Sergeant revealed to doctors he was caged by Taliban captors U.S. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl has told people treating him at an American military medical facility in Germany that he was tortured, beaten and held in a cage by his Taliban captors in Afghanistan after he tried to escape, a senior U.S. official said Sunday. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it was difficult to verify the accounts Bergdahl has given since his release a week ago. Bergdahl, now 28, was captured in June 2009 after he disappeared from his infantry unit. He was held for nearly five years by Taliban militants. On Friday, Taliban spokes-

to his family. It’s unclear when he may get to go home. The Pentagon said in a statement Sunday that it would not comment on Bergdahl’s discussions with those caring for him. Typically, a returned captive would spend from five days to three weeks in the phase of rein-

tegration in which Bergdahl now finds himself, according to a Pentagon psychologist. Once Bergdahl is considered ready to move on to the next phase of his decompression, he is expected to be flown to an Army medical center in San Antonio, where it is believed he will be reunited with his family. Bergdahl was returned to the U.S. military in exchange for the release of five Taliban militants from the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. There is concern that the highlevel Taliban officials will resume activities with the Taliban and threaten the U.S. “I just think that’s a lot of baloney,” said Secretary of State John Kerry, in a taped interview for CNN’s “State of the Union” program Sunday, noting that the U.S. will be ending its combat role in Afghanistan and will have fewer people in positions of risk. The Texas Republican Party now endorses so-called “reparative therapy” for gays, under a new platform given final approval at its annual convention Saturday. The new anti-gay language never came up for debate before roughly 7,000 delegates ratified a Texas GOP platform that tea party groups succeeded in pushing further to the right, including winning a harder line on immigration. One influential tea party group called Texas Eagle Forum had urged the party to support psychological

Evidence: Clinton a Sure Bet for 2016 Column Hillary Rodham Clinton is running for president. That simple sentence is one that the political-media complex seems incapable of uttering, though evidence is sprinkled everywhere for a 2016 run. Consider this: Ready for Hillary, a super PAC designed to pave the way for her bid, began as a quasi-lark by wellmeaning supporters. Today, it has all the looks of a sort of holding tank for top Hillary campaign talent. Serious people are endorsing her, including Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, who pledged his support to Clinton last month, calling her the “right person for the job.” The attempt to positively frame Clinton’s negatives has begun. When GOP strategist Karl Rove suggested that Clinton suffered a major brain injury in 2012, the response from Clintonworld was swift. “Hard Choices,” out Tuesday, is pure and simple a campaign book. For Clinton, there’s no benefit to declaring her candidacy anytime soon. But there is every indication she is running: She is readying a campaign team, building policy proposals and framing her negatives in the best light. Clinton’s next “hard choice” doesn’t seem all that hard. CHRIS CILLIZZ A (THE WASHINGTON POST )

For years, the massive toll of wild animals exterminated by the federal government as a service to everything from airports to ranches has bounced up and down like a yo-yo. Last year it was up again. The more than 4 million animals shot, poisoned, snared or trapped by the Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services in fiscal year 2013 included 75,326 coyotes, 866 bobcats, 528 river otters, 3,700 foxes, 12,186 prairie dogs, 973 redtailed hawks, 419 black bears and at least three eagles, golden and bald. Though there’s a list of animals killed, there’s little data showing the cause for each killing, the methods used and the reasons behind mistakes that lead to massive kills of animals that aren’t targeted. At least two members of Congress have called Wildlife Services secret and opaque for failing to provide more information, and there are mounting calls for an investigation into how it operates. Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., has railed against the secret methods of Wildlife Services. DeFazio has asked to know what goes into poi-

Backstory Near the turn of the century, the kill total hit a staggering 4 million. Two years later, in 2001, it fell to about 1.5 million and stayed relatively low for six years. But in 2008, the number of kills rocketed to 5 million before trending downward to 3 million over the next four years. Now it’s back up, well past 4 million in the most recent count. (T WP)

sons used that are a danger to people and harmless animals, but he hasn’t gotten an answer. “We’re really not sure what they’re doing,” he said. Wildlife Services says that it responds to requests by government agencies and works to “resolve human/wildlife conflicts” in a strategic way. Its primary purpose is to eradicate invasive creatures introduced from other parts of the world (feral hogs and giant swamp rats called nutria). But the agency also kills native animals en masse, sometimes based solely on a homeowner’s or farmer’s perception of a threat. Birds that invade airports and swipe cattle feed at farms contribute to the high totals. Non-native European starlings, sparrows, pigeons and such accounted for 87 percent of animals killed. Birds in general are singled out as a nuisance. DARRYL FEARS (THE WASHINGTON POST )

