An easier way to get an orange lobster is to cook a regular one

The best part of waking up is when your roof is still attached

Police in New Jersey said they found a lost pet pig near a local Dunkin’ Donuts and named it “Pork Roll.” Neptune Township police said Wednesday they got a call recently about a pig wandering by the doughnut chain. The department joked that an officer was able to “catch the well-fed hog and ... provide him with a job application as our new mascot” before transferring him to the SPCA, where Pork Roll’s owner picked him up. Workers at a Massachusetts supermarket have found a rare orange lobster. Roche Bros. Supermarkets said in a Facebook post on May 29 that workers at its Westborough store found the lobster in a shipment of crustaceans from Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. It has since donated the lobster to the New England Aquarium in Boston. The likelihood of a lobster being orange is about 1 in 30 million. (AP)

A family in Lehigh Acres, Fla., was surprised to be woken up by the sounds of the roof being torn off their house — which wasn’t scheduled for any roof work. WFTX reported Thursday that an address mix-up led workers from Nastar Roofing to start tearing the roof off the wrong house. “I didn’t OK this, I didn’t ask for anyone to do the roof,” said owner Sarah Fritchey. “They just came on our property and began ripping the roof off.” (EXPRESS)

page three Subterranean hometown fan CAPITALS Capitals fan William Chance sounded like a historian of the city’s years of frustration at watching its teams get close, only to falter at the end. “But we have luck on our side,” he predicted as he stood in the Gallery Place Metro station Thursday evening before Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final. “The 1978 Bullets won the championship on this date,” he said. “We’re going to win.” But on a raucous, suspenseful night that would finally bring a championship Chance and other Washington sports fans have been waiting 26 years for, he wouldn’t be joining the sea of red jerseys riding up the escalators to a viewing party outside. He’d spend the night mostly underground, in a bright neon green WMATA vest, pointing to the fare machines. To carry what it said Friday was 35,644 people from Gallery Place between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., after the game, WMATA extended the 11:30 closing time

at three stations around the viewing parties near Capital One Arena. It also augmented regular service by stationing “gap trains” for dispatchers to call in as platforms got crowded. And as it does for major events like inaugurals, which come regularly, and championship games, which do not, WMATA brought in employees like Chance, who usually operates trains on the Green and Yellow lines. As fans streamed past, no one seemed to notice Chance, or even Game 4 hero Greg Walker,

who was also wearing a neon green vest. Walker, who said he usually works at the Greenbelt station, was the Metro worker who opened the gates on Monday to let two Capitals through on their way to the game. One of them, T.J. Oshie, was short 35 cents on his fare card. Walker hadn’t realized they were hockey players. “They were skinny,” he remembered on Friday. But when Capitals fans in the station started chanting, he figured the two were needed

at the game. Oshie scored that night, instead of being stuck in the station. But Walker chuckled when asked how D.C. sports history might have been different had he been working at his usual post. “I didn’t really do anything,” he said. In the depths of a train station, anticipation was building as Chance kept track of the back and forth score through overheard conversations: 1-0, 1-1, 2-1. “Born and raised in D.C. Northwest,” Chance said. “Uptown!” The score was 4-3 when dispatchers asked Chance to check out how large the crowd was at the viewing party in the plaza outside the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter station. As the minutes ticked down to seconds and then to screams, he complained about a branch blocking his view, but punched the air. “Yes! Yes!” A few minutes later, he was back at the end of a platform at Gallery Place, as it began filling up, making a sweeping signal with his hand to tell an approaching train to go slow. “I haven’t gotten into civilian mode,” Chance said. “I’m still working.” KERY MUR AK AMI (EXPRESS)

PARTY TIME

Get ready for a massive Caps parade Washington will herald its first major championship team in 26 years with a parade Tuesday morning to honor the Capitals’ Stanley Cup victory. The parade is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Constitution Avenue and 23rd Street NW, heading east to Seventh Street and culminating with a rally just down Seventh on the Mall. Judging by the thousands who gathered in the Gallery Place area Thursday night to watch the game on giant screens, a massive crowd is expected. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

After crash, could Metro return to automation?

