Unknowing Passengers Get View They Didn’t Expect Stockholm train driver Martin Akersten said Sunday that he and more than a dozen other drivers have started wearing skirts in the summer to protest against the train company’s uniform policy, which doesn’t allow shorts. Arriva, the company that runs the train line, said it wants its staff to look “nice and proper,” but it can’t stop men from wearing “women’s clothes” because it would be discrimination. Trayvon Martin Murder Trial Starts President Barack Obama will meet Peru’s President Ollanta Humala on Tuesday at the White House to discuss completion of the TransPacific Partnership Agreement.

Apple Shows Off Changes Apple is expected to reveal a digital radio service and changes to the software behind iPhones and iPads on Monday as the company opens its annual conference for software developers.

Mob Boss’ Trial Begins The opening statements in the murder trial of accused Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger will be heard Wednesday, federal prosecutors said last week.

Sanford, Fla. George Zimmerman’s lead attorney will be walking a fine line as he tries to convince jurors that his client didn’t murder Trayvon Martin: He needs to show why Zimmerman felt threatened by the African-American teenager while avoiding the appearance that either he or his client is racist. Because there is no dispute that Zimmerman shot Martin, 17, during a fight Feb. 26, 2012, Mark O’Mara must convince the jury that Zimmerman pulled his 9 mm handgun and fired a bullet into the Miami-area high school student’s chest because he feared for his life and that the fear was caused by Martin’s actions, not his race. Jury selection begins Monday in the second-degree murder trial, which is expected to last about six weeks. Martin’s killing drew worldwide attention as it sparked a national debate about race, equal justice under the law and gun control. If convicted, Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, could get a life sentence. Under Florida law, Zimmerman, 29, could lawfully shoot Martin in self-defense if it was necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm. O’Mara has to be careful how he

Zimmerman’s lawyers will have to walk a tight line of defense

George Zimmerman, right, listens to defense attorneys Mark O’Mara, left, and Don West at a pretrial hearing Saturday in Sanford, Fla.

What’s Ahead A judge has already ruled that defense attorneys’s opening statements won’t be able to mention Trayvon Martin’s past marijuana use, suspension from school and past fighting, although the judge left open the possibility that the defense could try again later if prosecutors attempt to portray Martin as an angelic kid. Jurors will also want to hear from George Zimmerman, but his attorneys should wait to see how their case unfolds before putting him on the stand, said Randy McClean, an Orlandoarea defense attorney. (AP)

characterizes Martin, said Randy McClean, an Orlando-area defense attorney. “Mr. O’Mara’s challenge is to show Trayvon wasn’t profiled.” The challenge for prosecutors trying to get a second-degree murder conviction, meanwhile, is that they must prove that while Zimmerman’s actions weren’t premeditated, they demonstrated a “depraved mind” that didn’t consider the threat his actions had toward human life. McClean and another Orlando defense attorney, David Hill, predicted that prosecutors will attack Zimmerman, who was employed at a mortgage risk management firm,

as a frustrated, would-be police officer who had a chip on his shoulder. Zimmerman had studied criminal justice at a community college and had volunteered to run his community’s neighborhood watch program. “The state’s narrative is going to be ... Zimmerman was a powerful neighborhood watchman, a wannabe officer who liked to use his authority,” McCLean said. Prosecutors have refused to comment about the case. “We want to make sure this trial is tried in a courtroom and not outside a courtroom,” said lead prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda. Officials: Gunman’s attack on his family spurred violent spree Santa Monica, Calif. PRESERVATION

Misplaced History Last week, retiring Lycoming College President James Douthat found a historical document that had been lost for 24 years — a certificate signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. The certificate named the Williamsport, Pa., college’s founder, Benjamin Crever, a Civil War chaplain. (AP)

A woman who was critically wounded in Friday’s Santa Monica shooting rampage died Sunday, bringing the number of victims killed by the gunman to five. Marcela Franco, 26, was riding in a vehicle driven by her father, Santa Monica College campus groundskeeper Carlos Navarro Franco, 68, who also was killed. Standing next to the weapons and ammo found at multiple

crime scenes, police Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks said at a Saturday news conference that the “cowardly murderer” planned the attack and was capable of firing 1,300 rounds. Police said the heavily armed man’s attack against his father and brother led to the violence in Santa Monica’s streets. Neighbors watched in shock as the gunman shot at his father’s house and it went up in flames. He then opened fire on a woman driving by, wounding her, and carjacked another woman. He directed her to drive to the college, ordering her to stop along the way so he could shoot at a city bus and people on the street. Two people on the bus were injured.

