Yes, there are D.C. socialists THE DISTRICT On a recent spring afternoon in Washington, the revolution was not coming. Capitalism was in full swing, as evidenced by shoppers running about their business in Cleveland Park. At Yes Organic Market and California Tortilla, staff members were hard at work. A grounds crew nearby was busy in a front yard, tidying things to please a landowner. But upstairs in the Cleveland Park library, the Jacobin reading group — about 40 members, men and women, mostly young — was talking socialism. The rhetoric was old, but some of it was coming from people born after the Reagan administration. “The unions merely negotiate the exploitation of the working class,” said one. “You can’t solve a problem by changing your job instead of the job you have,” argued another. And the inescapable question: “What’s it going to take for the labor movement to come back?” This reading group and others

your political beliefs?’ ” Wohl’s crew — folks with a fight, but no strong party affiliation — have a mouthpiece in Jacobin, a publication for a movement that has elected no members of Congress and has never put a candidate in the White House. While the reading groups, at which participants often discuss selections from the magazine, don’t offer armed uprisings, Mao suits or storming of the barricades, they do offer, well, comradeship. “It’s very important to be able to talk about how you see events and how you interpret the world,” said Shawn Gude, a 25-year-old Baltimore resident and the magazine’s associate editor. “That is often a prerequisite for political action.” So, Jacobin has brought people together. What now? And what does it mean to be a socialist in 2015? It’s not clear — and that may be the point. “The reason that Jacobin has become a popular mag among a disaffected white bro socialist demo is that it’s sort of open about its lack of a program,” Wohl said. Va. to launch digital school VIRGINIA The Virginia Department of Education is launching a pilot program in the fall that will allow students to earn a high school diploma without stepping inside a classroom. One hundred students will be accepted on a first-come basis. If the pilot is successful, it could be opened to more students and could become permanent, the department said in a news release. “How this will work will vary greatly from school to school and student to student, but it will have all the requirements, all of the credits and the electives

to graduate with an advanced studies diploma or a standard diploma,” department spokesman Charles Pyle told The Daily Progress. Students will receive instruction through the state’s Virtual Virginia online class program, which provides state-approved coursework to more than 40,000 students. Local schools will issue diplomas and ensure access to textbooks, technology and other materials at no cost. Albemarle County offers its own online courses, as well as classes through Virtual Virginia. About 50 students take

courses through the state, Albemarle public schools spokesman Phil Giaramita told The Daily Progress. “We’re not yet sure if there will be any interest in the county for the pilot, but certainly the trend in education is heading down this path,” Giaramita said. “But several issues have to be resolved, including course quality and teacher load.” While the courses will be online, Pyle said students enrolled in the pilot program can participate in their local school’s extracurricular activities such as sports or band. Md. clarifies solo-kid policy MARYLAND After an outcry over one family’s “free-range” parenting case, Maryland officials on Friday clarified the state’s policy on how authorities handle cases of children walking or playing alone outdoors, saying the state shouldn’t investigate unless kids are harmed or face substantial risk of harm. The mother in that case, which garnered international attention, called the clarification an important first step in reinforcing the rights of parents to choose how they wish to raise their children. The updated policy directive about the involvement of Child Protective Services, first reported by The Washington Post, comes after the state agency ruled out neglect in the first of two cases against Danielle and

Alexander Meitiv. The Meitivs had allowed their 10-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter to walk home from a park in December. Police stopped the children and drove them home after someone reported seeing them, a case that prompted wide debate about socalled “free-range” parenting. In the updated document, the agency specifically addresses when children are playing or walking unsupervised. It says children will not be considered neglected without evidence that while unsupervised the child has been harmed or placed at substantial risk of being harmed. The Meitivs, who live in Silver Spring, have said they have gradually allowed their children more freedom to walk on their own in familiar areas. The

couple are “free-range” parenting advocates who encourage independence and exploration for their children. Danielle Meitiv said the state’s new policy clarification falls short because it doesn’t specifically direct CPS to first contact parents before children are taken into custody. She also said CPS should respect decisions by parents to let their children walk unattended. “Obviously CPS has an important role to play into protecting children. That role should not supercede the parents’ rights and responsibilities to take care of their kids, because frankly I think the overwhelming majority of parents have their children’s best interests in mind,” Meitiv said. “I think CPS should start from that position.”

local be a small fraction of the usual cost. The key was to insert it along an existing line, eliminating the need to dig new tunnels. Just as an above-ground station was added for NoMa behind Union Station and is in the works for Potomac Yard in Alexandria, the 2024 team imagined tacking on an additional Orange Line station beside RFK stadium, though closer to the Anacostia River.

