A beluga whale seems to offer a happy greeting to amused visitors Sunday at the Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Conn. The beluga is a relatively small whale and looks more animated than some whales because it has a flexible neck that lets it turn its head freely.

In some ways, this newborn showed great timing Sunday. It’s nice that it was Father’s Day, but there was potential danger when his mom went into labor prematurely on a flight from Saudi Arabia to Kochi, India. Jet Airways diverted the flight to Mumbai when the emergency occurred, but the woman gave birth to a healthy boy while still in the air. CNN reported that the infant got a nice gift from the Indian airline: free flights for life. (EXPRESS)

Adam Pearl said Joey climbed onto his shoulder to say goodbye recently, then scampered up a backyard apple tree and hasn’t been seen since. Pearl raised Joey after he fell from his nest last year. Joey made headlines this winter when police nabbed a burglary suspect who said he fled a home after a squirrel attacked him. (AP)

Their older son, Saket, 17, is a rising senior at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Alexandria. Himal, 15, who will attend Briar Woods High School in the fall, was diagnosed with profound autism when he was 2. As Himal’s parents came to terms with his diagnosis, they worried about his future. “Since he was 6 or 7, we have been trying to see if he has any strengths we can liberate so he can build on that, so he can do those things in life,” Harish said. Identifying his strengths was a challenge, partly because Himal did not speak, instead relying on nonverbal communication and sign language. About six years ago, Sandhya, who paints as a hobby, was working on a painting when Himal grabbed the brush from her

His parents encouraged him to paint more. “We started training him and, lo and behold, he surprised us,” Harish said. “Because a person who couldn’t hold a fork properly was able to paint.” And paint he did, one piece after another — vividly colored landscapes, nature scenes and depictions of animals. About 1,500 greeting cards featuring Himal’s art sold out in less than two hours, Harish said. “We were surprised at how many people expressed how much they loved it,” he said. Seeing that there was a market for art created by people with autism was an awakening for the Bikmals. Last year, the family launched a business, Zenaviv, to market the artwork of young people with disabilities. The company sells wall art, as well as products featuring designs created by Himal and several other artists with autism. Zenaviv markets the products mostly to businesses that give them to clients, customers and employees. The company is working with a half-dozen artists from Northern Virginia, Harish said, with plans to add more. The main purpose of Zenaviv, Harish said, is to help people with disabilities generate income while doing something they love. “The best thing that has happened is [that] it’s provided some hope for us,” he said. The pool’s 7 million gallons were drained earlier this month. About 80 ducklings had died there recently, and officials from the National Park Service had said they believed it was because of a parasite in snails that lived in the water. FAIRFAX The killing of a Muslim teenager in Virginia is being investigated as a road rage incident, Fairfax County Police said Monday. Police say the suspect, Darwin Martinez Torres, was driving while a group that included Nabra Hassanen was walking and riding bikes in and along the road. “Our investigation at this point in no way indicates the victim was targeted because of her race or religion,” police said in a statement. On Sunday, police found the girl’s remains after the All Dulles Area Muslim Society, a local mosque, reported her missing. Relatives identified the girl as Nabra Hassanen of Reston. Prosecutors said she was 16. Torres, 22, has been charged with murder in the case. She also said detectives told her that Nabra was struck with a metal bat. Gazzar believes that her daughter’s death was a hate crime. “I’m sure the guy hit my daughter because she’s Muslim and she was wearing the hijab,” she said. “The thing in my head is, why did he do that to us? We’re not bad people. He doesn’t know us. Why did he ever do that? I don’t feel safe at all anymore, as a Muslim living here now. Md. lawmakers have a plan to remake Metro TRANSPORTATION Ten Maryland legislators are proposing a radical overhaul of Metro’s board and a flexible, equitably shared funding plan that would yield the $500 million in dedicated funding proposed by Metro General Manager Paul J. Wiedefeld. The 29-page plan represents the most detailed and comprehensive proposal so far by lawmakers in any of the jurisdictions Metro serves. The lawmakers call for significant governance and oversight changes, and separate, $170 million annual payments from Maryland, Virginia and the District to support Metro’s longterm needs. The funds would be put into a new “capital trust fund” that would substantially increase Metro’s long-term borrowing abilities. The proposal does not lay out a specific funding mechanism, leaving it to each jurisdiction to determine how to come up with its share — an acknowledgment of the significant disagreements over how to support the system’s financial needs. The plan calls for a new board with only the Maryland and Virginia transportation secretaries and the District’s director of transportation. Motions would pass with two votes and there would be no jurisdictional veto. Officials in Maryland consider the document a road map for potential legislation. local COURTS The Supreme Court on Monday struck down part of a law that bans offensive trademarks, ruling in favor of an Asian-American rock band called the Slants and giving a major boost to the Washington Redskins in their separate legal fight over the team name. The justices were unanimous in saying that the 71-year-old trademark law barring disparaging terms infringes free speech rights guaranteed in the Constitution’s First Amendment. “Speech may not be banned on

