Paris public transport company RATP said a baby boy born on a train will get free rides in the French capital until he is 25. Live-tweeting the event Monday, the RATP said the baby was born on the RER A line in the center of Paris, disrupting train traffic. Rescue workers took the mother and child to the hospital. The RER A line issued “sincere congratulations” to the baby’s mother — and tweeted that traffic was back to normal. (AP)

A cat in England traveled as far as 80 miles trapped in the air vent of a Ford Focus, The Guardian reported Monday. The car’s owner, Steven Kane, spotted the male tabby upon arriving in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, after two days of driving during a family vacation. The RSPCA has custody of the cat, who is not injured and has been nicknamed Ford. Kane’s brother hopes to adopt the animal if no owner is found. (EXPRESS)

A Florida man contacted the sheriff’s office to complain he’d been sold a bad batch of meth, HuffPost reported Friday. Douglas Peter Kelly, 49, of Hawthorne, called the Putnam County Sheriff’s office to say he’d had a “violent reaction” to smoking the meth and wanted to “press charges” against the dealer who sold it to him. He asked detectives to test the drug, which they did. It was meth. Kelly was arrested and charged. (EXPRESS)

REGION Summer heat is here. Heat index values — what it feels like factoring in temperature and humidity — eclipsed 100 Monday afternoon throughout the region, generally peaking between 100 and 105. The temperature at Dulles International Airport hit 94 degrees, tying the record high for the date set in 2007. The sultry air was already palpable by midmorning Monday. On social media, Capital Weather Gang readers expressed their dismay. It’s “like living under a steamed blanket, tweeted Cara Thuringer. “It’s already at that point outside, where you walk outside, and begin dripping in sweat in about a minute, even if you’re not actually doing anything, reader Bryan Grimaldi posted on Facebook. The National Weather Service urged people to take precautions in the hottest weather of the year so far. “The heat and humidity may cause heat stress during outdoor exertion or extended

exposure, it said. D.C. put its emergency heat plan into place as temperatures climbed into the 90s on Monday. Cooling centers are available in government buildings, including libraries, recreation centers and homeless shelters, until 6 p.m. on heat advisory days or until officials say it is safe to be outdoors, the statement said. Although today’s temperatures are forecast to reach the 90s for a second straight day, they’ll probably fall short of the

records in Washington, Dulles and Baltimore of 99, 98 and 99, all from 1994. Clouds and lateday storms are likely to break the heat before temperatures can climb that high. Monday’s heat advisory was the first of 2018. The Weather Service issues a heat advisory in the D.C. region when the heat index is forecast to reach at least 105 degrees. There are usually five or six heat advisories per summer. JASON SAMENOW (THE WASHINGTON POST)

D.C. voters slow to hit polls Low turnout in today’s primaries could bring unpredictable results THE DISTRICT The District’s mayor and attorney general and about half of D.C. lawmakers face re-election in today’s Democratic primary, which also features a contentious ballot initiative that would affect pay for restaurant servers, bartenders and others who make a living from tips. So far, voters don’t seem that interested. As early voting ended Friday, turnout for local elections in D.C. was on track to be exceptionally low. Roughly 3 percent of registered voters cast early ballots, compared to an already low 4 percent in 2014, the last mayoral primary. The total voter turnout in 2014, including early and absentee ballots, was 27 percent. That District residents are not flocking to the polls this year is not necessarily surprising: Mayor Muriel Bowser faces nominal opposition and is poised to become the first mayor to win two terms since 2006, and most of the other races appear to favor incumbents — although some face credible challengers. But poor turnout can result in surprises. A strong showing of progressive Democrats combined with low overall turnout could be a factor in the race for D.C. Council chairman — in which Democratic incumbent Phil Mendelson faces a challenge

from the left by activist Ed Lazere — and Initiative 77, a ballot question which would mandate that employers pay more to tipped workers. In overwhelmingly Democratic D.C., winning the primary is tantamount to victory in the general election — unless an independent challenger emerges in time for the November contest. Bowser has two challengers, James Butler and Ernest E. Johnson, but has been on a glide path to victory in the primary since March, when former mayor and current council member Vincent Gray — whom Bowser defeated in 2014 — opted out of a rematch. Attorney General Karl A. Racine, who had also been considered a viable challenger, announced in