El-Sissi Takes Office in Egypt New president holds hard line on militants in inaugural speech Cairo Egypt’s former military chief Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, winner by a landslide in last month’s presidential election, was sworn into office Sunday nearly a year after he ousted the nation’s first freely elected leader. The retired field marshal called for unity and hard work, while vowing that there would be no reconciliation with those who took up arms against the government. That was a thinly veiled reference to supporters of Mohammed Morsi, the Islamist president el-Sissi removed last July, and militants waging attacks against the government. He did not mention by name Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, which

was declared a terrorist group by the government last December. But el-Sissi’s rise coincides with detention of thousands and the killing of hundreds of Morsi supporters. El-Sissi’s inauguration came less

than a year after he ousted Morsi following days of mass protests demanding he step down. He has been praised by many in a wave of nationalist fervor fueled by a jingoistic media, despite the harsh crack-

down by security forces. “Let us differ for the sake of our nation and not over it; let us do that as part of a unifying national march in which every party listens to the other objectively and without ulterior motives,” he said. El-Sissi also vowed to fight corruption and appeared to make an overture to pro-democracy and secular youth activists, many of whom boycotted last month’s presidential election. They accuse the new president of reviving toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak’s police state, pointing to a law passed last year that restricts protests as well as the jailing of a number of wellknown activists. He peppered his 55-minute address with references to “freedom, social justice and bread,” the main slogan by youth groups behind the January 2011 uprising that ended Mubarak’s 29-year rule. PARATROOPERS PREPARE TO LAND Sunday as part of commemorations of the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landing in Normandy. In the foreground is sculpture Iron Mike, a monument dedicated to the American airborne soldiers.

Pope Francis plunged head-first into Mideast peace-making Sunday, welcoming the Israeli and Palestinian presidents to the Vatican for a remarkable evening of peace prayers just weeks after the last round of negotiations collapsed. Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas joked and embraced in the foyer of the Vatican hotel where Francis lives and later in the Vatican gardens, where they joined Francis in presiding over a sunset invocation of Jewish, Christian and Muslim prayers.

Francis told the two men, who signed the Oslo peace accords in 1993, that he hoped the summit would mark “a new journey” toward peace. He said too many children had been killed by war and violence, and that their memory should instill the strength and patience to work for dialogue and coexistence. “Peacemaking calls for courage, much more so than warfare,” he said. “It calls for the courage to say yes to encounter and no to conflict.” No concrete results are expected: Peres has no formal role in peace negotiations, holds a largely ceremonial post and leaves office at the end of the month. Dispensing With Paper Fare Cards In a few years, using Metro’s SmarTrip will be riders’ only option Washington Thirty-eight years after the opening of Metro, which has become the second-busiest subway in America, the demise of the paper fare card is finally at hand. It’s another relic of the 1970s vanishing into Metro history, like the transit agency’s first generation of subway cars. They will soon be retired, replaced by the 7000 series. Same with paper. In the next year and a half, starting with an

expected contract award this month, Metro plans to spend almost $9 million to retrofit about 500 fare card dispensers throughout the system so that they will sell only plastic, reusable, computer-chip SmarTrip cards. By December 2015, if all goes as scheduled, transit officials say, only one, small component of the ancient, belt-and-pulley fare gates will continue to function: The electronic SmarTrip card readers that were installed in the late 1990s. The retrofitting is just the first, short-term phase of a nearly $200 million plan to radically change the subway’s fare-collection system in coming years. By 2020, Metro says, a new generation of gates,

At the Gates After December 2015, anyone with a leftover paper fare card will still be able to use it, Metro says. Paper cards won’t be sold anymore, but the gates will continue to accept them for a few months, as a transition period. Then paper will disappear from the system. (T WP)

featuring digital “near field capability,” will allow riders to pay with credit or debit cards, a cellphone or an improved type of SmarTrip card (that’s coming, too) without removing it from their pockets or bags. The goal, says Adam McGavock,

HIGH TECH. HIGHER DEGREE.

Metro’s sales director, is to eliminate the huge maintenance costs associated with paper fare cards. While more than 90 percent of Metro riders use SmarTrip cards these days, he says, fare machines still dispense about 2 million paper cards each month, which cumulatively takes a toll on the gates. Metro introduced SmarTrip cards in 1999 (and added a $1 surcharge to paper cards in 2012) in an effort to move riders away from paper. When the blue fare machines start dispensing them, Metro says, there will be a one-time $2 fee for the card, but the rider will be able to choose any initial fare value. PAUL DUGGAN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Relic of the Past Adam McGavock, Metro’s sales director, describes what happens when a rider uses a paper fare card: “What pulls your card in is a big rubber belt … It’s motorized and running on a bunch of pulleys, and the pulleys have to be lubricated. The belt has to be tensioned and adjusted. It has to have powder put on it to maintain the exact right stickiness and durometer, OK?” He takes a breath. “So the belt grabs your card and drags it across the mag-stripe reader … Those have to be cleaned with rubbing alcohol and a Q-tip.” He says: “Then there’s a rubber stamp that has to go into ink and stamp the value on your card … I mean, really, it’s a miracle of engineering. … It’s a brilliantly made machine. For 1968.” (T WP)

