For fans, a no-guilt ‘sick’ day THE DISTRICT As many in the region came down with the red flu on Tuesday, bosses, it seemed, didn’t hear many elaborate excuses for why their employees couldn’t come to work. Like many who waited on the National Mall for the start of the parade celebrating the Capitals’ Stanley Cup victory, Dan Wyman, a teaching assistant in Montgomery County, said his principal knew how big a Capitals fan he is. “He said, ‘You’re not going to be here on Tuesday, are you?’ ” Wyman said. “I just said, “Nope.’ ” There wasn’t a lot of guilt being felt as thousands lined Constitution Avenue in the middle of a workday — not even for someone whose job it is to take away others’ excruciating pain. Dave Montgomery, a dentist and lifelong Capitals fan from West Chester, Pa., for instance, felt not a pang of guilt as he happily stood on the Mall. “It’s their own fault for eating

WMATA, though, claimed to be an exception to the epidemic. The transit agency said it had carried more than 351,000 passengers as of noon on Tuesday, about 78,000 more than over the same period on Monday. Spokesman Dan Stessel said the agency’s employees see major events like the parade as times when it’s “all hands on deck.” “That’s not how we roll,” he emailed, when asked if many had called in sick. Leaning against a tree on the Mall, Brandon Bellamy, an academic administrator at a local college, said his co-workers know how big a Caps fan he is. So there was no point in coming up with an elaborate story. “I just said, ‘I won’t be coming to work. I won’t be there. I’ll see you on Wednesday,’ ” he said. He wouldn’t be working on a day when the city was celebrating its first major sports championship in 26 years. “We might not get another opportunity for another 30 years,” he said. Deer escapes Metro station unscathed Run, Bambi, run! A deer wandered into the Crystal City Metro station around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, jumped onto the tracks and managed to make it out without hitting the electrified third rail — or a train. No riders were hurt, although those who saw it were surprised. The incident was captured on Metro surveillance video. Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said it appears the deer got into the tunnel between National Airport and Crystal City and likely came from a nearby wooded area. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Jacai Colson was killed by friendly fire in 2016 ambush in Pr. George’s PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY An undercover detective fatally shot by a fellow officer as they responded to a shootout in front of Prince George’s County police headquarters had his badge in his hand and was shouting, “Police! The lawsuit asserts that the officer who killed Prince George’s Det. Jacai Colson in 2016 showed a “reckless disregard for human life” by shooting through a view obstructed by a fence at someone who did not match the suspect description radioed to law enforcement. The lawsuit in Prince George’s County was filed against the officer who shot Colson, Taylor Krauss, and the county. Colson gave his life protecting his community and fellow officers, the Colson family said
in a statement, and the lawsuit seeks “complete accountability for Jacai’s death.” Krauss, who has been with the department about eight years, is being represented by the county attorney and remains on the force. A grand jury declined to indict Krauss of murder and manslaughter four months after the shooting. The lawsuit stems from a March 16, 2016, attack on a police station in Palmer Park, Md. There’s more than one way to rebuff the Pentagon’s plan to limit transgender participation in the military. In both cases, the message favoring transgender people’s military service was powerful. Federal judge approves AT&T, Time Warner deal

CDC: Maybe skip the office birthday cake
BUSINESS A federal judge approved AT&T’s $85 billion purchase of Time Warner on Tuesday, handing the telecom giant a massive victory that could hamper the ambitions of U.S. regulators seeking to block big corporate mergers. The case — one of the most closely watched antitrust trials in decades — is viewed as a bellwether for other deals waiting in the wings. From Comcast’s bid for 21st Century Fox to CVS’ acquisition of Aetna, massive corporations increasingly have sought to expand their reach by buying up companies in different lines of business. The judge’s decision, which is allowing AT&T to merge with Time Warner without conditions, shows the federal government may struggle to rein in such mergers. “I think for business, in general, it’s going to be seen as a green light for mergers. I think you’ll see a lot of people using it as an opportunity to push mergers they may have been thinking about,” said Ed Black, president of the Computers and Communications Industry Association trade group. In handing down his ruling, federal judge Richard Leon said that the Justice Department failed to provide sufficient proof