D.C.’s primary primer Voters in D.C. go to the polls today in a primary election. The primary features Initiative 77, a ballot measure that would affect pay for those who make a living from tips. Residents can register to vote at their polling place today with proof of address, but the deadline to change party affiliations has passed. Only voters registered with a major party — Democratic, Republican, D.C. Statehood Green or Libertarian — can vote on the candidates appearing on that party’s ballot. But any voter can cast a ballot for Initiative 77. To find your polling place, visit dcboe.org. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Any voter in line by 8 p.m. will be allowed to cast a ballot. September that he would seek re-election to his current job. He is uncontested. The District does not have full representation in Congress, but its federal delegation is also on the ballot Tuesday. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D, is seeking her 15th term as the District’s representative — with limited voting rights — in the House. Norton, a feminist icon and leader in the civil rights movement, faces an underdog challenger in former Obama administration official Kim R. Ford. The District’s shadow representative and one of its shadow senators — symbolic posts created to advocate full time for D.C. statehood — are also up for election. Incumbent shadow representative Franklin Garcia is running unopposed. Shadow senator Michael D. Brown, who has been in office since 2007, confronts an energetic challenge from Andria Thomas, who promises to revive the moribund statehood movement. Also on the ballot is Initiative 77, which would require businesses to pay tipped workers a base hourly wage of $15 by 2025. Those workers are covered by the District’s minimum wage, which is $12.50 and on track to reach $15 by 2020. But employers can count tips toward the total. A “yes” vote on 77 would require employers to pay the full minimum wage, after a phase-in period, with tips being added. TRANSPORTATION Metro officials knew in 2012 that thousands of customers were being overcharged as a result of erroneous fare calculations, but didn’t act to correct the problem until last year — and even then only reimbursed those affected after 2015, according to a newly publicized report. In a fine-print addendum to a news release on fare increases last summer, Metro announced it was correcting a long-standing problem with its posted fares: The agency had made calculation errors, including incorrectly plotting some platform locations, that led to miscalculated fares in hundreds of the agency’s 16,000 possible fare combinations. Metro said it would provide SmarTrip credits to any customers who were overcharged more than $2 between 2015 and 2017. But the inaccurate calculations were known at least as far back as 2012, according to the nowpublic report that precipitated the changes, originally sought as part of a public records request by WAMU and obtained by The Washington Post on Monday. The report details how even though the issue was raised with officials multiple times, Metro

twice neglected to address it before 2017. The Washington Post first asked the agency’s media relations department about fare calculations from station to station in 2012 in response to a question from a reader, Metro acknowledges in its report. At the time, the transit agency’s planning department acknowledged the problem. “The Office of Media Relations (MREL) brought to [the Office of Planning’s] attention in 2012 correspondence from the Washington Post inquiring about apparent discrepancies in certain station-to-station fares,” the report said. Asked Monday why it took five years to resolve the issue, Metro said it didn’t understand the extent of the problem.

“What began as an inquiry from The Washington Post regarding a specific fare between two stations was not fully understood until years later,” Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said. Asked why refund credits were not offered to customers who were overcharged before 2015, Stessel said: “The credits were based on two years of trip data, the longest duration that was technically feasible.” Greenbelt, Southern Avenue, Silver Spring, Georgia Ave-Petworth, Glenmont, Fort Totten, Franconia-Springfield and Prince George’s Plaza were the eight stations most affected. In October 2016, the agency concluded, more than 265,000 SmarTrip users were incorrectly charged.