Students to get SmarTrips for free rides

JAMES M. THRESHER (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

TRANSPORTATION It’s been so long since Metro used computers to drive its trains that its operators lack expertise in how to use the technology, and the agency doesn’t know whether automatic trains can comply with new procedures it imposed to protect workers on the tracks, according to agency officials and safety audits. The transit agency has hired the engineering consulting firm Mott MacDonald — at a cost of just over $1 million — to study the potential safety impact of restoring Automatic Train Operation (ATO), which for riders would mean smoother rides, precise positioning at platforms and fewer time-wasting stops and starts. “ATO has advantages. It takes the human error out of train operations in many cases, provided you have a vital system that’s working right. And it can give you more capacity in the tunnel,” said Metro board member Robert C. Lauby, who also is chief safety officer at the Federal Railroad Administration. “But certainly if the system that’s in place is not capable of providing a higher

level of safety, then it’s probably not a good idea. It will come down to the question of, ‘Is the current system able to take care of all the functionalities that are out there that need to be handled in 2018?’ ” The study is due this summer, the agency said. Metro was designed for computer-driven trains, and that’s what was used until the 2009 Red Line crash near Fort Totten. Eight passengers and the train operator were killed when a computerdriven train slammed into the back of a stationary one at an

estimated 49 mph. It remains the deadliest crash in Metro history. Automatic Train Operation was suspended indefinitely following the crash. The ATO system itself was not at fault in the crash, however. Federal investigators determined the issue was a faulty track circuit module. Metro’s signal system uses a network of electrical circuits that communicate the location of trains on the tracks. Faulty circuits can cause a train to “disappear.” FAIZ SIDDIQUI

D.C. students will begin using standard SmarTrip cards this summer to ride public transportation free — a change that city leaders said Friday is intended to make boarding the region’s trains and buses more efficient for the city’s 92,000 public school students. For years, students have used DC One fare cards that have been criticized for being complicated to activate. Private school students who live in D.C. also receive free transit cards to use on buses. The revamped program will cost the city $12.2 million next year. (TWP)

Guilty pleas in AU graduate’s killing 3 admit to manslaughter in 2015 fatal shooting near NW Metro station THE DISTRICT Three District men pleaded guilty Friday in the fatal shooting of a man who was walking near the Shaw-Howard University Metro station in August 2015 when he was caught in the crossfire between members of rival neighborhood gangs. Marcus King, 22, of Northwest, Andrew Dudley, 22, of Northeast and Christopher Proctor, 28, of Northwest each pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of Cleveland native

Matthew Shlonsky, a financial analyst and a 2014 American University graduate. Authorities say that on the afternoon of Aug. 15, 2015, Shlonsky had emerged from an Uber ride near the bustling Seventh and S streets NW on his way to the Howard Theatre to see a show with friends when he was shot. All three men opened fire that afternoon, prosecutors said, and it is not clear whose bullet struck Shlonsky. After the hearing in D.C. Officer in shooting appeals his firing D.C. police terminated Trainer for 2016 killing of man on a motorcycle THE DISTRICT A D.C. police officer the city has decided should be fired for fatally shooting a motorcyclist in 2016 says members of an administrative panel that upheld his punishment unfairly prejudged the case. Officer Brian Trainer also argues that one of the police officials on the tribunal should either have recused himself or disclosed that he had fatally shot a motorist in Virginia in 1996. The assertions are contained in a 50-page appeal to D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham. The chief has until the end of the week to decide whether he will uphold the decision to terminate Trainer for the shooting of 31-year-old Terrence Sterling, or allow the

officer to remain on the force. Trainer shot Sterling during an attempted traffic stop. The department found the shooting to be unjustified. Trainer argued he was in danger. “Officer Trainer’s due process rights have been so gutted that the only remedy” would be clearing the officer, his attorney James W. Pressler Jr. wrote in the appeal, a copy of which he provided to The Washington Post. Pressler wrote that panel members “prosecuted the case” while “shirking their obligation to remain neutral and impartial.” He contends the panel was unfairly influenced by public comments from Mayor Muriel Bowser and Newsham that Trainer should quit. The District reached a $3.5 million settlement with Sterling’s family in February. PETER HERMANN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

at a news conference after the G-7 summit. Trudeau spent most of his time trying to play down divisions between the U.S. and the six other members of the G-7. He said he wanted to work with U.S. negotiators on trade deals and criticized tariffs imposed by Trump. He added, “Canadians, we’re polite, we’re reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around.” Those were fighting words for Trump, who on Twitter accused Trudeau of “false statements” and of being “dishonest & weak.” He didn’t specify what comments he felt were false, but wrote that he had ordered his aides to withdraw from a joint communique the G-7 leaders had agreed to. “The historic and important agreement we all reached at #G7Charlevoix will help make our economies stronger & people more prosperous, protect our democracies, safeguard our environment and protect women & girls’ rights around the world,” he wrote. “That’s what matters.” Trump had earlier held his own news conference during the G-7 summit, saying he had strong personal relationships with Trudeau and other leaders but he believed those countries were ripping off the U.S. through high tariffs. He said he would consider stopping all trade with any country that did not lower or even eliminate tariffs going forward. DAMIAN PALETTA AND JOEL ACHENBACH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Figurine of biblical king unearthed