The gunman enters the Santa Monica College on Friday in Santa Monica.

Police had received multiple 911 calls by the time the mayhem shifted to the college. Once on campus, the gunman fired away on foot. Sur-

veillance photos show him strolling into the library with an assault-style rifle and firing at least 70 rounds before being fatally shot after two police officers and a campus cop took him out. The 23-year-old gunman was connected to the home that went up in flames after the first shootings, Seabrooks said, though she added he was enrolled at Santa Monica College in 2010. She did not name the suspect. Police sources told the Los Angeles Times that two bodies were found in the home — Samir Zawahri, 55, the father of the alleged gunman, and one of Zawahri’s adult sons. Turkish PM Demands Riots End Leader takes tough tone in publicity blitz across Turkey Ankara, Turkey In a series of increasingly belligerent speeches to cheering supporters Sunday, Turkey’s prime minister called for an end to the 10-day anti-government protests that have spread across the country, saying those who do not respect the government will pay. Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his patience was running out with the protesters, who have occupied Istanbul’s main Taksim Square for more than a week and have held demonstrations across the country. Erdogan’s tone could inflame

tensions, with tens of thousands of anti-government protesters in the country’s largest city, Istanbul, and thousands in the capital, Ankara, remaining on the streets. Protests have been held in 78 cities across the country since May 31, sparked by a violent police crackdown on a peaceful protest against the redevelopment of Taksim Square. Three people have died. They have since morphed into a general denunciation of what many see as Erdogan’s increasingly authoritarian ways after a decade in power. “We showed patience but our patience has its limits,” Erdogan told supporters on Sunday, in the third of about seven speeches given through the afternoon and evening. Libya’s army chief of staff resigned on Sunday as an elite military unit took control of a base of pro-government militias after clashes killed 31 people in the eastern city of Benghazi. The developments underlined the security chaos in Libya more than a year and a half after longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi was deposed in a civil war. The violence broke out Saturday when protesters stormed a base belonging to Libya Shield, a grouping of militias aligned with the military. The protesters were demanding that the militias leave their camp and submit to Libya’s security forces. It remains unclear which side fired first. (AP)

N. Korea Begins Early Dialogue With South Seoul, S. Korea Government delegates from North and South Korea held a marathon session of preparatory talks Sunday at a “truce village” on their heavily armed border to set the ground rules for higher-level talks on easing animosity and restoring stalled rapprochement projects. The meeting at Panmunjom, where the armistice agreement that ended fighting in the 1950-

53 Korean War was signed, was the first of its kind on the Korean Peninsula in more than two years. The delegates began discussions Sunday morning, stretching into roughly 17 hours of talks. The low-level meetings paved the way for the announcement by South Korea that the ministers of each country’s department for cross-border affairs will meet Wednesday in Seoul. Such talks haven’t happened since 2007.

Backstory This year, North Korea has threatened nuclear war, called the Korean War armistice void, closed a jointly run factory park and vowed to produce more nuclear bomb fuel. That followed a North Korean nuclear test and long-range rocket launches. Any dialogue between North and South is an improvement on the belligerence of recent months. (AP)

The South Korean Unification Ministry said Monday that officials will discuss the resumption of a stalled jointly-run factory park and other inter-Korean projects. The two-day gathering beginning Wednesday marks a breakthrough of sorts after years of animosity. Seoul said it will send its top official for inter-Korean affairs while Pyongyang only said it’s sending a senior-level official. FOSTER KLUG AND YOUK YUNG LEE (AP)

ia Beltway drivers save even more time on their commute.” While the Express Lanes’ speed limit will go up to 65 mph, the Beltway speed limit will still be 55 mph,

which could leave drivers unclear on which signs to obey. In pitching the higher speed limit as a way to shorten commutes, McDonnell is clearly hoping it will draw more drivers to the Express Lanes. The lanes confused drivers when they opened in November and early volume did not meet projections, although daily use increased during the early months of 2013. Users pay a variable toll, depending on the length of the trip and the amount of traffic — generally ranging from about 50 cents to $5. New signs with the speed increase should be posted by June 24, depending on the weather.