Republicans appear to have outsmarted Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe in a budgetand-Medicaid standoff by persuading a conservative Democratic senator to resign his seat, at least temporarily giving the GOP control of that chamber, three people familiar with the deal said Sunday. Second Man Charged in Bottle-Bomb Incidents Authorities in Prince George’s County have charged a second man they believe was involved in setting off so-called bottle bombs at movie theaters across the region in recent months, sparking panic. Michael Sean Hollingsworth, 23, is believed to have served as the driver for 20-year-old Manuel Joyner-Bell Jr., who was charged last week with actually detonating the devices, said a spokesman for the Prince George’s County Fire/ EMS Department. Now the one-time Republican National Committee chairman turns his attention to an uphill battle against Warner, who already has a huge leg up in fundraising and name recognition. But in a year when Democrats are vulnerable and the GOP is hoping to retake the Senate, the race will draw attention and money from across the country. Virginia Republicans — still smarting from the loss of all three statewide races on the ballot last year — came to Saturday’s convention with winning on their minds. Gillespie’s leading rival, retired Air Force pilot Shak Hill, conceded before all the votes were counted.

Roanoke, Va. In a victory for establishment Republicans, political strategist and former lobbyist Ed Gillespie handily secured the GOP nomination at the party’s state convention Saturday, winning the chance to face Sen. Mark Warner in the general election. The vote reflected the party’s desire to coalesce around a candidate with wide appeal and the best chance of unseating Warner, a popular former governor and oneterm senator. Ed Gillespie bested rivals Shak Hill, Tony DeTora and Chuck Moss on Saturday at the GOP’s state convention.

Gillespie was leading by more than 60 percent with about 90 percent of the votes counted, and he touted his rivals’ concession as a show of unity in an often-fractious party. The outcome was a disappointment to some conservatives. “I really think Gillespie is a

Washington insider and lobbyist,” said Rosanne Reddin, a retired teacher from Williamsburg. Going into the convention, Gillespie was the front-runner — ahead of Hill, congressional policy adviser Tony DeTora and businessman Chuck Moss. But conventions are unpredictable, because only the most active and committed Republicans are willing to spend a beautiful June day inside a dark convention hall. The 2,686 people who attended the convention represent about 1 percent of the 225,826 who voted in the GOP presidential primary in 2012. It was his typical departure time, as he generally tried to beat rush hour when driving to his job. But what was happening — his wife in labor, her belief that things were progressing rapidly as he raced down Interstate 270 — was about as atypical a morning drive as he could imagine. “I think something’s happening,” Ann Noland said shortly before 5:20 a.m. near one of the Germantown, Md., exits. Bathroom Breakdown D.C.’s Metro is the second-busiest subway system in the country, but other big-city systems seem to make it easier for their customers who, well, need to go. (T WP)

Michael Essien, who commutes 70 minutes from his home, uses the bathroom at Shady Grove — other times, he’s been told he couldn’t.

The Silver Line’s distinction may cause potty envy among riders, but the advocate who led the years-ago fight for access and questions Metro’s commitment to providing restrooms in other parts of the system hopes that seeing “real transit stations with real bathrooms” sparks outrage and change. “People are going to head out to Tysons and see these modern stations that look like they should,” said Robert Brubaker, who led a public restroom campaign for Metro riders in 2003 and later created the American Restroom Association, a national advocacy group. “They’re going to go, ‘Why don’t we have better bathrooms in the other Metro stations?’ ” An unscientific — and often odoriferous — two-month Washington Post study of Metro station restrooms revealed that although the system does provide restrooms in 81 of its 86 stations, they’re often dirty, single-stall facilities, inaccessible to all but the most knowledgeable riders. D.C. resident Rebeca Barge, 28, said someone once told her that she needed to ask the station manager for a key to use the Metro restroom.

VICTORIA ST. MARTIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

At the L’Enfant Plaza Metro station, a request to use the restroom turns into a 20-minute treasure hunt. One station manager says the restroom is being cleaned and suggests using the facilities at a nearby Five Guys restaurant. After insisting that I do not want to leave the station, she concedes that there is a second restroom. On the other side of the station. I make the trek. The manager there leads me to a locked brown metal door marked “Fire Equipment Cabinet.” He opens it only to discover that it is being cleaned. He directs me to a third location. It’s a maze of twists and turns to yet another station manager, who unlocks a third door and finally, relief. It’s not supposed to be that difficult. A decade ago, advocates lobbied the transit agency to make restrooms readily available. It’s not as if the stations don’t have them; most do. The restrooms aren’t easily identifiable or accessible, but station managers are supposed to make them available to any rider who requests them. The issue has again come to the fore as the Silver Line approaches its long-awaited opening, with officials revealing that each new station will have its own state-of-the-art restroom facilities. Each station will have four restrooms — two for men, two for women — in plain sight, unlike most Metro restrooms, which are hidden in hallways behind nondescript doors. Metro officials insist, however, that the new stations are not getting anything special. Spokesman Dan Stessel said, “Even though the restrooms are not tucked away in a utility hallway, they will still be accessed the same way: Station managers will provide access for customers who request it.”