A 2-inch sculpture of a king’s head from the 9th century B.C. — a period associated with biblical kings — has set off a modern mystery as scholars try to figure out who it is. The figurine was found in 2017 at Abel Beth Maacah, located between the Aramean kingdom in Damascus, the Phoenician city of Tyre, and ancient Israel. Archaeologists say it could be Ben Hadad or Hazael of Damascus, Ahab or Jehu of Israel, or Ithobaal of Tyre. (AP) Nike will not provide cleats to the Iranian World Cup team due to U.S. sanctions

POLITICS President Trump left America’s closest allies in a state of shock and outrage on Sunday after a verbal barrage against Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had just hosted Trump and other leaders from the Group of Seven industrial nations. Trump’s rhetorical assault on Trudeau, characteristically delivered on Twitter, was echoed by two White House advisers. The bizarre aftermath of the G-7 summit in Quebec was a political calculation, meant to show muscularity in advance of the historic summit in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, one of those advisers acknowledged Sunday. “POTUS is not gonna let a Canadian prime minister push him around,” Trump’s chief economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “He is not going to permit any show of weakness on the trip to negotiate with North Korea.” Peter Navarro, another top adviser, intensified the attack on Trudeau on “Fox News Sunday.” “There’s a special place in hell for any foreign leader that engages in bad-faith diplomacy with President Donald J. Trump and then tries to stab him in the back on the way out the door,” Navarro said. Trump took umbrage at remarks Trudeau made Saturday

Cuba shares details of health incident HAVANA Cuba released details Sunday on the latest mysterious health incident involving a U.S. diplomat in the country, saying that Cuban officials learned of the episode late last month when the U.S. said that an embassy official felt ill after hearing “undefined

sounds” in her home in Havana. Cuba said in a statement released by its Foreign Ministry that U.S. officials reported on May 29 that a female embassy official had reported experiencing “health symptoms” after hearing the sounds in her home two days earlier. Cuba said it sent investigators to the home. They found no potential source of a sound and were not granted access to the official. U.S. officials said Friday that

The two individuals are considered “potentially new cases” but have not yet been “medically confirmed,” a State Department official said. Two other officials said the individuals have been

brought for testing to the University of Pennsylvania, where doctors have been evaluating, treating and studying Americans affected in Cuba last year as well as almost 10 new possible cases from a U.S. Consulate in China. If confirmed by doctors to have the same condition, the two individuals would mark the 25th and 26th confirmed patients from the incidents in Cuba, which have been deemed “specific attacks” by the U.S. government. The U.S. has said it doesn’t know who is behind them, but has argued Cuba is responsible for protecting all diplomats on its soil. Similarities, high stakes

MINISTRY OF COMMUNICATIONS AND INFORMATION OF SINGAPORE VIA AP

SINGAPORE One is a septuagenarian American president, the other a millennial North Korean dictator. But each has nuclear weapons and mixes taunts and tributes to keep the other off balance. Thin-skinned alphas, both men are wedded to a go-it-alone leadership style, have a penchant for bombast and are determined to project dominance when they finally meet. As President Trump prepares for his summit in Singapore on Tuesday with Kim Jong Un, he sees some of himself in the authoritarian North Korean: an unorthodox and sometimes feared figure who distrusts the established world order and has a thirst to make history. Publicly, Trump has labeled Kim “Little Rocket Man” and in private with aides has called him “a crazy guy.” Kim, in turn, has called Trump a “mentally deranged U.S. dotard,” a word suggesting senility. Yet advisers say Trump considers Kim a rational actor, and the president has flattered the dictator recently with gratuitous praise. Trump is confident he can negotiate the terms of a deal such that each man can walk away, despite his maximalist demands, with what he wants: for Trump, a promise of peace and denuclearization; for Kim, global legitimacy and prosperity. “This a leader who really is an unknown personality,” Trump said of Kim on Saturday. “… I think that he’s going to surprise on the upside. … We’ll see.” The U.S. president is banking on his forceful personality and what he sees as a singular ability

Preparing for summit, Trump sees some of himself in N. Korea’s unorthodox leader

President Trump, top, arrives Sunday in Singapore for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, below, who arrived a few hours earlier.