that the deal would harm competition or consumers. Leon took issue with the government’s analysis that the merger would result in higher prices for consumers. And Leon also warned the U.S. government against seeking a stay on the merger if it brings an appeal for the purpose of trying to stymie the deal. For the moment, the Department of Justice has not indicated its next steps. The decision means telecom giant AT&T will now control highly sought-after programming — including “Game of Thrones,” the Harry Potter movie franchise and CNN — as well as the infrastructure that delivers that content to tens of millions of living rooms,

televisions and smartphones. Beyond its wireless network and internet service, AT&T acquired DirecTV in a $67 billion deal in 2015, which also had the blessing of government regulators. Ahead of the ruling, publicinterest advocates had expressed deep fears that AT&T’s victory would only quicken the rapid consolidation of the media, telecom and tech industries. “The consumer just doesn’t benefit in any way, shape or form. I believe this is going to lead to higher prices,” said Gigi Sohn, a former top aide to the Federal Communications Commission. TONY ROMM AND BRIAN FUNG

The CDC recently found that 22 percent of working Americans obtain food on the job, averaging 1,300 calories a week — mostly unhealthy snacks like cake and pizza, NBC News reported. “Employers may … want to consider healthy meeting policies to encourage healthy food options,” Stephen Onufrak, a CDC epidemiologist who led the study, told NBC News. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Trump held their historic summit Tuesday in Singapore.
confrontation in the short term. There will be many in Seoul and Tokyo who are relieved that Washington and Pyongyang are talking up friendship, not potential war. Yet line up all the bold claims Trump and his lieutenants made ahead of Tuesday’s summit, and it’s clear that the end result, at least where nukes are concerned, doesn’t hit the mark. Also missing from the document was something Trump signaled ahead of the summit that could be a major “get”: language committing to end the Korean War, which was stopped by an armistice, not a peace treaty, leaving the Korean Peninsula still technically in a state of war. The closest Trump and Kim got was a vow to “join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.” All this leaves Trump open to criticism that he has given Kim what he has long wanted — recognition, respect and legitimacy on the world stage as an equal — without getting anything substantive on nukes in return. Trump, Kim sign document with vague promises and an agreement to keep talking Korea military exercises and an admission that he could be willing to withdraw U.S. troops from South Korea in the future. “These are all things that Trump is putting on the table as concessions, all in exchange for some vague promises by the North Koreans,” said Paul Haenle, a former China director at the White House National Security Council in the Obama and George W. Bush administrations. He called the language in the joint statement “weak, vague and worrisome.” In the document, signed with great fanfare by Trump and Kim in Singapore, Kim committed to “complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.” Trump said that process would be starting very soon, adding that once it starts, “it’s pretty much over.” Not so simple. Kim has made the denuclearization pledge before. In his April agreement with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, the language was similar, with the two vowing to achieve “a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula through complete

Trump creates confusion with military pledge POLITICS One of President Trump’s more controversial pledges at his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un — that the U.S. would halt joint military exercises on the Korean Peninsula — touched off confusion on Capitol Hill, with an influential GOP senator asserting the exercises would nonetheless continue. Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., said that was the message delivered by Vice President Pence, above, to Senate Republicans during a private lunch Tuesday — although that was immediately disputed by Pence’s office. “I think what the vice president said today — and we’ll continue to clarify what the president had talked about — exercises will continue with South Korea,” Gardner said during a news conference with other GOP leaders. “I look forward to further comment and clarification from the president when he gets here.” According to a Pence aide, the vice president was asked about force readiness during the Senate GOP lunch and stressed that while the semiannual “war games” would end, the regular readiness training would continue. But there was little immediate clarity on what ending the exercises entails. Col. Jennifer Lovett, a spokeswoman at the U.S. military command in South Korea, said the command “has received no updated guidance on execution or cessation of training exercises.” SEUNG MIN KIM
Pact misses the mark ANALYSIS After all the hype, all the vows to tackle what’s perhaps the world’s most urgent crisis, President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un fell short of the kind of deal the U.S. president himself has long said is needed to settle the North’s decades-long pursuit of nuclear weapons. For months, Trump has been criticizing presidents past, accusing them of an inexcusable failure to solve the nuclear threat emanating from the North. On Tuesday, he patted himself on the back for signing a “comprehensive” pact with Kim paving a path toward denuclearization, but the contours appeared far weaker than even his predecessors’ failed deals. Rather than a detailed statement filled with concrete restraints on the North, the document seemed to amount mostly to a restatement of long-assumed principles and an agreement to keep talking. And Trump made dramatic on-the-spot concessions to Kim that his own advisers had urged him against, including a halt on “provocative” U.S.-South