A Flush Fail? In 2003, Metro leased a self-cleaning toilet from New Zealand and installed it at the Huntington station as a one-year test. The Jetsons-inspired toilet, which the agency now owns, remains there today. Touch a button, and a toilet seat comes out of a compartment in the wall. After use, it automatically flushes and the seat is washed with a cleanser and returned to its compartment. But self-cleaning doesn’t necessarily mean it leaves the user feeling fresh and clean. A Washington Post reporter found the odor was unbearable and the floor was so wet that it was hard to tell whether it was from cleaning solution, water, urine or some combination. (T WP)

So she asked a Vienna Metro station manager. He said he couldn’t give her a key but would open the door. “Up until a year ago, I didn’t know there were bathrooms at Metro stations,” Barge said. Russell Carpenter, 73, has been riding Metro since it opened in 1976. “I never knew they were there,” he said. It’s not supposed to be a secret. A special order to all Metro personnel dated March 17, 2004, required the restrooms to be opened for riders who asked. At the time, some agency officials expressed concerns that the restrooms could become havens for crime and other unsavory activities, hence the facilities remain locked. Brubaker, the advocate for the bladder-challenged, said building codes for restrooms have changed over the years. “The new ones [at Silver Line stations] are going to look pretty good,” he said. Still, to Harold Cartier, 23, a graduate student, it isn’t fair that users of some stations get nicer facilities. “If they decide to include it for the Silver Line,” he said, “then why not do it for every line?” VICTORIA ST. NHL Says Concussions On Decline NHL Hours before the Stanley Cup finals began, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman proudly proclaimed that concussions are down across the league and there are numbers to back him up. That does not mean the league has figured out how to prevent head injuries among its players. Or that the numbers tell the whole story. According to data from STATS provided to The Associated Press, there were 53 concussions during the regular season, a sharp decline from the 78 reported during the league’s last full season two years ago. But even Bettman said there is only so much the league can do about a player hiding a head injury to stay on the ice. Current players seem to be adapting to the NHL’s emphasis on safer play: Physical penalties — such as illegal checks to the head, checks from behind and elbowing — have dropped in each of the last six regular seasons. An average of 1.03 physical penalties were called per game during the 2013-14 season, according to STATS, down from 1.14, 1.16, 1.25, 1.36 and 1.39 the previous five years. Suspensions have generally held steady at around 35 per season the past few years, and players are sometimes forced to sit even if no penalty is called. L ARRY L AGE (AP)

Nadal tops Djokovic to win his ninth title at the French Open Tennis Trying to beat Rafael Nadal at the French Open is, without a doubt, the toughest task in tennis — and it might be among the greatest challenges in all of sports. The pressure he applies, from set to set, game to game, point to point, shot to shot. That bullwhip of a high-bouncing, topspin lefty forehand. Those quick-reflex returns that help him break an opponent’s serve — and his will.

Looking Ahead Maria Sharapova won her second French Open title in three years on Saturday, beating Simona Halep 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 in the final at Roland Garros. It’s her fifth Grand Slam title overall and it comes 10 years after her first, which she won on the grass of Wimbledon. “Doesn’t matter,” Sharapova said, already thinking ahead to the next few weeks. “Wimbledon is right around the corner, and that’s what I’ll be working for.” (AP)

66-1 Rafael Nadal’s career record at Roland Garros after beating Novak Djokovic in Sunday’s French Open Final. His lone loss was to Robin Soderling in the fourth round of the 2009 tournament.

