National Zoo unveils pregnant orangutan
Harper latest D.C. statehood spokesman?
THE DISTRICT Batang is a 19-year-old female Bornean orangutan at the National Zoo. And when she met Kyle, a 19-year-old male Bornean orangutan, sparks flew. Now, the National Zoo announced Tuesday, a baby orangutan is on the way. The announcement came after the zoo tweeted the image of a positive pregnancy test with a question mark Monday, leading to much speculation. What species was the lucky lady? Panda? Elephant? Tentacled snake? No. On Tuesday afternoon, zoo staff did a live ultrasound on a gleeful Batang, who is at 22 weeks. The gestation period of orangutans is shorter than that of humans — just 35 weeks — and Batang is expected to deliver in September. The fetus was moving, though the zoo didn’t know yet whether it was a boy or girl. A human pregnancy test

confirmed Batang was expecting on Feb. 2, the zoo said. Her pregnancy comes two years after she was taken off of birth control, and is the first orangutan pregnancy the zoo has seen in 25 years. Should Batang be “unable or unwilling to care for her infant,” the zoo said, two other orangutans were trained as surrogates. “All of our perseverance and planning paid off when we confirmed Batang’s pregnancy,” said Meredith Bastian, curator of primates and a member of the
Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Orangutan Species Survival Plan Steering Committee. “Watching her fetus develop over the past few months has been incredibly exciting, and we’re making every effort to ensure our efforts come to fruition.” Orangutans are native to Indonesia, but their habitat is threatened as rainforests have been destroyed. The number of wild orangutans has fallen 80 percent in the past 75 years, the zoo said.

You can forgive statehood advocates in D.C. for getting a little giddy when Bryce Harper decided to wear a “51st State” T-shirt in an interview Monday. The shirt came from Bailiwick Clothing Company, a local outfit that sells a variety of D.C.-centric apparel — and also made the “202” shirt Harper wore in early April. Bailiwick founder J.C. Smith told DCist the “202” shirt sold out after Harper wore it, and that the company already has had a surge in “51st State” sales since Harper’s appearance Monday. (TWP)

Marine mammals will go to yet-to-be-built seaside sanctuary BALTIMORE Eight dolphins that have spent their lives swimming in tanks will be retired from the National Aquarium in Baltimore into a seaside sanctuary. By announcing plans to move its dolphins into a protected habitat by the end of 2020, the aquarium sails into uncharted waters for the marine mammal industry. The Atlantic bottlenose dolphins won’t simply be released into open seas. The aquarium’s criteria for a sanctuary include a full-time staff, “excellent water quality” in a temperate climate, isolation pools for medical care or temporary refuge from harmful conditions and barriers to stop breeding among the dolphins or mingling with wild

Ranging in age from 7 to 44, they stopped performing scheduled shows in 2012 but remain on display in 25-year-old facilities. “We’ve learned a lot, obviously, about how to take care of them, about how to ensure that they thrive,” Racanelli said. “As that learning evolution has continued, it’s become clear to us we can go even further in terms of their health and welfare by taking this kind of step.” The aquarium has been considering new options for its dolphins, including moving them to other institutions or renovating their tanks, for several years amid growing public distaste for live animal shows. local FAIRFAX COUNTY A Virginia attorney was convicted Tuesday of taking a law firm partner and his wife hostage in their upscale McLean home in 2014 and then slashing both of their throats as part of a revenge plot. A Fairfax County jury deliberated for over seven hours before returning guilty verdicts on all charges against Andrew Schmuhl, 33, of Springfield. The jury will begin deliberating on a sentence Thursday. The maximum penalty could put Schmuhl in prison for the rest of his life. The verdict follows a dramatic
four-week trial during which Leo Fisher and his wife, Susan Duncan, testified about the bizarre and harrowing three-hour ordeal that nearly left them dead. Prosecutors said the couple only survived the “pure depravity” of the Nov. 9, 2014, attack because of their will to live and Duncan managing to punch a panic button inside their home with a bloody hand. Prosecutors said Schmuhl, and his wife, Alecia Schmuhl, hatched a plan to get even with Fisher because he had fired Alecia Schmuhl two weeks earlier