Under proposed plans to lure the Olympics to D.C., RFK Stadium would be completely rebuilt and become home to the Redskins.

A bid for improvement While D.C. didn’t bag the Olympics, the plans could help guide the region’s future THE DISTRICT For more than a year, some of Washington’s most accomplished architects, engineers and planners assembled a vision for how the region could look a decade from now. Huddled in secret brainstorming meetings, they plotted the most idyllic Washington and inner suburbs they could imagine for living, working, visiting and admiring. They dreamed of a city that had addressed its transit woes, harnessed the potential of both its rivers and escaped its reputation as a breeding ground for political dysfunction. Their goal was to win the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. And they failed. But even though Washington lost the Olympic bid, their plan presents a strong case for still executing that vision. Now, for the first time, we get to see the details: the closely held architectural renderings and transportation schemes for how the city would have rapidly transformed over the course of the next 10 years.

The planning team has shared their blueprint exclusively with The Washington Post. Here is a look at five ways the region could carry forward the torch they lit.

Expanding the river

Revitalizing the east The 2024 team saw great potential to execute Pierre L’Enfant’s original design and develop more of the city along the Anacostia. They plotted to build a new Redskins stadium either on the site where RFK stadium stands or on Poplar Point. They envisioned turning the Pepco facilities on Benning Road into a jobs hub. And they decided that Hill East, a 67-acre waterfront parcel next to RFK, should become affordable housing, a top priority for the District. During the Olympic Games, these would have temporarily served as the main stadium, a broadcast center and the Olympic Village, respectively. District officials have nearly completed a study on how to redevelop the RFK property. The Redskins have begun discussing

a new stadium. And construction will begin next year on a 354-unit apartment building with groundfloor retail at Hill East.

Ted Leonsis for one, would like to see people swimming in the Anacostia from a beach along its shores. The Wizards, Capitals and Mystics owner, who served as vice chair of the 2024 effort, has given speeches about the importance of cleaning the Anacostia and has touted its potential. Though the USOC judges have left, the needs of the Anacostia remain. Fish there regularly sprout tumors, and cleanup efforts to make the river swimmable are expected to take at least another decade and cost potentially more than $1 billion. The planners also envisioned a series of pedestrian bridges, including one that would cross the Anacostia near RFK stadium and one across the Washington Channel from the Southwest Waterfront to East Potomac Park.

OLYMPIC COSTS

$10B

The price tag for the original plan to bring the 2024 Olympics to D.C. Even though the city was not awarded the games, plans were already made on improving infrastructure and transportation. Some believe the District should still implement the plans to improve its economy. (TWP)

Growing with the population To deal with the influx of several hundred thousand people, the organizers copied an idea from London, which created dedicated traffic lanes for shuttles between events when it played host. They proposed pulling out parking meters along Independence Avenue, creating a new lane in each direction for transit. They also figured out how to add a Metro station at what could

Polishing D.C.’s brand To much of America, sick of government dysfunction, “Washington” has become a dirty word. Its association with Congress has led it to poll worse than traffic jams. Without the Olympics, Washington can still work to improve its image — and its changing economy could serve as the catalyst. In the past 65 years, the share of the region’s economy attributable to the federal government has consistently lessened, from 38 percent of jobs in 1950 to 12 percent in 2013. Today, the Washington area has top-notch restaurants. It also has more and more jobs in technology, media, education and health care, and there is a greater focus on entrepreneurship.