Doing what he does so well on the red clay of Roland Garros, a surface and site he dominates so completely, the No. 1-seeded Nadal wore down No. 2 Novak Djokovic 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4 Sunday to win his ninth French Open championship and fifth in a row, both records. “For me,” Nadal said, “playing here in Roland Garros is just unforgettable, forever.” It is also his 14th Grand Slam title overall, tying the 28-year-old Spaniard with Pete Sampras for the second most by a man, behind only Roger Federer’s 17. That includes Nadal’s two trophies apiece at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, along with one

from the Australian Open, proving he can beat the best on grass and hard courts, too. But it’s on the clay of Paris where Nadal reigns supreme: He has won 66 of his 67 career matches at the French Open. A nd since his only defeat, against Robin Soderling in the fourth round in 2009, Nadal has won 35 consecutive matches at

Roland Garros. “It’s not impossible, but it’s very, very difficult to stay with Rafa in this court, throughout the whole match, on the highest level of performance,” said Djokovic, who was broken in the final game of each set, including with an anticlimactic double-fault on match point after fans shouted during the Serb’s ser-

vice motion. “It’s normal that you have ups and downs.” Nadal ensured that he, not Djokovic, will be ranked No. 1 today. And in the process, Nadal once again prevented six-time major champion Djokovic from completing a career Grand Slam. “Sorry for him today. I think he deserves to win this tournament,” Nadal said. “I am sure he will do it in the future.” Djokovic had won their four most recent matches, including on clay in the best-of-three-set final at Rome last month, but beating Nadal in the best-of-five format at the French Open is a whole other matter. Nadal also beat Djokovic in the 2012 final, and the 2013 semifinals. In all, Nadal leads Djokovic 6-0 at the French Open, 9-3 at major tournaments, and 23-19 in total. No other pair of men has played each other as often. HOWARD FENDRICH (AP)

Murray’s New Coach: After spending his youth being coached by his mother, Andy Murray is turning to another woman to help him defend his Wimbledon title. Murray hired former top-ranked player Amelie Mauresmo, left, as his coach on Sunday, saying the appointment is initially for the grass-court season. “I’m excited by the possibilities of the new partnership and Amelie is someone I have always looked up to and admired,” he said in a statement. “She’s faced adversity plenty of times in her career, but was an amazing player and won major titles, including Wimbledon.” (AP)

A Confident Send-Off for U.S. Americans take off for Brazil after wins in all three warmups

No Easy Task Going by FIFA rankings, the Americans’ Group G was the most difficult to come out of December’s draw. But in the June rankings issued last week, it became the second-toughest with Germany (No. 2), Portugal (No. 4), the U.S. (No. 13) and Ghana (No. 37) adding to 56. Group D was slightly lower at 54, with Uruguay (No. 7), Italy (No. 9), England (No. 10) and Costa Rica (No. 28). (AP)

The U.S. headed to Brazil with boosted confidence Sunday after going undefeated in its send-off series. Playing only its third match in nine months against a World Cup team, the U.S. defense appeared firmer in a 2-1 win over Nigeria following the decision to start both Jermaine Jones and Kyle Beckerman in midfield. “This game gives us confidence, but the whole send-off series should give us confidence,” defender Matt Besler said Saturday night. “It’s been a grind but at the end of the day, we accomplished everything we set out to do, and that’s to get three wins. That’s really all that matters.” The Americans were scheduled to travel from Jacksonville, Fla., to Miami on Sunday, then board a commercial flight for the roughly nine-hour trip to Sao Paulo, South America’s largest city with a pop-

Their opener is June 16 against Ghana, a team similar in style to African champion Nigeria. “That’s the reason why we played this game, to kind of hopefully see maybe some of the things that Ghana will do,” U.S. forward Jozy Altidore said. “Obviously, it won’t be the same. But we hope we take the things that we did well today to the Ghana game and try to use that to our advantage.” RONALD BLUM (AP)

Rue Winiarczyk, 34, pursued international development at Gallaudet in a graduate program that specializes in deaf services.

All-Inclusive Degree A Gallaudet program strives to increase deaf services abroad Master’s Programs Culture shock is common when students travel abroad, but for Rue Winiarczyk, it shaped her career. Being deaf wasn’t much of an issue for Winiarczyk growing up in

Ontario, Canada, where she attended a school for the deaf and communicated with her deaf parents and sister using sign language. But when she left her undergrad program at Gallaudet University (gallaudet .edu) to travel and visited Panama at 20, Winiarczyk encountered a lack of awareness about deafness that shocked her. “I won’t deny that as a deaf person, I encounter numerous challeng-

es in the U.S. and Canada,” Winiarczyk, now 34, said in an email interview. “But we are fortunate that we have the option to access services that many deaf people, especially those in developing countries, do not have.” Her experience abroad motivated her to finish undergrad and enroll in an M. A. program for international development at Gallaudet, which allowed her to work abroad and

study how to advocate for deaf people around the world. The two-year interdisciplinary program includes general coursework on international development — including economics, international relations and academic research — as well as classes that draw from Gallaudet’s specialties in deaf and disability studies and focus on how to include the deaf in international development Continued on page 18