Russian hackers steal DNC files on Trump
THE KERMIT SUTRA
Frog mating more varied than thought
NATIONAL SECURITY Russian government hackers penetrated the computer network of the Democratic National Committee and gained access to the entire database of opposition research on GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump, according to committee officials and security experts who responded to the breach. The intruders so thoroughly compromised the DNC’s system that they also were able to read all email and chat traffic, DNC officials and CrowdStrike, the cyber firm called in to handle the DNC breach, said Tuesday. The networks of presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were also targeted by Russian spies, as were the computers of some GOP political action committees, officials said. The DNC said that no financial, donor or personal information appears to have been accessed or taken, suggesting that the breach was traditional espionage, not the work of criminal hackers. The intrusions are an example of Russia’s interest in the U.S. political system and its desire to understand the policies, strengths and weaknesses of a potential future president — much as American spies gather simila similar

information on foreign leaders. Russian President Vladimir Putin has spoken favorably about Trump, who has called for better relations with Russia. But Trump has not been a politician for very long, so foreign agencies are playing catch-up, analysts say. Other analysts noted that any dirt dug up in opposition research is likely to be made public anyway. Nonetheless, the DNC acted quickly after the discovery. “We treated this like the serious incident it is and reached out to CrowdStrike immediately,” said Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., the DNC chairwoman. Dmitri Alperovitch, CrowdStrike co-founder and chief technology officer, said the firm is confident the DNC’s network has eliminated the threat. But, he added, “the
Russians’ interest in the political campaign will not stop at this incident. We fully expect that they will try to get back in.” The firm identified two hacker groups that infiltrated the network, Alperovitch said. One of them, dubbed Cozy Bear, previously infiltrated networks at the White House, the State Department and the Joint Chiefs of Staff. y Bear, The other group, Fancy had targeted private and public sector networks around the e world since the mid-2000s. The he two groups penetrated the DNC C system separately, CrowdStrike e said. CrowdStrike suspects s the hackers targeted DNC employmployees with emails made to look k like they came from a colleague ue or someone trusted. (AP/TWP)
Researchers in India say they’ve found a previously unknown seventh position used by frogs to mate. The scientists, who spent 40 nights in a dense forest observing Bombay night frogs, reported their findings Tuesday in the journal PeerJ. As in other frog mating positions, the male climbs onto the female’s back. But instead of grasping her at the armpits or head, in the “dorsal straddle,” he puts his hands on the leaf, branch or tree trunk where the pair is sitting. The female lays her eggs after he dismounts. The researchers suspect that during the straddle, the male deposits sperm on her back, which then trickles down to fertilize the eggs. MALCOLM RITTER (AP)

London mayor takes a stand on body-image ads LONDON Advertising that promotes an unhealthy body image will be banned on London’s subway network, in a move that signals a backlash against suggestive marketing in public places. Starting next month, Transport for London will not allow ads that cause pressure to conform to “unrealistic or unhealthy body shape,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan, above, said in a statement. “As the father of two teenage girls, I am extremely concerned about this kind of advertising, which can demean people, particularly women, and make them ashamed of their bodies,” Khan said. “It is high time it came to an end.” Concerns were raised last year when an advertisement featuring a model in a bikini asked, “Are you beach body ready?” The ad promoted a weight-loss supplement and prompted 378 complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority. The authority has the ability to ban ads that are likely to cause widespread serious offense or harm once they come into public space. What Khan and Transport for London are moving to do, however, is to prevent them from coming into public spaces in the first place. “Nobody should feel pressurized, while they travel on the Tube or bus, into unrealistic expectations surrounding their bodies,” he said. “I want to send a clear message to the advertising industry.” DANICA KIRKA (AP)

U.S. officials have found bacteria resistant to the antibiotic of last resort from a second pig, increasing concerns about the spread of a superbug that initially surfaced in March. The latest report involves an antibiotic-resistant strain of E. coli from a pig intestine, detected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The bacteria carried a gene making it resistant to colistin, the drug used against dangerous types of superbugs that already withstand many other antibiotics. (TWP)