merely have an American presence in space. We must have American dominance in space,” Trump said. He added: “We are going to have the Air Force and we are going to have the Space Force, separate but equal.” The president also used the White House event to establish a new policy for reducing satellite clutter in space. The policy calls for providing a safe and secure environment up in orbit, as satellite traffic increases. It also sets up new guidelines for satellite design and operation, to avoid collisions and spacecraft breakups. TECHNOLOGY Apple is trying to drag the United States’ antiquated system for handling 911 calls into the 21st century. The iPhone’s next operating system, due in September, will automatically deliver quicker and more reliable information on the location of 911 calls to about 6,300 emergency response centers. An estimated 80 percent of roughly 240 million emergency calls in the U.S. this year will come from mobile phones, most of which are capable of precisely tracking where their users are. But emergency call centers don’t get that detailed location information. They get the location of the cellular tower transmitting the call, and must rely on other methods to figure out the caller’s location. Apple’s upcoming 911 feature relies on technology from RapidSOS, a New York startup. The new approach sends location data from an iPhone to a “clearinghouse” accessible to emergency call centers. Only those centers will be able to see the data during the call, and none of it can be used for nonemergency purposes, according to Apple. Individual call centers will have to embrace the technology required to communicate with the RapidSOS clearinghouse. Some centers already have the compatible software, according to Apple, but others will have to install upgrades to their existing software. MICHAEL LIEDTKE (AP)

nation+world High court declines to weigh in on setting limits on redistricting POLITICS The Supreme Court on Monday allowed electoral maps that were challenged as excessively partisan to remain in place for now, declining to rule on the bigger issue of whether to put limits on redistricting for political gain. In unanimous rulings, the court ruled against Wisconsin Democrats who challenged legislative districts that gave Republicans a

huge edge in the state legislature, and also did not side with Maryland Republicans who objected to a single congressional district. Proceedings in both cases will continue in lower courts. In Wisconsin, Democrats had prevailed in a trial in which the court ruled that redistricting went too far. Republicans hold a huge edge in the legislature even though the state is closely divided. The Supreme Court said the plaintiffs had failed to prove that they have the right to sue on a statewide basis. Waiting in the wings is a suit

In exile, male Rohingya finally free to don pants CHAKMARKUL, BANGLADESH In 28 years, Abdul Aziz had never known the pleasure of wearing pants. Rohingya Muslim men like him were restricted to wearing traditional sarongs, or longyis, in their native Myanmar. It was an unofficial uniform that identified Muslims as inferior, Rohingya refugees said. Refugees said that outside of cities and towns, wearing pants was discouraged by local authorities in some places. More than 700,000 Rohingya fled Myanmar, also known as Burma, and crossed into Bangladesh after a violent military crackdown in August. In the refugee camps, they can choose to wear what they like. “Now, I live in a democracy,” Abdul Aziz said, “and in democracies, they wear pants.” On Saturday, the refugee camps buzzed with excitement for the festival of Eid, which marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and for which Muslims traditionally buy new clothing. Several men, including Abdul Aziz, were wearing pants for the first time. Abdul Aziz chose a pair of slim-fit blue jeans, which he wore under a long white shirt. About a dozen refugees in the

camps said the ban on pants happened after bouts of violence in 2012 and 2016. Pants are associated in Myanmar with Western culture, and are often a signifier of wealth and education. They also connote power — British colonial soldiers were once called “trouser people” in the Myanmar language. Traditional longyis are worn by all men in Myanmar, not just Muslims — though Buddhist millennials are increasingly seen in Western-influenced garb. But young Rohingya men said they did not have the same freedom as their Buddhist counterparts to wear pants in villages. Refugees said that there was never a formal law against wearing pants but that security

personnel at checkpoints accused wearers of being illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, or of being terrorists. Wearing pants in the camps is also a form of cultural assimilation. With little hope of returning to Myanmar, many Rohingya are starting to adopt facets of Bangladeshi culture, preparing to settle in a foreign land. Soiyed Alom, a 73-year-old man wearing a longyi, broke into tears when asked how it felt to see Rohingya men in pants. “I see all these Bangladeshi men — rich, educated people wear pants,” he said. “When I see Rohingya people also wearing them, I feel very happy. I’d like to wear them, too.” VIDHI DOSHI