work. The goal, according to the program’s mission, is to create leaders who will “work toward better systems of inclusion, social justice and human rights for deaf persons, their communities and other marginalized groups around the world.” Key to meeting that mission is a requirement that students obtain internships, both in D.C. during the school year and abroad in the summer. Often, the stints abroad turn into full-time jobs with international NGOs and deaf advocacy groups. The program started as a certificate seven years ago and has graduated 35 master’s students in all, allowing a limited number in each year. The majority of those who attend are deaf, and those who are not should have a background in working with deaf communities, program coordinators say. While most international development programs aim to help students change the world, the one at Gallaudet has set out to transform the development industry itself. Classes focus on how deaf communities can be marginalized in international work when resources such as sign-language interpretation are not provided. When the students go abroad, they often experience firsthand how global development work can inadvertently leave out the needs of the deaf. For her internship, Winiarczyk worked for the Malaysian Federation of the Deaf in Kuala Lumpur before earning her degree in 2010. She now works in Gallaudet’s Office of Research Support and International Affairs. Other students have interned in Argentina, China, Japan, West Africa and even North Korea. Often, students land in a new country and find local organizations ill-equipped to work with a deaf employee. Sarah Houge had no issues during her internship with an all-deaf group in West Africa. But three years after graduating from the master’s program in 2010, she worked with UNICEF in Bhutan and found not a single American Sign Language interpreter available in the country

to help her do her job. She communicated with her coworkers by typing and through a volunteer from Australia who, like Houge, knew Australian sign language. “It was a fascinating process and very inspiring to see everyone willing to accommodate each other to make sure communication was happening,” Houge, 37, said in an email interview. Organizations have started becoming more inclusive in recent years, a shift prompted in part by the United Nations in 2006, when it adopted a set of rights for persons with disabilities. That has generated a demand for the sort of skills Gallaudet grads have: the ability to train organizations to be more inclusive of deaf and disabled people. “We’ve got people now wanting to know about inclusion policies. For our students, it’s great,” says associate professor Amy Wilson, coordinator of the international program. While other development programs may touch on disability issues as part of their overall curriculum, Gallaudet is guided by the needs of deaf and other communities. Deaf people still face discrimination in many parts of the world, and are sometimes denied education

Some of the most lasting work they might do is teaching members of the community rudimentary gestures and basic signs. “Having disability come first makes us all ‘think inclusive’ from the very beginning,” says Anais Keenan, 24, who graduated from the program in May. “Gallaudet is one of the only international development programs in the country where understanding deafness disability is just as important as understanding development.” Gallaudet wasn’t the obvious choice for Keenan, who says she grew up “mainstreamed” attend-

ing nondeaf schools and getting by with a hearing aid. She learned sign language for the first time in college and hadn’t met another deaf person until she was 20. But she was attracted to the program because it was based in D.C., more affordable than her other options (the two-year program costs roughly $30,000, but grants are available to offset tuition), and offered her the chance to immerse herself in deaf culture.

Keenan, who studied journalism in undergrad, plans to use her graduate degree to work with international development organizations to improve communication and get away from what she calls “jargon speak.” “I like to joke that I’m actually a perfect fit for the job — I’ve been studying how to communicate with people all my life,” she says. Her internship with Mobility International USA, which took her to three countries unfamiliar to her — Germany, Kenya and Belgium — presented a host of challenges, but it was nothing Keenan felt unprepared to handle. “Deaf people are well adapted to figuring out ways to communicate by any means possible,” she says. President and chief executive of Adventist HealthCare, a Gaithersburg, Md.-based health-care services provider. TERRY FORDE grew up helping his father run a gas station in Minnesota. The experience, he says, taught him the importance of hard work and treating people with respect. After an internship at a hospital, Forde realized he wanted to enter the health-care industry. He started out in the accounting department of a small hospital, and quickly rose to be a director and then chief financial officer. He then went from chief financial officer to president of a hospital, before serving as chief operating officer at Adventist HealthCare, an organization tied to Forde’s roots in faith. He is now set to take the helm.

How have you grown most as a leader?

Valuing and appreciating others. As a leader, you can’t do it all. You have to rely on really good people to help you accomplish your goals and vision as an organization. You have to help develop talented people around you that help you see the vision through. I also learned to listen to feedback and input from people who have good ideas and suggestions. Health care is full of committed employees who care a lot about patients.

Jeff Hancock, 37

For more information,visit lis.cua.edu or call 202-319-5085.

SALARY: $80,000

WHAT HE DOES: Hancock created all

the recipes for the beers of DC Brau, the first packaging brewery in the District since 1956, which he co-founded with Brandon Skall in 2011. Unlike a brewpub, which makes beer and serves it on site, usually with food, a packaging brewery creates and bottles beers to sell at grocery stores and restaurants. Hancock oversees a team of brewers who make the beer by heating, drying, cracking, seeping, boiling and fermenting varying amounts of barley, water, hops and yeast. He also troubleshoots around the brewery and represents his recipes — which he calls “my babies” — at beer tastings and events. These days he also handles more managerial stuff, like payroll. DC Brau now has 20 employees (up from the two founders and Hancock’s wife) and is set to make 10,000 barrels of beer this year (up from 1,500 the first year).