Collaborating more often Local elected leaders often cannot agree on how to fund Metro, alleviate traffic or combat homelessness. They frequently engage one another in nasty bidding wars, just so a company and its jobs will move a few miles into their jurisdiction. When it came to the 2024 Olympics bid, however, they were almost unanimously on the same page. That is rarely true for the region; it wasn’t the case even when Washington angled for the Olympics in the past. Bob Peck worked on the 2012 bid, which proposed holding events from Baltimore to Richmond as a way of placating political needs. Back then, he said, “there was this sense that everybody needed their shot at this thing. This time, everybody came together.” JONATHAN O’CONNELL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Smoke from a U.S.-led airstrike rises over the outskirts of Tal Abyad, Syria.

Kurds close in on key border town AKCAKALE, TURKEY Syrian Kurdish fighters closed in on the outskirts of a strategic Islamic State-held town on the Turkish border on Sunday, Kurdish officials and an activist group said, potentially cutting off a key supply line for the extremists’ nearby de facto capital. Taking Tal Abyad, some 50 miles north of the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqa, would deprive the group of a direct route to bring in new foreign militants or supplies. The Kurdish advance, coming under the cover of intense U.S.-led coalition airstrikes in the area, also would link their two fronts and put even more pressure on Raqqa as Iraqi forces struggle to contain the group in their country. Meanwhile, thousands of Syrians cut through a border fence and crossed into Turkey on Sunday,

fleeing the intense fighting. The refugees took by surprise the Turkish troops stationed at the border village, who were overwhelmed by the large number of people crowding the crossing. Thousands of people had been gathering for more than a day on the Syrian side of the Akcakale border crossing before they broke through Sunday afternoon. Turkish troops later brought in reinforcements and gathered up the refugees on the Turkish side of the border, preventing them from going deeper into Turkey. Also Sunday, Kurdish official Idriss Naasan said that Islamic State fighters had fled from Suluk, a few miles southwest of Tal Abyad, and that Kurds now hold the town. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also said the militants had withdrawn. LEFTERIS PITARAKIS AND BASSEM MROUE (AP)

Italy warns EU over migrant plans left undone

When Jeb Bush finally says today that he’s running for president, he’ll begin the campaign with much to prove. He has just completed a well-reviewed trip through Europe. But supporters had hoped that this son of one president and brother of another would by now hold a commanding position in an unwieldy Republican field. Yet he has not broken away from the pack. Bush, 62, planned to make his candidacy official during a speech and rally at Miami Dade College. (AP)

Thousands of people marched in Hong Kong on Sunday to urge lawmakers to vote down Beijing-backed election reforms, though it was less than organizers anticipated. Pro-democracy supporters marched to city government headquarters to rally support for a veto of the government’s electoral reform package. Under the reforms to be put before lawmakers Wednesday, the candidates in the elections would be screened by a panel. (AP)

Italy warned retaliation Sunday against the European Union if governments don’t make good on proposals to take in more asylum seekers as migrants desperate to reach northern Europe camped out for a third day along borders tightened by Italy’s northern neighbors. Premier Matteo Renzi threatened an unspecified “Plan B” if the EU doesn’t show more solidarity with Italy, which has borne the brunt of rescuing migrants at sea and providing initial assistance. BUSINESS Wegmans, the Rochester, N.Y.based supermarket known for its fresh produce, reasonable prices and happy employees, opened on Sunday in Alexandria, and last week the company announced it will open a store in Tysons Corner in 2019. And people are thrilled. So thrilled that 1,800 people were waiting in line at 7 a.m. on Sunday for the Alexandria store’s grand opening, WTOP reports. Why exactly is Wegmans so beloved? “The first thing you need to know about Wegmans is it’s as special as people say it is,” said Burt Flickinger, the managing director of consumer industry consulting firm Strategic Resource Group. Wegmans has what Flickinger calls 360 degree competition. It can compete with Whole Foods, because its produce is some of the freshest in the business; it can compete with Trader Joes, because its prices are some of the most reasonable; and it can compete with Wal-Mart, because its stores are, well, massive. There are good reasons why year after year, Consumer Reports rates it as the No. 1 grocery store in the country. Really good reasons.