the ground that it expresses ideas that offend,” Justice Samuel Alito said in his opinion for the court. Slants founder Simon Tam tried to trademark the band name in 2011, but the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office denied the request on the grounds that it disparages Asians. A federal appeals court in Washington later said the law barring offensive trademarks is unconstitutional, and the Supreme Court agreed. The Redskins made similar arguments after the trademark office canceled the team’s trademark in 2014. That case had been

Van attack on Muslims suggests deeper divide LONDON The rash of deadly terrorism attacks that has rattled Britain in recent months took an ominous turn Monday as Muslim worshippers became targets during the holy month of Ramadan, mowed down by an attacker who plowed a van into a crowd leaving prayers at two mosques in north London. It was the same tactic Islamic extremists used in recent assaults on Westminster Bridge and London Bridge. Those attacks and a third outside a pop concert in Manchester have triggered a surge in hate crimes against Muslims around Britain. British authorities, including Prime Minister Theresa May, and Islamic leaders moved swiftly to ease concerns in the Muslim community following the attack. It occurred shortly after midnight and injured at least nine people in London’s Finsbury Park neighborhood, home to a large Muslim population. Authorities said the incident was being treated as a terrorist attack. One man died at the scene, although he was receiving first aid at the time and it wasn’t clear if he died as a result of the attack or from something else. British media identified the suspect as Darren Osborne, a 47-year-old Briton and father

of four living in Cardiff, Wales, who was not known to authorities before the attack. Details about the assailant were sketchy, but the assault — the most dramatic against Muslims in London in recent years — suggested a new, dangerous level of polarization in British society. “This was an attack on Muslims near their place of worship,” May said. “And like all terrorism, in whatever form, it shares the same fundamental goal. It seeks to drive us apart.” Mayor Sadiq Khan, London’s first Muslim mayor, also urged residents to stand together: “We will not allow these terrorists to succeed. ... We will stay a strong city.” May said police would assess security at mosques and provide

any additional resources needed ahead of upcoming celebrations marking the end of Ramadan. The Metropolitan Police Service said it was putting extra patrols on the streets to protect the public. The attack occurred at about 12:20 a.m. when a speeding white van swerved into worshippers emerging from prayers outside the Muslim Welfare House and nearby Finsbury Park Mosque. People surrounded the driver and witnesses said the crowd began attacking him. A local imam said he and others shielded the man until police could take him away. The driver was arrested on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism, including murder and attempted murder. DANICA KIRKA, PAISLEY DODDS

Russia rebukes U.S. over downing of jet

Moscow warns it will target coalition planes operating over Syria JAKE CANNADY (U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE)