N. Koreans in the dark With few information sources other than the state-run media and word of mouth, most North Koreans are still largely in the dark about the summit. The official media has reported that the two leaders plan to meet, but has offered few specifics, including where and when. There was no official word that Kim Jong Un had left the country Sunday and arrived in Singapore. If it follows the usual routine, state media will likely wait until the event is over before it puts out its first reports. (AP)

to size up and manipulate competitors. For him, the technical details of arms negotiations are trivial relative to the chemistry he could forge with his North Korean counterpart and the possibility of breaking down a thick geopolitical barrier. “It’s about attitude,” Trump said Thursday. “It’s about willingness to get things done.” In Trump’s mind, tone and posture are so important that he predicted he would be able to determine Kim’s level of seriousness

about abandoning North Korea’s nuclear weapons “within the first minute” of their meeting. Victor D. Cha — a former George W. Bush administration official who negotiated with North Korea — said the summit probably would shape domestic perceptions of both Trump and Kim. Kim, he said, “constantly feels like he has to prove himself, and in that sense he’s going to do what no other North Korean leader has done, and that is command an audience with the president of the United States. And for Trump, this is the only diplomacy that he’s doing in the whole world right now. Everywhere else he’s either walking out of agreements or sanctioning countries. … This is Trump’s only chance to make a mark as a statesman.” Analysts said that a real danger for Trump is that he underestimates the North Korean delegation’s abilities to outsmart the Americans. “The Kim team is filled with veteran negotiators with abundant experience with the United States, and they are clearly doing their opposition research,” said Daniel Russel, a former diplomat who negotiated with North Koreans in the Obama administration. “Whereas the Trump team is noticeably thin on regional expertise.” Of all the foreign leaders Trump has encountered in his year and a half in office, Kim has been the most difficult for him to read, according to the president’s advisers. “He’s unpredictable in ways I think President Trump prides himself on being,” said a former senior administration official, who requested anonymity to candidly discuss Trump’s approach to North Korea. “He’s unorthodox. In Kim, even Trump realizes he may have met his match.”

SINGAPORE President Trump arrived in Singapore on Sunday night ahead of a historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the first meeting between the leaders of two countries that have been sworn enemies for almost seven decades. Air Force One touched down with little fanfare at Paya Lebar Air Base in Singapore, landing a few hours after Kim arrived in the island state. Asked upon his arrival how he was feeling about the summit, Trump told reporters, “Very good.” Trump and Kim are scheduled to meet face-to-face Tuesday morning at 9 (which is 9 p.m. Monday, EDT), and they will see if they can forge some kind of agreement on North Korea’s nuclear program. Kim and Trump are to meet at the Capella hotel on the resort island of Sentosa, usually better known for hosting Singapore’s Universal Studios amusement park. Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, welcomed Kim and his entourage to the Istana, his palatial office, for talks laying the groundwork for Tuesday’s summit. Trump is due to meet with Lee today. “From our point of view, it’s important that the meeting take place and that the meeting sets developments on a new trajectory — one that will be conducive to the security and stability of the region,” Lee told reporters. Ovechkin asked for water, causing Nicklas Backstrom to laugh and say, “Russian machine never breaks,” a sarcastic reference to Ovechkin’s famous quote. Carlson smirked and said, “Oh, he’s breaking.” The Nationals had been some of the Capitals’ biggest cheerleaders during the championship run, donning “ALLCAPS” shirts and hats, and the two teams posed with the trophy before the game, “We want them to have that same positive vibe,” Trotz said. “… Just let them know there’s no curse or anything — it’s all gone, we checked all the boxes — and I wanted to give them a real positive vibe, not only to the Nats but all the sports teams in this area.” The party raged on. The Cup showed up at Nick’s Riverside Grill in Georgetown, where Carlson and T.J. Oshie dipped Ovechkin down to drink out of it like a keg stand. Ovechkin led a contingent of players swimming in the fountain by the waterfront. At around 6:45 p.m.,Andre Burakovsky and Jakub Vrana rode a party bus to Adams Morgan, where they got Stanley Cup tattoos. At 7:40 p.m., Ovechkin put the Cup in a cab bound for Cafe Milano in Georgetown, where he hoisted it to cheers

STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS The Capitals arrived at Nationals Park on Saturday not long after the black trunk with their beloved Stanley Cup. Both parties were worn down after 36 hours of celebrating their new union. The chalice shined, but the players looked slightly worse for wear, with several in sunglasses. Had they slept since winning the team’s first championship in Las Vegas on Thursday night? “Not much,” defenseman John Carlson said. “A couple naps.” It has taken Washington 44 years to win the Stanley Cup, and the Capitals spent all weekend partying with the iconic trophy and showing it off to the city. Before the Nationals’ 7-5 win over the Giants on Saturday afternoon, Alex Ovechkin proudly carried it out of the clubhouse to cheers before lifting it over his head and kissing the silver. He threw out the first pitch, and in a story fitting for the Caps, his first toss missed, so he tried again. “What I did like is he wanted another throw,” coach Barry Trotz said. “And that was sort of maybe a little bit symbolic. … Instead of, ‘That’s enough,’ he said, ‘No, give me another shot at it.’ And he took another shot and did much better.” At a news conference later,

Infielder Daniel Murphy could make his season debut for the Nationals as early as Tuesday or Wednesday. Manager Dave Martinez did not commit to a return date for Murphy, but he said before a 2-0 loss to the Giants on Sunday that the slugger is traveling with the club to New York for a two-game series against the Yankees. Murphy, who is recovering from October microfracture surgery on his knee, was at Nationals Park on Sunday after playing for Class AA Harrisburg on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, he fielded ground balls and took batting practice. The Nats play three games at Toronto after two at New York, giving them a chance to use Murphy as a designated hitter and keep him from too much running. (TWP)

Top-ranked Spaniard defeats No. 7 Thiem for his 17th major crown TENNIS As Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem warmed up before the French Open final in Paris on Sunday, an announcer called out each player’s bona fides. Nadal’s introduction included a year-by-year accounting of every time he’d already won the title at Roland Garros. Go ahead and add 2018 to the lengthy list. Nadal won his record-extending 11th championship at the French Open, overcoming a problem with his racket-swinging hand and capturing a 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 7 seed Thiem, the only person to beat the Spaniard on clay over the past two seasons — Thiem did it in Rome in 2017. Up a break at 2-1 in the third set, Nadal stopped serving after a fault because he couldn’t straighten his left middle finger. Nadal was given a salt pill by a doctor and had his left forearm massaged by a trainer. Nadal’s form never wavered, though, and soon enough he was celebrating his 17th Grand Slam title overall, second among men only to Roger Federer’s 20. The two stars have combined to win the past six majors. The victory also allowed Nadal, 32, to hold onto the No. 1 ranking, just ahead of Federer. Nadal called it “not even a dream” to gather 11 titles in Paris, saying it was “impossible

to think of something like this.” Thiem, a 24-year-old Austrian, was appearing in his first major final. Nadal is now 11-0 in finals at Roland Garros, and 86-2 overall. The losses came to Robin Soderling in the fourth round in 2009 and Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals in 2015. “What you did and what you are doing,” Thiem told Nadal, “is one of the most outstanding things that any athlete is doing in any sport.”

Simona Halep had long pined for a major title to go along with her No. 1 ranking, and she finally came through Saturday in Paris with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over American Sloane Stephens. “Always I said that if you are No. 1 without a Grand Slam, you are not a real No. 1,” Halep said. “Now that I was able to win, it makes it special. … It’s real now.” Halep, a 26-year-old from Romania, entered Saturday with an 0-3 record in Grand Slam finals, with second-place finishes in Paris in 2014 and 2017 and at the Australian Open this January. With her main goal accomplished, Halep was asked, what becomes the new goal? “I didn’t think about it,” she began, with a chuckle. “I will enjoy this moment and I will see.” And then, without even pausing, Halep added: “But I will not stop this. I will go forward and I will get extra motivation with something else, for sure.” HOWARD FENDRICH (AP)

LeBron: Family will factor into my next move NBA In the immediate aftermath of Cleveland’s 108-85 loss to the visiting Warriors in Game 4 of the NBA Finals on Friday night, LeBron James addressed the elephant in the room. Golden State was celebrating its second straight NBA title, and third in four years, while the Cavs star addressed the question: Was that his final game in Cleveland? “I mean, I have no idea at this point,” James said. “The one thing I’ve always done is considered, obviously, my family … especially where my boys are at this point in their [lives]. They were a lot younger the last time I made a decision like this four years ago. I’ve got a teenage boy, a preteen and a little girl that wasn’t around as well. So [I’ll be] sitting down and considering everything.” The 33-year-old’s words last week would lead one to believe he is prepared to leave the Cavs. He’s spoken at great length about the pursuit of talent, about the importance of basketball IQ, about how Cleveland’s roster wasn’t as good as Golden State’s. If James’ children want to stay in Cleveland, that could affect his decision. If not, Los Angeles — where the Lakers are armed with salary cap room and James already owns a summer home — seems like a strong contender. So too, are the 76ers, if James wants to stay in the East, and the Rockets, who will undoubtedly get creative in trying to convince James to join them. TIM BONTEMPS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The art of standing out