When Wegmans opened a store in Prince George’s County, Md., in October 2010, lines were around the block.

fruits and vegetables, but ones that never sit on the shelves for long,” Flickinger said. At the moment, the average supermarket turns over its inventory between 18 and 20 times a year, according to Strategic Resource Group. Wegmans, by contrast, goes through its produce as many as 100 times a year.

“Wegmans was on to so many trends before anyone else was even thinking about them.” JON SPRINGER , the retail editor for Supermarket News

It’s cheap An independent analysis of prices at grocery chains by Washington consumer group Checkbook found that Wegmans’ prices were 13 percent lower than the average prices found at Giant and Safeway. Part of the reason Wegmans maintains low prices is that its turnover is so efficient. Wegmans has historically been very good about managing food waste, which can be a sizable cost for other grocers, according to Flickinger. Another is that, like Trader Joes, Wegmans has recognized

European Commission: Greek bailout talks end without breakthrough

long ago that by being less reliant on big brands, and instead selling house-owned, private brands, they could manage their own prices.

Its employees are happy Wegmans has a long history of rewarding its workers. The company was, for instance, offering college scholarships long before Starbucks’ announcement this year that it too would do the same. Wegmans regularly cracks the top 10 on lists of the best places to work in the U.S.

The comet lander Philae has emerged from a seven-month slumber and communicated with Earth for 85 seconds, the European Space Agency said Sunday. The probe became the first to land on a comet when it touched down on the icy surface of 67P/ChuryumovGerasimenko in November. FRANK JORDANS (AP)

The downsides

Philae’s debut

There are skeptics of Wegmans’ reputation, especially now that the chain has grown well beyond its Rochester roots. Dismayed with what expansion has done to the grocery chain, Buffalo resident Chris Ortloff wrote a blog post about the dilemma titled “Falling out of Love: Wegmans and Me.” Wegmans has also been criticized for its balanced approach to genetically modified organisms. Last year, the company chose not to require that products sold at Wegmans supermarkets be labeled if they contain GMOs, a decision that is more in line with scientific consensus than consumer sentiment. But Wegmans’ dissenters are few and far between. “There’s a joke up in Buffalo that with all the bad weather this past winter, people would go shop at Wegmans just to cheer up,” Flickinger said. “That tells you how people feel about this place.” ROBERTO A. FERDMAN

After its historic landing in the fall, Philae conducted experiments and sent data to Earth for about 60 hours before its batteries were depleted and it was forced to shut down Scientists hoped light would charge its battery.

Philae’s awakening The burst of communication on Sunday contained 300 packages of data that were relayed by the probe’s mother ship Rosetta, which is orbiting the comet. Philae had been awake for days before it called home, scientists say.

Philae’s future Scientists will now work to change Rosetta’s orbit so that the link to the lander lasts longer and they can start sending commands for it to carry out new measurements. The next communication should come on Sunday night.

U.S. airstrike targets al-Qaeda leader in Libya

Prosecutor: Escaped killers used contractors’ tools

The U.S. says the military launched an airstrike Saturday targeting and likely killing Mokhtar BelMokhtar, an al-Qaeda leader in eastern Libya who has been charged with leading the attack on a gas plant in Algeria in 2013 that killed 35 hostages, including three Americans. The U.S. filed terrorism charges against BelMokhtar last year in connection with the Algeria attack, and officials believe he remained a threat to U.S. and Western interests. The Libyan government said the strike came after consultation with the U.S. (AP)

The two killers who cut their way out of a maximum-security prison used tools routinely stored there by contractors, returning them to their toolboxes after each night’s work so no one would notice, District Attorney Andrew Wylie said Sunday. He also said that prison worker Joyce Mitchell had agreed to pick the men up in her car but backed out because she still loved her husband and felt guilty for participating. Searchers believe the men are still near the Clinton Correctional Facility, where the manhunt continued Sunday. (AP)