Use of artificial trans fats now banned in U.S. Once found in everything from frozen pizza to coffee creamer, artificial trans fats are — as of Monday — banished from U.S. restaurants and grocery stores once current inventories run out. The Food and Drug Administration ruled in 2015 that the ingredient, used since the 1950s to extend shelf life and improve texture in processed foods, was unsafe to eat. Scientists long ago found that the modified form of vegetable oil raised “bad” cholesterol and contributed to heart disease and other ills. Other countries are beginning to contemplate similar prohibitions. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘No more free passes’ at border

WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX

Nielsen denies policy shift on border splits

IMMIGRATION Undaunted and unapologetic, President Trump defended his administration’s borderprotection policies Monday in the face of rising national outrage over the forced separation of migrant children from their parents. Tough action is needed to fight illegal immigration, he declared, and the U.S. “will not be a migrant camp” on his watch. Besides, the Democrats are to blame, not him, Trump insisted as images of children held in fenced cages fueled a growing chorus of condemnation from both political parties, four former first ladies and national evangelical leaders. The children are being held separately from parents who have been arrested under the administration’s “zerotolerance” policy for illegal border crossings. “I say very strongly, it’s the Democrats’ fault,” Trump said Monday, citing more lenient policies that had not charged all migrants who had crossed illegally. Republican lawmakers are growing ever more concerned about negative effects on their re-election campaigns this fall, and Trump was to travel to Capitol Hill today for a strategy session on possible legislation. Underscoring the sensitivity of the family separation issue, language curbing the taking of immigrant children from parents held in custody will be added to the House’s conservative

immigration bill, one House GOP aide said Monday, A similar provision is already in a compromise GOP immigration measure between party conservatives and moderates, with the House expected to vote on both late this week. The administration is hoping to force Democrats to vote for the bills or bear some political cost in November’s midterm elections. In the meantime, the administration says it doesn’t like the family separations either but migrants who arrive illegally simply won’t be released or loosely kept track of. “The United States will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility,” Trump declared. “Not on my watch.” Nearly 2,000 children were separated from their families over a six-week period in April and May after Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the new “zero-tolerance” policy that refers all cases of illegal entry for criminal prosecution. Prior procedure had limited prosecution for many family entrants, in part because regulations prohibit detaining children with their parents since the children are not charged with a crime and the parents are. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen rejected criticism of her department. “We will not apologize for the job we do or for the job law

Amid uproar, White House defends its policy of separating migrant children from parents

Young people who have been taken into custody for illegal entry into the U.S. sit and rest in cages at a facility in McAllen, Texas, on Sunday.

Opposition builds The Rev. Franklin Graham, a Trump ally, called the administration policy that forces the separation of migrant children from their families “disgraceful.” Several religious groups have pushed to stop it, and former first lady Laura Bush called it “immoral” in a Washington Post column. Republican lawmakers also weighed in. Michigan Rep. Fred Upton called for an end to the “ugly and inhumane practice,” and Kansas Sen. Pat Roberts said he is “against using parental separation as a deterrent to illegal immigration.” (AP)

jail free cards.” The current holding areas have drawn widespread attention after journalists gained access to one site Sunday. At a McAllen, Texas, detention center, hundreds of children wait in a series of cages created by metal fencing. One cage had 20 children inside. Scattered about are large foil sheets intended to serve as blankets. Sessions, on Monday, called on Congress to act: “If we build the wall, if we pass legislation to end the lawlessness, we won’t face these terrible choices.” White House officials have privately embraced the policy as negotiating tactic to win votes for legislation to fulfil the president’s pledge to build a border wall and to tighten immigration laws. ZEKE MILLER (AP)