SYRIA Russia on Monday condemned the downing of a Syrian aircraft by a U.S. fighter as a “flagrant violation of international law,” and said its forces will treat U.S.led coalition aircraft and drones as targets if they are operating in Syrian airspace west of the Euphrates while Russian aviation is on combat missions. The Russian Defense Ministry also said it is suspending an agreement to minimize the risk of in-flight incidents between Russian and U.S.-led coalition aircraft operating over Syria. Russia, which has given military support to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad since 2015, was reacting to U.S. military confirmation that its F-18 Super Hornet shot down a Syrian fighterbomber Sunday. The Syrian jet had just dropped bombs near members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a militia aligned with the U.S. in the campaign against the Islamic State. In a statement Monday, the SDF warned that it would retaliate in the face of further aggression from pro-Assad forces,

raising the possibility that the United States could be forced to deviate further from its stated policy in Syria, which only involves targeting ISIS militants. On Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry said its warplanes had been operating in the area of the encounter between the U.S. and Syrian jets. The ministry said the coalition had not used the deconflicting hotline to warn Russian forces. “Multiple military actions of U.S. aviation under the guise of fighting terrorism against the legal military of a state that is a member of the United Nations are a flagrant violation of international law and

constitute de facto military aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic,” the ministry said. It was the first time the U.S. has shot down a Syrian fighter during the six-year conflict. The incident followed a series of U.S. strikes against Iran-backed forces advancing on partner forces in a strategically prized swath of land on the Iraqi border. Outside observers said Sunday’s strike underscored a growing willingness on the part of Assad’s forces to confront the U.S.-led coalition as it attempts to roll back ISIS militants from eastern Syria. Justices take on electoral maps Supreme Court will hear case on partisan gerrymandering COURTS The Supreme Court announced Monday that it will consider whether gerrymandered election maps favoring one political party over another violate the Constitution, a potentially fundamental change in the way American elections are conducted. The justices regularly are called to invalidate state electoral maps that have been illegally drawn to reduce the influence of racial minorities by depressing the impact of their votes.

But the Supreme Court has never found a plan unconstitutional because of partisan gerrymandering. If it does, it would have a revolutionary impact on the reapportionment that comes after the 2020 election and could come at the expense of Republicans, who control the process in the majority of states. The court accepted a case from Wisconsin, where a divided panel of three federal judges ruled last year that the state’s Republican leadership in 2011 pushed through a plan so partisan that it violated the Constitution’s First Amendment and equal rights protections. The issue will be briefed and

argued in the Supreme Court term that begins in October. The justices gave themselves a bit of an out: They said they will further consider their jurisdiction over the case when it is heard on its merits. And they gave an indication of how divisive the issue might be: After granting the case, the court voted 5 to 4 to stay the lower court’s decision, which had required new districts be drawn this fall. Wisconsin had argued that would create unnecessary work should the Supreme Court ultimately overturn the lower court’s decision. The court’s action comes at a time when the relatively obscure

subject of reapportionment has taken on new significance, with many blaming the drawing of safely partisan seats for a polarized and gridlocked Congress. Barack Obama has said that one of his post-presidency projects will be to combat partisan gerrymanders after the 2020 Census. The Constitution requires states to redo their maps to reflect population changes identified in the once-a-decade census. Both parties draw congressional and legislative districts to their own advantage. But Republicans have more to lose because they control so many more state legislatures.

U.K. formally opens Brexit negotiations in Brussels with other EU nations

A new study of DNA from the bones and teeth of more than 200 ancient cats sharpens the picture about when and how wild cats — solitary, reclusive and very ill-tempered — began to pad their way into our homes. Researchers found that cats’ dispersal happened in two waves, first from the Fertile Crescent and later from Egypt. Their migration likely included travel on Viking and other ships. As shown in previous research, modern-day cats trace their roots to one subspecies of wild cat, Felis silvestris lybica, that is native to northern Africa and southwest Asia. “To get the real picture, we have to go back to the ancient remains and analyze those,” said author Eva-Maria Geigl, an evolutionary geneticist at the Institut Jacques Monod in Paris. The team analyzed mitochondrial DNA from remains spanning 9,000 years. The researchers, whose paper was published in Nature Ecology & Evolution, also looked at cats’ coats. Only domestic tabbies have blotchy fur coats, which are caused by one gene mutation. They found it first showed up in the Middle Ages, suggesting that domestication as we know it — with some form of selective breeding — did not start until then. This fairly late date provides yet more evidence that the taming of the cat was by no means a quick process. KARIN BRULLIARD