Cover Story

NSA Insider Steps Forward The past two days have been packed with coverage about domestic surveillance. I have no idea what I’m hearing. That’s not a question. So let’s start from the beginning. Shortly after the 9/11 attacks, Congress approved the USA Patriot Act, which gave the government wide powers to collect information on Americans. Separately, President George W. Bush also authorized the National Security Agency to conduct a classified wiretapping program to eavesdrop on U.S. citizens, read their emails and collect phone records — without warrants. In 2005, The New York Times revealed that program, leading to a change: A judge has to sign off on such activity. Then last week, The Guardian newspaper published a classified court document from April that authorized the government to seize Verizon’s phone records daily — an estimated 3 billion phone calls a day. A program that the government had called narrow was suddenly revealed as vast. Under Bush and then President Barack Obama, the National Security Agency built a colossal database of U.S. phone calls.

Is that it? Nope. A day later, the Guardian and The Washington Post revealed another classified spying program, code-named PRISM, which allowed the NSA and FBI to tap into the servers of such U.S. Internet giants as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook and AOL. PRISM allowed the government to seize conversations: emails, video chats, instant messages and more.

Contractor turned whistleblower, 29, admits to leaking news of program

Yes.

But President Barack Obama said Friday that Americans are not targeted by this program.

Washington Edward Snowden, a 29-year-old former undercover CIA employee, unmasked himself Sunday as the principal source of recent Washington Post and Guardian disclosures about topsecret National Security Agency programs. “I’m not going to hide,” he said. S n o w d e n ’s Snowden name surfaced as top intelligence officials and Congress pushed back against the journalists responsible for revealing the existence of surveillance programs last week, calling for an investigation. Snowden, who has contracted for the NSA and works for the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton, denounced what he described as systematic surveillance of innocent citizens. Snowden, who spoke from Hong Kong, where he has been staying,

The NSA appears to be building a database of Internet traffic. Experts believe that’s why the NSA has been building a million-square-foot data center near Salt Lake City. According to Wired magazine, its storage capacity is measured in what are known as yottabytes. A yottabyte is more data than what moves through the entire Internet in a single year.

Does this apply to Americans?

Washington is collecting a massive trove of data from Internet users in collaboration with Web giants — including funneling information from Google’s data centers, such as this one in South Carolina.

CONNIE ZHOU/GOOGLE/AP

What You Need to Know

What do they do with that stuff?

said that he understands the risks of disclosing the information, but that he felt it was important. Asked whether he believed his disclosures would change anything, he said: “I think they already have. Everyone, everywhere now understands how bad things have gotten — and they’re talking about it.” Snowden said there wasn’t a sin-

gle event that spurred his decision to leak the information. Snowden said President Barack Obama hasn’t lived up to his pledges of transparency. He blamed a lack of accountability in the Bush administration for continued abuses. The White House could not immediately be reached for comment. BARTON GELLMAN AND AARON BLAKE

That’s true. It comes down to the word “targeted.” The agency can’t target Americans. But targeting is different from collecting. PRISM dumps data into the NSA’s servers — at which point, the government has your information but can still say it hasn’t targeted you.

How is this legal? Officials have said it was approved by a judge and is conducted in accordance with U.S. law.

But the companies are denying all this, right? Sort of. Apple issued a statement saying it had “never heard of PRISM” and does not “provide any government agency with direct access to our servers.” Others issued similar statements. That’s not surprising: PRISM is a code-name and it does not require direct access to servers.

(THE WASHINGTON POST )

Is this newly detailed surveillance keeping us safe?