Scherzer almost perfect Righty sets a Nationals record with 16 strikeouts in one-hit shutout of the Brewers NATIONALS As soon as the ball broke Carlos Gomez’s bat and floated out to right field, Anthony Rendon raced back. Nationals starter Max Scherzer was perfect to that point, sitting down all 18 batters he had faced. Rendon jumped, stretched for the ball and tumbled, but it landed just out of reach. The blooper to shallow right field to start the seventh inning felt so cheap given the way Scherzer pitched Sunday. The single may have broken up Scherzer’s bid for a perfect game, but it didn’t change the way he pitched. He was efficient, overpowering and unshakeable. In the Nationals’ 4-0 win over the Brewers, Scherzer delivered arguably the most dominant pitching performance in team history. Scherzer set a Nationals record with 16 strikeouts in a game, topping Stephen Strasburg, who held the mark with 14 punchouts in his major-league

debut on June 8, 2010. Scherzer, who notched his second career shutout, also became the third Nationals pitcher to notch a one-hit shutout. Jordan Zimmermann and Gio Gonzalez each accomplished the feat in 2013. The Nationals sorely needed a win on Sunday and another good performance from a starter. They hadn’t won back-to-back games since May 24-25. And entering the game, the Nationals had lost 11 of their previous 15. During that stretch, and including Saturday’s terrific performance from rookie starter Joe Ross, Nationals starters had a 5.29 ERA. On Sunday, Scherzer relied heavily on his two standout pitches: his fastball and his slider. From the second to the third inning, he struck out four batters in a row, needing no more than five pitches for any of them. He placed his fastball on the edges of the strike zone with ease, got hitters to think about his wicked

sliders down and away, and then blew another fastball by them. In the fourth inning, Scherzer dispatched the three hitters he faced on nine pitches, leaving the Brewers shaking their heads as they walked away. To start the seventh inning, Scherzer faced Gomez, who had struck out and popped out weakly in two previous at-bats. On the third pitch, Scherzer

fired a 96-mph fastball inside. Gomez sent it to shallow right field, where it fell in. From the ground, Rendon watched right fielder Clint Robinson throw the ball in. Scherzer didn’t flinch. He got another ball and then quickly got a flyout, popout and struck out Adam Lind. Playing without their best hitter Bryce Harper — who sat out a day after getting hit in the knee with a fastball — the banged up Nationals gave Scherzer all the run support he needed. Robinson, starting in right field for Harper, went 2-for-4 and roped a double down the left field line to drive in two runs in the seventh. With his pitch count at 104, Scherzer took the mound for the ninth inning. With a sharp slider that fooled Jason Rogers, Scherzer claimed his 15th strikeout victim. With another five pitches, Scherzer struck out Gomez, the batter who spoiled his bid at history.

KEVIN C. COX (GETTY IMAGES)

Jordan thinks he could beat his Hornets one-on-one

Christen Press got the start at forward for the U.S. in its 0-0 draw with Sweden on Friday.

U.S. still searching for winning combo up top Coach Ellis hasn’t found a forward pairing that’s worked in World Cup WOMEN’S WORLD CUP A soccer team is at its best when partnerships are in prime working order. Three combinations form the spine of the U.S. women’s national team lineup. Through two World Cup matches, though, only the center backs, Julie Johnston and Becky Sauerbrunn, have been in peak form. Central midfielders Carli Lloyd and Lauren Holiday haven’t passed well or broken down defenses. On the front line, coach Jill Ellis changed starters between games and adjusted personnel during them but is still trying to identify the ideal duo. Despite a 0-0 draw with Sweden on Friday, the Americans remain atop Group D with four points heading into the firstround finale Tuesday against Nigeria (one point).