If there’s one member of President Trump’s Cabinet who is most embattled right now, it might be Kirstjen Nielsen. And the Department of Homeland Security secretary seems willing to say just about anything to get back on the president’s good side. Behind the scenes, Nielsen is reportedly fighting Trump’s decision to separate migrant children from parents who cross the U.S. border. But on Sunday night, she took to Twitter to offer some remarkable spin by arguing that no such policy exists. “We do not have a policy of separating families at the border,” she said. “Period.” While no specific policy says children must be taken from their families, the Trump administration has decided to interpret the law to put those who cross the border illegally in jail regardless of whether they bring children — and children cannot be put in jail. The inescapable upshot of that is that the children must be separated from their families in a way they weren’t in the past two administrations. In a speech Monday, Nielsen said of claims the administration is being “unhumanitarian”: “We are doing none of those things. We are enforcing the laws passed by Congress.” Other members of the Trump administration have acknowledged the policy shift, which makes Nielsen’s contention rather strange. AARON BLAKE

SCOTUS OKs activist’s suit claiming retaliatory arrest

Interior minister seeking ‘registry’ of minority group

The FBI is determined not to repeat mistakes identified in a harshly critical watchdog report on the handling of the Hillary Clinton email probe, Director Chris Wray said Monday at a congressional hearing. Wray said the FBI accepted the findings of the Office of the Inspector General and has begun making changes, including to how it handles sensitive investigations. The FBI is also reinforcing through employee training the need to avoid the appearance of political bias, a key point of criticism in the report, and has referred employees singled out in the report for possible discipline. (AP)

The Supreme Court on Monday gave a civic activist in Florida another shot at proving that his arrest at a city council meeting was in retaliation for his criticism of public officials. The court said it was ruling narrowly for Fane Lozman, whose battles with the Riviera Beach City Council are legendary. It said a lower court had been wrong to stop his retaliation lawsuit. Justice Anthony M. Kennedy said a citizen’s ability to criticize government without fear of retribution ranks “high in the hierarchy of First Amendment values.” The vote was 8 to 1, with Justice Clarence Thomas dissenting.

Italy’s hard-line interior minister is taking aim at Italy’s minority Roma community. Interior Minister Matteo Salvini told a Lombardy television station Monday that he wants to conduct a census or “registry” of Roma in Italy. Salvini, the leader of Italy’s right-wing League party, insisted later the project’s purpose wasn’t to identify individuals. “I’ve asked the ministry to prepare a dossier on the Roma question in Italy,” he said, adding that the current situation of Roma, also known as Gypsies, was “chaos” several years after a crackdown. Salvini’s remarks sparked immediate denunciations. (AP)

IAAF DISPUTE

Coach Barry Trotz didn’t get a new contract before last season, leaving him in limbo.

Trotz quits Capitals After Stanley Cup win, coach made contract demands team wasn’t willing to meet NHL Barry Trotz resigned from his job as coach of the Capitals on Monday, less than two weeks after Washington won its first Stanley Cup in franchise history. This marks just the fifth time in the past 40 years that a coach did not return to his team the season after winning the NHL championship. Trotz’s resignation ends a strange year-long saga between the Capitals and their coach. Trotz, the fifth-winningest NHL coach of all time, didn’t receive an extension before the start of last season, the final year of a four-year deal. Lacking security despite compiling the league’s best regular-season record each of the two previous seasons, he spent the year in limbo and was nearly fired twice mid-season. Winning the Stanley Cup, however, triggered a clause in Trotz’s contract that gave him an automatic two-year extension, Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said Monday. The extension included a modest

raise on what salary-tracking site capfriendly.com lists as a $1.5 million annual salary. Incentives pushed that figure over $2 million. That still left Trotz far from the ranks of the league’s highest-paid coaches. Compared to other Stanley Cup winners, he would have been underpaid. MacLellan said in a news conference Monday that Trotz’s agent wanted a deal suitable for a “top-four or -five coach.” MacLellan said that a five-year term for Trotz was a “sticking point” because that would have kept him with the Caps for nine seasons, and “not many coaches … have that lasting ability.” Canadiens Coach Claude Julien signed a five-year, $25 million contract in the middle of last season — and Trotz was believed to have been asking for a similar deal, which would’ve meant more than doubling his salary. Toronto’s Mike Babcock is the highest-paid coach, with a $6.25 million annual salary. Chicago’s Joel Quenneville, who has won three championships, signed

