recent period studied (2014 to 2016), the rate was highest in Montana, at 29.2 per 100,000 residents, compared with the national average of 13.4 per 100,000. Only Nevada recorded a decline — of 1 percent — for the overall period, although its rate remained higher than the national average. Increasingly, suicide is being viewed not only as a mental health problem but a public health one. Nearly 45,000 suicides occurred in the U.S. in 2016 — more than twice the number of homicides — making it the 10th-leading cause of death. Among people ages 15 to 34, suicide is the second-leading cause of death. Overall, the most common method used was firearms. “The data are disturbing,” said Anne Schuchat, the CDC’s principal deputy director. “The widespread nature of the increase, in every state but one, really suggests that this is a national problem hitting most communities.” AMY ELLIS NUTT

nation+world Some are evacuated from consulate over mystery health issues GUANGZHOU, CHINA A U.S. medical team was screening more Americans who work at the consulate in southern China as the State Department confirmed evacuating government employees who experienced unexplained health issues like those that have already hurt U.S. personnel in Cuba and China. The evacuations of workers in Guangzhou followed medical testing that revealed they might have been affected. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said “a number of individuals” had been brought to the

U.S. but didn’t say how many were affected or evacuated. A previous case, disclosed last month, prompted the tests. Nauert also said that remaining U.S. government personnel and their families in Guangzhou would be able to request testing. The incidents have raised fears that the unexplained issues that started in Cuba in 2016 have expanded. Most of the incidents were accompanied by bizarre, unexplained sounds that initially led U.S. investigators to suspect a sonic attack. Symptoms have included dizziness, headaches and an inability to concentrate. The New York Times identified the latest American employee evacuated as Mark A. Lenzi, a security engineering

officer at the consulate who left Wednesday night with his wife and two children. Lenzi told The Times he resided in the same

apartment tower as the officer evacuated in April and suffered from “neurological symptoms.” A U.S. official, who requested anonymity, said the evacuated American government workers were being brought for testing to the University of Pennsylvania. That’s where doctors have been treating and studying patients previously evacuated from the U.S. Embassy in Havana. The preliminary findings on the 24 personnel affected in Cuba showed they had sensory and memory problems similar to brain dysfunction seen with concussions. The Penn team said the patients had persistent disability, but customized rehabilitation therapy seemed to help.

BUSINESS The Trump administration has agreed to ease its punishment of Chinese telecom company ZTE, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, above, said Thursday. The company will pay a $1 billion fine and fund a new in-house compliance team staffed by U.S. experts, Ross told CNBC. The move relaxes a seven-year ban on ZTE buying American parts, which Commerce levied in April. At the time, the Chinese government complained that the action could put the company, a major employer and star of the Chinese technology industry, out of business. “We are literally embedding a compliance department of our choosing into the company to monitor it going forward. They will pay for those people, but the people will report to the new chairman,” Ross said. “This is a pretty strict settlement.” The Commerce Department action came after President Trump tweeted last month that he planned to help ZTE because “too many jobs in China” would otherwise be lost. The president’s extraordinary intervention in an enforcement matter drew widespread criticism on Capitol Hill from members of both parties. Reactions Thursday were no warmer. “China is eating our lunch, and this president is serving it up to them,” said House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. DAVID J. Colangelo resigns as GM of 76ers

WARRIORS AT CAVALIERS | GAME 4: 9 P.M. FRIDAY, ABC

Cleveland’s kryptonite ANALYSIS When LeBron James chose to return to Cleveland four years ago, the Cavaliers looked ready to contend for the rest of the decade, at least. But two years ago, the Warriors added Kevin Durant, and everything changed. “You guys asked me this last year,” James said late Wednesday, after Golden State’s 110102 win at Cleveland gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead in the NBA Finals. “ ‘What was the difference between the Warriors the previous year and this year?’ And what was my answer? ‘Kevin Durant’ was my answer.” James went on to call Durant, “one of the best players that I’ve ever played against,” referencing Durant’s “ability to handle the ball, shoot the ball, make plays at his length, his size, his speed.” That summarizes the difference between the finals two years ago, and the finals this year. If James leaves Cleveland as a free agent for the second time, that difference will be the reason. This isn’t how things were supposed to go in James’ second act with Cleveland. When he announced he was coming home, the Akron native was coming off four years in Miami as a two-time champ at the peak of his powers. Waiting for him in Cleveland was Kyrie Irving, a dynamic