Trump’s pitch: A new North SINGAPORE Reporters crowded into a Singapore auditorium Tuesday, expecting President Trump to walk out and announce the results of his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Suddenly, two huge screens came to life. Soaring music boomed over the speakers, and the reporters were bombarded with a montage portraying North Korea as some sort of paradise. Golden sunrises, gleaming skylines and high-speed trains. Children skipping through Kim Il Sung square in Pyongyang. North Korean flags fluttering between images of Egyptian pyramids, the Taj Mahal and the Lincoln Memorial. In a split-screen shot, Kim waved to an adoring crowd while Trump stood beside him with his thumb in the air. They appeared over and over again, like running mates in a campaign video. The four-minute video included brief interludes of missiles, soldiers and warships interrupting the pageantry. Some journalists initially assumed they were watching one of Pyongyang’s infamous propaganda films.

He uses a slick video to try to sell Kim on what deal could mean
President Trump walks with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un on Sentosa Island.
The film’s narration included this message for Kim, who Trump hopes will give up nuclear weapons in exchange for more normal relations. “You can have medical breakthroughs, an abundance of resources, innovative technology and new discoveries,” the narrator said, the footage resembling a Hollywood movie trailer as it built to its finale: “Featuring President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un in a meeting to remake history,” the narrator concluded, as Korean words flashed on a black background: “It is going to become a reality?” It was the type of glitzy production that Trump might have once used to persuade investors to finance his hotels, and now hoped could persuade one of the most repressive regimes in the world to disarm and end nearly 70 years of international isolation and militant hostility to the U.S. Trump mused to reporters that a new relationship with North Korea might even lead to its development as a vacation destination. He mentioned “great condos” that might one day be built on the “great beaches” of North Korea. “I explained it,” Trump said. “You could have the best hotels in the world. Think of it from the real estate perspective.”
The White House created a fourminute video to help sway Kim.
REACTIONS
South Korea
Japan
China
Even though specifics of any deal were sparse Tuesday, North Korea’s key neighbors were generally pleased by the results of the meeting between President Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un. (TWP)
President Moon Jae-in heralded the summit as a success that set a path for peace. He was pleased despite the surprise announcement that the U.S. military will suspend some exercises with South Korea that are seen as a threat by the North. “I would like to pay my respect to President Trump, who achieved a feat that no one else has ever delivered,” Moon said in a statement.
The nation was left without what it wanted most from the summit — a clear declaration that North Korea would reopen talks over the abductions of Japanese citizens decades ago. Japanese leaders appeared satisfied, nonetheless, with what they got: Trump’s public promise that he raised the issue with Kim and that the North was “working on that.”
China issued a hedged statement about the possibility of relaxing sanctions on North Korea, but saw its preferred approach to U.S.-North Korean relations spelled out virtually intact in the Trump-Kim statement. Some experts said the U.S. initiative could lead Beijing to accelerate its engagement of North Korea — economically and politically — to assure its influence doesn’t wane.

But the video was not North Korean propaganda. Trump revealed that it was ordered up by the White House for the benefit of Kim. “I hope you liked it,” Trump told reporters. “I thought it was good. I thought it was interesting enough to show. ... And I think he loved it.” Some wondered if Trump had just provided U.S.-sanctioned propaganda to one of the country’s oldest adversaries.