Ellis’ squad has conceded only one goal and not lost. But it hasn’t performed to standard either, raising questions about its capability to reach the July 5 final. Counting a 0-0 draw with South Korea in the final tune-up two weeks ago, the attack has come up empty in two of the past three matches. The forwards have been blanked in all three; left wing Megan Rapinoe (two goals) and right wing Christen Press furnished the scoring in the 3-1 victory over Australia last Monday. “In the first half, it’s been hard for us to find our rhythm,” said forward Alex Morgan, who has been used off the bench as she seeks to regain form after recovering from a knee injury. “Once we start to wear teams down in the second half, we become more in control and gain more of a rhythm.” Ellis started Abby Wambach and Sydney Leroux in the opener, then added Morgan late. In the second outing, she began with Leroux and Press, then inserted Amy Rodriguez, Wambach and

Morgan in the second half. “I don’t think it was as efficient as we needed it to be,” Ellis said of the Leroux-Press partnership. When in top form, Morgan offers a blend of speed, improvisation and finishing touch. But those close to the team do not expect her at full effectiveness anytime soon. Wambach remains an aerial warrior. But her lack of pace and mobility holds back team rhythm. Lloyd and Holiday haven’t manufactured many chances, leaving Rapinoe as the primary playmaker from a wide position. There has been better news in the back. Johnston, 23, was the most polished player on the field Friday, timing tackles, reading the game and imposing a physical presence. And Sauerbrunn was cool under pressure. “A lot of teams aren’t getting tested as much, and we’re getting tested,” Ellis said. “It’s good for us, it’s good for our younger players. Those are things you hope will pay off later on.” STEVEN GOFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Nationals finally complete December trade for shortstop prospect Trea Turner from Padres

Michael Jordan’s nature isn’t to nurture. If there was any doubt, his Airness pretty much dispelled its remnants, with the trash talker extraordinaire telling L’Equipe that he’s “pretty sure” he could still beat his Charlotte Hornets players one-on-one. He doesn’t do it, though, because, as the owner, he doesn’t want to “demolish their confidence.” Instead, the Hall of Famer prefers to “let them think they’re good.” Um, thanks? He did acknowledge one thing, though: He’s 52. “I’m pretty sure I can [win oneon-one], so I don’t want to do that and demolish their confidence. So I stay away from them, I let them think they’re good … but I’m too old to do that anyway.” CINDY BOREN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Blackhawks can finish off Final at home The differences between the Blackhawks and the Lightning are so minuscule in this historically close Stanley Cup Final. Here are some things to watch as Chicago takes a 3-2 series lead into Game 6 tonight. GREG BEACHAM (AP)

Hawks at home Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith and the incumbent core of the Blackhawks’ last two championship teams raised the Stanley Cup on road ice in 2010 and 2013. They’ve got the chance to do it at home this time in front of the boisterous Chicago fans.

One-goal games The first five games in the Final have been decided by one goal, the first time that’s happened in the NHL’s final series since 1951, when Montreal and Toronto did it. Neither team has led by more than one goal at any point in the series’ 300 minutes.

Confident Lightning Much has been made of Tampa Bay’s inexperience on hockey’s biggest platform, but coach Jon Cooper and his players are confident they can force a seventh game, which would be their third of these playoffs. Four of the past seven times the Stanley Cup has been tied 2-2, the team that lost Game 5 has rebounded to win the title, including the 2004 Lightning.

It’s boring behind bars Season 3 of ‘Orange Is the New Black’ makes the monotony of prison life a bit too real STREAMING “No one here is people,” says the dour Galina Reznikov — the hardened inmate better known as Red — as she schemes her way back into the kitchen at Litchfield Penitentiary, the fictional women’s prison at the center of Netflix’s superior dramedy “Orange Is the New Black,” which is back for a third season. Red’s statement isn’t entirely true. Thanks to creator Jenji Kohan and the show’s writers, a convict is never just a rap sheet. This show is full of people. But Red (played to perfection by Kate Mulgrew) also makes a good point: Litchfield keeps bringing out the bad in everyone, reducing these women to something subhuman, which may delight fans of the show, who are primed and ready to see the worst these women can do to one another. But by now, we’ve seen it several times over. That’s mostly fine since the women of Litchfield (and their guards) have become some of