Killer heat on the rise Western U.S. swelters as study predicts days with deadly conditions will be more frequent

Turbat, Pakistan, climbed to about 128 degrees; if confirmed, that could be among the five hottest temperatures reliably measured on Earth, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of Weather Underground. “This is already bad. We already know it,” Mora said. “The empirical data suggest it’s getting much worse.” He and colleagues created an interactive global map with past heat waves and computer simulations to determine how much more frequent they will become under different carbon dioxide pollution scenarios. The map shows that under current pollution projections, the entire eastern U.S. will have a significant number of killer heat days. Even higher numbers are predicted for the Southeast U.S., much of Central and South America, central Africa, India, Pakistan, and much of Asia and Australia. Mora and outside climate scientists said the study and map

underestimate past heat waves in poorer hot areas where record keeping is weak. It’s more accurate when it comes to developed areas like the U.S. and Europe. If pollution continues as it has, Mora said, by the end of the century the southern U.S. will have entire summers of what he called lethal heat conditions. A hotter world doesn’t necessarily mean more deaths in all locales, Mora said. That’s because

he found over time the same blistering conditions killed fewer people than in the past, mostly because of air conditioning and governments doing a better job keeping people from dying in the heat. So while heat kills and temperatures are rising, people are adapting, though mostly in countries that can afford it. And those that can’t afford it are likely to get worse heat in the future. “This work confirms the alarming projections of increasing hot days over coming decades — hot enough to threaten lives on a very large scale,” said Howard Frumkin, a University of Washington environmental health professor who wasn’t part of the study. Mora documented more than 100,000 deaths since 1980, but said there are likely far more because of areas that didn’t have good data. Not all of them were caused by man-made climate change. Just one heat wave — in Europe in 2003 — killed more than 70,000 people. SETH BORENSTEIN (AP)

The temperature at Death Valley National Park hit 124 degrees Sunday, and some tourists welcomed the current heat wave as a bucketlist opportunity to visit the hottest place in America. As temperatures soar in July and August, business booms at Panamint Springs Resort, near the entrance to the park. “When it’s 120 to 125 [degrees], there’s more customers than there ever is,” said Mike Orozco, who works at the resort. He said locals jokingly refer to the summer spike as “European season,” when a flood of tourists arrive in Death Valley to experience heat unheard of in Europe. (AP)

WEATHER Killer heat is getting worse, a new study shows. Deadly heat waves like the one now broiling the American West are bigger killers than previously thought and they are going to grow more frequent, according to a new comprehensive study of fatal heat conditions. Still, those stretches may be less lethal in the future, as people become accustomed to them. A team of researchers examined 1,949 deadly heat waves from around the world since 1980 to look for trends, define when heat is so severe it kills and forecast the future. They found that nearly one in three people now experience 20 days a year when the heat reaches deadly levels. But the study predicts that up to three in four people worldwide will endure that kind of heat by the end of the century if global warming continues unabated. “The United States is going to be an oven,” said Camilo Mora of the University of Hawaii, lead author of a study published Monday in the journal Nature Climate Change. The study comes as much of the U.S. swelters through extended triple-digit heat. In California, temperatures hit records Sunday of 106°, 105° and 103° in Santa Rosa, Livermore and San Jose as a heat wave was forecast through midweek. On Monday, American Airlines cancelled 38 flights in and out of Phoenix scheduled for this afternoon. Extreme heat creates changes in air density that makes it harder for airplanes to take off, and the forecast called for a high of 119°. In late May, temperatures in