Trump low-key on fretting over human rights SINGAPORE In galvanizing condemnation worldwide of North Korea last year, President Trump often invoked the authoritarian nation’s brutal mistreatment of foreign prisoners and its own people, some of whom, he said in Seoul in November, “would rather be slaves than live in North Korea.” But on Tuesday, after a fivehour summit with leader Kim Jong Un, Trump addressed a news conference of hundreds of international journalists and didn’t mention human rights in his opening remarks. The issue wasn’t included in a joint statement by the two leaders. And although Trump, in response to a question, assured reporters that he raised the matter with Kim, the president did not offer anything specific about what they discussed. Trump took pains to remind his audience that while life is “rough” in North Korea, “it’s rough in a lot of places, by the way, not just there.” He made no mention of trying to win commitments from Kim to release political prisoners or close the labor camps to which an estimated 100,000 North Koreans have been sentenced. The president’s muted tone on human rights energized some of his political opponents. “Kim’s gulags, public executions, planned starvation, are legitimized on the world stage,” tweeted Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn. “ ... What the hell?” DAVID NAKAMURA (TWP)

nation+world Money from companies would have helped pay to fight homelessness SEATTLE Seattle leaders on Tuesday repealed a tax on large companies such as Amazon and Starbucks after a backlash from businesses, a stark reversal from a month ago when the City Council unanimously approved the effort to combat a growing homelessness crisis. The council voted 7-2 after supporters and opponents packed a meeting with signs saying, “Tax Amazon, housing for all” and “No tax on jobs,” with some shouting for more time to discuss the issue.

The vote showed Amazon’s ability to push back aggressively on government taxes, especially in its affluent hometown, where it’s the largest employer and where some have criticized it for helping cultivate a widening income gap that is pricing lowerincome workers out of housing. The tax was proposed as a progressive revenue source aimed at tackling one of the nation’s highest homelessness numbers, a problem that hasn’t eased even as city spending on the issue grew. Businesses and residents demanded more accountability in how Seattle addresses homelessness and housing and said it should take a regional approach to the problem. Many worried that Amazon

and others would leave the city, with construction workers in hard hats packing City Hall to object to the tax.
Amazon, Starbucks and others sharply criticized the tax as misguided, and the online retailer even temporarily halted construction planning on a new high-rise building near its Seattle headquarters in protest. Supporters praised it as a step toward building badly needed affordable housing. They argued that too many people are suffering on the streets and that the problem is deepening, despite city-funded programs finding homes for 3,400 people last year. Seattle spent $68 million on homelessness last year and plans to spend even more this year, not counting the tax that would have raised roughly $48 million annually. PHUONG LE (AP)

ORLANDO, FLA. | People gaze at the memorial set up outside Orlando’s Pulse gay nightclub, where 49 people were killed and 53 wounded in a 2016 shooting. Tuesday marked two years since the tragedy. The day was recognized by survivors and victims’ family members with a “rainbow run” and exhibit at the local history center. Survivors and relatives of those who died have filed lawsuits against Pulse’s owners and Orlando police.
Tesla to lay off 9 percent of workforce — about 4K jobs — as part of “restructuring”
WASHINGTON Sexual harassment is rampant in academic science, and colleges and universities that train new scientists need a systemwide culture change so women won’t be bullied out of the field, a national advisory group said Tuesday. In fact, it’s time to treat sexual harassment as seriously as research misconduct, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine concluded in recommendations aimed at U.S. institutions of higher education and the groups that fund them. While women are still outnumbered by men, universities are recruiting more women to science-related fields than ever before. The new report makes clear that pervasive sexual harassment puts those gains at risk. Most common in science is what the National Academies termed gender harassment, a hostile environment rife with sexist commentary and crude behavior that can harm a woman’s education and career, as well as her mental and physical health. “Even when the sexual harassment entails nothing but sexist insult without any unwanted sexual pursuit, it takes a toll,” said University of Michigan psychology professor Lilia Cortina, a member of the committee that spent two years on the study. “It’s about pushing women out.” LAURAN NEERGAARD (AP)