“For me, it is literally — not figuratively — literally gut-wrenching to see this happen because of the huge, grave damage it does to our intelligence capabilities.” — JA ME S CL A PPER, DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE, IN A WEEKEND INTERVIEW WITH NBC, DISCUSSING THE MEDIA REPORTS AND LEAKS ON HIGHLY CLASSIFIED INTELLIGENCE PROGRAMS

“It’s unclear to me that we’ve developed any intelligence through the metadata program that’s led to the disruption of plots that we couldn’t obtain through other programs.” — SEN. M A RK UDALL , D - COLO., ON CNN’S “STATE OF THE UNION” SUNDAY, DISCUSSING THE COLLECTION OF AMERICANS’ PHONE RECORDS

The government says yes. But it’s impossible to thoroughly verify.

So what’s the scandal? Americans have gotten a glimpse at a government surveillance machine that has been churning for years. The stories are important not because they necessarily show illegal government spying. They reveal what the government has made legal. MATT APUZZO (AP)

Jayson Werth, right, went 2-for-3 in the first game of the Nats’ doubleheader.

In 12 games this season, Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg is 3-5 with a 2.54 ERA. He hasn’t pitched since May 31 and is scheduled to make his next start June 16.

Strasburg Eyes His Return All-Star right-hander scheduled to make next start on June 16 Nationals After Stephen Strasburg threw a bullpen session Saturday without pain in his strained right lat, the Nationals scheduled him to make his next start June 16, the first day he is eligible to come off the disabled list. “I didn’t feel any irritation,” Strasburg said. “Arm felt strong. I was just going out there and letting it eat and seeing how it feels. It felt good. I’m just going to keep going.” Strasburg fired a standard, between-start bullpen session with

pitching coach Steve McCatty hovering behind him Saturday. He will pitch a simulated game Tuesday in Colorado, putting him on schedule to face the Indians in Cleveland on June 16. “He had a great bullpen, threw the heck out of the ball,” manager Davey Johnson said. “Had no symptoms of the injury. So he’s good to go.” Strasburg had tried to throw a bullpen session Wednesday, but the Nationals placed him on the disabled list when he still felt stiffness in his strained lat. On May 31 in Atlanta, stiffness in his lat, a muscle in the lower back that helps shoulder acceleration, forced him from a start after two innings. “I didn’t really have any doubts

Average runs scored by the Nationals in games started by Stephen Strasburg, the eighth lowest run support in the majors.

I was going to feel good, just based on how I was feeling the last two days,” Strasburg said. Rain delays the previous two days muddled the Nationals’ rotation. Gio Gonzalez pitched Saturday, with Jordan Zimmermann and Nate Karns throwing in Sunday’s doubleheader. Even with an off day Monday, the Nationals’ starter for Wednesday against the Rockies is still uncertain. The Nationals are “most likely”

going to call up veteran right-hander Ross Ohlendorf to make that start, according to a person familiar with the team’s plans. Ohlendorf would have pitched Saturday if not for the rainouts Thursday and Friday. Ohlendorf started Friday at Triple-A Syracuse, allowing two runs on one hit and three walks over five innings. The outing put him on schedule to make the Wednesday start in Colorado. Ross Detwiler will likely return to the Nationals’ rotation Thursday in Cleveland. On the disabled list retroactive to May 16 with a right oblique strain, Detwiler had a rehab outing at Single-A Potomac on Saturday. He allowed one run on seven hits in 3 2 ⁄ 3 innings. Games All-Star outfielder Bryce Harper has missed this season. According to manager Davey Johnson, Harper said the swelling was down in his ailing left knee. The slugger will visit orthopedist James Andrews today for a second opinion on the knee that has been troublesome ever since he ran into the wall at Dodger Stadium on May 13. (AP)

Nats’ Bats Show Up in 7-0 Victory Nationals Jordan Zimmermann pitched seven scoreless innings to get his ninth win, tying him for most in the majors, and the Washington Nationals’ bats showed some rare signs of life Sunday in a 7-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. The Nationals, who hadn’t scored more than three runs for seven straight games, managed to get five across in one inning.

Late Game: The second game of the Nationals’ doubleheader against the Twins ended after Express’ deadline. For complete coverage, visit washingtonpost.com.