Reirden an early favorite Associate head coach Todd Reirden is a favorite to become the Capitals’ next head coach, although he will have to go through an interview process. Washington refused to let Reirden interview with other teams for head coaching jobs last summer, and there was a sense that he was the coach-in-waiting if the team decided to fire Barry Trotz. I.K.

a reported three-year, $18 million extension in 2016. After Trotz won the Stanley Cup, MacLellan said that if Trotz wanted to be back, he would be back. Ultimately, the financial differences led to his resignation. “Sports is a business,” MacLellan said. “You want it to work

out. You want it to be a game. You want it to be all fun. But 10 days after you win a Cup, we have to come here and do this. It’s not fun.” The last time a team did not retain its head coach after winning a championship was 2002, when Scotty Bowman retired after winning the Stanley Cup with Detroit. Bowman previously left Montreal in 1979 to become coach and general manager of the Buffalo Sabres. In 1994, Mike ke Keenan won the Stanley Cup with th the Rangers and then announced ed a month later he was a free agent nt because of a breach in contract ct by New York. Bob Johnson of the he Penguins died of brain cancer er in 1991 after winning the title.. Trotz is believed to be interrested in coaching next season, n, and the only current vacancy y is with the New York Islandders, a divisional opponent. Track champ fights rule on testosterone South African runner Caster Semenya, the two-time Olympic gold medalist in the women’s 800 meters, was set to issue a legal challenge Monday in the Court of Arbitration for Sport against regulations that could exclude women with high natural testosterone levels from middle-distance races. Semenya, 27, is the highest-profile athlete expected to be affected by the rules that divide medical opinion. Track’s governing body, the IAAF, introduced the rules in April. Starting Nov. 1, the IAAF intends to limit entry to all international events from 400 meters through the mile. Women with elevated testosterone would have to reduce their level by using hormonal contraceptives. p (AP)

MEN’S BASKETBALL For one last time, they were all in the same gym together. Center Bruno Fernando was on the court, muscling his way into the paint for rebounds and swinging from the rim after a thunderous dunk. Guard Kevin Huerter and coach Mark Turgeon were

sitting side by side in the stands. Together, they formed the nucleus of Maryland’s basketball program, if only for another week. This was the last day of the NBA draft combine in Chicago in May, an event that — more than any game or workout — has shaped Maryland’s roster for next season. “If Kevin and I return, we could be one of the best teams in the Big Ten,” Fernando said then. But Huerter, a projected firstround pick, stayed in the draft.

Center Bruno Fernando, left, won’t play alongside Kevin Huerter this year.

Fernando stayed in school. That left Maryland with a frontcourt anchor in Fernando, but without the leadership, length and perimeter scoring Huerter had provided for two years.

the international stage the predatory instinct in front of goal that has served Tottenham so well. Only two years ago, the striker failed to find the net at the 2016 European Championship, which ended in humiliation with a loss to Iceland in the last 16. Southgate has transformed the team since then. “It shows the work we have put in these last few weeks,” Walker said. “Togetherness and believing in ourselves.” At the last World Cup, England

didn’t win a game. Low expectations for this year’s overhauled team were dispelled early in Russia when Kane reacted quickly to score after John Stones’ header was saved. But England struggled to finish it off. Despite being trampled to the ground twice and not receiving a call either time, Kane remained patient and delivered in the first minute of stoppage time. “You go until the last second,” he said, “and I’m absolutely buzzing.” ROB HARRIS (AP)

The only black coach at this year’s World Cup said Monday that soccer needs more faces like his. “In European countries, in major clubs, you see lots of African players. Now we need African coaches for our continent to go ahead,” Senegal’s Aliou Cisse said. According to the Sports People’s Think Tank, there were just three minority managers among the 92 English clubs as of Sept. 1. This is a rematch of Colombia’s 4-1 victory over Japan in the final game of group play in the last World Cup, and both rosters contain some of the same players. James Rodriguez, the top scorer in 2014 (six goals in five matches), is questionable to play for Colombia because of a calf injury.