CINCINNATI Otto Warmbier, a University of Virginia student who was released by North Korea in a coma last week, died Monday afternoon. He was 22. The family announced his death in a statement released by UC Health Systems, saying, “It is our sad duty to report that our son, Otto Warmbier, has completed his journey home. Surrounded by his loving family, Otto died today at 2:20 p.m.” The family thanked the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for treating him but said, “Unfortunately, the awful torturous mistreatment our son received at the hands of the North Koreans ensured that no other outcome was possible beyond the sad one we experienced today.” They said they were choosing to focus on the time they were given with their “warm, engaging, brilliant” son. Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor in North Korea, convicted of subversion after he tearfully confessed he had tried to steal a propaganda banner. He was held for more than 17 months and evacuated for medical reasons from North Korea last week. Doctors said he returned with severe brain damage, but it wasn’t clear what caused it. Parents Fred and Cindy Warmbier said the day of his release that the “pariah” regime brutalized their son. (AP)

The Wizards don’t have a first-round pick in Thursday’s NBA draft, but they can find just what they need at No. 52. Washington’s top six players are solid, so it doesn’t necessarily have to add a big name. The team won’t trade up for projected top picks Markelle Fultz, Lonzo Ball or Josh Jackson anyway. Washington needs to focus on its bench and conserve resources so the team has enough cash to keep restricted free agent Otto Porter Jr. The draft has annually been a crapshoot for the Wizards, so finding a quality player in the second round would be a nice change. Before drafting John Wall (2010), Bradley Beal (2012) and Porter, the team spent nearly three decades missing on almost every pick. It’s the second straight year the Wizards are without a first-rounder. They traded this year’s to Brooklyn for Bojan Bogdanovic, who’s now a

restricted free agent. Washington hasn’t drafted and developed a productive player since Porter in 2013. Even he needed three seasons to become a solid contributor. This year, the Wizards need a player who will allow guard John Wall or forward Markieff Morris to actually rest, so they should target Iowa State point guard Monte Morris, Clemson forward Jaron Blossomgame, Utah forward Kyle Kuzma or Kansas point guard Frank Mason III. All of those players were seasoned through the college basketball system. Washington’s history shows the team should avoid the type of European developmental players who general manager Ernie Grunfeld loves to waste picks on. This team can’t afford another Jan Vesely — who lasted three season in the NBA — or Tomas Satoransky, who never found a consistent role last season. Monte Morris would be a steal at No. 52 and could give Wall a chance to ease up on

that pesky knee. The Iowa State guard is an excellent passer and solid shooter. If he’s gone, then Washington might be able to take Mason, the 2017 national college player of the year. If Mason (5-feet-11) were a few inches taller, he’d be a mid-first rounder. The frontcourt needs help, too, especially with Marcin Gortat turning 34 next season after averaging just 8.1 points per game in the playoffs. A lack of backup forwards was a problem last season, and Blossomgame or Kuzma could help. Blossomgame can play either

forward position and is strong underneath and defensively. Maybe his outside shooting needs work, but he can be a scrapper Washington needs. Kuzma is a solid all-around player who needs to fill out. Both Philadelphia and Boston are primed for drafts that will help them surpass Washington as Cleveland’s top challenger. The only way the Wizards can improve is finding a gem at No. 52.

He averaged 10.1 points as a rookie for the Bullets before he was traded to the Trail Blazers for Rod Strickland and Harvey Grant.

George sets up NBA dominoes NBA On Sunday afternoon, the worst-kept secret in the NBA was broadcast to the masses: Pacers star Paul George, one of the league’s best two-way players, plans to play out the final year of his contract and enter free agency in 2018 — with the intent to return to his native Southern California and play for the Lakers. George’s plan sets up the dominoes that will impact everything in free agency this summer. And it’s made George the grand prize over the coming months. Cleveland also has the best present-day asset any team is going to give up to get George in Kevin Love, who would fit well next to young center Myles Turner in Indiana’s frontcourt. The Celtics, who have eight first-round picks in the next three drafts after making a deal with Philadelphia, should also be in the mix. Expect the Lakers to get in on the action, too. It’s hard to see L.A. giving up the No. 2 pick in this year’s draft, but it’s still unclear exactly how the Lakers will operate under the new stewardship of Magic Johnson and general manager Rob Pelinka.