ISIS-inspired man kills police couple In France, attacker posts Facebook video before being killed PARIS France’s president called Tuesday for increased security in a nation already on high alert after an apparent Islamic Stateinspired attacker fatally stabbed a couple with police ties late Monday and recorded a message before he was killed by police. Authorities took three additional suspects into custody and said the assailant had a list of names for possible further attacks, including journalists and public officials. The names have not been made public. President Francois Hollande described the killings of the couple — police Capt. Jean-Baptiste Salvaing, 42, and his partner, Jessica Schneider, 36, an administrative secretary at a police department outside Paris — as “undeniably a terrorist attack” and said that “France is confronted by an extremely high terrorist threat.” The couple’s 3-year-old son was present during the attack in their home but was unharmed. Court upholds net neutrality rules Federal ruling means internet will be treated as a utility, not a luxury TECHNOLOGY In a big win for the Obama administration, a federal appeals court on Tuesday upheld the government’s “net neutrality” rules that require internet providers to treat all web traffic equally. The 2-1 ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit is a victory for consumer groups and content companies such as Netflix that
want to prevent online content from being blocked or channeled into fast and slow lanes. The rules treat broadband service like a public utility and prevent internet providers from offering preferential treatment to sites that pay for faster service. Consumers won’t see an immediate impact, since the rules have been in effect since last June. But it could make some services more expensive or limit some content, such as T-Mobile’s Binge On service that allows customers to watch unlimited video for free. The Federal Communications
Commission argued that the rules are crucial for allowing customers to go anywhere on the internet without a provider favoring its own service over that of other competitors. The FCC’s move to reclassify broadband came after President Barack Obama publicly urged the commission to protect consumers by regulating internet service as it does other public utilities. The agency has tried for years to enforce net neutrality, but the same court had twice previously struck down similar rules. Cable and telecom opponents
claim the rules prevent them from recovering costs for connecting to broadband hogs like Netflix that generate tons of internet traffic. Providers like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T say the rules threaten innovation and undermine investment in broadband infrastructure. But Judges David Tatel and Sri Srinivasan denied all challenges to the new rules, including claims that the FCC could not reclassify mobile broadband as a common carrier. That extends the reach of the rules as more people view content on mobile devices. SAM HANANEL AND TALI ARBEL (AP)

FBI is probing reports that Mateen had been on gay dating apps, was a regular at Pulse
Witness gives insight into a possible motive ED HUBER (ORLANDO SENTINEL VIA AP)
ORLANDO, FLA. The murky picture of Orlando gunman Omar Mateen grew more complex Tuesday with word that the FBI is investigating whether he had been a regular at Pulse, the gay dance club he attacked, and had been living a secret life as a gay man. As victims described the bloody horror of the massacre during a riveting hospital news conference, investigators continued to gather information on the 29-year-old American-born Muslim for clues to the attack that left 49 victims dead. A number of possible explanations and motives for the bloodbath have emerged, with Mateen professing allegiance to the Islamic State group in a 911 call during the attack, his ex-wife saying he was mentally ill, and his father suggesting he was driven by hatred of gays. On Tuesday, a U.S. official said the FBI is looking into news reports quoting patrons of Pulse as saying that Mateen frequented the nightspot and reached out to men on gay dating apps. Jim Van Horn, 71, said that he saw Mateen repeatedly at the bar and talked to him once. “He was a homosexual and he was trying to pick up men,” Van Horn said. “He would walk