Russia dismissed Saudi Arabia 5-0 in its opener, but the lopsided victory failed to show how good the host team can be. Egypt is coming off a 1-0 loss to Uruguay. Superstar striker Mohamed Salah, who is still nursing a shoulder injury, didn’t play then but has been deemed “fit” for today. (AP)

It was relief for Kane and Gareth Southgate, who leapt into the air in delight to cap off his World Cup coaching debut. “The best teams in the world keep that belief in what they’re doing,” Southgate said, “and in the end they break the opposition down.” England shouldn’t have found it so tough in its Group G opener. Not after Kane scored early with an 11th-minute tap-in. But right back Kyle Walker committed a soft penalty that Ferjani Sassi converted for an equalizer in the 35th. All about that bass EXERCISE Depending on whom you follow on Instagram, you may have noticed an uptick in photos featuring a certain element of the female anatomy, often accompanied by a peach emoji, the new universal symbol for the derrière. Almost a quarter-century after “Buns of Steel” made its VHS debut, the obsession with having firm, toned glutes is back. Classes such as Best Butt Ever and Gluteus Maxout pepper the schedules of gyms, while concept studios targeted toward building the behind spread across the country, including Booty Barre in Seattle and Booty Works in Los Angeles. therapist turned trainer whose workout concept P.volve focuses on shaping the butt, has a similar assessment. “It’s not about being skinny right now,” he says. “People want that athletic, strong, lean look.” Building a firm behind comes with muscular benefits. “The butt and the hips are the drivers of everything you do, whether you are an athlete or not,” Pasterino says. “Without a strong butt, the chances of getting hurt are sky-high — it supports your back, it supports your hips, it drives you through motion and accelerates motion, it helps to prevent injuries in the knees, even in the shoulders.” But it isn’t done with just squats, lunges and dead lifts. Donlan says for most people, their glutes don’t always activate. To really activate them and avoid compensating with other muscles, Donlan recommends using a resistance band, which “instantly forces your body to switch on your medial glutes, the biggest part of your butt. If you make sure your glutes are firing before you lift … that will help work that muscle more.” Donlan offers these examples as glute-activating exercises: First, put a band around your ankles and do 20 sidesteps to one side, then 20 to the other. After that, move the band above your knees, get into a wide-legged stance, and squat it out. Then, do some single-leg dead lifts: Put the band under one foot, hold it with the hand on the same side, then bend and straighten. ELIZABETH KIEFER (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Toned glutes come with major muscular benefits. Here’s how to get them.

People often assume runners face higher risk for arthritis of the hip and knees, but research has generally failed to find any connection. A new study, published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, found veteran marathoners were half as likely to have arthritis as nonrunners. Researchers at Philadelphia’s Thomas Jefferson University compared arthritis rates between 430 marathoners and a matched sample of nonrunners in the National Center for Health Statistics database. The runners (average age 46) had been running for an average of 19 years, logging 35 miles a week, and finishing 48 marathons. Their arthritis prevalence was 8.8 percent, versus 17.9 percent for nonrunners. Researchers think runners may gain arthritis protection from muscle development, weight control and bone strengthening. How do I get away from a bad fiance? Q. I have been wanting to leave my fiance for a year now. At least once a month, he blows up about something and turns against me. My daughter says he is controlling, and that he was bad-mouthing me when I was in the hospital. When I got home he had a hissy fit and left overnight; unfortunately, he came back. He’s very manipulative and holds things over me. How do I collect my belongings and get away from him without him causing a huge fight and maybe a dangerous situation? STUCK

It might upset her further no matter what — since she’s easily prone to getting upset, which is the issue itself! But the more you can reframe this as your wanting to help her feel better for her sake, rather than needing to change her to live up to a certain standard, the better she will feel about it. And if she gets upset, at least it will be because she finally is facing the realities of the toll her anxiety is taking on her, rather than the idea that she is somehow falling short. There could be a physiological piece to this as well; it might be useful to start with a full checkup, and medication may be helpful. But ultimately, cognitive behavioral therapy is likely the answer.