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA The Catholic University of America admits students of any race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, age, or disability. For disability accommodations, contact us at the number above.

JASON HORNICK (FOR EXPRESS)

POSITION: Head brewer and cofounder, DC Brau Brewing Co. (3178-B Bladensburg Road NE; 202-621-8890, dcbrau.com)

TRANSFORMING LIVES

Jeff Hancock co-founded DC Brau in 2011, after years of work in the beer industry.

what he did was grunt work — hauling bags of ingredients, milling malted barley. He later worked for two breweries in Ann Arbor, Mich., and came back to the D.C. area to work for Flying Dog Brewery (4607 Wedgewood Blvd., Frederick; 301-694-7899, flyingdogbrewery. com) in Frederick, Md. A friend introduced him to Skall, who was interested in starting a packaging brewery and had the business experience Hancock lacked. The two men raised $600,000 from 26 private investors, got Skall’s father, a lawyer, to do some paperwork and have never looked back. DC Brau was named the fifth-fastest growing brewery in the U.S. by business news site The Street in 2013. “It’s a good problem to have when you can’t brew enough beer,” Hancock says.

STEAL THIS JOB

HOW HE GOT THE JOB: Hancock

was working for his father’s homeimprovement company in 2001 when he decided he wanted to get into brewing. At the time, he was making frequent trips to a brewpub in Baltimore, where he could watch the staff making beer as he drank with friends. “I thought, ‘How cool would that be? Even on your worst days, you’re brewing beer for a living,’” he says. So with no prior experience with beer (besides drinking it), Hancock asked for an apprenticeship at Franklins Restaurant and Brewery (5123 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville; 301-927-2740, franklins brewery.com) in Hyattsville, where he worked for no pay — just experience, food and drink — for two years. A lot of

WHO WOULD WANT THIS JOB:

People who like beer and like working with their hands would make great brewers. Brewing also requires attention to detail, because the tanks that hold the beer must be squeaky-clean, lest they grow bacteria. “You can come up with great recipes in your head, and they could win medals or awards, but if you’re not keeping your brewery clean,” the beers won’t taste right, Hancock says. Brewing is more about technical prowess than natural talent, he says.

So while a good sense of smell (and taste) can come in handy, even more important are neat-freak tendencies. HOW YOU CAN GET THIS JOB:

Home-brewing is great practice. But packaging breweries and brewpubs operate on a larger scale, so home-brewing alone won’t prepare you for a full-time job, Hancock says. As craft beer’s popularity rises, there are more opportunities for wannabe brewers. Consider finding an unpaid apprenticeship like Hancock. To get one, ask around at local brewpubs. Or you could start off at a packaging brewery in a low-level job, such as a technician on the bottling line, and work your way up. Or you could attend a brewing school or get a brewing certificate at a university. Hancock took a distance course from the Siebel Institute of Technology & World Brewing Academy (siebelinstitute.com) in Chicago. If you want to start your own brewery, bone up on business skills, or find a market-savvy partner like Hancock did. And you’ll have to make a few sacrifices. “Be ready to take a severe pay cut, work long hours hunched over in a wet environment, and lift 55 pounds [of ingredients] repeatedly,” Hancock says. The payoff is in the pour. Hancock loves going to a restaurant and ordering a “physical, tangible” drink that he created. “That feeling never gets old,” he says. LIZ ESSLEY WHYTE (FOR EXPRESS)

HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ Is Its Most-Watched Show “Game of Thrones” has overtaken “The Sopranos” as HBO’s most popular series, the network announced Thursday. Entertainment Weekly reports “Thrones” takes in an average of 18.4 million viewers per episode across all devices, while an average of 18.2 million tuned in to “The Sopranos’ ” most popular season, in 2002. In a statement posted on Saturday on its website, Marvel announced it has tapped “Bring It On” director Peyton Reed to direct “Ant-Man,” after planned director Edgar Wright left the project over creative differences. The film, which stars Paul Rudd as the title’s con artist and tiny superhero, is still slated for a July 17, 2015, release. (EXPRESS) CASTING

Alan Alda Will Star in Nicholas Sparks Film

Deadline reports that Alan Alda, of “M.A.S.H.” fame, will play the lead in “The Longest Ride,” the next big-screen adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel. Alda will play a man who reflects on his lost love after a car crash leaves him injured. George Tillman Jr., who helmed “Soul Food” in 1997, will direct. (EXPRESS)

