When he does get out, his first move will be filing for divorce A Colorado inmate mistakenly released from jail had less than two hours of freedom before his wife realized the error and made him turn himself in. The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel reported that James Rynerson was at the Mesa County Jail on a $2,000 cash bond. He was released after sheriff’s deputies mistook him for another inmate. Dying rat’s last act is powerful statement on evils of capitalism When technicians arrived June 11 to fix a broken State Bank of India cash machine in the town of Tinsukia, they found a dead rat and Indian currency notes worth nearly 1.3 million rupees, or a little over $19,000, chewed to shreds. The rat had gotten in through a hole for cables, police superintendent Mugdha Jyoti Mahanta said Friday. (AP) COPY EDITOERS WANTED

Soccer unites local Iranians WORLD CUP Iran’s World Cup match against Spain last week was business as usual for Iman Huschmand. On days like this, the party scene is his workplace. As the owner of an entertainment company, Huschmand organizes and hosts hundreds of weddings, private parties and corporate events in the D.C. area. But this gathering of Iranians was important to him personally. Huschmand’s parents fled Iran because his mother was a secretary for the king of Iran before the revolution in the late 1970s, so Huschmand was born in Germany. He lived there for 10 years before moving to the United States. As a teenager, Huschmand developed a love for music through Iranian pop songs. He then started DJing, and his clients were primarily from the local Iranian-American community. He sees entertainment as a way he can help Iranian-Americans stay in touch with their pasts. For Iran’s three group-stage

matches, Huschmand’s company is hosting a viewing party at Tysons Biergarten in exchange for a share of the profits from food and drink sales. Both owners of Tysons Biergarten have ties to Iran: Matt Rofougaran lived in Tehran until he was 3 years old, and Paymon Hadjiesmaeiloo was born in Virginia but is Iranian. The largest crowd so far has been for the Iran-Morocco game on June 15. Iran notched the match’s lone score when Morocco

conceded an own goal during stoppage time. Those few minutes, Huschmand said, were the most memorable of his professional career. And if Iran upsets Portugal today and advances to the round of 16 for the first time, “that would be like heaven,” Huschmand said. Hadjiesmaeiloo hopes the World Cup will bring lasting results well beyond the pitch. He wants the public’s perception of Iranians to be based on individuals, not governments. Nike did not provide cleats to Iran’s national team because of U.S. sanctions against the country. Even though Iran fan Mabood Maghsoudlou said “generally the World Cup has left politics at home,” he pointed out how some fans at the watch party wore clothing that depicts the Iranian flag used during the monarchy, while others wore the slightly different version adopted after the revolution. “There’s a lot of negativity when Iran is brought onto the news, but during the World Cup, it’s just a bunch of guys playi ng soccer,” Hadjies maeiloo said. Activism is on the menu D.C. restaurants bank on poking fun at Trump to draw in customers

expressline

Sanders booted from restaurant for ties to Trump

KATHERINE FREY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS At The Bird in Logan Circle, the managers created a Moscow Mueller drink special. At the Ivy City-based City Winery, there is the “covfefe” wine, echoing a confusing May 2017 tweet from President Trump. D.C. has always been a city attuned to politics, but with the most recent change in administration, some bars and restaurants have drawn in customers by addressing the political turmoil. When the president described Haiti and its immigrants with a disparaging phrase, Brian Hill said it “crushed” him, which is why he began running a sandwich special named after special counsel Robert Mueller to overtly signal support at his downtown Chef Brian’s Comfort Kitchen. Ben Bronstein, The Bird’s assistant general manager, said its drink specials were not born of an anti-Donald Trump sentiment, but were crafted to poke fun at the political culture in D.C. The drink marking the departure of Rex Tillerson was Rex on the Beach, and it was, not surprisingly, the Mooch when Anthony Scaramucci left as communications director after only 11 days on the job, Bronstein said. On the nights The Bird runs the specials, Bronstein said, “business at least triples, if not more.” Marches that draw people to the capital spike profits for restaurants, but they won’t live or die based on a day or weekend bump or even the special deals, said economist Stephen Fuller, director of the Stephen S. Fuller Institute at George Mason University. Although, he said, the catchy specials “may generate an extra layer of business.” For some, these deals are