scoring guard who was a perfectly suited sidekick. Kevin Love, a versatile All-Star big man, would soon joined them. With that core, Cleveland seemed to put James in position to win multiple titles. Before Durant joined Golden State, the plan appeared to be on schedule. Cleveland reached the NBA Finals in James’ first two years back. The Cavs lost to Golden State when both Irving and Love were injured, and then delivered the title that James had promised with a dramatic comeback from a 3-1 series deficit to beat a 73-win Warriors team. Then the Warriors added Durant in free agency without sacrificing any of their stars. In last year’s finals, the Warriors defeated the Cavs in five games. If Durant had stayed in Oklahoma City, the Warriors may not have even made it out of the West the past two years. If Durant stayed, and Cleveland defended its title or at least lost a tighter series, maybe Irving wouldn’t have demanded a trade. But Durant came to Golden State, and now the Warriors can win a game like Wednesday’s, when Stephen Curry shot 3-for-16 but Durant came through with a career playoff high 43 points. These finals have shown just how large the gap has grown

Gilbert plays nice Cleveland is one loss away from entering an offseason in which LeBron James is expected to opt out of his contract and enter free agency. Dan Gilbert, the owner who famously excoriated the superstar’s “cowardly betrayal” in an open letter when James left for Miami in 2010, has changed his tune. Gilbert said on a Business Insider podcast this week that he had said “stupid things” and that James is more of a “partner” than an employee. (EXPRESS)

Bryan Colangelo resigned Thursday as Philadelphia’s president of basketball operations in the wake of what an investigation found was “careless and in some instances reckless” sharing of sensitive team information. An independent review by a law firm did not determine that Colangelo operated or was even aware of Twitter accounts — first linked to the general manager by The Ringer — that anonymously trashed 76ers players and executives. Colangelo’s wife Barbara Bottini admitted to operating the four accounts investigated by the law firm. She also said she wiped her iPhone with a factory reset prior to submitting it for forensic review, which limited the investigation. (AP)

between the Warriors and Cavs. Cleveland has two players — James and George Hill — that are quality two-way competitors. James has picked up the slack, even in defeat. He scored his own playoff career high, 51 points, in Game 1. He posted 33 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in Game 3 despite spraining an ankle. Even for the greatest player of his generation, there are some burdens too great to carry. Beating these Warriors is one of them. TIM BONTEMPS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Redskins running back Rob Kelley ran for 704 yards in 2016 before slumping last year.

Quit? Fat chance: Kelley fights to win role with Redskins always seemed shut to him last season. These practices aren’t full-contact, but Kelley is showing added aggressiveness and banging into linebackers. “Eventually, [fans will] see the work I put in,” he said. “I just feel better.” This is prove-it time. Barring injuries, there aren’t always opportunities for players to move up the depth chart in training camp. Practices and preseason games are too scripted. Fortunately for Kelley, he has coach Jay Gruden’s interest again. Two years ago, Kelley was a true find out of Tulane. As a rookie, he started nine games and rushed for 704 yards and six touchdowns. In Kelley’s very first practice, Gruden mentioned No. 20 without knowing his name. Last season, Kelley struggled to bounce off defenders. He gained just 194 yards and averaged a measly 3.1 yards per carry. He played in just seven games, and the Redskins searched for his replacement. Now Gruden is giving Kelley

Sloane Stephens advanced to the French Open final for the first time Thursday, beating Madison Keys 6-4, 6-4 in an all-American semifinal in Paris. The 10th-seeded Stephens, 25, beat Keys in the U.S. Open final last year for her first major title. She will face top-seeded Simona Halep of Romania in Saturday’s final. Redskins running back Rob Kelley is finally healthy and a little hungry. Maybe a little more focused, too. Nobody is muscling him off the roster easily. Rookie second-round pick Derrius Guice is expected to be the opening-day starter, which leaves Kelley searching for a role in a crowded backfield. Second-year back Samaje Perine is the short-yardage runner, and Chris Thompson is the third-down back. Kelley, 25, was an undrafted phenom in 2016, but last season he endured an injuryinduced sophomore slump. Kelley broke a rib in Week 2, hampering him for eight games until an MCL injury ended his season. He’s been largely forgotten by fans excited to get a glimpse of Guice’s potential. But hold on — Kelley’s not done yet. He’s starred in offseason training activities, finding interior holes that