Washington salutes the Cup THE DISTRICT Still glowing five days after winning the Stanley Cup, the Capitals and their fans celebrated the franchise’s first NHL championship with a parade down Constitution Avenue on Tuesday, leading to a raucous, beer-soaked rally on the Mall. The festivities attracted tens of thousands of fans who poured into the city to celebrate the District’s first major professional sports title in 26 years. And the rally ended as so many Capitals parties have ended over the past few days: with a chorus of “We Are The Champions” and some profanity-filled screams. The rally capped hours of celebrating by fans, some of whom had congregated by the

parade’s stage before 4 a.m. Metro trains and downtown streets were clogged with fans clad in red jerseys and T-shirts, who brought posters and banners, costumes and replica Stanley Cups made out of beer cans or kitchen implements. move past the Lincoln Memorial just after 11 a.m., before heading east on Constitution. The buses were loaded with season-ticket holders, team staffers, elected officials and, of course, the players and coaches, while the convertibles carried the team’s broadcasters and other notable figures. Some of the vehicles were draped in banners reading
“Ovechkin for President.” The final vehicle included Ovechkin, veteran defenseman Brooks Orpik, owner Ted Leonsis and the Stanley Cup. Though the official route began six blocks away, hundreds of fans were at the intersection of 23rd and Constitution to watch the start, while a firetruck leading the procession honked that familiar “Let’s Go Caps!” refrain. The parade followed Constitution to Seventh Street NW, then made a right turn in advance of a rally at the Mall. The onstage rally began shortly after 1 p.m. Players took the stage to the music of Chuck Brown’s “Bustin’ Loose.” As they were introduced individually, many of them did what they’ve done almost continually since winning the Cup on Thursday: They guzzled beer, this time to the cheers of a massive crowd. A CITYWIDE TOAST
Shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday, a euphoric crush of Washington Capitals fans awaited the arrival of their Stanley Cup champions at the parade along Constitution Avenue. Forward Tom Wilson was the first to greet them. Standing atop a double-decker bus, he pointed an index finger to the sky with his left hand and held a blue bottle of Bud Light in his right. The scene was fairly subdued, but a select few were determined to celebrate to the fullest. Alex Castillo, a 33-year-old who was born in Providence Hospital in Northeast D.C. and bonded over Caps games with his father, sipped from a can of Miller Lite he bought from a street vender for $1. “I never thought I’d be able to do this,” he said, gesturing at the procession. Davin Mackesy, a 54-year-old engineer, watched alongside his wife Joni and their 12-year-old son Evan. Every night since Thursday, the last thing he said to Joni before cutting off the lights has been, “Caps won the Cup!” About 90 minutes later, Andrea Medici, a 52-year-old lawyer for the Environmental Protection Agency, waved a Caps flag outside her workplace, beaming from ear-to-ear as the crowd trickled out. Former linebacker David Windham was one of 26 replacement players to receive a ring.
MLB
RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU
Recognized at last: Redskins’ fill-ins receive 1987 rings Some days, maybe their friends thought their stories about playing for the Redskins and beating Dallas on “Monday Night Football” were just the ramblings of old men. If they were really part of the 1987 season, where were their Super Bowl rings? Finally, Tuesday at Redskins Park, the franchise presented diamond-encrusted gold bands with “World Champions 1987” engraved on them to 26 men who crossed the picket line and went 3-0 when the regulars went on strike that year. “We’ve been called ‘scabs’ our whole life,” former safety
Skip Lane said. “The Redskins didn’t want to have anything to do with us, to attach their great Super Bowl with us, but after time they realized how much of a part we were.” They’re no longer scabs or even strike players. “Replacements” is the accepted term. Even Redskins greats Doug Williams, Gary Clark and Dexter Manley — who all starred in the Super Bowl XXII victory over the Broncos — stopped by Tuesday to show the regulars no longer held a grudge. The group produced several coaches, including Ted Karras, who won a ring by leading Marian (Ind.) University to the 2012 NAIA championship. But this ring meant Karras’ family is
now a three-generation Super Bowl winner. Father Ted Karras Sr. earned his in Chicago under coach George Halas in 1963, and Ted Karras III won a ring with New England under coach Bill Belichick in 2016. “To come back 31 years later, it’s really nice to have it,” Karras said. Willard Scissum won an NCAA title at Alabama under coach Bear Bryant, and went on to coach several college teams and in NFL Europe. But Scissum will be best remembered as the lineman working at a 7-Eleven in Oxon Hill, Md., when he signed with the Redskins. Clearing the convenience store parking lot
“In your heart you knew you were a part of it, but never accepted into the organization.” SKIP LANE, on helping the Redskins in three wins in 1987, but not getting a Super Bowl XXII ring until Tuesday