Yale drops essay score requirement

Landing your next gig with the help of a recruiter starts with getting noticed

THINKSTOCK/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

JOB SEARCH Working with recruiters — the hired guns who help companies fill open jobs — isn’t just for aspiring execs at Fortune 500 companies. Chances are you’ll be approached by one someday (or want to put yourself on their radar), and navigating the tricky world of recruiting can pay off. Follow these steps to get the most out of working with recruiters.

Get on their radar. It’s time to dust off that LinkedIn profile. That’s how many recruiters will find and contact you. “You want to show in your [LinkedIn] summary that you are current with what the top professionals in your field are attending to … and that you’re making an impact for your employer,” says Patricia Reich, a former recruiter and current assistant dean and executive director of career services at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Make yourself easy to get in touch with by adding an email address on your profile page, she adds. In addition to posting your resume on LinkedIn and job boards like Monster and Indeed, join networking groups for your industry (such as the Greater Washington Society of CPAs for accountants), suggests Josh Howarth, the D.C. district president for staffing agency Robert Half. If you’re currently unemployed, know that you’ll have to do extra legwork to convince recruiters to take a chance on you. “There’s always going to be that question: If this person is so good, why don’t they have a job?” Howarth warns.

Find the right fit. If a recruiter does reach out, figure out if they’re someone you want to work with. They don’t have to be the only one asking the questions

during the initial interview: Find out how long they’ve been a recruiter, how big their firm is (larger teams may have more clients and more job opportunities) and how many people with your skill set the firm has placed in jobs in the last two months, suggests Howarth. “If the answer is zero, chances are they don’t have a great network for someone with your type of background,” he says. Some recruiting firms specialize in certain fields, like law. Howarth advises being wary of any firm that charges candidates a fee to try to place them. Also think about how hands-on you want the recruiter to be, says Kareemah Woodard, director of executive consulting at Randstad Professionals in D.C. Some recruiters will help shape your career objectives, tailor your resume and identify job opportunities you haven’t considered. “Working with a third party that does this all day, every day

can give some different insights that maybe you weren’t aware of,” Woodard said on a May 17 webinar for alumni at the Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Prepare for the call. That first conversation with a recruiter — either for a particular opening or to add you to their “inventory” for the future — is crucial. Expect them to ask about the obvious: your skills and career goals, current job duties, notable projects or accomplishments, challenges you’ve overcome in past jobs, and why (and when) you’re looking to make a job change. “You need to equip them to essentially market you,” Reich says. Keep in mind that the recruiting firm you’re working with might not have an exclusive deal with the company to fill that role, and your recruiter might be competing with others, she adds. Yale University announced this month that applicants will no longer be required to submit an essay score from the SAT or the ACT. The policy will take effect for rising high school seniors who seek to enter the university’s Class of 2023. Yale’s action comes weeks after Harvard University and Dartmouth College dropped the requirement. In recent years many states, counties and cities have funded SAT and ACT testing in public schools, making the exams free for students. Sometimes, those testing programs include the optional essay sections, but sometimes they don’t, meaning some students must pay to take the test again to apply to schools that require the essay. Many admission professionals say that while they value writing skills, the essay scores obtained from the two tests are not useful. NICK ANDERSON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

D.C. resident Ericka Hatfield, 36, who works in brand development for a public relations firm, has been approached by recruiters multiple times, and a big frustration is the lack of follow-up. “They always fall off the grid,” she says. says.