Zimmermann (9-3) did the rest, allowing only two hits while striking out eight with a season-high 111 pitches. His ERA dropped to 2.00, and he’s tied with Boston’s Clay Buchholz, Arizona’s Patrick Corbin and St. Louis’ Adam Wainwright atop the wins list. Ian Desmond had three hits and two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games. Anthony Rendon had two hits and three RBIs, and the Nationals were 5-for-10 with runners in scoring position. JOSEPH WHITE (AP)

Horse Racing Once again, the “Test of the Champion” proved otherwise. A day after Palace Malice pulled off an upset in the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown, the race for a championship is wide open now that each of the classics was won by a different 3-year-old. “Everyone goes into the rest of the summer and fall with similar resumes,” trainer Todd Pletcher said Sunday morning, declaring that his Belmont winner is “feeling very good. “I don’t think there’s a clearcut leader.” In a Belmont feat ur ing a rematch between Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Preakness winner Oxbow, it was one of Pletcher’s record five entries that handled the 1½-mile marathon the best. TV Lineup MLB (7 P.M., ESPN) In nine games, John Lackey has a 2.79 ERA but is only 3-5. The Red Sox right-hander takes the mound against the Rays in an AL East battle. ORIOLES (7:05 P.M., MASN) The Angels’ Jered Weaver will make his fifth start of the season when the Orioles host Los Angeles in the opener of a three-game series.

French Open Rafael Nadal’s final shot at the French Open was a typically ferocious fallaway forehand, and when it landed for a winner, his momentum and emotions sent him splaying backward onto the clay he loves. The champion quickly bounded to his feet and headed for the net at a trot. It was time to collect his latest Roland Garros trophy. Nadal became the first man to win eight titles at the same Grand Slam tournament when he beat fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in Sunday’s final, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3. The King of Clay broke the men’s record for match wins at Roland Garros, where he improved to 59-1, with his lone defeat against Robin Soderling in the fourth round in 2009. For fans enthralled by Nadal’s semifinal victory over top-ranked Novak Djokovic, Sunday’s final may have seemed anticlimactic. But not for Nadal.

Meanwhile …

Rafael Nadal became the first man to win eight titles at the same Grand Slam.

His path to the Roland Garros title was more arduous than usual. He fell behind in each of his first three matches and needed a fifthset comeback to beat Djokovic. And the latest title was espe-

Orioles Hammer Rays’ Moore Baseball J.J. Hardy, Adam Jones, Alexi Casilla and Nick Markakis had two RBIs apiece and the Baltimore Orioles hammered eight-game winner Matt Moore in beating the Tampa Bay Rays 10-7 on Sunday. Baltimore, held to one run and six hits in losing the first two games of the series, had 16 hits Sunday. Moore (8-2) allowed career highs of nine runs and 12 hits over five innings in his second consecutive loss. The left-hander was coming off a subpar start last Tuesday in which he gave up six runs over two-plus innings in a 10-1 loss at Detroit.

Adam Jones hit his 12th home run of the year Sunday against the Rays.

Chris Tillman (6-2) gave up three runs and four hits in six innings. The Baltimore right-hander has won all five of his road deci-

sions this year. Jim Johnson entered in the ninth with two on and two outs and gave up an RBI single to Jose Labaton that got Tampa Bay to 10-7 — they trailed 9-1 in the fourth. The right-hander then retired Kelly Johnson on an infield pop fly to get his 21st save. Johnson had a run-scoring hit in the sixth for the Rays, who lost for just the fourth time in the past 14 games. The Orioles took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI doubles by Hardy and Jones. Manny Machado was hit by a pitch near the knee but stayed in the game and scored from first on Hardy’s hit. MARK DIDTLER (AP)

“I want to know who you are and what you do before we talk too much about what can be done differently.”

You say one of your skills is building teams. What does it take to make an effective one?

I want to know who you are and what you do before we talk too much about what can be done differently. It’s then important to give people the bigger picture of what they’re doing: Here’s what we’re trying to accomplish. Let’s look at what you are doing now. Where do you run into problems? Through that process, you can come to conclusions. In many cases, I might feel like I do already have the solutions but it’s important for people to realize that they’re being heard and their thoughts are being considered before we move forward. What are the threats to that process?