“crafty marketing,” but they don’t necessarily mean the businesses also don’t believe in the cause they’re supporting, Fuller said. Restaurants have a “heightened awareness” of politics now because it’s “hard to avoid it,” said Michael Curtin, who worked in the hospitality industry before becoming CEO of DC Central Kitchen. And the reach can be long, as demonstrated Friday when a small-town Virginia restaurant 200 miles away from D.C. asked White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders to leave. “A business that is resisting Trump may have a ready clientele” because D.C. is made up of 90 percent Democrats, said Bernard Demczuk, the Ben’s Chili Bowl historian. Ben’s, however, is not among those introducing a political tone to its menu. Supporting activism is familiar for The Potter’s House, an Adams Morgan cafe that has been a meeting space for decades. Yet it’s a “risk” for businesses to be

outspoken about their political views, said Mike Balderrama, the nonprofit’s general manager. Hill, the Chef Brian’s owner, said he felt compelled to take that risk and signal his support for Mueller’s probe after the derision he heard in the president’s comment over his native Haiti. He went to his restaurant the

next day and put up a sign that always has political commentary from Hill on some recent event above a never-changing sign-off of: “all are welcome.” Hill said making the decision to be obvious about his political views was not difficult given his identity as a black man. But he “really stuck [his] neck out” when it came to the finances of his business, which had been open for less than 18 months when he decided to start specials with a political theme. His business is new enough that he can’t compare sales over long periods, but he said he believes being open about his politics has brought in customers. Hill said one woman came in and was upset about his sign. “After reading us the riot act … she still ate the food.” “This is the best time to tell other brown people that can’t stand up for themselves … [that] I can speak … I will not stop,” Hill said. SHIRA STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

LEXINGTON, VA. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was booted from a Virginia restaurant Friday because she works for President Trump, becoming the latest administration official to experience a brusque reception in such a setting. Sanders tweeted that she was told by the co-owner of the Red Hen in Lexington, Va., that she had to “leave because I work for @POTUS and I politely left.” The tweet from her official account Saturday generated 22,000 replies in about an hour, kicking off a furious debate with people on both sides weighing in. The restaurant’s co-owner Stephanie Wilkinson told The Washington Post she had several reasons for the decision, including the concerns of several employees who were gay and knew Sanders had defended Trump’s desire to bar transgender people from the military. The separation of families trying to enter the U.S. at the southern border has intensified political differences and passions. Last week, Trump’s Homeland Security secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, cut short a dinner at a Mexican restaurant in D.C. after protesters shouted, “Shame!” until she left. A few days earlier, Trump aide Stephen Miller, a key adviser on immigration, was accosted by someone at a different Mexican restaurant in the city, who called him “a fascist,” according to the New York Post. Council votes to rename Jefferson Davis Highway

A D.C. restaurant and bar is under fire after a transgender woman says she was asked to show ID when she went to use the women’s restroom. Charlotte Clymer, who works as an activist, said she was celebrating a friend’s upcoming wedding at Cuba Libre on Friday when she was followed into the women’s bathroom by a male attendant after refusing to show him her ID. Clymer said she was ultimately kicked out when she refused to show her ID to a manager. Clymer’s tweets about the incident drew a response from Cuba Libre’s executives, who apologized for the incident and said its staff would be immediately retrained. (EXPRESS/TWP)