one more chance, and the young back is responding well. “Rob’s never been an issue as far as work ethic is concerned,” Gruden said. Kelley’s “Fat Rob” nickname hasn’t been relevant since college. His long dreadlocks are now gone. He’s lost a few more pounds and looks a little quicker. What Gruden is looking for is “consistency in all phases” in a rushing offense that looks to be a more prominent part of the attack after ranking 28th and 21st in the

league the past two years. For Kelley, finding a role remains the top challenge. “We’re looking for the total package,” Gruden said. “For the most part, we’ll just play the best player. It’s going to be a tough decision when that happens, but I’m not going to think about that now. I want to be fair to all of them, let them all have an opportunity.” Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. Follow him on Twitter @Snide_Remarks

‘Hotel Artemis’ They’ll get around to plotting the heist as soon as Debbie tells them where she got those pants.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

A fashion crime: Clothes make the thief in ‘Ocean’s 8’ The women of “Ocean’s 8” commit a high crime in high fashion. With no pockets. Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) — sister of Danny of the “Ocean’s Eleven”-through“Thirteen” trilogy — has put together what the movie thankfully never calls a “girl group.” Fresh out on parole, Debbie sets her sights on the annual Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is that real-life party where everyone wears crazy clothes they can barely walk in. Specifically, Debbie’s group is targeting a 6-pound diamond necklace to be worn by actor Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway, who still has the comedy chops from the “Princess

Diaries” movies). The buildup to the heist is engaging and occasionally hilarious; the robbery itself is clever and tense in all the right ways. It’s especially right because of where it takes place: at what’s essentially a fashion show. First, let’s clarify that there are plenty of men who are interested in fashion and plenty of women who aren’t. That said, clothing usually falls into the “girl toys” category of life. Moreover, from high school’s “Isn’t that skirt a little short?” to middle age’s “Isn’t that outfit a bit young for you?” women’s clothing is scrutinized more than men’s. Whether it’s at the Met Gala, the Oscars, work or the gym, women often use clothes to stand out or to blend in. The irony, of course, is that

“In the Heights” film due in theaters June 2020

fashion is often unkind to women. At the highest end, actresses and models have to fit into a very thin box. Even when the rest of us wear higher-end or more formal pieces, there are Spanx and strapless bras and heels that usually go with them. And forget about practicality — there are so few pockets. Dress pants usually have fake ones, and I can count on one hand the number of dresses I have that have pockets. I know I can do that because that number is one. So setting “Ocean’s 8” at a fashion-centric event means that “Ocean’s 8” is not only about women, but it takes place in a space where clothing is the entire point of the evening (the event raises money for the Met’s Costume Institute). At first, only Debbie is the star,

‘Ocean’s 8’ (PG-13, 110 min.) DIRECTOR: Gary Ross STARS: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna IN A NUTSHELL: Debbie Ocean assembles a crew to attempt a heist at the Met Gala. If they fail, she can always try again next year with nine.

startlingly visible in an evening gown; most of the other women in her crew are dressed as dishwashers and servers and the like, so they enter through the back doors and blend in with the background. As all the women move into evening gowns — Rihanna’s look drew actual applause at my screening, and deservedly so — they can walk out the front door and blend in with the crowd. These women know the messages clothing sends, and they use that knowledge to their advantage. Their strategy isn’t one that would necessarily work in a casino or bank; they speak the sartorial language of power, so of course they’re going to pick a place where that’s the common tongue. Costumes carry meaning in film — just like our everyday clothes do in real life. In “Ocean’s 8,” they’re a way for women to navigate through echelons of power in a way men might not be able to. Debbie and her team use fewer people to go after more money than Danny ever did. And they do it in style. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

For all its self-seriousness, “Hotel Artemis” — starring Jodie Foster, Dave Bautista and Sterling K. Brown, among others — is ultimately a silly story of bad guys, big egos and one good fight sequence. The concept of an exclusive hotel for rich hit men is not new (see: “John Wick”). Here, however, it gets saddled with so many rules and shallow relationships that it loses its charm. MONICA CASTILLO (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Zama’ Unrated, 115 min.