It’s usually if you start working with someone and they tell you, “Why should I do anything differently?” What I’ve found there is they’ve gone

thing for so long that they’re not ready to do anything differently. What’s the most important leadership quality you need to bring to that process?

It’s important to have the best interest of the company. It’s not about me. It’s important that people understand that you want to be honest with them and that you’re not trying to manipulate them. People can sense that and it doesn’t work effectively. What are some of your leadership qualities?

Law & Academia Criminal justice doctoral programs put cutting-edge research into practice In criminal justice doctoral programs, the students become one of two separate yet equally important types of professionals: the academics, who want to teach; and the pure researchers, who want to work for the government or think tanks. These are their stories. (Chung chung.) Jane Palmer was one of these doctoral students until last month, when she graduated with a Ph.D. f rom A mer ica n Universit y ’s School of Justice, Law and Society (American.edu/spa/djls), which is one of three schools in the D.C. area — along with George Mason University (Cls.gmu.edu) and the University of Maryland, College Park (Ccjs.umd.edu) — that offer graduate degrees in criminal justice or criminology.

Students in these programs study topics such as the philosophy of justice, government, public policy, sociology and advanced statistics. Through a combination of coursework, assistantships and dissertation work, they research the real problems of law and order, aiming to reduce crime and violence while working directly with law enforcement officials, offenders, victims and policymakers.

Palmer’s passion for helping victims was born while she was advocating for women at the Domestic Violence Court in Chicago as part of her master’s degree in social work. “I became concerned that women who sought assistance from the court were at times in more danger for seeking assistance.” At AU, Palmer drew from her real-world experience to con-

duct research on violence against women and children. Some of her work focused on the difficulty of prosecuting those who harm Alaskan and American Indian woman. Tribes have historically been unable to prosecute non-Native offenders on their land, but the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 gave them limited powers to do so when women are attacked or abused. “Everybody saw this as a huge success — passing this legislation — but then you’re sort of like, OK, celebration’s over, this law got passed, how do you implement this?” Palmer says. While in school Palmer worked on a congressionally mandated study to figure that out. “I hope to be able to assist someday to help communities implement laws after they get passed.” There is a real need for this kind of research in the law enforcement community. Over the past 20 years, the Justice Department has increasingly relied on research to enforce laws fairly. “It’s like a moving tide toward reliance on research,” says Laurie Robinson, who served as an assistant attorney general for the Justice Department during the Clinton and Obama administrations and is now a professor at the George Mason University School of Criminology, Law and Society.

Criminal justice doctoral students clearly get ample research experience, but they can also hone their teaching skills if they are interested in a professorial path. At American University, Jane Palmer taught courses that allowed her to share her passion for helping abused women and children. While grading final exams for a domestic violence law and policy course she recently taught, Palmer says, “I just really loved reading about everything [my students] have learned this semester and how they’re seeing what roles they might be able to play in addressing issues around domestic policy.” T.K.

Jane Palmer’s research for her doctorate in criminal justice focused on how to protect women and children from violence.

One of the most well-known examples of how research can change the justice system, Robinson says, is the use of DNA to exonerate people who had previously been found guilty of crimes. The research these students are doing is driven by how it will be used in the real world. “There’s a real focus in the classes and in the research on how this all relates to policy, how we can use really good science to help impact criminal justice policy,” says

Career Coach: Playing It Cool In the job search, as in dating, looking desperate is a turnoff Advice Acting desperate has never been an attractive quality in dating relationships, and it’s certainly not attractive to potential employers either. For job seekers — especially new graduates who haven’t yet secured a position — emotions can run high and turn usually calm, collected candidates into needy, overeager individuals. That kind of behavior can keep them from landing a job. I’ve had a handful of students over the years that fall into this group. Their résumés look fantastic, and they pass the first-round interview. Rachel Dratch will get mileage out of some celebrity’s memoir tonight.

PHOTOS BY JOAN MARCUS

That’s Mario Cantone hiding behind the writings of Justin Bieber.