The Alexandria City Council unanimously and finally decided Saturday to rename Jefferson Davis Highway to Richmond Highway, after three years of discussion. The name change will take place Jan. 1. The name of the road, also known as U.S. Route 1, has long irritated many in the liberal town, but it took the Charleston church shooting in 2015 for the council to start the process. It will cost the city $27,000 to change the signs, and the portion of the road that splits into Patrick and Henry streets will not be renamed. A community task force unanimously recommended the name Richmond Highway. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Mark Sanford in a GOP primary earlier this month, was seriously injured in a vehicle crash on Friday, a spokesman said. Arrington and a friend were traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 17 when a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction hit their vehicle, according to police. her husband to get around, “I felt heavy, tied back,” she said. As cars raced by on King Abdulaziz Road, her daughter, Ahd Niazy, 23, said from the back seat: “You’re doing great, mama.” Hany Niazy, Alagili’s husband, called the couple’s other daughter, Layal, 19, who lives in Washington, D.C. “Mama, how do you feel?” Layal asked. “I feel great,” her mother said. “I feel wonderful. I am born today.” The government’s heavily promoted celebration of the ban’s lifting included gathering female drivers near a mall in Jiddah at around midnight on Sunday. Some arrived in cars driven by their husbands, and then took the wheel themselves. They set off in a small convoy, as journalists crowded around, to explore the city’s roads. The scene recalled a protest, nearly 30 years ago in Riyadh, the Saudi capital, when dozens of Saudi women gathered at a supermarket and drove around the city before they were stopped and detained. The protest was a milestone for Saudi feminists and for what would become a decades-long campaign to end the driving ban. The Saudi government has tried to suppress that history. In May, just weeks before the lifting of the ban, it arrested some of the country’s most prominent women’s rights advocates, including women who participated in the 1990 protest. SAUDI ARABIA With her husband in the passenger seat and her daughter cheering her on, Dania Alagili guided her sport utility vehicle onto King Abdulaziz Road in Jiddah early Sunday, breaking a social barrier with the simple act of braving the roaring Saudi traffic. “This is a day I’ve been waiting for,” she said. “For the last 30 years.” Saudi Arabia allowed women to drive for the first time on Sunday, lifting a ban that was the last of its kind in the world and one that had come to symbolize the kingdom’s harsh subjugation of women. It was one of the battery of changes ushered in by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman that have loosened some social restrictions in Saudi Arabia, including the kingdom’s strictly enforced gender segregation. Saudi women have continued to agitate for more far-reaching change, including the elimination of a system of guardianship requiring women to have the permission of a male relative to travel and work. But as women drove for the first time Sunday, many hailed it as an important step toward greater freedom and control over their lives. That Alagili, 47, had earned her driving license 23 years ago, in the U.S., did nothing to dampen the joy of finally driving in her own city, on her own roads, on her own. opportunity — buying a car and making an appointment for a driver’s test the day the ban was lifted. She had not minded having a driver, but hated making him wait around while she visited friends or relatives for hours. “I like to depend on myself. To choose my own roads, my own way,” she said. As she drove around her neighborhood Sunday, shortly after picking up her license, she said it was possible the novelty would wear off, that she would tire of the Jiddah traffic. But not yet. “I never believed this would happen,” she said. “The feeling is amazing.” KAREEM FAHIM (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The Supreme Court on Friday put new restraints on law enforcement’s access to confidential information about Americans, ruling 5-4 that authorities must obtain a warrant to gain access to cell tower records that can provide a virtual timeline and map of a person’s whereabouts. Rural wildfires destroy buildings, force evacuations

Egypt has extended its state of emergency for another three months. President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s decision was published in the official gazette Sunday. It is expected to be approved by parliament within seven days and go into effect July 14. Egypt has been in a state of emergency since April 2017, after an Islamic State affiliate bombed two Coptic churches, killing at least 44. Egypt has been battling ISIS militants — who mainly target Christians and security forces — for years. In February, Egypt launched an operation against militants in Sinai, the Nile Delta and the Western Desert. (AP)

Minnesota state authorities are investigating after Minneapolis police shot and killed a black man they say was firing a handgun as he walked outside. People gathered Sunday afternoon to protest at a police station, and a vigil near the shooting scene was set for the evening, the Star Tribune reported. Some witnesses have disputed the police account of the Saturday shooting, saying the man did not have a gun. Authorities say two calls to 911 reported that a man was firing a handgun into the air and ground. Officers arrived and pursued the suspect on foot. The chase “ended in shots being fired,” police said. (AP)

Wind-driven wildfires destroyed buildings and threatened hundreds of others Sunday as they raced across dry brush in rural Northern California. The Pawnee Fire, which broke out Saturday near the small community of Clearlake Oaks, destroyed 12 buildings and threatened an additional 600 as it burned out of control across about 2.5 square miles. Authorities ordered people to evacuate all homes in the Spring Valley area, where about 3,000 people live. No injuries were reported. Erratic wind and heat gripping a swath of California from San Jose to the Oregon border drove the flames. (AP)