Yoga instructors Irene Pappas, left, and Ahmed Jabali-Nash share tips for new yogis.

STUDIES SHOW ...

First-timers’ Yoga 101

SPENCER BENTLEY AND MARY MBABA

Sure you want fries?

So you’ve summoned the courage to try yoga — congrats! — but you aren’t quite sure what to bring to, or what to expect from, your first class. Don’t fret. We spoke with two yoga instructors, Irene Pappas (@FitQueenIrene on Instagram) and Ahmed Jabali-Nash (@yogiman_83), and got their tips to help you survive and thrive in your first session. MEGAN MCDONOUGH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Do your research

Keep an open mind

Come early

Dress the part

Be patient

A Google or Yelp search can help you identify a yoga style, studio and teacher that best fit your fitness regimen and goals. Teacher and instructor bios online can also be helpful. “For beginners, I’d recommend finding something that is touted as a beginner’s yoga class or a hatha-style class that moves at a slower pace,” Pappas advises.

Showing up for your first class can be intimidating, and that’s OK. Try to channel your nerves into enthusiasm and stay openminded. Avoid having “built-up” expectations of either your body or the class, Pappas suggests. “The most important thing is [to] get in the room and … show up for the experience,” she adds.

For your first visit, the studio will probably ask you to set up an account and fill out a waiver, so plan to arrive 15 minutes before class. If you want extra assistance or have a pre-existing injury, or if you would prefer to skip hands-on body adjustments, let your instructor know before class to avoid any discomfort, Jabali-Nash says.

Opt for clothing that makes you feel confident and comfortable. “You can be sitting inside a posture for five, seven, 10 minutes, so you want something that’s flexible. You don’t want something that will chafe,” Jabali-Nash says. Try sweatabsorbing microfiber, or yoga shorts or leggings. Be wary of sheer leggings and super-short or -loose shorts.

Attempting a new workout can be confusing and frustrating. “It takes so much practice to be able to do these things,” Pappas says. Remember that getting comfortable with the poses is a process. “It may seem painful, but it’s just the feeling of discomfort from trying something new and different,” Jabali-Nash adds.

Let go of self-judgment

Don’t be afraid of falling

Bring the essentials

Stay for savasana

Come back again

Although envy is very un-yogi-like, it happens, and it’s normal to feel that way during your first class. But Jabali-Nash encourages students to feel inspired, rather than intimidated, by their peers. “At the end of the day, you’re here for yourself and your growth,” he says.

There is a high likelihood that you’ll fall down during your first class. That’s normal. “Like a baby bird coming out of its nest, you’re not going to fly your first time,” Jabali-Nash says. Take a deep breath, get back up and follow the teacher’s lead to get back into position.

Jabali-Nash advises newbies to pack a mat (if one is not provided by the studio), a towel, deodorant, water and a change of clothes. Avoid lotion and makeup and try to stay hydrated before and after class to avoid achy muscles. Most of all, bring a positive attitude and an open mind.

Savasana, also known as the corpse pose, is a relaxing position saved until the end of class. It is considered one of the most important and postures in the practice. Although it’s tempting to get up, use the pose as an opportunity to rest your body and mind. “Start to train the mind to rest,” Pappas says.

Was the first class not your ur scene? Try a different stylee of yoga before calling it quits. Jabali-Nash tried Bikram yoga for his first class but found a home with Rocket yoga two years rs later. “We’re all constantlyy learning, and that’s the beautiful part about it,” Jabali-Nash says. “It’s a journey.”