up to them and then he would maybe put his arm around ’em or somet h i ng and maybe try Mateen to get them to dance a little bit or something.” The attack early Sunday ended with Mateen being shot to death by a SWAT team. Gay dating app Jack’d said it has been unable to confirm so far that Mateen had a profile on the service. Grindr officials said they “will continue to cooperate with the authorities and do not comment on ongoing investigations.” And Adam4Adam said the company is looking at conversations and profiles in the Orlando area for any activity by Mateen but hasn’t found anything yet.
Mateen’s father, Seddique Mateen, denied his son was gay and said that if he had been in the nightclub before, he may have been “scouting the place.” The elder Mateen, who lives in Port St. Lucie, Fla., said that apart from the time his son got angry a few months ago over seeing two men kissing, he never saw any anti-gay behavior from him. Psychological studies have shown that some men with repressed same-sex desires may express anti-gay views, especially if they grew up in families that opposed homosexuality. “People who are struggling to come to terms with their sexual identity do at times react to that by doing the exact opposite, which could be to become more masculine or more vocal about their
ideals of a traditional family,” said Michael Newcomb, a Northwestern University psychologist. Mateen’s ex-wife, Sitora Yusufiy, said earlier in the week that he was mentally ill and abusive. Amid the latest reports about his club-going, she told CNN: “Well, when we had gotten married, he confessed to me about his past that was recent at that time and that he very much enjoyed going to clubs and the nightlife and there was a lot of pictures of him. … I feel like it’s a side of him or a part of him that he lived but probably didn’t want everybody to know about.” The FBI has recovered Mateen’s phone and will use location data to verify whether he previously visited the club, said another anonymous official. WITNESS The gunman who opened fire inside a nightclub in Orlando said he carried out the attack because he wanted “Americans to stop bombing his country,” according to a witness who survived the rampage. This account from Patience Carter, a 20-year-old who was inside the club during a threehour hostage standoff, offers the first glimpse at what the shooter said spurred him to carry out the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history. Carter, above, said the gunman made his claims about his motivation during the same 911 call in which he pledged allegiance to the Islamic State. At one point, while about two dozen hostages were in the bathrooms inside Pulse, Carter said the gunman asked if there were any black people in the room. When one man said yes, the shooter said, “‘You know I don’t have a problem with black people,’ ” Carter recalled during a news conference. She said he added: “‘This is about my country. You guys suffered enough.’ ” These comments further add to the uncertainty regarding what may have inspired the gunman, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, who was born in the U.S. to parents from Afghanistan. Even as investigators continued Tuesday to delve deeper into Mateen’s life, officials have not publicly said what they believe may have motivated him to open fire inside Pulse. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

A law enforcement official says investigators who have spoken with the Orlando gunman’s wife, Noor Salman, are looking into whether they both were recently at or outside Pulse nightclub, the club gunman Omar Mateen attacked, after they were told just that. President: Using ‘radical Islam’ as a label is a political talking point — not a strategy POLITICS An angry President Obama on Tuesday lashed out at Republicans, and particularly Donald Trump, who have called him soft on terrorism, warning that “loose talk” about Muslims has harmed the United States’ campaign against militant groups in the Middle East and elsewhere. Obama challenged the demand by his critics that he characterize acts of terrorism, including the mass shooting in Orlando, as the work of “radical Islam” — a phrase the president has refused to use because he believes it unfairly implicates an entire religious group for the acts of militant extremists. A day earlier, Trump used the phrase to question Obama’s commitment to stopping terrorist acts, including the Orlando shooting, by saying the president refuses to define the enemy. “That’s the key, they tell us. We can’t get ISIL unless we call them ‘radical Islamists,’ ” Obama said, referring to the Islamic State militant group after meeting with his National Security Council to discuss the administration’s counterterrorism strategy. “What exactly would using this label accomplish? What exactly would it change? Would it make ISIL less committed to trying to kill Americans? Would it bring in more allies? Is there a military strategy that is served by this?
The answer is, none of the above. Calling a threat by a different name does not make it go away. This is a political distraction.” The president added: “There’s no magic to the phrase ‘radical Islam.’ It’s a political talking point; it’s not a strategy.” The remarks were Obama’s most forceful rebuttal to Trump since he became the presumptive GOP presidential nominee. Though he did not mention Trump by name, Obama lambasted his proposals to ban all Muslims from immigrating to the United States and challenged Republican leaders to reject his demagoguery. “We are starting to see where this kind of rhetoric and loose talk and sloppiness about who exactly we are fighting, where this can lead us,” Obama said. Trump, he said, “singles out immigrants and suggests entire religious communities are complicit in violence. Where does this stop?” Trump responded in an email to the Associated Press that Obama “claims to know our enemy, and yet he continues to prioritize our enemy over our allies, and for that matter, the American people.” The slaying of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando on Sunday by a shooter who purportedly was inspired by ISIS has quickly become a political flashpoint. The massacre has thrust issues of terrorism, gun control and national security to