HEALTH Colored bulbs cast an eerie blue glow in the restroom of a convenience store in WilkesBarre, Pa., where people who inject heroin and other drugs have been seeking the relative privacy of the stalls to shoot up. The blue lights are meant to discourage people from using drugs in store bathrooms by making it more difficult for them to see their veins. It’s an idea that’s been around for years but is getting a fresh look as a result of the nation’s opioid epidemic. Turkey Hill Minit Markets is one of two convenience store chains and a supermarket chain working with Loss Prevention Research Council, a retail industrysupported group, to field-test the blue bulbs. Director Read Hayes said the study is still in its infancy, but initial feedback has been positive. Earlier studies have questioned the lights’ deterrent effect, with people who use opioids telling researchers they’d shoot up in blue light if it meant avoiding withdrawal symptoms. Many public health experts oppose the practice, saying blue lights make people more likely to hurt themselves and stigmatize those in the grip of addiction. But store owners say they have to do something. At some Turkey Hill locations, store workers have found used needles or even people slumped over from overdoses, said Matt Dorgan, the chain’s asset protection manager. MICHAEL RUBINKAM (AP)

Border laws ‘a mockery’ Trump says people who cross into U.S. illegally must be immediately deported without trial

Trump officials vow to reunite split-up families

HERIKA MARTINEZ (AFP/GETTY IMAGES)

IMMIGRATION President Trump on Sunday explicitly advocated depriving undocumented immigrants of their due-process rights, arguing that people who cross the border into the United States illegally were invaders and must immediately be deported without trial or an appearance before a judge. Trump’s attack on the judicial system sowed more confusion as lawmakers struggle to reach consensus on immigration legislation and as federal agencies scramble to reunite thousands of migrant children and their parents who had been separated under an administration policy abruptly reversed last week. The House is preparing to vote this week on a broad GOP immigration bill, but although the White House supports the legislation, its prospects for passage appeared dim Sunday, both because Democrats oppose the measure and because Republicans are divided over how restrictive immigration laws should be. Meanwhile, some GOP lawmakers were preparing a more narrow bill that would solely address one of the flaws in Trump’s executive order, which mandates that migrant children and parents not be separated during their detention. The 1997 “Flores settlement” requires that children be released after 20 days, but the GOP proposal would allow for children and their parents to stay together in detention facilities past 20 days. At the center of the negotiations is a president who has kept up his hard-line rhetoric even as he gives contradictory directives

to Republican allies. In a pair of tweets sent late Sunday morning, Trump described immigrants as invaders, called U.S. immigration laws “a mockery” and wrote that they must be changed to take away legal rights from undocumented migrants. “We cannot allow all of these people to invade our Country,” Trump wrote. “When somebody comes in, we must immediately, with no Judges or Court Cases, bring them back from where they came. Our system is a mockery to good immigration policy and Law and Order. Most children come without parents.” The president continued, “Our Immigration policy, laughed at all over the world, is very unfair to all of those people who have gone through the system legally and are waiting on line for years! ... we need people who will help to Make America Great Again!” House Republicans are preparing to vote on a broad bill

Beef up court system? Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, put forth legislation on the border crisis that proposed doubling the amount of immigration judges from roughly 375 to 750. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has taken steps to strengthen immigration courts so they can process many cases without trials. Sessions said this year that he had “sent 35 prosecutors to the Southwest and moved 18 judges to the border” to increase how many judges handle asylum claims. (TWP)

this week that would provide $25 billion for Trump’s longsought border wall, limit legal immigration and give young undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship. But because that bill may not garner enough votes to pass the House, momentum was building over the weekend for a more narrow measure that would end the Flores settlement.

Vatican convicts ex-diplomat of child porn distribution, sentences him to 5 years in prison

Marc Short, the White House director of legislative affairs, said Sunday that it was premature to announce which measures Trump would sign but urged Congress to act quickly. Meanwhile, Trump’s attack on the due-process rights of immigrants follows a week in which he has been fixated on the immigration court system, which he has called “ridiculous.” Democrats and immigrant rights advocates sought to shame Trump for saying he wants to deny illegal immigrants their due-process rights. Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, said in a statement: “What President Trump has suggested here is both illegal and unconstitutional. Any official who has sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution and laws should disavow it unequivocally.” PHILIP RUCKER AND DAVID WEIGEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