Dr. Andrea Bonior, who has been helping readers with her Baggage Check column since 2005, will host her next weekly live chat at 1 p.m. today. Submit questions at wapo.st/livechat06-19; your queries may be answered during the chat. (EXPRESS)

She is tearful a lot about her job, and she constantly worries about things that are unlikely to happen. She doesn’t sleep well and is always upset about something. Rapper XXXTentacion fatally shot in Florida

Comedian Aparna Nancherla poses for a photo before a comedy club employee inevitably yells at her for sitting on the counter instead of a chair.

show “Corporate.” Increasingly, her mental health struggles became a recurring theme in her comedy. In her recently released half-hour special — part of Netflix’s “The Standups” — Aparna talks about what it’s like to have anxiety in

2018. While discussing depression can be helpful, she can’t say the same for her chosen profession. “The ideal you’re going for seems not necessarily healthy,” she says. “In stand-up, it’s like you’re only as good as your last set. It feels like such an arbitrary thing to pin your worth on.” But to Bhavana, comedy has allowed her to know more of her shy younger sister than she ever had before. “It was there all along,” Bhavana says. “All she did was find a way to make us able to see her full self better.” ELLEN M C CARTHY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Rapper XXXTentacion died Monday after being shot in Deerfield Beach, Fla., police confirmed. XXXTentacion was shopping for a motorcycle when he was shot after being approached by a gunman, who was wearing a red mask, and another man, according to TMZ. The 20-year-old rapper was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said on Twitter. (EXPRESS)

COMEDY Aparna Nancherla used to walk onstage, grab the microphone and greet her audiences this way: “It’s okay, guys — I’m surprised I’m a comedian, too!” As far as the audience knew, it was a stereotype joke, a reflection on the dearth of demure-looking South Asian women wearing barrettes and print dresses in the current comedy landscape. But to her parents, that line is an essential truth. And it’s the core of their daughter’s triumph. If you had told Ananth Nancherla that his painfully shy second daughter would make a living performing hilarious 30-minute monologues in front of hundreds of people, that she would star in her own television specials and have nearly half a million online followers, he would have said, “Keep dreaming.” Yet Aparna’s inaugural standup set — performed at Tysons Corner on her 20th birthday — went surprisingly well. Her older sister, Bhavana Nancherla, came along for that comedy debut. It seemed like a quirky thing to

try, but Aparna had always broken her long stretches of silence with brief outbursts of silliness. To Bhavana, Aparna was like “one of those flowers that only bloom for five minutes a day.” In 2010, after four years of open-mic sets in D.C., Aparna set off for Los Angeles with a boyfriend. There she found an administrative job, a manager and a growing reputation for her subtle, offbeat humor. Then she got a call to come to New York to write for the FX show “Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell.” When that show ended in late 2013, she supported herself doing stand-up until she was hired to write for NBC’s “Late Night With Seth Meyers.” The gig writing for Meyers’ voice was prestigious, but not a perfect fit. “I just have a hard time not writing weird — to my own sensibility,” says Aparna, now 36. But as Aparna left the show in the spring of 2016, it felt to her “like the universe held out a net.” Her stand-up bookings increased. She put out a debut comedy album. She was cast in Aziz Ansari’s Netflix show “Master of None.” She was hired to voice a recurring character on Netflix’s animated comedy “BoJack Horseman” and won a role on the Comedy Central