Islam,” but she did not fault Obama for not using it, and said the action to fight terrorism was more important than the rhetoric. As he has in the past, the president warned that using inflamed rhetoric about Muslims and Islam threatens to play into the motives of terrorist groups that use propaganda to portray a U.S. war against Islam and recruit new members. “That’s not the America we want,” said Obama, who will travel to Orlando on Thursday. “It won’t make us more safe, it will make us less safe, fueling ISIL’s notion that the West hates Muslims, making young Muslims in this country and around the world feel like, no matter what they do, they’re going to be under suspicion and under attack.” DAVID NAKAMURA (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Dr. Michael Cheatham, who has been treating the wounded from the Pulse nightclub shooting, said Tuesday he would be surprised if the death toll doesn’t rise. He said six people are still critically ill. Of those six in intensive care, he added that two are “profoundly ill.” He says he suspects they may survive but will likely have lasting health problems. Leadership skills: Cousins showing his new persona Cousins midway through training camp last year, the team rarely had true leadership from a position that demands it. Billy Kilmer in the 1970s might have been the last man in the huddle to truly urge his Washington teammates forward. “[Cousins] gets so fired up sometimes,” coach Jay Gruden said with a smile. Cousins is also inspiring the defense … to shut him up. When Cousins was stopped trying to score on an option run, defensive players chanted, “You like that!” Cousins didn’t take it personally. This isn’t trash talking. He’s trying to motivate his offensive teammates rather than heckle the defense. But minicamp has an energy not seen in years. Today’s light practice is the final workout until training camp opens July 28, and players seem fresh and ready for more. Cousins said he’ll take a break to mentally recharge, but there are still contract talks pending. Either he agrees to a long-term deal

After completing a long touchdown pass to DeSean Jackson, Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins raced down the sideline yelling, “You all love that.” And it was only a minicamp practice. Returning as the starter for the first time in his five-year career has Cousins more vocal and more confident. Every big play has him cheering like it’s a playoff score. It didn’t matter that Tuesday’s practice was seen by only a few spectators. It’s a new persona born of a midseason postgame outburst — “You like that!” — that transformed the former mild-mannered backup. “If it brings energy, it’s a good thing,” Cousins said. The Redskins haven’t had a vocal, rah-rah quarterback since Joe Theismann more than three decades ago. Even then, a veteran team largely ignored it. before July 15 or he’ll play on a one-season franchise tag of $19.95 million. Don’t expect daily contract updates. The two sides outlined their positions in March and they’ll largely stay there until the deadline approaches. Cousins has the leverage. Should he repeat his standout 2015 season — when he passed for a team-record 4,166 yards — then his next long-term deal might average nearly $20 million. If Cousins falters, he’ll still find a backup deal somewhere worth at least $8 million a year.

Papelbon goes on disabled list NATIONALS The Nationals put closer Jonathan Papelbon on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, retroactive to June 13, with a strained right intercostal — a muscle between the ribs. Papelbon allowed a solo home run in the Nationals’ walk-off win Sunday, but was mysteriously inactive Monday night. Manager Dusty Baker said then that Papelbon was “sore,” but that the trouble was not with his arm. Papelbon explained Tuesday that he felt something while warming up Sunday. “You didn’t think anything of it, but then when he came in the next day all crooked, and