IMMIGRATION Trump administration officials said the U.S. government knows the location of all children in its custody after separating them from their families at the border and is working to reunite them. A fact sheet on “zerotolerance prosecution and family reunification” released Saturday night by the Department of Homeland Security and other agencies involved also said a parent may request that their child be deported with them. In the past, the agency said, many parents elected to be deported without their children. That may be a reflection of violence or persecution they face in their home countries. The fact sheet didn’t state how long it might take to reunite families. Last week, President Trump ordered to stop separating migrant children from their parents. As of last Wednesday, 2,053 minors who were separated at the border were being cared for in HHS-funded facilities, the fact sheet said. As part of the effort, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have posted notices in all facilities advising detained parents who are trying to find or communicate with their children to call a hotline. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol said it had reunited 522 children and that some were never taken into custody by HHS because their parents’ criminal cases were processed too quickly. ALL-STAR GAME

Caps take care of business

Bryce’s plan for HR Derby has a big ‘if’

The Capitals won their first Stanley Cup Final just three weeks ago, but with all the changes since then, it might feel like three months. Just this weekend, they prepared to interview assistant coach Todd Reirden to replace their suddenly departed head coach,

and traded two familiar names, in part to create salary-cap space to sign one of their stars. ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

It’s Reirden’s job to lose

Trade provides cap space

Carlson gets $64M deal

More investment in draft

GM Brian MacLellan plans to interview the Caps’ top assistant coach, Todd Reirden, this week for the head-coaching vacancy, acknowledging that the job is Reirden’s to lose. He spent four years on the staff of Barry Trotz, who resigned last week in a dispute over pay and was named coach of the Islanders. MacLellan may not even interview other candidates if the discussions with Reirden go well. MacLellan has said Reirden, 46, could have “a good feel for personalities” in the locker room, and the familiarity could create a seamless transition that the organization likely wants after winning its first championship.

The Caps traded No. 2 goaltender Philipp Grubauer and defenseman Brooks Orpik, 37, to the Avalanche for a second-round pick (No. 47 overall) at the NHL draft on Friday, a move that cleared Orpik’s $5.5 million salary-cap hit for next season and gives Grubauer a better chance to compete to start. The move gave the Capitals more than $21 million in cap room to re-sign top defenseman John Carlson and key pending free agents. Orpik was one of the most respected players in the Caps’ dressing room but had been reduced to a third-pairing role. The Avalanche moved this weekend to buy out his contract.

Until Sunday evening, the Capitals’ top defenseman, John Carlson, was just a week away from becoming an unrestricted free agent. Then, just after 7 p.m., the club said it had reached an agreement with him on an eightyear deal worth $64 million. The trade this weekend of defenseman Brooks Orpik provided the necessary room under the salary cap. Carlson, 28, had said he wanted to return, but didn’t want to give the Capitals a hometown discount, either. The cap hit of $8 million puts him second on the payroll behind captain Alex Ovechkin. Carlson had a career season with 15 goals and 53 assists.

The Capitals haven’t been shy about trading away draft choices during their runs at a championship, but this weekend they had a healthy complement of seven picks, including four in the top 100. The organization added to its Russian flavor by selecting 6-foot-3 defenseman Alex Alexeyev with the last pick of the first round Friday. It next took another defenseman, Slovakian left-shot Martin Fehervary, and then added right wing Kody Clark, son of Toronto Maple Leafs great Wendel Clark. The Caps also drafted right wing Riley Sutter, who is part of a famed NHL family that includes his dad, Ron Sutter.

Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper says he will participate in the Home Run Derby on July 16 at his home park as long as he makes the National League all-star team. “So count me in for the Derby if and only if I make the team,” he said in a text Friday to The Washington Post. MLB is desperate for Harper’s star power in the Derby, since sluggers such as Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge have opted out. Harper had been noncommittal and last competed in the derby in 2013. He is second among NL outfielders in the current voting but was hitting only .212 — albeit with 19 homers — entering Sunday night’s game against the Phillies. If he isn’t voted in as a starter, he could be named a reserve. (TWP)

U.S. OPEN SEEDINGS

Pregnancy won’t be penalized

The U.S. Open no longer will penalize players for pregnancy-related absences when it awards seeds, The New York Times reported. The decision follows criticism of the French Open in May for not seeding its three-time champ, Serena Williams, left, in her return after giving birth. Seeds often are based on world rankings, which can tumble during an absence. Wimbledon already uses its discretion to award seeds based on past performance on grass. Wizards won’t rush n o i t their newest wing c A e h t tch