the best characters on TV. Who doesn’t mind a little more of Uzo Aduba’s antics as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren — especially when you sign her and the other women up for improv classes? This is the first time in three seasons that a viewer can sense the confinement that comes with the premise. “OITNB” relies heavily in each episode on the liberating effects of narrative flashback, telling the often unexpected stories of how each of the inmates came to be here, but more important, how they came to be the women they are. As they have before, these interludes form quite the tapestry. This season includes some great background stories, including that of prison guard John Bennett (Matt McGorry), who has a crisis of gallantry when it comes to the impending birth of his child with inmate Daya Diaz (Dascha Polanco); “Big Boo” (Lea DeLaria), who had a lousy relationship with the mother who forced her to wear dresses as a

of its employees, including assistant warden Joe Caputo (Nick Sandow) and prison counselor Sam Healy (Michael Harney) — that offers most of Season 3’s more intriguing riffs. “OITNB” is as much about social ills as it is about convicted criminals, which means that a sharp look at the free-market cruelty of privatized prisons (personified by the arrival of a dense corporate toady, played by Mike Birbiglia) is right in Kohan’s sweet spot. And although they may be currently seen rubbing against one another on a sexy Rolling Stone cover, the intertwined stories of Piper Chapman and Alex Vause (Taylor Schilling and Laura Prepon) are now completely overshadowed by the depth of the characters around them. “OITNB” is now repetitive chaos, a collage of faces and details that are all starting to blur together. That describes life in prison, but should it describe a TV show? HANK STUEVER

Period wars: ‘Poldark’ is ‘Downton’s’ moody equal In the heat of summer, where can a “Downton Abbey” lover turn for period costume drama? “Poldark”! “Poldark” is an eight-part BBC series set in the 1790s in Cornwall, England. The BBC made another version in the 1970s, but you know how it goes in TV: There’s no shame in doing the same thing again! PBS will air the new “Poldark” starting 9 p.m. Sunday. And it can match “Downton” melodramatic moment for melodramatic moment. The hero, Ross Poldark, is a strapping man with an artfully tangled mop of black hair who fought in the U.S. revolution (on the WRONG SIDE I might add), almost died and has just come home to his beloved Cornwall to reunite with Elizabeth, the love of his life. Only she thought he

had died in the war and is about to wed his cousin Francis, a wimp with a poufy hairdo. That’s not the only bad news for Poldark. The local economy sucks, and his late father has left him practically nothing, which is too bad because he needs to buy a lot of product to keep his hair in shape. In the first episode, men brawl, bodices heave and moody horse rides are taken along the moody cliffs of Cornwall. (So moody, in fact, that the Daily Mail reported tourism to the region went up after the series aired in England earlier this year.) Alas, there is no Dowager Countess type tossing off quips. But one crotchety servant shows some comic promise when he declares, “Well, pick my liver, what can we do?”

Dempsey finishes 2nd in Le Mans amateur race Actor Patrick Dempsey finally got on the podium at the 24 Hours endurance race in Le Mans, France, finishing second in the GTE Amateur category on Sunday. The 49-year-old American, a long-time star of “Grey’s Anatomy,” was one of three drivers in the DempseyProton Porsche 911 RSR team. They finished behind the winning Ferrari. Dempsey was driving Le Mans for the fourth time, but this was his first top-three finish. He has also competed in the Rolex 24 at Daytona endurance race. Dempsey’s teammates were countryman Patrick Long and Germany’s Marco Seefried. (AP)

Jimmy Fallon spends his evenings as host of NBC’s “The Tonight Show,” but his favorite part of his day is reading to his almost 2-year-old daughter, Winnie Rose. Now he’ll be reading her his very own book — “Your Baby’s First Word Will Be Dada,” available in hardcover or as a board book. “I tried to trick my daughter into saying ‘dada’ because I wanted it to be her first word,” Fallon said. “I would call everything ‘dada.’ I’d point to her bottle and go ‘dada,’ and I’d point to her food and say ‘dada.’ I really didn’t care if she was smart or anything.” Alas, Winnie Rose’s first word was “mama.” Still, Fallon joked he put in work for this book anyway. “There’s no ghost writer on this one,” he laughed. “It’s maybe 35 words total. I wrote the words ‘moo’ and ‘dada.’ That was all me. I’ll take full credit.” (AP) Mark Wahlberg tells Collider that Michael Bay may return to direct “Transformers 5”