Taye Diggs can claim an actor’s version of scoring a hat trick: He’s worked with a trio of television’s most innovative writer-producers. Diggs, who visited David E. Kelley’s “Ally McBeal” as attorney Jackson Duper and played Dr. Sam Bennett on Shonda Rhimes’ “Private Practice,” is starring in a new drama, “Murder in the First,” cocreated by veteran Steven Bochco. “There’s something to be said for putting out in the universe that which you want to claim. It’s happened to me three times,” he said. In the latest instance, Diggs, whose résumé includes “Rent” and other Broadway productions, was eager to be part of a project “where it’s about relationships and not just catching crooks and jumping over buses and whatnot,” said Diggs, 43. “Murder in the First,” despite the procedural-sounding title, turned out to be just such an opportunity. It debuts on TNT at 10 p.m. today. Diggs’ character is San Francisco police homicide Detective Terry English, who’s paired with fellow detective Hildy Mulligan (Kathleen Robertson). The officers are admirably dedicated but have more to their lives than work. Terry’s burden is a tragic one, the terminal illness of his wife (Anne-Marie Johnson). Hildy is a single mom who,

The series crisscrosses between the detectives’ off-duty lives and their efforts to crack two killings with a high-profile link, a Silicon Valley whiz kid who takes arrogance to a new level. If viewers are hooked, the drama will be back with another case to solve. Diggs, for one, was quickly sold on the concept of “Murder in the First” and agreed to temporarily pull up stakes from New York City.

For his new book, “Carsick,” John Waters — yes, the very same John Waters of “Hairspray” and “Cry-Baby” — hitchhiked from Baltimore to San Francisco and recorded the collection of characters he met. Among them: an indie band on tour, an animal rescuer and a handful of skeptical police officers. Waters will share the motivation behind his journey, hopefully along with some travel tips, at Sixth and I. Sixth and I Historic Synagogue, 600 I St. NW; Wed., 7 p.m., $30; 202-4083100, sixthandi.org. (Gallery Place)

Dine-N-Dash Browse the Penn Quarter dining scene in what might be the easiest open house ever devised. You’ll start the evening at one of the event’s designated restaurants, including Pepe, the Partisan, Jaleo and Proof. From there, you tour the restaurants at your pace. Dine-N-Dash’s proceeds go to World Central Kitchen, which finds solutions to world hunger.

‘Pretty Little Liars’ (FAM) The Season 5 opener finds the Liars dealing with the aftermath of Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse, below left) revelations and Ezra’s shooting and coming to the realization that “A” is closer than ever. As Aria (Lucy Hale, below right) stands watch over Ezra in a hospital, the Liars set a trap to flush out “A” that snares an unlikely party.

James Blake You could call James Blake an electronic or dubstep artist, but neither of these descriptions exactly captures his particular bluesy sound. Blake stands apart from his electronica peers thanks to his R&B-laced voice, which lends lightness to his richly textured tracks. He told The Washington Post last week that his next album, set to drop later this year, will be something completely different, so this show might be your last opportunity to hear this version of Blake. Glue-gun aficionados take note: The American Art Museum is holding a craft night — but it’s not of the summer camp potholder-making variety. There’s also live music courtesy of area rock band Brent & Co. to help get your creative juices flowing. Smithsonian Ameri-

Let’s make one thing very clear: Yes, “Avenue Q” is a musical with puppets; no, it is most definitely not for children. The show replaces the alphabet songs and counting games with such songs as “Everyone’s a Little Bit Racist,” “The Internet Is for Porn” and “Schadenfreude.” One thing’s for sure, it does crass well: “Avenue Q” won three Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in 2003.

‘22 Jump Street’ FRIDAY | 2012’s “21 Jump Street” surprised critics and audiences alike by being way more clever than the usual summer comedy fare. The movie’s sequel looks to be a repeat offender. Our goofball cops, played by Jonah Hill, right, and Channing Tatum, far right, haven’t grown up, but now they’re college students. That’s their story, anyway.

“The Internet simply can’t help but applaud the courage of a young man armed with nothing but pepper spray.” — MOLLY McHUGH AT DAILYDOT.COM understands why supporters have purchased every item on the registry of Jon Meis, and paid for his entire wedding and honeymoon. Meis, a 22-year-old engineering student who volunteers as a security guard at Seattle Pacific University, stopped a campus shooter Thursday. The attack left one dead and two injured. When redditors discovered Meis is getting married in two weeks, the Internet gathered together to thank him in the only way it saw possible: by giving him a wedding to remember.

“So who is really drawing my comic strip? Me? A second grader? Someone else?” — @STEPHANPASTIS alludes to the secret guest artist

for his “Pearls Before Swine” comic. Legendary “Calvin and Hobbes” creator Bill Watterson, who retired from the business in 1995, returned to the comic section last week. Pastis reached out to the famously reclusive artist, and the two collaborated on three days of story lines for the syndicated “Pearls” strip. Although it was kept secret, fans of Watterson easily recognized his signature style and wit.