Ca

NBA DRAFT While the Wizards have glaring needs for shooting, rebounding, perimeter defense and improved athleticism at power forward and center, they used the 15th overall pick to draft a wing player who might need years to develop. The Wizards chose Oregon’s Troy Brown Jr. — who won’t turn 19 until July 28 — with the future in mind. After proclaiming Brown as a “guy that we’ve been targeting,” team officials would not declare him ready for the rotation. “That’s going to be up to him,” Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld told reporters on draft night Thursday. “We have a veteran team here and we have 10 guys coming back under contract … but the opportunity is always there, and if he earns it, he’ll play. “Hopefully, as the season progresses, he’ll get better and better and he’ll get some minutes.” Brown, who is from Las Vegas, averaged 11.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists during his lone season with the Ducks. Some draft analysts had pegged him as a good defender with a high basketball IQ whose offense needs work. He shot 44.1 percent from the field last

season and 29.1 percent on 3s. Since 2006, every player selected 15th overall has appeared in more than half of the 82-game regular season or played in the starting lineup as a rookie. But Grunfeld and coach Scott Brooks clearly don’t want to burden Brown (6-foot-7 and 215 pounds) with high expectations. The Wizards’ foundation is rooted in maximum-salary guards John Wall and Bradley Beal, along with small forward Otto Porter Jr. While Wall will turn 28 before the start of his ninth NBA season, the team’s core remains a young, veteran group. Stealing minutes from any of them won’t happen unless a surprising development

dictates a change. Washington has more wing depth on its bench in Kelly Oubre Jr. and Tomas Satoransky. So while Brown has a variety of burgeoning skills, he may see more time with the player development coaches on the practice court this season than he will against opponents. His next step will be the Summer League in Las Vegas. Washington took another 18-year-old, Ukrainian Issuf Sanon, with the 44th pick. Grunfeld said Sanon, a point guard, also will play in the Summer League, but then return to play overseas for at least a year. CANDACE BUCKNER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Ex-Maryland guard Kevin Huerter, left, is suddenly part of a high-profile project in Atlanta. The Hawks took the 6-foot-7 sharpshooter 19th overall last week and will pair him with a small point guard, Trae Young, the fifth pick. world cup 2018 Harry Kane became the third Englishman to get three goals in a World Cup match.

verbatim

ANTONIO CALANNI (AP)

“This was a thriller, a roller-coaster ride right up until the final whistle. … Knockout games are often decided in these moments.” JOACHIM LOW, Germany’s coach, on Toni Kroos’ score on a free kick in the fifth minute of stoppage time to beat Sweden 2-1 on Saturday and keep Germany from being eliminated

Kane scores three times as team advances and shows off new attitude Not since a 4-2 victory over Germany in the 1966 final has England scored as many goals at the World Cup. Now England is assured of a spot in the round of 16 with a game to spare in Group G. Panama was eliminated along with Tunisia. The ruthlessness of the display in the sweltering heat of Nizhny Novgorod showed just how far England has been transformed in the four years since an older, more experienced squad couldn’t even manage a win when it exited the World Cup in the group stage.

In 2014, England complained about the heat in Brazil — particularly the humidity of the Amazonian jungle in the team’s opening loss to Italy. In Russia, England has been trying to cast aside the negativity of the past while remolding the image of the team. Even locals were supporting the team in Nizhny Novgorod, despite the bitter diplomatic relations between Russia and Britain. Sterner tests await, starting with Thursday’s game against Belgium. The teams will play for first place in the group. (AP)

The undefeated teams play in Samara for the top spot in Group A, with both assured a spot in the knockout round. This already is Russia’s best advance in the Cup in the post-Soviet era. (AP)

Portugal vs. Iran For Iran, advancing past the group stage for the first time will likely require a win over Portugal in Saransk; a draw does the trick only if Spain loses by multiple goals to Morocco. (AP)

JAPAN 2, SENEGAL 2

Honda comes off bench to forge a tie for Japan

Radamel Falcao’s first World Cup goal led Colombia to a 3-0 victory over Poland on Sunday in Kazan and kept the Group H team in the running for a spot in the knockout round. Poland was eliminated. Falcao, who missed the 2014 World Cup because of a knee injury, made it 2-0 with a 70th-minute goal. Yerry Mina scored in the 40th and Juan Cuadrado completed the win in the 75th. Colombia next faces Senegal at 10 a.m. Thursday. (AP)