Pay it forward. Recruiters might also contact you when they’re looking for referrals for other open positions, Reich says, and it’s often worth helping them out. “The logic on their part is great candidates know other great candidates,” she says. Whether or not you get a job out of your interaction with a recruiter, consider them part of your network now. Although Hatfield never scored a job from a recruiter, she always adds them as a contact on LinkedIn afterward. “Relationships with search consultants are not merely transactional,” Reich says. “They can be strategic and long-term.” ERIN BYLANDER (FOR EXPRESS)

His job is a walk in the park s t ea l th i s jo b

What he does When you startle a black bear, prompting it to charge toward you and stop maybe 10 or 15 feet away, it’s called a bluff charge. “That’s pretty scary the first time it happens,” says Rolf Gubler, a biologist and forest pest manager at Shenandoah National Park. “People always remember their first bluff charge.” Part of Gubler’s work in the division of Natural and Cultural Resources is managing relations between the park’s visitors and the 50-plus species of mammals that inhabit Shenandoah, including about 400 to 600 black bears. His team of “bear techs” educates visitors on food storage compliance and trash management, and they handle illegal wildlife feeding, bear jams (when traffic backs up due to a sighting) and, as a last resort, animal capture, trapping and relocation. “We say, ‘Hey, folks, you really need to properly store your food — you can’t go hike and leave it at the picnic table for two hours and expect it to still be there,’” Gubler says. “All it takes is for a bear to get a food reward, and then it can become food conditioned and become an animal that causes property damage … and needs to be relocated to a new area.” One of Gubler’s focuses this spring was reintroducing peregrine falcons to the park. The birds — known for their fast flying and blue-gray wings — declined sharply in the eastern

U.S. in the mid-20th century as a result of the pesticide DDT, and they’re still considered a threatened species in Virginia. Shenandoah works with groups like the College of William and Mary’s Center for Conservation Biology and the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to take at-risk falcon chicks from eastern Virginia, get them ready for flight through a process called hacking and then release them from the park’s Franklin Cliffs. “The falcons are protected in a hack box, like a big doghouse, and after two weeks or so they learn how to fly and hunt on their own,” Gubler says. “Visitors can come up and watch [the release], and it’s a pretty unique experience.” Aside from the wildlife, there are nearly 200,000 acres of park that need to be managed, too. Gubler is particularly concerned with suppressing the emerald ash borer — a green jewel beetle — and hemlock woolly adelgid, a sap-sucking insect that ravages hemlocks. “Tens of millions of trees have died because of the emerald ash borer,” Gubler says. “We try to find money to support our work against it. Some of it’s suppression work; some of it’s pesticide treatments; but eventually, some of it’s gonna have to be money for tree removal work.”

How he got the job Gubler headed to Pennsylvania State University as a wildlife science major, but found that he equally enjoyed his required forestry courses, so he added forest science as a double major — which meant staying five years

instead of four. After graduating in May 1988, he joined the Shenandoah staff as a seasonal biological technician. Six months later, a position opened in the air quality monitoring program, and Gubler decided to give it a try. “It was a little outside my interest area, but it’s very competitive to get into the park service,” he says. “I ended up working two or three different roles and got into the natural resources area and became a biologist.” He marked 30 years at the park in May.

Who would want the job: If you’re going to spend your days in a national park, it goes

without saying you need to like the outdoors. “You have to have a passion for the protection of wildlife and natural resources,” Gubler says. An interest in working with rare plants or suppressing exotic insects is helpful, too. “We’re really out there to preserve what’s here, to preserve the native species.”

How you can get the job Find a college with a good program in wildlife science or forest ecology, and get a bachelor’s followed by a master’s degree, Gubler suggests. From there, your exact route depends on what you want to be doing in a

national park. At Shenandoah, there are five divisions of park rangers: Ranger Activities (like search and rescue); Interpretation and Education; Maintenance; Administration; and Gubler’s division, Natural and Cultural Resources. As Gubler points out, few other offices can boast such striking, varied co-workers. “I fell in love with [Shenandoah],” he says. “Growing up in eastern PA, you didn’t see things like black bear and bobcat and wild turkeys. Here, you’re down in the valley canoeing in the river and it’s routine to see osprey and bald eagles.” ANGELA HAUPT (FOR EXPRESS)

Bourdain put everything on the table 1956-2018 All of Anthony Bourdain’s legacy comes down to this, the example that he lived through his television shows: People should strive to understand one another’s stories and cultures. And the best way to do that was over a meal. “If you sit down with people and just say, ‘Hey, what makes you happy? What’s your life like? What do you like to eat?’ More often than not, they will tell you extraordinary things, many of which have nothing to do with food,” he told NPR in October. Bourdain will be remembered for his outsized influence on the American palate. He inspired a curiosity about global flavors, and the lives of the people who cook them. He was critical of food culture and celebrity, even after he became one, exercising a wit and a tongue as sharp as his knives.