There’s a difference between being a famous author and being a famous person who’s an author. It’s that second group that gets ridiculed in “Celebrity Autobiography.” The comedy show, which started in New York, has a simple concept: A collection of comedians and other funny people get together to read aloud, with straight faces, from books written by celebrities (or their ghostwriters). Boom. Done. On the surface, it seems lazy. After all, the comics don’t even have to write jokes taking potshots at

celebrities. The celebrities do it for them. But Steve Schirripa, who’ll participate in the show’s first D.C. engagement tonight, says it’s not that simple. “Say you’re reading Burt Reynolds’ book, but Loni Anderson also had an autobiography and then Burt Reynolds’ assistant has hers,” he says. “You mix and match ’em. Schirripa Burt Reynolds will say ‘We met on the night of blah blah blah and this happened’ and then Loni Anderson says something completely different happened, and the assistant says something else.” Creators Eugene Pack and Dayle Reyfel match comics with appropri-

ate autobiographies — Schirripa says he’ll read from David Hasselhoff’s “Making Waves” and Joe Namath’s “Namath” this time — and lightly edit the texts to get to the good (read: bad) stuff. “It’s hard to believe what they write. Somebody mentions everything that’s in their refrigerator,” Schirripa says. “People’s takes on what they think is important is really funny.”

He sees it as an alternative to stand-up comedy, particularly for busy actors and comedians who wouldn’t have time to write and rehearse a whole show around their other commitments. With “Celebrity Autobiography,” they can just show up, peruse the book they’ve been given and trust in their comic timing to make it work. Many people who’ve taken part in “Celebrity Autobiography” are pretty famous themselves. Ryan Reynolds, Matthew Broderick and Rita Wilson have been readers, and Mario Cantone and Rachel Dratch will participate in the D.C. show tonight. It should be noted that Dratch has her own autobiography, “Girl Walks Into a Bar.” No word on whether it will ever be included. FIONA ZUBLIN (E XPRESS)

Not Your Usual Comic Flick: Archie’s old Riverdale gang is headed to the big screen. Warner Bros. will produce a live-action film based on the comic’s characters, including Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead. It will be the first feature film for the 72-year-old comic. Directing will be Jason Moore, who helmed the 2012 college musical comedy “Pitch Perfect.” ‘’Glee” writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is writing the script for the film, which he says will be “a quintessential teen movie.” (AP)

Punk music is a dangerous game in some corners of the world, as detailed in the revealing HBO documentary “Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer.” Directed by Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin, and assembled rapidly after a six-month shoot, “Pussy Riot” presents as full a portrait as we’ve seen of the three young women arrested and imprisoned following their protest performance at a Moscow cathedral last year. On Feb. 21, 2012, members of the feminist art collective, colorfully dressed in their trademark jumper dresses, tights and brighthued ski masks, staged a guerrilla HBO

“So you literally just wrote a story over some random dude on a discussion forum who may or may not be credible? A guy who only created his account today. Absolutely no hard evidence?” — COMMENTER FRO2SHORT on BusinessInsider.com questions the validity of a source after the site reported that anonymous Reddit user MistySilver said Microsoft representatives were hanging out on the social news site and voting up positive comments and voting down negative comments about the Xbox One. Microsoft denies it is doing this.

EASY

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may find yourself reverting to old habits, but it’s only because you are trying to avoid something that is actually unavoidable. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You are eager for something big to transpire, and so it shall, once you have put the final piece of the puzzle into place. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may be energized by the bold action taken by another — and when it is your turn, you can surely follow suit. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Take care that you don’t put yourself in harm’s way simply by being careless. With a little effort you can avoid any threat.

Friday’s Solution

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You’ll find yourself standing up and speaking for another who cannot — or will not — speak for himself. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Focus on the goals you have set for yourself and not on those that have been set for you by another. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) The progress required today can be made, but not with your hands tied. You’re going to have to extricate yourself from a bad situation. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) The needs of another are likely to take precedence over your own, at least for a time today. You know how to make things work out well.

Friday’s Solution

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You can get a few friends personally involved in your affairs at this time and beat someone else at his or her own game. This can be fun!

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may be introduced to something that makes a great deal of sense to you right away — even though it means making a few big changes.