of drug dealers prepared him for angry Redskins players greeting the replacements at Redskins Park. “I saw the guys beating on the bus, but as long as they didn’t touch me, I didn’t touch them,” Scissum recalled. Tony Robinson was perhaps the best-known replacement — a renowned quarterback at Tennessee who went undrafted in 1986 because of a knee injury and a conviction for selling cocaine. He was serving time in a Richmond halfway house when he signed, and he returned there after the strike’s end. Robinson — who threw for 152 yards in a 13-7 win over a Cowboys team that featured Danny White and Tony Dorsett — said he’s never seen the movie treatment of his story portrayed in “The Replacements.” When he thinks about his Monday night triumph, he remembers telling his Dallasloving family members: “How ’bout those Cowboys now?” Rick Snider has covered sports in Washington since 1978. Infielder Daniel Murphy was activated by the Nationals on Tuesday and was slated to bat fifth as a designated hitter in a game at the Yankees, which ended after Express’ deadline. Murphy, 33, had missed 63 games while recovering from October surgery on his right knee. He hit .243 with two homers, seven RBIs and six walks in a 10-game rehab assignment with Class AA Harrisburg. The three-time AllStar committed six errors in eight starts at second base and made two more starts at first. The Nats face the Yankees again tonight (7:05, MASN, ESPN). (AP)

Mets GM: Time is now to turn season around Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday that his players are running out of time to turn around their season, and he takes the responsibility as the architect of the roster. After an 11-1 start, the Mets began Tuesday at 28-34 and fourth in the NL East, 7½ games behind first-place Washington. The injury-ravaged Mets were 28th in runs and 26th among the 30 teams in batting average at .230. The offense has been unable to support a pitching staff that is 15th in ERA at 4.03. “The job now is to figure out how to fix it and improve it,” Alderson said.(AP)

CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK
Inside the rise and fall of Lil Wayne MUSIC Lil Wayne was on a run in 2007 and 2008 unlike anything rap had seen before. Think Michael Jordan in the 1990s. Tiger Woods in the 2000s. Barry Bonds in 1994. We now live in a world where Kendrick Lamar owns a Pulitzer Prize and Kanye West has squandered his goodwill with a Twitter rant and an album that arrived with a whimper. But the rap world a decade ago was an entirely different place, a world singularly ruled by one artist: Lil Wayne. And it was all leading to one album: “Tha Carter III,” which was released 10 years ago this past Sunday and crowned Wayne as the best in the game — a title he quickly lost. The album lived up to expectations as one of the strangest rap records ever recorded — a title it arguably still holds. Wayne called himself a Martian. Not in a metaphorical way, just in a

weird way. In another song, he played a doctor attempting to save hip-hop. The album eventually sold nearly 4 million copies and went platinum three times over. Within rap, he was crowned king. Outside of rap, Wayne became so sought after that he became an on-camera guest analyst and blogger for ESPN. Suddenly, the rapper was everywhere. Then Wayne went from Jordan winning six rings with the Bulls to Jordan batting .202 with the Birmingham Barons. Several factors contributed to his fall from grace. Primarily, that weirdness, the quality once so lauded for making Wayne a singular force, proved to be his downfall when the rapper decided he wanted to make a rock album — despite his subpar talent (to put it nicely) when it came to guitar playing. The album, called “Rebirth,” arrived in 2010 — and it was a critical disaster. While it was eventually certified gold, the sales paled in comparison to “Tha Carter III.” And just after the record’s release, he spent