“Zama” tells the tragicomic story of Don Diego de Zama (Daniel Gimenez Cacho), an 18th-century Spanish colonial officer stuck in a remote South American backwater while awaiting a transfer to a more hospitable locale. The movie takes a jaundiced view of life on Earth, even as it offers up a scathing — and, ultimately, violent — critique of colonialism. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

An inherent sense of terror ‘Hereditary’ revels in gore, chaos and some carefully crafted frights

Mr. Rogers doc finds an ideal to strive toward

A24

FILM REVIEW Creepy, creepy, creepy. Writerdirector Ari Aster makes an impressively unnerving debut with “Hereditary,” a meticulously crafted horror thriller starring Toni Collette. As Annie, the harried, confused artist at the center of this domestic dystopia, Collette delivers the most all-in performance of her recent career, plunging headlong into her character’s increasingly terrorized and terrified psyche. Benefiting from equally assured turns from Gabriel Byrne, as Annie’s impassive husband, Steve, and the young actors Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro as their kids, Peter and Charlie, “Hereditary” elaborates on the familiar theme of haunted houses and cursed families with precision and imagination — at least until its chaotic endgame. At that point, the allusions Aster has so tantalizingly built up disintegrate into graphic gore and on-the-nose literalism. Until that unfortunate turn, though, horror fans are in for one wild ride. “Hereditary” begins with the funeral of Annie’s mother, described in her daughter’s less-than-effusive eulogy as one prone to “secret rituals” and emotional withholding. Upon returning to their gorgeous Craftsman home, Annie, Steve and their children disperse

Members of the Graham family wonder whether they should invest in better lighting for their dining room.

and atomize, with Annie retreating to her studio to work on the dollhouse-like art installations that are her specialty. Those miniaturized versions of her life are clearly Annie’s way of processing grief, ambivalence and more profound losses that she can’t quite name. Despite her family’s obvious prosperity, all is not well with Annie and her family. Charlie, who is given to making disturbing sculptures and odd clucking noises with her tongue, seems to have withdrawn into her own world. “Hereditary” is punctuated midway through by an event that is shocking — both in and of itself, but also in its aftermath. The degree to which the audience buys into what ensues will differ

‘Hereditary’ (R, 127 min.) DIRECTOR: Ari Aster STARS: Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd IN A NUTSHELL: Following the death of an elderly matriarch, her daughter and grandchildren discover increasingly haunting secrets about their ancestry.

with each viewer’s threshold for disbelief. But even as the core story goes crazily off the rails, Aster evinces a fine eye for worldbuilding and detail, his carefully constructed environments echoing Annie’s own precious but often disquieting tableaus. W h at do es it a l l me a n?

Maneuvering the camera like an unseen spirit, Aster provides some bread crumbs along the way. Whereas “Hereditary” at first seems to be of a piece with such recent films as “The Babadook,” “The Witch” and “Raw,” it takes a pulpy, supernatural turn that effectively stops any allegorical potential in its tracks. “Hereditary” is staged, photographed and acted so brilliantly, and brings up issues of motherhood, resentment and creativity with such subtlety, that it’s tempting to overlook its alternately astonishing and laughable excesses. For a while, this movie is going places, even if the final destination isn’t nearly as fascinating as the journey. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FILM REVIEW “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” feels reverse-engineered to soothe the rapidly fraying nerves of a country mired in political and pop culture food fights. Revisiting Fred Rogers’ signature TV show, “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” and the kind but steadfastly enigmatic man behind it, Morgan Neville has created a film that operates both as a dewy-eyed nostalgia trip and stirring appeal for civility. With his singsong voice and reassuring demeanor, Rogers presented a benign figure in his cardigan and lace-up sneakers. Underneath the bland exterior, he was acting as an ambassador for groundbreaking work in child psychology and what we now call media literacy. The unspoken question that animates “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” is what Rogers would make of the present day, when the culture seems to have congealed into a permanent state of outrage, vulgarity and mutual intolerance. Rather than a wistful look back at the way things used to be, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” leaves viewers wrestling with our own collective conscience in the here-and-now, contemplating our commitment to the unconditional love and acceptance that Rogers championed so passionately. As an empathic, enlightened call to arms, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” winds up being as quietly, cozily radical as its subject. A.H.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