French fries are out to get you. That’s the apparent takeaway of a study published this month by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It analyzed the potato consumption of 4,440 American participants, aged 45 to 79 years, over an eight-year period. Researchers used questionnaires to determine each person’s spud-eating habits and then used the data to trace links between potato consumption and mortality. Exactly 236 people died during the course of the study. The researchers concluded that people who ate “fried potatoes” two or more times a week more than doubled their risk of premature death. But experts noted that this is just an association — someone who eats a lot of fried potatoes might have other unhealthy practices. Moreover, the study didn’t monitor factors like obesity and physical activity. TIM CARMAN (TWP)

I don’t want him at the memorial Q. My mother passed away last year and we are having a memorial gathering for her on her upcoming birthday. She was married for seven years to a man whom I considered my stepfather as a child, but when they divorced, he maintained no relationship with us. It took years for me to get over it. My sister found him and invited him. She says it’s the “right thing to do,” but I want to tell him not to come. HE’S BACK AFTER TOO LONG I’m not sure de-inviting him is the answer. First, there’s a chance he might attend anyway, and second — echoing your sister — it can be argued he is entitled a chance to mourn your mother too, much as his behavior seems undeserving of it. What he doesn’t have the right to do is intrude upon your experience. So decide on what your terms are. Your sister

could give him a heads-up about what you’d prefer — that he not approach you, that you don’t want him near the family area, that he duck out before a more intimate part of the gathering. Perhaps a friend can run interference if it comes to that. Of course, if he has a heart, he may understand that the best thing to do is sit this one out, of his own volition.

you because you are too “cynical,” is this something to take seriously? Why would he say this to me? Is this just an excuse because he needed one? Or is it time for me to do some soul-searching? I don’t want him to hurt me twice by dumping me and then making me question myself on top of it. But I also don’t want to ignore it if it could be real. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

This could be something very true about you, something he pulled out of his who-knows-what, or anything in between. But I would argue that, now that the relationship is over, it may not matter either way. Let’s say you are a cynical person. Do you need to change? Is it getting in the way of your life in other ways? Would you even want to change? Anyway, the fact that you’re even open to considering this likely means it’s not a terrible problem. Bottom line: This relationship is over, and only you can decide whether you are the person that you want to be, going forward. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Andrea is a local clinical psychologist and author of “Psychology: Essential Thinkers, Classic Theories, and How They Inform Your World.”

‘GLOW’ wrestles with sexism Netflix’s bold dramedy follows women who try to break the mold ANALYSIS

‘American Idol’ revival already has its issues Since ABC announced its “American Idol” reboot in May, several problems have cropped up that don’t look all that promising for the return of the hit singing competition show. Here’s a brief look. EMILY YAHR (TWP)

Ruth Wilder’s (Alison Brie) typical getup includes spandex and hair spray. Lots of hair spray.

casting director for a lead on any job whatsoever, Rush is steered toward Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a down-on-his-luck film director who has been hired to assemble a team of women wrestlers for a new TV enterprise. Sam is turned off by Ruth’s drama-school seriousness, but she is so desperate for work that she persuades him to keep her around. Sam has ideas about creating a convoluted epic about a planet of lesbians, but his investor, a trust-fund kid named Sebastian “Bash” Howard (Chris Lowell), insists that GLOW will only be successful if it is consistent with male wrestling’s blunt adherence to conflicts between good and evil and the trash talk that

NETFLIX

TV REVIEW The fun and forthright “GLOW,” debuting Friday on Netflix, is a 10-episode dramedy about the nascent days of televised female professional wrestling, in which a group of underemployed actresses, models, party girls and unwitting introverts are recruited by a greaseball B-movie director to try something that’s never been done before. Along the way, they experience the sexist slights and telltale selfdiscoveries that have come to signify the basic shape of TV’s newfound interest in feminism. In “GLOW’s” case, the goal is to master the physically demanding stagecraft of pro wrestling, with some shred of dignity intact. The women who form GLOW — “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling,” a real-life 1980s TV sensation on which this show is loosely based — must endure a series of humiliations and reckon with personal compromises. They must also learn to cooperate. From the wrestling ring, their sisterly empowerment arises. “GLOW” is set in 1985 — the most vintage slice of the Reagan era, which is perfectly depicted in all its “Dynasty” notions of glamour and Jane Fonda workout-tape insistence on self-actualization. It opens with starving actress Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie) at an unsuccessful TV audition. B Begging a