Senegal twice took the lead Sunday in Yekaterinburg, but Japan tied the score both times. Forward Keisuke Honda came off the bench in the second half and scored in the 78th minute, giving the Japanese the 2-2 draw. Honda, 32, became the first Japanese player to score in at least three World Cups. The draw kept the teams at the top of Group H ahead of their final matches. On Thursday, Senegal will face Colombia and Japan will play Poland. (AP)

Neither team can advance, so the major storyline in Volgograd will center on Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, who CNN said is considering quitting the national team because he has been drawn into politics. The team has been based in Chechnya during the Cup, and during training Salah was photographed with extremist Chechnyan leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who later declared Salah an honorary citizen of the Chechen Republic. Hat trick lifts England ENGLAND 6, PANAMA 1 Harry Kane now has a real souvenir from the World Cup. The England striker grabbed the game ball and kept it in his grasp after scoring a hat trick in a 6-1 win Sunday over Panama. The goals — two penalties and a lucky deflection — made him the third Englishman after Geoff Hurst and Gary Lineker to score a hat trick in a World Cup match. “One to be proud of,” said Kane, who has a tournamentleading five goals at the World Cup, one more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku.

Today’s games

A win by Spain in Kaliningrad would guarantee that the 2010 World Cup champion advances to the knockout stage. A draw would be enough if Portugal beats Iran in the other Group B match. Morocco is winless and cannot advance. (AP)

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

The kings of summer

1 ‘Believer’ 8 p.m. today on HBO

This documentary follows Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds as he organizes the LoveLoud Festival to benefit gay rights organizations and explores how the Mormon church treats its LGBT members.

What to read, where to go, what to watch — summer can be rather bossy, culture-wise, but it’s still mostly a no-pressure proposition where TV is concerned. The networks seem to regard this summer as a time to worry less and experiment more, so, in the spirit of lowstakes diversion, here are four new series and specials worth looking at between now and Labor Day. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

2 ‘A Very English Scandal’

9 p.m. July 8 on HBO

Easily the summer’s most anticipated drama series, this eight-episode thriller (from “Unreal” co-creator Marti Noxon and “Big Little Lies” director JeanMarc Vallee) adapts Gillian Flynn’s novel about Camille Preaker (Amy Adams), a burned-out reporter from St. Louis who is assigned to go back to her hometown of Wind Gap, Mo., and write about the murder of one girl and the disappearance of another. The cast includes Patricia Clarkson as Camille’s mother and Chris Messina as the town’s new police detective. Vallee employs his trademark style to edit between past and present in a show that turns out to be insanely addictive.

HBO

‘Sharp Objects’

‘Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind’ 8 p.m. July 16 on HBO

Marina Zenovich’s documentary about the legendary comedian and actor, who died by suicide in 2014, is everything a fan could want — an immersive dive into Robin Williams’ life story that is rich with old pictures, clips and recordings of his earliest work. As he finds success (and cocaine), the film zips along at an equally frantic-manic pace. But viewers also get a deeper glimpse of Williams’ quiet side. There’s a core insecurity, seeking a comfort that comes from audience approval (“hugs from strangers,” Billy Crystal calls it). Less is said about Williams’ final years and the circumstances of his death, but there is a sense of a life lived fully and wildly.

‘Castle Rock’

‘Disenchantment’

July 25 on Hulu

Aug. 17 on Netflix

Once more to the unhappier parts of rural, woodsy Maine — the fictional town of Castle Rock, to be exact — where J.J. Abrams and Stephen King have come up with a series that makes use of settings and situations from King’s considerable collection of stories. The story gets rolling at the present-day Shawshank State Penitentiary, where a guard (Noel Fisher) discovers a feral young man (Bill Skarsgard) living in a cage beneath the prison. More mysterious than terrifying, the show has a strong ensemble — Sissy Spacek, Terry O’Quinn, Melanie Lynskey, Scott Glenn — and looks like a suitable stand-in for ghost stories around the campfire.

A new Matt Groening series doesn’t come along often, and perhaps “Disenchantment” will do for medieval lore what “The Simpsons” did for suburbia and “Futurama” did for notions of Tomorrowland. Groening’s sensibility and dark humor are both quite intact, maybe more so without the constraints of broadcast TV. “Broad City’s” Abbi Jacobson voices the main character, Princess Bean of Dreamland, whose resistance to an arranged marriage leads her to pal up with an itinerant elf (Nat Faxon) and acquire a personal demon (Eric Andre). In concept it may sound a tad “Shrek”-like, but the genre is still plenty fertile.