Lil Wayne can release his new album, “Tha Carter V,” after two long-running lawsuits were settled last week, freeing the record from legal limbo.
An artist of innovation Lil Wayne dropped hundreds of verses via mixtapes in 2007, but he only officially released five songs. Artists since him, like Chance the Rapper, have struck gold off mixtapes, but it was a rare strategy at the time. And it worked: You couldn’t escape Wayne’s music, the way you can’t dry off under a waterfall. T.M.A.
eight months incarcerated at Rikers Island on gun charges. Wayne has since released a string of poor to mediocre albums (by critical consensus). His health seems questionable, as he’s suffered a number of
seizures in the past few years. He’s alienated fans by saying racism doesn’t exist and angrily dismissing Black Lives Matter. Finally, he grew embroiled in two long-running lawsuits against a hodgepodge of his former supporters, including Birdman, Cash Money Records and Universal Records. Those lawsuits were settled last week, and he is now free to release an album that’s been waiting in legal limbo, “Tha Carter V.” The record will likely sell, regardless of how good it is. And as Wayne once explained in one of his hazy, surreal raps in 2007: “It’s a bakery here, just trying to get dough.” TRAVIS M. ANDREWS (THE WASHINGTON POST)
BOX OFFICE HAUL
The global box office threshold surpassed by “Avengers: Infinity War,” Disney announced Tuesday, making the supersized superhero hit the fourth film to reach that mark. The only other movies in the $2 billion club are “Avatar,” “Titanic” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” (AP)

She may have smashed a few herself, but judging by her first solo album, Shannon Shaw has had her heart broken in 17 places. “Shannon in Nashville,” which came out Friday, stays anchored in the foundational era of her band, Shannon and the Clams. But there are additional instrumental layers, resulting in smoother, deeper foundations for Shaw’s coarsely expressive vocals. The ballads and leisurely strolls through heartbreak and its many articulations — from slightly comical (“Lord of Alaska”) to outright tear-jerking (“Love I Can’t Explain) — are vehicles for Shaw’s narratives. Strings elevate the drama on “Freddies ‘n’ Teddies,” while “Broke My Own” is Shaw at her most Amy Winehouseish. Heartbreak, you’ve done your part on “Shannon in Nashville.” Now please stay away from her. PABLO GORONDI (AP)

Filmmaker Ari Aster grounded the horror thriller in melodrama FILM At first glance, “Hereditary” hardly looks sinister. It begins quietly at a grandmother’s funeral. Annie (Toni Collette) asks her husband, Steve (Gabriel Byrne), whether she’s supposed to feel sadder over the death of her mother. He says that will happen
in due time. But the events in “Hereditary” will bring no comfort for Annie, her husband or their two children, Peter (Alex Wolff) and Charlie (Milly Shapiro). The film, which hit theaters Friday, grossed $13.6 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend to set a record for independent film studio A24. While the movie’s trailers and poster paint it as a thrillfest, “Hereditary” is actually a family drama in disguise. First-time

Tense ‘Hereditary’ is all in the family Toni Collette begins her unlikely career pivot to becoming a set designer.
director Ari Aster marries the horror and melodrama genres into an unnerving movie about grief. “I pitched the film as a family tragedy that curdles into a
nightmare, in the way that life can feel like a nightmare when disaster strikes,” Aster said. “In that way, the film owes a greater debt to domestic melodramas than it does to the horror movie.”
Deadline: Ben Affleck, “The Accountant” director Gavin O’Connor developing sports drama “The Has-Been”
Collette said the script caught her eye because it was so radically different from the roles that come her way. As in other recent family horror movies, like this year’s “A Quiet Place,” the adults in “Hereditary” fear losing a child but feel powerless against forces that no one else can see. “I really admired that the horror elements were an extension of something really true,” Collette said. “None of it is gratuitous because you are able to get to know the characters at the beginning and you emotionally invest in them as they go through what’s pretty much the most painful period anyone could go through in life.” MONICA CASTILLO (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