His stellar shooting in Game 5 has Cavaliers in position to tie series NBA FINALS Kyrie Irving’s ankle-breaking crossover dribble happened at almost the exact spot where his first NBA Finals ended brutally last year with his left leg buckling and kneecap shattering. He didn’t crumble this time, using his left hand to keep his balance before switching hands, stopping, whirling and dropping a contested fadeaway shot over the Warriors’ Klay Thompson. In the biggest game of his life,
Irving was astounding Monday night in the Warriors’ arena. Dropping shots all over the floor, he matched teammate LeBron James by scoring 41 points as the Cavaliers kept their season alive with a 112-97 win in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. The Warriors’ lead in the series was cut to 3-2. Irving was 17-for-24 from the field and made all but two of his seven 3-point attempts. “Probably one of the greatest performances I’ve ever seen live,” said James, who joined Irving as the only teammates in finals history to each score 40 points in the same game.

The third member of the Cavaliers’ Big Three, Kevin Love, was hardly a factor, scoring just two points. Irving will try to rise to the occasion again Thursday (9 p.m., ABC) when the series resumes in Cleveland. The Warriors will get back forward Draymond Green, who was suspended for Game 5. He was fourth in the NFL with 1,089 yards rushing last season. No more taboo? NHL planning a team in Vegas NHL The NHL is ready to roll the dice on Las Vegas. A person with direct knowledge of the decision said the league has settled on Las Vegas as its choice for expansion, provided organizers can come up with a $500 million fee. The NHL Board of Governors will address the issue at its next meeting — June 22 in Las Vegas. Quebec City also was considered for expansion. A new team would start play no earlier than the 2017-18 season. The franchise would be the NHL’s 31st team and the first major professional sports franchise in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas bid says it has secured more than 13,200 season-ticket deposits for the team, which would play in T-Mobile Arena, a new, privately funded building on the south end of the Strip. The days when sports leagues were wary of potential corruption in Vegas’ massive sports betting scene are apparently over. The Raiders have held serious discussions with Vegas leaders in recent months about moving there from Oakland. Raiders owner Mark Davis has suggested that he and his partners, including casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, could build a $1.4 billion domed stadium near the Strip with the help of substantial public money. Soccer great David Beckham said he might be able to bring an MLS team to Las Vegas if that stadium were built. GREG BEACHAM (AP)

GOT PLANS THIS WEEK?
Breaking the claw “IF YOU’RE TAKING MORE THAN FIVE MINUTES TO PICK A CRAB, YOU’RE PROBABLY DOING SOMETHING WRONG,” says Johnny Spero, the chef
behind Cappy’s Crabs, a pop-up crab shack now open in Petworth (828 Upshur St. NW) through Labor Day. Though he admits there’s
Biscuit Bash
more than one way to extract crab meat, Spero prefers the style he learned from his dad growing up in Maryland, which he shares below. (See GIFs online at washingtonpost.com/express.) And if you do end up taking a little longer than most, don’t fret. “One of the best things about picking crabs is having a beer with friends, so most of the time you’re not focusing on the crab,” Spero says. Remove lungs and ‘mustard’
“There’s a rule in my family that the first crab you touch, you have to take it,” Spero says. “You can’t search for the biggest one.” Make sure you choose carefully!
Holding the crab in one hand, use your other hand to remove the legs one by one and set them aside for later. Simply twist them gently and they should release from the body.
Turn the crab on its back and insert a knife under the crab’s apron, or the pointy piece on its stomach. Slide the knife under the whole shell and peel it off to expose the inside.
Remove the lungs as well as the yellow, mustard-like substance, which is part of the crab’s digestive system. “My grandma used to eat everything,” Spero says.

Crack off the mouth portion (it’s the small part that juts out) and toss it. Then crack the body in half down the middle using your hands.
Push in on one of the chambers so that it exposes the meat. Pick it out with your fingers or the knife — or, if you’re Spero, the set of tweezers you keep on your apron.
Spero says the smaller legs are usually not worth wasting your time on, so focus on the claws. Use your hands to break both claws apart along the joints.
Put the flat edge of the claw on the table and place the knife over the curved edge. Use a mallet to fracture it and pull out the meat. “There’s no need to smash it,” Spero says.