Bourdain was found dead Friday of an apparent suicide at age 61 near Strasbourg, France, where he was filming for his CNN show “Parts Unknown,” and chefs worldwide are mourning the loss of a friend and role model. “I have such a hard time reconciling the beautiful and brutal honesty that I knew with him as a friend, with the private pain and agony that he was enduring,” said Andrew Zimmern, the host of “Bizarre Foods.” Bourdain’s 2000 best-seller, “Kitchen Confidential,” laid out his demons: drug and alcohol abuse, which he was reportedly able to get under control. But he later renounced the “bad boy” label, because he felt responsible for the culture of masculinity and sexual harassment that it bred. His curiosity about the world and its flavors drove his shows. He first hosted “A Cook’s Tour” for the Food Network in 2002, before taking “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” to the Travel Channel in 2005, where it ran for nine seasons before he moved his

Anthony Bourdain hosted “No Reservations” on the Travel Channel for nine seasons before starting the show “Parts Unknown” on CNN in 2013.

An ally of immigrants Anthony Bourdain was a defender of immigrant rights, writing in his 2000 book “Kitchen Confidential” that “no one understands and appreciates the American Dream … better than a non-American.” Asked in January 2017 about President Trump’s travel ban, Bourdain said: “We have arrived at the most shameful period of American politics in my lifetime.” M.J.

show to CNN in 2013 as “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown.” Bourdain helped revolutionize the travel food TV show, taking the format beyond tourism tips and escapism. Bourdain’s shows

shaped how people traveled and showed that tracking down authentic food was an essential part of visiting a new place. The series also provided many viewers a chance to feel closer to countries they’d never thought of visiting. And he went to places that made headlines for unrest or hostility. “People everywhere are proud of their food and their culture,” Bourdain wrote in a 2014 Washington Post op-ed. “And even where they have little reason to be kind to an American (Vietnam, Cuba, Gaza, the West Bank), I’ve been welcomed with enormous generosity again and again: the kindnesses of strangers.”

Stuffed with subplots: Promising ‘Dietland’ needs to slim its story “Dietland” (9 p.m. Mondays on AMC) is the story of Plum Kettle — not your typical TV lead character. In voiceover narration, she reveals that Plum is her nickname — bestowed because she is “succulent and round, also known as fat.” Aware that the word “fat” is charged, she adds, “I’m allowed to say it.” The actress Joy Nash, who plays Plum with an air of melancholy, states that she herself is “fat” at 293 pounds and not at all self-conscious about it. But Plum is. When she walks down the street, men hurl fat insults at her. She is saving her money for a surgery so she can drop pounds. She earns a living mainly by ghostwriting an advice column for a women’s magazine called Daisy Chain. The editor is Kitty Montgomery, portrayed with gleeful hauteur by Julianna Margulies of “The Good Wife.” Kitty is the opposite of Plum, so thin that a reader writes, “You’re

so pretty, even though you look like a skinny waxed Dracula.” Kitty appreciates Plum’s insightful writing but does not want to assign her enterprising articles. She just wants her readers to adhere to impossible standards of beauty. And she’s caught up in some kind of fishy business that involves a “teensy” security breach. Now, that’s a good amount of plot for one show. But “Dietland” doesn’t stop there. A vigilante group called Jennifer is killing men who have been hostile to women. And Plum is recruited to join a revolutionary group that believes diets are “the root of all evil.” The result is a series that struggles to find an identity but is still worth watching, both for Nash’s bravura performance and for the witty and timely dialogue — like when Plum’s obnoxiously giddy “Waist Watchers” counselor tells her, “It will be hard to say goodbye to fat behaviors — like eating.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You are eager to transform something from what it was to what it promises to be; only you can work the magic needed to fulfill its potential. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) If you’re ready, say so; if you’re not, say so. No matter what happens, you must be accountable to yourself. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Friends are trying to protect you from something they feel may be hurtful, but you want to experience everything coming your way today. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You feel a sense of power as a result of immersing yourself in a new situation. You can gain control over something previously uncontrollable.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Your behavior may stray outside the realm of the acceptable for a time today, but no one need know; there is little risk of being found out.

TODAY: More periods of rain are likely, with a few pockets of heavier showers possible. With all this rain, we’ll be watching the larger rivers for flooding again. A steady wind from the east socks us in with clouds as highs struggle to the upper 60s to near 70. By evening, the bulk of the shower activity should be moving off.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may surprise others with an announcement that seems to be premature — but you are certainly ready to go public right now. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may choose to front-load your day, doing more early on. This allows you to monitor energy levels more carefully.