transpires between them. Which is why Sam and Bash assign the women roles based mostly on racist stereotypes. Jenny (Ellen Wong) becomes “Fortune Cookie”; Tamee (Kia Stevens) becomes “The Welfare Queen”; Arthie (Sunita Mani) becomes “Beirut” and dons a kaffiyeh (“He knows I’m not Muslim, right?” she asks). It eventually dawns on the women that these characters have the potential to be dangerously offensive. “GLOW” pulses with all sorts of potential talking points about gender, friendships between women and public perceptions of stereotypes, but rather than bogging itself down in prolonged messaging, it is committed to a

brisk pace and a lightness that reflects its subject matter. In a way, “GLOW” is reminiscent of Penny Marshall’s 1992 film, “A League of Their Own,” which was about the brief glories of a women’s baseball league during World War II. Both are period pieces that capture the prevalence of sexism at different points in American history. Tom Hanks’ famous admonition from that movie — “There’s no crying in baseball!” — morphs into “GLOW’s” notion that, while an arena full of skeptical men are watching, you bring your tears, anger, resentment and anything else you’ve got into that ring with you. It all proves useful. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Tidal’s big ‘4:44’ secret is out Tida

@DOCTORAVENUE, making fun of Lyft for rolling out its new feature, “Lyft Shuttle,” which is basically a bus. The company is advertising the shuttle (available now in San Francisco and Chicago) as a shared ride with a fixed route and fixed prices for commuting hours. Twitter users couldn’t help but make fun of the startup for trying to reinvent public transportation. “What if we took lyft shuttle, and moved it underground, and dug out special tunnels for them to drive around in underground?” @hupperts tweeted.

“Kind of disappointed. Kushner talked about modernizing government technology, but some people were distracted by hearing his voice for the first time. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You’ll be apprised of a new protocol — a new way of doing things that can raise the bar. Are you ready to contribute? CANCER (June 21-July 22) You may have to start over more than once, but when you hit your stride, no one will be able to stop you — or even catch up with you! LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You should be able to reorient yourself before the day is out, getting thoughts and actions more in sync than they’ve been in recent days. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’re in a race against the clock, so you mustn’t let anyone distract you from what you know must be done. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) It’s essential that you tackle the day’s assignments in the right order. Each will inform the next, making things go more smoothly for you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You are being tempted by something that is no more than a memory — one that’s not at all representative of reality. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You are eager to move forward into new territory, but you must be sure that everyone has been given the same information you have.

JAY-Z’s war on nation’s copy editors escalates JAY-Z has once again changed the spelling and stylization of his name. A rep for his label, Roc Nation, told Pitchfork the rapper will go back to hyphenating his name, and in addition will capitalize the entire thing. JAY-Z previously dropped the hyphen in 2013. This latest change seems to be tied to his just-announced next album, the Tidal exclusive “4:44.” (EXPRESS)

Model Karlie Kloss received a standing ovation during her talk at the Cannes Lions festival this week for addressing bodyshaming in the fashion industry. “I was called both too fat and too thin by a casting agent on the same day,” Kloss said, according to the New York Post, adding that she focuses on her health and strength, not her weight. “I don’t want to please anyone myself.” (EXPRESS) but myself.

Miley Cyrus on Saturday slammed Dolce & Gabbana while congratulating her brother Braison, a recent model for the fashion house. “Congrats @braisonccyrus on walking in your 1st runway show,” she wrote on Instagram, adding, “D&G, I STRONGLY disagree with your politics.” Cyrus might have been referring to statements made in 2015 by co-founders Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce against in vitro fertilization, or the brand’s decision to dress Melania Trump for several events. Gabbana responded Sunday on Instagram, writing in both Italian and English, “We don’t need your posts or comments so next time please ignore us!!” (EXPRESS)