Now in its third year, the Biscuit Bash is a chance for some of the area’s top chefs to show off their baking prowess. This year’s event — which takes place at Art and Soul on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. — includes submissions from chef Matt Baker of the forthcoming restaurant Gravitas, Tiffany MacIsaac from the recently opened Buttercream Bakeshop, and Alex McCoy from Alfie’s in Park View. Drinks will be provided by Derek Brown of Columbia Room and Gina Chersevani of Buffalo & Bergen. The winner will be selected by the audience, as well as a group of judges. Right Proper Brewing will be pouring booze, and sweets will be courtesy of Ice Cream Jubilee. Tickets are $40, with a portion of proceeds benefiting D.C. Central Kitchen. HOLLEY SIMMONS (EXPRESS)

entertainment Whenever tragedy strikes, late-night talk show hosts must walk the line of addressing the horror — and then somehow segue into their job of hosting a comedy show. On Monday, hosts talked about the mass shooting in Orlando over the weekend, which left 49 people dead and 53 injured. Here’s how some of the comedians covered the news. ‘The Daily Show with Trevor Noah’
‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ Samantha Bee expressed rage over the nightclub massacre.

Noah, still getting used to his seat post-Jon Stewart, jumped right into the fray and devoted nearly eight minutes to the shooting. “I have to talk about Saturday night’s devastating attack,” he told the audience. “I couldn’t be more sad and sickened by the events.” Noah, unlike the other hosts, tempered some of his harsh words with some quick jokes: “We shouldn’t allow this to be normal. It’s not a normal thing. It’s like milk from almonds or sushi from Walgreens. It’s not normal, people.”
internet. Or killed by someone you don’t know. This was just one bad guy here. Forty-nine good people and one bad guy. And there will always be more good than evil.”
Colbert didn’t bother with an opening sequence, starting his show sitting at his desk and emphasizing grief at realizing how many times this horror has happened. “It’s as if there’s a national script that we have learned, and I think by accepting the script, we tacitly accept that the script will end the same way every time, with nothing changing. Except for the loved ones and the families of the victims, for whom nothing will ever be the same. “These people in Orlando were apparently targeted because of who they love. ... And there have been outpourings of love throughout the country and around the world. … Love

allows us to change the script. So love your country, love your family, love the families and the victims and the people of Orlando.”
‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ Fallon ditched the main title sequence and addressed the audience directly, focusing his comments on diversity: “This country was built on the idea
that we do not all agree on everything, that we are a tolerant free nation that encourages debate, free thinking, believing, or not, in what you choose. “We need to get back to being brave enough to accept that we have different opinions and that’s OK. Because that’s what America is built on. The idea that we can stand up and speak our minds and live our lives and not be punished for that. Or mocked on the

Meyers also scrapped his monologue, and turned the conversation to gun control. “Whether the shooter was a homophobe, mentally ill, a terrorist inspired by ISIS or all three, what allowed him to kill so many people on Sunday was his gun. And that means we’re likely about to enter yet another contentious national debate about gun control.” Later, he added, “When given a chance, Congress consistently chooses nothing as a course of action.”
‘Full Frontal with Samantha Bee’ On TBS, Bee expressed barely suppressed rage: “Well, here we are. Now, after a massacre, the standard operating procedure is that you stand on stage and deliver some well-meaning words about how we will get through this together, how love wins, how love conquers hate,” she said. “And that is great. That is beautiful. But you know what? F--- it. I am too angry for that! Love does not win, unless we start loving each other enough to fix our f---ing problems.”

In a new interview with The Guardian, Patricia Clarkson took aim at recent comments by “Game of Thrones” actor Kit Harington, who said that being called a hunk is “demeaning.” “There are still so many movies made starring 50 men and one woman,” the “Parks and Recreation” actress said. “A white male actor should never be allowed to complain about anything. Shut up and sit in the corner.” Specifically referencing Harington’s remarks, she added, “He’s a sex symbol. Get over it. You have an amazing career and you’re on a hot show. Take your shirt off.” (EXPRESS)