Stephen Frears’ three-part miniseries dramatizes the 1970s scandal in which U.K. politician Jeremy Thorpe (Hugh Grant) was accused of conspiring to kill his former lover (Ben Whishaw).

3 ‘Glow’ Friday on Netflix

Alison Brie returns for Season 2 of the 1980s-set comedy series as the fledgling Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling flirt with fame while trying to fend off cancelation. (EXPRESS)

BOX OFFICE HAUL

Small business is CBS ALL ACCESS

“Strange Angel” revolves around a group of vest enthusiasts.

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

An ‘Angel’s’ demons: CBS examines the dark side of a genius “Strange Angel,” the new CBS All Access series, is a show that lives up to its provocative title. It’s based on the life of Jack Parsons, who aimed for the heavens by building rockets — and becoming deeply involved with a “sex magick” cult. The show is set in 1930s Los Angeles, when a young Parsons was recently (and unhappily) married and working as a janitor at a chemical company, sweeping up residue to use in his rocketry experiments with a strait-laced friend. That’s where Parsons puts his salary, too, so he and his wife are

behind on their mortgage. Portrayed by Irish-American actor Jack Reynor, Parsons is a brawny fellow with a slender moustache, the bluest of eyes and a desperate longing to succeed in the field of rocketry — a field that, a professor warns him, “does not even exist.” The fact that Parsons has no college degree does not deter him. Then again, his hold on reality seems a bit tenuous. He slips into comic book-inspired fantasies of slaying a giant feline with a bow-and-arrow. But really, nothing he imagines is as fantastical as the religious ritual he witnesses — the planned sacrifice of an alleged virgin — in a gathering of the Thelemite cult. He ends

up joining. If cultish religions aren’t your thing, there are the rocketry sequences to enjoy. Matches are lit, fuses burn, rockets sometimes flop and sometimes succeed. (Spoiler alert: Parsons is acknowledged as a major contributor to modern rocketry.) Dropping new episodes each Thursday, the show sets a deliberate pace. Parsons gazes upon the lights of L.A. twinkling at night, like a faraway dreamland. He and mysterious new neighbor Ernest (played with a devilish twinkle by “Homeland” alumnus Rupert Friend) scale the fence of a mansion and go for a homoerotically tinged nighttime swim in a pool with lapping turquoise water. It’s strangely alluring. So just like Parsons, CBS is making a go of it in a genre that does not exist. This space rocket/occult sex saga is truly the final frontier!

“TIME’s screw-up ... is a real story. The excusemaking and self-justifying from TIME’s editor is pathetic, fueling media distrust.” @GGREENWALD, tweeting about the news that the child featured crying on the cover of Time was not separated from her parents at the U.S./Mexico border. Time issued a correction, but stood by the cover. “Our cover and our reporting capture the stakes of this moment,” Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal said in a statement to CNN.

“Reminder that Twitter lets users report racist content. I already have ... but feel free to report Mike Huckabee.” @PEANUT96, tweeting after Mike Huckabee tweeted a photo of apparent gang members on Saturday, calling them Nancy Pelosi’s campaign committee. Huckabee is a former governor of Arkansas and the father of White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. When Washington Post columnist Karen Tumulty tweeted at him: “Your tweet had a racial meaning. Please understand that,“ Huckabee replied: “Absurd! To see race in everything IS racist.”

“Delta, really? Shame! Pitbull isn’t a breed. The problem isn’t the dogs. It’s people using the term ‘service animal’ for dogs that aren’t.“ @DAISYFUENTES, reacting to Delta Air

Lines’ new policy that prohibits all “pit bull-type dogs” as service or support animals. Advocates for pit bulls and service animal organizations spoke out against the policy. “[This is] based on misinformation and irrational fear,” @annimal_18 tweeted.

“Stress does not cause racism, just like Ambien does not cause racism.” @DANIBOSTICK, tweeting about a video

on social media of a white woman in San Francisco who allegedly called the police on an 8-year-old black girl who was selling water on the sidewalk. The video went viral as the woman in the video, Alison Ettel, was dubbed #PermitPatty and lambasted online. Ettel spoke with Huff Post, and said the incident wasn’t about race but was “stress-related.” She added that the way she handled it was “a complete mistake.”
